Welcome A utumn’s has arrived. Crisp mornings, clear air, stunning colours… it’s a fantastic time to be out having fun on your bike. Here’s our advice: keep on riding. Lots. Think about it… if you’re a commuter, the cooler temperature means you arrive at work feeling a whole lot fresher and ready for the day ahead. If you’re a mountain biker, you get the chance to strap some lights to your handlebars and enjoy the magic of weaving through tight singletrack in the dark, and go wild on the muddy trails. Finally, if you’re a roadie, the tarmac suddenly gets a lot less crowded. This is the time when summer cyclists hang up the bike at the back of the garage for a few months, freeing things up for the year-round enthusiasts – people like you!

Garmin Edge 800 GPS Garmin have recently announced the launch of the Edge 800 GPS, the successor to the popular Edge 705. Seasons Autumn… Is there a better time of year to ride your bike?

ersatility: that’s what you need from your bike clothing now that cooler weather is here. You need kit that’ll keep you warm on breezy mornings without overheating you if the sun comes out later on. Think about how you can team up different combos according to the temperature. Arm and leg warmers, lighter weight long-sleeve jerseys, three-quarter length shorts… look for clothes that’ll keep you riding comfortably in a wide range of autumn conditions so you can get the maximum out of them. Remember, what works for you at this time of year will do an equally good job next spring when the weather
starts to warm up again, and you’ll be prepared for cool summer evenings too. You can never be sure when Britain’s winter is going to kick in but the one thing you do know is that it’ll arrive sooner or later, so you need to be ready from late October onwards. Choose carefully and you can use some of your autumn kit right into winter too by adding an extra layer or two. Just make sure you don’t get caught without the jacket, longs and thick gloves you’ll need to stay warm in the really cold weather – these are the winter essentials you can’t afford to be without.

weight fabrics than summer jerseys for extra warmth. A few even have windproof panels on the front of the body and sleeves to keep the cold air out without sacrificing too much breathability. Look out for long zips for ventilation on the climbs, rear pockets for carrying all your gubbins, and reflective details for safety. Teaming the jersey up with a longsleeved base layer is a good move– it will wick sweat away to keep you dry while adding a little insulation at the same time. As temperatures drop you might even want to step up to a lightweight jacket on crisper mornings. A simple windproof does wonders – you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes to your body temperature – and most pack down small enough to fit into a jersey pocket. Neither wind, nor rain, nor cold can stop you… if You’ve got the right kit

here’s no reason to stop riding when winter arrives. Yes, it’s colder out there but cycling’s every bit as exhilarating, practical and good for you in the chilly weather, just as long as you have the right gear. Staying warm is a matter of getting your layers right. Start with a good, long-sleeved base layer next to your skin. You need a technical fabric that’ll wick sweat away quickly
to keep you dry and comfortable, and a heavier weight than you’d use in summer for extra warmth. Polyproplylene and polyester are good choices because they don’t retain much moisture, but there’s also the merino wool option. Merino is soft, comfy and warm – even if it gets damp. and it doesn’t hold on to smells the way man made fibres can. Next you’ll need a long sleeved jersey to provide more insulation

budget, but don’t forget to make sure you get a close fit to avoid flapping and decent ventilation so you don’t steam up on the hills. You need maximum protection for your bottom half too. Tights – or longs – come in a range of fabrics. Go for fleece-backed Roubaix for the most warmth, if you’re likely to be out in all weathers get some with windproof/waterproof panels too. If you’re not into the skin-tight look, there are plenty of cycle-specific trousers to choose from, including casual cuts that you can wear both on and off the bike. Don’t forget about your hands and feet – if they get cold, the rest of your body will follow. There are some amazing winter cycling gloves these days that really will keep your hands warm and dry no matter what, while winter cycling shoes offer extra defence against the elements. Failing that, go for overshoes – they’ll keep your feet warm and protect your shoes at the same time, and they’re not expensive. Finally you need to sort your head out, you can lose a whole lot of heat up there if you don’t keep it covered. Keep the cold out with a headband or underhelmet hat, a Buff is another good way to stay well covered.

