NOW OPEN IN VONORE! Bootlegger’s Roadside Ice Cream –

S

Unlimited Flavorful Fun!

pring is here. Warm weather is ahead and, just in time, there is a new roadside ice cream shop in Vonore! Bootlegger’s Roadside Ice Cream Shop is now open for business! If you are ready for some awesome ice cream and hot dog options, this is the place to be. Bootlegger’s is a fun date or family destination worth checking out right away. In this month’s Mountain Views, we are excited to introduce you to Frank Vultaggio and Wendy Perestam, owners of Bootlegger’s Roadside Ice Cream. MV: Tell us a little bit about your backgrounds. Frank: We moved here to Tellico Village about 3 years ago, and we absolutely LOVE Tennessee and Tellico Lake. Besides the ice cream shop, Wendy also owns a business that sells marketing products for businesses. Oh, and now she’s even a Tennessee notary. Wendy: Frank owns a pool and spa company, 2nd generation, in upstate NY still, so he will be splitting his time. But you’ll find me at Bootlegger’s daily. MV: You both seem like incredibly hard workers! It can’t be all work; what do you do for fun? Frank: We both ride motorcycles so we are very biker friendly. I’m also a race

car driver and have a sports car collection. We encourage and look forward to holding classic car events. MV: Tell us a little about Bootlegger’s Roadside Ice Cream. Wendy: We have take-out ice cream served at walk-up windows, but also have a great outdoor atmosphere to enjoy your treats. We’re open 7 days a week. We’re hoping to attract bikers and sports club car parking. Continued on page 2A ...

MountainScapes – For The Yard of Your Dreams - Today

I

n this month’s Mountain Views, we would like to present an interview with Reed Perestam and Casy Sinclair, the owners of a local company, called MountainScapes. They are a pair of hardworking, young entrepreneurs that create and install great-looking landscapes and hardscapes in the areas of Tellico Village, Rarity Bay, and the communities that are served by East Tennessee’s Mountain Views. Reed and Casy have now been in business about a year in the area and that seemingly hard-to-find customer service is a big priority for them. We hope you enjoy our recent talk with Reed Perestam and Casy Sinclair, the

owners of MountainScapes. MV: Tell us a little about yourselves. Reed: I moved to Tennessee from Rochester, New York, after my sister moved here, leaving my job there as a welder. I came for one visit here and that was it. I made the decision to relocate. I played golf and basketball in high school and focused on lacrosse in college. Once I made the move to Tennessee, my partner, Casy, and I decided to start MountainScapes. Casy: In college, I was a swimmer. Soon

after Reed moved here, I also relocated, following my girlfriend, Reed’s sister, a UT pre-med student. Before I moved, I had a warehouse management position at a large pool and spa company. That’s where I got my training with landscaping, concrete, heavy equipment and more. MV: How did you come to start MountainScapes? Reed: We wanted to start our own business, since having some control of our own destiny was important to us. We originally began as a yard work firm focusing mostly

on mowing and yard work. After a while, we found out that many of our customers also needed landscaping and hardscape design and installation. Casy: Our backgrounds with landscaping, concrete, heavy equipment, and welding were a great fit for helping people with landscape and hardscape design and installation, so we moved very successfully into those areas. Lately, we have focused almost exclusively on landscaping Continued on page 2A ...

MV: Tell us about the ice cream you’ll be offering. What can we look forward to enjoying? Frank: We have both hard/hand scoop ice cream as well as soft serve. Both are produced by Hershey’s Ice Cream, and the flavors are all-natural. We have 36 flavors of hard ice cream and 26 standard flavors of soft serve. You’re certain to find a flavor you’ll love. MV: Why Hershey’s Ice Cream? Wendy: My kid’s grandmother lived in Hershey PA, so when we decided to open Bootlegger’s, we knew this was the brand to bring to our neighbors for a different taste. They have SO many natural and amazing flavors! MV: With so many choices, what are your favorites? Wendy: Oh, there’s so many! Frank’s favorite is Road Runner Raspberry. My favorite hard ice creams are anything Peanut Butter Twist and Cappuccino Crunch, and in soft serve, it’s got to be Blackberry twist, and, of course, a banana split - nothing better! MV: Ok, I’m guessing you also have some amazing shakes and sundaes. Frank: You bet! Our sundaes are bold and unique. Come try a Dolly, Dirt Road, a Front Porch or, if you’re real hungry, get The Boot! Wendy: Our shakes are amazing. In addition to our regular shake menu, we also have the shake of the month. April’s special shake is an Easter one along with our always

available birthday shake. MV: Ok, I’ve got to admit, I love soft-serve ice cream, and from what I’ve heard, you have a very special soft-serve machine. What makes it so special? Wendy: Well, our machine has the capability to mix in flavors on the spot at the touch of a button. Which means, we have a practically limitless number of soft serve flavors we can sell. We have an exclusive on this unique machine; we’re the only ones within 100 miles that have it! MV: Are you only serving ice cream? Frank: Oh, no! We have all beef New York style hot dogs with meat sauce and sauerkraut, homemade Italian Ices, plus Coke products. MV: Wendy, since you own a business that sells promotional items, what kinds of promo items will you have for Bootlegger’s? Wendy: Lots of fun stuff! We have ice cream scoops, t-shirts, koozies, mugs, and more to go along with your trip to Bootlegger’s. MV: What is your vision for Bootlegger’s Roadside Ice Cream? Frank: Our hope is to create Bootlegger’s as a destination and an experience for our customers. With our quaint outdoor patio, soon to come fire-pit, and of course scrumptious treats, we think we’ll become THE place to hang out. Wendy: We also have a giant inflatable ice cream cone that kids - and kids at heart - can take their picture in. When

and hardscaping. MV: What is your definition of “hardscaping”? Casy: Hardscaping can include paved areas, driveways, steps, retaining walls, water features, walkways, and any areas consisting of materials such as wood, stone, and concrete. Reed: Generally, softscape involves living plants and such. Hardscape covers the parts of your yard that aren’t living. MountainScapes does both. MV: Currently, contractors are so busy that customers have trouble getting ahold of them and, once they contact them, have challenges scheduling the job and communicating with the contractors. What is your customer service philosophy? Reed: We are committed to returning phone calls and keeping our promises. We can provide references so new clients can get feedback from prior customers. MV: Anything else you feel would be important to add? Casy: We go above and beyond for our customers, and we are fully insured. Also, our estimates are always free.

