From the Publisher

AS I look back on 2014, I ask myself

where the year has gone. Seems that I was just taking out my Christmas decorations last year, and here I am faced with my holiday decorating this year. Time really does go quickly, and it makes me realize how I need to enjoy the journey more and not focus on what is left undone. This past month, Tom and I had a great opportunity to reconnect with some friends that we had not seen in 10+ years. They were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary and were traveling across Tennessee, stopping in our area. That was our chance to get together and visit for a while. Even though we had not talked to each other for years, our visit was as if we picked up since the last time we did talk. Taking that time was the highlight of our week and made me realize how important

Decorating Den Interiors’ owner, Sandy Kozar, and associate, Taryn Stait, offer professional design assistance in a unique, approachable, cost-effective manner.

it is to have good, caring, lasting friends like this couple in our life. This holiday season, as we are busy with our everyday lives, take time to slow down and visit with family and friends; maybe even reconnect with some old acquaintances and appreciate those true lasting friendships. In doing that, you may find that it will be the highlight of your week or year. We at Everything Knoxville have come to appreciate all of our readers and advertisers, many of which have become great friends. We wish all of you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. We look forward to continuing to serve our community by highlighting all the best Knoxville has to offer while making new friends along the way. Enjoy the holiday season!

Often misunderstood by prospective clients, many people mistakenly view the hiring of an interior designer as a daunting, even intimidating task that must be far too expensive for the average homeowner. In this issue, Sandy and Taryn explain their uncommon and refreshing perspectives that will definitely help you enhance your understanding of interior design and how they strive to work within your design budget. E K : S a n d y, a l t h o u g h m a n y prospective clients might be too embarrassed to ask you this, can everyone afford an interior designer? Sandy: Selecting the right design professional and getting them involved

Knoxville Interior Designer and Owner of Decorating Den Interiors, Sandy Kozar, and her associate and fellow Interior Designer, Taryn Stait. Many of our readers will be familiar with Sandy ’s award-winning designs as seen on HGTV, Knoxville’s Parade of Homes, Knoxville Symphony House and also being featured in a variety of national and international publications. early in your decorating process is crucial to the success of your project. In reality, an interior designer can save you money because homeowners often make costly mistakes before contacting us. They also can pay more for furnishings, window treatments, art, rugs, accessories that end up not working well or do not fit properly. We work within your design budget and our design work is completely scalable. The design project can be implemented room by room as your time and design budget allow. Best of all, we do not charge by the hour for our design services when product is purchased! We can do this due to our long-standing agreement with hand-selected,

top-quality manufacturers and suppliers. EK:How can I be assured that your designs will be a reflection of my unique lifestyle and taste and not those of the designer? Sandy:: The end result of what we deliver is consistently a reflection of your own individual taste and style. We ensure that the look of your home is as unique as you are. All designs are artfully and carefully created to your needs. It is never an ‘off the shelf ’ solution presented to everyone. We consider the function of a room before beginning the design process and bring you designs in a 3-D format. The style always shines through with your lifestyle. It allows your home to sparkle and express to family and friends that you made the effort to make it beautiful and comfortable. We simply help you to differentiate yourselves from the everyday home designs. EK:What should I expect during my complimentary consultation? Taryn: We spend time getting to know you and your project—and you getting to know us. We offer a complimentary consultation as an exclusive, “Refresh and Renew Review” of your home to show you how best to showcase your home within a variety of design budgets. EK:What happens after the initial consultation? Ta r y n : I f y o u d e c i d e a f t e r t h e complimentary consultation that you would like to work with us, our design appointment will be scheduled. At the design appointment, we bring back designs that highlight everything that we discussed on the first appointment. Orders are placed, followed and gathered so that installation can be done in one day! That is our favorite day! We send you to another part of the house, or you can go run errands or whatever, and then you are brought back in for “the big reveal!” EK:What can you offer to your existing clients? Sandy:After the work is completed we follow up to ensure your satisfaction. We

“Contacting Sandy to complete the decorating of our condo was the best choice we could have made! She spent a lot of time with us, finding our style preference and then providing beautiful designs of window treatments, furniture, area rugs, bedding, lighting, artwork, and numerous accessories to choose from. Through her confident, yet reassuring manner, she stretched our comfort zone by suggesting styles and fabrics that we would not have chosen on our own. We are very thankful she did! We are SO pleased with the results and cannot believe how beautiful our home is. Every time we walk into our condo, it is like walking into a real live HGTV home makeover. Sandy is truly an artist who excels at her craft. She also has a very talented, professional, and meticulous team who assists her with designing, painting, furniture delivery, and installations. We highly recommend her for your decorating job, no matter the size.” – Cheryl and John Marshall hope to have you as a “client for life” by offering our new Free Annual Style Review to ensure that you are happy and satisfied with your new look or want to add to the project or start a new one. EK:You are also a Decorating Den Interiors franchise owner. Why should that be important to me? Sandy:Decorating Den Interiors has been in business for 45 years as a well-known and respected international company that adheres to the highest standards of quality, design, and integrity. We can provide the resources, industry best pricing and exclusive designer lines that you can’t get anywhere else. Locally owned and delivered, yet we have access to the very national and international products you require to give your home an individual look!

EK:Do you find that most clients have a vision of what they would like but just don’t know how or where to start? Sandy:In most cases, this is absolutely true. 50% of the potential clients that contact us have never worked with a designer before. That’s why our individual approach to interior design is so important. We invest a great deal of time in learning about each and every client. We’re the facilitators. It is only after we discover each client’s unique tastes, lifestyle, color preferences, textures, design budget, and much more, that we present them with several design options that feature 3-D space plans, lighting, fabrics, colors, finishes, art, and rugs that are on budget. We transform the apprehension that many clients have to interior design into an adventure where we’ve developed many ongoing friendships with our clients. EK:How can a prospective client who may be considering using the services of an interior designer learn more about you? Taryn: It is very simple, just contact us in our Studio at 865-982-6368 or visit our website at www.SandyKozar.DecoratingDen. com. We make the whole process easy for you. The hardest part is overcoming any fears you may have of working with a designer. You will be glad you did and thrilled with the results! EK:In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Sandy:I encourage anyone wanting a more beautiful home with a warm, comfortable living environment to take advantage of the complimentary “Refresh Review and Renew” consultation. It is the easiest first step you can take to make your home more enjoyable for you and your entire family. We’d love to help you make your house a beautiful place to come home to!

r e c e nt l y, h om e o w ner s w i s h i n g to upgrade their home’s existing wood cabinets and f looring had few options, and all of them expensive. Cabinets could be replaced or resurfaced with the addition of new cabinet doors. Wood f loors, again, could be replaced or refinished. CARLEEN HEAD But now, thanks to a revolutionary and proprietary system introduced by N-Hance Wood Renewal, homeowners now have a third and much more cost-effective alternative that restores your existing wood surfaces. N-Hance Wood Renewal is an innovative, affordable wood cabinet and floor renewal service that renews wood surfaces without the dust, inconvenience, and noxious fumes associated with traditional methods. N-Hance uses gentle products and services to clean, repair, and renew wood floors, cabinets, trims, and furniture to a beautiful, near-new glow, saving customers time and money over the traditional refinishing, re-facing, or replacing alternatives. Cabinet refinishing is typically one-third to one-fifth of the cost of re-facing or replacing cabinets. Additionally, N-Hance uses a proprietary technology called Lightspeed® Instant-Cure Wood Refinishing, which instantly dries and cures refinished wood surfaces. Not only is it great for commercial settings where businesses can’t afford to close, but it also assists homeowners who are seeking a quick return on investment when preparing their home for sale. One advantage that really sets us apart from our competitors is that we can, in some cases, begin a wood renewal process when the customer goes to work in the morning and have it completed by the time they get home. Homeowners are always amazed at the quality of the results accomplished in such a short amount of time. In addition to the cost, time, and convenience perks of N-Hance’s services, there is also a “green” aspect. To learn more, and to discover just how costeffective it is to N-Hance your home’s wood cabinets and floors without the dust, mess, or odor, I invite you to call me today.

Out of Sight...Out of Mind? IF YOU THINK what you can’t see won’t

hurt you, you’d be wrong if you were talking about your home’s roof. One unique characteristic of roofing is that a properly installed roof may appear the same as an improperly installed roof to the average homeowner, but it’s what you can’t see that’ll hurt you. When I started my career as a contractor more than a decade ago, I routinely observed new roofs being installed and older roofs being replaced. As you might expect, the quality of installation varied significantly. Once completed, it wasn’t always easy to tell the “good” from the “bad” jobs, because what determines whether the job has been done correctly remains largely undetected below the surface. I launched All Dry Roofing with the objective of providing area homeowners with a level of quality workmanship uncommon in my industry, backed up with a written guarantee. Here’s why we’re different. ›› Each homeowner is provided with copies of our workers compensation and general liability insurance policies. This protects you from possible loss should a workplace accident occur. ›› Every roof is installed in full compliance with the roofing manufacturer’s

specifications. This ensures that your roofing manufacturer’s warranty is not voided when improperly installed. ›› Every roof is installed in full compliance with local and state building codes. We use 30 year 3-Dimensional Shingles or greater instead of the 25 year 3-Tab Shingles, and we secure each shingle with five fasteners, not the four required by manufacturers and building codes. This results in 50% or greater holding power. ›› Each valley is protected with a special ice and water barrier to provide added leak protection to these vulnerable spots at no additional charge. This is often ignored by many roofing contractors. ›› We use synthetic felt instead of conventional roofing felt at no additional cost. Financial Considerations for 2015

Now is an ideal time to schedule a meeting with a financial professional.

HOW DO economists see next year unfolding?

