ou’ve clawed it through the grim winter months, determined to hang on to last year’s hard-earned fitness. in the changeable british spring climate, light and versatile clothing is essential
Everyday Road Kit The best place to start is with a good base. A base layer with quality breathable wicking material will prevent sweat from cooling on your skin, and still keep you warm when you need it to. Go for a close fit but make sure it is comfortable and gives you some room. On a warmer day, you can then add a thin jersey, a pair of arm warmers which you can remove and stash away should you need to, and a light-weight jacket or gilet you can whip on and off with ease. You will thank yourself for investing in a light waterproof like this, and if the temperature is cooler, the same item will serve you well over a thicker jersey. In the changeable British spring climate, you want your clothing to be as versatile as possible. Team up your cycling shorts with a pair of leg warmers for full protection or just knee warmers when you set off on those chillier mornings, and pull them off as the pace and weather hots up. Should you want to keep a little bit more covered until the sun really comes out, then try some three-quarter lengths. These are very popular amongst women who appreciate both their comfort and their form-flattering shape.

Exclusive Brand
Louis Garneau Louis Garneau is more than just a brand name. The man behind the brand is actually a very accomplished cyclist, having represented his native Canada at national level in both track and road racing. Louis notched up over 150 victories, travelling around the globe with a racing career that spanned 13 years and saw him become the Canadian national sprint champion. In 1983, in his fathers’ garage, together with his wife, Louis manufactured his very first item of cycle clothing and a brand was born. Although primarily focussed on cycling apparel, Garneau also manufacture clothing for the triathlon, running and winter sports markets. With their HQ based in Quebec, they’re perfectly accustomed to changeable extremes with hot and humid short summers, long, bitterly cold winters with heavy snow and a heck of a lot of rain in between. It is this versatility and adaptability that makes Louis Garneau’s clothing range the perfect choice for the UK’s variable climate.

here are a variety of styles of cycling shoe depending on the type of riding you do. They start from around £60, and as the price increases you can expect greater features and more technica l materials, such as carbon fibre to reduce weight whilst maintaining rigidity . The fastening mechanism and fit is also far superior in top end shoes, providing optimal performance and comfort. The key feature in a cycling shoe is its stiff sole for maximum power tran sfer through to the pedal stroke. The sole will usually have holes for cleats to be fitted, as most shoes are designed to be used with clip less pedals that connect the shoe to the ped al. This system enables you to both push and pull during the pedal stroke, ensuring grea test efficiency. Pedals also var y, generally with a 2 bolt recessed cleat for mountain bike and leisure pedals, and a 3 or 4 bolt fit on road shoes. Clipless pedals start at £30 , with high-end models constructed from adv anced materials providing a lighter, firmer, and more responsive pedal. A specialist shoe with stiff sole, secure fit, and a structured heel cup, as well as a clipless pedal system will make sure your energy is used effectively.

JAMIS Beatnik 2012 (EV148917) A fast and fun single speed bike for the streets. RRP: £299.99
TRACK “Hi, my name’s Tom White and I’m the Store Manager at the National Cycle Centre store. I previously raced at Pro level but these days I just try to get out on the track as and when time allows.” How would you describe track cycling? Track racing is really intense and tactical, fast-paced, high-speed ‘edge of your seat’ action with races won and lost by the smallest of margins. How does track riding differ from road cycling? Track bikes are single speed fixed wheel with no brakes and the racing is much shorter distances compared to on the road. How did you get into track?
My dad took me to Herne Hill Velodrome back in 1996. I started with group training sessions and then joined the local club, Velo Club Londres. What was your first track bike? A classic 1970’s steel Carlton. What kit would you recommend? Get a good pair of lightweight track tyres or carbon wheels, it will transform the way your bike rides. What would you say to someone who is thinking about getting into track? Get yourself booked in for a taster session and see what it’s all about, although be warned you might get hooked!

