FEB - SEPTEMBER 2022

Looking Forward To A New Year I am very excited to, once again, be able to present a new season of work here at the Everyman Theatre and reflect on what we’ve been able to achieve in another tumultuous year for all of us. I would like to sincerely thank those who have supported us through our various youth theatre activities, community outreach programmes and, of course, the productions we’ve hosted in our auditoria. Thanks to the hard work of so many staff members, cast and crew, we were able to persevere and deliver a season of highlights, including one of our most successful and acclaimed pantomimes ever. I would like to offer a special thank you to the Chair, Board and all members of the Everyman Theatre Association for their decades of dedication to the theatre. Although the ETA has now ceased operation in its current format, your efforts will not be forgotten, and we will be launching a new friends association and theatre support organisation in the coming months. Looking ahead, I am very pleased with the season of events we’ve been able to put together for your enjoyment. Worthy of particular mention is the exclusive world premiere of a brand-new musical which we will be presenting in collaboration with Love Productions, the producers of the worldwide television phenomenon The Great British Bake Off. Filled with delectable songs from one of musical theatre’s most dynamic writing partnerships, Great British Bake Off The Musical is sure to be a

little slice of heaven for the entire family. Further highlights of the new season include the first-ever stage performance of Dan Brown’s International Best Seller The Da Vinci Code, an intimate confessional evening with one of the world’s best-loved entertainers Barry Humphries and a brand new musical based on the acclaimed book series Fantastically Great Women Who Changed the World, from the producers of SIX (which also returns following previously sold-out runs). As we look ahead to the new year we will continue to do everything we can to provide top quality entertainment and educational opportunities for everyone in Gloucestershire. To assist us in providing these opportunities we have launched a new Sponsor A Seat programme. This programme offers the opportunity to dedicate a seat to a loved one, mark a special anniversary or promote yourself. Proceeds from the Sponsor A Seat programme will enable us to continue the diverse work we carry on throughout the county. Details on the programme are available on the back cover of this brochure. We hope you’re able to take advantage of this opportunity, and we look forward to seeing you at the theatre.

Reginald D Hunter:

Al Murray: Gig For Victory

Paul Merton’s Impro Chums

Climate change. Mass unemployment. Economic pandemics. The rise of global fascism. So what the f*** could this man POSSIBLY say to upset you? Welcome to the world of the Bombe Shuffleur.

As the dust settles and we emerge blinking into the dawn of a new year, the men and women of this great country will need answers. Answers that they didn’t know they need, answers to questions they never knew existed.

Paul Merton, Richard Vranch, Suki Webster, Mike McShane and accompanist Kirsty Newton are back on the road in 2022 to visit some of their favourite parts of the UK with another evening of mindblowing improvisation.

And when that moment comes, who better to show the way, than the people’s man of the people, the Pub Landlord? Steeped in the deep and ancient barroom wisdom of countless lock ins, the Pub Landlord is there to show the way. Wherever you are, he will - within sensible travel limits and theatre booking policy - come, offering people thirsty for common sense a full pint of the good stuff.

The collective improvisational experience embodied in the Chums is a joy to behold. They flex their improvisational muscles to delight and entertain audiences in this country and abroad.

Madama Butterfly

Aida

Carmen

The Russian State Opera returns to the Everyman Theatre to present three classic operas featuring an impressive cast of over 30 musicians. Carmen tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who falls head over heels in love with Carmen, a seductive, free-spirited femme fatale.

No opera can match the tragedy and sorrow of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

A gripping love story that will keep you on the edge of your seats until the very end.

Set in Japan at the turn of the last century, it is the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride whose self-sacrifice and defiance of her family leads to tragedy. This touching tale of innocent love crushed between two utterly different cultures resonates as strongly as ever in today’s world.

A deeply moving opera overflowing with emotion and containing moments of despair and uncertainty. Aida is an unforgettable, inspiring experience.

Celebrated Australian performer Barry Humphries AO, CBE will take Everyman Theatre audiences on a revelatory trip through his colourful life and theatrical career. In an intimate, confessional evening – seasoned with highly personal, sometimes startling, and occasionally outrageous stories – Australia’s best loved entertainer will be peeling off his mask to introduce the man behind the clown. For more than 60 years, Humphries has held a mirror to Australia and Australians, revealing their virtues, their foibles, their triumphs and their failings through a gallery of adored characters, including Dame Edna Everage, Sir Les Paterson and Sandy Stone. “It is the story of my generation, it is a story of a life spent in the theatre and a life spent in comedy, and it will show what it is like to be a clown. In a way, this is perhaps the bravest thing I’ve ever done and I hope the most entertaining. I think people might be agreeably shocked and they certainly will learn much they didn’t know.” Barry Humphries

STARRING JOE PASQUALE, SARAH EARNSHAW AND SUZIE BLAKE

Hilarious mishaps and DIY disasters are bringing the house down, quite literally, as Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em hits the road with Joe Pasquale (New Faces, I’m a Celebrity, Spamalot, The Producers) as the lovable accident-prone Frank Spencer. Betty has exciting news for Frank, but he’s preoccupied by possible newfound fame as a magician. Susie Blake (Coronation Street, The Victoria Wood Show, Blithe Spirit and The Everyman Theatre production of Cider with Rosie) stars as his disapproving Mother-in-Law and Sarah Earnshaw as his long-suffering wife Betty. The Rise and Fall of Little Voice STARRING SHOBNA GULATI, IAN KELSEY & CHRISTINA BIANCO

