Dr. Jay H. Lucas, Plastic Surgeon Jay Lucas, M.D. is a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Knoxville. His skillful and artistic approach to cosmetic surgery helps clients achieve their aesthetic goals. Dr. Lucas is committed to serving patient needs and is excited about expanding to a new location at 280 Fort Sanders West Boulevard. Below Dr. Lucas shares in his own words some thoughts on being a Pink Tie Guy. Being a Pink Tie Guy for the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Knoxville is a meaningful way of demonstrating my long-term support for finding a cure. I am honored to work with amazing women every day, from every walk of life. As a cosmetic surgeon, my passion is helping women regain confidence, feel less awkward and more normal after dealing with a variety of issues, including breast cancer. In my practice at the Lucas Center for Plastic Surgery, we take a personal approach and focus on the best possible outcome for each individual. That is never more important to me than with breast cancer survivors. My commitment is to help women move forward in life with confidence while inspiring other women to triumph over this disease. My Pink Tie is a symbol of hope and caring. Women have the ability to demonstrate a strength and determination that moves me, and until there’s a cure I will support Komen Knoxville every step of the way.

From the Publisher APRIL IN KNOXVILLE is a celebration of color as the flowering trees and bushes burst out in bloom. Beautiful azaleas in reds, pinks, corals, and white put on a spring show. Ornamental cherry trees with their pink blooms are spectacular against the still bare landscape, and Knoxville’s dogwood blooms are celebrated all month long with the annual Dogwood Arts Festival. Color is finally coming back to the landscape, brightening our surroundings and lifting our spirits. Spring is a great time to add or change color inside and outside your home. This month we are pleased to highlight the owners of CertaPro Painters of Knoxville, Jeff and Joann Brown. Their team of professionals can

not only brighten the interior and exterior of your home, but they also offer services beyond residential and commercial painting to provide a turn-key, one source experience. Read about their services that can benefit you in sprucing up your home for spring. Color is so uplifting not only in the landscape and the home but in other areas of our lives. This month we celebrate Easter, and a favorite activity at this time is coloring eggs, hiding them, and then seeing the smiles on children’s faces as they hunt and find them. You can enjoy this activity at RiverView Family Farm, and we invite you to read their story and visit them for some family fun. So it’s time to shed the winter blues and enjoy the bright colors of PUBLISHER + EDITOR IN CHIEF spring in East Tennessee.

Residential. Commercial. Interior. Exterior.

“PAINTING IS PERSONAL” THIS MONTH Everything Knoxville is proud to feature local area entrepreneurs and husband and wife team, Jeff and Joann Brown. Owners of CertaPro Painters here in East Tennessee, Jeff and Joann offer both their residential and commercial painting customers an entirely unique experience and a level of craftsmanship and service you might have thought no longer existed in the painting and contracting marketplace. Jeff and Joann provide each client the certainty of a job well done, backed up with one of the best reputations and warranties in the industry. CertaPro Painters offers their customers an unparalleled level of service that sets the standard for the rest of the industry. Their professional local team is available to answer all your questions and provide you with a detailed written proposal. Their on-site project managers oversee the job to make sure the customer’s expectations are met, and they then have an independent Quality Assurance team follow up with the customer to see how they would rate their experience. The CertaPro team is truly dedicated to a continuous improvement service process. EK: CertaPro Painters offers an uncommon experience in both the residential and commercial painting marketplace. Why has this been so successful for you? Jeff: We strive to operate with a simple 8

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2014

business philosophy. Our core values as a company are: » To always deliver what we promise, which to us means you will not be surprised. You can be assured that we will always deliver superior service that is on time and on budget. » Respect the individual. We are a company with a culture of respect. Respect for our

employees, respect for our community, and respect for you, our customers. » Have pride in what you do. We are painting experts. To that point, we take personal pride in all of our work. We engage in a “pride walk” at the end of every job with our customers before any payments are due. » Practice continuous improvement. We believe there is always room to improve how we paint your home or business, how we communicate with our customers, and how we build relationships. We work hard to ensure we carry out our values on every job, and our goal is to make it easy for our customers to do business with CertaPro. EK: CertaPro Painters places significant emphasis on communication that seems to be lacking in your industry. Explain. Joann: From the initial phone call, we strive to ensure we are available at a convenient time to perform our estimate, ensuring everyone in the decision process is available at the estimate. We walk the project with the customer and provide a detailed, written proposal on site. Further, we pledge to ensure we meet not only the painting detail, but the lifestyle arrangements as well. We have learned a lot throughout the years to ensure we ask the right questions to minimize inconvenience for our customers. Our communication is geared to make it easy on you! We feel people would

do more work around their homes if it was easier to have contractors perform the work! EK: Briefly explain how CertaPro differs from the common painting experience. Jeff: We view our business as a service business first and foremost, and painting is our product. So, we emphasize continuous improvement on what we refer to as “Certa Basics.” Our basics focus on the fundamentals of excellent service. Our 11 Certa Basics are geared toward ensuring our painters, carpenters, and other craftsmen understand we are doing more than painting and contracting – we are focused on making the experience one where our customers say, “wow, that was a great experience!”

EK: Tell our readers about the CertaPro Painters’ warranty and your independent Quality Assurance team. Joann: We offer a two-year written warranty on all residential projects, which is detailed on all of our proposals. In addition, we employ a third party service that calls or emails our customers requesting a response to a feedback survey. We are very proud to say that year in and year out, approximately 98% of our customers would refer us to their friends and family, and approximately 80+% scored us a perfect 10/10 on the overall survey! EK: CertaPro Painters offers services beyond just residential and commercial painting. What are some of those services?

obtain assistance in estimating a project’s cost, get help selecting colors, schedule service, read reviews, and much more. Just what has been their response? Jeff: We have many clients that use our website for a great source of information and validation. We have hundreds of reviews on our site, a list of services, a gallery, and you can even schedule your free estimate online very easily. We recently have set up a mobile app as well. Check it out, and see how easy it can be to work with us! EK: How can homeowners and commercial customers learn more about the CertaPro Painters difference or any ongoing specials you may be offering?

EK: CertaPro was recently honored with Angie’s List’s 2013 Super Service Award. Why is this recognition so important? Joann: It is important because it is an independent confirmation of our success and a platform to learn how we can continue to improve our services. Angie’s List is the leader in third party information on how contractors are performing. The recognition validates our commitment to our services and allows us a source of information to practice continuous improvement! EK: How do your clients benefit from having a project manager on-site at each project? Jeff: Our process is to ensure we perform a pre-job walk at the start of every project. We attempt to have our salesperson, job site supervisor, and our customers review the project at the very start to ensure all parties are on the same page from the outset. We have had great success with this process. Then, our service manager visits jobs daily to ensure our processes are being followed, our product quality is excellent, and any customer concerns or questions are answered timely. So, we employ a job site supervisor on every job and a service manager to monitor overall product quality and customer satisfaction.

Jeff: As we have grown as a company during the last 11 years, we have added team members that are able to perform more than painting, so we have slowly and methodically added services as we had staff at all levels to estimate, plan, execute, and manage these services. We perform all the basic painting and related services to include drywall work, wallpaper installation/removal, texture coatings, staining, etc. Over time we expanded those services to include concrete staining, coating brick, painting cabinetry, and interior and exterior light carpentry. In the past few years, we have expanded services to include deck construction/rebuild, remodeling, tile work, and full-service interior and exterior carpentry. EK: It would appear that your objective is to provide your customers with a broader selection of services and more of a turn-key, one source experience. Joann: Yes, it is. Our vision has always been to expand our services related to normal home improvement tasks and become a one-stop shop for certain home improvement that fit our expertise. If it is a minor home improvement project, chances are we can do it! EK: Existing and potential new clients have got to appreciate your website. They can

Joann: We are always looking for ways to ensure we provide more value to our clients and run different specials throughout the year. The best way to find out more about our services and your project is to call us for a no obligation, free estimate and consultation about your project. We have a well-trained commercial and residential sales and estimating team to assist our customers. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to say to our readers? Jeff: At CertaPro, we truly enjoy our commitment to making our projects easy on our customers with outstanding service, all at very competitive prices. We have grown our sales 11 straight years and improved our services each year as well. We are very proud of our outstanding team at CertaPro. We certainly are continuing to work hard to provide a valuable service to the community and hope you will give CertaPro the opportunity to quote your next project!

Are You Ready for April 15th? REMEMBER THE COMMITMENT you

made to yourself last April 15th not to wait until the last minute to prepare and file your federal and state taxes? Few dates on our calendars have the potential for lost sleep and added anxiety as does April 15th. As a business owner, wife, and mom, I know just how busy you are and how hectic life can be. But as a CPA and financial planner, I also know how important this time of the year can be to you, your family, and your future. The fact remains that most Americans who faithfully postmark their tax returns by April 15th experience a heightened sense of uncertainty, wondering if, in the rush to meet the deadline, they’ve overlooked legitimate deductions that could have reduced the amount of taxes they paid. Or perhaps they overlooked an IRA, Roth IRA, or Spousal IRA contribution they could have made. Decisions you make in a rush can have a lifetime of long-term consequences that can materially impact your financial security and your retirement. Well, good news – it’s not too late! There’s still time to lower your taxes before April 15th by making a contribution to a Health Savings

Account, IRA, or SEPIRA, or to consider a tax-free Roth IRA. We can also put you on track to minimize your taxes for 2014 and make certain that next April 15th comes and goes without the insomnia and anxiety. You’ll relax with the knowledge that your taxes were done on time, correctly, and that your financial plan for the future is a solid one.

