OVERVIEW
Awards pay tribute to excellence in radio The annual event honours and celebrates those who keep us informed and entertained ý The Liberty Radio Awards celebrate excellence in the various aspects of radio and the best of the best are rewarded with the industry’s highest accolade — a Liberty Radio Award. As the only industry-wide awards programme in SA, the Liberty Radio Awards brings together all sectors of the radio industry. Focusing on excellence, the awards recognise and reward those who make radio that is listener-focused, compelling, informative, entertaining and educational.
The Awards would not be possible without the support of our title sponsor Liberty. Liberty was founded on the philosophy of providing for the future, and making excellent radio serves the ultimate objective of the awards — ensuring the long-term future of the radio industry. What it means: An exclusive forum where the best in the industry are recognised and awarded accolades accordingly
In today’s environment, the average consumer is bombarded with a multitude of media options. Radio professionals need to be mindful that there is also the “off” button, so they have to be at the top of their game to attract and retain listeners. This year’s Liberty Radio Awards attracted almost 1,900 entries from across the industry. Apart from the excellent body of work across the various categories, an exceptionally encouraging indicator for the future health of the industry was the number and the quality of Bright Star category submissions.
The Liberty Radio Awards is a year-round programme run by a dedicated team that constantly seeks to improve the awards. Processes of applying feedback from the industry are refined to ensure the relevance of the awards. Increasing participation from the industry is proof that the team and the awards are on the right track. As in all competitions of this nature, there are far fewer winners than there are participants. We encourage the entire industry to continue to embrace these awards, as the ultimate winner of the Liberty Radio Awards is the listener. x

MESSAGE FROM LIBERTY
Supporting a medium that changes lives As the most far-reaching medium in SA, radio is a key vehicle of transformation, and Liberty a proud partner ý Liberty applauds the winners, all of whom have demonstrated excellence and the highest standards in the creation and production of consistently captivating radio programmes — encompassing public broadcasting services, campus radio stations, community radio and commercial stations. More than a century after radio became popular, this intimate medium continues to hold a special place in many lives, even with the evolution of technology. Radio remains the most far-reaching form of media in SA, which gives testimony to the continued high standards in the creation of compelling content.
Radio is more than entertainment — it is informative, educational and a daily companion for many South Africans. Radio connects people across different persuasions, ages, genders, races, communities and locations. The winners play a daily role in the transformation and enrichment of people’s lives. They share what’s happening in our world and on our roads; they play the music we want to hear and highlight events not to miss; they invite us into conversations about issues that are close to our hearts, they make us laugh and cry; and make us think deeply about important issues. They are our companions and

advisers — as they entertain, inform, and make us think, often differently — about technology, diversity, the environment, human rights, justice, fame and fortune, entrepreneurship, our finances and much, much more. Liberty’s commitment to these awards encourages those who strive to raise the bar on credible news and storytelling to continue
to do so. We acknowledge that lives are changed when knowledge is used in the service of humanity. This is the same goal we at Liberty strive for, through our continued demonstration of making financial freedom possible. x To view the full list of winners, please visit: www.libertyradioawards.co.za Thursday May 16, 2019

METHODOLOGY
Credible process The results are checked by an international auditing firm to ensure veracity ý The 2019 Liberty Radio Awards gala banquet was held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Saturday April 13. The awards celebrate the entire radio industry spanning the four key licence sectors namely: campus, community, public broadcasting services and commercial. The awards cast a spotlight on the exceptional work in SA radio, celebrate and acknowledge excellence across several categories incorporating presenters, producers, news, and various station categories. The ultimate hero of the awards evening is radio, and the evening is in essence the Oscars of
the radio industry. The awards are credible, welljudged and have gained traction across the industry with participation from stations which reach more than 90% of SA’s radio listeners. This year’s awards programme attracted almost 1,900
entries from more than 150 radio stations across the country. Entries are adjudicated and scored by a panel of experts who work independently, and who enter their scores on an online adjudication platform. The scores are then submitted to an international auditing
firm, which ensures the veracity of the results. The underlying philosophy driving the Liberty Radio Awards is to consistently raise the standard of the industry to maintain radio’s profile as the foremost media choice in the country. x