BMX “I’m Joe Davenport, sales assistant at the NCC store. I ride a custom built Redline Flight Pro XL and race for LoveNotMoney - RSD Sports who are a local team sponsored by Evans Cycles.” How would you describe BMX racing? BMX is fast, action packed, and adrenalinfuelled. Like any sport there are highs and lows, but there is nothing like fighting bar-to-bar for that number one spot. What’s the difference between race and street? Race bikes are stiffer, longer, lighter stripped down BMX’s built for speed. Street is judged on style and trickery whereas race it’s simply the first over the line. How did you get into BMX? I went to a BMX track with a friend who raced and quickly caught the bug. What was your first BMX bike? I first used my street bike which was a Federal Notorious and then bought a race bike. What kit would you recommend? It’s worth investing in some tough BMX or DH kit, top of your list should be a decent helmet, gloves, and pads. If you’re serious, take that next step and get a specialist race bike. What would you say to someone who is thinking about getting in to BMX? Racing BMX is relatively cheap to do and watching can be just as exciting as riding. The BMX community are so helpful and friendly, anybody is welcomed with open arms. Top tips to BMX success? Triathlon
Gareth Evans, Senior Marketing Executive at our Gatwick HQ. “I’ve been competing in triathlon for about 10 years now and have been lucky enough to represent Great Britain within my age group for Olympic distance.” How would you describe triathlon? It’s a challenging but rewarding sport, and with three disciplines to train for it’s never boring! How did you get into triathlon? I was already swimming and running at a competitive level and triathlon was rapidly rising in popularity. I got a cheap entry-level road bike and started competing in short distance, ‘super sprint’ events. What was your first race bike? I had a budget Peugeot road bike which served me well through my early years. What kit would you recommend? For a newbie the Jamis Ventura Comp would be a great bike to test the water with as you will easily be able to use it day in day out, and add some clipon aero-bars for racing. I’d always recommend starting out with a road
bike before progressing to a triathlonspecific bike. What would you say to someone who is thinking about getting into triathlon? It’s important to set yourself a goal, maybe a particular event or just a fitness target and gradually build your training. Too much, too early is a surefire way of getting injured so be sensible with your workload. What are the different distances? There are lots of shorter fun races but generally the most popular events are either the half (known as Sprint), or full Olympic distance which consists of 1500m swim, 40km bike, and a 10km run. Ironman is the true test of strength and endurance with its gruelling format of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bike ride and a marathon to finish. Beginners Tips If you are not from a swimming background enter a pool swim triathlon first as open water mass starts can be tough going for unconfident swimmers. For an open water triathlon you will generally need a wetsuit, starting from £164.99 for Orca’s entry-level S4 suit.

Michelle Arthurs is a Marketing Assistant at Evans Cycles. She competed in her first triathlon in 2010 and hasn’t looked back since: How did you get into tri? I joined a running club at university, and sustained an injury. To maintain my fitness, I learnt to swim, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I already took myself everywhere by bike, so before I knew it I was doing three sports so I decided I might as well try putting them together and have a go at triathlons.

Recommend a good piece of kit? Get a bike that fits you. I had my heart set on one brand but when I tried it, the geometry was so wrong for me. I test rode a Quintana Roo Dolce, and fell in love with it immediately. What advice would you give someone just getting into the sport? Find a good, friendly club where people will answer your questions and support you. Also, take part in inexpensive single sport races, such as cycling time trials or weekly park runs: competition makes for great training.

