Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham Brochure September 2024

Page 1

Welcome

Welcome back to another new season at the Everyman Theatre. We hope you enjoy a fantastic selection of new performances this autumn, including our ever-popular pantomime. Our team has worked hard to get the best shows possible, and we hope you find many productions to enjoy.

This past summer the theatre was closed for two weeks in order to carry out important maintenance work. During this time our technical team, with the help of some of Gloucestershire’s finest contractors have undertaken extensive work throughout the building to make sure the theatre is safe for our staff, visiting companies and especially our guests. I would like to say a big thank you to our entire team for your valuable work which often goes unnoticed.

I am delighted to announce that we will be producing a brand-new musical by Ben Elton based on the life of one of the world’s first supermodels – TWIGGY. This show started life in London and we’ll now be premiering the production at the Everyman prior to a nationwide tour. The musical is a joyous celebration, tracing Twiggy’s roots from a leafy suburb to the fashion capitals of the world and features some of the greatest music from the 60s and 70s. We look forward to welcoming audiences, as well as Ben Elton and Twiggy to the very first performance of this spectacular new show!

This autumn we also look forward to announcing some very exciting plans for a new hub for our renowned Education and Community work. As local authority funding gets tighter, the role that the theatre plays in supporting children and young people, and vulnerable adults throughout Gloucestershire becomes ever more important. We will soon be able to offer even more of this work in our new building and we look forward to having you join us in our enthusiasm and welcome you to our new facility.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for your support. We are aware that things don’t always go to plan here but I am grateful for the letters and correspondence we receive from people who are complimentary toward our staff and the way we look after our theatre guests. We strive to make everyone’s visit to the Everyman the best possible experience and look forward to seeing you at the theatre very soon.

Sincerely,

@EverymanTheatreCheltenham

Camera! Action! The 25th Anniversary Revival of the Hit Irish Comedy

Tue 17 – Sat 21 Sept

Evenings: Tue – Sat 7.30pm

Matinees: Thu, Sat 2pm

HOLLYWOOD is coming to the Everyman Theatre…But what happens when two Irish extras become the stars?!

An authentic rediscovery of the worldwide phenomenon, Stones in His Pockets, capturing the magic of the original with the thrill of new stagecraft.

Set in rural Ireland , a small village is turned upside down by the arrival of a Hollywood studio to film the latest historical blockbuster. Told through the eyes of local lads Charlie Conlon and Jake Quinn, who are employed as extras, it soon becomes clear that Tinseltown’s romanticised dream of Ireland is a long way from reality…

Directed by Matthew McElhinney, son of the play’s writer and original director, this new production brings a fresh take on the often hysterically funny, thought-provoking and witty comedy, which has won numerous awards including both the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best New Comedy, as well as three Tony nominations on Broadway. Stones in his Pockets ran for four years in the West End and has delighted audiences around the world.

The History Boys

A-Level results day. Cutler’s Grammar School. 1980s Sheffield.

Eight unruly teenagers burst into adulthood with the best grades their school has ever seen, but their sights are set on something higher: to study at the most famous academic institutions in the world - Oxford and Cambridge.

But their teachers can’t agree how best to tutor them. There’s Hector, the maverick English teacher who believes in culture for its own sake; Irwin - the shrewd supply teacher full of soundbites; Felix - the headmaster obsessed with league tables and Mrs Lintott - the History teacher who thinks her colleagues are all fools.

The History Boys follows this bright bunch of boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university, lifting the lid on staffroom rivalries and the anarchy of adolescence.

This timely revival, directed by Seán Linnen, asks what is the purpose of education? And who is it for?

Can a vegetarian get a job as a Beefeater? If beauty is relative, why are all my relatives ugly? If an Eskimo has a housewarming party, will his igloo melt? Why is it that dead people get to ride in such posh cars? If a nudist spilt beetroot soup in his lap, would he have a stain on his character? And why don’t chicken breasts have nipples?

Then this is the show for you!

Table Number Seven and The Browning Version

Summer, 1954.

The atmosphere at The Beauregard Private Hotel, Bournemouth, is marked by a blend of repressed emotions and post-war gentility. Each of the staff and guests has their own reason for seeking the solace of quiet anonymity, but trying to hide from the social and cultural change sweeping over the country is proving impossible.

Meanwhile, in the heart of the Midlands, the end of the school term brings to a climax the intrigues, deceptions and lies in the lives of its teachers. The ensuing implosion of classicist Andrew Crocker Harris’s career triggers the collapse of his marriage.

Britain is changing. Nothing will ever be the same again.

Terence Rattigan’s one act masterpieces Table Number Seven (from Separate Tables) and The Browning Version are paired for the first time, capturing one quietly momentous evening seventy years ago.

Together, they confirm Rattigan as one of the great twentieth century chroniclers of the paradoxes of the human heart.

Directed by Olivier and UK Theatre Award winner James Dacre, an ensemble cast will perform both plays, led by Olivier Award winner Nathaniel Parker and BAFTA winner Dame Siân Phillips.

A Man For All Seasons

The greatest, most powerful and dangerous figures who shaped English history are brought vividly to life in Robert Bolt’s award-winning play.

Martin Shaw stars as Sir Thomas More – scholar, ambassador, Lord Chancellor and friend to King Henry VIII. Above all, he is a man of integrity, loved by the common people and his own family.

When Henry demands a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, clearing the way for him to marry Anne Boleyn, the staunchly Catholic Thomas is forced to choose between his loyalty and his own conscience, committing an incredible act of defiance for which he eventually pays the ultimate price…

One of the UK’s best-loved actors on stage and screen, Martin Shaw is known to millions for his television roles in Judge John Deed, Inspector George Gently and The Professionals. His recent West End stage appearances include Hobson’s Choice, The Best Man and Twelve Angry Men

Jonathan Church’s directorial credits include a ten year period as artistic director of Chichester Festival Theatre. He last directed Martin Shaw in the acclaimed West End transfer of Hobson’s Choice during his time as Artistic Director of the Theatre Royal Bath’s Summer Season.