STATION OF THE YEAR — COMMERCIAL
Kaya FM leads the pack This is the crowning glory of the Liberty Radio Awards. The criteria for determining the winner include on-air success and innovation as well as audience growth and community outreach. It takes into account the station’s ‘good radio citizenship’ role within the industry ý Kaya FM 95.9 celebrated its 21st birthday last year. As the “home of the Afropolitan”, Kaya FM reflects the life of the predominantly black urban listener between the ages of 25 and 49 living in Gauteng. The station defines the Afropolitan as a mature, socially conscious individual who is deeply rooted in their
heritage and tradition. A thought leader who is self-determining, discerning, well-informed and a player in the global environment. The station continually innovates and looks to do things differently to the rest of the industry — it marches to the beat of its own drum and it seeks out leaders
within their respective fields to headline the key shows, focusing on topics on which their opinion is respected. Feature programmes and themed months add to the richness of the Kaya FM listener’s experience. The station has also expanded into the digital space, and apart
from a strong presence on traditional social media platforms, Kaya FM has launched its own online TV channel. An investment into research ensures that the station’s content remains on-point and relevant to the listener. It assists the station to not only refine and streamline the content offering — it also guides the station towards developing a more intimate relationship with the Afropolitan. The station also focuses on being a good corporate citizen and on giving back to the community through projects that focus mainly on education. Kaya FM may be only 21, but with three Liberty Radio Awards Commercial Station of the Year accolades under its belt, this young adult Afropolitan station has strong opinions about where it is headed and what it takes to get there. x Thursday May 16, 2019

listener-focused and aligned to the station’s vision, which is “to empower and inspire all isiXhosaspeaking South Africans”. The station positions itself as a “true and trusted friend”, and that is the philosophy that drives the station’s content. Demonstrating a clear understanding of the listener, Umhlobo Wenene strives to make
programming that is distinct and compelling; programming that promotes nation building, supports democracy and contributes to
social cohesion. With four awards from 10 nominations, Umhlobo Wenene is the 2019 Liberty Radio Awards, PBS Station of the Year. x

STATION OF THE YEAR — COMMUNITY
HOT 91.9 FM was the hot favourite The station’s focus on philanthropic work proved a winning formula
ý This is the third consecutive year that HOT 91.9 FM has won the Community Station of the Year category at the Liberty Radio Awards. The station boasts a line-up of some of SA’s top radio talent, mixed with some new emerging talent — identified through the station’s own training academy and nurtured and trained internally.
The station is very focused on philanthropic work within its community, and its outreach programmes have touched many lives. The “Hot Cares” Charity affects the community and brings comfort and relief to those in need. The station runs an annual radio training programme “The Hot
Radio Academy”. The four-month course is open to everyone, and is presented free of charge. Training is given by many of the HOT 91.9 FM personnel, and guest lecturers from various theatres of the industry are brought in to give broader insight. The course wraps up with a three-week practical
element hosted at the HOT 91.9 FM studios. Not only is the academy providing talent for HOT 91.9 FM, several other stations have employees who are alumni of the academy. With a clearly defined geographical community, HOT 91.9 FM strives to be relevant to the community, and has embarked on several initiatives that improve the overall quality of life for all in the community. Tuks FM 107.2 ends its lull Five category wins returns the station to the top of Campus Radio ý Tuks FM 107.2 has for many years been a significant contributor of talent to the radio industry, with alumni found at many leading stations around the country. The sta12

tion is back on top of the campus radio world in SA and attributes this to a renewed focus on its listeners. Having previously dominated the Campus Category at the Radio Awards, Tuks FM has been through an awards lull over the past few years. But this year it came back with a vengeance,
scooping five wins from 18 finalist nominations. Among its wins, Tuks FM 107.2 should be extremely proud of the Radio Innovation category, where its “Hear the Sights” entry beat several commercial stations. This also showed the great spirit among the team, which took a
group of visually impaired children to the local zoo and then used sound to describe the sights — hence “Hear the Sights”. It’s campaigns like this that showcase the ability of Campus Radio to set young creative minds free and to be a great platform for learning the craft of radio. x
