New Machine Enhances Oriental Rug Cleaning Capabilities Even More

BEFORE

By Kerry McDuffie, Owner – Superior Rug Cleaning

H

ow long did it take you to find that perfect Oriental or Persian Specialty area rug for your home that just brought your whole home to life? How many hours did you spend looking at rug after rug, looking for just the right colors and the perfect design to complement your own unique style? One of the biggest investments you can make in any living space is selecting the perfect, genuine Oriental or Persian area rug. These rugs are each unique expressions of pure art. Created from natural fibers and woven one at a time to match the vision of the artisan, your Specialty rug is truly irreplaceable, and an heirloom that can be passed down from generation to generation. With such a large investment of not only money, but also time, you obviously want to protect its longevity and attractiveness. Embedded dirt not only mars its beauty but actively reduces the life of rugs and must be properly addressed to protect your long-term investment. That’s where Superior Rug Cleaning enters the picture. Launched in 1985, for over 37 years Superior Rug Cleaning has focused specifically on pursuing and

investing in new, state-of-the-art technology specifically to ensure your heirloom Oriental rug maintains its original beauty and quality. Superior Rug Cleaning has again added new technology to enhance their Specialty rug cleaning capabilities, an Ergin Rug Centrifuge. This month, we interview Kerry McDuffie, the owner of Superior Rug Cleaning, to find out additional information on the new machine and his thoughts on the delicate cleaning process for Oriental or Persian Specialty Rugs. MV: Tell us about your new machine. Kerry: I am really excited about the addition of the Rug Centrifuge to our cleaning process! The centrifuge enhances our Oriental area rug cleaning capabilities quite a bit. Most issues that can occur with Oriental area rug cleaning have to do with drying times after they are washed. After a rug is washed, of course, it needs to be dried. The longer it takes for the water to evaporate, the more potential problems can arise, such as potential dye migration and some return of minor pet urine odors. The Rug Centrifuge rapidly spins the pre-washed rolled up area rug to remove 90-95% of the water within a few minutes, greatly reducing issues resulting from

longer drying times. It also helps flush out pet urine that might have been left over from urine-soaked rugs. In addition, since we can dry your rug so much faster, the overall wait time for your rug cleaning project will be reduced significantly. MV: You have been in the Specialty rug cleaning business for a long time. Can you tell us more about yourself and your business philosophy? Kerry: Absolutely! I have been married to my lovely wife, Sharon, for 42 years. We have two kids and six grandchildren. Superior Rug Cleaning is a local family run company. I have been in business cleaning rugs here in the Knoxville area now since 1985. I have over 37 years of experience cleaning many different types of Oriental

Specialty rugs. In that time, I’ve gone through extensive training, and I learned how to use the right method for different types of high-end rugs. You need to adjust for the material of the rug, the colors, the age, and the type of stain. For example, cotton rugs often need more special handling because they can have more dye migration than rugs made of other materials. I guess much of my business philosophy can be summed up as, “Quality First.” I firmly believe that the quality of the job I do is remembered long after price is forgotten; I won’t compromise on quality since my reputation is at stake I take pride in being honest and up-front with customers. cleaning, I will give you an honest evaluation of what our cleaning process can and can’t do for your rug. MV: There’s no question that Specialty rugs are replacing wall-to-wall carpeting in many American homes and businesses. Aside from their obvious visual differences, how do Oriental rugs differ from carpets? Kerry: Conventional carpeting is machine made and tufted with synthetic material, although cotton and wool are sometimes used in higher end wall-to-wall carpeting. Genuine Oriental or Specialty rugs, on the other hand, are created using natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and silk. These handcrafted rugs are woven one at a time, with artisans paying individual attention to detail, color, pattern, and the motif of each piece of art they are creating. These rugs are truly art for your floor. MV: Does the use of all-natural fibers and organic dyes in the handcrafting of Oriental rugs require a different cleaning process than that used on conventional carpeting? Kerry: Absolutely. Because of the use of natural fibers, vegetable and plant dyes, meticulous care must be taken to ensure that dyes remain stable during the entire cleaning process. While wall-to-wall carpeting can be cleaned with high heat and strong cleaning agents, Oriental or Specialty rugs must be washed using pure deionized cold water and natural fiber safe washing agents, then thoroughly rinsed, run through our new centrifuge, and then hung to dry in a temperature-controlled drying room. MV: How did your knowledge and experience in Oriental rug washing help you in the design and creation of your Farragut based facility? Kerry: After visiting numerous other rug-washing facilities nationally and attending a variety of schools and seminars, I decided to create a state-of-the-art rug washing boutique which combines the very best of all the methods I had experienced. Our 11-step washing process is designed to provide a rug washing experience unavailable anywhere else. We also installed a Centrum Force Rug Wash Floor to more enhance our cleaning capabilities. Using only water filtered by a Kinetico reverse osmosis system, clear, sanitary water washes your rugs to get them as clean as possible. The best way to describe the difference between this system and the traditional rug pit cleaning process is to compare them to your choice of a morning shower or a bath. With a shower you always bathe in clean water. We are constantly educating ourselves to bring our clients the best cleaning methods available. MV: Anything else you’d like to add? Kerry: All throughout our 37 years in business, our company has remained committed to delivering the highest level of quality and customer satisfaction in the industry. Hundreds of satisfied customers give testimony to that fact. “Quality plus service equals superior value… guaranteed!” When you selected your Oriental or Specialty rug, you invested in an item that is unique and nigh-irreplaceable. This investment, with proper care, can span not just your lifetime, but the lifetimes of your children and beyond. To protect it, the key is to have your rug properly serviced by someone who truly understands your rug’s unique cleaning needs.

August Highlights From the Publisher

E

ven though it’s been more than a few decades since I was in school, August still signals the beginning of the end of summer for me. As we go into the last full month of the summer season, families have a final chance to take that vacation before school starts. The closer it comes to the first day back hitting the books, there is always the back-to-school shopping rush for supplies and clothing. And there is the excitement going into the new football season plus the cooler days of fall. In a little over a month, we’ll have lived in beautiful East Tennessee for a year. We’re still discovering new things about our new home state and are even more thrilled to call ourselves Tennesseans! One thing we’ve noticed is that LIVE music is very important – or possibly just more available. Either way, opportunities abound to enjoy great music. Music brings such joy to my heart in a way nothing else does, so this is just another added blessing to living here. We recently had the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful evening at the Windy Hill Farm & Preserve as a part of their concert series. I’ve never been to a concert in such a beautiful setting! Read more about them, their new restaurant, and the concert series on pages 1B and 2B. Getting to know the awesome people who call Tennessee home is another added blessing. Meeting and working with new and existing clients who live out character and a servant spirit is truly an honor. Kerry McDuffie of Superior Rug Cleaning shared his amazing facility and equipment with us. This man knows rugs and how to provide quality service! We were also truly impressed with Josh Allen and his staff at Allen Insurance. Just meeting them, you can tell they care so much about their clients. August does have some great activities that you and your family can enjoy while the weather is still pleasant. Boating, hiking, and all things outdoor are abundantly available. Combine the awesome outdoor activities with the beauty of our area, then add to that the amazing people who live and work here – East Tennessee can’t be beat.