Kristin Risdahl

Elementary School Teacher of the Year for Knox County Schools WHEN KRISTIN RISDAHL reflects on her love of teaching, she remembers a quote by American scientist Lewis Thomas: “We leave traces of ourselves wherever we go, on whatever we touch.” “I think this is true of teachers more than any other profession, and I am so blessed and rewarded to have the opportunity to reach kids,” said Kristin. Now, Kristin’s impact on her students has been recognized – she’s been named the Elementary School Teacher of the Year for Knox County Schools. “My favorite part of my job is getting the chance to inspire young minds,” she said. “Who else gets to spend seven straight hours with 26 kids who watch our every move and listen to everything we say? Well, at least a 12

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2014

percentage of what we say! I also enjoy getting to teach in goofy, fun ways, through songs, dances, drama, and more.” Kristin teaches fourth grade at BrickeyMcCloud Elementary. After earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, she interned at Brickey-McCloud and was then hired full-time. She’s been teaching there for nine years. “I started taking an Apple Core class at UT where I got to spend some time in an elementary school, and the rest is history!” she said. “I loved the idea of getting to have an impact on young lives. Several people have asked me throughout the years why I decided to become a teacher. My simple answer has always been the same: To inspire. My desire is to inspire and

make a difference in the lives of others in hope that they may one day desire to do the same.” When asked to describe a typical day, Kristin can do it in one word: Busy. Not only does she teach, but she is the Knox County Schools Professional Development Specialist in social studies and is currently writing new social studies curriculum for Common Core State Standards – just a few of her many responsibilities. “I wake up, have my quiet time, then go to work,” she said. “I spend about nine-and-a-half hours at school, then I go home to entertain my personable two-year-old daughter. Actually, she entertains me more than I do her! After she goes to bed, I work some more. Probably the biggest challenge for me is trying to fit in everything. There are so many things to do each day and not enough time for everything!” Kristin moved to Knoxville from Fort Lauderdale, FL, with the intention of being an interior designer. Years later, she knows she made the right choice. “Being named Teacher of the Year is huge to me,” she said. “I know how hard all teachers work, so it is quite an honor! I think I am still in shock.”

Value Beyond Measure

Discover a LifeChanging Investment in the Future of Your Children OUR CHILDREN’S FUTURES impact not only

our community but our world as well. Each child has the potential to directly or indirectly impact the lives of thousands of others, for good or bad, during his or her lifetime. Just how they impact their futures and the futures of others is often determined very early in life, largely at home and at school. Today’s parents are finding it increasingly more difficult to find the sound educational environment for their children, particularly if the wish for it includes a Christ-centered foundation. Fortunately, Knoxville offers a premier Christian education for young people from Pre-K3 through 12th grade with both a spiritual basis and outstanding scholastic program. Located on a rolling 77-acre campus in West Knoxville, Knoxville Christian School offers students a full range of educational and athletic opportunities. Students’ test scores exceed local, state, and national averages, resulting in 96% of graduates pursuing degrees at major colleges. Their mission is an important one: Develop children spiritually, emotionally, academically, and physically with Jesus as the standard and the Bible as their foundation, preparing them to be Godly representatives in their community, church, and home. But perhaps, most importantly, Knoxville Christian School offers students a spiritual foundation whose standard is the Lord Jesus Christ. A foundation not commonly found in today’s educational environment. A foundation that becomes the building block upon which a child learns and applies what they have learned later in life. Would you like to learn more about Knoxville Christian School? There are two upcoming opportunities. Open Houses will be held on April 17th and May 6th. Information sessions will be held from 9-10 am and tours from 10-11 am. Discover firsthand how you can make a life-changing investment in the future of your children and just why Knoxville Christian School’s attendance has tripled during the last three years.

April is for Art

Bidding for good buys at the Art Market Gallery

AFTER THE SNOWIEST and coldest winter in recent memory, we’re finally thawing out with the prettiest time of year in East Tennessee. April in Knoxville may highlight dogwoods in bloom, but it also showcases the annual Silent Auction at the Art Market Gallery, a downtown must-visit destination for original fine art and fine craft by East Tennessee artists. Prices at this artists’ cooperative are very affordable to begin with, but the opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind work for even less has always been a special incentive for art-lovers and gift-givers, making the month-long Silent Auction very popular. This April’s auction is offering a greater and more diverse selection of art to bid on than last year’s very successful event, since more than 60 memberartists have donated works. Traditional month-long bidding opens at 50% of an item’s stated value, but a new option is featured for 2014: The first person to pay 80% of its retail value may go home with it on the spot! Besides this always anticipated annual event, the Art Market Gallery features two of its gallery members in a monthly exhibit, with the opening reception taking place during downtown Knoxville’s First Friday Art Walk. April’s featured artists are Diana Scott-Auger of Greenback, who paints in acrylic, and Harriet Smith Howell of Rutledge, who makes silk-scarf wearable art. The opening reception, with complimentary refreshments and live music by the Tennessee Valley Accidentals, will be held Friday, April 4, from 5:30 to 9 pm. The Silent Auction and Featured Artist exhibits will be on display until Sunday, April 27. Every piece of fine art and craft in the Art Market Gallery is unique and handmade, from paintings to jewelry, stained glass to fiber, intricate woodturnings to functional pottery, leather, metal, photography, and so much more. Nothing is manufactured. No commercial prints are sold. Owned and operated by more than 60 professional artists, the Art Market Gallery is located at 422 S. Gay Street, next to Downtown Grill & Brewery. Hours are 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm Friday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. Parking in the abutting garage and on the street is free on weekends and after 6 pm weekdays.

Spring Ushers in Biltmore Blooms

Now through May 23, Biltmore Blooms offers a variety of activities for all ages in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Flowers take center stage with lavish orchid displays and thousands of spring bulbs in bloom in magnificent gardens designed at the turn of the century by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

Flower Bloom Schedule

Spring bloom provides constant changes in Biltmore’s gardens. The progression of blooms dictated by Mother Nature constantly unveils different flowers and new color combinations, resulting in a unique show for visitors to enjoy each week during Biltmore Blooms.

2014 BLOOM REPORTS

To stay up-to-date about what’s in bloom throughout the season, sign up for weekly bloom reports from Director of Horticulture, Parker Andes, and notifications of Biltmore’s featured “flower of the week” at www.biltmore. com/whatsblooming.

ORCHIDS

The earliest spring days kick off the celebration with two opulent orchid displays – one in the Winter Garden inside Biltmore House, the other a year-round orchid display located in the tropical Conservatory. At Biltmore House and the Conservatory, visitors can expect to see close to 1,000 orchids in bloom. Now through April 6, guests will be given the rare opportunity to step into the Winter Garden in Biltmore House to admire the sights 16

and fragrances of a special orchid collection. This light-filled, glass-domed garden room was once used by the Vanderbilts to relax and entertain in their home while surrounded by lush exotic plants. The room is typically roped off to guests during tours of Biltmore House.

OUTDOOR GARDENS

Among the first plants to bloom across the estate will be the sunny glow of daffodils and forsythia. The spring blooming schedule continues with the widespread tulip bloom throughout the estate, while later in the season will see many other flowers such as azaleas, rhododendron, roses, and vibrant annuals and perennials take hold.

Gardening Tips & Design Inspiration

To get the most out of the gardens during this wonderful time of year, join Biltmore’s gardening and design experts as they offer tips and techniques, all included with the price of estate admission. Spring is the perfect time to take advantage of Biltmore’s mountain surroundings with outdoor activities such as sporting clay shooting, Segway tours, horseback riding, carriage rides, fly-fishing, biking, float trips along the French Broad River, and the Land Rover Driving Experience.

Easter Egg Hunt & Easter Brunch

The estate’s annual Easter Egg Hunt for children ages two to nine takes place on Easter Sunday, April 20, on the front lawn of Biltmore House. Special children’s entertainment includes music, storytelling, magic shows, games, crafts, and taking photos with the Easter Rabbit. Hunts begin at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm. Registration begins two hours before each hunt and closes 15 minutes prior to the hunt. Parents should bring their own baskets for children to collect eggs. Reservations are recommended for Easter brunch at estate restaurants, Deerpark, or the Dining Room at the Inn on Biltmore Estate. For more information, call 800-411-3812.

Wise Decisions with Retirement in Mind Certain choices may lead you toward a better future. Presented by Ali Swofford Some retirees succeed at realizing the life they want, others don’t. It isn’t merely a matter

of stock market performance or investment selection that makes the difference. There are certain dos and don’ts that encourAli age retirement happiness and Swofford, PhD comfort.

Retire financially literate.

Some retirees don’t know how much they don’t know. Yet they mistake retirement income planning for the whole of retirement planning and gloss over longevity, estate, and potential health care expenses risks.

