Welcome
Hello again and welcome to our new season brochure. Everyone at the Everyman Theatre has worked extremely hard to bring as many shows to Gloucestershire as possible while still managing the real impact Covid continues to have on our industry. We’ve been fortunate that most of our productions have carried on and are sympathetic to those who have missed out on performances due to cancellations. We have tried to manage each situation as quickly and professionally as possible. The image above is from the closing moments of Stand Up For Ukraine at the Everyman Theatre on Saturday, the 2nd of April. We co-produced the performance with the Barn Theatre, Cirencester, and we’re delighted to announce that we raised over £50,000 to support the DEC appeal for Ukraine and the fine work of two Gloucestershire organisations supporting refugees. For many years, we have worked closely with Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (GARAS), and Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees. We hope that you will also support their work. To continue this work, we are supporting another special event that will take place on the 23rd of June. The Walk, which took place last summer, was a project to highlight the plight of displaced children everywhere, focusing on those affected by the ongoing conflict in Syria. As part of the Walk, a 3.5-metre tall puppet named Amal travelled from the Syrian border to Manchester
to represent the treacherous journey undertaken by displaced children. We’re pleased to welcome Amal to Cheltenham this summer as she travels back from Manchester to Folkstone. Further information on this project will be available on everymantheatre.org.uk and via our social media channels. Shifting our focus back to performances, I’m happy to be hosting the world premiere of Great British Bake Off The Musical (page 16) this July. The performances will be the culmination of four years of hard work. They will feature a cast of outstanding West End performers in a brand-new, never before seen musical comedy, celebrating the fantastic television programme we all know and love. The show will follow the backstage stories of 8 unique contestants, the hilarious presenters and two iconic judges. It will be a great big slice of musical heaven for the entire family. I genuinely hope you find something in the new season to pique your interest and that you make a visit (or five) to the theatre over the coming months. Thank you for your continued support, and we’ll be here to make your nights out memorable.

T I C K E T S S E L L I N G FA S T
The international smash hit musical makes its royal return to the Everyman Theatre! Multi award-winning, with a spectacularly successful sound-track storming charts across the globe, this sell-out Tudor takeoff has ‘an incredibly strong and powerful message. Boundary-pushing, genreredefining’ (The Australian) and is ‘pure entertainment’ (The New York Times). From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, the six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic to tell their tales, remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into an 80-minute celebration of 21st century girl power. These Queens may have green sleeves but their lipstick is rebellious red. Think you know the rhyme, think again...

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice STARRING SHOBNA GULATI, IAN KELSEY & CHRISTINA BIANCO
The Olivier Award-Winning comedy-drama from Jim Cartwright, which has become one of Britain’s greatest modern plays, and a smash-hit film starring Jane Horrocks and Michael Caine, is coming to the Everyman Theatre for the first time ever! Meet Little Voice and Mari Hoff. A mother and daughter central to this Northern fairy-tale’s heart, but as far apart in character as can be. Little Voice leads a quiet and unassuming life, seeking companionship and joy from music’s most iconic singers, whilst Mari prefers the sound of her own voice, indulging in a life of booze, cheap thrills and seedy men. Left to her own devices, Little Voice starts to embody the famous divas she plays on repeat, swapping the grey backstreets of Northern England for the bright lights of Hollywood and Broadway, all from the safety of her bedroom. When Mari starts dating small-time club owner Ray Say, LV’s astonishing impersonations of Shirley Bassey, Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland, to name a few, are thrust into the spotlight. Transformed and sensational, Little Voice might be Ray’s only chance to hit the big time, but what will the consequences be for mother and daughter?
Desk Award Nominee Christina Bianco, as Little Voice, Cartwright’s timeless and iconic tale explores the highs and the lows of small-town dreams, family rivalry and finding your voice in a noisy world. With humour, heart and countless powerhouse ballads all performed live on stage, featuring music from Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey, Billie Holliday and many more, this life-affirming production will rouse even the weariest of souls.
Starring TV favourite Shobna Gulati (Coronation Street, Dinnerladies, Loose Women), British soap royalty Ian Kelsey (Emmerdale, Casualty) and ‘the girl of a thousand voices’ and two-time Drama

Spike KARL SYDOW, TRADEMARK FILMS AND ANTHOLOGY THEATRE PRESENT THE WATERMILL THEATRE PRODUCTION BY IAN HISLOP AND NICK NEWMAN
“I’m not acting crazy. I’m the genuine article.” An absurdly funny new play by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman (The Wipers Times, Trial By Laughter, A Bunch of Amateurs) that delves into the inner workings of one of our most unique and brilliantly irreverent comedy minds.
It’s the booming fifties, and Britain is in the clutches of Goon mania as men, women and children across the country scramble to get their ear to a wireless for another instalment of The Goon Show. While Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers get down to the serious business of becoming overnight celebrities, fellow Goon and chief writer Spike finds himself pushing the boundaries of comedy, and testing the patience of the BBC. Will Spike’s dogged obsession with finding the funny elevate The Goons to soaring new heights, or will the whole thing come crashing down with the stroke of a potato peeler?