ARE YOU READY FOR THE CALL? By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

I

t’s like a lightning strike when the phone rings and you hear the news that your parent has had a stroke and is on his way to the hospital. That’s what happened to me a few years ago, and I still remember exactly where I was when I got the call that my dad had a stroke, and my life turned upside-down. Those were scary times for my mom and for me, not knowing what his recovery might look like, or if he would survive. And yet, daily finances still had to be taken care of – bills paid, tax returns filed, insurance claims pursued. I’m lucky enough to say that with rehab and excellent care, Dad has made an almost full recovery. My profession leant itself to making sure my parents were prepared to deal with this lifeshattering event, and I want to make sure you are too. Whether it’s your spouse or your parents, the critical first

step is to be informed. Imagine for a moment that your loved one couldn’t communicate with you – what would you need to know on their behalf? Here are some important points to consider BEFORE life throws you the unwanted curve ball: » Do you know where their legal documents are? If they are alive, but incapacitated, you need a financial power of attorney to act on their behalf. This should be included in their legal documents, along with a will and healthcare directives. » Do you know their online passwords? We’re moving more and more to an online world for financial transactions – don’t endure the headache of not knowing how to access their accounts. » Do you know their cell phone password and social media passwords? » Do they have long term care insurance to help pay for their care? If so, what insurance company is it with and does it pay for in-home care or only a skilled facility? » If they don’t have long term care insurance, which assets

were they planning to use first to pay for their care? » Do you know if they have a safe deposit box? You should be an authorized signer on it if you aren’t already. » If it’s your parents, do you have a key to their home and know their alarm password? » If it’s your parents, do you have a list of the medications they are taking and a copy of their Medicare cards and Medicare Supplement cards? Being prepared goes beyond the merely financial. Doing this work now will allow you to focus on your loved one’s care and recovery if that time comes. If you need help, let me know. I can help make the complexities of life easier. Marsh Wealth Management, LLC Fiduciary Registered Investment Advisor 504 Ebenezer Road Knoxville, TN 37923 865-622-2162 www.marshwealth.com

A course of Halotherapy is recommended to achieve lasting results for airway cleansing, congestion relief, skin refreshment, and inflammation reduction - not to mention stress relief!

Halotherapy comes from the Greek word Halos, meaning Salt. In this therapy, salt is fed through a halogenerator to heat, crush, and grind it into fine particles. Those particles are then dispersed using a dry spray aerosol to be inhaled by the nose and mouth - expelling pollutants and opening breathing passages - or absorbed topically to penetrate skin conditions. This therapy kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and expands airways to benefit those struggling with: • Breathing issues from allergies, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, sinus infections, cough, and sinusitis. • Skin conditions including dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and eczema. • And chronic ailments like ear infections, cystic fibrosis, rhinitis, and ENT issues.

believeRX & believeRXtra –

Equipping You to “Live Your Best Life” L ocal pharmacist and entrepreneur, Ellen Phillips, operates a unique, client-centered concept in pharmaceutical care: believeRX, located at 9627 Countryside Center Lane near the intersection of Middlebrook Pike and Bob Kirby Road in Knoxville. Ellen and her compassionate, caring team of highly trained pharmaceutical associates have a mission to provide traditional pharmacy services combined with a holistic approach to health and well-being. believeRX recognizes that your local pharmacy can and should play an important role in your family’s total healthcare and wellness in partnership with your other healthcare providers. believeRX combines the personal and caring touch of the now almost non-existent neighborhood pharmacy with today’s rapidly evolving healthcare industry. Ellen and her team have created a holistic and interactive approach to your pharmaceutical experience designed to equip you to “Live Your Best Life.” believeRX is a full-service traditional pharmacy where you can get all of your medications and supplements, as well as receive a personal approach to your health. We believe there is more than one way

to prevent or treat disease and we offer alternative therapies such as Halotherapy (dry salt therapy for breathing conditions, skin and mental well-being), infrared heat sauna sessions, peptides, and a large selection of high-quality supplements such as Terry Naturally products, and many more. believeRX is very different from the “national chain” pharmacy you are used to. Believing it’s time to focus on patients, not just their prescribed medications, staff members even receive additional training to become Certified Health Coaches. Ellen and her team strive to provide a custom-tailored experience for each customer/ patient by treating them as a whole individual and not just their specific ailments or prescription medications. Their name says it all, “We Believe in You” and your goal for better health, well-being, and longevity. In addition, to believeRX, Ellen and her team of health-conscious professionals have created believeRXtra in the same location, offering fresh, healthy great tasting fresh juices, smoothies, and bowls, made with real ingredients and without any added sugar. They are sweetened with only natural sweeteners such as local honey or agave - and they taste fantastic!

Medical grade protein, Blender Bombs, YourSuper, CBD Oil, MCT oil, collagen, and many other options to help promote weight loss round out the offerings to help equip you to maintain good health, and break sugar addiction! Choose from a wide variety of smoothie flavors such as: Chocolate Thunder, Mango Margarita, Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie, Acai Blueberries, Guava Berry, or Matcha Green Tea, just to name a few. If a fresh juice is more to your craving, try Anti-inflammatory Juice, Immune Booster, Summertime Mojito, Creamsicle, Tropical Carrot or one of the many other symptom fighting or just plain healthy, but always delicious, recipes. Smoothie bowls are a great option for those interested in more “crunch.” From Dragon Fruit Bowls or Chocolate Teddy Graham Bowls to Guava Protein Bowls or Acai Banana Berry Bowls, (or one of the numerous other choices) believeRXtra is sure to have a menu item you’ll love. Remember the old-fashioned pharmacies of the 60’s? Like believeRX, they also featured personal, caring service and after-hours home delivery, when needed. Some even had ice cream and soda fountains. Also, like

believeRX, they were very different from many assembly-line medical pharmacies of today. Those pharamicists knew their customers and treated them as individuals and friends. Going into a large, chain pharmacy, many feel treated like only a number. Lately, some of them are so bureaucratic and disorganized that it would be a step-up for them to treat people like a number! It is refreshing and encouraging that believeRX still believes in personal, caring, and holistic customer service. believeRX even has a modern/healthy version of the old-fashioned soda fountain: believeRXtra Fresh Juices and Smoothies! To experience a friendly, caring pharmacy that you might have thought no longer existed in today’s big box, assembly-line pharmacy world, you are invited to visit believeRX or believeRXtra today! believeRX/believeRXtra