So, call or text us for a free estimate. You can call Reed at 865-936-7481 or Casy at 607-239-7335. Get started on the landscape of your dreams today! MountainScapes Reed Perestam 865-936-7481 Casy Sinclair 607-239-7335

people think of fun; they’ll think of Bootlegger’s. MV: Anything else you’d like to share with our readers? Wendy: We will also be doing weekly drawings for all who like us on face book and give us their email addresses for specials. Frank: And, we have a traveling ice cream cart for events small or large. MV: Are you having a grand opening? How do readers find out the date? Wendy: Yes, we are planning an awesome music event in April as a grand opening. Date is TBA. You can check our website, www.booticecream.com, call us at 423-884-2271, or like and follow us on FaceBook to keep up to date on all of our exciting new details. MV: What can our readers expect to see at Bootlegger’s in the future? Frank: A fire pit will be coming soon, and we’re working on chicken BBQ weekends. We plan to have a music event monthly, or possibly even weekly as we get going. MV: Wow! You’ve got such great plans for Bootlegger’s. You do so much! Just how do you do it? Wendy: That’s a good question. I try to live by my motto: “What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?” So, the next time you’re hankering for some cool, sweet, creamy, goodness, head on over to Bootlegger’s. From the Publisher

pring is a time of renewal when we witness new leaves starting to show on trees and bushes and colorful spring blooms putting on a beautiful show. Here in East Tennessee, dogwood blooms are celebrated all month long with color finally coming back to the landscape, brightening our surroundings, and lifting our spirits. And activity is picking up in the area as the days and evenings warm up. Recreation opportunities, special events, and travel options are slowly opening up again. I know I get energized and inspired in spring to make some changes to my interior and exterior décor, and although we have been making renovations all last year, I still like to brighten up my rooms with a touch of spring. Sometimes all it takes is to add a nice colorful spring floral or maybe just change out some pillows on the sofa. And my outdoor landscape is energized with color from azaleas, dogwoods, and ornamental flowering trees as well as spring blooms like tulips and daffodils. What goes hand-in hand-with warmer weather better than some delicious frozen treats? Be sure to visit the visit newly opened Bootlegger’s Roadside Ice Cream Shop in Vonore and check out their amazing selection of flavors – or create your own with their custom flavor soft serve machine. Enjoy with your whole family! April in Knoxville is full of activity, and we hope you can get out and enjoy some of those events. It’s time to shed the winter blues as well as the pandemic doldrums and enjoy the bright colors of spring in our area. From the Dogwood Arts Festival to Biltmore Blooms to the natural landscape all around us, God’s glory shines here in East Tennessee.

Rev Up Your Charitable Giving & Tax Savings with These Easy Tax Tips By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

H

elping others in need, whether with monetary donations, volunteer time, or charitable legacy planning, is a worthy endeavor. While you are making your charitable giving plans, consider these tips to maximize the tax benefit of your good deeds: » Rather than donating cash to your favorite charity, donate appreciated investments instead. Perhaps you bought stock many years ago that is now worth much more than you paid for it. If you give the stock to the non-profit, and they cash it in, they don’t have to pay the tax on the capital gain. » If you are taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMD’s) from your IRA’s, and in turn writing a check to your church or charity, wait a minute! You need to know about the Qualified Charitable Distribution rules where the IRS allows you to donate your RMD’s (up

to $100,000) directly to your non-profit, and not count that RMD as income on your tax return. Who knew the IRS could be so kind? This is a great way to restore a tax deduction for charitable giving that you aren’t otherwise receiving if you don’t itemize your deductions. (And if your financial advisor hasn’t told you about this little gem, you might need to reassess the value your advisor is bringing to the table.) »Perhaps you would like to leave some money to your church or charity in your will. Great idea! However, instead of gifting through your will, designate your non-profit as a beneficiary on your IRA. Why? Because IRA assets are taxable as ordinary income to your heirs, but not taxable to your favorite charity. Let your heirs inherit your after-tax investments instead. » Or maybe you like the idea of leaving some of your IRA money to your favorite charity but hate to think of short-changing your heirs. One solution is to use a portion of your RMD’s and buy permanent life

insurance. Then you can freely give that taxable IRA to your non-profit knowing that your family will receive a tax-free life insurance payout. Now everyone is happy! A course of Halotherapy is recommended to achieve lasting results for airway cleansing, congestion relief, skin refreshment, and inflammation reduction - not to mention stress relief!

Halotherapy comes from the Greek word Halos, meaning Salt. In this therapy, salt is fed through a halogenerator to heat, crush, and grind it into fine particles. Those particles are then dispersed using a dry spray aerosol to be inhaled by the nose and mouth - expelling pollutants and opening breathing passages - or absorbed topically to penetrate skin conditions. This therapy kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and expands airways to benefit those struggling with: • Breathing issues from allergies, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, sinus infections, cough, and sinusitis. • Skin conditions including dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and eczema. • And chronic ailments like ear infections, cystic fibrosis, rhinitis, and ENT issues.

believeRX & believeRXtra – Equipping You to “Live Your Best Life”

L

ocal pharmacist and entrepreneur, Ellen Phillips, along with her colleague, pharmacist Monty Roark, operate a unique, client-centered concept in pharmaceutical care: believeRX, located at 9627 Countryside Center Lane near the intersection of Middlebrook Pike and Bob Kirby Road in Knoxville. Ellen, Monty, and their compassionate, caring team of highly trained pharmaceutical associates have a mission to provide traditional pharmacy services combined with a holistic approach to health and well-being. believeRX recognizes that your local pharmacy can and should play an important role in your family’s total healthcare and wellness in partnership with your other healthcare providers. believeRX combines the personal and caring touch of the now almost non-existent neighborhood pharmacy with today’s rapidly evolving healthcare industry. Ellen and her team have created a holistic and interactive approach to your pharmaceutical experience designed to equip you to “Live Your Best Life.” believeRX is a full-service traditional pharmacy where you can get all of your medications and supplements, as well as receive a personal approach to your health. We believe there is more than one way to prevent or treat disease and we offer alternative therapies such as Halotherapy (dry salt therapy for breathing conditions, skin and mental well-being), infrared heat sauna sessions, peptides, and a large selection of high-quality supplements such as Terry Naturally products, and many more. believeRX is very different from the “national chain” pharmacy you are used to. Believing it’s time to focus on patients, not just their prescribed medications, staff members even receive additional training to become Certified Health Coaches. Ellen and her team strive to provide a custom-tailored experience for each customer/patient by treating them as a whole individual and not just their specific

