The Harris' The beautiful love story of Clifford and Tameka Harris aka “TI and Tiny” has expanded into one about a big happy family. Since getting together in 2001 and tying the knot in 2010, the couple has dealt with hardships involving T.I.’s legal problems and two prison sentences; however, they managed to reverse the negative perception that most people have of a rapper’s home life. In December of 2011 the couple embarked on a new journey as they allowed cameras to document the daily life within the Harris Household. “T.I. And Tiny: The Family Hustle” has captivated audiences for 3 seasons over the past couple of years, as Mr. and Mrs. Harris successfully balance their relationship, being good parents, and of course, handling

their careers. While Tiny manages her oldest daughter, Zonnique Pullins who is a part of her R&B group, OMG Girlz, T.I. guides his sons into their career paths. Following in his dad’s footsteps, we constantly see Domani Harris chase his dream of being a performer. The couple also goes through the normal growing pains with Messiah Harris and T.I.’s daughter, Deyjah (who both show an interest in dating). Then there’s King and Major who are still mommy’s babies but learn valuable lessons from their father as they grow up. It is literally a Family Hustle when it comes to the Harris’. As Tameka and TIP continue to instill the values and morals that they live by they are in the process of creating successful futures for their children.

The SIMMONS' The Simmons Family proved that positivity was the right way to go when “Run’s House’ debuted on MTV in 2005. After taking the Hip Hop world by storm in the 80’s, Reverend Run and his wife Justine Simmons opened up their family life to the public for four years. Often sought out for spiritual guidance by his peers in the industry, it was clear that Revs inspirational messages were lessons that he truly lived by and passed on to his own children. Also having longevity in his marriage to Justine, the one thing that stays apparent within this family is unity and support. As most young adults can relate to Vanessa, Angela and Jojo (Rev’s three older children from a previous relationship) and young teens, Russell and Daniel (aka “Diggy”), they have all managed to stay on the right path due to their strong family foundation. The different relationships within the family (Including that tough love and business sense from their uncle, media mogul, Russell Simmons) have really displayed how much they value one another. Now that Vanessa has publicly announced her pregnancy, and how she shared the news with her father, it’s pretty safe to say that his values will be passed on to her son or daughter. Runs House definitely created a platform for the Simmons children to succeed. Despite his own dreams of becoming a rapper, JoJo has made it clear that he will always support his younger brother, Diggy, who is maturing into a successful music career. Angela has become a thriving businesswoman along with her sister. (Can we say Hustlaprenuers?!) The three are often seen working and supporting each other which shows that the family bond has remained strong.

The Wayans www.everythinggirlslove.com

It can’t be argued that the Wayans Family has collectively mastered the art of comedy throughout their existence in the entertainment world. From sitcoms, to stand up to a string of hilarious movies, they have achieved major success that continues to live on through today’s generation. With a total of ten siblings in the first generation, there is a huge amount of enormous talent. Starting off with Keenan Ivory Wayans, who created “In Living Color” along with his brother Damon. In later years, members of the family have all reached their peak of success at different times. Shawn and Marlon have taken the spotlight while becoming a successful duo. Kim, who is the only sister out of the ten, is a hilarious comedian who has continued to act and work on her own projects. As some siblings often stay behind the scenes as producers and directors, the family has definitely put their stamp on pop culture. Although they all lead private lives, the closeness within the Wayans clan is very apparent. Throughout most of their projects, the running theme is often family oriented, which could be the major key to their success! As the younger side of the family carries out their legacy with shows like “Second Generation Wayans”, there is no doubt that they will continue to be a major force within the industry.

THE smiths

www.everythinggirlslove.com

When it comes to the quintessential Hollywood family, there’s really one clan that comes to mind off first thought: The Smiths! With daddy Will Smith, who just happens to be one of the highest paid actors of all time, backing the entire clan which includes his beautiful actress/musician wife Jada Pinkett-Smith, DJ son Trey (whom Will had with his first wife Sheree Fletcher) actor son Jaden and all-around artist and fashionista daughter, Willow. No one can deny the talents of this multifaceted family. They are considerably one of today’s most public and fascinating families. From movies to music to fashion, they’ve got it all locked down! What’s so beautiful about The Smiths is the families’ obvious connection to their morals and values, and never comprising that for the price of fame. Whether you agree with Will and Jada’s marriage or the way they raise their children; they have built a solid foundation of love, SUPPORT and purpose (fulfilling it, to achieve your level of success). We see them on fabulous vacations together around the world, starring in each other’s projects; music videos and films, and hitting red carpets in support of a fam members’ endeavor. The togetherness is there and seemingly always will be. Ain’t nobody messing with The Smiths clique!

THE COMBS

www.everythinggirlslove.com

Anything Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs has his name attached to we can assure greatness will emerge out of it! So of course, when the super mogul had children, they’d be nothing short of greatness themselves! Each of Diddy’s six children - five biological (sons, Justin and Christian and daughters, Chance and twins D’Lila and Jessie) and one “informal” stepchild (Quincy) - are from three previous relationships he’s had over the years. Although his children don’t all have the same mothers, Diddy made a conscious effort from the beginning to not only bring all of the kids (and their mommies) together by having designated “Daddy” weekends, but by also creating a unique family dynamic, that while isn’t traditional, it works for The Combs clan. As his eldest son, Justin, headed to UCLA on a full football scholarship, the majority of the fam headed to the West Coast as well and Chance, who lives in ATL, visits frequently! Quincy and Christian seem to be following their dad’s footsteps as his stepson has already entered the music game and his mini-me is a young mogul in the making. His cute little girls just did their FIRST runway show and by the looks of it are going to rock the fashion world in the next couple of years. Forever their number one fan, and vice versa, Diddy’s bond with each of his children is special. With singer girlfriend Cassie by his side, entrepreneurial kiddies keeping him on his toes and their beautiful mommies helping him along the way, Diddy has built HIS modern Hollywood family!