Calendar Constraints

W

By Steve Dormer, Council President

e all live by calendars of one sort or another. Our common master calendar is the one that the western world adopted in the eighteenth century. For most of us, it’s hard to imagine how the world got along at all before that. We keep track of all the important holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries with that calendar. We predict the weather-assisted by the Farmer’s Almanac - based on our past memories of July or March. The daily calendar keeps us grounded, organized, and heading in the right direction. It’s essential for modern life but it is not sufficient. We need additional calendars to manage our affairs. I worked most of my life for public companies; much of our effort and anxiety was attributable to the quarterly earnings report calendar. I’m retired many years now, but I can still feel my blood pressure rise at each quarter’s end. I believe that one of the most indelible calendars is the school calendar. Much of our childhood was organized around it and then, later in life, we experience it again with our children. Though, as parents, our attitude toward summer’s beginning and end may be the obverse of our children’s, I don’t think we ever shake the feeling that life is run by different rules during summer than during the rest of the year. We certainly eat differently and wear different clothing. More importantly, we adopt more relaxed attitudes and engage in summer nostalgia for the music, movies, and activities of our younger days. Formal church calendars, for the most part, don’t correspond to secular calendars. The readings, lessons and services continue according to their own calendars, and they vary by denomination. Church calendars are ancient and filled with drama. Back in the day, wars were fought over the scheduling of Easter on the church calendar and disagreements still remain. Individual congregations do make accommodations; nonetheless, adult bible studies are often suspended, and Vacation Bible Schools added for instance. In most congregations, Sunday attendance declines a bit as people take their summer vacations. In our congregation, attendance is only slightly lower than the average for the rest of the year and most of our activities continue, particularly those associated with outreach ministries. Nonetheless, summer thinking prevails. As is the case with many congregations, we plan for September as if we were starting a new year and need to welcome back those who have been on vacation. Many congregations have “rally days” and congregational picnics to signal the unofficial beginning of the new Church year. It’s hard to shake old habits. I think one of the most familiar sights in our congregation is two members staring at their cell phone calendars and trying to schedule a meeting. These days doing the work of the kingdom requires the collision of the virtual and the actual. Our calendars remind us that our time is limited and, like all finite resources, must be rationed. We spend a lot of time figuring out the best ways to use a lot of time. Nonetheless, despite its constraints and our personal experience of summer, the calendar does not grant us a vacation. We may dress differently, eat outside more often, and spend time on the water but our outreach, in-reach, and caring activities continue without a break. This year it feels to me that are members are busier than usual. I suppose that is only natural when your mission and the message that guides it is, well, timeless.

As the recent American Legion Post 256 guest speaker “TK” Kelly spoke of his work as Director of the Lockheed U-2 aircraft program. The U-2, nicknamed “Dragon Lady”, is an American single-jet engine high altitude reconnaissance aircraft operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) and previously flown by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). It provides day and night, high-altitude (70,000 feet), all-weather intelligence gathering. U-2s have taken part in post-Cold War conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and supported several multinational NATO operations. The U-2 has also been used for electronic sensor research, satellite calibration, scientific research, and communications purposes. It is one of a handful of aircraft types to have served the USAF for over 50 years. For additional information about the American Legion visit the Post 256 website: www.tellicolakepost256.org.

The ABCs of Invisalign

Your New Smile is Waiting!

D

The Clear Alternative to Braces

By Jonathan Bradshaw, DDS

eciding to transform your smile is a big step. That’s why I meet with patients on almost a daily basis in order to help them decide the best way to proceed. Up until recently, patients relied on the traditional metal braces that most of us are familiar with. Fortunately, today patients can now take advantage of a brand new technology from Invisalign. These clear aligners from Invisalign represent an all-new and exciting alternative to traditional metal braces. They are: » Virtually invisible » Easily removable for eating and drinking » Easily removable for brushing and flossing » Comfortable If you’re ready to see if Invisalign is right for you, just call our office to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation consultation. If you’re ready to get started, we will create your very own personalized treatment plan. Your treatment plan begins with a precise digital scan (no goopy putty required). Next, your digital scan is used to create your custom aligners. Your custom aligners are carefully designed to gently shift your teeth in stages to achieve your desired smile. Patients typically wear aligners for a minimum of 20 hours per day and replace aligners at two-week intervals during the treatment period. Because each of our teeth is surrounded by periodontal ligaments that permit controlled movement at the teeth, Invisalign aligners gently realign your teeth by shifting them to the new desired location. If you’re ready to discover that perfect smile, I encourage you to call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865-816-9211 to schedule your free consultation. Our compassionate and caring dental care professionals can help you achieve that healthy looking smile that you’ve been dreaming of. At Heritage Family Dentistry, we offer every member of your family a full range of dental services, including routine dental care, cosmetic dentistry, crowns and bridges, Invisalign orthodontics, digital radiography, gum treatment, implant dentistry, sedation dentistry, and more. The Best of Two Seasons F or those who are new to this gorgeous East Tennessee Valley, welcome to our distinct change of seasons, which may be part of why you’ve chosen to join us! You’ll hear a sound when you’re outside in the late evenings that’s very recognizable and familiar to those who were fortunate enough to be born here… the cicada, or the “Katy-dids” as we East Tennesseans prefer to call them! It’s a sound that, to us, signals the ending of summer and the transitioning into autumn or “Indian Summer.”

whichever color you choose there will be many color combinations for your skin tones and hair color. Browns are extremely striking on redheads, brunettes, and blondes when used with the right accent pieces; grey works well with any skin tone when the right color is paired with it, nearer the face. Blacks, as we all know, just work! If you don’t have at least one great pair of black pants as a staple in your wardrobe, let us help you select them. They are absolutely a must when you purchase for any season, and we have many great styles to choose from. Remember our complimentary alterations; a big plus, as many times a simple adjustment of the hemline makes a tremendous difference in the fit. Enjoy this time of year! There’s a calming and slowing down of all of nature, a beautiful season to behold, and a valley that’s about to be painted with the colors of fall both in nature and in your wardrobe.