ailments or prescription medications. Their name says it all, “We Believe in You” and your goal for better health, well-being, and longevity. In addition, to believeRX, Ellen and her team of health-conscious professionals have created believeRXtra in the same location, offering fresh, healthy great tasting fresh juices, smoothies, and bowls, made with real ingredients and without any added sugar. They are sweetened with only natural sweeteners such as local honey or agave - and they taste fantastic! Medical grade protein, Blender Bombs, YourSuper, CBD Oil, MCT oil, collagen, and many other options to help promote weight loss round out the offerings to help equip you to maintain good health, and break sugar addiction! Choose from a wide variety of smoothie flavors such as: Chocolate Thunder, Mango Margarita, Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie, Acai Blueberries, Guava Berry, or Matcha Green Tea, just to name a few. If a fresh juice is more to your craving, try Anti-inflammatory Juice, Immune Booster, Summertime Mojito, Creamsicle, Tropical Carrot or one of the many other symptom fighting or just plain healthy, but always delicious, recipes. Smoothie bowls are a great option for those interested in more “crunch.” From Dragon Fruit Bowls or Chocolate Teddy Graham Bowls to Guava Protein Bowls or Acai Banana Berry Bowls, (or one of the numerous other choices) believeRXtra is sure to have a menu item you’ll love. Remember the old-fashioned pharmacies of the 60’s? Like believeRX, they also featured personal, caring service and after-hours home delivery, when needed. Some even had ice cream and soda fountains. Also, like believeRX, they were very different from many assembly-line medical pharmacies of today. Those pharamicists knew their customers and treated them as individuals and friends. Going into a large, chain pharmacy, many feel treated like

only a number. Lately, some of them are so bureaucratic and disorganized that it would be a step-up for them to treat people like a number! It is refreshing and encouraging that believeRX still believes in personal, caring, and holistic customer service. believeRX even has a modern/healthy version of the old-fashioned soda fountain: believeRXtra Fresh Juices and Smoothies! pharmacy that you might have thought no longer existed in today’s big box, assembly-line pharmacy world, you are invited to visit believeRX or believeRXtra today! believeRX/believeRXtra 9627 Countryside Center Lane Knoxville, TN 37931 865.214.6672 www.believeRXtra.com Monday - Friday 9 am to 6 pm, Saturday 9 am to 2 pm

uilding any home is exciting yet can be stressful. This would be our second custom home to build and being from a different state makes it even more daunting.

When searching for a home builder, we needed to feel confident and excited to pursue this project. Not being from the area, I searched the internet and “phone interviewed” 4-5 builders before settling on Kit Keener. After seeing the other testimonials on his website and meeting Kit, we felt confident he and his team were www.keenerhomes.net | 865-458-1759 best suited for us. Just after they broke ground on our new 218 Lakeside Plaza, Loudon, TN 37774 home, we moved from Columbus Ohio to a condo rental in Maryville to be available to pick products and see the progress. Kit provided many choices and options with vendors to stay in budget, and worked well when on a few times I ventured outside his circle to choose an alternate product or vendor. We soon learned from other subcontractors and a few locals that Kit partners with some of the top subcontractors in the area. One day 3 separate individual contractors, (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) were onsite, and all met and worked well with each other coordinating a plan to most efficiently work with each other without being in each other’s way. On several occasions I was told by many other subs that “Mike”, Kits choice for the trim carpenter, is the “best in the area”. After watching him work and seeing his final results, quickly realized Mike is a very talented craftsman. It’s a example of how Kit and his team partner with some of the most talented artisans in their field. Kit, Derek and Krisha are always a cell phone call away and solve any issues that arise. Our experience was very positive and Kit Keener would be our first choice if ever to do it again.

Why Prison Ministry

10A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, April, 2022

“I had lived in shame as well as many other emotions for around fifteen years at that time, but during the forgiveness ceremony I was

freed in my heart from what had happened so many years before. The Lord made a profound change in my life that night and used Kairos Ministry as the conduit for His perfect peace to sweep over me like I had never known.” Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church

submitted by

A

s I have pondered what the reader should take away from this article, I would pray it would be revealed how much love and acceptance means to offenders whether inside prison or those who have been released. I served over two decades in prison. I came from a Christian family and had never been in trouble until I found myself behind bars when I was 36 years old. I am a former victim of domestic violence (which involves way more than physical abuse). I am a survivor, but I lost everything I ever loved and knew over those two decades. During those many years, I learned a lot

about people as well as myself. I learned that the only hope I had was my hope in the Lord, and I had no strength on my own, it came from the Lord as well. I witnessed so much of the devil’s handiwork in those various places of incarceration. But, on the other hand, I witnessed brave volunteers with a hunger to reach out to those forgotten and forsaken behind bars. It was those ministries who touched my life in a very powerful way. They brought agape love into us each time they came to minister. One ministry, Kairos, brought more than a service, they arranged with the Warden and Chaplain to come in for a four-day weekend (of course, it was from morning to evening—no sleep overs like Christian Camp in the free-world). I found myself face-to-face with myself

during a “forgiveness ceremony” held on a Saturday night of that weekend. I had lived in shame as well as many other emotions for around fifteen years at that time, but during the forgiveness ceremony I was freed in my heart from what had happened so many years before. The Lord made a profound change in my life that night and used Kairos Ministry as the conduit for His perfect peace to sweep over me like I had never known. This Ministry holds a very special place in my heart! I have recently been released from prison. I moved to a town where no one knew me and started life anew. I have played “catch-up” for the past five months. Immediately learning how to drive, pump gas, self-checkout, and so forth. It was two weeks after my release that some Kairos friends had a birthday/re-entry celebration for me at Friendship Hall, Shephard of Lake Lutheran Church in Tellico Village. I was so fresh out of prison that I hardly knew how to act around free-world people. I was nervous, but excited at the same time. Many of the members of the church came to this gathering and welcomed me back into society. They treated me like a “friend” and there was no judgment. I received agape love and genuine acceptance from this lovely group of Christians whom God placed in my life for such a time as that! I will never forget that day—I was free, I was happy, I was surrounded by people who looked beyond the woman who had been in prison and shared an afternoon with me in celebration. People who seemed to get me… I am not perfect, but I

have learned more in those two decades about life than I ever knew before. I have learned that there are good people behind bars—people who have made mistakes, people who need to be accepted as they are, and for where they are. Thank you, Shephard of Lake Lutheran Church for accepting me for me. Also, for the gift cards and agape love you all graced me with! You have made a difference in my life, and I am humbly grateful for your outpouring love! Since that day I have been back to attend several services with the wonderful flock who welcome me with open arms every time! I am adapting very well. I have learned a lot, but I have much more to learn. I have a car, job, and temporary housing, and I owe it all to God working through people. I will end with this—you never know how one act of love will make such a difference in another person’s life. I feel honored to write this article to shed some light on the true meaning of love and acceptance. May God bless each reader in a special way. – Donna P.