THE CREWS

www.everythinggirlslove.com

Who doesn’t love Terry Crews and his blended family? We can’t get enough of them! If you weren’t familiar with Crews during his NFL days then you of course know him from his current job as an actor! As for his family, we were introduced to the eclectic & comedic group during their two season BET reality series, The Family Crews. The kids, Naomi Burton-Crews (stepdaughter), Azriel, Tera, Wynfrey, and Isaiah, range from eight to 24 years-old. With his wife a.k.a. momma hen of the bunch, Rebecca Crews, overseeing all of the daily family drama, Terry has his hands full devoting time to his career and remaining focused on the fam. This was ever so prevalent when Naomi became pregnant in her early 20’s, as played out on the show, and needed her family’s full support. It was second nature for the fairly famous clan as they rallied behind the eldest during her pregnancy and after baby Miley (who’s now a toddler) was born. From Naomi’s pregnancy to actress/singer Azriel wanting to go across the country to attend NYU (which she did and is currently enrolled) to Rebecca’s budding gospel career, and even Terry’s career, the common denominator in their family’s ability to keep the strong bond alive is unconditional love. No matter what, they’ll have each other’s backs and that’s just The Crews’ way of living and loving! m

Claudette Ortiz Claudette Ortiz Dispels All City High Break Up and Love Triangle Rumors, Gives her Thoughts on “R&B Divas: LA” By Chey Parker

www.everythinggirlslove.com

It’s not easy being the EGL woman, but one woman who appears to do it with ease is Claudette Ortiz. Best known for her beautiful voice in the music group “City High,” her acting role in “My Wife and Kids,” and her most recent spot as a lady of “R&B Divas: LA”, Ortiz is a woman of many talents; silently planning to take the entertainment world by storm. Ortiz sits down with EGL for a nice long chat about life, the truth behind her City High days and what she’s setting her sights on now.

erutaeF

Feature Everyone knows that you’re a cast member of “R&B Divas: LA.” What were some of the factors you weighed before confirming being a cast member? Well many of the things that were important to me were things that had to do with my children. I was also watching the first season to see if it was a more positive reality show because I never wanted to do any kind of crazy reality show where it was just drama. Of course I prayed about it and I consulted my friends and family. Ultimately, it ended up being a great idea. You stayed very neutral, but very real in your position about the entire situation with Kelly Price on the show. What was your stance? Originally when we were all doing the play, and we were talking about the director and everything else, I think there was just miscommunication. I wasn’t there for the major disagreements. As you saw on the show, my daughter had an accident and I was handling that. It was a very, very tragic moment so I wasn’t thinking about the monologues at all. It wasn’t until I watched more of the episodes and talked with the ladies that I was able to piece together what had happened. You can’t really tell completely from watching the episodes because things can be edited, but my reason for remaining neutral was because I didn’t have any beef with anyone. I don’t have an opinion about something if I don’t know all the factors involved. There are things that are behind the scenes that the viewers didn’t see to better understand what was going on. It was a little strange in some parts but at the end

www.everythinggirlslove.com

of the day, any of the misunderstandings or beef was minor to me. It was interesting to see how the public reacted to Kelly and how she was portrayed on the show. What were your feelings when you saw that? I felt bad for Kelly. I know how it feels to be ridiculed and scrutinized. I didn’t want that for any of the ladies on the show. Although, I do understand that she is a grown woman and she makes her own choices and she is in the public eye. I’ve only known Kelly for a short amount of time. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and I do know that she’s been through a lot and there was confusion going on behind the scenes. I’m sure she’ll get things back together as far as her image is concerned. What everyone wants to know is, is the show real or fake. I want the truth, the real deal. The nitty gritty. You can confirm or deny.

As far as I’ve seen, mostly everything is organic and genuine...there was no scripting or anything like that. Prior to taping, we weren’t all ladies going to each other’s houses. That’s obviously something that has to be scheduled, but as far as the content, that was real. What are some misconceptions that you think people may have about you from the show? I heard that I’m sad. I’m not sad. I’m actually very, very happy. I was definitely rebuilding

and coming out of a rough place in my life, but I was very happy to be there and I was just being observant. I was getting to know the ladies, getting to know the cameramen and everybody else behind the scenes, really trying to see what we were doing and how. I’ll observe things before I let my whole personality out to people who I don’t know because really everybody was a stranger to me. So is it safe to say that you’re happy that you guys could come together with the people who did choose to do it and put on the monologues? Yes. I believe that things go how they’re supposed to go. I absolutely would have loved Dawn and Kelly to be in it. They’re amazing just as artists and it just sucked that things didn’t go as happy-go-lucky the way we wanted it to but ultimately it turned out great. I loved the players that were in it and I loved that we chose Fred. Fred was absolutely amazing at what he did. We all know that you were a part of City High, which everybody completely loved and they were like “Who is that girl?” and then we finally found out who you were. What was it like being so young and being a part of a group and being nominated for a Grammy? It was like putting a kid who never drove onto a racetrack. That’s the best way I can explain it. I had to learn fast. I didn’t have any parents with me. I didn’t have a momager or anything like that. So, I kind of had Photo courtesy offreddyo.com

Feature to learn on my own. It was difficult. I also had to see a lot of craziness as well. It was definitely a ride. Did you ever kind of go between thinking “I want to do this. This is my passion. This is what I wanna do.” to kind of saying “Yea, this is my passion. I want to do this but...I don’t know.”

Oh I love the pressure. I don’t mind at all. It’s better than nothing so I’m actually excited. I’m ready to go in and give my fans whatever they want to hear.

I didn’t feel like that until later on, after I had kids, and I felt like it was an

inconsistent paycheck and I had to take care of my kids. I had to think of some other options. There were definitely some blessings that went along with it; being able to perform onstage and hearing your hard work on the radio, traveling and meeting new people all the time and seeing different cultures and different places. That was my favorite part of it.

been for you? Especially after not necessarily being as big in the public eye?