Retire knowing that you’ll have to assume some risk. Growth investing is increasingly seen

as a necessity for retirees who want to keep ahead of inflation. The average 65-year-old will live to be 84-86. Roughly 25% will live past 90, and 10% will live beyond 95.1 If these seniors only relied on fixed-income investments, they may end up with a reduced standard of living. Look at the Rule of 72: if an investment is yielding 2%, it will take about 36 years to double your money.2 Retire debt-free or close to debt-free. Who wants to retire with 10 years of mortgage payments ahead or a couple of car loans to pay off ? Even if your retirement savings are substantial, what will big debts do to your retirement morale? Retire with purpose. Retirees who know what they want to do – and go out and do it – are contributing to their mental and physical health. If they do something that is not only vital to them but important to others, their community can benefit as well. Retire healthy. Smoking, drinking, overeating, and a lack of physical activity can all take a toll on your capacity to live fully and enjoy retirement. It is never “too late” to quit smoking, quit drinking, or slim down. Retire where you feel at home. It could be where you live now; it could be hundreds of miles away. Look for ways to connect with people who share your experiences, interests, and passions and who welcome and encourage you. This social interaction is one of the great intangible retirement benefits.

Spring Recipes BY MICHELLE SAMPLES

Sweet and Sour Nappa

Spring Cleaning of March Madness MARCH MADNESS has ended, but the

remnants of our internal turmoil may still be lingering and in need of a spring cleaning. Traditionally spring is also the time when the liver is most active and most in need of cleansing. During this time, we may find ourselves to be irritable, easily angered, and generally in a foul mood. It is no coincidence that in earlier times, people who were disagreeable were often described as “liverish.” The people we encounter, the movies and news we see, the work we do, and even the weather can affect our mood. This is obvious, but one thing that can affect our demeanor to a great extent that we may not readily identify is food. Often we are unaware of why certain things we normally tolerate suddenly set us off. If we examine our intake for the previous 24 hours, we can usually identify something that is unhealthy for the liver, such as alcohol, oily or greasy foods, dairy, or nut butters. Often cleansing the liver is recommended by some type of fast or regimen, but this can be traumatic even for healthy livers. The liver is constantly cleansing the blood and itself. Instead of trying to cleanse it, it may be more prudent to simply provide it with the tools it needs to be healthy and, even more importantly, reduce or eliminate those damaging foods above. For the liver, the most pressing issue is the quality of oil. Good quality sesame oil is best used for cooking, while olive oil is best for salads. The method of cooking is also extremely important. Lightly sautéed

18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2014

vegetables or grains are much preferred over frying, but even with light sauté it is important not to let the oil get so hot that it begins to smoke. This changes the chemical nature of the oil. The next time you suddenly feel enraged, recall the amount of deep fried foods you have recently consumed. Some of the best foods that can assist the liver in taking care of itself are leafy greens. Of these, kale and collards are particularly adept at this, but others help as well. Eating a good portion of greens daily is probably the healthiest thing one can do for the liver. Sour tasting food also nourishes the liver. Sauerkraut is an excellent food for liver health, and citrus such as tangerines or oranges can actually be useful in tempering bouts of anger. March Madness has ended. You can make your own life and those around you much more pleasant by keeping your liver healthy, which will improve your mood, outlook, and therefore all of your relationships. Be kind to your liver. Note: Consult your healthcare professional

before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

Healthy Weight Loss and Management WEIGHT LOSS IS OFTEN an elusive goal for many, particularly when so many of us have tried and failed with the countless diet plans being offered on TV by a never ending list of celebrities. The true solution to weight loss is usually not as easy as portrayed on television. Numerous factors enter into controlling our weight – factors which are often ignored by most of the TV diet plans, especially when it comes to maintaining the weight loss. Healthy weight loss and maintenance often requires a comprehensive approach that considers the whole person, including diet and exercise, hormone levels, adrenal function, and many other factors. At West Side Medical Clinic, we offer this comprehensive approach to our patients. The number one priority for weight management is lifestyle change through proper diet, education, and exercise. TRAVEL AMERICA:

Welcome to Callaway Gardens CALLAWAY GARDENS is a 6,500 acre resort complex located in Pine Mountain, Georgia,

just outside of Columbus. The destination draws more than 750,000 visitors annually. Callaway Gardens was founded in 1952 by Cason J. and Virginia Hand Callaway to promote and protect native azalea species. His son, Bo Callaway, helped develop and run the garden. Today Callaway Gardens features a wide variety of recreational attractions, including a large enclosed butterfly habitat, the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center, and the John Sibley Horticultural Center, known for its wide variety of cultivars and native plants. The native palm Sabal minor maintains one of its northernmost populations in the area.

History and Expansion

The garden was originally conceived in 1930 after Cason J. Callaway discovered a rare azalea growing in the area. Callaway Gardens opened on May 21, 1952, as the Ida Cason Gardens, with a number of lakes, a golf course, and scenic drives. The gardens were named for the mother of founder Cason J. Callaway. Robin Lake Beach and the Overlook Azalea Garden opened the following year in 1953. In 1955, the gardens were renamed Ida Cason Callaway Gardens. The Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament, now Founder Cason an annual event, J. Callaway held its first competition in 1959. On April 12, 1961, founder Cason J. Callaway died and was succeeded as Chairman of the Board by his wife, cofounder Virginia Hand Callaway. The gardens have experienced numerous expansions following Cason Callaway's death. The Cason J. Callaway Memorial Forest opened in 1972 and was designated a National Natural Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior. The John A. Sibley Horticultural Center opened in 1984. Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden was the location for years of TV shows about growing vegetable gardens, most notably the southern edition of The Victory Garden. The annual Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens ran its first race in 1985. The Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center opened on September 25, 1988. "Fantasy in Lights," a Christmas light display, debuted in 1992. In 1999, the Azalea Bowl opened as well as the premiere of the Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival. In 2000, the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center was opened.

Trails

The garden has several trails both for walking and biking. The Discovery Bike Trail, a 10-mile trail that weaves through the wooded gardens, provides guests access to all attractions.

Robin Lake Beach

Robin Lake Beach is the world's largest manmade, white sand beach. The beach stretches a mile around 65-acre Robin Lake. Robin Lake Beach is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day Weekend. The Florida State University Flying High Circus has taken up residence at the beach every summer since 1961. During the summer, the circus conducts a recreation pro-

gram and performs seven shows weekly under the big top adjacent to the beach.

Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center

The Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center, named after the founder of Days Inns of America, Inc., opened to the public on September 25, 1988. Mrs. Deen Day Sanders, Cecil Day's wife, provided the initial funding for the center. In 2004, the center earned a LEED certification. In 2005, the Day Butterfly Center underwent a $2 million renovation to accommodate more visitors. The conservatory is maintained at approximately 80ºF and 74% relative humidity. The center has 1,000 butterflies representing more than 50 species. The butterflies are received in the pupa stage (or chrysalis) from Malaysia, the Philippines, and Central and South America. Because the butterflies are considered to be invasive species, an inward blast of air is shot by a machine at the doorway to prevent any butterfly breakouts.

Golf Courses

As of 2011, Callaway Gardens has two golf courses in operation. Lake View golf course was opened on May 21, 1952, the same day the gardens opened. The Mountain View golf course, designed in 1965, hosted the Buick Challenge from 1991 to 2002. In 2001, Buick pulled its sponsorship of the tournament because of low attendance and little network coverage. A third golf course, Gardens View golf course, was opened in 1969 but was closed in 2002.

Callaway Brothers Azalea Bowl

This 40-acre garden is home to more than 3,000 native and hybrid azaleas, which explode into a colorful palette of pinks, reds, lavendars, and whites each spring. Additional

plantings include 2,000 trees and shrubs that provide an array of foliage and blooms throughout the year. With wide walking paths that crisscross the hillside gardens, the Callaway Brothers Azalea Bowl is a delightful spot for a leisurely stroll in any season. A gazebo overlooking Falls Creek Lake is an ideal resting spot from which to drink in the picture-postcard beauty.

Spring Burst of Color

The Overlook Azalea Garden is steeped in Callaway history, having been planted under the direction of co-founder Virginia Hand Callaway with the help of azalea expert Fred Galle. It is surely one of the most beautiful places on Earth each spring, when thousands of azaleas bear vibrant blooms and visitors flock here to gaze in wonder at the kaleidoscope of natural color. At the top of the garden is the Overlook Pavilion, host site to a number of events throughout the year and a great spot to picnic while enjoying the splendid views.

Seasonal Events

Callaway Gardens hosts several seasonal events. On Memorial weekend, the gardens host the Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament. Daily Dog Walking Promotes Enhanced Health HERE’S A KEY FACT that most dog owners may be surprised to learn: Dogs left alone spend 80% of their time resting, even if they have access to your yard. This means most dogs aren’t getting the exercise needed to promote and maintain their health. With most of us working 10+ hours daily, is it really such a surprise? There simply aren’t enough hours in our days. That’s where an experienced and dependable dog walking service like Waggy Tails Pet Sitting + Dog Walking comes in! Here are five reasons we believe hiring a dog walker is incredibly important:

1. Health • Your dog’s health depends on you! Consistent exercise can reduce the risk of your dog developing arthritis and other lifethreatening, expensive illnesses. 2. Behavior • A well exercised dog is a well behaved dog! Your dog will have calmer behavior at home and be less inclined to bark, chew, bite, and use the bathroom indoors. 3. Stimulation • Avoid the guilt of leaving your dog alone all day long. Think about how bored your dog must be! A dog walker can break

up the monotony of the day, offering the stimulation and socialization that is likely the highlight of your dog’s day. 4. Save Time • Avoid spending your lunch hour rushing home to let out your dog. Don’t worry if you need to stay late after work or want to go out to eat. By using a professional dog walker, you’ll free up your schedule. 5. Peace of Mind • Your dog will have already developed a friendship with an experienced dog walker who can also provide pet sitting visits when you travel for business or vacation. So why not let Waggy Tails help you in your efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle for your best friend?

