We got the chance to catch up with the new co-owners, Ben and Devin, to discuss their backgrounds, business models, and where they see their company, CertaPro Painters, headed in the future. MV: You were both employees of CertaPro long before you became the owners; when did each of you begin your career, and what have you learned? Devin: I started in the painting industry in 2004 when I was still attending the University of Tennessee. After graduation, I began my career with CertaPro Painters.

In these 11 years, I have learned more skills than I could ever imagine such as project management, estimating, finance, leadership, emotional intelligence, and many others that come with running a business. After college, I wasn’t sure if I would continue my career with a painting company. However, CertaPro Painters is so much more than a painting company - we

are a customer service organization. By focusing on people in all aspects of our organization; from our customers to our painters to our management team, we’ve learned that building a team that takes pride in their work will translate into an organization that strives for excellence in customer service. We continue to focus on putting solid processes in place for our projects and having a high sense of

urgency around our customers’ needs. Ben: After attending UT, I worked in my family’s business that owned and operated 19 restaurants. My parents have always taught my sister and me the value of hard work, so it was no surprise that I had to start from the bottom, cleaning lobbies and bathrooms, and work my way up. It was an invaluable experience I have carried with me my whole career. My family sold that business in 2016, and I was able to join the CertaPro Painters team as a Residential Service Manager. I was immediately attracted to the culture of this company. CertaPro emphasized excellent customer service, and I fell in love with the CertaPro culture of developing people. I didn’t know much about painting, but my experience in management, leadership, and customer service allowed me to grow my career here. MV: Why did you decide to take over ownership of CertaPro when the Browns stepped down? Ben: When the opportunity came to purchase the business from Jeff and Joann, Devin and I knew we could not pass up the chance to own the business together. Continued on page 2A ...

With a combined 20 years of CertaPro experience, we were already familiar with the ins and outs, so it was a pretty seamless transition. Jeff and Joann had built such a successful team of people that we considered family, and we felt our leadership was the best way to keep that going. Devin: I feel like this was meant to be, and the past decade has prepared me for this. I was an employee of the organization, and I owe a lot of my own business development to the leadership and coaching I received from the Browns during that time. Ben came on board six years ago, and we have worked so well together. This is our first year in business as owners, and we are excited to continue leading East Tennessee’s best painting company! MV: The CertaPro experience has definitely left its mark on you both, as well as thousands of satisfied customers. What do you think makes your company so successful at what you do? Devin: We know there are many options out there when it comes to maintaining your home or business. One of the most important things that set us apart is our heavy emphasis on our processes, our people, and our level of service because we feel these three things are essential to earn trust. At the end of the day, without trust, we cannot be a successful business. Customers put a lot of trust in our team when we come out to repair and paint your home or business. We do everything in our power to earn and maintain that trust because we want to be your painting contractor of choice for many years to come. Ben: Our dedication to service, communication, and our customers’ overall experience is what makes us stand out. Having any contractor come into your personal space is not a pleasant process, but we try to make it easier. Our team is committed to showing up on time, not cutting corners, and leaving your property better than when we found it. We are so confident in our processes and level of service that we don’t even ask for money up front like most contractors do. This also ensures that we build trust into our customer relationships.

MV: From both your experiences working at CertoPro, it has been a superior place to work. What are your plans to keep fostering that environment in order to grow your business? Ben: We have always believed that a great business is nothing without great people. Everyone is valued and part of the family here. If our people enjoy what they do and feel comfortable and respected, Devin and I know they will do the same for our customers. Put simply: it all goes back to the Golden Rule. Devin: We put a lot of focus on the people who work in our organization. We want them to feel appreciated for the hard work they put in and to know that it actually counts for something at the end of the day. Homes and businesses are essential to everyday life in our community, and it’s important that we are able to help beautify, repair, or maintain them. When someone feels that sense of purpose, they will take pride in their work. When someone takes pride in their work, it will result in a level of customer service that is hard to match. MV: What are some services that CertaPro Painters offer that our readers might not be aware of? Ben: I am always surprised when people ask if we paint outside or if we only paint the interiors of homes. I like to tell people, “We will paint anything as long as it’s not a car!” While residential work is the largest part of our business, we have a very large commercial division that works with many companies in town everyone would recognize. We also have a carpentry division that can repair pretty much anything we come across. We want to be the one-stop shop for a customer. Devin: We actually offer a wide range of services that complement painting. For interiors, we can remove wallpaper, repair drywall, and install moldings. On exteriors, we can offer pressure washing, carpentry repairs, and we love re-building decks! Because we are a locally owned and operated business serving East Tennessee, our team consists of East Tennessee residents who are ready to