What were your biggest challenges that you faced in the industry during that time? One of the challenges would be, once I had children, being a mother and being an entertainer. That’s difficult if you don’t have a lot of bank already. Right. And what would you say has been the hardest thing about being back in the public eye and saying “Ok. Yea I’m gonna be doing new music. I’m trying to figure out what

www.everythinggirlslove.com

direction I’m gonna go in” and now people are expecting it so the pressure is on right now. How is that for you?

I’m enjoying it. I’ve actually been solo for years now. I left City High in 2003 when I had my first son. I love it! I don’t have to wait for anybody. You’re responsible for you. You’re not responsible for anybody else. If they’re late, if they’re not doing this, if they don’t show up in the studio, you don’t have to worry about that. It’s all you. You got’s to be on time and I don’t have no problem with being on time and doing what I gotta do; my job! Nobody else’s mistakes fall on me. I get to be in control of whatever my mistakes are. They’re my mistakes. I love doing my own photo shoots and being able to have creative control over what I want to say and how I want to sound and what I want to look like.

When your success really started taking off, what was the rush like? Well, I can say it happened fast but at the same time it didn’t because there was a lot of hard work, time, effort, blood, sweat and tears put behind all of that. It wasn’t just one night, one day and then the next day it happened. There was a lot of hard work behind it. Now, the part that did feel like it happened fast was one day during a show nobody knows the song, and then the next day, everybody knows the song and there’s a bigger crowd and there’s a little more support. When you’re trying to get on, nobody wants to give you love but once you get on, it’s a lot easier. You can get into fashion week with no problem and such and such wants you to wear this on the red carpet and you don’t have to work so hard to get on the red carpet. Why did City High break up? Photos courtesy of sheisnyc.com

“I don’t worry about people’s opinions anymore… I care about my God and I care about my children.”

www.everythinggirlslove.com

There’s a major misconception that there was a love triangle going on, which is not the case, at all. There’s also another misconception that I led the other guy to some alcohol abuse; that is also not true. I did date Robbie in the past before the group got together. I wasn’t going to dismiss the opportunity because my ex-boyfriend was in the group. This was an opportunity that was once in a lifetime. I did think about it like “Oh, this could be a bad idea,” but it was a wonderful opportunity. He already had his alcohol abuse. That was why I stopped talking to him to be-

gin with. He already had issues. He was abusive. I never wanted to talk about it because I wasn’t trying to put nobody out there. As we started to work, he wouldn’t show up to certain shows and it became an issue. He started treating people wrong. He was saying, “Oh. You wouldn’t be shit without me.” So, naturally, my reasons for not wanting to be in the group anymore were business reasons. He did not show up to certain stuff or we would be in an interview and he would pass out drunk. This was not good for business. Yes, I did marry the other group member but there was never a love triangle and that was not the reason the group broke up. I decided to leave the group because I didn’t feel as though he was professional. When you married the other group member, did it bring issues from Robbie? I think he was jealous, but I wasn’t worried about how he felt at that point. Just to be honest, he was an asshole. This was my husband. I had children with him and we were together for 11 years so I chose to follow my heart and I was not going to make decisions based off of somebody who didn’t treat me right. We knew that it was going to be a taboo thing, but we chose to follow our hearts and I don’t regret it. What was it like for you dealing with those misconceptions and those rumors about your relationship at such a young age and during a vulnerable time?

Feature Initially, I just was trying to ignore it because I was already use to Robbie telling lies and things like that, so I was not surprised. But when it started to get out of hand, I felt angry because I felt judged. I felt scrutinized. I felt like “Ok. These people don’t know me and they don’t know what I’ve been through and they’re just saying these terrible things and making up these things in their heads based off of what?” This is my personal life. I was angry at first and it was also hurtful, but those kinds of things never go away when you’re in this industry so you just got to swallow it and keep it moving. Being able to experience those highs; finding love and having success and starting a family, what was it like for you when things kind of took a turn with separating from your husband and not being able to really do the music thing like you wanted? I was at the lowest point of my life. My family broke

www.everythinggirlslove.com

up and I was now a single mother. I lost my house and all kinds of stuff. It was definitely hard but I did have a lot of support from my very close friends and family and I’m thankful for that. I still remained thankful no matter how bad things got. I recognized that I was still blessed and I was happy that my kids were healthy and were eating every day. That was what kept me from completely spazzing. But, God is good and things are much better now. I am not sad, I am happy! Tell me a little bit more about what you were doing before the show. I know you opened up a couple businesses. Did those things turn you back to music? I was actually still doing music while I had those things going on. I was still investing time. I don’t know how I had enough time in the day to be a mom and have these businesses and be recording, and going back and forth to New York and stuff like that. I still was doing those things but it was

not making ends meet. I tried going back to school as well, but to take care of children and work and try to pay for school and get financial aid and everything else … to the women out there that do it, kudos to you because I could not figure that out! I even went to a recruiter for Air Force Reserves. Right before I went for my final test, before the oath, I got the call for “R&B Divas: LA” and I had to make a decision at that point.

“When you’re trying to get on, nobody wants to give you love, but once you get on, it’s a lot easier.”

On the show, you talked about being raped. How do you deal with that situation now? It’s a little bit uncomfortable. It’s almost similar to someone finding a naked picture of you. The curtains are drawn back and this is all me. But when I look at my Instagram or my Twitter, or when I have certain interviews and people say “Listen. Thank you. That helped me,” it makes it worth it. When it first happened I completely, immediately put it in the back of Photo courtesy of blackamericaweb.com

Feature my head and just moved on, and I never went back to it. I just left it alone. Did going through the homelessness and the breakups and the relationships help you in writing your music? I don’t worry about people’s opinions anymore. I more so care about people who I deal with on a day-to-day. I care about my God and I care about my children. I don’t necessarily worry too much about the public anymore because if you love me you love me and you’re going to support me.

www.everythinggirlslove.com

I’m feeling good. It’s hectic at times. I love being able to expand on the opportunities that have come from doing the show and it’s been a blessing. I’ve just been thankful and I’ve been on my knees thanking God almost every night. Who would you say inspires you the most?

