From the Publisher I HAVE BEEN blessed to have

three great women role models in my life as I was growing up. My mother, grandmother, and aunt were all instrumental in shaping my character and my outlook on life, which has resulted in the person I am today. My mom taught me how a mother’s love is so important in a child’s development. Mom was devoted to her two daughters, and she unselfishly gave her all for them. I grew up in the ’50s when few women worked outside the home, but mom (and dad) wanted a home in a nice suburb where their kids could grow up in a safe neighborhood. So mom worked to help save for the down payment, but she was always there for us for all the important times in our lives, and for that unselfish love, I am forever grateful. Grandma Emily, the only grandmother I knew, became a widow shortly after I was born, and her grandkids were the light of her life. But grandma was not one to sit idly.

Independent Knoxville Area Publishers

She kept busy with social events, club activities, and volunteering, as well as cooking wonderful meals for us when mom was at work. Grandma Emily taught me to dream and dream big and not to let anyone take that dream away. She taught me to focus on the positive and not to let the negative take me down. My aunt LaVerne, who married later in life and raised three boys of her own, had a hand in raising my sister and me. My aunt was a career woman who pursued a college education and graduated at the top of her class.. She instilled in me the importance of an education, and, in fact, her chosen career in medical technology became my chosen career. There is so much more I could say about these three women, but during this month, when we celebrate moms and those in that role, I just want to say how grateful I am to have had them in my life. I miss them all every day, but their influence will never be forgotten. Happy Mother’s Day!

Your New Standard in

Kitchen & Bath Design and Furnishings

I

F YOU ARE contemplating a kitchen or bath redesign or new home construction, you are invited to discover an entirely new experience

in design. Shae Design Studio founder and owner, Shae Seeber, has revolutionized the area’s kitchen and bath design marketplace by combining a variety of disciplines that are often missing from more traditional cabinet vendors.

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2016

Shae Design Studio combines the latest 3D kitchen design technology, along with their interior design skills and decade-long experience in residential construction, to provide homeowners with a totally new, turn-key experience. Shae Design Studio is where great design meets functionality. Designed to meet the daily needs of your busy family, their designs also create that showcase designer quality look that you have been searching for. But what you will appreciate even more is Shae Design Studio’s price tag. With prices up to 30% lower than competing cabinet stores, your money will go even further. This month Everything Knoxville is proud to share with you their interview with Shae Design Studio founder, Shae Seeber. EK: Tell us, who is Shae Design Studio? Shae: We are designers, and we create beautiful and functional living spaces that people want to come home to. Whether you’re renovating, redesigning a space, or trying to select furniture pieces, the designers at Shae have the talent to assist you with all of your interior design needs. From flooring to lighting and anything in between, we do it all and walk you through each step of the process. We are the first ones you will meet, from a complete renovation to styling your space with the latest home furnishings from our design curated studio and showroom. EK: What makes Shae Design Studio different? Shae: As a female owned and operated company, we do so much more than sell people cabinet boxes. We want to understand your needs and how you live. Shae Design Studio is a total renovation and interior design resource, and we have things that you will not find anywhere else. We are one of the largest design teams in Knoxville and offer a wide breadth of skills. We’re not looking to keep the same layout in the same old kitchen; we’re looking to take out walls and do whatever we need to do to give your Photos by D. Roberts Photography

space the most potential. Designers are present from the beginning to the end of the process, and we are physically present at the job site before we even begin the design. Also, because we work in a collaborative atmosphere, I touch base with most projects that come into the studio. EK: Your new design studio appears to be an interactive environment where homeowners can discover all of the potential that exists in their home’s kitchen and baths. How does your interior design experience benefit your clients? Shae: During the past 10 years, I have had the opportunity to work on thousands of spaces. I’m very confident in the construction process. Having four children has given me a lot to consider – everything from storage to functionality. A lot of companies only offer single aspects of the design process, but we cover everything. We want to understand your needs and how you live in order to design not only a space, but a lifestyle. EK: Tell us about your process. Where do I start if I want to renovate? Shae: Whatever the project is, we begin by sending a member of our interior design team to discuss your space with you. After determining what your unique needs are, we create 3D renderings of your best options to help you visualize what other people often have difficulty visualizing. EK: Why do homeowners find hiring an interior designer so stressful? Shae: It’s not the least bit stressful with Shae Design Studio. Our objective is to encourage you to express your exact needs and wants. We are design facilitators who use our skills to incorporate your ideas into your new spaces. Your new design should be a reflection of you and not the designer. We also work within your budget parameters. EK: Why should the 3D technology you use be important to your clients? Shae: Our 3D renderings bring your design

to life. They help you visualize and connect with the spaces we’re creating for you. Being able to show the homeowner what something is going to look like in advance helps to better connect them with the design, taking the customary guesswork out of the project. EK: With so many options in Knoxville, why should I buy from Shae Design Studio? Shae: At Shae Design Studio, you will work directly with designers who are passionate about both you and your story and not the typical sales environment you find elsewhere. Our designers travel extensively to hand select each and every unique piece that you will discover in our showroom. By offering our clients all of these designer-inspired items directly, it allows us to offer our customers the very best prices possible. You don’t have to shop all around Knoxville searching and trying to find all of the elements needed to complete your project. We bring it all together for you. Also, because we know that our furniture will be an important part of your life for many years, we have invested many hours searching for just the right lines that we are confident you will appreciate. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to tell our readers? Shae: We are visionaries. We see what others don’t see. We hear your ideas, understand how you live, and collaborate with you to begin the process of bringing your new floor plan to life with our 3D renderings. We launch each design project with an engaging preview so you can begin to visualize the potential we see for yourself. But don’t take our word for it. Discover all of the opportunities that Shae offers, and prepare to be inspired!

Fees!Fees!Fees! Are Brokers Worth Their Fees?

A

SK ANY investor this question

and you likely receive one of the three very short responses: No, maybe, or yes. I will be the first to admit that I have asked myself this question on multiple occasions. Recently I was reviewing a prospective client’s investment account and asked, “Why is she even paying this person?” A little secret, known only in the investment community, is that many “investment professionals” are not required to have any formal training outside of an entrance exam. That’s right, your “investment professional” may not have earned a college degree, any advanced designations, or even any education beyond the financial products that their wholesalers are promoting. Even more confusing are the many financial publications that are critical of brokers on one page and supportive of their efforts on the next. And with so many conflicting messages in today’s financial marketplace, it is easy to understand just why investors ask themselves this question so often. So why is there such a divergence of opinions on broker’s fees? Here’s my opinion: 1. No, a broker is not worth the fees they charge. Too often I see investors who have relatively simple investment objectives but pay a broker for something they could likely do on their own. They do not own a business, they do not have tax planning needs, they have a very simple investment philosophy, they have time to perform their own due diligence, and they have a solid grip on their investing emotions. So why would this group of investors pay fees for a broker when they could perform most of these tasks by themselves? I call these individuals the do-it-yourself investors. I have personally reviewed many of the investment portfolios for these self-directed people, and more often than not, they are managing their money rather well. If you are a do-it-yourself investor, congratulations. You are in the minority. Most investors have a difficult time controlling their emotions. Many studies have been performed

reflecting the underperforming on the “would be” do-it-yourself investor who cannot control their emotions. However, if you are a do-ityourself investor, a broker’s fee, in my opinion, is not worth the investment. My only advice might be that you consider retaining a fiduciary to review your investment portfolio every 5-10 years to make certain you are on track to achieving your personal objectives. This could be money well invested. 2. Maybe a broker is worth the fees they charge. There are very few investors who fit the criteria of a do-it-yourself investor. Perhaps your tax liability seems unreasonably high, you are a business owner, you have complex investing needs, you do not have the time to conduct the research needed to act independently, or your investing emotions tend to get the better of you. If you prefer the advice of an expert, then a fee may be a good investment. Make certain that you know exactly what services your broker is offering and what their TOTAL fee is. Remember, almost every investment has some costs involved. These costs may be in the form of a fee, transaction cost, 12b-1, cap, exclusion, management fee, M&E, surrender, etc. 3. Yes, a broker is worth the fees they charge. Many of us are business owners, have complex tax planning needs, wish to maximize our estates, want to reduce debt, and desire to maximize our retirement incomes. The fees charged by a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ are definitely worth the investment, particularly if your planner offers a comprehensive approach to planning not offered by all planners. This comprehensive approach seeks to establish a relationship with the client where the CFP® will offer many other valuable services for virtually the same fee as the broker who will only assist you in managing your portfolio. These CFPs® will assist you with your cash flow, debt reduction, insurance assessment, estate plan, and other financial areas – all as part of the scope of the work they perform for you. As entrepreneurs, our businesses are often the single largest investment of resources we

Justin Goodbread, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

are likely to make in our lifetimes. Doesn’t it just make good sense to consult with an advisor who will structure their fees to include the comprehensive approach you deserve to maximize your potential for you, your family, and your business to your specific goals, needs, and plans? And while the cost of investing is an important consideration, what might be even more important are the net results of your investing experience. Random Acts of Flowers’ Annual Garden Party

T

HERE IS no better

party than Random Acts of Flowers’ annual Garden Party! This year’s event will take place on June 3rd at the dazzling home of H.M. “Hash” and Nazzy Hashemian, which is located in the River Sound community. Pilot Flying J is the premier sponsor of this year’s party. Event co-chairs Jacqueline Holdbrooks and Kay Clayton have done an incredible job planning the evening, which will include live music by The Marble City Shooters and delicious fare prepared by Simon Hall, Executive Chef of Creative Catering of Knoxville, The Coop Café. The silent auction will feature a “Pop-Up Art Gallery” coordinated by Denise StewartSanabria with art available for bidding in many different mediums and price ranges. Not only is the Garden Party a celebration of RAF’s mission, but it also raises critical funding that sustains the organization’s operating budget. RAF Knoxville opened in July 2008 and currently serves nine hospitals, more than 60 nursing homes and assisted living facilities, nine community health organizations, and eight hospice care centers in East

Tennessee. Since its launch, RAF Knoxville has delivered beautiful bouquets to nearly 60,000 individuals in our community, repurposed more than 63,000 vases, composted thousands of pounds of green waste, and collaborated with local businesses and organizations to spread joy to those who need it most. It is for this reason it is so important that we acknowledge the sponsors of the 2016 Garden Party, in addition to Pilot Flying J, including Clayton Homes, The University of Tennessee Medical Center, Randy Boyd, Betsey Bush, 21st Century Mortgage, U.S. Cellular/Thomas and Deanene Catani, Keith and Jacqueline Holdbrooks, Larsen and Adrian Jay, All Occasions Party Rentals, and Enrollment First, Inc. For more information, contact Jen Sheehan at 865-633-9082. Random Acts of Flowers recycles and repurposes flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities across the country.