Heritage Family Dentistry

“I Feel Just Like Family”

“I

first learned about Heritage Family Dentistry when I was a patient of Dr. Bradshaw at the University of Tennessee,” said Heidi Hodges.

“I had stopped going to the dentist because of several past negative experiences. “I chipped a tooth when I was pregnant with my fourth

child. I knew Dr. Bradshaw from my church, so I called him and he quickly took care of my chipped tooth. I was so happy with how he cared for me that I decided to follow him to his practice. “I was very apprehensive at first, but Dr. Bradshaw and his team fully explained treatment and procedure to me in detail. They have been very understanding of my fears. I now visit Heritage Family Dentistry every six months, and they feel just like family. “All of the people that work at Heritage Family Dental are wonderful. I have had cleanings, a filling, a crown, and currently have Invisalign.” Invisalign is the latest and most advanced treatment for straightening teeth without metal braces. The clear aligners are almost undetectable by others, and some patients see visible results in as little as six months. “I would highly recommend Heritage Family Dentistry to everyone,” said Heidi. “My experiences have been great, and I am so thankful to have a dentist to go to where I am not fearful.” To learn more about Heritage Family Dentistry or to schedule a tour and no-obligation consultation, contact them at 865-816-9211 today.

“Dusting - Dust your shades regularly using an ordinary soft, clean cloth, dust cloth or mitt, feather-like duster, or cylindrical dust brush specially designed for your product type. DO NOT USE magnetic cleaners such as dust mitts on light dimming fabrics.” Vacuuming - For deeper cleaning, vacuum gently with a brush attachment. Compressed Air/Hair Dryer - Use a can of compressed air or a handheld hair dryer on the COOL setting to blow off dust/debris. “Spot Cleaning - Use a soft cloth or sponge moistened with lukewarm water and mild detergent (diluted to 5%). Rinse and blot gently to avoid creasing or damaging the fabric. DO NOT USE this method on delicate woven fabrics/fabric blinds.”

“Water immersion: Immerse shade in lukewarm water with a mild detergent; gently swish water with your fingers. Rinse with clear water. Close shade before removing, and hold vertically allowing the excess water to drain off. Re-install the damp shade into the window. Lower shade all the way down; allow to dry completely. DO NOT USE for delicate or blackout fabrics. DO NOT IMMERSE headrails (other than standard cordlock).” “Ultrasonic Cleaning - Professional ultrasonic cleaning is recommended for most, but not all, Honeycomb fabrics. DO NOT USE with any Blackout fabrics.” Injection/Extraction Cleaning - This type of cleaning injects a cleaning solution into the fabric and immediately extracts the dirty solution. The service is typically performed in the home.

Riding The Cutting Edge in Hearing Technology By Connie Ferraro – Tellico Hearing Solutions

W

hen was the last time you fully enjoyed a group conversation with friends and family? Or the last time you could hear the birds in your yard sing? Are you finding yourself turning up the volume on your tv? Perhaps your spouse has begun asking you to repeat what others say, or requesting you to speak more clearly. If you or your loved one are experiencing hearing loss, there is a temptation to leave it undiagnosed and untreated. For some, it’s difficult to admit when it’s happening, under the belief that it’s an admission that age is getting the better of them. Unfortunately, the negatives of this denial can far outweigh the positives. More and more studies are confirming that impaired memory, balance issues, and dementia may be linked to untreated hearing loss. That’s the bad news. The good news? These studies further suggest that hearing aid use may reduce the onset, or even reverse some of these disorders. That’s where we come in. Tellico Hearing Solutions was created to help you discover if a hearing device may help you to hear better. We use the latest technology that allows us to perform complete testing either in our office or in your home, which-

ever is more convenient and comfortable for you. We will provide you with a thorough testing of your current hearing and, if appropriate for you, we will fit you with the best hearing aid for your budget and hearing situation. We can also provide assistive listening devices for use with your tv, phone, or audio equipment. We have devices to make your everyday living easier. If your current older hearing aids are making everything too noisy, we’ll show you how modern hearing aids will improve the quality of your life. Interested in an upgrade? Tellico Hearing Solutions provides access to the latest cutting-edge technology from all the major manufacturers. Just one example - Unitron: » The hearing aids automatically adjust to up to 7 of your distinct listening environments. » They enhance the sounds you want to hear while minimizing background noise. » They are rechargeable - no messing with tiny batteries. » They are controllable by you via a user-friendly app on your phone. » Your hearing care professional can make certain adjustments remotely via your phone. » They are Bluetooth compatible so you can stream

audio, calls or digital assistants directly into them » They have a slim, comfortable fit - you’ll forget you’re wearing them! As you can see, the hearing aids we sell are not your grandma’s hearing aids of years ago! Thanks to this new technology, you no longer have to settle for only hearing certain frequencies or volumes. Bring on the Flowers! One of my favorite aspects about spring time is all of the beautiful colors that are suddenly everywhere! The bright yellow roses, the crisp white and pink dogwoods, the purple irises, the fields of green: all of these are true heralds that spring is here! Botanicals are a great touch all year long in your home, and during spring there's something even more refreshing about adding these accents to a space. When selecting florals and greenery, whether real or faux, I select foliage based on the colors in the room, pulling inspiration from the artwork, rug, window treatments, or any other colorful feature of the room.

April 8: Little Italy, 5:45 PM to 8:30 PM

April 15: Sherrill Hills, 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM

April 29: Villages of Farragut, 3:45 PM to 4:45 PM Little Italy,v5:45 PM to 8:30 PM

The room on the right is overall a soft and neutral space with bold art work and soft pinks. As a result the white and pink flowers are the perfect touch to bring it all together and bring out the more saturated colors in the art. One of my favorite greenery pieces to add to a room are preserved boxwoods. These are always green, require little maintenance, and are available in a wide variety of styles and sizes that can suit any space from traditional to modern. Another plant I frequently use to decorate are faux magnolia leaves. These are great as garlands, wreaths, or in center pieces and blend beautifully year round with any flower that is in season.

