Greatness Fitness Where Your Journey to Achieve Your Personal Best Begins

W

HEN THEN 16-year-

old Bassamba Sao left his native Mali in West Africa with a meager $427 in his pocket, destined for the United States, little could he imagine the journey that awaited him. Mali, where approximately half the population subsists on less than $1.25 per day, was an unlikely backdrop for young Bassamba, whose passion it was to pursue a career in the NBA. He possessed the required height to succeed in basketball and, strangely enough, he also possessed the dream and the desire to succeed that towered above his 6’7” frame. Bassamba’s dream to play in the NBA was cut short with a career ending injury, but his passion to succeed and indomitable spirit were undeterred. Since earning undergraduate degrees in Computer Science, Political Science, and Business Administration and two master’s degrees, Bassamba has combined the teaching, training, and motivational skills learned as a professional athlete to help others achieve their highest fitness, nutritional, and lifestyle goals. Founder and owner of Farragut-based Greatness Fitness, Bassamba and his team of experienced and dedicated fitness experts have helped many people from all walks of life 6

achieve their personal best. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are excited to feature Greatness Fitness and its founder, Bassamba Sao. EK: It would appear that so many of your life’s experiences prepared you and were requisites for your success at Greatness Fitness. Explain. Bassamba: It has not been an easy road but nonetheless a blessing for being fortunate to experience so much at an early stage of my life. Being able to use that experience as an asset in the present is what I call a miracle from the heavens. Before responding, let me start by saying that we are grateful for this opportunity to help people learn more about Greatness Fitness. Personally, my life has been a series of blessings sometime disguised in hardships. I am fortunate to have been raised by an amazing woman who believed in me so much that she dedicated her entire life to teaching me what’s important in life and what to stand for no matter what the circumstances. That woman was my dear grandmother, Kadidia Tamboura. She taught me this in her own words: If you help everyone to be in the light and help them all shine, your life will never be in darkness again, ever. It’s the art of serving genuinely while being

mindful that things won’t be as easy as you may wish in the journey called life. Life can be hard; we will occasionally fall on our faces, but it’s the process of getting up and facing your challenges, stronger and wiser, that will make the difference. Adversity is inevitable, but I chose not to let mine become an excuse. I wouldn’t be who I am today if my journey didn’t include unfortunate events. It’s not what happens to you in life that determines where you will end up, but rather how to respond to your personal challenges. EK: How have you been able to successfully instill into others your passion to succeed and to become their personal best? Bassamba: It’s a work in progress. Genuine passion is contagious. Our dedication to greatness is a commitment we hope to instill into everyone we serve at Greatness Fitness. We are passionate about your well-being. Like the insights my grandmother shared with me as a child, it is my desire to help brighten the lives of others. We are a family at Greatness Fitness, and we take our dedication to you very seriously. At Greatness Fitness, we have seen miracles happen in the lives of people who have tried unsuccessfully to achieve their well-being goals in the past. EK: How does Greatness Fitness differ from

other fitness venues? Bassamba: It’s our underlying philosophy and the fact that we had to be different if our clients were to succeed. We embrace a variety of characteristics not often experienced in our industry, including humility, knowledge, honesty, integrity, consistency, and a commitment to hard work combined with love and laughter. We make it a point to know each of our clients personally and to offer them the level of encouragement that they will need to succeed. We celebrate each of your successes as a family. We have clients that have lost more than 100 pounds. Others couldn’t run 1/4 of a mile and now run marathons. We have two clients that have lost 40 pounds in 90 days in a very healthy way and are off all their medications. EK: One only has to watch your members for a few minutes to observe the relationships that exist between them. How important is this to their and your success? Bassamba: Thank you for mentioning that. It warms my heart to experience the unity that exists within our team. Relationships are our key to lasting success. The journey to an improved well-being isn’t always easy or simple. The mutual trust and respect we inspire within our membership group provides the encouragement and energy needed to help you achieve your personal best. At Greatness Fitness, we provide the success driven environment that you’ll need to succeed at a pace that you’re comfortable with. EK: Your members pay only $29.99 per month but are not required to sign any longterm agreement. Explain. Bassamba: After doing our in-depth market research to learn how to best serve the needs of our community, we came up with a highly competitive pricing system that met our clients’ needs. Our pricing structure offers our clients everything they will need to succeed without requiring any long-term commitment. We know that if we deliver the results our clients expect, they will remain members. We know that if we exceed your expectations,

our and your successes will be assured. EK: Greatness Fitness is not a one-sizefits-all experience. Tell our readers how you differ. Bassamba: We are a resource for complete well-being. When your body is healthy, your mind performs better. We offer a range of experiences specifically designed to help you achieve your individual fitness and health goals. From gaining weight to losing weight, maintenance to toning up, building muscle mass, becoming faster, stronger, leaner, or simply being able to walk the stairs without losing your breath, Greatness Fitness offers you the comprehensive training program and experienced trainers necessary to help you achieve your personal goals. EK: You seek to attract people from all walks of life, from teens to one woman in her 80s. Why? Bassamba: The sky is no longer your limit at Greatness Fitness. Everyone deserves the opportunity to become the best that they can be. At Greatness Fitness, we offer the opportunity to succeed to everyone – from the very young to 80 and beyond. EK: What many people don’t know is that you support a variety of initiatives to not only help lift the people of Mali out of poverty, but also to offer them the hope for brighter futures. Tell us more. Bassamba: After undergrad and grad school and the beginning of life without basketball, I knew that I wanted to do something that I was passionate about – to become financially independent but to serve others as well. Launching Greatness Fitness empowers me to help clients get off medications, gain self-confidence, and enjoy life more. It is so rewarding to have spouses call, in tears, thanking us for helping to change their partners’ lives. We are also very proud of our non-profit organization Meant to Be Up to Me. A 501(c)(3) non-profit, it’s primary purpose is to help fight and eradicate poverty around the globe. We focus mainly on empowering the powerless, helping women

in third world countries to enhance their self-esteem, creating a source of income for them by helping them to read and become fully independent. We build recreation centers for the elderly and young alike. I was born in an area of the world where an education, water, and clothing were a privilege. I am blessed with this opportunity to bless the lives of those who are less fortunate and often forgotten. EK: How can people learn more about Greatness Fitness? Bassamba: You can stop by anytime. We are located at 11139 Kingston Pike in Knoxville. Walk-ins are always welcome. Call us at 865671-6073 during our normal business hours or visit our website at www.greatnessfitness.com. EK: In closing, would you like to offer some words of encouragement to those who might be struggling in achieving fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle objectives? Bassamba: First of all, thank you for this opportunity to introduce our Greatness Fitness family. I love and am so proud of our team. They truly believe in each of you and your vision for improving your personal well-being. To everyone out there that needs help, has hit a personal wall, or feels trapped, come see us. Rediscover your full potential at Greatness Fitness. With God in your heart, success in your mind, your eyes on your goal, and an amazing support team and system, nothing is impossible. We created Greatness Fitness just for you and to be difference makers in the fitness and health industry, where so many people have given up on themselves. Our name says it all! Greatness Fitness... come get fit with us in mind, body, and soul and be all that you can be.

Big Ears Festival Expands to Four Days D

Initial 2017 festival lineup revealed

ESCRIBED AS “one of the most

quietly earth-shattering, subtly luminous festivals the world over” by the Oxford American, the Big Ears Festival will return to Knoxville’s historic downtown for the weekend of March 23-26, 2017, expanding to four days and new venues, including two beautiful downtown churches, with nearly 100 performances from more than 60 of the world’s most extraordinary musical creators – coming from classical music, jazz, rock, electronica, folk, bluegrass, and beyond. GA and VIP Weekend Passes, along with the newly announced “Premier Weekend Pass,” are on sale now at www.BigEarsFestival.com. This year’s Big Ears Festival lineup is a rich and diverse musical feast. Several of the most highly regarded and influential artists of the past half-century will perform: Jazz pianist/ composer Carla Bley (performing twice, once with her trio and once with the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra), British composer Gavin Bryars (astonishingly performing for the first time ever in the USA with his own ensemble), the great jazz bassist Henry Grimes with his quartet, eccentric American folksinger Michael Hurley, “magician of the voice” Meredith Monk with her ensemble, Alvin Curran, Frederic Rzewski, and Richard Teitelbaum, performing together in their almost mythic improvisational group Musica Elettronica Viva, as well as presenting their own individual performances, plus composer/reedman Henry Threadgill (winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Music) with his band, Zooid. Wilco will hold down the alt-rock foundation while Stephin Merritt & the Magnetic Fields will perform Merritt’s new 50 Song Memoir over two evenings; Icelandic composer (and Golden Globe winner) Jóhann Jóhannsson will present Drone Mass; Blonde Redhead will perform their classic Misery Is a Butterfly; the “cello goddess” Maya Beiser will return with two new programs, including David Lang’s powerful World to Come; composer/pianist Rachel Grimes premieres her new “folk opera” The Way Forth, with Joan Shelley and Nathan Salsburg; composer Sarah Kirkland Snider’s beautiful song cycle Unremembered will be sung by Shara Nova (My Brightest Diamond), 8

