From the Publisher HERE WE ARE in the midst of the summer season. It’s time to plan for backyard picnics, lazy days on the lake, hikes in the mountains, and the family vacation. Friends and relatives might consider visiting East Tennessee for their summer fun, too. I remember as a family growing up in Wisconsin how we looked forward to our summer vacation. Our annual trip was a ride up to Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and my family rented a cabin on one of the great Wisconsin lakes. That week spent fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, and just plain laying in the sun being lazy was the best time for us as kids. There was no television at these cabins, so evenings were spent around a campfire or sitting on the dock enjoying the cool breeze, listening to the frogs, and

watching the fish jump. I remember one year we had a family in the cabin next to us that was from Chicago, and all the kids got along great as did the adults. It was the best time we had, and we hated to see it all end. I treasure those memories of simple family vacations. Is it time for your summer vacation? There’s plenty to do and see right here in East Tennessee that only involves short day trips like our Smoky Mountains. Or maybe check out the other top family oriented National Parks in the United States, which would make a great road trip. Or head on up to my home state of Wisconsin, and spend some time at the Dells, or rent a cabin on one of the many lakes and create your own family memories. July is a summer month packed with outdoor activities for everyone. Don’t miss the fun! Get out and enjoy PUBLISHER + EDITOR IN CHIEF summer!

lungs and improve their function – is a routine activity after most surgeries. Doing these exercises before surgery can help strengthen your lungs so you’re less likely to develop pneumonia. ›› CONTROL YOUR BLOOD SUGAR: People with diabetes whose blood sugar (glucose) is not controlled are more likely to suffer potentially fatal complications following surgery. If you have diabetes, make sure your blood sugar is controlled. If you don’t, your immune system may be weaker, making you more vulnerable to pneumonia and other infections. Controlling your blood sugar will help you heal faster, and you’ll likely spend less time recovering in the hospital.

SHAPE UP FOR SURGERY TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH, SAFETY, AND OUTCOME MORE THAN 50 million surgeries occur every year, and patient safety is always the top priority for surgeons or physician anesthesiologists involved in medical care. If you’re scheduled for surgery and have weeks or even months to prepare, important actions to improve your health, such as exercising and eating right, can help make surgery as safe as possible. They will also decrease your chances of complications and help you get back on your feet faster. “Surgery is usually the solution to a problem, whether to replace a painful knee or repair a hernia, but there are always risks,” says Dr. Jane C.K. Fitch, president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). “Physician anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other medical specialists work with patients before, during, and after surgery to help ensure a successful outcome. Patients can take control of their own health by having critical conversations with their physicians and getting healthy before surgery.” So, what can you do to get yourself in shape for surgery? The ASA suggests patients follow these tips: 8

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2014

›› EAT HEALTHY: Adjusting your diet to include healthier choices in the weeks leading up to your surgery can help you become stronger and recover quicker. If you have a loss of appetite or recently lost weight without trying, be sure to tell your doctor, who might suggest you see a registered dietitian. The dietitian may prescribe a nutritional supplement to boost your immune system, help prevent infections, and shorten your stay in the hospital. ›› STOP SMOKING: Among the many reasons to kick the habit is that smoking and anesthesia – which you’ll need during surgery – don’t mix. If you smoke, your heart and lungs are compromised and don’t function at full capacity. You are also far more likely to suffer breathing and lung-related complications during surgery and are more likely to need a ventilator after surgery. By quitting smoking before surgery, you’ll not only decrease the likelihood of these risks, but you’re also less likely to have a wound infection, heart attack, or other complication. ›› BOOST YOUR BREATHING: Taking deep breaths on a spirometer – a simple device that helps you exercise your

›› DISCLOSE MEDICATION USE: Prior to surgery, be sure to tell your surgeon and physician anesthesiologist what vitamins, supplements, as well as prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking. You may need to stop taking some of them until after your surgery, because they make your blood less likely to clot and increase the risk of bleeding. The long list of risky medications includes blood thinners such as aspirin, pain relievers such as ibuprofen, and common supplements such as St. John’s wort and vitamins C and E. Do not stop taking any supplements or medications without asking your physician first. ›› GET (OR STAY) ACTIVE: If you exercise, keep it up, and if you don’t, try to responsibly increase your activity level in the weeks before surgery. The sooner you begin to move around after surgery, the less likely you are to develop blood clots and pneumonia. Consider getting into an exercise program – it can reduce complications and shorten hospital stays. ›› REDUCE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES: People who have more than two alcoholic drinks a day are more likely to suffer complications after surgery than light drinkers, and those who drink heavily are more than twice as likely to suffer complications that can result in death. Heavy drinkers are also much more likely to get an infection after surgery, have difficulty breathing, and be admitted to the intensive care unit than non-drinkers. Be your own advocate by following ASA’s tips for improving your health, safety, and surgical outcomes. For more information about being prepared for surgery and anesthesia, visit www.asahq.org.

ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disability, Dyslexia? There can be many causes for learning and behavioral difficulties, and summer is a great time to have these concerns addressed. At Family Psychology Group, our psychologists can help determine the cause with our comprehensive evaluations. We see children of all ages and adults who are not achieving their potential. Once an evaluation is completed, we work closely with our therapist to tailor individual treatment plans. Our therapist works with children and families who are experiencing problems that could be related to depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, low self-esteem, trauma, abuse, problems at school, divorce, remarriage, and blending families.

To schedule an appointment with our therapist or assessment specialists, contact Family Psychology Group at 865-247-4055 or visit www. familypsychologygroup.com.

Struggling with Learning and Behavior Problems?

SUMMER IS A great time to address these difficulties and give your child the tools they need to be successful in the coming school year. If your child has a learning problem, now is a great time to have an assessment completed to determine the possible cause. With an accurate diagnosis, we can give recommendations and ideas to address the problems before the school year gets started. We see children and adolescents of all ages who are experiencing a multitude of issues including depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, behavioral problems, self-esteem issues, trauma, abuse, problems at school, family issues, and family transitions, such as a divorce or remarriage. For children with behavioral problems, we offer interventions to help not only your child, but also help parents learn ways to address troubling behavioral difficulties. For many, having an accurate diagnosis can give tremendous relief and insight to parents. Once a correct diagnosis is indentified, our licensed therapist, Ms. Paige Keisler, MS, LMFT, is able to provide therapeutic solutions to reduce behavioral problems and give parents tools to address behaviors in constructive and meaningful ways. Through individual, family, and play therapy, Ms. Keisler Paige Keisler, works with you and your child MS, LMFT to address the behaviors of concern and also empower you as a parent to help facilitate therapeutic change. We view parents as an integral agent of change, and we believe you’re essential to the process. Ms. Keisler uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help children and families learn new skills and strategies, manage stress, learn relaxation techniques, formulate coping strategies, restructure negative thoughts, and change the once negative interaction cycle to one that’s positive for both you and your child. Parents who have thought there’s no way out can now see they can interact positively with their children again. Summer is a great time to address learning and behavioral difficulties before the upcoming school year. To schedule an appointment with Ms. Keisler or our assessment specialists, call 865-247-4055 or visit www.familypsychologygroup.com. Family Psychology Group

I’VE NOTICED IT, and I’m sure you have as well.

You visit someone’s new home, and almost immediately this huge, unsightly cold air return jumps out at you from amongst freshly painted walls, beautiful woodwork, new furnishings, carefully placed home décor items, and newly hung wall art. There’s no simpler way to put it – cold air returns are hideous, and there are few, if any, ways to camouflage them. There are a few items on the market, but they can be expensive and are often unavailable in the sizes, styles, or colors you want. That is, until now. Knoxville-based L&M Ornamental Iron Co. was started by my family in 1954, and we have been providing the East Tennessee community with quality railing, gates, security doors, mailbox stands, fencing, balconies, and spiral staircases. During the past 60 years, our family has strived to create new trends that will become classic décor in homes for years or even decades to come. Our newest adventure is providing Knoxville with locally-crafted ornamental iron cold air returns to replace those unsightly cold air returns that detract from your home’s interior design. L&M’s new Extrava-vents are individually handcrafted to your exact specifications locally here in Knoxville. It couldn’t be easier or more affordable. Similar products have starting prices exceeding $400! All standard size Extrava-vents, regardless of style or color, are only $299. If you mention Everything Knoxville when ordering, we’ll give you $50 off. That’s only $249 per Extrava-vent for your very own hand-crafted cold air returns. If you need a custom sized Extrava-vent, no problem! Since we create these by hand here in Knoxville, we can accommodate almost any custom order. Trusted by East Tennesseans for 60 years, why not let my family, L&M Ornamental Iron Co. Inc., custom craft ornamental cold air returns for your home? Buying or Selling a Boat?

W

HETHER YOU’RE buying a new or used boat or considering the sale of an existing boat, there are a great many decisions and considerations. Perhaps the most important decision is whether to “go it alone” or seek the advice of an experienced and reputable boat dealer representative. An experienced consultant can guide you through the many decisions necessary when buying or selling a boat, including: » What is the boat’s true condition? » Does the seller have a clear title? » Is a survey necessary? » Where should I advertise my boat or look for watercraft advertisements? » How can I secure financing? » How should I handle the payment or receipt of funds? » Is this a fair price? » Where is a secure place to meet with the buyer/seller?

JULY 11 • 8 PM TENNESSEE THEATRE BETWEEN PACKING CLUBS in their native Texas years ago and more recently performing stadiums on one of country music’s hottest tours, the Eli Young Band became more than a band. They became a brotherhood. Camaraderie and creativity fused into an intoxicating cocktail that has propelled the talented foursome to the vanguard of contemporary country music. With three number one hits, as well as a Grammy nomination and an Academy of Country Music Award for Song of the Year for “Crazy Girl,” the Eli Young Band approached their second album, 10,000 Towns, with a sense of confidence and purpose. It’s been a long, steady rise for lead vocalist Mike Eli, bassist Jon Jones, guitarist James Young, and

drummer Chris Thompson, but the same four musicians have been together from the start and are now reaping the rewards. They began performing together in 2000 while attending North Texas State University and honed their skills on the Lone Star state’s competitive music circuit by building a rabid fan base who appreciated their potent live shows and the edgy, passionate indie albums that preceded their major label ascension. IRS Announces New IRA Rollover Limitation A tax court ruling raises eyebrows and leads to a decision that may affect you. Presented by Ali Swofford

What was once allowed is now prohibited.

In 2008, an affluent couple made a series of withdrawals and transfers among contributory IRAs, rollover IRAs, and non-IRA investment accounts, all with the long-established 60-day deadline for tax-free IRA rollovers in mind. They assumed their actions were permissible under the Internal Revenue Code. In January 2014, a U.S. Tax Court judge ruled otherwise.1

This Tax Court opinion has prompted the IRS to tighten the IRA rollover rules.