Author Tells the Story of His Brave Brother Who Sacrificed All

T

he recent guest speaker for the American Legion Post 256 is also a member of the Post and author of the book Heart of Gray. Richard Enners wrote the book to honor the life of his older brother, 1Lt Raymond J. Enners, who after graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, served his country with the Americal Division in Vietnam, where he was killed in the line of duty at the age of twenty-two. Heart of Gray is a riveting narrative of a leader-warrior who chose the “harder right instead of the easier wrong” when on 18 September 1968 in a brutal firefight near Xã Ky Mao, Quảng Ngãi Province he rescued a wounded squad leader ten meters from the NVA position then led his platoon into the thicket,

giving his life in the process. For his actions he received the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second highest award for valor. Heart of Gray takes you on a journey of selflessness and sacrifice—a journey of how 1Lt Enners’ rigorous military training provided the confidence and courage to face life threatening situations. July Highlights From the Publisher

hen I was growing up, I so looked forward to Fourth of July activities. My family lived in Northern California, and we’d often join our church family for times of celebration. The July 4th celebration was always a highlight at the local park with picnics, games and contests, later topping off the day with drawing “pictures” in the air with sparklers, and of course a fantastic fireworks display over the lake in the middle of the park. I still look forward to July 4th celebrations, but for different reasons. Oh, I still enjoy fireworks, but what means the most is what our country has always stood for and the freedoms we hold dear. We feel so blessed to live in East Tennessee where we are surrounded by so many who share our love for America. As you peruse the pages of this month’s issue, please take a moment to re-read the Declaration of Independence as well as the Preamble to the Constitution located on page 11B. Some may roll their eyes at this suggestion, but I’m guessing our readers won’t. The Declaration states a list of inalienable rights, “among those are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” I remember having a discussion with our then 16-year-old son at breakfast; he said “The Declaration of Independence says we have the right to PURSUE happiness - not the right TO happiness. It is our responsibility to go after it - not have the government give it to us.” That is the heart of the entrepreneurial spirit! Being an entrepreneur now for well over 30 years and knowing what is required to start and remain in business, I am a big supporter of the small business community. Anyone who truly embraces entrepreneurship has experienced the emotional roller coaster of managing and growing a company; those ups and downs can be dizzying in today’s ever changing economic environment. It takes passion, focus, determination, discipline, and delayed gratification along with a financial plan and a solid marketing strategy to create and sustain a business. This is not for the weak of heart. That is why I applaud all our small business partners that we at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views represent in today’s exciting business environment. If you have the entrepreneurial spirit, I encourage you to consider pursuing your dreams. Is it risky? Yes, there are risks, but the rewards are there for those who are persistent and consistent. This July 4th we celebrate our country’s independence, and that independence has provided the opportunity to set our own destinies. Let’s not forget that small business is the engine that drives our economy and we at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views remain your largest fan. So, this July 4th, take the time to reflect on your freedoms and celebrate America. And take time to enjoy family while building memories for your kids that will last a lifetime. ow, what a rollercoaster the financial markets have been this first half of 2022. The euphoria of the 2020 and 2021 pandemic recovery has given way to angst about inflation, supply chain blockages and international conflict. If you’re well diversified, sometimes the best thing to do is literally nothing. Not giving way to emotional investment decisions is key to building long-term wealth in the markets. What do I mean by “well-diversified”? It’s an often-used term in the financial world. Typically, we think of diversification as having your invested assets spread among many asset classes, defined by size of the company or the type of industry. It’s impossible to predict which asset class will be the winner (or big loser) in any given year, so the premise is to have your nest egg spread among large cap, mid cap and small cap companies, and then further spread among value and growth, with bond