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2016

Padme Newsome (Clogs, The National) and DM Stith; saxophonist Colin Stetson (Arcade Fire, Bon Iver) will present Sorrow, his “reimagining” of Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony; saxophonist/composer Steve Lehman will bring his international jazz/hip hop project, Sélébéyone; Junun, the extraordinary collaboration featuring Israeli composer/singer Shye Ben Tzur and the Rajasthan Express, will perform; the groundbreaking choral group, The Crossing, will perform David Lang’s stunning The Little Match Girl Passion (which won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Music) in a second concert, in addition to Gavin Bryars’ choral meditation, The Fifth Century. Two other special projects will showcase the work of two late composers, whose influence on contemporary music continues to grow. Matmos will perform their staging of three key sections of the late Robert Ashley’s “opera for television” Perfect Lives (Private Parts) for the first time in the U.S., and producer Jace Clayton (DJ/rupture) will present his engaging Julius Eastman Memorial Dinner, celebrating the troubled and neglected African-American composer Julius Eastman, whose legacy grows stronger than ever a quarter of a century after his tragic death. Norway’s improvisational supergroup Supersilent will give their first U.S. concert since 2004, with master trumpeter/vocalist Arve Henriksen and keyboardist Ståle Storløkken performing separate concerts. Helge Sten will also deliver a rare Deathprod performance. In addition, Norwegian hardanger fiddle master Nils Økland will give his first concert ever in the U.S., performing with his band, as well as in a more intimate setting. Also from Norway, the accordion virtuoso Frode Haltli will present his powerful piece The Border Woods, weaving traditional Scandinavian folk traditions with Middle Eastern influences. There’s so much more: Indie heavy hitters like Deerhoof, Læticia Sadier (Stereolab), Colleen, Dave Harrington (Darkside), My Brightest Diamond, Xiu Xiu and Tortoise; i nte r n at i o n a l vo i c e s l i ke U k ra i n e ’s DhakaBrahka, Chinese guzheng master Wu Fei, and African urban Tuareg band Imarhan; groundbreaking contemporary classical

artists like cellist Oliver Coates (deemed Radiohead’s “secret weapon” on their latest record); pianist Lisa Moore; percussionist (and Wilco drummer) Glenn Kotche; flutist and music entrepreneur Claire Chase; composer and producer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith; vocalist Theo Bleckmann; ensembles American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) and Theatre of Voices; underground legends Ahleuchatistas, Rangda, Sir Richard Bishop, Six Organs of Admittance, and turntablist Philip Jeck; Baltimore rockers Horse Lords; young jazz guitar wizard Julian Lage with Punch Brothers’ picker Chris “Critter” Eldridge; plus folk singers Aoife O’Donovan and Joan Shelley. There will be more solo performances, collaborations, permutations, and surprises. Plus, there’ll be more musical additions, an extraordinary film program plus installations, exhibitions, talks, discussions, interactive experiences, food, wine, beer, and countless surprises to share in the coming weeks. We look forward to having you join us in 2017! Details will continue to unfold at www. BigEarsFestival.com, as well as on Big Ears’ Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages. In only a few short years, the Big Ears Festival has established itself as one of the most exciting and imaginative cultural gatherings in the world, bringing together a virtual who’s who of established and acclaimed iconoclasts, innovators, and influencers with younger artists who are synthesizing their own experiences into fresh, new creative work. Located in the heart of downtown Knoxville – and taking place in its world-class historic theaters, excellent clubs, and unique alternative performance spaces – all within easy walking distance of one another and intermingled with superb restaurants, bars, and shops – Big Ears offers an unparalleled experience for adventurous artists and audiences alike. While primarily focused on music, Big Ears is also developing a strong independent/experimental film component while also presenting installations, exhibitions, interactive experiences, talks, discussions, food, beer, wine, and more. Rev Up Your Charitable Giving & Tax Savings with These Easy Tax Tips

T

HIS IS THE TIME

of year when thoughts turn to helping others in need, whether with monetary donations, volunteer time, or charitable legacy planning. While you are making your charitable giving plans, consider Yvonne Marsh, CPA, CFP® these tips to maximize the tax benefit of your good deeds: » Rather than donating cash to your favorite charity, donate appreciated investments instead. Perhaps you bought stock many years ago that is now worth much more than you paid for it. If you give the stock to the non-profit, and they cash it in, they don’t have to pay the tax on the capital gain. » If you are taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from your IRAs, and in turn writing a check to your church or charity, wait a minute! You need to know about the Qualified Charitable Distribution rules where the IRS allows you to donate your RMDs (any portion up to $100,000) directly to your non-profit and not count that RMD as income on your tax return. Who knew the IRS could be so kind? If your financial advisor hasn’t told you about this little gem, you might need to reassess the value your advisor is bringing to the table. » Perhaps you would like to leave some money to your church or charity in your will. Great idea! However, instead of gifting through your will, designate your non-profit as a beneficiary on your IRA. Why? Because IRA assets are taxable as ordinary income to your heirs but not taxable to your non-profit of choice. Let your heirs inherit your after-tax investments instead. » Maybe you like the idea of leaving some of your IRA money to your favorite charity but hate to think of short-changing your heirs. One solution is to use a portion of your RMDs and buy permanent life insurance. As a result, you give those taxable assets to your non-profit and give a tax-free death benefit to your heirs. Now everyone is happy! (Except perhaps the IRS.) Tax planning and charitable giving is not just for the rich. It’s for anyone who wants to choose where their hard-earned money goes – to taxes or to charities. Give our office a call if you would like a complimentary meeting to learn more.

6808 Northshore Drive:

An Opportunity to Realize Your Dream

YOU MAY DREAM of owning your own

business. That was my dream, too. I wanted to positively affect the lives of children and engage in community outreach through owning and operating my own Montessori school. To this end, after obtaining an English degree, I enrolled in an Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) training course and, after graduating, gained experience by teaching in two Montessori schools and a United Way Daycare Center. A year after moving to Knoxville, I realized my dream in 1979 by opening a Montessori school, with a partner, in a church. Enrollment grew rapidly, and we quickly began a search for a permanent location where we would have full control over our environment; a place where our school could blossom and reach its full potential. We had several important fixed criteria. The building had to be convenient for drop-off and pick-up of children. The physical building had to be large enough and also had to meet health department, fire safety, human services, and zoning requirements. If you are presently searching for the perfect location for your daycare or preschool, you know how challenging it can be to find a location that fulfills all these needs. It took me a year to find what seemed to be, at times, a chimera, since it was predicated on so many variables. Once we found our building, it was necessary that we obtain a zoning permit, work through all of the municipal challenges, bring it up to code through extensive 12

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2016

renovations while working with appropriate city, county, and state officials, and prepare our building to house 50 children, who ranged from toddlers to nearly five years old. Giving Tree Montessori moved into 6808 Northshore Drive in the fall of 1981 and thrived. It proved to be a perfect location and has continued to be a successful preschool/ daycare location for 35 years. After 14 years of teaching, I began the process of realizing another dream – that of becoming a writer. I succeeded in that, becoming a well-known science fiction writer and a Professor of Science Fiction Studies and Creative Writing at Georgia Tech. Despite that success, I still miss the joy and fun of daily interacting with young children during those years of rapid, amazing physical, emotional, and intellectual growth, and have engaged in an ongoing process of outreach in all of my careers to generate awareness of the crucial importance of the preschool years. Since buying my partner’s half of 6808 Northshore in 1992, I have rented the building to three successful preschools. What makes 6808 Northshore such a great place for a preschool or daycare? » Location: Northshore Drive is a main commuting artery for West Knoxville. Visibility is high – 14,000 cars pass 6808 Northshore each day. A separate entrance and exit to the paved parking lot make drop-off and pick-up easy. » Zoning: 6808 Northshore was granted permission for use as a child care center by the MPC in 1981.