Philanthropy in Bloom

Connecting Art with Charity PRING HAS finally arrived in Knoxville, and with it comes many beautiful, blooming gardens. One fabulous garden, at the home of Sherri Lee, will come alive on June 13th as the site of the 6th annual Art in the Garden, a special event benefitting Random Acts of Flowers in Knoxville. Guests will have to opportunity to experience art like never before. The event will feature exceptional art from local artisans, with several featured artists demonstrating their craft throughout the evening. There will be a new addition to the featured artist line-up this year: two talented child artists. The pieces created by all of the featured artists will be available for purchase at the end of the evening as part of the live auction, in addition to donated pieces available throughout the evening during the silent auction. Art in the Garden started in 2009 as an event where Random Acts of Flowers could connect great art, food, and entertainment with their special philanthropy. All proceeds go toward the charity’s mission of recycling flowers to deliver smiles and improve mental health. Volunteers collect donated flowers from weddings, memorial services, florists, special events, grocery stores, and churches to recycle and repurpose them into beautiful bouquets for delivery to patients in area hospitals, senior care facilities, and hospice care centers. “Each week Random Acts of Flowers creates beautiful bouquets that bring individuals joy in our area,” said Sandra Heinig, Vice President at Ackermann PR. “Art in the Garden provides the community a chance to give to this organization by attending or sponsoring Art in the Garden. As event co-chair with Chelly Clayton, we are proud to be a part of this annual affair that expands Random Acts of Flowers’ impact on the Knoxville community.” For more information, to purchase tickets, or to learn about becoming a sponsor, call 865-633-9082 or visit www.RAFKnoxville.org.

Don’t be confused by all of the styles you’ll see this season; we’re here to help you break it all down into which bottom you’ll put with the top of your choice. Tunic tops are still strong this season (and into fall as well!). Pair these with either a straight leg pant or the ever-popular legging… these pieces present a “flowy” feel, covering at least the derriere and preferably ending at mid-thigh. The straight leg can be worn with most every style jacket or shirt and is showing up in mainly ankle pants for spring. Although cropped pants are still out there, they bring a more casual look Straight leg full length to your wardrobe than the

ankle, which can accent beautifully the fabulous shoes for spring. The flared-leg or boot cut pant can be worked wonderfully into your spring/summer wardrobe. Top them off with a crisp white shirt, add a pop of color with an infinity scarf, and you’re ready to go!

Fashion

You’ll find lots of palazzo pants for this season, primarily in graphic, chevron, and bold, bright prints. Again, flowy in feel and fun to wear! Top off your palazzos with most any style, and enjoy the ease of today’s fashions. Whatever pant style you choose, make your own fashion statement by choosing the one that’s right for your body type and personality. Springtime is a time of fun in fashion… of independent thinking and pushing your imagination! Be adventurous, personalize your look, and remember the magic of fashion! Happy shopping!

Hosting a Bridal,Baby or Graduation Party? CLEVER FOOD SHORTCUTS BIG ON TASTE, LOW ON STRESS

It’s that time of year - bridal showers, baby showers, and graduation parties are likely dotting your calendar. If you’re the lucky host of one of these milestone events, you might feel excitement paired with a bit of trepidation as you start the party-planning process. The good news is there are some simple ways to be the “hostess with the mostest” and limit stress at the same time.

1. MAKE A PLAN

Sit down and brainstorm your ideas. Record them on paper or electronically. Once you have a list of themes, décor, food, and activities, you can start narrowing your options down to what really aligns with the guest of honor’s tastes and preferences. Remember, you want the party to reflect you since you’re the host, but make sure it speaks to the person whom the party is being hosted for.

2. ACCEPT HELP

Planning a party can be time-consuming and costly. If the mother of the bride or best friend of the mother-to-be offers to help, don’t turn her away. The best way to ensure you get the help you need and no one oversteps boundaries is to assign specific tasks. For example, assign someone to make a dessert, plan an activity, or stop at the store to pick up colored napkins and cutlery.

3. DETERMINE A MENU

The warmer months beg for fresh party fare, so be sure to highlight healthy foods and everyday favorites in your menu. Salads, fresh veggies, and fruit are light and versatile. Furthermore, you can highlight the best of your region’s seasonal produce by visiting your local co-op or farmers’ market to select items that were locally grown and made.

4. THINK DIPS

With your menu focused on lighter, fresh fare, you need to add extras to complement those items, and nothing works better than a classic variety of dips. Options include fruit dip and guacamole.

28

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2014

5. DECIDE ON DRINKS

Make sure you provide a variety of drink options for guests, especially if you’re hosting your event outdoors. Always stock water, but be sure to add other beverages to your menu also. For example, lemonade and sweet tea is perfect for afternoon parties. A popular trend is to select a specialized drink to serve - for example, you might serve pink rose tea for the gal expecting a baby girl or create a tropical concoction for your friend who will be honeymooning in Hawaii. For recent graduates, you can’t go wrong with fruit punch in the school’s color. No matter the type of party you are hosting, a few trendy touches and clever food shortcuts will wow guests and keep them raving long after it has ended. Above all else, have fun and enjoy these special moments with loved ones, because the memories will last a lifetime.

Mother’s Day – May 11th

Nobody needs to be reminded of Mother’s Day. But if you want to avoid the mundane selection of gifts that you have had to settle for in the past, I have the perfect solution for you – not to mention a day out of the house.

I WOULD LIKE TO personally invite you to

visit a very special place some people refer to as an enchanted cottage in historic Wears Valley that we call Honeysuckle Rose Boutique. A joint creation and labor of love with my brother, Joe Headrick, Honeysuckle Rose Boutique was designed to offer shoppers that were tired of the same old routine a one-of-a-kind shopping experience unlike that which awaits most of us today. We don’t merely head to market to buy the same items you’ll find in every other gift shop and big box store. You know, the feeling you often experience after visiting numerous shops where you seem to discover the same choices. We invest considerable time visiting with our customers to learn about their likes and dislikes. While trends are important, they’re not more important than our individual customers’ unique preferences. At Honeysuckle Rose Boutique, our merchandise selection is driven by our customers and not the industry’s supplies. With less than six weeks remaining until Mother’s Day, we are sure to have just the right gift for your mom. Whether she is fashion conscious, enjoys gourmet cooking, or has a passion for showcasing her home’s interior design, we’re sure to have a selection of gifts we’re confident will surprise you and delight your mom. Choose from our wide selection in our body & bath, handbags & accessories, home décor, or gourmet food areas. Each is a boutique within a boutique. If you think all we do is Mother’s Day, you’ll discover that Honeysuckle Rose Boutique is perfect for every occasion, not to mention Father’s Day, which is June 15th. So avoid the mundane with a special trip to an enchanted place in historic Wears Valley, Honeysuckle Rose Boutique. Also, don’t forget to ask about our Preferred Customer Card.

Fashion

Trompe l’oeil HIS wonderful French expression need not be relegated to paintings or murals. Misleading or deceiving the senses, creating an illusion, or, literally, “tricking the eye” is an art in itself. (In East Tennessee, it’s called camouflage!) There are certainly tricks for the eye to be shared in fashion: » When wearing a dress or skirt, a nude colored shoe elongates the leg. If you are concerned about heavy calves or thick ankles, buy a nude shoe. The illusion is that your leg is longer and slimmer. Avoid ankle straps, shoes that come up high on the rise of the foot, and wide heeled shoes. » Shorter legs look longer with high wasted pants and cropped jackets. » If you have a sagging neck, don’t think a turtleneck is your friend, nor your salvation. It’s neither! A v-neck top will lighten your face and make you appear younger. Loosely draped scarves will better hide the imperfections you see.

» A flabby upper arm (aka “batwings”) is a concern expressed by many women. You can still wear sleeveless, but add a loose summer shrug or three-quarter length lightweight cardigan. Billowy sleeves in gauze, voile, or any sheer fabrication will take the eye away from your upper arm. » If you are “less than endowed,” a top with ruffles on the bodice or a top with distinctive patterns will enhance your chest. A

standout necklace will also put the emphasis where it should be. If you are “over endowed,” keep the top simple, and look for styles with an interesting shoulder, sleeve, or hemline. Be sure to put on some fabulous earrings, too, to draw the eye to your face. » A “muffin top” can be downplayed with mid-rise, well-fitting pants and, believe it or not, a belt. Belts can be your friend. » If too ample hips and rear are the perceived issue, buy pants and jeans that are slightly flared at the bottom. Stick to simple pockets on the derriere, too. At Next To New, we will find the clothes to downplay your worries and enhance your attributes. We are very skilled at tricking the eye! Come see us soon!