Morningstar sees 2.0-2.5% GDP for the U.S. for 2015, Ali with housing, export growth, Swofford, PhD wage growth, very low interest rates, and continuing vitality of energy-dependent industries as key support factors. It sees the jobless rate in a 5.45.7% range and annualized inflation between 1.8-2.0%. The Wall Street Journal projects our GDP at 2.8% for 2015 and slightly higher inflation for 2015 than Morningstar, with the jobless rate at 5.5% by December 2015.1,2,3 Projection for interest rates. In the Journal’s forecast, the federal funds rate will hit 1.17% by December 2015. A National Association for Business Economics forecast projects it at 0.845% as next year concludes. That contrasts with Fed officials, who see it in the range of 1.25-1.50% at the end of 2015. The consensus projection for the 10-year Treasury yield is 3.24% by end of 2015. They also see home prices rising 3.3% for 2015 and NYMEX crude at $93.67 a barrel by the end of next year.3,4 Harvest portfolio losses before 2015. By dumping the losers in your portfolio, you can claim losses equaling any capital gains recognized in a tax year, and you can claim up to $3,000 in additional losses beyond that, which can offset dividend, interest, and wage income. Excess losses can be carried over into future years.5 Look at tax efficiency in your portfolio. You may want to put income-producing investments inside an IRA, for example, and direct investments with lesser tax implications into brokerage accounts. Finally, do you need to change your withholding status? If major change has come to your personal or financial life, it might be time. If you have married or divorced, if a family member has passed away, if you are self-employed now or have landed a much higher-salaried job, or if you either pay a lot of tax or get unusually large IRS or state refunds, review your current withholding with your tax preparer.

The Importance of

Sleep

“T

HE CHILDREN

were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar plums danced in their heads.” That phrase will no doubt be recited scores of times this month, and children might find it difficult to sleep on Christmas Eve. Yet millions of American adults will experience sleep disturbances on a nightly basis and will often resort to medications to assist them. Chronic sleep deprivation may have profound ramifications leading to complications including accidents, loss of mental acuity, circulatory disorders, decreased libido, and emotional turmoil. It is also thought to have a considerable effect on the nation’s productivity and economy. Sleep is not just a time to rest. Important functions happen during sleep such as the consolidation of memory for things recently learned. But perhaps the most important function during sleep is the removal of toxins. Lactic acid, a waste product of muscle activity, as well as toxins ingested and inhaled throughout the day, are ushered out of the body during

sleep as alkaline minerals used for processes during awake functions become available to buffer the toxins in their journey out of the body. The more sound our sleep is, the more efficient the removal of toxins becomes. The more efficient the removal of toxins becomes, the healthier we are. Most of us are aware that we can promote sound sleep by getting adequate exercise and reducing the amount of stress in our life. One of the most important ways to promote sound sleep, however, is by being mindful of what we eat and when we eat it. Eating whole grains that contain tryptophan helps to raise the level of serotonin, which promotes restful sleep. Avoiding foods three hours before retiring is also just as important for sound sleep. This is especially true of foods such as caffeine, sugar, spicy foods, high fat foods, and alcohol. Eating complex carbohydrates has a positive impact on sleep, which can ultimately promote health and wellbeing. Including whole grains at the evening meal can help promote a more restful sleep and perhaps eliminate “sugar plums dancing in our heads.”

Recipes for a Long Winter’s Nap BY MICHELLE SAMPLES

Nori Roll Ups 1 cup brown rice 1 1/2 cup water Pinch sea salt Wash rice and place in pan. Add water and salt, and bring to boil. Cover and simmer for 50 minutes. Set aside to cool.

SIDE DISHES Purple Cabbage with Sauerkraut 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 cup chopped red cabbage 1 cup sauerkraut 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seed oil To pan add oil, cabbage, and onion. Sauté for 3 min. Add kraut with 1/2 cup kraut juice. Cover and simmer for 15 min. Toss together and cool.

Carrot Burdock Dish 2 carrots, sliced thin into matchsticks 1 cup burdock, sliced into matchsticks 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seed oil 2 Tbsp umeboshi vinegar (available in health food section of stores) 1/2 cup water Heat oil in skillet and add burdock. Sauté for 3 min. Add carrots on top of burdock. Do not stir. Add water. Cover and simmer 20 min. Let all water evaporate. Add umeboshi vinegar and toss. Before making nori rolls, slice up one avocado and 1/4 cup thinly sliced red onion and set aside. Begin making rolls by placing a thin layer of rice on the sheet of nori first. Next add a small amount of red cabbage with kraut followed by carrots and burdock. Top with slivered red onion and avocado slices. Be careful not to add too much as the nori will break when rolling up. Start rolling the nori (begin with the long side) and continue to roll until complete. Using a sushi mat can help in this process. Squeeze the mat around the roll and let sit for 5 min. Cut into bite size pieces and serve.

The Way Medicine Used to Be

M

any of us remember a time when we had a relationship with our healthcare provider, before all of the changes in the healthcare marketplace, leaving most of the decisions impacting our healthcare to insurance companies or bureaucrats. Today a growing number of physicians are actually incentivized to see more patients, resulting in doctor/patient appointments of only 10 to 15 minutes. Fortunately, there are healthcare providers who, recognizing the growing dissatisfaction by many patients with the inadequacies of today’s healthcare environment, are offering patients options – options that allow them to experience medicine the way it used to be. Dr. Timothy E. Bell, D.O., is one such area physician that offers his patients compassionate, caring, and personal preventive medicine. EK: First of all, congratulations on being voted “Best Physician in Roane County” by the readers of Roane County News where, in addition to Knoxville, you also practice medicine. Dr. Bell: Thank you! I was certainly honored by the news. It means a lot to receive this kind of recognition for something that is an everyday part of how I practice medicine. EK: I know that providing personal preventive healthcare is the cornerstone of your practice. Is that why you have elected to remain in private practice, and how do your patients benefit? Dr. Bell:As you stated earlier, the healthcare marketplace is quickly changing. It’s becoming increasingly more difficult for a physician to survive in this environment. To put it simply, as insurance providers continue to cut reimbursements to physicians, it creates the need to see more and more patients on a daily basis just to be able to operate their practice. Thus, patients are moved in and out of the office quickly, and the patient care suffers greatly with little or no time to really address important patient issues. By remaining a solo practice, I’m able to maintain a certain quality of care that I wouldn’t be permitted to if we were a part of a large group or major healthcare company. In our practice at Essential Health Access, we focus mainly on preventive health, which allows the patient to potentially avoid many health issues and live healthier, happier, productive lives as they age and at the same

time only paying for their specific healthcare needs. In other words, healthcare today is set up in such a way that you pay a premium for a service whether you use it or not. Our practice benefits the patient by avoiding possible health issues, as well as saving them money. EK: Tell our readers how your practice is unique, and describe the advantages of having access to a private practice physician. Dr. Bell:Well, as an Osteopathic Physician, I believe that if you treat all aspects of a person’s health – that is mind, body and spirit – the body will inherently heal itself. Our new practice is centered on access to your personal physician. By this I mean that our patients would be able to pick up the phone and call for help at any time. You would have the option of having a scheduled appointment via a HIPPA compliant, highdefinition video conference, or perhaps it would simply be a visit on the phone. You may prefer to stop by our Farragut office or have us come to your home or place of business. In any event, we want to be accessible and convenient for our members. EK: Even though you charge for your services, patients may actually pay less for their total healthcare. Give us an example. Dr. Bell:Because everything we do is menu based, you pay only for what you ask for. We offer a monthly access fee, which is NOT an insurance policy. In fact, we don’t except any insurances, which allows us to keep our cost down and deal directly with our patients. Your access fee or membership fee simply gives you, the patient, access to schedule a visit by whichever means suits you best. For example, a regular visit in the office or by phone is a small fee. Our nighttime and weekend calls have an additional fee. Even after adding up these costs, one would still pay less than if you had to visit a walk-in clinic or emergency room for a person who doesn’t have any insurance. If you do carry a health insurance policy, the amount of money you may be paying in monthly premiums, especially those with lower deductibles, could far exceed what you have need of. But perhaps we can look at it in a different way… how much more would we save if we would only be more proactive in our efforts in learning how to eat right, exercise effectively, breathe clean air, and get a better restorative night’s sleep? EK: How can our readers learn more

Health

Timothy E. Bell, D.O. about Essential Health Access? Dr. Bell:First of all, they can keep reading your magazine! We would be happy to send an informational packet to anyone who emails us at essentialhealthaccess@gmail. com. You can also visit us online at www.ehealthaccess.com. EK: Anything else you would like to add? Dr. Bell:I’m committed to practicing high-quality, evidence-based medicine that is personal, preventive, and accessible. I don’t think having insurance should be required to access this kind of healthcare. I don’t believe we have to settle for the diminishing quality of our healthcare system at the hands of our bureaucrats and insurance companies. I think a personal relationship with our doctors is what promotes good health practices.

