Knoxville Plastic & Craniofacial Surgery N

OTHING IN MY CAREER as a

plastic surgeon is as rewarding as the smile on the face of a patient whose life has been changed for the better as a result of their surgery. The smile of a woman whose appearance has been restored through reconstructive breast surgery, the mother whose child’s lip or palate has been repaired, or a patient whose self-esteem has been boosted thanks to an aesthetic procedure are just a few of the many patients who I get the opportunity to help on a daily basis. Regardless of whether their smile is the result of reconstructive or cosmetic surgery, it serves to reaffirm my passion for what I do everyday. My father was instrumental in launching the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in the late 1970s, and I was (and still am) inspired by the love he had for his patients and his profession. I don’t really remember a time in my life when I did not want to be a surgeon and follow in my father’s footsteps. The journey to where I am now took me from coast to coast and many points in between. I attended medical school at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, followed by a general surgery residence at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. It was then on to plastic surgery residency at the Texas Medical Center in Houston and finally to California and a craniofacial surgery fellowship at Stanford, which I completed in 2010. After being in practice in Houston for the past few years, my family and I are happy to be back in East Tennessee. My new practice, Knoxville Plastic & Craniofacial Surgery, is in the Park West Plastic Surgery building located at 9239 Park West Boulevard, Suite 202 in Knoxville. Craniofacial surgery is a subspecialty of plastic surgery you don’t often hear much about. What it means is that I spent an additional year after my plastic surgery training focusing just on surgery of the face – not only the soft tissues, but also the jaws and facial skeleton. At Knoxville Plastic & Craniofacial Surgery, patients will find an extensive array of cosmetic and facial rejuvenation procedures, in addition to complex reconstructive surgery and pediatric plastic surgery, as well as the surgical treatment of chronic headaches (migraines), which is something very few surgeons in the country are able to offer. Patients at Knoxville Plastic & Craniofacial Surgery will discover a level of compassionate 4

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2015

care from our experienced and highly skilled team, as well as a personalized level of attention that is tailored to each individual patient. Unlike most plastic surgery practices, I personally perform each and every procedure in my practice. There is no “one size fits all” treatment that works the same for everyone, whether it is an injectable filler, Botox®, or surgery. Each patient’s anatomy is unique, and your results can be enhanced when a procedure is performed by a physician who is highly trained in all aspects of facial anatomy. I am also excited to be using a state-of-theart 3D imaging system (the Canfield Vectra XT) for many of the procedures I perform. This system, which I use in every consultation possible, allows me to view and modify any changes you and I are considering. Whether it is a breast augmentation, a rhinoplasty, or an injectable procedure, you and I can see in three dimensions what these enhancements will look like before committing to anything.

Most of all, my family and I are happy to call East Tennessee home, and we are looking forward to offering patients of the region the state-of-the-art, compassionate care they deserve. For more information, call me at 865-5909409 or visit www.drjasonhall.com.

MonaLisa Touch® RESTORING HEALTH, RENEWING HOPE

M

ONALISA TOUCH® is the

most exciting and important technology advancement for female pelvic floor health in nearly 20 years. This office-based fractional CO2 laser therapy is restoring pelvic health and renewing hope for thousands of patients. Breast cancer survivors are often unable to take estrogens and experience progressive difficulty with atrophy, vaginal dryness, pain with intercourse, and daily discomfort. This deterioration in quality of life is discouraging for patients who have already gone through great difficulty to beat their breast cancer. Such was the case for Carolyn Mitchell before treatment with MonaLisa Touch®. “Shortly after my first MonaLisa Touch® treatment I noticed improvement,” said Carolyn. “I felt less dry and irritated and experienced more daily comfort. As time has passed, I am still enjoying the added improvement in bladder function and decreased urinary frequency. It is exciting that there is a treatment option available with no risk to all females, including breast cancer survivors.” Lichen Sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes itching, burning, pain, and scarring of vulvar tissue and often creates daily misery for patients. Other than topical steroid creams, there has been little else to offer these patients. Linda Wallace experienced four years of pain and difficulty in spite of using all conventional therapy before treatment with MonaLisa Touch® 8

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2015

dual probe therapy. “The MonaLisa Touch® has been a ray of hope in a desperate situation,” said Linda. “It has already stopped the terrible itching that Lichen Sclerosus causes, and my hope is for continued improvement with the MonaLisa Touch® procedure. My desire is that it will slow or, better yet, completely stop the progression of the condition so I can continue to have my already improved quality of life moving forward. I strongly urge anyone with Lichen Sclerosus to make an appointment with the Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine and discuss this with Dr. Dell or Dr. McCollum. It could be life changing for you, just as it has been for me.” Nearly half of all women suffer from dryness and vulvarovaginal atrophy, now called Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM). As the new terminology implies, urinary discomfort, urgency frequency, burning, and incontinence are often part of this condition. Even for patients who are able to use estrogen therapies, these symptoms are often not adequately treated. These symptoms often worsen progressively over time. Lisa Hardin, an active, healthy wife and mother, experienced many of these symptoms, and reduced overall quality of life was the result. Having had only the first of three office-based treatment sessions thus far, she is already noticing significant improvement. “When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is,” said Lisa. “This was

my first thought while researching the MonaLisa Touch® as a treatment option for my menopausal symptoms. I couldn’t believe that three easy, quick, and painless treatments could improve my quality of life so much. My homework led me to Dr. Dell at the Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine. Dr. Dell’s impressive credentials in this field of female pelvic medicine, along with his nationally recognized expertise as one of only three training centers in the United States for the MonaLisa Touch® procedure, confirmed my decision to have this treatment at the Institute. No regrets here; I am more than thrilled with the results already!” To learn how MonaLisa Touch® can restore your health and renew your hope, call 865-7694488 or visit www.mypelvicmedicine.com.

U.S. Breast Cancer Statistics ABOUT ONE in eight women (about 12%)

in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during the course of her lifetime. » In 2015, an estimated 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 60,290 new cases of non-invasive (in-situ) breast cancer. » Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. In 2015, it’s estimated that just under 30% of newly diagnosed cancers in women will be breast cancers. » In 2015, there are more than 2.8 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. This includes women currently being treated and women who have finished treatment. » About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations. » The most significant risk factors for breast cancer are gender (being a woman)

and age (growing older). Breast cancer is a diagnosis that strikes far too many women in the United States. While devastating, the great news is that breast cancer survival rates have never been higher as a result of treatment advances, early detection through screening, and increased awareness. Breast cancer survivors know, however, that beating breast cancer is not the end of a long, hard journey, but rather it is often just the beginning. Nearly 50% of postmenopausal women experience decreased quality of life due to vulvovaginal atrophy, dryness, burning, pain with intercourse, and a range of bladder symptoms, including urgency, frequency, and incontinence. Conventional therapy involving estrogen replacement is not an option for many breast cancer survivors, leaving them with limited options for progressively worsening symptoms. This affects the patient’s family and loved ones as well. MonaLisa Touch® represents the most important advancement for restoring female pelvic health and renewing hope. This fractional CO2 laser therapy is office based, quick,

painless, drug and hormone free, and requires no downtime or recovery for the patient. Developed in Italy, the treatment has been available throughout Europe and Australia, and now nearly 20,000 patients have been treated worldwide with tremendous results. Dr. Jeffrey R. Dell Dr. Dell at the Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine is one of only three training centers in the U.S. where all providers must be trained before beginning to perform the procedure. Virtually all questions, issues, or clinical scenarios in the U.S. are funneled through Dr. Dell and the other two training centers on a weekly basis, providing an unparalleled knowledge of the technology and expertise at the teaching centers. Practicing gynecology in Knoxville since 1983 has been an honor and a privilege. Offering solutions for the healthcare problems and concerns of my patients is one of the most rewarding aspects of my profession. Breast cancer is a disease that has affected far too many of my patients. The lack of treatment options for the symptoms of vaginal atrophy in my breast cancer patients who have lost a sense of femininity in more than one way has been deeply disappointing throughout the years. MonaLisa Touch®, a highly effective new office-based therapy, is the most exciting new technology that can reverse these symptoms and offer patients a reason to celebrate returning to the quality of life they experienced before breast cancer. This technology stimulates a regenerating and reparative process in the vaginal and external tissues, returning them to premenopausal health. Since the relocation of my practice this year to the Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine, I continue to offer comprehensive gynecology, including office-based evaluation and treatment of abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, contraception, and well woman care. An Emotional Transformation