» Building: With newly refinished hardwood floors, a large, carpeted, vaulted-ceiling room, a passive-solar room, new bathrooms, hand washing stations, a screened porch perfect for rainy days or lunch, an asphalt pad for bikes, and a large fenced playground, 6808 Northshore is a cheerful, adaptable building that can be used for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. » Income potential: Christian’s Preschool, which was in this location for the past 18 years, was licensed for 49 children. The Warmth of Hearth and Home to Be Celebrated When Christmas at Biltmore Begins November 4 WHEN

GEORGE

VANDERBILT

opened his home to family and friends on Christmas Eve 1895, so began a tradition at Biltmore that is carried on to this day. Christmas at Biltmore this year reflects the theme of “Hearth and Home,” getting right to the heart of what Vanderbilt intended for his North Carolina home. Running November 4 through January 8, 2017, Biltmore’s holiday celebration will provide guests with a completely immersive experience. The wonders of Biltmore House – masterpieces of art, architecture, and Vanderbilt family treasures – are enhanced with more than 70 intricately decorated trees along with hundreds of poinsettias and garlands. The towering 34-foot-tall Fraser Fir in the home’s immense Banquet Hall is the star attraction. While the sheer volume of Christmas décor is staggering, the resulting beauty is a testament to the expertise of Biltmore’s floral staff. This year the team has interpreted the theme of “Hearth and Home” throughout the house, emphasizing fireplaces and mantels in the grand spaces with warm colors, soft textures, and vintage-inspired ornaments. Guests may also enjoy the entire estate as part of their admission. The glass-roofed Conservatory anchoring the Walled Garden is filled with blooms, and daily seminars at A Gardener’s Place shop provide tips for guests’ own holiday décor. At Antler Hill Village & Winery, the Winery offers free tastings of Biltmore wines – including the new Christmas commemorative wine – and additional in-depth tours and programs to further wine appreciation. Weekends in the Village bring carolers sharing traditional Christmas favorites, and Santa making guest appearances at the bandstand to hear wish lists from guests of all ages. Candlelight Christmas Evenings From fireplace mantels draped with evergreens to towering trees festooned with 14

lights, Candlelight Christmas Evenings provide a warm welcome on a frosty night. By reservation only, these evenings in Biltmore House have become a cherished holiday tradition for many who enjoy a uniquely different view of holiday lights and live music. Setting the scene is a 55-foot Norway spruce sparkling in the center of the sweeping Front Lawn, flanked by rows of softly glowing luminaries. Candlelight Christmas Evenings are offered November 4 through January 7.

Keep Knoxville Beautiful to Revitalize Historic Train Mural in Old City KEEP KNOXVILLE Beautiful (KKB) is

on a mission to preserve the Knoxville Historic Train Mural, located on South Central Street in the courtyard of the Love Shack Restaurant in the Old City. Commissioned by KKB and created in 2001 by Walt Fieldsa, Eva Allawos, and Randall Starnes, the mural has stood for 15 years and shows significant deterioration. Keep Knoxville Beautiful has a goal of raising $4,500 to fund the restoration by original artist Walt Fieldsa. The recent and devastating loss of KKB’s Knoxville Music History Mural from the wall of 116 East Jackson in the Old City highlighted the importance of ongoing stewardship for KKB’s second mural. “The Knoxville Historic Train Mural is our only remaining mural, and we are passionate about restoring it as soon as we can,” stated Patience Melnik, Keep Knoxville Beautiful’s Executive Director. “Restoration work of this kind becomes more difficult and costly as the original artwork fades with time.” Like the Music Mural, the Train Mural is faded and cracked from age and the elements, and the ownership of the building has 16

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2016

changed since KKB originally obtained permission to create it. In this case, new owners Laura and Shawn Lyke guarantee the mural’s protection and are very supportive of efforts to revitalize it. The mural depicts an important era in Knoxville’s historic development. It commemorates the impact that railroads had on the development of our city – both culturally and economically. After the introduction of the railroad around 1850, Knoxville grew from a river town with only 2,000 residents to a major wholesale center for the Southeast. In 1901, Knoxville saw the introduction and establishment of the Southern Railway Company, which built the Southern Terminal on Depot Street, just blocks from the Historic Train Mural. 100% of the funds raised through the online fundraising platform Generosity by Indiegogo will pay for the artists’ time and supplies. To donate or for more information on Keep Knoxville Beautiful and the Historic Train Mural Restoration Project, visit www. keepknoxvillebeautiful.org. Turning Tradition into Unique

T

HANKSGIVING HAS ITS TRADITIONS. Fortunately,

making familiar recipes typically passed on from generation to generation brings feelings of comfort from our childhood. Traditionally, turkey and dressing with all the trimmings is the mainstay for Thanksgiving feasts dating back to the pilgrims. Still, there are ways to add sauces and side dishes to the already familiar fare to make this year’s holiday unique. Fermentation has long been used to preserve foods. There are also many health benefits derived from fermented foods. Fermented foods aid in digestion and are rich in vitamin B. They also supply the digestive tract with beneficial bacteria that help boost immunity. Unfortunately, the American diet does not consist of many fermented foods. Most people eat a diet full of overly processed, sugar and additive laden, non-nutritious foods that destroy the bacteria in the intestinal tract. Foods that were traditionally fermented or cultured are now preserved in different ways such as pickling with vinegar or canning, so that the beneficial bacteria is absent. Adding fermented foods to your diet is easy and, if you make them yourself, very affordable. A single serving of cultured food can contain trillions

of probiotics! That is equal to an entire jar of an expensive over-the-counter probiotic capsules. In addition to better digestion and nutrition, it also provides delightful variety. Sauces can change a traditional fare into a unique experience. Sauces made from items such as lentils, tahini, nuts, seeds, coconut milk, rice syrup, onions, or tomatoes can add much variety and excitement to a meal. Five tastes are important to digestion and balance in any meal. The five tastes are bitter, sour, sweet, pungent, and salty. You can make delicious sauces and dressings and wonderful tasting dips using all-natural ingredients that incorporate the five tastes. It’s an interesting fact that if you make your food too salty, you will crave sugar. If you constantly eat sugary laced foods, your body will crave salt. Balance is the key. Simple side dishes can lend creativity and variety. Have a plate of chopped garnishes like scallions, lemon slices, or cilantro. Add pressed salads with dried fruit. The result will be a variety of tastes and textures, as well as adding helpful healthy cuisine. These simple additions will have you looking forward to Thanksgiving with family and friends by turning tradition into a unique experience for all.

Note: Consult your healthcare professional before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes

Introducing

Gallian Medical Group

W

HEN HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM, Scott Gallian,

MD, and Lauren Gallian, NP, set out to create a fresh and new approach to providing full-service primary health care, they relied on their own past experiences, and the experiences of their dedicated team of health care professionals, to create Gallian Medical Group. “As a former member of the United States Air Force, and having been employed as a physician within a large health care organization, I experienced health care on a variety of levels,” said Scott. “The entire field of medicine has changed and will likely continue to evolve to where growing numbers of health care providers will become employees of large regional and national health care organizations.” “We became increasingly concerned about this loss of independence that we know to be so important when working in partnership with our patients to help them achieve their optimal level of health,” said Lauren. “Our goal was to combine the latest

innovations in health care with the one-onone relationships our patients were seeking but thought no longer existed.” Gallian Medical Group may be new to the community, but their team of caring and compassionate health care professionals is not. “Each of our medical team members has worked extensively in the health care industry, with one member having acquired 20+ years of experience,” said Scott. Gallian Medical Group sees patients 12 and up, focusing on evidence-based medicine and close collaboration with patients. Dr. Scott Gallian and Lauren are providing full-service primary care, including wellness and nutrition management, x-rays, physicals, sport and D.O.T. physicals, disease and diabetes management, mood disorder management, hypertension management, and much more. Conveniently located with even more convenient office hours, from 7 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday, with walk-ins welcomed, you are invited to discover an all-new level of health care that puts you first.

Guide to the Holidays: Dogs Edition!

M

ANY FAMILIES engage

in decorating this time of year for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. It’s also a time when more guests visit, so here are some things to help you keep your four-legged kids safe. » Decorations: Make certain that holiday decorations are not in reach of your dog, where they could be ingested. Power cords are a potential tripping hazard and can lead to electrical shock if chewed. Candles can be knocked over, creating a fire hazard. Have fun and decorate – just think about your dog first! » Guests: Many dogs love visitors; others can become fearful of strangers and can become over-excited or very stressed out. Take extra precautions. Keep your dog at a distance when greeting guests by putting up a baby

gate or confining them to another area of the home at the beginning of the visit. Introduce guests to your dog in a gradual, positive manner. During parties and loud gatherings, your dog might do best in another area of your home unless they have behaved well at these types of events in the past. If you’re uncertain how your four-legged kid will respond, here’s a safe alternative that will give you the peace of mind you deserve: Make reservations at Ms. C’s, and let your kids party with their canine friends while you celebrate the holidays with your friends and family.

ARBLE SPRINGS State Historic Site will be hosting a painting workshop on November 12th from 11 am to 2 pm. This workshop will be taught by local painting teacher, Kristi Bailey. Guests will participate in a beginning step-by-step painting, creating a landscape image of the scenic historic site. Previous painting experience is not required. The workshop costs $35 and covers the cost of supplies. For those bringing their own supplies, a recommended list can be provided upon registration. Bringing a sack lunch is recommended. Participants will meet under the pavilion. In the event of bad weather, the workshop will be moved inside. Space is limited to 20 guests, so register early by calling 865-573-5508. About Marble Springs State Historic Site Marble Springs State Historic Site is the

last remaining home of John Sevier. Born in Virginia in 1745, John Sevier made a name for himself as a Revolutionary War Hero during the Battle of Kings Mountain (1780), a key player and governor of the short-lived State of Franklin (1784-1788), and ultimately was elected to serve as the first governor of the State of Tennessee (1796). Marble Springs was the approximate 350-acre farm that Sevier lived on from 1801-1815, the last years of his life. Sevier named his farm Marble Springs because of the Tennessee Rose Marble that was quarried on site and the natural springs that flowed on the property. While visiting, you can tour several historic structures designed to represent various aspects of John Sevier’s life and times, including the Tavern, Loom House, Smoke House, Spring House, and the John Sevier Cabin and detached kitchen.