Cynthia St. Germain, BA, BSN, RN, who has

been a registered nurse since 1996 and an aesthetics nurse since 2005, received a BA in Psychology from the University of Tennessee and a BS in Nursing from CarsonNewman College. She served in the US Army and attained the rank of captain. She is both a nurse injector and a trainer nationally for product manufacturers, teaching injection procedures, techniques, and theory to physicians and nurse practitioners. The nonsurgical injectable products Cynthia offers include: • Dysport® and Botox® • Restylane®, Perlane®, and Juvéderm® XC • Sculptra • Restylane® Silk

HydraFacial MD therapy produces healthy, hydrated skin without any invasive action. It has proven to be a more effective and painless method for reaching deep-seated cellular debris in the pores. Once the pores are cleansed with this method, it reduces the pore size, resulting in a softer, smoother appearance. The addition of this procedure will allow us to offer a full-service surgical and non-surgical menu to our patients. Our article last month described the Collagen P.I.N. microneedling procedure that we now offer. This type of informative article was met with such positive feedback that we decided to do the same this month for the HydraFacial MD therapy procedure. The combination of these procedures will significantly promote the desired effect for a younger, healthier, enhanced appearance. There are four steps to the HydraFacial MD therapy process: 1. A prep solution is applied to the facial area to cleanse, exfoliate, loosen dead skin cells, help soften sebum within the pores for extraction of debris, and infusion with antioxidants. 2. After delivering a glycolic and salicylic acid solution to the face, the vacuum extraction step stretches the pores a little to allow debris to exit the follicle. Once this cleansing is done, there is a reduction in the pore size for a smoother skin appearance. 3. A derma-builder solution can then used to fill in facial lines. 4. The final step rehydrates the skin by saturating it with collagen-rich antioxidants to fight free radicals on the skin. To seal these ingredients in, a moisturizer is applied to the skin area. A sunscreen layer is added as additional protection. The HydraFacial MD procedure takes under an hour to perform. Dean Kleto, MD, and Cynthia St. Germain, BA, BS, RN, are excited to add this service to the ones they already perform. Dr. Kleto brings excellent training from Duke University and Chattanooga’s Erlanger Hospital to the surgical arena as he performs a variety of enhancing plastic surgery procedures at Park West and Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge Hospitals. Ms. St. Germain has a highly-developed, astute aesthetic eye that, coupled with her knowledge and skill, brings a natural-looking result when she works with her patients. It can and has been said that both of these practitioners have a passion for their work, as any artist has. A free, no-obligation consultation for any of the non-surgical procedures can be scheduled by calling 865-394-4966.

I

BELIEVE that the opportunity to serve

others in my community is what ultimately led me to pursue a 30-year career in healthcare human resources. But as is so often the case, our lives enter a new season, and our life’s path forward evolves. Although I began pursuing a new direction for my life more than a year ago, my desire to serve my community is still a driving force in my life. So how does a gal, born and raised in East Tennessee who has served others in the world of corporate human resources, make a decision to sell furniture? Thoughtfully and prayerfully. I really believe that discovering Amish Excellence was an answer to prayer. I’ve discovered a product where both quality and hand-craftsmanship, along with affordability, combine to offer customers an unprecedented opportunity to enjoy the finest furniture

available anywhere – and at a price far below what you might expect to pay elsewhere. As every piece of furniture I sell at Amish Excellence is custom designed, I have the unique opportunity to get to know each and every one of my customers. I also enjoy knowing that every piece of furniture I help design will likely become a legacy – furniture that will be handed down from generation to generation, much the way it was done in the past when quality built furniture was more prevalent. What you will discover at Amish Excellence is a virtually unlimited selection of the finest, all-American, hand-crafted furniture certified as authentic Amish. If you thought that Amish furniture was limited to the “mission” and “craftsman” style of furniture, think again. These same skilled Amish craftsmen can hand-craft just about any design you can

imagine, including Asian-inspired, mid-century modern, contemporary, and more. Amish Excellence is about choices. Your choices. Furniture your way. Your design. Your wood selection. Your stain or paint. And, more importantly, your budget. I would like to personally invite you to visit us at Amish Excellence to experience all the possibilities imaginable in a comfortable, nonsales environment while rediscovering a level of quality craftsmanship that you thought no longer existed.

History

Meaningful, Moving Ways to Support Veterans This Memorial Day “A

LL GAVE SOME. Some gave

all.” You likely hear that phrase around Memorial Day every year, but do you know its origin? Or what Memorial Day is supposed to mean to the veterans who gave some, the survivors of those who gave all, and the Americans who enjoy continued freedom because of those sacrifices? Americans, it seems, do understand the importance of Memorial Day. A 2015 poll by Rasmussen Reports found 52% of those polled viewed Memorial Day as one of the nation’s most important holidays, while 42% saw it as at least somewhat important. When Americans first began observing the day in the late 1860s, they were pausing to remember the more than half a million Americans who had died in the then-recently ended Civil War. Today Memorial Day observances not only remember the sacrifice of the deceased who gave all, but also the thousands of living veterans, many of whom are wounded in body, mind, or both. “Amid the celebrations marking the unofficial start of the summer season, it can be difficult to find meaningful ways to observe Memorial Day,” said Jeff Roy, chairman of the board of the Purple Heart Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides counseling, support, and advocacy for Purple Heart recipients and raises funds for programs that support veterans and their families. “But Americans truly do want to express their gratitude to veterans for their many sacrifices. Fortunately, there are many ways they can 16

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2016

help make a difference for veterans.” Here are some meaningful ways you can show your support for veterans this Memorial Day: » Help provide a service dog to a veteran with physical disabilities or PTSD. The National Education for Assistance Dog Services (NEADS) provides service dogs for free to qualifying veterans. You can help by making an online donation, sponsor a “doggie dorm” for service dogs in training, raise a puppy that will become a service dog, or become a volunteer. Visit www.neads.org to learn more. » Donate to the Purple Heart Foundation’s scholarship program, which provides financial support to Purple Heart recipients and their families for college-related expenses like tuition, books, and room and board. » Instead of spending the day indulging in your own cookout, contact the local veterans’ home or veterans’ hospital and volunteer there for the day. Or you can simply take an hour or two to visit with the residents there and thank them for their service. » Visit the local cemetery and place flags or flowers on the graves of veterans. Contact the cemetery first for their visiting guidelines and to learn where the veterans' section is located – many cemeteries have special sections set aside for veterans. » Help ensure veterans make the most of the services available to them. Donate to the Purple Heart Foundation’s National Service Officers Program, which helps pay to place service officers in Veterans Administration facilities across the country. These officers

are specially trained to help veterans access the many benefits, programs, and services available to them. » If your community sponsors a Memorial Day parade, attending is a great way to show your appreciation and support for veterans – but you can do even more. Prior to the event, contact the parade organizers and find out what veterans' groups will be marching in the parade. Offer to donate water, snacks, or anything else the veterans may need to make their walk easier and more enjoyable. » Pick up the phone and call the veterans in your life – almost everyone knows at least one person who has served in the military. Perhaps your grandfather served in World War II, the Korean War, or Vietnam. You may know someone who has recently returned from serving in the Global War on Terror. Take some time to let those people know you’re thinking of them and appreciate their service. » Observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 pm on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. Established by Congress, the one-minute observance is a chance for all Americans to pause in the middle of their summer celebrations to remember the sacrifices of the nation’s veterans. From simple and small to noble and industrious, it’s possible to find many meaningful ways to honor all who gave some and the some who gave all. And as for that now-famous phrase – it was first uttered by Howard William Osterkamp of Dent, Ohio, a Korean War veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart.

Narrow the Retirement Savings Gender Gap

IN RETIREMENT

savings, many women lag behind men. The 2015 Financial Finesse’s annual survey, The Gender Gap in Financial Literacy, offers evidence of the problem. Disturbing statistics emerge. The median IRA and workplace retirement plan savings balance for a 45-year-old woman was $43,446. For a 45-year-old man, it was $63,875.1 Obviously you can’t retire on that. Financial Finesse then gauged the savings the 45-year-olds need to replace 70% of pre-retirement income and pay for estimated medical expenses (LTC not included). The median male saver needed $212,256, the female $268,404 to reach that goal.1 Gaps in financial literacy: 67% of pre-retiree women had a general knowledge of investment classes compared to 84% of men. 34% of women were confident about their portfolio allocation versus 48% of men.2 How can women address this? » Find out where your savings stand now: A retirement planning calculator (available online) can help you see how much more you need to save yearly and over your career. » Save enough to get the match: If your employer matches a percentage of your retirement plan contributions, contribute enough each paycheck to get the match. » Ask for a raise: A higher salary means more money for savings. » Cut credit card debt: Reduce debt and save. » Tax efficiency: Consult a financial professional about advantages to having your money in taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-exempt accounts. 3 » Determine your “glide path”: Many financial professionals caution retirement savers to reduce the risk in their portfolio as they age. Glide paths are different for everyone, however. If you need to accelerate your retirement savings effort, you may need to accept more risk in your portfolio in exchange for the possibility of greater returns. Women are slowly narrowing the retirement saving gender gap. Financial Finesse found that 4.2% more women had an investment strategy in the 2015 survey than in the 2012 edition, and 2% more had done a retirement savings projection.

