Imagine this. You’re on a well-deserved vacation with your girls. Sun is shining. Your hair, nails, and outfit are all on fleek. You look up and see the most beautiful human creation you’ve ever seen, and they’re coming your way! How do you handle this chance encounter with this gorgeous stranger? Should you give in to temptation or nah? There are plenty of factors that should influence your final decision. How comfortable are you with casual sex? If you can hit the sheets with a perfect stranger and not feel the morning-after regret, go for it! It will certainly make for one heck of a vacation story to share with your co-workers. If you’re more cautious and reserved, wait it out. Go out for drinks, or spend the day with your new found love interest. After spending time together, if you still feel good about giving up the goods, go ahead and enjoy yourself, honey! If not, explain that even though you had a great time, you don’t want to move too fast. Most people will respect your honesty; if they don’t, you’ve definitely made the right choice anyway. What if you do decide to take a roll in the hay with this exotic individual? How do you handle the morning-after? Watch for verbal and non-verbal cues. If your lover is already gone before the sun rises, they’ve already made the decision for you. Goodbye, Charlie. It’s rarely ever that easy though. Watch and listen for signals about the next steps you two should take. Are they interested in seeing you again? Are they suddenly in a hurry to get you out because they have “plans”? Do they even remember your name? These are all things that will help you decide whether or not you should see Captain Dreamy again or if you should officially classify this rendezvous as a one night stand.
Intimacy or Nah? Casual Sex While On Vacation Written By: Shanowya Jackson, Relationships Contributor

Whether you’re the bold risk taker or the careful thinker, there are certain precautions that you should take before getting busy with a stranger. Always use protection. And it’s best to be prepared and carry your own, that way you know it’s safe and hasn’t been tampered with. Make sure your travel buddies know where you are and who you’re going to be doing the do with. It’s also wise to give them the phone number of your cuddy buddy and set a time when you will check in with them to let them know you’re safe. And always be aware of your surroundings. Try to be mindful of landmarks and street signs just in case things go sour and you have to find your way back to wherever you are staying. So… intimacy or nah? Yes and no. It’s all based on your own individual views on sex and intimate relationships. Never do anything that you makes you feel embarrassed or ashamed. And also keep in mind the distance you’ve traveled from home. If you’re the kind to get attached, you might not want to have sexy time with someone who lives hundreds or thousands of miles away from you. It just sets you up for failure in the end. But it may be nice to take a gamble. Live a little. Enjoy your time away, even if it doesn’t exactly lead to getting some booty. Vacations are all about new experiences and exciting adventures. After all, you only live once, Right? m

BEAUTY || ZODIAC BEAUTY
Cancer:
Everyone knows your emotions determine everything and your beauty look is no different. What everyone loves about you is how versatile you can be when switching things up. You tend to keep your beauty classy and chic, but love to experiment with soft colors and trending hairstyles. Bright reds disturb your mood, but every now and then you don't mind stepping outside the box.
Aries
Your beauty is all about fire. Leave the dull nudes and boring displays of beauty for those who don't know how to live life the rebellious way. You are in love with red! Your beauty is all about making a grand impression. The red lip and color-streaked hair will always be your go-to- guide. You are known to set beauty trends and push the envelope frequently, only for others to catch up months later.
Leo: Taurus:
You thrive off luxury. You won't settle for just anything but the absolute best. Luxurious fragrances, top-notch lip wear, caviar bling nails and expensive beauty products is how you live. Your beauty is natural and understated but 'oh so' expensive. When it comes to beauty splurges, you wear the crown and want nothing but the best products the beauty world has to offer. Simple glam is how your beauty is best described.
Just like Taurus you are all about luxury. Glamour is your middle name. You wouldn't dare be caught rocking a $5 lipstick out of Walgreens. For you, it's all about being the queen of your jungle. Leos love gold- real gold that is! They will wear it as eye-shadow if it existed. Chanel, Gucci, MAC, and more are all in your makeup bag. You love rocking a fierce lip and won't discriminate about the color as long as it fits your Queen status. When it comes to coloring your hair, going blonde would be your first choice, as long as it’s chic and classy. Leos don't play with their image.
Virgo:
Gemini:
The word simple isn't even in your vocabulary. You bore very easy. You’re the daredevil of the zodiac and are known to experiment with every hair color in the rainbow. You live to switch it up on a daily basis. One week you have short hair, the next week you have long hair. Your beauty looks are bi-polar, but that's why everyone loves you.
www.everythinggirlslove.com • Winter 2015
Many wish they knew your beauty regimen. What many don't know is Virgos work hard to get clear flawless skin. You are a naturalist by heart. Don't they know you are the health nut of the zodiac? Your beauty look is always simple and understated, but flawless. Your even toned makeup looks and well-manicured nails are who you are. Every now and then you will walk on the wild side, but only for a day or two. You prefer to leave the heavy eye-makeup and bright hair do's to those who wish to be noticed. A shy little bird like you just wants to blend in with the rest of the crowd.
Capricorn:
Your beauty is all about staying in your own lane. Just like fellow earth sign Taurus, you want nothing but the best. Capricorns are also the professionals of the zodiac and would prefer to keep things traditional. No color wigs and mohawk cuts for this sign. They speak the beauty language of manicured nails, soft rose cheeks, nude lip gloss, and well arched eyebrows. Hair is no exception, and has to be laid just right. Many Capricorns take their prim and proper look very seriously.
Libra:
Your beauty is always fun and flirty. Known as the zodiac flirt, you can charm the socks off a blind man if it suits your needs. People love how your beauty remains soft, sensual and well-balanced (think Kim Kardashian, who is also a Libra). Even though you like to play with colors, you never overdo or downplay it. When it comes to a Libra's beauty, things are always balanced. She represent the scales.
Scorpio:
Your beauty is elusive and mysterious, but your eyes say it all. When it comes to your beauty, you are the cat eye MVP. Your mysterious persona takes your beauty look into the underworld. Deep reds on the lips and cheeks please you every time. You love playing in dark colors, smoky eyes, black nails and more! You can go deep and you’re known as the only sign that can wear goth makeup looks and love it.
Aquarius:
You’re a beauty that knows how to take risks. But more than anything it's usually with your hair. Something about you just needs to experiment with different colors, cuts, and lengths of hair. When it comes to your make up look, the humanitarian side of you loves to keep it simple as you save the world. Just ask fellow Aquarian Alicia Keys.
Pisces: Sagittarius:
You’re the least of the zodiac sign to actually spoil yourself into the beauty world. You don't take your free-spirited image too seriously. However, when you do you’re in it for the fun! Just like Gemini, you bore easily and are known to experiment with every color capable for hair, nails, eyes, and lips. Many wonder what you will pull off next. One week you’re a redhead, the next week you’re strictly black. When it comes to your beauty, remaining the same isn't in your forte. www.everythinggirlslove.com • Winter 2015
Your beauty is soft and delicate. Pisces are the girly girls of the zodiac. You’re a sensitive soul and it displays in your beauty looks. Pinks, pastels, and nudes get you every time. When it comes to fragrances, soft florals take you to Lala Land. The best thing about a Pisces beauty is their eyes. They will simply have you in a trance. m
Being a different kind of beauty makes the world go round. Each sign has something unique and special. Which one areyou?