IMI MCLELLAN, originally from

Maine, and her husband relocated to East Tennessee to enjoy its rolling terra in a nd mist shrouded mounta ins, in addition to the state’s lower cost of living and more moderate winters. Today they reside in our area’s mountains, where Mimi pursues her passion for art. Mimi enjoys creating pebble art images using pebbles that are naturally water tumbled in area mountain creeks and streams. Since retiring, she and her husband use their newfound opportunities to travel to also collect shell fragments found on beaches where they visit to create unique pebble art pieces using these same shells. You are invited to view Mimi’s works, as well as the works of other area and regional artists, at Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater. You can also find Mimi’s art displayed at the Visitors Center in Coker Creek. Christmas is just around the corner and will be here before you know it. Gallery on Main offers many unique gifts for that special someone in your life, including those difficult to buy for folks on your holiday shopping list. Also, don’t forget Sweetwater’s “Small Town Christmas” shopping evening on November 26th from 5 to 8 pm, which is the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It’s a gala holiday event to be enjoyed by everyone young and old.

All That Glitters T

HE HOLIDAYS are again

upon us… the season we arm ourselves with confidence and cash to shop not only for gifts, but for ourselves as well! We dress up our homes and ourselves “to the nines” as we celebrate the most exciting time of the year! The holiday magic begins at The Lily Pad with sparkle and shine… metallic beaded fabrics, shine beads, sequins, and glitz galore! Why not add a top with shine and sparkle for a festive holiday look and pair it with a new wide leg pant, if that isn’t already hanging in your closet? Don’t skimp on the sparkle! This season shimmers and shines in all of the beautiful gemstone hues… rich royal, emerald green, and Bordeaux wine are right at the top with black when it comes to holiday dressing. As you’ve seen, fashion this fall can’t seem to get enough fringe and fur… a great gift idea since women of all ages love these looks. Fringe isn’t just for the southwest; it’s being rethought for fall, giving it a more

fun, flirty, and playful appeal. It’s showing up on dresses, vests, jackets, and sweaters, as well as shoes and handbags, so choose something “fringy” for yourself or as a stunning gift! Historically, fur was considered glamorous. Today’s faux fur has a fresher look – thanks to new styles, shapes, and colors – and has stepped over into the modern world. Look for it in the trimming of shawls, ponchos, jackets, and coats, and remember… it’s versatile enough to complement any outfit, from denim to velvet! Whether you’re shopping for yourself or for the perfect gift, let The Lily Pad become your holiday shopping headquarters!

Knox Essential Oils Change: The Only Constant in Life W

E HAVE SOME EXCITING changes to announce at Knox

Essential Oils, but first let us take this opportunity to thank everyone for their tremendous support and encouragement during the last year. Thanks to your continued interest in essential oils, our sales have continued to grow, as has your demand for even more information on oils and their use. Because our clients find it convenient to consult with us not only during our normal business hours, but evenings and weekends too, we have decided to eliminate our “brick and mortar” store in lieu of the convenience of our new online store that so many of you have

requested. With our new direction, we will be able to provide an even higher level of service to those of you interested in learning more about the benefits of essential oils. We will still be available for personal consultations, home parties, work groups, lunch and learns, and more, allowing us to reach many more people and providing a greater presence. We will also be available for a variety of special interests groups such as children with special needs, military veterans, and natural health organizations. For your convenience, our store will remain open during this transition throughout November. Afterwards you may still make

your purchases of your favorite essential oils at www.knoxessentialoils.com, or you may contact us at 865-474-1340 or email us at info@knoxessentialoils.com. If you are interested in signage and/or t-shirts, Hemp Monkeys Graphics will continue to provide these services. Please contact us at 865-474-1340 or email us at info@ hempmonkeysonline.com.

November Featured Artist Exhibit and Reception

RECENT WORKS

by painter George Rothery and jewelry designer Jennifer Lindsay will be on display November 1 through December 2 at the Art Market Gallery. An opening reception for the featured artists will begin at 5:30 pm on November 4 d u r i n g d ow n t ow n Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk, with complimentary refreshments and music performed by Em Chitty Turner. George Rothery is an oil and acrylic painter whose love of the sea inspires his work. Basically “self-taught,” his earliest memories of his artistic endeavors were drawings of ships and airplanes. Today he enjoys researching sea lore so he can combine his keen interest in history with his love of the sea. Jennifer Lindsay has been creating designer jewelry for many years. Her glass and crystal creations are a subtle blend of art, style, and function. Owned and operated by more than 60 professional regional artists, the Art Market Gallery, located at 422 South Gay Street, is a few doors down from Mast General Store and next to Downtown Grill & Brewery. Hours are 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm Friday, and 1 to 6 pm Sunday. The gallery is wheelchair accessible, and parking in the abutting garage and on the street is free on weekends and after 6 pm weekdays. Dollywood Hosts Light the Way 5K Walk/Run on November 11 Proceeds benefit Keep Sevier Beautiful & Share It Forward

PARTICIPANTS in the Light the Way

5K Walk/Run will see Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas festival in a new light – actually four million lights – as the theme park hosts this special event for a fifth year on Friday, November 11, beginning at 11 pm. Proceeds from the event benefit Keep Sevier Beautiful (KSB) and the Share It Forward (SIF) program at Dollywood. KSB, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, is a volunteer-based organization which focuses on waste reduction/recycling, litter prevention, and beautifying public spaces through education and community based programs. KSB’s goal is to protect the natural beauty of the area that millions of visitors come to see each year. SIF is a non-profit charity established for the purpose of raising and using funds to assist The Dollywood Company employees and their families in times of need. The program is funded through

employee donations, which are matched dollar for dollar by The Dollywood Company and, up to specified limits, by the shareholders of Herschend Family Entertainment, the park’s operating partner. “The beauty of Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas festival combined with the challenge of a course that only a theme park can provide makes this Light the Way 5K a one-of-a-kind event for runners and walkers,” said David Owenby, Director of the Share It Forward program. “But, most importantly, this event helps provide our non-profit organizations with financial assistance just before the holidays,” said Lisa Bryant, Executive Director of Keep Sevier Beautiful. Light the Way 5K participants are treated to a unique course decorated by the park’s four million Christmas lights, beginning their journey at Dollywood’s groups’ entrance,

traversing through the parking lot, and then winding through the theme park. The race will be chip timed and managed by Scenic City Multi-Sports, which also will be offering free photos to all participants to download, tweet, and share on Facebook. Awards will be presented to the top three overall for male and female participants. The top three finalists in each age division receive hand-blown glass Christmas ornaments custom-made for the event by Dollywood’s master glassblower. Pre-registration is encouraged for the Light the Way 5K, as the race is limited to 2,500 participants. Register online at www. edgereg.com /registration /event /1153. Race day registration is also available and takes place from 11 am to 9 pm at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort. For more information, call 865-428-9860 or visit www.lighttheway5k.net.

Billy Gibbons with ZZ Top R

OCK AND BLUES fans get their

music from all across the world. One favored and revered band started almost 50 years ago in Houston, Texas. That band is ZZ Top, who became known as the “little ol’ band from Texas.” They have been making huge, monster hits ever since their landmark album, “Tres Hombres,” and never looked back. Because the band is performing at the beautiful Tennessee Theatre, the opportunity presented itself to ask the band’s iconic Billy Gibbons a few questions. To say that I was thrilled would be an obvious understatement. Our brief exchange took place while Gibbons was in France. I first asked him how many tours their current tour makes for the band. “In total? ” he replied. “The word ‘incalculable’ springs to mind, because the truth is it’s a definite uncertainty when one tour ends and the next one begins. The best guess places it somewhere in four digits – yet again, that’s just a guess.” And how has touring changed for ZZ Top since the first tours? “We’ve graduated from a rented station wagon, stuffed full of gear and band members, to streamlined touring coaches, which makes for a rolling home when we’re not at home,” he said. “The streamlining is now way better keeping in touch with the outside world. During the outings in ZZ’s early years, we were last to know our albums were playing on radio and were starting to hit hard. Now it’s all about onboard Wi-Fi, re-runs of black-and-white 32

