s Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg church in Germany, the clanging of his hammer sounded the announcement that something was changing. The Church in 1517 was very different from the Church we know today. Rather than teaching the Bible, Church leaders secured their own power by keeping the Scriptures from the people and teaching their own doctrines instead. But then Luther, under the conviction that the Bible was for everyone, nailed his theses to the church door and set the record straight. This solitary act of bravery was the spark that ignited the Reformation, a historic period of religious power struggle — and incredible revival. The Church leaders of Luther’s day were so against sharing God’s Word with the common people that they even outlawed translating the Bible into common languages. But the reformers’ passion for evangelism was too great to give up. William Tyndale, for example,
smuggled English Bibles into England — and was burned at the stake for it. Other reformers made similarly terrible sacrifices for the Great Commission. And their sacrifices brought the Gospel to thousands of people, changing Western civilization — and the world — forever. This year marks the 500th anniversary of Luther’s heroic act of nailing his 95 Theses to the door, and the Reformation spirit of sharing God’s Word with every person still lives on. It lives on in the EHC pioneer missionaries who strive to reach every home in their countries with the Gospel. And it lives on in you, our friends who walk alongside them through your prayerful support. This Christmas issue of Every Home magazine presents you with opportunities to live out the spirit of the Reformation today. As you read these stories, I pray that God will show you how He would have you give to spread His Word to others. His Gospel is for everyone.

Christ in Christmas CHRISTMAS OUTREACHES
by James Holt
C
hristmas is still a new idea in Zambia. While the Church there has long celebrated Jesus’ birth, the average Zambian knows little about the holiday. Until recently, it wasn’t uncommon for village children to seek out the nearest Westerners on Christmas morning to wish them “Christmas!” — and then follow up with an expectant demand for presents: “Give me Christmas!” But in recent years, this African nation has imported more elements of the foreign holiday. Decorations are hung in grocery stores, Christmas trees are sold along the road, and one might even spot someone wearing a Santa Claus costume in the 85-degree F. heat. But for the most part, friends and families celebrate the day by simply gathering together for a special meal of rice with chicken, pork or goat. Thirty-year-old Edgar Seko* was filled with anticipation for his own family’s special meal as he carried supplies for their Christmas celebration to
4
Lukona village. But he wasn’t planning to celebrate Jesus. “In my language, it is pronounced ‘Chriss-mas,’” Edgar says. “Not ‘Christ-mas.’” Jesus was the furthest thing from Edgar’s mind that day — until he noticed a group of people stop another traveler on the road. He overheard them introduce themselves as Every Home for Christ Zambia and begin to share the Word of God. Edgar walked faster and made sure to avoid eye contact. He didn’t want the EHC pioneer missionaries to ruin his good mood. “I hated to see anyone share the Gospel,” Edgar says. “I thought they were there to talk about sin and stop us from having fun with our friends at Christmas.” To Edgar’s relief, he managed to walk past without being stopped and cheerfully went on his way. But his successful escape was short-lived. When Edgar arrived at home, he was shocked to find a different group of EHC missionaries already there. With a dismayed sigh,

he resigned himself to hearing their message and sat down to listen. “I heard one of them explain to my family about the meaning of Christmas, that it is all about Christ,” Edgar says. “There and then, my eyes were opened to see the word ‘Christ’ in ‘Christmas’!” The EHC team continued sharing God’s Word with Edgar’s family. They explained that Jesus was born to save us, and that we can have a new life through faith in Him. To Edgar’s surprise, his wife, children and two of his wife’s friends chose to give their lives to Jesus that day. Edgar, however, was more hesitant. “I was missing out and had not given my life to Jesus to be saved,” Edgar says. “I wanted to give an excuse to do it another time.” Seeing Edgar’s reluctance, one of the EHC missionaries handed him a piece of gospel literature. It was called “A Slave Who Refused to Be Free.” Intrigued, Edgar accepted the booklet and read it — and he realized that he was refusing to let God save him. “I gave my life to the Lord that day!” Edgar says. “Christmas became Christ–mas to me. I am born again!” That Christmas was different from any Edgar’s family had shared before. It wasn’t about Santa Claus and presents, and it wasn’t even about the special meal they shared. It was about Jesus, God’s gift of love to us, and the new life we all share in Him.

