1918 world war I ends with a allied victory pushing germany and most of europe into a economic slump. max’s home country of switzerland erupts in unrest.

constructivism is introduced in russia as one of the first uses of geometric abstract shapes in advertising.

1915 suprematism is introduced by kazimir malevich. His movement is the main focus of bill’s latter geometric concrete art.

1933 the nazi party takes over germany’s political system, forcing bill out of germany because of his left political activities.

1932 bill aids with the design of the left leaning magazine information which criticizes the rising nazi party.

1931 using money from his commercial design work for companies such as Wohnbedarf, bill completes his own house and studio. Although advertising at the time himself as an architect this is the only architectural work he is able to complete up until this point.

1945 The magazine abstrakt-konkrete is formed around the ideas of concretism. The magazine will go on to popularize it making one of the definitive movements of the 1950’s.

1945 1946 Bill publishes uber typograhie, laying the groundwork for swiss typography off of jan tschiold’s mathematic and geometric use of type. A rift is caused when tschiold separates from his neue typography while bill stays firmly attached.

world war II ends with most of europe destroyed from the widespread fighting. bill is recruited to help rebuild germany culturally and architecturally.

1946 The Cold War begins causing bitter tensions to begin between the East and West. Bill is regarded as too left in his political ideology.

1947 the basel school is created by emil ruder and armin hofman, leaders in the new typography and swiss style. this school along with the bauhaus will be the inspiration of bill’s ulm school of design.
