Welcome

Welcome to another new season of spectacular productions at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham. Although the year has started very wet outside, it has been warm and sunny inside the theatre where our very own production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream has delighted audiences both here, and on tour across the country. While playing to sold-out audiences, Tweedy, who took on the role of Bottom, has proved once again that he is not only a great comedic talent, but a very versatile actor as well. Thank you to everyone who came to the show for your enthusiasm and positive response to our production and congratulations to our Creative Director Paul Milton, and his entire team, for a job very well done.

We are looking forward to hosting the ever popular The 39 Steps in the new season along with other sure-fire audience pleasers such as Cluedo2, Birdsong, Jesus Christ Superstar and Hairspray. Rounding out our line-up will be a new stage version of Drop The Dead Donkey, featuring the original television cast, and a special anniversary production of the hit Irish comedy Stones In His Pockets. And as ever, Tweedy and our spectacular pantomime team will be back for an all-new round of holiday hi-jinx

in Aladdin. Tickets are selling fast so make sure to get yours now. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind you of the many worthwhile projects that the Everyman Theatre’s Education and Community team is responsible for. Our amazing team of practitioners works with eight youth theatre groups, five diverse choirs, dancenclasses, Gloucestershire’s refugee communities and many other vulnerable groups throughout the county. We are grateful to Arts Council England for their support of these projects and to our sponsors and donors who make this work possible. It is our goal to expand on what is already a tremendous amount of work and we need your help to accomplish this mission. If you would like to learn more about how you can help us achieve these goals please contact Francesa Goddard on francesca.goddard@everymantheatre.org.uk.

I wish you all a healthy and happy spring and summer and hope to see you at the theatre soon.

Sincerely,

Eight unruly teenagers burst into adulthood with the best grades their school has ever seen, but their sights are set on something higher: to study at the most famous academic institutions in the world - Oxford and Cambridge.

But their teachers can’t agree how best to tutor them. There’s Hector, the maverick English teacher who believes in culture for its own sake; Irwin - the shrewd supply teacher full of soundbites; Felix - the headmaster obsessed with league tables and Mrs Lintott - the History teacher who thinks her colleagues are all fools.

The History Boys follows this bright bunch of boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university, lifting the lid on staffroom rivalries and the anarchy of adolescence.

This timely revival, directed by Seán Linnen, asks what is the purpose of education? And who is it for?

Floella Benjamin’s Coming to England

'Floella Benjamin’s cherished novel is a musical message of positivity’ WhatsOnStage

An inspirational story of hope, determination and triumph

Floella Benjamin’s award-winning and iconic book Coming to England comes to life in this joyful stage adapation.

Much loved by children and families, Coming to England tells Floella’s own story of emigrating to England as a child.

Aged just 10, she and her siblings left Trinidad and sailed alone to join their parents. But Floella’s excitement for her new life in England is short-lived, with her family subjected to racism and intolerance in 1960s’ London.

Guided by her mother, and working twice as hard as her classmates, Coming to England tells the story of how a young Floella overcame adversity and grew to become Baroness Benjamin of Beckenham.

Adapted for the stage by David Wood (“the national children’s dramatist” – The Times) this vibrant and energetic musical is the perfect entertainment for the whole family.

Ruby Wax: I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was Milton Jones: HA!MILTON

After a complete sell-out first run in 2023, Ruby Wax's rawest, darkest, funniest and most compelling stage show yet announces brand new dates for 2024, thanks to enormous demand.

“The original idea behind this show was based on the extreme journeys that I wanted to take in order to find an antidote to living a frazzled life. Along the way I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness – the stuff we’re all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution. Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for.”

This is not a musical. Milton Jones is tone deaf and has no sense of rhythm, but at least he doesn’t make a song and dance about it.

He has more important things to discuss. Like giraffes…and there’s a bit about tomatoes.

You might know him from Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo or Radio 4. Or that time he stood for the Scottish National Party, fought a hard campaign, but in the end had to respect the wishes of the people of Cardiff.

A whole new show of daftness. You know it makes sense.

Clarice Cliff was an extraordinary woman. Her striking, colourful and innovative designs have made her a household name.

In May 2003 one of her most famous pieces was sold at Christie’s for almost forty thousand pounds.

Her vibrant and joyful designs represented the new modern spirit of the 1930’s for women and the play charts her rise from humble workingclass beginnings to art director of a famous commercial firm, but her private life concealed a heart wrenching secret which could have ruined her.

In this humourous, multi-role playing adaptation, Hotbuckle invites us to enter the world of The Bennets. From headstrong Elizabeth to proud Mr Darcy, rich characterisations abound as we meet five sisters who deal with marriage, morality and misconceptions in unique Hotbuckle style. Full of invention and story-telling at its finest, this is Jane Austen as you’ve never experienced her before, so, Hotbuckle up, for the carriage ride of your life!

Our Little HourThe Walter Tull Story

Philip Douch reads his own short stories for grown-ups (16+). Disarmingly simple. Beautifully crafted. Expertly delivered. And funny too.

After last year’s sell-out show Philip brings us a new selection of tales – warm and witty, sometimes just a little suggestive and sometimes gently moving.

Also previously seen at The Everyman as Eddie The Eagle’s Dad in Fly Eddie Fly, Philip has read at summer festivals, on the back of a land rover and at the Cheltenham Literature Festival (oh, and at a Pirates Party…).

The inspirational story of the legendary pioneering hero –Walter Tull – is brought to the stage in a new musical.

This profoundly moving new work explores how Walter Tull - grandson of a Barbadian slaveorphaned at eight years old rose to prominence against all odds. The first black footballer to play at the highest level of the domestic game in the UK he went on to achieve yet another historic breakthrough as the first man of his heritage to be commissioned as an Officer in the British Army.

Found at the corner of Goodge Street: a goose and a black felt hat…

The great mind of Sherlock Holmes can find no time to rest, even at Christmas. Join Holmes and Watson on a riotous goose chase around wintery London. Can the infamous duo connect the dots between a lost hat at one end of town and a rifled jewel case at the other - or can you crack the case first?

This fast paced new adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's beloved Detective is the perfect festive brainteaser, brought to you by award-winning theatre company, Black Hound Productions.

The Elves and The Shoemaker

For children aged 3 – 7. Are you looking for a dose of Christmas magic for you and your family?

In this new adaptation of the classic tale, a lonely shoemaker gets more than they wished for as two cheeky, but very helpful, elves take over their shop. With Christmas closing in they desperately need to sell more shoes… Late at night, using needles, thread, leather and a dusting of magic the Elves create the most wonderful shoes. But who's going to buy cowboy boots in this tiny town?

Step into a pair of elf sized clogs for an adventure of epic proportions. Fill your boots with foot stomping songs, silliness and festive magic.