Previously, clever taxpayers treated themselves to interest-free loans from their IRA funds by using multiple IRA accounts to sequence multiple 60-day rollover periods. In the court’s view, they were exploiting this loophole, and the IRS is closing it.1,2

Starting in 2015, you are allowed one IRA-to-IRA rollover per 365 days – period. Publication 590 has long stated that a taxpayer can only make one tax-free rollover from a single IRA to another IRA during a 12-month period. That didn’t preclude a taxpayer from making multiple IRA-to-IRA rollovers using multiple IRAs during such a timeframe.1,3 Effective January 1, 2015, the once-a-year rollover restriction applies to all IRAs maintained by a taxpayer. So the tactic of making multiple IRA-to-IRA tax-free rollovers during a 12-month period is kaput.3,4 Here’s the good news. IRS Announcement 2014-15 states: “These actions by the IRS will not affect the ability of an IRA owner to transfer funds from one IRA trustee directly to another, because such a transfer is not a rollover and, therefore, is not subject to the one-rollover-per-year limitation of § 408(d)(3)(B).”4 It is possible that further guidance from the IRS may emerge. Regardless of whether it does or not, IRA-to-IRA rollovers are about to be scrutinized more closely. When Disaster Strikes, Will Your Pets Be Safe? Preparedness tips for pet parents

Americans living in areas prone to severe storms, floods, earthquakes or other natural disasters may be well aware of the philosophy “hope for the best, but plan for the worst.” Families with a disaster plan in place will be better equipped to stay safe and recover from an emergency. Too often, however, even the best planners forget to include provisions for the four-legged members of the family. 16

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2014

WHEN DISASTER strikes, families may not have much time to act. While organizations like the Disaster Relief Network strive to help families and pets in the wake of natural disasters, it’s important to have a disaster plan ready, including a well-stocked Pet Emergency Go-Kit with food, water, and other essentials for your pet. Here is some guidance for putting your “Pet Emergency Go-Kit” together: » Include first aid supplies and a first aid guide book for pets. » Keep three-day supplies of your pet’s favorite food – in a waterproof container – and bottled water. » Store an extra safety harness and leash, because even the best-behaved pet may be frightened in an emergency, causing him to run and hide. » Include waste cleanup supplies. It’s important to properly dispose of pet waste to avoid adding health concerns to an already difficult situation. » If your pet is on any medications, keep a

few days’ worth in your kit. Also include an up-to-date copy of medical records, as well as contact information for your veterinarian and additional veterinary and pet care organizations in your area. » You should have a brief, written explanation of your pet’s feeding routine, personality, and any behavioral issues. In a disaster, your pet may receive care from someone who doesn’t know him as well as you do. » Don’t forget comfort. Include a few toys and a favorite blanket to keep your pet comfortable. Keep your Pet Go-Kit somewhere readily accessible in an emergency. Be sure your pet always wears his/her identification – a microchip or collar ID tag with up-to-date information may help reunite you with your pet if you become separated in the confusion of a disaster scene. If an impending disaster requires you to evacuate, take your pet with you. Be aware of your pet’s favorite hiding places so you’ll know where to look when you’re in a hurry to leave. Before disaster strikes, identify locations where you could take your pet during an evacuation; not all disaster shelters for people will be open to pets. Look for pet-friendly hotels or motels, or ask relatives and friends if they could accommodate you and your pets. Despite your best efforts, it may not be possible to take your pet with you. To alert first responders to the possible presence of a pet in the house, place a pet rescue decal on your front door or window. It should include your veterinarian’s contact information and any special notes about your pet’s personality or medical needs. Carry a picture of your pet in case you become separated. Pet displacement during natural disasters is such a serious issue that the federal government has even enacted standards for evacuating and transporting pets during disasters. One widely quoted report cited Hurricane Katrina as an example of what can happen to pets during a natural disaster. The report said more than 200,000 pets were displaced during the storm, and the majority of them were never reunited with their families. Last year the Disaster Relief Network was launched and is a first-of-its-kind national system that allows the company to quickly coordinate pet food deliveries in response to natural disasters. Since its inception, the network has delivered free food to more than 50 shelters and veterinary clinics in response to floods, forest fires, tornados, and mudslides.

Bummed? A Vacation is Needed!

JUST AS WITH people, dogs can experi-

ence melancholy, too, especially sociable dogs. Canine depression is often triggered by a major life event or change in a household. A move, welcoming a new baby into the world, a family member moving away from home, or simply stress in the home can be traumatic for some dogs and can result in an onset of the blues. The solution? A “doggie vacation” may be the answer. How can you tell if your dog is suffering from depression? It can take on many forms, with the most common being loss of appetite, disengaging in their favorite activities such as walks and games, becoming lethargic, excessive hours sleeping, or the onset of destructive behavior. If you see these signs in your dog, consult your veterinarian initially, because these symptoms are not unique to depression and could mean another medical problem is brewing. If depression is ruled as the culprit, compassion and time are two of the best cures. Dogs need time to adjust to all new situations, and sometimes a change of pace can relieve tension.

If your dog is of the social nature, playing with other dogs may be of great assistance, as canines with like personalities will bond. Consider doggie daycare or overnight boarding for a few days. Call Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits if your dogs need their own vacation or day camp.

Teeing Off with Atlanta Braves Alumni The Atlanta Braves are right in the

middle of their season, but some of their World Series Alumnus are ready to tee off. July brings good golfing weather and a charity tournament to four-star rated Avalon Golf Course. Javy Lopez, Greg McMichael, Brian Jordan, and Pete Smith are all coming to town to play in the Braves Alumni Tournament on July 21st.

“VISIT KNOXVILLE is excited to assist our

friends at Avalon Golf Course in bringing this tournament to East Tennessee,” stated Visit Knoxville President Kim Bumpas. “What better way to give local Braves fans a chance to meet and even play alongside some of their sports heroes.” The Braves Alumni Association helps more than 90 charities in the greater Atlanta area, but the giving does not stop there! Some of the proceeds will go to

Fostering Hope TN, who help children in the foster care system feel a sense of hope and self-worth. The organization provides backpacks, suitcases, and supplies to children who are transitioning from foster homes or who have just entered the system. If you would like to come out and play with some of the Braves Alumni, the sponsorship package might be the best way to go. Sponsorship teams will receive the following for $5,000: four players in a tournament with a chance to golf with one of the Braves alumni and tour Turner Field with a former Braves player. Sponsor teams will also receive four tickets to the alumni suite with exception of the Red Sox. If you are looking to just get out on the greens and play, that’s also permitted! The cost is $120 per player to take

part in the tournament. For information on team sponsorships and individual reservations, visit www. avalongolf.com/braves. Visit Knoxville (Knoxville Convention and Visitors Bureau) is the official CVB for the City of Knoxville and Knox County. Visit Knoxville is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, private company that works together with the community, business leaders, and local and state government to further develop Knoxville as a premier leisure, meetings, and travel destination.

Boosting Your Natural Immunity IT’S WIDELY RECOGNIZED today that

the environment we live in, and particularly the food we ingest, has a profound effect on our health. Improper diet has been implicated in numerous degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, stroke, and others. What is often overlooked is the effect food has on infectious diseases as well. It has been well known for decades that malnutrition has a negative effect on the immune system. Worldwide, infections and starvation have gone hand in hand for centuries. More recently it has been found that deficiencies in various vitamins and minerals could cause the immune system to function at less than optimum capability. While it is always a good idea to avoid contact with obviously contagious people, the reality is that we are constantly exposed to microbes of various kinds. Whether or not we succumb to them is largely dependent upon the strength of the immune system, which can fluctuate depending upon our daily fare. A well-balanced diet can ensure that we have all the nutrients we need. But there are certain foods that are now known to assist the immune system in its constant struggle to protect the body. Known antibacterial foods include garlic, turmeric, coconut oil, horseradish, and ginger. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, and pickles contain beneficial bacteria that are themselves a large part of the immune system. When raw honey is used as a sweetener, an enzyme it contains can be a catalyst for the production of hydrogen peroxide, which is a known antiseptic. Nutrients and antibacterials, however, are not the whole equation. Possibly even more important than what you consume is what 18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2014

you avoid. Mucus forming foods provide an environment that is sublime for the proliferation of bacteria and viruses. Dairy products and flour products, especially refined flour, are the two most mucus forming foods, and they create a lush breeding ground for bacteria. Add to this the depletion of minerals caused by the consumption of refined sugar and the environment is perfect. If an infection occurs, following the above recommendations not only can shorten the duration, but it can also make the experience much more comfortable. You will likely experience less congestion, less pain and soreness, and less fatigue. In addition, you can assist your body in replacing cells damaged by the infection by providing it with easily digestible protein. Traditionally we have instinctively done this by consuming chicken soup, but a better option is soft tofu in a salty broth, made with either miso or a traditional soy sauce such as tamari or shoyu. You can’t do much about your external environment and the pathogens you will find there, but you can make your internal environment a place that viruses and bacteria will not be welcomed. Then you can breathe a sigh of relief as deeply as you want. Note: Consult your healthcare professional before

making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

WITH EXPERIENCE ON YOUR SIDE, THE SKY IS THE LIMIT DISEASES AND DISORDERS of the ears, nose, throat, head, and neck impact the lives of millions around the world. Unfortunately, East Tennessee is known for the above average occurrences of things such as allergies and chronic sinusitis. Greater Knoxville Ear Nose & Throat (GKENT) has been caring for this community for nearly three decades. Simply put, their approach to care is different in that they draw from the experience and expertise of eight board certified physicians and four onsite audiologists to provide a well-rounded and comprehensive approach to diagnostics and treatment. EK: Otolaryngologist is a big word. Tell us about Otolaryngology and what you do. Dr. DePersio: Otolaryngologists, commonly referred to as ENTs, are trained in the medical and surgical evaluation and treatment of patients with diseases and/or disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and related structures of the head and neck. At GKENT, we offer services and treatments ranging from sinus disorders, sleep apnea, facial trauma or deformities, and balance disorders. At GKENT, we take our practice one step further by offering comprehensive audiology services, including custom Earmolds and Earplugs, Assisted Listening Devices (ALDs), and Hearing Aids including the Ponto System, a proven bone anchored hearing system. We offer many styles of Hearing Aids ranging in size, power, and electrical structure to provide the best desired outcome for patients. Personally, I offer patients a unique expertise as the area’s only fellow in the American Head and Neck Society and board certified in facial plastic surgery. 20

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2014

EK: There is a strong emphasis in today’s healthcare on patient-centered care. What does that mean to GKENT, and what will patients experience when they walk through your doors? Dr. Baker: For nearly 30 years, GKENT has been the region’s premier otolaryngology center for both children and adults. Our eight board certified physicians and four audiologists work collaboratively to provide individualized care to each patient. We are consistently recognized as leaders in our field and honored as US News Best ENT Practice, while three of our physicians were named 2014 Best Doctors in America. In addition, GKENT now has five convenient locations to serve our patients: North Knoxville Medical Center, UT Medical Center, Sevierville, Jefferson City, and we are proud to announce our newest location now open at Fort Sanders West. From check-in to checkout, we work hard to provide the best possible experience and outcomes for our patients. EK: Allergies are always a hot topic in East Tennessee. Are there any new advancements in the treatment of pesky seasonal allergies? Dr. Horton: There are a number of common methods used to determine which substances a person is allergic to. Once identified, a GKENT physician will work closely with each individual patient to recommend an individual plan to restore quality of life. GKENT was the first in the area to offer Sublingual Immunotherapy or SLIT, the convenient, safe, affordable alternative to allergy shots. One drop, under the tongue, once a day eliminates the need for allergy injections for most people. Some individuals may still

require traditional allergy shots, antihistamines, environmental control, avoidance, and, in the most severe cases, surgery in their personalized treatment plan. EK: What role do allergies play in sinusitis, and how do you treat Chronic Sinusitis? Dr. Rosenbaum: An allergic reaction in general terms is an exaggerated response to an irritant. Inhaled allergens lead to swelling of the mucous membranes, causing blockage or drainage, with the end result often sinusitis. GKENT physicians utilize comprehensive strategies, combining medical and surgical treatment for disorders of the Nose & Sinus. In-office Balloon Sinuplasty is a procedure in which physicians open up chronically inflamed sinuses in the same way heart surgeons open up blocked arteries with balloon angioplasty. Endoscopic Sinus Surgery removes sinus blockages utilizing an endoscope to magnify the sinus tissues and specialized instruments to remove causes of the blockage. In cases where a deviated septum is obstructing drainage from the sinuses, GKENT physicians may choose septoplasty to repair this blockage. EK: Sleep Apnea seems to be a common issue that can be quite dangerous if untreated. What can you do to treat these issues? Dr. Rathfoot: Often people realize they have a sleep disorder when they find themselves waking up at night or dozing off easily during the day, which indeed can be extremely dangerous. Sleep apnea is an obstruction of the airway resulting in pauses in breathing during sleep. Snoring occurs when airflow through passages in the back of the mouth and nose are blocked, resulting in obstructed breathing. Both sleep apnea and snoring are common sleep disorders that can be very dangerous if left untreated. A sleep study can be performed to determine if a sleep disorder is present. Many patients are administered a Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) or a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) for treatment. In some cases, patients undergo a surgical placement of small rods, or Pillar Implants, in the soft palate, which leads to hardening of that palate to reduce relaxation and vibration of muscles in the back of the mouth. EK: Is there anything else you would like to add before closing? Dr. Crawley: GKENT is honored to have a physical presence in West Knoxville where so many of our patients reside. We value the feedback of our patients and continually seek ways to better serve them. Providing convenient access to care ranks high on our list of priorities. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 865-244-4396 or visit www.greaterknoxent.com.