off-road antics (and no mtbs in sight!)

yclocross racing has its origins in France at the turn of the 19th century, with road racers aiming to increase their fitness over the winter by riding on rough tracks and across fields. What started as a training activity soon became competitive, with early races being point-to-points across whatever terrain happened to lie between the start and finish. While the first ‘cross racers used the same bikes they were racing on the road (since this was before metalled roads were common, there wasn’t that much difference between on road and off it), as cyclocross evolved into a sport in its own right so did the bikes. Today, ‘cross bikes still resemble road bikes in profile, with 700C wheels and drop bars. But
the frames have slightly more laidback geometry, some extra strength, clearance for wider tyres (the widest tyre allowed in international competition is 33mm, but most bikes will take at least a 35) and cantilever brake bosses. Ironically the very specific demands of cyclocross has produced bikes that are amazingly versatile.

Most of the affordable ‘cross bikes come with a full complement of bottle mounts and often mudguard and rack eyes too and make excellent mixed-terrain bikes as well as lively commuters. These days too there is a whole class of commuter bikes that are essentially ‘cross bikes with slick tyres on… all they need is set of slightly knobblier tyres and they’re ready to jump off the tarmac. Today cyclocross has moved on from its point-to-point origins in the interests of spectator appeal, with races taking place over short off-road courses and lasting an hour. As you’d imagine, the pace is usually high, and what with the short, sharp hills, obstacles and the strong likelihood of thick mud, you’ll definitely know you’ve been in a race by the end.

Dismounting is essentially the traditional “swing the right leg back over the saddle” technique only faster. Well-drilled riders will stay clipped in with the left foot, swinging the right leg through between the left leg and the bike and unclipping as the right foot hits the ground running. You may wish to unclip before swinging off the bike, but watch out for slipping off the pedal. It’s worth getting off the bike to the left regardless of “handedness”, as if you’re going to shoulder the bike you want the chainset on the outside – it’s quite sharp.

My dedication to writing this review, perhaps understandably, hasn’t extended to deliberately throwing myself on my head to see whether it keeps me safe as it ought, but the rigid carbon reinforced structure of the helmet gives me a higher degree of confidence than a simple polystyrene shell product might, and the snug fitting, easily adjusted cradle prevents any unwanted movement on the head while riding. One of the typical drawbacks of putting anything on top of your head during exercise is the reduction in airflow leading to discomfort from overheating and perspiration. Specialized have clearly worked hard to try to overcome these issues as the S-Works is to helmets
what Swiss cheese is to, well, cheese. The numerous vents keep your head really well ventilated and are large enough to be able to address those long-ride itches. The internal padding is removable and washable , and two sets of pads are provided to allow the user to arrange the internal cushioning to suit them. Versatile windproof shell with a neat party trick... In our changeable climate, deciding what to wear when you leave the house can have far-reaching implications for the comfort and quality of your ride. With the aptly named Transformer jacket, Altura have come up with a technical cycling top that transforms from long to short sleeved and vice versa, at the pull of a zip. The transformer is a soft - shell short / long sleeved jacket with a full length zip, three rear pockets plus a zippered key / money pocket. Breathable and lightweight, it’s a versatile top that might just solve some of your wardrobe quandaries. In long-sleeved mode, it’s comfortable and breathable, with well - positioned reflective decals running down the front and side of the upper arms and elasticated cuffs. The removable sleeves, which are joined by a yoke across the
shoulders, overlap sufficiently with the fabric beneath that no wind or moisture creeps in around the shoulder joins. The neckline is also high to prevent any unwanted draughts sneaking in higher up. The shell stands up well to showers, but in persistent rain you will need something more waterproof, however it’s also quick to dry and doesn’t lose its wind resistance if you do get caught out in the rain. With the sleeves removed, which can be done without removing the top itself (although probably not while cycling!), the jacket retains its windproof core but exposes the short sleeves beneath, which are made from a lightweight wicking fabric but not windproof. It’s a good compromise for a day when the
long sleeves might be too warm but you still want some protection from the wind, meaning it can be worn against the skin. Despite being breathable, you might find the jacket a bit too warm in the Summer, and in the Winter you’re unlikely to want to remove the sleeves, but for the seasons in between, the Transformer jacket fits a gap in the market, and might well become one of your favourite bits of clothing.

