Start Your Cruise Vacation with Some Home Port Adventure Make Florida’s Space Coast Your Home Port

I

Article courtesy of BPT

t’s said life is a journey, not a destination. That should especially be true when you and your family are planning your next cruise vacation. Often overlooked as a key part of that journey is the original port you’ll be

sailing from – the real beginning of your adventure. When planning a family cruise, remember that the home port area can be a fun getaway unto itself. Consider starting your vacation a little earlier and arriving at the port a day or two before your cruise so you can explore everything the vicinity has to offer. Since you’ll already be near your ship’s departure site, you’ll also feel less rushed and ready for recreation.

Favorite port of call

Port Canaveral on Florida’s Space Coast has been voted “Best North American Home Port” by Cruise Critic, and for good reason. Many of the top cruise lines call Port Canaveral home, and four million

passengers a year sail out to sea from that sunny location. The surrounding area offers tons of activities for all ages, making Port Canaveral the perfect one-stop spot for kicking off your cruise vacation. From its laid-back, beachy atmosphere to the thrills of its indoor and outdoor recreational offerings and its proximity to U.S. space program facilities, Port Canaveral truly has something for every member of the family. Here are just a few of the elements that make it everyone’s favorite port of call.

Sun, sand, and surf

With more than 72 miles of coastline, Florida’s Space Coast has beaches galore. Let the kids build sandcastles and

hunt for seashells while you soak up the sun at any of the dozen-plus beaches near Port Canaveral. You can find secluded beaches at Canaveral National Seashore or enjoy a recreational beach such as Sebastian Inlet State Park, which is popular for fishing, surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and more. Feeling adventurous? Get your gear at Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach and take a surf lesson or try your hand at standup paddleboarding or kayaking. You also can rent a boat and take advantage of the excellent saltwater and freshwater fishing the area is known for. continued on page 2A ...

The final frontier

For the space geeks and sci-fi aficionados in the family, a visit to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is a must. Learn all about space exploration from the myriad exhibits, then take the “Behind the Gates” bus tour to see the launch sites. You can even eyeball the historic Space Shuttle Atlantis and dine with an actual astronaut. There are opportunities to attend a rocket launch at the space center for an additional cost, or you can check out the latest rocket launch schedule and catch a liftoff from a greater distance at a nearby beach or park.

Fun for the grownups

Don’t worry, we didn’t forget about the adults. Port Canaveral and Florida’s Space Coast boast excellent shopping, relaxing spas, spirited nightlife, top-notch golfing, and some of the best seafood dining anywhere. So when you’re thinking about cruising with the family, factor in the where and when of your home port embarkation. You can make the most out of your trip to Port Canaveral by visiting www.VisitSpaceCoast.com.

thens Community Theatre (ACT) announces the November production, A Christmas Carol, adapted from the Charles Dickens novel by Autumn Lowry Carusillo and J. Brad McKenzie. The opening night performance on November 15 is dinner theatre, and other performances are November 16 & 17 and November 23 & 24. British novelist and story-teller extraordinaire Charles Dickens (played by Alex Dufty) invites us to join the journey of Ebenezer Scrooge one Christmas Eve night. Scrooge (played by Gary Bowman) is known around town to be hardened, mean-spirited man with distinct disdain for charitable hearts, the afflicted, the infirm, the poor, and the Christmas season. He spends most of his time working in his counting house and declines any invitations extended to him to partake in any human connection. However, Scrooge’s bleak outlook and hardened heart are challenged when he is visited on the eve of Christmas by the ghost of his former partner, as well as the ghosts of Christmas Past (Cynthia Webb McCowan), Present (Dann Black), and Christmas Yet to Come (Dave Siklosi). While journeying through the seasons of his life with each ghost, Scrooge learns about the true meaning of Christmas and the power of the human relationship. The cast includes veteran ACT performers and newcomers, including Annette Dufty, Bailey Dufty, Barbara Morgan, Brad Jewell, Brittany Grant, Brittany Wolfe, Cameron Cleveland, Casey Jones, Cooper Jones, Emerson McKenzie, Emma Stratton, Emma Trew, Grace QueenHuston, Hunter Bales, Isaac Griffin, Jacob Brown, Jason Carusillo, Jay Dimsdale, Jessie Butler, Kaliyah Williams, Lauren Trew, Madison Watts, Mia Matias, Rick Parker, Ruby Morgan, Scott Trew, Sophia Chamberlain, Sumer Jaibat, Taylor Johnson, Tyler Jacobs, and Yura Shkola. A Christmas Carol is directed by ACT veteran, Autumn Lowry Carusillo, with J. Brad McKenzie assisting. Larae Graves is stage manager. November Highlights

M

From the Publisher

y favorite time of the year is fall and especially now that we are going into the height of the holiday season. From November until the beginning of January, a great deal of activity takes place. There are holiday get-togethers with friends, family, and business associates, city events that enhance the holiday season and add to the enjoyment, city and residential decorations viewed over the Greater Knoxville area, and retailers with holiday displays of unique gifts that are sure to please someone special on you list. What a wonderful time of the year! In this edition of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we have begun to celebrate the holiday season by highlighting businesses and entrepreneurs that offer a variety of products and services that can be considered as gift choices for you or someone special. Take time to view all that is offered and consider visiting our highlighted businesses. Many of you have family and friends that are in service to our country or who gave their lives in service. This month, on Veterans Day and on Thanksgiving Day, remember their service and give thanks for that service which safeguards our country, our hometowns, and our freedoms. As we approach Thanksgiving, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of you, our readers and advertisers, who have supported us and our publication. We consider ourselves truly blessed to have this venue to highlight the small business community. And we encourage you, our readers, to in turn support these entrepreneurs who are so vital to a vibrant, growing economy. On behalf of everyone at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, I would like to wish you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving and an enjoyable holiday season!

Challenge Golf Association Having Positive Impact

A

By Rob Preston

new ministry is attempting to spread the gospel to golfers, especially to golfers facing crisis situations in their lives. Ron Potter, a Cleveland resident and founder of the Challenge Golf Association, recently met with me and joined the Athens Chamber of Commerce. Potter said the association is a proven service provider and uses the game of golf as a catalyst for relational evangelism. Challenge Golf works with like-minded churches across the nation to sponsor free golf tournaments for avid pursuers of the sport. Church members serve as caddies in trying to introduce participants to the words of the Scripture. Potter said several members of PGA’s Champion Tour (seniors) have embraced this ministry, including Tom Lehman, Bernard Langer, and Loren Roberts. “I strongly support Challenge Golf,” said Lehman in the association’s brochure. “Like God’s grace, I think the CGA ministry is going to be a life-changing experience for many.” Potter said the ministry is attempting to share the

gospel with one million golfers. “The core values are to be Christ-following, passionate, dedicated, and servant-minded,”

said Potter. He said the growth potential is virtually unlimited, with more than 200,000 evangelical ministry partners. The association’s brochure emphasizes the organization’s values, including the power of the gospel to change lives and the ministry’s partners. According to statistics, Potter stated that in a typical golf tournament of 100 players, 45 may be alienated from their children, 37 suffer from alcohol or substance abuse, 35 may be addicted to pornography, 27 could be devastated by a failed marriage, 23 may be considering bankruptcy, and two could be contemplating suicide. “God shows up in big way when we hold these tournaments,” said Potter. For more information about Challenge Golf, contact Potter online by visiting www.challengegolf.org.

Ask Yourself This One Question ... What’s the difference between a buyer’s agent and a seller’s agent? Today’s Tellico Village and surrounding real estate marketplaces are red hot, and most agents have multiple buyers searching for homes. So how can you as a seller take full advantage of this unique opportunity? A buyer’s agent will often tell you that they have multiple buyers who want to buy homes and that is why you should list with them. Simply put, these agents are agents for their buyers. What you need is a seller’s agent. Someone who works for you and looks out for your best interest. I started in 1986 as a seller’s agent working for Cooper Communities and later in 1989 when I started Village Realty. If you have a home to sell, I invite you call me. I will help you price it and market it. Buyer’s agents will try to get you to list at a low price so they can make a quick sale. In today’s market, you should get a price higher than just a few months ago due to the current short supply of inventory. List with me and I will work hard and use my over three decades of experience to get you top dollar for your home and not just a quick sale. Why Veterans Make Good Entrepreneurs

A (L to R) Derren Burrell of Veteran Ventures Capital receives an American Legion Certificate of Appreciation from Robert Haldi, Post 256 Commander. Photo by James Patterson.