O

The wearable solution for women with fine or thinning hair

UR HAIR is our most versatile fash-

ion accessory, as it goes with every outfit we select. It’s an integral part of our self-esteem and self-image; great hair is often the difference between self-confidence and self-consciousness and can be the difference between enjoying a night on the town and staying home. Until recently no add-on hair systems have ever really addressed the top and crown of the head. For women with fine, thin hair – whether the result of chemotherapy, an imbalance of hormones, blood thinner/pressure medicine, thyroid problems, menopause, stress, or simply being born with the thin hair gene – there traditionally have been few options. “Many of our Evolve Volumizer clients are recovering from chemotherapy and the side effect of hair loss. Once medically released, a woman can have a volumizer and retain her hairstyle while her hair returns to her original style,” said Stacey Handel, owner of Garde Bien, who specializes in a variety of hair replacement options. The Evolve Volumizer is a nonsurgical, integrated hair replacement system. It consists of

100% human hair that’s lightweight and conforms to the shape of the top and crown of your head. It can be worn up to five weeks before being removed and replaced. It can be cut to your individual style and blow-dried, ironed (curl and flat), dried naturally, braided, tucked behind your ear, or put up into a pony or chignon. The Evolve Volumizer addresses all the needs and wants a woman has for fuller, thicker, denser hair. It produces immediate results and requires no glue, adhesives, or chemicals. It can also be integrated with our new Evolve Extensions+ to add length. Extensions+ are also non-invasive, non-damaging, non-chemical, or adhesive. Because of their revolutionary design, they can be installed in half the time with no glue or removers.

Stacey trains other stylists nationally on the use of this unique hair system and has the distinction of being honored as an Elite Evolve Salon. She’s also a National Evolve Educator and a member of the American Hair Loss Council. “I love working with human hair options for women, which allows us to create a hairstyle that’s virtually undetectable and the most natural,” she said. “Garde Bien also provides a variety of other human hair wig options featuring the finest quality hair in the world, including Follea, whose wigs and hair pieces are the most beautiful I’ve ever touched.” To learn more, call me to discover how my 38 years of experience and today’s hair replacement options can meet your or a loved one’s needs. You’ll experience an all-new and revitalized you – all delivered by our compassionate and caring staff in a discrete and private setting.

The Long Ascent of the S&P 500

Business

The index has overcome obstacle after obstacle through the years NO ONE knows what will

happen tomorrow on Wall Street. Even esteemed analysts can only make educated guesses. As the saying goes, past performance is not indica- Ali Swofford, tive of future results. PhD That said, the market has had many more positive than negative years. The S&P 500 history is worth considering in light of recent market volatility. The S&P is regarded as shorthand for the “market.” The S&P 500 includes 500 companies and represents overall market performance better than the 30-component Dow Jones Industrial Average. Looking at the annual returns of the S&P since 1928, there’s a long ascent with periodic interruptions and historical affirmation of equity investments. The total returns of the S&P (with dividends reinvested) are even more impressive. The S&P advanced in 63 of the 87 years from 1928-2014. Average total return during those 63 profitable years was 21.5%. Average total return during the 24 down years was -13.6%.1 Narrowing the timeframe to reflect investing experience of baby boomers, the S&P advanced in 31 of the 40 years from 1975-2014.2 The S&P’s compound returns are especially encouraging. The compound return across 19282014 is 9.8%, in simplest terms meaning that a $100 investment in shares of S&P 500 firms in that year would have grown to $346,261 in 2014.1 Staying in the market has benefited the U.S. equity investor. The correction we have just witnessed looks momentary indeed in the light cast by these “windows” of time. The lesson? Stay patient and keep the big picture in mind. We cannot predict tomorrow, but we can take comfort (and encouragement) from the history of the market and how well the S&P 500 has performed over time.

“Committed to Putting You First”

NOXVILLE COMPREHENSIVE BREAST CENTER , or KCBC,

was the fulfillment of a dream of Dr. Kamila Kozlowski. “Our goal was to transform the often fragmented and inefficient delivery of women’s breast healthcare and replace it with the most innovative and technologically advanced diagnostic equipment and procedures available, all delivered in a caring and compassionate setting,” said Dr. Kozlowski. In contrast to the multiple visits and specialists most women experience during routine breast cancer screening, KCBC was designed to deliver these same services, all in one day and in a single setting, including consultation, prior to leaving our office.” Since its founding in 1983, becoming the first independent breast center in Tennessee and today one of the very few nationwide, KCBC remains focused on delivering streamlined, cost-effective, quality breast healthcare in the most women-friendly setting available.

While there are a number of unique services that you’ll discover at KCBC, here are a few that truly differentiate their comprehensive breast health center. » All images are read by an on-site KCBC Clinical Breast Radiologist that is dedicated to breast imaging. This means that when you have a breast problem that you are concerned about, you will receive the results of your screening during the same visit. There is no need to wait for images to be sent to off-site radiologists that are often located out of state. » KCBC radiologists are available to consult with you during your visit to answer any questions or concerns that you may have. That means that you no longer need to wait for, or go without, answers to your most important questions. » KCBC is a local, woman-owned small business that is also an independent facility not associated with any hospital. Every patient is treated with the respect and dignity that every individual deserves and experiences a level of

compassionate care that used to be so common in the medical field but isn’t often found in healthcare today. » Not the fragmented and inefficient system of breast healthcare most women have become accustomed to, KCBC offers mammography, breast ultrasound, MRI, fine needle biopsy, surgery, high-risk assessment, treatment planning, and mastectomy prosthesis all in a single location. Lymphatic Cleansing T HE LYMPHATIC system is

an under appreciated part of the circulatory system that is essential for healthy living. Its major functions are to return volume to the blood stream after delivering nutrients to the cells and to sustain the immune system. Without it, your body would quickly become a toxic waste dump unable to function. The organs and tissues that make up the lymphatic system include the spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes, and lymphatic vessels. Lymph is the fluid that circulates through the lymphatic system, and its composition constantly changes as the makeup of the intercellular fluid, from which it derives, is altered. Lymph transports bacteria to the lymph nodes, where they are destroyed. Cancer cells and other toxic substances may also be transported by the lymphatic system to be acted upon by the immune system. The immune system works to keep the body clean by the removal of toxins; therefore, an unhealthy lymphatic system plays a part in every human disease. Disorders of the immune system include Hodgkin’s disease, lymphoma, and tonsillitis. Unlike the blood vessels, the lymphatic system does not have a central pump. Instead, lymph is moved throughout the body via several methods, including muscle contraction and the movement of the lungs and diaphragm during respiration, combined with a network of valves. The spleen acts as a reservoir for

lymph and also filters and cleanses it from bacteria and depleted red blood cells. It acts as a storage organ for minerals and produces antibodies. Lymph nodes are distributed throughout the body and are small organs that deal with immune function and filtering. Various types of bacteria and other toxic excesses are localized in the tonsils, where they are buffered by minerals for discharge or neutralized by additional white blood cells. Without the tonsils, the rest of the immune system has to work harder. Support for the lymphatic system is accomplished in two ways. First, movement of the body causes the lymph to flow more easily. Walking, jogging, swimming, d a n c i n g , gardening, or virtually any type of movement will increase flow in the lymphatic system. Of particular benefit is the up and down movement of a trampoline. The second way is to avoid overloading the lymphatic system with toxins. The over consumption of fats, simple sugars, chemicals, and additives just makes more work for the system. Providing the system with foods rich in alkaline minerals will give it the tools to best perform its function of buffering acids. Root and leafy vegetables, along with sea vegetables, provide the most efficient supply of these minerals. Unless you are experiencing swollen glands or chronic infections, you may not pay much attention to your lymphatic system. But giving it the consideration it needs may have lifelong benefits.

