FROM THE EDITOR

48 It surely was a heightened moment of pride to see members of the International Indian Film Academy inaugurate its festivities by ringing in the bell of the Nasdaq stock exchange at Times Square in New York. What better mark of the globalization of Indian cinema? What better memory of IIFA being hosted in New York? What better milestone for an Indian Event IP to achieve? It has been a habit for IIFA, and Wizcraft (organisers of IIFA) to leave its mark in every host destination. What’s commendable is that every effort is usually deep-routed in meaningful development for the Indian Film Industry and for bi-lateral development with the host destination. So while there’s plenty buzz about sensational performers and star-studded events, there’s also genuine growth being achieved, for an industry, and a nation. It’s no wonder then that deliberately, consciously or unconsciously, events like IIFA continue to be an inspiration for the Experiential industry, as well. We see that ourselves, in the buzz and multi-faceted nature of the WOW Awards and Convention Asia. And we’re ever-grateful on being poised to learn from and be inspired by the very best! karishma@eventfaqs.com

It’s Time to Reinvent Brand Sunburn and the Experience It Offers: Karan Singh, Sunburn BY SHANTANU JAIN It wouldn’t be wrong if we said that the last ten years have seen the LIVE Entertainment space in India truly evolve and transform itself into a vivacious and dynamic business opportunity that everyone wants a piece of. Giving credit to where its due, it was media giant Percept’s brainchild ‘Sunburn’ that kickstarted the electronic dance music festival scene in India.

Melbourne has a rich electronic music history and has struck the perfect balance between mass-market festivals and the club culture. Sunburn Reload, Melbourne will feature India’s youngest and Sunburn resident, DJ Shaan apart from Candice Redding, Olly Esse and other homegrown acts at the popular Studio 3, Crown Casino, Melbourne, Australia.

KARAN SINGH CEO Sunburn

Sustaining a new event property is a daunting challenge. However, Percept through its relentless marketing & creative efforts matched with eye rolling investments for 10 years made Sunburn a success story that enjoys unprecedented love and support from EDM fans across the globe.

As Sunburn completed 10 successful years of its running last year in Pune, Percept claims this is only the beginning of bigger and grander things they have in store for the festival audiences. In an exclusive conversation with ExM, Karan Singh- CEO, Sunburn Global shares plans of Sunburn 11, property expansion plans, Sunburn Australia & more. Last year saw Sunburn successfully completing 10 years as the biggest music festival property in India. What can the audiences expect from Sunburn 11? As we enter a new decade of Sunburn, we are going to completely renew the experience for our fans. Sunburn Season 11 will definitely break barriers to double in both size and scale with a host of new assets and formats being introduced therein catering to a wider audience both globally and domestically. We are making some big and exciting changes to the main Sunburn Festival this year, which will be announced in the coming weeks. We have a couple of massive Arena Tours planned across the country with artists who have never toured these cities before. Previously Tier 2 cities were only a part of Sunburn Reload, but now Sunburn Arenas will also be introduced in these Tier 2 markets. We will also be majorly focusing on the digital content for Sunburn 11. Our viewership is targeted to double from 22 million online views to 50 million, with Live streaming extending beyond the main festival to become a key part of the other Sunburn formats. And finally, we are going to be introducing a brand-new format of Sunburn this year which is completely targeted towards the youth of India thereby offering them a more accessible and affordable dance music experience. More detailed information on these formats will be shared very soon – but it promises to be an exciting and a significant season for us. 10

Percept also recently announced that it will be taking Sunburn to Australia. How will this edition be rolled out? We are doing a Sunburn Reload show in Australia, which is our smaller format, and we are taking some of the best Indian artists there. We have dabbled successfully in several international markets in the past few years, including Sri Lanka in 2012, Dubai in 2013, Muscat in 2015 and Kathmandu, Nepal in 2016. That being said, it is still super exciting for us to cross over to Down Under and we will be doing a show there for the first time. It has always been our effort to give our global fans the home grown brand experience through a customized format on their home turf. We have witnessed an increasing interest from Sunburn patrons based in Australia which led us to incept the upcoming Melbourne edition.

During the course of Sunburn Season 11, we do have plans to definitely do shows in Sri Lanka, Dubai, Nepal, and other parts of Asia and the Middle East. What are the plans for expansion as you step into the new decade? We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved in the last decade. The need of the hour now is to reinvent the brand and the experience. That is exactly what we intend to do. We have always focused on the experience of our fans, first and foremost, and we intend to give them an even better, bigger and importantly more varied experience moving forward. There is so much potential in India with so many markets to tap – the possibilities for expansion are endless. We intend to double in magnitude and numbers from 750,000 to reach 1.4 million fans via amplification of engagement and events by targeting more markets across Indi and overseas as also introducing new formats like U21. Sunburn Reload will expand from 25 shows to 50 large format shows across 26 cities. Sunburn Arena will also witness an expansion into 15 markets as it gets introduced into Tier 2 markets this year. International growth will also see the brand extend its geographical footprint into Australia, Dubai, Colombo, Asia and the Middle East. Digital reach is targeted to scale up to hit 50 million views this season with Live Streaming and other innovative Technologies backing our endeavor. The flagship Sunburn Festival will witness inbound traffic from more countries this year as we reach out to more territories via our online partner sites and digital campaigns with an aim to drive greater awareness and ticket sales across more geographies. Beyond this, we are definitely interested in going into some new business lines with Sunburn, which again we plan to do in the next 12-24 months.