Feature EGL: So first off, how have you been? Toya: I’ve been good just staying busy. You know working and being a full time mommy. EGL: Right of course lol. You have so many good things going on; Garb boutique, Reginae, your new book coming out, and not to mention just having a life and being a mom. How do you balance it all? What are some of the daily tasks you do when you wake up? How do you manage to go through your day and accomplish everything you have to do? Toya: I just started back working out and I also write during breakfast, for the next book. I have a few new projects that I’m working on so I’ve been kind of like traveling a whole lot, but busy is good. LOL EGL: How about having a day off ? Do you ever just take a day out the week or once every two weeks or once a month where you’re just like, I’m not going to do anything today? Toya: Yes I do. Sometimes I take a break and just focus on me. I’ll travel and do things like that. Like I have a couple of days set out to travel with me my little sister and my daughter. March 27th – 30th. I think it’s very important to get away and clear your mind and have some me time or some family time. EGL: Do you ever surprise yourself with how much energy and strength it took to finish those daily tasks... Are you ever like wow I got through that…I did that? Toya: Yeah I mean I surprise myself all the time. It’s a whole lot especially when you are trying to juggle so much on top of dealing with personal issues. It’s a lot but you know I continue to surprise myself all the time because I have faith and I’m a very strong person. I done been through a lot in my whole life. I feel like there’s nothing I
can’t get through as long as I remain strong and keep the faith. EGL: We’ve seen you on television and you’ve been in the public eye for years… you’ve had to deal with a few different things while still being under a microscope-- Do you think you’ve learned anything about how to deal with media and managing personal life? Do you ever feel some type of way about being in the public eye, with everyone putting their two cent into your private matters? Toya: I mean being in the public eye is a gift and a curse to me; because sometimes as weird as it may sound, going through it publicly makes you stronger because it’s different when you’re going through things and only a few people know and you push through. But when you going through things and a lot of people know, it’s like the world knows your business, and your able to get through it and remain, you know what I mean, hold your head high and keep going and just keep pushing it just makes you even stronger. In my opinion EGL: So, it’s been all over the internet and the news - and you’ve been speaking real candidly about what you’re currently going through in your marriage, what made you decide to speak out about it? Toya: This is my take on it; the world we live in today, even if we don’t put your business out it seems to find its way out. And to me it’s better to come from the horse’s mouth than a bunch of strangers that’s trying to come up with a story. The fans they support me and I don’t really believe in being fake... Yes, there’s definitely something going on and I don’t want to paint the picture like my life is so perfect and I don’t have any issues or whatever. I go through things just like you go through thing so I’m dealing with mine. EGL: So do you feel like the situation has subsided
Feature
…how do you feel like it’s affected you…of course it a negative situation on the surface but what type of positivity have you been able to pull from what you’re going through now? Toya: Honestly, I’ve been able to really spend a lot of time with myself. Writing is therapeutic, even with my first book when I went through a whole lot of stuff I wrote. And I never knew that turning my life story into a book would be a New York Times Bestseller. I wrote it in a way where I was able to help and inspire and with this current book, it’s a little bit different but it’s still a book that will help other married women.
EGL: This is your second marriage, so when things started to fall apart or get tense with your second marriage, were you ever like my marriage might not work out here we go again, what was your experience with that. Toya: I hate failure you know what I mean and I just hate like having to go through this whole dating situation again of meeting somebody, like I love my husband and I really want to make things work with us and he has his own reasons and his own issues and things that’s going on… I just hate what we’re going through but I did I always get flashbacks because I’m like okay one failed marriage and now another one? But I have no

control over this one. It’s not me, it’s not cheating or anything like that it’s just some issues with him. So it’s totally different but I always think about that because I don’t want to be the women that just keep getting married. I don’t want to be that girl. EGL: Have you been able to speak with him recently? Toya: Yeah. We talked or whatever and we’re going to always be cordial no matter what. I’m just praying that everything work out. EGL: It’s been stated that you’ve said you still love him and you want to work things out, in your heart do you think that they will or

1. Boyz II Men feat. Brian McKnight– “Let it Snow.” Harmonious vocal chords united in this 1993 urban Christmas classic. Boyz II Men painted the ideal scene of raining sleet outside with a fire burning inside while you’re cuddled up with the one you love. Since tree trimming and love making is always the recipe for a perfect Christmas, this song will always be at the top of our holiday playlist!

2. Destiny’s Child- “8 Days of Christmas.” The holidays are always lovely and Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams broke it down as to why: Diamond belly rings, Chloe shades, foot rubs and back massages… oh my! This trio reminded us that Christmas isn’t just about receiving material gifts, but also spending quality time with your baby. Upbeat and fun, we’ll always lo-lo-lo-lolove this track!
CHRISTMAS PLAYLIST
3. R. Kelly- “Christmas, I’ll be Steppin.” A standout track on the Best Man Holiday Soundtrack, R. Kelly painted a vivid picture of celebrating a night of love at a party, grooving with family and friends. Of course, no Christmas party is complete without stepping and mistletoes, so with the appearance of both, R. Kelly captures the very essence of the holiday.

4. Chris Brown- “This Christmas.” Even though this song has been remade numerous times since 1970, Chris Brown made it his own in 2010. Starting off acapella with chords slowly being added throughout the first verse then fully coming together during the second, Chris made the holiday cheer emanate from the tip of our toes to the top of our heads. This version will not only make you to shake a hand but a tail feather with your boo thang.

