Halifax Halifax is on Mi’kmaw territory. The people of the Mi’kmaw Nation have lived on this territory for millennia. Their culture and presence have nurtured and continue to nurture this place. The partners behind Every One Every Day Kjipuktuk honour our ancestors, the peoples, and the land of the Mi’kmaw Nation.

History shaping place We also recognize that the African Nova Scotian community have called this area home for centuries and have been forcibly displaced and marginalized on this land. We acknowledge the resilience of so many in the face of systemic oppression, as we work to create a more just and equitable society for all.

Why we do this In acknowledging the traditional territories of First Peoples, you are inviting those who are gathered with you to build awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights in everyday life, and to deepen their knowledge of the land’s richness and significance to all living things. Land acknowledgements are a sign of respect and a means to begin your journey towards a more reconciled future. Learn more about this here: native-land.ca/ resources/territory-acknowledgement

SPRING PROGRAM JUNE 11 – JULY 9, 2022

Welcome! Halifax’s North End is a special place, and home to many people with different languages, cultures, skills and hobbies.

What is Every One Every Day about?

Together we want to make even more opportunities for people to get together and share these wonderful things. Can you imagine a place where people can get together to cook, play, share, learn, bake, make and chat? We’re going to make it happen, but we need you!

Practical ‘hands on’ sessions brought to you by local residents. Every One Every Day brings together people from different parts of the North End neighbourhood to create and learn from one another. These projects involve sharing spaces, skills and resources. They range from batch cooking and community meals, getting outside to explore the neighbourhood, sharing cultural knowledge and traditions, as well as making, crafting, building, repairing and much more.

Every One Every Day is working with local residents and organizations to create opportunities for neighbors to connect and learn over shared interests, and where everybody from across the local area can get to know each other. Central to these interactions is respectful learning and sharing across the histories and cultures that make up the places we call home. Mark your calendars! The first 4-week Spring Program marks the beginning of Every One Every Day. There will be fun-packed, handson activities, run by other people that live in the area, and they want you to join in! The Program starts on Saturday June 11 on Gottingen Street, where you can join us for the Festival of Everyone!

www.halifaxiseveryone.ca

Support with getting things going in your neighbourhood. The Every One Every Day team is here to help take care of all the essentials such as finding spaces, purchasing materials, ensuring health and safety and inviting others to take part. To create the Spring Program, we worked with residents to surface their ideas and bring them to life in the neighbourhood. We hope it will spark more ideas and creativity around future projects that we can grow together. And this is just the start! What ways of bringing people together can you imagine in the North End? Come along for a cup of tea, and let’s see what we can make happen together.

FRIENDSHIP RENEW, REIMAGINE & REDISCOVER

The Every One Every Day Spring Program is an invitation for us all to explore Friendship—now more than ever, our friendships are essential. What you’ll find here are many invitations to Renew, Reimagine, and Rediscover what FRIENDSHIP means to you.

Renew Friendships

ReImagine Friendship

Rediscover Friendship

The pandemic has brought different challenges for us all, yet it has also opened our eyes to the collective strength that is possible. Now, we can build on this strength to renew our sense of connection, and the many possibilities for neighbors to become friends. Every One Every Day is all about local residents coming together to share their stories, gifts, and talents, and to renew our relationships, inspired by what friendship means to you. Have an idea for something we can do together in the neighbourhood? We’re here to help you team up with neighbours to make it happen!

Friendship means many things to many people, and stumbling on new or unexpected friendships can bring magic to everyday life. The Every One Every Day projects can help us to reimagine friendship—through the ways and places we meet as strangers, and realize the many things we have in common. Whether it’s a cup of tea and a chat, making things together, or showing others around the neighbourhood, there are many ways to connect with others and reimagine friendships close to home. Check out the Spring Program to get inspired, or find inspiration through amazing projects from across the world: communityloversguide.org

Whether you’re new to the area or your roots here run deep, the North End of Halifax is a place with so much to discover, and different people to learn from. But like any neighbourhood—we need ways to explore it! The Every One Every Day Neighbourhood Shop is a place to discover fun and practical activities that help to spark joy and creativity around all the things we can do more of together. Most of all, it’s a space for us to learn from one another, and rediscover friendship in all its forms. Starting in June, stop by the shop to explore fun activities and new friendships.

Peace and Friendship Treaties Relationships built on the idea of friendship were the foundation of this land as we now know it—these lands are covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship. Our ancestors, both European and Indigenous, established the treaties around these sacred relationships—making each and every one of us, Treaty People. Curious to know more? Learn about the treaties and our shared history here: novascotia.ca/treaty-education

How We Work

1

2

3

When we say everyone, we mean everyone. We all come with unique stories, experiences, gifts and talents. Every One Every Day is an open invitation to connect and learn from one another across shared interests. Can’t find something that interests you? Need help to register or take part? Our team is here to support you in taking part and connecting with your neighbours.

This isn’t about being skilled or an expert in something. It’s about learning and spending time with others, and having support to bring your ideas to life in the neighbourhood. Whatever you enjoy doing or think you might like to try could be something that others are interested in too—we’re here to make it easier to start and grow your ideas.

