Happy Holidays to our members and neighbors, As if the holidays weren’t always an exciting time of the year, we here at Ever’man are even more excited than normal. At the time of writing this letter, our second location on 9 Mile Road is on schedule for a Grand Opening on December 11, 2019. We cannot wait to open the doors and share this exciting new chapter of Ever’man with all of you. Construction is going smoothly and we are nearing the home stretch. About the time that this issue of The Healthy Alternative is being printed, the exterior of the building is nearly complete. Refrigeration cases have arrived and air conditioning units are being installed. Shelving is slated to arrive in the first half of November and we plan to begin stocking the shelves the week before Thanksgiving. If you drive by the work site, you will see landscaping and other finishing touches developing as the season continues. As you read this issue and prepare for your Thanksgiving feast, the final details of our new store will be coming to life and our team will be hard at work preparing the 9 Mile

Even with all of the excitement and anticipation, we remember that the holidays are first and foremost about making memories with friends and family. At Ever’man, we are proud to each year bring you the best from our brand partners and vendors. Don’t forget that, if you’re also going to have a jampacked holiday season with work and social obligations, we have Stress Less Meals to take some of the preparations off your to-do list. I hope you will make sure to add our 9 Mile Road Grand Opening festivities to your holiday plans. We will have a beautiful new store and cafe to share with you, plus giveaways, chances to meet the makers behind some of your favorite local products, cooking demonstrations and product tastings, live music and much more. Please follow along on social media for the most up-to-date information on Grand Opening activities and be sure to share the news with your friends and family. Best wishes and see you soon,

Board News “Is there value in it?” What a great question to help guide our lives and to remind us that we are here for a purpose. In this day and age, full of amusements, TV sitcoms, junk food, and mindless distractions, it seems as though society has given us all a license to waste time and avoid deeper thinking and relationships. Have you noticed recently people sitting at a table, not talking to one another but all staring intently at their smart-phones? I’m sure you have. The Bad News. Despite our large health care industry in America, many people struggle with their weight and chronic health issues. Yet there is an ongoing reliance on fast food chains and convenience consumption that is damaging to our health and wellbeing. Often times, people struggle with health issues but are at a major disadvantage due to the current status quo in our country. There certainly is a health care crisis in America and I believe it has more to do with the fact that we are a sick country than how we approach our health care system. So what is the answer? How can we correct this monumental problem?

BOARD PRESIDENT DAVE DEBLANDER

The Good News. The good news is that the problem is fixable! My hope is that we can all start by personally taking the time and effort to begin a regiment of natural and organic eating habits and daily exercise. The easiest way to address this problem is through individual action, one day at a time. When you decide to make a difference in your life and feed your body with a wholesome, natural, organic diet, you will be energized. Others will notice, become curious about the positive changes in your life and start asking questions. They will see that it is possible to be healthy and energetic. The Best News. This issue is one we can address! You can do something about it and you can be the solution. While it seems as though most major, national problems are very difficult for us to fix personally but not this one. We help fix the problem but we are greatly benefited on a personal level by taking the right action. That’s a pretty good situation that I hope encourages you. Not only are you part of the solution but so is Ever’man. There isn’t another store like it in the local area where you can trust the products you are purchasing are have been screened and selected to meet our high standards for healthy eating. The grand opening of our new Nine Mile Rd. store is approaching, and we are thrilled beyond measure! Stay in touch with us, watch social media and news outlets and plan on visiting the Nine Mile Road Ever’man. You will love it and we are sure the downtown store will continue to impress and delight you too! So, is there value in a healthy lifestyle? At Ever’man, we certainly think there is and we hope you do to.

Avoiding Holiday Hazards

By: Stephanie Sharp and Dale Fleming, BRACE Training Coordinator

The winter holidays are a time of joy and celebration. Don’t let tragedy tarnish your family’s memories. Holiday safety is an issue that burns brightest from late November to mid-January, when families gather, parties are scheduled and travel spikes. Take some basic precautions when decorating and cooking to ensure your family remains safe and injury-free throughout the season.