mbarrassed by the ugly black streaks or moss on your roof, but concerned the cleaning process would damage it? It’s a reasonable concern. After all, certain roof cleaning methods such as pressure washing can cause your roof significant damage. Asphalt shingles are especially fragile, and high-pressure water can – and will – cause problems. But what exactly are those troublesome stains on your roof, and what issues can stem from them? Caused by natural contaminants, the algae forming these stains aren’t just an eyesore to look at, but can also permanently damage roofing materials, shortening shingle life by as much as 30%, which can lead to you needing to replace your roof prematurely. Even repairing small portions of a damaged roof is more expensive than a roof cleaning, but if homeowners elect to pressure clean their roof, they can unwittingly cause even more damage to the roof than before. That’s where Clean Roof LLC comes in. We will professionally clean your roof using a soft wash process that will make it look great as well as potentially increase its lifespan, and are properly insured, trained, and licensed to clean and maintain your roof. What sets us apart from other roof cleaning companies? As former roof installers, we are trained and insured specifically for roof cleaning, which is different from pressure washing. We are so confident in our process; we also guarantee our results. We have researched the recommendations from each shingle manufacturer so we can

tailor our cleaning treatment accordingly. From shingle to tile, we have installed and maintained all sorts of of roofs, and, because of our experience, we have especially skilled knowledge for cleaning your shingles safely without voiding your manufacturer’s warranty. It’s very important to us to provide great customer service, especially in this market. If I don’t pick up the phone when you call, I will give you a call back within 24 hours. After you decide to use us, we strive to be in constant communication with you until the job is done. In addition to roof cleaning, we also can clean your siding and gutters, do roof repairs, and if you wish, we can set up an annual or bi-annual plan to make sure your roof & gutters are always clean. We can even safely remove your old satellite dish! It only takes one look up to realize a clean, well-maintained roof is key to preserving not just the function, but outward beauty and appeal of your house. So, if you are sick and tired of the unsightly streaks and discolorations on the top or even sides of your home, give me a call at 865-313-6779 or visit our website at www.cleanroofllc.com. There is no cost for an estimate. The only thing you have to lose are the ugly stains on your roof! Clean Roof LLC 576 Foothills Plaza #180 Maryville, TN 37801 865.313.6779 www.cleanroofllc.com

he recent guest speaker for the American Legion Post 256 was Richard Cook, author of the book “Ignored Heroes of World War II: The Manhattan Project Workers of Oak Ridge, Tennessee”. Mr. Cook gave a fascinating presentation about Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Oak Ridge, a city with nicknames including the Atomic City, the Secret City, the Ridge, and the City Behind the Fence. A city earning these names for being home to several massive Manhattan Project facilities employing thousands of workers during and after World War II. These facilities in Oak Ridge operated with one goal in mind—enriching uranium for use in the world’s first atomic bomb. Mr. Cook’s presentation provided numerous, almost hard to believe, trivia facts about the creation of Oak Ridge, its workings, and the life of over 22,500 workers. housands of tulips, an immersion into the world of Monet and Impressionist painters, rarely displayed artworks, and Frederick Law Olmsted’s 200th birthday will combine to create a memorable Biltmore Blooms, Biltmore’s annual springtime celebration. Beginning April 1, 2022, Biltmore will welcome warmer weather to its historic gardens and grounds where an ever-changing array of spring color emerges across the estate’s 8,000 acres. Biltmore Blooms runs through May 26, 2022. Biltmore Blooms Each spring, the yellow buds of forsythia and daffodil signal the beginning of the blooming season across the grounds designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Tulips emerge shortly thereafter, filling the Walled Garden with nearly 72,000 blooms in a kaleidoscope of colors. Later in the season, azaleas begin to flourish, followed by rhododendrons and mountain laurel while buds of every shade appear in the Rose Garden. New for 2022, starting on May 6 and running through July 8, Biltmore House will have extended evening hours for tours. Sunset on the grounds will be more spectacular than ever with live music in the Walled Garden and outside Biltmore House on the Library Terrace. Monet & Friends: Life, Light and Color Monet & Friends: Life, Light and Color – the second installment of Biltmore’s Legends of Art and Innovation exhibition series – is now open at Amherst at Deerpark®, Biltmore’s event center. Experience the sights and sounds of 19th century Europe through the eyes of Claude Monet and the Impressionist painters who immortalized them. Through July 10, paintings projected on an enormous scale will illuminate the bold brushstrokes of Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas and more. More information about this event is available here. Landscape painting “Strada Romana à Bordighera” and seascape “Belle-Île, le chenal de Port-Goulphar” were recently restored just for this occasion. Elaborate floral interpretations of the paintings will fill the home’s Winter Garden. Celebrating a visionary: Frederick Law Olmsted’s 200th Birthday Frederick Law Olmsted was born on April 26, 1822. Considered the father of landscape architecture in America, Olmsted designed the breathtaking gardens and grounds surrounding Biltmore House. Olmsted’s contributions also include revitalizing acres of overworked farmland and fields to complement the beauty of Biltmore House and laying the foundation for Biltmore to become the birthplace of scientific forestry in the United States. Olmsted’s Biltmore: A Collection of Scenic Stops On April 22, Biltmore will unveil a collection of scenic stops throughout its gardens and grounds for guests to learn more about the impact of Olmsted’s accomplishments at Biltmore and appreciate the mature and preserved landscapes that he envisioned more than a century ago. APRIL In

P

the Garden

by Lisa Grugin eople keep asking me if we’ve had the last freeze and frost. If I knew how to predict the weather, I’d be laying on a beach in the Caribbean right now, so I’ll just tell you the averages. Our average last freeze is March 24, and the average last frost is April 13. If you’ve lived here for very long, you know that we can be well on either side of that average. In other words, don’t rush Mother Nature. She likes to make people think it’s spring and then dump 6” of snow on them. Then she laughs. With that being said, April is generally the month when gardening kicks off with a bang. Everyone that has been waiting to start gardening emerges from their homes en masse and begins to plant. I’m going to join them, but I’m also going to keep all my plant covers handy! What can you do this month? There’s a big list! » After our snow-pocalypse, the first thing to do is take a good hard look at your plants to see what damage has been done. What has freeze damage? What has weight damage from the heaviness of the snow? Please wait before you start ripping plants out or doing severe pruning. Some things that look dead are not. Give them at least a month to see if new growth emerges. Broken branches should be removed with sharp tools, but if it looks dead

and is still flexible, it isn’t dead. Patience is a gardener’s best tool. » While you’re out there, look for other problems. What has insect damage? What has fungal spots from last year? What needs to be pruned, divided, moved, or composted? What has changed in the area that will have an impact on your gardening? There’s so much construction going on that some of you now have empty spots where there was once woods. Do your shade plants need to move? Do you have new neighbors that you would like to not see quite so much of? Make a list and make a plan. Big changes can seem overwhelming, so think about chopping your project into smaller pieces. It’s often a little easier on your budget, your sanity, and your family. » Let’s talk about bugs. Notice above that I said look for insect damage; I didn’t say look for insects. Many bugs are either benign or helpful, so don’t think that you must start drenching your plants in insecticide at the first sign of movement. If you see damage, however, it’s best to start treating before you have an infestation. Call if you have questions. » If you saw fungal damage during your checkup, make sure you get any