Just as the seasons change wonderfully four times a year, so do our wardrobes, leaving us no time to become bored with the weather or our own closet. You’ll still want to enjoy many of your summer pieces as you begin the transition, and with The Lily Pad’s selections, you’ll find cottons and linens are the perfect wardrobe extenders. Many of the fabrications available today are seasonless, especially in our area. We have no need for wool sweaters and coats; only lightweight blends are important. Remember, last winter was extremely mild; not until after the holidays was there a need at all for a coat! The focus for fall will be strongly on a brown color palette; however, we’ll never be giving up black as THE staple in women’s apparel. Grey is coming on strong again also, so you know

Hyperlocal, Farm-to-Table Restaurant Opens in Loudon

R

esidents of Tellico Village, Rarity Bay, WindRiver, and surrounding areas can now enjoy a fresh, farm-to-table dining experience right in their own backyard. Wilder at Windy Hill Farm and Preserve opened in July and is located just off Highway 444 at Poplar Ridge Road. It features the inventive and internationally inspired creations of Chef Ben Warwick. Warwick has deep roots in the East Tennessee restaurant community having worked at local favorites such as Mango, The Orangery and Cherokee Country Club. The concept is a dream come to fruition for Warwick, who says he’s been preparing for this his entire career. “The chance to celebrate and share our region’s offerings through my cuisine is a privilege,” Warwick said. “I’m grateful to bring this to the Loudon community and to Windy Hill for giving me this opportunity.” Wilder serves as the on-property restaurant for Windy Hill, a new all-inclusive boutique resort that sits on 650 acres of family farmland owned by General Manager Steven Brewington and his family. “My grandfather originally purchased this farm in 2001 and had a passion for preserving it for future generations of farmers,” Brewington said. “I know he’d be proud of what we’ve created here and how it will now bring delicious meals to guests that include fresh ingredients hand selected from our own garden.” That garden, Brewington says, is only a short walk from Wilder offering the freshest, hyperlocal dining experience. “We take our inspiration from what we can grow right

here,” Warwick said. “Every day we can walk to the garden, see what’s available and offer that up to our guests. It doesn’t get much more farm-to-table than that.” To celebrate its opening, the resort is offering its Summer Concert Series, featuring nine top Americana artists from around the region performing live on select Saturday nights through October. General Admission tickets for the shows are available starting at $50 and include food from the restaurant’s outdoor kitchen. Guests can also purchase VIP dining packages for $150 to Wilder or reserve a weekend stay. Both include access to the concert. Friday nights at Wilder offer live music from local artists on the beautiful outdoor patio. The 46-seat restaurant sits on the lower level of the resort’s main lodge and includes a full bar and outdoor seating with commanding views of the mountains and the rolling pasture. Currently, Wilder is open for dinner Friday and Saturday evenings beginning at 5:45 and Sunday brunch at 9:00. Limited seating is available for each meal. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 865-657-1700. For more information on Wilder or the Summer Concert Series or to purchase tickets, visit www.windyhillfarmtn.com. Reclaim A Life Worth Hearing

By Connie Ferraro – Tellico Hearing Solutions

lthough years and years have passed, I remember the gathering as if it had taken place just yesterday. We were at an event, seated at a large table of ten. Robert was straining to keep up with the group’s discussion. He kept leaning over to me asking what the others had said. He also suggested that I was mumbling and he could not understand me. We had already discussed his difficulty following conversations with others, wondering if it was because of background distractions. Were people talking over each other, or just not speaking clearly? Were others toning down their voices so as not to disturb other people in the room? I shared my observations and concerns with Robert when we drove home that evening. He is very sociable and really enjoys any chance to converse with old and new friends alike. This and other instances, in addition to his need to turn up the volume on the radio while driving or our television at home to untenable levels, led me to conclude he was likely suffering from the early stages of hearing loss. Our conversation on our way home was positive. I credit Robert’s response in part to the research I had done online. I learned that how you broach this often-delicate subject with your spouse or loved one really made the difference. I learned the importance of being supportive, caring, and chief of all, loving. This was just another one of life’s many speed bumps we inevitably experience in life. With the right diagnosis and treatment, we were secure in the knowledge that Robert’s hearing loss could be overcome. I grew in patience, learning not to complain about the TV volume being too loud, or to be annoyed when he asked me to repeat what others had said. Our story had a happy conclusion. Robert pursued treatment, his hearing loss was confirmed, and he was prescribed and fitted with the appropriate hearing instruments. I wish you could have seen his smile when his hearing was reclaimed. Not only did our lives return to normalcy, but we also managed to avoid other possible problems that can come from untreated loss of hearing, such as speech impairment and imbalance. That wasn’t the end of the good news. Robert was so uplifted by his own experience that he went on to follow a career as a Hearing Instrument Specialist, assured that thanks to his own struggles with hearing loss, he would be able to

ROSSVILLE, Tenn. – Gardening throughout the different seasons is important for many home gardeners, and the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture is excited to provide information throughout the year to make gardening a success. The annual Fall Gardeners’ Festival, hosted at the Plateau AgResearch and Education Center in Crossville, Tennessee, is scheduled for August 30, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. CDT. This in-person event gives gardeners the opportunity to receive valuable information to help their gardens flourish. “We are extremely excited to once again host an in-person event,” says Walt Hitch, director of the Plateau AgResearch and Education Center. “The Fall Gardeners’ Festival is a favorite event for anyone interested in ornamental horticulture and the program is packed with excellent presenters.” The day-long event features a variety of presentations, educational workshops, exhibits, wagon tours, garden vendors and opportunities to Ask-the-Expert. One expert that attendees can speak with is Jeff Harvey, president of the American Conifer Society. The Fall Gardeners’ Festival is free to attend, and food is available for purchase. The Plateau AgResearch and Education Center is located at 320 Experiment Station Road in Crossville, and you can visit plateau.tennessee.edu to learn more about the center’s work and field day events. relate to and help others undergoing similar hearing difficulties in a way many other specialists simply cannot. Since that time, I have heard from the spouses of many of our clients, outlining experiences identical to ours. It’s hard! It’s challenging to repeat an entire interaction back to someone! But both Robert and I can look back on those times with a smile even as we fully enjoy socializing once again. If you think you or a loved one are experiencing an onset of hearing loss, I strongly encourage you to take action now. The sooner you act, the better the outcome. Why not let Robert’s story become the prologue to your own journey to Reclaim a Life worth Hearing? Always remember, Robert is not only a Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist. He is also a hearing instrument wearer. Tellico Hearing Solutions, PLLC 865-635-1887 contact@TellicoHearingSolutions.com www.tellicohearingsolutions.com

Boating Season Is in Full Swing? Are You?

