Which Way Will the Markets Go When You Retire?

magine it’s your first day of retirement and you leisurely get your first cup of coffee, flip on the news and Ugh! the markets are dropping! You end up 15% down in your first year of not working. Your $500,000 nest egg is now worth $425,000 and will need an almost 18% rebound to even get back where you started. Maybe you won’t book that cruise you’ve been thinking about, after all. But what if the opposite were true? Everything is glorious and the markets boom, up 15% for the year. Hooray! Your $500,000 is now worth $575,000. Caribbean cruise, here we come! Well, which is it going to be? Markets up or down? Can you predict that? I sure can’t. Market corrections EARLY in your retirement years, coupled with ongoing

withdrawals, can dramatically decrease the ability of your money to last your lifetime. It’s called Sequence of Returns investment risk, and few investment professionals talk about it or plan for it. Markets don’t give you the exact same rate of return every year; they give you up and down returns that work out to an average. If the down’s come early in retirement, that can spell trouble. Your money won’t last as long as an average return might predict. What’s a retiree to do? Structure your investments according to time and purpose. For assets needed earlier in retirement, invest conservatively. For assets needed later, invest with a growth focus. “Accumulation” advisors simply invest by account type: IRA’s one way and brokerage accounts another way. This simply does not mitigate Sequencing Risk, and it is a “must do” when you’re within 5 years of starting withdrawals, entering the “Distribution” phase of life. Secondly, have enough guaranteed income to meet your lifestyle needs. This gives you the flexibility to wait out a down market. If Social Security isn’t enough to do

he Women’s Ministries at Shepherd of the Lake are excited to announce our annual women’s retreat! This year’s topic considers the place of dreams, visions, and visitations in the Bible. it’s clear that God often relies on the unconscious to wake people up! In this discussionoriented presentation, we will take a deeper look at both Biblical and personal dreams, exploring their spiritual, emotional, and social impact for the dreamers and their communities. Our presenter this spring is Laura Huff, a certified Dream Mentor and Spiritual Director who has facilitated dream groups and taught dream work since 1999. She holds Masters’ degrees in English and Psychology and has

trained at Haden Institute, completing 2-year programs in both Dream Spiritually and Spiritual Direction. Laura has taught at many conferences, community workshops and local churches. Most recently, she leads groups via Zoom as well as mentoring individuals along their spiritual path. Laura is a Presbyterian, from Jonesborough, TN. t is hard not to notice the number of Californians that have recently moved into The Greater Tellico Village Community for their retirement, and we continue to see that movement impact our local work force. Miss Lisa Flores from San Louis Obispo, California has recently brought her skin care practice to Brian K. Whitehead The Village Salon. Lisa specializes Managing Partner in 3-D Microblading, which is a The Village Salon procedure where individual hairs are hand drawn onto the skin that are a thickness and color that will naturally match your existing brow. Lisa received her training from the world renowned Lindsey Ta, from Microblading LA and she is excited to bring her practice to The Greater Tellico Village Community. o you or your spouse often have a tough time hearing the TV? Do other family members often comment on how loud the TV volume is? The volume of the TV is something that affects everyone in the house. Robert could not clearly hear the dialogue in the programs we were watching so he was turning the volume so loud that it was starting to become a serious problem for me. But a special feature of his new hearing aids provided the perfect solution. The new hearing aids have an accessory device called “TV Connector” which uses Bluetooth technology to wirelessly transmit the TV sound directly into the hearing aids. This small device attaches discretely and easily behind the TV and enables the person with the hearing aids to operate their personal volume preference independently of the sound produced by the TV speakers. I can even totally mute the TV sound (think sports programs) and don’t even know that the TV is on because the sound is only in his ears. Have you noticed that some of the current TV programs have raised the volume of mu-

sic and other background noise to a level that often interferes with the dialogue? Well, the features of the hearing aids helps to both minimize these unwanted sounds and clarify the speech frequencies for a much enhanced dialogue clarity. And what about “low talkers”? (Think Conrad Hawkins in The Resident.) Again, the hearing aid features lift soft sound speech so his “mumbling” becomes more clear. And some PBS programs with various

accents (think All Creatures Great and Small or Vienna Blood) - again the hearing aid features clarify the speech frequencies so well that it becomes much easier to understand the dialogue. I know of some clients with minimally marginal hearing deficit that buy entry level hearing aids just to get these benefits of the TV Connector accessory. What is clear is that hearing loss is a communication disorder that affects all