Recipes for Fall BY MICHELLE SAMPLES

Chickpea Miso Soup Prepare chickpeas separately: » 2 cups dried chickpeas » 4 cups water » 2 bay leaves » 3 cloves garlic » 3-inch piece of kombu (optional) » 3 carrots, sliced » 2 tsp sea salt or to taste Soak 2 cups chickpeas overnight in 4 cups water. Drain water in the morning. To pot add beans and cover with water 2 inches above the level of beans. Add garlic, bay leaves, and kombu and bring to boil. Cover and boil for 1 hour. Pressure cooker is best. Once beans are cooked, add carrots and sea salt and simmer for 10 min until soft. Remove bay leaves, toss together, and set aside. These beans can now be used in soup, mashed into croquettes, mashed into spread and eaten in pita pockets, etc.

NOX WELLNESS, a full-service wellness clinic that offers

a wide variety of therapies to address patients’ holistic health, is now operating in West Knoxville under the direction of Dr. Chris Siano. Rather than using a symptom focused approach, Knox Wellness draws from several established disciplines – such as traditional medicine, osteopathic medicine, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, and massage therapy – in order to effectively treat the whole person. “We are the go-to clinic for those who have been the conventional medicine route, yet are looking for a different approach, either because they are still symptomatic or because they want to get to the root cause of their problems,” said Dr. Siano. “Our focus is not only on symptoms and disease, but also prevention and optimal functioning.” The key to the Knox Wellness approach lies in their commitment to patients’ individualized diagnoses and treatments. Unlike traditional practices, Knox Wellness provides consultations that allow the necessary time to collaborate with patients regarding their final treatment decisions, meaning that patient and caregiver truly become a team, working together to develop a diagnostic plan that will best address their specific needs. “Our goal is to provide each individual with a wellness road map to

“Our goal is to provide each individual with a wellness road map to not only help with their symptoms, but to help them achieve optimal health.” Emily Kopek, PA-C not only help with their symptoms, but to help them achieve optimal health,” said Emily Kopek, PA-C. “Too many times in medicine we focus only on the absence of disease and not preventative medicine and wellness.” This “wellness road map” is created in part by a battery of unique, specialty testing – including testing for food sensitivities, stress hormone testing, neurotransmitter testing, and functional gut testing – that give the Knox Wellness team a thorough overview of the patient’s health. Additionally, diet and nutrition receive intense focus, further differentiating the Knox Wellness approach from that of traditional practices. The goal, according to Dr. Siano, is to view the body as an integrated whole in all its physical and spiritual dimensions and treat the “whole person.” Knox Wellness is currently accepting new patients. Clients find the environment comfortable and welcoming, and Spa 9700 caters to its male clients with amenities such as a private men’s nail room and a custom built hydrotherapy shower that men especially enjoy. On the way out, stop in Spa 9700’s retail space filled with carefully selected gifts for you or someone on your gift list. Kelley and Jenn developed the ultimate mini purse, the pursecase, that not only protects your smartphone, but also allows you to take photos and make calls while your phone is still inside the pursecase. There’s also room for a mirror, credit cards, pocket for cash, and a stylish chain that can be converted into a bracelet for those fashion emergencies. The pursecase can accommodate both the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy 4 and is available in a variety of designer colors. Convinced that you need to own this elegantly designed smartphone clutch for yourself? Well, you’ll be able to purchase one at Veronica G Boutique in nearby Turkey Creek.

Meet Local Artist: Claudia Walker

A

S WITH MANY

professional artists, C l a u d i a Wa l k e r always wanted to express herself through her paintings, but life had different ideas. With eight children to raise and a husband in the military, there was little time or money to “be frivolous” and indulge in a hobby. But dreams often overcome obstacles, as Claudia learned f irstha nd. Her daughter’s friend enrolled in a “Ravages of Time” painting class and 24x31 was confiding in Claudia about her new venture, to which Claudia responded, “Oh, I would love to do that!” She invested $37 in the recommended paints, brushes, and canvases (a small fortune for her at the time) and produced her first painting. She had discovered her passion. She read every book, took every class possible, and painted as much as she could with eight children, who left precious little time for her. At the young age of 69, Claudia decided it was time for her to pursue her life’s passion. She transitioned her art from a part-time endeavor and began painting in earnest. Being instinctively drawn to landscapes and nature, her art naturally reflects her surroundings. “Tennessee has proven to be a great inspiration to my artwork,” said Claudia. “The old historic barns and farm equipment left to decay and rust beg to be preserved in painting, and the mountains and fields are alive with movement and color.” Looking at her art you’ll see her love for the outof-doors. Always looking forward to her next adventure, Claudia is currently researching early area moonshine activities for her next series of paintings. Claudia is now teaching painting at Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater and exhibits her paintings actively within the Tennessee region. She has been published in magazines and featured in several solo art shows. She has also been active in the Monroe County art community and was the founder of the “Mayor’s Art Show,” which is an active rotating display of art in the Monroe County Courthouse. You can view Claudia’s work and visit her studio at Gallery on Main’s Open Studio Tour on October 10th. For more information, call 423-337-7400.

Grace Potter

October 15 • 8 pm Tennessee Theatre Grace Potter’s epic musical journey reaches a new milestone with the arrival of her solo debut, Midnight, an inspired work that is surprising, revelatory, and wildly original. Midnight was recorded and mixed at Barefoot Studios in Hollywood with producer Eric Valentine, whose own diverse discography – from Queens of the Stone Age to Nickel Creek – evidences a similarly adventurous spirit and openness to possibility. If Valentine’s studio work has a distinguishing characteristic, it’s his hardhitting sonic signature, which is on display

throughout Midnight’s dozen tracks. The core studio band consisted of Potter and Valentine on most of the instruments, with Burr on drums and percussion. In addition, members of Potter’s longtime band The Nocturnals – guitarists Scott Tournet and Benny Yurco and bassist Michael Libramento – contributed to the sessions, as well as former tour-mates and friends, including singer-songwriter Rayland Baxter, Audra Mae, Noelle Skaggs of Fitz & the Tantrums, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips, and Nick Oliveri of Queens of the Stone Age.

Trends for Fall... A Blast from the Past!

F

Fashion

EELING A BIT nostalgic lately?

Maybe you watched some of the clips from New York Fashion Week and it’s taken you back to the ‘70s... or perhaps you weren’t even around to enjoy the fashions of that era, but you know you’re loving the feel of today’s look! Following the craze of the fashions that emerged this past summer, it is not at all surprising that fall is following suit with the Bohemian and retro looks that were so popular in the ‘70s! There is certainly a sense of nostalgia to be found in today’s strongest looks; whether the fringe look is for you – showing up everywhere on scarves, ponchos, skirts, and dresses – or the very feminine look of lace, you will see lots emerging this fall! And how about the resurgence of that bellbottom pant? It’s been slightly modified into the palazzo of today, giving a slightly dressier touch than the legging or the straight leg pant, which are also extremely popular again! Today’s fashions give you so many great opportunities to let YOUR personality shine through. There certainly isn’t just ONE look that is strong, but so many great choices! You will also see lots of colored fur this

season. Whether it’s in a vest, outerwear, or maybe a slight bit of trim, it’s funky and fun! You’ll want to be sure to add a cape or poncho to complete your new look for fall... maybe with a touch of animal print fur on the edges! To complete your look, add a piece of one-ofa-kind arT by fisher, handmade jewelry and a new fall lip color from kathryn bartow skincare and cosmetics. Deep colored lips and paired with a neutral eye, or just the opposite, are on trend this season. Trends for fall... a blast from the past; with mixed textures in clothes, makeup, and jewelry and lots of fresh, new ideas thrown in! Stop by The Lily Pad, and let us introduce you to fall 2015!

