From the Publisher

WHEN I WAS in grade school,

classmates always exchanged Valentine cards. But in this digital age, paper cards are not used as often, and an email or digital Valentine just doesn’t have the same personal touch as a paper Valentine. My dad was a saver. He saved all the little mementos that my sister and I gave him throughout the years. When he passed away, we found a shoe box full of paper cards, given to my dad by my mom, sister, and me for a variety of occasions, that my dad saved. One in particular that touched me was a simple Valentine card with a little girl on it saying “To Daddy from his little girl.” On the inside, there was a simple sentiment only a little girl would say to her dad with a series of X’s 4

and O’s along with a signature written in my hand with the guidance of my mom. A card like that is just filled with sentiment and is more touching than anything “digital” can ever be. This Valentine’s Day give the special people in your life a personal sentiment and not just a digital version. That personal message you give will mean so much more and may be saved in a shoe box only to be discovered years later and bring back all those wonderful memories. In our February edition of Everything Knoxville, we have highlighted businesses that offer special gifts and services that have a personal touch, showing your Valentine that you took the time to find something just for them. Wishing all of you a Happy Valentine’s Day.

I

T IS MY P RIVIL EG E to announce the launching of Institute Aesthetics in response to the encouragement of many of our patients who have inquired about a variety of aesthetic procedures for both themselves and their family members. From non-invasive body contouring to dermal fillers and more, Institute Aesthetics, located within the Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine, offers both men and women the latest and most technologically advanced aesthetic services, all provided by the experienced, caring, and compassionate healthcare professionals you have come to trust for more than two decades. We have a lso added Mela n ie Williams, MA, to our staff. She has worked in the medical field for 20 years and is excited to assist in bringing these new technologies and services to our patients. The latest procedure that I am excited to announce is our exclusive, non-invasive body contouring service called SculpSure. The following most commonly asked questions may help you decide if SculpSure is right for you. You are also encouraged to contact us to learn more or to schedule an appointment. What is SculpSure? SculpSure is a non-invasive body

contouring system for the reduction of stubborn fat in areas such as the abdomen and love handles. The 25-minute procedure destroys up to 24% of treated fat cells without surgery. Is SculpSure right for me? SculpSure is ideal for people with trouble spots, particularly those that seem resistant to diet and exercise. How many treatments will I need? Most patients see results with as little as one treatment. However, some patients may wish to have additional treatments based on desired results. Ask your treatment provider about the best treatment plan for you. What should I expect during the treatment? Most patients feel a ting ling sensation intermittently throughout the treatment, which is generally well-tolerated. When will I see results? Many patients start to see results in as early as six weeks following treatment as the body begins to evacuate the destroyed fat cells, with optimal results usually seen at 12 weeks. How long will results last? Treated fat cells are permanently destroyed during the treatment and

will not regenerate. How long before I can resume normal activities? T her e i s no dow nt i me w it h SculpSure, so you can have the treatment during your lunch hour and return to work immediately. What is the difference between fat loss and weight loss? The number of fat cells stored in our bodies typically remain constant throughout adult life. After the SculpSure treatment, the destroyed fat cells will never return. However, as we lose weight, the size of fat cells become smaller but typically do not decrease in number. Even with diet and exercise, many people have difficulty losing weight in these trouble areas. The new standard in non-invasive body contouring, SculpSure can help you eliminate stubborn fat without surgery or downtime in as little as 25 minutes. FDA-approved, safe, and effective, discover what SculpSure can do for you today. Institute for Female Pelvic Medicine

Because we shared our personal experiences with so many of you, we discovered that you had the same natural curiosity about the potential health benefits of essential oils. Three years later, Knox Essential Oils has become a reality as a result of your growing requests for both essential oils and learning resources. Everyone can benefit from essential oils, and we are dedicated to sharing our knowledge. We feel this is our higher calling and certainly a passion. S

KIN FILLER manufacturers constantly introduce new products they say have great promise. Some will actually

live up to their expectations, while others will not. An important point when choosing a product is that some are just more appropriate than others, especially when treating different areas of the face. For example, the gold standard product for injecting/enhancing lips is a hyaluronic acid (HA) - a simple sugar. Therefore, a simple difference between one HA filler and another is the size of their respective particles, again stressing the importance of using the appropriate filler in the appropriate area. The truth of the matter is that regardless of how well skin is cared for, the aging process will diminish its youthful turgor including muscles, too - and cause the appearance to become sunken and narrowed. Facial fillers are helpful for achieving a more toned appearance and can buy you time. However, there may come a time to consider surgery, such as a facelift or eye lid surgery (bleph-a-ro-plasty). At this point, you should ask yourself, “What is the status of my appearance?” Be aware that facial fillers, neurotoxins, facelifts, and eye lid surgeries can complement one another. They all achieve different aspects for maintaining a toned, natural appearance by improving the angles of the face. Accordingly, when considering a practitioner to perform a procedure on your face, whether non-surgical or surgical, give that decision the importance it deserves. After all, you will “wear” the results. Also, think about this: Just because someone stresses how long or how much they have done something does not necessarily mean they have done it well. Axiom: Time and quantity do not equal quality. Think carefully about what is important to you. It is little wonder that Dean Kleto, MD, and Cynthia St. Germain, BA, BSN, RN, have gained widespread recognition for their patient care. Dr. Kleto brings excellent training from Duke University and Chattanooga’s Erlanger Hospital to the surgical arena as he performs a variety of enhancing procedures in his offices in Sevierville and Knoxville or at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge Hospital. Ms. St. Germain is recognized by product manufacturers as one of the most sought-after consultants nationally to train physicians and other registered nurses in injection procedures, techniques, and theory. Hers is a highly-developed, astute aesthetic eye that, coupled with her knowledge and skill, brings a naturallooking result when she works with her patients. Don’t know where to start? That’s alright, because Dr. Kleto and Ms. St. Germain will listen to you and help guide you to your best choices by answering your questions thoroughly and illustrating procedures and expected outcomes. Start by calling the office to make an appointment to plan part of your future!

Art Glass: Discover the Possibilities

I

T IS THE artistic

component of this art form, influenced by my grandmother early in my life and my trips abroad, that captured both my passion and my imagination for art glass. I truly enjoy working hand-in-hand with homeowners, businesses, and churches who wish to create something truly unique, helping them to express their very own artistic natures through glass art.

While there are a few limitations to how glass can be used, there are no limitations on what our combined imaginations or skills can accomplish. I can design stained glass, leaded glass, beveled glass, sand blasted glass, handpainted, and kiln-fired stained glass that can all be used in virtually unlimited numbers of ways, at home or at work. If you would like to discover just how glass can be creatively used throughout your entire home or business to create that one-of-akind, designer-inspired work of glass art that will truly amaze, I invite you to visit my studio Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 pm or to

The Princesses and ThePlastic Surgeon

RECENTLY A COLLEAGUE

of mine told me that he does not want his daughter growing up with the label of “princess” because he thinks it causes girls to develop a sense of entitlement and an obsession with the superficial. I disagreed. I view it as a term of endearment and told him that not only am I raising princesses, but I’m raising princesses who can change a tire, shoot a gun, and bait a fish hook. My response got a laugh, but also got me thinking: How do I raise two girls to have a healthy body image and be happy with who they are when I’m a Plastic Surgeon? Regardless of what I do day in and day out, Dr. 90210, a character created and perpetuated by the media, is the stereotype of the plastic surgeon. Unfortunately, my daughters will have to contend with that public perception of what their father does as they grow up and begin to define who they are. Is it hypocritical for me to tell my girls to be happy in their own skin and ignore the messages about being “skinny” and “sexy” that they are bombarded with when I am in the beauty business? How do I teach them to be selfassured and confident in themselves? How do I teach them to be unselfish young women? After some thought, these are the answers I came up with: » The girls need to know they’re loved unconditionally. » They need to develop a healthy lifestyle early. » They need to develop a generous heart. » They need to learn the value of hard work and a dollar. » In trying to teach these lessons, my actions need to speak louder than my words. Knowing they’re loved The girls need to know that I love them. I’m the first man in their life, and I will always hold a special place in their hearts. I am the barometer against which every other male that comes into their lives will be measured. They need to know that my love does not come with a fee. They need to know that I love them for who they are on the inside, and nothing can change that. The only way they will know that is by experiencing that – at home, every day. Developing a healthy lifestyle Our girls need to see that living a healthy lifestyle is more important than a dress size. So much of the media’s portrayal of exercise and 16

Those things, I hope, will pay off in that we will have healthy, active girls who don’t see eating well and daily exercise as a chore but as a normal way of life. Growing up with a generous heart We do not want our girls to be self-absorbed children, so we try our best to NOT model being self-absorbed parents. We try to model living a life of service and hope that by living the message we’re teaching, they will live it as well. We hope that they will learn that the needs of others come before their own and that they will understand that a life of service isn’t about their job but is about who they are as a person. Learning the value of work Starting now, while they’re young, we do our best to make sure our children know that the

material things they enjoy have come at the expense of hard work and sacrifice. For our oldest, we’ve started a chore chart, and the money she earns every week goes equally into three separate boxes marked spend, save, and give. We hope this will not only teach her the value of a dollar, but the importance of saving and giving. A word about cosmetic surgery I have no doubt that the cosmetic surgery discussion will happen in my house at some point. I have insights into the topic that few other fathers have and want to share those with anyone considering cosmetic surgery, my own daughters included. However, what they need to hear is the same message anyone considering cosmetic surgery needs to hear: Cosmetic surgery should not be an outward attempt to create inner beauty; surgery should only serve to enhance it. I don’t profess to have all the answers to my own questions – my wife and I are just doing all that we can to raise healthy girls with a strong sense of themselves and to equip them as best we can to deal with the pressures of the outside world. All that being said, they’ll always be my princesses.

