Halifax is in Mi’kmaw territory. The people of the Mi’kmaw Nation have lived on this territory for millennia. Their culture and presence have nurtured and continue to nurture this place. The partners behind Every One Every Day Kjipuktuk honour our ancestors, the peoples, and the land of the Mi’kmaq.

On The Cover The cover was inspired by the story of Rayshed, a local resident, who came to the Shop and shared his interest in starting a community quilting project. As he and a Neighbourhood Project Designer worked on the co-design and planning, another resident, Noreen, agreed to assist with sewing, as she had previously expressed her ability to share her sewing skills with others. Join Rayshed, Noreen, and other neighbours during our Spring Program to learn how to upcycle clothes into cozy quilts! Cover illustration by Shannon Long e @shannon.long.art

Climate Action: AN ACT OF

RECONCILIATION Addressing climate change and ensuring a healthy environment for all, is an act of Reconciliation with First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Peoples, who have been guardians and stewards of ecosystems, and the lands and waters that uphold them, since time immemorial. Supporting Indigenous approaches to climate action by acknowledging traditional, local, and Indigenous knowledge systems will offer more wholistic solutions in climate policy development, programs, and decision-making. Let’s join Indigenous Leadership across Turtle Island who are taking collective action towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, managing air and water pollution, supporting healthy, sustainable food systems, and protecting the natural world.

“Everything we do to our natural world; we do to ourselves. Everything is interdependent and interconnective. Thus, you need to use your gifts in a responsible way.”

– Dr. Albert Marshall, L’nu Elder

Etuaptmumk Understanding Our Earth Mother, from a Mi’kmaw Perspective Etuaptmumk, “two-eyed seeing”, is a Mi’kmaw concept and guiding principle that helps us understand the natural world from a more wholistic view. It brings together different ways of knowing and applies these multiple perspectives to co-exist, together, in a good way, while taking care of our Earth Mother now and for generations to come. Elder Dr. Albert Marshall first introduced Etuaptmumk, to encourage Mi’kmaw youth, who are learning about Western philosophies, worldviews, and sciences in educational institutions, to use this knowledge alongside their ancestral knowledge and understanding as Mi’kmaq, to enhance their understanding of our Earth Mother – to always look at everything from another perspective. Rather than merging traditional Mi’kmaw knowledge with Western science, Etuaptmumk demonstrates the benefits of finding common ground between the two perspectives, recognizing and respecting differences, “to see from one eye with the best in the Indigenous ways of knowing, and from the other eye with the best in the Western ways of knowing...and to learn to use both these eyes together for the benefit of all.” (Dr. Albert Marshall, L’nu Elder)

4

“Netukulimk means to have enough, but not more than enough. It teaches us to use natural bounty for ourselves and community sustenance, without wasting and jeopardizing it for the future.”

– Killa Atencio, L’nu

Netukulimk Being in Relationship with Our Earth Mother, from a Mi’kmaw Perspective Netukulimk is inherent to how Mi’kmaw people think, see themselves, and understand the world around them. Being in relationship with the land, from a Mi’kmaw perspective, is to understand that the land sustains us physically and spiritually, and that there is a fundamental responsibility, as individuals and together as kin, to maintain and provide for our Earth Mother just as she provides for us her natural gifts that sustain life. We welcome you to learn more about Netukulimk during our EcoTalk curated session on Earth Day, Monday April 22, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Neighbourhood Shop, 2169 Gottingen Street. You can also check out this article written by Killa Atencio, a Mi’kmaw artist living in Kjipuktuk: www.bit.ly/atencio-netukulimk

Climate and the Seasons, from a Mi’kmaw Perspective Traditional Mi’kmaw knowledge is a significant source of information for understanding our climate. The Mi’kmaw language is relational to nature and demonstrates how the Mi’kmaq understand ecosystems and identify changes in ecological patterns.