Beach Party Time at Spa 9700

Don’t limit your summer beach trip to one week. Visit Spa 9700 during July and August, and you can be at the beach anytime. The annual Summer Beach Party embraces all things tropical, relaxing, sunny, and “beachy,” and you don’t have to pack a thing! THE RUNDOWN of the beach themed treat-

ments begins with the Margarita Manicures and Pedicures. A citrus soak, lime zest scrub, mask, and lime hydrating lotion are followed by a paraffin treatment – all while enjoying a cooling Margarita (alcohol free of course). The featured facial is a Piña Colada Facial utilizing Eminence Organic Skin Care Products. This facial includes a coconut milk cleanser, continues with coconut cream masque, and includes a pineapple enzyme peel finished with coconut age corrective moisturizer. Of course this relaxing facial includes all the pampering and attention to detail that Spa 9700 is known for, and, best of all, it is anti-aging. Body treatments are very popular in the summer when hiding beneath layers of clothing just looks silly. Perennial features of Spa 9700’s Summer Beach Party are the Inch Loss Wrap and the St. Tropez Sunless Tan. They haven’t gone anywhere, but this year there is a new addition. The Toning & Firming Cactus Wrap ($70) is a warm aromatic getaway that takes you through fields of citrus smoothness into a firming cactus wrap that feels more plumping than prickly. Spa 9700 has other body treatments on the menu. Choose the one best for you. Spa 9700 is excited to add the Sweet Feet Salicylic Peel ($60) to its menu for all those sandal wearers among us. While wearing sandals, flip flops, and all their cousins is something we all enjoy, it takes its toll on our feet. Dry, cracked heels are just not attractive no matter how “cute” the shoe. The Sweet Feet Salicylic Peel is designed to peel away the layers of dead skin and leave feet looking smooth and new. It can be repeated every seven to 14 days and is a great treatment to have about a week before a pedicure. Women AND men will love this treatment. Of course there are beach towels, beach chair covers, bathing suit cover-ups, sunscreens, beach bags, totes, luggage, and almost anything you need for your trip to the actual beach or lake this summer. See you soon at the Spa 9700 Beach Party!

PAULA POUNDSTONE JULY 26 | 8PM BIJOU THEATRE

TWENTY-FIVE years ago, Paula Poundstone

climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country, stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. A high school dropout, she went on to become one of the great humorists of our time. You can hear her through your laughter as a regular panelist on NPR’s popular rascal of a weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. She tours regularly, performing standup comedy across the country. While there is no doubt that Poundstone is funny, the thing that probably separates her from the pack of comics working today and that has made her a legend among comics and audiences alike is her ability to be spontaneous with a crowd. of you for your support and encouragement since purchasing The Robin’s Nest in historic downtown Sweetwater. It’s been a time of transition and learning, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. We have two exciting changes at The Robin’s Nest. First is our expanded gourmet kitchen area with baking, canning, and hard-to-find kitchen tools and accessories, as well as gourmet foods including Stonewall Kitchen, the Raven’s Nest, The Pasta Shoppe, and Blanton’s candies, which are made right here in Sweetwater. In addition to unique gifts, The Robin’s Nest continues to offer you a complete line of wild bird supplies, including a wide variety of bird baths, the very popular PAR-ASOL hummingbird feeders and supplies, Audubon feeders, houses, and, yes, even mealworms. We also feature a variety of garden accessories from statuaries and urns to trellises and heirloom seeds for your vegetable and flower garden! Now for the big news! I am so excited to announce an entirely new product line, CeCe Caldwell’s Eco-Friendly Natural Chalk + Clay Paints. These paints are completely safe for you and your family. CeCe Caldwell’s paints are chalk and clay based paints that contain no VOC’s, are non-toxic, and are odorless. The minerals in these paints are clay, porcelain clay, and chalk blended into a water base solution. These paints are easy enough for a first-time DIYer and yet perform well enough for use by professional painters and furniture finishers. The paints are self priming. Just start with a clean surface, and complete coverage can be achieved with one or two coats. CeCe Caldwell’s offers several finishing waxes and glazes to enable you to achieve just the right look for your piece. Cleanup is fast and easy, requiring only warm, soapy water. CeCe Caldwell’s paints come in a wide palette of colors that are inspired from coastal regions, our soaring mountain areas, great plain fields, our spectacular deserts, big cities, and rural towns. In addition, we will be offering beginning and finishing classes, as well as one-on-one classes. Please like us on Facebook at www.facebook. com/catherinesrobinsnest, or give us a call for our class schedule. Everything you need to create your next masterpiece can be found at The Robin’s Nest, where you’ll discover a truly unique place to shop.

E D U C AT O R P R O F I L E by Courtney Craig

Brooke Boyd WHEN BROOKE BOYD learned about UT Pro Bono, the student-led UT Law program that helps students volunteer in a meaningful way in the community, she was so excited to join it that she showed up for her first meeting with a nine-page proposal. “Although there were so many programs already organized by UT Pro Bono, I noticed that there weren’t any programs that worked with child advocates such as Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children or the Guardian ad Litem, which I worked with in my home state of Florida,” she said. “So I set up a meeting and asked how law students at UT Law could assist CASA with their mission. I asked – begged, really – to bring my program vision to reality under the UT Pro Bono umbrella.” Brooke’s vision led to the establishment of CASA’s VOLunteers, which is still going strong. For her pro bono work during her time at UT Law, she was awarded the Black-Pierce Award when she graduated in May. “As a public interest lawyer, you don’t just get to pursue your passion of arguing the law

and advocating for a client,” said Brooke. “You get to do it all for such a worthy cause. It isn’t the thank yous, because sometimes public interest work is thankless work, but knowing that you can change the course of someone’s life just by caring, just by being a voice for those who are voiceless in the legal system, is humbling and awe-inspiring.” Since graduating from UT Law, Brooke has moved back to Florida with her husband, where she’ll soon take the bar exam. Working with children became a theme of Brooke’s work during her time at UT. “After my first year, I began to work closely with the Department of Children’s Services in Blount County,” she said. “That was one of the most profound experiences of my life. I was able to work directly with the department to protect Tennessee’s children. I worked specifically in severe abuse cases and discovered my love and passion for protecting the welfare of our children.” Brooke also volunteered with Legal Aid of East Tennessee at the Family Justice Center during

her second summer of law school. She became UT Pro Bono’s director during her third year. “As director, I oversaw the Executive Board in planning fundraisers, organizing events, and working closely with faculty and staff to promote public interest and access to justice endeavors,” she said. Brooke was given the inaugural BlackPierce Award, established by retired UT Law professors Jerry Black and Carl Pierce, who sought to honor student volunteerism. She says she absolutely plans to continue her pro bono work when she passes the bar and becomes a professional lawyer. “I hope to make my legal career in the public interest sector,” she said. “I’m also looking to get involved with the local bar association and apply everything I learned from all my wonderful experiences in Knoxville and bring them here to the Sunshine State!” July 2014 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

dominate the news today, the American entrepreneur spirit is alive and well, particularly amongst women. Why else would women be launching two out of every three new business start-ups today? A perfect example of American entrepreneurship is Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop, which was launched last November by husband and wife team, Scott and Meredith Layton. Combining the nostalgic appeal of their grandmothers’ decades-old recipes for their sumptuous, fresh, homemade pies with a highly duplicable business model, Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop was an instant and overwhelming success. This success was duplicated at their newest Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop in Turkey Creek, with customers driving in from as far as Sweetwater to enjoy the same delectable, Southern-inspired homemade pies and biscuits that most of us enjoyed as children. Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop is a dream come true for both Scott and Meredith, and they are now offering a limited number of franchise opportunities to other budding entrepreneurs who share their common passion and the opportunities that Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop represents for them and their families. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion and desire to reach out to achieve your American dream, they would like to share their dream with you – a dream as American as apple pie. Your Number One Dining Destination

IT’S HARD TO IMAGINE that The Mansion

will be celebrating its second anniversary in December, which is just five short months away. So much has happened during this time, but one thing we’re particularly grateful for is being recently selected as the number one restaurant in Sweetwater by TripAdvisor. However, none of this would have been possible without your incredible support and encouragement. We’re also grateful to The Mansion’s number one fan, Jack Wilson, owner of Sweetwater Flower Shop.

ONE OF COUNTRY music’s most rec-

ognizable hit-makers earning numerous CMA, ACM, and Grammy nominations since the release of his debut album, Long Black Train, Josh Turner has sold more than five million albums and garnered four number one hits (including three multi-week chart-toppers): “Your Man,” “Would You Go With Me,” and “Why Don’t We Just Dance.” His song, “All Over Me,” from Haywire also reached the top spot on the charts, making him one of only seven country artists to have two number one hits in 2010. Turner released his fifth studio album, Punching Bag, last June, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Country Albums Chart.

Random Acts of Flowers Welcomes New Board Members “Since then I have volunteered once a month to arrange flowers,” she said. “Each time I enter the building there are ALWAYS smiles and happy faces. As a member of the RAF Board, I will bring to the table the same positive, happy energy that I see demonstrated through the dedicated volunteers.” Random Acts of Flowers Knoxville is thrilled to welcome its newest additions to the board of directors. Without the support of local community leaders, it would be impossible to achieve the mission of recycling and repurposing flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness in healthcare facilities across the country. As a recycling “green” charity run almost entirely by volunteers, RAF is committed to nourishing the health of the environment, individuals, and the community. To learn more about RAF, become a volunteer, or make a donation, call 865. 633.9082 or visit www.RAFKnoxville.org.

Incoming president of the Board of Directors, Chad Harrison (left), and founder/CEO, Larsen Jay (right)

AS RANDOM ACTS OF FLOWERS

(RAF) has grown and evolved as a charitable organization, many people have left a significant and lasting impact. Every year RAF Knoxville welcomes a new group of local community leaders dedicated to the mission of recycling flowers and positively impacting people in healthcare facilities with a beautiful bouquet, smile, and moment of kindness and compassion. Founder/CEO of Ace Consultants, Cecil Scarbrough, has an emotional, personal connection to RAF. “Random Acts of Flowers offers the local community a unique service that is vital to people and appreciation for our neighbor in their time of need,” he said. “It’s so easy for a community to rally during a major disaster, but as individuals, we have our own disasters that may go unnoticed to the masses. It’s during those moments that we search, feel lost, feel alone, and reach out for hope. I believe that Random Acts of Flowers fulfills that void on a weekly basis by delivering flowers to patients. It feels good to see a smile from an unexpecting recipient, but it feels better knowing you didn’t just leave flowers. You left hope and provided a little peace of mind that no one is ever alone as long as you are in our community.”

Melissa Everett was connected to RAF’s mission through its founder/CEO, Larsen Jay. “After hearing Larsen’s personal story you have to believe the organization’s foundation has deep meaning,” she said. “There is a reason it has been so impactful in such a short time. Besides, flowers have a way of making an ordinary day extraordinary!” As a chair of the Knoxville Zoo’s recent Zoofari fundraiser, Lucy Schaad is a seasoned community leader. She became interested in RAF through her passion for gardening. “It’s hard not to like Random Acts of Flowers… it’s a win-win for the community,” she said. Recently named as vice president of sales for US Cellular’s National Business Channel, Tom Catani will provide valuable businessminded leadership to RAF. He has served on numerous non-profit boards and understands the simple core of RAF’s mission. “I’m honored to continue my service to our community through the good work of Random Acts of Flowers,” he said. “Every smile matters when healing.” A year and a half ago, Rose Perkinson became involved with RAF through a referral from a friend. When she is not busy with her young children, she volunteers at the Random Acts of Flowers’ facility.

Give Your Car That New Showroom Look

Brandon Wood, Owner

THERE’S NO QUESTION about it. With few

exceptions, we love our cars, and because of the high price of cars today and our desire to drive them longer, proper maintenance is essential. But what about your automobile’s exterior and those dents and dings that have accumulated throughout the years from car doors and shopping carts? They detract from your car’s overall appearance and lower its value at trade-in time. So what’s the solution? You can take your car to a conventional body shop, where the dents and dings are filled with a bonding agent, sanded, painted, and a clear coat of paint applied, or you could visit one of the numerous paintless dent repair places you frequently see opening and then closing months later. Another option would be for you to visit Advantage Paintless Dent Removal. So what’s the difference? Advantage owner, Brandon Wood, has combined more than a decade of automotive restoration experience with state-ofthe-art paintless dent removal technology to offer you the high level of service and peace of mind you deserve when removing those annoying dents, dings, and hail damage from your vehicle’s exterior – and all backed up with their 100% satisfaction guarantee and lifetime warranty. You’ll also appreciate their professional approach to their customers. “We have a very low key approach to our business,” said Brandon. “There’s absolutely no sales gimmicks or pressure to make a decision. The work we perform is our craft, and you’ll discover our uncommon passion for every repair we perform. Our work and high level of customer satisfaction speak for themselves.” Advantage also offers a variety of other services that benefit both car and truck owners. “We offer paint correction and polishing to remove scratches and swirls so your car has the showroom shine,” said Brandon. “We also offer spray-on truck bed liners to help protect its finish.” If you’d like to give your vehicle that new showroom look, call Advantage Paintless Dent Removal today for a free estimate. Small dents can be removed in about one hour for just a fraction of the cost the conventional body shops charge.