No. No I didn’t.

My children and when I see my mother and the things that she’s been through in her life. She still just continues to be strong and successful. What maintains me is my faith in my God.

So they were feeling some type of way about it?

What can we expect from your new music?

Girl! Listen, I’m still dealing with that right now. It’s a rough one but my family is so loving and kind. It’s just that initial shock factor.

Well, just expect some soul and some realness. I’m going to be real. A lot of the songs that I did are very relatable and you’re going love the melodies.

Did you get a chance to talk to your family about the rape before you revealed it on the show?

So at this point right now, how are feeling about your blossoming career and being a mom; being back in that balance mode again?

People think that I have been missing. There are plenty of songs on YouTube that you can listen to that I’ve done over the years, just to maintain you until the new stuff comes out. What would you say has been one huge thing that you’ve learned about the industry that you would make sure you told anyone who was aspiring to be an entertainer? It’s not what you think at all. There is a lot of hard work. Make sure you have a good team behind you that genuinely believes in you. It doesn’t matter how talented you are sometimes. It doesn’t matter how amazing or beautiful or how great of a heart you have or what you do. A lot of times, if you don’t have a good team behind you there isn’t any real to have the masses hear how amazingly talented you are or get to know how great of a person you are or how beautiful you are. Choose your team wisely. m

fall holiday a magical way of making us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The weather turns from blazing hot to wintery crisp, creating the romantic and clichéd straightaway to ‘baby making’ season.

The process is fun and exciting, but the reality for more than one-quarter of Americans is that they’ll become single parents. In fact, single parent homes have more than tripled since 1960, with the majority being young Black and/or Hispanic women.* Nine or ten months post baby making season often leads many of us to a bouncing bundle of responsibility and decision-making, with a strong possibility that he or she will be deemed a “wedlock baby.”

Television

shows like VH1’s “Family Hustle” and Rapper Ice Cube’s production “Are We There Yet” show us that co-parenting can exist in an effective, mature manner.

S ure,

you may be a part of the aforementioned one-quarter, but that doesn’t mean that you and your child’s father can’t coparent successfully. If you’re on a realistic quest to creating and maintaining a healthy relationship with your child’s father, test out EGL’s top things to do to get there: • Get a clear understanding of his role. “Being a father” may hold different definitions between you and him. Allow him to explain what it means to him to be a father and how he’ll best express those values around your child. • Keep the lines of communication open. If this is your biggest problem, try to agree on comfortable methods of communication between you both like email, text messaging, phone calls, or Facebook. Discuss only relative and important matters and grow from there if you’d like.

• Refrain from comparing your situation with anyone else’s. You’re a unique family with unique needs. Determine the best way to make your nontraditional family work for everyone’s sake. • Enjoy family nights together. Hopefully, this will be a recurring event that’ll take place on the well-planned schedule of sorts! Your child will feel the most special to be around two parents who love him abundantly. Children who are loved are more confident and often perform better in school. Let your child choose how they want to spend time with both parents.

• Don’t negatively talk about your child’s father in front of them. Doing this can cause a series of confusion, miscommunication, ill feelings and hatred. Family First...

Blending the Old with the New By: Essence Cohen

The holiday season typically brings about feelings of joy and delight with maybe the occasional concern about what to wear and what to bring. However, there comes a point in your life where you will be in a committed relationship and you and your significant other will be concerned about how to spread your time between both of your family’s. The holidays are a sacred time, and up until your new relationship, you’ve spent them with a very specific group of people; YOUR OWN family. There are bound to be traditions that you and your significant other look forward to and

www.everythinggirlslove.com

will not want to miss. As such, you will have to decide how you two will make appearances at each house and indulge in the annual ritual of spending time with family. How are you to choose? ...Why must you choose? ...You don’t! Family time ,while dating, does not have to mean picking one side over the other. It doesn’t have to mean satisfying one person’s family while disappointing the other. Your family will sometimes make you believe that your only option is to choose; however, you have a couple of options:

Bring everyone together. You don’t have to choose between one or the other. If you and your significant other are an established couple, either married or together for a long time, then you can combine your families into one home. You and your significant other can invite them to your place if it is in close proximity. Or, maybe your family would not mind inviting the other family over for the holiday. This will give way to the possibility of incorporated both families’ traditions. You might end up starting new ones in the process. And the most obvious option,

2

Split the time. Split each major holiday into two halves-meaning if it is possible you and your significant other will have two Thanksgivings and two Christmases. This will allow you to both spend time with each of your families while also appeasing one other’s wishes. If ever there was a time or circumstance for compromise, it is this one. The next few months are sensitive and special for most people. Don’t give your lover an indirect ultimatum by requiring them to pick between family time with you and yours or theirs. Family should and will always come first. Besides, if you’re serious about this relationship, his family needs to be priority as well. m

How to Use Goodwill to Effectively Promote Your Business By: Maisha Harris and Michelby Whitehead

photo courteousy of madamenoire.com Tis the season to be thankful. And what better way for local business owners to show their appreciation than by investing back into the communities they serve! So, how can that be done? By showing a little “Goodwill” of course!

How can you, the small business owner, incorporate these billion buck strategies into your own operation? The answer is simple. Here are ways you and your organization can increase your exposure while giving back to your community at the same time.

Hosting a Clothing Drive: Host a clothing drive in partnership with Goodwill. It’s simple and easy to do. Step One: Establish a date for the clothing drive and the length of time to host it. You can schedule it anywhere between one day to a full month. Step Two: Contact your local Goodwill to have bins dropped off to the designated location for collection.

Goodwill Industries was founded in 1902, by Reverend Edger J. Helms; who believed in social innovation. Reverend Helms used clothes and other items that he collected from the wealthier side of town as a tool to enhance the skill sets of people in the neighboring communities. First, Reverend Helms trained the “poorer” population by teaching them how to repair and mend used and worn clothing. He then sold the newly repaired items for profit or donated them back to the very people who polished them up and made them like new. His philosophy was, “a hand up not a hand out.” Rev. Helms’s was a “Hustlaprenuer” in his own right and his forward thinking has turned into a $4 billion dollar non-profit organization.