DECORATING

Keep poisonous plants out of reach of pets and children. Poinsettias, mistletoe, holly and lilies bear warning for furry friends and curious kiddos. If you have cats, be sure to keep fallen pine needles neatly swept up to avoid transfer of fir tree oils that can cause intestinal distress. Water natural trees daily and keep watch for fresh greenery that might dry over time. When taking your tree home from the farm or lot, have two inches trimmed off the bottom to expose fresh wood that will better absorb water. Turn off all decorative lights when you leave the house and when you’re going to bed for the night. Make sure to check all lights for frayed or exposed wires before using them in your decor. Be cautious with candle light. Keep all candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn. Extinguish flames before leaving the room and double check all candles are out before bed time or leaving the house.

COOKING

Learn how to prevent and extinguish grease fires. Share this information with anyone who comes to help cook in your kitchen. Create different “zones” in the kitchen with jobs to occupy each age group of children safely. Younger children should be kept at least three feet from hot surfaces and ovens. Invest in a trusty food thermometer and cook food to recommended temperatures. Review proper food storage and handling to prevent illness. BRACE (Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies) will be providing several opportunities for you to safely plan and prepare for an accident-free holiday season at the Ever’man Educational Center. These classes are free, family-friendly and full of practical tips you can take action on immediately. View classes at everman.org/events. Learn more about BRACE at bereadyalliance.org. Great beginnings

Set out a tray or two of snacks before the main meal; it’s a great way to welcome guests.

• Fresh dates served with a spiced, roasted nut mix • Artisanal cheese tray of local cheeses, with fine flatbread crackers and crostini • Crispy raw vegetables and a selection of dips, like soft chevre blended with herbs, hummus with a swirl of fresh or prepared pesto, or garlicky aioli

• Meat or veggie paté, sausage bites, cooked shrimp and smoked fish with spicy mustard sauce and baguette slices

Delicious desserts

An alternative (or addition) to the traditional pie makes for a memorable ending.

• Homemade brownies topped with mint or vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce • A selection of chocolate truffles served with freshly-baked cookies • Warm Brie glazed with apricot preserves and sprinkled with toasted pecans or walnuts

Ask LauraLee Tips, tricks and tools of the trade from Ever’man Education and Outreach Coordinator, LauraLee Nichols. What are your best tricks and tips for cold and flu season?

Best flu prevention strategy? Wash your hands! Also take probiotics and incorporate foods that boost your immune system into your meals as often as possible. Some options include blueberries, turmeric, oily fish, dark chocolate, broccoli, spinach and sweet potatoes. Make sure you stay hydrated. If you don’t like plain water, infuse your water with fruit or herbs like mint to make it more enticing to drink. You can also switch it up with coconut water. Herbal teas with honey and lemon can help soothe sore throats and pesky coughs. Whether you pick a blend that is specifically for supporting wellness when you feel under the weather or your tried and true favorite, a warm cup of tea with honey and lemon can be a constant comfort throughout the day. When possible, choose a local, raw honey to get the most benefits. We love East Hill Honey here at Ever’man-my favorite is the Orange Blossom in bulk.

As far as supplements go, during cold and flu season, I always have on hand Oil of Oregano. I use the Garden of Life dropper. It tastes awful, but it works like a charm for me. Now Allibiotic CF is a great defensive supplement, I swear by it for air travel and I just keep it on hand day to day as well. Then there’s NAC (N-acetyl L-cysteine,) amino acids that help thin mucus and support respiratory health as well. Another great tool in your winter wellness kit would be Nature’s Way Sambucus Elderberry Zinc Lozenges with Vitamin C. It packs a wellness wallop with multiple vitamins and nutrients, but tastes great without any artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. The key to beating the cold and flu season is to keep your wellness toolkit stocked up and listen to your body. It’s easier to catch the first sign of symptoms and strike back immediately, then try to cure yourself when your immune system has been compromised.