7. The Temptation- “Silent Night.” Opening with a baritone voice and falsetto riffs, The Temptations version of “Silent Night” has transcended across generations due to their one-of-a-kind rendition. This very song sums up what Christmas is truly about: the Son of God and love’s pure light.
5. TLC- “Sleigh Ride.” From Christmas to New Year’s, the Crazy, Sexy, Cool threesome crooned well wishes to all on a New Jack Swing beat. Even Santa got into the TLC Christmas spirit while macking in his Cadillac. Putting fun back into the holidays, you can’t help but smile and fall into a jubilant mood courtesy of this track!

6. Mariah Carey- “All I Want for Christmas is You.” An eclectic mashup of the holiday classics “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” and “Joy to the World,” Mariah’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” was and still is one of the top played Christmas songs to date. Choosing time with her lover over gifts or even Christmas decorations, Mariah showed us the most important gifts are priceless. This song serves as a great reminder of what we should focus on during the holidays.
8. The Jackson 5 - “Give Love on Christmas Day.” This song spotlights the magical affect Christmas has on the world. The Jackson 5 believed that the gift of love being spread freely amongst strangers was exactly what the universe needs. Decades later, we agree! This song will forever be a relevant classic.
Entertainment
9. Eartha Kitt- “Santa Baby.” With sultry, sensual, and sexy throaty vocals, Eartha Kitt wanted Santa to know she was a good girl all year and deserved all the finer things. Not leaving anything up to chance, she told Santa baby exactly what she wanted: a duplex, checks and a ring. After all, she did give up kissing the fellas as an exchange!

10. Babyface – “White Christmas.” We’re pretty sure a baby boom ensued after this romantic rendition of “White Christmas.” Babyface sang this song with the smoothest tenor tone accompanied by jazz inspired triads and the outcome was nothing short of magical. Pair this with a glass of wine and a snowy scene outside your window, and you and your boo are in for a great Christmas night!

“Cuffing Season” is referred to as the months leading to winter and ending in the spring, just before the weather gets warm again. Jokingly called “the draft,” September is the time when singles seek potential mates to buckle down with for Cuffing Season. They leave behind their flirty, fly-by-night dating habits to become somewhat serious with just one individual, maybe even venturing into a relationship *gasp*. During Cuffing Season, the weather gets cooler and the desire to go out to mingle and party dwindles. Staying in, engaging in “Netflix and chill” and cuddling is the more sensible thing to do and it’s easiest to do it with just one person. This person may take you out here and there, go on brisk walks in the park with you or even plan dinner dates that lead to dessert by the fire. However, the moments out in the cold and snow will be few and far between. Naturally, it’s a nice feeling to have someone for the holidays to buy gifts for and to spoil. But there’s indeed a www.everythinggirlslove.com • Winter 2015

science to navigating Cuffing Season. Be sure to stay open to all of the possibilities when engaging in Cuffing Season. Although you may be entering the season with the mindset of only spending time with this person during the cold months, if things do take a more serious turn, don’t shy away from it! Who knows, you may fall in love! Whatever the case, be sure to keep a clear communication line open with your partner so you both are always aware of how the other is feeling. As you spend more time with your boo, ask yourself if the relationship is still just to pass time or are your feelings invested? If you still feel as though you’re only in it to get through the winter, you should definitely be honest and end the relationship. If you truly have feelings for him, start thinking about what you want the relationship to be like beyond Cuffing Season. You should also get rid of the “single woman” thoughts. Besides honesty, being mature about the situation is very important. Just because
“fish in the sea” are swarming doesn’t mean you should continue your flighty ways in order to see multiple people. At a certain age, it’s necessary to buckle down and realize that a season shouldn’t determine your loyalty to a relationship. Do you really want to go years and years in and out of relationships for a matter of momentary convenience? The answer should always be NO. Although today’s world has turned the dating game into a comical event like Cuffing Season, we must realize that meaningful relationships begin at any time of the year. Remember how great he made you feel during the holidays? Imagine how much better the holidays to come will be with him. The first time was just the beginning. So if all the right reasons are present, put the cuffs on and keep them on!

ith the winter holidays rapidly approaching, families are prepping for some delicious Thanksgiving dinner and decking the halls with boughs of holly for Christmas. Although we look forward to the family traditions of celebrating, we find ourselves in desperate need of a mental vacation. Typically, kids are spending a majority of their time in school and parents are working, so a winter vacation is definitely in order. Winter is the best time to take family vacations because, unlike summer, prices are lower and the numbers of crowds are decreased, which creates a less busy and less expensive season. You can get the most out of a winter vacation because you can have fun on a budget and get to spend some time with your loved ones. Here is a quick travel guide to help you explore some cost-friendly ways to save for that much-needed winter getaway and the top three cost-effective destinations: www.everythinggirlslove.com • Winter 2015
Book Early - Do your homework. Plan ahead. Do some research to figure out where you want to go (research includes choosing between the best accommodations, activities, tours and course of travel). Take some ideas from the kids, because, after all, they are going, too. You can get great, potential savings on airline fares and hotel fees when you book early. Redeem Miles and Points – Are you part of a frequent-flyer program? A frequent-flyer program is a
loyalty program offered by many airlines. Typically, airline customers enrolled in the program accumulate frequentflyer miles corresponding to the distance flown on that airline or its partners. Many credit card companies partner with these airlines to offer amazing deals and perks, so if you have been making purchases on that card, check with your card issuer to see if you accumulated any airline points. Your airfare can ultimately end up being FREE, best case scenario – a huge savings!
Create a Traveling Budget – Families thrive on creating budgets for their household – bills, food, gas,
etc. If you create a traveling budget, it will decrease the chances of you over spending on your vacation. Your traveling budget should consist of coverage for your hotels, food, activities, and transportation (airplane, driving, train, bus, rental cars, etc.)