Stinky Dog? Skunked? Oh No, Not a Skunk! THE SPRING MONTHS

are the time of the year when we begin getting lots of calls regarding “de-skunking” Fido. Skunks are nocturnal animals and are most apt to have an encounter with your dog after dark. Dogs with an investigative personality are more likely to experience a skunk’s unpleasant, super-pungent, and noxious odor. If threatened, skunks may first give a warning with a foot stomp, a hiss, and a tail raise. But if he feels his warning is not being heeded, he’ll use his “weapon” up to 15 feet away. Over time, skunk odor sets in and is harder to remove, so act quickly. DO NOT use water! Also, bathing in tomato juice, vinegar mixed with water, or vanilla extract is not your answer. Your best solution is one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide plus 1/4 cup baking soda (NOT washing soda, which can burn) and two teaspoons liquid dishwashing detergent mixed in a large, open container. (If your

dog is large, you’ll need to double or triple this recipe.) Use the solution immediately. Wearing rubber gloves, work the solution into your dog’s DRY coat. DO NOT get in the dog’s eyes or mouth. Let the solution sit for 8 to 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Repeat if necessary, and finish by bathing your dog with regular doggy shampoo. Bathing and rinsing the dog with regular shampoo is important to ensure the solution is not harmful to their skin and coats. If you have questions, give John, our Certified Groomer at Ms. C’s, a call. He’ll be happy to discuss your dog’s grooming needs with you.

HE PROMOTION of healthy

lifestyles has become the norm for many in today’s society. Weight loss resolutions for the New Year have many people going to gyms, drinking more water, and changing eating habits with the hopeful benefit of looking and feeling great. Although these benefits should motivate us to continue our path of resolution toward fulfillment, it is important to understand the benefits that go beyond weight loss. With a clear understanding of true health, reaching New Year’s weight loss targets can turn more into lifestyle changes that can endure for a lifetime. Inflammation is part of our immune response. James H. O’Keefe, MD, writing in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, said, “The highly processed, calorie-dense, nutrientdepleted diet favored in the current American culture frequently leads to exaggerated supraphysiological postprandial spikes in blood glucose and lipids… inducing immediate oxidant stress, which increases in direct proportion to the increases in glucose and triglycerides after a meal. The transient increase in free radicals acutely triggers atherogenic changes including inflammation.” Simply put, diets that are high in fats, highly processed, and nutrient depleted are causing after-meal spikes in triglycerides and glucose, which in turn causes plaque build up in our arteries, which leads to inflammation. Current studies suggest that inflammatory disorders are the underlying cause of most chronic diseases. According to Nutritional Management of Inflammatory Disorders, published by the Institute for Functional Medicine, inflammatory imbalances have been linked to cancer, cardiovascular disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, autoimmune diseases, pulmonary and neurological illnesses, and more. Our food choices directly affect inflammation. Foods that top the list to avoid are simple sugars. Creative names often used for simple sugars

include corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, golden syrup, maltose, sorghum syrup, and sucrose. Another food to avoid is fatty red meat, especially meat that has been raised in feedlots. Commercially produced meats are fed with grains like soy beans and corn, a diet that is high in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids but low in antiinflammatory omega-3 fats. Trans fats also contribute to inflammation. They are found in deep fried foods, fast foods, commercially baked goods, and those prepared with partially hydrogenated oil, margarine, and/or vegetable shortening. Other foods on the list include processed grains that are devoid of fiber and vitamin B complexes. The common ones are white rice, white flour, white bread, noodles, pasta, biscuits, and pastries. Watch out for dairy, processed meats, and over consumption of alcohol. Fortunately, there are foods that help curtail the inflammatory response. These include high-fiber carbohydrates with low glycemic index, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. If you are not vegetarian, then consume lean protein such as salmon, white fish, and grass-fed meats. Eat approximately one handful of nuts daily (using a closed fist) consumed with vegetables, grains, berries, or other fruits. Eat salads daily, consisting of leafy greens with vinegar and virgin olive oil dressing. Other suggestions include limiting portion sizes to modest quantities, maintaining normal weight and avoiding overweight or obesity. Your waist circumference should be less than one half of your height in inches. Lastly, physical activity for at least 30 minutes or more daily, of at least moderate intensity (with approval of your healthcare professional), will be helpful. New Year’s resolutions are often discarded by February, but if we transform them into lifestyle habits, we can expect lasting results. With understanding of how healthy food choices affect so many systems, we can maintain a healthy lifestyle for a lifetime.

When Will My Child Feel Better? IT’S THE QUESTION

every parent of a sick child wants answered: When will my child feel better? Unfortunately, the answers given by most doctors are generally a “best guess.” A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2013 has provided more specific answers to this important question, and the answers the authors found might surprise you. The study was done as an analysis of 23 different trials and 25 observational studies. The children studied were of varied ages, and different studies involved different treatments (placebo, over-the-counter medications, and controlled treatments). The authors analyzed all of the available data from these studies and found several interesting insights into the duration of symptoms resulting from certain infections in childhood. The most interesting finding is that in children with earaches and common colds, symptom duration is quite a bit longer than conventional wisdom and guidance has led us to believe. In this study, it was found that for an earache, half of children were pain-free in three days, but it took seven to eight days for 90% of children to be free

of symptoms. Fever, on average, lasted for three days. For the common cold, general symptoms last for at least 10 days for 50% of children. For children with a sore throat, one-third of children still have pain on the third day, and almost 75% will have fever for at least two days. The time it took for 90% of children studied to achieve symptom resolution was between two and seven days. In children with an acute cough, half were symptom-free at 10 days, but it took 25 days for 9 out of 10 children to be cough-free. You read that correctly – it took almost a month to get 9 out of 10 children free of their cough. Why is this important? Clearly respiratory tract infections in children last longer than parents expect them to last. This can lead to frustration with prescribed treatments, multiple calls to the physician’s office, and unnecessary additional testing following initial diagnosis and treatment prescriptions. As long as a child’s symptom duration falls within the average parameters stated, as a general rule, patience should prevail. Obviously, however, if symptoms change or worsen, or if a child’s symptoms

last significantly longer than the averages I noted, they should be taken back to their physician’s office so that a second evaluation can occur, since illnesses can change over time, misdiagnosis can occur, and secondary infections are possible. When in doubt, your physician is the best source of information about next steps in your child’s illness. Dr. Jason Collins, MD, is a Board Certified Family Practice Physician specializing in the complete care of patients of all ages. Dr. Collins is currently accepting new patients.

NIGHT TO SHINE PROM

n June, Tim Tebow will be speaking at the 10th Annual Benefit in Athens, Tennessee. This month his foundation will impact thousands of people across the United States. Several churches will be host sites for the 2016 nationwide Night to Shine prom for people with special needs. This amazing event will happen in different cities across the country and world simultaneously on Friday, February 12th. There will be five cities in Tennessee participating. Night to Shine is an unforgettable prom night experience centered on God’s love for people with special needs, ages 16 and older. The Tim Tebow Foundation will serve as the sponsor at each of these locations by providing detailed support. This is truly going to be a worldwide movement, as the churches that have been approved to host already represent 41 states across the nation and six countries around the world. With a red carpet entrance and friendly

paparazzi welcome, each Night to Shine guest is greeted by their very own buddy, who serves as their host for the evening. Guests receive VIP treatment, including corsages and boutonnieres, hair, makeup, shoe shines, professional photography, food, dancing, games, and more! The guests also participate in a crowning ceremony, where they each receive a crown or tiara. The overwhelmingly positive response to the inaugural Night to Shine prom in 2015 led the foundation to focus on the growth of this ministry. The 44 host churches in 2015 witnessed the beginning of this worldwide movement, as the event not only allowed the 7,000 honored guests to shine, but also the churches, the 15,000 volunteers, and, most importantly, Christ to shine through the emphasis on God’s love for people with special needs.