Can you share your current must-know nutrient?

I am a big fan of magnesium! Magnesium supports so many natural functions of a healthy body, over 300 of them actually. What I love about it is that it’s calming and energizing at the same time. First, always try to eat foods high in magnesium. • Pumpkin seeds: 46% of the RDI (recommended daily intake) in a quarter cup (16 grams.) We have a bunch of varieties in our bulk section, but I’m partial to the Eden Foods spicy pumpkin seeds. You can eat them as a snack or add them to a salad. • Spinach, boiled: 39% of the RDI in a cup (180 grams) • Swiss chard, boiled: 38% of the RDI in a cup (175 grams) • Dark chocolate (70–85% cocoa): 33% of the RDI in 3.5 ounces (100 grams) • Black beans: 30% of the RDI in a cup (172 grams) • Quinoa, cooked: 33% of the RDI the in a cup (185 grams) When it comes to magnesium supplements there are so many choices and it can be confusing! Our Wellness Department helped me find the right supplement with the educational materials at the Wellness Desk that explain the different types. I also like topical LifeFLo Magnesium Oil (use it after bathing as a part of your skincare routine) and Soothing Touch Epsom Salt Bath (my favorite is the Eucalyptus.) 10 | THE HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE

Cozy Celebrations You may have heard of the Danish word, hygge. Pronounced “hue-guh”, this term is one of those lovely linguistic rarities that is tough to translate simply into plain old English. In more recent years, it’s been a lifestyle trend that comes with to-do or to-buy lists. When examined more closely, you’ll see that hygge is a feeling—an intentional mindfulness that helps to brighten the harsh, dark Danish winters.

How to Hygge Your Holidays

By: Stephanie Sharp

Honor and anticipate seasonal changes.

If you’ve lived in Florida for more than a couple of years, you know that the weather can be a bit unpredictable throughout November. But once December rolls around, we can expect to see consistently chilly temperatures and even the die hard local surfers are donning wet-suits in the Gulf. Don’t let yourself be caught off guard the first chilly week of the year. Set aside some time in early November to assess your home and closet. See where you can carefully edit your summer essentials in favor of your cold weather best. No need to buy anything new—simply swapping your blankets and rotating your wardrobe can bring long-neglected treasures back to the surface of your life. If you do need to invest in some seasonal staples, seek out timeless materials and styles that will serve you and your family faithfully year after year. Not only will that be a great choice for the environment, but you’ll begin to associate years of warm memories with certain items.

Slow down your schedule.

Sure, your social calendar might be particularly crowded during the holidays. While we’re not saying you should cancel any plans or turn down invitations, we are suggesting that you let hygge guide your priorities. Strive for balance instead of busyness. If you know you’ve got a big party one weekend or plan to host out of town guests, give yourself some buffer time to rest and recharge between obligations. Bookending your festivities with self care and solitude can help you better enjoy your merry making and put the emphasis on memories instead of leaving you burnt out. You can even be more mindful of how you prepare for your busiest weeks. Break up cleaning marathons before company arrives into simple, short bursts for a week or two ahead. Give your kids or your partner plenty of time to prepare outfits or get ready for an event. Set boundaries and budgets for shopping and cooking so that you can clearly see where you might need to cut back or ask for help. A schedule with more breathing room helps you keep that feeling of cozy simplicity that is the heart of hygge.

20 | THE HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE

Try new traditions.

