“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17,

here’s something invigorating about the word “new.” This month, many of us will extend “Happy New Year” greetings to our friends and loved ones, anticipating that 2017 will be a year of exciting opportunities, greater successes and blessings yet unseen. Others will breathe a sigh of relief that a difficult year is finally over, and they can now look forward to better days. But perhaps the people most grateful for a new beginning are those throughout the world who have discovered that, in Christ, their lives can be made new. In this New Year’s edition of Every Home magazine, we bring you inspiring stories of forgiveness and reconciliation made possible by faith in Christ alone. You’ll rejoice that a husband in Papua New Guinea was freed from his gambling addiction, and his marriage was restored (p. 4). You’ll praise God for the Angolan woman who received Christ and was reunited with her husband (p. 8). And in Argentina, an assaulted EHC pioneer missionary forgave his attacker, now a brother in Christ (p. 14). For these precious souls and millions of others like them, perhaps a more fitting New Year’s greeting would be “Happy New YOU!” Aren’t you thankful that, through Christ, all things can be made new?
A young man gives our workers two thumbs up after they shared Jesus with him.

t started out as a novelty, not an addiction. George Beity, a 46-year-old husband and father of seven, discovered video poker machines and thought they’d be fun to try. The devices were relatively new in his country; the government in Papua New Guinea had only legalized gambling 20 years before. He was drawn in by the lights, the glow and the ability to suddenly make a little extra money with a few taps of his fingers. George had always been drawn to numbers. He was a successful accountant, which is a highly respected profession in Papua New Guinea. His education and career allowed him to provide for his family comfortably. They were happy. He didn’t expect it all to be unraveled by an innocent, little machine with a few friendly pictures of playing cards on the front. At first, it was no big deal. He played a couple of hands with some wins and some losses. But soon, he was always thinking about the machine. He looked for ways to escape
his responsibilities and play one more hand. Before he knew what had happened, gambling became the center of his life. George lost his job, but he was successful and skilled, so he rebounded quickly. Only he also neglected that new job and was fired again. Between jobs, he borrowed money from local loan sharks to feed his addiction. They happily put him in deeper debt. It became a cycle, and by the seventh job he lost, no one was willing to hire him. His wife took their baby and left, leaving George to care for the rest of their children. “The scars of this addiction were becoming obvious for all to see,” George explains. “They were unexpected and sudden. I had no savings and was financially ruined.” He still marvels at how his luck went sour and how dark he felt. “I must admit that suicidal thoughts crossed my mind,” George confesses. George was barely able to provide for his remaining children. They skipped meals and lived

in a small, unsanitary space. “I tried my best to hide the deep emotional wounds inside,” George says — but a jobless accountant in the village attracted gossip. “It is a huge letdown for your immediate family, the village and the community when our educated people are addicted to gambling,” says Aaron Nikkie, the National Director of Every Home for Christ Papua New Guinea. In his darkest hour, George remembered a ministry his brother was involved in called Every Home for Christ. George knew the way his brother’s life had been transformed and thought maybe there was hope for him, too. George’s brother set up a meeting with Aaron. As they walked in a forest near the EHC office, Aaron told George the story of the prodigal son. He shared how this man ran from God and hurt his family, but God still forgave him. “The conversation was about the love of God, the Father, for His children,” Aaron says. “No matter how far we go or how sinful we may be, God loves us.” “This life-changing conversation caused a stir deep within me,” George says. “I felt the prompting of almighty God to offer my professional experience to assist Every Home for Christ.” He wanted to somehow pull his life back together. He knew he would do anything to help this ministry that was transforming lives. He would volunteer his time. He would offer his service. He would do whatever it took to give something to the world rather than leave everything he touched a complete mess. “God was throwing me a survival rope to climb back up to safety,” George explains. “Every Home for Christ was like an intensive care unit for my soul. I was beat up and badly bruised by the world of poker machines and needed help to recover.” Then George’s life began to transform. “I stood with him in fasting and prayer,” Aaron says. “Prayer still moves mountains and transforms lives. results were almost immediate in George’s case.” Of course, George’s wife and children had still been harmed by his years of gambling. “My wife had walked out on me, but the toughest challenge was seeing my innocent children suffer,” George says. He desperately wanted his wife to forgive him. He longed for their family to be restored — for the chance to protect and provide for everyone again. But George’s wife would have nothing to do with him, and he knew it would take something supernatural to put their family back together. “Miracles still happen!” George exclaims as he retells this story. Exactly one month after he began serving Every Home for Christ, he said, “God literally spoke to my wife in a dream.” She was unsure what to make of the dream, but the next morning she had to visit George to see if his life had actually changed. “She shook and trembled after this encounter and decided to return,” George says. She couldn’t believe what she saw. Her husband was transformed, a new man. They finally began knitting their lives back together. “Every Home for Christ assisted us with temporary accommodations, and it is pure joy to be reunited,” George says. He was grateful for his kids, humbled that his wife forgave him and amazed by Aaron’s faithfulness. “They prayed and stood with me in those tough days and weeks,” George says. “I think to see my family reconciled has been a joy for Aaron and his wife, too.” Aaron agrees, “I am so excited not only to see George united with his family, but also to see his passion to serve God in the long term.” For George, this passion comes from knowing there are others like him throughout his country. There are so many souls who are addicted and lost and hurting. He believes there is hope for them too, and he wants to be another voice reaching out to offer the kind of forgiveness and grace that restores lives.