Y PASSION for a career in

medicine began early in life, and along with the steadfast encouragement of my greatest mentor – my father, an entrepreneur – I discovered that I could achieve anything in life by combining a strong work ethic and a dedication to my dreams. Sadly, my father passed away far too early, but he still took a great deal of pride in seeing his daughter become an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with a master’s degree in nursing along with becoming a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. It’s in my father’s memory that I started Gott Family Medical Clinic. Gott Family Medical Clinic is dedicated to helping every member of your family achieve their optimal health potential. He could have little imagined at that time that he would soon be launching a more than five decade long career in the diamond and fine jewelry business. Since 1961, Vince has been a student of both the quality diamond and fine jewelry industry, and he has put this experience to work in some rather unique ways. “I’ve been fortunate in my career to have met many of the leaders in the world diamond marketplace and to have been privileged to work with many of the nation’s premier jewelers,” says Vince. “I’ve loved every minute of this fascinating and fast-paced industry, and the thought of retiring has never occurred to me.” Vince and his wife of 50 years, having relocated to the Knoxville area, opened an office in the Farragut area in addition to an office in St. Louis. Called Vincent’s, Vince and company purchases diamonds of all shapes and sizes, as well as fine jewelry, sapphires, and rubies, from both individuals and estates. “In addition to purchasing diamonds and fine jewelry at the highest possible prices, we also offer sellers a totally unique selling experience,” says Vince. Vincent’s meets with each client on an appointment only basis in their Farragut office, offering a secure, private, and safe environment. SARA CREWE:

A LITTLE PRINCESS February 4-7 Knoxville Children’s Theatre

K

noxville Children’s Theatre presents Sara Crewe: A Little Princess, based on the heartwarming, rags-to-riches children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The play is performed by 11 talented young actors from ages 8 to 14 and will be performed February 4 and 5 at 7 pm, February 6 at 1 and 5 pm, and February 7 at 3 pm. Captain Crewe leaves his young daughter Sara at a school for girls while he goes abroad to claim his fortune in jewels. The school is run by a strict head-mistress named Miss Minchin, who takes special care of her wealthy new student, until a stunning twist of fate changes the destiny of everyone in the school and throughout the neighborhood. Frances Hodgson Burnett’s story remains one of the world’s most popular books for children, despite being written more than 100 years ago. It is a timeless tale of rags-to-riches, and Sara

HO DOESN’T have a spot here

or there that could use some work? Even those who eat right and workout regularly sometimes wish they could just shave an inch or two from a particular area. Spa 9700 is excited to offer our clients an affordable, comfortable way to lose inches using the Body Light Te c h n o l o g y. The Body Light machine uses BEFORE lipid peroxidation technology, which uses an LED system to penetrate 10-12mm into your layer of fat. The treatment is a safe, 15-minute process. Light stimuAFTER lation opens pores in the fat cells which release their fatty acids into the space between cell membranes. This opening allows the triglycerides to escape and the fat cells to empty and shrink. These fatty acids are then transported to the circulatory system and metabolized by muscle movement during exercise. This quick and easy fat loss procedure provides predictable spot reduction with no pain, no weight loss drugs, and no invasive surgery! The entire treatment takes about 30 minutes. You will be able to treat the exact area of your concern. The average client loses 2” in 6–9 visits (2-3 visits per week). After treatment, resume a healthy diet and exercise plan, and you will be able to maintain your loss indefinitely. Spa 9700 is offering one treatment for $79, three treatments for $189, or six treatments for $329. Call 865-357-7721 to schedule your appointment.

Top IRA & 401(k) Mistakes That Can Rob Your Heirs

W

E C A N A L L L E A R N from

other’s mistakes. And in the world of complicated IRA taxation, it’s not hard to make one. Know that IRAs and 401(k)s are fully taxable to your heirs. And while a well-laid plan lets your heirs pay that tax a little at a time, a poorly designed plan could end up costing them 40% of their inheritance in taxes. Which would you prefer? Here are the most common mistakes I see in my practice: » Not naming primary AND contingent beneficiaries on your IRAs. This robs your estate of important distribution options that could save tens of thousands in income taxes. As a side benefit, proper beneficiary designations keep the IRA funds from being used to settle your final debts. » No t h av i n g u p d a t e d b e n e f i c i a r y information. It’s important to think of your beneficiary designations as the “will” for your IRA. For example, if you forget and leave your ex-spouse as primary beneficiary, but update your will to leave everything to your kids, guess who gets the IRA? » Not communicating with your intended heirs. So you’ve done your homework and have a well-executed financial and estate plan in place. But at your passing, your unsuspecting children learn they’ve inherited an IRA so they have the IRA added to their own IRA. WRONG! They’ve just triggered tax on the entire distribution. Don’t assume your adult children or spouse understand inherited IRA tax rules – leave a note with your will telling them to talk to a qualified tax advisor before they do anything. Other common mistakes I see: » Naming a trust as an IRA beneficiary – a really bad tax answer 99% of the time » Your heirs missing the year-of-death required distribution, resulting in a 50% penalty » Not knowing there are different options available for a spouse inheriting an IRA versus a non-spouse » Not knowing that inherited Roth IRAs have Required Minimum Distribution rules And the list goes on. Bring a friend and join me at our next Lunch ‘n Learn, where we will look at more IRA mistakes to avoid, plus take a deeper dive into inherited IRA rules. You can learn simple steps to take now that will help your heirs in the future. Or call today to set up your complimentary one-hour consultation with me, where we can review your unique tax situation together.

AIR RETURN vents are in all our homes;

however, little is done to hide these necessary items. Those white vents aren’t things of beauty. You can’t cover them up or bury them behind furniture. Many homeowners resign themselves to the fact that they’ll just have to live with those eyesores. Wel l, t here’s a bet ter way w it h Fancy Vents, who manufactures cast iron and steel cold Before After air return vents. Cindy Moore co-founded the business with her late husband, Earl, a skilled metal artisan. He created the first “Fancy Vent” for their home in his basement shop. The decorative iron return air grill quickly became a popular conversation piece for visitors, and some suggested they sell the pieces. So, Cindy created flyers and placed them on mailboxes near her home. They began discussing the possibility of a real business opportunity when at least three months of orders poured in. By mid-2008, Fancy Vents, Inc. was born. With more than 100 designs, there is a Fancy Vent to fit any décor. Choose from traditional designs such as the “Glory” or the “Gothic” or select a more contemporary design such as the “Valenti” or the “Modern.” Also, all of the vent covers are available in six finishes and almost any size. “We’ve created vents in standard and odd sizes,” said Cindy. “You can choose from existing designs, and we also build themed designs such as beach scenes for homes in Florida, Western themes for homes in Montana, and the Texas star for homes in Texas. If we can cast it, we can make it.” It’s not just the quality workmanship that makes Fancy Vents shine. Their commitment and dedication to a high level of customer service from the design phase and beyond installation sets them apart. Keeping things personal and “made to order” is part of their business model. The best part is the vents’ functionality. The vents are easy to clean, and you can open them with one finger so you don’t break your fingernails. All designs have been tested to ensure functionality and that they meet or exceed HVAC airflow specifications. It seems that something that adds so much character to a home would be hard to install, but almost anyone can complete a DIY installation by watching the “15-Minute Remodel” video at www. fancyvents.com.

