PROFESSOR YOU SHOULD KNOW

JUSTIN M.

NOTESTEIN

Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering

If you have ever drank out of a plastic bottle you wanna thank one of the professors in Dr. Justin Notestein’s profession. They are the Chemists who make sure plastics and other things like that don’t cause you issues. Dr. Notestein grew up in Texas and did his undergraduate work in New Jersey. He obtained his PhD at University of California, Berkeley, CA. When making the choice to find a school to teach in Dr. Notestein professes that his decision to choose Northwestern was based on the fact that in his particular research area Northwestern has actually been a world leader since 1930s. This Center that he is now the director of, has its origins way back then. The main work of the school was led by Vladimir N Ipatieff, (1857-1952.). Dr. Ipatieffs groundbreaking work in this area was so attractive that the Chemistry department owes a lot to Professor Ipatieff. If we consider for example, water. Water is one of the major resources needed for human existence. preserving water is essential as it is a finite resource. Scientists like Dr. Notestein maintain the safety of water. Water pollution is when certain chemical processes invade the water and chemicals are introduced into the water system making it toxic and /or dangerous. For example, chromium salts are tracked very very closely in the waters of Lake Michigan,.Unfortunately some very important process have used chromium leaving a dangerous level in the natural environment. Dr Notestein and his team/ school create chemical processes to dilute or change the chemical in a way that may turn it into another chemical. This is explained as a safer and more cost efficient system than trying to clean it in older less current process. As Evanston Magazines first “professor you should know” Dr. Notestein is a great representative of the higher quality of the kind of professor that Northwestern attracts.