funds thrown in for risk diversification. But I also take diversification one step further, especially if you are in, or quickly approaching, retirement. Peace of mind comes with allocating your wealth across 3 major categories: financial markets, bank accounts and insurance companies, rather than solely financial markets. If you’re over 60, the days of swinging for the fences have passed and now you are focused on preserving what you’ve saved while still having steady predictable growth that can outpace inflation and sustain your lifestyle. » Having a sufficient rainy-day and planned expense reserve in the banks is key. Yes, interest rates are low, but you still need some liquid “safe” money. » Look to A rated insurance companies for tax-deferred annuities as another safer haven. Your principal is not subject to market loss and can provide a predictable rate of return. This strategy is often overlooked or misunderstood. Re-Inventing Normal

ver the past ten months or so most churches, and secular institutions for that matter, have sought to return to the customs and practices that are familiar and routine. How’s that going for you? Our Congregation has done a very good job in re-establishing the worship practices, outreach programs and fellowship events that defined us in the pre-Covid world. All is as it should be in that regard. Nonetheless, something is different. We have all been affected one way or the other by the Covid experience and the often-nasty debate about related public policy. In addition, we have all heard or read about current issues in the broader society - increases in violent crime, angry outbursts, and general rudeness. As individuals, and as citizens, we have been changed in unexpected ways by our experiences and the interruption of our “normal” lives. We had another congregational hymn sing just recently, an encore to one held ten months ago. That prior hymn-sing was jubilant, celebrating the fact that we had returned, for the most part, to our usual worship practices. This most recent one was heartfelt and enthusiastic, but several members commented that they particularly appreciated having a respite from the current news and the daily trials. “The world is too much with us,” we read in Wordsworth’s poem of that title. Shepherd of the Lake is a congregation, but it is not apart from the world it is of it. Our pastor, church leadership and members recognize that, though it may feel like the world is indeed too much with us, we cannot be distracted from our mission of “sharing God’s love with the World.” It is more important now, perhaps, than in so called “better times.” Every day, it seems, there is something new to remind us of human failures, causing us to be discouraged or fearful. There have been other times just like this, and most of us have experienced them or read about them in history, or the Bible for that matter. We can take solace from that. More importantly, we can do something in response to woes of the world by reaching out to those in need. Our congregation supports numerous outreach efforts -from food pantries to prison ministry to women’s shelters and so forth. Members volunteer time and talent to help others, and in doing so receive satisfaction from their efforts and gratitude from those served. Service to others is a great antidote for worry and fear. So is thankfulness. We are blessed in many ways, but often forget to consider all we have. We are surrounded by natural beauty, have the support of family and/or friends and access to most anything we might need or want. When fearful or discouraged, it is well to contemplate that which makes us most thankful. We can give thanks spontaneously where and when we are inspired to do so. We can certainly and appropriately also give thanks in our churches or houses of worship. Some things never change. June Fund Raiser to Achieve Good Shepherd Mission

