Halifax

Halifax is on Mi’kmaw territory. The people of the Mi’kmaw Nation have lived on this territory for millennia. Their culture and presence have nurtured and continue to nurture this place. The partners behind Every One Every Day Kjipuktuk honour our ancestors, the peoples, and the land of the Mi’kmaw Nation.

Pjila’si! Greetings!

Halifax’s North End is a special place, and home to many people with different languages, cultures, skills and hobbies.

Together we are creating new opportunities for people to connect and share these wonderful gifts. Can you imagine a place where, Every Day, people get together with others in their community for shared experiences of mutual benefit? Where people from across communities can get to know each other by engaging in respectful learning, and by sharing stories across cultures and generations.

Mark your calendars! The Spring Program is just around the corner and it’s going to be full of hands-on activities, hosted by people that live in your neighbourhood, and they want you to join in! Whether

Paniaq “Spring begins”

We acknowledge and welcome all the beauty around us, as spring begins, and awakens the earth of Mi’kma’ki.

We greet new life and give thanks for the sustenance that our Earth Mother provides us. She awakens from her winter rest and begins to bring us new life. We are reminded during this time of babies and little ones, of the feelings of joy and hope that accompany the gifts of renewal and new opportunities.

it’s learning how to use new tools to build and fix things, preparing a delicious Caribbean meal, practicing the art of henna, or working on DIY projects for your home, there’s something for everyone!

The Program awakens on April 1st 2023 where you can join in at the Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop for hours of making, learning, sharing, and exploration, discovering what talents and skills are awaiting just next door. There is no experience necessary to participate and everyone is welcome!

This spring we will learn, heal and grow together by opening ourselves up to new opportunities in the places and spaces we call home.

Meet the Team

The Double-Curve Motif, “Aboodalooak”, is a sign of written communication originating with the Wabanaki Confederacy, which includes the Mi’kmaq, Penobscot, Peskotomuhkatiyik, Abenaki, and Wolastoqey Nations. It reflects one’s spirit and earth journey, and signifies the need to keep balance over our lives.

There are 7 Double-Curve Motifs hidden within the front and back covers of this newspaper. Try to locate them all, good luck!

The number seven is significant to many of the Indigenous Nations here on Turtle Island. For the Mi’kmaq, seven represents the directions for prayer and ceremony. They are, East, South, West, North, up to Great Spirit, down to our Earth Mother, and within Oneself.

fabrics, or anything else, it’s a space for neighbours to meet and do things with their neighbours.

The Neighbourhood Shop is a creative hub where residents are invited to meet and connect with one another, take part in fun and practical activities led by other residents, and work together to plan and grow all sorts of neighbourhood projects. There is nothing for sale in the shop and it is not run for the purpose of generating profit.

When you come to the Shop, you’ll find a range of equipment and supplies, a welcoming team to introduce you to the space, inspirational project ideas, and open invitations to lead and take part in things that interest you. What Every One Every Day Is All About!

A team of Project Designers will always be around to offer support to help start and grow project ideas that benefit you and the neighbourhood. If we don’t have the knowledge and skills needed to support, we’ll help to find others who can help us to get going!

In the Shop you’ll find equipment such as sewing machines and fabrics, basic tools for making and woodworking, crafting materials, computers, supplies for greening projects, and much more!

Stop by to check out what’s here and share your ideas for new equipment and supplies that you can make use of!

We have a Neighbourhood Shop on Gottingen St. that is here to help neighbours connect over shared interests and work together on mutually beneficial projects.

People pop in to have a cup of coffee (or tea!) and share their idea for a project, working with the design team to bring their ideas to life in the neighbourhood.

Since opening in 2022, the project has been working to grow a large enthusiastic network of people who are doing practical things together to make everyday life better for everyone.

So far, a range of projects have been initiated with a growing number of people participating, with as much or as little support as needed, included cooking, sewing, building, making, and much more.

Lots of wonderful things are being achieved by community members, friends, family and neighbours. What ways of bringing people together can you imagine in the North End? Come along and let’s see what we can make happen together!

