takeholder Engagement Programmes within corporations have been gaining prominence and investments, steadily, for the last 10 years. This was bound to be the case, with the economy and industries in India, for most part, in the developmental phase. What’s encouraging now is the active interest and importance this function is gaining within the corporations. While deal breaking, and value-for-money propositions have and will always be the predominant style of conducting business within a corporation, seeking solutions to actively elevate engagement programmes, is what’s boosting the MICE industry of India, as we know it today. The MICE Industry of India is a by-product of corporate stakeholder engagement, and while the latter is in the developmental stage, for very long, the MICE industry only grew because of increased numbers of programmes. Today however, stakeholders of the industry really find new potential for innovation, because there is finally room for evolution, even at the price of greater client involvement. While some fret that clients are over-involving, and sometime on a trip to take away the advantage the agency has with their international networks, others are focusing only on the opportunity. The opportunity to not only build access to service providers and facilitators of MICE programmes, but to study the brand’s strategy and deliver solutions while having the whole world’s MICE facilities at one’s disposal for the programmes ultimate success. karishma@eventfaqs.com

Mumbai Witnesses Cirque Du Soleil BAZZAR’s Indian Debut Cirque Du Soleil a Bazzar full of high energy and excitement has started to gain limelight in Mumbai. Mumbai witnessed Cirque at the MMRD Grounds, BKC from November 15, 2018 and went on till December 9, 2018; brought to India by BookMyShow. Cirque du Soleil BAZZAR, is an eclectic lab of infinite creativity where a joyful troupe of acrobats, dancers, and musicians craft an awe-inspiring spectacle. Lead by their maestro, they came together to invent a one-of-a-kind whimsical universe. In a place where the unexpected is expected, the colourful group put together vibrant scenes in an artistic and acrobatic game. Cirque du Soleil unfolded the World Premiere of its newest show ‘BAZZAR’ in the iconic Big Top tent at MMRDA Grounds. The high-energy excitement, collision of sounds and colours, and meeting place of diverse characters one would find at a traditional ‘bazaar’, inspired the name of the show. BAZZAR perfectly captures the spirit! The spelling is slightly different, where the double ‘zz’ represents the time loop you sense during the adventure. Right post the entry, was the food and beverage area with Absolut as the key sponsor. The decor for the area was also quirky with lighting all over and props placed around. There were tons of photo opportunities created bearing the excitement and the enthusiasm of the crowd in mind. Staying true to the theme of a “circus”, the props were chosen in a way that they let the audience explore its more fun and experimental side. The show opened with a bang and while most of it did involve a lot of elements from Cirque du Soleil’s international performances, the one element that stood out in India was the Malakhamb Act. The act was curated specifically for Bazzar’s Indian audience. Some other spellbinding acts included - Aerial Tricks, Fire Tricks, Skate Dancers, and many more. This unmissable lifetime opportunity came to Mumbai for the first time after entertaining over 190 million people over 450 cities across the globe.