Most people have busy lives. Between work, raising children, caring for older relatives and keeping households going, people need participation opportunities that fit with all the other things going on. These activities will be near where you live, they will be short and at different times of day, and free to attend.

The whole neighbourhood matters. Getting involved in Every One Every Day means creating space for everyone to have a say in picking projects, planning, and taking part. The projects outlined in this newspaper are designed to spark ideas around what we could do more of together. Anyone can contribute, including children of all ages—we call them mini-makers.

Every One Every Day is not a volunteering program. We work with residents to help create projects that directly benefit you, your neighbours, friends and family. These benefits might include learning new things, saving you money or time, sharing and trading resources, or making new friends and creating a greater sense of community.

These projects see people working together on practical ideas that make their neighbourhoods more exciting and enjoyable places to live. By taking part in these projects people become creators and co-producers of the places in which they live. Over time, we can create networks of people and projects that make everyday life better for everyone.

Meaningful ways to learn about Truth and Reconciliation We all have a responsibility to learn the truth about Canada’s history, particularly the nation’s relationship with the first peoples of this land. Every One Every Day strives to create space for important conversations about the truth in our history and how sharing that knowledge contributes towards a more reconciled and socially-just future.

Wije’winen Come with us The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre opened its doors in the North End community in 1973, as a safe and welcoming space for First Nations, Inuit and Métis people from across the province to access culturally relevant programs and services, and build connections to community and culture in the urban context. Today, the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre has a bold vision for a new Friendship Centre. The new Wije’winen Centre will honour the contributions of Indigenous Peoples to the region’s culture and history and serve as a highly visible emblem of Reconciliation that welcomes everyone. Central to the vision of the Wije’winen Centre is meaningful and inclusive participation—of the Indigenous community, of the non-Indigenous community, of Indigenous and non-Indigenous governments, and of visitors to this region of Canada.

6

Every One Every Day Kjipuktuk-Halifax carries the spirit of Wije’winen into neighbourhoods, to nurture and grow new relationships, and as a journey to explore and take meaningful steps towards Reconcili-ACTION.

Neighbourhood Shop Calling all North End businesses and organizations!

The Every One Every Day Neighbourhood Shop is not a retail environment. There will not be anything for sale, and it is not run for the purpose of generating profit. The Neighbourhood Shop is a creative hub where local residents are invited to meet and connect with one another, take part in fun and practical activities led by other residents, and work together to plan and grow future neighbourhood projects. Over time, we hope to work with local organizations and businesses across the North End to network, connect, participate and work together to make everyday more enjoyable for everyone.

Every Day continues to grow, we expect to launch a second Neighbourhood Shop, to help grow participation across the neighbourhood even more.

The first Neighbourhood Shop is opening at 2169 Gottingen Street in June 2022 and will be open to the public during set hours on weekdays and weekends. As Every One

Have an idea to make the Neighbourhood Shop even more exciting or welcoming? Stop by to chat with the team and share your ideas!

www.halifaxiseveryone.ca

Over time we hope that these shops will become familiar gathering spaces, as well as co-creation spaces, where a team of Project Designers will provide consistent support for many different residents to start and grow projects across the neighbourhood. At their core, the shops are located and designed to show what public spaces could look like if they were shaped around people, and their natural gifts and creativity.

Do you have an accessible community space that residents could work together in, to bring their ideas for the neighbourhood to life? How about equipment or tools that could be useful for doing and making all sorts of things together? Whether it’s a communal kitchen space, tools for borrowing, or equipment to teach with, we’d love to hear from you! Over the coming years we hope to build relationships with more and more organizations who can work together to make the North End wonderful for everyone. Have an idea or something to share? A Call to Reflect

Indigenous Peoples’ Day We, at Every One Every Day Kjiputuk-Halifax, recognize the many distinct cultures and traditions of the Indigenous Peoples of the lands and territories that we call Canada. We honour their enduring strength and resilience despite ongoing colonial oppression, the historic and current dispossession of land, the Residential School system and 60s Scoop era and the generational impacts they’ve had. We celebrate the invaluable contributions that First Nations, Metis and Inuit people have made, and continue to make in all aspects of life including in medicine, arts, business and politics. We will continue to hold space for their grief, sorrow, anger and frustration and we stand with them in their ongoing calls for truth and action. In the spirit of reconciliation, let us use this day and beyond, as an opportunity to reflect on our actions and inactions, recognize the way Indigenous knowledge and wisdom influences the way we see and understand the world around us, and move forward together, in peace, friendship and accountability.

“The road we travel is equal in importance to the destination we seek. There are no shortcuts. When it comes to Truth and Reconciliation, we are forced to go the distance.” – Justice Murray Sinclair Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada

Canada Day

BIGSTOCK/MBRUXELLE

July 1st continues to be a controversial or confusing time for many, but no matter how you choose to spend this day, may it serve as a reminder that we all have responsibilities as Treaty People It is also an opportunity to make a promise to learn more about our country’s past, to contribute to a better future to make Canada a safer and more just home for everyone in it.

18

Take time to reflect on what this day means to the Indigenous people you share this land with. Ask yourself, “How am I contributing to the nation-to-nation relationship?” and how we can work together to address the colonial legacy of this country so that it is a place that everyone can celebrate together.
