AIRLESS VS. HVLP

Airless or HVLP

WHEN TO CHOOSE WHICH SPRAYER? Whether you want to spray a radiator, a door, a wall or indeed, a complete house, the correct paint sprayer is essential for a consistent and professional finish. But when should you use an airless sprayer and when is it best to use an HVLP unit? We pit them against each other.

B

oth an airless and an HVLP sprayer allow you to apply paint flawlessly. They make for a smoother, more attractive finish compared to traditional painting methods. Yet, in certain situations, it is better to use an airless rather than an HVLP sprayer, and vice versa. On the basis of three relevant factors, we explain the difference.

FACTOR 1 The kind of paint job

FACTOR 2 The material sprayed

FACTOR 3 Control of the spraying

Airless sprayers can spray litres of paint in just minutes. They are, therefore, better suited for jobs where speed is more important than detail. They are mainly used by professional contractors for large paint jobs, such as walls, facades or indeed, entire buildings. Unlike their airless counterpart, HVLP sprayers atomize less paint. Therefore, they are better suited for more detailed and finer painting. Radiators, furniture or doors spring to mind.

The type of materials that you spray is crucial in the choice between airless or HVLP. Airless sprayers can spray virtually all materials, ranging from thin varnishes, stains, lacquers right through to thick ceiling and wall paints. Due to high pressure, the majority of paints do not even have to be diluted. HVLP sprayers, however, can only handle thin materials, like varnishes, stains, lacquers and diluted paints. So for undiluted thick materials, you always need an airless sprayer.

For projects that require a superior level of finish – such as retouching and repairs – HVLP sprayers are better suited, because their paint spraying is much more precise. With airless sprayers, atomization is not as controllable. Moreover, they require slightly more preparation, because the surface and adjacent areas must be taped.

Airless Air-Assisted: where airless and HVLP meet In an HVLP sprayer (High Volume Low Pressure), paint is atomized by air. The pressure of that air is below 1 bar – the volume and velocity of air for atomization. Airless paint sprayers work without air (hence “airless”). They atomize the material by the very high pressure (130-230 bar) developed to squeeze

through a nozzle. You can also choose Airless Air-Assisted (AAA) sprayers. Then both techniques are combined in the same sprayer. In terms of pressure and level of finish, AAA sprayers are somewhere between airless and HVLP sprayers.

05

AIRLESS

VS

HVLP

Airless and HVLP sprayers are complementary to each other. The choice of one in favour of the other depends on your paint job. If you want to spray large areas quickly and efficiently, then opt for airless. If, on the other hand, you have a paint job where finish prevails, then HVLP is the sprayer you are looking for.

Faster thanks to high pressure For thin and thick materials, no dilution required (varnishes, stains, lacquers and emulsions) Especially suited for big jobs (such as walls or facades) Spray paint in one opaque layer

More detailed thanks to low pressure Mainly for thin materials (varnishes, stains and lacquers) Suitable for finer paintwork (such as radiators, doors, garages, shutters) Multiple layers needed

What is the professionals’ verdict? On the following pages, we present our latest Fine Finish sprayers and give the floor to professional painters/decorators. They explain why and when they use their airless or HVLP sprayers.

NEW IN PAINTS

ZOOMING IN ON GRACO’S ‘FINE FINISH’ IMPROVEMENTS The nature of your paint jobs can differ considerably. Big or small, indoors or outdoors, lacquer or emulsion, you expect a flawless result each time. At Graco, therefore, we constantly consider how we can extend our range, improve and innovate.

THE NEW GX FF TM

The GX FF is our latest, extremely affordable ‘Fine Finish’ sprayer. This airless sprayer is much lighter than all competing systems and is perfect for finishing surfaces that require a very precise finish, such as wood and metal. If you are looking for unmatched quality at an unbeatable price, then look no further.

The 5.7 litre hopper is ideal for spraying small areas. In combination with the thin, short hose (3/16” x 7.5 m) you can spray anything from 1 litre of paint. The ProX Power piston pump is an extremely durable piston pump. Thanks to the ProXChange -system, you can easily replace the pump yourself. TM

TM

The RAC X Fine Finish Switch Tip with dual atomization provides a softer spray pattern so you can better check the layer thickness in overlaps. The contoured handle of the FTx spray gun ensures optimum control and maximum comfort when spraying. TM

are just second to none!” So the latest acquisition did not disappoint. “I bought the GX FF for a fairly large job where I was asked to apply a coat of lacquer on old doors. It felt like I was working 100 times faster. The end result was excellent, and the client was very pleased indeed!”