Ramsey House Christmas Dinners A LIMITED number of tickets are now on

sale for a very exclusive evening at the Historic Ramsey House. Travel back in time to 1797 to experience a traditional family Christmas dinner. Only five seatings of 10 guests each are available. What makes this event so special is that guests will be served in the Ramsey House dining room on fine China, bringing the house museum to life with an authentic holiday feast. The house will be decorated for the holidays with natural greens, fruits, vegetables, and nuts and lit by candlelight. The walkway to the home will be lined with candles in mason jars, and a costumed docent will give a special guided tour of the entire house. Complete with wine and dessert, the twohour tour and dinner will start at 7:30 pm in the Visitor Center with a viewing of the award-winning film that gives the background and history of the home, family, and early Knoxville. These dinners, catered by Bradford Catering, will be offered on Sunday, December 7,

through Thursday, December 11. The cost is $125 per person or $1,250 for a private event for a complete table of 10 people. This is only the second year of this offering of a holiday dinner with friends, business associates, or with people that will become new friends. Reservations must be made in advance, and with limited seats, tickets sell out quickly. To reserve your place, call 865-546-0745. Payment will be required to reserve a seat. The proceeds from this very special event go directly to Historic Ramsey House to enable us to continue our mission to preserve, educate, and interpret the home of Francis Alexander Ramsey and the Ramsey Family. For more information, visit www. RamseyHouse.org. About Ramsey House Ramsey House was built in 1797 by Knoxville’s first builder, Thomas Hope, for Francis Alexander Ramsey. The home is constructed of Tennessee pink marble and blue limestone. It was known at that time as the finest home in Tennessee. The structure

is significant for its original interior and exterior architectural features and its period decorative art collection. The Ramsey Family was one of the first families to settle the Knoxville area. They played vital roles in developing civic, educational, and cultural institutions. Colonel Francis A. Ramsey was one of the founding trustees of Blount College, now the University of Tennessee. One of his sons, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey, authored an early history of the state, The Annals of Tennessee. Another son, William B.A. Ramsey, was the first popularly elected mayor of Knoxville and the Secretary of State for Tennessee. The historic house was bought in 1952 by the A.P.T.A., along with one acre of land. Today the site consists of 101.5 acres; a historic house restored and furnished to the period of Francis A. Ramsey’s occupancy (1797-1820) and a Visitor Center located in a beautiful country setting. Historic Ramsey House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. THE

BLACK LILLIES December 31 • 9 PM Tennessee Theatre

“THE BLACK LILLIES are fronted by the bestmatched male-female vocal duo since Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris,” says the Wall Street Journal. It sounds like an overstatement – unless you’ve heard The Black Lillies. Then it sounds like a reasonable claim. The Black Lillies are a band for the ages, not the slick, soulless music that seems to get most of the radio airplay, but rich, rootsy tunes performed with as much heart as technical virtuosity. This commitment to authenticity has earned them accolades from Rolling Stone Magazine, who calls them one of “the most buzzworthy new acts in country and Americana.” They’ve enthralled audiences at festivals ranging from Bonnaroo and CMA Fan Fair to Stagecoach, conquered

the Billboard Top 200 country charts, won two Independent Music Awards, and played the Grand Ole Opry more than any other independent band. Their latest album, Runaway Freeway Blues, is a beautiful ode to restless spirits and rambling hearts, rooted in the mud-rutted switchbacks of Appalachia. It is the sound of a band that’s becoming something of a phenomenon across the country. The music is breakneck, brazen, and beautiful; gentle Laurel Canyon folk, the honkytonk heartache of classic country, winding jams, and flat-out rock ’n’ roll, but full of the spirit of the open road, heading down the highway and not about to stop anytime soon. Now they return home to Knoxville to celebrate the end of one amazing year and ring in 2015. You won’t want to miss it!

Looking for Holiday Gifts They’ll Still Love Next Year? Go Traditional, Not Tech

P

OPULAR WISDOM would

have you believe that the best holiday gift must have a battery, a touch screen, and wireless capability. Technology gifts, however, rarely stand the test of time. Give your loved one a smartphone or tablet in December and it may already be obsolete by spring. What’s more, market research firm MarketTools found 14% of us return consumer electronic gifts after the holidays. There’s a reason why certain types of gifts and accessories become thought of as “traditional.” Their appeal and usefulness endure long after the holiday season ends. They speak to the recipient’s heart. They may create a warm sense of nostalgia and comfort by reminding the gift-receiver of a simpler time in their lives. Need another reason to go traditional, rather than tech? Consider this: A Stanford University study of gift-givers and recipients found that the price of a gift had no influence on the recipient’s level of appreciation. How much the gift cost actually meant more to the giver than it did the receiver. For far less than you might spend on the latest technology gift, you could give a wide range of no-tech, traditional, and nostalgic gifts. » Delightful holiday decorations – Giving holiday decorations is a great way to make the season even more festive for everyone on your gift list – and give something that will be used for years to come. Personalized ornaments or ones that celebrate a hobby, occupation, or favorite sports team gently remind recipients that you know – and love – who they are. Unique holiday décor items such as items made from all-natural materials, a beautiful wreath for the front door, or hand-crafted lanterns with a winter theme make memorable, affordable, and useful gifts. » Home décor – Many people agonize over how to personalize a gift, yet if you’ve ever visited someone’s home, you probably already have an idea of their home decorating style. Look for home décor pieces that mesh with items already in their home. For example, if your sister-in-law has decorated her home in a rustic style, she might welcome some rooster tableware or a beautifully crafted quilt. » Bed and bath – Everyone sleeps and

everyone bathes, but does everyone on your holiday list already do both in style? Gift items that make for a more luxurious bathing experience – or even just put a touch of lux into everyday hand washing – can deliver a sense of caring, comfort, and relaxation. In the bedroom, accent pillows and quilts can remind the recipient of your care all year long. » Timeless toys – Shopping for kids can be a challenge, especially if the child on your list has everything from a tablet to a batterypowered scooter. While last year’s tech toy may already be collecting dust on the shelf or broken beyond repair, traditional toys like old-fashioned musical instruments and simple dolls are timeless. This year why not give a classic doll like Raggedy Ann or Andy or a stuffed Sock Monkey? Or try games that are as challenging now as they were decades ago, such as Simon, or those that travel well like mini Foosball or air hockey.

» Food favorites – Food can be a deeply personal gift, especially if you opt for something that not only tickles the recipients’ taste buds but his or her sense of nostalgia as well. Childhood favorites like Necco Wafers, salt water taffy, peppermints, or traditional root beer are flavorful reminders of a simpler time. Pantry staples such as gourmet pancake mix and syrup or premium vanilla extracts feed the recipients’ body, as well as their sense of creativity. Or save someone a step on her holiday meal prep by providing dessert; a homemade pie or other baked goodies will be a welcome addition to any host’s holiday table. Some gifts will fade in favor just as winter fades into spring. Everyone wants to give a gift that will be loved, used, and remembered – and nothing accomplishes that better than a gift that appeals to our sense of nostalgia and tradition. Holiday Gift Giving at the Art Market Gallery

J

UST IN time for holiday gift giving, the

Art Market Gallery offers a stunning array of choices. For December, this affordable artists’ cooperative offers 10% off a single purchase when you bring in this page or the accompanying ad. Here’s a sample of what we have: Wearable, one-of-a-kind art, such as felted handbags, woven tunics, and painted silk scarves, are fashioned by our fiber artists. Jewelry comes in everything from copper to sterling silver, with surprises in-between, each unique piece coaxed, hammered, or woven into shape, many with semiprecious stones or hand-wrought polymer beads. Functional pieces are hand-crafted out of wood, as are color-enhanced, stand-alone show pieces, contemporary accent furniture, hand-turned pens, and pipes. Glass artists have harnessed the light, soldering a rainbow of works, from candle-holders to art meant to shine at the window. There’s even glass fused with clay. Artists see no bounds in creativity. Pottery and ceramics run from modern to traditional design, some glazed with a nod to antiquity or with painterly images, others inscribed with patterns or distinctive decorative edging. Whimsical glazed or painted mixed-media sculptures modeled from clay or, remarkably, papier-mâché are fascinating gallery additions. Finally, there’s our wide assortment of original wall art: oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, and mixed-media paintings; graphite and pen-and-ink works; hand-pulled prints; and fine photographs. They’re in all sizes and at price points that fit your wallet. December sales of selected works benefit Community School of the Arts. In addition, colored pencil and watercolor painter, Marjorie Horne, and wood turner, Nelson Ziegler, are this month’s featured artists, so check out their exhibit when you visit us. Consider coming during downtown Knoxville’s First Friday Art Walk starting at 5:30 pm on December 5, and enjoy live Christmas music. Owned and run by 62 professional artists, Art Market Gallery is wheelchair accessible and near Mast General Store. Hours are 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm Friday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. We’re also open 11 to 6 Mondays in December! Parking in public garages and on the street is free on weekends and after 6 pm weekdays.

and thousands of dollars raised, the “Homes & Land Cares” campaign in support of the national fight against breast cancer wrapped up November 14 with a final $10,000 corporate donation to the American Cancer Society. On behalf of the company and its franchisees throughout the U.S., Homes & Land President, Allen Harrod, presented a super-size pink check to representatives from the American Cancer Society. The $10,000 corporate contribution was only part of the organization’s efforts to support the cause. “Homes & Land Cares” put printed pink ribbons on the covers and inside pages of more than one million Homes & Land magazines during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. This show of support was made possible by local publishers nationwide, who teamed up with local advertisers to raise awareness and money.

While the corporate contribution went to the American Cancer Society, money raised by local Homes & Land publishers and advertisers went to a variety of organizations involved in raising awareness of breast cancer, helping patients with the disease and supporting cancer detection and research. Eighty-five Homes & Land magazines actively participated in the campaign, and several publishers reported raising more than $1,000 in their local communities. Final numbers have not been tallied, but the total amount donated by franchisees and the Home Office is expected to be near $25,000. Farmhouse Touches That Bring Homeyness to a Kitchen SHAKER CABINETRY, country store-

inspired hardware, barn elements, or a key piece of art will add homestead appeal to your kitchen. The overdone ruffles and plethora of hens in 1980s-style “kountry kitchens” may be out, but farmhouse details in the kitchen will always be in style. Even in the most contemporary kitchens, tiny details derived from the farmhouse ideal add charm and personality. These elements, derived from real farmhouse kitchens, barns, and country stores, conjure a relaxed feeling from a simpler time. Adding a dash of farmhouse style with any of these touches will give your kitchen a warm, happy, country feeling. Shaker style The simplicity style of cabinetry is the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Shaker style in the kitchen. The fronts are simply framed, and the clean lines could work with just about any style Freestanding furniture Historic farmhouse kitchens didn’t have the unified cabinets and counters we see today; they were more likely to have a collection of freestanding pieces. Freestanding cabinets breakup the bland continuity that can take over a kitchen, and they can provide a key display space for collectibles. Tongue and groove Tongue and groove adds a traditional element to any kitchen. Accessorizing with mason jars brings to mind good old-fashioned canning and jam making. Minor details You can mix sleek industrial elements, like the stainless steel vent hood and pendant lights, with farm-style accessories. Baskets, antique crocks, and corbels on the open shelving recall our American farmer roots. Barn doors Sliding barn-door panels on overhead tracks have taken the design world by storm. Use reclaimed wood to warm up a kitchen with a barn-like patina. Tractor seat stools Stools that look as though they could have been pulled off a tractor add unique charm to island type seating. A farmhouse sink This is probably the most obvious farmhouse

touch. The sink’s apron front stands out among the cabinets and lends a collected look to a transitional kitchen. A milk glass collection in the window also adds a traditional touch. A rustic farm table A knotty wood table, overhead beams, and traditional candle chandelier add farmhouse charm to any transitional kitchen. Bin pull hardware Drawer handles bring to mind an oldfashioned country store. Though the overall style of the room is uncluttered and contemporary, other details, like the butcher block, canisters, and barn pendant light, can

give it an intimate farmhouse feeling. To discover how Luxe Homes & Design can help you to incorporate unique designs around your lifestyle into your new home, or to learn more about the Luxe Homes experience, you’re invited to call Jenny today.

