Welcome
The
Welcome to 2025 and another exciting season packed with entertainment at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham. We’ve just drawn the curtain on our pantomime Aladdin, which once again played to packed houses, welcoming over 42,000 holiday revellers and receiving rave reviews. This year, we supported Cheltenham Open Door as our pantomime charity and raised almost £20,000. Thank you to everyone for their donations toward this vital service for the citizens of Gloucestershire.
Looking ahead at the new season, there are so many highlights that it’s hard to choose just a few for you. I am delighted that we have secured a week of Martin Shaw’s acclaimed star turn in A Man For All Seasons (page 6). We are also pleased to have the work of Terence Rattigan gracing the Everyman’s stage once again when we present a double bill of his work starring Nathanial Parker and Dame Siân Phillips (page 4). The dramatic highlights continue in April when we present The National Theatre production of Alan Bleasdale’s Boys From The Blackstuff (page 20) and a new stage adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express (page 28).
Musical theatre fans will not be disappointed as the new season showcases some of the most amazing singers and dancers in productions such as Dear Evan Hansen (page 30), The Rocky Horror Show (page 8) and the award-winning hit musical Bat Out of Hell (page 18) showcasing the greatest hits of Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf. We’ll also be welcoming the return of Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers (page 50), Matthew Bourne’s mesmerising
The Midnight Bell (page 32) and a brand-new production of Friends – The Musical Parody (page 48). Tickets are sure to sell fast, so don’t delay.
We’re very proud of the work we do with communities throughout Gloucestershire. In addition to Arts Council England and Cheltenham Borough Council’s support, most of the income needed to provide these valuable services is provided by the money you help us raise through our ticket sales. We plan to expand this work in the new year and are currently working on plans to open a brand-new space. This will enable us to deliver more work for children, young adults, and community groups. We hope to provide more news about this exciting development very soon.
In the meantime, I would like to wish you a belated Happy New Year and thank you all for your support. I would also like to thank the incredible staff at the theatre, who work so hard to deliver the best experience possible, and our Board, who take so much time to offer their professional advice and support to me and our management team.
Sincerely,
Mark Goucher, Chief Executive

Table Number Seven and The Browning Version
Summer, 1954.
The atmosphere at The Beauregard Private Hotel, Bournemouth, is marked by a blend of repressed emotions and post-war gentility. Each of the staff and guests has their own reason for seeking the solace of quiet anonymity, but trying to hide from the social and cultural change sweeping over the country is proving impossible.
Meanwhile, in the heart of the Midlands, the end of the school term brings to a climax the intrigues, deceptions and lies in the lives of its teachers. The ensuing implosion of classicist Andrew Crocker Harris’s career triggers the collapse of his marriage.
Mon 3 – Sat 8 Feb
Britain is changing. Nothing will ever be the same again.
Terence Rattigan’s one act masterpieces Table Number Seven (from Separate Tables) and The Browning Version are paired for the first time, capturing one quietly momentous evening seventy years ago.

Directed by Olivier and UK Theatre Award winner James Dacre, an ensemble cast will perform both plays, led by Olivier Award winner Nathaniel Parker and BAFTA winner Dame Siân Phillips.

A Man For All Seasons
The greatest, most powerful and dangerous figures who shaped English history are brought vividly to life in Robert Bolt’s award-winning play.
Martin Shaw stars as Sir Thomas More – scholar, ambassador, Lord Chancellor and friend to King Henry VIII. Above all, he is a man of integrity, loved by the common people and his own family. When Henry demands a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, clearing the way for him to marry Anne Boleyn, the staunchly Catholic Thomas is forced to choose between his loyalty and his own conscience, committing an incredible act of defiance for which he eventually pays the ultimate price…
One of the UK’s best-loved actors on stage and screen, Martin Shaw is known to millions for his television roles in Judge John Deed, Inspector George Gently and The Professionals. His recent West End stage appearances include Hobson’s Choice, The Best Man and Twelve Angry Men.
Jonathan Church’s directorial credits include a ten year period as artistic director of Chichester Festival Theatre. He last directed Martin Shaw in the acclaimed West End transfer of Hobson’s Choice during his time as Artistic Director of the Theatre Royal Bath’s Summer Season.
'The story is a gripping one… Martin Shaw is superb, playing More with both gravitas and a lightness of touch’

THE WEST END & BROADWAY SMASH HIT
The Shark Is Broken
FADE IN: The open ocean, 1974. Filming is delayed…again.
The lead actors - theatre veteran Robert Shaw and young Hollywood hotshots Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider - are crammed into a too-small boat, entirely at the mercy of foul weather and a faulty mechanical co-star. Alcohol flows, egos collide, and tempers flare on a chaotic voyage that just might lead to cinematic magic…if it doesn’t sink them all.
Step aboard the Orca and into The Shark Is Broken, a 'profound dive behind the scenes of the making of Jaws' (****The Daily Telegraph). This Olivier Award-nominated new play is 'hilariously brilliant and pure genius' (***** The Sunday Express) and stars Ian Shaw (War Horse, Common) as his father, Robert Shaw.
The Shark Is Broken celebrates movie history and peeks at the choppy waters behind Hollywood’s first blockbuster. Short tempers. Short circuits. 95 minutes, no intermission. Tue 22 - Sat 26 Apr

is amongst her very best. Gripping, tense and masterfully cryptic, this brand-new production is a deliciously thrilling ride and an ingenious murder mystery, guaranteed to keep you guessing until the end of the line.

What follows is a madcap medley of impromptu games and spontaneous solutions as the desperate director does his best to keep this faithful production going. But with stage whiskey being swapped, off-the-cuff auditions being held and muffins being eaten (no matter what state they’re in), there’s just no telling what this unique

version of The Importance of Being Earnest is going to throw up. Especially when more audience members are drafted in to replace an ever-thinning cast… With the script ripped up and rewritten, can the show reach its fabulous finale, just as Oscar Wilde intended?
This one-of-a-kind comedy sensation is completely different, completely chaotic, and completely Wilde every single night. And who knows, you might even become a star yourself! Guaranteed to have you laughing whether you’re sitting in the audience… or performing onstage …Earnest? is perfect for fans of The Play That Goes Wrong and Noises Off!
By Royal Appointment
The late Queen Elizabeth II was famous for her discretion. She never said anything in public that could ruffle the lightest of feathers. But she had one way of expressing what she really thought – through her wardrobe.
By Royal Appointment is a funny, poignant and celebratory new play about the kind of power that only a Queen can wield – she charms the world through coats and admonishes her family through a carefully chosen hat. But the Queen herself is uninterested in fashion, her look is managed by her Designer, her Milliner and most powerful of all, her Dresser who was a working-class girl who goes from advising the Queen on the colour of her lipsticks to the real power behind the throne. But the Dresser, like all royal favourites is living on borrowed time.
By Royal Appointment is a behind the scenes peek into the world of our most popular monarch and the image she presented to the world.
Starring national treasure Anne Reid as The Queen and star of stage and screen Caroline Quentin as The Dresser.
The play is written by Daisy Goodwin who created the hit ITV series Victoria and directed by former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, Dominic Dromgoole.

Gruoch is a feminist, myth-centred examination of the bereaved and abused girl who became Lady Macbeth as an act of revenge for the death of her father.
She did indeed manipulate Macbeth to kill Duncan, but not through vaulting ambition... this "icon of evil" may be the power behind the throne, but as the only woman left alive, her power is used to avenge.
A new solo performance, written by David Calcutt and performed by award-winning actor Caroline Burns Cooke.

The true story of the author of The Midnight Bell.