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2016

Perry Mason, and full-service kitchen preparations on wheels. Way back then complaints were few, as we were getting to groove with the folks getting into what we were puttin’ down. That groove continues to rock on, and fortunately the pathways these days are straight ahead.” I asked what can fans expect from shows on this tour – especially during the Knoxville stop. “We’re coming to Knoxville fresh from a run of European tour dates, so being back home always puts the band in a good frame of mind,” he said. “We’re the last to know what we’re gonna do until we do it, making each night something of a mystery what goes on up on deck; however, it’s with a great deal of certainty that it’s gonna be loud and it’s gonna rock.” With an over-abundance of music flooding the market in many different ways, I was curious who is commanding Mr. Gibbons’ attention, musically, these days. “We’ve remained close to Josh Homme and Queens of the Stone Age, of course, and are digging some up-and-coming bands, including a punk outfit out of L.A. called Surprise Vacation and Lecherous Gaze from Oakland,” he said. “Isaac Rother & The Phantoms are cool, as is Leon Bridges, the hip young soul guy from Ft. Worth. We’re partial to Buddy Guy’s young protégé Quinn Sullivan.” Boomerocity has a lot of readers who are musicians, so for the gear heads out there, I asked Billy what the “holy grail” of guitars is and did he own it. “You bet I do!” he replied. “It’s the infamous ’59 Les Paul Standard named

Pearly Gates that’s been the cornerstone since ZZ Top’s existence. Nothing plays or sounds like ‘er. She’s so singular that the Gibson company borrowed her back and did a proper reissue tribute. Talk about fine!” As for what’s on the band’s radar in the foreseeable future, Billy shared, “Actually, ZZ Top’s first full length live release set for release at the end of August is up and coming. It’s got all your favorites and, as a bonus, a version of Tennessee Ernie Ford’s ‘16 Tons’ with our good buddy, Jeff Beck, joining in. Fifteen tracks, recorded in a variety of outposts around the globe as far reaching as Las Vegas to Paris, Chicago to São Paolo, L.A. to London, back to Berlin, down to Dallas, over to Houston, Memphis, Mississippi, and probably some places I’ve left out.” We all hope that Billy and the band have many, many more years of playing and recording left in them. However, I ask this question to many of the people I’ve had the privilege of interviewing: When you step off the tour bus of life and go to that great gig in the sky (to cop a line from Pink Floyd), how do you want to be remembered, and what do you hope your legacy will be? I ran that question by Billy. “No plan to ‘step off ’ for a long while; however, it would be nice to think of ZZ Top as the band that rocked it with ‘tone, taste, and tenacity,’” he said. “Any and all association with the ongoing interpretation of the blues would be a bonus.” Keep up with Billy and the boys at www. zztop.com. You can read this interview in its entirety at www.boomerocity.com. Photo by Ross Halfin

Planning the Perfect Pantry O NCE USED

Slide-out baskets, full-extension drawers, and a countertop help maximize storage space in a pantry

» Plan on adjustable shelving – Altering the height of your shelves will accommodate various sizes of food products and small appliances. Make sure the shelves are not too deep and that you can see everything at once by placing smaller items at the front and larger items at the back. » Include special storage features – Using narrow cubbies for large platters, spice or wine racks, pull-out wire baskets for root vegetables, and other storage compartments are ideal for awkward items that are hard to stack. Tailored Living of Knoxville, part of the largest whole-home organization company in North America, can design and install a custom pantry based on your individual needs, tastes, and budget. Working with a Tailored Living professional designer, you’ll be surprised at the storage space you’ll have, no matter the size of your pantry.

just to store food, today’s pantries, whether a walk- or reach-in, are designed to be used as a multipurpose area for food prep, a morning coffee station or self-serve beverage bar, and wine storage. If you’re planning your pantry for a renovation or new home, there are several important ideas to keep in mind: » Design doors that open out – Adding a door that opens into the pantry greatly minimizes valuable storage space and makes a small pantry even smaller. Opt for a door that swings out. » Plan for electrical outlets – There are a number of small appliances you may want to use in the pantry. Even if you don’t plan to include any outlets, you never know what you’ll want in the future, and at that point it’s not easy to add them. » Include a counter – If you have the space, include a countertop to set bags of groceries on while they are being loaded into the pantry. And if space is a premium in your kitchen, the counter can provide space to use everyday appliances like a coffee maker or slow cooker. » Choose good lighting – It doesn’t have to be expensive, just functional. Without proper lighting, you’ll lose cans of peas and soup on the back shelf.

No Hassle Kitchen Makeovers H

AVE YOU PUT OFF updating your

kitchen for long enough? Maybe you would love a modern kitchen but are dreading the mess and expense that is typically involved with a remodeling project. Enter Kitchen TuneUp. This locally owned national franchise offers minor kitchen remodels. “We’re not selling our clients more than it takes to accomplish their goals according to their budget,” said local owner Ryan Thompson. “We once talked a client out of a new kitchen, because what she wanted could be accomplished through refacing and a couple of new cabinets. Needless to say, she saved lot of money.” Kitchen Tune-Up specializes in three services to update kitchens without clients having to empty their bank account. Their quick and affordable “Tune-Up” service is a wood reconditioning process that will make woodwork look like new. The process repairs and restores the original finish on wood cabinetry and other interior wood surfaces. Tuning up cabinets and adding new hardware is a fast and affordable way to refresh your space and can be completed in only one day. If your cabinet boxes are in good, solid condition, redooring may be a good option. By replacing the doors and drawer fronts, homeowners can change the style of their cabinets and keep the same color or paint their cabinet boxes. Redooring is very popular on white cabinets and painted cabinets and can typically be completed in one to three days. If the color and style are out of date, cabinet refacing is another option. In three to five days, a completely new look – subtle or dramatic – is apparent. Cabinet refacing enables clients to revitalize their kitchen with new doors, drawer fronts, and matching veneer while keeping the existing cabinet boxes in place. This creates a “new kitchen” look without the “new kitchen” price tag. Why has the business been so successful? “I think it’s because we stick with the basics such as returning phone calls, showing up on time, and completing the work as promised,” said Ryan. “This doesn’t sound difficult but is often lacking in the contracting business.” Kitchen Tune-Up also offers custom cabinetry and storage solutions, including roll-out trays, closets, and garage cabinets, as well as countertops. To schedule an appointment or to discuss your kitchen needs, call Ryan and Michelle at 865253-7805 or visit www.kitchentuneup.com.

Enjoy a Superior Thanksgiving Season with Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning

M

ANY OF US have already begun

planning for holiday events and family gatherings. As a parent and grandfather, I know just how important this time of the year is but how stressful holiday preparation can be as well. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we’ve been helping busy families prepare for the holidays for more than 30 years. So why is it important to clean your home’s carpets and Oriental and area rugs before your guests arrive? Well, for starters, to enhance the look of every room in your home. Also, if children and grandchildren play on your rugs and carpeting, you’ll want them to be as clean as they can be. There’s also a practical side. Well-maintained carpets and rugs will not only look better longer, but they’ll also last longer. You see, abrasives, dirt, and other contaminants are tracked into our homes and onto our carpeting and rugs from the bottoms of our shoes and our pet’s feet. Not only do these elements contaminate our carpets and rugs, making them look dull and dingy, but many of these contaminants are abrasive in nature and can permanently damage carpeting and rug fibers. Also, some of these tracked-in elements are snow and ice removal chemicals that can chemically bond to your home’s carpet and Oriental rug fibers.

Amish Excellence is proud to offer you an exciting new opportunity in dining room furniture called “Create Your Own.” “Create Your Own” allows you to custom design

your very own dining room collection. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. » First, select a table top. » Second, select a wood specie: Brown maple, oak, quarter sawn white oak, rustic quarter sawn white oak, hard maple, rustic cherry, hickory, or walnut. » Third, choose a table top wood design. » Fourth, select a stain color. » Fifth, select a table base. » Sixth, choose a table base color.

It’s as simple as that. A custom designed dining room table that will be the centerpiece of attention in whichever room it is used and a legacy furniture piece that will be handed down from generation to generation. Next, select from more than two dozen chair styles and matching case goods, including servers and dining cabinets. Discover for yourself what so many others in East Tennessee have already discovered: Amish Excellence offers you the highest quality, all-Amish craftsmanship and the finest 100% American wood species and competitive pricing that is often far less than similar but lower quality furniture offered elsewhere. November in the Garden C