diseased leaves cleaned up and away. That will go a long way in preventing problems this year. Do not put them in your compost! Some plants are prone to fungal problems, however, so be prepared to start treating them as soon as the spots appear. If you’re putting new plants in, get your planting beds ready. Work in compost or aged manure to add nutrients. Get weeds out, but do not apply a pre-emergent if you’re going to plant seeds. If you’re going to plant seedlings instead, go ahead and apply a pre-emergent to make your life easier. Get your containers ready for spring. If they’re small, dump the soil out and rinse the pot. If the plants had any fungal problems, mix a tablespoon of bleach into a gallon of water and pour it into the pot, then rinse it out. Refill the container with fresh, good quality soil. Remember to NEVER use garden soil in containers. Potting soil is for pots, garden soil is for gardens. You cannot substitute one for the other! If your containers are large or have permanent occupants (shrubs, perennials, etc.), top dress them with a couple inches of compost or fresh soil. One-fourth inch of worm castings will also help. After 3-5 years, you really need to take everything out and start all over. Flower beds can be planted this month, but some plants are more tolerant of

cool temperatures than others. Petunias, geraniums, lantana, and some other annuals will handle a light frost. Begonias and impatiens will turn to mush. Ask us if you have questions. » You are safe planting any of the cool season vegetables, but wait until midmonth for tomatoes, peppers, and corn. Super sweet varieties of corn should wait until the soil is around 70 degrees, which is usually early May. » Prune spring blooming shrubs within a couple of weeks after they finish blooming. Please educate yourself! Permanent damage can be done by careless whacking. » Don’t cut bulbs back until after the foliage has yellowed so they can store up nutrients for next year. BulbTone or Bone meal will help. » I encourage all of you to plant at least some of your yard in pollinator friendly plants. I also ask that you use the least toxic chemicals possible. We are stewards of the earth, and we are failing. Stop by and see all the new stuff we have, or join us for a workshop. We have been helping customers have beautiful yards for 25 years now! Superior Rug Cleaning Restores and Protects the Beauty of the Oriental Rug You Love

April, 2022, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 9B

H

ow long did it take you to find that perfect Specialty rug for your home that just brought your whole home to life? How many hours did you spend looking at rug after rug, looking for just the right colors and the perfect design to complement your own unique style? One of the biggest investments you can make in any living space is selecting the perfect, genuine Oriental rug. These rugs are each unique expressions of pure art. Created from natural fibers and woven one at a time to match the vision of the artisan, your Specialty rug is truly irreplaceable, and an heirloom that can be passed down from generation to generation. With such a large investment of not only money, but also time, you obviously want to protect its longevity and attractiveness. Embedded dirt not only mars its beauty but actively reduces the life of rugs and must be properly addressed to protect your long-term investment. That’s where Superior Rug Cleaning enters the picture. Launched in 1985, Superior Rug Cleaning has focused specifically on pursuing and investing in new, state-of-the-art technology specifically to ensure your heirloom Oriental rug maintains its original beauty and quality. We hope you will find our recent interview with Kerry McDuffie, owner of Superior Rug Cleaning, both informative and instructional. MV: There’s no question that Specialty rugs are replacing wall-to-wall carpeting

in many American homes and businesses. Aside from their obvious visual differences, how do Oriental rugs differ from carpets? Kerry: Conventional carpeting is machine made and tufted with synthetic material, although cotton and wool are sometimes used in higher end wall-to-wall carpeting. Genuine Oriental or Specialty rugs, on the other hand, are created using natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and silk. These handcrafted rugs are woven one at a time, with artisans paying individual attention to detail, color, pattern, and the motif of each piece of art they are creating. These rugs are truly art for your floor.

MV: Does the use of all-natural fibers and organic dyes in the handcrafting of Oriental rugs require a different cleaning process than that used on conventional carpeting? Kerry: Absolutely. Because of the use of natural fibers, vegetable and plant dyes, meticulous care must be taken to ensure that dyes remain stable during the entire cleaning process. While wall-to-wall carpeting can be cleaned with high heat and strong cleaning agents, Oriental or Specialty rugs must be washed using pure deionized cold water and natural fiber safe washing agents, then thoroughly rinsed, and hung to dry in a temperature-controlled drying room. MV: How did your knowledge and experience in Oriental rug washing help you in the design and creation of your Farragut based facility? Kerry: After visiting numerous other rug-washing facilities nationally and attending a variety of schools and seminars, I decided to create a state-of-the-art rug washing boutique which combines the very best of all the methods I had experienced. Our 11-step washing process is designed to provide a rug washing experience unavailable anywhere else. We also installed a Centrum Force Rug Wash Floor to more enhance our cleaning capabilities. Using only water filtered by a Kinetico reverse osmosis system, clear, sanitary water washes your rugs to get them as clean as possible. The best way to describe the difference between this system and the traditional rug pit cleaning process is to com-

pare them to your choice of a morning shower or a bath. With a shower you always bathe in clean water. We are constantly educating ourselves to bring our clients the best cleaning methods available. When you selected your Oriental or Specialty rug, you invested in an item that is unique and nigh-irreplaceable. This investment, with proper care, can span not just your lifetime, but the lifetimes of your children and beyond. To protect it, the key is to have your rug properly serviced by someone who truly understands your rug’s unique cleaning needs. Dogwood Arts To Unveil New Dogwood Trail This Spring The West Hills Dogwood Trail opening April 1st

D

ogwood Arts is excited to announce the addition of the first new Dogwood Trail to be added to the Historic Dogwood Trails & Gardens program in more than 20 years. The West Hills Dogwood Trail made its official debut this spring with community leaders, Dogwood Arts, and the West Hills neighborhood homeowners celebrating the Grand Opening of the Trail with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community celebration at John Bynon Park on Thursday, March 24th from 4-6PM. Originally developed in the 1950s, West Hills was the city’s first major post-World War II subdivision and the first to consist primarily of modern ranch-style houses. The beauty of the West Hills neighborhood will be on full display during Knoxville’s favorite springtime celebration - with over 8 miles of blooming landscapes for the

public to enjoy adding to more than 85 miles along the 12 other Dogwood Trails all open April 1-30, 2022. While the West Hills Dogwood Trail was officially established in 2022, creating a Dogwood Trail requires years of preparation by homeowners and community organizers. Dogwood Arts recognizes the early efforts of the West Hills Garden Club and Beautification Committee, along with the foresight of original homeowners who planted dogwoods, maintained gorgeous