2016 Big Ears Festival Continues to Expand with Powerful Sound Installations DECLARED ONE of The Guardian’s

“Critics Picks” for 2016 – calling Big Ears “America’s most thrillingly diverse festival” – the Big Ears Festival continues to expand its stunning array of offerings with the announcement of two extraordinary sound installations for attendees to experience during the festival. 2014 Pulitzer Prize winning composer John Luther Adams’ Veils and Vesper, a series of distinct but related electronic pieces written by Adams in 2005, are extraordinarily beaut i f u l work s mea nt t o be hea rd successively or concurrently. When installed together, the listener is able to create their own “mix” by moving through the space, basking in the harmonic colors of each individual piece, or to taking in the more oceanic experience of the infinite whole. Slowly unfolding and spanning six hours in total, Veils and Vesper creates an immersive environment, which the listener can enjoy for however long they might choose. Set in the Sanctuary of the former First Christian Church of Knoxville, 38

this space will once again be transformed into a place of contemplation and meditation: An oasis in the middle of the city and in the midst of the ebb and flow of the Big Ears Festival itself. The installation will run for its six-hour duration once each day – Thursday through Sunday – during Big Ears, complemented by handful of select musical performances in the space, details of which will be announced later. In addition to the installation of Veils and Vesper, John Luther Adams – who is composer-in-residence at the 2016 Big Ears Festiva l – will have other works performed during the festival weekend, including his extraordinary orchestral piece, Become Ocean. More details about other performances of Adams’ work will be announced soon. In a separate space at Big Ears, audiences will have the remarkable opportunity to explore the visceral, emotional, and spiritual experience of Lou Reed’s DRONES. Designed by Lou Reed and originating from

six of his electric guitars and amplifiers – and operated by Reed’s long-serving guitar tech, Stuart Hurwood – Big Ears festival-goers will experience DRONES as both sound installation – lasting 3-5 hours or more – as well as a performance piece, with Laurie Anderson curating a program of musicians performing live with the DRONES. The a nnouncement of t hese t wo installations continues to build upon the extraordinary programming offered by the 2016 Big Ears Festival. More news – including additional artists’ performances, an expanded film program, panels, discussions, surprise shows, and more – will continue to be announced in the coming weeks. Weekend passes, individual day passes, and reserved seat tickets for Tennessee Theatre performances are all on sale now. VIP weekend passes are sold out. February in the Garden H O W I S YO U R WINTER GOING?

It has certainly followed the predictions of being warmer and wetter than last year! It was so warm in December and early January that some of our plants thought it was spring, so first let’s talk about what that unseasonable warmth may have done to your plants. In my yard, I had Lenten Roses in full bloom, bulbs 4” high, and even a few blooms on my forsythia and candytuft. So what can we do to “fix” these confused plants? The short answer is nothing. Mother Nature must take her course, and we will just have to wait and see what the outcome is. I suspect that most things will be fine, although our spring may not have quite as many blooms as normal. Damage will also depend on how far out of dormancy the plants came. I expect my daffodils to have short, stunted bloom stems. The forsythia and candytuft will have fewer blooms than normal. The Lenten Roses are already fully bloomed, so I’m just

enjoying their color and protecting them with a little extra pine straw. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the buds on the blasted hydrangeas didn’t start to swell or they won’t bloom AGAIN. (This will be three years of nakedness.) Whether we’re dealing with plants or people, flexibility is the key to happiness! February is not a great month for gardening, because it’s usually either cold or raining. There are always some pretty days, however, so here are some things you can do outside to hold off the spring fever. » The biggie for February is pruning. This is the time to prune summer flowering shrubs such as roses, butterfly bush, hydrangea (paniculata and Arborescens ONLY), and rose of Sharon. Please call if you have questions! Do not prune spring bloomers or they will be non-bloomers, and don’t prune other hydrangeas unless you’re really fond of big green bushes with no flowers. This is also the time to cut back deciduous vines such as honeysuckle and

trumpet creeper. If you have clematis, please research your variety before you start cutting. Some should not be pruned now. » If you have fruit trees and vines, it’s time to prune them also. If you need instructions, UT Extension service has some great handouts that you can download and print out. Visit www. extension.tennessee.edu and click on the “publications” link. » This is a great time to inspect your shrubs for invaders, because you can see more of the base. Privet, wild grapevines, and wild honeysuckle vines like to hide themselves amongst the branches to avoid detection. Prune them out before they start growing. Paint the stalk of privet with Roundup to keep this invasive, aggressive plant from coming back. Yes, you need to avoid the stalk of the “good” plant, which is why I said paint and not spray. » If you have deciduous trees and shrubs that need to be relocated, February is also a good time to do a plant moving day. It’s less disruptive to move them when they are asleep. Have your planting hole ready, and dig as big of a root ball as you can handle. » Add mulch to perennial beds or naked soil to help keep soil temperature and moisture stable. If you aren’t up to a full mulch job, get a couple of bales of pine straw and spread them around. One bale will cover about 50 square feet. » There are things that you can plant now. If you need a pop of color, plant pansies or violas. Start seeds for perennial herbs or slow growing annuals such as petunias. If you have a coldframe, you can start vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. You can even direct seed lettuce, peas, radishes, and onions! » If you aren’t ready to plant yet, get planting beds ready. Pull out weeds, and put down a pre-emergent such as Preen to keep weed seeds from germinating. *NOTE: Don’t plant flower or vegetable seeds after you have put down a preemergent! Preen doesn’t know the difference between a flower and a weed! » Add compost, manure, or topsoil to the beds and work it in. » Don’t forget about the birds. Keep feeders cleaned and filled with a good quality seed. If you have a year-round birdbath, keep it clean and full also. Birdbath heaters are a good idea if our winter decides to turn really cold. That’s all for this month. Next month I will get to start talking about all the things you need to do for spring. I can’t wait!

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

‘FLAME’ WILLOW MOST PEOPLE recognize a

weeping willow, but would it surprise you that there are at least 400 willow species with many different growth habits? There are tree willows, shrub willows, and even groundcover willows. Many have aesthetic features making them valuable landscape plants. While I appreciate the graceful and pendulous form of the weeping willow, a fairly new plant to me, and one which I just have to tell others about, is ‘Flame’ willow (Salix x ‘Flame’). Flame willow features vibrant orangered stems that are especially showy in the winter months. As a deciduous plant, Flame willow has no foliage in the winter, bringing even greater attention to its glowing stems. This shrub-type willow can grow to be about 20 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 15 feet. If this is too big for your landscape, rejuvenation pruning (cutting a plant to the ground) every year or so is an advisable way to manage this plant. Such pruning forces new stems to grow, which not only keeps growth in check but also produces stems that have much more vibrant orangered color than old-growth stems. Flame willow grows at a fast rate, up to eight feet in one growing season. It has an oval, dense form with bright green narrow lance-shaped foliage during the growing season turning variable shades of yellow before dropping in late fall. The ideal time to prune this willow is late winter to early spring. This hybrid willow shrub performs best when grown in full-sun. The coloration of the stems will not be as bright when grown Photo by S. Hamilton, courtesy UTIA

in partial sunlight. It is an amazingly adaptable plant, tolerating both dry conditions and even some standing water. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, so it could be used in a moisture-conserving landscape. It is a forgiving plant in that it is not particular as to soil type or pH. For landscape use, be sure to site this shrub where everyone is treated to its orange-red glowing stems in the winter, including a view from inside your home looking out your own windows. I’ve seen this shrub used as an effective backdrop or privacy screen. Used alone, it makes a striking focal plant in the winter landscape. The relatively fine foliage texture of Flame willow sets it apart from other landscape plants with less refined foliage. It’s also a desirable shrub for providing protection and cover for birds

and other wildlife. Many butterflies sip the nectar from the white, inconspicuous flowers and use the leaves for their larvae. The winter branches are ideal for cutting and using in a decorative vase for indoor interest as well as for mixing in winter evergreen arrangements. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu. Februar y 2016 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Real Estate Video is a Powerful Marketing Tool for Homes

T

HERE ARE MANY WAYS real

estate agents advertise homes. You’ve got print, online, direct mail, social media, and more, but there’s one tool that truly captures the essence of a home, making it stand out among the rest: Video. Video is 50 times more likely than a text page on the same topic to appear on the first page of Google search results. Real estate listings with a video receive four times more inquiries than those without. According to the Online Publishers Association, 80% of viewers remember what they’ve seen in online videos. Video ranks higher, increases leads, and makes your home more memorable. Every home for sale online has photos, and many even have a photo slideshow. Home shoppers are bored with slideshows and the corny music that normally accompanies them. Video with a professional voiceover showcases your home in all its glory as if the person is taking a tour in person. Wouldn’t you like your home to be uniquely displayed online with a professionally narrated video versus only photos or a picture slideshow with bad music? A local company, homesandVIDEOS.com, has been helping top real estate agents with affordable video marketing since 2006. They take care of everything, from writing the script, to editing, to posting the HD video online to YouTube, Facebook, WellcomeMat, HomesAndLand.com, and others. If you’re selling your home, be sure to have your real estate agent contact Russell Haskins at homesandVIDEOS.com to find out more. Your home deserves to be in HD! About homesandVIDEOS.com homesandVIDEOS.com is a service of 23 Creations. 23 Creations is a video production company owned by Russell Haskins. They specialize in affordable, quality video production services for small businesses in East Tennessee.