Santa’s Suggestion for Enjoying Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces Next Spring

I

F YOUR home isn’t equipped with retract-

A breath of fresh air for your home Screens of East Tennessee 865.919.1615 steve@tennesseescreens.com

able screens, will you be able to fully enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces next spring? The answer is likely no. Why? Because flying and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But here’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, flying and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote our outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to extend the time that they, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, some of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help merge the screens with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to the general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. So if you’re uncertain what to buy your family for Christmas this year, how about retractable screens from Screens of East Tennessee and a season of memorable out-of-door experiences with family and friends next year? For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

Reduce the Stress of Holiday Guests WHETHER BFFs or relatives you see only

once a year, you want your guests to feel welcome, comfortable, and happy to be in your home. When they are visiting, you want to enjoy the time with them, not be constantly fussing and rearranging. If you’re having overnight holiday guests, make a schedule of tasks to be done in advance so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. A little organization can go a long way in reducing stress! » Replace burned out lights and de-clutter the entryway. » Unpack the holiday dishes and wash them so they’re ready for use. » Decorate early and pack away the storage boxes. » De-clutter closets and storage areas. Clearing space before the holidays makes organizing in the New Year easier. » Create space in the closet or dresser for your house guests. » Before holiday meal staples go on sale, make room in your pantry by checking for expired food. Then stock your pantry with items you’ll need from the plan-ahead menus. » Ask guests in advance about any food allergies. » Plan and prepare sleeping arrangements ahead of time. For example, an air mattress for the cousins, grandparents into the kids’ rooms, or install a Murphy bed in a spare room. » Have enough fresh bed linens and towels to accommodate everyone. » Provide some extras that say “we’re happy you’re here.” Put flowers in a vase, have books or magazines for reading, and set out a water carafe. » Bathe your pets and clean their sleeping areas or crates. » Make sure the garage is not a hazard to life and limb. This looks like a lot, but by tackling these chores one at a time, it won’t be overwhelming. You might want to assign certain tasks to the kids so they can earn extra money for their own gift giving needs. If your home needs more organizational help, consider getting a custom-designed closet, garage organizational storage system, home office makeover, or pantry renovation by contacting Tailored Living at 865-974-8686, or visit www.TailoredLiving.com/knoxville.

Is Your Home Ready for the Holidays? Spending time with loved ones is my favorite part of the Christmas holidays. Almost everything I accomplish from the beginning of December right up to Christmas morning is about creating lasting memories for my kids. Some family traditions include reading the Christmas Story, baking cookies with the kids, attending pageants, and cooking a feast (with my mom and sister-inlaw) for Christmas Day. IF YOU ARE ANYTHING like me,

topping your list this season is getting your home ready for company. Decorating for the holidays can be fun, but for many of us, we need to concentrate on sprucing it up a bit first. Decorating on a clean foundation is much more rewarding than covering up problems. You may want to deep clean all your hard

tile & grout

surfaces. This includes countertops, tile and grout in the kitchen and bathrooms, and possibly sidewalks and outdoor living areas. If carpets haven’t been cleaned in a while, you may need a restoration cleaning instead of the traditional surface steam cleaning. A truly deep down clean home inspires positive interaction and just makes you feel good. Add some beautiful holiday décor, and it’s sure to be a place that fosters harmony and joy. If you need any help getting your home’s ambience to a quality you can be

proud of, we’d love to help. We at Surface Doc would like to wish you and your family a Christmas season filled with hope and joy from our Savior Jesus Christ. We’d like to take this moment to thank our customers for accepting us into CO-OWNER your homes and, in John some cases, sharing Fitzwilliam your lives with us. Please help us spread the beauty of Christmas by recognizing the real reason for the season. Let’s all count our blessings, and live each moment to the fullest. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from your friends at Surface Doc.

IT’S HAPPENED to your neighbors, and now

it’s happened to you. You’ve discovered mold inside your home. Mold inside your home is not only a potential health hazard, but it can also damage your home and its contents. The important thing to do is to act quickly, but that starts with selecting a qualified mold remediation company. Unless you are knowledgeable, choosing a mold remediation company can be very challenging, and choosing the wrong mold remediation company can result in an even bigger problem than the one you’ve just discovered. Here’s a simple checklist to help you select a qualified mold remediation company: » Is the company you’re considering ACAC certified? Request that they provide a certificate. » Does the company you’re considering engage in business activities other than mold remediation? » Does the company you’re considering offer references without being asked? » Does the company you’re considering have liability for the safe handling and removal of mold? If you can’t answer yes to all four of these questions, then it is highly recommended that you find a different mold remediation company. Because of the potential for health and structural problems related to untreated or improperly treated mold in your home or workplace, you deserve the peace of mind that comes from selecting a fully qualified mold remediation company. As Knoxville’s only ACAC certified residential mold remediation company, be assured that we are here to help you should the need arise.

December in the Garden

I

T’S THE most wonderful

time of the year! Or not. Some people really love the holidays, decorating, gift giving (and receiving), and all the family time. Some people would rather have an un-medicated root canal. No matter what your view of the season is, there are still things that can be done outside on those wonderful sunny days that we occasionally get. » You can still plant trees and shrubs! Trees would really rather be planted now, and most shrubs prefer fall planting. Because I am above all an honest person, I’ll tell you that I wouldn’t plant marginal shrubs at this point in the year. By marginal, I mean the things that were killed by the winter last year: gardenias, Carissa hollies, grasses, and loropetalums. Some weather predictions call for another severe winter, and those would probably not survive it if they were newly planted. » No matter what the winter does, you can still plant pansies! They are my favorite flowers because I don’t like winter, and

their little smiling faces give me something to smile about in the cold. If you don’t want to plant them in your flower beds, at least put a few in a pot on your porch to cheer you up when skies are grey. » Clean out annual and perennial beds if you haven’t already. You also need to get up leaves that have fallen from deciduous shrubs that had insect and disease problems. Bugs and fungal spores can overwinter on plant debris and will crank back up as soon as the weather starts to warm up. » Whether you blow, rake, or vacuum, heavy layers of leaves will need to be removed from beds and lawns to prevent suffocation. Light layers can be run over by the lawn mower and left to decompose. » Container gardens need attention before we have freezing weather. Plastic, terra cotta, and cheap ceramics won’t survive freezing temps for long and should be stored in a protected area. If the soil has been in them for more than three years, dump it into your planting beds and replace

Plant them with hardy plants, or fill them with greenery. » Don’t forget our feathered friends, especially if the winter is harsh. Keep feeders clean and full, and keep baths rinsed. Metal and plastic baths can stay outside, but ceramic and clay will need to be drained and stored to prevent cracking. There are heated baths available, or you can buy a heater for the birdbath you have. The birds will be deeply grateful. If you love the holidays and love to decorate, keep reading. If you don’t, you can stop now, because I’m going to talk about holiday decorations from your yard. » Your yard can be a wonderful source for holiday decorations. Magnolias, hollies, hemlocks, boxwoods, pines, and other plants are great for fresh greenery. Cut branches and immediately place in water. Woody stems should be crushed on the ends to let in more water. They will last longer if you soak them overnight. I put mine in the bathtub. » If you have hydrangeas, and if they bloomed this year, you can cut off the old blooms and dry them or spray paint them. I was given a beautiful basket of blooms that had been painted gold one year, and I enjoyed it tremendously. » Don’t forget the nuts, seeds, and berries! Nandina berries, pinecones, rose hips, acorns, Magnolia seed pods, and a host of other things can be used for accents. Beauty berry can also provide unusual color to your decorations. » I mentioned last month about buying your cut tree from someone you trust. My advice hasn’t changed. Don’t buy a cut tree from just anyplace. If you do, make sure your homeowners’ insurance is paid up. » Poinsettias are fragile, temperamental, and tropical. Treat them as the plant divas that they are. Better yet, buy them from us so you’ll have instructions on how to care for them. If you have questions, call. » Remember that Meadow View is a terrific source for gift giving. We have tools and gloves for the gardener, birding supplies for the bird enthusiast, and beautiful gifts for everyone else. If you don’t know what to get, we have gift certificates in any amount. If you have any questions or need more details on anything, give us a call or send an email to hello@meadowviewgreenhouse.com. From all of us at Meadow View, we wish you a very happy holiday season!

Unique Gifts HOLIDAY MARKETPLACE OFFERS AT IJAMS

T

“Every gift, though it be small, is in reality great if given with affection,” wrote Pindar, an ancient Greek lyric poet.

HE HOLIDAYS are upon us. Soon

the comfort foods will abound, carols will be heard everywhere, and the general hustle and bustle of the season will fully take over. This is the perfect time to start thinking of the gifts you will be giving to others this year, and what better way than to shop local. Ijams Nature Center is home to a gift shop filled with the works of more than 35 local artists, crafters, and designers. Everything from local jams, beautiful jewelry, wood-turned bowls, handmade soaps, and even honey from Ijams’ own beehives line the shelves. There is something for everybody in the gift shop. Plus, this year we are hosting our Second Annual Holiday Marketplace on December 7 from 12:30 to 5 pm. More than 40 vendors with all sorts of handmade items will fill the Visitor Center to show off their crafted wares. In addition, we will have live holiday music, food, a beer and wine garden, and kids craft stations throughout the center. You won’t want to miss out on all the festivities at Ijams this season. When you buy from a locally owned small business, you are ultimately supporting your community, not some national big box store.