Machines for Riding From rags to riches: how bmc grew from obscurity to globally successful brand and tour de france winners...
I
t’s a world apart from the humble and relatively recent beginnings of BMC (Bicycle Manufacturing Company), originally established by American Bob Bigelow in 1986 as an assembler and wholesale distributor of Raleigh bicycles. After losing his distributor’s licence in 1994, Bigelow began building bikes under a new label and BMC as a stand-alone bicycle manufacturer was born. The arrival of Swiss businessman and avid bicycle fan, Andy Rihs – initially as a partner in 1998 before eventually becoming the owner in 2000 – heralded a new era for BMC. With vastly increased investment, Swiss-based R&D facilities, exciting new product, a growing global export market and Pro Team sponsorship, the transformation and turnaround of BMC from small-scale, niche Swiss bicycle 30 You can order online and collect in-store
manufacturer to worldwide high-end bicycle brand was complete. A big winter signing and spending spree has resulted in an immense influx of raw talent with established top tier riders like Thor Hushovd, Phillipe Gilbert and Tejay Van Garderen bolstering an already dominant squad. It’s impossible to imagine the team not dictating every race they enter this season, with many people tipping Cadel Evans for the Tour, Gilbert for the Classics with the World Championships and Paris-Roubaix topping Hushovd’s to-do-list. World Champion rainbow stripes and National Champion jerseys already compete for space with the trademark BMC red and black team colours – expect plenty more to come throughout 2012!
Teammachine SLR01 Ultegra Compact 2012 (EV148011) A versatile, Tour-winning machine with cycling’s holy grail blend of low weight, high stiffness and cobble-slaying comfort. Changes for 2012 include a new, lighter 15mm offset seatpost , a swap to Shimano’s Press-Fit BB system, and the introduction of a new Di2-specific frameset. RRP: £3999.99 www.evanscycles.com
Spring 2012 | BMC Aero Hinge Fork – helps to minimise the all-important frontal area and create a seamless aerodynamic junction between fork and frame. 21_21 Seatpost - offers x4 saddle positions (-21/-7/+7/+21mm), which, when combined with the ‘true’ 77° seat tube means a multitude of angles, perfect for both TT or Tri setups (Andreas Ralert runs his TM01 @ 82°).
The 3-piece modular ‘jigsaw’ stem allows for a mind boggling 32 different configurations – allowing riders to really fine tune their riding position.
Integrated Mini V-brakes front and rear sit flush with the fork legs and rear chainstays and provide powerful, consistent pressure.
Di2 Ready – a neat compartment built into the lower section of the seat tube houses the Di2 battery so that’s it’s protected from the elements, knocks, but most importantly windflow.
3:1 UCI Legal – All the truncated tubes on the TM01 conform to the UCI’s 3:1 rule meaning the tubes are no more than three-times deeper than they are wide.

Spring 2012 | Cycling Breaks
Fit for the
season..
W
ith spring in the air and sunlight on the roads, no doubt you’ll be feeling sprightly and looking forward to some summer-time challenges over the coming months. The UK has miles of road and trails to keep you smiling, but a change of scene and some challenging new terrain could do wonders for you fitness. To show you how, a few of us headed off with Saddle Skedaddle for a week of Spanish sunshine and the chance to enjoy both road and MTB action in the perfect weather and an idyllic setting. You might believe that these holidays are
We’ve all the kit you need to make that trip away a success...
reserved for the cycling elite or those with cash burning a hole in their lycra, but the truth is that for no more than the cost of a budget holiday you too could be enjoying days in the saddle and a change of scenery. Whether that means a quick trip within the UK, a hop across the channel to Europe or even a far-flung location such as Cuba or Argentina, with a Saddle Skedaddle cycling holiday, there’s something to not only satiate everyone’s two-wheeled desires but also to work in harmony with their budget. The type of holiday you choose can vary, too. You might prefer something laid back and relaxed or you may be focussed on
your race season ahead and looking for the ultimate training camp to really push your fitness forward. The options are laid out for you at skedaddle.co.uk, so check out what is available! Of course, for many of us cyclists, the freedom of two-wheels doesn’t end when we stop pedalling and this independent spirit means many of us want to plan our own cycling breaks. Getting together with a group of your local cycling buddies to plan a trip en-masse will mean you’re likely to set yourself up for some competition, which will help you to push closer to your potential on your rides.
Afternoon
Morning
Five day fitness diary Day One With minds and bodies fresh and ready to ride, we quickly built up the bikes after a decent continental breakfast and set off for a steady base mile ride to stretch the legs and explore.
Day Two We set off at a brisk pace for a flat 30km to warm up before hitting the hills, pushing hard over the tops and freewheeling down the descents for some much needed recovery.
Day Three Making the most of a lie in we kitted up and headed out for a steady to brisk 100km, with a few coffee breaks slotted in to keep us going.
Day Four After an easy afternoon yesterday we woke up feeling fresh and after a good breakfast hopped on the bikes for a 2 hour out tempo ride, alternating at the front to keep the pace high.
Day Five Keen to make the best of our last day, a sunrise recovery ride along the coast was a must do, getting 30km in before a spot of brunch at a sea-front cafe.
Post lunch we felt strong and ready to face the road again, choosing a relatively flat route along the coast line, with the sun beating down on the fresh tarmac.
The afternoon was a more gentle, breezy ride along yesterdays favoured coast which felt great after sweating and suffering in the hills. The idea was to keep our heart rates lower but competitive spirit made this difficult.
A relaxing afternoon on the hotel terrace with our feet up. Keith braved the sea and dived in for a dip, confirming that it wasn’t as warm as it looked!
After a bite to eat we turned back, riding steady and taking in the sunny sights. Back at the hotel we took time out for a group meal to recount the stories of the day.
We finished the day and rounded up the break with a final ride into the hills, our competitive natures showed as we tried to burn each other off! Home to pack up the bikes and reflect on what had been a brilliant five days.