August, 2022, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 5B

By Patrick Boring

o one needs to tell you boating season is in full swing. You are in the know, and your boat has likely already been in the water. But it only takes one trip out on the lake to experience once again the hours and hours of cleaning and detailing that go with it hand in hand. A second trip out on the lake just drives it home. By the time the weather is perfect for yet another outing, you might find it hard to motivate yourself. That is, unless there’s a near-magical way to keep your boat clean, maintained, and ready to go at the press of a button. Well, it turns out there is! Cutting down the back-breaking labor and maximizing your time in the water can be just at your fingertips- that is if you have a Touchless Boat Cover System from Lifetime Docks, LLC. Picture this: an effective garage for your boat that protects your craft like your home garage protects your car. It’s easy to maintain. Save hours of detailing each year, knowing the back of your boat will stay dry and

clean. Even if your boat does get wet, due to our vented Touchless Cover, it can actually dry out, removing mold and mildew from the equation in one swoop. With no effort on your part, your boat’s paint, decals, gelcoat, swim platform, and upholstery are protected from the sun’s unrelenting UV rays. And to promote security, once covered, your boat and everything in it is out of sight and difficult to access – that is, unless you have the remote. You invested in your boat. Now invest to secure its maximum use! It’s an investment you won’t regret, allowing you to take back hours and hours that would have otherwise been spent on maintenance, to instead spend them on what you would rather be doing—being out on

that water. Even better, you can choose from a variety of maintenance packages, from Basic - where Lifetime Docks LLC will lubricate the system’s 20 to 25 pulleys, and adjust components - all the way up to Lifetime which offers an even greater variety of helpful Maintenance Packages to adjust to your exact situation. Don’t waste another hour! Invest in your Touchless Boat Cover System. Call Patrick Boring at Lifetime Docks, LLC to reserve your system before the season draws to a close. Medal of Honor Celebration Rescheduled for Sept. 6-10, 2022

T

he Congressional Medal of Honor Society will hold its annual celebration for Recipients of the United States’ highest military award for valor in Knoxville, Sept. 6-10, 2022. The gathering of the nation’s 66 living Medal of Honor Recipients will mark the second time the annual event has been held in Knoxville—a two-time host city designation shared only with Boston. Knoxville last welcomed Recipients in 2014. The event was previously scheduled for Sept. 13-17. “The Medal of Honor Recipients love Knoxville and are looking forward to coming back in 2022,” said Joe Thompson, chairman of the board for the Medal of Honor Celebration. “We decided to change the date so the Patriot Award Gala could be held on Saturday night, as is traditional, without conflicting with a home football game.” The Knoxville Medal of Honor Celebration team traveled to Boston on 9/11 to accept the commemorative Congressional Medal of Honor Society flag and brought it back to Knoxville where it was raised at the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial at World’s Fair Park on Sept. 27, beginning a year-long series of events culminating in the 2022 Celebration. World War II veteran and Medal

of Honor Recipient Hershel W. “Woody” Williams, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.), attended the Flag Raising ceremony just days before his 98th birthday. Last July, Medal of Honor Recipient Kyle White, U.S. Army (Ret), was in town to speak to teachers and administrators throughout the state at the Medal of Honor Character Development Program (CDP) training day. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s CDP has successfully trained over 17,500 educators across the country to inspire students through the six core values of courage, sacrifice, commitment, integrity, citizenship, and patriotism embodied in the Medal of Honor. “Medal of Honor recipients, like Woody and Kyle, are living legends who continue to put country first as they share their unique and inspiring life experiences,” Thompson added. “Speaking on behalf of the Knoxville team, we’re delighted and deeply honored to be the host city for the Medal of Honor Celebration for the second time.” About the Congressional Medal of Honor Society The Congressional Medal of Honor Society, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Medal of Honor and its Recipients, inspiring

Americans, and supporting the Recipients as they connect with communities across the country. Chartered by Congress in 1958, its membership consists exclusively of those individuals who have received the Medal of Honor. There are 66 living Recipients. The Society carries out its mission through outreach, education, and preservation programs, including the Medal of Honor Museum, Congressional Medal of Honor Outreach Programs, the Congressional Medal of Honor Character Development Program, and the Congressional Medal of Honor Citizen Honors Awards for Valor and Service. The Society’s programs and operations are funded by donations. As part of Public Law 106-83, the Medal of the Honor Memorial Act, the Medal of Honor Museum, which is co-located with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s headquarters on board the U.S.S. Yorktown at Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, was designated as one of three national Medal of Honor sites. East Tennessee Wildlife Photographing the beauty of Tennessee, and the wildlife that call it home.

By Kalley Cook

Red Foxes - Loudon County

W

e have two kinds of foxes that call Tennessee home: the gray fox and red fox. I haven’t had the chance to photograph a gray fox - just waiting on the moment when it finally happens; they are so much more elusive than our reds. The gray fox prefers wooded areas and rarely ventures close to humans, whereas the red fox can thrive in urban areas. I often just photograph red foxes right from my car, and they don’t seem to pay attention to me as much this way. Red foxes will “move in” much closer to us humans while raising their young as this protects them from coyotes or other dangers in the woods; they will occupy your shed, under your porch, culverts, old groundhog dens, and several other spots. They are known to be nocturnal, and often scare people when they are seen out during the day. Many fear they might have rabies, but this is rarely the case. You can find red foxes year-round, but the best chance to see them is during the times when they are raising kits, with activity being best from late March through early July. During these months, mom fox (vixen) is in overtime trying to make sure all her kits are fed; her litters can range anywhere from 1-12 kits! After the kits reach a certain age, they tend to revert to their more nocturnal selves. It’s still not unusual to see them out during the day even during these months, just not as much. During August, the kits are more like teenagers and are still hanging around each other and learning how to survive in the wild. After one season ends, I am always looking forward to the next! Contact: Kalleybcook@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/kalleycookphotography https://kalleycook.smugmug.com

Kits Playing - Kits are so full of energy! If you ever get the chance to watch 10 kits running around like crazy, I can promise you, it’s a good time and I could watch it forever. However, this “play” is so important, as it teaches them how to survive in the wild. All kits have their own place in the litter; there will often be a runt and an alpha kit, and it doesn’t take me long to figure out which is which. The alpha tends to be the first to food and more aggressive. It’s all about survival of the fittest.

Red Fox Vixen Portrait - It was around dusk, and I had just landed on a new den with three kits peeping out of a culvert. I didn’t see mom yet, but when the sun was right about to set, she appeared. When red foxes are shedding their winter coat and raising young, they often can look a little pitiful. But when I got glimpse of this red fox vixen, I instantly knew she was the prettiest red fox I have ever seen. The golden sun was shining on her so pretty, and I left that night happy to have several photos of her. As you can see, she is absolutely stunning!

Though wildlife and nature photography hold her heart, you can contact Kalley for all of your photography needs, including sports, portraits, still life, food, real-estate, weddings, and photojournalism.

Kalley uses a Canon 7d markii, paired with a Canon 100-400mm lens for all of her photos.