By James Patterson

merican Legion Post 256 recently received a briefing from Derren Burrell, founder and president of Veteran Ventures Capital (VVC) located in Knoxville. Prior to his retirement from the Air Force, Mr. Burrell was the Resource Director of the White House Communication Agency. About his business, he said it was much like what you see on the TV program Shark Tank. VVC does a similar approach to helping invest in veterans.

“Our goal is to help ‘vetrepreneurs’ turn their ideas and visions into successful companies,” said Mr. Burrell. “Military veterans have the work ethic, integrity, and passion to take any business to the next level.” Specifically, Veteran Ventures Capital looks for veteran-owned small and medium business to ensure the veteran leader has the tools – money, skills, and resources – to take their business to the next level. To learn more about VVC, visit www.veteranventures. us. To learn more about the American Legion Post 256, visit www.TellicoLakePost256.org.

and create memories sure to last a lifetime. Debuting on November 1, Christmas at the Smoky Mountain Opry combines every special element of the holiday season that makes it the most wonderful time of the year. Visitors to Christmas at the Smoky Mountain Opry experience holiday music from talented singers, dazzling dancing, seemingly magical special effects on lavish sets, comedy, and so much more through the talents of an incredible cast and band. The child in everyone will be caught up in wonder when life-size toys and sugarplum fairies come to life and angels and aerialists soar high in the sky. Santa Claus brings his elves and enchanted reindeer together to create a world for the young and young at heart. Laughter and fun result from the holiday antics of Slim Chance, and the Christmas comedy includes reindeer games and juggling that “lights up” the stage and everyone’s heart. This multi-million dollar production features singers and dancers sharing music from traditional Christmas hymns to holiday favorites set in a

winter wonderland complete with falling snow throughout the theater! A celebration of the true meaning of the season – the birth of Christ – is told through inspiring music and a live nativity. “The holidays are everyone’s favorite time of the year, and we combine the traditions and special experiences that are only found at Christmastime with the excitement of high-energy singing and dancing, lighting and special visual effects, lavish costumes, and a talented cast of musicians,” said Michael Headla, Smoky Mountain Opry General Manager. “We can’t wait for our visitors to the Opry to experience this special show and create memories they will cherish as favorite memories for years to come.” With the variety of yuletide stories and songs, it is no surprise why Christmas at the Smoky Mountain Opry will create an experience that will keep the holidays alive in every heart all year long. ith the holiday season rapidly approaching, visits to your salon often can become a challenge with our very busy schedules. Sometimes securing an appointment with your favorite stylist can seem impossible, but please don’t take no for an answer. Very few words in the English language can generate

negativity like the work “no.” Many salons discourage the use of the word no, and as a guest of a salon, you should never accept “no” as an answer to your request for an appointment. Now, let’s not suggest that every request for an appointment be met with compliance, as those expectations would be totally unreasonable. Instead of taking “no” for

ast winter the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center unveiled their newest holiday tradition with the Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit, and since that time, the members of the Maryville Model Railroad Club have been painstakingly busy in their workshops adding intricate details and design elements to the displays. “We have added so many great new things to discover and cannot wait for folks to see all that we have created!” said Allan Gartner, Club President. “Everyone, including our spouses, have been getting into the work.” “Getting to see the reactions on the children’s and parents’ faces last year made the all the work and planning well worth it,” said Logan Hull, Director of Special Events at the Heritage Center. “It was very special to see that response to all of our hard work! I loved seeing the curiosity that the young, and young at heart, showed last year, and we are excited to be partnering the Maryville Model Railroad Club again this year!” The members of the Maryville Model Railroad Club have volunteered hundreds of hours to create and operate these model trains for the enjoyment of all who see come and visit. the buildings having more than 1,600 pieces, but the members would not have it any other way. Several new additions for the 2019-2020 season have taken months to create, including the Little River Sawmill, which will be completed right before the exhibit opens to the public on Friday, November 8th. “Bringing the unique history of this region to a new audience is really what we had in mind when we started the planning of this new exhibit,” said Hull. “The importance of the railroad in this area is so vital to the telling of the history of Townsend and the creation of the National Park. We hope to inspire a new generation of creators, artists, historians, and train enthusiasts.” New for 2019 is the Smoky Junction Train Discovery Zone for kids. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is offering the chance to be creative and enjoy family time with your kids in our brand-new, hands-on Train Discovery Zone. Complete with multiple building tables, lots of track, trains, and wooden building logs to create your very own miniature village, everyone in your family will be sure to bring out the curiosity and creativity in all generations. The Smoky Junction Train Discovery Zone is sponsored by Blount Partnership. “As a teaching museum, letting kids be kids and being hands-on is very important, and by offering the Train Discovery Zone, we hope that we can foster the love of trains and give families a place to play together and spend quality time with each other, especially during the holidays!” said Hull. The Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit and the kids’ Train Discovery Zone will be chugging along on Fridays, Saturday, and Sundays from November 8 through January 5. Admission to the exhibit is included in museum admission ($8 adults, $6 seniors and children ages 6-18). It can also be purchased separately for only $4 for ages 6 and up. The experience is free to the members of the Heritage Center. Each day that the trains are running a knowledgeable member of the MMRC will be on-site to answer questions and to show how they operate the trains. Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit is made possible by the generous support of our sponsors: Blount Partnership, East Tennessee Foundation, Richardson Construction, and Mr. and Mrs. Herb Handly. A Collective Thank You to Volunteers, Donors, and the Community

n Friday, September 26, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity volunteers, staff, and partner families picked up large donations and unloaded cars in preparation for the Annual Garage Sale and Boutique at the Community Church at Tellico Village while Community Church Crafters and volunteers sorted and priced the merchandise. Both groups partner each year for the sale, which features donated items ranging from furniture and home goods to lawn equipment, appliances, and clothing. At 8 am on Saturday, the doors opened to the awaiting crowd of shoppers. Kathy Blevins and Charlene Barton were co-chairs of the event again this year. “This is truly a community event,” said Blevins, just before the doors opened. “We are able to bring the whole community together, as well as serve Habitat, the Community Church Crafters, and local charities. And we couldn’t make it happen without all of our volunteers.” “This is a tremendous opportunity for the mission of Habitat by both financial support and community awareness of our services” said Tony Gibbons, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director. Gibbons said Sammie Shanks, Habitat volunteer coordinator, along with Crafters Blevins and Barton, helped organize the event. “We have a long history with the Community Church at Tellico Village and the Tellico Village community,” said Gibbons. “We want to thank the Community Church, the Crafters, the volunteers, the donors, and all the shoppers. All of you are helping address the need for affordable housing right here in Loudon County.” “The sale would not be possible without the Herculean efforts of many, many dedicated volunteers that over the course of three days set up, sell merchandise and, like magic after the Saturday morning sale, quickly disassemble everything and put the church back in order for Sunday morning services,” said Shanks. Her final comments noted that because of the efforts of many, we had record sales, which translates to more families in our community who will receive assistance. Mark your calendar for next year’s event on Saturday, October 17, 2020. Loudon County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a worldwide Christian housing organization. All funds to build in Loudon County are raised locally to provide safe, affordable houses for low-income families who are willing to partner with Habitat. These partner families help build their houses and then buy them from Habitat through an affordable mortgage. Funds from these mortgages go into a Fund for Humanity, which allows Habitat to build other houses.