Whatever your reasons for packing up your beloved bike and belongings and heading off to unchartered territory, it is likely you will need a few additions to you kit bag to ensure you get the most of your break. Firstly, unless you’re driving to your holiday destination then you’re going to need a safe way of transporting your bike. A padded bike bag is the answer and the one we used was an Evoc bike travel bag, but these start from around £100. Make sure you book your bike on as separate luggage as there is usually a little extra cost. If you’re visiting a new area then a navigational aid such as Garmin’s range-topping Edge 800 will not only help you to find your way but also show others where you’ve been, how tough it was, how fast you rode and how much fun you had! There are ways you can limit this stress, by reducing the element of bad luck from creeping in as much as possible. Carrying the right spares should mean a worry-free break. The bare minimum is a multitool, a mini-pump, a pair of tyre levers and a few inner tubes, and back pocket snacks. If you’re going on an organised break, look for the back-up facilities on offer – chances are they offer full workshop facilities and a support vehicle. Don’t be put off by the logistics of a cycling holiday – organise it properly and pack the essentials to ensure trips a memorable one!

Pinnacle of evolution
Six years on, our Pinnacle brand has gone from strength to strength...
P
innacle bikes were established in 2006 with the sole aim of applying our expertise, experience and enthusiasm into producing bikes suited to both our customers and the environment and conditions they ride in. Pinnacle 2012 is an evolution of the existing range, with every model revised for a refined fit and feel, giving the bikes a definable ride quality. The Pinnacle brand was re-launched last year featuring modern, simple styling and a new brand manager was appointed to develop the 2012 range. The man given the responsibility of establishing that hard-to-define ride quality and character was James Olsen, an award-winning and highly acclaimed British bicycle designer: “The overall aim for the 2012 range was not to go off in a radical new direction as I already liked the current line-up but to develop the range by stripping back every model from the frame up. I want to build bikes that make you grin 36 You can order online and collect in-store
as you pedal and love the idea that riding your Pinnacle may be a lifestyle-changing decision.” James tells us. Aimed at first and second time buyers, Pinnacle bikes focus on the leisure and commuter rider, creating bikes that cross the practical, fun, and sport categories. James strongly believes that this genre of light and functional bikes is something that really can change our towns and cities for the better, and new cyclists are an important part of all our futures. “Cycling and sustainable transport is a cause that I’m passionate about. At the weekends I see more riders out on country lanes or forest paths who aren’t riding traditional mountain or racing bikes, or dressed in team-replica kit, they’re simply out riding for the enjoyment of cycling. As someone who started with a BMX, then mountain bikes in the Eighties and is now a lifelong cycle-addict, I find this inspiring to see. I hope they continue to discover the benefits of two wheeled fun and transport.
Pinnacle Lithium Four (EV158628) For the tough city streets there’s the Lithium, a fast and rugged hybrid with design inspiration from the 29er frames we’re working on. The refined riding position and sturdy componentary puts you in full control so you can tackle the streets with confidence. RRP: £499.99 www.evanscycles.com

The lightweight and versatile Neon is without doubt the fastest way to navigate through the city. Mudguard eyelets and rear pannier rack mounts make the Neon ideal option for fast commuting duties whilst the ever-dependable Shimano/FSA components ensure longterm performance and reliability.