NEW

THE RENEWED HVLP SERIES

Our HVLP sprayers were designed with one goal in mind: to make paint spraying easy. “Plug & Spray” is what we call it: just fill up the material cup, switch on the unit and start! This new generation of HVLP sprayer obviously remains perfect for a fine finish. If anything, the equipment is even more efficient, lighter and quieter.

The Edge II gun ®

Thanks to the Flex Liner Bag-systeem, you can spray paint 360°, so even upside down. TM

Thanks to the EasyGlide technology, you require 75% less power than with other guns. TM

The new Edge II gun sprays 4 times as much material.

The new TurboForce II-turbine TM

The new TurboForce II-turbine is not only 30% more efficient, it is also 15% quieter. The ‘Tough Box’-design protects the turbine better during the job and transport. Thanks to the Smart Start technology of the ProContractor series, the turbine automatically shuts off when you stop spraying.

The Super-Flex hose TM

The Super-Flex hose of 6 m (Standard series) or 9 m (ProContractor series) is 20% lighter than hoses from other brands. It is easy to connect them to the gun, without any fittings.

The result was simply stunning. DAVID DEAN, OWNER OF DAVID DEAN DECORATING

W

ith more than 34 years of experience under his belt and his own painting company, David Dean has little to learn when it comes to painting. Even paint spraying holds no secrets for him anymore after ten years. For a new house, David was asked

to coat 16 oak doors with two layers of varnish. The contractor decided to have the doors painted on site; as they were cheaper to buy untreated. “A perfect job for my HVLP”, David said: “In one hour and twenty minutes, I was ready – with a roller and brush, that would have taken me eight hours. And the result ... was just stunning.”

FINISHPRO II: TWO SPRAYERS IN ONE TM

Although the FinishPro II is not new, we would still like to put it in the spotlight. After all, the FinishPro II offers the best of both worlds: You can use the sprayer air-assisted, but also airless. Which spray mode you choose depends on your paint job. You can use the FinishPro II for spraying both light and heavy material, directly from the bucket with minimal overspray. This makes the sprayer suitable for both residential and commercial projects.

Ergonomic benefit

“After ten years of painting in the traditional way, it was just time to switch to spray painting”, Wim began his story. “To finish projects faster, and also for health reasons.” He chose the FinishPro 595 PC PRO with roller.

Wim also made headway ergonomically speaking: “Due to using a manual roller, my arm had been in pain for a while. I even wondered how long I would still be able to carry on. But with the FinishPro 595, those problems are now a thing of the past. The manpower which traditional rollers require is now being taken over by the machine.”

THE NEW RAC X FF LP TIPS TM

For a clean finish, you not only need the right equipment, the spray tip is essential. “Despite their importance, painters still buy their tips too often based on the price. That

means that many tips being used are of a lesser quality. With our new RAC X FF LP Tips, we are now launching tips which we think painters will find the extra benefits difficult to ignore.

They are available for the smallest handsets to the largest airless sprayers,” says Global Marketing Manager Accessories Mark Andersen.

What makes the RAC X FF LP Tips so special? “The new RAC X FF LP Tips offer the same basic benefits as the ‘old’ (green) FFA RAC X tips,” says Mark. “The big difference is that with the new RAC X FF LP Tips, you use 30 to 50% less pressure. And spraying with lower pressure provides additional benefits.”

Better finish

Increased reliability

“The paint is sprayed more evenly, without getting stripes on the side of the spray fan. You have more control over the thickness and can avoid ‘runners’ more easily.”

“The RAC X FF LP Tips allow you to spray all materials, the result will always be elegant. They are also much more efficient in cold temperatures.”

Less overspray

Longer life

“The softer, better-managed spray fan also ensures that you have less overspray. So it prevents you from using too much paint.”

“Less pressure also means less pressure on the sprayer. Your pump and spray tip wear out less quickly, so you can use them longer.”

T

here is testing and testing. When Simone Adams had the chance to try out the UltraMax Airless HandHeld DC, she took her job more than seriously. “I didn’t just take the UltraMax Airless HandHeld DC to one of our sites,” Simone started her story. “I first explored the sprayer’s possibilities at our workshop. I tested it with some paints and quickly saw its potential.” She subsequently used the UltraMax on the job. “A new building, where both the windows and walls needed painting.”

Convenient pressure control The pressure control particularly jumped out at me. Simone: “Depending on the application and the space in which you have to paint, you can adjust the pressure. The larger the space, the higher you can set the pressure. A small storage room, for example, I sprayed on a setting of 2-3, the windows on 5-6 and the walls on setting 8-10. Whatever the setting, the UltraMax always delivers enough power. That pressure control is a huge asset.”