NVIRONMENTAL TOXINS

have a significant role in our health. There are many reasons that our bodies retain fat, but environmental toxin exposure may be one of the most important. We live in an environment with excessive chemicals that our bodies have difficulty processing. In a recent report by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals, nearly every person that was tested had toxins stored in their fatty tissue. Flame retardants are just one example. Also, Bisphenol A, a hormone-like substance found in plastics, was excreted in their urine. 287 chemicals were found in the umbilical cord blood of infants tested. We live in a time of unprecedented toxic overload. Even so, our bodies have amazing mechanisms to preserve life. As the testing from CDC showed, fat basically surrounds toxins to protect the body from toxic overload. In essence, one reason we gather fat is to serve as a protection mechanism. So what do we do? How can we safely detox and lose those extra pounds that tend to remain even after struggling with dieting? Detoxifying seems foreign to most, but actually, your body is trying to rid itself of unwanted chemicals on a daily basis. Through the elimination processes, we rid ourselves of excess toxins through the kidneys and intestines. Perspiration and breathing are methods that the body uses as well. Keeping our organs healthy goes a long way in helping to detoxify. According to the National Institute of Health, eating whole grains, vegetables, fruits, lean meats, and less sodium are optimal for kidney health. Optimal intestinal health consists of eating lots of fiber through whole grains, drinking plenty of filtered or spring water, and maintaining probiotic flora. Taking care of our skin to aid elimination is also important. Doing the simple practice of taking a hot towel and rubbing the skin until it turns pink helps to eliminate dry outer skin and helps the skin to perspire properly. Also, taking deep breaths can help increase lung

capacity, which maximizes detoxification from the lungs. Glutathione is one of the most important antioxidants for detoxifying. It is critical for immune function and controlling inflammation. It is the master detoxifier and the protector of our cells. It affects how well our metabolism functions. There are several ways to increase this immune boosting antioxidant in the body. According to Mark Hyman, MD, a practicing physician and founder of The UltraWellness Center, consuming sulfur-rich foods is very important for glutathione production. These foods include garlic, onions, and the cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, cauliflower, watercress, etc.). He also states that exercise is extremely important to help maximize glutathione production, as well as taking certain vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins C, B6, B12, E, folate, and selenium. So how can we rid those excess pounds that have accumulated due to toxic overload? In her book The Fast Metabolism Diet, nutritionist and wellness consultant, Haylie Pomroy, states that eating foods in three phases has a positive impact on metabolism. These three phases create a metabolism that burns the fat and enables the body to unlock and eliminate the accumulated fat in a 28 day period. She also emphasizes that drinking plenty of water, eating three meals daily with snacks, and exercising all play an important part in this program. She also recommends no gluten, corn, soy, refined sugar, caffeine, dairy, alcohol, dried fruits or fruit juices, artificial sweeteners, and diet fat-free foods. If you are having trouble losing those excess pounds around the waist, check out this program. It accommodates vegan diets, vegetarian diets, and gluten-free diets as well. Those extra pounds that are hard to get off may be the result of environmental toxic overload. Learning how to support the elimination systems in our bodies, as well as following important dietary changes to help unlock and unleash unwanted fat, may be just what is needed to help navigate through this toxic environment.

It’s an imperfection in the performance that players typically try to eliminate in practice, and in the hands of a less-secure musician, that sound could easily be edited from the recording with Pro Tools recording technology. But in their own way, those imperfections are perfect. For all of the masterful technique and flashy ability that’s brought Emmanuel recognition among the world’s greatest guitarists, that finger noise lets the audience know he is one of them. This family-friendly event will once again bring barbeque cook teams from all across the United States to Sevierville to compete for $17,500 in cash and prizes and the title of Tennessee State Champion in the Bush’s Best TN State Championship Cook Off. Rounding out the event is toe-tapping bluegrass music, incredible arts and crafts, kids’ games, and the Mountain Soul Vocal Competition honoring Sevierville’s favorite hometown girl, Dolly Parton. Visit the barbeque cook teams you’ve seen on cable channels like the Food Network as you stroll through the “Que Zone.” Bring a lawn chair for the free bluegrass concerts with rising stars and legends of the bluegrass genre, including Night Flyer, The Bankesters, Jimbo Whaley & Greenbrier, Mountain Faith Band (as seen on America’s Got Talent), Mountain Ruckus (presented by Dixie Stampede), The Church Sisters, Bobby Osborne & The Rocky Top X-Press, Flashback Band, The Gibson Brothers, and more. On Saturday, the competition starts early. Teams will cook an estimated 2,832 pounds of meat, including 20 pounds of pulled pork,

24 pounds of brisket, 5 pounds of chicken, and 10 pounds of ribs each. The announcement of BBQ champs will be at 4 pm. Winning teams will receive recognition in chicken, ribs, pork, and brisket, as well as specialty categories like “Anything Bush Beans,” “Anything Swaggerty’s Farm Sausage,” sauce, and dessert. The Kids’ Zone and the Bluegrass Music Tent add fun and enrichment for the kids and families who attend. (Don’t worry, instructors will be on site to help.) Both of these attractions will be open until 9 pm each day. A highlight of the weekend is the 12th Annual Mountain Soul Vocal Competition Finals held on May 21. Finalists from around the nation will sing their hearts out for a chance to win cash

and prizes. This competition honors the songwriting of Dolly Parton. Competitors, male and female, must sing a song written by Dolly (there are more than 3,000) and do so in their own style (rock, rap, country, bluegrass, swing, soul, etc.). The People’s Choice Tasting Contest gives festival-goers a chance to weigh in on their favorite competition meat. Guests can purchase tickets for $15 in advance by calling the Sevierville Chamber of Commerce at 865-453-6411 or at the festival. The tasting takes place between 2:30 and 3:30 pm on May 21 and allows event-goers to sample and vote for their favorite championship pulled pork from participating teams. Redefining Style and Comfort

O

NE THING we all know is that

everyone wants to be comfortable with style. That’s why the pull-on pant has revolutionized the pant industry, and in any fabric is the perfect way to satisfy that want. We also know that what was once worn by our grandmothers is now a must in every woman’s wardrobe. As stated by the Wall Street Journal, “It is Monday morning. Women everywhere stare blankly into the closet wishing they could put back on their weekend yoga pants. Now they are one step closer.” Women are now shopping comfort, not just style. The zipper has become an embellishment and is no longer needed. We just want to pull it on! The pull-on pant is available in many fabrics, styles, and with and without tummy control, from skinny to full legs. Comfort and chic can now go hand in hand. In your pull-on pant, you can go to the office, change shoes, go to dinner, change shoes again, and run weekend errands. The pull-on pant we once wore only to the

Fashion

gym has been overhauled and made very “now.” Our new best friend has even been known to show up at the most elegant social events. But we cannot forget the leggings: No zipper, no buttons – just an easy pull-on. Basic black is always an option, but bold colors and prints can also make a style statement once again from office to play. The athleisure look is alive and well. This is not just a trend; pull-ons are staples in our wardrobe, breaking all the rules that we grew up with. Casual Friday is now every day, looking chic and tailored in any pull-on pant you choose. Lives are hectic, and any item of clothing that can make it easier to feel put together is a must. Be it the perfect pull-on pant from desk to dinner or for the jogger to run weekend errands, it should be in every woman’s closet!

T

HE SPY GUY, a not so secret

agent, is joining the ferocious Danny Dragonbreath and the very curious Ladybug Girl in World’s Fair Park to celebrate the end of the school year and the start of summer. Knox County Public Library invites readers of all ages to celebrate 12 years of the Children’s Festival of Reading on May 21 from 10 am to 3 pm in World’s Fair Park. This year’s festival will host some of the most popular and acclaimed children’s authors and illustrators in the country. Headlining the day are David Soman, illustrator of the very popular Ladybug Girl picture book series, and Ursula Vernon of the Dragonbreath graphic novel series. Joining them are Vince Vawter (Paperboy), Matthew Cordell (Trouble Gum), Floyd Cooper (Max and the Tag-Along Moon), and Jessica Young (My Blue is Happy and Spy Guy) and Molly Ledford of the Grammy-nominated band, Lunch Money. The Children’s Festival of Reading celebrates the literary arts with six performance stages, a Science Village, a Parade of Books, Jr. League of Knoxville’s Kids in the Kitchen, arts and crafts, One World Circus, book sales, 50 community

booths, food, music, storytelling, and tons of fun. Readers of all ages are encouraged to sign up for a summer of reading in one of the library’s summer reading clubs. Summer reading programs help students retain their academic skills during the summer. Research shows that struggling students can lose as much as one-and-a-half years of academic progress between grades 1 and 6 if they don’t read during the summer. Furthermore, summer reading offers children and youth a chance to explore books that are of personal interest. Studies show that when readers are encouraged to choose their own books, they become stronger and more engaged readers.

Admission to the Children’s Festival of Reading is free, and free parking is available in most surrounding lots. This event is made possible by the generous support of the National Endowment of the Arts, Knox County Public Library Foundation, Friends of the Library, Humanities Tennessee, Tennessee Arts Commission, Blue Cross Blue Shield of East Tennessee, East Tennessee Foundation’s Arts Fund, East Tennessee Pediatric Dentistry, ORNL Federal Credit Union, Pilot Flying J, Tennessee Arts Commission, City of Knoxville, Knoxville News Sentinel, Comcast, B97.5 and WBIR TV 10. URING MAY, Veronica G Boutique

will be featuring a beautiful and exciting new line – Bali Apparel. When I recently met with Bali’s owner, Frank, who resides in North Carolina, I became quite intrigued with his story. About 30 years ago, Frank and his wife were vacationing in Bali and saw the unique Batik fabrics being produced there. Their unique method of adding wax to a white fabric to create patterns and then coloring the remaining fabric with rich color dyes results in the creation of striking designs. The fabric is then boiled in water to remove the wax, revealing the design. This process results in a “pre-shrunk” fabric with a lovely “soft hand.” Frank and his wife watched this process, and a fashion line idea was born. This small independent line is available exclusively in Frank’s personally selected boutiques. Veronica G Boutique first introduced this clothing line last summer to rave reviews. Many customers bought multiple pieces, and then returned for more. These creations are my personal favorites to pack when we go to the beach in the summer, as it has that designer resort look. This year the line offers even more, and Frank of added months some fun touches to the pants and capris this season. If you are searching for something truly unique and enjoy a soft, flowing design for your clothing, you must see these as soon as possible, because they will be gone before you know it! Another new line we have discovered and have added to our collection is the exquisite creations of fashion jewelry designer, John Michael Richardson. These unique pieces blend the cultures of both East and West to create a look that is uniquely his own. The metal is hand-crafted in Thailand with etchings that bring unique detail to his jewelry. He mixes natural elements of horn, wood, bone, and shell from Cuba, metal stampings from the U.S., and glass beads from the Czech Republic. All items are assembled and finished in the United States. Rich in look but affordable in price, these pieces are immediately recognizable and make the perfect gift for Mother’s Day or any special occasion!