A COMMUTE THAT ISN’T TAXING... Save money and get fit on your way to work.
G
etting to work doesn’t need to be a daily hassle, it can be a slice of enjoyment to start and end your day. With help from the government Ride2Work scheme choosing to cycle won’t have a hefty price tag either. We explain how to get the most out of what’s on offer: Q: What is the cycle to work scheme? The cycle to work scheme is the ultimate employee benefit that aims to make getting to work by bike a hassle-free and affordable option. Through the scheme employees hire bikes from their employer through a process of salary sacrifice which is spread over 12 or 18 months.
Q: Why get a bike through the scheme? You can save between 32% and 42% on the cost of a brand new bike and all the accessories you need to enjoy cycling. These savings are achieved because you don’t pay Income Tax or National Insurance on the part of your salary which is being exchanged for the hire of the bike. Another huge benefit of the scheme is being able to enjoy riding your new bike while spreading payment for the bike over a year through your salary. Through cycling to work you can benefit from a happier, fitter commute and reduce your travel costs while doing your bit for the environment! Plus you can ride the bike during your leisure time, too!
38 Our Price Match promise means you can shop with confidence
Q: Who can participate in the scheme? Anyone can join as long as their employer offers the scheme and are paid through the PAYE system. Over 500,000 people have already taken up the offer. Q: What bikes and accessories can you get? Over 50 bike brands are available from Evans Cycles and every style of bike is available through the scheme. In addition you can get a complete package of accessories including lights, locks, helmets, bags, mudguards and reflective clothing.
www.evanscycles.com
How do you join the scheme and get a bike? STEP 1: Check whether your company offers a cycle to work scheme. Your HR department should be able to advise you on what you need to do next.
STEP 2: Decide what bike and accessories you want and work out the costs. You can do this in-store, via our website or by giving our contact centre a call. We can give you a written quote if required by your company.
STEP 3: Once you have confirmed your choices you will complete an online application form and hire agreement. Your employer will approve your request and a certificate will be sent to you by post or via email.
What happens at the end of the scheme? Once the salary sacrifice is completed (after 12 or 18 months) you can get the option to purchase the bike. There are several different ways this can happen, depending on what option your employer has chosen, but the overall aim is to ensure that scheme rules are followed without impacting on your savings. Evans Cycles accepts Ride2Work and Cyclescheme certificates. A recent survey of employees participating in the cycle to work scheme highlighted the excellent benefits: • 80% are fitter • 60% are saving money on travel costs • 55% are happier
To find out what you can save go to www.evanscycles.com/ride2work/ savingscalculator
STEP 4: You can redeem your certificate in-store, online or over the phone. Your salary sacrifice payments usually commence the following month.

FOLDING HYBRID You decide
Pick the right bike for your commute and reap the rewards of riding to work...
C
hoosing to commute by bike can mean big rewards: free fitness, a lift to your mood as you escape traffic and train timetables, as well as great cash savings. The investment is even greater if you get your bike tax free through a cycle to work scheme. All that might be true - but it still leaves the question of what bike to go for. The most popular models for riders looking to commute are hybrids and folding bikes. If you are likely to be getting on and off trains, a folding bike will mean that you can easily take your riding partner on board. The bikes are simple to flip open and when you arrive at your destination will sit ready and waiting for you. Selecting this option also means you can travel around town during
the day, pull the bike out when you need it without the worry and inconvenience of chugging around with a cumbersome lock, as its compact size means there is no need for it to leave your side. Slim handlebars are ideal for whizzing through traffic, and the bikes are easily adjustable to fit different shapes and sizes. For example, the Tern Link D8 has a quick release stem which means you can share it with other family members or work colleagues. For a sportier lifestyle a hybrid bike, which is nestled between a road bike and a mountain bike, offers a bit more bulk to your bike. Unlike the racy roadster, a hybrid puts the passenger in a more comfortable, upright position for city riding, but is more suited to a city environment than a mountain bike might be.
Main: Michelle wears the Endura Windchill Jacket and rides the folding Tern Link D8; Gareth wears the Endura Flyte Jacket and rides the Trek 7.3 FX D hybrid. Left and above: Folding bikes are portable and compact but if you want something a little sportier for everyday including weekends a cross bike like the Genesis CdF is an ideal alternative.