Serendipity Arts Festival A Conversation on Bringing Indian Arts together, with Smriti Rajgarhia Serendipity Arts Festival 2018 India’s first multi-disciplinary arts event was held in Goa at the end of last year and celebrated over ninety projects across seven disciplines, with over fifteen-hundred participating artists while highlighting India’s rich traditions of music, dance and theatre, alongside culinary arts, craft, and visual arts exhibitions. The event was organised by Serendipity Arts Foundation a non-profit organisation with a vision of energising arts production, awareness and practice across South Asia. A collaborative platform for arts, the organisation aims to create new sustainable environments for the arts that engender change across the country’s cultural spectrum. In a conversation with Smriti Rajgarhia, Director, Serendipity Arts Foundation, ExM Magazine takes a look at what makes this festival a first of a kind cultural extravaganza in India. With what objectives was the Serendipity Festival set-up? How can Serendipity Festival act like as a cultural catalyst across the country? The Serendipity Arts Foundation was established in 2014 by Sunil Kant Munjal as a not-for-profit organisation with a vision of energising arts production, awareness and practice across South Asia. The Foundation’s primary outreach for the Serendipity Arts Festival, which started in the year 2016, is now in its third edition and aims to transform not just Goa, but the arts across the country. This year we showcased over 90 dynamic projects, celebrating the diversity of the creative disciplines, encouraging dialogue between the disciplines and honouring the country’s rich heritage of visual and performing arts. Our goal is to foster cultural growth and energise contemporary arts practice with innovative, accessible programming and community focused projects that are inclusive which engage new audience demographics across the country. There are many cultural events happening in the country, how do you position Serendipity as the leading multidisciplinary festival in India? Serendipity Arts Festival sets itself apart from other arts festivals in the country as the only arts event which unites the creative disciplines, showcasing performance and performing arts alongside, visual, and culinary practices. Conceived as a long-term platform creating tangible change across the country’s cultural landscape, we aim to make the arts inclusive, educational and accessible whilst maintaining rigour and depth. This year’s varied international participation has also demonstrated that Serendipity is also a catalyst for cross-cultural exchange, fostering global dialogue and erasing regional divisions in the country.

46

JANUARY–MARCH 2019 EXPERIENTIAL MARKETING

Smriti Rajgarhia, Director - Serendipity Arts Foundation How are you ensuring a sustained growth for the platform? Are you adding any new activities with every coming edition to add more to the festival? Every year we increase in scope and scale. This year we worked with over 1500 artists and an eminent curatorial panel, our audiences are growing year by year. The Festival has focused on encouraging interdisciplinary exploration, offering equal opportunities for artists, artisans, indigenous and folk art forms, performers and other creative practitioners. Every edition builds on the success of previous years, advancing in vision, scope and engagement. What are the brand/partnerships with the Festival? What are the activations that the Festival will feature for associated brands? Brands from various sectors with a shared value and vision participate with us, this year we had partners as diverse as Banking and Finance to leading companies like ICICI Lombard General insurance, and Coca Cola etc. Association with the festival gives brands a chance to invest in the soft power of the region. The future of India lies in its intangible cultural heritage. It has been seen that brand association with cultural organizations not only lifts the image of the brand but humanizes the product. For any company, to choose to sponsor the arts is a savvy move seeking to reach higher net-worth, well-educated and passionate individuals across any demographic. It adds the gloss of culture to brands. Cultural collaboration and participation add personality and style to a brand that no amount of lifestyle marketing can achieve. Investing in art is investing in people. It has the power to change perceptions and create long lasting associations for a brand.

As the market for outbound MICE in India is becoming bigger each day, each corporate buyer today has a variety of destinations to choose from for their next MICE programme. However, for any destination to be deemed MICE worthy for an Indian business traveller, there are some pre-established conditions that they need to score well on,” added Marathe.

Destinations Frequented in the Recent Past

Maximum Indian corporates researched, selected Dubai and Bali as one of their MICE destinations last year. Other frequented destinations by the group studied, included different locations in the Middle East (Dubai and Abu Dhabi), South East Asia (Bali, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Malaysia, Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya), Greater Asia (Japan, China) Europe (Paris, Amsterdam, Malta, Prague, Vienna – Switzerland and Italy), United States of America (Las Vegas), Australia/NZ (Melbourne and Sydney).

EXP ER IENT IA L P L A NNER / COVE R STORY

Vilas GV, Manager – Events, Promotions and Communications, Herbalife Nutrition, opined on reasons for exploring newer destinations for MICE programmes, “Through our previous MICE programmes we’ve already covered most of APAC and hence we are eagerly looking to explore Europe and other newer destinations. Las Vegas is an interesting option as not only does it give us a wide variety of engagements to choose from but also it has the necessary inventories that meet our demand. Barcelona is another interesting destination, because of its massive infrastructure, and seems very promising, and the same goes for Seychelles.”