A Brown Bag Lecture and Book Signing with J. Ross Greene

or years, I longed to know my father’s story and be close to him in some way. A Fortress and a Legacy has given my family a vibrant picture of my father – my hero – for generations to come.” – Rosalind Perrin Davis, daughter of Ross W. Perrin, Jr. In a Brown Bag Lecture on Thursday, November 7, J. Ross Greene will discuss his new book, A Fortress and a Legacy: The Gift of a WWII Bombardier’s True Story to the Daughter He Never Knew. At the heart and soul of the story is a collection of more than 1,000 letters exchanged between Knoxville native and B-17 bombardier Lt. Ross W. “Bud” Perrin and his bride, Thelma, who was both Miss Knoxville and a 1940 Miss America contestant. The author recalls childhood memories of his uncle and namesake. Six-plus years of extensive research, including retracing his uncle’s footsteps through Europe and interviewing more than 200 WWII veterans, has resulted in a captivating book and oral presentation that have stirred the imagination and emotions of thousands of people across the U.S. and Europe. Greene runs a financial consulting firm in Atlanta, Georgia, and is the nephew of “Bud” Perrin. A book signing will follow the lecture. The lecture is presented by the East Tennessee Historical

Society. The lecture and book signing are free and open to the public and will begin at noon on Thursday, November 7, at the East Tennessee History Center, located at 601 S. Gay Street in Knoxville. Guests are invited to bring

a “brown bag” lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks are available. For more information on the lecture, exhibitions, or museum hours, call 865-215-8824 or visit www.EastTNHistory.org.

efforts. Sixty-seven of these cats have already been neutered, ear tipped, and vaccinated thanks to grants received by the PPAW Spay Neuter Clinic in Greenback. A few have been adopted out as farm/working cats, and a few social ones have been taken to the shelter and have been adopted. A few local community residents have stepped up to make sure that these cats are fed EVERY day! But we need money to buy the food! It would be inhumane to abandon them. The number of cats in the area is unknown. Local residents, horse boarders at the school, and one of the security guards have stepped up and volunteered to make sure that these cats are fed EVERY day! We are asking for donations for food. It costs about $50 per week to feed all of the cats once per day. A Go Fund Me campaign has been established to help provide food at www.gofundme.com/f/ hiwassee-collegethe-cats-they-left-behind. There are many unknowns regarding the sale of the property, and we need to be prepared for changes. The

need for money and volunteers to take care of these cats is not going away. If you would rather donate food than cash, ORNL Federal Credit Union in Madisonville has volunteered to accept cat food donations for the Hiwassee College Cats. We are currently feeding 9-Lives Dry food and Friskies canned food (needed in the winter months coming up) and would like to try to feed them the same thing every day. Thank you in advance for your donations! If you think you might be able to help with donations for food, please donate at www.gofundme.com/f/hiwasseecollegethe-cats-they-left-behind. If you would like to volunteer as a caregiver (feeding – under 30 minutes) or in planning and implementation, please contact Judy via mail at 1catnut@gmail.com.

ot only students and faculty were affected by the sudden closing of Hiwassee College. You may not be aware of the feral/community cat colony that has been supported by students, horse boarders, and some staff and faculty at the college. Feral cat colonies consist of homeless felines who are not adoptable as pets due to their unsocialized history. The goal is to feed, trap, spay and neuter, and return these cats to their colony so they are not reproducing and creating a larger colony. If cared for, they will live healthy, productive lives, and the colonies will eventually die off as the cats age. They are very effective, non-poisonous rodent control for the entire campus… especially now that most of the buildings are closed or abandoned. One student and helpers had been handling the TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) until they left when the semester ended. They have since moved on to other schools. It’s a top-driven season again… choose this piece first, then decide which of the many bottoms are most appropriate for that style. Leggings and straight leg pants are best worn with longer tunic style tops or a short dress that can add an edgy look… making sure, of course, that the derriere is not exposed. If you still aren’t quite sure, there’s simply a straight leg style that lends itself beautifully to most any style blouse or jacket. Slacks run the gamut this year. From pencil to flare, it’s entirely your choice! Top them off with velvet or a little bit of shimmering metallic… gold, silver, bronze, or champagne for a very updated and perfect holiday look. Red is one of this season’s strongest color, and there’s a perfect shade for every skin tone. Any piece of an outfit in red

Brenda Bryan Owner, The Lily Pad is perfect for the holidays. Mabry-Hazen House Opens After-Hours for Night at the Museum

M

abry-Hazen House is hosting its quarterly Night at the Museum on Wednesday, November 13, from 6 to 9 pm. During the work week, museums (including Mabry-Hazen House) mostly keep bankers’ hours, and weekends are often packed with other activities, making it difficult for people who hold day jobs but would like to visit. Night at the Museum is a chance to visit Mabry-Hazen House after-hours on a weekday and drink up a little history. Explore the 1858 historic house in an entirely different light as twilight falls upon Mabry’s Hill, watch the sun set behind Sharp’s Ridge and North Knoxville flicker alight, all while enjoying drinks provided by a local brewery. This “historical happy hour” is not just about the festivity either; it’s about connecting with history and gathering at the museum to meet staff, volunteers, and local community members while talking about the past in a casual atmosphere. The historic home will be open for self-guided tours, and there will be behind-the-scenes access to the walkout basement at 7:30 pm. Mabry-Hazen

House also will continue its history series where we share an artifact or objects that normally are not on display. Historic photographs from our collection will be shared. Tickets are $10 per adult, and visitors under 16 are free. Each purchased ticket includes two adult beverages, and additional drinks are $5. We’ll have a fire pit, croquet, and corn hole available outside, and guests are encouraged to bring their games, stories, and camp chairs. Light refreshments will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit Mabry-Hazen House. Preceding Night at the Museum at 5:30 pm, MabryHazen House will hold its annual Meeting of the Membership. During the meeting, we will elect board members and the foundation’s executive officers. Members receive $5 off tickets to Night at the Museum. Not a member? Visit www.mabryhazen.com/donations and learn how you can join and support our mission while receiving great benefits to better experience Mabry-Hazen House!

Event will occur rain or shine. Tickets will be available at the door or at www.mabryhazen.com/natm. For more information, visit www.mabryhazen.com. The Mabry-Hazen House Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located atop Mabry’s Hill in Knoxville. Built in 1858, three generations of the same family resided in the Italianate-style home overlooking downtown Knoxville, Tennessee River, and Great Smoky Mountains. The museum showcases one of the largest original family collections in America with more than 2,000 original artifacts on display. Furnished and decorated in the style of several decades, MabryHazen gives a rare view into 130 years of Knoxville history. Learn about the origins of Knoxville’s iconic Market Square, the bitter divisions of the Civil War, the infamous 1882 Gunfight on Gay Street, a mountain city in the New South, the scandalous 1934 breach of promise and seduction trial, and much more through the rich, colorful lives of the Mabry and Hazen families.