The Lily Pad Ponchos, capes, and blanket wraps are trending in an array of fabrics, colors, and weights... a great addition for your fall wardrobe!

night? Many dogs, like humans, suffer from separation anxiety that often results in undesirable behavior. If your dog follows you from room to room, becomes anxious when a closed door separates you, dislikes spending time alone outdoors, and acts depressed or anxious when you’re getting ready to leave the house, your dog may have separation anxiety. Anxiety occurs when a dog becomes distressed over the absence of other pack members, human or canine. Chewing, barking excessively, salivating, urination, defecation, vomiting, self-mutilation, escaping, and digging are signs of severe separation anxiety. Not an attempt to seek revenge, your goal should be to help your dog accept separation without stressing out and to remain calm during prolonged separation. At Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, our staff is trained to watch for signs of separation anxiety. Various plans are in place to help overcome anxiety. Often, prior to boarding

for an extended period of time, stays begin with a half day leading to full day camp, then a couple overnight stays prior to a week or longer visit prove beneficial. Suites with lower gate openings provide a safe, comfortable “den” atmosphere where the dog can relax. Playing easy listening stations on the surround sound system allows dogs to hear human voices, while chew toys filled with goodies, such as dried pet treats, beef jerky, cheese, or peanut butter, help entertain your dog. Also, matching like/like personalities and size for play time provides many sociable dogs the opportunity to bond. Ms. C’s will be happy to discuss options that will assist in overcoming separation anxiety. Give us a call several weeks prior to making your long-term boarding arrangements.

Homes & Land Magazine Goes Pink HOMES & LAND MAGAZINES nation-

wide will be wearing pink ribbons during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October as local publishers, real estate agents, and the company’s corporate office team up to raise money for charity. The first “Homes & Land Cares” Pink Campaign in 2014 raised approximately $25,000 for national and local organizations supporting breast cancer awareness, research, and patient services. The total includes $10,000 donated to the American Cancer Society by the Homes & Land corporate office. The remainder was raised by the publishers of 85 local magazines and their advertisers in locations ranging from Malibu, CA, to the Outer Banks, NC, from Vermont to New Smyrna Beach, FL, and multiple points in between.

This year the corporate office has again pledged to contribute money to the American Cancer Society for each magazine page displaying a pink ribbon in October, up to a total of $10,000. “The initial ‘Homes & Land Cares’ Pink Campaign was a great success in uniting our publishers and advertisers for a good cause,” said Allen Harrod, President of Homes & Land. “This year we’re committed to repeating and exceeding that achievement.” About Homes & Land Media Homes & Land is a leading integrated real estate media franchise founded in 1983 by Russ and Cheryl Haskins. Family owned and operated, the Haskins family serves real estate agents across East and Middle Tennessee from their Farragut office at 12805 Kingston Pike. 27,000 New Reasons

to Rediscover the All-New Consign To Design

A

S WE MOVE closer to Consign

To Design’s fifth anniversary celebration, we have even more to celebrate with all of you as we prepare to move into our all-new 27,000 square foot supercenter located at 9329 Kingston Pike near The Home Depot. Scheduled to open October 1st (please visit us on Facebook for any changes), you’re in for a huge surprise. Our new space is, well, gigantic. And the response from customers who have been offered a sneak preview of our new space has been incredible. All new on the inside, the all-new Consign To Design features a palatial showroom nearly four times larger than our previous showroom. Our all-new consignment intake area will speed the flow of consigned items into the store and onto the showroom floor. Customers who have enjoyed the tasteful vignettes that we created at our former location will really enjoy the increased number of vignettes we have planned for you in our new “super-sized” showroom.

Student winners from Pellissippi State Community College: Meghan Copeland, Ashley Elcan, Fiona Holland, Kathy Kervin, and Tammy Montgomery Also new to Consign To Design is our outreach program with Pellissippi State Community College’s school of Interior Design Technology.

Both students and their instructors will work with our own team to design vignettes throughout our showroom using a combination of furniture, home décor, and art items. We recently held our first student design competition at our new location, which was won by the team of interior design students Meghan Copeland, Ashley Elcan, Fiona Holland, Kathy Kervin, and Tammy Montgomery. A photo of their winning vignette is featured in this article. This exquisitely designed vignette is just a small sample of what you can expect at the allnew Consign To Design. And, lest I forget, we wish to thank all of you for your past support and encouragement, as we owe our success to each of you.

Heritage Festival Offers Family Fun 18th Year for Ames Plantation Event

O

N SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10, more than 150 folk artists

and musicians will recreate rural Tennessee from years gone by at the 18th annual Heritage Festival. Come to the Ames Plantation in Grand Junction to explore the history, culture, art, and traditions of the area. Gates open at 9 am CDT, and visitors should plan to arrive early to see it all. Many of the activities take place at Ames’ Heritage Village, a replica of a 19th century rural settlement. The village contains several homes, a one-room schoolhouse, and the nationally renowned Stencil House. Named for the elaborate designs covering the walls, the Stencil House is believed to be the most extensive surviving display of stenciling in the South. While at the Heritage Village, you can see blacksmithing, weaving, broom making, and woodworking demonstrations. Visit the booths of skilled artisans who make toys, jewelry, baskets, candles, pottery, and other crafts all by hand. These handmade goods are of the highest quality and make unique gifts for family or friends. 40

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE October 2015

Those interested in historical farming practices can explore a large collection of antique tractors and steam engines, see horses being shoed, and learn about dark fired tobacco production. Civil War enthusiasts can tour a reproduction of a Civil War camp, view artillery demonstrations, or chat with re-enactors in period dress. There’s something for music lovers, too – some of the region’s top bluegrass, gospel, and string bands will entertain on two outdoor stages throughout the day. Younger visitors will enjoy handpicking and ginning cotton, hand milking a goat, or creating their own unique stencil designs. Other hands-on activities include participating in an archeological dig on an actual 19th century historic site. The Heritage Festival begins at 9 am and ends at 5 pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for children ages 4-16, and free for ages 3 and under. Parking is free. Enter Ames Plantation at Buford Ellington Road off Tennessee Highway 18. No pets please. Jamboree guests can shop for handmade crafts, see a blacksmith in action, and watch as freshly ground corn meal is prepared in an old-fashioned grist mill. Are Annoying Insects Enjoying Your Outdoor Living Spaces More Than You?

I

F YOUR HOME isn’t equipped with

retractable screens, the answer is likely yes. Why? Because flying and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But here’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often prevent homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote your outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to extend the time that they, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, some of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

October in the Garden THIS IS THE TIME of

year when I’m grateful to live in a part of the country that has four seasons. Spring will probably always be my favorite, but fall is a close second. I love fall colors, fall clothes, and fall food. I love walking the dogs when it’s cool enough to wear a hoodie but not cold enough to wear a coat. I love going to the farm and seeing the mountain behind the house glowing with red maples. Yep, definitely a close second! October is also one of the best gardening months, so I have plenty to talk about. » Because I know you’ll be asking, our average first frost is between October 15th and 27th. This means that annuals such as impatiens and begonias need to be pulled up before then, because they turn to mush. Geraniums and petunias can usually handle a light frost just fine. Pansies can still be planted now and will last all winter and through spring. Don’t forget containers! Consider putting mums, cabbage, kale, mustard, or grasses in with pansies for

interesting colors and textures. » Fall is a great time for new beginnings. If you had work done to your house during the summer and need new landscaping, this is a great time. If you want to freshen up overgrown landscapes, this is a great time. If you’re sick to death of your ugly yard, this is a great time to create a new one! » Have you walked around your yard yet to check on things? I know some of you have, because it has been the month of baggies! Every day someone is coming in with a baggie of leaves or sticks or critters or poop. (We have gotten very skilled at identifying poop.) That is good! (The baggies, not the poop.) That means you’re checking! I would so much rather you come in with a baggie than come in and tell me you planted a shrub six months ago, and when you looked out today, it was dead. » If your yard has issues, October is generally the best month for planting (or re-planting, as the case may be) trees,