EGL had a chance to chat with Demetria about her feelings regarding RHOA, her music career, working with R. Kelly and being a single mom. Boy, did she drop some gems!
Feature EGL: How has life been since NBA All-Star Weekend? That’s when we last caught up. Demetria: Life has been good since All-Star Weekend. It’s been very hectic. There’s been a lot of blessings flowing through. There’s been a lot of growth happening and I’m really happy with the space I’m in and looking forward to where we’re headed. The music is flourishing, projects are coming; I’m happy. EGL: Is music the main focus right now? I know you just came off of an acting audition, so are you still trying to do that intense balance of the two? Demetria: Music has always been my first love and getting the chance to really do it at the capacity that I’m doing now. With the album coming out, being signed to Entertainment One, touring with R Kelly - all of this stuff that’s happening has been a dream come true. Now being the single mom that I am and being the person I am, you never quit your day job until you have something real going on someplace else and I’ve really develop a love for acting. So yeah, I’m still doing my acting thing, but it’s just taking some time to have a balance. I think I’m finally getting the hang of that. EGL: Tell me about your experience touring with R Kelly. Demetria: The tour with R Kelly was a little bit different than the other ones I’ve done. I’ve been doing them with him for a few months now and he’s been so gracious. He’s super cool.
He’s actually treated me like an equal. Going to Chicago was a benefit for his music feature ... The way he came through the city for his feature, for his love of the craft [that the city] instilled in him was awesome. He did not make a money off of it. It was just so great and the love everybody showed him coming back home and giving to his own community like that ... it was electric, absolutely phenomenal. I got to see a couple of my Demetria show bills and took a moment there. The fire was on stage. He always gives it 100 percent and each time I go and do his tour, I make it point to sit and watch because I always learn something, every single time. I had so much fun. I really appreciate him trusting me enough to let me get up on stage before him like that. EGL: Did you have any reservations at first before you first time working with him? Demetria: Actually, no. I think that everything happens in the time it’s supposed to happen and I think that the Real Housewives of Atlanta situation [showed me not to judge] people before I actually get a chance to get in touch with them myself. I’m sure that there are going to be times when my publicist will introduce me to somebody and it’s like “oh, well she was on the Real Housewives of Atlanta. Absolutely not!” because they don’t necessarily like the brand or how it represents African American women. But if they actually take the time to look at how I represented us on there, it may change their mindset. So I’m a firm believer in getting to know somebody

[for] myself. We all have things in our closet that we’ve done. We all have things that we wish we could take back, but it still doesn’t stop the history of music that this man made. From Michael Jackson to Whitney Houston to Backstreet Boyz to now, the way he has surpassed what people think of music for as long as he has, nobody can take that away from him. His musical legacy is what I was looking at and what I was so honored to be a part of. Now, the man that I got to meet was an extra added bonus, just the sprinkles on the cupcake. I was there for the work. Now, I’m thankful that the work led to me getting to know a really great person. EGL: What has been the hardest thing for you with transitioning from acting to music? Demetria: As much of a juggling act [it is to] balance [everything], I’m always trying to figure out ways for me to do both and still do the mommy thing and everything else. It’s really hard. The hardest part for me has been making sure that I’m not giving people too much at one time. People think they know you based off a character [and] it may be difficult for people to realize Janene is not up on that stage. Demetria, the real live person who brought Janene to life is telling Demetria’s story. I didn’t want to alienate the people who have been following and supporting and really just loving me in my career growth, but give them a chance into my world, too. So it’s just been kind of tricky. You see it all the time with child stars. Seeing people try to transitions from a Rudy into

Feature a Keshia can be really difficult. I feel like even though it’s not in the same realm - just going from a child star into an adult star - I think transitioning to music as an actress it’s so different for people to comprehend. So I’m just trying to make sure that I take people in baby steps and still feed them real food. EGL: Before you signed up to do Real Housewives of Atlanta, what made you decide to do the show and use it as a platform to advance other goals? Demetria: First, I had to do an internal check. The parts of the[show] that I have seen, it was like people forgot they had all these skeletons in their closet or people felt that these skeletons were never going to be shown. So I really was prepared to be an open book [and] that I wasn’t ashamed of anything that may come out or what people may say. I needed to make sure that I was going to be comfortable in me regardless of what anybody else did. Two, I had to make sure I knew exactly what my down dues were. It’s really easy for some of those chicks on that show to make you crack. They push for that. They want that and the person that you give that power to is the most powerful person in the room. I didn’t want them to have power over me, period. The third part was the two men in my life; my son and my man, yes Rodger Bob and I are still together. But all three of us went in this with our eyes open as a unit; with the
www.everythinggirlslove.com • Winter 2015
determination that we were going to come out unbroken and not infamous. People join that game to get famous and they don’t understand that that’s not what [the show producers] are there for. They’re there to make their money and they don’t care what the buy product of that is as far as your life is concerned. It’s great whichever way it happens as long as they get their money. I was determined to come out with my family in tact and those two men are a big part of my life. [Doing the show] was an attempt of letting people know who I was. Like I said, Janene has been a big part of my life for a little over ten years now. The other characters that people have seen and loved me for, I appreciate them and it’s wonderful they know me by my work. Every time somebody calls me by my character’s name, yes, I will answer to your service. However; when you’re trying to make that transition and you have the opportunity to make that transition with the audience of 3.5 million plus each week; It’s an undeniable platform that you have to be really careful with and to get to the light at the end of that tunnel, you have to have tunnel vision. I knew I couldn’t get thrown into the shade. I knew I couldn’t be there for the fame and I knew I had to press play on each opportunity I had to have that music trivalent and present. EGL: Do you still feel that you’ll only return to reality television to promote your music?
Demetria: Absolutely, even more so now. Looking at how season seven ended and looking at how season eight seems to be beginning, I’m thankful for the lessons I learned on season seven. Season eight was just a season that I was not cut out for, but I think that reality television can be a great thing and I think that there’s not enough of it that actually shows positivity. We all have drama, natural built-in drama called life happening to each of us. All the contrived extras - hanging with people you don’t necessarily hang with, talking smack about somebody then going to eat with them - That’s not me. I’m in a situation right now where Carly George and I are doing some kind of cool stuff where people get the chance to see the full scope of who [me and my family] are; the good, the bad, the ugly, the fun, the struggles, the triumph, all of that because it can really be an encouraging tool. EGL: Why is it that they don’t create the story around real life? And around people that actually have lives? Why does it have to be these set up situations where all they’re doing is meeting up and fighting and meeting again and talking about the fight that just happened at the last meetup? Demetria: I think that reality television is a chronological statement for character setup. They don’t believe kumara works. They do not believe that sisterhood is relevant. They don’t believe
Feature that family is valuable. If you’re driving down 75 and there’s a bad accident on the road, everybody’s going to be breaking their necks to look at the terrible situation of somebody else, rather than focusing on the person right next to them screaming and thanking God that they got a promotion. They’re not going to pay any attention to that. They’re going to focus on the fire, the hell, the sadness, the tears, the ambulance. They’re going to watch all of that and then they’re going to create more drama because they’re not paying attention to their own lives and it’s sad. We focus so heavily on negativity because people buy into it. If we would stop watching it so heavily, guess what? They change the format. EGL: Where do you draw your inspiration from for your music? Demetria: Life. It happens every day. I can’t imagine what Beyoncé goes through in life off stage and has to go on and put on this persona. That’s her gig and her job is to be Beyoncé. We have the exact same situations as anybody else and I want to express that in my music and I want it to be relatable. So if you’re going through that then press play. [My music] helps you get through it. It’s all about the get through for me. EGL: Before you were signed, were you nervous that you may have to change who you are? Did you have any sort of nervous reservations? Demetria: I came to the label with an EP ready. They heard me and they knew they liked what I had. What people don’t know is that Roger has been the machine [behind me] for five years. We’ve been working on music forever so I got a chance to cultivate who I was. I got a chance to get to know who I wanted to be as an artist. Everybody is always evolving and growing, so I learned from those opportunities of growth. When
I came to Entertainment One, they knew what they liked who Demetria was. So that was like half the battle [that] I won. I’ve heard so many horror stories about how, “I came in and they wanted to change me.” We didn’t have [to go] through that. I’m really thankful. The process has been much easier than I ever anticipated, but I think it’s because I was so transparent and I was giving my all. You’re better being something you are then anybody else. I was grateful that Entertainment One saw that and accepted it. We still make sure that Demetria McKinney is still working on behalf of Demetria McKinney and I think that gives them more intention to do what they do as well. EGL: How do you feel about the current state of R&B? Demetria: The current state of R&B is undefined. You can’t say it’s gone because it’s everywhere. It’s embedded everywhere. But getting down to the core of it, it may be a little unrecognizable or not as accepted because we are in a place of Hip-Hop. Mainstream R&B is now Hip-Hop. I wouldn’t say that it’s a lost art, but it’s an evolving art and I think that people just really [have to] pay attention to the diversity in music and getting back to the core of where it came from. I don’t think that people necessarily pay attention to the foundation as much as they do the building. There’s just so many different flavors of R&B and I think that people are just limiting themselves to one kind of flavor and that’s just that. EGL: What has been your top three favorite collaborations so far? Demetria: First, was Musiq Soulchild. I got with Musiq Soulchild as he was making his transition into taking more control over his music. Meaning, he wanted to produce. In the process, he was willing to teach me some of the basics as easy as if he was just