s a part of a new fund-raising drive, which began in June and will continue through August, to assist the Good Shepherd Center, every resident and business in Monroe County will receive a direct appeal to help our neighbors in need. In the personal letter, the Center has described how the funds will be used and how they will impact the lives of your neighbors and friends. Margaret Cummings, President of the Board said, “Certainly Covid and inflation conditions have increased demand and placed our clients in challenging positions. We have to continue to seek additional sources of funding as food prices and gas have increased our costs as well as our clients cost of living. This year is special; we are giving our supporters the option to designate a percentage of their contribution towards the expansion of our existing building. Plans are in place, designs finalized, grounds surveyed, and bids are being taken; this addition will allow greater levels of service.” If you are considering charitable giving during the year, you should speak with your CPA regarding using the “Qualified Charitable Deduction” rule to save on potential taxes. If you are 72 or above, you may have RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) issues with your IRA/SEP plans. You can donate your RMD values directly to the Good Shepherd - up to $100,000 - and not count that donation or money as taxable income! Instead of simply sending cash or checks to the Good Shepherd Center, individuals have multiple options. You can use investments/stocks or homes/property that have appreciated and donate the increase in the value of stock over your costs to the charity. If you donate the stock itself, the Good Shepherd can convert the stock to cash and not pay taxes on the gain either. From a longer-term perspective, in developing a Will/Trust, you might consider including the Good Shepherd as a beneficiary; any monies passed to the Center will not be considered taxable. This is one reason the Good Shepherd Center has created an Endowment Fund to assist in building long-term sustainability. Tina Smith, Executive Director of the Good Shepherd Center stated, “We believe that if the great folks of Monroe County consider their giving and their tax and life planning, they will consider including the Mission of the Good Shepherd Center in their prayers.” What does Good Shepherd Provide? Good Shepherd serves approximately 1000 people and provides approximately 30,000 lbs. of free food per month, along with free clothing. In addition, we offer other programs: » The Kid Friendly Food Program offering meals/snacks when school’s out » The Christmas in July Program providing back-to-school clothing » The ETHRA Transportation Program » The Layette Program providing all kinds of items for newborns » The Free Eyeglass Program » The Winter Coat Program » Utilities assistance program This year’s effort is extremely important. “Normally in the past, we would hold one major event, but because of continuing economic concerns, we are going to stay with a direct mail program,” stated Tina Smith, Executive Director of the Center. “We pray that our Monroe County residents will find it in their hearts to donate what they can afford to the Good Shepherd”. People can make a one-time donation or a pledge over time: monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually. Any level of donation is appreciated. Contributions are tax deductible. Jason: In total, I have 24 years of electrical experience. Of those 24 years, 10 are in residential work, 10 are in union commercial/industrial work (including public works jobs), and 4 are in my own business. While in Tennessee, I obtained my LLE (Limited Licensed Electrician) license and my CE (Electrical Contractor) license. I am also bonded and insured. MV: What are some of the most common electrical jobs that you do? Jason: General service and repair, troubleshooting power loss and GFCI problems, panel upgrades, safety upgrades to panels and dock power, and electric car charger installations. MV: What makes you different than other electricians our readers might use? Jason: I have both my LLE and my CE electrician licenses. I am the owner-operator, which means I answer the phone, give the estimates, and do the work myself. I also don’t sell customers services they may not need. honestly couldn’t imagine being anywhere else than Lenoir City; the place I’ve called home for 26 years. Most don’t realize the diversity of animals we have right here in our backyards, and I love teaching others about our wildlife and the importance of protecting it. Photography has been a part of my life since 2009, and to this day I can remember sitting on my back porch just photographing all my backyard birds. I didn’t really know anything about the birds, or my camera, but I just know I loved it and would do it nearly every day. For me, being out in nature with my camera is a way to escape reality. I love learning about our amazing planet and sharing with others what I have learned over the years brings me so much joy. I would describe myself as a natural-light photographer, always looking for that perfect light to go along

with my photos. I typically shoot during those golden hours of the day which can be found during sunrise and sunset, not only resulting in better photos, but also gives a much better chance to see wildlife - as they are usually most active during these times.

I do enjoy all types of photography, including sports, portraits, still life, food, real-estate, weddings, photojournalism, but wildlife and nature has my heart. I am also a certified photographer through State Tech/Pellissippi Community College. Even though I was self-taught, going through this program helped me develop other skills and opened up a whole new world of photography. To this day, I am always out when I get free time. Between work and all the adult duties those free times come less often, but when I they do, I know exactly what I want to do. And now I get to share some of these special moments with my baby girl, Addilyn, who enjoys being outside as much as I do. I started photographing her around the summer of 2014. Word is she is estimated to be roughly 20 years old. She and her mate claim a little spot along the Clinch River here in Loudon County and have been successful at raising many eaglets. Wildlife typically has their own routines, kind of like us humans, and being able to watch her for years, I have learned where her favorite perches are and am (somewhat) able to predict her moves. Kalley uses a Canon 7d markii, paired with a Canon 100400mm lens for all of her photos.

The water was perfectly calm this day to get her reflection on the water as she admired her beauty; I like to think this anyway. Really, she was just getting a quick sip of water on this warm morning after just finishing her fish meal. You never really grasp how large a Bald Eagle until they are down on the ground right in front you. Female Bald Eagles are much larger than their male mates, and more dominant, standing at 2.5-3 feet. It’s a truly amazing sight.