construction is a great option for many people, but have you ever thought about a custom home instead of a cookie cutter house? I know, the word CUSTOM always sounds expensive. However, building a custom home isn’t necessarily more expensive, and your return on investment can be significantly higher. Building a custom home means more than choosing a floor plan from stock designs, selecting wall paint and paper, and picking out the bathroom fixtures. Truly custom homes are designed from the foundation up to meet your exact needs rather than what someone else expects you to want. Working with a custom home designer enables you to not only have your home laid out and look the way you want, but also have the functionality you need for your home office, your kitchen, and even your garage area. Jenny Blalock, designer/licensed contractor with Luxe Homes & Design, takes your designs from foundation to furniture and transforms your lifestyle needs into the home of your dreams. She can help you assess your family’s lifestyle and your living preferences. At Luxe Homes & Design, Jenny and her team will help eliminate the stress from your home design and building experience. Because there are hundreds of details that go into each home design, Luxe Homes & Design will help you successfully navigate the design/ build process that meets your current and future needs and lifestyle, whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or seasoned professional. Simply because a company can build a house doesn’t make them a good choice as a custom home builder. With so many special options, unique designs, and custom concepts, selecting a home builder that understands how all of those elements combine into your dream home design will likely be the most important choice you make. With Luxe Homes & Design, no detail is overlooked, and everything is designed around Photos by Beth Fellhoelter

your lifestyle and budget. Cookie cutter houses means having to pick from their cookie jar. Don’t settle for choosing plans and cosmetic designs that may limit you. By having a one-of-a-kind home, not only will you have the enjoyment of having exactly what you want, but when it

comes time to sell, homebuyers won’t have to settle for a cookie cutter lifestyle either. For a free, no obligation consultation for your new home, contact Jenny Blalock at 865-755-4680 or visit www. luxehomesdesign.com. Tired of Wire?

Custom Storage Replaces Inefficient Wire Shelving

HAS THIS

ever happened to you? You are getting something out of your wire system closet and suddenly your clothes collapse in a tangled heap on the ground. Or all the items in your old wire pantry crash to the floor in the middle of the night. A new house or an old one, many homeowners face a common problem: A premade wire closet system. Wire is inexpensive, but in the end, is cheaper always better? While wire is certainly adequate and easy to install yourself, the non-adjustable hanging and shelving doesn’t utilize all the storage space available. Additionally, there’s a probability of an untimely failure. “We often receive calls from homeowners asking for a custom design after their wire pantry collapses or they come home to find all their clothes dumped on the floor,” said Kathryn Norton, designer and co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “There can be inherent structure problems with wiring since the anchoring system is not sufficient to support hundreds of pounds of clothes or pantry food.” A custom closet is not only more durable, it also: » Maximizes storage – A custom design adds 30-40% more storage space than wire or do-ityourself kits. » Fits any budget – A custom closet doesn’t mean expensive. A simple design will still maximize storage space. An experienced designer can help meet almost any budget. » Offers adjustability – As your needs change, shelves and rods can be adjusted, converting shelves to hanging and vice versa, with no damage to the system or sheetrock. For kids’ closets and pantries, adjustability is a must. » Provides better organization – There’s a place for everything, and everything has a place. No more emotional stress over feeling disorganized. » Increases home value – Whether moving in a few years or not, professionally designed closets are high on the list of features homebuyers want. The amount of square footage a home has doesn’t matter as much as how well the space inside is used. Whether classic white or a wood-grain finish, the difference is dramatic. Once you have a custom closet, pantry, or laundry room, you will never want wire again!

INTER IS N OW in full swing.

The sun is lower on the horizon, and the temperatures have dropped. Most outdoor activities have moved indoors, warm weather wardrobes have been put away, and our furnaces are replacing the warm air that Mother Nature was providing free of charge just a few short months ago. But is that sunshine that you welcome into your home on these cold winter days really as welcomed as you might think? Because the winter’s UV rays from the sun can damage your home’s furniture, draperies, carpets, and wood floors, it’s prudent to protect your home’s interior, not to mention eliminating that annoying and blinding glare from the sun coming through your windows and glass doors, reflecting off a nearby lake, pool, or patio. Like sunglasses for your windows, Retractable Sunshades from Screens of East Tennessee can enhance your view of the out-of-doors by filtering the sun while reducing annoying and unwanted glare. Exterior mounted Retractable Sunshades provide a clean look from inside your home without affecting your interior window treatments and operate with your windows whether they are opened or closed. You can maintain your view in the living room and kitchen or opt for a complete “black out” effect in a media room. A variety of fabric types and styles can filter as much or as little light as you desire, and we offer a wide selection of options to match or complement your home’s décor and color scheme. Unlike permanent shade products, Retractable Sunshades are there when you need them and retracted out of sight when you don’t. Usually operated by wireless remote control, motorized shades can be raised and lowered simply and easily to suit your individual needs. They also have the added feature of being operated automatically by an adjustable sun sensor or can be incorporated into many home automation control systems. Many homeowners already use Retractable Sunshades to prevent passive heat gain in the summer months by preventing the sun’s rays from reaching windows, doors, and patios, and they are a great way to keep your home cooler and more comfortable while reducing energy costs. Retractable Sunshades also offer UV protection, which can protect your home’s interior and furnishings. Whether preventing the glaring winter sun or protecting your home from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, now is a great time to call Screens of East Tennessee to receive your no-cost, no-obligation consultation and estimate for Retractable Sunshades for your home.

shapes and sizes, but there are two distinct types… good and bad. While good surprises can leave you feeling warm and fuzzy for years, bad surprises can wreak all kinds of havoc and inconvenience to your life. What’s the best surprise you ever received? I can think of a few that still evoke warm memories and a smile. Several years ago, my husband called to tell me to shower and change quickly. “Wear something nice but comfortable,” he said “Don’t worry about the kids; a sitter is on her way.” A limo driver whisked me away to a spa where I was pampered with a facial and a most needed body massage! Later that evening, the same driver shuttled me and several other ladies to a secret dinner where our husbands sang love songs quartet style and prepared a five-course meal for us to enjoy. Dinner and a movie? Absolutely. But, don’t stop there. As a woman, I know we all love to feel special. We need those occasional “over the top” surprises that spice up our marriage and make us feel cherished. Each February we get numerous requests for surprise cleanings. Valentine’s Day Weekend with Erick Baker February 12 & 13 • 8 pm | Bijou Theatre

I

F YOU HAD told me when I gradu-

ated from the University of Tennessee in the summer of 2001 that I would end up making a living as a singer-songwriter and a television show host, I wouldn’t have believed you. My degree was in public relations; I didn’t have a background in music, unless you count singing in the congregation on Sundays. Amazingly though, as it turns out, you would’ve been right. I didn’t grow up singing or playing music. I’ve never had voice lessons, and I taught myself how to play guitar. With my music, I’ve always relied on passion instead of skill. My performing career began on an apartment balcony in South Knoxville, playing for friends and random people passing by, which soon led to playing cover shows at local bars and restaurants. I was 23 when I wrote my first song in the summer of 2002. The first time I seriously considered pursuing a career in music was on May 9, 2007, after opening up for John Legend at the Tennessee Theatre. At the time, I was in graduate school working on a master’s degree in English. A local promoter heard me perform at a songwriter showcase a few weeks earlier and offered me the gig. I went from performing in a noisy bar for 15 people who could care less to a sold-out theatre of 1,500 who intently listened to every word I sang. The guy that walked on stage that night wasn’t the same guy that walked off. One set, six songs in just 30 minutes, changed my life forever. Music has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. It’s taken me to parts of the world I would’ve never seen and connected me with people I would’ve never met. It’s given my life purpose. Without music, I may have never met the two greatest loves of my life: My wife, Mandy, and my daughter, Annabelle Rose. My songs belong to every right turn and wrong turn that has led me here. They reflect the pieces of poetry hidden in the experiences that lie within each of our everyday lives. Currently, along with continuing my career

in music, I’m pursuing a new adventure, one that’s led me back home. I’m proud to say I’ve lived in Tennessee my entire life. However, touring out on the road with my music for the last decade, I’ve only seen it passing by through a windshield. Finally, after all that time away, Tennessee is calling me back where I belong. As the host of the new PBS outdoor television show Tennessee Uncharted, I’m getting the opportunity to rediscover how great my home state is, one adventure at a time. Our lives are full of uncharted places, and this show is all

about getting out and exploring them, because you never know where they may lead you. There is always something new to be learned or gained, and every day I uncover a little more about myself. I am so grateful for what I’ve been able to do with just my voice, my words, and a wood box with strings. Surprisingly, music has given me so much in my life. It’s allowed me to see the world and, along the way, find the beauty and blessing of home. For more information, visit www.knoxbijou. com.