talking to a toddler about how he develops his music and how he thinks about music. His mind is so intricate and people just don’t understand how much he’s done. Just [learning] the technical [side] to it [from] someone I’ve been listening to forever is awesome. Two, would be Lyfe Jennings. I’ve listened to his music for ever. He may not be on a Michael Jackson level to some people. He may not be in that place but he writes from an organic mindset. He puts passion behind his music and was willing to work with an artist who wasn’t established. He believed in me enough to ask me to [be on his single]. I absolutely appreciate him and I would love to work with him again. We had so much fun on the video. He’s pulled me up to perform with him live. It’s just a great vibe with him. The third one I would have to say is Brat. That was like one of the first very big things I did. We got all the way to number four on iTunes. There aren’t that many females out there doing what Nicki Minaj is doing or doing what Brat did. Brat accomplished a lot and she still has that fire. She came in the studio super humble, super cool. I was a nervous wreck and she was like, “don’t think about it, Demetria.” It was a true www.everythinggirlslove.com • Winter 2015
collaborative effort from somebody I consider a rap legend. So that was awesome. Her support meant everything. EGL: If you could work with three people in the future, dead or alive, who would they be? Demetria: R Kelly, Drake, and Whitney Houston. I think that [Drake] has such a flow about him and he has such a vulnerability to his music, which makes it really strong. I love that he just has his own way. His lyrical content is amazing. R Kelly knows what’s jumping threw your mind. He’s part of the matrix I don’t know how he does it. I don’t know how he translates from Backstreet Boyz to Whitney Houston. For me, Whitney Houston was my news for music. She made me want to sing. She got me through so much in my life. Music was my shelter and that shelter had a roof of Whitney over it. If there was ever an opportunity [to work with her], I would have taken it and ran. EGL: What do you have coming up for the rest of this year that you want people to know about? Demetria: We’ve got the music coming out. If anybody saw season seven of RHOA, they saw me
ask Kandi Burrus if we can work together and she was like “oh, I don’t really think I want [that]”. But turns out she came and saw one of my performances and asked me if I was still working on the album and she’s [now] executive producing it. It’s been great working with her. Officially Yours will be out at the top of the year; that’s my album. The single coming out is a duet with she and I and that will be out soon, too. I also have a couple of business ventures that I’m working on. I have a tea coming out that I’m [working on] with Village Tea, as well as a fur line from Mano Swartz which will be out Fashion Week in February. Coming to the Grave is a movie I did with Aaron Henson and Atlanta recording artist, Terrence Jackson, coming up soon and it’s really kind of dealing with some of the stuff we deal with in real life in our inner city. It’s written by Michael P Williams. Those are the main things, as well as touring with R Kelly and we have to do about 40 something more cities before the end of the year. Thank you to the Demetrians for the continuous support and the love and the prayers and the encouragement

