The latest hot products now in-store or arriving over the coming weeks Quintana Roo

‘We are Triathlon’ sums up this exciting bike brand which is exclusive to Evans Cycles. In 1981 founder Dan Empfield competed in the first Ironman on Hawaii’s Big Island. As a pioneer of the sport, he envisioned a bright future for it, but felt something was lacking: High-quality equipment that accommodated the needs of triathletes. Doug invented Quintana Roo and went on to invent both the triathlonspecific bicycle (1989) and wetsuit (1987). The same creative juices that created the innovative fit and features that first made triathletes go faster are flowing again today, as is evident in all their bikes. With both mens and womens models Quintana Roo really is triathlon!

2 by 10 gearing One key trend seems to be popping up in the mountain biking world: less is more. New 2 x 10 gearing is definitely following this trend. Instead of using a standard 3 x 9 gearing companies like SRAM and Shimano have changed standard gear ratios to give riders less weight, easier shifting, and better performance in a variety of conditions. Orginally designed to drop weight on XC racing bikes 2 x 10 gearing has become so popular that many trail bikes are now using it. Check out the BMC Speedfox SF01 on page 50 to see this SRAM XO 2 x 10 set up on a bike!

SPRING FEVER

IT’S WARMER (JUST), THE DAYS ARE LONGER... SPRING IS HERE!

W

e made it! Winter is behind us, the days are getting longer, and riding a bike is a whole lot easier again. It’s time to swap to spring clothing, get into the saddle, and enjoy yourself. Spring’s warmer temperatures mean you can go for lighter, more breathable kit and wear fewer layers at last. It’s so much easier to get your clothing right than it is in winter. However, there can still be a chill in the air on some days so look for multi-purpose clothing that you

08 І Spring 2011

can wear in different ways according to the conditions. For example, on a chilly day a thick jersey will do the job, but you’ll only wear it on those cold days. Go for a lighter jersey that’s more versatile and you can wear it on top of a base layer on warm rides, or underneath a windproof when it’s cooler. Remember too that those little April showers can start to drip, drip, drop without any warning, so make sure you stash a waterproof in a back pocket, just in case. Again, go for something

lightweight and you can use it right through summer whereas anything with insulation will have to be consigned to the back of the wardrobe in a few weeks. Rather than heading out in full-on arctic regalia, you can shed a layer or two and instantly feel more comfortable. As spring develops you will probably feel brave enough to start showing a bit of skin too. Those thick tights or long trousers that served you so well over winter can be put away for a few months and three-quarters can be used instead. You’ll get a bit of air to your calves but can

still keep your hard-working knees warm and creak-free. Light weight base layers, arm, knee, and leg warmers are the other spring time essentials. Simple garments that add great versatility to your cycling wardrobe. On a fresh morning wear knee or leg warmers with your shorts. That way, you have the option of taking them off mid-ride if things start to warm up. If you have been riding in a heavy jacket over winter you can probably resign it now and go for a more breathable longsleeve jersey instead. One with windproof panels on the front may be preferrable for a few more weeks yet, or you could go for the cyclist’s perennial favourite, the gilet. Gilets are perfect for spring. By keeping the wind off your chest they make a huge difference to your core temperature on a cool morning, but they are small enough to roll up and stuff away in a pocket when the sun starts to shine. Plus, a gilet is versatile for all the upcoming seasons - you can wear it on top of a short-sleeve jersey for summer evening rides, and it is an absolute essential in the autumn. Spring is one of the best seasons for cycling. Pick the right clothing to enjoy the long days and longer rides, and have fun out there... G