Just One More Eurotech Knoxville Success Story “I OWN A 2013 Audi Allroad that I purchased recently,” said Joanne Hibbs of Knoxville. “Rick and Janis Berry, owners of Eurotech Knoxville, helped me find my new car to replace my 2001 Audi A6. Owning an older vehicle is something I try to avoid because of increased maintenance and repair costs.” Joanne, like hundreds of other satisfied European motorcar owners, discovered Eurotech Knoxville, the area’s premier dealer service alternative. “After several negative service-related experiences in the past, I was delighted to discover Eurotech Knoxville and its owners, Rick and Janis,” said Joanne. “I really loved my Audi A6 and was determined to keep it as long as possible, and Eurotech helped me to do just that. My A6, with periodic maintenance, continued to handle well and was tops in comfort. I was never left stranded in bad weather, and it safely got me to where I needed to go, even when my husband’s car couldn’t get up our driveway. “I trusted Rick and Janis and their service team to keep my car running,” continued Joanne. “They listened to my concerns, did a thorough analysis, made recommendations, provided accurate estimates, and performed timely maintenance and repairs at reasonable prices. Now I’m trusting my new Audi Allroad to Eurotech Knoxville and am looking forward to enjoying it for as long as I enjoyed my former Audi. But even before I purchased my new Allroad, its purchase was contingent on being able to take it to Eurotech for maintenance and service.” If you own a European motorcar and would like to discover a dealer alternative experience like Joanne’s and hundreds of other satisfied vehicle owners, call or visit Eurotech Knoxville today, and discover for yourself the difference that a nearly three decade old commitment to automotive excellence can make for you and your motorcar. ROAD TRIP! SMART IDEAS TO GET YOUR CAR RUNNING AND LOOKING ITS BEST BEFORE YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE

Are you a self-proclaimed road warrior who loves when other drivers do a double take to admire your well-cared-for car? Do you like to make others envious of your engine’s soft purr, your car’s immaculate finish, manicured curves, and polished accents? Even if you’re not a car connoisseur, summer travel is upon us, and now’s the time to get your vehicle road trip ready – inside and out.

TUNE IN TO TUNE UP Before you hit the gas, it’s important to make

sure your car is running properly so you don’t end up stranded on the side of the road. First, check the fluids – oil, coolant, brake, and windshield washer. If it’s almost time to get the oil changed, get ahead of the game and do it before you leave. A long road trip can put additional stress on your motor, but clean oil can keep things working properly. Another way to keep everything running smoothly is to maintain the health of your tires. This not only creates a much safer driver experience, allowing you to handle the car better, but also saves money on fuel. Review your vehicle owner’s manual for the correct air pressure for your specific tires.

The condition of the exterior tire surface should be cared for as well. Driving on bald tires can be extremely dangerous and can cause you to lose control in slick conditions. Tires also tend to heat up on long trips, and thin tire walls can result in unnecessary blow-outs. To make sure you have proper tire tread, insert a penny in between several different tread grooves across the tire with the bottom of Lincoln’s head facing down. If the tire tread doesn’t touch honest Abe’s head, it’s time to invest in a new set of tires. Lastly, check to be certain all lights and signals are functioning properly. Sit in the car and turn each light or signal on and off while a friend observes. This will ensure you can properly communicate with other drivers on the road, especially during nighttime travel.

GET YOUR GEAR IN GEAR Now that your car is prepared for the road

trip ahead, it’s important for you to make sure you’re equipped with everything you need to make your getaway a success. These days many cars come equipped with GPS, but you never know when that might malfunction or a signal is lost. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to have a paper map handy in case you need to take a detour or would like to break your planned route and go exploring. To avoid frequent stops, take tasty, filling snacks like pretzels, granola bars, trail mix, or beef jerky. Bottles of water will keep you hydrated, but don’t overdo it otherwise you’ll be making several pit stops along the way. Also, don’t forget to make sure your glove compartment and trunk are both stocked with emergency essentials like a flashlight, jumper cables, roadside flares, blankets, and a first aid kit. Of course no road trip is complete without a fun playlist to act as the soundtrack for your journey. Once you’ve followed these necessary steps to make sure your car is functioning properly and looking great, consider that your green light to go. The open road awaits you. CertaPro Painters

Putting certainty back into the customer experience THINK THE MOST rewarding part of

my profession is the expression on the faces of both homeowners and business owners alike when we complete their painting projects,” said Joann Brown, coowner of CertaPro Painters of Knoxville. “It’s as if their home or business has been transformed. Oftentimes our customers have stated that their home or business looks as good as new, sometimes better.” The painting experience encompasses so much more than just the finished product. It encompasses the total experience, from the initial consultation to the contract, color selection, prep work, painting, and follow-up. “From my own personal experience, as well as those of friends, family, and neighbors, I came to discover that many of our experiences in dealing with painting contractors was many times less than satisfactory,” said Joann. That’s the reason why husband and co-owner, Jeff, and Joann launched CertaPro Painters here in Knoxville. Their goal was to put the certainty back into the painting experience for both homeowners and their commercial customers. “Our primary objective was to create a customer experience designed to exceed their expectations – an experience that many of us had come to know in the past but thought no longer existed,” said Jeff. “We perform an independent survey every year of hundreds of our clients, and year after year between 95-98% of our clients would refer us to their friends and family!” CertaPro’s team of experts, from their consultants and painters to their craftsmen and follow-up associates, have combined to create a total turn-key approach, which has resulted in a positive customer response that has exceeded even their high expectations. Customers genuinely appreciate the thoroughness of their initial consultations, the great care they take in the preparation and projection of the job site, the quality of the work performed and the materials used, the clean-up, and the follow-up afterwards. “Jeff and I remain involved in every aspect of the dayto-day operations of our company to ensure the service

experience is exceptional,” said Joann. “Customers also appreciate the fact that, in addition to our experienced and talented painters, we also have teams of other craftsmen that are available to perform a variety of renovation projects both indoors and out, including kitchens, baths, decks, pressure washing, carpentry, and more,” said Jeff. “These added services further expand our total turn-key customer experience that reduces the client’s responsibilities while creating a single source of responsibility, CertaPro Painters. This eliminates the frustrations that can often result when multiple contractors are involved in a single refresh project.” “If your home or business requires

painting, or if you are contemplating a home repair or remodeling project, I invite you to call us to arrange for a no cost, no obligation, on-site consultation,” said Joann. “I further invite you to experience a level of certainty in your next project that will result in the positive experience you deserve.” Experience the difference CertaPro Painters can make at your home or business and where they’ve put the certainty back into the customer experience, all backed up with one of the best reputations and warranties in the industry.

Hand-Crafted in the Orient Hand-Cared for at Superior CARING FOR THESE priceless, hand-crafted

works of art has become a passion for me throughout the years. The treasures that have been made by hand for centuries in the homes of artisans continue to be made by hand in very much the same way today. Natural fibers dyed using organic dyes convey not only a story in their intricate weave, but they also represent a family’s history, many of whom pass on this tradition from generation to generation. While admiring their beauty, I have developed a passion for caring for these works of art that families can pass on to their children and their children’s children. Almost like a legacy. To protect these investments, they should be periodically washed. Not cleaned, but washed – and by hand. These rugs can be permanently damaged by using the same process used to clean wall-to-wall carpeting. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we hand wash every Oriental rug using a multiple step process we’ve developed to wash and protect your Oriental rugs. In fact, much of the equipment and processes used are proprietary, developed by us throughout the years. Each rug is hand inspected and evaluated before we begin the washing process. That’s because we adjust the process, pH, and washing agents used to meet the specific needs of each of your rugs. That also means your rug is under our constant observation to assure that it’s safely and thoroughly washed and dried. There’s simply no substitute. We exercise the same care in washing and protecting your rugs that went into their creation. At Superior, we go even further by continuing to further our education of the hand-woven rug industry and improve our washing process. Only recently did we begin to use only ionized water when washing your rugs. That means we’ve eliminated chlorine, organic materials, trace minerals, and other contaminants that may harm your rug. To protect your handmade treasures and to pass them on to future generations as family heirlooms, have your Oriental rugs cleaned by the knowledgeable rug washing professionals at Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning.

New Style, New Look, New Everything! IT REALLY IS fulfilling and fun as an Interior Designer to take a room and completely revamp and redesign it from scratch. Not only that, but also introduce new patterns, color schemes, and a different style of furniture. Our homeowner, Kelly Fletcher, was ready for this kind of change for her and her partner’s dining room. Being in the public relations business, they love to entertain at their home, so it only made sense to spice up this room and give it an entirely new personality and look from the ceiling to the floor!

We specialize in new construction & remodeling, custom window treatments & bedding, fine furniture, lighting and accessories RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL DESIGN

One consideration was the color of the kitchen cabinets, which is a light pine color with a white color wash on it. Also, we repainted the kitchen, living, and keeping area a taupe color, which is the background color of the dining room rug. Our goal was to make the rooms flow and continue a soft, elegant, and updated look. The centerpiece, the Karkoff dining room table, screams for attention with its most uniquely designed legs. Carved out of solid mahogany and painted in a pale color, it creates a WOW factor for this room. To contrast the more linear lines of the table, we opted for Cesara dining room side chairs with some softer, curved lines and off-white linen fabric. The color and finish of the chairs (hand-rubbed

black) also contrast nicely with the table and is repeated in the light fixture from Visual Comfort, as well as in the drapery hardware. Since the draperies are solid linen fabric without any pattern, we used a Candice Olsen wallpaper to introduce some more geometric shapes and interest to the room. (This wallpaper continues to flow into a small hall off the main foyer.) We also pulled out a lighter color from the wallpaper and repeated it on the ceiling, which allows the crown molding to “pop.” Kelly has beautiful antique plates to display, so we decided to contrast the “old” with the “new” and chose a solid birch casement cabinet with metal framed glass doors. This brings a touch of “industrial” to this space. The hand-tufted wool rug is yet another element that introduces color, design, and further helps to pull the entire room together. I want to thank Kelly for having trusted me for more than 15 years and having me design four of her residences, as well as all her custom window treatments and beddings.

Why Build A Custom Home?

CUSTOM HOMES stand out from the crowd. They are one-of-a-kind homes and are typically upscale and feature luxury upgrades and a unique architectural design. These homes can be more stylized than many production homes. Homebuyers choose their ideal location and environment, so custom homes often incorporate elements of the landscape into the design and can be built to take full advantage of each site’s outstanding features, whether it’s a view of the mountains or the lake or simply a community setting.

energy usage, security systems, lighting, and even music playing in each room. Multigenerational Living Whether it’s aging parents moving in with their adult children or young adults moving back in with mom and dad, multigenerational households have unique needs when it comes to a home. We’re seeing an increasing need to tailor homes to this lifestyle. Multigenerational families often build homes that include the traditional “mother-in-law suite” or even feature a locked-off living space within the home. These apartment-style spaces can have their own kitchenette, full bathroom, and living areas to provide a sense of privacy and independence. As the country Universal Design grows older and many baby boomers look to retirement, Universal Design (UD) features are an ever-growing priority for many custom buyers and builders. UD is used to ensure that features like wider doors, lower countertops, and fewer stairs are used to create a home that everyone can enjoy comfortably. An accessible home allows owners to age in place, prolonging their ability to stay in the house independently, and can also increase the home’s value by expanding the market for the home to any future buyer despite age, stature, or ability. Luxe Homes & Design creates homes

designed for each homeowner individually or from their own designs. W h i l e p ro d u c t i o n builders build communities by restricting selection Jenny Blalock to a group of Licensed General Contractor preselected home types and homesites they’ve selected and purchased themselves, Luxe Homes & Design prefers to build on homesites owned by the homeowner and start fresh with each design. This allows designer/ builder Jenny Blalock to spend more time with each homeowner. For a free, no obligation consultation for your new home, contact Jenny at 865-7554680 or visit www.luxehomesdesign.com. With a well-thought out plan, your new luxury dream home is closer to being a reality than you might have imagined.