Essential Oils for the Gardener A

S SP RIN G and summer roll

around, it’s a great time to discover essential oils. If you’re looking for natural alternatives to ward off unwanted pests in your garden, here are a few tips: Rosemary oil is a potent repellent for many types of pesky insects, including flies, fleas, and mosquitoes. Rosemary is also great for deterring insect larvae like the cabbage looper caterpillar, whose voracious appetite for juicy vegetable foliage can easily destroy entire crops of brassicas, tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons. Peppermint oil is an excellent natural repellant for aphids, squash bugs, white flies, ants, and beetles. Peppermint is also the best essential oil for repelling spiders. Thyme oil works against biting insects like chiggers, ticks, and roaches. To create a broad-spectrum, all-natural insect repellent, mix equal parts of rosemary, peppermint, thyme, and clove oils (about 10 drops of each) in a spray bottle filled with water. Shake well before each use. Arborvitae is also a very effective oil to use in orchards. It

can provide protection to young tree trunks where pests have started chewing. Melaleuca is one of the few natural remedies that can inhibit environmental threats due to poor soil, wet soil, and soil that has harmful microbes. To treat existing threats or as a preventative, mix about one tablespoon of tea tree oil per cup of water in a spray bottle. Apply directly to affected plants once or twice per week. Remember to avoid spraying leaves when the weather is very hot and dry, as sunheated tea tree oil can easily burn leaves. Other essential oils with the ability to battle environmental threats include Citronella, Oregano, Thyme, Peppermint, Clove, and Cinnamon. Also effective against garden threats are oils extracted from plants in the Allium family (Onion, Garlic, etc.). How to repel larger pests If you can’t seem to keep the neighborhood tomcat from leaving his delightful presents amidst your herbs and veggies, try spraying your mulch with Rosemary oil diluted in water. Essential oils aren’t just for repelling unwanted creatures from your garden. You

can also use certain fragrant oils to attract natural pollinators to your garden. The scent of Neroli (orange blossom) is an irresistible attractant for bees, as are the essential oils of many small-blossomed flowers such as Lavender, Hyssop, Marjoram, Helichrysum, Basil, Sage, and Rosemary. Basil is a great oil to spray on tomato plants to increase vigor and flavor. Black Pepper (or any other pepper, for that matter) essential oil can also be used to deter larger mammals from your garden. Dogs, in particular, with their sensitive noses will be turned away from the strong odor of pepper oil. Apply using the same string/cloth method as with Rosemary oil (above). Knox Essential Oils is located at 4928 Homberg Drive in Suite A-5 in Bearden. For more information, call 865-474-1340.

Announcing New Clinical Trial for Appendicular Osteosarcoma in Dogs Targeting Newly Diagnosed Cases

THE ONCOLOGY SERVICE at the

University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) is offering a clinical trial for dogs with newly diagnosed appendicular osteosarcoma. Appendicular osteosarcoma (bone cancer of the leg) is a common bone cancer in large-breed dogs. It is an aggressive cancer, both at the tumor site and systemically. Over time, cancer spreads to the lungs in all patients. Currently the standard of care for dogs with this cancer is amputation of the affected limb followed by a course of chemotherapy. The average survival time for a dog treated with the standard of care is one year. Dr. Olya Smrkovski, an oncology specialist and the clinical trial’s principle investigator at UTCVM, says the profession has not been able to exceed the year survival rate because of the metastatic characteristic of the cancer. “Oncologists are looking for new therapies that will prolong our pets’ survival,” said Smrkovski. “The investigational agent in this trial has shown some initial promise as an anti-cancer drug. We hope that it will help delay the spread of this type of cancer. Canine osteosarcoma is very similar to pediatric osteosarcoma, so another hope of this trial is that if the investigational agent shows promise in dogs, it can then be used to treat humans. So this is a ‘dogs helping humans/humans helping dogs’ type of clinical trial.” This is a randomized clinical trial for dogs with newly diagnosed appendicular osteosarcoma sponsored by Morris Animal Foundation and the National Cancer Institute. All dogs will receive standard of care therapy as a part of the trial. Once the standard of care treatment is completed, some dogs may receive an investigational agent. A screening visit to determine eligibility is required, and dogs must be referred to UTCVM by their primary care veterinarian. Smrkovski says the trial is almost fully funded by the Morris Animal Foundation. “They pay for all chemotherapy treatments, some of the screening tests, and provide $1,000 toward limb amputation surgery to the owners of the qualified dogs,” she said. “Basically, if you were looking to treat your dog with the standard of care out of your own pocket, the initial work-up, amputation, and a course of chemo would cost between $4,000 and $5,000. With this trial, the owner’s cost will be between $1,500 and $2,000. All dogs will receive at least the standard of care 28

therapy. Some will also receive the free investigational agent.” For more information, contact the Clinical Trials Coordinator, Gina Galyon, LVMT, at 865-974-8387 prior to referral. One of 30 veterinary colleges in the United States, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine educates students in the art and science of

veterinary medicine and related biomedical sciences, promotes scientific research, and enhances human and animal well-being. Through its mission of research, teaching, and extension, the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) touches lives and provides real life solutions. Saying Goodbye EVERY

DOG owner knows that they’re not a pet but a “family member,” and their loss is nearly as difficult as losing other family members. As we celebrate Memorial Day, we’re dedicating this article to our 13-yearold Beau, an American Staffordshire who entered Rainbow Heaven recently. Everyone grieves differently, and children are no exception. How can you help a child understand and cope with the loss of your family pet? Each child grieves differently. Some will become quiet and depressed, others will sob almost uncontrollably, and others may not seem to be affected at all. There’s no right way to grieve, and the absence of grief doesn’t mean the child isn’t experiencing sadness. Discussing your loss is very helpful. Children will have many questions. Be honest with them and allow your religious beliefs to frame the conversation. Admit if you don’t have an answer

to their question. Avoid saying “Buddy was ‘put to sleep.’” This concept is difficult for a child to understand, as everyone sleeps daily. Clarify that not all illnesses or diseases end in death. “Buddy had a disease that was really bad and was never going to get better” is more appropriate. Be truthful. Expressing your own grief will reassure your child that sadness is okay. Gently reminding the child their pet isn’t coming back but that the pet loved the child very much can be very reassuring. Taking steps to memorialize the pet by having a private service, writing stories, and drawing pictures of the pet may help in the grief process.

Will You Be a Financial Caregiver Some Day?

P

ERHAPS YOUR parents are getting

older and need help paying their bills or your life changes suddenly with a spouse in a debilitating car accident or suffering a stroke. Whether this financial transition is imminent or somewhere in the unknown future, here are a few tips to consider. The first step is to understand what legal documents are in place – is there a financial power of attorney? This important document names someone (hopefully you!) to act on your loved one’s behalf for such things as paying bills, signing tax returns, and accessing bank and investment accounts. Arguably this document is more important than a will and avoids the expensive proposition of going to court to establish a conservatorship. As a case in point, a client whose husband had an incapacitating stroke could not immediately access his IRA account for living expenses, because she did not have a power of attorney. It created a lengthy, costly delay while a conservatorship was obtained. Also, know where bank and investment accounts are located, including 401(k)s and IRAs. Look for insurance policies for life, home, auto, disability, and long-term care, and make sure none are in danger of lapsing for non-payment of premium. Locate real property titles and car titles. Also, it never hurts to know where birth certificates, marriage certificates, and military records are located, as well as safety deposit boxes and who authorized signers are. If the day comes that you take over as financial caregiver, review recent bank statements and note bills being paid by check, as well as auto drafted, so no important payments are inadvertently missed. Review a recent tax return to understand all sources of income. If you see financial caregiving in your future, give our office a call for a complimentary one-hour consultation, or join us at our next Lunch ‘n Learn to learn more, including: » Common mistakes in titling investment and bank accounts with financial POAs. » Questions to ask to understand your relative’s financial wishes. » A simple method for organizing your loved one’s financial affairs NOW to save you heartache and headache in the future.

Experience the Gent Heating & Cooling Difference S

O JUST HOW many choices do you

have when you require the assistance of a heating and cooling contractor to service your home or business’s HVAC system? More than you might imagine. But if years of service, training, and experience matter – and they should – the field narrows rather quickly. Selecting a qualified heating and cooling contractor is more important than you might imagine, because the level of service they offer can determine the efficiency of your system and, more importantly, the cost of operation. With energy costs skyrocketing, efficiency should be your number one priority. Nearly every heating and cooling contractor can make your HVAC system respond to signals from your thermostat. But sadly, that’s the highest level of service that many customers experience.

Since I first founded Gent Heating & Cooling, I have used my more than 27 years of experience to provide an unprecedented level of customer service that most home and business owners no longer thought existed. Gent Heating & Cooling is your full-service company and sales partner that will maintain your system to operate at its maximum efficiency, provide fast, courteous, and affordable repairs, and replace your existing HVAC when necessary with a new, state-of-the-art, high-efficiency unit that is guaranteed for up to 10 years. In addition to maintaining your system to operate at its peak efficiency, thereby lowering your energy costs, Gent Heating & Cooling is your expert when it’s time to replace your old and worn out HVAC system. When replacing your HVAC system, we offer you a wide variety of cost-effective

choices, including the all-new comfort solutions from Mitsubishi Electric. They offer incredible efficiency, zone control, and air quality. Many homes and businesses with older, less efficient HVAC systems can significantly reduce their energy costs when replacing these units with today’s high-efficiency units. It’s possible to reduce energy costs by up to 50% depending on the age of your existing unit and the new unit you select. If you’re tired of rapidly increasing heating and cooling costs, or if your current HVAC system just isn’t operating as well as it used to, then I invite you to experience the Gent Heating & Cooling difference today.

FTER A LONG WINTER’S season,

the dogwood blooms have finally erupted, heralding in spring. For a few precious weeks, we open up our windows to allow these mild spring breezes to freshen up our homes. But all too quickly temperatures rise, windows close, and air conditioners are turned on. One challenge many of us experience during those periods of time when our homes are “buttoned up” is that dust and allergens are trapped inside. Your home’s HVAC and ceiling fans redistribute these contaminants throughout the entire house, as is evident by the dust on your furniture. No amount of dusting seems to alleviate the sneezing and coughing that many of our family members experience from these contaminants. While there is no way to totally eliminate annoying dust and allergens in your home, there are steps you can take to significantly reduce these airborne contaminants. One sure fire way is to remove dust and allergens from your home’s carpeting and Oriental rugs. While vacuuming helps, your vacuum only removes a small portion of the accumulated contaminants that are trapped deep in the fibers of your home’s carpeting and rugs.