et it right and you’re all set to stay comfy on your ride. The only trouble is, there are loads of different styles and materials to choose from: long sleeved; short sleeved; and a whole array of man made and natural fibres… so which one to choose? A base layer’s main job is to shift moisture away from your body so you stay dry. The problem with a cotton T-shirt is that it’ll get damp and stay damp, even if you’re just pedalling around town. Don’t even think about it for a sports ride. Most base layers are made from technical man made fibres like polyester and polypropylene which wick sweat from your skin, transport it outwards, and dry fast. They can only do their job properly when in contact with your body, so you need to get a close fit. Hence, a stretchy fabric makes a lot of sense. In cooler weather or stop-start rides, you may want a base layer that adds some extra warmth too, so rather than going for a shortsleeve option, choose something with long sleeves and a heavier weight fabric. Merino wool can provide good insulation. The finest merino is incredibly soft and smooth, and it stays comfy if you work up a sweat. It doesn’t start to hum after a while in the saddle either, so it’s ideal if you’re going to spend the day in the same clothes you ride in. Plus, like all base layers, merino comes in different weights, so you can get cooler versions for summer too.

MR WAGSTAFF’S BICYCLE

William Wagstaff purchased his bicycle on May 14th, 1929 from FW Evans on Kennington Road. As a member of the Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) he spent his spare time cycling all over the country. During the War he rode his FW Evans tourer from Croydon to Bermondsey telephone exchange everyday where he worked as an engineer. Mr Wagstaff no longer rides his beloved bike but after thousands of miles, it is still in full working order and can be seen on display at the London Transport Museum. www.ltmuseum.co.uk

Roger St. Pierre is a regular contributor to Cycling + and has been covering the sport, and pastime for half a century.

Spring 2011 І 17

Before the Second World War inco nspicuous clothing was de rigueur for cycling – with black tights and alpaca jackets mandato ry in time trials and plus fours, and tweed jackets worn for leisure rides. In a world where trends are recurring and all things retro are back in-mode, the woollen jerseys, long socks, and tweed attir e is also making a fashionable comeback. Today’s commuter bike boom is not a new phenomenon. Photos of the London Bridge rush hour from the 1920s through to the British cycling golden age of the 1950s reveal a sea of bicycles. But then came the motor scooter and cars like Minis and Ford Anglias to provide affordabl e motoring and divert an entire generation away from cycling. When the pioneering British Leag ue of Racing Cyclists re-introduced massed-start road racing in 1942, Evans Cycles was on hand to supply the kit – shorts and colourful racing tops , and bikes fitted with multiple gearing rather than the single-speed fixed-wheel that, up till then, had dominated both sporting and leisure riding. In anot her case of ‘what goes around, comes around’ fixed gear bikes

or ‘fixies’ have now made a comebac k as the drive chain of choice for the urban rider around town. Cycling technology has come a long way in 90 years, FW played his part – innovatio ns on his touring bikes were winning awards within a few years of his shop opening. The ‘Eva ns Oval’ tubing is still found on modern day bikes. Technology has continued to deve lop with the introduction of indexed gears, lowpro frames, suspension forks, ergo levers and clipl ess pedals. Evans Cycles have embraced thes e innovations and new types of bikes, with the rise of BMX in the Seventies and Mountain Bike in the Eighties, whilst FW’s original Tourer has gone from a cutting edge desig n to a timeless desig n classic. As the bikes have changed so have the cyclists and Evans has catered for them all, from the seasoned road racer to the evolving generations. For 90 years the Evans team have been there, providing support and advice to cycli ng newcomers attracted by the allure of the open road, empty trails, or the simple hum an desire to save on the bus fare and get fitter at the same time.

How to: Have a perfect Sportive Entering sportives requires a bit of preparation and some on the day essentials. Firstly, you’ll need to find your event and see if it suits your fitness level. Most events have a choice of distances (usually options of 30, 60 or 90 miles) so this is the easiest way of choosing a route that’s best for you. Nearly all events can be entered online

through the event website, most have an entry fee but it’s usually a small amount to enjoy marked routes, aide stations, and generally having the hassle taken out of your weekend ride! It’s important to make sure your bike is well serviced and in good condition a few days beforehand. On the day, ensure you’ve got a helmet, enough to eat and

drink (feed stations are usually provided, but always make sure you’ve got your own). A basic toolkit including a spare tube, levers and pump are essential. Some extra clothing options are recommended as conditions can change when you’re out all day. Lastly, take your phone with you in case you get into trouble or go off course.