shrubs, and perennials. Our soil temperature stays warm, and we usually get rain during the winter, so the plants have several months to get their roots established before it starts getting hot. » Is your yard boring now that your deciduous plants are dropping their leaves and summer annuals are done? Add plants with fall and winter appeal! Some trees, shrubs, and perennials are at their best this time of year. Burning bush and nandina turn fiery red, beautyberry and winterberry hollies put on clusters of berries, and fall annuals and perennials are showing off their blooms. » Having children messes up your brain. Even though my children are college age and beyond, I’m doomed to never hearing the word “cleanup” without having Barney the dinosaur singing in my head. My head is a crowded place sometimes. Anyway, you need to do a good cleanup of your yard. Cleanup includes the dreaded fallen leaf piles. If you don’t have many trees, this is easy: they can be shredded and used as mulch or compost. If you have a yard full like I do, it’s a big deal. If we didn’t rake, we would have leaves two feet deep. When that happens, you have to get them up, or they will kill everything under them. » Since I mentioned compost, this is a terrific time to add it to your flower beds. If you spread it now, it has all winter to break down and add nutrients to your soil. When spring gets here, all those nutrients will be ready to make your plants grow. » Let’s talk about water. I will point out that last October we had no rain. None. Don’t put your hose up yet. » Don’t prune. » Do mulch. Mulch will help preserve moisture and stabilize ground temperatures during the winter. Don’t bury your plants! Three inches is enough. » Pull any weeds and apply a pre-emergent to keep them from popping back up during the winter. » Fill up your birdfeeders with good birdseed. Don’t use the crappy kind or you won’t have pretty birds, and you will have ugly weeds. Don’t forget the birdbaths, either! Keep them full and clean. Glass and ceramic baths should be brought in before a freeze, but metal and plastic baths can stay out all year. We have several terrific workshops and events coming up, so stop by and see what’s new!

OLD CAN BE found nearly

anywhere in or around your home. It thrives in damp, warm, humid spaces, including kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and crawl spaces – to name a few – and even more locations that often go undetected for years. Medical professionals agree that mold, which is a fungus that reproduces spores, can result in t he devel op ment o f many breathing related problems, from mild to severe. Also, there’s Jeremy & Ashley Akers evidence linking exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, including coughing and wheezing, in otherwise healthy people. Some researchers also believe that the early exposure to mold may be linked to the development of asthma in some children. Spores produced from mold produce chemical mycotoxins that can result in allergic reactions in some people that can lead to infections, hypersensitivity disorders, breathing problems, organ damage, mental impairment, or even death in the rarest cases. The solution, while appearing simple, is to avoid exposure to mold. But because mold can be found virtually everywhere, that solution may be difficult to achieve. Reducing exposure to mold prone areas is helpful. Also, avoid carpeting in damp areas of the home, including bathrooms. But if symptoms such as a sore throat, runny, itchy, or stuffy nose, wheezing, and coughing persist, you may actually have a mold spore source within your home that has gone undetected and that is best left to the professional mold remediation specialists. Be aware, however, that not all mold remediation solutions will necessarily make the breathing easier. Unregulated in the state of Tennessee, many mold remediation companies lack the necessary expertise required and often make unsubstantiated claims and problems. When selecting a mold remediation company, insist that they be ACAC accredited. The American Council for Accredited Certification is your assurance that the mold remediation company you select meets recommended industry guidelines, offering you the peace of mind that you deserve.

breeze is a familiar sight along highways and country roads in many parts of Tennessee this time of year. Most are familiar with this plant as an important agronomic crop. What may be less familiar is the soybean as a fresh vegetable crop grown by specialty producers and home gardeners because of their high nutritional content and convenience. Called “vegetable soybeans” or the Japanese term “edamame,” these soybeans are the same species (Glycine max) as field soybeans. Vegetable soybean cultivars, though, have a larger seed and are generally sweeter and more digestible. Although this crop was reported in the U.S. in the 1850s, variety collecting and testing increased in the early to mid 1900s. Current varieties now represent Asian introductions, as well as U.S. lines or crosses between the two. Soybeans are sensitive to day length, so varieties are most productive when they are grown in specific latitude ranges. ‘Midori Giant’ is a cultivar that has performed well in Tennessee, but there are also many other possibilities. Most seed suppliers will be able to provide suggestions for your region. Growing edamame is quite similar to other warm-season bean crops. After serious threat of frost has passed, seeds are planted in a full sun location in well-drained soil approximately one inch deep and two to three inches apart in rows spaced 15 to 30 inches apart. Germination and early growth are best when soil temperatures warm to around 65°F. If soybeans have not been previously grown on your site, inoculate with rhizobium, a bacterium to support nitrogen fixation. While edamame can

be relatively tolerant of low moisture, proper watering during pod filling will increase yield. Edamame are harvested while the seeds are immature, meaning they have not started to dry down and accumulate starches that reduce their tenderness and sweetness. Harvest when the seeds are full size and pods are bright green. There is a small plot of edamame in the UT Gardens, Knoxville, that are just reaching harvest stage much to the delight of the gardeners and the resident squirrels. The easiest way to shell edamame is to boil them first. There are a range of cooking options, although the most common way to eat edamame may be to boil for five minutes, salt lightly, and pop them directly from the pod into your mouth. You can also freeze them after boiling and then dip in boiling water for a minute or two to reheat. So the next time you are ready for a novel and nutritious crop for your home garden, try a few edamame and support the little agronomist in every gardener. Natalie Bumgarner is an Assistant Professor of Residential and Consumer Horticulture and the Tennessee Extension Master Gardener Coordinator. The University of Tennessee Gardens located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public except during designated special events. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu. Photo by N. Bumgarner, courtesy UTIA

Slip and Fall Accidents The Leading Cause on General Liability Insurance Claims

S

INCE I was a child, I have always

enjoyed roller skating. But, a few years ago, fun at the rink landed me in the emergency room. My daughter had challenged me to a race to the water fountain, and without a second thought, I took off with her by my side. What I didn’t realize until it was too late was that the floor changed from carpet to tile as I neared the fountain. I crossed the threshold and ended up flat on my back with a broken arm. Recently our family visited a local food chain in West Knoxville. It was drizzling outside, and as we walked inside, I had a scary slip and almost found myself in the same predicament I had back at that roller rink. The floor was so slick that it required deliberate, careful steps to prevent falling. I was puzzled, because the floor looked clean. Then I noticed several cones warning patrons of the danger of the slippery, wet floor. How can this be?

Over time, tile, concrete, and natural stone floors pick up impurities from the environment. Most restaurants clean their floors every single day. Many even hire outside crews in hopes that the “professionals” can do a better job than employees. And yet slip and fall accidents are the greatest source of general liability claims within the industry and the leading causes of death. Why? The problem lies within the method of cleaning. A mop and squeegee can only clean the surface area of the floor. The real problem lies beneath the surface. The longer it has been since a “deep” cleaning, the more hazardous it becomes. Your own kitchen faces the same challenges but on a smaller scale. Add a couple of food spills, and the kitchen floor can quickly become the most dangerous place in your home. You may mop your floor a hundred times, but tiny particles of dirt, oil, and grime build up

countertops

tile & grout

within your floor, making it dangerous to everyone that walks on it. CO-OWNER The only way to John improve the safety Fitzwilliam of your floor is to remove ALL foreign debris. That’s where we can help. Surface Doc’s patented technology is now considered the best method for cleaning hard surfaces. Without this method, one can only penetrate the topmost layer of your floor. But, with our purified water, 3,000 psi, and 15 pounds of suction, dirt is literally blasted out and taken away immediately. Surface Doc will make your floors sparkle again and make them safer, too.