Trends in Custom Homes

Green Building Because of the growing interests in the environment, Luxe Homes & Designs is embracing green building techniques. Building green allows homebuyers to include a wide range of green products and gives them the opportunity to weigh each cost and benefit to create a custom home that’s stylish and comfortable but also eco-friendly. A good example of a green product Luxe Homes & Design is installing in their homes is reclaimed barn wood flooring from Plantation Reclaimed Inc. All the flooring is milled from old barns taken down locally and made into beautiful hardwood floors that are truly unique and also help our environment. Specialized amenities New Amenities really set custom homes apart. Today’s homeowners like to see features that will improve their lifestyle through health, entertainment, or comfort. Yoga studios, pools, and fitness rooms can be added to encourage healthy living; game rooms and theaters can be added for entertainment; and for comfort, breezy, screened-in porches or warm hearths can make your home feel cozy and welcoming. Custom amenities are also taking a turn to the world of tech. In a world where there’s an app for everything, homebuyers are beginning to expect a custom home to do more and be “smart.” Nowadays you can control many features in your custom home using a phone, such as controlling Photograph by Beth Fellhoelter

It’s the perfect place to entertain family and friends and even more memorable after our recent bitterly cold winter. There’s only one problem: mosquitoes.

If you’ve discovered what other homeowners have already discovered, those pesky mosquitoes are back and are forcing many of our out-of-door events back indoors, where we are forced to admire our home’s outdoor living areas through our patio doors. But the solution to what’s bugging you is not to surrender your outdoor living area to the mosquitoes and other annoying insects. It’s much simpler than that. Just pick up the phone and call Heritage Termite & Pest Service, your one-stop solution for what’s bugging you. Gent Heating & Cooling

A level of service you might have thought no longer existed

WHEN WE LAUNCHED Gent Heating & Cooling, our goal was to provide a level of service that you might have thought no longer existed. My husband, Shane, and I have made every effort to remember that it’s your family that we serve and not just a heating and cooling system. Well, thanks to our commitment and the response and encouragement from a growing number of customers who we credit for our success, we have seen our business prosper. To meet your growing needs, we have continued to invest in our business. We have expanded our office and warehouse, added experienced and trained technicians, and only recently purchased a full scale service vehicle that includes just about everything and anything needed to get your home’s HVAC system up and running quickly, with less likelihood of a return visit needed. We have also expanded our business to meet the needs of our rapidly growing commercial customer base.

As part our expansion, we are also doing our part to help the environment. We have added a state-of-the-art recycling center. Old parts that come from repairs and system replacements are recycled instead of filling up landfills. For all of our success, Shane and I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your support. Our family truly understands that it was your family’s trust in us that is at the very foundation of our success. So as the summer months heat up, and should you need service or perhaps a tune-up or scheduled service call, expect the unexpected. From our professional, uniformed, and polite staff to our state-of-the-art repair equipment and experienced, trained technicians, expect that level of family service that you too might have thought no longer existed.

Is It a Cold or Mold?

MOLD

HAVING GROWN UP in East Tennessee, I

never realized I had such severe allergies. My parents always assumed it was a cold. My bedroom was in the basement, a consistently damp environment with an adjoining laundry room. It was only during a remodel that was necessitated by several episodes of the family washing machine overflowing that we discovered that the wall cavities were mold ridden. I guess this is what triggered my allergies. In an area Jeremy & Ashley Akers with such poor air quality at times (i.e. high pollen, molds, and everyday pollutants), it’s no surprise so many suffer from allergies like mine. In fact, infants who live in moldy homes are three times more likely to develop asthma by age seven. Approximately 60% of the air we breathe in our homes comes from our basements or crawlspaces, so it’s important to monitor those mold conducive environments for your family’s health and your home’s health. According to a Cincinnati Childhood Allergy and Air Pollution Study, early life exposure to indoor mold seems to play a critical role in childhood asthma development. Genetic factors are also important to consider in asthma risk, since infants whose parents have an allergy or asthma are at the greatest risk. This study should motivate expectant parents, especially if they have a family history of allergy or asthma, to correct water damage and reduce the mold burden in their homes to protect the respiratory health of their children. Did you know that indoor air quality is responsible for more than 90% of upper respiratory infections? Newly constructed and more energy efficient homes tend to trap air inside, so there are fewer natural “air exchanges,” which in return creates a perfect environment for airborne contaminants. If you think mold might be at the source of your family’s health problems, why not call Mold Drs. USA today? Mold Drs. USA is known to be the best at what we do for our customers. We have the very best training, knowledge, and education in the air quality industry. Since 2005, we have helped many families in the Knoxville area have the peace of mind they deserve.

INSECT PESTS absolutely love the warm summer months! Did you know that 90% of pests come from the outside to invade your home? If you want them gone for good, the best strategy is Dayton’s Quarterly Perimeter Pest Control to keep pests out of your home throughout the year. The initial service includes treating your home’s interior and an extensive exterior treatment of your home’s foundation, under the eaves, window sills, door openings, garbage cans, and garage door openings. For future treatments, an added convenience is that you don’t have to be at home when the outdoor area is treated around your home’s exterior. There’s still time to take advantage of Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program with guaranteed results. Mosquitoes are very aggressive in the early evening, which is the same time you are probably relaxing on the deck and grilling out. Why suffer from aggravating bites and the risk of disease mosquitoes carry? Take advantage of $25 off the initial treatment for Quarterly Perimeter Pest Control with an annual agreement or $25 off the initial service for Mosquito Control with an agreement through October. Other services include radon testing and mitigation, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation, monthly/ quarterly/one-time pest control services, pest control for termites/bed bugs/ladybugs/rodents/ wasps/bees/carpenter bees, fungicide/moldicide treatments, and VA/FHA termite inspections. Open Up Your Outdoor Living Spaces GET READY TO let the outdoors in! The sun is

getting stronger, and the days are getting longer, and with it will come the endless ways available to have fun right in your own backyard. Are you really enjoying your outdoor spaces to their full potential? In most parts of the country, if your outdoor space doesn’t include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments in their homes creating outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially designed to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners away from their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect solution to this dilemma by combining indoor and outdoor spaces and promoting the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of annoying bugs that come out in the evenings. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom color and wood grain finishes that help seamlessly blend the screens into interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are needed. For more information about retractable screen options, and to discover how to combine your home’s indoor and outdoor living spaces, visit www. phantomscreens.com.

July in the Garden WOW, HOW HAS half the year gone by so quickly? Now we’re getting into those days when gardening isn’t as fun anymore. I know it’s hot, but you can’t stop working in your yard now or all the hard work you’ve done so far will be wasted. It’s easiest to go out early in the morning or late in the evening to do your dirt playing, then reward yourself with a nice cold beverage. ›› Let’s start out talking about water. We’ve had rain, but we’re still below average. If you planted new shrubs and trees this spring, you’ll need to be vigilant about watering. If a plant seems to be struggling, you may need to dig down a few inches and see what’s going on. Is the ground soggy at root level or is it dry as a bone? Always check, don’t assume! Also, sprinkler systems are great for grass and flowers but don’t provide adequate moisture for trees and shrubs. Those require less frequent, deep watering once or twice a week. Drag out the hose and water!

›› The insect population this year is like something out of a horror movie. Hollies and yews have been attacked by scale at levels I’ve never seen, and flowering shrubs and plants are so covered with aphids that you can’t see the stems. Clouds of white flies swarm, and spider mites are in every nook and cranny. Treat problems as soon as you see them to avoid plant damage. Hard to kill bugs like scale will need to be treated with a systemic product, which is absorbed into the plant. ›› Fungal diseases are also prevalent this year. Check for powdery mildew, leaf spots, and rust. Treat plants with a fungicide before damage spreads. Good plant hygiene is also critical. Get fallen leaves and debris away from the plant ASAP so spores don’t release into the ground. Cut away any diseased or broken branches. Dense plants may need to be thinned to allow more air circulation. ›› Be sure you’re treating the correct

problem! It’s not unusual for a customer to be treating a plant for insects when it’s actually a fungus that’s causing holes in the foliage. If you’re not positive, bring us a sample to identify. ›› Remember, don’t spray any product during the heat of the day or when the sun is shining directly on the plant. It causes a chemical burn. Waiting on dusk is also less dangerous to the bees. ›› Some of your annuals may be looking a little ratty by now. Try giving them a shearing and a good fertilizing. That will often perk them back up. If not, we keep a good selection of many annuals throughout the summer for replacements. ›› It’s time for summer perennials! Daisies, coneflowers, and rudbeckia are putting on a show along with garden phlox and daylilies. Fall bloomers will start arriving soon. This is a great time to pick new additions to your flower beds. ›› Keep your veggies harvested to keep them producing. Regular water is critical right now. Soaker hoses are best, with hand watering coming in second. Sprinklers aren’t a great way to water, because they wet the foliage, setting up the conditions for disease. Mulch will help maintain moisture levels and reduce splashing, which also spreads disease. ›› July is not a good month for pruning. If you haven’t cut back spring flowering shrubs, don’t do it now. Most have started setting bloom for next year. Summer bloomers should be starting to show off and should not be trimmed until they finish blooming. Evergreens can be lightly trimmed if they’ve lost their shape, but nothing should be severely pruned. You can, however, cut out any dead branches. ›› Many of us had hydrangeas that took a beating over the winter. Most of my macrophyllas were killed to the ground but have grown back from the roots. Unfortunately, this means we won’t have many blooms this year. Be patient, and leave them alone. You can cut the old dead stalks off if you haven’t done that yet, but don’t prune them unless you absolutely have to. I never trim mine, so don’t think this is something you have to do. ›› I hate weeds. I have several flower beds, and I sometimes feel that if I turn my back on them for 10 minutes, a weed will miraculously appear. Stay on top of them by weeding frequently. If you applied Preen early in the spring, it’s time to reapply. ›› Don’t forget the birds! Keep your birdbath clean and full, and clean out feeders regularly to prevent toxic mold. Happy Fourth of July, and enjoy your summer!

the month? Seriously? Well, this is no ordinary ground cover. Liriope muscari ‘PeeDee Ingot’ has luminous golden foliage that elevates monkey grass to an art form. Individual clumps will average a bit more than a foot tall and eventually twice that wide but never become aggressive. The tousled mounds provide a burst of color and grassy texture, particularly effective near blue or purple flowers or dark foliaged companions. While PeeDee Ingot will thrive in shade as well as sun, the gold color will dim when deprived of sunlight. On the other hand, a site too bright and dry will bleach or sear the foliage. For the best display, look for the happy medium. Like most liriope, the foliage stays effective through the winter, though it will be bedraggled by winter’s end. At that time, give it a drastic crew cut, and fresh foliage will quickly emerge. In mid to late summer, linear stalks of small lilac-blue flowers add another layer of interest. Easily grown in zones 6-10, this long-lived perennial is notably free of problems. Only poorly drained soil would give it trouble. As a bonus, clumps can be dug and divided to

You Deserve a Break… We Can Help! Most homeowners have at least one area of their home that causes frustration: Be it discolored grout behind the toilet, darkened, dingy brick pavers, or the traffic pattern in the carpet through the living room and down the hall.

BUT, DON’T BE too hard on yourself. Traditional cleaning methods and overthe-counter cleaning supplies simply can’t get to the root of the problem. Cleaning with a mop, a scrub brush, or a rag can actually push soil deeper within your floors, aggravating an already irritating situation. The real problem lies below the surface of your floors, and no matter how much you scrub or what cleaning supplies you use, deeply embedded soil will remain, leaving homeowners irritated and dissatisfied. That’s where Surface Doc can help. Here’s

tile & grout

showers & glass doors

how they do it. First, they pre-spray your floors with an emulsifier to start the soil breakdown process. Then, they use a combination of high heat (to open the pores of your floor), pressure, and extraction simultaneously to remove even deep-down build-up. Without the heat and extraction method, one can only penetrate the topmost layer of the floor. But, with up to 3,000 psi and 15 pounds of suction, dirt is literally blasted out of your tile and taken away immediately. In addition, Surface Doc uses purified water to leave no residue. Once your home has been properly deepcleaned and sanitized, Surface Doc offers homeowners the option to seal floors. Sealer provides the ultimate protection for most hard surfaces, including natural stone floors, countertops, tile and grout, and many others. The sealer particles penetrate deep within the porous surface of your floor, creating a deep barrier of protection. This process protects your floors and hard surfaces from staining, efflorescence, cleaning chemicals, traffic,

countertops

and sunlight. After a proper sealing, your floors need only be wiped clean with hot water and a microfiber pad. Say goodbye to harsh chemicals and stringent cleaning methods, and say hello to a beautiful home that is easy to maintain. Surface Doc (and owner John CO-OWNER Fitzwilliam) looks John forward to helping Fitzwilliam your home reach its finest potential. Call them at 865-567-1986 or visit them at www.SurfaceDoc.com.