Put Your Garage in Gear

Home

ARE YOU EMBARRASSED

to leave your garage door open very long? Have your cars been displaced from their rightful home to make room for more clutter? If you answered yes, you’re not alone. Of U.S. homes that have two-car garages, 35% can’t park their cars in the garage because of the junk! Garages often become a dumping ground for whatever doesn’t fit into the house. So let’s cut the clutter and talk about getting your garage organized! Plan the Space How are you going to use your garage? If there’s enough space, homeowners are now using the garage for “flex space.” Besides parking cars, people utilize the garage for multiple purposes, including workshops or hobby area, exercise space, or a man cave. People are planning garages so it looks and works like a part of the house rather than an addition. Eliminate the Waste Go through everything in your garage. Place items into three piles on tarps in your driveway: Keep, donate, or toss. Toss or donate outgrown toys, things that are broken beyond repair, outdated chemicals or paint, which may need special disposal, and anything you haven’t used in two years. If you need to store items for a couple of nights, renting a trailer is the least expensive way to store something short term. Maximize the Space When putting items back into the garage, put similar items near each other, making it easier to find things. For example, all the sporting equipment goes in one area and your everyday tools in another. Things you use the most, like bikes or the lawnmower, place close to the garage door. Put seasonal items that you use once a year in hard-toreach places. The most important clutter-busting tip is to keep items off the floor! You’ll free up more room for your car. PremierGarage can help maximize wall and ceiling space by designing and installing cabinets and an organizational system, along with a durable floor that stands up to the heat and friction of tires. Let PremierGarage help you get your garage in gear by taking it from chaos to clutter-free!

pests and can be serious public health threats by transmitting life-threatening diseases such as West Nile virus. Plus now we have to worry about the newly emerged threat of the Zika virus! Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program, offered from May through October, offers a cost-effective way to stop the seven day breeding life cycle of mosquitoes from egg to biting adult. Spraying mosquito repellants for protection can help, but it does not eliminate mosquitoes from your yard! A major benefit of using Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program is that their pest professionals know exactly where to identify mosquito breeding sites. Treatment kills existing mosquitoes plus prevents mosquito immatures and eggs from becoming biting adults. Examples of treatment areas include standing water, waterscapes, and mosquito resting areas like landscaping, vegetation, trees, and shrubs. Dayton’s is also your best resource for eliminating other warm weather pests such as carpenter bees, ants, and wasps. Treating the source of these pests is the key to keep them from coming back. New customers will receive 1) $25 OFF the initial service for Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program with a six month contract from May through October and 2) $25 OFF one treatment for warm weather bugs with an annual pest agreement. Other services provided by Dayton’s include pest control for ladybugs/ bedbugs, convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/ FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing / mitigation.

UT Gardens Plant of the Month:

MALABAR SPINACH

M

Y FAVORITE edible plants are

ones that taste good, have excellent nutritional value, and look attractive for a long period of time. Basella rubra or red-stemmed Malabar spinach fits this description perfectly. As the tender lettuce leaves of springtime begin to turn tough and bitter, the adventurous culinary gardener can turn to this wonderful vine for a steady supply of tasty summer greens. Valued for the brilliant fuchsia color of its leaf stems and veins, as well as its mild flavor, B. rubra is an eye-catching addition to the garden. Both this species and its plainer, not-so-colorful cousin, B. alba, are native to Southeast Asia and therefore flourish in our hot, humid Tennessee summers. These vigorous herbaceous vines can grow up to 35 feet in one season. Though technically a perennial, it is not cold-hardy and is grown as an annual in temperate climates. Malabar spinach will grow well in a relatively wide pH range from 5.5 to 8 and will survive low-moisture and low-nutrient soils, but for the mildest flavor and most rapid growth, the vine should be planted in moist, well-drained soil with high organic matter and typical vegetable garden nutrients. It grows best in full sun but will also tolerate light shade. Easily grown from seed or cutting, Malabar spinach is readily available in many commercial seed catalogs. Seeds may be started indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost and transplanted outside after the weather has settled and nighttime temperatures are consistently above 50°F. While it is resistant to the vast majority of our common pests and diseases, Malabar spinach has shown susceptibility to soil nematodes. If the plant looks nutrient deficient and generally stunted, even though it’s being given ample water and average garden soil, it could very well be suffering from nematode damage. If nematodes are identified, destroy the plant and do not add it to your compost pile. Harvesting young growing tips and leaves frequently will encourage the development of fresh, succulent, new growth and keep the plant size in check. Though commonly called vine spinach, red vine spinach, climbing spinach, creeping Photo by H. Jones, courtesy UTIA

spinach, buffalo spinach, Malabar spinach, and Ceylon spinach, this plant is not truly spinach. Like spinach, the leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, but the leaf has a thicker texture and a less bitter flavor than spinach due to lower levels of oxalic acid. To some, it is an acquired taste, but to most people who enjoy spinach, kale, lettuce, and Swiss chard, it is quite delicious. The young leaves and tender terminal stems are best for cooking. Add to soups and stir-fries in the final stages of preparation to avoid overcooking. Larger leaves and older stems will contain more of the high fiber mucilage, which is the same substance that gives okra its characteristic slime. Later in the season, dark purple berries will appear in abundance. These can be used as a dye for whip cream or yogurt for a fun

addition to a meal. We regularly grow Malabar spinach in the Kitchen Garden at the UT Gardens, Knoxville, and the Gardens in Jackson will be planting it this spring as well. Visit either site anytime this spring or summer to check it out. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu. May 2016 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

Surface Doc OWNERS JOHN AND CHRISTINA

Fitzwilliam have been in the deep cleaning business for almost eight years. In 2008, Christina saw some dramatic videos demonstrating some state-of-the-art cleaning equipment. “At first I didn’t know if what I was seeing was real or if they had somehow doctored the footage,” she said. “The results were so dramatic, I was honestly skeptical. When John got home that night, we watched in awe one video clip after another. We saw tile and grout, concrete, stone, and most every surface we could think of become almost spotless as this mysterious ‘blue tool’ was passed over it.” A few days later they traveled to Arizona to see the equipment first hand. “When we saw in person what we had seen on the videos, we were instantly sold,” said Christina. “Surface Doc was born the following week.” Eight years later, Surface Doc is going strong. “Those first few months we would pray the phone would ring,” said Christina. “Now the calls come in constantly.”

CO-OWNER

John Fitzwilliam Being the only deep-cleaning company in the Knoxville area with this equipment has given them a niche they are grateful for. In those early years, John focused mainly on restaurants. He loved the challenge of transforming a grimy, greasy, blackened kitchen floor into a floor that looked brand new. Often, after cleaning a business, the owner would invite John to his home where he and his crew would not only detail the kitchen floors, but the rest of the home and the outdoor living areas as well. “I finally realized that there was so much I do outside that I hadn’t originally considered,” said John. “Tile and grout is our specialty, but I have to say that concrete has always been our biggest WOW factor. Unlike

countertops

pressure washing, which pits your surfaces and leaves streak marks, our equipment is self-contained to apply even pressure across the surface (inside and outside the home), which prevents any sort of damage. We add high heat when needed and a 15-pound vacuum to eliminate any mess. The difference really is night and day!” Give John a call today and schedule your free, no-obligation test cleaning, or visit Surface Doc online at www.SurfaceDoc. com and check out some of their before and after photos.

Asking the Right Price

Home

E

STABLISHING THE accurate value

of a home is crucial. There’s an art to pricing a home, and mistakes can be costly. Research shows that the best price point is close to market value. Overprice and your house may linger on the market until it becomes a “stale” listing with no lookers, much less offers. Price too low, of course, and you may lose out on potential profits. In order to set the right price, you will need to know about comparable sales, available inventory, and trends. Realtors offer expertise in a variety of areas, including sales, market conditions, contracts, and the ins and outs of marketing and negotiating. About 90% of today’s buyers purchase a home through a real estate agent or broker. Expect your agent to prepare a Comparable Market Analysis, or CMA, that suggests an appropriate price or price range for your home. This report evaluates your house in comparison to similar local properties that have recently sold, as well as active listings, expired listings, and pending sales. Along with helping set the price, an agent can map out a marketing plan designed to bring the highest possible offer for your home. Be wary of online estimates of a home’s market value, which may be significantly above or below true market value. A wealth of data is available, but there is no substitute for the informed, in-person judgment of a professional real estate agent. As one major real estate search portal states, its estimate “should not be used for pricing a home.” About Homes & Land Media Homes & Land is a leading integrated real estate media franchise founded in 1983 by Russ and Cheryl Haskins. Family owned and operated, the Haskins family serves real estate agents across East and Middle Tennessee from their Farragut office at 12805 Kingston Pike. You can subscribe to magazines, search for area properties, and find top agents at HomesAndLand.com.

Five Great Reasons to Install Retractable Screens on Your Home This Spring 1. Let in fresh air and keep out insects. As summer approaches, we look forward to spending more time on our patios and porches. Yet with warm weather comes bugs, making it often difficult to stay outside in comfort. Installing retractable screens on your home allows you to open up your living space without the nuisance of insects. Whether you need to screen your doors, windows, patios, or lanais, there’s a retractable screen solution that fits your needs. 2. Retract your screen for an unobstructed view. Retractable screens allow you to enjoy unimpaired views when the screens are retracted and let in fresh air without worrying about annoying insects when screens are in place. Large motorized screens can blend form, function, and comfort. They can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying hidden when fully retracted. They don’t diminish your views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. 3. Preserve the look and design of your doorway. Homeowners are abandoning the idea of conventional fixed screens and adopting retractable screens as the ideal solution. Retractable door screens provide the utility of a conventional insect screen without the unsightly results of conventional door screens, making it a perfect addition for any home. 4. Let more natural daylight into your home when desired. Retractable screens are the versatile and cost-effective choice for creating a more comfortable living environment while reducing energy waste. For example, installing Phantom’s fully retractable screens in the windows on the west side of a home allows homeowners to block the hot afternoon sun in the warmer months or fully retract the screens to gain the maximum warming effects of the sun in the cooler months. 5. Enjoy the convenience of a professional design and installation. Homeowners often struggle to find screen solutions that match the design and size requirements of the openings they want to screen. For example, it can be difficult to install screens on large openings like a patio or balcony, especially if you’re considering recessed or motorized options. Professional installers eliminate these concerns by providing a screen solution that’s specific to your needs. To discover all the possibilities retractable screens can offer you and your family, contact me today.

“Dial It Up” at Consign To Design

W

HEN DAVID and I first launched

Consign To Design in a 4,000 square foot retail space in Farragut, we never imagined that less than five years later we would relocate into a new 27,000+ square foot retail showcase in the Market Place Shopping Center on Kingston Pike, just west of Cedar Bluff. There are a variety of reasons for our success, but first and foremost, it’s been the support and encouragement of customers like you. Without you, success would have been impossible. To you, we extend our most heartfelt appreciation. I believe another reason for our success resulted from the recession. This challenging period of time has actually been a blessing in many ways. Many of us have taken pause to consider what is truly important in our lives, causing us to realign our priorities. For many of us, we have placed a higher priority on both family and relationships while we reconsider our financial priorities at the same time. Realigning our financial priorities doesn’t mean that we have to dial back our goals, but it does mean 46

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2016

that we have to be smarter about how we spend and invest. Consign To Design is sort of in that “sweet spot,” where people who wish to update their homes can do so for far less than they might have imagined and without sacrificing quality. That doesn’t mean that you have to downsize your dreams, but rather that you become a far wiser consumer. People all throughout the Greater Knoxville area are discovering the Consign To Design experience, where you can purchase “like new” furniture, décor, art, and Oriental and area rugs from America’s finest brand name manufacturers, all at up to 70% off their original retail prices. So if you thought that your new norm was to “dial it down,” we would like to invite you to “dial it up” and save at Consign To Design.