he International Hospitality giant Marriott Group conceived the idea of ‘Shaadi by Marriott’ in the year 2016 to thrive on the booming market of the Indian wedding industry. After establishing the vision for the campaign last year, Marriott presented the concept of ‘Shaadi by Marriott’ in Delhi by collaboration with ace designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. Toast Events was roped in by the brand to manage the initiative. The setup of the event was similar to that of a Big Fat Indian wedding. Talking about it Harshad Chavan- MD, Toast Events remarked, “Since we wanted to bring together every element that goes into the making of a Big Fat Indian wedding in a non-obtrusive amazing experience,

THE DAZZLING SPECTACLE THAT WAS ‘SHAADI BY MARRIOTT’ we believed that the venue should take the audiences onto different experiences as they moved from one area to the other. To achieve this, we created an elegant arch with a subtle gold theme married with floral veil and a melange of butterflies, took the guests through a chic bar, integrated fun colourful kitch elephant installations throughout the event venue and upon entry to the main venue, the guests saw them being welcomed by a gadda seating that immediately evoked in them memories of their own weddings.”

What kept the guests on the edge of their seats was the fashion presentation itself. The first sequence was the start of celebrations, representing the cocktail night, the song and choreography all depicted the coming together of two people as an intimate dance performance teamed with garments apt for a Cocktail night adorned the ramp. This was followed by the mehndi sequence, as traditional colored garments drifted through the audiences showcasing, girls doing mehndi on the hands of the groom. Each occasion was presented with a blend of visuals, thematic performances, and garments. Following it up with performance on the sangeet night, dancers and models took the ramp to the tunes of ‘Chalte Chalte’. Culminating the showcase, a brass band led the baraat as baraati’s performed inviting and leading the bride’s path, presenting Sonam Kapoor.

n June 14, two of the most anticipated Ducatis in the world, the Monster 797 and the Multistrada 950 were launched at Qla, New Delhi. More than 100 media persons and bloggers were present to witness the unveiling of Ducati’s magnificent beasts. The event was successfully conceptualised, planned and executed by Brandwidth Events.

DUCATI LAUNCHES MONSTER 797 AND MULTISTRADA 950 IN INDIA AT QLA, DELHI MANAGED BY BRANDWIDTH EVENTS, THE EVENT WAS ATTENDED BY OVER 100 MEDIA PERSONS AND BLOGGERS.

THE VENUE

Keeping in mind Ducati’s requirement of hosting the launch at a unique venue and not a commercial ballroom, Brandwidth researched and suggested a property called Qla, next to Qutub Minar in Delhi. The out-of-the-box venue was perfect, but the major constrain was the way the space was already apportioned.

Our biggest challenge was the fixed event setup at the venue. However, with inch by inch detailed recce and pre-event technical testing, the team managed to bring out the setup to perfection by utilizing every corner of the venue and transforming it into a Ducati Zone. SUHANA SETHI

SETUP AND EVENT FLOW

The setup designs were well thought out, where customised base and stage extensions were created to make the venue space look grand and less cluttered. The Ducati red walls on each side of the entrance blazed through the walkway leading the guests to a gallery which displayed the history of the “Naked Bike” Ducati Monster. At the event, Ravi Avalur, MD, Ducati India with his colleague Sergi Canovas unveiled the “Gateway to Ducati World”Monster 797 & Multistrada 950. A display was also created for the media to get a close up view of the look and feel of these two bikes.

ith Dubai being one of the hottest destinations in the region for incentive trips from around the word, ExM Magazine catches up with TEC to get an idea of what a trip for a large group would look like.

THE QUINTESSENTIAL DUBAI INCENTIVE TRIP TEC recently managed an incentive trip for 500 guests at The Westin Al Habtoor City, packing in experiences that make Dubai one of the most favoured destinations for groups of all sizes.

This recent trip saw TEC manage a conference for 500 guests from around the world, coming together for their annual kick-off, hosted at The Westin Al Habtoor City. This being a 2-day trip with most of the guests coming to Dubai for the first, TEC wanted to provide them an opportunity to experience all the Emirate had to offer in the limited time frame. TEC is experienced in Destination Management trips, and managing groups of different sizes and with a myriad of requirements, taking away any hassle from inbound or outbound incentive teams.

WHY DUBAI?

Dubai is conveniently located and offers visitors state-of-the art facilities together with exotic experiences, a combination that’s in many ways unparalleled. Elaborating on what makes Dubai such a great destination for incentive trips, Natalie Crampton, Managing Director, TEC said, “Dubai’s hospitality sector is one of the busiest in the region, and for good reason. The city offers so much for every type of business traveller, allowing incentive groups to switch from business to fun effortlessly. Not only is Dubai home to world class, state of the art facilities, venues and infrastructure, but it is also conveniently located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, making it easily accessible by land, sea and air for most of the world’s population.”

HOSPITALITY

“Whether groups are looking to stay in the heart of the city or in the middle of the desert, a very corporate setting or a more relaxed environment for their meetings, or structured team activities or more flexible itineraries for their staff, Dubai has great variety of experiences, activities and venues to choose from,” noted Crampton. 36

The Westin Dubai

The Westin Al Habtoor City was selected for both the accommodation and conference. This property is just a stone’s throw away from Dubai’s downtown, making it convenient for guests to do some sightseeing at Burj Khalifa, shopping at Dubai Mall or soak up Dubai’s culture at the creek in between their meetings. The hotel opened in mid-2016 so is well equipped with start of the art meeting facilities and excellent accommodation.