Garage Renovation: Starting from the Floor Up

Durable. Beautiful. Guaranteed!

MOST OF US

grew up with a totally utilitarian garage with a coated floor – coated with oil and dirt. But today’s garages have become an extension of a home’s living space, and that means creating a clean space with flooring that’s durable and easy to clean. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, or peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, the nation’s leader in garage enhancements and remodeling, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. “There have been many improvements in coating technology during the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” explains Brain Falls, Flooring Division Manager for PremierGarage. “Polyurea is a hard coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last.” The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind each floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. Curing two times harder than epoxy, the flooring provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Any cleanup requires only a hose or mop. Available in hundreds of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. The garage will be as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of the home. Premier Garage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Having a PremierGarage floor installed will also: » Increase the resale value of your home. » Improve safety with a floor that is slip, impact, and heat resistant and brightens the area with increased light reflectivity.

Oriental Rugs:

Why They Should Come With a Warning

WHY DO ORIENTAL RUGS,

which are known for their longevity and durability, require special handling when cleaning? These hand-crafted pieces of art continue to be manufactured by hand in much of the same way they have been for more centuries. When properly cared for, these heirlooms, which are crafted using durable, all-natural fibers including wool and cot- BEFORE ton, will generally appreciate in value over time and can be shared with future generations to enjoy. But these same natural and organic materials, including dyes, make these otherwise AFTER durable and long lasting treasures potentially prone to permanent and usually irreversible damage. While searching for ways to clean their rugs, Oriental rug owners often turn to the Internet for advice. While some suggestions are indeed valid, others can lead to disastrous results. Some rug owners have actually been encouraged to use the same cleaning process used to clean their wall-towall carpeting. Others have been encouraged to wash their rugs on the family driveway. Just imagine the damage that will result when moving a wet Oriental rug over an abrasive concrete surface. The only way to properly clean an Oriental rug is to wash it in a special, climate controlled facility with specially treated water that is pH balanced and to use soaps that are specifically designed to clean and protect these priceless rugs. With nearly 30 years of rug washing and carpet cleaning experience, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning has created a one-of-a-kind, highly specialized, climate controlled facility that uses our proprietary processes to safely and correctly wash your family’s Oriental rugs. From ionized water and pH control to special submersion baths and drying chambers, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning is East Tennessee’s first choice for Oriental rug washing. We even have a special process for the removal of pet urine, which can often be successfully removed. With the holiday season quickly approaching, it’s time to wash your fine Oriental rugs and your home’s wall to wall carpeting and upholstery before your guests arrive. So why not call us today? Trust the name that has earned a reputation for quality: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning.

Dave Barnes

October 22 • 8 pm • Bijou Theatre When Dave Barnes first showed up on the music scene 12 years ago, he was the guy hitting the college circuit with limitless energy and an equally unrestrained expectation for the future. There were songs to be penned, tours to be booked, and a whole world of experiences to be seized. Since then, the singer-songwriter has written and released seven albums, played hundreds of cities each year, received Grammy and CMA nominations for Blake Shelton’s cut of his song “God Gave Me You,” become a father, and formed deeper relationships in the industry than his 23-year-old self could have dared hope. Turning 35 this year, Barnes is in a season of both nostalgia and reality about what it means to be a traveling musician, and those reflections have become the life and breath of his eighth full-length release, Golden Days. “It kind of tells a story of beginning something, where you are now and, as the season changes, the things you look back on,” he says.

Why Choose Shae Design Studio? 1. Our foundation in design Working as a design coordinator with several construction companies in Knoxville, Shae Seeber noticed a gap in the design process. “I was helping construction companies, developers, and builders make beautiful homes and had to watch them put the cheapest MDF cabinets throughout the home to meet budget,” she said. Shae decided to start the Shae Design Studio. With low overhead, she’s able to give those same builders, homebuyers, and remodelers the opportunity to put beautifully crafted solid wood cabinets in their homes at wholesale prices. “Ultimately, I wanted to give the family living in the home cabinets that would not only stand the test of time, but look beautiful and function well,” said Shae. With a background in interior design and construction, she holds the tools needed to create evocative spaces that come alive with spirit and character and also functionality and utility. 2. not about selling the box, but it’s about creating the best design catered to each individual homeowner. Big box stores want to sell you their predesigned kitchens fast. Mold is also an allergy and asthma trigger! Dirt basements or crawl spaces are ideal locations for moisture that can cause mold to grow, releasing airborne mold spores and dust mites that can migrate into your living space as indoor air pollutants and allergens. Dampness also causes wood to rot, making it a desirable target for termites and the structural damage they can cause.

Oak Ridge International Friendship Bell T HE OAK RIDGE International

Friendship Bell has become an iconic symbol of Oak Ridge and is known throughout the East Tennessee region. It is a source of much pride by many – the citizens of Oak Ridge, the surrounding communities, and visitors who come to see the bell. The opportunity presented by the failure of the first pavilion after 20 years of faithfully housing the bell allows for a new expression of the bell and its place in Oak Ridge and our region. The large 8,000 pound bell was selected by the Committee of 50 as a fitting symbol of Oak Ridge’s 50th anniversary. It commemorates significant dates from World War II and also contains emblems from Japan (for example, cherry blossoms and cranes) and Tennessee (for example, iris flowers and dogwoods). The International Friendship Bell has fulfilled the dreams of those who supported it originally. It has become one of the most recognizable symbols of peace and friendship between former enemies. The new design being considered enhances the bell through spaciousness, open design, and a greatly enlarged plaza. A community gathering place is envisioned with enough openness to allow even large groups to gather at the bell. Community input has been used to determine the most desirous design, and the one with a cantilever has become the selected design as the project moves ahead. The timing for this new, spacious, and open design could not be better. With the advent of the new Manhattan Project National Historical Park, the bell will add a significant and thought provoking element to the Heritage Tourism destination that Oak Ridge undoubtedly will become. Visits to the bell are already one of the key elements that distinguish Oak Ridge. The deep reverberations of the sound the bell produces is particularly intriguing to children. It is easy to ring, so all can enjoy the bell’s melodious ring. However, the new park is but one of the many things coming together for Oak Ridge right now. We have Main Street Oak Ridge and the associated and unprecedented retail interest in the new construction of what was for years now a mostly vacant enclosed mall. The Explore Oak Ridge mobile media application with strong Rotary support is becoming the finding method for Oak Ridge visitors. For information, visit www.exploreoakridge.toursphere.com/en/index.html. A new website for the Oak Ridge Convention and Visitor Bureau, www.exploreoakridge. com, is a huge hit with Oak Ridgers and visitors alike. It went viral on social media even before it was officially launched. Our economic ties with Japan are strong. 58

Tennessee has the second largest number of Japanese companies in the nation, with only California having more. Did you know that we have 180 Japanese companies with 40,000 employees? Most of us do not realize that! Interest in the bell by the Japanese Consulate in Nashville is encouraging. Our sister city, Naki, Ibaraki, Japan, has already committed to donate $10,000 in support of the new International Friendship Bell Peace Pavilion! The renovation of the Oak Ridge International Friendship Bell serves as a significant contribution to the ongoing revitalization of our city and fits nicely into the range of efforts we see all around us. The timing of the schedule for completion of the project in the fall of 2016 will coincide with several other major projects scheduled for that same time. Our businesses and their leaders are expressing interest in supporting the project, but additionally we need individuals and families to contribute personally to the rebuilding. This project is for all of Oak Ridge and even the East Tennessee region to appreciate and enjoy.

Area contractors and private businesses will be giving to the project as gifts to the region. Our Japanese friends will help us, too, but the citizens of the city itself must be an exemplary part of the contributions to ensure the project is completed. The Oak Ridge City Council realizes this project is an investment in which the city must have a big part. They are taking the lead on the initial effort and have removed the failed pavilion and are committed to support the construction of the new, more openly designed pavilion. Major fundraising efforts are currently scheduled to begin soon after the first of the year. While the project to expand the pavilion and turn the bell into a community gathering place is just getting started, the vision is becoming a shared vision of the community. As was the case in 1996 when the first pavilion was put in place, the second pavilion, a Peace Pavilion, is soon to be a reality!