Think Twice Before Shaving

THERE IS NO such thing as a “totally” non-

shedding dog. All dogs shed at least a little, as do humans. Longhaired dogs may appear to shed more, but it is really just the length of their hair that creates that illusion. Many dog owners take their dogs to groomers during the spring and summer months to shave them down, thinking it will make them much cooler and prevent shedding. This may be a mistake. Unfortunately, shaving can actually harm the dog more than doing it any good. Why? • Shaved dogs will become hotter rather

than cooler, as they have lost their protective insulation. • Shaved or close trimmed dogs who live in air conditioned homes can become chilled easily. • Dogs who are shaved have a tendency to become sunburned. • More bugs and insects will attack a dog who is shaved, as it has no hair to protect it from bug bites. • A dog ’s hair protects it from injuries when running through brush and other obstacles outside. • Keeping the dog shaved throughout the summer does not prepare them for the coolness of the fall, as their hair will not grow back in time. Watch for next month’s article as we discuss more basic steps to help eliminate the hair bunny issues in your home. To discuss managing shedding problems, visit John, the groomer at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits.

THOMPSON-BOLING ARENA

Cirque du Soleil is pleased to announce that its newest arena show, Varekai, will perform in Knoxville for seven performances only. After 11 years of touring the world under the blue and yellow Big Top, Varekai will begin a new adventure touring the world in arenas worldwide and in some markets never visited before! About Varekai

Deep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary world – a world where something else is possible. A world called Varekai. The sky lets go a soli-

tary young man, and the story of Varekai begins. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world imbued with fantastical creatures, a young man takes flight in an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of pure and undiluted possibility, begins an inspired incantation to a life rediscovered and to a newly found wonder in the mysteries of the world and the mind. Directed by Dominic Champagne, this production pays tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition, and to those who quest with infinite passion along the path that leads to Varekai.

Others make their outdoor living areas more enjoyable by reducing their direct exposure to the sun. It’s like adding an outdoor room! Whatever the reason, many homeowners are confused by the large selection of retractable awnings they have to select from and the many conflicting claims made by manufacturers and distributors. I feel that I offer a rather unique perspective of the retractable awning industry that may be of benefit to you should you be considering a retractable awning. At Camel Custom Canvas Shop, we have been manufacturing and installing custom-made retractable awnings for 30 years. All we purchase is the fabric and the hardware. We manufacture our retractable awnings one at a time to meet the individual needs of each of our customers. We do not offer a one-size-fits-all approach. Several years ago I investigated the different retractable awning options that were available to homeowners and actually decided to become a distributor for one of the better nationally known retractable awning companies. I was amazed by their national advertising campaigns and the potential for new business that this opportunity presented. But my experiences with this brand of retractable awnings led me to discontinue my distributorship at the end of its term. I discovered that the promised savings to the homeowner was often elusive. Homeowners were often offered limited options and upgrades, frequently resulting in these retractable awnings costing far more than other higher quality, custom-made retractable awnings that were available. I also discovered that these companies typically had full-time representatives whose only job was to handle homeowner complaints and quality related issues. Conversely, in our 30 years of experience, we have only had to replace four retractable awnings. Our superior quality, attention to detail, professional installation, and after-the-sale service has produced a level of customer satisfaction that has exceeded most homeowners’ expectations. Considering a retractable awning? Give Camel Custom Canvas Shop a call today!

April in the Garden THE TEMPERATURE may

fluctuate and snow may still fall, but spring is in the air! I know this because my yard tells me every morning. I see it in the daffodils that have been opening their buds even with the ice and snow. I see it in the lenten roses that are blooming so gloriously right now. I see it in the cheerful yellow of my forsythia. I see it in the birds that are flocking to the feeders, and I hear it in the sound of peepers (frogs) when I walk the dogs. Spring is coming, and I can hardly wait! While we anxiously wait, there are many things we can do to occupy our time: ›› Take a deep breath and repeat after me: average last frost is April 19. That means you need to slow down and not get in such a rush to get annuals and vegetables in the ground. If you plant them too early, they refuse to grow because they don’t like to be cold. You can, however, get your flower and veggie beds ready for planting by adding

manure, peat, compost, or topsoil. You can also start seeds indoors. ›› I’m sure you’ve noticed the weeds springing up in your lawn and beds. If you’re using a weed killer like Roundup, read the directions. Make sure it’s warm enough for it to work, and don’t spray it on a windy day unless you want to replace your neighbors’ shrubs. Preen or another pre-emergent herbicide applied now will keep the weed population down in the upcoming months. If you want to go about your weeding the old fashioned way, ball weeders and hula hoes will make it easier. ›› Please don’t apply Preen or another pre-emergent to beds in which you’re going to sow seeds! Preen doesn’t know a weed seed from a flower or vegetable seed and will keep any from germinating. ›› If you have an irresistible urge to plant something, this is a great time to plant trees and shrubs. The ground is moist and

starting to warm up, and plants have time to establish a good root system before it gets hot. ›› You can still prune your trees and shrubs. For evergreens, cut out all dead, diseased, and straggly growth, but don’t go down below the foliage to the bare wood. Gentle shaping is best. Deciduous pruning will depend on the tree or shrub in question. Don’t prune spring flowering plants until they’ve finished blooming, or they’ll be finished before they ever start! Summer blooming shrubs (roses, butterfly bushes, crepe myrtles, etc.) can be pruned now, but please do it carefully. Call if you have questions. ›› You can prune semi-woody perennials like Artemisia, lavender, and careopteris. ›› This is a good time to add fertilizer to your trees and shrubs if you’re using an organic product like Hollytone. If you’re using non-organics, wait until later in the month, because they cause a faster response, and we’re not out of frost danger. ›› Start watching for problem insects, but remember that there are lots of little fellows out there that do good work. Our honeybees are struggling, and we need to be careful how and what we spray. In general, use the least toxic product first, spray at dusk, and use systemic products if the organics don’t fix your problem. ›› You also need to begin watching for signs of fungus. The damp weather hasn’t done us any favors in that area. Some plants, like roses, should be treated with a systemic fungicide on a monthly basis to prevent damage. ›› Don’t cut back the foliage of spring flowering bulbs like daffodils until after they turn yellow. They have to store up energy for next year’s blooms. It will help if you apply a fertilizer like Bulb Tone to the plant. ›› If you planted cool season veggies, you should be able to harvest them now. You can still plant them if you’re getting a late start or want a second harvest. ›› Stake tall perennials and cage peonies when they’re still small. You can do it later, but it’s harder after they get bushy. ›› Houseplants will appreciate a little attention this month. Clean them up, check for insects, repot if necessary, and fertilize. Pinching off new growth will help leggy plants fill out. ›› Birds are starting to migrate, so keep your feeders full. Birdbaths are also a welcome treat this time of year. Birds appreciate a drink and a splash while traveling. That’s all for this month. If you have questions, please give us a call or stop by. We’re getting shipments in almost every day this time of year, so there’s always something new to help make your garden beautiful!

UT GARDENS PLANT OF THE MONTH

Toadshade Trillium

OU KNOW spring is upon us when you see the foliage of trillium pushing through the ground. Along with other spring ephemerals like bloodroot and Virginia bluebells, trillium provides hope after a long winter. There are more than 30 species of trillium native to the U.S. One of the more common species in Tennessee is trillium sessile. Its common names include toadshade, toad trillium, sessile trillium, and red trillium. The height of the plants ranges from five to 12 inches, and the single stalk is topped with a symmetrical whorl of three leaves. The oval leaves average two to four inches long with the color and patterns varying widely from solid green to a mottled light and dark green or even chocolate or a somewhat silver color. As the foliage matures, the mottling fades. In the center of the whorled leaves, the Photo by M. Emery, courtesy of UTIA

stalk-less flower is produced. Narrow oneinch to two-inch tall petals point skyward and are skirted by three smaller sepals that protrude at a 45 degree angle. Both petals and sepals can range in color from reddish-brown and maroon to greenish yellow. Usually found growing in the wild in moist, rich, deciduous woodlands, it can also be found in somewhat chalky, limey soils. In the garden, toadshade performs best in shady to partly shady locations in moist soils abundant with organic matter. It is drought tolerant but will go dormant earlier in the season when dry. It is generally recommended that trillium be divided while dormant, but I have been successful through the years dividing clumps of trillium sessile in my garden just as they emerge in the spring. I dig a section, being careful to keep the soil intact and to replant right away. It’s worth noting that plants should never be dug from the wild unless the area is threatened by construction. Your best sources are

specialty nurseries that propagate their own stock or a friend with an established stand in their landscape. Toadshade trillium mixes well with other spring wildflowers and ferns in a woodland garden. Over time it will spread by rhizomes to form a beautiful stand. It can be seen growing in the UT Gardens locations in Knoxville and Jackson. Jason Reeves is a research horticulturist with the University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit http://utgardens.tennessee.edu. April 2014 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

SPRING COLOR EXPLODES

at Ijams Nature Center “APRIL COME SHE WILL,” SANG SIMO N & GARF UNKE L.

AFTER THE WINTER we just survived,

April is a blessed change. By the Ijams calendar, spring begins in March, but it explodes in April. The trees leaf out, wildflowers fill the woodlands, and vibrant birds sally forth in song. Green, blue, pink, yellow, red… everything is alive again and in living color.