en Reid and I started riding for Norco in 2009 when we collaborated to establish the Dirt Norco Race Team and we have grown with them ever since. From the start, one of the things that attracted me to the company was the enthusiasm and passion for the sport that everyone we met seemed to share, making it an exciting manufacturer to work with. Norco have invested heavily in the development necessary to produce such a competitive race bike over these last few years. They have listened and put the lessons learned from racing into the Aurum and the rest of the production

bike range for 2012. We got to know Owen Pemberton and PJ Hunton, the lead design engineers, really early on because they were continuously looking at new ways to push the technology, so were constantly looking to the race team for feedback from the front line. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to work with with such smart guys as they have been developing the Aurum, which has become our chosen Downhill race bike. Owen and PJ are interested in every last detail of the feedback gained from testing on the World Cup circuit. One interesting example of development came from analysing the geometry that Ben

and I both preferred. Initially our data looked quite different but taking into account the fact that I’m five inches taller than Ben (I’m 6’1”, he’s 5’8”), what we were looking for in terms of balance and weight distribution was close to identical, proportionally at least. In the past with the conventional sizing standard (where front end length was increased throughout the size range but everything else remained the same) one of us would have had to compromise. But not now, thanks to the Gravity Tune concept unique to Norco, bikes are scaled across the whole frame so proportions can be optimised for all rider sizes and the suspension performance can be easily tweaked to suit different weights and riding styles. We raced on prototypes of these bikes for well over a year, passing on every last detail as our experience on the bike grew and the race season progressed – all of which Owen and PJ have used to end up with the best handling bike I’ve ever ridden in 2012. As I’m sure you can imagine, we are very excited about the launch of this bike along with the rest of the new 54 Standard UK delivery is FREE on all UK orders
Norco range. Much of the technology developed on the downhill bike is also in production throughout many of the bikes in the 2012 range. This includes the ART suspension and Syntace axle systems along with the new styling and attention to detail which adds up to a huge step forward across the whole Norco range this year - it’s great that Evans’ customers will be able to experience the same level of performance that we’re lucky enough to enjoy. The first race is shortly approaching along with the addition of Duncan Riffle as a third rider to the Dirt Norco team. I am confident that I can speak for all of us when I say we are really looking forward to racing with Norco for the team’s fourth year.

Prolong that new bike feeling with our choice of first class servicing options
I
t is vitally important that you keep your bike well maintained. Looking after your investment will ensure that it performs as it should, is always a pleasure to ride and will last for many years to come. Whilst regular cleaning and lubing may seem like an obvious piece of advice for the longevity of your bike, what far fewer people realise is that, just like a car, you should also have it professionally serviced at regular intervals. The occasional bucket of hot soapy water and a squirt of oil just won’t cut it! Each Evans Cycles store has a fully equipped workshop to carry out all necessary bike builds and repairs with between two and eight Cytec qualified mechanics ready to take care of your bike. We are the only cycle retailer that

has its own dedicated full-time Cytec trainer and in-house training facility – allowing us to maintain the highest industry standards. Mechanics receive regular training and assessment to keep them up to date with all the latest developments and, of course, to ensure consistency and great service. We offer a variety of servicing options from our comprehensive Gold standard service to the more basic Bronze option to help keep your bike running like clockwork. The level of service needed will depend on the overall condition of your bike and the amount of miles you’ve racked up on it. Our mechanics will happily assess your bike and advise which service would be best undertaken. Every new bike has a bedding-in