AN WE all agree that

fall has been difficult? The summer seemed to hang on forever, and it has been as dry as burnt toast. The ground is cracking, plants are going dormant early, and we have moved into survival mode. Our plants are under a great deal of stress and need some TLC. » Water is the number one element that plants need to survive, and some of you are not giving your plants a sufficient amount. I cannot emphasize enough that sprinkler systems are not adequate for trees and shrubs! Those need soaker hoses or hand watering. Even some established plants need water at this point. » Let’s talk about what I mean by “established.” This means that the plant has been in the ground long enough to have set down a good root system. This does not mean a month or two; it means a year or two! Larger trees can take three years to become established. » You can plant trees and shrubs now if you are prepared to work up the soil and then

water the daylights out of them. The ground is still warm (obviously), so root systems do have time to put out. The advantage of fall planting is that 85% of root growth occurs during the fall and winter. The disadvantage this year is that the ground has the texture of cement. Bottom line: If you can get them in the ground and care for them until it starts raining again, go ahead

and plant. » If you didn’t pull out your annuals until late, there is still time to plant pansies and/ or violas. They will look nice all throughout the winter, and nothing cheers up a cold winter day like a pretty flower. You can plant them in your flower beds or in a frost proof container. If you planted your pansies too early and they got leggy, give them a haircut. » Since I mentioned containers, let’s talk about what is safe to leave outside and what should be cleaned out and brought in. Double-wall plastic, foam, fiberglass blends, and high-fired ceramics are safe to leave out year-round. Terra cotta and lower quality

ceramics will not survive freezing temperatures and should be cleaned and stored. I do encourage you to plant some containers for the fall and winter. They go a long way toward making your home look warm and welcoming! » Weeds will continue to rear their annoying little heads throughout the fall and winter. Keep pulling and apply Preen or other pre-emergents regularly. If you usually spray weeds, please read the packaging. Many herbicides are not effective if the temperature is too low. » Clean up your beds if you have not done so. Perennials with nice seed heads can be left for the birds to eat. If your plants had fungus or insect problems, however, cut them back, get the dead leaves up, and do not add them to your compost. Insects and fungal spores love to hang out in plant debris and multiply like crazy! » I encourage you to mulch if you have less than 3” currently. Mulch protects plants from the winter freeze/thaw cycles and insulates the roots against the cold. Don’t get carried away though! Do not stack it more than three inches deep, and do not pile it around the base of the plant. If you are not applying new mulch, fluff your old mulch with a rake or hoe. » Let’s talk about leaves next. If you don’t have many trees, just mow over the leaves and leave them in place. The clippings will help fertilize and protect your lawn. If you have lots of trees, however, you will need to get the leaves up or your lawn can suffocate. » Did your houseplants pitch a fit when you brought them back inside? You may need to move them to a sunnier spot or put them near a lamp. You should also keep an eye out for any insects that hitchhiked on plants that were brought inside for the winter. » Don’t forget about the birds. Keep your feeders filled and clean. Birdhouses can be cleaned out now, and birdbaths will also need to be cleaned and stored unless they are metal or plastic. There are birdbath heaters to keep year-round baths from freezing. » Ready or not, the countdown to the holidays has begun! Don’t forget that Meadow View is a great source for poinsettias, cut Frasier firs, wreaths, and greenery, as well as ornaments and gifts. All our poinsettias are grown on the family farm in Fentress County, and Rodney and I go to North Carolina to get the trees and greenery. We know our stock is fresh and healthy! Please don’t hesitate to call us if you have questions. Happy Thanksgiving!

8 Steps to Selling Your Home

Home

S

ELLING YOUR HOME? Go into

the process prepared to maximize your outcome. Hopefully you bought low, now’s the time to sell high! The first two priorities are: 1 – Finding the right real estate agent to help with the sale, and 2 – Deciding on a marketing plan. The real estate agent helps with the nuts and bolts of data collection, analysis, valuation, pricing, and comparing your property to the inventory currently on the market in your area. Quality service more than pays for itself. Discuss and agree on the rules for showings; for example, only pre-qualified buyers should get appointments to view the home. Open houses are the one time anyone, especially other brokers, should see the residence. Review the marketing strategy with the agent. Print and electronic media should be used. 3 – Clean and groom the front yard. 4 – Keep the kitchen sparkling clean with a fresh smell. 5 – Clean and detail the bathrooms, too. 6 – Clean all the windows in the house. 7 – Do not allow closets, storage areas, or laundry rooms to look overcrowded or inadequate. 8 – Depersonalize your space. Now that the house is ready… Walk through the house with the agent. Let them comment on practical improvements you should make in further readying the space. Small improvements can bring back great rewards in price. Buyers pay for move-in conditions. They also discount heavily for undesirable or unlivable conditions. Listen to your agent and give them the best possible product to sell. Your bottom line will improve. Besides, remember that pride factor buyers like to see? It feels pretty good to know you improved your home and left it better than you found it. Ready to sell? Contact one of the real estate agents found in your local Homes & Land Magazine or on HomesAndLand.com. About Homes & Land Homes & Land is a leading integrated real estate media franchise founded in 1983 by Russ and Cheryl Haskins. You can subscribe to magazines or search for area properties at HomesAndLand.com.

can be wonderful times to share with friends and family, but it’s also stressful when you are the one who must plan the meals and entertainment, buy the gifts, clean the house, and organize the decorations. Here are a few tips to help you get through the upcoming holidays: » Begin by making a holiday “to do” list of everything you need to accomplish. Decide which tasks you’ll handle yourself and which ones you can outsource. » Plan your meals and entertainment. Get out your recipe books, and decide what you’ll serve. Make your grocery list, and place your orders early for turkey, ham, or other special order items. Get your groceries delivered to save you extra time. » Make your gift list, and see what can be purchased online so you can avoid the rush of holiday shoppers. » Get out the decorations, and recruit your family to help unpack and hang them. » Get your home ready to shine when you entertain friends and family – dust furniture, change linens in the guest room, run the sweeper, polish the silver, dust the baseboards, clean the bathrooms. Keep cleaning products handy for fast touch-ups and easy maintenance after deep cleaning. » Let Fish Window Cleaning add the final touches to make your home sparkle: • Clean chandeliers and mirrors. • Dust and clean hard-to-reach ceiling fans. • Clean skylights and solar panels. • Reach and thoroughly clean fixtures in high ceilings or on walls. • Clean gutters and downspouts outside your home. • Clean awnings. • Pressure wash concrete surfaces, siding, gutters, soffits, patios, and decks. • Clean all your windows inside and out, removing hard water deposits and stains. Detail the sills, frames, and tracks and clean screens. • Take advantage of our FREE estimate offer and 100% guarantee on all our work. » Call early to make an appointment, as our holiday schedule fills up quickly. » Make time to have a happy and memorable holiday season with your friends and family this year!

TEVE VAI is a virtuoso guitarist, visionary composer, and consummate producer who sculpts musical sound with infinite creativity and technical mastery. At age 12, he started taking guitar lessons from Joe Satriani. At 18, he began his professional musical career transcribing for, and then playing with, the legendary Frank Zappa. More than three decades, 15 million album sales and three GRAMMY Awards later, Vai continues to use unbridled guitar virtuosity and soulful artistry to explore the spectrum of human emotion. He has proven himself, in his own right, to be one of music’s true originals. “I make music to push my own buttons,” explains Vai. “I’ve always been driven by an addiction to create sounds that are unique – not better than what other people do, just different.” That obsession remains the guiding force behind Vai’s ongoing musical evolution and what he loves most about being a musician. “For me, the real gravy is when I hear a strange or beautiful sound in my head and then make it real in the world using the devices I have as a musician,” says Vai. “The things that have never been done before are what interest me most.”

Keep Rodents Out of Your House!

MICE ARE EXPERTS at getting into your

home, entering through as little as a 1/4 inch crack. They are nocturnal, so they usually don’t come out in force until after dark, usually when you are sound asleep. If you do see any mice during the day, there are probably more!

FACT: In only 90 days, six mice can expand to

50 to 60!

Aside from being germ carriers, rodents can chew through your electrical wires in the attic, crawl space, and inside the walls, creating a potential fire hazard. One of their favorite places is in the kitchen looking for food or water. Their taste preferences are not too picky, for dog and cat food is fair game. Calling Dayton’s the very first time you see evidence of a rodent is very important to help prevent them from breeding and creating an infestation in your home. Here are some signs you may have a large rodent problem:

Droppings: New droppings are shiny

and like putty, while old ones are hard and crumbly.

Gnaw marks: Mice leave small,

clean cut holes. Holes from rats are bigger with rough, torn edges.

Rub marks: These are left when

rodents travel along walls, and dirt combines with the oils in their skin. New customers can take advantage of $25 OFF rodent control from Dayton’s with an annual pest agreement, which also includes insect pest control. All services are guaranteed.

Did You Fully Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces This Year?

I

F YOUR HOME wasn’t equipped with

retractable screens, the answer is likely no. Flying and biting insects can turn outdoor family gatherings into a nightmare, forcing you back indoors. But there’s a solution that can transform your outdoor living spaces into bug-free spaces for next season. Growing numbers of homeowners are creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanentlyinstalled grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially designed to be weather-proof, but flying and biting insects can prevent homeowners from using their new outdoor living spaces. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote enjoyable outdoor living experiences. They provide shade and allow you to extend the time that you, family, and friends spend on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using your retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or your home’s esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes to provide a seamless transition with your interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to your home’s general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is most needed. Now is the perfect time to install retractable screens on your home to take full advantage of our beautiful Tennessee autumn and to be prepared for all of your outdoor activities in the New Year. It’s a Christmas gift the entire family will enjoy all year-round. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

BOB DYLAN November 9 • 8 pm Tennessee Theatre

B

OB DYLAN’S career has lasted the better part of 50 years now. That’s pretty remarkable. What is more impressive is that Dylan has remained not only active for almost all of that period, but controversial. He has never gotten by on sentimentality or nostalgia. He has never repeated his successes. For better or for worse, Dylan has always pushed his work ahead. Bob Dylan is as great a songwriter – ah, let’s

not beat around the bush – as great an artist as America has produced. But he’d be the first to tell you that he is part of a long line, one link in an endless chain. You can follow his influence backward or forward according to your own inclination. Or you can spend a long time just listening to Dylan’s five decades of contributions. Wherever you go into it, and whatever you get out of it, your time will be well spent.