Wikumkewiku’s (wig-goom-gay-we-goos) “mate calling time” September

Kisikewiku’s (kes-ig-ay-we-goos) “berry ripening time” August

The Mi’kmaw lunar calendar is another example that exhibits these changes by naming each moon or month based on what is happening in the natural world in the region at that time.

Nipniku’s (nib-nee-goos) “trees fully leafed time” June

Turning Understanding into Action As we continue to learn about First Nation, Métis, and Inuit ways of knowing and being in relationship with the earth, we must ensure that our understanding turns into meaningful ‘Every Day’ actions, where ‘Every One’ contributes and is committed to creating a healthy and sustainable future for all- people, land, and nature.

Small Acts Make a

Big Difference When thinking about climate change, it’s easy to feel like small acts don’t matter, but they do! Each day, we can make choices to reduce environmental impact, connect to the natural world, and learn new ways to act. The Every One Every Day Spring Program has lots of exciting ways to get together with neighbours and Act Together for Climate – whether it’s learning sewing skills, composting with worms, up-cycling materials, building garden beds, or finding imaginative ways to connect with the natural world. There is no act too small and when taken together, our daily actions can add up to big change.

Start a project of your own Throughout this paper, you’ll find a range of projects you can contribute to, but there is no limit to ideas, and we want to hear yours! A project can take many shapes and forms. Everyone is welcome to add their ideas to an existing project, replicate one inspires you, or adapt a project into something new. Here’s how you can get started: • Bring a project from home to work on in the Shop, on your own or with others. You’re always welcome to leave your project behind and come back and finish it later. • Chat with the team about a new project idea; we can connect you with others who can contribute to your idea and help to get things started.

Get inspired Across the globe, people are coming up with fun and imaginative projects that are bringing people together to reduce our environmental impact while making their neighbourhoods more exciting and enjoyable places to live.

Every One Every Day takes inspiration from these ideas, as well as all the wonderful projects that people are dreaming up and doing, right here at home. Ideas for new projects can come from anywhere, and the Every One Every Day team can help to get things started. Check out some inspiration!

Repair Cafés

Worldwide Repair Cafés are free meeting places that encourage people to get together and repair household items like furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, appliances, toys, and more. A repair cafe will have tools and materials to help make needed repairs, as well as people with repair skills in all kinds. www.repaircafe.org

Spring Stickers for Climate Action As you look through the projects in the Spring Program, you’ll see at least one climate sticker that helps identify how it connects to climate action. Keep an eye out for the different stickers and see how many actions you can try by taking part in different sessions!

What is Circular Living? This might be a term you’ve never heard before, or one you know lots about. Contributing to a more circular way of living involves changing our patterns of production and consumption to minimize waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use, and contribute to the regeneration of natural ecosystems. Instead of buying something new, it could mean sharing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing or recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible. When buying new, it means looking at how and where things are made to better understand their impact on the environment. Every day, we can make choices to buy less, buy local, and protect natural resources through daily habits. Check out these amazing places to learn skills and contribute to a more circular way of living right here in the North End! Halifax Tool Library & Workshop Borrow from a collection of over 2500 tools and learn new skills in a workshop where you can work alongside others to build, fix, and repair things. www.halifaxtoollibrary.ca Bike Again Halifax Learn basic bike repairs, donate old bikes, and meet new people who are interested in all things bikes! www.ecologyaction.ca Hope Blooms There's so much to learn and do at Hope Blooms like checking out their food programs and shopping at their Fair Food Market www.hopeblooms.ca

Understanding Ecological Grief Often described as “Eco-Grief”, this term refers to feelings of loss that can arise when learning about or experiencing forms of environmental destruction such as the loss of species, ecosystems, or meaningful landscapes. Whether it is felt through experiences of real loss, or sense of anticipated loss, it is a healthy emotional response to environmental loss that many people experience. For many, experiences of Eco-Grief might feel scary, overwhelming, or even isolating, but learning more and having conversations with others can be a starting place to discover changes we can make in our lives, or new ways to act with others.