Whether you fancy being a master of maintenance or simply a more confident shed tinkerer, our FixIt! courses offer something for everyone. To ensure your cycling is both a fun and safe experience, one of our FixIt! maintenance classes, held bi-monthly in store, offers a great way to help you get the best from your bike. The course will provide you with all the basic maintenance skills needed to keep your bike tip-top. We will teach you about the components on your bike, safety checks to make before you ride, how to deal with a puncture, how to clean and re-lube your chain as well as basic gear and brake adjustment. Instead of leaving your bike in the shed unused for years with flat tyres or wearing your chain and gears down with neglect, Fix It! will give you the confidence to turn tricky tasks into quick fixes as your knowledge grows. The session lasts an hour and involves both theory and demonstrations. Each place on the course costs £15 with over £15 worth of free maintenance accessories to take away at the end to get you started. To book a place on a course, contact your local Evans Cycles store or find out more at evanscycles.com/Fix-It
period – normally between three and six weeks depending on use. Gears and brakes will go out of adjustment as the cables stretch and if left unadjusted riding will soon become a chore rather than the pleasure that it should be. So, it is really important to get your bike tuned-up at this point to ensure it runs as smoothly as it should and to extend the life of the components for as long as possible. We want you to enjoy your new bike as much as possible and for this reason we offer a free first service on all new bikes. Your bike will receive a full health-check by one of our Cytec qualified mechanics and be back on the
road the same day, with all those niggly rattles and clicks miraculously removed! Our workshops can get very busy though, so we would recommend you book your bike in as far in advance as possible – although we will always try to accommodate those emergency repairs to keep you on the road. Booking an appointment can be done either in-store or on the phone. We offer both same and next day services – dependent on parts stock availability, and with many of our stores open 8am – 8pm during the week, you can drop your bike off on the way to work and collect it on your way home.

SPRING
CLEAN
Keep it clean and enjoy a smooth ride all year round
C
leaning your bike doesn’t take long, and could make all the difference to how it performs. The drivetrain is prone to picking up grime and dirt. Muc-Off produce an array of products to solve every cyclist’s cleaning conundrum, from whizzy chain cleaners to specialist brushes that clean the parts that others can’t reach. Now’s the time to ditch that old toothbrush! To keep the gears clicking up and down nicely, give the chain and gear components a wipe down with a rag and degreaser, and then relube. This is a process you should do fairly regularly, and then from time to time apply some light oil to the cable outers if you get any problems. You can add this to the pivots and derailleurs as well as the brakes to keep everything smooth.

Hose your bike down, soak it with Muc-Off’s amazing bike cleaner and reward yourself with a nice cup of tea while the special formula eats into the grease and grime without damaging your bike. Then, just a quick brush over, rinse and job done - your bike is back to its immaculate best.

RIDE
Maintain, improve or restyle your bike to suit you...
A
s with pretty much anything, with time and use you will need to replace and upgrade parts on your bike; particularly those that work hard like the chain, tyres and brakes. Looking after your bike and replacing worn parts will help ensure prolonged reliability, while upgrading certain items to a higher specification will enhance both performance and comfort. Improving your bike doesn’t have to be expensive so whatever your budget, you’re sure to find something for that little extra gain. Accessories will help make your bike more versatile and practical. A simple drinks bottle cage will make sure you stay well hydrated, mudguards help on those showery days, and a set of panniers will carry all you need for work or play. Replacing the grips or bar tape and saddle for something with extra cushioning will increase comfort, whilst fitting tough resilient tyres will reduce the risk of puncturing. If it’s speed you’re after then try a pair of high performance tyres with a low rolling resistance, and if your budget is a little bigger then you may want to replace the standard wheelset with a lighter, stiffer pair.

02 TREK System 1 Bar Ends (120004)
03 BONTRAGER Gel Cork Tape (119964)
04 SPECIALIZED Avatar Gel Saddle (EV139034)
An easy way to update and improve your MTB. The chances of your standard bars being perfect for your height and riding style are slim, so it’s well worth trying out a few different options. The EA50 riser bar is a tough, resilient bar with Taperwall technology for awesome handling and control.
Replacing your handlebars completely is one option, another is to add a different hand hold position, particularly if you’re something of a climber. Trek’s System 1 bar ends are an easy, lightweight bolt-on addition to fit any MTB handlebar and can be angled to suit your preferred riding style.
If you’re after an extra bit of palm cushioning for those long rides, then gel bar tape is the way to go as it absorbs some of the road vibration, reducing fatigue and soreness. If you are contemplating a cyclo-sportive it is definitely worth investing in padded tape as well as a good set of gloves.
One of the most popular upgrades, with some older and entry level bikes lacking in seat comfort. Many riders complain that long rides can be, quite literally, a pain in the backside. Specialized’s Avatar Gel Saddle provides supple support making it a great choice for big sportive rides.