There are a lot of special events happening this month:

RIVER RESCUE: For 25 years, Ijams has organized a spring cleanup of public shorelines along the Tennessee River from the nature center downstream to Ft. Loudoun Dam, plus sites along the Clinch River. Ijams’ own Peg Beute has overseen the effort for years. In the past, more than 600 volunteers annually have worked to remove litter from almost 40 public locations. This year’s River Rescue is Saturday, April 5. To volunteer, call Sarah at Ijams at 865-577-4717, ext. 124. SPRING NATIVE PLANT SALE: Are you look-

ing for a hard-to-find native wildflower, tree, or shrub? Then check out the Spring Native Plant Sale at Ijams on Saturday, April 26. A

tradition for years, it’s a great way to get your gardening juices flowing. For more information, visit www.ijams.org/signature-events/ plant-sales.

OUTDOOR KNOXFEST: Organized by the Legacy Parks Foundation, it’s a weekend of hiking, biking, water-related, and other outdoor activities – something for every age group – on Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27. Some happen at Ijams. For a complete list of all events, visit www.outdoor knoxville.com/outdoorknoxfest. KNOX EARTHFEST:

Ijams and the Water Quality Forum will be hosting the beverage booth at the 15th annual Knox EarthFest on Saturday, April 26, at World’s Fair Park.

IJAMS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS:

The school buses will be pulling in almost daily. Field trips fill the weekdays at the nature center. In 2014, Ijams is celebrating its 91st year of nature-related programs for kids. Not a school student? Then the education staff has several special programs planned in April for all ages. By tradition, the full moon of April is known as the Pink Moon, perhaps because of all the wildflowers of that color in bloom. Educator Sabrina DeVault will be hosting a Pink Full Moon Happy Hour on Tuesday, April 15. Green thumb Peg Beute will be hosting a “vertical” gardening workshop, teaching how to garden in a confined space, on Saturday, April 12. Dr. Louise Conrad, the Ijams veterinarian, will be hosting a Walk n’ Wag doggie saunter on Saturday, April 19. It’s a good way to

get advice about your favorite canine from a trained vet. I will be leading a migratory bird hike on Friday, April 4, a South Loop Piece-byPiece hike on Saturday, April 12, and the first canoe trip of the season on Saturday, April 19. Saturdays also offer Creature Features: public animal programs. For information about any of these programs, including start times, fees, and registration, call 865-577-4717, ext. 110, or visit www.ijams.org/events.

NATURE ALMANAC: The spring ephemeral wildflowers come and go from the woodlands before the canopy leafs out and brings shade to the forest floor. Look for trout lily, mayapple, and several species of trillium and violet at the Homesite and along the Discovery Trails. In the ponds, small chorus frogs and spring peepers will be calling. Migratory birds (tanagers, warblers, vireos, grosbeaks) will stop by for awhile to fatten up on caterpillars in the trees before they move on to environs farther north or in the Smokies. Plus, April begins the season of zealous fecundity – birds making other birds – the Ijams annual nesters that include cardinals, wrens, phoebes, gnatcatchers, and swallows busy themselves, claiming territory and constructing nests. The great pageant begins. Hooray for spring! Help Me Help You THE IDEA OF turning our home upside down each spring for a thorough cleaning doesn’t leave most of us jumping for joy. And, it’s about as far removed from today’s lifestyles as sending our sons to school in a pair of overalls with a lunch pail. Our modern lives no longer provide the rhythm of an old-fashioned cleaning marathon. My wife, Christina, is thankful for that change in tradition. As a mom, her days are filled with errands, appointments, cooking, homework, and activities for the kids. As much as a spotless home sounds appealing, with her busy schedule she can’t achieve that on her own. My wife often jokes that our home may not be as neat and organized, but thanks to our company, Surface Doc, inc., at least it’s “clean.” About twice a year, on a slow work day, the boys and I will give our own home the love and attention we at Surface Doc give our clients. As a business owner of Surface Doc, inc., “spring cleaning” reminds me of my favorite line from Jerry Maguire, “Help me help you.” Even if you are in your home each day caring for it, sometimes you need a little help. We at Surface Doc have the tools to get your

tile & grout

tile and grout, carpet, concrete, and most anything else deep down clean and sanitized and ready for nominal maintenance. Once we help you get your home sparkling clean, it’s much easier to keep it clean.

Here’s how we do it. First, we pre-spray your floor with emulsifier to start the soil breakdown process. Then we use a combination of heat, pressure, and extraction simultaneously to remove all foreign chemicals, grease, build-up, and dirt. The extreme heat breaks down the soil and opens the pores in your floors to remove even deep down build-up. Without the heat and extraction method, one can only penetrate the topmost

layer of your floor. With 3,000 psi and 15 pounds of suction, dirt is literally blasted out of your tile and taken away immediately. Also, we use purified water to leave absolutely no residue. Of course we also deep clean carpet, and our carpet cleaning CO-OWNER technology is the best in the industry. John When we finish, let Fitzwilliam us show you how to maintain all of your floors with ease. I look forward to helping your home reach its finest potential. Open Up Your Living Space BE READY TO LET the outdoors in! The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless ways to have fun right in your own backyard. Yet are people really enjoying their outdoor spaces to the full potential? In most parts of the country, if their outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weatherproof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide an answer to this dilemma. By merging indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy the outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of bugs that come out in the evenings. Large motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, some of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with existing interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to the general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when needing extra shade or insect protection. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.tennesseescreens.com. Screens of East Tennessee

ASK ANY COUPLE and you’ll discover that bedroom battles are most often caused by stress, poor communication, or just plain stubbornness. The solution? Separate bedrooms? Separate dressing rooms? And, while you’re at it, why not separate wings entirely? The separate bedroom concept is gaining popularity among many couples. More clients are requesting separate but equal master bedrooms in new homes. It’s not so far-fetched. Today’s homes are increasingly being designed with

Separate bathrooms, dressing rooms, and offices are also in increasing demand. People are starting to become practical and open about separate spaces. It doesn’t say anything about the strength of their marriage. When people are happy and secure, they can each go in their own direction, and they know what works and what doesn’t work. Greet spring by looking at your home from a fresh perspective. Here are a few tips: 1. Spring clean! Clear up the clutter, and wash your windows! 2. Bring some of the outside in. Brighten up an empty vase with fresh spring tulips clumped together in a trumpet vase for a classic but casual feel!

3. Add some bright colored floral pillows to a chair or sofa, and change out your dark area rug for a lighter colored one with an updated, fresh design.

4. Use cotton, silk, or linen draperies to lighten the feel and look of your window treatments. 5. Lastly, paint! I always tell clients that picking a paint color last gives you the best match once your room’s design is in place. Also, if you are looking for inspiration to get you started, visit the 2014 Symphony Showhouse this month to see all the latest in design, and see the powder room that I designed! Sandy Kozar is an Interior Designer and owner of Decorating Den Interiors of Knoxville. Sandy has been featured on HGTV, as well as won awards for her designs. Sandy is available to speak to your group on various decorating subjects.

Storage Stacks Up in Importance for Renovations and Homebuyers Home improvement is more than putting up sheetrock, painting, and new light fixtures. It’s about making a home more functional, and that means maximizing storage space.

A

CCORDING TO last year’s

Houzz & Home Survey, almost half of homeowners, 42%, cited the need for improving storage and efficiency as a reason for renovation projects. Starting in 1996, his group released a series of five records on Warner Bros. entitled The Art of the Trio. During that same period, Mehldau also released a solo piano recording entitled Elegiac Cycle and a record called Places that included both solo piano and trio songs. Elegiac Cycle

Winterize Your Home’s Plumbing

A

LTHOUGH SPRING HAS offi-

cially arrived, now is the perfect time to winterize and protect your home from next winter’s freezing temperatures. This winter, our staff of master plumbers often worked seven days a week, often until late in the night to repair homes just like yours from broken water pipes that wreaked havoc on many thousands of area families. Drywall ceilings collapsed, hardwood floors buckled, many priceless heirlooms were destroyed, and lives altered as many families were forced to find alternative living arrangements. Sadly, most of what we observed was the result of damage that could have been prevented. Poor design and installation were responsible for most of the burst water pipes that occurred from the series of cold snaps we experienced. Additionally, cold temperatures increase our use of hot water and the demands we place on our home’s water heater. Many of you discovered the hard way that a cold shower isn’t as refreshing as you would have believed. If you experienced a plumbing related problem last winter or just want to avoid one next winter, now is the perfect time for My Plumber and its staff of trained and experienced master plumbers to conduct a thorough evaluation of your home’s plumbing system. You’ll have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your home’s system doesn’t require any remedial work or, if it does, you’ve corrected any deficiencies and headed off any potential flooding problems. A small investment today can save you tens of thousands of dollars in damages next winter. Also, don’t think that the problems I’ve described are limited to older homes. We’ve seen brand new, custom built homes with burst water pipes this winter. While you’re at it, why not let My Plumber install an affordable, tankless water heater that can deliver an inexhaustible supply of water while actually reducing your home’s energy costs? So think spring, but prepare now for next winter’s freezing temperatures.

