Editor’s Letter BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE I want to say that I hope you are all well and dealing with this deeply challenging moment as best you can. We are days away from the election of our 46th President. The year 2020 has been one of a destructive nature. We have excepted that Kobe is gone, fashion has changed to what I believe is “not the direction I would like”. The country has been on Covid 19 lockdown for months and we are all ready to change that. Please pray that we make a bring our United States of

choice that will America closer.

In this issue, we first focus on health with The Evanston Health Collective. They are a group of ladies whom we fondly call “The Charles Angels” of Evanston Health. Please take the time to enjoy our Evanston Health Collective. Second, we launch our series called “Professor you should know”, We feature Dr. Justine Notestein who heads a department that will keep us safe from the chemicals that surround us. He teaches us the importance of catalytic processes. One of our favorite departments- Open Tag features a cigar I know you will enjoy exploring. The Open Tab presents Liga Privada Undercrown Maduro (Pg 2) A reasonably priced pleasure that aromatically burns to full ash. A cigar that reminds us that the wealthy “have things” we may not get to experience. A cigar like this will make times easier while you deal with the adjustments Covid-19 surrounds us with. Finally in the Cover Story, we introduce the General Manager of Autobarn to our readers. Sam Mustafa, a man you need to go and experience. He is like meeting Jordan Belfort in his prime. A smart salesperson who will save you money and time. Also, an incredibly informed Nissan aficionado is what you will learn Sam Mustafa is, so read and contact him. Please enjoy the magazine and let us know of any story ideas you may have,

his cigar, released in 2011, came about because the torcedores at the Drew Estate factory were smoking so many Liga Privadas that the company was having trouble keeping

The Undercrown has dark brooding syrup and cocoa powder notes. The wrapper tastes of hints of cognac or rum. The ’09 Verite was more earthy, savory, smooth, and delicately balanced. The Undercrown uses a Connecticut-grown stalk-cut Habano leaf (the same one used in Liga Privada T52) for its binder, and the filler is a blend of Brazilian Mata Fina and Cuban-seed Nicaraguan tobaccos. The result, as you could well imagine, is outstanding. Undercrown is chocolaty, earthy, creamy, and peppery with some of the richest tobacco flavors you can find. The construction is on par with any Drew Estate cigar, and ensures an easy draw and razor-straight burn from start to finish.

Lynfred Winery Is A Great Place To Relax And Sip Some Delicious Wine!

E

nvision Your Perfect Day in Napa Valley now realize that you can have that exact experience in Roselle Illinois.

If you have never been to Lynfred Winery then you better get in your car and drive out there. A visit to this winery is like being in a 5-star bed and breakfast or a resort in the Napa Valley. Lynfred Winery’s existence starts with a selection of award-winning wines. How can a winery in Roselle, Illinois, make national award-winning wines? “You start by coming from generations of people who have made wine. Here, and in Germany. Care and concern, of course, make a difference,” Fred Koehler said. “Making wine at home is truly a Koehler tradition… dating back to the 17th century,” he continued when interviewed by the Chicago Tribune The history, in brief, belongs to the legacy of Fred and Lynn Koehler, founders of the eponymous Lynfred Winery. Fred was a business-savvy man who aspired to produce wines of excellence. Coupled with Fred’s practicality, Lynn’s ideas and visionary nature brought the Koehlers to the realization – once their cellar was full of wine – that they might open “a little winery.” According to the website lynfredwinery.com, their little hobby grew to an amazing proportion. Thus the name of the company is a combination of the husband and wifes’ names. This winery reflects an old-world charm with a welcoming upper crust touch. Choose from three exciting experiences, and plan your perfect visit to our paradise. AUTOBARNS

General Manager

T

SAM MUSTAFA

he figure on the cover of the magazine this month is the General Manager of the Nissan wing of Autobarn Evanston. His name is Sam and he is from the middle east. He is a figure right out of the movie Glen Gary Glen Ross or Boiler Room a polished sales executive. He is a sharp and intellectual sales manager who knows his stuff.

With over 250+ Nissan’s In-Stock and lease Specials Available from over three local campuses Nissan Autobarn and Sam Mustafa can be the place for you to receive the level of customer service you wish to receive. In Business Over 20+ Years. Sam is proud to tell anyone that Autobarn Evanston is the best in the nation and the only dealership in Evanston. When you drive down Chicago Ave and enter the city of Evanston you get a real feel for the city. The city is ironically connected to a historic effort toward prosperity by all people. It’s the allegorical 6

entrance to the north shore, which also has a giant history of prosperity. Driving down Chicago Avenue and seeing Mr. Fisher’s Autobarn (which includes the showroom where Sam Mustafa is the boss) is the core of that area’s iconic image. Evanston has a reputation for being a place where a Salesman like Sam Mustafa can flourish. It seems he does that by his in-depth knowledge of the products on his sales floor. The

floor.