Ladies – It’s Your Turn

A

LMOST 200 years

ago Thomas Jefferson wrote, “Knowledge is power, knowledge is safety, and knowledge is happiness.” And how true that is – especially when it relates to women and their finances. The days of women being Yvonne Marsh, CPA in the dark about their own finances is ending. Today more and more women are empowering themselves with financial education and independence. The truth is, if you aren’t already managing your own finances, statistics tell us that one day you will. Being prepared for life’s unpredictability surely brings peace of mind. And if you have daughters, whether grown or pre-teen as my daughter is, there is no more important role model we can provide than to be strong, financially savvy women. So, where to begin? Believe it or not, I don’t think it starts with compiling your balance sheet, drawing up a budget, and studying the latest mutual fund returns. I think it begins with your values. What about money is important to you? I don’t mean material possessions – I mean what does money provide you? Security, freedom, family, creativity, adventure, growth, confidence, fun, philanthropy, experiences, etc. By taking a few minutes to identify the top three to five values, it will give you purpose and motivation on your financial journey. At Marsh Professional Group, we use some helpful questionnaires to assist you in narrowing in on your core values. Once I understand a client’s core values, we work together to create a financial roadmap that moves you from where you are today to where you want to be in the future – using education along the way to make certain that your financial objectives are both clear and achievable. For example, if a client values security, we make sure her plan provides for sufficient lifetime income. If she values adventure and growth, we make sure her plan provides for discretionary adventure money. Or if she values a family legacy, perhaps her plan would include life insurance or estate planning tax work. Every plan is unique and different, just as we are! Joe Bonamassa B

ONA-WHO? That’s what I – and

Joe Bonamassa fans around the world – often hear in reply when we ask if they have ever heard of the blues guitarist. You may be saying the same thing to yourself right now. For those of you who are unaware of JB’s story, here are a few facts about him: » He has played blues guitar since he was five years old. » He has performed in nightclubs since he was nine. » He opened for the late B.B. King in 1989 at the tender age of 12. » At the age of 13, he was featured on “Real Life with Jane Pauley.” (You can find it on YouTube.) » To date, he has released 18 solo albums in the last 13 years. » He has played with many of the blues and rock greats and has earned their respect. » He has performed in many of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Beacon Theater, The Royal Albert Hall, and the Vienna Opera House. Knoxville is going to have the opportunity to become familiar with Bonamassa when he hits the stage at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum on November 14th. If you love the blues and love it live, you will not want to miss this concert. It’s guaranteed to blow you away. Bonamassa called me from the road to talk about what fans can expect at the Knoxville show. “The show in November will be promoting more like some of the stuff off of the new

album, some of the stuff from this tour, some of the stuff from the Muddy Wolf CD, some of the back catalog,” he said. “It’s going to be more of a soup to nuts gig. “Anton Fig (formerly of the Paul Schaffer band on Letterman) is playing drums. Michael Roden on bass. Reese Wynanas’s on keyboards. Lee Thornburg and Paulie Cerra are in the horn section. Depending on the material we choose, there may be a couple of other players. We haven’t really put together the lineup yet, but it’s going to be close to that.” Bonamassa is doing a lot to promote music education in the schools – especially the blues – with his “Keeping The Blues Alive” foundation. I asked him why he thinks it’s so important to promote the blues as he does. “At the end of the day, how else are the kids going to be hip to what’s going on?” he said. “I used to do blues in the schools all the time. It was something that, for me, was part of my day. I mean, now that my days are pretty hectic, I can’t do it anymore. It’s really important to keep the music going for another generation. Continuing to champion it one thousand percent. You know, sometimes it feels like a thankless kind of job, but it really does pay dividends if you can take the time.” Another talent who Bonamassa has been associated with – in fact, he introduced her to his fan base, elevating her popularity to a whole new level – is the lovely and talented Beth Hart. Having an interview with her in the near future, I asked him what he thought about her.

“I think Beth Hart is probably the most naturally talented singer and musician that I’ve ever been on stage with,” he said. “She has such a wonderful sense of timing and phasing, vocally, and has an infinite capability, vocally. She commands attention. “There’s some people who can really sing. They stand up there and sing. She stomps up there, and she takes control of the stage. You can’t teach that kind of stage power and that presence. She’s a very, very, very special individual, and I’m very proud of the records that I’ve made with her.” We hope and trust that Bonamassa will be delighting blues fans for many more years. I asked him to look way on down the road to when he has gone to the great gig in the sky – how he would like to be remembered and what he hopes his legacy will be. “To be honest with you, there are a lot of people that I see fight to try to get their faces chiseled into the great Mount Rushmore in the sky as far as rock and roll is concerned,” he said. “As long as I have a positive impact on music and inspire a few kids to play the guitar, I’m good. You always play your last gig like it could be your last. One day you’re going to be correct.” His last three sentences to me summed up his passion. “I didn’t get into this to get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” he said. “I didn’t get into this to make the part – to make the team. To me, I just like to play the guitar.” You can read the extended version of this interview on www.boomerocity.com.

success isn’t just about her own career – it’s about inspiring others as well. The postdoctoral research associate at the ORNL Postdoctoral Research Associates Program has been named one of the top researchers in her field by Hispanic Engineer and Information Technology magazine, specifically profiled in the magazine’s “Latinas at Tech Giants” edition. “One of the reasons I pursued a career in applied environmental microbiology is to work on research problems that can contribute to the development of new technologies and/or have a societal impact,” said Andrea, a microbiologist with interdisciplinary training in biological and engineering sciences. “Areas of interest include bioenergy, water quality, and bioremediation.” Andrea earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, her master’s degree in oceanography from Old Dominion University, and her Ph.D. in engineering science from the University of

South Florida. “I love discovery and enjoy the day-to-day interaction with scientists at UTK and ORNL,” she said. “Most of the challenges I face involve field sampling. When we’re outdoors and collecting microbial samplings, we have to work around weather and other obstacles, such as wells drying out.” Andrea joined the ORNL research team in May 2012. The program advances scientific and technical training for doctorate-level scientists and engineers in disciplines of critical national need, like neutron science, high performance computing, and biological systems. On any given day, Andrea can be found collecting geochemical and microbial samples from groundwater wells located at the Oak Ridge Field Research Site, working in the laboratory to extract DNA from microbes, participating in conference calls and meeting with colleagues, or in her office analyzing data

worldwide iconic figure, even outside of the entertainment industry. With sales of singles, albums, hits collections, and digital downloads topping 100 million, and having composed more than 3,000 songs herself, Dolly’s notoriety understandably centers on her role as a country music legend. But her superstar status reaches far beyond the music world, including her worldwide war on illiteracy and her efforts to help improve the lives of Sevier County residents – Dolly’s birthplace and hometown until she was 18 years old. I learned far more about Dolly from my wife, Judy, who recently read her most recent book, “Dream More.” In the book, she expands upon her popular commencement speech she delivered at the University of Tennessee and the drive and motivation that allowed her to overcome numerous obstacles during her more than 50 year career.

Reflecting on the successes – and yes, failures – of iconic mentors like Dolly Parton offers hope to all of us that experience seemingly overwhelming odds in many areas of our lives, not only business. I think that Dolly’s experiences can be very enlightening to small business owners who are often confronted with their own obstacles as they strive to build successful businesses. While few of us were subjected to the abject poverty experienced by Dolly and her family of 14, who were forced to live in a one-room cabin, many of us, nonetheless, are confronted with economic, financial, health,

and any variety of challenges that can derail our dreams. In her book, Dolly describes a variety of challenges that threatened to overcome her dreams, but in the end, the power of the dream overcame the obstacles. Reflecting on the successes – and yes, failures – of iconic mentors like Dolly Parton offers hope to all of us that experience seemingly overwhelming odds in many areas of our lives, not only business. When knocked down by life, we would be well served to view ourselves as Dolly views herself – a dreamer who makes the decision to stand up, dust off her rhinestones, and continues on in her journey to her dream.