Def Jam’s First Female Artist Dishes on Her Passion for Fitness
Interview By: Kanarian Kindred
Nikki D, the first female artist signed to Def Jam, is a force to be reckoned with. With over twenty years’ experience, she remains relevant in an industry dominated by her male counterparts. Most importantly, she has proven a female MC can obtain various levels of success without being in the constant limelight. She is currently taking over the fitness world with her new business STRONG FITNESS. A program comprised of healthy eating, living and fitness. Without further ado I introduce to you the founder of STRONG FITNESS, Nikki D. www.everythinggirlslove.com • Winter•2015 www.everythinggirlslove.com Winter 2015
Wellness EGL: How did you get into fitness? Nikki D: I’ve always been one to workout, go hard for about year, then fall back. That’s been my way for years, some would call it the yo- yo effect. However in 2011, a trainer approached me at Bally’s gym and offered to train me. I felt I could use the help and since he was sincerely offering from the heart I figured, OK, I’d try it since I had never been trained before. The first few sessions I was trying to figure out where he was going with it, because I had never seen the methods he was using, especially since we were training in the studio with no weights in a gym full of them. I was sweating, getting tired, the workouts were intense, and after maybe two weeks, I was hooked. I learned military style workouts, bodyweight training, and every now and then we’d go upstairs and use the weights. My body started changing almost immediately, I was getting strong and my endurance was way up, I loved it. Come to find out, Peter Sinclair (Trainer) was also a Marine and while most people who’ve never tried boot camp style workouts don’t go near them, he had a way of making you feel like it wasn’t that bad. However, it’s still for those that want it and not the faint at heart. Fast forward to my 60-pound weight loss, Peter opened a gym named Core Assets Fitness with 2 other partners in east Harlem and hosted weight loss competitions, which I won two of and came in second place during the third
one. During this time, I got more fit than I’ve ever been in my life. I learned how to push myself from the intense workout classes at their gym, as well as how to eat to truly transform my body. I went from 217 pounds to 155 pounds in one year exactly, all natural, no gimmicks, crack diets or pills. Pure and natural is how I did it along with some amazing training. EGL: What are some key factors people should know before starting a fitness program? Nikki D: Well, now that I’ve started training people, I find a lot of people aren’t fit to do what I did. Not because I’m some sort of super woman, but simply because everyone is built differently, have different strengths and weaknesses, as well as [different] physical ailments that stop them from performing at their very best. I find some of my clients need modified versions of the exercises. [So], if you haven’t worked out in the past six months with a consistent program, it’s best to get an assessment first, either with your physician or a professional trainer. Don’t assume because you haven’t been injured before that it can’t happen, especially if you choose to enter into a vigorous workout program to become fit.
to make any change in your life and this is no different. Come up with short sensible goals initially, goals that won’t turn you off because they take too long or seem complicated. Don’t look to lose 30 pounds immediately; try 5 to 10 pounds, and once you reach that goal, don’t stop. Educate yourself on different workouts, food programs, subscribe to fitness blogs or follow your favorite trainer on Instagram ie, me @ strong_isfitness lol. Honestly, there is no quick way to getting fit, it’s a lifestyle change and once you’ve learned how to eat and get focused on working out. It will get easier, but you have to really give yourself a solid chance. Nothing worth having comes easy so get ready to work! EGL: Nutrition is key when it comes to fitness and healthy living. What tips can you give to those interested in eating healthier?
EGL: What’s the best way for someone to motivate herself to get fit?
Nikki D: When it comes to healthy eating, it’s simple, eat healthy. What does every girl want? A great body! You’ve probably heard this before and I’ll reiterate it, eating is 70 percent of your weight loss and working out is the other 30 percent. Let me say this, fat makes you fat. There are various forms of fat in our faces every day; in our coffee shops, bodegas, grocery stores, fast food chains, I mean fat is everywhere.
Nikki D: In order to motivate yourself and not fall off the wagon, you have to want it from the heart. You can’t fake this kind of stuff; you have to be ‘bout it! It takes discipline and passion
So how do you eat right? Learn to eat whole foods, not from the actual store but whole foods that are cooked and not popped out of packages. Frankly stated, a quick bite from the fast food

You could never go wrong with blonde tresses paired with rich deep colors. Whether rocking your blonde hair bayalage, ombre or with highlights, these color techniques are always stylish and looks good on several skin tones. Curly blondes are a option if you don’t want to color your own hair. Try purchasing virgin hair extensions and have a hairstylist color your hair to flatter your skin tone. Make sure you get an expert service when coloring hair, you don’t want to have your hair turn ginger or orange due to inexperience (yikes!). These nail colors are already available from O.P.I and MAC! You could also find cheaper brands at ULTA and other beauty stores.

Lyfe Jennings: It’s a day to day thing. One of the most important things to me

is that you get used to the things you do. You are what you do the most. As you start spending more time with your kids, you get used to spending time with them. A lot of times, a father won’t spend time with his kids because he’s gotten used to not being around them; he set-up his whole life not including his kids. But as you include your kids, more and more, it will become inseparable from how you walk and how you move. So my advice would be to add your kids into your daily plan and just watch what happens. EGL: At one point, you were working on a reality show. Can we still expect that? Lyfe Jennings: Not that particular reality show but we have some other things in the works. With the previous one, the show kept turning as we did more episodes. They needed more drama and I wasn’t going to let them pimp me or my family. We weren’t going to sell our story to the highest bidder. EGL: Switching gears! We’re going to dig into your personal life a little bit. You’re definitely rock candy status, what do you think draws women to you? Lyfe Jennings: I listen to them, even when they’re on that BS. What I
see with women is they don’t really want your opinion; they just want you to listen so they can work it out for themselves. Even though we’re men, sometimes we have to grab our pom-poms out the closet. You have to cheer growth instead of always trying to lead someone in a direction that may have worked for you. You have to allow them room to breathe and grow themselves.
Lyfe Jennings: Two things: Number one, my new single “I Love You” is out. It’s rare that I release a love song because I’m always talking about situations but I wanted to switch it up this time. “I Love you” is just telling a woman what she means to me with a little wordplay. Secondly, I want to tell these females to stop wearing these dirty tennis shoes…that shit ain’t nice. I don’t appreciate that.
EGL: What do you look for in a EGL: Can we expect a video for “I woman? Love You?” Lyfe Jennings: I want her to have her own shit. I want a woman I don’t have to tell how to act. I get into situations with women and they’ll do something and I’m like you can’t teach that. Your mama had to teach you that. And if you don’t know, I really don’t have time to drive and yellow bus you back and forth to school because I have a whole life. You have to come to the table with your spoon and fork. I don’t want to go into the cupboard having to find you knives and all that.
Lyfe Jennings: Yeah, we’re about to rock a video for that in the next couple of weeks. We want to let the song get out there first. Lyfe Jennings continues to heal the world with his impact through music. With a reality television show and new album on the horizon, we’re soon to witness a slight shift of the entertainment industry norms. Don’t forget to grab a copy of Tree of Lyfe on June 23rd!
EGL: Great! Well we touched on your music, parenting, and rock candy status. Do you have anything else to add?