EXPERIENCES

At the end of day one, guests were transported by private coaches to the five-star desert retreat, Al Maha, where they were treated to a night of fun with traditional Emirati entertainment and a BBQ. Al Maha offers a luxury desert experience, while also offering a peek at Dubai’s heritage. A desert party is also a unique experience for anyone from outside the Middle East.

mdocs, a leading software & services provider to the world’s most successful communications and media companies, recently organized their Annual Leadership Meet for the senior management of the organization and their families. The event took place on May 26, 2017, at Hotel Conrad in Pune and was managed to perfection by The Livewire Experience.

THE LIVEWIRE EXPERIENCE CRAFTS A TECHNOLOGICAL SPECTACLE FOR AMDOCS ANNUAL MEET BY SHANTANU JAIN

The Annual Leadership Meet of Amdocs had to be an event where the organization leaders would come together to imbibe this year’s strategy of Change & Transformation. Amdocs had just gone through a brand change and hence, the brief given to the agency was to drive the message of personal and business transformation through their leaders to focus on changing mindsets towards a better future. Delivering on the brief, Livewire coined the theme of ‘Future Forward’ for the event that saw multiple techbased digital engagements – right from the pre-event which saw QR code cupcakes go out as invitations to 200 leaders to the main event décor & design which was nothing less than a futuristic extravaganza. The highlight of the night, however, was an interactive walkway with touch sensors, a futuristic makeover zone, arcade and virtual reality games and UV Light Spin Art Station. The stage was designed with advanced technology by taking inspiration from the Future Forward theme and included a complete LED backdrop with customized content for each segment.

We won this multi-agency pitch all because of our creative designs & concepts that we brought to the table. The team worked tirelessly to ensure all the tech based activities were a success & of course to accommodate the client’s ever-changing requests. All in all, it was a great event that certainly raised the bar for the events to follow. PRIYANKA ROY KAPUR

DIRECTOR, THE LIVEWIRE EXPERIENCE

Entertainment for the night began with a digital tech-based quiz through a mobile application which worked as an ice breaker and then that evolved to internal musical acts by employees. The finale of the event saw entertaining acts by the dance troupe PMDS, which included a Robotic UV act & Interactive LED act which was the showstopper of the evening. Also, part of the lineup was a unique liquid nitrogen act by the Lab of Crazy Scientists.

INDUSTRY WATCH / MARKET PULSE

THE GOOD OLD DAYS BY HANY EZZAT

In this series, UAE-based advertising professional and Co-Founder of Crystâl Brand House, Hany Ezzat explores what makes brands and agencies meaningful and relevant. Here, he addresses the current challenges in the client-agency relationship. It is more than just an expression. The Good Old days are bittersweet. We say ‘the good old days’ when we deep inside, wish we were able to somehow relive good past moments or recreate them in our present day. I recently had a chat with my ex-Professor who introduced me to the world of advertising 20 years ago. During the call, I gathered the courage to confess the gap between what he taught in class and the reality of advertising. He went silent and then, agreed.

absorbs. The latest & by far cruellest trend is that clients pitch their business once a year and invite their own current agency to participate, parking all the supposedly good work that the agency delivered in the past year. But why would an agency pitch for its own existing client?

HANY EZZAT

Let’s go back to the basics. Companies aka Clients manufacture products. Their muscles are in R&D and manufacturing. Differentiation on a product level is led by innovation. This means a strong and relentless R&D department that is not only aware of the trends, but has the ability and power to predict them, when it comes to market and consumer expectations. Products are strongest when they have a story to tell, a story that starts with proven engineering, formulation, structure - or anything tangible and concrete. Agencies on the other hand create brands. The muscles of an agency are in its ability to conceive and bear new ideas, constantly. The sole role of an agency is to create. The differentiation one agency has over another is in its way of creating ideas, more so, in its unmatched Creative Identity. Each Agency bears new ideas from within its creative philosophy. While companies aka clients manufacture physical products, agencies build emotional brands. I believe that even with the most practical purchases, a purely practical consumer still buys a brand based on ‘how it makes him/her feel!’ Be it a washing machine or a laptop - it is all about perceptions and feelings. Agencies simply put soul into products. The above is what I studied in university two decades ago. The above indicates a relationship. It indicates a partnership between a client and an agency. The above reality indicates a sense of respect and more so, an acknowledgment on both parts of each other’s strengths. Back in the ‘good old days’ Leo Burnett and J. Walter Thompson were approached for their creative trademark. Clients reached out to Burnett’s creative vision and Thompson’s’ trademark approach to brand building. Cut to the last 20 years in the advertising industry in the Middle East. Agencies are required to hunt down businesses at no fee whatsoever. An agency pitch involves a substantial amount of time, effort and money the agency gladly

The question really is, are agencies in this present day and age, truly differentiated? Are all agencies now the same, with a different face?

