LINE UP FIVE MOVING EXPERIENCES CAREFULLY CHOSEN TO ENGAGE. INSPIRE. TRANSFORM.
VINCENT M. LANCISI Founding Artistic Director
One of my favorite things about live theatre is its ability to show us something genuine. Something authentic. It gives me great pride that Everyman productions over the last 22 seasons have become known for this authenticity — a quality that has remained truer than ever in the intimacy of our beautiful new, 250-seat home on Fayette Street. It is because of this intimacy that the stories I have chosen for our 2013/14 season will haunt you. Inspire you. Tickle you. Move you. Challenge you. At Everyman, you will feel each production. Closely. Genuinely. Intimately. Each play has been carefully chosen to engage, inspire and transform us. I invite you to join us for the remainder of the season — there’s still time to subscribe! At just $14/show, our Check Us Out subscription for first-time subscribers begs you to ask yourself: What do I have to lose?
“Theatrical experiences don’t come much more involving or rewarding than this.”
“For the past two years, Everyman has been the best theatre in Maryland with smart challenging productions.”
“Everyman is so consistently good. I’m always ready to try something completely unfamiliar simply because Everyman is producing it.” JOANETH, EVERYMAN SUBSCRIBER

Winner of six 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Play, Red sends you crashing into the vivid and visceral mind of an artistic genius — abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. Set against the changing landscape of the early 1960s, the celebrated artist has just landed his biggest commission: a series of massive murals for New York’s posh Four Seasons Restaurant. In the midst of his creation, Rothko’s young, new assistant questions his artistic integrity, forcing the famed artist to confront the possibility that his crowning achievement could be his ultimate downfall. A searing portrait of an artist’s determination and vulnerability, Red is a stirring and captivating story of one of the most celebrated artists in modern times.

Winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize and the NY Drama Critics Circle Award, Beth Henley’s comedy brings you into the Mississippi household of the Magrath sisters. Babe has just shot her husband because she didn’t like his looks. Meg is back in town after a failed attempt in the music business and a nervous breakdown. And poor Lenny — everyone has forgotten her 30th birthday... plus, her pet horse was just struck by lightning! Bad luck certainly runs deep among the Magrath clan. But with warm-hearted laughs and touching family moments, the sisters forgive the past, face the present, and embrace the future in this contemporary American stage classic.

Both hilarious and heartbreaking, The Dresser is a backstage tale of life upon the wicked stage and the power that theatre has to lift the human spirit in times of great strife. As Britain is under attack from German aircraft, a group of traveling, ragtag Shakespearean players tours the English countryside performing the Bard’s tragic masterpiece — King Lear. Sir is the last of the great actors of a generation that has since passed. As he prepares to play his 227th performance as Lear, he suddenly realizes he cannot recall his first line. It is only his dedicated and loyal dresser, Norman, who would do anything to help lift his master, that can bring the once-great actor to the stage for a final curtain call.

It’s the height of 1930s Hollywood. Film studios are filled with glitz, glamor, and eager starlets just waiting to be discovered. Enter Vera Stark, a determined and headstrong African-American maid to a white movie star. But it turns out that Vera is an actress, too! When the stars align and both actresses are cast in the same Southern epic, the story behind the cameras leaves Vera with an unexpected and controversial legacy scholars will question for decades to come. Deliciously funny and wildly entertaining, Vera Stark uses today’s obsession and fascination with tabloids and celebrity gossip to get to the truth behind this mysterious legend of Hollywood.

Billy is a young man who lives with an intellectual, chaotic and sharp-tongued family. Arguments and insults regularly fly around the dinner table, all while Billy silently watches the scene unfold — he has been deaf since birth. He has managed to adapt to his family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never really returned the favor. His world is turned upside down when he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the cusp of deafness herself. Fresh out of London and New York, and winner of the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, Tribes is the hysterical and touching coming-of-age story about the struggle for self-identity and what it truly means to be understood.

Each Everyman play is carefully chosen to engage, inspire and transform, so while catching an occasional play is rewarding in and of itself, it’s nothing compared to experiencing the whole season as originally envisioned. Our subscribers develop a trust for our play selections and often tell us that the play they were least excited about at the beginning of the season became their favorite by the end.