The Olivier Award-Winning comedy-drama from Jim Cartwright, which has become one of Britain’s greatest modern plays, and a smash-hit film starring Jane Horrocks and Michael Caine, is coming to the Everyman Theatre for the first time ever! Meet Little Voice and Mari Hoff. A mother and daughter central to this Northern fairy-tale’s heart, but as far apart in character as can be. Little Voice leads a quiet and unassuming life, seeking companionship and joy from music’s most iconic singers, whilst Mari prefers the sound of her own voice, indulging in a life of booze, cheap thrills and seedy men. Left to her own devices, Little Voice starts to embody the famous divas she plays on repeat, swapping the grey backstreets of Northern England for the bright lights of Hollywood and Broadway, all from the safety of her bedroom. When Mari starts dating small-time club owner Ray Say, LV’s astonishing impersonations of Shirley Bassey, Marilyn Monroe and Judy Garland,

Starring TV favourite Shobna Gulati (Coronation Street, Dinnerladies, Loose Women), British soap royalty Ian Kelsey (Emmerdale, Casualty) and ‘the girl of a thousand voices’ and two-time Drama Desk Award Nominee Christina Bianco, as Little Voice, Cartwright’s timeless and iconic tale explores the highs and the lows of small-town dreams, family rivalry and finding your voice in a noisy world. The Ballad of Mulan

The White Heart Inn

Irving Studio Theatre Jazz

The real woman behind the legendary Chinese female warrior who disguised as a man to join the Empire’s army.

“Situated in the Cornish countryside, The White Heart Inn is ideal for a Christian getaway. Marvel at the grade II listed building, built in 1609 for the Bishop of Exeter. Enjoy what the quaint village has to offer. But please, for your own safety, stay away from the marshlands.”

Cheltenham Jazz presents another series of amazing Jazz in the Everyman’s Studio Theatre.

Woman, warrior, legend. For ten years Mulan disguised herself as a man, has fought for the Chinese Empire. Now the fighting is coming to an end, one last battle and she will be going home - but can she return to her old life, become a woman again. A search for identity in a violent world.

Five guests arrive at the inn, each with a different expectation. To sleep, to explore, to hunt for ghosts. Things take a turn when they hear about the violent past of the very grounds they are staying on. The eccentric owners of the inn, Bethel and Hector, seem obsessed by the marshes next door. Local pride? Or a connection to something more sinister?

Marlon Solomon’s Conspiracy Theory: A Lizard’s Tale

We’re here to play a game.

Marlon’s a Jew. This didn’t bother him much until he discovered that some people he knew didn’t believe the Holocaust happened.

There’s everything to lose and everything to play for. The stakes couldn’t be higher. But this is no game. Despite the fact we just said it was. This is actually a final, desperate battle to save a human being. And you’re all invited.

Folk On The finest comedy folk band ever to emerge from the village of little Dribblepatch. Sure to be a joyous evening and one not to miss.

Mages, Rogues and Barbarians! Join Sam and Zoe’s party as they embark on an epic theatrical quest! Our hapless heroes may battle ogres, solve Tolkienesque riddles and rescue orphan princes- but can they slay their own demons in the process?

From 9/11 to shape-shifting lizards and Holocaust denial, this is a darkly comic tale of one man’s journey through the conspiracy underworld. Marlon explores why conspiracy theories are more popular than ever; examining how fake news gives fresh currency to ancient slander and how this all relates to issues in mainstream politics, including the Labour Party. Conspiracy Theory: A Lizard’s Tale is a one man, multi-media piece of storytelling; it’s a comic tale which is no laughing matter.

Great Expectations

A mighty spirit is about to reawaken. Yours.

Great Expectations tells of the orphan Pip’s journey from boyhood to manhood as he seeks to find his place in an inhospitable world.

Derek Jarman: film-maker, painter, gardener at Prospect Cottage, activist, writer...his influence remains as strong as it was on the day AIDS killed him in 1994. But his story, one of the most extraordinary lives ever lived, has never been told. Until now. This vibrant new solo play written and performed by Mark Farrelly (Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope, Howerd’s End) brings Derek back into being for a passionate, daring reminder of the courage it takes to truly live while you’re alive. A journey from Dungeness to deepest, brightest Soho and into the heart of one of our most iconoclastic artists.

We follow him from the marshes of Kent to London, where he aims to further his education and become a gentleman with the aid of a large fortune from a secret benefactor. It is a story of love and loss, of guilt and shame, fear and courage. With all the comedy, mystery, violent melodrama, suspense and poignancy of the original, Hotbuckle bring this wonderful tale vividly to life with their trademark live music, multiple characterisation and inventiveness.

Box Tale’s Little Grimm Tales and Great Grimm Tales Box Tale Soup are back in the Irving Studio Theatre with their stunning adaptations of Grimm’s most magical tales for young and old.