Deciding Factors for MICE Destination Selection

Budgets and value-for money are still top deciding factors for selecting a destination for MICE programmes, the other factors are unique experiences, connectivity, new locations, good infrastructure. Here’s ExM’s round-up of the top 5 Parameters for Selecting a MICE Destination:

1. Budgets and Value-for-Money

Maximum coporates researched opined that the destination must have options that are perceived as value for money. While the budgets assigned to MICE programmes are enhancing, corporate decision-makers are looking for maximum bang on the buck.

2. Connectivity

Sriram Gopalaswamy, Marketing Head – Commercial Segment, Lenovo, said, “In my opinion, easy travel from 5 metro cities of India, ability to offer new ethnic experiences, no tourist-traps, vibrant 24x7 atmosphere, and superior customer experience are the 5 must-haves in any destination that make it favourable for MICE.”

3. Infrastructure and MICE Facilities

Vilas GV, shared, “Infrastructure remains a massive challenge for our outbound programmes and hence, any favourable destination for MICE needs to have a great event venue nearer to or as a part of the hotel. Infrastructure in a MICE worthy destination needs to be simple and not complicated. We need venues with a large inventory and it is because of their absence that our MICE programmes have to happen in smaller groups.”

4. Ease in Visa-Processing

“In my opinion, easy travel from 5 metro cities of India, ability to offer new ethnic experiences, no touristtraps, vibrant 24x7 atmosphere, and superior customer experience are the 5 must-haves in any destination that make it favourable for MICE.” SRIRAM GOPALASWAMY

Marketing Head – Commercial Segment, Lenovo

Speaking on the challenges of planning outbound MICE, Gopalaswamy shared, “What definitely needs to be worked upon is the ‘pre-approval of visas and faster immigration clearances’ for group trips also, the destination management companies should promote more ethnic experiences to add more value to such business travels.”

5. Tourism Authority and Local Supplier Connect

Vilas GV added, “Also, what makes a destination MICE friendly is the support one receives from the tourism board. How they come and support corporate buyers and facilitate the entire MICE programmes makes a huge difference. The main challenge here is that the business travel industry is dominated by a few big giants and there aren’t many players in the market, to begin with. Hence, a lot of times we end up spending more than we should. If more information about DMC’s, creative partners to manage such programmes is readily available that will tremendously help in enhancing the overall experience.”

Putting Smiles Golf Tournament Chooses Girl Child Education

T

– A Conversation with Tushar Maheshwari

ushar Maheshwari, Managing Director, E3 Integrated Pvt. Ltd. talks about how they’re focussed on taking Putting Smiles Golf Tournament and project Nanhi Kali further with an auction. This one-day event brings together CEOs and decision-makers of reputed organisations, to cometogether and support a cause -- making Putting Smiles, a very unique initiative. Excerpts below. Why did you decide to support the Nanhi Kali Project, with Putting Smiles Golf Tournament, this year? Successful education of the girl child has been repeatedly acknowledged as an effective mechanism to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty, social norms, myths and social evils.

Tushar Maheshwari

The project provides academic, material and social support that allows a girl child to access quality education, attend school with dignity and reduces the chances of her dropping out. Why did you choose Golf and not any other sport? Golf as a sport has carved its niche and has speedily gained popularity amongst the crème de la crème, the people who are the real decision makers. In order to support our cause of providing education to our Nation’s foundation – Our Girl child, we would require the contribution of the society leaders. What’s new with the second edition of the Putting Smiles Golf Tournament? After the success of season 1, the programme has reached out to more and more corporates and have gained popularity. This year, we are getting amazing response and we are overwhelmed by the substantial amount of participation and contribution. We are proud to have great event partners for this year as well and the kind of support we are getting from everyone itself makes it a unique initiative in India. One single platform where all the CXO’s & decision makers come together to support a cause, makes Putting Smiles the most unique event of the year. What’s the plan going ahead, for the Putting Smiles Golf Tournament? Our vision for Putting Smiles would always focus on the betterment of the society, so that tomorrow if we pick any cause, we would want all the leaders and decision makers to come forward at this one platform to support our aim of perishing all the evils prevailing in the society. We don’t live in a perfect world, and there’s never going to be a perfect time to give. Thus, the idea of Charity Auction is to give people the sense of participation and contribution for the cause we will be gathering for. The Putting Smiles Charity Auction is the one platform to experience the art of giving while bringing joy to the life of people in need.