Eagle on Rock - A missed attempt at breakfast caused this Bald Eagle to land on a nearby rock in front of her. She sat in this lovely spot for a while, just looking over her territory along the Clinch River here in Loudon County.

To be this close to a wild Bald Eagle just doesn’t happen often (here in Tennessee anyway); if it did, it wouldn’t be nearly as special. She spooked me as she flew in behind me and landed right in front of me to grab a drink of water. This was the closest she has ever allowed me to be. Everything came together perfectly to create this beautiful portrait with the beautiful blue water as the backdrop. I love being able to see every detail on her! This day, I really don’t know what her plan was when she glided over next to me. She didn’t catch anything, or take a drink of water, but just sat beside me looking over the water for roughly 15 minutes. I believe she was fishing and decided to do it from the ground this day. It was a cold, peaceful morning with just the two of us before she left and flew right in front of me. She didn’t seem to have any kind of mission, but just returned to a favorite perch of hers for most of the day.

For the few folks out there that have virgin hair (hair that has had no chemical treatments), exposure to the sun will normally have a very desirable affect on your hair. Very dark hair can lighten up to a nice auburn, brown hair can lighten up to a nice golden blonde, and lighter hair can become almost absent of pigment by the end of summer. Most enjoy what the sun can do to virgin hair, and no treatments or maintenance is required. However, if you treat your hair with color, the sun can be one of your most dangerous enemies. Constant exposure to the sun with hair color can commonly cause the hair to take on a tonal value that your colorist may refer to as being ‘brassie’. This is the warming affect the sun has on your created hair color that causes it to take on a yellowish or even orange look. urs was a little different home building journey. We enjoyed living in a small mountain village in Germany for the past thirty years. When we started to plan our retirement in the US, we wanted to try building a home of our own. Though we had visited Tellico Village several times over the past five years, we ended up having to purchase our Mialaquo lot from Germany, at the beginning of the pandemic, with the help of our realtor’s phone video. After reviewing several local builder’s websites and interviewing Kit Keener over the phone, we felt very comfortable starting the building process from across the Atlantic Ocean. Lavender: The Useful Plant

ow many times do you use the phrase “stop and smell the roses?” This sentiment also applies to many plants and especially to lavender. One of my favorite places in the University of Tennessee Gardens, Knoxville is the Herb Spiral. Not only is the spiral a wonderful display of herbs, but it also features beautiful lavender growing among its rocks. The particular plant is Spanish lavender (Lavandula stoechas). With its “bunny ears” appearance, just looking at it makes you smile because it looks so happy. And the bees love it! Lavender belongs to the genus Lavandula, which includes 45 different species and more than 450 varieties, with still more in development by plant breeders! This wide variety allows for a vast array of bloom times, foliage, and flower colors. Many people are familiar with English lavender (Lavandula angustofolia), which boasts 39 cultivars. It is also called common lavender or true lavender. Equally familiar is French lavender (Lavandula dentata), known as fringed lavender, so named due to its toothed leaf shape. Portuguese lavender (Lavandula latifolia) has spike-like flowers and is very aromatic. A popular interspecific hybrid is Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia), a cross of the English and Portuguese types. It is cold hardy like the English lavender but also heat tolerant like the Portuguese types. Finally, there is Spanish lavender (Lavandula stoechas), which is sometimes referred to, confusingly enough, as French lavender, but more descriptively as butterfly lavender. This type features distinctive wing-like petals and is often used for potpourri. Do not limit your color palette thinking that this beautiful herb comes only in lilac, blue, or lavender. Other bloom colors available are violet blue, rose, pale pink, white, and yellow! Many cultivars grow well in Tennessee, including ‘Provence’, ‘Hidecote’, ‘Phenomenal’, and ‘Munstead’. Like many herbs, lavender is a plant of varied uses. Because of its wonderful, soothing fragrance, silver grey foliage, and delicate flowers, lavender is often used in essential oils, candles, soaps, hydrosols, culinary, and other types of artisanal products. If you ever want a challenge with a beautiful reward, try making a lavender wand. There are plenty of online sources to help you make a lovely, fragrant bundle!