More of your money stays home. Locally owned small businesses also reduce environmental impact. Their products require less transportation, and small businesses either work out of their homes or set up shop in town as opposed to developing on the fringe. This means less sprawl, congestion, habitat loss, and pollution. Keeping it local, including where we shop, where we eat, and have fun – like a family outing to Ijams –develops a strong sense of community. Our one-of-a-kind artisans are an integral part of the distinctive character of Knoxville. Ijams Public Programs The grounds and trails will be open throughout the month of December, but the Visitor Center will be closed from December 22 to January 4 so our staff can have time with their families. But, before that, the inventive education staff at Ijams has several special programs planned for early December. Stephen Lyn will host another “Birding Brunch” at Cove Lake on Saturday, December 13. He’ll be looking for wintering waterfowl like gadwalls, mergansers, and coots. On the same day, green thumb Peg Beute will host a “Gifts from the Garden” program, and on select Saturday mornings, Peg or Jill will be

serving breakfast for visitors. David Spakes hosts Science Café on Tuesday, December 2. The topic is “3-D Printing.” Sabrina DeVault-Greene will host an after-work Happy Hour Hike on Tuesday, December 9. Free Creature Feature animal programs are also regular happenings on Saturdays. For information about any of these programs, including dates, start times, fees, and registration, call 865-577-4717, ext. 110, or visit www.ijams.org/events. Nature Almanac After most of the leaves have fallen from the trees, a few bright red dogwood berries are still hanging on. The last shrub to actually bloom is witch hazel. You can find several around the Plaza Pond. At the quarry sites, great horned owls have begun their courtship, preparing to start a family next month, while wintering waterfowl can sometimes be spotted on the quarry lake. The groundhog that lives behind the Visitor Center is in deep hibernation, as are the bullfrogs and toads. As always, Ijams welcomes you in all seasons, 12 months of the year. Sarah Brobst is gift shop manager, volunteer coordinator, and jack-of-all-trades at Ijams. Stephen Lyn Bales is senior naturalist at Ijams and the author of Natural Histories and Ghost Birds published by UT Press and available in the Ijams gift shop. December 2014 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Updating Your Home’s Tub and Shower Enclosures TIRED OF that sliding shower door that refuses

to roll open effortlessly, comes off its track, or makes enough noise to wake the neighbor’s dog? Then it’s time to replace it with a semi-frameless sliding door from Creative Reflections. Creative Reflections specializes in the removal and replacement of semi-frameless glass sliding doors. Our quality glass sliding enclosures don’t have that cheap, outdated look, nor do they cost an arm and a leg. The sliding glass enclosures we offer are far superior to the doors you’re likely familiar with or those available at the big box stores. Most homeowners prefer the appearance of frameless glass. We offer a variety of alternatives for tubs and shower areas where a frameless swing door configuration may not be the best option. The semiframeless enclosures are constructed of heavier gauge aluminum and thicker glass (3/8 inch) for a more luxurious look and feel. We also offer taller glass sliding units for shower areas, which makes them look and feel more rigid and sturdy. One of the most important improvements in sliding door configurations is the use of top rollers only. Our sliding doors are suspended from a roller system inside the header, and because there are no bottom rollers, there’s no need for a bottom frame on the glass. Select from several glass options such as ultraclear, low iron glass to highlight your shower ceramic tile designs. For more privacy, we offer a rain patterned glass option. We can also add decorative knobs or towel bars to the doors for additional convenience. Our semi-frameless sliding doors come standard with an easy clean bottom rail, so there’s no more trapped water, soap residue, or body oils which collect in the bottom grooves, creating an unsightly mess. The header bar is constructed of heavy gauge sidewalls, making it much more stable. Combined with the lifetime warranty on the smooth and quiet rollers, family members from young children to seniors will enjoy many years of trouble-free service from these easy to care for sliding glass doors. We offer a 10 year guarantee, in addition to applying a special glass sealer for easy maintenance. Simply squeegee the glass after each shower, and it’ll continue to look like the day it was installed. If you’re ready to update your home’s tub and shower enclosures, I invite you to call us today.

How Many Ways Are There to Clean an Oriental Rug? TRUTH BE told, probably hundreds of methods.

As many as the human mind can conjure up. I’ve heard of Oriental rugs being washed on the driveway using the garden hose, dishwashing detergent, and a stiff broom. Some Oriental rugs, placed on hardwood floors, have been cleaned using the same methods as those used to clean wall-to-wall carpeting. Then there are the rugs that are taken outside to be beaten with a house broom. There may be hundreds of ways to clean an Oriental rug, but based on decades of experience, and after considerable input from Oriental rug experts, including rug weavers themselves, there’s only one way to clean them thoroughly and safely, and that is by washing them. The problem is that an 8x10 rug can weigh a couple hundred pounds when wet and is nearly impossible to wash by hand. That’s why we designed our very own rug spa that uses our proprietary 11-step washing process that will thoroughly and safely wash your fine Oriental

We can clean heirloom rugs (centerpiece of your entertainment) and have them back in time for your Christmas parties or gathering. From our house to your home, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year! rugs. Our highly specialized process allows us to safely move your rugs throughout our facility through our multiple step inspection process, dye stabilization test, pre-vacuuming, pre-conditioning, washing, water extraction, pH neutralizing, drying, grooming and combing, fringe cleaning, post-vacuuming, and inspection. As is plain to see, it is next to impossible to duplicate this process on your driveway, in your home, or in your backyard. In fact, many of these alternative methods can actually damage your rugs by abrading them on concrete surfaces, causing the dyes to migrate (bleed), or by adversely changing your rug’s pH. Not a DIYer project, Oriental rug washing is best left to an experienced professional – that is, if you value your rugs and your back. OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW December 11 & 12 • 8 PM // Tennessee Theatre

OLD CROW Medicine Show (OCMS) have come full circle playing their own brand of American roots music with a rock and roll attitude. They met in New York in 1998 and hit the road, traveling city to city in a van and busking in the streets. They eventually settled for a year in North Carolina, where they ran into a bit of good fortune while playing in front of a local pharmacy to an impressed Doc Watson; the folk icon promptly scheduled the band to play at his MerleFest. Soon after, OCMS relocated to Nashville and found themselves gracing the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, touring with Merle Haggard, and regularly appearing on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion. OCMS can attribute much of their

Aside from being germ carriers, rodents can chew through your electrical wires in the attic, crawl space, and inside the walls, creating a potential fire hazard. One of their favorite places to gather is in the kitchen looking for food or water. Their taste preferences are not too picky, for dog and cat food is fair game. These bouquets will be delivered to individuals in area hospitals, assisted living facilities, hospice care centers, and community health organizations. The key to the swift journey from donation to delivery is the dozens of dedicated Random Acts of Flowers (RAF) volunteers. The bouquets created by their efforts spread joy to recipients, and medical research shows that a positive attitude quickens the healing time associated with illness. There are many ways to get involved with RAF. Volunteers can pick up floral and vase donations, deconstruct donated floral arrangements, create beautiful bouquets, assist with workshop organization, process donated vases, and assist at special events. Many groups and organizations will hold vase drives. To date, RAF has recycled more

In honor of #GivingTuesday, we hope you find a way to get involved with RAF’s mission – and share with others. RAF has delivered more than 40,000 bouquets in Knoxville, and each delivery is a special, unexpected moment of kindness. The impact is felt not only by recipients, but also by family members, nurses, facility staff members, and many more. “I love volunteering with RAF because it keeps my hands in the dirt and flowers, keeping my mind up to speed with other sharp friends,” said Bettie Kurtz, RAF volunteer. “I arrive with a smile, hang on to smiles from fellow volunteers, and then pass smiles along to others through our floral bouquets.” Random Acts of Flowers recycles and repurposes flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities across the country. T’S ALL ABOUT

the bedding and the textures,” Kathy said to Diane when they started working and designing one of her guest bedrooms. Kathy has a beautiful home with an abundance of gorgeous jewel tone color schemes, but it was time to create something “a little bit different” than the rest of the house. The majority of the furniture pieces at her house are brown or black in color; however, the whitewashed guest bed and dresser gave Diane enough inspiration to go into a different direction with this room design. To create enough contrast for furniture and fabrics, they selected a darker gray/taupe (equestrian gray from Benjamin Moore) for the walls. The custom linen draperies reflect that same color scheme in a slightly different hue and added more texture. Kathy mentioned that she would like for it to be “romantic without being over the

top.” So Diane added a little extra bling-bling by installating a chandelier over the bed with antique silver leaving. The bedding is a combination of linen and silk fabrics with a machine washable taupe coverlet for easy cleaning. The hand-knotted rug is a mix of small over-dyed and distressed rugs that create a patchwork design, and this was Kathy’s absolute favorite! A few other items from the store, like the original oil painting and the hydrangea floral, added the finishing touches and completed decorating this romantic guest bedroom.