Why Competition Will Always Be King WHILE I’M NOT a competitive runner, jogging is an integral part of my exercise regimen. When short on time, it’s simply more convenient to take a quick run than to drive to the gym. When finished, it’s always a relief to check it off my list. Workout today? Check. Done! On to other things. For me, exercise is a matter of discipline due to a need to take care of myself physically, not something that I’m driven to do for other reasons. There are times, however, when my competitive nature goes into overdrive. Not like “sign up for a marathon” competitive. Nor do I set goals for faster speeds or increasing distance. But when other runners pass by, it temporarily challenges me to kick it up a notch. My slouching posture becomes erect. My pace gets stepped up, and I go briefly faster. I even work up a smile and offer a friendly hello. Why? Good old-fashioned competition. And thank God for it. Competition is an excellent motivator. It makes me aware of how I’m doing when it comes to personal achievement. Since we cannot manage what we cannot measure, it is

important to know and accept where we are, especially when it comes to personal goals. Without competition, there would not be superstar athletes, award-winning singers, or companies with numbers that exceed that of their competitors. Nor would we have the Olympics, a Super Bowl, or a World Series. Competitive environments cause others to push towards greatness, to win, and strive to improve on a daily basis. However, competition can hurt as much as it can help. Learning what others can do or have done may set a standard, but our drive towards achievement must be underpinned by personal commitment. We can’t achieve much if we simply try to “one up” others. That is temporary and fleeting. If my only reason to try to be a better runner is that another runner jogs by, then I don’t really want to be a better runner. Why we do what we do is always worth evaluating. T h e wo r l d i s c ra z y c o m p e t i t i ve . Comparisons are everywhere due to social media. We could spend all of our time comparing ourselves to others, but that will never

achieve anything when it comes to our personal fulfillment. Pick your game. Where do you want to exceed? Prioritize, then eliminate. Then eliminate some more. Professional athletes generally play one sport. Why? Because most can’t be great at two. So they pick one and set out to become the best. We can’t do it all. That’s good news and quite a relief! Our driving force should be defined, refined, and based on purpose, passion, and personal fulfillment. By allowing our potential to stand before us each day, we give ourselves the freedom to compete in a way that matters and makes a lasting difference. Competition? It will always be king. Just remember it can work for or against you. Use it wisely. Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. We would set out shortly before dark and wander with siblings or friends all around the neighborhood and beyond, knocking on doors and getting our pillowcases or plastic pumpkin heads filled with goodies. From pixie sticks, to jaw breakers, to chocolate bars, it was a candy feast for weeks afterwards and great fun. Times have changed since then. Most costumes are store bought and promote Hollywood characters now instead of individual creativity and imagination. In addition, parents are uneasy about letting their children trick-or-treat door-to-door without accompanying them. It just isn’t safe. In fact, many parents opt to forego that tradition altogether and take their youngsters to churches and malls instead. Halloween has changed. It is becoming more of an “adult” holiday these days, and it isn’t as fun for children as it was decades ago. From adult costume parties and movies that would scare even Freddy Kruger to haunted

houses that would put even the bravest souls into cardiac arrest, you truly have to work to keep Halloween kid-friendly, traditional, and fun. While many of the traditions and the excitement of the Halloweens we experienced are forever gone, there are some Halloween traditions that you can still pass down to your children. » Carve pumpkins with your children. It is great fun to make a night out of making a pumpkin family. It’s a great photo opportunity to capture the faces of children as they scoop out the insides of a pumpkin and/or meticulously carve their pumpkins into faces. Even little ones can participate by drawing faces on their pumpkins while adults or older siblings do the carving. (Save the pumpkin seeds to roast later.) » Have a hair raising movie night with your children. There are great movies from yesteryear that will do the trick like Ghost Busters, The Wizard of Oz, The Addams Family, Edward Scissorhands, Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and more. Pick and choose ones that are age appropriate and make a movie night. » Avoid the adult-focused haunted

houses and go to kid-friendly ghoulish places. There are many age appropriate and kid-friendly places, such as the Knoxville Zoo and Ijams Nature Center, which keep the tradition of Halloween alive for youngsters without all the gore and terror. » Take your children to fall festivals where they can experience traditional Halloween fun such as bobbing for apples, mirror houses, caramel apples, hayrides, and other fall-type activities. While we can’t bring back the good old days of Halloween, with a little thought and planning, you can make your family’s Halloween exciting and fun. Stick to as many traditional things as you can, and make new traditions for you and yours as you go along. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Customer Service for Every Company

T

ODAY IT is very common for people

to have bad or frustrating experiences interacting with companies. Why has the phrase “customer service” become somewhat of an oxymoron in the past decade? What has happened? When did the motto of companies change from “The customer is always right” to “The customer is an annoyance?” Yes, there are many amazing companies today that give excellent customer service, but it seems like this is becoming more of a rare occasion, because now when it happens, we are so happily surprised. Let’s discuss a few points that every company should ensure that their staff exhibits: » Companies must do a better job training their staff in the polite and professional way to handle the telephone. Customers

immediately make a judgment regarding a company’s reputation depending on their telephone manners. » When any customer walks into a place of business, whether it is a doctor’s office, a store, a bank, etc., the first thing they should hear is “hello” and “welcome,” regardless of how busy that business is. » If a business ever has to place a customer on hold, whether in person or on the telephone, that company should update the customer regularly on the status of the wait. » If a representative of a company commits to a customer that they will do something, then it is essential that they keep their word, whether it’s returning a phone call, emailing a quote, gathering further information, etc. Integrity is everything. » Finally, let’s get back to the golden rule.

If we would just remember to treat others the way we would want our mothers, our daughters, our sons, etc. to be treated, then that’s how we should treat them. Looking at each other as people, instead of “customers,” might help us remember what’s really important. May we become a more gentle and kind community.

Approximately 40% of people in the U.S. between the ages of 26-40 have at least one tattoo. However, the incidence of tattoo regret has also increased. A recent poll suggests that about 20% of individuals regret getting a tattoo. Fortunately, for those who rue their tattoo, the practice of tattoo removal has just recently taken a gigantic revolutionary step. Before lasers were used, people desiring to have their tattoos removed suffered through various procedures such as acid treatments, dermabrasion, salabrasion, and non-selective laser ablation. These procedures frequently resulted in significant scarring and left open the opportunity for serious infection. Surgical excision and subsequent skin grafting, while effective, also caused disfigurement. For decades, Charlatans have been hawking tattoo removal creams. At best, these creams are ineffective. At worst, they are expensive and can cause noticeable scarring. In the 1990s, physicians began employing Q-switched lasers to treat unwanted tattoos. While fairly effective, these lasers generally require at least 12 treatments and often as many as 18 or more. Q-switched lasers remained the gold standard for tattoo removal until the release of the PicoSure laser in 2013. With its picosecond pulse duration, the PicoSure laser literally shatters tattoo ink into microscopic dust-like particles that can then be eliminated by the body. The result is that it takes less than half the treatments of Q-switched lasers to remove a tattoo. In a published scientific study, 100% of patients obtained greater than 75% clearance after two to four treatments with the PicoSure laser. I had been evaluating the PicoSure laser prior to its FDA clearance. While this laser can treat all tattoo colors, what held me back from adopting this exciting technology was its inconsistent results with red ink. This concern has been specifically addressed by the addition of a 532 nm wavelength, which is designed to more effectively treat red, orange, and yellow tattoo ink colors. Even with the new gold standard PicoSure laser, tattoo removal remains a tricky business. As a board certified dermatologist at Southeastern Dermatology Consultants, I will be on-site to directly oversee your treatment and ensure the best possible outcome in the fewest number of sessions.