The holidays can be tough for so many reasons. Whether you or a loved one struggles with seasonal affective disorder, processing grief or managing other mental or physical health issues, there might be an opportunity for you to make the holidays more enjoyable for everyone. Look back at your holiday season in last year’s calendar or planner. Reflect on what felt or worked great, taking note of any days or weeks that were particularly tough to cope with. Instead of large family gatherings or opulent parties, could you opt instead for an open house type of event? Setting a few days throughout the season where you invite friends and families to drop in throughout the day to join you in simple pleasures like a fresh batch of cider or completing a puzzle might just result in even better conversation and create a sense of intimacy that traditional holiday festivities don’t offer. Discuss new ideas or proposed alternatives early with those who might count on you to be the host early in the season. If you approach these conversations with positivity and empathy, you might just find that people welcome the change of pace and look forward to trying these new traditions with you. All in all, hygge is about acknowledging what is charming and special in our daily lives. It’s not some Instagram aesthetic or another unattainable ideal. In our modern lives, it can even be seen as a direct challenge to the status quo of what our holidays should look like. Hygge for the holidays is simple. Just you, your loved ones and making memories together.

Celebrate daily delight with simple rituals.

For those who already love the holidays, this concept might seem a little silly. But consider this—much of the joy of the winter holidays in America are contained in a handful of special days. We can easily find ourselves underwhelmed by something we look forward to all year because a few hours didn’t live up to the anticipation we had built up in our minds. This can cause all manner of stressful emotions and even drive feelings of toxic comparison when we scroll social media. What do you love most about the special days of your family’s holiday traditions? Is it everyone gathering in the kitchen to cook together? Maybe you actually crave the sacred hours you spend savoring the presence of your loved ones, disconnected from the daily hustle and bustle? You might even just really love the treats you get to indulge in those days. Pursuing hygge means you get to bring elements of these special days into every day. Make it a priority to have extra family nights at home. Wake up a few minutes earlier to enjoy a nice cup of coffee, made slowly and sipped from a favorite mug. Light more candles or have a few more baths instead of showers. Don’t deny yourself these daily delights just because it’s not the official day of celebration.

Pensacola Children’s Business Fair By: Jennifer Fernandez

Pensacola has been privileged to have Ever’man support its community-based initiative of improving early childhood learning. Every Tuesday morning mothers, fathers, grandparents, caregivers and their wards crowd the open green space heading into the Ever’man Community Room. The room fills with children from ages 1 to 5 years who are excited to hear, see, touch, and taste the amazing activities made just for them. The adults in the room enjoy the fresh brewed coffee and tea as their little ones gather for Story Sprouts’ play approach to learning. Story Sprouts has been such a hit with the younger ones, that Ever’man own Story Tellers developed a class for older, some of whom had aged out of the Sprouts program. The new program, Story Seedlings, caters to children from 5-10 years old. Story Seedlings meets the 3rd Monday of each month when the kids prepare their own healthy snack, participate in a story reading, and work together on a community craft. At the heart of these amazing programs are the talented Storytellers, who are all local mothers whose own littles are in the programs. Story Sprouts and Seedlings has done more than bring together parents, caregivers, and children from all over 26 | THE HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE

Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties. It has also brought together 4 of its own Storytellers; Crystal Barrineau, Jennifer Fernandez, Kana Meece, and Jessica French. With their friendship and shared desire to see our youth succeed, these ladies have launched a quickly growing nonprofit group: The Pensacola Children’s Business Fair. The Pensacola Children’s Business Fair focuses on fostering the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders. It stands for the belief children should learn entrepreneurship skills at an early age, which helps develop creativity, communication skills, resilience, financial literacy, and, as a result, self-confidence and self-reliance. Pensacola Children’s Business Fair will host its winter 1 day marketplace November 9th, 2019 at the Palafox Market. The Winter Fair will showcase the creative goods, services, and artwork of local Kidpreneurs between 6-17 years old. Along the way, participants will have access to a vendor support group, kidpreneur workshops, and local community mentors that all help to foster success for the participants. “Part of our mission is to teach kids to create an income for themselves, rather than relying solely on working