The Nissan logo received a face lift this season. The new logo is still a circle intersected by the name Nissan in capital letters, but the name is more freestanding now, with less of a physical connection to the circle that it intersects. The circle is incomplete in the new logo, with a small gap where the Nissan name bisects it, while the old logo’s outer ring was a solid circle. Another noticeable change is in the spacing of the lettering. The logo is less three

dimensional and sleek in its two-dimensional layout. It’s now a reflection of how technologically advanced the brand is. To see an example of the new logo tinyurl.com/nissanlogo Sam leads the conversation, stating that in 2020 everything Nissan is getting a facelift. The main three models that the factories are releasing firstAltima, Sentra, and Versa.

)

. The Altima is a game-changer it is stunning from the basic model to the luxury fully loaded model. The basic model comes with the latest and greatest tech and safety features that some of the other brands’ competitors cannot contend with. For example, not all brands put “state of the art” emergency braking in their base model. Even more remarkable is that the Altima comes in all-wheel drive. Now that is something we north shore Illinoisans need. There will be no more uncertainty about your car slipping in those icy streets of Chicago during our winters. The best part is the all-wheel-drive Altima’s price is below the Camry and accord. This attribute is rarely seen outside of the Mercedes 5 series. The Altima is a great value. For confirmation of how excellent the new Nissan Altima is just look at the long list of highly touted written reviews. Motor Trend Car and Driver is one of those magazines. Sam states, “all of the reviews out there right now, show you how excellent the Nissan line is”. I must agree, in fact, Nissan is blowing away the competition in the advancement of tech introduced into the market. The 2020 Rogue, will be released with direct drive steering, blind-spot monitors, surroundview camera monitoring, advanced cruise control.

Keeping Shoppers Safe

Sam Mustafa is handling the managerial responsibility of dealing with Covid-19 . Nissan has done some big things in their 2020 adjustments to handle the Covid-19 virus. Sam Mustafa defers to the agenda of the owner of the Autobarn Richard Fisher. Mr. Fisher has set up a protocol to affirm the staff’s mindset to take this seriously. He has given the staff orders to adjust standards of all cleanliness, so the customers would be able to come to the showroom and feel safe from the virus while shopping. Those protocols include a higher quality of viral defense when test driving vehicles. This includes entering a clean virus free car.

EVANSTON HAS ITS OWN NBA STAR

G

AARON WILLIAMS

rowing up in Evanston was fun, challenging and a lot different than it is today. For me going outside to play basketball, football, baseball and riding bikes with my friends was an everyday thing, depending on the season and the weather. My first taste of “competitive” sports came on the playgrounds growing up in Evanston. we would go at it on the basketball court and playing tackle football at the park.

Malone, Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley etc. Not to mention getting to play alongside Hall of Faimers Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, and Mitch Richmond. Although Jordan is the best player I’ve ever seen or played against, the toughest by far and the biggest challenge I’ve ever had on the court was guarding 7’1” 325 pound Shaquille O’Neal aka Shaq! He’s the most dominant center to ever play and I experienced it first hand.

When I was in 7th grade we moved to Mount Prospect and I ended up attending Rolling Meadows HS. One of the highlights of my HS basketball career was getting to play against Evanston and guys that I knew my senior year and beating them. I had a nice reverse dunk that game.

When my playing days were over I struggled for a while to find a job that I was as passionate about as basketball. I wanted to go into coaching but I didn’t want to live in a different city than my kids so I put that off. Since I’d always been interested in real estate, I ended up starting a real estate brokerage with a partner of mine. Starting your own business is never easy but we’ve been doing ok and I’ve also branched off into real estate investing as well. In the future, when my kids, daughters Danyelle 20, Cameron 17 and son Aaron 15 are all in college and out of the house, I’d like to revisit coaching, I feel I have a wealth of knowledge to pass on to the younger generation. I had a good run and I look forward to watching my kids play volleyball and basketball and whatever else the future may hold.

The best team and player around that time was King HS and Jamie Brandon who went on to play at LSU. We played them in a holiday tourney and had them beat the whole game until the end, somehow they found a way to beat us. Most of the kids who were the best when I was growing up never made it, I did. Anything is possible with the right attitude and work ethic. It also helps that I’m 6’9”. I wasn’t drafted in the NBA, I played in Italy, Greece and the CBA (G-League today) before I finally was able to make a team. Once I made it I never looked back, playing 14 years in the NBA. Not being drafted definitely makes you appreciate the NBA more and you don’t take anything for granted. I was in awe playing against players I idolized growing up Like Michael Jordan, Karl 8

Lets hope Covid-19 is conquered so next year the Finals/ Championship wont have an asterisk next to it. Then we can get back to watching the NBA.

vanston has a team of women who Evanston Magazine compares to the Women of Television fame named Charlie’s Angels. Charlie’s Angels is a team of highly talented detectives. Evanston’s Angles are not detectives but they are health providers a group of experienced practitioners who combined their individual practices to provide an integrative clinic to complement traditional medical care.