Step Three: Promote! Promote! Promote! Get the word out about what you’re doing and what it’s for. Step Four: Assign someone to be in charge of locking up the bins or pulling clothes each night until the clothing drive has been completed. Step Five: At the end of the clothing drive, donate all of the collected items directly to Goodwill. They pick up the bins and the donations from your designated drop off location. In exchange for the donations, Goodwill acknowledges you and/or your business in their quarterly newsletter. You will be recognized as one of their community service partners.

What is there not to love about Goodwill! It is one of the places a girl can get a fly outfit for $20 or less. Below is a casual look, a business look, and evening look we put together with pieces from Goodwill.

Goodwill has several initiatives geared toward helping people who are often disenfranchised: • Immigrants- Provides language and cultural awareness classes • Youth- Gives them the tools needed for a successful education • Senior Citizens- Helps them live independently, get a job, and advance career by providing access to support services, specialized training and assistive technology • People with criminal backgrounds- Assists with the transition back into society and finds them employment • Military & Veteran Families: helps to find employment, health services and skills for entering or reentering the workplace.

If your business is need of full-time, or even seasonal help, you can contact your local Goodwill to discuss their employee referral program. Not only would your business be staffed to run effectively, but you would also be giving an opportunity to people who are often last in line. Doing this enables you to improve more lives.

So often when we decide to become entrepreneurs, the decision is made solely based on the money we expect to gain and the freedom of being our own boss. That’s cool, but what about the priceless fulfillment of making a difference. Moreover, you would be surprised at how much ROI your business would gain just by enhancing its philanthropy. Rev. Helm’s mission started out as something small in 1902, but grew into something monumental, currently servicing over 6.7 million worldwide. He has showed us that it is important to make a living, but we should never neglect to make a life worth living. We at EGL Hustlapreneur, love a cheerful donator. Of course, once we started diving in deep, there were plenty of goodies to choose from. We took a few pictures to give you a general idea of some of the things you may be thinking of donating for the cause. All items donated must be gently used, not damaged, of course. Family Portrait EGL’S GUIDE TO A FAB HOLIDAY

every girl loves m Holiday Candids

Ladies, Thanksgiving is right around the corner which means it’s the beginning of the holiday season! We all need to prepare ourselves for needy family members, long grocery store lines, Thanksgiving Macy’s Parade and Thanksgiving football (no, your husband will not be helping you cook Thanksgiving dinner!). But there is one more thing we need prepare ourselves for, or should we say person; our scrapbooking mother who loves to snap random candid’s throughout the holidays. We love mom, but we hate that she always catches our bad side sweating over the stove cooking Thanksgiving dinner. We all know that with the holiday season there comes unwanted candid’s, family portraits and never ending Facebook picture posts from all the festivities. Well, the EGL Fashion Team has created a guide to help you be prepared for all the holiday snapshots and avoid those unwanted pictures. From the college girl stuck at school for Thanksgiving to the mommy of four cooking dinner for her entire family, EGL has the holiday outfit for you!

Don’t want to stay in? Get together with some of the girls on your hall and go out to a dinner or restaurant and try some of the local cuisine instead. Go for the trendy look with an oversized black t-shirt dress, a tailored white blazer, blue suede heels, and finish the look off with a hippy black bowler hat. If it’s too chilly outside, add a pair of tights under your t-shirt dress and beat the weather! Take a lot of silly pictures with your roommate to make a memorable collage of your first Thanksgiving away from home.

For the college fashionista who won’t be able to make it home for the Thanksgiving holiday, just because you aren’t going home doesn’t mean you can’t look super cute. You might end up on the school’s website, so let’s get you prepared. Look laid back and chic while enjoying sliced turkey and mac and cheese from your school’s cafeteria. Try a pair of floral printed skinny jeans, a graphic tee, an oversized cardigan, and a comfy pair of moccasins.

www.everythinggirlslove.com

Fashion Is this the first Thanksgiving dinner you are putting together on your own, with no help from mom and you want to make a great first impression? Your food can’t be the only good looking things at the table! Go for a sophisticated, but trendy look with a printed pencil skirt under a white racer back peplum top, paired with grey patent leather pumps with a gold heel. Want something else to catch the eyes of your guests other than your holiday decor? Add emerald green stud earrings for a pop of color while modeling in front of your Thanksgiving table to post on Facebook! Show your mom how you do Thanksgiving.

For our fashionista’s looking forward to a day off from work and their corporate office jobs to enjoying a nice Thanksgiving dinner with girlfriends: Try a nude lace skater dress, a deep nude structured blazer, and pink nude pumps; finish the look off with a chunky pearl necklace and a black and gold over the shoulder purse. This soft nude look will be perfect in group shots with your girlfriends to post on Instagram!

Not big into having Thanksgiving dinner and would rather do happy hour drinks instead? Go for an off white jersey-blend dress paired with teal mesh stiletto boots and a tribal spike necklace. Bring along a cute print coat to compliment your dress, warm you from the cold, and shield you from your girlfriend’s trigger happy picture taking finger! As you walk across the street, look back and make the candid glamour shot!

www.everythinggirlslove.com

The Thanksgiving holiday is the perfect time to bring your new boyfriend home to meet the parents. No, we don’t know if it will be like Meet the Fockers, but we do know if mom likes him she’s going to want to take a million pictures. Make sure you are camera ready: Try a floral print fitted peplum skirt under a navy blue long sleeved sweater, paired with grey and silver heels. With that outfit, mom won’t be able to resist getting these pictures printed and placing them all over the house.