May in the Garden WOW,

SPRING has been a rollercoaster! Record high temperatures in March and cold in April caused some of you to jump the gun on planting and then regret it. You can put that behind you now, because it’s May. You’re safe to plant, unless Mother Nature decides to play a really mean trick on us. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that she’s in a good mood this year! Here are the things you need to take care of first: » Take a walk around your yard. Admire everything that’s pretty, and pay attention to the areas that may need a little help. Did anything not make it through the winter? Are there things that have winter damage from that last freeze in April? Are there plants that need to be pruned, moved, or divided? Are there signs of insects or fungus? Make a list of all the projects you need to work on. » Let’s talk dirt for a bit. How is yours? Yes, I know you have clay, but have you amended it? Clay does have some

good qualities, one of which is that it’s easily amendable. That means that you can mix topsoil and compost or rotted manure with it, and it will hold the nutrients. Please don’t mix sand with your clay! Sand + clay = brick! » May means that you’re free to plant your little heart out. Annuals, perennials, vegetables, and herbs are all ready to go into the ground. Trees and shrubs can also still be planted. Even those plants that must have warm soil to thrive (tomatoes, peppers, basil, grasses, and crepe myrtles) can be planted now. You can also sow seeds of fast growing annuals and vegetables such as sunflowers, melons, and squash. Be aware that if the spring rains stop or fail to materialize, you’ll need to drag out your hose a bit sooner than you may have planned. » If all your spring blooming shrubs have finished blooming, you can do some shaping on any that have gotten overgrown or leggy. They’re resting now before they start setting bud for next

year. Remember the “1/3 rule,” which says that removing more than 1/3 of a plant’s size causes tremendous stress to that plant and may lead to its demise. You can also take off broken or damaged branches from any tree or shrub. You can prune out dead sections any time, but don’t write things off prematurely! If there is flexibility in the branches, there is life. Call or send us an email if you have questions. » How are your perennials doing? Are they coming up nicely, or are they showing signs that they need attention? Is the center dying out of clumps? Have the blooms decreased in size or quantity? After three to five years, many perennials like to be divided. You can also feed them with a good organic or slow release fertilizer. Please remember that “perennial” doesn’t mean “forever!” Some may indeed live for decades, but others will need to be replaced after a few years. » Our mild winter has led to an unfortunate abundance of insects. Keep your eyes open so you can stop them before you have an infestation. Not all insects are bad! I beg you to make sure that the insects you have are actually hurting your plants BEFORE you decided to kill them all. Our pollinators are struggling due to many factors, one of which is the overuse of insecticides. Always start with the least toxic products first. » Let’s talk about fertilizer. Do you have to use it? Yes and no. There are some plants that will have to be fertilized. Annuals, flowering tropicals, vegetables, and anything in a container will need to be fed on a regular basis. They simply use up all the nutrients in the soil very quickly. The no is for trees, shrubs, and perennials IF they are in good, well amended soil. Think of fertilizer as a vitamin supplement for your plants. Just as you (theoretically) don’t need to take vitamins if you have a healthy diet, your plants don’t need supplements if their soil is good. If not, however, then a good organic or slow release product will be appreciated. » Let me put in a word for the birds and bees. I encourage every one of you to do something in your yard this year to help out these little creatures. Plant nectar and/or pollen producing flowers. Add a birdhouse, a bee house, or a butterfly house. Add a bird feeder or a birdbath, or both! We need the birds and the bees. Our own survival depends on them. We’re getting shipments almost daily, so I encourage you to stop by frequently. Let us help you make your yard and garden beautiful!

N ADDITION to featuring thousands

of square feet of pre-owned and gently used furniture, home décor, and art items from area lake and golf front communities – including Tellico Village and Rarity Bay – at up to 90% off their original retail prices, Premiere Consignment also offers their clients access to the world’s largest auction. Powered by eBay, Premiere Consignment now provides you with the opportunity to take full advantage of this selling phenomenon. “The key to success in selling many of your household items at the highest price available is to target a marketplace with the largest number of potential buyers,” said Premiere Consignment co-owner, Aaron Hunt. “With the power of eBay’s millions of buyers, products can often sell much faster and often at a higher price than you might experience under normal circumstances using just a consignment shop or newspaper classifieds.” Premiere Consignment has recently made a significant investment in photographic and lighting equipment, software and computer hardware, and a packing station designed to make the power of eBay available to you. Here’s how it works: 1. Items are evaluated for acceptance at our intake area located at Premiere Consignment. 2. Assignment of tracking number to accept items. 3. Accepted items are professionally photographed. 4. Items’ descriptions and photographs are entered onto the eBay website. 5. As items are sold, they are carefully packed and shipped to the winning bidder. “The key to success on eBay is to present your item in as professional a manner as possible,” said Aaron. “That’s why professional quality photos and well-written descriptions are essential.” Initially, Premiere Consignment will focus primarily on china, crystal, and collectibles, expanding their selection of offerings in the future. “The other important feature we offer our customers is our ratings,” said Aaron. “Ratings are very important to eBay buyers. Because of the quality of items we sell on eBay, we offer potential buyers the peace of mind that comes from selecting a seller with an established track record. Buyers are often reluctant to buy from a seller with no track record or a limited record.” To learn how to take advantage of a world of opportunity to sell many of your unused household items through Premiere Consignment, powered by eBay, call 865-458-9721 today.

Vestival: South Knoxville’s Art & Heritage Festival May 7 from 11 am to 7pm • Candoro Arts & Heritage Center

V

ESTAL IS THE NAME of the

small Knoxville neighborhood surrounding the historic Candoro Marble Building. Every year, on Mother’s Day weekend, everyone comes together to celebrate “Vestival,” which takes place on the grounds of the historic 1923 building, which is made of marble. The event was started in 2001 as a way to celebrate and honor the rich heritage of Vestal and surrounding communities, which was home to the marble industry, as well as lumber and textile industries, a fertilizer plant, and home to many farmers, craftsmen, and musicians. Vestival sets itself apart as “not your typical event.” Families with children really appreciate the imaginative children’s activities. Foodies love the fresh and local food offerings. The music? Outstanding. Typically about a dozen bands play throughout the day on three stages. From interactive art project booths to quality crafts for sale, it is a celebration enjoyed by all generations. We will be weaving stories, photos, and artifacts into the grounds to help ensure that the public memory of Vestal and South Knoxville lives on. In addition, there will be live music

all day, puppets, acrobats, magic, a Mother’s Day brunch, children’s activities, local craft and food vendors, hand-skill demonstrations (blacksmithing, woolspinning, pottery, etc.), dancing, art exhibits, an old-fashioned cake walk, and much more! Join us for an extra special year where we honor and celebrate the 225th Anniversary of Knoxville!

Vestival takes place on the grounds of the historic Candoro Marble Building, a beautiful building that began as the office and showroom for Candoro Marble Co. and now serves as home for Candoro Arts & Heritage Center, a nonprofit that serves as a gathering place. Everyone comes together to celebrate with art and history. Candoro celebrates Knoxville’s legacy in the marble industry. The event is free, but there is a suggested $5 per person donation at the gate. All donations go to the Candoro Arts & Heritage Center. For more information, call 865-307-0800 or visit www. candoromarble.org.

About Marble Springs State Historic Site Marble Springs State Historic Site is the last remaining home of John Sevier. Born in Virginia in 1745, Sevier made a name for himself as a Revolutionary War Hero during the Battle of Kings Mountain (1780), a key player and Governor of the short-lived State of Franklin (1784-1788), and ultimately was elected to serve as the first Governor of the State of Tennessee (1796). While visiting Marble Springs, you will have the opportunity to tour several historic structures that are designed to represent various aspects of Sevier’s life and times. These structures include the Tavern, Loom House, Smoke House, Spring House, and the John Sevier Cabin and detached kitchen.

VERY SONGWRITER

dreams of writing just one song that everyone knows and can sing – or, at the very least, hum. To be able to write two, well, that would be the rarified air segment of the songwriter hierarchy. More than that and you know that you’ve accomplished more than most songwriting mortals. You’re in an exclusive club that few belong to. Such is the case with Jack Tempchin. You may not have heard his name, but you have most certainly heard many of the songs he’s written or co-written. Songs like “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Already Gone,” “The Girl from Yesterday,” “Somebody,” and “It’s Your World Now” by the Eagles. Of course you’ve had to have heard “Swayin’ to the Music (Slow Dancin’)” by Johnny Rivers. Perhaps you’re familiar with the late Glenn Frey’s hits, “The One You Love,” “You Belong to the City,” “Smuggler’s Blues,” “True Love,” or “I Found Somebody.” If so, you now know that those, too, were co-written by Tempchin. Those are the biggies. Tempchin has also written songs recorded by George Jones, Glen Campbell, Emmylou Harris and Randy Meisner, Sammy Kershaw, Patty Loveless, Tanya Tucker, and many, many others. If it were me who had a hand in all of those great songs, I’d be tempted to rest on my laurels and feel that I have nothing left to write or give. But not Jack Tempchin. He recently released a new CD entitled “Learning to Dance.” Not only does it show that he has a lot of great music still inside of him, but it’s also musical foretaste of more great music to come. Before the passing of his good friend Glenn Frey, I had the privilege of chatting with Tempchin by phone about his EP “Room to Run,” which was a teaser before “Dance” was released. He started off sharing about the EP and how it was different to record than his previous albums. “I have put five or six of my own albums out,” he said. “Since the Eagles got back together in ’94, and I stopped doing the Glenn Frey albums, I put out my own albums. But I haven’t had a record deal. This is my first record deal since I was signed with Clive Davis and Arista Records. The last album was about three years ago. “If I hadn’t had a record deal, I might not have made another record. These songs would just languish away in a drawer, and no one would ever hear them. I’m fortunate that I’m a legacy artist who’s had a bunch of hits. That’s wonderful, and I’ve had a great life in music. I feel like I’m on fire with songs. I’m still there, and I still love this whole thing. Like everybody in my position, I would like people to enjoy what I’m doing now. I don’t want to make a record of my hits, because I didn’t make those original records anyway. I’m not going to be able to beat them, and I love them the way they are. 56

Jack Tempchin

“I’m trying to still be an artist, I guess. I go in my backyard with my producer, and I dig old songs out of my catalog. Or I get a song I started a few years ago, and I finish it. Or I write a brand new song. Then I get to record it, and put it out. Man, that’s all I care about. I’m just looking for people to start going, ‘Hey, I’m enjoying what you’re doing.’ That’ll complete the circle for me. “The album is called ‘Learning to Dance.’ The four songs on the EP are the songs I left off the album. The record label decided they liked them, and they put them out as a four song EP. It’s all love songs. It moves through the early, euphoric stages of love, to the more confusing parts, to looking back on love. It all fell into a theme, like love through the years.