Garage Renovation Trends Rev up a Garage

Home

WE’VE ALL SEEN IT: The house that is the epitome of curbside appeal – until the garage door opens, revealing a disorganized mess. Most of us care more about what our neighbors think than we’d like to admit, and the inside of the garage is the part of our home interior they’re most likely to see. The garage is often the largest room in a house, the least expensive to remodel, and the space most likely to serve a dual purpose as a man cave, workshop, etc. That’s why garage enhancements are the fastest growing segment of home renovation. Top trends in garage enhancements and organization, as seen by PremierGarage of Knoxville, are: Upgrading the Floor with Coating Finishing the garage floor extends a home’s usable living space. Not only does the floor coating improve the garage’s overall look and feel, but it also provides protection and makes it easier to clean, significantly reducing the amount of dirt and grease that’s tracked into the home. Including Overhead Storage While a typical two-car garage is about 400 square feet, this translates to several hundred cubic feet if you think vertically. Overhead storage is easily accessed and allows you to take advantage of every inch available. Adding Garage Cabinetry for Storage In addition to maximizing storage space, wall cabinets provide excellent protection for items by keeping out dust and household pests. Enclosed cabinets with clothing rods and cedar linings offer a great place to store winter clothing and items you only use occasionally. Popular cabinet finishes include woodgrain, powder-coated, and stainless steel. All can be coordinated to match a floor’s color scheme. Using Slatwall with Hooks and Fixtures Slatwall with various hooks, baskets, and other accessories organizes tools, athletic equipment, and other items while still keeping them easy to access. Again, think vertically to get items off the floor. The right side of the garage is ideal for slatwall because it keeps the left side clear for drivers exiting vehicles.

Nix the Neutrals Undoing open house décor to make a new home your own

When selling a house, the mantra for most is neutral, neutral, neutral. To help potential new owners envision themselves moving in, real estate experts remind sellers to de-personalize their homes. That means removing family photos and mementos and replacing favorite color schemes with more vanilla shades and hues. So as a new homeowner, how do you begin to de-neutralize your new house to make it your new home?

Color Your World

It’s a pretty safe bet that as the previous homeowners were preparing to sell, they went through the house and repainted with shades of beige or gray. While nice for an open house, these colors can be a little impersonal. It’s also likely the homeowners didn’t invest in the highest quality paint, saving that money for their new home. Therefore, one of the best ways to make your mark is by giving rooms a fresh coat of paint. Choose colors that reflect your personality and style, and don’t be afraid to select bolder hues. Darker, more vibrant colors work well, especially for accent walls or rooms that could use some drama, like your guest bath. Spend the money on a premium paint to ensure you see excellent hide (the paint’s ability to conceal the color under it) and coverage (how far you can paint with a gallon).

Treat Your Windows Well

When it comes to the f loors, most real estate agents advise their clients to replace carpeting before the house goes on the market, particularly if 56

it’s worn or on the more colorful side. As a result, you can hold off on the expense of putting in new carpet and instead look at window treatments. Once you paint, the blinds, curtains, or cornice boards that were part of the open house staging efforts may not fit in with your décor. Consider the function you need from window treatments. Do you need to create privacy as well as style? Is blocking light essential, like in a bedroom, or would sheer drapes be an option? Will the treatments be used in a child’s room, making cordless blinds important? Examining the function will help you determine the type of window treatment to select. Once you decide what type of window treatment is best suited for a particular room and window, you can begin to look at fabrics and colors that complement your paint choice and provide your new home with a fine finishing touch.

Bring in Your Belongings

During the open house, you used your imagination to picture where your family heirlooms and prized possessions would be placed. Now it’s time to turn that picture into a reality. Collect your photos, mirrors, artwork, and other objects. Then look around your new house to create a blueprint of what to hang or place and where. Sticky notes provide an easy method for

Collect your photos, mirrors, artwork, and other objects. Then look around your new house to create a blueprint of what to hang or place and where. remembering where items will reside. To create your desired look, you may need to replace photo matting or frames to match or contrast with new paint colors. You’ll also want to look at room features, like fireplaces or angled walls and ceilings, and position objects to highlight them, rather than hide them. Now that your home is no longer an open house, you can feel free to nix the neutrals, and instead use color, style, and accessories to identify it as yours. While the previous homeowners may have done many things to get the house show-ready, you have to evaluate the quality of products used, the integrity of the workmanship, and, most importantly, the feeling you want your home to evoke as you embark on projects. Once you do, you’ll see what you need to change and what can stay the same so you feel happy in your new home.

Thanks to the growing prominence of tablets, magazines have been fitted with a new layer of functionality. For Art’s Sake!

WE CAN HELP YOU select just the right fur-

nishings for any room in your home – perhaps an imported rug, a table lamp, and some additional home décor items. But the wall art you select is what helps bring your newly decorated room to life. At Consign To Design, we feature hundreds of prints, oils, and other pieces of framed art that would make a welcomed addition to many rooms in your home. Many of the pieces we offer are from prominent, well-known artists, including Robert Tino, Ben Hampton, and Jim Gray. In fact, some are signed by the artist and are signed, limited editions. If you are in the market for art, I’d encourage you to visit us at Consign To Design. Whether you need to add a piece or two or replace an existing piece, we can help. It might also prove to be helpful if you photograph where the proposed piece will be displayed along with the room furnishings. We would be happy to offer our suggestions. Like our furniture and home décor items, you’re going to love the savings you’ll discover with our art. As you undoubtedly know from experience, art has two costs – the art itself and the cost of the frame. But you’ll find that the cost of the art pieces we offer at Consign To Design, for both the art and frame, is typically far less than the original cost of just the frame itself. Art is really a timeless treasure. Displayed on walls, and apart from an occasional dusting, framed art looks as good today as it did the day it left the gallery. So for art’s sake, if you’re looking for a single art piece or multiple pieces, visit Consign To Design, where you’ll discover great art and even greater prices.

Home Design: The Value of the Ideal Exterior Color WHEN IT COMES to designing a home – whether it’s new construction or a renovation – choosing beautiful exterior colors and complementary accent hues is critical to creating an appealing household. To select the right colors for your home, view siding colors as an exterior project tool that both turns a home into a showpiece and increases its value. Color and architecture trends vary from city to city across the United States. The homes and buildings within a neighborhood define its character and, in some ways, culture. Before deciding on the best design, take into consideration the local geography and design trends. Here are four general recommendations to help a homeowner determine the best color choices for a home: » Location – Consider the neighborhood as a whole. Think about the next-door neighbor and the homes down the street. Regardless of the neighborhood, the streetscape – sizes and facades of homes, landscape architecture, balance of light and shade – plays

a role in creating an idyllic neighborhood and affects the value of individual homes and communities overall. The natural surroundings also play a significant part in color selection. For example, a green wooded area would blend better colors with earth tones than a home near the blues and grays of the ocean. » Color combinations – Selecting the right combination of colors for a home varies, but a good rule of thumb is to use three to six,

Home

depending on the siding and trim of the home. A best practice is to avoid selecting more than two siding colors, one trim color, and one accent color for features like doors and shutters. » Balance of color choices – A home’s visual balance can be disrupted by color hues that don’t mix or match. The eye is naturally drawn to light colors, so consider pairing a brighter, lighter garage door with a darker siding shade. Contractors, builders, or remodelers can help guide homeowners choose multiple siding colors and trim hues that not only create a classic look for a home, but also help it blend in with its surrounding environment. » Color performance – A home is a reflection of the person and family in it. It’s also an investment. If exterior products are both functionally and aesthetically sound, they offer a greater curb appeal, which can also help with resale value when the time comes. From the primary color of the home to the shades of the architectural details, a homeowner can create value with design using the tips above.

ENJOY MEAD’S LAKE AT IJAMS NATURE CENTER

N THE PLAY Pygmalion by George

Bernard Shaw, a beleaguered, overlooked Cockney girl is transformed into a refined beautiful lady. A similar transformation has occurred to Mead’s Lake at Ijams Nature Center. The one-time working marble quarry had become a beleaguered site, an illegal dump. Acquired by Knox County in 2001, Ijams signed a management agreement to clean up the trash, build a network of trails, and open it to the public. Flash forward 13 years. Today the site is home to a host of recreational activities, and the lake itself is postcard pretty. Mead’s Lake is as beautiful as it is dramatic, bordered on the west by a sheer cliff that towers 180 feet above the water, and the best place to see the lake is from the water. This summer Ijams has embarked on something else new: Outdoor Adventure Camp! With the help of generous partners, including West Knoxville Sertoma Club, Boys and Girls Club of the Tennessee Valley, Grassroots Outdoor Alliance, Horny Toad Activewear, Pelican International, and River Sports Outfitters, Ijams will be able to offer camp scholarships for kids in 60

traditionally under-served communities. Ijams Outdoor Adventure Camp features hiking, biking, canoeing, paddle boarding, kayaking, rock climbing, and a host of other outdoor activities all designed to connect kids to nature. Are you too old for Adventure Camp? Well, River Sports Outfitters is at Mead’s Lake through the summer renting canoes, kayaks, and the very popular paddleboards. Rental times are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 4 to 8 pm, Saturday 10 am to 8 pm, and Sunday 12 to 8 pm. The rentals are $11 per hour and $35 for a full day. Canoes hold two people; the kayaks and paddleboards are solo affairs. Can’t get enough of Mead’s? Then join River Sports Outfitters as they host family campouts at the lake on Saturday, July 12, and Saturday, July 26. Families get the opportunity to camp overnight under the stars, near the water. Pre-registration is required. For more information, call 865-523-0066.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

I will be hosting a morning indoor Birding & Breakfast talking about “Secrets of Backyard Birds” on Saturday, July 5, and a “Discover the Urban Wilderness” hike on Saturday, July 12. I’ll also be leading two Paddle-Abouts at Mead’s Quarry Lake on Saturday, July 19, and Saturday, July 26. Sabrina DeVault will be hosting a Hikers’ Happy Hour on Tuesday, July 29. Plus, green thumb Peg Beute will be hosting a gardening workshop, Dr. Louise Conrad, the Ijams veterinarian, will be leading a Walk n’ Wag

doggie outing, and Ijams plans a special Dog Day on Saturday, July 19. Creature Feature animal programs are also a regular happening on Saturdays. History

BY TODD MORGAN

Power of Place

OME OF MY fondest memories of growing up in East Tennessee are tied to places. I vividly remember shopping with my mother in downtown Knoxville and the stories that went along with each place we visited. Like Kress’s, where she bought her records and how they used to play them for her before leaving to make sure there were no scratches. How my great aunt Teresa would lunch at the S & W, which seemed so grand to me at a young age. I would hear about my grandparents buying produce at the Market House and tried to visualize what the building must have looked like. And then there was seeing the palatial Tennessee Theatre for the first time, where my mom and her friends watched the latest movies… for 50 cents. The memories extend beyond downtown Knoxville to my father’s family farm in Grainger County, where my cousins and I would play in the barn or rummage through their old log home. The log home was a fascinating house that was once part of a larger plantation and known then as “the bee house,” because the hives were kept in the attic to deter thieves, and the bees would travel in and out of special holes in the gables. There are, of course, many more memories, and it is a regular occurrence for me to pass by an old house, a church, a barn, or through entire neighborhoods and have these personal experiences brought back into the forefront of my mind. The power of such places should never be underestimated – not just on a personal level, but collectively as a community. I appreciate people who work to protect these structures, neighborhoods, and landscapes and share their unique stories. Their efforts result in distinctive and interesting communities we can be proud of. The kind of places I want to visit and also call home. This is why I am excited to be back home and working with Knox Heritage and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance. Replacing Ethiel Garlington as Director of Preservation Field Services is no small undertaking, but ETPA has had an impact in the 16 county region around Knoxville, and we want to continue growing that effort. ETPA was started in 2009 in partnership with Knox Heritage and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Our board is comprised of representatives from Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. Last April the annual East Tennessee’s Endangered Heritage List called attention to 14 significant sites in need of not being forgotten. We will host two of Knox Heritage’s 62

Summer Suppers this year at Elkmont and on a train in Oak Ridge (both sellouts!). This November (6-8) we will host the 6th annual East Tennessee Preservation Conference in Oak Ridge, which will assemble enthusiasts of historic preservation, downtown revitalization, heritage tourism, and community and economic development. All of these efforts, and more, emphasize the power of place in our daily lives and how a better quality of life and more stable economies can result from good preservation practices. I have had the opportunity to visit many different towns, cities, and rural areas and am convinced beyond the shadow of a doubt that we need to do all we can to preserve the unique characteristics of our built environments, as well as our distinctive natural settings to be truly successful. It’s what makes each individual place like no other in the world. Plus, it’s an economic development approach based on

assets already in place, just waiting to be taken advantage of. Preservation is about recognizing the contribution significant places have to our culture and quality of life and finding creative, sustainable ways to keep them vibrant and contributing to local economies so their stories can continue to be told.