Classic Productions Presents

Seusical the Musical March 3 • 9:45 am Knoxville Civic Auditorium

“O

h, the thinks you can think” when Dr. Seuss’s bestloved stories collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper! Adapted from the Broadway version, this adaptation especially for young audiences features 12 actors and enhanced production values. Seussical is Theatreworks USA’s biggest show ever! The Cat in the Hat is the host and emcee (and all-around mischief-maker) in this romp through the Seuss classics. When the sweet, good-natured elephant Horton hears a small cry for help coming from a small speck of dust, he promises to rescue and guard it because “a person’s a person, no matter how small.” On that small speck of dust lives JoJo, an imaginative young Who. JoJo has astounding “thinks,” in which anything’s

possible, but his parents believe this creativity is inappropriate for the son of the Mayor of Who-Ville. Meanwhile, the one-feathered bird, Miss Gertrude McFuzz, desperately wants Horton to notice her. Maybe, she thinks, she just needs a more impressive tail. At the same time, the amazingly lazy Mayzie La Bird connives, cajoles, and convinces Horton to sit on her egg while she goes off on a spree. Will the planet of Who survive? Will Horton pay attention to Gertrude? Will Maysie ever return for her egg? Dr. Seuss’s beloved classic characters find themselves intertwined in an incredible crazy-quilt adventure in which the power of imagination and the most miraculous “think” ever saves the day! Got the Blues About the Grays? A RE YOU FEELING

like you are not on the gray train? Everyone else has started going with a gray palette, but you are not sure how you feel about it. Going white has always been a popular choice for kitchen cabinetry and proved to be the color choice of the year in 2015. In 2016, there will be so ma ny new color options to put a unique spin on your kitchen, and one of the front runners is gray! Gray is a great transition color from 2015 to 2016 and is proving to be an incredible and timeless choice for cabinetry. In 2015, the popular color palette was very neutral and continuing with that same concept. 2016 has taken one of those popular colors, the gray or greige, and made some fantastic cabinet options. You may be asking yourself, will the gray cabinet trend last? Is it timeless? The answer is yes, and I will tell you why. Like the white cabinet, grays play nice with almost any other color or wood stain. The

wonderful thing about the color gray is that it can command a space and be a very unique design element or it can serve more as a backdrop to other unique elements in your home. The lighter shades of gray will give your home a bright and open appearance, whereas the darker shades are elegant and rich. Whether your style is craftsman, transitional, or contemporary, the gray cabinetry will look inviting and add a sleek edge to your

dĂŠcor. When painted on a cabinet, gray shows how much of a chameleon it can be: It looks great on a raised panel, shaker style, slab front, really any door style. Above all, gray is an outsidethe-box color; it pushes your home design to the next level and will impress any guests. White is a classic color, but gray has that wow factor while still being neutral. Grays in the past have come off cold and sterile, but the new grays of 2016 have a very warm and inviting tone that make them a great pop of color for any home. KNOXVILLE ZOO SETS NEW ATTENDANCE RECORD IN 2015

K

noxville Zoo welcomed 440,115 visitors in 2015, the highest annual attendance in the zoo’s 67-year history and a new record. While more than 205,000 zoo-goers came from Knoxville and the surrounding counties, slightly more than half of all visitors (53%) were tourists whose impact to the local economy amounted to more than $27 million. The zoo also saw an increase in the percentage of local visitors compared to 2014. Knoxville Zoo President and CEO Lisa New attributes the surge in attendance primarily to the popularity of the zoo’s two baby Western lowland gorillas, who were born in the spring of 2015. “The Knoxville community has a strong history of celebrating our successes, and there was a lot of interest in the first gorillas

ever born in Knoxville and the first in the state in 30 years,” said Lisa. “We’ve also made it our top priority to enhance our guests’ experience, which we have done through interactions with our staff and animals and ongoing beautification throughout the zoo.” Knoxville Zoo is Knoxville’s largest yearround attraction. Located off exit 392 from Interstate 40, the zoo is open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Knoxville Zoo is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education. Currently the zoo is open daily from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes. For more information, call 865-637-5331 ext. 300 or visit www.knoxvillezoo.org.

can deliver perfection, at Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we deliver the next best thing – excellence. That’s been our company’s motto for more than a quarter of a century. We’ve invested in the training, education, and state-of-the-art technology and equipment, including many proprietary systems, to deliver a level of excellence that you might have thought no longer existed, whether we are cleaning your home’s carpeting or your valuable Oriental rugs. So how is it that we can make this statement? That’s because of my personal commitment to either perform or supervise 100% of all work performed by Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning. It’s also our unparalleled attention to every detail involved in cleaning your home’s rugs and carpeting. For example, did you know that Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning only uses purified water when cleaning your rugs and carpeting? Why is this important you might ask? Untreated water contains impurities, including trace chemicals, minerals, and chlorine, that can reduce the effectiveness of cleaning agents and remain behind as residue in your carpeting. This accumulation of impurities in your home’s rugs and carpeting prevent them from being as clean as they can be, which can result in a dull appearance on your carpeting and can actually shorten the life expectancy of rugs and carpets. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, all of our vehicles are equipped with water purification systems, and our proprietary Oriental and area rug washing boutique utilizes a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis system that delivers the purest water possible. After all, clean rugs and carpeting begin with clean water. To experience the difference yourself, we are offering a special Valentine’s discount of 15% off as an added incentive to help you discover what thousands of other satisfied East Tennessee homeowners and business owners already know – Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning delivers excellence. John Mayall

If all I wrote was, “John Mayall is a blues institution,” I would’ve said plenty, and it would start a conversation that would last hours.

I

F ALL I WROTE was, “John Mayall is

a blues institution,” I would’ve said plenty, and it would start a conversation that would last hours. The legendary blues man is, of course, the founder of the UK’s John Mayall and the Blues Breakers. That band, founded in the 1960s, had a stellar group of musicians who went on to become blues and rock greats in their own right – names like Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor, John McVie, Walter Trout, Harvey Mandel, Coco Montoya, and many others. Even more astonishing is that the 81-yearold icon is still recording and touring around the world. In fact, he has just released his 62nd album entitled “Find a Way to Care.” I contacted Mayall at his California home. Cordial and still quite British, I started out by asking him if this disc was, in fact, his 62nd album. “Yes, it does sound about right,” he said. “The thing is, those are all the original albums, and then there are countless others which are compilations and repackagings and things like that. Those are ones I can never keep track of, but the important thing is to stick with the originals.” When I asked how “Find a Way to Care” was different to record from the other 61 albums, with his very proper British accent, he replied quite philosophically. “It’s all the passage of time and experience, you know? If you’re talking about stuff from the ’60s, obviously there was a lot of

Entertainment

immaturity in some respect, and there was also an innocence about it and strength to it in that respect. I think the passage of time, the more you play, and the more years that add up, I guess you just keep on going.” Sometimes it can take months to get an album in the can. When I asked Mayall how long his latest offering took to record, his answer was a head-spinner. “Well, the band came in for three days,” he said. “Two of them live in Chicago, and one of them lives in Fort Worth. They came in for three days, and I did some overdubs on the fourth day. The following week we did the mixing.” When I expressed my amazement about how fast the album was completed, the blues icon said: “Yeah, I mean, we’ve been together for five years, and everything’s first take. We know what we’re doing. I’ve always believed that the first or second take of anything is where you get the freshness and the spirit captured. We all know each other. We can mind read and all that. It’s really spectacular!” I have twice interviewed one of John’s former band mates, Walter Trout, who recently has had an amazing recovery from a liver transplant. “Walter’s a pretty amazing character,” said Mayall. “First of all, he’s survived death. That’s a bit of a remarkable thing, you know. His operation was successful. He’s back strong, and he’s back in business again. I saw him fairly recently. I sat in with him. It was

just like old times. As a composer and musician, he’s always coming up with new stuff. I haven’t heard his new album yet. It’s yet to be released. It’s somewhat biographical and about all that he’s been through. He’s a very creative person with whatever he does.” As for what’s next for the blues legend? “That’s pretty much it,” he said. “It’s quite a big chunk of the year that we’ve got coming up on the road. The album is just out. The dates are already filling up for next year, which is great. There’s also going to be a volume two of the live stuff from 1967 with Peter Green, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood. So volume two of that will be coming out this year. Apart from that, that’s all I’ve got going at the moment. I think it’s quite enough. More than most people.” As our chat was wrapping up, I asked Mayall, “When you go to that great blues gig in the sky, how do you want to be remembered, and what do you hope your legacy will be?” He answered without hesitation or timidity. “Well, I hope that people appreciate all the music that I’ve done, because I’m quite confident that I don’t sound like anyone else,” he said. “There’s a wealth of stuff in the music of mine for people to dig into. I think there’s quite enough going on there already. If I die tomorrow, there’s quite a lot for people to deal with.” Mayall will be performing at the Bijou Theatre on March 10th, and it is sure to be a memorable night. PLACES – The Preservation Toolbox for East Tennessee