yards, and nurtured blooming gardens throughout the 60+ years of West Hills’ history. The West Hills Community Association has worked tirelessly to be recognized as an official Dogwood Trail since 2016 - following rigorous guidelines regarding community involvement and exceeding the expectations of the Dogwood Trails & Gardens Committee to make this dream a reality. “After spending several months during an historic pandemic, volunteers can-

vassed the neighborhood knocking on doors, leaving cards, and flyers, and speaking with more than 400 residents along the proposed route. The result was an astounding 97.5% positive response rate,” said Lee Hume, President of the West Hills Community Association. “Looking forward, having the Dogwood Trail will strengthen the bonds that unite our neighborhood. Becoming an official part of the Dogwood Arts Trails & Gardens program sets a standard of excellence that will not only encourage beautiful lawns and landscapes but will raise community pride.” The first Dogwood Trail was planted in 1955, and now you can ‘follow the pink lines’ through 85+ miles of architecturally diverse, blooming neighborhoods in all four quadrants of the city. The Dogwood Trails, Open Gardens, and Camera Sites are open to the public from April 1-30, 2022. The West Hills Dogwood Trail is sponsored by Daniel Park, Realty Executives. Find out more at dogwoodarts.com/trailsandgardens. Dogwood Arts, presented by ORNL Federal Credit Union, is a 501(c)3 organization with a mission to promote and celebrate our region’s art, culture, and natural beauty.

Is the caller really from the IRS?

T

he Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans experience some form of identity theft each year. It is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. These alarming statistics demonstrate that identity theft may be the most costly and prevalent crime in the United States. One identity theft scam that increases this time of year is the phone call where the caller claims to be from the IRS, and they need to obtain some of your personal information. They may state that your IRS refund is being delayed due to some incomplete information needed to process your tax return or “click here to get your stimulus payment”. They will request personal data such as your date of birth, social security number or your banking information. Everything they need to steal your identity and maybe even gain access to your checking account. Another way they attempt to obtain your information is to send you an email or text message. Such emails or text will look very official and will attempt to entice you to click on a link or respond to the text with your personal information. If it is an email and you click on the link, spyware is often loaded onto your computer allowing the scammer to gain access to your computer. Some phishing scams turn out to be ransomware schemes in which the cyberthief gains control of your computer and holds data hostage until a ransom is paid. They can change passwords, see your keystrokes allowing them access to your passwords, usernames and financial data. Once the thieves obtain your personal data, they can obtain fraudulent driver’s license, apply for loans, file fraudulent tax returns and obtain huge refunds in your

name and remove money from your checking and investment accounts. The emails, text messages and phone calls can be very convincing. The caller ID often shows the IRS or U.S. Treasury. Emails will often have the official seals and will be images of the real website. Text messages will look as if they are coming from the government. All designed to convince you that it is official. Other methods thieves use to obtain this information are Skimming – using a special device when your credit/debit card is processed; Phishing – an email pretending to be your financial institution or companies to persuade you to reveal your personal information; Change of Address – completing a change of address request to receive your mail. What can you do to prevent Identity Theft? DO NOT GIVE your personal information over the phone, mail or internet (especially if you get a call and you did not initiate the contact). Ask questions for verification. Rather than give them your personal information, ask them to tell you the information and you can verify it. For example, if it is your bank, they should already know your account number. Ask them to provide it to you and you can confirm it. Shred all your documents that contain your personal data. Do not just throw your bank statements, account statements, and other documents that contain your personal data in the trash without rendering the documents unreadable. When using the Internet, create hard to guess passwords, install anti-virus software and keep it up to date. Do not submit social security numbers or credit card in-

formation on websites that do not use encryption. Avoid using computers in public areas such as libraries, internet cafés. Place alerts on your credit cards to notify when your card is used to make a purchase. Take precautions at ATM machines or in check-out lanes to make sure no one can see your PIN. The IRS will not call you, text you or send you an email requesting your personal data. If you think it may be a valid contact, hang up and call the number on the back of your credit card or a phone number from your records rather than the number they provide you or the number they called from. If you think you have been scammed you should immediately contact your bank, credit card companies and notify them of the breach or potential breach and put a freeze on your accounts. Contact the IRS if you feel it may involve your taxes. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. They maintain a data base of identity theft cases. You can file a form with the IRS who will issue you a special PIN to use when filing your tax return. Use a monitoring program such as LifeLock to notify you if your personal information is being used without your knowledge. Basically, every business and individual is vulnerable to attack when it comes to your personal information and data. Take steps to protect your personal information and be alert to the deceptive way’s thieves are using to steal your data. The professionals at WarrenJackson can assist you if you feel your tax return or personal data may have been violated by a scammer. Call us if we can assist you.

A century later, Addison Moore—a stranger to Bisbee— visits Room 315, the site of Julia’s tragic suicide, where her ghost now famously roams. The riveting tale—told across the generations—is one of human bondage, furtive romance, secret connections, and ultimately—redemption. The opera won the top prize for Arizona Opera’s commission program, Arizona SPARK. Marble City Opera’s production will be the first time the opera is performed live on stage.

12B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, April, 2022

N

o, it’s not just you. Some of the mess and mounds of stuff in your garage is often just the busyness of life. However, without efficient storage and organization solutions, clutter and chaos will continue to plague you. If your garage looks chaotic, you can quickly gain control with custom garage storage cabinets from PremierGarage. PremierGarage, serving the Knoxville area for more than 15 years, will help you find storage space for just about everything. One of the biggest advantaged of custom garage cabinets is they are tailored to your specific space so you can maximize the available storage space. Cabinets are designed to fit around water heaters, electrical panels, doorways, and windows. You’ll get a clean, uniform look throughout your garage without having to piece together ready-made, do-it-yourself storage pieces. Styles include traditional cabinet doors or siding doors for enclosed cabinets in narrow spaces. Cabinets can be integrated with countertops, drawers, and wall-hanging storage systems to maximize your storage space. Sturdy one-inch-thick adjustable shelves inside the cabinets are 25 percent thicker than the industry standard and have a load-bearing capacity of 100 pounds. Other cabinet and storage options include: » Utilize unused garage ceiling space by having overhead racks installed. The heavy duty ceiling storage is perfect for seasonal or occasional use items. Overhead racks help keep wall and floor space clear so that cars, bicycles, and gardening tools, don’t have to compete

for space. » Adding locks to doors or drawers provides additional safety precautions to keep tools or toxic products like paint thinner, radiator coolant and fertilizer out of reach of children. » Slatwall with its various hooks and baskets is ideal for sports equipment and large tools like rakes, shovels, and hoses. Slatwall helps keep everything off the floor and close to the wall for easy accessibility. » A wide range of styles, finishes and colors let you coordinate your garage cabinets with your home’s existing décor, or you can create a whole new look for the garage. The perfect foundation for your garage cabinets is a durable custom garage floor. PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, or peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. Custom Closet Systems Keep the Family Organized and Happy