arry is a medium size brown/white beagle mix who is about four years old and weighs 30 pounds. Harry is a happy fellow who loves to walk and gets along with other dogs. He was picked up as a stray in Sweetwater in Harry mid-September but has not been claimed by anyone. Harry would love to have a family and yard to call his own. If you are looking for a dog with a big smile, please come meet him. Bendi is a beautiful brindle colored healthy boxer who is about six years old and weighs 38 pounds. He is a personable gentleman who walks nicely on a leash, smiles, and does a “high five” when asked. Bendi is crate-trained and gets along well with other dogs. He would do well in a home with older children and a fenced-in yard. Bendi recently lost two of his best friends at the shelter (both were adopted) and is patiently waiting his turn to say goodbye to us. Bean is a two-and-a-half year old brown tabby with spectacular green eyes and a little stub tail. He was returned to the shelter through no fault of his own – his family is moving. Someone is going to get very lucky when they adopt this lovable lap cat! He’s friendly, well behaved, and very affectionate. Bonfire is a white tabby with gray and brown markings and is about five months old. She is a very sweet, laid back girl who is friendly and loves to play. She is curious and very lady-like. Bonfire is going to be a great companion to her new family when she’s adopted. Luna is a 10-month-old medium-long hair gray/silver tabby with adorable pink toe beans. It appears that her prior owner did not spend much quality time with her, so she is a bit unsure of humans at first. She will need someone who will work with her a bit to allow her to trust people. Once bonded to her new person, Luna will remain loyal forever. Brushing (required for her long hair) is a great way to work on that bonding process. She’s not fond of dogs and seems indifferent to other cats. A slow introduction to other cats will be the best way for introduction. This is the time of year when shedding becomes a real problem for dog owners. Here are some tips from the AKC. Choose the correct brush suited for your pet by looking at the package’s recommendations. Select a healthy diet; Omega-3 fatty acids are helpful. Increase water intake to avoid dehydration. Visit your vet because some medical conditions can cause excess shedding. Take your pup for a full checkup if he is exhibiting exceptional hair loss or is losing hair in patches. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart) and is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday and Monday. Call 423-442-1015 and check out all available pets on our website at www. monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org. Have you been to the MCFA Thrift Store run by volunteers of the Monroe County Animal Friends of Animals (MCFA)? It’s located at 3949 Highway 411 in Madisonville (across from Kentucky Fried Chicken). If you haven’t been there for a while, you might be missing out on some tremendous bargains. New merchandise arrives daily and is priced to move. Clothing, shoes, furniture, kitchen ware, bedding, appliances, books – we’ve got it all. Donations are greatly appreciated and are accepted Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 3:30 pm. All proceeds go to help the homeless animals of Monroe County. Shopping hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, and worker volunteers are always in high demand. Like us on Facebook for up to date sale information or call 423-420-3423. Please consider offering a foster home to help the pets at Second Chance Pals (SCP), a program of Monroe County Friends of Animals. These foster homes help older and/ or sick pets that need more assistance than the usual homeless pet. They often cannot be treated until they have a foster home commitment where they can safely stay until their recovery needs are met. Veterinary care and expenses are provided for their treatments and they are closely monitored. SCP also helps pets who have had to be given up by their owners. Sometimes it’s because of a move or because the owner just can’t take care of the pet anymore. Please check out their website at www. secondchancepals.org for more information.

Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar at Knoxville Children’s Theatre November 1-17

K

noxville Children’s Theatre, in partnership with Clayton Foundation, will present 14 live performances of William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. KCT’s version is a specially adapted under two-hour version of the classic tragedy geared for ages 12 and up. The play will be performed November 1-17: Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1 and 5 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm. Caesar has returned to Rome in triumph after a devastating civil war. However, a group of conspirators is disturbed by Caesar’s increasing power and ambition. To help their cause, they persuade Brutus, a good friend of Caesar and a man regarded through the city for his honesty and honor, that the welfare of Rome demands that Brutus conspire against his own friend. Brutus joins the conspiracy and set events in motion that will leave Rome in deadly peril. The play is performed by 16 talented young actors from ages 12 to 17. Charlotte Stark, a KCT intern and student director of this season’s Little Women, plays the title role. KCT veteran performer Halle Boring, last seen as Mother Superior in KCT’s production of “Lilies of the Field,” plays Brutus. Austin Bishop will play the part of

Mark Antony, and Elijah Payne portrays Caius Cassius. Four actors are making their KCT debuts: Annabel Dattilo, Henry Lubke, LoRen Seagrove, and Shania Watson. The rest of the cast includes many KCT veteran performers: Abby Cowan, Beth King, Ethan Elder, Joshua Howerton, Eric Magee, Lauren Norton, Lydia Pulsinelli, and Maria Kauffman. KCT Artistic Director, Dennis E. Perkins, will direct the production. Carolyn Corley is the combat director. Senior Brycen Ritchie (West High) serves as Assistant Director, and senior Lauren Rymer (Bearden High) is the play’s stage manager. The show’s lighting designer is Alex Montgomery (Grace Christian Academy) with assistance from August King (Bearden Middle.) Saiya Palmer (West High), assisted by Julia Lance, (West Valley) designed the costumes. Conard Belitz (Oak Ridge High) is the Properties Master. Knoxville Children’s Theatre is located at 109 E. Knoxville Choral Society Presents Mendelssohn’s Elijah

T

November 8 at 7:30 pm

he Knoxville Choral Society’s 2019-2020 season opens with one of the largest and most dramatic choral works of all time, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, performed with full orchestra and featuring Knoxville’s own Metropolitan Opera bass-baritone, David Crawford, singing the title role. Recounting the Old Testament story as told in the Book of Kings, this powerful work ensured its place in choral repertoire at its premiere in 1846. The dialogue throughout the piece is a dramatic retelling of the Israelites’ waning faith in God during a long-lasting drought, as they resort to worshipping an alternate God, Baal. But secure in his belief and at the urging of several angels, Elijah seeks to restore his people’s faith. Join the Knoxville Choral Society under the direction of conductor and artistic director, John R. Orr, at Central Bearden Baptist Church, located at 6300 Deane Hill Drive in

Knoxville. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door, from a choral society member, or by visiting the Knoxville Choral Society website at www.knoxvillechoralsociety.org.

thens Community Theatre (ACT) announces auditions for the February 2020 production, Jesus Christ Superstar, music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Tim Rice. Two opportunities to audition are Sunday, November 10, at 5 pm and Monday, November 11, at 6 pm at The Arts Center. Show dates for Jesus Christ Superstar are February 14-23, 2020. ACT seeks actors, singers, and dancers ages 18 and older to audition for the rock opera. Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for more than 40 years. The iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and “Gethsemane.” Those auditioning should come ready to sing a solo (accompanist provided), perform simple choreographed movement, and sing from the score. Jesus Christ Superstar is directed by ACT veteran, G. David Brown, and Kay Simmons, another ACT veteran, is music director. Bob Gruen on Green Day

November, 2019, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 17A

A

by

s teens, baby boomers very likely have seen the work of legendary rock photographer, Bob Gruen. If you read our last interview with Gruen, you know that he doesn’t sit still. Always capturing our culture in images that interests us, he has done so, again, with his latest book of photos entitled Green Day – Photographs by Bob Gruen. Gruen has been a friend of the guys in Green Day for more than 25 years. During that time, he has shot and amassed quite a treasure trove of images. He was reached at his gallery in New York City to talk about the book. “For me, rock and roll is about freedom,” he said. “Rock and roll is the freedom to express your feelings very loudly in public. I think that’s what The Clash was certainly doing, and I think that’s what Green Day’s doing. They’re also big fans of The Clash. I think they’re inspired a lot by them, as were so many bands.

Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com

They make great records, but they’re also a really fantastic live band. They hit the stage running, and they stay running for two-and-a-half to three hours. And they just keep the audience’s attention.” Why this book, and why now? “It’s interesting, my relationship with Green Day, because I never worked for them, and I was never even on assignment for a magazine for them. I met them as friends when I went with my friend, Jesse

Malin’s band, Degeneration, who opened for Green Day. We had seen Green Day once or twice in New York, then I saw them first in ’94 at a party at Don Hill’s club. Then, a little later, they had a party at Don Hill’s club when their Dookie record came out. Then Jesse was going to Europe to open for them, and he suggested we come along. I had had a few drinks, and I thought it was a good idea. Ha! Ha! “Next thing I knew, my wife and I were in England, and we saw Degen and Green Day three times in England. Then we went to Paris and saw the show there. After a week or so, I was a fan. I thought they were fantastic. I think that’s when we first got to know each other. They’re fun guys to hang out with. It turned out we had a similar cynical kind of sense of humor. And they were thrilled. They grew up looking at my pictures, and they were thrilled that I was interested in taking pictures of them. “Later, Tre’ was saying to me that they hired another guy who traveled with them

for like two months. He was a fashion photographer who was taking a load of pictures with the idea of making a book that he never made because he took too many pictures and couldn’t edit it down or something. I don’t know. Maybe he took too many and didn’t get any good ones. “Fortunately, the company that I work with, Abrams Image, liked the idea, so we made a really nice book. The art director, Shawn Dahl, came up with some great ideas to make the book more interesting instead of just square photos. He said, ‘We should change the shapes on all the different pages.’ Billie Joe actually came up with the idea of having Avi Spivak do little drawings all over the book, and that made it very Green Day. It makes it very kid like. And then Billie Joe sent it forward that he wrote, which is three pages handwritten on like school paper, lined the paper up. And it just looks so Green Day. We printed it as he wrote it. We didn’t type it up. We just photographed the pages and put them in. It’s really a fun book. Tre’ and Mike also added comments – and Billie Joe – throughout the book. It’s really fun. I mean, any fans would surely like it. We tried to make it simple. Nothing formal, that’s for sure.” As for fan (and band) response so far? “The band likes it very much,” said Gruen. “I mean, the reaction I got back from them – they thought it was great. They’re really happy that I made it. And as far as sales, within a month, it went into second printing already. So that’s a good reaction.” Indeed, it is. Our chat with Bob Gruen was quite extensive, covering See Hear Yoko, how Yoko Ono is doing, more about Green Day, and what is on Bob’s radar for the next year or two. You can read all of that, as well as order Green Day, by visiting www.boomerocity.com.