4 Spring 2023 • Every One Every Day Kjipuktuk / Halifax

Reconciliation Guideposts to Support Every Day Action

These guideposts have been identified through our experiences and shared learning to date and are just the beginning of a long-term commitment to reconciling relations with our Indigenous kin and the natural world. They help to keep us aligned with our values and intentions, and alert us when we stray from the path to true reconciliation.

Guideposts:

• Considering our impact on the First Peoples of this land, and with the same lens, taking care to eliminate the ongoing harm and oppression of racialized and marginalized communities.

• Building Indigenous identity and belonging in the urban context.

• Acknowledging and defending Indigenous peoples’ right to selfdetermination as an active ally.

• Creating space for truth and honouring the process of healing.

• Thinking and acting for the future.

• Recognizing the interconnectedness of all living things and being a good relative.

We invite you to share your journey on the path to Reconciliation. Where does Every Day Action show up in your neighbourhood?

“My first thought about the Every One Every Day fall program is that it was perfectly named: ‘Abundance’. Between October 21 and November 26, more than thirty sessions, events, and ways to gather, were offered to the community. I participated in eight of these. I cooked, drew, beaded, shared, listened, and learned. Each experience was different, but one thing was the same—the generosity and openness with which we were welcomed.

Another common thread running through the program, because it is not otherwise all that common, was that the sessions brought together a diverse group of participants, diverse in age and gender, with Indigenous, settler, and newcomer backgrounds. It’s hard to describe the Neighbourhood Shop, how the vibe works, but I feel it is intentionally created, and unique.

I went to ‘Powwow Etiquette’ because I’ve never been to an actual powwow. I told myself it was because I didn’t want to act like a tourist or invade space. I didn’t really believe the dancers wanted “outsiders” there, why would they, why would anyone? (This kind of thinking is as old as the ass in assume and about as helpful.) By way of contrast, the session host, Jesse, bowled us over with her enthusiasm and encouragement, while gently making a few key points. The respectful term for what the dancers wear is regalia. It’s not a costume, a powwow is not theatre, and nobody is playing dress-up. She spoke from her own experience so we would really get why you do not try to examine or touch the regalia

Wije’winen Come With Us

In the coming years, the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre will establish its new home next to the historic site of Citadel Hill. This new facility, called The Wije’winen Centre, will be a central hub in the heart of the city that can be a beacon for Truth and Reconciliation in the urban context— where Indigenous history and identity are honoured and celebrated, and where crosscultural collaboration can flourish in ways that honour and respect our relationships with another, with the land, and with the natural world.

Wije’winen means Come With Us. As Every One Every Day grows, it carries the spirit of Wije’winen into neighbourhoods—working shoulder to shoulder with residents to create a growing network of neighbourhood projects that facilitate cross-cultural sharing and invite the participation of everyone. These projects form the basis of new relationships, peer to peer learning, and harmonious interactions with the places in which we live.

without permission. It was useful to learn that a group of chairs might be reserved for Elders (so check), that Elders eat first, and that the powwow announcer will guide you through the gathering, including when everyone is welcome to dance. Because of this session, and the joy Jesse emanated when she talked about dancing fancy shawl, I will, gratefully, go to a powwow this summer.”

Food Day

Gottingen St. Neighbourhood Shop, 2169 Gottingen St. Saturday, May 13 · 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Food has the ability to both preserve and celebrate culture and community, through a vast array of knowledge and traditions that can connect each generation to the next. When people gather to share stories, prepare treasured family recipes, and enjoy the company of loved ones over a homecooked meal, food transcends beyond nutritional value and medicine, to strengthen family ties, and bolster community connection and identity.

Join your neighbours on Food Day to expereince something new on your tastebuds, learn new skills like minimizing food waste, and discover what local businesses and organizations are doing to help make fresh foods more available in your community.

For over 400 years, more than fifty historic Black communities in Nova Scotia have passed down savory fixings, rich in culture and African and Caribbean spices. Across the city, residents can enjoy this flavour and style of cuisine, and appreciate a taste of what makes it unique to African/ Caribbean culture in Nova Scotia.