AND NICHOLAS WOODESON
From the writer of the Academy Awardwinning Bohemian Rhapsody, Darkest Hour, and The Theory of Everything, comes the play that sparked a major motion picture. Nine years ago, Pope Benedict XVI stunned the world by resigning, the first Pope in 700 years to do so. What drove this archconservative to break with sacred tradition and make way for a one-time tango club bouncer, football-loving reformer with the common touch to become Pope Francis, one of most powerful men on earth? Starring Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones, The Crown, Endeavour) and Nicholas Woodeson (Baptiste, The Death of Stalin, The Danish Girl) this gripping new play from Anthony McCarten premiered at Royal & Derngate, Northampton in 2019 and was adapted into the multi-award-

Directed by James Dacre (2020 Olivier Award nominated Our Lady of Kibeho) with original music by Grammy and BRIT Award-winning composer Anne Dudley. The Lavender Hill Mob STARRING MILES JUPP AND JUSTIN EDWARDS
A brand new, hilarious adaptation of the classic Ealing Comedy The Lavender Hill Mob will be opening in Cheltenham prior to a national tour! Come and see one of the nation’s favourite films brought to life on stage in a brand new adaptation by the Olivier-nominated playwright Phil Porter, directed by Tony and Olivier-nominated Jeremy Sams and starring Miles Jupp (The Thick of It, Rev, The Durrells, Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?) and Justin Edwards (The Thick of It, Black Books, Veep, Father Brown). This side-splittingly funny, fast-paced comedy tells the story of Henry Holland, an unassuming bank clerk who dreams of stealing the gold bullions he transports across London each day.

The Everyvoice Community Choir Winter Concert
Harry Hill: Pedigree Fun!
Milton Jones in Milton: Impossible
The Everyvoice Community Choir is excited to be returning to its spiritual home on the Everyman Theatre’s historic main stage.
Harry is back with brandnew amazing jokes in an all-singing, all-dancing one-man spectacular.
One man. One Mission. Is it possible? No, not really.
The choirs will be performing a very special selection of songs from a wide variety of genres and musical eras. With members ranging in age from 5 to 93 the choirs will be providing the audience with a wonderful evening of entertainment and song.
Audiences will meet Harry’s new baby elephant, Sarah, and Ian, The Information Worm.
Milton reveals the truth about being an international spy, before being given a disappointing new identity which forced him to appear on Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo. But this is also a love story with the twist, or even a really bad sprain.
Harry will also be joined by Stouffer the Cat (his famous sidekick) who commented “what can I tell you? When Harry calls you say yes – end of!”
Just gloriously daft nonsense or is there a deeper meaning? Every man has his price. Sainsburys, where good food costs less.