Antonia Bennett I

N THIS day and age, when families

– both “average” and celebrity – are torn apart, it’s always refreshing to see a family who appears to have it all together. This is especially true of any family whose life is lived in a fish bowl and in the spotlight of fame. Such is the case of Tony Bennett and his relationship with his lovely daughter, Antonia. These two have the fortunate blessing of being able to work together on stage often in recent years. Classically trained and further schooled by her legendary father, Antonia is receiving kudos as a singer in her own right with successful touring and a catalog of work that is garnering lots of positive attention. During a recent chat with Boomerocity, Antonia chatted about her dad’s influence on her career so far and her new album, Embrace Me. Commenting on how it is working with M r. B e n n e t t a n d what she’s observed, A ntonia sa id, “ We really get along with one another and care about each other, and I do realize what a special opportunity this is. There are not ver y m a ny people who have got to do this with their parents. I do understand what a blessing it is.” What she’s learned from traveling and performing with her dad, A ntonia sa id, “I think the biggest thing is rea l ly his endurance level and how he never really compla ins about things. If something comes up last minute and he just has to do it, he does it, and he’s less tired than any of us. I don’t know how to explain it, because it’s just something that he innately has or because he grew up in the depression and it’s a different mentality. I think that’s part of it, but I think, with him, it goes beyond that. He definitely has this surge of energy in moments where we all should be extraordinarily tired or are always extraordinarily tired. He finds the energy to push though and make it happen

in a very natural and effortless way and still in a very kind of thankful way. “I think that the other thing is when you see somebody of his stature that has had such a long career – and he really has had a remarkable long career – we all wish that we could have the longevity that he does. But I’ve seen him through a lot of different phases i n my l i fe. I n my lifetime, I’ve seen his career go through a lot of phases. The thing that comes home to me is that, whatever level you’re at, there’s always perks and there’s always problems. Problems and the perks might be different on one level than they are another, but it’s the same thing. It just manifests in kind of a different way. The idea of being able to look at something and problem solve and again push through it and really be thankful for the experience and to be there and to be able to do this in front of people and they love what you are doing and you love what you’re doing. That’s really such

“The songs on this record are really the songs that I grew up listening to ...”

a special thing. “It is interesting how you feel when something like that happens when you watch your parents get older,” Antonia continued. “Obviously my dad is in great health. You see the changes. It is interesting how it puts you in a position to be able to let go of a lot of stuff when you’re thinking for them or of them in that way.” Antonia excitedly talked about her new album, Embrace Me. “The songs on this record are really the songs that I grew up listening to,” she said. “This record was made really spur of the moment. I knew I had always wanted to do a jazz project. I was in New York, and I called up my friend, Paul Nowinski, who was the bass player on that record, and I said, ‘I’m in town.’ He said, ‘Oh, I have a great trio right now that I’m working with, and you should see if you can get some studio time.’ So, it kind of manifested like that. “It was a very natural progression, and because we had played together for so many years, there was a comfort level there. We did some of our favorite songs. It was a very collaborative process. We went into the studio, and I think that you can really see the collaborative nature between the musicians. You can see that we’re having a good time. It’s something, again, that I really feel came very naturally and organically. We have wishful thinking for a potential Grammy nomination, and we’re just kind of moving forward and hoping to get this out there.” Embrace Me is available online and wherever quality music is sold.

A Special Gift for the Car Enthusiast on Your Holiday Shopping List

100%

SATISFACTION GUARANTEE

WE ALL KNOW someone who takes great

pride in their automobile’s appearance, and dents and dings in their otherwise perfect car’s finish diminishes the pride they once had in their vehicle. Well, here’s the perfect holiday gift for the car lover on your Christmas shopping list – a gift card from Advantage PDR. So just what is PDR? It’s a craft where a highly skilled and experienced technician gently removes dents and dings from an automobile’s exterior without removing the paint. Thanks in large part to the high-tech paints applied at the factory, today’s paints offer a degree of flexibility that makes PDR such an attractive alternative to the conventional repairs performed at most body shops. With PDR, the savings mount up quickly. The typical estimate from a body shop to repair a minor dent ranges from $350 to $500 and even higher. At Advantage PDR, small dents and dings can usually be repaired in several hours or less and at a savings of hundreds of dollars. But the real advantage offered by Advantage PDR goes far beyond both the cost and time savings. It means that your automobile’s surface will look as great as it did when it left the showroom. You’ve got Advantage PDR’s unconditional guarantee on that. It also means that there is no grinding required, fillers or primers used, and that your car’s original factory paint remains in place. Try as hard as they may, it’s difficult for a body shop to perfectly match an automobile’s original factory paint color. That’s why it’s so important to retain your vehicle’s original factory paint. So if that car lover on your holiday shopping list is obsessing over their car’s once perfect finish, why not give them a gift certificate from Advantage PDR? Advantage PDR can restore their favorite vehicle’s finish to its original new showroom look – all while saving time and money. For that perfect holiday gift that will be remembered long after Christmas has passed, give an Advantage PDR gift certificate this holiday season.

or not, every vehicle manufactured ha s recom mended schedu led service intervals that are designed to keep your automobile operating at its peak level of performance. Following these recommended service intervals will result in fewer major repairs later on and more trouble-free performance. Best of all, the car is likely to last far longer than one that is ignored. Seems simple enough. So why do so many vehicle owners defer the recommended service on their cars? Lack of awareness is often the cause, not to mention the cost of repairs. There’s no denying that proper automotive maintenance comes at a cost, but the cost of deferred maintenance comes at a far greater cost. Here are a few maintenance areas that demonstrate just how expensive repair costs can be when regular routine maintenance is ignored. » Not keeping up with your brakes can more than double the cost of repairs if you have to pay for new rotors or calipers. » A discharged battery will put a greater load on your alternator, which can make it fail sooner. » Going too long between oil changes can lead to sludge build-up, which can clog oil passages and starve the engine of lubrication. » Regularly changing your transmission fluid can double the life of your transmission. » A timing belt that breaks because it wasn’t changed at the proper interval can result in the engine needing replaced. » Worn out ignition components will cause poor fuel economy, resulting in higher fuel costs. At Christian Brothers Automotive, we offer a full array of automotive maintenance and repair services for both new and older automobiles, domestic and foreign, gasoline and diesel. Our ASE-Certified technicians offer experienced and expert service using the latest and most advanced diagnostic equipment available anywhere in Knoxville. And we go even further by offering a two-year/24,000 mile warranty, whichever benefits you most, on most repairs. ASE-Certified technicians, extended service warranty, complimentary shuttle, straight talk with no technical mumbo jumbo, and a reputation for honesty and integrity combine to provide you with the peace of mind you deserve while ensuring that your vehicle performs efficiently and safely, resulting in years of trouble-free service.

rehabilitation. Often buildings that were constructed for a specific purpose become vacant without a new use. Our sixth award recipient, Dennis Patterson, saw an opportunity to repurpose the Union County Jail when his son needed a new place to practice law. Patterson purchased the building and put it back into use as a law office. We commend his efforts to give new purpose to the Union County Jail. One of our greatest challenges and big-

Preservation Alliance is proud to present our 2014 Preservation Awards. These individuals and projects represent the absolute best in East Tennessee Preservation. Recipients were recognized as a part of our annual East Tennessee Preservation Conference held last month in Oak Ridge. Many of our preservation awards are presented to those who made significant efforts toward preservation within our 16-county region. We presented our first award to Wheatlands Plantation in Sevier County for their commitment to providing public access to the historic property. Owners John Burns and Richard Parker have lovingly restored this Federal style plantation house, which was originally constructed in 1791, then rebuilt after a major fire in 1825. In addition to many special events, the owners welcome the public to tour the house by appointment throughout the winter. Monroe County was presented with our second award, for their ongoing efforts to repair, preserve, and restore the 1897 Monroe County Courthouse in Madisonville, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Monroe County government has embraced the challenge of caring for a historic courthouse and assumed the cost and time involved in preserving the historic structure. We commend Monroe County for their efforts to retain their historic courthouse.

Our third award was presented to Brenda and David Bryan, owners of 209 N. Main Street in Sweetwater, Tennessee. The Bryans won our Preservation Courage Award this year for the gutsy move to remove late 20th century corrugated siding from the front of their commercial building in downtown 64

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2014

Sweetwater. This was a risky move, because they did not know what was underneath the covering on the upper floors. Their leap of faith paid off when the siding was removed to reveal the original brick storefront in relatively good shape. We commend them for their courage, and we can’t wait to see the building completely finished. Regina and Jeff Merritt, the recipients of our fourth award, continue to preserve homes in Norris. Displaced by the construction of Norris Dam, the first TVA hydroelectric dam, many residents were displaced and moved to a planned community nearby. The community, which was also named Norris, remains a beautiful community, much of which is listed as a district in the National Register of Historic Places. Regina and Jeff Merritt received an award this year for the work on 52 Pine Road. Their continued efforts have helped to keep Norris a beautiful historic community. While many of our awards recognize historic structures, this year’s fifth award was presented to an event, Albert Miller Lea Day. Held on July 26, 2014, at Richland in Blaine, the first Albert Miller Lea Day was a great success. The day’s events honored Albert Miller Lea, one of the most famous residents of Grainger County. According to the event’s Facebook page, “Lea worked for four presidents, was friends with Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis, kin to Sam Houston, fought in the Civil War, gave the state of Iowa its name, and has a town in Minnesota named after him.” The Albert Miller Lea Foundation accepted the award. We look forward to the next annual Albert Miller Lea Day in 2015! Some historic buildings are harder than others to find a suitable use through

gest successes is the adaptive reuse of the Alexander Inn. Originally known as The Guest House, the building was constructed in Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project to provide lodging for official visitors. Later converted to an inn, the building is included in the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property within the Oak Ridge Historic District. Formerly on our list of endangered resources within East Tennessee, the Alexander Inn will soon serve a new purpose as an assisted living and retirement facility. It is our extreme pleasure to recognize Rick Dover and the Family Pride Corporation and Ethiel Garlington, former Director of Field Services for Knox Heritage and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance, for their hard work and dedication to ensure the adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of the Alexander Inn. The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance relies heavily upon volunteer support. We are proud to announce that Barbara Stagg was awarded our eighth award, volunteer of the year. In addition to Barbara’s work with the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance, Knox Heritage, and Historic Rugby, she played a critical role in helping the state acquire the Stonecipher-Kelly-McCartt House, near Wartburg, to incorporate it into Frozen Head State Park in Morgan County. Although she has gone on to bigger and better things in Colorado, we are sure she will be paying close attention to what happens in Rugby and Morgan County. We will announce our annual endangered properties list in the spring and look forward to the preservation successes that can be celebrated through next year’s awards. The 2015 awards will be announced as a part of the East Tennessee Preservation Conference to be held in downtown Knoxville in 2015.