As a health care collective, these three women offer patients and clients a comprehensive team approach to meet their unique health issues. Just like in the television show each woman has a specialty.

Sarah B. McLaughlin LMT (The Massage Therapist) Sarah’s practice is grounded in her belief that you have the inner ability to heal yourself, given the right combination of external support and stimulation of your own inner resources. The main focus of shiatsu is moving energy not necessarily muscle tissue and there’s less focus on the lifting and needing of muscle tissue and more focus on balancing emotional physical and energetic complaints. Sarah’s practice has an additional focus on resolving or balancing those things like sleep for depression. She is able to work with patients to deal with depression through massage techniques. Melanie Katin , DACM, L.Ac The Acupuncturist Melanie is the Angel in charge of acupuncture needles. Most people only experience acupuncture on television. Melanie is a specialist who’s touch can relieve all anxiety. When you book an appointment with her through her website bebetteracupuncture.com your therapy will start by discussing your overall state of health. She investigates blood pressure by taking customers’ temperature and recording their pulse and oxygen levels. This is part of her method to keep her patients at ease. Then Melanie Katin will analyze your situation to determine if there’s a need for an implementation of her technique using Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine is very different from Western medicine so she will integrate techniques that might seem mystical and foreign. Some needlework is used but also there are a number of instruments that can ease your pain. “The patient’s body system has become unwell for a variety of reasons”, explains Melanie. Circumstances that affect patients could be lifestyle, genetics, or could be toxic exposure. Her procedure is comfortable, especially for newer clients. She will have every patient lie down on the table and receive a diagnosis process for Chinese medicine. She describes acupuncture as a series of subway train lines on the body. These energy subways lines start one place and they end up in another place. Through placing the needles you interrupt the energy lines and redirect the energy. Also integrated is herbal medicine. The herbal treatments that a patient might receive are of Chinese herbal medicine.

Becky Paulin-Liston, PT, RYT The Physical and Yoga Therapist Becky is the yoga instructor in the group. Her website is ptandy.com. Becky understands the healing power of touch and employs a gentle handson approach to physical therapy, and hands-on adjustments during yoga. Becky Paulin- Liston believes that every body tells a story. She always felt like her calling was to help people and it shows in her work efforts. When people reach out to Becky for her services they’ll be evaluated to know they can do the yoga or physical therapy based exercises. She is very careful to make every client can feel they will master the techniques as quickly as they signed up for the class. Her post-covid-19 procedures have integrated virtual as well as physical processes through zoom style classes. She is very interested in 1 on 1 class in fact you may want to visit her website and contact her about her on-line schedule. Becky understands the healing power of touch and employs a gentle hands on approach to physical therapy, and hands on adjustments during yoga.

PROFESSOR YOU SHOULD KNOW

JUSTIN M.

NOTESTEIN

Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering

If you have ever drank out of a plastic bottle you wanna thank one of the professors in Dr. Justin Notestein’s profession. They are the Chemists who make sure plastics and other things like that don’t cause you issues. Dr. Notestein grew up in Texas and did his undergraduate work in New Jersey. He obtained his PhD at University of California, Berkeley, CA. When making the choice to find a school to teach in Dr. Notestein professes that his decision to choose Northwestern was based on the fact that in his particular research area Northwestern has actually been a world leader since 1930s. This Center that he is now the director of, has its origins way back then. The main work of the school was led by Vladimir N Ipatieff, (1857-1952.). Dr. Ipatieffs groundbreaking work in this area was so attractive that the Chemistry department owes a lot to Professor Ipatieff. If we consider for example, water. Water is one of the major resources needed for human existence. preserving water is essential as it is a finite resource. Scientists like Dr. Notestein maintain the safety of water. Water pollution is when certain chemical processes invade the water and chemicals are introduced into the water system making it toxic and /or dangerous. For example, chromium salts are tracked very very closely in the waters of Lake Michigan,.Unfortunately some very important process have used chromium leaving a dangerous level in the natural environment. Dr Notestein and his team/ school create chemical processes to dilute or change the chemical in a way that may turn it into another chemical. This is explained as a safer and more cost efficient system than trying to clean it in older less current process. As Evanston Magazines first “professor you should know” Dr. Notestein is a great representative of the higher quality of the kind of professor that Northwestern attracts.