Mudroom: Form and Function Work Together

M

Kisses For Mom - When mom returns from a hunt, the kits always greet her with so much excitement, and it makes me smile every time. They will jump all over her, and those tails will be wagging just like dogs do. This “kiss” you’re actually seeing is how the kit signals to mom it has a desire to be fed or just wants to play. However, I am certain that, from time to time, they have to be kisses; just like us humans, animals show affection, too. Even though these kits seem almost as big as mom is, she will still let them nurse a little.

udroom. While some hate the label “mudroom”, it’s a good description of how we often use the space. It can be a messy catchall for daily items like shoes, coats, bags, and dog leashes. However, the mudroom has evolved into a highly functional family center. Since it’s in a common entryway that visitors see, homeowners want the mudroom to match the style of the house while functioning as a control center. So, besides a place to sit as you put on your shoes, the mudroom can be designed to do so much more. Include Hooks and Cubbies Every member of the family needs their own coat hook and cubby space. Cubbies help everyone keep track of everyday items like a purse or cap. Kids are more likely to hang their backpack and jackets on a hook, keeping them organized and saving valuable time on school mornings. Add Cabinets A mudroom is part of your home, so dress up the look of the space by adding cabinet doors over the cubbies. Doors make a mudroom look more stylish rather than a catchall zone. And let’s be honest, a cabinet door hides any cluttered shelves. Put in a Hamper With a hamper clothes that are wet or muddy have a place to go. Otherwise, those clothes end up dropped on the floor or left in a kid’s backpack. Nobody wants to discover a smelly, wet t-shirt days later in a backpack! Create a Communications Station Since the mudroom sees daily traffic, make it a place for family communications. Include a chalk or corkboard for reminders such as grocery items or baseball practice. Now the refrigerator won’t be covered with notes, invitations and pictures. Also, include USB ports to create a place to recharge cell phones, tablets and other electronic equipment. Use the Garage If you don’t have the space for a mudroom inside your house, use the garage! Placed just outside the door, a garage mudroom serves the same purpose and keeps a lot of the dirt out of the house. Want to create a mudroom for your house? Tailored Living of Knoxville will work As whole home organization specialists, your local Tailored Living designer can help with you to design, select to enhance every area of your home with innovative storage and garage flooring solutions materials that coordinate with designed for the way you live. inding the right insurance for your home, your cars, your life, etc. can be a very daunting process. It seems like there are almost infinite options to think about. You want to make the right choices for yourself and your family, and it can really help to have a local company with people you can get to know and trust. In this month’s edition of Mountain Views, we had the opportunity to interview Josh Allen, the owner of Allen Insurance in Knoxville. Allen Insurance is a local business with great people who care about others. We are excited to present our interview with Josh to you. MV: Tell our readers a little bit about yourself and why you started Allen Insurance. Josh: I was raised here in East Tennessee and now live in Knoxville with my wife, son, dog, and cats. I am actively involved in our local church and love traveling, music, and sports. I decided to open my own agency in 2011 after working for another agency for 8 years. I love working with and helping people and thought that I could make more of a difference on my own. I like building relationships and getting to know the people I’m working with. I enjoy maintaining a level of trust and satisfaction that comes with consistent and friendly service. My motto is: I don’t work for the insurance companies; I work for you! I’ve also learned that by taking care of our clients they help take care of me by sending in referrals and spreading the word about our business. When you love what you do you never have to work a day in your life, and I definitely love serving all our customers’ needs and helping anyway I can. My wife, Justine, is my partner in our

company. She’s my rock and wears many hats in the business. She isn’t licensed to sell insurance, but she does all the little things that really make our business run as smoothly as possible. I’m truly blessed to have her in my life. MV: Can you help us get to know your team members? Josh: Absolutely. Stacey Jenkins has been with us for 7 years, is a good friend and has been a huge asset to our business. She did not have an insurance background when we hired her but had a long history of providing great customer service in all her previous jobs. We knew she would be a great fit because she loves helping people and building relationships just like I do. She is always super friendly and extremely knowledgeable about all the products we offer. William Davis has been with us for almost 3 years. He has previously worked in insurance as well as customer service. William is always quick to answer the phone and loves talking to people and helping them figure out the best policy for their needs at the lowest possible price. William has fit right in because he’s a people person who will always do whatever it takes to make sure your needs are taken care of. MV: Tell us about your business philosophy. Josh: At Allen Insurance our business philosophy is to be the best in service and quality. We want to do whatever it takes to give you the absolute best possible pol-

icy at the lowest possible price. We are here to give our customers peace of mind and help them financially. We think communication is very important. That’s why we don’t have an automated phone service. When you call us, a real live person picks up the phone and is ready to help you immediately. We also answer emails and messages as quickly as possible. We handle all servicing in house and will also help walk you through the claims process. We are here to serve you! MV: What general types of insurance do you offer and from which companies? Josh: We offer auto, home, business, and life insurance products. Basically, everything except health insurance. Our preferred company is Erie Insurance. We put most of our business with them because they offer extremely competitive pricing with supreme policy protection. Some of the other companies we offer are State Auto (a part of Liberty Mutual), Progressive, Foremost, and Bristol West. We also have some other companies for hard to place policies. MV: We heard that you have something called Equipment Breakdown Coverage available on homeowner’s policies. That seems like a big deal. Can you tell us about that? Josh: Erie offers equipment breakdown coverage on home insurance which is a really big deal! This works similar to a home warranty. For example, if your heating and air unit were to malfunction from wear and tear and you needed to get a new one, Erie would pay for you to get a brand new unit! We know things don’t last forever so this is really great for peace of mind! MV: Can you give us some examples of insurance products or options that custom-

William Davis

ers should look into further? Josh: Sure! Erie also offers guaranteed replacement cost on home insurance, which means they will rebuild your home no matter what the total cost. For example, I had 5 clients that lost their homes in the 2016 Gatlinburg fires. One of those customers’ homes was insured for $150,000 in coverage on the dwelling. However, because of supply issues and other factors it ended up costing $411,000 to rebuild the home and that’s what Erie paid! Erie also offers disappearing deductibles and accident forgiveness on auto insurance too! They really give you so much for such a great price. Erie’s motto is “Above All in Service” and everyone who has them raves about how great their service is. MV: Anything else you feel would be important to add or that you want readers to know? Josh: Taking care of someone when the worst happens is something we truly love doing. That’s when people really know you care. Auto and home insurance are our specialty. We also offer coverage for boats, motorcycles, motor homes, jet skis, and trailers. We offer business insurance whether it’s for a small or large business. In addition, we provide insurance for commercial auto and workers compensation. Lastly, we offer a wide range of life insurance products and long-term care options. I love working with and helping people. I like to think that I’m in the people business. If I take care of them, they will take care of me. It’s that simple. August In the Garden

B

by

Lisa Grugin

elieve it or not, fall is coming soon. As we get ready for the change in seasons, we also need to think about changes that may be happening in our lives and in our landscapes.

Change is the one inevitable aspect of life, other than death. That is also true of your yard. Young plants mature. Trees fall and trees grow. What was once sunny may now be shady and vice versa. Some plants thrive and others struggle. Neighbors arrive, and areas that were once wooded are cleared. Or maybe those neighbors put up a big fence or wall of trees, and your view is impacted. The situation could also be that you are the new neighbor who is struggling to learn how to garden in an unfamiliar environment where some of the plants you love don’t do well. It isn’t only the outside that changes. Sometimes our health or the health of a family member declines, and we are no longer able to do the gardening that we once did. Sometimes the one who did all the work in the yard is no longer there. On the other side of the coin, children may arrive or take up a sport and suddenly your free time is no longer free. All of this is a roundabout way of telling you to not be afraid to make the changes that you need to make. I want your yard to be a place where you can go to enjoy life, not something that you dread! If you hate maintaining big beds and can’t afford to hire someone else to do it, take them out and sow grass or spread mulch. If you have shrubs that require constant trimming or treating or babying, take them out and replace them. Embrace the change and move on! Now that I have that out of the way, let’s talk about some general plant stuff that needs to be done. Yes, I know it is hot with 100% humidity and the mosquitoes are as big as hummingbirds, but your plants need attention. ☼ Do your monthly checkup of your yard.