M

ost families have both organized and messy individuals, and they don’t always live in sweet harmony. Constantly tripping over someone’s shoes in the middle of the floor gets old and frustrating. Organization is not a natural inclination for everyone, but it is essential for a less stressful life. And when you live with others, it’s also a courtesy to maintain your own stuff and space. Tailored Living of Knoxville can help get life under control for all your family members with custom closet systems to meet the specific needs of each person. Kids’ Closets that Grow with Them It’s never too early to start introducing the habit of organization into your child’s world. Starting with a closet they can manage on their own or with a little help, this encourages them to be organized and responsible. There is no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all” kid’s closet, but a basic design includes: Preschool and Grade School » Low-level bins and shelves for toys and shoes they

can put away themselves » Tiered hanging rods multiply the hanging space and are adjustable as they grow » Drawers or slide-out baskets to put away socks, pajamas and underwear Middle School and Teen » Tiered hanging rods for long and short items, scaled to the child’s height » Adjustable shelves for clothes, shoes, books, and favorite collections » Decorative hooks create easy storage for jackets and backpacks » A pull-out laundry hamper corrals dirty clothes and keeps the floor clear » Drawers can organize folded clothes or be customized with dividers to hold small items Shared Master Closets that Keep the Peace A shared closet can be a perpetually frustrating experience, but it doesn’t have to be. With a carefully designed space, a shared closet can provide individual, organized storage

for two, accommodating both wardrobes and accessories. Each person will have space for what they need so they aren’t competing for territory by including: » His and hers hanging sections and drawers, including a jewelry drawer for her » Dedicated individual shoe racks » Shelves for folded items, hats, purses and more » Tilt-out hamper to toss dirty clothes » Specialty racks for belts, ties, and belts » Retractable valet rods are an extra hand for putting an outfit together or handling dry cleaning Whatever your needs, Tailored Living of Knoxville will design a custom closet for any member of your family. As whole-home organization specialists, Tailored Living also has innovative storage solutions for the pantry, laundry, home offices, garage and more. We help turn chaos into calm!

They pressed their key fob; their Touchless Cover was fully raised in 30 seconds or less. They lowered their boat lift, started their outboard engine and were off in 5 minutes or less. On a recent outing on the lake, we pressed our key fob. While our Touchless Cover was rising, we lowered our boat lift. We turned on the battery, started the blower and after the required interval, started our engine. We were off for an enjoyable day on the lake. And yes, we’re using our boat far more than before. And the spiders? I can’t explain it. They’ve mostly dis-

appeared. And our newly detailed boat looks just like it did on the showroom floor in 2007. Prepare for a season of fun in the sun on the lake without the long hours of detailing your boat by calling Patrick Boring at Lifetime Docks, LLC. Avoid the rush by calling Patrick today.

Like a Garage For Your Family Boat

T

By Tom Irmen

he 2022 boating season is about to get underway and so is the season of endless boat detailing if you don’t own a Touchless Boat Cover System from Lifetime Docks, LLC. Like other area boaters, we frequently see boats in docks, both private and some community docks that are protected by Touchless Boat Cover System. The concept is a simple one...create a garage for your boat that protects your watercraft like your home’s garage protects your vehicles. But it wasn’t until multiple boat owners on our community dock in Rarity Bay installed the Touchless Boat Cover that we made the decision to make the investment by redirecting a portion of the money we saved from a canceled 2020 Mediterranean cruise. Previously when we arrived at our dock for a day on the lake, we had to first clear away the cobwebs from the sides of our boat. Then we removed the straps that secured our boat cover and then removed the cover. We shook the cover off to shake off the spiders that remained before folding the cover and placing it in our dock box. We would wash the bird and spider droppings off the cover when we returned. Before we had started to wipe the cobwebs and spider droppings from the now exposed topside areas of our boat, the boat owners in the slip across from ours arrived.

Loudon County Habitat Receives Transformational Gift from MacKenzie Scott

oudon County Habitat for Humanity announced a $2 million gift from American author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Given as a part of a larger gift to Habitat for Humanity International and eighty-three other Habitat affiliates around the country, this transformational donation will substantially further Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has access to a safe, decent, and affordable place to live. “We were stunned and awed by this remarkable gift,” said Loudon County Habitat Executive Director, Tony Gibbons. “It was a total surprise, and we are so very grateful to have received this amazing opportunity to increase our impact in this community,” he continued. Loudon County Habitat only learned of the gift recently. Ms. Scott does not accept unsolicited requests for funding. Her advisors made inquiries through Habitat International about how affiliates achieve results in local communities. She and her advisers select nonprofits that have a track record of carrying out their missions successfully. She has explained her decision to give unrestricted, general operating gifts as a way to give charity leaders “maximum flexibility.”

Loudon County continues to lack affordable workforce housing as the area sees an increase in new businesses and expansion of existing companies. Additionally, with 37% of the current housing stock built before 1980, there is a growing need for preserving affordable housing. Loudon Habitat’s new construction and critical repair programs address both concerns. In addition to building affordable new houses for families who help build these homes, Habitat makes critical repairs for senior or disabled homeowners who cannot afford to make the needed repairs to make their homes safe and livable. To date Loudon Habitat has built 120 new houses and completed more than 100 critical repair projects. “This donation provides the opportunity to leverage our efforts and broaden our partnership base in a way that will significantly benefit local families who, up to now, have been unable to secure safe, affordable housing for their families,” said Gibbons adding, “Continued local support is essential for us to maximize this donation.” Each year, hundreds of volunteers provide the labor for Habitat’s program. These individuals come from churches, organizations, and other community

groups to work beside the families working toward homeownership. “Habitat works to bring down barriers and bring people together—to build a community where everyone, no matter who we are or where we come from, has a decent place to live,” said Loudon County Habitat Board Chair, Dr. Steve Prevatte, senior pastor at Community Church at Tellico Village. “This incredible gift helps make this work possible.” Loudon County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a worldwide Christian housing organization. All funds to build in Loudon County are raised locally to provide safe, affordable houses for low-income families who are willing to partner with Habitat. These partner families help build their houses and then buy them from Habitat through an affordable mortgage. Funds from these mortgages go into a Fund for Humanity which allows Habitat to build other houses. For more information, visit loudoncountyhabitat.org. To learn more about Habitat for Humanity International, visit habitat.org. Through shelter, we empower.