A Company You Can TRUST

few years ago we hired a man in the community to do some home renovations for us. He stole our money and left us high and dry. John and I were left to do all he left undone. We’ve had friends who have been taken advantage of as well. It’s a terrible feeling to know you’ve been overcharged or downright swindled. We learned our lesson the hard way. Now we check ratings, get referrals, and are suspicious of anyone charging less yet promising more. How do you know if you can trust a company? I’d say one of the bet gauges of trust is to ask, “Who trusts it?” If the company has a high repeat business clientele and a high degree of customer satisfaction, that’s a key indication. More than 30% of our monthly clients are repeat! And another 15% are referral. Many clients leave us their house keys or the garage code, and we do the work while they are at work or out of town. That’s trust! I believe there should also be an exceptional level of trust WITHIN a company. Fun facts about our Surface Doc employees: Our lead cleaning tech is our son-in-law, Tony. Our foreman, Harrison, has been known in a business sense by John for years, and even before Harrison ever worked for Surface Doc, his work ethic and integrity was obvious. Three of our “single” cleaning techs have just moved into a home, owned by the company, where they share life outside of work. Two of them have been best friends since childhood. Each of them is a fine, upstanding young man. We are truly blessed to have them, and they are lucky to have relationships with one another. There is a level of trust within our small company that I’ve rarely seen before.

Occasionally a job doesn’t go as planned. There are times John and the guys pick up a Saturday to make a job right that needs to be stellar before a party scheduled for Sunday. Occasionally John has even agreed to a last-minute job and shown up well before the workday begins to accommodate a desperate homeowner. Time and time again, I’ve seen John and his guys go above and beyond every reasonable expectation. If you are looking for a company that you can trust, that

will do a great job in a timely fashion at a fair price, please give us a call. John and his crew never charge for an estimate or a demonstration. Visit us online at www.SurfaceDoc.com to see before/after videos and photos, and then give John a call to schedule your cleaning. Surface Doc 865-567-1986 www.surfacedoc.com

Murphy beds can be incorporated into almost any space.

WE’RE #1 IN EAST TENNESSEE WITH OVER 8,000 CUSTOM SHOWER INSTALLATIONS

urphy beds have long been a solution for condos and other homes where floor space is a premium. Today many homeowners of larger homes are also opting for a Murphy bed to make a room multi-functional. William L. Murphy invented the Murphy bed in the early 1900s. He wanted to hide the bed in his cramped oneroom apartment so he could have more space to entertain. He experimented with a folding bed, eventually receiving a patent. These beds have been helping homeowners save space for more than 100 years! Tailored Living of Knoxville, the area’s whole-home organization experts, designs and installs Murphy beds to meet each individual customer’s needs and style. Investing in a Murphy bed can: » Create More Space – Most families live in all their space, so a dedicated guest room is not always practical. If you’re short on space but need an extra bed, a Murphy bed is the perfect solution. It provides flex-space for any home. You can use the room as a bedroom at night and a playroom, home office, or living room at other times. You won’t lose any space, and guests will have a comfortable place to sleep. » Increase Home Value – If you decide to rent or sell your home, maximizing space is an important feature for potential buyers. A Murphy bed allows the ability to maximize a home’s space while increasing the value of the house. » Designed for Any Space – Designs depend on your needs and budget. Tailored Living design experts thoughtfully design each bed to seamlessly integrate into your space, proving you don’t have to compromise style when space is limited. A Murphy bed can be elaborate or basic. Many designs include desks on one side so the room can also be a home office by day. Or the bed can be bordered by a bookcase, side cabinets, or pull-out drawers to give you extra storage. Most of all, it takes up very little space when closed, approximately 16” deep. Murphy beds come in twin, full, queen, or king sizes to accommodate any space. » Fit Any Décor – From a solid gray finish to a dark wood-grain finish, choose the look that fits your style. Also, there are custom LED light options to ensure there is enough lighting when the bed is in use. If you want the flex-space a Murphy bed provides, give Tailored Living of Knoxville a call for a free consultation using their 3D design software. Let Tailored Living help you recreate your current space!

A New Dimension in Body Sculpting

Y

ou’re watching what you eat, you’re staying active, but you’re still unhappy with your body shape. Sound familiar? That stubborn problem area on your waistline can be annoyingly resistant to diet and exercise. That’s where the truSculpt® 3D procedure can help. Developed by Cutera, the global pioneer in performance and innovation within the cosmetic and aesthetic laser device field, the non-invasive, truSculpt® 3D procedure can help you sculpt your body by quickly and easily targeting both large and small problem areas. We recently interviewed J. Kevin Buchanan, MD, Knoxville area’s family practice physician and truSculpt® 3D practitioner, to discover just how this revolutionary, new, state-of-the-art medical breakthrough can help patients treat those problem areas around their midsections. MV: Dr. Buchanan, truSculpt® 3D uses radio frequency technology to help decrease circumference and diminish fat in patients. Tell our readers just how this technology works. Dr. Buchanan: truSculpt® 3D uses conductive radio frequency to achieve selective and effective disruption of the subcutaneous fat tissue, the fat that lies directly beneath the skin, while maintaining comfortable surface temperatures. MV: Just how safe is truSculpt® 3D? Dr. Buchanan: truSculpt® 3D, which is FDA cleared, is a safe, non-invasive body sculpting technology, where the temperature of the skin and subcutaneous tissue are maintained at comfortable levels while consistently achieving the best results.

HALF THE COST OF COOLSCULPTING Abdomen & Flanks: $1,000 Neck & Chin: $300 Arms: Starting at $500 Legs: Starting at $500

MV: How quickly will clients see visible results? Dr. Buchanan: Visible results can usually be seen as soon 6 to 12 weeks, with maximum benefits at 12 weeks. Some clients report seeing results in as little as 4 to 6 weeks. MV: How much fat thickness reduction will patients experience? Dr. Buchanan: Clients can expect fat reduction of targeted areas of up to 24%.

WHAT I'M THANKFUL

MV: Is it possible to treat more than one problem area per session? Dr. Buchanan: Yes, it is possible to treat multiple areas in a single session, including the neck, upper arms, abdomen and flanks, back, and thighs. MV: Should clients experience any discomfort or downtime after the procedure? Dr. Buchanan: Some clients may experience some redness of the skin that typically resolves itself in 8 to 12 hours. Others report soreness of the treatment area that may last for a few days. There is no restriction on activity following the procedure. MV: Treatments are administered by an NP or medical assistant under your personal supervision, correct? Dr. Buchanan: We have a nurse practitioner, two medical assistants, and myself who are all trained and certified to perform the truSculpt® 3D procedure. MV: How can our readers who are interested learn more about the truSculpt® 3D? What is the best way to reach you? Dr. Buchanan: Call Ashley Burchfield at 865-6751953 ext. 224 for more information or to schedule a free consultation or visit www.tru3dbody.com.