Discover Healthy Indoor Air

A HEALTHY INDOOR environment is important to you and your family. This includes controlling air contaminants like dust mites, molds, fungi, spores, pollen, bacteria, and viruses, which can cause severe health problems, including viral and bacterial infections, allergies, hay fever, asthma, and runny noses. These contaminants thrive in the same warm and moderately humid environments that we do. Much of this moisture in our home is generated from the atmosphere of below grade sections such as your untreated crawlspace and basement, which are a perfect breeding ground for these invisible invaders. Because more than 50% of the air you breathe in your home comes from your crawlspace, contaminants like dust mites are free to enter your home. Dust mites and their waste products are the most common allergens found indoors as they are attracted to damp basements and crawlspaces. Effective mite control requires that relative humidity be maintained below 50%, and that’s why H2OUT Waterproofing recommends encapsulation. The H2OUT Waterproofing Encapsulation system is a proven method to control moisture in crawlspaces and effectively reduce dust mite and other contaminant populations. The populations of dust mites, mold, and mildew can be greatly reduced if your home’s relative humidity can be lowered and sustained below 50%. Here are ways that H2OUT Waterproofing can do that for you: » Excessive moisture like standing water requires a waterproofing system to collect and remove the water from the home. A comprehensive inspection from an H2OUT Waterproofing licensed contractor will help determine if this is necessary. » An H2OUT Waterproofing Encapsulation system creates a sealed protective barrier from moisture, contaminants, and soil gases. » Sealing vents and openings in the crawlspace keeps moisture out and the dry in. We also make sure that the crawlspace door is properly sealed as a part of every H2OUT Waterproofing Encapsulation system. » H2OUT Waterproofing offers the right size dehumidifier, which, when used with a hygrometer, allows you to monitor your crawlspace moisture levels from the living area of your home. H2OUT Waterproofing’s approach to moisture level reduction has resulted in hundreds of satisfied homeowners throughout East Tennessee. Call today for a free, no obligation home consultation with an H2OUT Waterproofing licensed contractor today. H2OUT Waterproofing

THIS WINTER HAS BEEN one to remember.

Record cold temperatures and above average snowfalls have all of us looking forward to the promise of spring and summer and warmer temperature. But winter has also taken a toll on both your home’s fine rugs and carpeting. Family members and their pets have been tracking in snow, ice, salt, sand, residue – you name it – on the bottom of their shoes and paws all winter long. Combined, these elements can permanently damage your home’s Oriental rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting, dramatically shortening their life expectancy.

With Spring in East Tennessee Comes Bugs! Termites

Each year in the United States, termites cause more damage to our homes and businesses than fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods combined. They’re tough, determined, and highly efficient. Eastern subterranean termites live in colonies deep beneath the soil. They are usually not detected by homeowners until they swarm in early spring. By then they have usually done some degree of damage. Protect your home with a Termidor Termite Treatment.

Ants

Ants are very social and the most abundant insect infesting our homes and yards. They are everywhere and eat almost anything. In most cases, ants are merely a nuisance, but some species can cause damage. Damage includes contaminating food, destroying seeds and plants, and, in the case of carpenter ants, possible structure damage to homes. Fire ants are also fast becoming more common in the south and can produce a painful sting and injuries that are sometimes fatal in children, senior citizens, and small animals. Monthly and quarterly pest control is available.

“Sandy”is Official

UT McClung Museum Sculpture “Sandy” Poised to Become Official State Artifact ANDY, A PREHISTORIC Native

American sandstone statue of a kneeling male figure that is part of the permanent collections at the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is set to become the official artifact of the state of Tennessee. The Tennessee Legislature recently passed a bill to make the designation, which is awaiting the governor’s signature. “The McClung Museum is thrilled to receive this recognition of Sandy and our museum,” said Jeff Chapman, McClung Museum Director. “Sandy is such an important example of prehistoric Native American art, and we are proud to be the stewards of this piece of Tennessee history.” Sandy is on permanent display in the McClung Museum’s “Archaeology and the Native Peoples of Tennessee” exhibit, which tells the story of 15,000 years of Native American history in the state. Sandy was found in 1939 with a companion female statue at a farm in Wilson County at the Sellars archaeological site. The 18-inch statue was carved between 1000 and 1350 A.D. and is from the Mississippian Period. UT purchased both prehistoric statues in

1940. They are thought to represent chiefly ancestors from which this prehistoric community originated. Similar stone statuary pairs have been found across the South and Midwest at large Mississippian period town sites, but the McClung’s are particularly noted for their realism and workmanship. Sandy has been featured in several scientific and popular publications, including a 1941 issue of TIME magazine and as a United States postal stamp celebrating the opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in 2004. It was part of the Art Institute of Chicago’s exhibit “Hero, Hawk, and Open Hand” in 2004 and 2005, which recognized masterpieces of prehistoric Native American art. Sandy also was featured in the 1992 exhibition “Tresors du Nouveau Monde” at the Musees Royaux d’Art et d’Histoire in Brussels, Belgium. Exhibits at the McClung Museum showcase the geologic, historic, and artistic past of Tennessee, as well as cultures from around the globe. The McClung Museum is located at 1327 Circle Park Drive. Museum admission is free, and hours are 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 pm on Sunday. To learn more about the McClung Museum and its exhibits, visit http://mcclung museum.utk.edu.

Are Your Knox County Property Taxes Too High? IF YOU OWN PROPERTY in Knox County, then you recently paid your property taxes. If you feel that the county’s most recent appraisal does not accurately reflect the current market value of your home and that your property taxes are excessive, then contact Matthew David Barocas, P.C. at 865-288-7877. We can petition the county on your behalf in order to reduce your property taxes for years to come. Property taxes are based on appraisals that were conducted by the county last year. Your property will not be appraised again by the county until 2017; therefore, your taxes for the next three years will continue to be based on the 2013 appraisal. The county may, however, reconsider their 2013 appraisal and the resulting property tax assessment if there is compelling evidence to do so. We are available to discuss your property taxes in light of a number of factors, including any independent appraisals you may have obtained, comparable sales in your area, and whether or not your home is presently for sale on the market. Allow us to assist you to make the strongest case for reconsideration. There is no upfront cost to you. We gather all of the supporting documents and present your case to the Knox County Property Assessor. The timeframe for preparing your case runs through May, and meetings with the Knox County Tax Equalization Board must take place in June. You must act soon to take advantage of this opportunity. In addition, feel free to contact us with any other questions you may have concerning real property in Tennessee, including residential and commercial real estate transactions, nonpayment and holdover proceedings, or any other dispute involving real property.

JDRF WALK TO CURE DIABETES APRIL 26 AT WORLD’S FAIR PARK REGISTRATION AT 8:30 AM WALK AT 10 AM THE JDRF WALK to Cure Diabetes is an impactful way

to raise money for critically needed Type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and show your support for the millions of people affected by this serious disease. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas loses the ability to produce insulin – a hormone essential to turning food into energy. It requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure. That’s why JDRF holds more than 200 walks across the country every year to raise money for JDRF – the only global organization with a strategic research plan to end T1D. The JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes has raised more than $1 billion through the hard work and generosity of supporters. Every dollar JDRF directs toward research comes from their donors. So, the more our walkers raise, the closer we get to reaching our goal of a world without T1D. For more information, visit www.jdrf.org.

Preparing for Peace of Mind in Retirement

veryone’s vision for retirement is different for some it involves trips across the globe, while for others it means relocating to a new city or picking up a new hobby. Regardless of what your retirement goals might be, preparing to achieve them financially should include a plan that anticipates both the expected and unexpected events and expenses that may arise before or after leaving the workforce. Planning for retirement is challenging - only 46% of Americans feel certain that they will be able to afford the essential expenses after retirement. Breaking retirement planning down into simple steps can be an easy way for those nearing - or in - retirement to begin planning.

Only 46% of Americans feel certain that they will be able to afford the essential expenses after retirement. 72

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE April 2014

Four fundamental areas to consider: Essentials Covered

The foundation of any retirement strategy, essential expenses includes ongoing necessities such as food, housing, taxes, and some medical expenses. Economic conditions may always be a little uncertain, and, as a result, your goal should be to fund essential expenses with sources of guaranteed or stable income (e.g. social security or a defined benefit plan, among other options).

Lifestyle Goals

In addition to covering the essentials, many people have lifestyle goals they want to pursue such as traveling or learning a new skill or hobby. Developing a strategy that can help cover the expenses that come with these goals can help you feel more confident about achieving them.

Preparation for the Unexpected

Unanticipated events such as a catastrophic medical event or chronic illness, supporting a family member, and loss of a spouse can have a devastating impact on retirement plans and goals. Developing a plan to cover the unexpected can help you navigate these bumps on the way to your financial goals.

Your Legacy Plan

After accounting for essential and anticipated lifestyle expenses and preparing for potential unexpected expenses, create a legacy plan for any of your remaining assets. Having a plan in place for your loved ones and the causes that are important to you is a key part of planning for the future and will give you control of your assets in your golden years. It is important to recognize the possibility that, as you age, your physical and mental health could decline. To help ensure that your assets are used according to your wishes, consider working with an attorney who can advise on and prepare legal documents such as a health care directive and power of attorney. Also make sure your beneficiary designations are up to date and that you begin putting an estate plan in place. It’s never too early - or too late - to start preparing for retirement. Consider working with a financial professional to define and work toward your unique retirement goals.