I picked those songs and left the others off, because they didn’t fit the theme.” In January of this year, Glenn Frey passed away. Tempchin has chosen to limit his comments about his late, great friend to these few words: “Glenn and I wrote songs together for 14 years while the Eagles were apart. I will be singing those songs for the rest of my life and always be thinking of all the fun times we had writing them and living our dreams. And I will think of my great friend, a truly ‘stand up guy’ who kept his promises to others and to himself, the strongest minded and the funniest person I ever knew. I will miss him every day.” You can read the extended version of this interview at www.boomerocity.com. Photo by Joel Piper

AMED FOR King Louis XVI of

France in appreciation for his assistance during the Revolutionary War, Louisville was founded by George Rogers Clark in 1778. While its initial growth was slow, the advent of the steamboat in the early 1800s sparked booming industrial development. By 1830, Louisville had secured its place as the largest city in Kentucky. During the Civil War, Louisville was an important Union base of operations and a major military supply center. In the postwar era, the city emerged even more prosperous than before, with merchant princes and manufacturers shaping the new economy. Owing to its strategic location at the Falls of the Ohio, Louisville was a major commercial center. River transportation was supplemented by the construction of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, which was chartered in 1850 and operated more than 1,800 miles of line in the state by 1920. Joseph E. Seagram and Sons opened the world’s largest distillery in Louisville following the repeal of prohibition. Thanks to companies such as Dupont, the city became the world’s largest producer of synthetic rubber during World War II. Louisville was also a city of firsts. In the reform-minded progressive era of the 1880s, the city was the first in the nation to introduce the secret ballot, significantly reducing voter fraud. It was the first city in Kentucky to adopt zoning and planning measures to control and shape urban growth. Home to the first bridge designed exclusively for motor vehicles to cross the Ohio River, Louisville was also the birthplace of Mary Millicent Miller, the first woman in the United States to receive a steamboat master’s license. The city has been home to a number of men and women who changed the face of American history. President Zachary Taylor was reared in surrounding Jefferson County, and two U.S. Supreme Court Justices – including Louis D. Brandeis, the first Jewish Justice – were from the city proper. John James Audubon was a local shopkeeper in the early years of his career, drawing birds in his spare time. Second Lt. F. Scott Fitzgerald, stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor during World War I, was frequently present at the bar in the famous Seelbach Hotel, immortalized in the novel The Great Gatsby. Muhammad Ali, perhaps the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, was born in Louisville and won six Golden Glove tournaments in Kentucky.

Airport Authority (McGhee Tyson Airport) and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville are pleased to present “Arts in the Airport,” a new exhibition featuring selected artwork from 40 artists in the East Tennessee region. “Arts in the Airport” was developed to allow regional artists to compete and display work in the most visited site in the area. The current exhibition features works celebrating “The Smoky Mountain Air Show” and the City of Knoxville’s 225th Anniversary. The contemporary 2- and 3-dimensional artwork is exhibited in the secured area behind McGhee Tyson Airport’s security gate checkpoint through September 21, 2016. Juror Terri Jordan of the Customs House Museum in Clarksville provided this statement about the exhibition: “I first look for works that have a pleasing composition that draw me in. I then look at technique and if there is a sense of flow or movement. I feel that my selections are strong representations to their mediums. It was a pleasure to be able to see the show installed and how well the themes fit together. East Tennessee has some very talented artists.” The following artists’ works are on display: Ann Allison-Cote, Kate Aubrey, Booder Barnes, Scott Bennett, Mike C. Mountain Laurel Fest Celebrates Wartburg’s Historical, Cultural Past

T

HIS TIME of year visitors to

Morgan County behold one of nature’s most stunning floral displays. Lush thickets of mountain laurel line ridge tops and blanket entire hillsides, and in late May, the plants erupt with soft-ball sized clusters of delicate white blossoms tinged in pink. Fittingly, Morgan County and its main hub, Wartburg, have adopted the flowering shrub as the theme for the annual Mountain Laurel Festival on May 21 from 10 am to 4 pm. The event celebrates the community’s historical, cultural, and recreational riches and features music, food, crafts, antique cars, guided hikes, and tours of Wartburg’s historic structures. And there’s much to celebrate. Ask Knoxville’s rock climbers, kayakers, and hikers where they spend their free time, and many will point 45 miles west, to Morgan County, situated atop the Cumberland Plateau. The county comprises all or parts of Big South Fork River and Recreation Area, Obed Wild and Scenic River, Catoosa Wildlife Management Area, Lone Mountain State Forest, the Cumberland Trail State Park, and Frozen Head State Park. But Morgan County also possesses numerous historical resources, including Victorian-era Rugby, the preserved British community established in 1880 and home to Tennessee’s oldest surviving public library. But 27 miles to the south lies Wartburg, the county seat, whose historical roots reach back farther still. In the 1840s, as Germans and their Swiss neighbors faced political and economic hardship, New York-based developer, George Gerding, enticed them to Tennessee through offers of affordable land and abundant natural resources. Gerding ’s East Tennessee Colonization Company purchased 170,000 acres on the Cumberland Plateau, including what would become the village of Wartburg, named for Wartburg Castle, built in central Germany in 1067. To American ears, the town bears an unusual name, but to Germans, Wartburg (in German, pronounced with an initial V rather than W) had the ring – and familiar forested surroundings – of home. Between 1845 and 1860, about 1,000 Germans and Swiss set down roots in Wartburg and its immediate environs. Wartburg boasted the requisite trades for sustaining a community: Carpenters, merchants, millers, farmers, butchers, bakers, and blacksmiths. But the town also attracted a complement of educated professionals, including architects, musicians, physicians, 62

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE May 2016

and clergymen. The reality of life in Wa r t b u r g d i d n ’ t l i v e up to Gerding ’s vision. Pa r t i c u l a r l y t r o u b l e some were the region’s mountainous topography, marginal soils, and primitive roads. By 1850, the community was in decline. Wartburg’s oldest surviving structure – a home built by piano maker Charles Waltersdorf – dates to 1855 and waning years of the German-Swiss settlement. The departure of many European residents marked the close of Wartburg’s first act, but during the coming years, those who subsequently arrived – along with those who remained – made peace with the rugged terrain and learned to raise crops and livestock that thrive here. Meanwhile, the community’s roads improved, and the railroad arrived in 1880, facilitating the free flow of goods to markets in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Cincinnati. Numerous historic structures preserve Wartburg ’s past and tell the story of an adaptive community determined to thrive in a region that still bears much of its elemental beauty and wildness, and several of the buildings are open to the public. The Wartburg Revitalization Committee is at work to preserve and renovate the town’s historic central business district. Wartburg ’s old jail, built in 1930, now houses the Morgan County Archives and Family Heritage Center. The building underwent renovation in 2012, but parts of the interior retain the original cells that housed lawbreakers for nearly 80 years. The entryway features a 1930s-era admonishment that merges well-placed intentions with a misplaced apostrophe: “It Does’nt Pay to Do Wrong.” Wartburg had its prisoners, but it also

had its pious churchgoers. The folk-Victorian style Presbyterian Church has changed little since it first welcomed congregants in 1883. It was added to the National Register in 2012. Wa r t b u rg C i t y Ha l l began life as Citizens Bank and Trust in 1923 and was the town’s first building to feature central heating. Customers stored houseplants there to survive the winter freeze. The American Legion Hall, built in 1946 and home of American Legion Post 149, underwent a major renovation in 2011. The Tennessee Mountain Laurel Festival will take place at what remains Morgan County’s most defining historic structure, the iconic and recently renovated courthouse, built in 1904. The tower houses a 900-pound bell and four-sided clock with four-foot hands. The only other clock of its kind resides in the Smithsonian. For more information on the festival, visit www.tennesseemountainlaurelfestival.com. For more information on Morgan County, visit www.morgancountychamber.com.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

How to Become Financially Independent

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN

I

READ a life-changing

book many years ago called “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George S. Clason. This bestselling book, written in 1926, is as relevant today as John Fawaz CERTIFIED it was when it was first written FINANCIAL and advances the key concept of PLANNER™ “Paying Yourself First.” For most of us, our living expenses always seem to rise up to our income. Whether you earn $50,000 or $200,000 annually, most people live paycheck to paycheck. By paying yourself first, you can avoid this dilemma. If you earn $1,000 per pay period, save $100 and live on the remaining $900. By following this simple rule on investing, and by beginning to invest early in life and consistently, you can create a substantial nest egg for your retirement. Another great read by David Bach called “The Latte Factor” recommends that living on one less latte per day can help you achieve financial independence. His point is that you only need to save $5 to $10 a day to become independent. Create a budget and discover where you can eliminate wasting money. There are some great apps – and yes, they’re free – that you can download on your phone that can make budgeting easy and fun. Delaying or deferring impor ta nt buying decisions for a week, a month, or longer is also great advice. By delaying or deferring your decision, you can avoid impulse buying. You’re also more apt to discover a better deal or price. Impulse buying is one of the major reasons people retire poor. Now ’s the time to get sta r ted. Open a n investment account today, even if your finances are limited. Begin with 1% of your earnings and work on a goal to grow that 1% to 10-15%. Also, here’s one more strategy in achieving financial independence: Save half of all of your pay increases. Automatic deductions are a great way of removing the temptation to spend that new raise. Finally, take full advantage of your employer’s 401k matching program. No matter where you are in your goal of achieving financial independence in your life, act as if your retirement depends upon it, because it does.

VALARIE CAGLE

always knew she wanted to write for a living – first as a journalism major, then as a technical writer – but teaching English is where her passion ultimately took her. It’s paid off, as she’s been named Knox County’s High School Teacher of the Year. “For me, teaching is a calling not unlike the same calling I felt to be a mother,” said Valarie, who teaches at Farragut High School. “Some days teaching, like parenting, can feel like a thankless job, so to be honored in this way gives me a peaceful reminder that I’m doing meaningful work and following my calling.” Valarie is a native Knoxvillian who graduated from Karns High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English, with a concentration in technical writing, from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She worked for three years as a technical writer in Oak Ridge before returning to UTK for her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. It was during her time as a technical writer that she realized where she could make a difference. “Literature is a wonderful vehicle for teaching writing, but it’s not the only one,” she said. “Educators have now recognized that writing and reading skills must be part of all

disciplines. While I had considered teaching, I realized that I wanted to return to school to become an English teacher and help students become more effective communicators regardless of what career they pursue.” Valarie teaches all grades – freshmen and seniors are her favorites; she calls them her “bookends” – and also serves as department chair. “Throughout the day, I enjoy impromptu collaboration in the teacher workroom and lunchroom,” she said. “I’m blessed to work with amazing colleagues who are constantly learning, refining, and sharing expertise. We’re a family, just as I feel my classes become a learning family and often teach me as much as I teach them. For me, the typical

day is a hectic but exciting day of reciprocal learning!” Teaching is an intense job, but Valarie enjoys the challenge. “I’m required to play many roles in my classroom, from instructor and facilitator to coach and learner,” she said. “I always have a clear plan, but I also love that a lesson can unfold in ways I can’t anticipate. In those ‘teachable moments,’ the real learning occurs for my students and also for me. I enjoy the autonomy of my classroom but also the support I feel from my fellow English teachers and our faculty.” Valarie is humbled to be named Teacher of the Year. “When former students let me know that they’re doing well in their lives after my class and have learned to love words, literature, and writing as much as I do in the process, that’s the best reward and compliment I could ever receive,” she said.