Unfortunately, differentiation between agencies is now lost. In fact, differentiation is present but it is now driven by one thing only: Cost. It is now about, not so much the excellence of the work, but the lowest cost and the highest quality creative product. This shift has started way before the economic crisis waves its terror at us, clients and agencies. Agencies now live day to day in a state of instability of what could happen to their business. This unsettlement naturally creates a sense of dis-ease causing the work to ultimately suffer. The focus of agency members becomes ‘how to keep the client’ rather than how to create and invent. In order for a creative mind to invent and create, it needs not only space, but ease and confidence. Whom to blame then, if not the economic crisis? I guess a big part of the blame goes to the agencies. Clients nowadays don’t use the term agencies. They instead resort to suppliers and vendors. How can a creative house of ideas be called supplier or vendor? How did it come down to this? We are neither suppliers nor vendors - we are creators of ideas, brand builders and artists of communication. I guess through the years, agencies started losing credibility when the focus became on how to make the most money rather than on earning the highest respect. I guess it all started with greed and a merciless race to the top of revenue lists. It is only natural that greed leads to where we are today. Greed has led agencies to now be asked to deliver a top notch creative product at the lowest cost. Once an agency starts to focus on how much money it is making, the partnership gets compromised and the client starts to feel needed for his money and not for the opportunity to do good work. The equation of Brand & Creativity that used to generate revenue in the ‘good old days’ has become about Cost & Cost. Brands & Creativity are lost and along with it, thanks to the economic crisis too, high revenues and job security.

INDUSTRY WATCH / EEMA UPDATES

EEMA’s Efforts to Equip Industry for Transition to GST

It is agreed and understandable that there will be certain teetering, alignments and adjustments needed by organisations; but change is an inevitable truth of rediscovering one’s business. VINOD JANARDHAN

SECRETARY MAHARASHTRA, EEMA

Having been introduced by the government of India on July 1, 2017, there are a lot of doubts and questions in the events community regarding the impact of GST on event management services. Event and Entertainment Management Association (EEMA), India’s apex body for the events and experiential industry took on the initiative to organize multiple ‘KNOW GST’ seminars across the country to help event managers make a smoother transition. The first ‘KNOW GST’ seminar was held at the CLUB in Mumbai, on June 24, 2017, followed by Chennai on the same date, Delhi on July 3, Jaipur on July 14, Bangalore on July 15, Kolkata on July 17 and Hyderabad on August 5, 2017.

Vinod Janardhan, Secretary Maharashtra, EEMA added, “It is agreed and understandable that there will be certain teetering, alignments and adjustments needed by organizations; but change is an inevitable truth of rediscovering one’s business. The GST does bring the small and medium units under a tight regulatory regime which would be IT-driven. Hence the sooner we accept the truth, the better for us. GST may open the new option of small & medium business acquisitions. Margins will improve by the 1st quarter in FY 2018 – 19.”

The event in Mumbai began with Vinod Janardhan, Secretary Maharashtra for EEMA welcoming all delegates and setting the tone for the event. EEMA President Sabbas Joseph then launched the event as he remarked, “Disruptions affect our business, and we’ve identified the implementation of GST in our country as one of the biggest disruptions that we need to be ready for.”

4-Summits of Knowledge Exchange at The WOW Convention Asia 2017 THE 2-DAY CONVENTION COMPRISED OVER 30 KEY NOTES, PANEL DISCUSSION AND WORKSHOPS, FEATURING OVER 100 EXPERT SPEAKERS FROM INDIA, MIDDLE EAST AND EUROPE.

EXPERIENTIAL MARKETING SUMMIT With three invigorating sessions, the Summit highlighted how the Experiential Marketing industry is evolving through innovation, highlighting opportunities for growth and development. Here’s an overview of the sessions. 5 Experiential Marketing Innovations That Inspired Me Curated by Pramod Gaikwad, Founder and Director, Ice Global, this session began with Alexis Dijksterhuis, VP of Strategy and New Business, Flash Entertainment presenting on five technologies and innovations that are set to revolutionize experiential marketing, including Blockchain technology, Virtual Reality, Wearable Technology, Sensors, Data Personalization (Big Data and Beacon technology) and Artificial Intelligence. He observed, “Event experiences should be based on knowledge of how guests participate and become involved. Technology is a tool to enhance experiences or create experience.” Dijsterhuis was followed by Abhinav Sharma, Brand Manager, Adidas Running, India, who presented five of Adidas Running’s own campaigns, events and experiences that were exemplary and inspiring. He remarked, “What we struggle with at the beginning of the ideation process is to tread the fine line between Marketing KPI’s and context for the event. Often these are at loggerheads.” Next, Satish Upadhyay, Head – Seller Marketing, Amazon spoke about what experiential marketing means to him and why it works so well. Global campaigns and experiences that are memorable for him include 3M’s $3million Bullet Proof Challenge; the Coca Cola Small World Machines; The Social Swipe campaign; TNT’s campaign in Belgium; and Red Bull’s Stratos Freefall. Niousha Ehsan, Chief Energy Officer of Dubai-based Linkviva, explicated on examples of experiences from around the world that inspires her company to pay attention to every aspect of what goes into creating an experience. These included ‘The Museum of Feelings’ by glade; ‘Global Beer Fridge’; and ‘The Pancake Selfie Express’. 10 Hacks for Digital + Events to Deliver Truly Integrated Activations The second session of the Experiential Marketing Summit was again curated by Pramod Gaikwad, and saw both brands and agencies dissect strategies for digital to be used conjointly with experiential for truly impactful activations. Rajiv Dhingra, Founder & CEO, WATConsult, showcased the power of digital to leverage experiential. “If you’re looking to do 56