Especially for smaller jobs For big jobs, Simone will continue to use other sprayers. “But for

repairs and smaller jobs, such as windows and some interior walls, it really is the perfect sprayer. It’s a handset, so I think you get the most out of it if you take the battery version. Then you can really work in complete freedom. Moreover, the unit is very easy to clean,” she concludes.

NEW IN STRIPING

FROM NOW ON FUME-FREE LINE STRIPING The LineLazer series already met your needs adequately before. That does not mean that we have rested on our laurels. We want to improve not only your end result, but also the actual experience of doing the job. That is why we have launched the LineLazer ES 1000, an innovation within the line-striping equipment. TM

THE NEW LINELAZER ES 1000 The LineLazer ES 1000 is a powerful innovative line marker, our first line marker based on battery technology. This is not only better for the environment, it also gives you yet other – unique – benefits.

Fume-free striping The traditional combustion engine has been replaced by batteries. So no more fumes. You can also use the LineLazer ES 1000 in environments where previously, the work had to be done manually or, worse, you had to turn it down, for example, due to the risk of contaminating the goods.

No sound of a combustion engine A combustion engine used indoors can make for unwanted noise (and its reverberation). With the LineLazer ES 1000, the work can be done in almost complete silence. It makes for a more enjoyable work environment for you and those around you.

Options to extend

Cleaner lining

Depending on the requirements of the workplace, you can expand your LineLazer ES 1000:

If you draw stripes electrically, it means that there is no combustion engine that can cause vibrations. And no vibrations, in turn, mean cleaner lines. The LineLazer ES 1000 guarantees a flawless finish.

• A lazer pointer to follow preliminary marks and apply even cleaner lines • A glass bead system to apply lines and glass beads at night • A LineDriver to apply lines outdoors over long distances tirelessly • A second battery to increase your litre capacity per day or to connect a safety lamp TM

One unit for inside and out Since the LineLazer ES 1000 makes no noise, you can use it both indoors and outdoors, day and night. You want to do linestriping in an underground garage or a logistics centre during the day and apply lines along roads in a village at night? You can do it all with the same unit, without hindering your direct and indirect environment.

15

Tested… and approved! “The perfect solution for our shops and depots”

“With the LineLazer ES 1000, we found the perfect solution for applying lines in our stores and depots. The fact that the machine is not powered by an internal combustion engine, but a battery, offers many advantages. There are no health or safety risks, the

equipment is easy to operate and makes no noise. And because it doesn’t vibrate, the result is even better.” James Murphy, Maintenance Manager at Tesco Reading

Painting more quickly with the JetRoller

TM

EFFICIENCY AT LONELY HEIGHTS ‘Always looking to improve’, is no empty promise at Pijl Vastgoedonderhoud. “Every new project we take on, we examine how we can arrive at the best result in the most efficient way possible”, says manager Maarten Timmermans. “Especially with a contract like this one in Rotterdam, this is crucial.”

W

hat began almost a century ago as a small painting company, has grown into an all-encompassing maintenance company. “We tackle all possible facade works,” says Maarten Timmermans, Managing Director at Arrow Property Maintenance. “From small to large, from painting only to complete renovation. We particularly like projects in which we’re involved from day one.

Sitting together with the client, brainstorming together, creating concepts ... that’s when we are at our best!”

Remain within the agreed budget Also for this Rotterdam project, the brainstorming stage proved invaluable. Maarten: “Since it was a tender-based project, we had to be able to complete it within the agreed budget. Unforeseen

additional work would have been at our expense, for sure. Working efficiently was, therefore, an absolute must.” To deliver a flawless result within budget, Pijl Vastgoedonderhoud relied on Graco. Maarten: “We have a Mark VII and an UltraMax 1095, but we mainly use them for private villa construction work and for interior projects. It was the first time we tackled an outside project of this scale with our Mark VII.”

JetRollers to save time and increase efficiency When Maarten asked Graco for advice, it was suggested we work with two 18 cm JetRollers. “With the Graco pump and JetRollers, we can spray and roll in a single movement, and save a lot of time

that way! That’s how we were able to paint a facade in less than a day. If you’d use a manual roller for the same job, it would take about three days. Also, the display shows how many litres of paint have been used. So we can prove to the client that we’re using enough paint.”

Less strain on the staff Besides the price, it was also ease-of-use that was the deciding factor for choosing Graco. “It’s true, another advantage is that my staff are less stressed,” says Maarten. “They don’t have to lug paint buckets upstairs. This doesn’t only save time, it also makes the work easier. And the equipment is incredibly easy to clean.” n
