Mit veszünk észre a múltból? Mindig minden ugyanúgy látszik? Mindig mindent ugyanúgy olvasunk? Hol futnak össze az elágazó ösvények, és ki vagy mi dönti el, hogy mikor merre indulunk? A Nemzeti Múzeum állandó kiállításain – egymás után – három téma kapcsán kínál alternatív útvonalat. 2018-ban betűk, kötődések és terek hívják a látogatót, hogy évezredeken átsétálva gondolja újra, hányféleképp juthatunk el A-tól Z-ig. What is it that we notice from the past? Does everything always appear the same? Do we read everything always in the same way? Where do the divergent paths meet? Who or what decides in which direction we set off?

The Hungarian National Museum offers three alternative – and consecutive – routes through its permanent exhibitions, related to three different topics. In 2018, letters, connections and spaces invite visitors to walk through the millennia and rethink in how many different ways we may get from A to Z.

Mi a láthatóvá tett kulturális emlékezet, az írás szerepe a Kárpát-medencében az őskortól napjainkig? Hányféle írásbeliség nyomait őrizzük a Múzeumban? Az útvonalat végigjárva az első karcolt csonteszközöktől – kereskedelmi és kulturális kölcsönhatások lenyomatain, pénzeken, ékszereken, képző- és iparművészeti alkotásokon át –, 20. századi „hibrid” tárgyakig juthatunk. Az útvonallal összekötött tárgyak sokfélék; anyaguk, kiterjedésük, használatuk és történetük eltérő, de ismert vagy ismeretlen alkotójuk vágya az emlékezésre, a rögzítésre és továbbadásra mindegyik hordozón ott maradt. A kultúra szövedéke, amely valaha körbe fonta őket, az idők során fölfeslett, mi pedig a foszlányokból próbáljuk kibogozni az üzenetet. Most a betűkkel kezdjük az újraolvasást.

What has been the role of writing, of visible cultural memory in the Carpathian Basin since prehistoric times to the present day? How many different literacies have their traces preserved in the Museum? Following the route, we may get from the first engraved bone tools to the tokens of commercial and cultural interactions – coins, jewels, creations of fine and applied arts – to 20th-century “hybrid” objects. The objects connected by the route are varied; their material, size, use and history may differ, but the desire of their known or unknown creators for remembrance, recording and transmission is still present in every medium. The fabric of culture once surrounding them has unravelled in the course of history, and we attempt to decipher the message from its mere shreds. The rereading will start with letters.