s the days get shorter, it’s easy to feel that your riding time is being limited. However, with modern bike light systems, there’s no reason to head home as the sun drops. While high-end lights are incredibly bright compared to just a few years ago, they’re still not as bright as daylight, making night riding (especially off road) a very different experience. Familiar trails take on a whole new personality, while the sensation of speed is enhanced by not being able to see anything that’s not directly in front of you. You’ll find that your riding skills improve too – not being able to see in as much detail means you’ll start to rely more on the feel of the bike. You’ll need good lights, of course, but also bear in mind that it’ll be cold at night so add extra clothing layers. It’s a good idea to ride in a group, too, and make sure you have a backup light in case your main one fails.

uspension has transformed mountain biking, but it needs a little effort to get the most out of it. For a start, it needs to be properly set up. Most forks and rear shocks are air-sprung, so you can easily change the spring rate for your weight and riding style. The manufacturer’s recommendations are a good starting point, but don’t be afraid to experiment. If you never use anywhere near full travel you can probably afford to run it a little softer. It’s also important to get the damping (the gubbins which controls the speed of the shock’s movement), right. Most suspension systems have adjustable rebound damping – if the fork or shock feels too bouncy, add a click of damping. If it feels sluggish, take a click off. More sophisticated parts may also offer adjustable compression or platform damping, but get the basics of spring and rebound sorted before you start fiddling with those – it’s easy to confuse yourself; change one setting at a time. All suspension components benefit from regular cleaning and servicing, and up to a point this is easy to do yourself. Most fork
manufacturers suggest lifting the wiper seals at the top of the sliders every so often, cleaning underneath, lubing the foam rings that hide under the wipers and putting everything back. Changing lubrication oil in forks is also fairly straightforward – methods vary between forks, so check the instructions. A little more involved, but still easily within the realms of DIY, is popping the air sleeve off a rear shock, cleaning it out and regreasing the seals. More in-depth servicing of damper internals tends to involve specialist tools, obscure parts and a fair bit of expertise, so you may wish to let someone else do it. Evans Cycles’ purpose-built suspension workshop in Kendal is fully equipped to deal with Fox, RockShox, Marzocchi, Manitou, Pace and Cannondale suspension units. You can either take your fork and shock off your bike yourself and drop it off at any of our branches, or post it directly to the Kendal workshop. O
nce the pro race season has finished, you might be forgiven for thinking that anyone who has raced for 100 plus days and done 35,000 kilometers in the last year might be due some time off. In the life of a pro cyclist however, that isn’t the way the cookie crumbles. In Early December, the behind the scenes team at The BMC Racing Team begin to amass a whole load of equipment in order to be ready when the team arrives – en-masse – for its first training camp. In January of 2010 this was in the US of A and was where everyone in the team for the upcoming season met for the first time. As well as getting a whole heap of new Hincapie clothing and throwing their leg over their new racing irons for the first time – there was also the serious job of getting the miles in. These early training camps are about endurance miles for the majority of the team. Once the riders have got over the kid at Christmas feeling that happens every year as they pick up their box-fresh

goodies, they will assemble outside the hotel. Final tweaks from the team mechanics, team cars loaded with spare wheels and they are off. Perfect formation, two by two the team will complete 4 to 6 hours: the two in front swapping off after ten minutes, no matter what the terrain throws at them. Sometimes the group will be split in two – the early season spring classics men doing extra or faster rides while those with targets later in the year concentrate on their fitness base. The ‘through and off’ format is core, similar – if a lot more drilled – to any winter cycling club run. The team may ride every day for the two weeks of the training camps, evenings and downtime are taken up with interviews, photo calls and planning. And rest, plenty of rest. These ‘rest days’ can still consist of a gentle two hour spin along flat roads. If you’ve done an eight hour marathon in the mountains the day before, spinning along actually helps flush the toxins from the muscles. It could work for you too; even a 20 minute spin helps.