Gore Bike Wear Power Thermo Bib Tight £52.99 RRP: £74.99 (123275) If, like me, you considered bib tights the preserve of either pro cyclists or the wrestlers from Saturday wrestling in the 70’s then think again as they really are worth considering. When you first put them on I promise you that flashbacks of Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks will be short lived and you’ll soon begin to realise the benefits they offer. These Gore tights are extremely comfortable, not least given the straps means there’s no elastic

digging into your waist. These, combined with the foot straps, make them fit like the proverbial glove. The length of the tights full length lower and height cut back - are perfect for when the weather gets a bit cooler...

(121831) This is a remarkable hybrid of long-sleeved jersey and windjacket. The wind-proof panels on the chest and front of the sleeves are amazingly effective at keeping the cold out on descents, and the combination of full length zip and breathable fabric at the back and sides allow reasonable cooling on the climbs. The jersey is a snug fit, so no flapping in the wind, the sleeves are a good length, and made on the curve, and the jersey is constructed so that it is comfortable in the riding

position with no pulling under the arms. This jersey is black with white print, and I felt strangely smart, almost formal, wearing it. This is a high quality, well designed jersey, ideal for all conditions...

Gore Bike Wear Phantom Jacket £99.99 RRP: £119.95 (122314) I wear this jacket on my daily commute and also on those weekend rides when I’m unsure what the weather is going to do which, in the UK, is most days. The jacket comfortably fits over my clothing for my communte to work and as I have the yellow jacket, the high visability makes me feel that little bit safer when surrounded by drivers who may not be so fond of cyclists...

Helly Hansen Stripe Crew Dry Base Layer £26.99 (122756) This was my underlayer of choice when I embarked on my 11 hour, 105 mile multisport journey across Scotland and I couldn’t have been more pleased. Even after such a long time there was no uncomfortable rubbing that can plague you in such an event. I was always warm and when I got wet, the base layer dried quickly. A must for all weather riding even if to just stash in your pack when out for some longer miles.

Veho Muvi Camera with Sports Pack bundle £69.99 RRP: £99.99 (104229) Really impressed with the size and quality. Life-limit could be an issue for those using it for very long rides but for shorter (2-3 hr) rides, this product is fantastic. Also very adaptable for ski helmets/anything else you can think of! birthdaybuyer

Cycleops Fluid 2 Trainer £224.99 RRP: £249.99 (104157) This product is very quiet in use. Easy to set up and gives a very tough workout if required. It appears well built and sturdy. Definitely highly recommend to anyone. Evans also price matched, with quick delivery. JohnnieR

Spring 2011 | GPS Buying Guide GPS A bike GPS works a lot like a car one but with added fitness and training features. Although GPS is best known for navigation, the simplest ones don’t actually provide mapping out on the road or trail. Garmin’s Edge 500 (£249.99 with cadence sensor and HRM) uses satellite tracking to give your speed and distance so you don’t need to fit a separate sensor to your bike. When back in the comfort of your home you can download the data and check your training. If you just need a GPS to see where you are going and don’t need a training package the Memory Map 3500 (£379.99) is perfect. However, if you really want cutting-edge technology, Garmin’s new Edge 800 (from £399.99) includes full on and off road OS mapping, step-by-step navigation and many other functions in a very user-friendly package. This newest generation of GPS comes with free software that allows you to first plan your ride, navigate the route, then review the data and share it with your friends. It’s clever stuff!

heartbeat, which is the best indication of how hard you’re exercising. A HRM is another good way of seeing how your fitness is improving - as you get fitter, your heart rate will come down for a given level of work. Plus, a HRM will allow you to follow fitness programs based on intensity. For example, a program might suggest that you ride for an hour at 60-65 percent of your maximum heart rate. Most HRMs allow you to punch in this training zone and will let you know if you stray outside the limits. Many HRMs are recordable and downloadable too so you can check over your exercise when you get home (such as the Polar CS200cad, £124.49). Once uploaded on your computer, you can review everything on the manufacturer’s software to see how you are progressing. Beware though, it can become addictive!

Q&A

Ride2Work’s Mark Brown gives you the info you need to get on your bike...