The Snow Queen
This is the story of a girl called Laura, and a place called Lark Rise…
Gerda and Kai aren’t just friends - they’re best friends!
Surrounded by golden Cotswold cornfields, the lives of this characterful community are spun out. Laura Timmins couldn’t be more rooted in her humble home, but the books she loves talk of far-off places and opportunities beyond her wildest dreams.
Every day, they hop across the roof tops to play together and sing their favourite song.
Not to be confined by expectation, she prepares to take flight. As the seasons move in a circle, Laura experiences the vibrancy of change and the moments of heartache in a life well lived. Join Hammerpuzzle for a brand-new adaptation of Flora Thompson’s classic – a story of cherished memories, finding your wings and the threads that bind us to home.
But as the snow falls on the frozen ground, a little bit of Kai’s heart seems to get lost in the frost. It’s up to Gerda to bring him home. Join Gerda on a magical adventure to discover the world of The Snow Queen, the enduring love of friendship and how we can help each other find the light in the dark. The Slow Songs Make Me Sad
Shakespeare’s Fool
Jazz in the Studio Theatre
A rollicking night of cabaret storytelling about post-natal depression?!
William ‘Cavaliero’ Kempe was one of the finest performers of the Elizabethan age...until he fell out with Will ‘git-face’ Shakespeare.
Cheltenham Jazz returns to the Everyman’s Irving Studio Theatre with an all-new series of amazing concerts.
Ten years ago, Chloe started writing a show. It had a clown, and songs, and something about a grand piano. But then she had kids, life got in the way and that show never quite made it through. Now she’s a decade older, Chloe’s decided she’s going to make her comeback and finish it off. With a cheeky glint in its eye and a steely determination to talk about all the things you’re meant to keep quiet, The Slow Songs Make Me Sad blends together hilarious clowning heartfelt storytelling and raucous cello songs.
Kempe died alone and poverty stricken, not very far from the original Globe Theatre, a world away from his former life having supposedly originated some of literature’s best-known characters, including Bottom, Dogberry, and Falstaff. Join Will ‘Cavaliero’ Kempe as he gives his final performance to an audience of a mouse and a marrote and tells us what really happened between him and William Shakespeare. Joe has always been a nerd. In his teens, he hid it. In his twenties, he owned it.
A wide selection of companies, community groups, and students will be performing unique, varied shows and delivering workshops in Stroud venues over a jampacked weekend. Drama, comedies, family shows, stand up, puppetry, scratch performances and much more. Full programme to be announced on The Everyman Theatre website in due course. Tickets will be available through The Everyman box office.
‘A perfect piece of theatre, more than a hint of Tarantino and Lynch’ Fictionmaker. ‘A kind of homespun Fargo with more theatrical flair’ Edfringe Review A psychological thriller from the team behind Communicate (‘A beautiful tapestry about life’ Oldham Reporter).
Now in his thirties, Joe is still obsessed with Nintendo, Star Wars, and A Muppets Christmas Carol. But he’s started to notice something about the way certain fans are behaving - something unsettling. When Joe finds himself alone, in his old room, sorting through his old things, he finds an old video tape, long forgotten. He dusts off the VCR, presses play…and something strange starts to happen!
Written by award nominated Jeremy Fletcher, whose work has been performed on Sky TV (Fest Live) and has toured nationally.
Fanboy is a love-hate letter to pop culture and nostalgia. Award-winning writer-performer Joe Sellman-Leava (Fringe First, Labels 2015) explores our relationship to our past and future selves and asks why his generation is so obsessed with its childhood.

BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ Presents:
Johnny Coppin
Unknown
Hauntings
Johnny’s effortless vocals have graced the folk-scene since the emergence of Decameron in the early 1970s. An experienced solo performer, he is a talented songwriter and a fine interpretative singer.
A play about homelessness by Dougie Blaxland.
An evening of three chilling ghost stories by M.R. James and E.F. Benson.
Johnny has recorded over fourteen albums including The Winding Stair, Borderland, Edge of Day with writer Laurie Lee, The Gloucestershire Collection, and his latest album River of Dreams released early in 2022. There’ll be songs from the new album, and from Gloucestershire and beyond. Playing guitar and piano, his songs are always melodic and evocative.
In just two years from 2017 to 2019, more than 800 people died living and sleeping rough on the streets of the UK – a significant number of them have never been identified or named. Unknown is a verbatim play that dramatizes the tragic but true story of one young person’s journey from an abusing childhood to life on the streets of Bath – one of the most affluent cities in the UK. Supported by The Arts Council and The Big Issue, Uknown has been written by Dougie Blaxland with the assistance of six people who have recent experience of homelessness: Sammy Clark, Nathan Dempster, Ian Duff, Paul Jones, Lloyd Rusdale and Anthony Williams.
After sell-out runs at the 2011, 2015 and 2016 Edinburgh Festivals and throughout the UK with the award-winning shows The Rape of Lucrece, Wilde Without the Boy / The Ballad of Reading Gaol, and Night Terrors, Gerard Logan (Olivier Nominee – RSC) is now touring a new solo show, Hauntings. From E.F. BENSON, famed for his Mapp and Lucia comic novels, comes Naboth’s Vineyard - in which just desserts are meted out to an unscrupulous lawyer, and The Hanging of Alfred Wadham - in which the forces of the devil test a man of faith to his limits.
PRESENTED BY The Big Issue AND RoughHouse Theatre
From the acknowledged master of the ghost story genre, M.R. JAMES, comes, Oh, Whistle and I’ll Come to You, My Lad - in which a medieval spirit strikes terrorizes an arrogant professor.