WHAT’S NEW FOR 2014-15 AT SKI LAKE TAHOE RESORTS

Alpine Meadows has renamed its upper terrain to the Pacific Crest Bowls in tribute to the famed Pacific Crest Trail, which spans the entire length of Alpine’s ridgeline. Adventerous skiers and snowboarders can enlist in the new The North Face Mountain Guide program to gain priority lift-line access and explore these hike to powder stashes with the resort’s most experienced guides, even venturing to neighboring Squaw Valley, as the service will be offered there as well. Guests can also anticipate two new dining experiences, the first being Stoked Oak blending St. Louis barbeque with Santa Maria-style grilling, and the second combining a pleasant snowshoe hike under the stars to the mid-mountain Chalet at Alpine Meadows for an intimate Swiss-style dinner. bash each Friday and Saturday at East Peak Lodge, and Tailgate at Tamarack on Sundays showcasing NFL games and drink specials, both supplementing the resort’s signature Unbuckle at Tamarack après ski parties featuring the Heavenly Angles. The resort will be kicking things off with Winter Ignite, a two-weekend event that is headlined by a free concert by Young the Giant on December 13. On the slopes, Heavenly has expanded the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system, focusing on the beginner terrain at the top of the Heavenly Gondola, as well as the Skyline Trail connecting the California and Nevada sides of the resort. Heavenly Sports will be doubling the size of its rental fleet and streamlining the process by integrating with Heavenly’s Ski and Ride School. The terrain will be accessed via enclosed snowcat by groups of no more than 10 people as part of a fully guided experience. Powder aficionados can also take advantage of the resort’s new First Tracks Breakfast program, another VIP experience combining a hearty morning meal and access to the slopes an hour before the general public. Guests can now gain an insider’s perspective to the resort’s legendary terrain and powder stashes thanks to the new EpicMix Guide, an interactive application

Travel that draws from more than 350 unique itineraries to generate a customized trail map to experience Kirkwood like a longtime local. Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe has also increased its snowmaking capabilities by more than 50%, particularly in their beginner areas, which were also the focus of significant upgrades in the form of widened runs and smoother trail transitions. the Audi FIS Skicross World Cup, and the FIS Snowboard World Cup. Following in the footsteps of the resort’s very successful Wanderlust Festival, Squaw Valley will be hosting the entirely new WinterWonderGrass Tahoe during late March, a festival that combines bluegrass and roots music with craft beers and regional wines. The resort will be launching new “Mountain to Mat” workshops this season incorporating a guided half day on the mountain, afternoon yoga classes at the Wanderlust Yoga Studio, mini-spa treatments at Trilogy Spa, and locally-sourced breakfast/lunch for $169/person, $229 including lift ticket. Big Ears Festival Reveals Initial 2015 Lineup

Laurie Anderson, Terry Riley, tUnE-yArDs, Max Richter, Swans, Ben Frost, The Bad Plus, Bill Frisell, Jamie xx, and many more join artists-in-residence Kronos Quartet

LENDING THE FINEST in

contemporary classical music with groundbreaking indie rock bands, leading jazz greats, visionary folk artists, and the indefinable avant-garde, the internationally acclaimed Big Ears Festival reveals its initial lineup for the 2015 festival, taking place March 27-29 in downtown Knoxville at the historic Tennessee and Bijou Theatres, the intimate Square Room, the Knoxville Museum of Art, and more. Previously announced artists-in-residence Kronos Quartet will perform several concerts throughout the festival weekend, including collaborations with several guest artists. One such collaboration will see the iconic Laurie Anderson performing her Kronos collaboration, “Landfall,” inspired by Anderson’s experience of Hurricane Sandy and praised by The New York Times as “awash in elegiac string sounds and postmillennial gloom.” Other Kronos collaborators will include Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, The National guitarist/composer and Big Ears alum Bryce Dessner, and 2014 Polaris Music Prize recipient Tanya Tagaq. Composer Terry Riley, whose work has been championed by Kronos for decades, will also perform at the festival in celebration of his 80th birthday year. Acclaimed German composer Max Richter will collaborate with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra in a performance of his highly acclaimed “Vivialdi: The Four Seasons: Recomposed,” while also presenting a concert of his Chamber Music. Emblematic composer Harold Budd, known for his beautiful ambient music and his work with Brian Eno and the Cocteau Twins, will present a rare live concert, alongside bassist Keith Lowe, celebrating the breadth of his monumental work, “a source of appreciation for the sounds and sights around us” writes NPR. Rounding out the festival will be an exciting cast of contemporary artists featuring tUnEyArDs, Jamie xx, Perfume Genius, Ben Frost, Grouper and more, including Michael Gira’s

seminal New York rock outfit Swans, virtuosic guitarist Steve Gunn, evocative psychedelic rocker Amen Dunes, and the hypnotic rock of SQÜRL, comprised of Jim Jarmusch, Carter Logan, and Shane Stoneback. In addition, leading contemporary jazz trio The Bad Plus, along with revered guitarist and composer Bill Frisell, will appear at the festival. This year Big Ears will also celebrate its Appalachian roots with performances by folk artist Sam Amidon and Rhiannon Giddens, founding member of Grammy-winning oldtime revivalists Carolina Chocolate Drops. For the complete initial lineup, visit www.BigEarsFestival.com. Another exciting component of the 2015 festival will be the opportunity for music to interface with film, visual art, and more. Big Ears will also offer special discussion sessions with the artists and a variety of special events and secret shows. Lineup additions, details on all Big Ears interactive projects and activities, and more will be revealed leading into the festival. Weekend passes are on sale now at the special rate of $153.50 plus fees while supplies last. After that, tickets will be priced at $178.50 plus fees before moving to the final allotment at $199.50 plus fees. Single day passes will be made available if supplies last at a future date to be announced in early 2015. A portion of each ticket sold will benefit music and arts education programs through Knoxville’s own Joy of Music School and Community School of the Arts. In addition to the donation, Big Ears will host exclusive opportunities for students to interact with festival artists and attend special workshops, aligning with their mission of providing a musical education and mentorship to the disadvantaged that would not exist otherwise. as “the most ambitious avant-garde festival to emerge in America in more than a decade,” Big Ears Festival brings together musicians and artists who span generations and transcend genres for dozens of concerts along with installations, exhibitions, film screenings, interactive workshops, informative talks, surprise collaborations, and unexpected connections. Big Ears debuted in 2009 in Knoxville with a line-up that included Philip Glass & Wendy Sutter, Antony & the Johnsons, Jon Hassell, the Necks, Fennesz, and Pauline Oliveros. In 2014, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steve Reich, proclaimed “our greatest living composer” by The New York Times, served as the artist-in-residence. The brilliant Ensemble Signal performed his 1976 masterpiece, Music for 18 Musicians, along with his new Radio Rewrite, inspired by two songs from rock band Radiohead. Radiohead’s guitarist Jonny Greenwood performed Reich’s Electric Counterpoint, and the masterful So Percussion presented his 1971 classic Drumming during the weekend as well. may not be proper for current family members or the newest family member, the puppy. Proper preparation is key for successful adoption. Here are key steps: » Have time for lots of attention and love. New toys and video games may distract children from caring for the new family member. Dog proof your home, including Christmas trees and ornaments. Roll up the rugs. A dog may be housebroken, but stress may cause accidents. Use a leash – you’re still a stranger to the dog, and a squirrel may be of more interest. » Proper introductions. If you have other pets, introduce the new dog slowly. Don’t leave animals alone together or force a bond. They will form relationships at their own pace. Resist visitors until your new dog feels comfortable with your home and family members. Instead, use Facebook to show off your new pet with photos. » Establish boundaries. Shelter dogs have been confined to smaller areas. Plants, furniture, kids, and other pets may cause sensory overload. Carolyn Burkhart TWIG CHILDREN’S BOUTIQUE

AS THE OWNER of Twig Children’s

Boutique, one thing Carolyn Burkhart loves about her job is giving people the chance to dress their children in special, unique clothing. “The one thing I hear over and over is that everyone loves Twig because we offer clothing lines for children that you can’t buy at the mall or anywhere else in Knoxville,” said Carolyn. “That uniqueness has made Twig the perfect shopping venue for children and infants.” Twig has been in business in Knoxville since May 2013, but Carolyn just bought the store in June of 2014. “I really never intended to buy a children’s boutique,” she said. “I was actually looking for retail space for my other business, which is selling a high-end line of women’s apparel, called Worth New York. I had thought that the space might be available since the former owner/founder of Twig was moving. When I learned that the space was not vacant but that Twig was for sale, I immediately fell in love with the boutique and decided to purchase

it. I have always enjoyed learning new things, taking on challenges, and working with people. Twig fit the bill perfectly! “I’m very fortunate, because I have great employees,” Carolyn continued. “I have a wonderful store manager who manages the day-to-day activities. I spend most of my time interacting with customers, buying for the store, and focusing on marketing strategies and events.” Twig offers brand-name apparel for infants to size 16 for girls and size 7 for boys. The major lines the store carries include Mayoral, Persnickety, Mustard Pie, Pink Chicken, Aden & Anais, TEA, and more. “The best thing about owning Twig has been the wonderful people I have met and the relationships I have developed, including the little kids,” said Carolyn. “I love being able to offer unique, high-quality children’s clothing.” In the future, Carolyn looks forward to the opportunity to grow her business’ presence in East Tennessee.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to continue to offer a product that can’t be found anywhere else in Knoxville, attract new customers, grow the business, and expand the options and lines we offer,” she said. Twig Children’s Boutique is located at 5036 Kingston Pike in Knoxville. For more information, call 865.200.5731 or shop online at http://twig-childrens-boutique.myshopify.com.