Norris Dam

H

ISTORIC PRESERVATION is

important. There are proven benefits to property owners, neighborhoods, and entire cities. It has proven to be an essential tool for creating places with a high quality of life, stable property values, and tourism appeal. Knox Heritage and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance would like for every person in our 16 county region to understand the true, measurable value of historic preservation and how to access resources available to assist them with planning and executing the best strategies. That’s why we are creating the “PLACES” Preservation Toolbox, which will focus on the tools, strategies, and partners needed for fully optimizing a historic preservation approach. PLACES is an acronym that represents the six key components necessary to achieve success with historic preservation: Partnerships, Leadership, Advocacy, Collaboration, Education, and Strategies. The PLACES Preservation Toolbox was launched during the 2015 East Tennessee Preservation Conference in Knoxville. Donovan Rypkema’s (Place Economics) conference keynote on historic preservation and its impact on economic development and quality of life provided valuable insights and data on the importance of historic preservation in community development. In November, Tom Mayes (National Trust) spoke at the Knox Heritage Preservation Awards and Annual Meeting about why preservation matters based on basic human needs for beauty, identity, community, and sustainability (among many others). Together, these two national leaders in the preservation movement provide strong arguments for emphasizing preservation as a key tool for positive growth. In addition to raising awareness through the Rypkema and Mayes presentations, PLACES will grow and move forward in two important ways. One component will be an online toolbox that will be the go-to resource center for historic preservation issues in East Tennessee. The online toolbox will focus on four types of “end users”: 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2016

Government (elected or appointed officials or those who work in government), developers (and real estate professionals), homeowners (those who own or care for a historic home or farm), and organizers (anyone part of, or Tom Mayes interested in forming, a neighborhood or community group). The other component will be a series of community meetings to be held in each of the 16 counties of Middle East Tennessee during 2016. These meetings will be designed to spread the word about toolbox resources, as well as to better assess preservation needs within the region. There will also be a special presentation during the April 28th Plain Talk Conference presented by East Tennessee Quality Growth. The PLACES preservation toolbox project is made possible in part through support from the Richard and Julia Moe Family Fund. Follow the development of the toolbox at http://knoxheritage.org/etpa/toolbox. On the website, there is an online form that lets anyone share their community’s preservation success stories or challenges. Working together as a region, East Tennessee can become a leader in the preservation movement and secure the future for important heritage assets and a high quality of life.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

SkyMart

Preservation at Work in East Tennessee On January 7, the Tennessee Historical Commission approved new sites in East Tennessee for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. While the National Park Service review still remains, this represents significant progress for these nominations. Downtown Morristown is among the nominees and is notable for both its early 20th century architecture and mid20th century urban renewal which resulted in the SkyMart second-level sidewalk network that spans several blocks. The SkyMart is a distinctive feature that is unique in the world. The “sidewalks in the sky” have fascinated visitors for decades and have been a part of that downtown for a half century. Another nominee is the Norris Dam Hydroelectric Project in Anderson and Campbell counties. Construction of Norris Dam began in 1933, just a few months after the creation of TVA, and was completed in 1936. It was named for Senator George Norris of Nebraska, author of the legislation that created TVA. The town of Norris was built to house construction workers on the dam. It was a planned community that became a model for others throughout the nation. The town was sold to private owners in 1948. A listing in the National Register of Historic Places provides recognition of these historic assets and assures protective review of Federal projects that might adversely affect their historic character. For a downtown district like Morristown, it creates an opportunity for private property owners and developers to explore federal investment tax credits for qualified historic building renovations. Properties considered for the National Register will automatically be included in the Tennessee Register.

Love Stories Both Fact and Fiction Are Center of Biltmore’s Newest Exhibition “Fashionable Romance: Wedding Gowns in Film” set for February 12 through July 4

GUESTS ENTERING Biltmore House

during the first half of 2016 may get the impression they’ve walked onto a movie set with a wedding at the center of its story. Dramatic draping and silk roses over the front door of Biltmore House and a six-foot tall wedding cake in the Entry Hall will all but make that first impression true. Starting February 12, Biltmore will present a new exhibition, “Fashionable Romance: Wedding Gowns in Film.” Showcasing 40 award-winning wedding gowns and costumes throughout Biltmore House, the exhibition spans 300 years of wedding fashion from films set in the years 1645 to 1935. The iconic Jane Austen romances of “Sense and Sensibility,” “Emma,” and “Pride and Prejudice” are included. The exhibition will run through July 4. The costumes come to Biltmore from Cosprop Ltd., the same London-based company that furnished the costumes for Biltmore’s 2015 “Dressing Downton” exhibition of clothing from the PBS Masterpiece series “Downton Abbey.” Elaborate flower arrangements created by Biltmore’s floral team will accompany the costumes. Simplistic and over-the-top styles will coordinate with each wedding dress. Five costumes from “The Duchess,” featuring the wedding gown worn by actress Keira Knightly and the wedding suit worn by actor Ralph Fiennes, will reside in the Banquet Hall. Flowers and ribbons in hues of peach, cream, light blue, and orange will cascade from the room’s chandeliers, reflecting the film’s English Rococo era. In the library, dramatic red roses accented with hot pink will set off the wedding dress worn by actress Helena Bonham Carter in “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.”

Vanderbilt family wedding celebrations

The exhibition continues in Antler Hill Village in the Biltmore Legacy building with a focus on 60 years of Vanderbilt Family wedding fashion. Stories will be shared about George and Edith Vanderbilt’s courtship, plans for their wedding, guests and gifts, and their Biltmore homecoming after a fourmonth honeymoon. The exhibition will include a closer look at Cornelia Vanderbilt’s wedding to John Cecil in 1924. Although Cornelia’s original wedding gown and veil worn by her mother Edith are not in Biltmore’s collection, John Bright, an Oscar-winning designer with Cosprop Ltd., recreated both from photographs and notes. Photo courtesy of The Biltmore Company

Another highlight of the exhibition is the wedding veil worn by Mary Lee Ryan in her marriage to William A.V. Cecil, grandson of George Vanderbilt. This family heirloom was also worn by Mrs. Cecil’s cousin Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy when she married future President John F. Kennedy. Also on display will be Mrs. Cecil’s wedding gown – a classic example of 1950s fashion with a tiny waist, bell-shaped skirt, and satin bows. Admission to “Fashionable Romance: Wedding Gowns in Film” will be included in the general admission ticket price.

Cassandra Dowd

I feel that working with students and families is a calling.”

CASSANDRA DOWD

never knows how the needs of others are going to shape her day. That caring, attentive attitude is part of why she’s been named the State Assistant Principal of the Year by the Tennessee Association of Secondary School Principals. “I feel that working with students and families is a calling,” said Cassandra, who is the assistant principal at Bearden High School. “I enjoy the teaching and learning process, as well as the administrative role that involves facilitating the direction of the school.” Cassandra is in her third year at Bearden. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English education from Trevecca University and a graduate degree in instructional leadership from Tennessee Technological University. “Every day is different,” she said. “Unlike a teacher, my schedule is different every day. am frequently in meetings with parents and teachers to discuss individual student needs, as well as meetings that support the work of the school.” Cassandra’s workdays can include a wide variety of responsibilities. “I handle discipline for the freshman class, evaluate teachers, supervise students, and work with guidance on scheduling and other student needs,” she said. “I also assist with implementation of interventions and positive behavior supports. I start with a plan for each day, but it often changes based on the needs of others.” The job certainly keeps her on her toes, but Cassandra enjoys that fast pace. She has a

particular fondness for ninth-graders and does everything possible to make that transition year go as smoothly as possible for the students. “The biggest challenge is having enough time to get everything done,” she said. “The to-do list is never-ending!” Because of this honor, Cassandra is now eligible to be named the National Assistant Principal of the Year. That winner will be announced during a conference in Orlando this month. “I enjoy the relationships I build with others, as well as the fast pace,” she said. “I also enjoy the problem solving aspect of the work. Each day is a new challenge.”

A Wise Business Owner Has Many Counselors S O JUST WHO should a small

business owner look to as a wise counselor? Free advice is seemingly available from a never ending chorus of people, including the well-intentioned but uninformed and those individuals who possess the requisite experience required to help you make thoughtful, well-informed decisions. Whether you’re new to self-employment or a seasoned veteran, you’ve already discovered that there is no shortage of people willing to offer their opinions on your decision to enter into or navigate the entrepreneurial marketplace. The lack of knowledge or expertise on the part of wellmeaning individuals offering their advice is no barrier. But, as you will soon discover, those in the best position to offer their advice are seemingly more reserved. They tend to listen more and ask questions before offering you their opinions drawn from their years of accumulated wisdom.