for others and building a better relationship with money for the betterment of our community and country” according to Kana Meece. Business skills are taught through direct practice and mentor-ship of local business leaders. Our Kidpreneurs, affectionately known as Pensapreneurs, are encouraged to develop their own brand, build a marketing strategy, and utilize their communication skills to entice potential customers. It’s up to them to make the sale, they are the boss! One frequent question from parent is, “How do I help my child come up with a business idea?” The answer, just ask them! They must create something they are interested in so they maintain interest and their business has a chance to be a true success! It needs to come from them, then they will gain the feeling of accomplishment, ownership, and pride in their work. Parents can be supportive by assisting and monitoring their child’s efforts in a way that isn’t overbearing and allows the child to maintain control of the project. Letting the child take the reins and develop their own plan is what the fair is all about. Parents are often surprised by their child’s drive and abilities! “We are not going to lie, it’s not always easy being a Pensapreneurs parent. Depending on the age of your child, you may have to encourage them to build inventory between school and play,” said Jennifer Fernandez. “You will be the manual labor. Helping to haul gear and equipment, driving them to the fair, and helping keep them pumped up through the whole process. But the point of the fair is that it is up to the Pensaprenuer in the long run. Parents sometimes worry their child may not have enough inventory. The founders of the fair emphasis the importance of pushing the child to follow through with fair with what they have. If they sell out because they did not put in the time in to build inventory, they sit there until the fair hours are over before clean up. This is an important lesson in commitment and that it is sometimes necessary to put in work early to reach a goal. The Storytellers started with the goal of starting a youth movement where children could feel empowerment, independence, creativity, passion and financial freedom. After the inaugural fair this past May, they fell like it was just the start of a new Youth Entrepreneur Community here in Pensacola. The interest in becoming Penspreneurs is growing every day. Everyone is excited to see what the returning and first time Penspreneurs will have at the Winter fair on November 9th, and to see where this vision, which started in the Ever’man Community Room over a story, craft, and a healthy snack, will take the children of our community.

Growing Gratitude in Kids By: Sherry Brubaker, Backyard Bohemian

“Mom, what was war like?” my daughter asked with innocence. Although I left Afghanistan seven years ago, the memories remain fresh. I left for deployment when my oldest daughter was nine months old. As a young 20 year old myself, this was a life-defining moment. I brought back loads of memories and experiences, but there was always one story I told on repeat when people ask about my time in the Army. There in the hot sun of Afghanistan, we are pulling security in a small village. I am wearing heavy equipment that cancels out radio frequencies of potential bombs. I am hot, tired and ready to return to base. The village children are growing increasingly curious of our presence, and finally one little girl musters up the courage to approach me. Through the language barrier, she reaches out and hands me a wedge of lemon. Lemons, and food in general, were scarce in this village. Yet here this little girl was, showing me gratitude and love through the power of food and giving. I felt immense gratitude for this moment. She felt safe, empowered by seeing a woman in an authoritative position, and gracious. Despite her hunger, she still wanted to feed a stranger. My biggest obstacle as a mom has been finding ways to expose my children to real life situations and growing their gratitude. Through the years I have taken all opportunities granted to me to use as learning experiences for both me and my children. They are always willing and receptive to the understanding gratitude and what it feels like.

Sometimes, showing gratitude looked like a cold Thanksgiving evening spent looking for homeless to hand out warm food plates to, with children in tow. Other times, gratitude comes in the form of a cool dip in the pool on a hot summer day. It’s all about being in the moment and understanding the feeling. When we verbally express the communicating feelings to a grateful experience, we help our kids better understand the value of the moment. Incorporating gratitude in everyday living is an essential piece to my happiness. When I pick my daughter up from school, we talk about her day. Before closing the topic, I ask her what her favorite thing was. This gives her a moment to reflect. If you see it and you like it, say it! Gratitude even trickles down to things like toys. Chores are an important element of balance in our home life. Everyone understands the demands of a stay at home mom, and they do their chores to relieve some of that pressure. With chore money they usually want to buy toys. They understand the hard work the family does by chipping in with chores, and they also know how much work went into affording the toy. Growing gratitude in our children can be quite easy. It’s pointing out the beautiful sunset on an evening walk. It’s the bed time kiss. It’s the spoken words of thankfulness.