Business

Turning “What Ifs” into“CanDos” I FREQUENTLY ENGAGE in “what if ” conversations with our advertising partners, where we debate the impact on our own small businesses if we were to adopt the business model of a competitor. Frequently, these competitors have introduced a business model that appears compelling – one that might gain traction, resulting in a competitive advantage. New ideas and initiatives designed to enhance a business’s value proposition can come from many sources, including our competitors. Many entrepreneurs are quick to dismiss a competitor’s business model, justifying instead why their own business model is superior. I witnessed firsthand how the senior executives of one Fortune 500 company summarily dismiss the competitive threat of a new competitive product called “stretch wrap.” Dismissed as a “flash in the pan,” their decision to ignore reality cost them and many hundreds, perhaps thousands, of their devoted employees their jobs. By the time

they accepted their new marketplace reality, the die had been cast, relegating them to the bottom ring on the competitive ladder. Carefully consider your competition’s business model, examining the potential for adopting, and perhaps improving upon, a competitive initiative that will help you advance your company’s value proposition in the minds and eyes of both your existing and prospective customers. When we first launched our companion publication, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we carefully evaluated our competition’s business models and in turn offered advertisers and readers a much greater perceived value than that offered by our competitors. During the early months, we continued to refine our evolving business to gain even further competitive advantages, and in less than one year’s time, we earned the dominant market position. An established company with 10+ years of marketplace experience, our principal competitor ignored early warning signs

and failed to act. My best estimate is that they lost well over 50% of their advertising revenue in just the first year alone. Don’t ignore your competition. It’s disheartening to lose a customer to a competitor. But rather than to attack your former customer’s loyalty, your time would be better invested in understanding why your customer chose your competitor instead of you. If your competition offers a perceived value greater than that offered by your small business, act. Don’t just adopt your competitor’s perceived advantages – improve on them, and then thank them for making you better and providing your customers with a product or service of far greater perceived value.

Time to Pick P’s WITH SPRING FINALLY HERE, it won’t

be long before we see freshly picked produce in fruit stands and farmers’ markets. It’s the most telling sign that the cold weather is finally behind us and the summer heat will soon be bearing down. It’s time to pick P’s. Not from a vine; these P’s are different. They are decisions made from a position of strength. New seasons offer an opportune time for a fresh and bold perspective. A personal inventory will help you see where you are now so you can ensure you’re implementing change that produces growth. What are you excited about in your life? Have you made any changes as a result of a goal? Have you challenged yourself physically or mentally? What is your biggest accomplishment since this time last year? Questions are action packed tools because they require answers. People: Are you surrounding yourself with the right people? Often there are people we need to separate from and others we want to get closer to. Invest your time in people who bring out your best. Limit time with those who create negativity and drama.

Places: Are you going to the right places? Evaluate by looking at your calendar. Where are you spending your time? Is it balanced at work and home? Don’t drift into lost areas where you can’t get back wasted time. Be disciplined and keep track so you can make measurable changes. Unplug every day for a designated amount of time. Play: What are you doing for fun? While we want to have a disciplined approach to managing time, we need productive outlets. What a great time to get outside, exercise, garden, walk, and open your mind beyond the walls that have kept us in most of the cold winter. This is an excellent way to rejuvenate creativity. Path: Many people ask, “How did I get here?” While we long to make a difference, we can’t wait until “someday.” You don’t just end up somewhere; you made decisions that led there. You have to make sure you have an intentional path, which you are pursuing so you can end up at your desired destination. Peace: Everyone longs for peace, but this can be as simple as no longer comparing yourself to others. Often what robs our peace is seeing what others are doing and wondering

why it comes easy for them. Peace comes from a drive towards a bigger purpose, and you have to choose that mindset daily. Be inspired by others, but quit comparing yourself to them. Personal choice is a powerful tool. There are no small decisions. Everything we do merits scrutiny. Use this spring to energize your internal radar by looking back at your accomplishments and assessing your growth. Where have you grown? Your personal power will be equal to your personal discipline. Take charge, get excited, and choose your P’s wisely! Let spring be a season of growth, enthusiasm, and excitement. It’s time to get picking!

Family Life

BY W E N DY JAC K S O N

Importance of Family Values PART OF OUR JOB as parents includes instilling the truths and values we feel are important to us into our children. These are our family values. They’re something that’s generally passed down from one generation to the next. Basically, family values are the philosophy or idea by which we live our lives. Every family needs principles they believe in and uphold. Whatever your family values may be, they’ll be more likely to stick and hold in your children if the following occurs within the family. Feeling of Belonging and Security

Belonging and feeling secure is what family is all about. Everyone in the family should feel loved and accepted simply for being themselves. When this sense of acceptance and belonging is the norm, children will instinctively know they have a foundation that is secure. No matter what may happen out in the world, they know they have a base camp they can return to for love and support. This in turn creates loyalty to the family.

Respect

No matter what your family values may be,

they’ll be less likely to take root over the long haul if disrespect is observed in the family. No matter the age or position of the person in the family, children need to see that respect is shown to everyone. Disrespect includes things such as taking someone’s property without asking, insults, name-calling, invading privacy, and so on. It’s important that parents practice what they preach. Children are observing how we interact with our own siblings and extended family. Sometimes the most loving families can show disrespect toward each other and not realize it. It’s easy to do because we know the love is there. Yet, respect should never be overlooked. When it’s gone, trust, security, and loyalty can often go out the window with it. This can eventually make family values seem meaningless.

What Are Your Family Values?

If you don’t know the answer, or haven’t really thought about it, take some time to think about it. Discover what timeless truths and values you uphold. What do you feel should always remain and be the same no matter what? Regardless of who you’re

around, where you are, or the situation you’re in, what do you carry inside of you that you stand upon and that never changes? This may include spiritual truths, how you view life, time, purpose, relationships, traditions, and things such as honesty, work ethic, etc. Whatever they may be, these are your values. Once you have identified the timeless values you want to teach your children, use day-to-day life situations to point them out. Family values will be different for each family, as each family is unique. Yet, every family needs these truths as guiding principles. These values and truths should work together for the common good of everyone in the family unit. They are meant to unite, guide, and give children a secure foundation upon which they can maneuver, enjoy, and grow in life. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Her work can be found in various print markets, as well as online. She has been writing for Everything Knoxville since its start-up in 2007.

Patience is an Etiquette Virtue OH, IF WE COULD just be patient. Rush, rush, rush... that’s what we’re doing these days. Rushing to school, rushing to work, rushing to the gym, rushing to grab a bite, rushing to do homework, rushing to call a friend, and it goes and goes. I’m exhausted just writing that sentence. Did you know that being patient and slowing down when the time calls for it is a virtuous characteristic? Let me explain and give you a few examples. When we think of a lady or a gentleman, we usually think of someone who is poised, calm, organized, and polite. I know we all know people who go about their lives like their hair is on fire 24/7. I hope this is not us. These are people who run around in a semi or full blown panic mode most of the day. These people make me nervous and contribute to the stress level of those around them. Our children are especially susceptible to feeling overwhelmed when they see mom or dad overwhelmed. Slow down. Even if on the inside, your heart and mind are racing, 74

never let it show. It’s also polite to be patient with others and not rush those you’re with in any way (unless you can’t get your children out of the toy store). For example, it is polite to walk at the pace of the slowest walker in your group. If your family arrives at church and grandma is with you and is an extremely slow walker, it is polite for the whole family to walk at grandma’s speed. But, do so without looking bored, annoyed, or bothered. Enjoy the leisure walk, conversing and enjoying one another’s company. It would be very rude for the children to run ahead and leave grandma far behind. Be patient. It is also polite to eat at the speed of the host or the slowest person at the table. Yes, sometimes people are extremely slow eaters. However, if you remember your manners and remember that you’re trying to help those around you feel valued, then you would never quickly finish your meal only to leave the other person eating alone. It is also very

rude to exit the table while others are still dining. When you do this, you send a very loud and clear message that you’re there for one reason and one reason only – to fill your little (or not so little) belly. Be patient. F i n a l l y, b e m o r e patient with one another’s actions. Remember, if you could see one another’s intentions more than their actions, you would probably be much more forgiving and understanding. Be patient. We’re all here to learn and grow. Hopefully each day we become a little better than we were yesterday.

Fat Reduction That Fits WITH SPRING and summer just around

the corner, many of us start thinking about how we are going to look in our warm weather wardrobes. Frequently, unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically proven, non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape. If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device that utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently

destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller” is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines, with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour, and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no post-treatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other non-invasive body contouring devices that can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While

Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA in 2011, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, tumescent microcannular liposuction may be the answer. This in-office, minimally invasive procedure, which utilizes only local anesthesia, was pioneered by a dermatologist in 1985 and is now considered the worldwide standard for liposuction. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are two well-known devices that have been cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). These devices serve as an enhancement to tumescent microcannular liposuction, promoting easier fat removal and better skin contraction. After SmartLipo or SlimLipo, most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated. The neck, arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with

these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Even though fat is permanently destroyed, if a patient gains weight, the fat must go somewhere, and it probably won’t go where you want it to.