One of the most common uses of lavender is for aromatherapy. Lavandula angustifolia is the recommended species for making essential oils. Take care when applying any essential oil directly to the skin, as the undiluted oil may cause skin irritation for some people. Dilute an essential oil by mixing a few drops with a carrier oil such as jojoba or coconut oil. Do a little research about the ratio before mixing your own. Speaking of research, studies conducted in healthcare settings measured the efficacy of lavender in reducing anxiety, stress, and increasing sleep quality. A study conducted in

2019 looked at the effects of lavender oil patches on patients in a hematology-oncology setting. Patients who agreed to participate received a lavender patch attached to their gown or shirt at the start of the evening shift. The patients were able to inhale the scent of lavender during the night to determine if they felt less anxiety and experienced better sleep. The patch was removed in the morning when the patient was awake and active. Although it was a small study, its results indicated that some patients reported better sleep quality and milder anxiety when they were wearing the lavender patch. Other researchers in the healthcare settings are looking at the benefits of lavender in patients undergoing chemotherapy or those with dementia, headaches, stress, anxiety, or sleep disorders. Most lavenders grown in Tennessee are either the English, French, or the Spanish types. Typically, the English lavenders are more cold hardy and the Spanish types are more heat tolerant which, based on your location, may dictate your choice. There are a few growing requirements common for most species. Lavenders perform best in well-drained soil and lots of sun. A neutral to slightly alkaline soil is best. Amending the soil with sand or some fine grit will help the drainage. Do not plant lavender too deep. A good practice is to have it slightly above the soil line with soil mounded around the base. This allows the water to drain away from the plant. Since lavender likes heat, you can add some pea gravel around the base of the plant so heat is reflected up onto the plant. It also dresses up your beautiful lavender! There is really nothing to lose when you grow lavender. It has so many uses, it is a beautiful and hardy plant, and it is very celebrated, so you can put attending lavender festivals on your fun activity list! As with many herbs, there is always something new to learn about lavender, a truly useful plant. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. kitchen pantry of the past was usually just a small reach-in closet that had a few, nonadjustable shelves for food storage. Today’s pantries, whether a walk- or reach-in, are larger and should be designed to maximize storage. They even can serve as a morning coffee station or prep area. If you’re planning your pantry for a renovation or new home, there are several important ideas to keep in mind: Design Doors that Open Out - Adding a door that opens into the pantry minimizes valuable storage space, so make sure the door swings out. Include a Counter – If you have the space, include a countertop to set bags of groceries on while they are being loaded into the pantry. You can also use the countertop for minor prep work. This area should be at least 15.5 inches deep. Include Electrical Outlets – Place electrical outlets just above the counter. This allows you to use small appliances like a coffee maker or toaster. There are a number of small appliances you may want to plug in. Even if you don’t plan to include any, you never know what you’ll want in the future, and at that point it’s too late to easily add them. Plan on Adjustable Shelving – Altering the height of your shelves will accommodate various sizes of food products and small appliances.

Use a Section of Deeper Shelving – If your pantry is large enough, using deeper shelving gives you space to store bigger appliances, such as toaster ovens, slow cookers or mixers. In addition to keeping these appliances within reach when you need them, you’ll also free up valuable real estate in the kitchen. Choose Good Lighting – Lighting doesn’t have to be expensive. Just make sure it’s functional. Without good lighting, you won’t be able to see that can of soup at the back of the shelf. Include Special Storage Components – Think about what you want to store in your pantry. Would slide-out baskets for snacks be useful? What about vertical slotted spaces to store baking pans and serving platters? Would scoop-front drawers be useful? Happy Birthday, America Land that I Love!

On the anniversary of our Independence, let’s take a few moments to pause and consider the words of our founding fathers found within two of the documents most responsible for shaping our country and our freedoms.

The Declaration of Independence IN CONGRESS, JULY 4, 1776 The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,

--That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce

them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.--Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only. He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people. He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within. He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands. He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers. He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries. He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance. He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures. He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power. He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation: For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us: For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States: For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world: For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent: For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury: For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies: For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments: For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever. He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us. He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people. He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation. He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands. He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions. In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people. Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