Fashion

Your mom learned how to use the camera on her phone just in time for Thanksgiving and has been going around the house all day taking pictures of all the family members. But you’re a fashionable mom, no need to get caught in sweats and your husband’s old t-shirt while cooking dinner, prepare your feast in style! Try a light sweater dress with thin tights underneath (no need to burn up while cooking), paired with comfortable but stylish winter boots and a solid colored scarf. Now if mom walks into the kitchen and takes your picture without warning, her lenses will catch you cooking in style!

www.everythinggirlslove.com

Dinner is cooked but mom has yet to put the camera away! She wants to get a picture with her daughters who all haven’t been seen together in years. Knowing she will send this out as her Christmas card, do a quick change into a purple tailored peplum shirt on top of a canary yellow lace pencil skirt, paired with nude suede ankle strap heels. Now that will be a stylish Christmas card, you’re welcome mom.

I won’t say no names but you do get that. It’s rare when you get on the cast and everybody is cool. I’ve had my share of ego and people wanting everything to be about them. It’s a team effort. But that stuff comes with the business you’re in, so it doesn’t really

bother me. What type of woman do you go for? A lot of people talk about how it’s more difficult being a black actor in the industry, especially as far as mainstream television and film are concerned. What’s been your experience in being a black actor? My experience has been OK. Now, with that being said, there are still challenges… there aren’t a whole lot of roles for us. We kind of have to fight amongst ourselves for roles. If you’re a white actor, there are plenty of opportunities. We kind of get pigeon-holed and we get recycled a lot in the business, so you tend to see the same people in the same type of movies. For some reason, we don’t want to bring on fresh faces. I love actors like Denzel Washington, Will Smith, and Morgan Freeman, but how long have they been the leading guys? Who’s the next young, up and coming black actor that’s going to be that superstar? It should have been somebody by now. So, what’s next for you?

www.everythinggirlslove.com

Umm, fine! No, I’m just playing. I won’t say anything as far as looks because it really doesn’t matter. If I’m attracted to you, then I’m just attracted to you. But I’ll say a person who enjoys herself. She doesn’t need a man to validate her but if she does have a man, hopefully that man makes her better. Somebody who’s secure with themselves, and somebody who’s ambitious. In this business, it’s kind of hard to have somebody who just goes to work and comes home, because then all they will have to look forward to is trying to spend time with you, and you may not have that allotted time. So for me, it’s important to have somebody who’s also about her business. What do you think it takes to make any relationship work? First and foremost, communication. That’s the key in a successful relationship. Making sure you can communicate and hopefully be with someone you can be honest with

Feature and not have to worry about sugarcoating things. You have to support one another. We got each other’s back. I think that makes for a great relationship. The other stuff is important too, of course. You want to be compatible physically and sexually because that does play a key part too. What is a deal breaker for you in a relationship? Control. If I’m in a relationship, or if I was in a marriage, you can’t try to control what goes on, and neither will I. You would have to love me and support me for who I am. Support is very big for me. I’ll try to conquer the world for you if I know you’re going to support me in whatever I do. What’s your worst dating pet peeve? Negativity. I can’t take a negative person. I don’t surround myself with negative people, so if you’re the person who’s constantly complaining about something, or everything out your mouth gives a negative vibe, then we’re not going to work. Can you tell us one thing that guys really talk about when there’s not a woman around? The given is we talk about the sexual side. That’s just guys being guys. The guys that are in relationships talk about the stuff that you do that can be annoying. A female can ask a guy what you think about what I got on. Or, do you like what I got on? So, we say “Yeah, it’s cool.” Then you’ll come back with “Yeah, but I mean what do you like about it?” and it’s like the guy is so simple the first question was did we like it? If we like it, we don’t have to say what we like about it. We like the entire outfit. We talk about when we watch the game and we don’t want to be bothered. When a game is on, don’t talk to me for two and half hours. I’m just being real and that’s not a hard request. I’m just asking for two and half hours of me time. Be on the lookout for Todd Anthony, because he’s coming out swinging! m

Fantasia Barrino and Patti LaBelle: Before Fantasia Barrino burst onto the scene with her soul-wrenching, foot-stomping performances, Patti Labelle was known for taking everyone to church. As new generations of artists emerge, fans can’t help but to notice that they are inspired by some of the world’s most-renowned icons. The way Fantasia kicks off her shoes and sings every note like it’s an outcry from the heart, proves that she is an original diva-in-training. Just like Patti, Fantasia grew up singing in her church choir. The women have been adamant about staying true to their gospel roots, noting that faith has been an influential component of their survival. In 2010, Fantasia attempted to commit

suicide due to the stress of her music career and personal life. As Tasia made her return to music, she revealed that Patti helped her cope during the difficult time and inspired her to pour her heart and soul into music. Barrino’s comeback album, Lose to Win, soared to the top of the charts, proving that she deserves icon status. From the way she rolls her shoulders back like she’s catching the Holy Ghost to the way she balls her lips up when music overtakes her being, we see why the Godmother of Soul calls her “Baby Patti.” Icons produce nothing short of icons.

When you think about an artist that can move their body in the most complex form while belting out provocative lyrics, Ciara comes to mind. Flashback to 1986, there’s no doubt that Janet Jackson would be on the tip of everyone’s tongue. From their sex appeal to their dance moves, Ciara and Janet have been compared constantly. CiCi hasn’t been shy about crediting Ms. Jackson as her biggest influence. The songstress recently paid tribute to the pop icon by recreating the visuals to Janet’s “All for You” album cover for her single “Body Party.” Ciara also channel Michael and Janet Jackson in her “I’m Out” video featuring Nicki Minaj. It’s safe to say that Ciara’s dream is to collaborate with the icon. However, those chances may be slim considering that Janet has reportedly retired from music after marrying her billionaire husband, Wissam Al Mana. Taking a page from Janet’s book, Ciara is also ready to take the next step in her relationship with Fiancé Future... With successful careers and flourishing personal lives, Ciara and Janet set the bar high and are remotely unstoppable! What else would you expect from icons?