Surviving The Top 3 Holiday Stresses
It’s that time of year again, the holidays. You’re either smiling at the thought or frowning at the stresses to come. The parties, gift exchanging and family events can maybe turn you into the Grinch. Therefore, before you go fa la la la nah, here are some tips to get you through the holidays like a champ.
1- Holiday Events Those endless invitations are pouring in (gift buying, making or buying a dish to bring, your own event and your day to day life) making it impossible to do it all. Don’t overextend yourself and commit only to traditions and events you look forward too. Avoid committing to more than one event on the same day. Remember to do the things that you enjoy doing during the holidays. It’s those traditions you will look forward to year after year. Everything else is optional. www.everythinggirlslove.com • Winter 2015

3- Gift Shopping 2- Holiday Depression For many of us this time can be the saddest time of the year. One of the main sources of holiday depression is family. Many people associate the holidays with memories good and/or bad. Here are some contributing factors to holiday depression:
want you depressed during the holidays? Follow traditions and carry on in their name.

Long lines, crowded malls and cold weather are not the only stresses to gift shopping. Finding and affording the right gifts is another holiday stress. It’s the thought that counts and I mean that literally. Don’t put a dent in your wallet trying to make others materialistically happy during the gift giving seasons. Also, plan ahead, have a list prepared and buy gifts as early as possible. So while everyone else is hitting packed malls on the weekends, you are sipping eggnog by the tree at home.

Regardless of your preferred lane, applying the flare to your genre is what really makes you chic and we will show you exactly what we mean. So remember, ‘tis the season to be jolly, but let’s not forget stylish! Let’s start things off with a style board catering to the most relevant and focal woman of our day; The Mommy.
Fashion
The new-day mommy isn’t just your local soccer mom or unofficial team cheerleader anymore. She is a woman who wears many hats and has many different moves to make throughout the course of her busy day. She’s in need of stylish-versatility capable of carrying her morning errands into evening engagements without missing a beat.
For her, we’ve kept things simple yet festive placing her in an easy cotton swing dress, leopard flats and red bucket tote. To take her up a notch, we subtly accessorized her look with rock studded earrings and a gold statement necklace. Now she can be both mommy and stylish! Next, we move onto our business woman who shows up and show out anytime she isn’t required to wear a suit. She is our Legal Eagle.

Staying on top of trends is her business and is something she takes seriously. With that, we placed her in a holiday-red jumpsuit, gold-strapped court pumps and chunky gold watch. Accessorizing her in an oversized fedora and large clutch, seamlessly completes her look without blinking an eye. Our fourth woman of the hour is a lady who prides herself on fashion. She lives and breathes it, making it the center of her universe. She is labeled with the well-known title of: The Fashionista.
The business woman can’t always be all business, right?! She lives and thrives in the boardroom but is ready to step out on the town at all times. She has a classy swank about her that people hardly ever get to see and she loves putting it on display, when given the opportunity. For this type of woman, opulence goes a very long way. So, we put her in a nude flared trench, lace bodycon dress and leather stiletto shoe. Her accessories are simple; sporting gold toned, pearl earrings and metallic envelope clutch; she instantly WOWS on entry. Jumpsuit: BCBG, $298; Hat: Rag & Bone, $280; Clutch: Vivienne Westwood, $165; Shoes: Zara, $70; Watch: Michael Kors, $198

Now, the fashionista isn’t a woman who needs any help getting her swag on point, and creating ideas for the next big thing isn’t something she shies away from. That said, we adorned our girl in a belted fur top, sequined pencil skirt and nude pumps. Her accessories consist of a Marsala colored clutch, crystal studs and stacked bracelets. Over-the-top style is what she lives for and also what she considers to be her way of life. And finally, we showcase our everyday woman. She’s a woman who revels in comfort and simplicity. This woman is what we like to call our Lady of Comfort.
Our third style board is dedicated to the woman out in town. The blogger, the stylist, the media personality who is always in the spotlight and realizes how important fashion really is. every girl loves m Reginae Carter
Daughter of rap legend Lil Wayne and reality TV star and New York Times Best Selling Author, Toya Wright, Reginae Carter is no stranger to fame. Although one may think it would be difficult not fall in the shadows of her parents’ success, Reginae shines brightly in her own right. She sat down with EGL to talk about what her life is really like, being a business woman at such a young age and the pressures of being in the spotlight. EGL: So you have been a busy little superstar lately, you had a super successful show for MTV’s Super Sweet 16. How was that experience for you? What was that like and what was turning 16 about? Reginae: Well, I’ve always loved the show Sweet 16, I always watched it when it used to come on, and for them to bring it back just for me is a huge honor. I was very excited when I got the news and I just still thank MTV, because I’ve always wanted to have a big, outrageous sweet 16 and I wanted to have it on that show. My parents made it happen and I am very thankful. EGL: So what are you planning to do for your 18th? Or what do you want to do? Reginae: Well for my 18th I would like to go out of the country with like a few of my friends. I don’t really want to do anything that big. Because I’ve had a lot of big parties, like every year I’ve had a big party. So now I just want to chill until I guess, 21. EGL: Let me just tell you, 21 is an amazing age … So you’re
F
Feature not new to reality television at all; do you like doing it? Do you want to continue being on tv or is it just fun for now? Reginae: I feel like it was a great experience with all of the reality shows I’ve been on. You know I had the opportunity to be on some, but I don’t want to be on a reality show. I feel like the only camera I would want to be around next is a camera that’s telling me “action!” I want to act I don’t really want to do reality. EGL: Sometimes we hear about childhood stars or celebrities wishing that they had a normal life. Do you ever feel like you’re missing out on something that other teenagers are able to do? Reginae: Well, I’ve been going to regular school until now; this is my first year [being] homeschooled. I do a homeschool program now, but I don’t feel like I miss out on a lot because up until 10th grade, I was in regular school with my peers. So I had the dances and you know the drama of course, the friends, I’ve had all of that. I lived that life. Even though I’m a celebrity kid and I’m in the public eye my parents still kept me grounded and humble and made sure I had a normal life. EGL: Both of your parents are successful and famous and you have a huge family. How do you think that has influenced you as person? Reginae: Well having successful parents has influenced me a lot because it taught me to have tough skin with hearing so many rumor about my parents and myself. It’s just like I grew up around it and I’m used to it now but it definitely taught me to have tough skin. It also taught me to follow my dreams and believe in myself and you know keep striving for the best. EGL: You’ve really become a businesswoman at a very early age with all of the things that www.everythinggirlslove.com • Winter 2015 www.everythinggirlslove.com • • Winter Winter 2015 www.everythinggirlslove.com 2015
you have going on. What do you enjoy most out of all the things that you do? Reginae: My favorite part has to be just performing. I love giving a show! I love showing people my personality, acting and singing. EGL: If you had to choose between acting, singing, or having a ton of businesses, which one would you choose? Reginae: You know what? I feel like there’s never enough, there’s never too much. If I can do it all, I would want to. I want to leave this world with people saying, “wow she started so young and she’s accomplished so many things.” I was a young entrepreneur at the age of 15, I’ve written a book, and the possibilities are endless. I believe I can do it all; I don’t want to ever die down I want to keep my name relevant. EGL: Do you ever feel like you have a lot of pressure on you because of who your parents are? Reginae: I definitely feel like there’s some type of pressure. Like not too long ago I posted something on Instagram saying [that] every thing that I do is going to be, “oh because she’s Lil Wayne’s daughter or because I’m Toya’s daughter,” and it’s like I’ve learned that of course they are going to say that because my parents platform is so big. At the end of the day, when I’m done with what I have to do; I’m getting acknowledged for it and I’m getting paid for it. Not my parents. Yes they are a huge deal with everything that I do; they help me. They are great parents you know. They just push me forward if I want to do this, they taught me to always believe in what you want, and to not ever give up. That’s one thing about my parents … I will never give up because of them. They are huge supporters! EGL: Okay so last time I checked, I don’t know if you still have one, but do you still have a boyfriend right now?
I just want to chill until I guess, 21 F
I’m working on my brand as well as trying to get my no bullying campaign up.
Feature
Reginae: No…I don’t have a boyfriend EGL: What happened? Reginae: I just decided, I’m working on my different projects and I’m very young. You know like I said I want to make a name for myself and I feel like I have a lot of time to date. I don’t have time for it. EGL: So, how do you balance everything you do with work while managing to have a social life? Reginae: Well one thing about my group of friends that I have is that they are so supportive. So with my work I feel like when I’m working my friends are always there. They’re always right there cheering me on and supporting me. On the other hand, sometimes I can’t make it everywhere [if] I have to do an event. It’s such a blessing to have friends that support me. All my friends are pretty supportive and we are all doing something. EGL: So describe one rule, or just one thing that your parents have for you that never changes no matter how old or successful you get. Reginae: One rule ummm well.. I would have to say school and respect. Education in my house, education is very big. Like even though I don’t live with my father, my father still texts me or calls me every night like did you do your homework? You good? Education is really big, and respect as