T

he “Wedding of the year – Shaadi by Marriott” conceptualized and managed on-ground by Toast Events was glimmering in the city of joy, Kolkata. J W Marriott Kolkata approached us this year, to create a wedding that was the perfect amalgamation of luxury and tradition. While thinking of the wedding of the year in Kolkata we were confident that we had to do something different to enthral guests. We wanted to target the younger generations who believe in merging the culture with their fashion sensibilities. Kolkata is known for its rich culture and is majorly dominated by the Marwaris and the Bengalis. The concept thought upon was a fashion show that would be a combination of a Sangeet and the main wedding function, along with key wedding planners of Kolkata showcasing the latest trends in the industry. A wedding today is incomplete without music - The Sangeet, has become one of the most important and sought-after functions in an Indian wedding and no one does sangeets better than the Marwaris. The music, the grandeur, the choreography, the colour – they truly know how to make the most of the event! And then you have the subtle yet elegant, traditional opulence of the Bengali wedding. A host of meaningful and heart-warming rituals steeped in tradition performed amidst a riot of colourful and immensely creative décor, are a visual treat. Using this as a background, we collaborated with Masaba Gupta to present her first ever bridal wear collection at the Shaadi by Marriott. House of Masaba is an ode to the hustle and bustle of this beautiful union and to the new age bride.

“The task was to develop designs that would match the aesthetics and tonality of Marriott as a brand. We stuck to keeping things elegant, traditional yet grand. Rose Gold is a huge trend at weddings in India these days, so we played strongly on that as the colour palette for the wedding. The arches, the ramp, the invites all had elements of rose gold in them, giving the event a very modern and classy touch.” ABHIJEET SUTAR |

Weaving a euphoria of experiences for the guests, what kept the guests on the edge of their seats was twirling performance seeped into fashion sequence. The first sequence was the start of celebrations, representing the sangeet, the song and choreography all depicted the coming together for the fun night. The dancers grooved on high energy beat of ‘ghoomar’ and ‘pallo latke’. The Bengali dance performance filled the atmosphere with the sound Ullu while the boys danced to dhunuchi dance. Culminating the showcase Rukmini Maitra walked the ramp with refinement. Doing things differently, TOAST chose not to use the main ballroom as the venue for the fashion show. Instead we converted the pre-function area ahead of the ballroom into a completely unique space for the fashion show with a 72 feet long ramp. The set was created blending modern with traditional intricacies, showcasing a grand arch and taking inspiration from the design aesthetics in the hotel. The ballroom was in-fact transformed into a unique wedding display area and was divided in 3 segments haldi, mehendi, cocktail party and the wedding mandap. The theme and the colour pallet were different for every display. It was the team’s endeavour to display the various spaces Marriott has in a unique manner, and to allow every bride to imagine their wedding as creatively as possible at the hotel. Marriott showcased wide range of food and hospitality giving guests a never before experience. It was created with the intent to craft unique, and personalized wedding experiences, that come alive with great food, fabulous 62

venues, exquisite décor and above all, unparalleled service levels. Marriott prides itself in excelling on all the necessary parameters that come together seamlessly in creating that unforgettable wedding experience. Camaraderie, joy, and beauty all combine to make this a function hard to forget!