Experience the Resurfacing Solutions Difference

W

HAT SETS

Resurfacing Solutions apart from all other competition? Is it the affordable cost? Is it the warranty? Is it the durability of their products and materials? Is it the high customer satisfaction? The BEFORE answer is YES – YES – YES and YES! Hi! I’m Jesse, owner and founder of Resurfacing Solutions. There are many things that we feel sets us apart from all the “others,” but the one thing that I focus on is our reputation! When people talk about our business, I want the first thoughts that come to mind to be honesty, character, and reputation. Let’s face it, a company is only as good as the individual’s character and integrity who runs it and are employed by it. Having worked in construction and remodeling for the past 10+ years, I have seen many clients who choose a cheaper service or product to save time and money, paying little attention to the company’s reputation or product reviews, only to cost themselves more time and money in the long run!

BEFORE

At R esu r faci ng Solutions, we do things the right way, we sta nd behind our work, we keep our word, and we value our reputation! Here are two recent testimonials: “If anybody wants

“Our shower stall was looking old and dingy. A friend recommended we get it resurfaced. I am so glad we did! It looks like we bought a brand new stall but for A LOT less money. UT Gardens Plant of the Month: Black Gum LOOKING FOR incredible fall color?

Our native black gum tree, sometimes called black tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica), is a handsome tree that’s hard to beat when it comes to spectacular autumn foliage. Inconspicuous spring blooms and glossy, green foliage hardly make this tree stand out in the garden the rest of the year, but when autumn comes, Nyssa sylvatica becomes a real showstopper. With mosaic foliage ranging from bright yellow and orange to deep red and even purple all on one tree, Michael Dirr notes the black gum as “one of our best, most consistent, and most beautiful trees in the fall” in his Manual of Woody Landscape Plants. The black gum favors wet conditions and may be found growing alongside cypress and willows. Although black gums prefer moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soil, they can handle drier conditions common

in most landscapes. Nyssa sylvatica is dioecious, which means that male and female flowers are found on entirely different plants. Small, yellow-green blooms on the female trees ripen into attractive dark fruits in the fall. The blackish blue drupes are enjoyed by many species of birds and other animals, which makes a female tree a desirable addition to the wildlife garden. Nyssa sylvatica has an attractive habit that would make a fine addition in many landscapes. The black gum has a narrowly pyramidal shape in youth that becomes more horizontal with gently drooping branches as it ages. This tree typically doesn’t grow more than 50 feet tall with a span of greater than 30 feet and is a notoriously slow grower in many landscape settings. Dirr notes the growth rate as 12-15 feet over 10 to 15 years. If there is (or was) a Bradford pear in your

landscape that you were thinking about replacing, consider Nyssa sylvatica as a strong and handsome alternative for attractive habit, glossy foliage, and stunning fall foliage. You can find an established stand of black gums growing on the Knoxville campus of the UT Gardens between Neyland Drive and the HGTV beds, and be sure to visit this month to see the gorgeous mosaic fall color. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.utgardens.tennessee.edu.

Creating the Very Best from Reclaimed Wood R

ECLAIMED WOOD is a great

source of lumber with character that can be recycled and used to create exquisite flooring and cabinetry, doors, beams, you name it. Its uses are only limited by your imagination. Recycled wood from old, unused, dilapidated, or just plain neglected barns, warehouses, and such exude a warmth that can’t be matched by most modern building materials. Also, reclaimed lumber reduces the demand for new wood from the forests of this endangered world we live in today. There are a variety of ways to make the best out of reclaimed wood, especially in new construction. But whether you’re building or remodeling, you can give your home that unique, one-of-a-kind look that simply can’t be duplicated. Absolutely nothing can replace the aged feel, warmth, patina, and color tone of reclaimed wood. Everyone loves the warmth that a wood floor offers. Well, Plantation Reclaimed wood offers a one-of-a-kind flooring surface that you will not find in the “big box” stores. No two floors are ever alike. We offer a variety of woods that will add an entirely new level of character to any area of your home. Tobacco Road is one such type. Used during the 19th and early 20th century, tobacco farmers used a mixture of species of wood to build sidings and roof rafters for their tobacco barns, where they would dry their harvests, which in return gave the wood used its heavy color, which with regular weathering and stains gave the wood its unique and unusual character. Hence, wood reclaimed from these barns is termed Tobacco Road. Another species, Southern Reclaimed Heart Pine, which is often recognized by its rich yellow and golden tones along with the highest grain quality, is an ode to the American Manufacturing era. These were often used as beams in most of the largest manufacturing mills of this country. The mighty oak tree, known for its strength, was used extensively to construct the iconic American barn, most of which would last a century or more. Resawn beams from the oldest of these barns are used by Plantation Reclaimed to create the very best quality oak hardwood wide planks that will provide your home with the warmth it deserves. Fireplace mantels using reclaimed wood can also be used to provide an unparalleled level of character and style to your fireplace. Handcrafted using reclaimed wood, our mantels offer both a natural and contemporary form. Our hand-hewn antique mantels are sourced

from wood that is aged throughout many decades and centuries as structural timber in historic mills, barns, and warehouses. These timbers still exhibit the axe and tooling marks from when they were first cut and shaped. Our rough sawn antique mantels also bear the same axe marks of the early pioneers that first harvested the timbers from local forests. All of the mantels we offer capture the rich tradition of our early American wood-craftsman.

Antique barn Jenny Blalock s i d i n g s, c o m Owner plete with rusty nail holes and deep textures, can provide the interior or exterior of your home with an unparalleled and ageless beauty that cannot be matched by today’s manufactured woods and wood substitutes. We offer a variety of siding materials ranging from the grey-brown antique barn and faded grey barn siding to the all naturally faded red or white barn siding. To learn more, contact us today to discover how you can incorporate reclaimed wood products and their rich history into your home or business. Against All Odds WITH THE THANKSGIVING

season upon us, my wife Christina and I wanted to do something different for this month’s article. Bear with me while I give you a little background during the last eight years. I was working as a restaurant manager, and my wife was home raising our three children. I had worked every holiday and most weekends for years while Christina and the kids did outings alone for the most part. We were both ready for a change. When we started this company in fall 2008, we were hopeful despite a dismal economic climate. We knew that this business was our calling, so we took our life savings, leveraged all we had, and plunged into a new career. The first few months were challenging to say the least. When you start a new business, obviously you need new clients, and we were waiting for our phone to ring. Days went by without a single call. With our savings drained and very little business, we wondered if we were going to make it. More

than once we considered putting the new business on a backburner, but we never lost faith that eventually it would support itself. We considered taking on borders, downsizing, and taking second jobs. But miraculously, slowly, the phone started ringing. One of our first clients was a pizzeria. They were also feeling the brunt of the recession and asked if they could pay in part with pizza credit. So we ate pizza for the entire next week (lunch and dinner!) and were thankful for it. Most of our friends and family were truly concerned for us but remained supportive. Some of them babysat so Christina could accompany me on midnight cleanings. Another friend invited us to brunch many Sunday afternoons after seeing the unfortunate contents of our refrigerator. We even received a gift card to a local grocery store that literally put food on our table for two weeks. We laugh as we look back now, but it was a truly humbling experience.

Fitzwilliam We went from virtually “no business” to working 12-hour days, five days a week in the span of a month. We realize how lucky we are to have a thriving business in today’s economy and are incredibly thankful to all of you that gave us a chance. We know that without the support of our clients, we wouldn’t have a business. Thank you, Knoxville.

AST MONTH Shae Design Studio

and Child Help USA paired together to help bring more awareness and strength to the cause. Child Help is a local non-profit focused on treatment and prevention of child abuse. The update to their child-friendly space was an amazing project and will help children who have experienced trauma feel more comfortable where they are treated. This month Shae Design Studio is dressing up for the holidays! We are focused on versatile color palettes and natural elements. This means antlers, gold, glass, and lots of greenery. This year we are styling with a winter wooded wonderland in mind. Here are some easy tips on how to style your home for the holidays. 1. Greenery We love garland. This versatile, natural item can be used to wrap your mailbox, entry columns, and banister. Lay it across your mantle for a quick and easy holiday tune-up. Wreaths are a wonderful addition to any door and can be a fun craft to make with your children. This year create a wreath out of pinecones and garland and fill apothecary jars with acorns.