Adam Hasan ADAM HASAN is just a typical high

school senior – if typical seniors serve as Bearden High School’s class president, co-founder of Model UN, and founder of the Youth in Government’s Constitution Club, among other activities. Joking aside, Adam is an exceptional student and the student representative to the Knox County Board of Education for 2014-2015 and was recently chosen by the Tennessee School Boards Association to receive its Statewide Student Recognition Award. The award recognizes students who have distinguished themselves in academics, community, service, and leadership. “It’s a huge honor to get an award like that, given how much I care about education policy and the well-being of students in public schools,” said Adam. “While it gives me some personal validation for my endeavors, more than anything it inspires me to continue fighting for public education. As a district and community, we’ve made a lot of progress, but 72

there’s still a lot of work to do, and I intend to stay involved as much as ever.” Adam has not decided which college he’ll attend yet, but he’s considering several, including the University of Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, Stanford, and Georgetown. He plans to major in economics or public policy. “I like to keep myself busy and try new things,” he said. “I’m always looking for ways to leave my school or community in a better condition than I found it, so I really try to do that regardless of the activity I’m working on.” Adam’s academics and extracurricular activities take up most of his weekdays. “My academics usually keep me pretty busy,” he said. “Some mornings I have to go to school early for meetings for student government or

When Enthusiasm Trumps Common Sense ALTHOUGH IT’S a common misconcep-

tion that 80% of all new business start-ups fail in their first year, a failure rate of 35% in the first two years, according to the SBA, is nonetheless a daunting statistic. So why do 35% of all new businesses fail in only the first two years and 55% in five years? Enthusiasm. That’s right, enthusiasm. The same essential characteristic that can be the catalyst to success in small business can also result in its failure. Explain? If unbridled enthusiasm leads you to ignore answering key questions relating to your start-up, your potential for success will be greatly diminished. Too often, new entrepreneurs, who dislike the answers to these questions, often ignore them, convincing themselves instead that they be the exception. They rarely are. Before you leap in to the world of entrepreneurship, ask yourself the following questions:

So why do 35% of all new businesses fail in only the first two years and 55% in five years? Enthusiasm. » How much capital will I need to get started? You’ll need at least six months of capital until you become profitable, probably more. Don’t rely on sales as a substitute for working capital. Also, don’t expect a paycheck, and don’t exclude any expense items. Remember utilities, insurance, advertising, employees, etc. » Who’s the competition? Will you be able to successfully compete against a well-positioned competitor? Can you successfully differentiate your products

Business

and services, or will you be viewed as just one more competitor in a sea of generics? » Location, location, location. If you’ll be launching a brick and motor store, location is imperative. If you select an obscure location in order to save rent, you’re flirting with disaster. Don’t roll the dice on location. The money you save on rent will likely be more than offset by lost revenues. Owning a small business can be a very rewarding experience when you follow a well-thought out and carefully implemented plan developed with your eyes wide open. Don’t substitute enthusiasm for logic and common sense. Reserve your problem solving skills for the unexpected and not the self-inflicted obstacles you may elect to ignore.

Utilizing the Great Equalizer IT WAS YEARS ago when I arrived at a

conference about time management. I felt like a big wig and a boss as a young professional who’d just been promoted. With my impressive new title and business card, I sat with pen and paper, eager to learn the secrets behind successful prioritization. Determined to put into practice what we were being taught, I was ready to master the skill of time management. After our instructor told us how to separate our work life from our home life, I began the attempt to compartmentalize the various components of life. Right. Never once could I work a day without thinking about something that had nothing to do with work. My Friday night plans would linger in my mind. The workout I’d missed haunted me. The thought of spending more time with family would invade my thoughts at important meetings. Epic fail. It was time to get real with life management 101. Very few places do we not have to compete with others on just about everything. It’s exhausting to continually be compared to someone over something. Yet one key component levels the playing field for everyone.

Time. It is the great equalizer. You get the same 24 hours as me. The President of the United States or the boss of your company does not get extra because they are busy. You and me? We get the same. That makes us equals. This became my point of leverage. Finally I’d identified how to level the playing field. Working harder? Well, it could help climb that ladder to success. Yet if I used my time wisely, then it seemed ok to allow everything to jumble together like giant pieces of a puzzle that came together as my life. According to statisticbrain.com, 77% of people regularly experience stress that manifests in various physical symptoms. That trickles down into relationships, health, wellness, and ultimately our quality of life. Then we wonder why we are not happy. We must simplify life while refusing to prey to the insanity of

trying to do all and be all. Use your 24 hours well. It’s that simple. Enjoy them. Use them intentionally. Don’t waste them. De-clutter the junk. Let others off the hook with minor infractions. Quit taking ourselves too seriously. When you get knocked down, get back up. Start over. It’s a new day. That wonderful clock starts over. As we approach the end of the year, use the opportunity to evaluate time. Where are you stressed? Eliminate something. Seems everyone is busy, but few are fulfilled and feel as though there is a trajectory towards something meaningful. Only you can fix that for you and me for me. We must become better at enjoying our life. Time? It’s the great equalizer. Use it, spend it, invest it. This is how and where you separate yourselves from others. Let it be the gift you give yourself and others this Christmas. Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Family Life

The Christmas Spirit Don’t let today’s economic conditions or the commercialism of the holidays put a damper on your Christmas spirit.

REGARDLESS OF OUR AGE , the

month of December often transports us back to our childhood. Most of us remember the anticipation of putting up the Christmas tree, the excitement of seeing colorful packages, visiting Santa, going to church services, caroling, delivering food baskets to the needy and shut-ins, and other various traditions we had with our relatives and family friends. It was a magical time. These types of memories are just now being written upon the minds of today’s children. This is why we must make sure we do not lose sight of what is truly important this holiday season. As Calvin Coolidge said, “Christmas is not a time or season; it is a state of mind.” No matter your current situation or the commercialism that now surrounds the holiday, what attitudes and memories will you be planting into your children’s memories this Christmas? Will they see a grumpy Scrooge who is a bah-humbugger or someone who walks out the spirit of Christmas? What exactly is the spirit of Christmas?

It is different things to different people and is based upon your religious and personal beliefs. At the root of most beliefs, however, is the spirit of love, giving, cheerfulness, and thankfulness. When you get time, close your eyes and think back to your most cherished childhood

Christmas memories. What made them special, magical, and sentimental for you? Doing this trip back into your past will help you on your quest to discovering the spirit of Christmas. It will also guide you in walking out the spirit of Christmas so you can hand it down to your children. Don’t let today’s economic conditions or the commercialism of the holidays put a damper on your Christmas spirit. Remember, it is the small things that mean the most – like time, love, helping others, and togetherness – and that is what our children should see the adults in their lives walking out before them. Why? Those are the seeds that grow wonderful Christmas memories. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Is There Room in Your Life to Help? REGARDLESS OF YOUR FAITH

or belief system, I hope you have a blessed month and are able to count your blessings. Recently I’ve been pondering the goodness of my life. No, my life isn’t perfect, but there is no doubt that I’m one of the lucky ones. The truth is, most of us are. If you’re reading this, more than likely you live in a pretty decent neighborhood, with probably two cars or more in your driveway. You also probably have a garage, closets, and maybe even a storage unit to store all the stuff that you can’t fit into your home. I would also imagine that you rarely go to bed hungry and your children never do. You live in a country where you can choose what you want to do with your life, how you want to worship, who you want to vote for, and the path that you plan to follow. You also live in a city where there are hospitals that can care for you when you’re sick, grocery stores that are overflowing with food, and schools that help educate your children. Why am I reminding you of all this? Because there are many in our city and around the world that do not enjoy all of these things. If 74

you’re someone that has enjoyed success, I hope that you will consider becoming active in a community organization or international organization that strives to make a difference in people’s lives. It’s time to get involved. Years ago I was sitting in a meeting where someone spoke on service opportunities in Knoxville. They handed out a list of about 30 different local organizations that needed volunteers. I was so surprised at the variety and need for help. I picked one of those organizations, and for the past eight years, I have had the privilege of serving this truly inspiring organization. I’m not telling you this so you can say “good job, Monica.” I’m telling you so you can consider that regardless of how busy you are, regardless of how much you doubt you can fit anything else into your schedule, there is always room to serve. When we’re too busy to serve others and share what we’ve been given, then we’re simply too busy. I have gained more than I have given. It’s a quality of all ladies and gentlemen to be actively involved in good causes, to be participators and not merely observers

of community efforts, and to look for opportunities to lift those who need lifting. We can talk all day and all month about how to improve our manners and our ability to succeed, and it will improve our circumstances, but sometimes we need to take a break from focusing on ourselves and just focus on others. If you would like any suggestions or information regarding local organizations that need volunteers, please email me at Monica@ TheEtiquetteFactory.com.

that our neck and chest are left out of the daily skin care regimen, which means they are showing age at a much faster rate than our face. Clothing often exposes the chest to the sun, making it vulnerable to sun damage and signs of aging just like the face. It’s time to treat your chest as well as you do your face. While there are many energy-based

devices on the market that are used to treat wrinkles and lines on various surfaces of the skin, Ultherapy Décolletege Treatment is now the ONLY non-invasive procedure specifically indicated by the FDA to improve lines and wrinkles on the chest. The Ultherapy Décolletage Treatment is a safe, non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that takes only 30 minutes. With one single procedure, patients notice improvement in lines and wrinkles on the chest by using safe

ultrasound that stimulates the body’s natural collagen production. In addition to Ultherapy Décolletage Treatment, Ultherapy remains the only noninvasive procedure FDA cleared to lift skin on the neck, under the chin, and brow. Ultherapy is able to do this by going deeper into the tissue than lasers and radio frequency without injuring the surface of the skin. Another factor that promotes safety and maximizes results is that with Ultherapy, we can visualize the targeted areas. Results will unfold during the course of two to three months, with maximum improvement at six months. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound technology to bypass the delicate upper layers of skin and target deeper tissues. Think of a magnifying glass’s ability to focus sunlight into an extremely high temperature point capable of burning. This is similar to how Ultherapy works. While ultrasound technology does not duplicate the results of plastic surgery, Ultherapy is an inviting alternative for those who are not yet ready or who are not candidates for surgery.