Each month contributors from the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance (ETPA) write an article for Everything Knoxville celebrating the rich heritage of our region. ETPA is a regional historic preservation organization that partners with Knox Heritage to serve a 16 county region. The Fox Theatre in Atlanta is world-renowned as a concert and event venue like no other. In 1928, the Fox was originally conceived as a home for Atlanta’s Shriners organization. To create a headquarters befitting the group’s prominent social status, the Shriners looked to the ancient temples of the Far East to inspire a mosque-style structure befitting their stature. Storied architectural gems like the Alhambra in Spain and Egypt’s Temple of Kharnak heavily influenced the building’s elaborate and intensely ornate design. Bursting with soaring domes, minarets, and sweeping archways, the exterior of the building gave way to stunning gold leaf details, sumptuous textiles, and exquisite trompe l’oeil art (an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create optical illusions) inside. Ultimately, the design was so fantastic that it became more of a financial burden than the Shriners could bear. Shortly before its com-

pletion, the Shriners leased their beautiful auditorium to William Fox, a movie mogul who had launched his empire by building theatres across the country to meet America’s insatiable affection for the new moving pictures that were sweeping the nation. By the end of the 1920s, these aptlynamed “movie palaces” were an integral part of nearly every community in the country, each one more gilded and exquisite than the next. Developers like Fox spared no expense, understanding all too well that these movie palaces were the gateway to a brave new world, transporting eager audiences to exotic, elegant settings they could only imagine. With Fox’s financial backing (the project cost more than $3 million, the equivalent of nearly $40 million today), the 250,000 square foot Fox Theatre was completed, with the crowning addition of “Mighty Mo,” the 3,622-pipe Möller organ that remains the largest Möller theatre organ in the world even today. The Fox opened on Christmas Day in 1929 to a sold-out crowd, premiering Steamboat Willie, Disney’s first cartoon starring Mickey Mouse.

But the rocky fate of the Fox was still in flux. By the late 1960s, beautiful landmark movie palaces like the Fox were falling out of favor, replaced by suburban movieplexes built for efficiency and multiple-screen showings. Confronted with the possibility of losing their beloved landmark, the residents of Atlanta sprang into action and created a non-profit called Atlanta Landmarks and launched the now-legendary “Save The Fox” campaign. Atlanta Landmarks (now called Fox Theatre, Inc.) continues to run the theatre today, making it one of an elite group of not-for-profit theatres in the country, committed to making performance art accessible to everyone. Since the “Save The Fox” campaign, the Fox has become a destination for audiences, historians, and tourists alike, all of whom flock to the renowned theatre to see its grandeur firsthand. Now primarily a venue for a huge variety of headlining events, the “Fabulous Fox” (as it is affectionately known) has truly become a legend in its own right. In addition, the theatre’s lavish ballrooms, lounges, and outdoor terraces are perpetually in high demand for fashionable weddings and special events taking place in Atlanta. Wisconsin Dells T R AV E L A M E R I C A :

From Logging Town, to Steamboat Tour Central, to “The Waterpark Capital of the World®!”

oday’s toddlers, tweens, and teenagers think of Wisconsin Dells as a shiny, new vacation spot. Little do they know that the Dells is more than 150 years old! It was back in 1856 that Wisconsin Dells, then known as Kilbourn City in honor of the railroad’s president, was incorporated. 500 Million Years Ago

You’ll be amazed how we can effectively condense 500 million years of history into a paragraph or two. But this is important, because you have to look that far back to understand how Wisconsin Dells came to be what it is today. During the Cambrian Period, this community was the sandy shore of an ancient sea. Over time, the sand was compacted, and percolating groundwater cemented the sand into rock. That rock went virtually untouched for millions of years. Fast forward, way forward, to 19,000 years ago, when a glacier extended to within four miles east of the area, never touching 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2014

the Dells. That glacier melted about 15,000 years ago and formed Glacial Lake Wisconsin, a lake about the size of Utah’s Great Salt Lake and as deep as 150 feet. The last ice that held back the waters of Glacial Lake Wisconsin began to melt. The failed ice dam unleashed a catastrophic flood; the lake’s depth dropped to 50 feet. The meltwaters cut deep, narrow gorges and unusual rock formations into the sandstone and formed the steep-sided canyons and bluffs you see today lining the Wisconsin River. The flood most likely cut the gorges in the Dells in a matter of days or weeks as the swift water eroded away the soft sandstone.

Native American Roots

An entire book could be devoted to the history of the Native American culture in Wisconsin Dells. The area has been inhabited by native people for 2,000 years, and probably longer. You see their spirit in petroglyphs and pictographs carved and painted into local rock formations and in ceremonial and burial mounds. While nearly all of the mounds have been destroyed by farming and floods, you can still find some examples of this ancient culture known as the “Effigy Mound Builders.” One treasure is at the Kingsley Bend Wayside on Highway 16, where Photos courtesy of Wisconsin Dells Visitor & Convention Bureau

“dalles” that means “layers of flat rock” to describe the bluff rock formations. The then local newspaper, the Wisconsin Mirror, offered a most accurate prophecy when it concluded in 1856 that “the wild, romantic scenery of the ‘Dells’ will always make them a place of resort for seekers of pleasure.”

Log Rolling

The community was also a busy logging route in Wisconsin, with pines from the north being moved to larger cities in the south. It was dangerous work, given the rapids and primitively designed dams. In fact, at one point, the whole volume of the Wisconsin River was squeezed into a 50-foot wide rocky, narrow gulch. The area’s first bridge, built in the 1850s, turned logging into a tourist attraction. About that time, the first railroad bridge was built as well. By the end of the century, a new dam, still in place today, was constructed, and the successful destiny of the community was sealed. there are a group of some 20 burial and effigy mounds, including two 100-foot long bears, a panther with a tail as long as a football field, and an eagle with a 200-foot wingspan. The history of the Ho-Chunk, the largest Native American Nation in Wisconsin Dells, once called Winnebago by the French fur traders, includes immense hardship and tremendous rebuilding. In 1832, the U.S. Government began its infamous removal policy, stating that all Indians must be moved west of the Mississippi River. A series of deadly conflicts deeply scarred the culture. The HoChunk were forced to leave their land and head to northwestern Iowa and south-central Minnesota. They were again moved in 1863 to a desolate reservation in South Dakota. It wasn’t until 1873, when the removal policy was reversed, that the Ho-Chunk could file claims to land in the area. By then, Wisconsin Dells had already become a site for Ho-Chunk pow-wows and dancing, with tourists coming to enjoy the festivals and appreciate the culture. Today the 4,900 members of the HoChunk Sovereign Nation hold title to 2,000

A Summer Evening in Wisconsin Dells

acres of land, continuing anew their dedication to preserve the Ho-Chunk culture.

The Birth of the Dells

In 1856, the town was incorporated as Kilbourn City in honor of the railroad’s president. The name did not stick. In 1931, it was officially changed to Wisconsin Dells, the name the locals and tourists had always used, with “Wisconsin” derived from the Native American word meaning “dark rushing waters,” and “Dells” mimicking the French word

During the 1930s and 1940s, it wasn’t unusual to see tourists and Native Americans line up to watch folks descend on the steamboats for a trip to the Stand Rock Indian Ceremonial. In 1946, Mel Flath brought the first WWII land-to-water vehicles known as Ducks to Wisconsin Dells and set up a tour company. In the 1950s, crowds were first treated to the famous Tommy Bartlett ski show. Attractions like Storybook Gardens and Fort Dells entertained thousands in the following decades, the precursor to the Dells as we know it today. In 1994, Stan Anderson, the owner of the Polynesian Resort Hotel, decided to put a roof over a water attraction at this property, and the first indoor water park in the country was christened. One year later, both the Wilderness Resort and Treasure Island water parks opened. A few years after that, Great Wolf Lodge expanded its offerings. In 2000, the Kalahari Resort opened and then quickly expanded its indoor water park. The rest, they say, is history. July 2014 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

This most perfect of romantic comedies centers on Shakespeare’s wittiest lovers, Beatrice and Benedick, two people determined to avoid the foolishness of love at all costs! The verbal fireworks between these two make up some of Shakespeare’s best writing. Along the way we meet more lovers, distraught fathers, villains, and the 16th century’s answer to the Three Stooges – Dogberry and the Watch. Of course, like all good comedies, everyone ends up married – more or less.

One of Shakespeare’s earliest tragedies, and far and away his darkest, most bloody play, Titus Andronicus is like an Elizabethan horror movie. Interestingly, it was also Shakespeare’s most popular play during his lifetime. The story rests on a struggle for control of the Roman Empire, but the play is awash in blood – beheadings, mutilations, and horrible crimes against humanity.

Meredith Layton BUTTERMILK SKY PIE SHOP BY C O U RTN EY CRA IG

YOU MIGHT CALL Meredith Layton a pie

expert. She grew up eating her grandmother’s pies, learned how to make them herself, and now owns her own pie shop with her husband, Scott. Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop has been in business in Bearden since November 2013. A second location is in Turkey Creek. “My nanny made pies as her signature dessert when I was growing up, so I ate plenty of them,” said Meredith. “When Scott and I began thinking of baked goods with mass appeal that a secure business model could be built around, things kept pointing back to pie. Lots of people have a heartfelt memories attached to pie – maybe someone special in their family who baked them. Also, pies are so adaptable for seasons and holidays and make the most of ingredients when they are at their best. With the addition of our ‘cutie pies’ – four-inch pies – to the menu, allowing for single servings, it was a go!” Before getting into the pie business, Meredith earned her bachelor’s and master’s

degrees in speech language pathology from the University of Memphis. Now her days involve a little bit of everything, beginning with answering emails and updating Facebook and Twitter for her stores. “From there, the day usually involves driving my black Yukon XL around to each store, dropping off items,” said Meredith. “Now that we are in the process of franchising the stores, I’m busy with franchising meetings and all the extra work it entails. To sum up, no day is typical for a business owner. Every day is full and different!” This kind of variety is exactly what Meredith loves. “I’ve never been one to like monotony,” she said. “I love the branding and marketing aspects of our stores the best. It’s always been a passion for me. And, of course, the pie! Who wouldn’t want to have pie tasting as an official job description? We can truly create our own happiness when it comes to a profession in our country!” As many business owners can attest, there are

plenty of challenges that come with the territory. “For me, the biggest challenge is the proverbial balancing act,” said Meredith. “Our team is great about keeping Scott and I grounded. We are stretched thin with our two pie shops, The Cupcakery, our family (including two sons – Bo, 16, and Tabb, 11, as well as three dogs), and the upcoming franchise. I guess the biggest challenge is keeping my car empty enough of pie shop paraphernalia to give my kids a spot to sit!” Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop is located at 5400 Kingston Pike in Bearden and 11525 Parkside Drive in Turkey Creek. Keri Redd C R E AT I V E R E F L E C T I O N S YOU KNOW THE SAYING “behind every great man, there’s a great woman.” Well, that describes Creative Reflections, a mirror and glass design shop located at 10700 Dutchtown Road in Knoxville. Keri and her husband, Stephen, created their Knoxville glass company to provide unique and one-of-a-kind custom mirror and glass options to their East Tennessee clients, achieving designs seen in magazines, online, or on design shows. “If you have an idea, we want to turn your vision into reality,” said Keri. “That’s why we started Creative Reflections. It all started several years ago, when I gave Stephen a ‘honey do list’ to get a piece of glass made to protect my new vanity table. Not only did he come home with the glass for my table, but he also had a new job as an estimator for a glass company. The job was a perfect fit for Stephen; he loved working with the clients, developing proposals, and learning the glass trade.” Keri recognized Stephen’s passion for designing and creating quality products, and 70

together they decided to start their own glass company. Stephen’s glass and construction experience combined with Keri’s project and business knowledge allowed them to develop a business model focusing on the design, installation, and supply of interior architectural and decorative glass products for showers, doors, walls, backsplashes, countertops, and furniture. “A typical day at Creative Reflections includes consultations, designing proposals, filling orders, fabricating glass, and installing final products,” said Keri. “Stephen is the face of Creative Reflections, personally overseeing every client’s design from conception to completion. Although I work mostly behind the scenes, the most important responsibility I have is to support Stephen every step of the way.” Creative Reflections aims to be Knoxville’s premier glass company for interior glass projects. “Every client is different with a unique vision, and I get to watch Stephen bring our clients’ concepts to life through the proposals

and installation of the final products,” said Keri. “I take pride in seeing the final products, knowing we custom fabricated one-of-a-kind glass displays to bring our clients’ visions to reality. It is truly a blessing to be able to work with my husband to manage Creative Reflections.” Creative Reflections is located at 10700 Dutchtown Road in Knoxville. and a button-down. Women can also incorporate knit shirts that will mix and match with their suit separates. For men, a sports jacket in an all-weather fabric is a good investment. Think less trend, more modern classic that will cut across many seasons. Men and women need a great blazer and some type of sweater they can dress up or down. Both men and women can mix in sweaters and cardigans to go with their separates. Look for versatile items that can take you from desk to dinner and from workdays to weekends. Also consider a dark or black jean for casual days at the office.