Vaccines Save Lives

4B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, November, 2019

By Ellen Phillips, PharmD & Founder of believeRx

I

t was during September 2003 when 77 customers who had dined at a local restaurant contracted hepatitis A from green onions furnished by one of the restaurant’s vendors. The outbreak occurred among food handlers and patrons and was not traced to any particular employee of the restaurant. Hepatitis A can result in liver damage and is easily spread by the fecal-oral route or by contaminated food or water. Signs of hepatitis A are quick onset, flu-like symptoms such as stomach discomfort, fever, joint pain, diarrhea, decreased appetite, light colored stools, dark yellow urine, and jaundice. Some people have no signs of hepatitis. It can take 15-50 days (average is 28 days) for symptoms to develop, and adults are more likely to develop symptoms than children less than six years old. Symptoms can last anywhere from two to six months. Hepatitis A can be very serious, especially in a person who already has liver problems. Hepatitis A causes acute and relapsing infections, but it goes away and is not chronic like hepatitis B and C. Treatment for hepatitis A is bed rest, fluids, and fever reducing medicines approved by a doctor. A vaccine designed to prevent hepatitis A is given in two doses, separated by six months, and lasts 25 years in adults. Tdap – tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) – are all potentially serious illnesses that can be prevented by getting vaccinated. Tetanus causes extreme stiffness and severe muscle cramps all over the body. Children who play outside are at risk for tetanus, which lives in ground soil. Diphtheria can lead to severe breathing and/or heart problems and paralysis. Pertussis can cause such bad coughing that babies can struggle to breathe and can have complications like seizures and brain damage or death. Both diphtheria and pertussis are air-borne. Whooping cough outbreaks still occur in the United States, resulting in hospitalizations and deaths.

Now Open!

Pregnant women should receive one dose of Tdap during each pregnancy, regardless of when you last received Tdap, to protect the unborn infant against whooping cough. The ideal time to give Tdap in pregnancy is between 27 and 36 weeks. Shingles can be treated with two vaccines. Shingrix, with a 90% effective rate, is your first line of defense. Studies show that the Shingrix vaccine stimulates the body to produce more antibodies, causing 24 times increase in T-cells. This action alone makes Shingrix 12 times higher in immunity than the second vaccine, Zostavax. Research shows that two doses of Shingrix separated by two months provides four years immunity but possibly much longer. The second dose ensures longer term protection. Shingrix is made differently from other vaccines. It’s the first shingles vaccine to contain a non-live component and an adjuvant designed to target the shingles virus. As a person ages, their T-cell immunity declines, putting them at higher risk of contracting the shingles virus. Shingles can be very painful, causing blisters and a rash that can cause serious complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia, a condition that causes burning pain long after the blisters and rash are gone.

Influenza vaccinations are recommended for individuals six months and older. The vaccine protects not only the person who receives the immunization, but also others they come into contact with, including pregnant women, babies and young children, older adults, and people with existing chronic health conditions. The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu. Almost everyone needs to immunize against the flu except someone who had a life-threatening allergic reaction to the flu vaccine, if they have Guillain-Barre Syndrome (an immune system disorder), and children under six months old. The side effects of the vaccine are mild pain or redness at the injection site, fever, muscle aches, and headache. Serious side effects are rare. A flu vaccine is needed every year because a person’s immunity declines over time and because flu viruses are constantly changing, requiring the reformulation of the flu vaccine. While flu vaccine effectiveness can vary, the CDC reports that flu vaccinations can reduce the risk of serious flu illness by 40-60% and may prevent serious complications of the flu, including death. The yearly flu vaccine usually comes out in August. It is recommended that you receive your vaccination as soon as possible, as it can take up to two weeks for your body to achieve full immunity from the vaccine. At believeRx, we strive to become an active member of your total health and wellness team. Providing you with the most up-to-date information on these and other vaccinations, as well as a whole host of other health related subjects, is our commitment to you and our community. I would like to personally invite you to visit us at believeRx and discover for yourself the difference we can make in your life and the lives of your entire family. believeRX 9627 Countryside Center Lane Knoxville, TN 37931 865-214-6672 www.mybelieveRX.com

ogwood Arts is on a mission to Keep Knoxville Blooming – one tree at a time. Through our annual Bazillion Blooms program, disease-resistant dogwood trees are on sale now at www.dogwoodarts.com or by phone at 865-637-4561 through November 18th. These 2’–4’ bare-root trees are available for $25 each or five for $100. Tree pick-up day and community-wide tree planting date is set for Saturday, December 7th. Planting trees is a simple and effective way to clean our air, reduce stress, and conserve the environment. We encourage everyone to “dig-in” and make a lasting difference by planting trees during the fall gardening season. Trees planted in the fall have time to develop strong root systems during the winter months before the challenges of the drying summer heat. The Bazillion Blooms program began in 2009 with a mission to revitalize tree plantings along our historic Dogwood Trails and throughout the region.

The Smartest and Easiest Way to Buy and Sell

ho wants to pay the full retail price when shopping, especially for furniture? Most items sold at retail stores today inherently include enormous markups, and furniture and room décor are no exceptions. That’s why we launched Premiere Consignment. Premiere Consignment offers both buyers and sellers the perfect venue for conveniently buying and selling quality, name brand, gently used furniture, décor, Oriental and area rugs, and art at prices far below their original retail selling prices. The sellers win because they can conveniently sell no longer used quality items resulting from a relocation, downsizing, or estate sale. Safety is another important consideration, because sellers don’t have to invite strangers into their home or sit and wait for buyers who never show up or who want to negotiate an already agreed upon price for an item. Buyers also have full access to our full-service eBay store as well. Buyers especially appreciate our large selection, as well as our convenient showroom location and business hours. And because we accept most forms of payment, there is no need for sellers to be concerned about bad checks or handling large amounts of cash. Homeowners, here’s a great suggestion

for the upcoming holidays. Think back to how conveniently guests were able to enjoy your home last holiday season. Did a particular room appear cluttered, or was the traffic pattern or flow obstructed? Was there sufficient seating for all of your guests? Was your dining room table too large or too small? Would a buffet or sideboard have been helpful when serving meals? Reflecting on last year’s holiday events provides you with the perfect opportunity on just how to improve your home for the upcoming holiday season, allowing you to comfortably and efficiently entertain friends, family, and neighbors this Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. Here’s how Premiere Consignment can help. From décor to furniture, we can help you enhance every room in your home or help you find a new home for those quality items that you may no longer need. Why not let Premiere Consignment take the inconvenience out of buying and selling quality, name brand furniture, décor, Oriental rugs, and art while saving you up to 90% off full retail pricing? Premiere Consignment is simply your smartest and easiest way to buy and sell! Premiere Consignment 320 Lakeside Plaza Loudon, TN 37774 865-458-9721 www.premiereconsignment.com

What Retirees Are Really Talking About Today By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

T

here’s so much talk in TV commercials about helping retirees “reach their goals,” followed by images of a couple holding hands on a beach, gazing contentedly at a beautiful ocean scene. I get it – most people do mention to me that they’d like to travel in retirement. But do you know what retirees really want? They almost always tell me they want to know they can keep living the lifestyle they are used to living, without the fear of running out of money. As simple as that. But they are looking for the confidence to know it’s possible, no matter how many retirement years stretch ahead of them. When you think about it, that’s a pretty

tall order. According to the Society of Actuaries, for 65-year-old married couples, there is a 72% chance one of them will live to age 85 and a 45% chance one of them will live to age 90. Do you know someone who lived into their late 90s? I do. In fact, in retirement planning, we think of longevity risk, or the unknown length of time you’ll live, as a “risk multiplier.” The longer you live, the more chances you’ll experience major financial risks: Market corrections, costly declining health, rising taxes, and inflation. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the U.S. experienced 11 recessions during the 64-year period from 1945–2009. So your investment portfolio would need to weather four to six

recessions in a similar 30-year retirement while still providing you a comfortable lifestyle and not going to zero. Retirement is not for the faint of heart! Longer life expectancies make these risks a “when,” not an “if.” And these risks don’t happen in isolation. It’s entirely possible for the stock market to have a losing streak at the same time your spouse gets very sick. Working with a comprehensive financial planner becomes imperative as you plan for a consistent retirement. Advisors focused on just investing are not going to be able to help you navigate the treacherous financial waters of retirement. We specialize in helping you steer your boat – through the calm currents and the frightening rapids – no matter

what’s around the bend.