our relationships. Working through communication problems is not an easy task. Partners that have been together for a long time still have relationship glitches. Good communication mixed with love, humor and patience helps everyone deal with these difficult and frustrating situations. Some spouses have reported that the blaring volume of their TV has forced them to watch TV in another room. Even with the door shut, it’s still too loud. ou see, I am a Maryville girl. I have called this friendly town home since I was 3 and I feel a very strong connection to it. After high school, I attended Maryville College where I earned a degree in Studio Art. I continued my education at UT Knoxville where I received a degree in Interior Design. I have been working as a professional interior designer ever since; a job I truly love. My design team and I can help clients with design projects ranging in complexity from something as simple as custom draperies for one room to space planning and furnishing entire homes! We have spent lots of time “cherry-picking” furniture, lamps, rugs, art, and accessory lines to develop a store that offers both a price point and a level of quality and uniqueness that I am proud of. I am also honored to represent many fine local

and regional artists. Good handmade craft is such a passion of mine! When opening the store September 2013, it was so exciting to have the opportunity to put into action some creative ideas that I have stored for so long and see them come to fruition. I was thrilled to bring this lifestyle store to Maryville and reconnect with people in my hometown. I hope everyone will come in, try a seat, share a story, and help me spread the word, “Come HOME to ROOST!” When people ask me, “What kind of store is ROOST?” my answer is always, “A really good one!” My vision for ROOST started with the name and its definition. ROOST: a verb meaning, “to become comfortably established in one’s residence or lifestyle”… The word just seemed to fit! ROOST represents a

clever mix. It is a home furnishings store with a casual flair brought to life by a distinct designer vibe. The name serves a dual purpose, not only does it describe the design sensibility of the product that the store offers but it also defines a strong desire to work in the town that has raised me. The tag line of the store is, “Come HOME to ROOST”… which is exactly what I did; I came back to invest and rest in my hometown.

by Lisa Grugin arm, cold, warm, cold; that is what the weather does this time of the year here in our little corner of the world. It might be 40 one day and 70 the next, and there is nothing we can do about it. It is very tempting to want to go outside and start planting on those nice days, but don’t get carried away. Our average last frost is not until early to mid-April. I have seen people plant too early way too many times, and it never works out well. There are, however, many things that you can do on pretty days: » Do your walk around. What has changed in your yard? Have you had trees come down so that a normally shady spot is now sunny? Do you have trees that have grown so that a formerly sunny area is shady? How have your plants fared during the winter? Do you need to add, subtract, multiply, or divide? What would you like to do this spring to improve your yard? Stop by if you need some help with your planning. » If you have an area where nothing seems to thrive, do a soil test. This will let you know if your problem spot has an imbalance that needs to be corrected. » This is a great time to do a good cleanup. Get fallen leaves and plant debris out of the beds and see how badly the weeds have taken over. Pull those weeds and treat the beds with Preen or another pre-emergent to keep them from coming back. While you are out there, work some good compost into the soil to add nutrients. » Cut perennials back to where new growth is emerging, but please consider leaving perennials that still have seed heads for the birds. They need the food to prepare for spring families. » Consider freshening or topdressing your mulch beds. It protects the plants from the spring freeze/thaw cycles and keeps moisture stable. Do NOT use too much, however! Three inches is optimal. NEVER pile the mulch around the base of plants or create volcanoes around trees. Your mulch should look like a flattened donut around trees and shrubs. If you already have a good base of mulch in place, give it a good raking to “fluff” it. Mulch can become very compacted and hard during the winter. » You can plant cool season annuals, perennials, and vegetables, but please do not plant warm season annuals and veggies yet. Everybody wants to get the first tomato of the year, but a tomato planted while the soil is cold will not bear well. Flowers will sit and pout because you were mean to them. Wait.