t only 25 years old, Xirena was already on her fourth marriage — and it looked as though even it wouldn’t last much longer. In her area of Angola, couples don’t go to counseling to work out their issues, and they don’t learn to live with unhappy marriages. When there’s A N a problem, they simply move on. “If the woman is not respectful toward her husband, she risks being replaced,” says Sara Antonio, National Director of Every Home for Christ Angola. It had happened to Xirena before. Her family rejected her when she dropped out of school to elope with her first husband, and they blamed her when every subsequent marriage failed just like the first. The truth was that Xirena longed to be loved,

but she feared being controlled. And this fear led her to openly disrespect the men in her life. She fought and shamed them at home, and she fought and shamed them in public. Unwilling to take responsibility for her own disparaging behavior, she had unintentionally driven them away. L A Now, it was happening again. News reached Xirena that her husband, Carlitos, had been seen around the community with other women. In an instant, Xirena was swallowed up by the same fear and heartbreak that had become all too familiar. Another marriage was falling apart. Carlitos stayed away for days at a time, leaving Xirena to cry herself to sleep as she wondered who he was with that night. Soon, Carlitos wasn’t even trying to hide his affairs anymore. He

wanted Xirena to know about them. “He was now doing it in the open so that Xirena would leave his house,” Sara says. “He no longer loved her.” As her lonely nights added up, Xirena grew bitter. She saw men as vultures picking apart the pieces of her heart. But Carlitos was her last chance. If he left her like the others, she wasn’t likely to find a fifth husband to take care of her. She would starve, and her family would say she deserved it. Alone and outcast, Xirena contemplated taking her own life. She had tried in the past. Maybe this time, her despair would be enough to make her go through with it. Xirena anxiously watched the door of her home, hoping Carlitos would come back through it. Then one day, a knock came at that door. To her dismay, it wasn’t Carlitos returning to her. It was three young people her age. Suspicious of these strangers, Xirena
stepped outside and closed the door behind her, making it clear they were not invited in. The visitors were evangelists with Every Home for Christ Angola, and they had come to share the Gospel with Xirena. Immediately, she regretted answering the door. “Most people in Angola perceive Christianity negatively,” Sara says. “They feel it doesn’t give them the immediate answers they need.” For Xirena, the conversation with our workers couldn’t end fast enough. She accepted the gospel messages they gave her and quickly went back inside, relieved to see them move on to the next house. She decided that, if they tried to come back, she would slam the door in their faces. But as Xirena sat, staring anxiously at the door once more, the messages the workers had given her caught her attention. One was called The Power of God www.ehc.org

and the other How to Know God. With no better way to pass her time, she opened one and began to read it. It was a casual decision that proved to have eternal consequences. “After reading the gospel messages, I felt something unusual in my spirit,” Xirena says. “I felt like there was hope somewhere, and I needed that hope.” Xirena saw a phone number written on the back of the messages. The next day, she sent a text message to the number, inviting the EHC evangelists back to her home. The three young people were overjoyed to receive her text. Getting one response was like having a whole world of responses; it was something worth celebrating. Within hours, they were back on Xirena’s doorstep. This time, she opened the door and invited them in. Our evangelists shared the Gospel with Xirena and prayed with her, and she gave her life to Jesus that day. It was like a heavy stone had been removed from Xirena’s heart. She quickly joined an EHC Christ Group in her area and began to grow in her newfound faith. When Carlitos eventually returned home, he found a very different woman awaiting him. Xirena didn’t yell at him, berate him or condemn him as he had come to expect. Instead, she showed him kindness, humility and gentleness. For the first time after a long season, Xirena showed Carlitos love — and it changed their home. “They fell in love again, and this made them rekindle their first days,” Sara says. Xirena even confessed her disrespect to Carlitos, and she asked him to forgive her for the way she had behaved. It was a genuine apology, and it came with no expectation that Carlitos should apologize for his philandering. Xirena was sorry, and her meekness and repentance was unlike anything Carlitos had ever experienced. Baffled by the difference he saw in his wife, Carlitos wondered what had happened to bring about such an unlikely change in her heart. Intrigued, he attended Xirena’s Christ Group with her. There, he heard the Gospel, and he felt the conviction of the Holy Spirit in his heart. Like Xirena, Carlitos also repented and gave his life to Jesus. “Carlitos told Xirena he will never again go for other women,” Sara says. Xirena had been difficult, and Carlitos had cheated. He had wanted to end their marriage, and she had wanted to end her life. But when Xirena met Jesus, everything changed. She became softer, and Carlitos became faithful. Their marriage was saved, and now they’re walking with God together, filled with the hope of a new life. But none of it would have happened if three young evangelists hadn’t left their phone number and a gospel message.