an event, even if it’s to provide sampling, you can use digital to make it way more interesting and make a simple idea seem much bigger. Digital needs to be a part of an event from the beginning to the end,” he remarked. Suveer Bajaj, Co-Founder, FoxyMoron followed Dhingra, spoke of how Snapchat spectacles, audio beacons, virtual reality, and interactive installations, all allow for amazing content to be generated and amplified. “Now while events manage to cater content to a small school of people, digital can amplify messaging and build a certain amount of reach. Digital allows you to take that impact to a wider network of audiences, as remotely, distinctly and quickly as possible,” said Bajaj. Maneesha Khanna, Associate Director – Head Media and Digital Marketing, PepsiCo said, “Technology and experiences, lent to scale to relevant audiences is an unbeatable combination that we should all really think about, rather than just experiences standing by themselves.” Should Experiential be 50% of the Marketing Budget? Curated by Mandeep Malhotra, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Social Street, this session looked at what it would take for experiential marketing to command a larger chunk of marketing budgets. Debosmita Majumder, Head of Marketing and Communication, PUMA said, “At Puma, experiential is about giving consumers a money-can’t-buy experience. We always try and think of something a consumer can’t go out and buy.” Aashish Rai, General Manager & Head, National Brand Properties, OOH Media & Activations, Idea shared how Idea has built its experiential marketing strategy on three pillars: music, sports and entertainment. He said, “I see challenges with measuring the impact of an event and the ROI. One of the things that needs to be addressed is measurability and scalability of events before experiential marketing budgets can be increased.” Avinash Oza, Head – Rural Activation, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.’s Farm Division – Mahindra Tractors revealed how all consumer engagements by Mahindra Tractors has as at its heart its promise of ‘technology se taraf.’ “We use a sniper approach to be more impactful, rather than just having mass campaigns,” said Oza. Chaitanya Rele, VP – Head of Marketing, Havmor Ice Cream Ltd. spoke about how Havmor’s ‘Chief Tasting Officer’ campaign worked so well because it had at its heart a business challenge that it actually needed its consumers to solve. He said, “Experiential is largely about impact. It’s about driving an opportunity to get someone to try something.”

EEMA LEADERSHIP DIALOGUES The EEMA Leadership Dialogues is a new initiative to foster growth through collaborations in the Asian industry at the region’s biggest business platform – WOW which is in association with EEMA.

Niyati Vora, Vice President, Brand Activation, Wizcraft said, “No one can give you power. You need to take that power. It isn’t empowerment when you give a pregnant woman maternity leave / flexibility. That is only basic.”

#CollaborationNation-India-UAE Business Exchange (EEMA-ILEA)

Anjali Pasricha, Director, CS Direkt added, “Empowerment is actually when you stand up for yourself. Women need to work to provide equal platforms for other women. We need that leveraging platform.”

This session saw EEMA play host to a delegation of the International LIVE Events Association (ILEA) – Middle East chapter, as part of an ongoing endeavour to build cross-region opportunities between India and the Middle East with the platform of the WOW Awards and Convention Asia.

Poonam Lal, Director, Marketing Solutions remarked, “Empowerment is the ability to make choices freely and to have self-belief and self-determination. Late night drops again are only basic not special! We care is about gender equality and not only women empowerment.”

Best practices, opportunities for business, collaboration, and joint initiatives were some of the areas of discussion.

Talking about We Care, Sabbas Joseph added, “It’s not about special rights. It’s about dialogue. Women and men are not equal- women are better! Some of the brightest at Wizcraft have been women! We care is about creating an environment that allows women to perform their best. We care is about Listening to HER point of view.”

Sabbas Joseph, President, EEMA and Founder & Director, Wizcraft International remarked, “When you look at India and Dubai, you will realize that there is a lot of Indianness in the market place. You can live in India and work in Dubai. However, decision making is mainly Arab-led or white-led.” Sharing her view of the potential that lies in India, Niousha Ehsan, CEO, Linkviva said, “India can fill up a major gap in terms of talent in Dubai. Dubai is a huge MICE market; however, the biggest challenge in Dubai remains talent and production cost.” Sanjeev Pasricha, VP, EEMA, and MD & CEO, CS Direkt Group, who has just opened an office in Dubai said, “Mostly Backending for projects in Dubai happens in India. Clients in Dubai are demanding end to end solutions.” Addressing the fact that competition both in Dubai and from agencies outside who do work on a project to project basis, make it financially difficult for agencies to make huge profit, Dan Bolton, President, International Live Events Association (ILEA) – Middle East Chapter asked panelists, “Is Dubai the real pot of gold?” Sceptical of starting a full-fledged business in Dubai, Mandeep Singh, MD & CEO, CPM India Sales & Marketing said, “CPM is in 30 countries but not in Dubai! I feel Indian agencies are still only dating the Dubai market and the day we get married, I guess we will come to Dubai!” Emma Clark, Event Director, Action Impact, the agency that did the opening of Dubai Parks and Resorts remarked, “In Dubai, Revenue is more but profits are quite less. We are continually losing pitches against overseas agencies because of our cost being so high.” Empowered Women | We Care: Insights and Inspirations from the Leading Ladies of the Experiential Industry With the launch of the We Care initiative by EEMA this year, this session addressed some of the issues women in the industry face, with the view of empowering them to succeed. Sushma Gaikwad, Founder & Director, Ice Global, “Work should not stop. And there are guidelines that apply to ‘We care’ initiative.”