» Please stop pruning your plants without research. Crepe myrtles get murdered, hydrangeas and spring bloomers don’t bloom, and trees are horribly deformed by homeowners (and some bad “landscapers”) who have no idea what they are doing. Our first workshop of the season is on this subject, so call and sign up for the March 5th class (it begins at 10 am) if you need help. The Knox County Master Gardeners Program also has some wonderful pruning videos on YouTube. » Houseplants are ready for some TLC this time of year. Clean them up by washing the leaves off. Small plants can go in the sink for a good rinsing and larger ones can be cleaned with a damp cloth. I use a Swiffer on some of my biggest plants! Check for disease and insects, and up-pot if necessary. Don’t go too big! One pot size is enough. Use the best potting soil you can afford, because cheap soil is the equivalent of junk food for humans. I also resume fertilizing in March. » This is a good time to get your containers ready for the spring. You can dump the soil from small pots into your garden beds and work it in. Some pots may just need a quick rinse, and some may need a thorough scrubbing. If you had a fungal problem with the plants that were in the pot, rinse it with a mild bleach solution. If there are white lines on your pot, it is an indicator that you have been a bit overzealous with your fertilizing and salts are building up, so you need to scrub those off and ease up on the fertilization. If your containers are large, you don’t need to dump the entire thing out every year. If there are trees, shrubs, or perennials planted in them, you can top dress with compost. If you do seasonal planting, replace the top 6”-12” with fresh soil. If you have had problems with fungus or insects, however, you may want to start all over. Both can hide out in your soil and re-infect new plants. I’ll finish up this month with a reminder to take care of our feathered friends. Keep your feeders clean and full, keep birdbaths clean and full, and protect the birdhouses. We are getting shipments in on a daily basis right now, so stop in and see what’s new! IRS Notices 101

ew things in life send a person into a panic quicker than opening your mailbox to find the dreaded IRS letter. Seeing that terrifying logo has been sending taxpayers into A-Fib for years. You may be surprised to learn that not every piece of mail from the IRS is bad news. In fact, many IRS letters and notices can be handled painlessly. It is important to understand that the IRS will only correspond via mail. This means a lot of letters deal with what the IRS did with your account, what the IRS has received, or what the IRS has on file. If you do receive a letter, put the paddles down and do the following: » Do not procrastinate. The letter will give you a timeframe to respond. Make sure your response is timely. The IRS is very unforgiving with missed deadlines. » Follow the specific instructions listed in the notice on how to solve the problem. » If you receive a notice advising you that the IRS has corrected your tax return, you should review the notice and compare it to the original return filed. » If you agree with the changes, there is no need to do anything, unless a payment is due. Just sign the forms provided stating that you agree with the changes. » If you do not agree with the changes, follow the instructions listed in the letter and give the IRS an explanation on why you disagree. Make sure to include any supporting documents that plead your case.

» If the IRS has made a correction that calls for a payment due, you have disagreed, and have responded, the IRS will continue to send you auto-generated payment notices until the issue is resolved. It has been our experience that IRS responses can take up to twelve weeks. » It is important to understand that the IRS is not always correct on the notices they send to the taxpayer. Never blindly respond to an IRS notice with a check. Always research the issues and contact your tax professional to get their input on the matter. If you do not presently utilize the services of a CPA, this may be the time to do so. » If the IRS has assessed a tax bill that you cannot pay, you have options. You can request a payment plan from the IRS. The IRS is willing to work with taxpayers who are making a good faith effort. » Always keep a copy of your notice and any response sent into the IRS. In order to help you along in your IRS quest, here is a list of the most common IRS notices and how to handle them. For quick identification, the notice number will be listed in the upper right-hand corner of the notice: CP2000: Notice of proposed adjustment - This notice is generated when there is a difference between what the taxpayer reported on the tax return versus what was reported to the IRS by an employer, a bank or other payer. It’s important to note that a CP2000 can result in a refund. The letter informs the taxpayer of the adjustment being made on their return and will break down what was originally reported and the proposed

IRS adjustments. CP2501: Tax return discrepancy - The CP2501 requests clarification regarding information on the tax return that does not match information on file with the IRS. The taxpayer should contact the IRS immediately to explain the difference and correct the return. The deadline is usually 30 days from the date on the notice. Letter 525: Examination report - This letter informs the taxpayer that changes have been proposed due to an IRS examination. After a taxpayer has been selected for an audit, the IRS may propose additional tax based on the examination. The taxpayer has a 30-day period to dispute this proposed change. Letter 3219: Notice of deficiency - This letter is sent when it’s determined that a taxpayer has underpaid and owes taxes. The letter indicates the amount due. If the taxpayer agrees, they will sign Form 5564 (Notice of Deficiency Waiver) and send full payment to the IRS. If the taxpayer disagrees, they have 90 days to petition the determination to the Tax Court. Letter 3391: 30-day non-filer letter - This letter is sent if the IRS determines that tax returns are missing for certain years. Included in the letter will be a computation of the proposed amount due for tax years missing a federal return. Taxpayers have 30 days to appeal this notice or sign and return the agreement to the IRS. If you are still overwhelmed, we are here to help.