Over time, wheels take a real pounding. They put up with problematic potholes, callous kerbs and dodgy drain covers. Add to that a milion revolutions and sooner or later they’re going to cry enough. A replacement set needn’t cost the earth and add a feeling of newness and reduced rolling resistance. Lighter wheels will even help you climb, too. RRP: £59.99

JAMIS Durango Comp 2012 Mountain Bike RRP: £549.99 (EV148900) On receiving the Jamis, I was pleasantly surprised! The styling is sleek and modern with an appealing colour scheme and reasonable componentry. Ok aesthetic test done and that’s a big pass from the little £550 offthe-shelf build. On the trails the bike surpassed expectation, performing way beyond its price tag. The gears were crisp and efficient, whilst the brakes felt sharp…far removed from the low level, soggy shifting, clunky budget machine I had been expecting.
This budget busting bike delivered big on smiles, holding its own against much more expensive counterparts with assured handling and a fun, responsive ride. In summary, this is a great little bike for the money and would suit someone looking for a tough, do-it-all entry level mtb that can cope with the daily commute and weekend burn!

LOUIS GARNEAU Sharp Helmet
Age: 40-45 Style: Road Experience: Regular Gender: Male
RRP: £69.99 (EV161782) A real item of taste, helmets seem to come in such a variety of shapes and colours, that choosing one that A: fits and B: doesn’t make you look like an extra from Dr Who isn’t always easy. PINNACLE Evaporite Two
The bike felt great – fast and responsive
RRP: £1499.99, NOW £1299.99 (EV148872) With the choice of a ropey old training bike or my top-end Dura-Ace equipped race bike, I was keen to try a mid-range bike squarely pitched at the sportive rider. After all, if I’m not training or racing, I’m riding sportives – so it kind of made a lot of sense. What struck me first about the Evaporite Two was the specification. I’d been looking around for something with a similar level of equipment and struggled to find anything that matched my tastes to my budget – this bike is spot-on. So far I’ve been out on it three times and other than my natural inclination to tinker with stem lengths, the relaxed set-up is perfect for long rides without the usual 70-mile neck-ache while the frameset offers plenty of stiffness for those out-of-thesaddle uphill grinds. In fact it’s really rather responsive. 167 miles in I’m suitably impressed with Pinnacle’s Evaporite Two.

IN THE WORKS…
F.W. EVANS THE BRAND IS STILL THRIVING 90 YEARS ON...
F
W. Evans first set up shop on Kennington Road back in 1921 where he began selling lightweight road and touring frames. He was an innovative and forward thinking man with a passion for cycling and this was reflected in the bikes he built. Renowned for creativity and ideas that aimed to improve the rider’s experience, FW’s bikes were a club rider’s favourite stripped down for week night racing and loaded up for the weekend touring. The F.W.Evans brand is one which is steeped in history and an inspiring part of our long and proud heritage. It was a pioneering brand with both an innovative approach and traditional values that lead to his frames and components receiving awards and patents. This year we will be re-launching F.W.Evans Cycles with a range inspired by Frederick Evan’s

original designs. Made in the UK from uniquely profiled Reynolds 853 and 631 tubing, the F.W.Evans range will continue his traditions with the benefits of modern manufacturing capabilities. We’re excited by the opportunity to go back to where we started. If F.W.Evans hadn’t stopped making bikes in the 80s, what would the bikes be like now? The last F. W. Evans bikes sold in London were hand-made by skilled frame builders in the UK and this is an important aspect of what we’re doing today. We’re focussed on UK manufacturing and European components to produce bikes that are as close to his ideals and the brand history as possible. Adding our knowledge as cyclists and designers, we aim to restore a much-loved and respected British bike brand to its rightful position.