58

Client-Agency Relationships | Can it Evolve in the Experiential Realm? This session looked at how client-agency relationships need to evolve. Michael Menezes, Chairman, Showtime Group, and EEMA NAC said, “The biggest problem is procurement. People in the procurement department are doing their job to reduce cost. Events, unlike advertising is not treated like an industry.” Brian Tellis, Chairman, Fountainhead MKTG, and EEMA NAC added, “For maximum productivity there has to be partnership. Transparency is not about numbers. It’s about deliverables, quality, etc. Yes we do buffer our presentations when we present to the clients.” Lydia Buthello, EVP and Head – Brand Experience & Events Star India, Star Network remarked, “We have a commercial team that works on only reducing costs of aspects where it is possible to reduce costs - maybe like sound, light, etc. But you cannot take an idea from one agency and ask someone else to execute it!” Ashish Pherwani, Partner, Advisory Services, Ernst & Young added, “Clients should definitely pay a pitch fee to reward the research and work someone has put in.” New Growth Markets | Business Opportunities, Market Realities With some of the most outstanding work done in the country taking place in new growth markets including Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad, many of the agencies from these regions are at par with national players in terms of conceptualisation and execution capabilities. Looking at success stories from these markets, this panel explored opportunities and limitations in these markets. The session was moderated by Ankur Kalra, CEO, Vibgyor Brand Services. Jai Mundra, Founder & Managing Director, Beep Experience Management said, “The perception of being a regional agency is a huge downer and a disappointment to us because more often than not this costs us a lot of business, irrespective of the

INDUSTRY WATCH / COVER STORY fact that the pitch is good, the ideas and creatives are great, the capabilities are there and everything is in place. But the fact that we’re not based out of the capital acts to our disadvantage.” Vijay Bokadia, Director, Moksh Events Private Ltd. said, “Infrastructure is a huge challenge, especially in a place like West Bengal. So our hands are tied for certain national campaigns, as the resources are not there. So a client may lean towards a national agency as they bring their infrastructure with them.” Khantil Mehta, Director, Go Bananas remarked, “National agencies have a lot of processes, and it’s quite obvious the client sees a far more refined presentation. The overall impact and the way they have everything in place gives them a leverage. It’s also the talent, where national players get ready talent, while smaller regional players have to train their own talent, though this is changing now, too.”

Showcasing the enhanced partnership the government is offering, Dr. Ali Hasan Follad, explained, “We want to encourage Indian Weddings in Bahrain, and I will tell everyone here the same thing I mentioned to the Mehta-Family: We will treat the wedding as our own family’s wedding, and our support will reflect exactly this!” Moving forward on the topic of Unfamiliar / Off-beat destinations to host weddings in Ali Bakhtiar spoke about the important of having global expertise and the production capabilities to execute exception décor concepts in such destinations. He explained, “Ali Bakhtiar Productions has facilities in the Middle East and in Europe, which makes us exceptionally poised to not only bring in our design capabilities, but also ensure the correct value in producing these designs.” Discovering Design Experts@WOW 2017

Rakhi Kankaria, Director, Rachnoutsav Events commented, “For regional players to make that reachability possible is a challenge. Tenders are a challenge, as most of them have a clause where unless you have multiple offices across the country you cannot make a pitch. We have the ability, but still can’t position ourselves in those spaces.”

Curated by Aarti Manocha, Founder & Director, MtoM Events, the objective of this session was for the audience to get an insight on a varied set of Design Experts in the Wedding space. Each of the 5 speaker’s presented a unique concept / brief for a challenging wedding design project they were involved in, and showcased their décor ideation and execution process.

EXPERIENTIAL CELEBRATIONS SUMMIT

Abhishek Kaushik, Director, Designs by Abhishek presented his unique expertise on The Art of Engaging guests with especially curated Decor and Design, from the moment they arrive at a celebration. The importance of creating memories by involving your guests with experiences they can share.

The ExCel Summit once again drew insights and celebrated successful case studies that inspired and set new benchmarks for the Wedding and Social Events industry. Planning Destination Weddings in Unfamiliar Territory Moderated by Rajeev Jain, Director, Rashi Entertainment, this session looked at factors to be considered when planning weddings in an unfamiliar destination. This session was powered by Bahrain Island Weddings, the specialised wedding promotion division for Bahrain. Speakers included Mahesh Shirodkar, Managing Director, Tamarind Global; Kainaz Sethna, Co-founder and Director, Seven Steps; Ali Bakhtiar, Director, Al Bakhtiar Designs; and Dr Ali Hasan Follad, Adviser of Tourism, Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority. The common thread and case study connecting all panelists in this session was the recently executed Mehta-wedding planned by Seven Steps and Tamarind Global jointly, in Bahrain, with Ali Bakhtiar as the specialised décor expert on the project. The wedding was executed with specialised support of the Bahrain Government through Dr. Ali Hasan Follad as the main point of contact. Commenting on Bahrain as a wedding destination, Mahesh Shirodkar, explained, “Bahrain turned out to be a pleasant surprise as a wedding destination. As Indians we may not be familiar with the destination, and have some pre-conceived notions on conservativeness etc. But I’d like to point out that this is in fact not true at all, and we had tremendous flexibility while managing this project.” Kainaz Sethna, Seven Steps added, “When you collaborate and have the right support in a destination, I think that’s the most important aspect to elegant the experience. The possibilities are endless when there’s initiative from the destination as well. That’s exactly what we experienced in Bahrain.”

Ali Bakhtiar of Ali Bakhtiar Designs LLC with over 20 years of experience in weddings and events, interior design and architecture. Ali Bakhtiar Designs is an international company focused on high-end projects for clients all over the globe with offices. For his presentation, he took the audience through a never seen before, exclusive, high-end Royal Wedding... Nafisa Sheikh, Founder and Owner, Purple Tree Events showcased how personalization, and customization in wedding celebrations can have many interesting manifestations, if paid careful attention to! Vishal Chand, Co-founder, Wedding Duo; showcased a unique scenario, a challenging one actually, when the client gives no particular ‘brief’, how one can still create a palette of ideas, and have it manifested beautifully in design. Anushree Agarwal, Director, Theme Weaver Designs, presented the unique planning, décor and execution details of her most challenging project, her own wedding!