Why Warren Buffett Keeps Getting It Right W HY IS IT THAT investors

everywhere hold this 85-yearold business magnate, investor, and philanthropist, with an estimated net worth of more than $66 billion, in such high esteem? Certainly his net worth speaks volumes, but it is much more than that. People respect his humility and his rather simplistic view of today’s financial marketplace. His personal perspective on investing differs markedly from the so-called experts armed with their reams of charts, graphs, and historical data. One characteristic of Warren Buffett that small business owners could and should embrace is his long-term view on investing. So long-term, in fact, that many of the gains that will be earned from his investments that he is making today won’t be realized for decades, long after he’s gone. Mr. Buffett’s long-term view on investing appears to be devoid of emotions and seems

One characteristic of Warren Buffett that small business owners could and should embrace is his long-term view on investing.

to de-emphasize many geo-political events that cause others to take pause. As small business owners, it’s not always easy to ignore our emotions or local, national, and world events. One of the unique advantages of being “small” is our ability to be agile. Unfortunately, this same agility allows us to become somewhat of an “idea of the week club,” where we’re constantly changing gears, which can be truly detrimental to our long-term success.

Business

Although Warren Buffett is 20 years my senior, my age provides me with many of the same insights that most older Americans share. I’ve experienced 16 presidential races, 33 congressional elections, a half a dozen wars, and a host of international crises. Although these events were all portrayed as life-changing, and even apocalyptic, somehow we’ve just seemed to advance on despite these feelings of deep despair that we all experience in our lives. Your life will be filled with both success and adversity, but you and your small business will enjoy far greater prosperity if you will embrace Warren Buffett’s long-term perspective and avoid all of the “theatre” that seems to surround all of our lives.

Minutes and Milestones THERE

C O U L D B E decades between short minutes and major milestones. Day-to-day activities are done by the minute; the daily grind and to-do’s that can seem mundane and repetitive. Milestones are life events, the much more defining moments etched in the “special memories” category. The question is, is there a difference? If we’re not careful, we fail to realize that in every minute, there’s the making of a milestone. This year our youngest child graduates from high school. Yes, a major milestone. There will be parties, pictures, gifts, and life plans to ponder as he takes that giant leap into manhood. He’ll begin college and start his life of independence away from home-cooked meals and his parents watching the clock late at night making sure he gets home safely. Suddenly all those minutes matter as the milestone is reached. Every sleepless night watching a high fever, every rainy baseball game, the skinned knees, doctor visits, even the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with just the right amount of honey. As we cherish each step in his journey to

adulthood, we pray that all of those minutes – every single one of them – mattered. Also, this year I celebrate the oneyear anniversary of a new business: The publisher of a Christian magazine. Many said we wouldn’t succeed – “print is dead; people won’t support it; Christianity is on the decline.” Yet with God’s help, we got through that anniversary milestone. Turns out print is not dead, people supported us, and Christianity is a huge niche market where people are hungry to get involved. Though a first anniversary is a major milestone, I’ll never forget what it took to step out and finally become a creative entrepreneur. It’s easy to recall every phone call to share my vision with a prospect. Each ad sold, every encouraging word, and the many small steps that led to the next day when it started all over again. There were more calls, more meetings, and plenty of rejection, but there was just enough success to keep going. Those minutes became milestones, because they fueled the passion to go at it again the next day.

Minutes are miniature milestones. Not one can be wasted. Each one is a small investment but a large deposit in what is most important in our lives – the relationships that we cherish. As I think back over the milestones of raising children and starting a business, I think back with a heart filled with gratitude. Though admittedly, I fight the temptation to second guess myself. Did we get it right? Did I say the right things to my children? Do I have a bold enough business plan? Is my team ready for expansion? Is my son ready for college? Is my daughter making the right adult friends? Time will tell. As an optimist, I have hope in a bright future, because as long as I have minutes, I’ll be looking for milestones. Family Life

When is the Right Time to Have a Baby?

THERE IS NO PERFECT, textbook

answer to the question “when is the right time to have a baby?” Some people will go as far to say that there never is a right time – and if you wait for the right time to come along, you’ll never have a baby. Choosing to start a family is an intensely personal decision. However, here are a few questions to help you gauge your readiness. The answers to these questions should help guide you on whether now is the right time to start having a family or if you should wait. Do you want a baby for the right reasons? Take a good long look at yourself to determine where the longing to have a baby comes from. » Do you want to have a baby because your parents are pushing you for a grandchild? » Do you want to have a baby because many of your friends are already parents or they are pregnant? » Do you want to have a baby because you are lonely?

» Do you want to have a baby to help your marriage? » Maybe you want to have a baby because you thought you would already have a family at this age? If you want to have a baby for one of these reasons, or others like them, you probably don’t want to have a baby for the “right” reasons. You should only make the decision to become a parent because you are ready to nurture, care for, and love a new human being. Is your partner ready to be a parent? If you are ready to be a parent and your partner isn’t there yet, explore what is holding him/her back. It could be that he/she is reflecting back to his/her own childhood, he/she may have financial concerns, or he/ she may be anxious about how a baby will change your relationship. Be sensitive to the concerns of your partner. Talk about the concerns together. Perhaps with time they can be resolved. Is your relationship ready for a baby? One of the biggest questions you should ask

yourself before you plan to have a baby is if your relationship is ready for a baby. » Do you and your partner view having a baby as an extension and growth of your love and your partnership, or do you view having a baby as something that will take away from the relationship? » Do you have the foundation beneath you as a couple that will get you through the ups and downs of not just being lovers, but learning how to be parents to a third person? » Are you both willing to sacrifice personal time and relationship time to care for a baby’s needs? The answers to these types of questions can help you determine if your relationship is ready for a baby. Wendy Jackson is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Showing Our Children Respect I THINK one of the biggest mistakes

parents make regarding their children is the manner in which they speak to them. I hear much too often parents speaking to their children with a demeaning tone, yelling, extreme sarcasm, and in other disrespectful ways. Parents, this is wrong. Not only is it wrong, but if we continue to do such, we will slowly but surely lose our children’s respect, and then “amen” to our ability to parent successfully. For some reason, many adults think that they have a license to speak to children in a derogatory tone simply because they are children. Here’s what I know. I know that the people that we should show the greatest care with, that we should speak the most respectful to, that we should be the most gentle with, are within the walls of our homes. We cannot get 66

from our children what we are not willing to give to them. If we want our children to honor us, then we must honor them. Of course there are times that we must correct our children, but it is during these times that we should be the most careful with our speech. Correcting is supposed to be an act of love, not an act of anger. When we correct our children, they should be able to feel and see that we are acting out of love and concern for them, even if they disagree with our decision. Parents, please be careful. We are not guaranteed a positive relationship with our children when they become adults. So many adults that I meet today have difficult relationships with their parents as adults, and it most often stems from their childhood and how their parents treated them. We do not have a license to demean, embarrass, humiliate, or

scream at our children. These actions slowly but surely take a piece of our children’s “heart” away and slowly but surely deteriorate the amount of respect they have for us. Please reevaluate the manner in which you speak to your children. Ladies and gentlemen strive to treat everyone with the utmost respect and honor, regardless of their age, size, or mental ability. We have a few spaces left in our summer manner’s camps this summer. To register your children, visit www.TheEtiquetteFactory.com.

A-B-C-D-Es of Skin Cancer

M

AY IS MELANOMA

awareness month. Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in America today. While melanoma only affects approximately 5% of people diagnosed with skin cancer, it is attributed to more than 75% of all skin cancer deaths. Studies have shown that almost half of fair-skinned Americans that reach the age of 65 will deal with at least one incident of skin cancer. The numbers are rising due in large part to increased ultraviolet light exposure. This exposure is often the result of improper sunscreen use, as well as tanning beds. Over the course of time, ultraviolet light exposure can result in skin cancer. Additionally, nothing contributes to the appearance of aging more than ultraviolet light exposure. Proper skin care is the key to maintaining beautiful, healthy skin. The most effective way to monitor for melanoma is to be very familiar with the moles on your body. Patients should monitor anything unusual that happens with regular, everyday moles. At Southeastern Dermatology, my staff and I often educate patients with the A-B-C-D-Es of skin cancer. A: Asymmetry The healthy, benign moles and freckles you see during your exam are mostly symmetrical. That means that if you draw a line down the middle, both halves are similar in size and shape. If you spot a mole that has irregular halves, this could be an early sign of melanoma. B: Borders In addition to its symmetrical shape, a healthy mole has even, smooth, and clearly defined borders. Melanomas, on the other hand, often have irregular borders. The edges of the lesion may be jagged or otherwise irregular or can look like a mole shifted, leaving a trail behind. Any unusually shaped mole or spot should be examined by a dermatologist.

C: Color Harmless moles and freckles are usually all one color – most commonly a single shade of brown depending on your skin tone. Melanomas can be splotchy in color. Cancers can come in a rainbow of hues, including varying shades of brown, black, tan, red, white, or even blue. D: Diameter When performing your self-exam, keep your eyes peeled for any moles or spots bigger than a pencil eraser in diameter. Most moles are usually a few millimeters at most in size; larger moles have a greater chance of being malignant. Also, look out for moles that are growing or changing in diameter, as this growth can signal unhealthy changes, too. E: Evolving For the most part, harmless moles stay the same over time. They don’t grow, move, or change in color. In fact, any changes, including those in size, color, shape, or height, should be reported to your doctor. Moles that develop new symptoms, including itching, bleeding, or crusting over, can also signify dangerous changes. In addition to monthly self-checks with the A-B-C-D-Es in mind, it’s important to make sure your doctor performs a thorough skin examination to check for potential changes at least annually. Talk to me or any member of my staff today to make sure you’re doing everything you can to prevent skin cancer and catch changes early.