Walk on out there and look to see what is really going on. Plants that look good from your patio might not look so healthy up close! ☼ You may be getting plenty of rain at your house, but I have had to drag out the hose a few times at mine. If you don’t have a rain gauge, use sentinel plants like hydrangeas (that droop when they are thirsty) to tell you when things are dry. You know what I am going to say next: Sprinklers are good for grass and flowers but don’t do diddly for trees and shrubs. Yep, I’ll keep saying that until everyone in the area understands and I stop hearing “but I have a sprinkler” when you come in and want to know why your plants are dead. ☼ Check for disease on your plants and treat as needed. Powdery mildew, rust, black spot, and shothole disease are making an appearance, as well as the less treatable root diseases. Remember that good hygiene is a primary way of stopping the problem, so remove diseased areas if practical and pick up any leaves that fall to the ground. It is also best to water at soil level, not overhead. ☼ Check for bugs, but make sure the ones you have are bad guys before you start spraying. Overtreatment is causing two serious problems: The problem bugs are becoming resistant to the chemicals, and good guys like bees are getting wiped out. Always start with the least toxic products first, then progress if the problem continues. I will add, however, that some insects will require a systemic product unless you can catch them in the crawler stage. Crepe Myrtle Bark Scale is one of those. ☼ Did you plant vegetables? How did they do? If you didn’t enjoy the success you had hoped for, come in and talk to us and let’s

Sometimes the solution is very simple, like plant rotation or installing drip irrigation. ☼ Isn’t it amazing how fast the weeds can take over? Keep pulling them, and don’t forget to apply a pre-emergent. ☼ If there are areas of your yard that are struggling with no apparent reason, come in and talk to us. You might need to do a soil test to determine if you have a pH or nutrient deficiency. Our pH in the area tends to run neutral at 7 or so. Acid lovers like hollies, azaleas, rhododendrons, and roses will need to have that level brought

Sun-loving Lantana Can Be Hardy in Tennessee When Conditions Are Right

Submitted by James Newburn, Interim Director, UT Gardens, Knoxville

Vivid Lantana, like this yellow ‘Chapel Hill’ cultivar, thrive at the UT Gardens, Knoxville, and Jackson. In each location, some Lantana varieties have proven hardy, surviving winter temperatures to thrive again. That’s not the case at the cooler, and higher elevation UT Gardens, Crossville, where Lantana are true summer annuals. Photo courtesy of UTIA.

s a child, I was always fascinated with Lantana and its blooms. All those tiny individual florets forming one substantial flower cluster was a wonder to me. I used to pick the little flower heads apart and see how many single flowers I could get. The color of the flower head also captivated me. I remember how the separate flowers slowly faded or darkened to other shades as they aged. Then there were the bicolors that would have contrasting colors on the outer rings of the cluster (or umbel inflorescence as I learned later). These, too, transitioned as they aged. How cool was it that a flower could change colors! As an adult gardener, I became aware of just how valuable Lantana (Lantana camara) is in the landscape. It is drought tolerant once established, very heat resistant, and provides season-long color, even tolerating a light frost before succumbing to winter freezes. It is a semi-woody shrub that can get up to 2 to 4 feet tall and wide or larger, so one specimen can make a big splash in a garden bed. Newer varieties are more compact and are ideal for mixed containers or as a landscape border. Throughout Tennessee, we treat them as annual bedding plant for the most part. There are a few cultivars, however, that have been shown to be hardy in some parts of the state and will regrow each year. It all depends on how low the temperature gets in the winter. ‘Miss Huff’ is perhaps the most reliably hardy, widely available, and popular cultivar in Tennessee. Established plants can withstand 0° F. With showy pink, yellow and orange florets this selection is standout. Jason Reeves at UT Gardens, Jackson, related that he has plants there that have been coming back for 15 years now. It is a vigorous grower and his reaches in the 4-foot range though they can get taller. Another Lantana that has shown to be hardy in many areas of Tennessee is ‘Ham and Eggs’. This variety has a rather richer, deeper bicolor inflorescence pattern with the outside flowers shaded a bright, deep pink (ham) and the inside flowers being yellow (eggs). It also can grow to be rather large, and Jason indicates it has been hardy in Jackson. ‘Chapel Hill Yellow’ has proved hardy for us in Knoxville and has come back for about four years. Somewhat smaller than ‘Miss Huff’ or ‘Ham and Eggs’, it usually tops out about 18 to 24 inches. It has a spreading habit that makes it ideal for the front or mid-border. Its solid yellow color brightens up any full-sun location where all Lantanas thrive. When we are dealing with “hardy” or “perennial” Lantana those terms can be relative in Tennessee as we are in a transition zone of their hardiness range. Depending on your particular micro-climate, one cultivar may be hardy for you but not your neighbor. Shalena Durkot at the UT Gardens, Crossville, has said she has had no luck with any of them, however, Jason and I have had success in Jackson and Knoxville. My advice is to try any of these varieties and see how you fare. Lantanas are beautiful, low maintenance, pollinator-attractors whether they last one season or many. A variety of Lantana can be found at the UT Gardens, Jackson, and Knoxville. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public.

Loudon County Habitat For Humanity

L

oudon County Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, Christian housing ministry that works to eliminate poverty housing in Loudon County. We welcome individuals from any faith — or from no faith — who are willing to pick up a hammer to help improve the lives of families needing decent shelter. Habitat for Humanity International was started in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller in South Georgia. In 1984 former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, became Habitat’s most famous volunteers. Every year since then, they have given one week of their time to help build houses during the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Since its creation, Habitat has built more than 300,000 houses in the United States and around the world. Loudon County Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1992, but it was when a tornado hit Lenoir City in 1993 that the affiliate actually started constructing homes. That first year, the community came together with God’s help and found the resources to build homes for three families. By the end of 2020, Loudon County Habitat had completed 120 homes and made needed repairs to more than almost 100 homes owned by seniors or individuals with disabilities. In 1995, the Habitat Home Store opened in Lenoir City accepting donated goods to sell at a reasonable price to raise funds for the construction of homes. The Home Store, renamed the ReStore in 2018 and located at 303 Simpson Road in Lenoir City, raises enough each year to build at least two houses. Although raising funds for home building is its primary goal, the store also provides a source of reasonably priced goods for the community. HOW CAN YOU HELP? » Volunteer - anyone willing to pick up a hammer is welcome! » Donate – go to our website at LoudonCountyHabitat.org to donate online or donate goods at our store. » Shop – patronize Habitat Restore – get a good deal for yourself while helping us to reach our goal of eliminating poverty housing in Loudon County. Red Fox Sweetness - I have always loved the sweet look on this kit’s face, and I could just pick it up and hug it but we all know that’s not a good idea. I believe this little baby was actually just really exhausted after playing with its siblings all morning long and ready for a good nap. They don’t pause and sit still for too long before they are right back up being their rambunctious selves. At this young age, everything is so new to them, and they are always so curious about everything around them, and that includes me sometimes!