M

any of our readers have probably taken advantage of our Ride2Work scheme to help them get cycling to work. It’s a fantastic Government initiative which promotes cycling by offering savings of up to 50% on the cost of a new bike through a range of tax breaks facilitated through employers. There has been some confusion surrounding the scheme following changes which took place in 2010. We spoke to our head of Ride2Work, Mark Brown to find out more and answer your questions. Q: What are the changes to the scheme? In August 2010 HMRC (that’s the tax man) announced new rules regarding how bikes hired through the scheme should be valued at the point when ownership of the bike is transferred from an employer to an employee. As a form of employee benefit, and because the bike is owned by the employer, HMRC view the transfer of ownership as a transaction which has a taxable value and must be fully compliant with current tax law. In the past an employee was asked to pay a low value for the bike in order to

take ownership of it. Following these changes new guidelines have been provided to help employers calculate the correct Fair Market Value of a bike. Q: So what are the new valuation guidelines? Employers now calcuate the value of the bikes according to a sliding scale: the older the bike, the cheaper it becomes for the employee to take ownership. The salary sacrifice payments occur in the first 12 months however usage of the bike can continue at no extra cost for much longer. The longer the hire period the greater the savings for employees, which means they pay a lower cost for taking ownership of the bike and equipment. Q: What are you recommending to Ride2Work customers? Our advice to employers is to either fix a longer term for the hire agreement up front, eg, 4 years, or offer an ongoing flexible hire agreement with a maximum term of 6 years. The salary sacrifice payments are taken in year one but use of the bike continues for free until such time as ownership is transferred. Therefore in the first option a 4 year hire agreement means the employee pays either 3%

From a health, fitness and environmental point of view it’s a winner. Saving £4 per day bus fair is a bonus.

CASE Studie 1: Rob Green Designer, firebox.com. Tax rate: Lower Rate What you bought through the scheme: Charge Plug ‘10 singlespeed bike, Abus lock, front and rear light set, bike pump, multi tool, and gloves. Where you live and the distance of your commute to work: I live in London and do a 15 mile round trip each day to work. Key benefits: I’m starting to feel fitter than I have in a long time and my journey time has shortened (It’s quicker than taking the tube or bus for me).

CHARGE Plug single speed ‘11 (EV138714) Fast becoming an urban classic the Plug is fast yet reliable. Tange heated frame keeps it strong yet light for a great ride.

£599.99 or 7% of the value of the bike to take ownership. In the second option, usage continues for up to 6 years at which point the bike has no value and ownership has no cost. The scheme is really flexible. So if an employee leaves the company at any point during the agreed hire period then ownership can be transferred at that time, based on the fair market valuation cost. This is a great solution ensuring employers offer a compliant scheme. It is easier to administer and employees can still take advantage of fantastic savings. Q: Are there any other options? Employers can choose to process the transfer of ownership cost as a benefit in kind, otherwise known as a P11d. This is standard process for lots of companies and means the employee pays tax or the fair market cost of ownership. We are continuing to investigate other options to make the scheme as appealing as possible for all involved. A complete article on these changes can be found here: bit.ly/r2work or call the team on 01293 572325. www.evanscycles.com/ride2work

heathland, rocks, Britain’s got the lot, it’s fantastic to ride, and it’s all reasonably accessible too. First port of call for most new riders is a purpose-built trail centre. The Red Bull trail at Coed y Brenin in North Wales is generally credited with being the first officiallysanctioned, professionally-built singletrack trail in Britain, and since it opened in 1997 many more trails and centres have been developed across the country. Trail centres have loops for all skill levels, offering a user-friendly introduction to off-road riding and still delivering a challenging ride when you’ve built some experience. The appeal is obvious – graded and

48 І Spring 2011

waymarked trails mean you know what you’re getting into and are unlikely to get lost, and there’s generally a cafe for tea and cake at the end. Don’t worry if you don’t have an MTB yet – most trail centres have on-site hire shops, or an entry level bike won’t break the bank. Trail centres also work well as a base to explore further afield. They tend to be located in suitably hilly parts of the country, and generally there are plenty of other trails within striking distance. Grab an Ordnance Survey map and look for the long dashed pink lines – those are the trails you can ride and there are plenty of them. As your experience and confidence grows, you won’t look back.