Business

Experienced or inexperienced, people are only sharing their opinions with you. They are neither right nor wrong. Sift through the information that you’ve received, separating the pearls of wisdom that can be helpful, and then ignore all the rest. Those with the best intentions often doubt whether you can succeed, while others may outright criticize your decisions. Keep in mind that the advice they offer is usually based on their own personal feelings of whether they could succeed in the small business marketplace that you have chosen for yourself. Experienced or inexperienced, people are only sharing their opinions with you. They are neither right nor wrong. Sift through the information that you’ve received, separating the pearls of wisdom that can be helpful,

and then ignore all the rest. Armed with the best information available, a well-thought out business model, dedication, and perseverance, let the voice in your head for your dream be louder than the sea of voices from everyone else. However, avoid the pitfall of totally ignoring the advice of wise counselors. Believing that you have it “dialed-in” and that you’re the center of the universe is just as dangerous as accepting the advice of the uninformed. Believe in what you’re doing, and pursue your dreams on your terms.

Truth Be Told WHAT WOULD HAPPEN

if everyone just told the simple truth? With politics so prominent, it seems communication is more about rhetoric than substance. While a candidate for an office may write a great speech, could he or she not just speak from the heart from time to time? I’m not suggesting important leaders just “willy nilly” stand in front of television cameras ad libbing. However, a large dose of authenticity is a vital ingredient in gaining the trust of others. Part of why there’s much discord in political environments on both sides is a lack of trust. That’s often because the message doesn’t match the messenger or the words lack sincerity. According to the Huffington Post, “our time has been called the ‘age of loneliness.’ It’s estimated that one in five Americans suffers from persistent loneliness, and while we’re more ‘connected’ than ever before, social media may actually be exacerbating the problem.” While one may have many social network “friends,” many of those are often surface acquaintances. We need more than that. Skilled communication is still critical in today’s competitive economy. As a professional

speaker and writer, I’m always looking for ways to share stories in as few words as possible. Precision in conversation should be like working on a piece of great literature. Think about simple ways to communicate more effectively: » Plan: Think through who you’re talking to and why. Outcomes of your conversations should be clarity and unity. Clear communication doesn’t result in second guessing, assumptions, and conflict. It’s been said that most arguments are not really arguments; they’re conversations that were misunderstood. » Edit: Recently I was introduced to a new word: Logorrhea. It means excessive and often incoherent talkativeness. Basically it’s someone who never stops talking. If you’re the type of person who thinks out loud, you’ll drive people away. As you drive others away, you’ll wonder where they went and why. Unfortunately, this is common and exhausting. » Cut: Intentional conversations should be planned, edited, and cut. There should be a desired outcome, leaving opportunity to elaborate when appropriate. Sound bite conversations only dissipate opportunity for

authenticity and trust. Some conversations are to be spontaneous. They can be opportunities to make new friends and learn more about those you already know. Yet even those should be intentional. Listen more, talk less. While distractions may tempt you to look away, don’t. Be attentive. While we can advance with technology, we can also hold on to time tested absolutes. One of which is taking the time to make sure that communicating well is a skill that is developed each day. Pay attention. Listen. Speak clearly. Maintain good body language. Know when to be quiet. Clarify when needed. Relationships will always be the driving force behind happiness, success, and fulfillment. Rarely do they reach their full potential without understanding this vital skill. Truth be told, we all need it more than we know. Beth Townsend is a dynamic freelance speaker and writer and can be reached at 225.910.7426. Follow her blog at http://bethtownsend.wordpress.com. Family Life

Winter Day Arts and Crafts Projects for Kids

N

OTHING CAN be more

stressing on a mom than when she has a houseful of bored children when the weather is bad. It’s important that moms have tricks up their sleeves and a ready supply of activities that will keep the kids busy all day long. Here are two fun projects to entertain both you and the children. Be sure to write down the supplies you’ll need to have on hand so you can purchase them in advance. When those cold and dreary weather days come, all you’ll need to do is pull out your supplies and have fun. Fun with Beans and Legumes Supplies needed: Cardboard or poster board, white glue, paint brushes, pencil, beans and legumes in different sizes and colors Instructions: » Give each child a piece of cardboard or poster board. » Have your children draw a design. It can be something as simple as a stick person, shape, picture of their home, flower, etc. » Instruct your children to paint a coat of

glue on a small portion of their scene. » Have your child choose beans or legumes to arrange on top of the glue. » After the picture is completely designed with the beans and legumes, allow it to dry flat. Don’t hold it upright until you’re sure they have set. Fun with Pasta Supplies needed: Different colors and shapes of pasta, construction paper, wax paper, cooking oil Instructions: » Boil the pasta until soft but not too mushy. Add a bit of cooking oil to the boiling water to keep the pasta from sticking and clumping together. Tip: To liven up bland pasta, add food coloring. » Drain the pasta and rinse it with cold water. » Make sure the pasta is completely cool before you place it in a bowl for the children to work with. » Give your children a piece of construction paper. Demonstrate to them how they can make designs out of the cooked pasta. For instance, spaghetti can be used for hair, flower stalks, the outline of houses,

etc. Macaroni can be used to make flowers. Spiral noodles can be used to make a poodle or dog, lasagna can be used to make a truck, and so on. » Once completed, gently cover it with wax paper and place inside a heavy book. When dry, the pasta will stick to the construction paper. Special Tips Purchase a large plastic tub to store all the supplies. Also, be on the lookout for supplies that are reduced when you’re out doing your normal shopping. Stock up on beans, legumes, pasta, buttons, glue, construction paper, paint brushes, etc. Purchase a photo box or large Tupperware container for each of your children. Have them place their completed art projects into their own container. This will keep all of their projects in one place, and as the years roll by, it will be fun pulling their handiwork out and looking at it. Raising Happy Children

R

AISING CHILDREN is hard.

If you’re a parent, this is something you know deep down in your bones. As I go around the country teaching and interacting with young people, I see a few common threads. Some are a little discouraging, but many are so full of hope. What makes me sad is when I meet children and teens who seem to be lacking in so many essential skills to help them to be successful but mainly to help them feel good about themselves, which is the key to them being successful. These lacking skills are often self-confidence, integrity, charity, empathy, ambition, and social skills. However, where I find hope even when I see the lack of these skills is in the children’s desire to learn these skills and make them a part of their lives. Once children understand the payoff for acquiring these skills, they are usually very interested and even dedicated in mastering these ideas. Parents, the most important 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE Februar y 2016

thing for you and I to realize when it comes to helping our children develop these attributes is to know that our children are not born with them... they MUST be taught by example, by constant discussion, by constant praise, and by reinforcement. Children want to be proud of who they are. Children want to make the right choices. Children want to be good, because being good is what helps us to be happy. So how do we do this? We must look for opportunities every day to show our children the joy we feel by living these precepts. Do our children watch us: » Be kind with words and deeds to all those we associate with, especially inside the walls of our home? » Live a 100% honest life? » Do hard things with grace and gratitude, always believing that things will work out? » Serve others continually, always looking for opportunities to do for others? » As we NEVER speak unkindly about

others, but instead only notice the good that others have to offer? » As we demonstrate impeccable manners, always striving to speak and act in a way that shows how much we value those around us? Parents, what do we really want? If you’re like me, you want your children to be happy and successful. We have to invest everything we have – our time, our energy, our prayers, and especially our love – into the constant mentoring of our children. But when we do, we will ultimately have what money and status can never acquire, and that’s happy children.

Swimsuit Season is Near

W

ITH SPRING just around the corner, many of us are

thinking about how we are going to look in our warm weather wardrobes – especially those swimsuits. Often unwanted body fat taints this image. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically proven, non-invasive, and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape.

When you can’t seem to get rid of that last little bit of fat from your waistline, Liposonix treatment may be the best fit for you. Liposonix is available in Knoxville at Southeastern Dermatology. “Liposonix is a revolutionary, non-surgical solution for people who are close to their ideal shape but have stubborn areas of fat that just won’t go away, no matter how much they exercise or diet,” said Dr. Doppelt. “The procedure is completed in just one office visit and takes about one hour. With little to no downtime or aftercare, you can resume your active lifestyle right away. While individual results can vary, patients typically achieve a waistline reduction of approximately one to two inches (equivalent to one pant or dress size) within 8-12 weeks after receiving a single treatment.” For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, tumescent microcannular liposuction may be the answer. This in-office, minimally invasive procedure that utilizes only local anesthesia was pioneered by a dermatologist in 1985 and is now considered the worldwide standard for liposuction. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are two well-known devices that have been cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). These devices serve as an enhancement to tumescent microcannular liposuction, promoting easier fat removal and better skin contraction. After SmartLipo or SlimLipo, most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated. The neck, arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. For more information on these treatments and to discover how to look as good as you feel, call Southeastern Dermatology today.