“Creating a ramp in the pre-function area was a challenge we took up happily as it gave us the opportunity to do something different and surprise guests with a new experience. Its always fun to work on projects and brands that give us creative liberty and allow us to experiment with locations. #ShaadibyMarriott was definitely a special one for us.” YASIN SHAIKH |

Wizcraft Produces 26/11: Stories of Strength

An initiative by The Indian Express, conceived and directed by Feroz Abbas Khan. GUEST ARTICLE BY GITIKKA GANJU DHAR–ANCHOR, MODERATOR, WRITER

N

ot every day does an experiential agency get the opportunity to produce events such as these. Events that mount the spirit of India at present. Not every agency rises to the occasion the way this one did and always does. Team Wizcraft stood by Mumbai and India to produce this very important event - 26/11: Stories of Strength at the Gateway of India, Mumbai on November 26, 2018. I had the privilege of standing in as anchor, as the voice of the event and was also responsible for steering some of the proceedings on stage. The mood was sombre and resolute. Every single element of the event reflected the colour of solidarity, oneness and resolution. Every note that filled the air, every word that was spoken, every movement that spread, every expression that unfurled resonated the spirit of one story. The story of oneness. The story of standing united against the global business of terror. To mark ten years of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, a blot on humanity that can never be erased, The Indian Express hosted the third memorial event remembering those who lost their lives, those who lost their loved ones and those who rendered the ultimate sacrifice in service of the nation. The tribute was genuine, heartfelt and valuable. This event bathed in poetic lighting, mounted on the waterfront at Apollo Bunder area at the end of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Marg in South Mumbai, against the backdrop of the Gateway and the stormy Arabian Sea. It was executed by Wizcraft International and conceived and directed by renowned theatre and film director, the inimitable Feroz Abbas Khan. Creative Technology Deliver’s 9750 sqm of Projection at Qasr Al Hosn Qasr Al Hosn reopens as a museum to the public, Creative Technology Middle East (CTME) delivered 9750 sqm for the historical event.

Q

asr Al Hosn is the oldest, most significant heritage site in Abu Dhabi and the first structure to have been built in the capital after more than 11 years of restoration. The site has now reopened its doors as a museum to the public, showcasing the development from a community reliant on fishing and pearling to the modern Abu Dhabi. Creative Technology Middle East (CTME) were on hand to deliver 9750 sqm of projection for the historical event on behalf of our clients. The Qasr Al Hosn Inauguration was opened by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces on December 5, 2018. The large projection show featured content supplied by Fly Studio, showcasing the UAE’s heritage and the history of Qasr Al Hosn Fort. The content was delivered across three buildings, the Musalla, the Cultural Foundation and the Qasr Al Hosn Fort. The projection covered such a large area of the event that the only way for the audience to follow the full story was from the central revolving grandstand which slowly rotated as the show progressed across the large site.

To ensure system operation was in sync, CTME used Riedel Compact Pro equipment for distribution of sync and timecode to all media servers. Compact Pro units were also used for signal distribution of six robo cameras in place for a rough projector line up. In addition to Riedel units, CTME provided a large number of fibre network switches across the site for the purpose of content sharing, control of the robo cameras and projector control. To achieve the high brightness stipulation CTME provided multiple projector channels in a double and triple stack configuration. Each projector in the configuration received main and redundant signal feed resulting in a total of 180 unique video signal feeds. The event was broadcast live across local television stations and the Qasr Al Hosn YouTube page where thousands of people tuned it to watch the historical event take place. Hughes goes on to say, “Everyone came together to pull off this fantastic event, it was a great success and real pleasure to have been part of it.”

CTME used 34 Panasonic 31K laser projectors and 46 Panasonic 21K Projectors installed into 20 bespoke towers strategically placed to cover all three main aspects of the projection areas. CTME’s Senior Project Manager Dan Hughes states “We use Panasonic projectors due to their reliability, brightness, optics and are a perfect product for the job in hand.” Prior to the event, all three projection areas were laser scanned, and an accurate 3D model was prepared for both content pre-visualisation and creation. The 3D model of 1,200 000 vertices and UV maps were shared between the creative department and CTME for content creation and mapping. CTME used its internal Octopus application to control switching of backup feeds on the matrix. Hughes explains “Octopus is an application created internally by our team within the CT group for the purpose of controlling other pieces of hardware by network commands. It was a great tool to have on hand to manage the failover switch.”

