Social Cause: The Fracking Truth Fracking, otherwise known as Hydraulic Fracturing, is the practice of breaking up rocks by pumping sand, chemicals and water deep underground to create a greater flow of natural gas, oil, and brine to the surface. This process has been known to cause contamination of ground water, increases in seismic activity, and widespread surface pollution due the uncontrollable nature of many the chemicals so far underground. Due to legislation passed in 2005 the chemicals used by major energy companies are not federally regulated to protect the workers and the surrounding communities from the harmful chemicals that can come from accidents or negligence. Regulation and accountability of large oil companies for fracking can only be taken through federal legislature due to the country wide problem with fracking. Our cause is dedicated to promoting awareness and political action to the transition to safe and responsible energy production in the United States of America.

FORMALDEHYDE

HYDROCHORIC

The Fracking Truth is committed to exposing the public to the negative impacts that hydraulic fracking can have on community’s water, air, and soil. From there we look to push voters to contain and police these impacts through federal regulation of fracking chemicals and practices to create a greater environmental responsibility and accountability for gas and oil companies.

FORMALDEHYDE Branding

MERCURY

FOR

HYDROCHORIC ACID

Our logo and branding are based off the idea of revealing what has been hidden by the hydraulic fracking industry. This idea inspired our simple and bold name and logo that reflects our key principles. We are committed to bringing our audiences the “blacked out” truths that are denied to truth and because of that we provide that idea in a simple and recognizable mark. The other main motif that we include in our brand is the use of black bars symbolizing the hidden practices of the fracking industry supplemented by the dangerous chemicals that known to be used by them.

FORMALDEHYDE Engagement

MERCURY

FORMALDEHYDE

To begin our campaign we introduce our audiences to the basic concepts of Hydraulic Fracturing such as the negative consequences and the lack of responsibility that oil companies operate with.

HYDROCHORIC ACID

HYDROCHORIC

Using simple illustrations we look to begin to change how people look at the effect of fracking on their lives by pointing out the individual chemicals and their effects on people and the environment and the lack of regulation around them. This approach is focused in four distinct mediums that fracking can effect, food, air, water and drinking fluids and helps to solidly ground the ominous “negatives of fracking” that are so often talked about.

FORMALDEHYDE Engagement

The other half of the engagement and educating our audience is an animated video that goes deeper in the background fracking. In this video our audience can visualize the actual fracking process and how that process can lead to toxic chemical exposer. Using national statistics we show the larger impact that has fracking has had on America in general and future consequences without intervention. This larger scale leads into a call to action that pushes our audience to create change by voting for the regulation of fracking.

Report to Congress

The second half of our campaign is based about taking legislation to the streets through the use of stickers styled after congressional reports. These stickers are action points because they point out the extensive scale in which fracking has been dismissed by the United States government. They include strong call to actions that are reinforced by the legal typesetting of the sticker itself.

The second section of this series is a list of the four hundred chemicals subject to the major regulatory acts that create responsibility and safety standards in the U.S. oil industry. The majority of these pages have a large “Fracking Exempting” written across them creating a repeated and strong message of the relationship fracking enjoys with the U.S. government. The first page and last page both contain more in-depth explanations and call to actions allowing the twenty page list to be read from right to left or left to right.