well. Always respect them and get good grades, you know, and I’ll get the world. EGL: Describe how your relationship is with your mom, do you ever see your mom in yourself? Reginae: I feel like me and my mom have a lot of similarities. You know, just being around her my whole life so I’ve definitely picked up some traits from her. Actually a lot of them, me and my mom are a lot alike. She thinks I’m more like my dad but I think I’m more like her. EGL: So you have so many ventures, including being an advocate for ending violence and your book, clothing line, and music; so what else do you have going on right now? Reginae: Well, I have like you just said my clothing line. I’m working on my brand as well as trying to get my no bullying campaign up. Plus I’m getting more people to join the hush club, which is to silence negativity and always know yourself and don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do. I’m also starting to get into acting. Like I said, I really want to start trying out for movies. Little movie parts and probably like tv shows and guest appearances. Stuff like that.
Reginae: Yes, that is on hold after dealing with all of the label and all of that; but I’m still in the studio. EGL: Is that like super annoying or is it like I understand; y’all get it together! Reginae: I understand, you know, I understand it was business before everything happened. My father already had plenty of talks about the business with me and I don’t want to get into that. So you know, if I’m on hold, I’m on hold. EGL: I’m sure your father gives you plenty of great advice pertaining to the industry. So I was watching your interview on Wendy Williams a few months ago, and you talked a little bit about the situation that’s going on with your dad and Birdman. Has that affected your relationship that you had with Birdman’s daughter?
EGL: I could definitely see you on the big screen. As far as your new music and your album are concerned, is that kind of on hold right now?
F
Feature
Reginae: Actually no. Ever since that’s been happening I’ve seen Bria a lot of times actually. Everytime I go to Miami I make sure I get with Bria. We’re close and we’re going to always remain close. Like I said on business and that’s between my pyranWHAT DOES THIS MEAN? and my father. That has nothing to do with the bond that I’ve made with my god sister and also my god brother. EGL: That’s great to know! So, like I was trying to mention before with the mentoring program, Push, did you have a mentor growing up outside of your family? Reginae: No, not really. Not at all…. Well you know what my security, my bodyguard. He tells me a lot about life. He’s like my mentor; if there is someone outside of my family that’s a mentor it would have to be him. EGL: You’re a mentor to a lot of young girls. Whether you’re mentoring them directly or they’re just looking up to you as a result of all the positive things they see you doing. How important is it to you to be a positive role model for other young girls? Reginae: It’s very important to me. I feel like it’s an honor for so many kids to look up to me. I would come in the cafeteria and all of the kids used to run up to me and give me hugs. Throughout any school I’ve been through I always had a talk with my parents, like listen it’s a lot of kids that look up to you. You gotta make sure that you’re positive because they’re looking at you. We definitely have to keep our eye out for this celebrity kid. The world will definitely be seeing more of Reginae Carter very soon. m

Outdoor Holiday lights are always festive, but who has the money to update each year and be creative. This cute idea is not only fun and different; it’s easy on the wallet! What you’ll need: Corsage boxes, string of lights, scissors, wire or pipe cleaners to fasten, wire cutters, cellophane rolls in different colors, tape What to do: 1 Measure and cut 18x 18″ of cellophane 2. Wrap string of lights with cellophane piece. Note: leave out beginning and end of the string lights for you to connect to the next piece of candy and your power source. This also creates the “crackle” of the candy. 3. Place the lights in the corsage box and secure and wrap up a larger cellophane piece around the corsage box to create a candy shape. Close with tape on one side. 4. Secure at each end of each side of the corsage box. 5. Leave spaces between each “piece” of candy so you can see some of the lights. Repeat till the strand runs out. Plug in and light up your candy!