Red Fox Siblings - The red fox kit on the left creeped up behind its sibling, and I was waiting for a big pounce, but instead decided a lick on the nose would do. I always love watching animals show affection to one another, and interactions like these are just not something most people get to see. We don’t think about the love they really share for one another, and it melts my heart every time seeing it; not just foxes, but from all animals I have had the privilege to photograph.

ust Being a Mom - When mom returns from a hunt, she typically starts grooming her kits right away. She will go from kit to kit, getting them de-ticked and as clean as possible. She nibbles along their heads, body and especially in the ears. Of course, the kits have so much to do and often get irritated after she does it for too long. I feel like you can see the irritation in this young kit’s eyes, like “Mom, you really have to do this now?” You can also notice she is still keeping a close eye on her other four kits.

The Reality is: Most People’s Golden Years Aren’t Really that Golden!!

City of Vonore Prepares for Dedication of New Veterans Memorial Park

Ke e n e r H o m e s, I n c. “Trust is the foundation your home is built on.” Ke e n e r H o m e s, I n c.

“M

“Trust is the foundation your home is built on.”

oving to Tellico Village has been one of the best decisions we’ve made, and choosing Keener Homes to build our dream retirement home was also a great decision. We had built five homes previously, so we knew what was important in selecting a builder, particularly since we would be building long distance. Once we purchased our lot in 2013, we traveled to Tellico several times for several years to meet and interview builders. Fortunately, we met Kit during one of our first trips, and we found ourselves comparing each of the other six builders to Keener Homes. During those trips, we were able to walk through a number of Kit’s homes in various stages of construction both in Tellico Village and in Rarity Bay. The quality and attention to detail was evident in all his homes, regardless if the home was in the $200,000 range or in the million dollar range. During one trip, we attended an open house for a new builder and met a couple who volunteered that they had built with Kit Keener and invited us to see their home. Listening to an unsolicited description of their positive building experience with Kit spoke volumes to us. After seeing his homes, comparing him with other builders, and speaking with his clients, we knew selecting Kit was the right decision.

We frequently say we love Kit Keener and the Keener Home team, and recently, someone asked us why we think so highly of them. There is not one reason, but many reasons. Kit Keener and the Keener Homes team have met and exceeded every expectation, and we had none of the pain points we have experienced with prior builds. They are very organized, which was especially important in making the best use of our time when we traveled here for inspections and/or product selections. Kit spent a lot of time with us learning what was important to us and making suggestions that improved our ideas. Kit and Krisha communicated on a regular basis, so we knew what was happening and when. When something was in question, Kit asked our opinion rather than just proceeding. He was gracious in making changes during the building process when we had a request. His tradespeople are highly skilled and do exceptional work, and his vendors have good selections available. He delivered everything he said he would and more. He and Krisha have been equally helpful even after we closed, and they have been very quick to address any punch-list issues. We would readily choose Kit if we were to build again. So you see why we always say, ‘We love our builder, Keener Homes.’” – Joe & Freddie Jacob

Pardon the Progress

T

here is an old saying from here in East Tennessee that has always sort of stuck with me. ‘Every barn looks better with a new coat of paint”. Well, here at The Village Salon, we are positioned for a bit of a face lift beginning in August. Doing a renovation at a high volume small business is not quite like remodeling Brian K. Whitehead Managing Partner a home. Time is a very perishable asset, The Village Salon and a strict time table must be adhered to if the project is going to be successful. The commercial crew from Factory Carpet led by Miss Amanda Dagnan will be taking care of the job from start to finish. Our new project is set to begin on Friday, August 19 and we plan to reopen and be fully functional on Tuesday, August 23. With a little luck, our guests will only be inconvenienced by the couple of days our salon will be closed. In addition to our internal improvements, there is rumor of an exterior renovation of the Village Square. There are currently discussions that involve the store fronts themselves as well as the parking lot. That progress could also present some challenges to our guests, but the finished results will surely be worth any minor inconveniences. As we celebrate our growing pains, please Pardon our Progress and our Team here at The Village Salon will be excited for everyone to see our new ‘face lift’.

GARAGE FLOOR COATINGS

They’re Not Created Equal

D

o you cringe at the sight of your pitted and stained garage floor? Has it become unsafe with crumbling concrete, cracks or slick spots caused by years of leaked oil? The garage is the first part of your house you see when arriving home and is often the largest room in the house. So, to make the garage a safe extension of the home’s living space, homeowners are investing in concrete coatings for the garage. “There are options for garage flooring, but all are definitely not created equal,” explained Brian Falls, a co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville, the area’s most experienced garage flooring company. “The decision usually comes down to a choice between an epoxy or polyuera system. A polyurea flooring system, however, presents the most advanced and durable coating in concrete flooring technology. It’s truly quality you can stand on.” Additional benefits of using a polyuera system for your garage floor include: Surface that Withstands Practically Everything From extreme pressure, heavy impacts, and spills, polyuera is strong and durable. It provides better protection than epoxy against chemicals commonly found in garages, like gasoline, auto fluids and paint thinner. Its chemistry makes it more flexible and up to 20 times stronger than epoxy flooring. It is also UV resistant and contains no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Most importantly, unlike epoxy, it can withstand extremely high temperatures, making it resistant to hot tires lifting and peeling the coating. Makes Your Garage a Safer Place Used in combination with full coverage of polymer paint flakes adds safety to your space. The combination creates a slip-resistant surface, reducing the chances of accidents when the floor is wet. The coating is also antibacterial, stain-resistant, and nontoxic. Fast Curing and Long-Lasting This kind of garage floor coating takes only a few hours to harden and one day to be ready for use. Standard epoxy coating systems take three to five days to harden completely. PremierGarage’s polyuera floor coating, which retains it color and finish integrity, has a 10-year warranty. Easy Maintenance Spills clean up easily with a paper towel, but an occasional cleaning with just water and a small amount of Serving the Knoxville area for more than 15 years, PremierGarage’s durable garage vinegar will keep the floor looking brand new. flooring, custom cabinets and organizational systems transform cluttered Bottom line, a polyurea garage floor is definitely worth garages into clean, efficient spaces.