W

hen buying a lock there can be several confusing looking contraptions. Locks are rated by Sold Secure, a simple universal guide which shows the strength of a lock. Look for a lock with a high Sold Secure rating (either gold or silver) – these are the most attack proof. D-locks and Chains are generally considered the most secure of the bunch. However, the downside to strength is their weight, that’s the trade off for peace of mind. For a more portable option try a cable lock, these come in a variety of weights and are ideal if your stopping at the shops on the way home from work. To get the best out of any lock you need to use it properly, that means getting as much of your bike into whatever type of lock you are using. Shielding the locking mechanism is a good idea too, but the golden rule is to always lock your bike to something solid. Use a lock well and you will tame the urban jungle.

STORE

NEWS

Evans Cycles Holborn has had a refit, come check out this hidden gem in London

It’s just a stones throw away from Oxford St and Covent Garden!

H

olborn, not the most obvious spot for a specialist cycle store but amidst the hustle and bustle of Central London this store has been serving its loyal customers for some time. It has just undergone a face lift so we thought it would be the perfect time to show off this store. Evans Cycles Holborn caters to all types of cyclists but has its roots in commuting and road riding, although its not uncommon to see a customer heading out to do some exploring on a new mountain bike. London has never been more cycle friendly thanks to the introduction of 62 І Spring 2011

the Boris bikes and other initiatives the Mayor has implemented. The store can now be rather busy at lunch time and after work where these budding new cyclists, and grizzled veterans eye up their new kit. The Holborn store is small and perfectly formed, and enjoys daily deliveries from our central warehouse in Sussex which brings customers any item in stock or on our website for next day delivery. A perfect solution to get all those bits you need for the upcoming weekend ride! With a fully functioning workshop run by Cytech trained mechanics and the London central workshop on

a daily delivery, cyclists can ensure their bikes are kept in smooth running order. As in all Evans Cycles stores the Holborn shop runs free Fix it! maintenance classes on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of every month, just ask the team to book your place. With free test rides on all bikes and our Price Promise guarantee, where we will match any genuine quote, this is a great store to pop into if you are in Central London. The friendly team will be happy to help with all your cycling questions (and maybe some general ones too) so head down - it’s just a stones throw away from Oxford St and Covent Garden! www.evanscycles.com

In Brief

Leeds Central and Wimbledon Open! We reported in our last catalogue that these two stores were opening at the end of 2010. Both are open and serving their local customers. The Leeds central store is a great complement to the Cyclepoint which is proving to be a huge hit in Leeds!

New Guildford store Our newest store opened in January and marked the 43rd store in the Evans chain. With a brand new design and loads of bikes on display we are really proud of it! Pop in and check it out if you are in the Guildford area, its just off the A3 and A25 junction. www.evanscycles.com/ stores/guildford

My local Evans Store manager at Holborn, Leon Haywood, has been with Evans Cycles for a few years now. An avid cyclist, here’s what gets him going. “I commute 8 miles each way to work rain, hail or shine on my Fuji Team pro, that beats any cup of coffee! I’ve always loved bikes and when not in the store you can find me out on the road bike exploring Kent and the Surrey Hills with a bunch of like minded cycling nuts.”

London central workshop Remember we have a dedicated workshop in Central London who can service your bike overnight and get it back in time for that weekend ride!

Spring 2011 | Ride it!

SATURDAYS ARE FOR: MUD WORSHIPERS WITH MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES Off-road short route At 10-12 miles the Short route is designed for those that are new to mountain biking or want to build up their fitness – perfect for beginners or family groups. The route involves some challenging terrain and should usually take no more than 2 hours. Off-road medium route At 25-30 miles this is our most popular route. Night Rides* Experience the exhilaration of off-road night riding! Starting after our usual daylight rides, riders set off on the short route in the dwindling light of dusk and are soon plunging into darkness as they enter the woods.