INDUSTRY WATCH / COVER STORY Chairman, Fountainhead MKTG and EEMA NAC, provided a much-needed assessment of what does and doesn’t work. Sabbas Joseph, President, EEMA and Founder & Director, Wizcraft International said, “It takes a lot to get things done. Any big moment or big event will always take place because you surmounted multiple challenges. All I can say is, don’t give up.” Emma Clark, Event Director, Action Impact added, “The one thing that makes it worthwhile is having clients that understand that it is hard work.” Alexis Dijksterhuis, Vice President, Strategy and New Business, Flash Entertainment reiterated the importance of knowing your market and where the show is happening, especially when going to an emerging market, and getting the timing and preparation right. Lee Charteris, Operations Director, Kuwait National Cultural District said, “Even if an event is free, you need to have an idea of how many people are going to come to an event, be it a registration of intent or some way of monitoring interest. The number of security, police and facilities just get divided among those who are there.” Exploring Artists’ POV on the LIVE Entertainment Economy Moderated by Tarsame Mittal, Founder, TM Talent Management, this lively session saw Raftaar, Rapper/Producer/Composer and Vishal Dadlani, Si nger, Music Director share their own stories getting to where they are today, and also their experiences performing at events and weddings, enlightening the industry on some of the challenges they face. Tarsame Mittal remarked, “The truth is that all artists would like to have a transparent approach to what they do. There may be lot of people in between, but there has to be a communication channel, because eventually the artist goes on stage and performs for an audience.”

to life the Mumbai Marathon, Vivek Singh, Jt. MD, Procam International Pvt. Ltd. said, “IP creation is something that’s less intellect-driven and more heart-and-passion-driven. You’ve got to believe in your idea. And only then can something called IP creation actually happen.” Kanishka Singha, Director, Creatives & Content, ThoT said, “From where I’m coming from, I believe collaboration is a great way to go.” Fuelling Live Businesses: Investors, Partners, Consultants Curated by Vinit Karnik, Business Head, ESP Properties, this session looked at what it takes to sustain and scale up IP’s and the role that investors, partners and consultants can play. Jatin Varma, Founder, Comic Con India, spoke of how he entered into a joint venture with Reed Exhibitions, one of the largest exhibitions’ company in the world, that’s responsible for the largest Comic Con events globally, explaining what they bring to the table and what motivated him to seek a partner. Deepak Choudhary, Founder and Director, Event Capital, is responsible for identifying and investing in some of the most successful IP’s in the country. He observed, “There are four areas of an IP to look at: sales, marketing, curation and operations and logistics.” Talking about what a brand wants from an association with an IP, Mahesh Kanchan, Marketing Head, Carlsberg said, “From a marketer’s point of view, I look at ROI for sure.” Chaitanya Mathur, Co-Director, The Grub Fest added, “The IP itself was something we saw our future valuation in, our future growth in, not thinking that the first edition would be successful. That’s something anyone getting into IP events has to understand. “

Raftaar added, “I feel when there are 3-4 people involved like the event company, the artist manager, some other company or coordinator, someone promises something and not everyone is in the loop.” Vishal Dadlani commented, “The areas where we see most compromise are in aspects of the show like light and sound, where we’re asked to make do with what’s provided. The other thing you need to look at, is making a wedding gig bigger and brighter than just a wedding gig. Let’s make the production better.” Freshly Baked! Learnings from the First Year of a New IP Curated by Shaju Ignatius, Director, The Ignite Enterprise, this session saw IP owners share on the kind of results they look to get from an IP in its first year, and the way forward. On the subject of the market for destination IP’s in India, Siddharth Chaturvedi, CEO, Event Crafter who is responsible for Taalbelia, a boutique festival that provides a holistic experience to families at Mundhwa, Rajasthan, spoke about how the event was marketed so that it sold out in the first year itself and also how he didn’t rely on sponsorships. THE ESSENTIAL BUSINESS CONNECTION: Marketers, Event Suppliers, Destinations and Venues #Meet Marketers

One of the prominent goals for brand CMO’s today is to find creative and dynamic agencies that can create clutter-breaking experiential initiatives to meet the brand objectives. One of the most daunting challenges for an event agency is to find an opportunity to meet relevant brand marketers and convince them about what they as agency partners can bring to the brand. The initiative #MeetMarketers launched at the WOW Awards & Conventions Asia 2017 was an endeavour towards this direction and served as a platform where agencies got a chance to meet top brand custodians in a one-on-one speed dating format. Over 10 brand custodians net one-to-one with 10 varied agency heads, showcasing their unique expertise and ideas. Some participants shared their experience:

Sriram Gopalaswamy

Head – Commercial & Datacenter Group Marketing Lenovo India

“#MeetMarketers at WOW Asia 2017 was an exciting new initiative that gave me a chance to meet 10 interesting event agencies at one place. It was amazing to see the quality of work done by them. Platforms like #MeetMarketers are important for the experiential industry today given the volume and diversity of work in the market. The initiative was insightful and has helped me in planning my channel marketing programs.”

Avinash Oza

Head – Rural Activation, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. Farm Division-Mahindra Tractors

Amit Gupta

Director – STORY

“#MeetMarketers is a brilliant platform for event managers like us. Meeting 10 top brand custodians individually would take us around one and half months ordinarily. Thanks to the platform i got a chance to meet all of them in one hour. I look forward to being a part of it again.”