Dress for Success Tips for building a professional wardrobe

Whether you are a recent grad or someone reentering a professional work environment, building a work wardrobe that strikes a balance between professionalism and personal style is key. Dress for the job you want, not the job you’re being hired for. Your job description, and that of the next step up your career ladder, should be the driving force behind your apparel purchases. To get you started, here are some tips to have you dressing for the corner office.

72

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE July 2014

SUIT UP

It may sound boring, but a suit is an absolute must. Look upon your suit purchase as a long-term investment. This is not an area where you’ll want to skimp. Seasonless fabrics, like lightweight wool, worsted wool, and wool crepe, are your best bets. Purchase a suit in a classic color such as black, gray, tan, or navy blue and save the more trendy colors and patterns for your accessories. Also think about the colors in your current wardrobe and look for a suit that can be interchangeable with pieces you already own. For women, a suit with both pants and a skirt will offer more variety. You should also feel comfortable in your suit. A good fit will make you look polished, professional, and more confident. The chances of you finding a suit that fits you perfectly off the rack is slim to none, so be sure to budget some funds for tailoring.

WARDROBE BUILDING BLOCKS

You will also need some staples that will serve as wardrobe building blocks that enable you to walk right into a new job. Women should purchase two or three button-down shirts of a good fit and quality. Men may want to purchase five, if buttondowns are a staple in their field. For women, a wrap dress is a great alternative to pants

To put your best foot forward at a new job, make sure you also have professional footwear to go with your new wardrobe. Recommended are two pairs of practical shoes for day-to-day work life and one or two for more formal events, in neutral colors such as brown, gray, and black. For women, four inches should be the maximum height for a professional setting.

ACCESSORIES

Don’t forget about accessories, which can add personality to your outfits. Men should have a couple of ties with a little bit of personality, meaning different patterns or maybe a bold color. For women, necklaces and bracelets can add a pop to an outfit, but less is more when considering jewelry. Make sure you don’t forget to use an appropriate purse or messenger bag, and no matter where you live, you should have a professional trench in your wardrobe.

TAILORING AND MAINTENANCE

Once you’ve built your wardrobe, you’ll want to keep it neat and polished. To make your clothing look custom made, find a good tailor who can make small tweaks to your garments. A garment steamer, a clothes shaver, stain remover sticks, and fabric freshener sprays will help save on dry cleaning costs by helping your garments look and smell fresh. Investing in core pieces lays a solid foundation for your new professional wardrobe. You’ll create a classic yet stylish work collection that makes you feel confident and professional.

That’s corporate speak for “I hope you’ll accept this poor substitute for customer service.” I’m all for saving money and creating efficiencies, but when saving money ends up costing you money, that’s just insane. All of us are attempting to deploy our limited resources in the most productive manner possible, but hopefully not at the risk of compromising the personal relationships that are at the very foundation of the success of so many of our small businesses. I guess I’m no longer surprised when I receive these pre-recorded messages or the seemingly endless cycle of options we are asked to select from, which leads to the next list of options, and on… and on… and on. But what does surprise me today is when a real person answers the phone. Hey, all things being equal, I’ll go

with the products and services being offered by the small business that employs people and not pre-recorded messages. Ever since my megabank in Chicago, 15 years ago, began charging me $3 to speak to a human teller rather than use their automated tellers, I have observed a growing number of companies attempting to substitute automation at the expense of genuine customer service. Am I just old-fashioned? Perhaps a guy who wishes things could return to the way they were? What do they have to lose? Oh, and here’s a tip. Would you like to talk to a human the next time you need to call customer service? Just tell them you no longer wish to purchase their product or service. You’ll miraculously be transferred to a human.

The Invisible Force MOME NTUM IS A powerful thing. Webster’s defines it as a strength or force that keeps growing. Recently momentum was used frequently to describe defining moments during televised sporting events. During the French Open as well as the College Baseball playoffs, it was used to point out a possible shift in a particular game’s direction. “That play may be cause for a change in momentum,” says an announcer after a spectacular point played in a tennis game. Shortly thereafter, the player fist pumps the air. He felt it, too. While it’s powerful, it’s also invisible. Any unseen force working for or against you can be equally good or bad. Our job as individuals is to leverage momentum and make sure it is always pointing us in the right direction – forward, not backward. Recently a young friend sought advice on a decision that would impact the rest of his life. He was considering a new job, relocation, and a change in his career, which would ultimately affect key relationships. While we talked through the possibilities, we discussed momentum more than anything else. “Who is the person you want to become, and are

you walking towards him?” His excitement equaled his fear, and he knew he had to choose a direction in which to point. He took the job. A few months ago, I was at a similar crossroad. With my Christian Life Coach, I laid my skills and experiences on the table and asked her professional opinion on what to do. Recognizing my lack of momentum, I had accepted the fact that I was doing too much; therefore, being ineffective. I had to choose to let go of tasks that were difficult to part with. I, too, had to walk towards the person I longed to be instead of the person I’d become. Deep down I knew what to do but couldn’t quite make a confident decision without proper consultation. Once we discussed my passions and experiences, we came up with a plan that would create the momentum I needed. Some things I would do more,

some less, and some not at all. Once decisions were made, I had a workable plan that brought excitement. While each would require hard work and diligence, I finally had proper momentum pointing me in the right direction – forward. Momentum is created. It is undoubtedly an invisible force, often unrecognizable without proper scrutiny. It’s the result of the choices we make, surging us forward or backward. Often we fail to tap into the power we have each day, making decisions that point in the right direction. Due to my new plan, my vision became clearer, my decisions more purposeful, and my actions more affective. It felt good to have a more refined approach behind each decision. Momentum may be invisible, but it’s undeniable. Put it to work for you, and walk towards that person you know you can become. The invisible force will lead the way, and you will like the direction it leads. Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426 or at www.bethtownsend.com. Family Life

BY W E N DY JAC K S O N

When You Ask Yourself: Is My Family Normal? MANY PARENTS secretly question if

they’re doing a good job and if their family is normal and functioning properly. “Normal” is a word that can have a broad definition, especially in today’s world. Yet, there are characteristics that can help you identify if your family is functioning well. For instance, well-functioning families are supportive, caring, and loving toward one another; each person has a sense of belonging and security, and each individual feels important in the family; communication is open; each person in the family – young and old – feels respected. In addition to those basic characteristics, here are some questions you can ask yourself to help you evaluate how well your family is doing. » Is there fun within the family? Is there humor? Or do the demands of life take over and make everything serious? » Do you have clear rules in your family that are applied? Are you flexible enough to amend these rules to changes that occur in the family

as the family matures and/or when new situations arise? » Are the expectations put on each person in the family reasonable and realistic? Are they being fulfilled? » Are the personal needs of the individuals in your family being met? » Is your family able to demonstrate love, concern, trust, and caring toward one another? » Do you treat each child as an individual? » Does your family have routines, rituals, and family traditions? » As a parent, are you taking care of your own needs? » Do you demonstrate your values and morals through words and actions? There is no perfect family. There are no perfect parents. Don’t fall into the trap of comparing yourself or your family to another. There are many different types of “normal,” and what works for one family may not work for another.

All families will go through difficult periods when they will be presented with issues to work through. When those times come, change generally occurs. Change requires a period of adjustment for all involved. Some adapt quicker than others. Yet, recognize that change is a part of life, and it doesn’t mean that your family is abnormal or that it can’t continue to be well-functioning. If you feel something is awry or dysfunctional within your family, discover what the problem is, and take the steps necessary to fix it. Yet, don’t let what’s depicted by the media or the neighbors make you feel something is wrong just because you do things differently. Just like people, each family is unique. Obeying Your First Request HOW DO YOU TEACH your children

to obey your first request, and why is this important? Many parents struggle with this, and once you allow this behavior to continue, the power struggle really begins. As you read this, you might think I’m supporting the idea of parents being tyrants. Actually, what I’m supporting is the idea that when we allow our children the option of not obeying our first request, we’re doing them a great disservice. Parents, if your goals are like mine, they include teaching your children to respect authority, cope with hard things, learn to succeed, and find the joy in meeting expectations. These skills help our children be more happy and continue on their journey to self mastery. If our children don’t obey our first request, there’s only one person or couple to blame – us. It’s due to our inconsistency, lack of organization, and lack of properly informing our children that we struggle with this issue. Here are a few ideas to help your children learn how to obey your first request so they can have the confidence and self respect they need to be happy. Before you approach your children, mom and dad have to make sure they’re on the

same page. This won’t work if there’s division between parents, especially if they’re living in the same home. What needs to be decided is what the consequence will be when your children don’t obey your first request. There doesn’t need to be a warning, first offense, and final offense. There should be only one consequence, and that’s the same every time. (I recommend extra chores, privileges being taken away, etc.) Once that’s agreed upon, sit down with your children. The conversation can go something like this: “Kids, we love you. We’re proud of all the good things you do. You’re helpful, kind, and we’re really proud of who you are. We need to help you become better at something, and that’s obeying our first request. It’s important that you’re respectful and obedient when we ask you to do something. We expect you to answer us with ‘yes ma’am’ or ‘yes sir,’ then stop what you’re doing and complete what we’ve asked you to do. We’ll try to be sensitive to what you’re doing and might ask you to do it within a certain period of time, but at other times we expect you to do it immediately. Let’s practice.” (Roll play a

couple of times.) “Great, I knew you could do this. I hope we never have to give you the consequence for not obeying, but if you choose to ignore our request, this is going to be the consequence every time. Do you understand what we’re asking of you? Do you have any questions? We’re excited to watch you be successful in obeying our first request.” You’ll decide how you’ll introduce this concept and how you want your children to respond, but be as specific as possible so they know exactly what’s expected of them. As you’re consistent, your family will have more peace, more love, and more time to have fun. Try it and see.

Fat Reduction That Fits NOW THAT SUMMER has arrived, many

of us start thinking about how we are going to look in our warm weather wardrobes. Frequently, unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically proven, non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape. If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device that utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently

destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller” is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines, with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour, and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no post-treatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other non-invasive body contouring devices that can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While

Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA in 2011, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, tumescent microcannular liposuction may be the answer. This in-office, minimally invasive procedure, which utilizes only local anesthesia, was pioneered by a dermatologist in 1985 and is now considered the worldwide standard for liposuction. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are two well-known devices that have been cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). These devices serve as an enhancement to tumescent microcannular liposuction, promoting easier fat removal and better skin contraction. After SmartLipo or SlimLipo, most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated. The neck, arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with

these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Even though fat is permanently destroyed, if a patient gains weight, the fat must go somewhere, and it probably won’t go where you want it to.