Brandy Norwood and Diana Ross are the true definitions of Queens. Their personalities are humbling and their stage presence reigns supreme. In 1999, Brandy got the opportunity to star alongside Miss Ross in the film “Double Platinum,” which received rave reviews from critics including Oprah Winfrey. Stemming from the film, Brandy and Diana released the hit single “Love Is All That Matters” which is still recognized as one of the most soothing collaborations today. Brandy has always had the utmost respect for Motown’s finest. Earlier this year, she revealed that she would like to remake Diana Ross’ Lady Sings the Blues, but later decided against it out of respect for Ross’ amazing and memorable performance. Just like Diana, Brandy started her singing career at the tender age of 15. Making strides in the music industry with songs like “Have You Ever?” and “I Wanna Be Down,” Brandy is already recognized as an icon. Brandy’s voice and humbleness will keep her around for years to come; just like Diana Ross.

Ariana Grande and Mariah Carey “Did Mariah Carey release a new single? Mimi is the only artist with a vocal range like that!” Sorry, but the voice that is currently taking over the country belongs to Ariana Grande. The 20-year-old former Nickelodeon star has been praised for her vocal range, which instantly drew comparisons to Mariah Carey. Though some artists have issues with being compared, Ariana considers the similarities a “blessing.” Just like Mimi, Ariana’s sound is a blend of throwback R&B. In September, Ariana’s debut album, Yours Truly, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The up-and-coming superstar is currently taking a note from Mariah’s book, and will release her first Christmas album later this year. From her talented voice to her bubbly personality, Ariana had definitely tugged at the heart strings of fans from all over the world. Though she’s a little young to be considered an icon, her body of work speaks volumes of her musical abilities. Though people refer to her as the next Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande is working hard to prove that she’s a star in her own right. m

Reasons for Ungratefulness The spirit of ungratefulness roots from many sources, including:

Illustrtaion WIlliam Townsel

• Given everything This was mentioned earlier. More and more children are given everything for nothing. They are showered with gifts, which sometimes aren’t warranted.

Raising Financially Grateful Children

Effects you don’t want • Ungrateful children tend to grow into ungrateful adults. Frivolous spending, arrogance, disciplinary issues, and ingratitude will begin to manifest. If you plan to leave them a fortune, they are more likely to squander it.

By: Idelie Chris Perez and Nia Nunn

No longer is a dollar from grandma and grandpa anticipated with the eager hands of children. We are now faced with a new generation who pout and cry when told “No” and who chuckle at the sight of a, “measly buck.” It’s a generation of youth who need the latest trends with zero consideration for financial circumstance. Welcome to the years where money is reduced to dyed paper that mommy and daddy give freely.

Why are children less grateful than those before them? A great deal of it has to do with the fact that much is given to them without anything required of them. This stems from parents who might have struggled at some point, so they want to “save” their children by giving to them freely. But what is that teaching them?

www.everythinggirlslove.com

• Unaware of how other children live According to Nancy Phillips of www. zelawelakids.com it’s common for children to have little knowledge of how others live because quite often they are only exposed to their own lifestyles and aren’t aware that poverty exists… sometimes a mile away.

“The goal is to release respectful, well mannered, and appreciative children into this world.” – Nia Nunn

• Children become self-centered with little to no regard for others. As they grow, this may come to include siblings, parents and other loved ones. • Children may have a difficult time becoming self-sufficient, also known as “failure to flight”. They may become highly dependent on others to take care of them.

Hustlapreneur So how do we teach the generation of tomorrow gratitude today? • Teach Them How to Carry Their Weight Teaching the value of a dollar seems to have lost its appeal like black and white television. Dolores Delgado, 74-year-old mother and grandmother, stated, “Kids don’t understand the value of money anymore. It’s normal for a parent to give $20 to a child for lunch.” When asked about her own upbringing she proudly responded, “Before, if you gained money you gave it to your parents for necessities. I raised my kids the same.” • Lead By Example ‘Generational financial’ values have dissipated and reinvented itself in the form of, “What’s hot right now.” Delgado added that the value of money has gone out the window and noticed that young adults will see, “… five cents on the floor and won’t bother picking it up. In my days kids would go crazy for a penny.” Needless to say values start in the home and mimic the actions of parents. • Give Them a Sense of Responsibility Patricia Onderko, author of 5 Ways To Raise A Grateful Child, noted that children learn “please” and “thank you” around 18 months and can be taught early on. Young children are impressionable; teaching your child to do household chores: making their bed or cleaning up after themselves, are valuable lessons that encourage gracious behavior.

“True appreciativeness and generosity take time to seed and blossom.” – Patricia Onderko (Parenting.com) photo courtesy lewisclub.com

www.everythinggirlslove.com

• Teach Them About Valuable Work Teach your child the value of a dollar; one way is to give an allowance warranted by good work and make sure you set the example. Another way is to talk to your children about the value of hard work and its results. A good way to start the conversation is around the dinner table; ask everyone to say what hard work has done for them, this will teach your child that you too had to strive for your valuables, not only for yourself but for the family as well. • Teach them how to nobly serve others Donate! Sift through old clothes and toys and encourage your child to give. Claire Lerner, Child Development Specialist, noted that children as young as 3-years-of age can be incited to do so. In return, your child will be exposed to the needs of others and will appreciate the privilege of having a lifestyle that some may not have.

“Raising a grateful child is an ongoing process.” – Claire Lerner (Child Development Specialist quoted for parents.com)

The results you want As values are passed on and taught to children, financial stable adults are created. Jamal Huff, father to a 3-year-old son is teaching the value of money at a young age, “My son saves his money, which shows me he gets the lessons I instill in him.” He attributed his son’s attitude by not spoiling him and only giving him things when he’s cleaned his room or completed his schoolwork.