Custom garage storage cabinets capture vertical space, maximize storage, and provide safe, organized storage for all your needs. » Enclosed cabinets with adjustable shelves let you configure your storage for exactly what you have, whether heirloom china or sports memorabilia. » Optional locking doors and drawers keep toxic chemicals and dangerous tools secure from curious pets and children. » Create a mudroom at the connecting door to the house so wet coats, jackets, and boots don’t make it inside. Wall-Hanging and Overhead Systems Provide More Space Along with garage cabinets, wall-hanging systems and overhead racks make the space more efficient by getting everything off the floor and freeing up space so you can actually park cars in the garage. November in the Garden by

F

Lisa Grugin

all arrived and has been much prettier than I anticipated. I was afraid that the drought would cause all the trees to drop their leaves without coloring up, but the beauty of Mother Nature prevailed! Yes, there were a few plants that went straight to the dormant stage. I believe every cherry tree in my neighborhood was naked by the end of September. For the most part, however, fall has still been lovely. I know that most of you don’t think of November as a gardening month, but it is important to get your yard ready for “bedtime.” Steps that you take on pretty days this month will save you a lot of trouble in the spring. The first step is always a good checkup. Walk around on one of these beautiful days and see what is going on. Check for damage to branches and trunks of trees. Look for signs of critters such as moles and voles. Do you have disease or insect problems that need to be addressed? Make a list of plants that should be pruned/divided/removed and note what did well and what did not. Start visualizing how you want things to look next year and make your plans. The next step is a good clean-up. It is critical that you get up any leaves that have insect or disease damage so that the eggs or fungal spores do not overwinter and reemerge next year! Cut back dead or dying foliage on your perennials, but be careful not to cut into the crown (the low growth at the base). Remove any annuals that remain in your beds or containers. Trim off dead or damaged branches on shrubs. It is also critical that you get rid of the weeds that are already starting to pop up. Pull or spray them and then apply a pre-emergent. You will need to reapply during the winter months to prevent cool season weeds such as henbit and chickweed. Weeding never stops! If spraying is your method of inflicting death on plants, several companies are coming out with weed killers that are less toxic while still being effective. Please do your research before you start spraying willy-nilly. While you are cleaning up, consider adding compost or rotted manure to planting areas. Spread it across your beds and it will decompose during the winter months, releasing all those good nutrients and making the soil easier to work with. Now that you have everything all nice and cleaned up, it is a good time to plant! Trees and shrubs will get roots established before summer if put in now. Perennials also do well if planted in the fall. Pansies and violas can still be planted in flower beds and containers to give you a wonderful show of color during the colder months. If you are going to plant bulbs, try to get them in by the end of November or put them into the refrigerator to chill. I mentioned pansies, so here is a quick information

tidbit: There is no such thing as a winter pansy or a summer pansy. I had a young lady in this spring who had been sold “summer pansies” at a box store and I had to explain that she had been lied to. A pansy is a pansy, and they are cool season annuals. Plant them now and they will go through the winter just fine. ALL POINSETTIAS ARE GROWN ON OUR FAMILY FARM It is warm weather that they don’t like, so by the end of CHRISTMAS TREES AND May, they are usually ready GREENERY ARE FROM A to be pulled up and replaced FARM IN NORTH CAROLINA with warm season annuals. They like to be fertilized regularly and need five to six hours of sun. NOVEMBER 22ND • 6-8PM The final gardening step is to mulch your beds to keep soil temperature and OPEN MON THROUGH SAT 9AM-6PM • SUNDAY 1- 5PM moisture levels stable. (If you applied mulch in the 9885 Highway 11E, Lenoir City, TN 37772 spring and still have an adewww.meadowviewgreenhouse.com • 865-986-7229 quate layer, take a rake and “fluff” the mulch because it can become very hard and compacted over the summer.) Three to four inches is all that you need, and remember not to pile the mulch around your trees. Donuts, not volcanoes. Hardwood mulch, pine needles, or leaf mulch works well. An easy way to create leaf mulch is to blow or rake leaves onto your lawn, run over them with a lawn mower, and then spread them back across your beds. Don’t forget to keep our feathered friends in mind during the upcoming months. All ceramic or concrete birdbaths should be drained and stored for the winter, but think about buying a small plastic or metal replacement. Birds get thirsty and dirty in the winter, too! It is also critical that you keep your feeders clean and full as natural sources of food become scarce. I will finish by reminding you that we are a great source for your holiday decorating needs. We have poinsettias from our family farm in Fentress County and freshly cut ONEX trees and greenery from a farm in North Carolina. Next month I will give you a detailed list of care instructions for holiday plants. Until then, I wish all of you a wonderful MARY FRANCES Thanksgiving! ost everything evolves over time. In the course of just one generation, how we communicate has changed dramatically. We have experienced incredible advances in healthcare, and most of us rely on a single handheld device to make appointments, keep abreast of late breaking news and our personal finances, take photos and videos, stream movies and sporting events, and much more. My goal in launching Serendipity Boutique in historic downtown Loudon was to help today’s woman evolve in the world of fashion, particularly breaking free from the unwritten fashion rules that suggest we have to dress like our moms. We are not our mothers! I, for one, don’t want to dress like my mother did. And guess what? We don’t have to anymore. Women should dress according to our body style and NOT our age. You should have fun with fashion and look great at the same time. I have spent many years helping women look younger with the right fashions. Women come to me all the time and say I can’t wear this or that. Pause! You can oftentimes wear this or that if the item is the right cut for your body type. At Serendipity Boutique, we specialize in carrying to-

day’s latest fashion styles and trends that can defy ages. If you would like to make a splash in a fashionable on-trend leather jacket at 60, we can show you how. And you’ll look fabulous! Do you have an event coming up where you would like to make an entrance? Let us show help you to create that new image you have been searching for. We can even help you conceal those few extra pounds that you’re working on losing. Are you looking to find that perfect gift for someone on your holiday shopping list? Serendipity Boutique has all kinds of wonderful things for your holiday needs that make great gifts. I would like to personally invite you to experience an entire new world of women’s fashions that you are unlikely to find anywhere else. In our new upscale boutique, you will discover many exciting new lines from top designers from around the world that will help you to re-imagine fashion. Located in historic downtown Loudon, you are just a few short minutes from a fabulous new you.

y 2050, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the population of people aged 65+ will nearly double to approximately 84 million. As the population ages, there is growing demand for aging-in-place solutions that let people stay in their homes. At ShelfGenie®, we manufacture custom, Glide-Out™ shelf solutions to improve access and functionality in the kitchen, pantry, and bathroom. Kitchen Solutions

Since every home’s main activities center around the kitchen, it’s important to consider safety and convenience when redesigning or updating this space. Glide-Out™ shelving improves organization and makes it easier to access items such as dishes, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, and small appliances such as blenders, slow cookers, and toasters. They pull out the full depth of the cabinet, which improves lighting and makes it easier to see everything at a glance. They also make it easier to retrieve and replace items without bending and reaching, which avoids strain on the back and knees. November Featured Artists at the Art Market Gallery Kate McCullough – Painting

I began painting in watercolor about 17 years ago after a 35 year hiatus from art. Initially my studies at Villa Marie College and SUNY College at Buffalo included general design, art history, and oil and acrylic painting. When I returned to painting, I decided that watercolor was a medium that I would like to explore. I immediately fell in love with it, and I have not looked back. I started with courses with Marcia Goldenstein and Whitney Leland at UT and then moved on to workshops at Arrowmont with Don Lake and Sue Archer, Kanuga with Linda Baker and Don Andrews, Cheap Joe’s with Linda Kemp, three workshops with John Salminen, and a couple with Paul Jackson. I presently teach a watercolor class at the Fountain City Art Center. I am the former president of the Knoxville Watercolor Society, a member of the Art Market Gallery in downtown Knoxville, and a signature member of the Tennessee Watercolor Society. There is so much freedom in being able to create. The world of painting is a magical place, where the looking glass is only limited by my imagination. The goal for my art is to not only reach that deeper place, but to offer something to the viewer that could reach a place in them that has meaning as well. Karen Kyte – Clay I’ve been an artist ever since I held crayons. I decorated everything and made endless mud-pies. I was the busiest, messiest kid on the block. It was logical and practical of course to study medical technology – that was until I took a painting class. Liver flukes lost their glamor, replaced by my real passion, mud-pies. I graduated with a B.S.F.A. from the University of South Dakota and continued making art and still continue. I feel like the guy in “Close Encounters” making the lumps of clay into Devils Tower, not knowing why, just knowing he must. My creations are spontaneous. I see compelling images in a lump of clay. The clay speaks to me, wills itself into a certain form. I am fascinated by shape, color, and movement. For me, making art is a way of seeing, being, and thinking. I am grateful that earth formed art previously known as mud-pies replaced microorganisms. Hope you enjoy! The Art Market Gallery is located at 422 South Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 1 to 6 pm.