Event Show Asia 2017

The ever expanding events and experiential industry in Asia still remains largely unorganised and fragmented. Over 70% of event-related business for Asia can be sourced to Asia, yet it is not uncommon for event planners to rely on resources limited to the 6 Degrees Of Separation – which often is not the best solution. Event Show Asia, co-located with WOW Awards and Convention Asia, seeks to elevate this often primitive planning process by bringing together Event Planners and the latest in event technology and suppliers on one, common, business-conducive platform. Suppliers showcased their technology and products through the various venues and pre-function areas of the Pullman Hotel, thereby ensuring planners an ‘experience’ of what’s ‘new’. Delegates had a chance to sample varied kinds of event supplies at every juncture of the convention and awards, immersing them in opportunities of what they could use next in their own projects. The Event Show Asia also had a dedicated area where these exhibitors could meet one-one-one and discuss business and enquiries with planners.

“EVENTFAQS’ #MeetMarketers platform was a wonderful window for us to meet 10 event & activation partners. At #WOWASIA2017 we got couple of new partners on-board for activating our brands.”

Gearhouse South Africa Chooses Avid South African based, Technical supplier to live events, Gearhouse South Africa recently purchased 2 Avid VENUE S6L-32D systems to add to their existing AVID Audio inventory in their Johannesburg operation. Llewellyn Reinecke, Audio Departmental Head, Gearhouse South Africa said, “We used Avid on the World Cup 2010 and on numerous annual local festivals with international artists. The successful fit of the Avid systems with Gearhouse’s demanding rental requirements, makes it a natural choice to continue the legacy with its successor, the Avid S6L-32D. This is a truly comprehensive mixing solution with complete file integration but more importantly it is faster, exceptionally versatile with a very efficient workflow.” Llewellyn Reinecke

TECHNOLOGY / PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

5 FANTASTIC INNOVATIONS FROM TAGGLABS TO AMAZE AUDIENCES AT YOUR NEXT EVENT

T

echnology has completely revolutionized the world we live in. It has changed the way how we communicate, how we shop & travel and it is now changing the way we organize events around the world. If the most successful events in the last decade are any indicator, we can safely conclude that technology integration is the biggest engagement factor at events today. Tagglabs in one such company that has always pushed the envelope when it comes to technological innovations at events and this feature, we at ExM are sharing with you 5 fantastic innovations from the agency to amaze audiences at your next event.

1. MIND WAVE RACING

Mind Wave Racing is a game that is played based on the concentration level of the player. A headgear worn by the player in this game controls the direction & speed of the vehicle in the race to win the game. HOW IT WORKS The scale model bike/car would be connected to the neuro sensor attached to the player’s head and the neuro sensor senses the concentration level of the player and counts till it reaches a stipulated pre-defined unit. As soon as the guest’s concentration reaches the assigned level, the bike/ car moves forward. There is also a twist in the game, if the concentration level of the player drops the vehicle will stop and not move forward. Thus, the guest must maintain the concentration level to move the bike/car till the finish line and win the game against the opponent. COST: INR 3 LACS

2. TWEET CAFE

The Tweet Cafe serves as a vending machine that provides the users with exciting gifts and merchandize with 94

just a Tweet. Tweet for Treat is the overall motto of this innovation. Many engagement events today focus on gratifying their guests. The Tweet café exchanges gifts for a Tweet that also helps in generating buzz about the event on social media. HOW IT WORKS A member of the audience enters the activity area faces the setup and chooses a door number on basis of the merchandize behind the door. The user then tweets a certain hashtag with the door number onto their twitter wall. Upon posting, the door automatically opens and the user gets the merchandize for free. COST: INR 1.30 LACS

3. PEDDLE TO LIGHT UP

It is a well-known fact that Cycling helps one remain fit. But what if cycling helps to light up your space? The aim of the innovation Peddle to Light Up is to convert your mechanical energy into the kinetic energy in order to light up the light bars. Thus, pedal the cycle to light up the light bars. The more you pedal, the more LED lights get lit. HOW IT WORKS A user would need to paddle the cycle to light up the light bars. This can be a multiplayer engagement activity as well. The users will compete in groups of 2 and the first one to light up the topmost light bar wins the game.

social media platforms where the bot will perform the action just with a Tweet. The user will just have to tweet with a hashtag and a post to get their drink from the Robo-Bartender. COST: INR 4 LACS

5. BATAK

Batak is a metallic structure which tests your physical flexibility & mental attentiveness all at once. This makes for a fun and engaging game designed to attract masses for getting indulged in catching the blinking lights as fast as they can. It serves as a single or multiplayer game where the user must tap as many tactile buttons as possible in each time limit and the score will be displayed on the screen. HOW IT WORKS The user comes to the setup and registers his/her name. As the game begins, lights start popping up randomly on the tactile buttons. The player must pop/tap a maximum number of lit buttons in the specified time. The duration of the game play can be 30-60 seconds as per the requirements. The number of hits is timed and the score is displayed on the screen. COST: INR 1.5 LACS

COST: INR 1.25 LACS

4. RO-BO BAR TENDER

Ro-bo Bar Tender is a perfect example of a humanoid in today’s tech-dependent world as this tech innovation features a Robot as your bartender. HOW IT WORKS The Robo-Bartender comes with the ability to serve the drink as and when required. This can be integrated with