HOW MANY WILL YOU TAKE WITH YOU? by Guy Burgo
Editor’s Note: Guy Burgo is Every Home for Christ’s Stewardship Advisor. He has worked as a consultant to over 100 ministries across the country and has helped more than 2,300 Christian families design their wills.
A
s Christians, our ultimate joy will be to live for eternity in heaven with our wonderful, loving Father. Our primary goal on earth should be to take as many people as possible to heaven with us. Heaven is a physical place that will be more glorious and amazing than we can possibly imagine. Jesus tells us in John 14:1–3 (NKJV): Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. Jesus goes on to say in verse 6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Sometimes we are blessed to be an integral part of that very moment when someone accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Other times, we may be just a small part of that person’s spiritual journey. That could mean anything from providing a kind word or deed to financially supporting a missionary who leads someone to Christ. We all have a part to play in
helping lost souls know the joy of heaven. Have you given thoughtful and prayerful consideration to what your personal harvest will be? The truth is, if you are supporting Every Home for Christ through prayer and finances, you are increasing your personal harvest every day by playing a crucial role in saving lost souls. Today, I want to encourage you to expand your role in the spiritual harvest God is directing and accomplishing through Every Home for Christ. If you have not already done so, would you please prayerfully consider leaving a gift from your estate to Every Home for Christ? By doing so, when you’re in heaven, you’ll continue to bring people with you for many years to come. Naming Every Home for Christ as a beneficiary of a financial account or instrument is the easiest way to accomplish this, because it can be done very simply without changing your will. If you would like to learn more about how you can expand your impact for Christ by leaving a gift from your estate, please contact Debbie Grissett at 1-800-423-5054 or dgrissett@ehc.org.

THE CHOICE A R G E N T I N A
by Kathy Gowler
H
is name is Agustin, and he lives in Argentina. Like most of Every Home for Christ’s global workers, Agustin doesn’t have a lot of money, and he works very hard for what he has. But like all of us, from time to time, Agustin is faced with a difficult choice. Is sharing the Gospel worth it? Should he even continue? After what he’d been through, many people would throw in the towel. But Agustin decided not to, and because of that decision, he witnessed how God can weave the tangled threads of devastation into a beautiful tapestry of grace. It happened late last year when Agustin and several other EHC workers were evangelizing their gang-infested community on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. The team members were fully aware of the danger, but they were committed to sharing the Gospel with the gangs, drug addicts and prostitutes that control their neighborhood. However, what happened that unforgettable night would cause Agustin to question if the risk was worth the reward. The two armed men who attacked the team came out of nowhere. And though the outreach team was taken by surprise, they weren’t that surprised it happened. This kind of thing is common where they live. After being physically assaulted with guns pointed at them, Agustin and his team relinquished the little money they had, their cell phones and the keys to their van. Then they stood by helplessly as the thieves drove away, leaving them stranded in an extremely dangerous area. Though traumatized and discouraged, Agustin thanked God for sparing their lives and prayed that the van, along with the Bibles and the gospel literature that were in it, would be recovered. The van was found a short time later. It had been set on fire so that no fingerprints could be found. But it was what they saw on the ground beside the gutted van that brought Agustin and his team to tears. There, completely unscathed, were the boxes of Bibles and gospel messages. At that moment, Agustin knew what his decision must be.

1 A high security prison in Argentina. 2 Rino Bello, EHC National Director of Argentina, prays for God’s grace and love to touch an inmate. 3 Members of a Christ Group held in an Argentinean prison listen as God’s Word is shared.
God not only protected his life and the lives of his team members, but He also protected the ministry tools they depend on to lead broken lives to Him. Van or no van, Agustin would continue to spread the Gospel in his community of lost and desperate souls. Meanwhile, other workers with Every Home for Christ Argentina were doing a mighty work evangelizing inmates at a Buenos Aires prison. When Agustin heard about it, he was quick to get on board. He would spend the rest of his life sharing the message of forgiveness and grace wherever he could, whether on the streets of Buenos Aires or behind its prison bars. Several months later, Agustin was at the prison working with inmates who had accepted Christ through the EHC outreaches there, and one of them overheard him share the story of the stolen van. When Agustin came to the part about the Bibles and gospel literature surviving, the inmate knew he had to say something.
3 “It was me,” he confessed to Agustin. “I and one of the other inmates in this prison were the ones who attacked you and stole your van.” Agustin stood with his mouth open as the memory of that horrible night flooded his mind. Now — just a few months later — he was standing face to face with one of the perpetrators. The inmate tearfully asked Agustin to forgive him, explaining that, since they’d been imprisoned, he and his accomplice had both accepted Christ and turned from their lives of crime. At that moment, Agustin was faced with another choice: Could he forgive the men who assaulted him, stole his van and destroyed it? Then he remembered the Bibles and gospel literature that God had miraculously spared. Those same printed messages were taken to the prison and transformed the lives of the criminals who stole them. Once again, Agustin knew what his decision would be. He chose to forgive.
“Now — just a few months later — he was standing face to face with one of the perpetrators.”