There should be a place for every item in the bathroom, from toiletries and medication to bath towels and cleaning products. Glide-Out™ shelving in the linen closet or cabinets maximizes storage space and functionality. To utilize the space under the sink, glide-outs can be customized to fit around pipes. Seniors will be able to access whatever they need without bending over and reaching into the back of the cabinets. ShelfGenie® Glide-Out™ shelving can take a space that’s difficult to use and maximize its potential. Whether someone has arthritis, has trouble seeing, or uses a walking aid or wheelchair, our shelving solutions can make a huge difference in quality of life. fter a highly successful opening season, Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show in Pigeon Forge prepares to sail into the holidays with a new Christmas show that offers a spectacular swashbuckling spin on “A Christmas Carol” with Captain Scrooge and his cavalier crew. The premiere of this holiday show promises to be a Christmas adventure unlike anything else experienced in the Smokies this yuletide season. Opening on Friday, November 1, and continuing through January 4, 2020, Pirates Voyage combines a classic Christmas tale with a bountiful feast that will join together a pirate’s “Yo Ho” with the season’s “Ho Ho Ho.” “We invite swashbucklers of all ages to start a new Christmas tradition for the holidays like no one else can offer,” said Jeff Thomas, General Manager of Pirates Voyage. “Where else can families come together and create memories that will last long after the holidays are gone – with pirates, acrobatics, a special delicious meal, a classic holiday story with its own special pirate twist, and angels helping bring about the true meaning of Christmas in our Nativity? As we like to say, it’s a Holly Jolly Roger Christmas event!” During Christmas at Pirates Voyage, high tide meets the yuletide in this new show that offers a variety of holiday fun and entertainment that will make for lasting holiday memories for everyone who attends. The Mystical Christmas Spirit takes the captain through time and space to find the true meaning of Christmas, including a “dream” where giant toys come to life and perform amazing acrobatics high above the indoor lagoon. Other adventures during

this holiday experience at Pirates Voyage include a live Nativity, an angel with a special message, and a comical Christmas castaway and her sea lion companion. Holiday guests also will be thrilled by an epic battle between the crimson and emerald pirates as they compete for the coveted Christmas treasure on land, on deck, in water, and high above two pirate ships. The adventure actually begins in the Pirates Village, where younger swashbucklers, as well as parents and grandparents, can “Join the Christmas Crew” and be transformed into mermaids and pirates before the main show begins. The fourcourse holiday feast straight from Captain Blackbeard’s yuletide galley makes Pirates Voyage the most unique place to eat in the Smokies. The meal begins with Voyager creamy vegetable soup and a homemade buccaneer biscuit. The feast fit for a pirate continues with cracklin’ pan-fried chicken, sugar cured ham, matey’s mac ‘n’ cheese, and Jolly Roger sweet potato souffle. Walk the plank peach turnover and unlimited Coca-Cola® products, tea, or coffee complete the meal. Vegetarian and gluten-free meals are available by request. Show times and reservations are available by calling 865-505-2469 or by visiting www.piratesvoyage.com.

Sell A Home in November or December? “P

November, 2019, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 11B

eople often assume that November and December are not good months to sell a home,” says Aleex Conner, Realtor with Realty Executives Associates. “In East Tennessee, we’re graced with good weather, and I’ve found that as long as there’s no snow or ice on the roads, people are always looking for homes since life’s circumstances can readily change. “For sellers, the advantage of listing a home now is that inventory is typically low. Less listings mean less competition, so your home has a greater chance of being the one buyers choose to purchase. Choosing an excellent real estate agent is the first step, so give me a call at 865-5916348!” If you sign up to list your home with Aleex Conner during No-

vember or December, you’ll receive a COMPLIMENTARY PRE-SALE HOME INSPECTION VALUED AT $350. This is a huge benefit to sellers because you’ll know if something expensive needs to be repaired on the front end before setting your sales price. Plus it makes your home more attractive to potential buyers since repairs have already been made. “Interest rates can change at a moment’s notice, so I closely monitor the volatility of the market and provide advice on the best timeline to lock in the rates for your mortgage,” says Lorie Jaynes, Senior Loan Officer with Mortgage Investors Group. “Our process is efficiently streamlined for things to flow smoothly in meeting your closing deadline. “Mortgage Investors Group offers a diversity of mortgage op-

tions, and whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or an empty nester, my goal is to find an option that will provide you with maximum benefits, both for the short-term and the long-term. Getting pre-approved is quick and easy, so give me a call at 865-315-8085 or visit www.loriejaynes.com to get moving today!”

Volunteers at Random Acts of Flowers

A

t the beginning of the fall semester, hundreds of incoming University of Tennessee students got a taste of what it means to be a Volunteer by serving the community through UT’s Ignite Serves program. One of the local organizations involved in this effort was Random Acts of Flowers. Random Acts of Flowers strives to improve the emotional health and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities by providing them with recycled flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness. The student Volunteers worked tirelessly on various projects to keep the Random Acts of Flowers workshop in tip-top shape. From cleaning out the Cold Room (where RAF keeps flowers cool and fresh), to washing hundreds of vases, to helping with all of the recycling and composting, they put forth a great Volunteer effort! Random Acts of Flowers also works with other local companies and organizations such as 21st Mortgage, Pilot Flying J, USI Consulting, and the Cerebral Palsy Center. Group activities at Random Acts of Flowers affords the participants the opportunity to work together as a team on various projects, from cleaning and arranging the workshop, to learning how to make flower arrangements, to making deliveries to those in local healthcare facilities that need an emotional boost and a moment of kindness. If you or your group want to make an impact with Random Acts of Flowers by volunteering or making a donation, please call us at 865-633-9082, email us at info@ RAFKnoxville.org, or visit our website at RAFKnoxville.org and fill out the Individual or Group Volunteer form.

he Piano Project of Knoxville, a public art and music initiative featuring painted and playable pianos, officially launched October 10 in downtown Knoxville. The reveal of Knoxville’s first-ever painted pianos took place on the Market Square stage at Bill Lyons Pavilion. The Piano Project of Knoxville was founded by jazz pianist, Brian Clay, and the launch is sponsored by the Downtown Knoxville Alliance. Clay presented the first three decorated pianos, and attendees had the opportunity to meet the artists and play and listen to piano music. “People will actively engage with the art by sitting and playing the pianos or passively engage by simply listening to the music,” said Clay. “The point is that community and interaction will happen, and that is beautiful.” Since moving to Knoxville 10 years ago, Clay has served as an advocate for arts in the community, including performances with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra. He received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Commission of Knoxville Arts Award in 2019. Clay, Downtown Knoxville Alliance, Dogwood Arts, City of Knoxville Public Arts Committee, and Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero participated in the official launch event. Volunteers will monitor and take care of the pianos in the upcoming fall and winter months. For more information, visit www.pianoprojectofknoxville.com. About the Downtown Knoxville Alliance Ensuring a vibrant, flourishing downtown is the primary mission of the Downtown Knoxville Alliance. Formed in 1993 as a Central Business Improvement District (CBID), the district encompasses a 0.67-square-mile area and is supported by a special assessment by property owners that is used to make improvements, enhance services, and promote downtown. The DKA continually focuses on attracting and retaining a thriving community of residents, businesses, and visitors in downtown Knoxville. For more information, visit www.downtownknoxville.org.