“An attitude of gratitude helps us thrive.” – Homa Tavanger

(author of 10 Ways To Raise A Grateful Child www.PBS.org) We all strive to live in a gracious world and it begins at home. Let your children see and mimic your actions. Be quick to compliment your child’s good behavior making sure to not always reward good behavior with monetary praise. Explain the importance of accomplishments and tell them what you are grateful for and how hard you’ve worked to ensure financial stability. Most importantly, encourage, encourage, encourage! Value driven lessons can be passed down from generation onward. m

“When you do something noble and beautiful and nobody noticed, do not be sad. For the sun every morning is a beautiful spectacle and yet most of t he audience still sleeps.” – John Lennon

EGL was able to get insight into Zane’s creative imagination through an interview.

www.everythinggirlslove.com

How did you come up with the pseudonym “Zane” and what made you want to have an alias? When I “became” Zane, I had no idea that it would be a pen name or that I would ever publish a book. All of this was truly a divine intervention kind of thing in my life. I was in a chat room on AOL back in late 1997 and someone asked my name, I said, “Zane,” and so it began. By the time that I decided to put a book out, the pen name was already virtual so it made no sense to change it. However, if not Zane, I definitely would have chosen a pen name to write under. I am an EXTREMELY private person and I love being able to shut it all off whenever I choose.

“My life is not an easy one, but it is an amazing one indeed. Never a dull moment!” Being that sex plays a major role in several of your novels, why do you think people in real life are afraid of pursuing their own sexual desires and sexual fantasies—but, will indulge in an erotic book? They read it because it is safe but I honestly believe that most people are getting their freak on. They simply do not discuss it; which is the mature thing to do. I do not discuss my sex life AT ALL, so there is no telling what people are doing behind closed doors. Trust me when I say that the biggest freaks are not detectable simply by looking at them. And when someone is truly sexually liberated, they

Feature do not need the world to know or cosign on it. The people out bragging about sexual prowess are the ones with boring sex lives, in my opinion, or they lack confidence. The quickest way for a man to lose my attention is for him to start bragging about his bedroom skills. Yuck!

You have such a creative and vivid imagination that your words come to life in your books. Have you ever wanted to act any of the sex scenes for yourself that you developed for your characters in your book? (Laughs!) I will simply say that I am not a virgin and I always have a smile on my face. What projects are you currently working on that contribute to the overall Zane brand? Zane’s “The Jump Off” premiered on Cinemax on March 29th, 2013 and “Addicted” will hit movie theaters some time this year. I am also working on several book projects, TV

shows, screenplays and product lines. My life is not an easy one, but it is an amazing one indeed. Never a dull moment!

EGL recently started a book club and would like to feature one of your books. What is a good book of yours that you would recommend for the EGL Book Club? That depends on if you want to read a novel or short stories. I am proud of all of my books, but my latest novel was The Hot Box, so I would suggest that. What accomplishments are you most proud of? This answer is always the same and will always remain the same. My biggest accomplishment is my children. Everything else that I do pales in comparison. To me, the true judge of my character is what my children say about me to their friends and relatives when I am not around.

Do women approach you about advice in the bedroom on how they can please their man? If so, what is the most common concept that you relay to them? For the past 15 years, I have answered advice emails. I have more than 10,000 in my inbox right this second and I have been the advice columnist for numerous magazines. I also am the one that gives my friends a reality check when they need one, but it is more so helping them think through their problems logically when stress and adrenaline tends to cloud their perception.

complicated. (Laughs) What is something that people would be surprised to know about you? That a sexually uninhibited woman can also be extremely intelligent and business-minded. Outside of that, they would be surprised to know that I am very monogamous. The fantasies that I write are meant to spark imagination in the bedroom, but with all the diseases out here, we all need to be careful. How can your fans connect with you? They can email me at zane@eroticanoir. com, on Twitter, I am @planetzane and on Facebook, I am Author Zane. m

“The quickest way for a man to lose my attention is for him to start bragging about his bedroom skills. Yuck!”

If you had to pick one character out of any of your novels, who would be the most similar to you and why? All of them! (Laughs)! In a sense, there is much truth to that. If I had to narrow it down, I am definitely a combination of Tempest from The Heat Seekers, Bryce from Shame on it All, Milena from The Hot Box and Brooke from Total Eclipse of the Heart. It’s The Little Things…

By: Joyanne Lawrence

Volunteering:

every girl loves m Being Charitable

Find an organization whose mission is something you believe in and offer your services in whatever capacity is needed.

Assisting a Mom with her kids:

Not often do you see them asking for assistance but, they certainly need it. It could be with watching or entertaining the kids, helping them with homework or just being there so that she can have a break.

Helping the homeless: There isn’t much that needs to be said here. When you don’t have a home, you feel like you’re nothing. Giving a meal, a blanket or an encouraging word to someone who doesn’t have is major. Instead of turning a blind eye because they don’t look like you, take a second and give them some time.

Supporting the elderly: As people age, their skills and ability to aptly do certain things slow down. So even if you do simple tasks such as wash and style their hair, cook for them, or help them with errands, it will be most appreciated. By giving to them, you in return can also gain. They are great storytellers, full of wisdom and always willing to share.

A phone call: Isn’t it funny how when you’re feeling at your worse, you can get a phone call that will brighten your day? The sound of someone’s voice and the fact they thought of you warms the heart like none other. Don’t ever think that you’re bothering someone if you have the sudden urge to call. Your voice may be just what they needed to hear.

A small gesture:

Who do you automatically think of when it comes to lending a helping hand to strangers? The population of those in need has extended way beyond the elderly. From the CEO to the valet, we all need help whether physically, emotionally or spiritually. You may never be able to visually identify those in need, so don’t count on that. Often, it’s the small things that we do for others that have the most impact. The following are a few examples to get you started.

Have you ever said “Good Morning” or smiled at someone who wasn’t expecting it and watched their reaction? The unexpected causes smiles, and smiles are contagious. You can’t smile when you’re mad, it’s impossible. So smile at someone, it’s small but causes an enormous effect.

Lend an ear:

Everyone has a story and when it’s a juicy one, we can’t wait to share it. Instead of talking all the time, maybe we need to stop ... And listen. The culture of going to a therapist has increased steadily over the years. In a way that’s a good thing but isn’t it better sometimes to talk to someone who can relate to us? Why not be the person that is there for someone. I’m not suggesting you become their therapist, just be there for the friend that really needs it. Don’t offer advice, just listen. It could be the one thing that helps them through and eases their burden a bit.