NEW YEAR, NEW GEAR – Protec Reflects on 2018 and Gives Insight into 2019

Protec started 2018 with a big announcement and an even bigger vision for the year ahead. The Protec group expanded to include Protec European Events based in the UK and has extended its global reach to include events this past year as far flung as Rwanda. Also, opening an office and warehouse in Saudi Arabia to offer their clients a service on their doorstep meant a significant growth in resources to avail of the burgeoning events industry there. With this expansion into the UK and Saudi Arabia there have been many highlights. One that springs to mind is the ground-breaking ceremony for Qiddiya, the famous Saudi Arabian giga-project. “2018 has been an incredible year with a wide variety of outstanding events that we were delighted to be a part of. Some moments that stand out are seeing our dart playing robots on a stand at GITEX garnering so much media attention, helping our client unite 400,000 EDM fans at Unite with Tomorrowland, delivering an opening ceremony to remember for the MENA Special Olympics, to watching our client relationships strengthen and our global reach expand with our European branch – it’s all been outstanding. But I think it is the industry awards we received this year recognising all these great achievements like being awarded ‘AV Production, Staging & Rental Company of the Year’ at this year’s long-standing AV Awards ceremony, along with several awards in the Middle East for event technology encourages us to push the boundaries of event technology even further”, said Steve Lakin, Managing Director, Production Technology LLC (Protec).

“I have two words that come to mind when I think of the Protec team, ‘professionalism personified’ – they have creative ideas, technical agility and are flexible even under “show” pressure. We have a great working relationship with them, they understand our business, they know the personalities, and our goals are aligned – we make both our companies successful – now that’s true partnership.” Evelyn Truter - Marketing Programme & Project Manager - Xerox International Operations

Growing Infrastructure & Hiring Talents

Investments in Production Technologies

Strategically located next to the National Exhibition Centre and Birmingham International Airport, they have more than doubled their storage area to 63,000 ft2 (5850 m2). Alongside the new space to store their growing inventory and expanding staging and scenic department, they will be hiring more world class personnel in order to consistently deliver the standard of events the global Protec brand is recognised for.

Protec have made some new investments with a busy 2019 in mind including the GrandMA3 full size and 4 MA3 Light consoles.

“Our goal is to bring people from all walks of life, countries, backgrounds and unite them as one with the power of music. That is exactly what UNITE with Tomorrowland did once again and we are very happy with the feedback. It is with the help of strong partners like Protec that make this concept such a huge success in the UAE.” Barry Pavic, Director, Envie Events. 74

Egor Popovski of MA Lighting Middle East congratulated Protec on pioneering this new technology by saying, “We are very proud to congratulate Protec on being the first to purchase the GrandMA3 consoles in the Middle East and are happy that we can deliver these solutions. This is one more important step in our long-lasting relationship with Protec.” Alongside this, Protec added the impressive Robe RoboSpot follow spot ground control system and 40 of ClayPaky’s latest Axcor 400 Profile fixtures.

In the video department Protec invested in the OmniCal camera system by ‘disguise’ (D3). Scott Walker explained the benefits of this new addition to our disguise range. “The OmniCal system will cut down set-up time and give us more flexibility in 3D mapping. This system will provide us with updated point cloud data that will allow us to adapt our model mesh to match precisely the real-world object which will be great for complex 3D mapping jobs with large quantities of projectors.” HOD of Audio, Ed Ross has said that they have received new LA Rak 2 amp racks to add to their extensive L’Acoustics inventory. He added there is more exciting news on the horizon for Protec’s audio division but is remaining elusive thus far promising very big news in the springtime. He shared, “This new acquisition will be terrific not just for Protec but for all our clients putting on large events in the region.” Alongside their new compact K10 robots, a new addition in the past few months, the ‘Advanced Technology’ department have promised a few exciting surprises in 2019 with some different technology on the event horizon. This technology is expected to be launched in February!

Of course, these new acquisitions and the highly skilled team behind these successful events will be available globally to Protec’s clients in the UK, Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa as they look towards delivering the same consistently world class events beyond all expectations across continents.