Confiscated from Her Home BIBLES
by Josh Skaggs
S
he took to the streets as soon as she heard they were visiting her village. Iva*, an Orthodox believer, hoped that the visiting pioneer missionaries would have something she needed — something she had lost. Iva’s Bible had been confiscated from her home. She walked down cracked sidewalks, each breath steaming in the December air. In a village of less than 2,000 people, Iva hoped she could find the missionaries in time. Hurrying despite her age, she shuffled down narrow roads, passing by concrete homes with red shingles. She found them. Teams of Every Home for Christ missionaries were visiting homes, sharing the Gospel with the people of Glavinica as part of their Christmas outreaches. Iva greeted them, and then she asked the question that meant everything to her. Do you have a Bible? By the time she reached her late sixties, Iva had lived more than half of her life without the freedom to own a Bible. Bulgaria opened its doors to Christianity in 1989, when the fall of the Iron Curtain made Bibles available for the first time in over 60 years. Because she had been denied one for so long, Iva cherished her Bible. She knew that the freedom to experience God’s Word for herself was a privilege, and she didn’t take it lightly. But now, more than two decades after the Soviet Union collapsed, Iva’s Bible had been taken from her. This time, her government was not to blame — it was the Soviet legacy. In “Socialism and Religion,” an article which laid the groundwork for aggressive atheism in the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin writes, “We demand complete disestablishment of the Church so as to be able to combat the religious fog.” He then calls on Soviet citizens to promote atheism through “atheist propaganda.” Decades have passed since Lenin died and communism left Bulgaria, but a legacy of atheism lingers in Bulgarian culture.

DECEMBER 2017
“People who were born in communist times did not learn anything about God and the Bible,” says Pavel Valkov, National Director of EHC Bulgaria. “Because they don’t have any idea about the Bible, they are not able to tell anything about it to their children.” Every Home for Christ missionaries face this difficulty every time they enter a Bulgarian city or village. According to Pavel, less than half of the people he visits own a Bible. People lack even a basic understanding of God’s Word. Others directly oppose it. Even though Iva’s nation was open to God’s Word, her home was not. With an antagonism against the Bible that is all too familiar to Bulgarian believers, Iva’s son had stolen her Bible and hidden it in a place where she couldn’t find it. Quite possibly, he had thrown it away. When Pavel met Iva, her story did not surprise him. “It is not a new thing, what her son did,” Pavel says. “It happens many times that unbelieving relatives want to stop those who seek God.” Every Home for Christ was happy to restore what Iva had lost. Pavel’s team had brought a box of Bibles for this very purpose — to give God’s Word to those who needed it most. Iva’s son knew the power of the Bible. The communist regime knew the power of the Bible. We know it as well. We’re committed to changing Bulgaria’s legacy by giving the power of God’s Word to expectant believers, and then watching it change their lives. *Name changed for anonymity.

The Best Christmas Gift by Guy Burgo

T
he world’s diverse Christmas traditions are fascinating. In Armenia, Christmas is called Epiphany and celebrated on January 6. And in Italy, people display decorative cribs on December 8 and place figures representing the baby Jesus in them on Christmas Eve. One tradition that seems common to most cultures, however, is the giving of Christmas gifts. But where did this tradition come from? Some say it began before Jesus’ birth with the ancient Roman festival Saturnalia. Others say the example was set by the Magi, who brought Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. But I’ve always thought that giving gifts at Christmas began with John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten
Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (NKJV). In other words, we give gifts to each other in honor of God’s gift to us: His Son. Jesus is the first and greatest Christmas gift, and we celebrate Him by doing our part to give to others each Christmas season. You can give a wonderful gift this Christmas by sharing the love of Jesus with others. Imagine placing the names of those you’ve helped reach with the Gospel under the tree as a gift to God this year. Sharing the Good News of Jesus is the best Christmas gift we can give! If you would like to give toward sharing the Gospel through Every Home for Christ this Christmas, it would be my honor to help.
