THE
2017/18
SEASON
EVERYMAN THEATRE G RE AT STO R I E S, WE LL TO L D.
Dear Friend of Everyman, I invite you to join our growing Everyman family and experience the entire season from start to finish as a subscriber. Everyman Theatre’s subscribers are the core of our organization, a vital part of every production. They laugh with us. They cry with us. They cheer on our performers. They are fiercely loyal. In an age where subscriptions are waning nationwide, Everyman is proud to welcome an ever-expanding network of new, eager and passionate individuals who can rightly call Everyman “home.” As many people know, I’m a real “foodie” at heart. While season planning, I often find myself approaching the selections as if I were putting together an elaborate menu that will surprise and delight the senses. Our 2017/18 Season is filled with course after course of great theatre and great stories. Each play will feed your heart and your soul, offering delicious and complex flavors, each with its own distinct blend of ingredients. We will travel the world from China to France, Korea to Poland and even to our own backyard of Baltimore. Along the way we’ll meet exciting, bold, intricate characters. While each story offers its own unique food for thought, when put together, all six shows make up one complete menu where each dish complements the next. Our subscriber base is our secret ingredient. I invite you to pull up a chair next season and savor each and every moment with us.

SEPT 6 THRU OCT 8 TONY AWARD WINNER
“Designed artfully to seduce, fascinate, perplex, mislead, astonish.” – Los Angeles Times East meets west. Fact meets fiction. Illusion meets reality. When a powerful French diplomat becomes enchanted with a divine Peking opera star, little can quell the thirst of their intoxicating desire—but this diva is hiding more than her true identity. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this season, David Henry Hwang’s torrid and timeless Tony Awardwinning M. Butterfly brings hide-and-seek to the stage in a gripping fable that proves the allure of fantasy and the power of obsession are a recipe for betrayal.

OCT 18 THRU NOV 19 TWO-TIME PULITZER PRIZE WINNING PLAYWRIGHT
“[A] gift to the audience.” – The Austin Chronicle Wearing her heart on her sleeve while sewing intimates for her clientele, Esther is the talented African American seamstress in turn-of-the-century New York who has built a savings for herself making beautiful undergarments—while earnestly daydreaming of new beginnings, romantic possibilities, and the lingering affection she shares with a Jewish fabric merchant. But when an egregious deception cuts short heartfelt desires, can class, culture and circumstance outmatch the strength of human spirit? Inspired by a true story, Intimate Apparel is a heart-rending contemporary work in the style of an enduring classic—from the first female playwright to win two Pulitzers.

DEC 6 THRU JAN 7 EAST COAST PREMIERE
“A sassy, hold-on-to-your-seats theatrical adventure.” – The Cincinnati Enquirer Greetings from the French Revolution— where heads will roll. When you put former queen Marie Antoinette, assassin Charlotte Corday, playwright Olympe de Gouges, and Caribbean spy Marianne Angelle in a room together, literally ANYTHING can happen—especially big laughs! France’s fight for equality and freedom propels itself to modern times with this bold, brave and blisteringly funny new work about feminism, legacy and standing up for one’s beliefs. Who runs the world? The jury’s still out, but these girls sure as hell changed it.

JAN 31 THRU MAR 4 PULITZER PRIZE & TONY AWARD WINNER
“A tempest in a bourbon bottle.” – The New York Times What begins as an ordinary summer day at the Connecticut home of the Tyrone family morphs into a night filled with foggy, drink-laced demons where longburied secrets are revealed—and once exposed cannot be ignored. A long-revered showcase for tour-de-force performances, Eugene O’Neill’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning masterpiece (published posthumously) lays bare what we all know to be true: the ardor of familial love cannot always protect you. Long Day’s Journey Into Night is an autobiographical insight into its late, legendary playwright—and a compassionately brutal look at one family’s struggle to fight for and love itself.

MAR 14 THRU APR 15 MIDATLANTIC PREMIERE
“Sweet, savory and uncommonly nourishing.” – San Fransisco Chronicle When words fail, a home-cooked meal transcends differences in this touching story of intergenerational connectedness, forgiveness and the sweetest spice of life: love. As a Korean family struggles to relate across emotional and cultural divides, it’s the ingredients they share in common that lead to understanding. A perceptive and lyrical exploration of the act of cooking as a form of expression, Aubergine is a mouthwatering meditation on the beauty of life where hope is no mere ingredient— it’s the main course.

MAY 9 THRU JUNE 10 EAST COAST PREMIERE
“You might lose count of how many times a chill runs down your spine.” – TimeOut Like so many great mysteries, it all began in an attic with a dusty old suitcase... The discovery of a stash of letters stamped with Swastikas opens clues to an untold family history spanning multiple generations in The Book of Joseph—the gripping true story of resilience and truth-tracking determination spanning Baltimore and beyond. Richard Hollander’s book, Every Day Lasts a Year: A Jewish Family’s Correspondence from Poland, is brought to the stage in this mesmerizing new adaptation that restores a family’s uncharted legacy—celebrated by revelation and remembrance.

ENHANCE YOUR EXPERIENCE... IN THE CLASSROOM
A HOME FOR LIFELONG LEARNING THROUGH THE ARTS.
“I learned to trust my inner storyteller, how to capture and keep the attention of an audience, and the appreciation for the many stories we all have to tell, no matter how big or small.” -Andrew S., Actor’s Lab Student “I love that Everyman is in the city and is an inclusive and nurturing environment.” -Parent of 6-8 grade Theatre Maker Student
Everyman Theatre Education is a home for life-long learning through the arts, offering affordable and accessible learning opportunities for students of all ages and skill levels. This year, students ages 1 through 86 enjoyed summer camps, on-site youth and adult classes, and the new TNT: Theatre Night for Teens! These opportunities deepen students’ creative journey, teach important life skills, and create healthy community. Our signature High School matinee program exposed hundreds of Baltimore City students to five productions, flanked by pre-and post-show curricular support. Everyman’s Creative Journeys In-School Residency program teaches students in grades K-5 who otherwise would not have access to theatre. Interested in investing in your creative journey or supporting affordable arts education programs for all? Email education@everymantheatre.org, call 443.615.7055 x7142 or visit us online.