turbo trainer brings the outdoors inside. It’s a really valuable tool if you want a cycling fix but time or the weather mean that getting into the big, wide world just isn’t an option. There are loads of different types of turbo trainers but they all have a couple of things in common: they hold your bike steady so you can pedal safely, and they come with a roller that presses against your rear tyre to provide the resistance. That resistance can be supplied by air, oil or magnets. There are even electric-powered turbo trainers, like the Tacx I-Magic, that are computer compatible. The dedicated software means you can virtually ride video footage

You can ride at exactly the level you want to for improving your fitness without getting all togged up in winter kit, take it easy on the descents or waste time dodging through the traffic. A turbo trainer is also useful for improving your technique. We wouldn’t advise you to ride onelegged on the road, for example, but it’s a useful way of improving your pedal stroke when you’re on the turbo, encouraging you to move your feet in circles rather than straight up and down. Below is an example turbo session that you can try once or twice a week. It’ll improve your muscles’ ability to work relatively hard for long periods – which is what cycling fitness is all about…
• Repeat this work/recovery cycle until you’ve completed three intervals. In future you can gradually increase the length of the intervals up to a maximum of 12mins, or add extra intervals up to a maximum of five. • Cool down by riding for 10mins, gradually lowering the intensity until your pedalling becomes very easy.

Now you need your front light to see by and a bright one at the back for maximum rear visibility. That takes us in to the realms of reachargeables, a lot of the most powerful of these are actually designed for off road night riding (see page 28). ne of our very first blog articles we reported on Retail Director Mark Smith’s fact finding trip to the Netherlands, where he explored how commuting by bike and train can really work well together. The basic idea is that commuters should be provided bike-friendly facilities near big railway stations, so they can either leave their bikes at the station or rent a bike so they can explore the city on two wheels. The system works brilliantly in the Netherlands and now Abellio, Northern Rail’s Dutch owner have brought the scheme to the UK – the Leeds CyclePoint is a trial, which will hopefully be followed by many others all across the country. Evans Cycles has won the contract to operate the bike parking and bike rental facilities, which is

accompanied by a small shop. As James, the store’s manager told us, stock is limited and can only cover basic commuting emergencies. However, they are still able to accommodate ship2store orders so you can collect your order at a convenient time. The neatly refurbished, roundshaped building can accommodate up to 300 bikes and the workshop is properly equipped to deal with anything from a puncture to more complex repairs. You can leave your bike there for 24 hours for just a £1. Monthly and annual tickets are also available, for £15 and £120, respectively. Customers with these tickets will be issued with a swipe card which will allow them to retrieve their bike outside of staffed hours (except between the hours of 00.00 and

06.00). Renting a bike is pretty cool too. Right now, they offer a variety of really good quality hybrid bikes that range from straightforward urban commuters to more comfy Dutch-style bikes. The charges start from £8 per day and all you need to present is a passport/driving licence and a valid credit or debit card (with £250 credit for pre-authorisation). Given the massive success of such establishments in the Netherlands, it was a no-brainer to give it a go in the UK and as the pricing is very reasonable we hope to see the idea rolled out to other stations around the country. So in case fate or your job takes you to Leeds, be sure to give it a go – the CyclePoint is conveniently located right in front of Leeds railway station.

Off-road long route
At 10-12 miles the Short route is designed for those that are new to mountain biking or want to build up their fitness – perfect for beginners or family groups. The route involves some challenging terrain and should usually take no more than 2 hours.
Fancy a little bit more? The Long route adds another 5-8 miles distance to the Medium route, which means you’ll be out in the countryside longer for more great riding.
Off-road medium route At 25-30 miles this is our most popular route. It is designed for the riders that want to challenge themselves and spend a few hours in the saddle. The route is suitable for those with off-road experience and a reasonable level of fitness and normally takes between 3 to 5 hours.