2. Layers Varying the heights of holiday décor items helps create a lush and full look without needing to buy a whole new decorative pallet each year. Utilize your large pieces like sofas and arm chairs and simply swap out your textiles; a holiday rug paired with pillows and a throw will really cozy things up. 3. Unique Color Fill your home with fun silvers, golds, and linens with unique statement pieces in teals and reds. One fun way to introduce a unique color like teal is in your stockings, holiday table settings, and ornaments. 4. Large Statement Piece Do not be afraid to go big with your décor. An oversized tree, mirror, and banner are all great items to choose from. Choose your favorite holiday song lyric, and create a banner to hang on your door or mantle. Our studio has several mirrors with unique shapes to add a bold accent to your powder room or above the fireplace. Stop by today and talk to one of our designers about how to dress up your mantle, decorate your door, and set the table for all of your guests. Shae Design Studio has several living room suites, lighting, cabinetry, and

accessories to help inspire your home décor this holiday season.

2016 East Tennessee Preservation Awards

E

AST TENNESSEE is a beauti-

ful region that is rich with history and interesting places. Each year the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance recognizes outstanding persons, projects, and organizations working to preserve our heritage for future generations. This year our 10 award winners are celebrated for their contributions to historic preservation, and we want to share their stories. Anderson Hall has been an anchor on the Maryville College campus since 1870. Named after the school’s founder, the structure received its first top-to-bottom renovation in 2014. The Johnson Architecture firm took a “listen, then draw” approach to upgrading the building while still maintaining its historical significance. The wide, open staircases, arch entryways, and iconic bell tower are still present alongside new mechanical systems, high-definition screens, and other modern appointments. The 19th century package now contains a 21st century learning environment. The Diggs family home in Oliver Springs has seen some changes. Built in 1905 by Alfred H. and Scotland Diggs, the house had to be moved away from the path of a new four-lane highway. It remains in the family, and Bettina Diggs Cox recently embarked on a full renovation. The once missing porch was rebuilt, and rooms throughout have been beautifully renovated. A unique feature of the home is the four fireplace mantels salvaged from the once popular Oliver Springs Hotel. Lodges and halls often become central gathering places for small towns and rural communities. This was the case in Wartburg when the American Legion Post 149 was built in 1946 following World War II. Built by local carpenters and featuring Crab Orchard stone, the building fell into disrepair. By 2011, it was covered in kudzu. That year a group of veterans and volunteers both reorganized Post 149 and began restoring the Post. But the story is bigger than just building improvements. In the process, the Post has become a community gathering place once again. Used for veterans’ services, fundraisers, concerts, weddings, meetings, and other special events, it shows what a community can do when people work together on a common vision. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in America. Miles of trails entice many people to explore the park’s natural beauty, but two men have hiked the trails with a different purpose in mind. Bob Lochbaum and Frank March have been documenting old cemeteries, about 200. They plan to publish a book with trail maps tracing families who once called the mountains home. Not only do the gentlemen map 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2016

locations, they have helped with restoration. Their efforts are helping to preserve the cultural history of a mountain people. Ken and Rowena Smith have a hand in preserving history every day. The Smiths have successfully renovated five buildings in downtown Morristown. Their civic leadership and business investment in the historic heart of the city has been integral to its recent growth. They led the effort to have their own home, Barton Springs in East Hamblen County, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Most recently they purchased and have been restoring another National Register property, Arrow Hill (Watkins-Witt House), in West Hamblen County. Their love of history and the community is helping to secure the future for these significant places. Never underestimate what a few dedicated individuals can accomplish. This is well demonstrated by the Tanner Preservation Alliance in Newport. Alumni of the Tanner School have been working hard to save the place that educated Cocke County’s African American students from the 1920s to 1966. The current building was part of the original Rosenwald School. In June 2016, the Alliance received $250,000 from the State of Tennessee to assist with restoration and $150,000 from the City of Newport. The Tanner School will emerge as an important community center for Cocke County citizens. Another example of community coming together can be found in Jefferson City. No one will argue that downtown Jefferson City, once known as Mossy Creek, has suffered years of neglect. But in 2010, a small group came together to learn about downtown revitalization though the Tennessee Downtowns programs. Since then, the Mossy Creek Foundation was established, a historic zoning commission was formed, certified local government status earned, and design guidelines approved. A facade improvement grant program has been helping building and business owners improve their storefronts. Most recently a new festival park was announced in the center of it all. Jefferson City has laid the foundation for a great downtown rebirth.

The Tennessee Main Street program has been helping downtowns renew their economic vitality and cultural significance through a proven approach developed by the National Main Street Center. Communities must meet rigorous criteria in order to become a certified Main Street participant. It takes a lot of work from community leaders, business and property owners, and volunteers. In September 2015, Sevierville joined 30 other towns across our state when the Sevierville Commons Association became certified for the first time. We congratulate them on taking this important step to ensuring a healthy and vibrant historic heart for Sevierville. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was one of the great social experiments of the Roosevelt administration. From rural electrification to economic development, TVA has had a major impact on the history of the Tennessee River Valley. In August, Norris Dam celebrated its 80th birthday and became the first TVA-built dam to be placed in the National Register of Historic Places. More dams across five states are expected to follow suit. We applaud TVA for recognizing its historic contributions to both the built environment and life of valley residents. Downtown Morristown may be the most unique central business district in Tennessee, if not one the most unique in the country. Its 1960s urban renewal efforts built SkyMart, an elevated sidewalk system, through the historic core. For a long time, the historic significance of the downtown area was in question. But no longer. In March, downtown Morristown was added to the National Register of Historic Places and the designation noted that the overall historic building inventory was intact. SkyMart itself reached a historic milestone, passing the 50 year mark. We commend the Crossroads Downtown Partnership and City of Morristown for obtaining this prestigious designation. View photos and learn more about past winners at www.knoxheritage.org/etpa.

The East Tennessee Preservation Alliance works to preserve the structures and places with historic or cultural significance in Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Morgan, Roane, Scott, Sevier, and Union counties. ETPA partners with Knox Heritage to serve as the regional arm for preservation activities in these 16 counties.

Christmas in the City

Kicks Off on November 25 W

ITH 100,000 LIGHTS being

installed just in the downtown core alone, city workers have already begun to hang strands of lights. There’s a lot of effort – a labor of love, really – that goes into making Christmas in the City a special season. The emotional payoff for City Public Service Department crews comes on Friday, November 25, when all those lights are switched on during the Regal Celebration of Lights on Market Square and in Krutch Park and Krutch Park Extension. The Regal Celebration of Lights and the accompanying opening of the Market Square outdoor ice skating rink kick off a more than month-long series of art and music performances, public gatherings, and the annual WIVK Christmas Parade on December 2. “We’ve received a lot of requests from Market Square business owners and the public throughout the years to remove the tent to help open up the ice rink, so we did just that last year – and the response was overwhelmingly positive,” said Judith Foltz, Special Events Director for the City of Knoxville. “With the tent removed, the ice rink became a miniature version of Rockefeller Center – Knoxville style. This year we are adding clear dasher boards that will visually enhance the open-air feeling of the rink. And, of course, we debuted a beautiful new 42-foot-tall tree with multi-colored energy-efficient LED synchronized lights last year, so we’re looking forward to flipping the switch again. It’s an amazing visual. Christmas in the City concludes with New Year’s Eve on the Square, and we had the biggest, happiest crowd last year – it’s always a magical way to end a year, and we anticipate another great celebration this year.” Major Christmas in the City Events for 2016: Regal Celebration of Lights: November 25 from 6 to 9 pm in Market Square, Krutch Park & Krutch Park Extension » Downtown Knoxville is transformed into a Christmas village » A 42-foot-tall animated Christmas tree in Krutch Park Extension will be lit » Krutch Park and surrounding streets sparkle with more than 100,000 lights Photos courtesy of the City of Knoxville

ARTICLE COURTESY OF THE BAR HARBOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Bar Harbor, Maine, Continues to Captivate Visitors

B

EGINNING IN THE MID-1800S and continuing through the 1930s,

Bar Harbor was known as a summer haven for the very rich and famous, including the Astors, Fords, Morgans, Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Carnegies. Grand-scale hotels and mansions – known locally as “summer cottages” – were built during that time. Today – luckily for the rest of us – Bar Harbor welcomes the world with open arms and an endless variety of sights, attractions, and activities. Situated on Mt. Desert Island and in close proximity to renowned Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor is the island’s largest town. Joining Bar Harbor are the picturesque villages of Southwest Harbor, Tremont, and Northwest Harbor. While glaciers created the upside-down claw-like shape of the island, its shape is not the only thing that makes it unique. The thirdlargest island on the east coast of the United States, Mt. Desert is home to the only natural fjord on the coast and also Cadillac Mountain, the highest mountain on the east coast north of Rio de Janeiro. From atop Cadillac Mountain’s 1,532 feet, visitors are the first to watch the sun rise each day in the United States. The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts who want to bike, hike, rock climb, paddle, sail, paddle board, and golf. For those who enjoy getting out on the water, consider sailing on a historic schooner, taking a lobster boat cruise to see how Maine’s iconic crustaceans are harvested, search for whales off the coast, or look for seals, puffins, birds, and other wildlife that hug the coastline. Also, there is just as much to do on land. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce website provides a comprehensive hiking section, from easy walks to strenuous hikes. In search of quieter pursuits and sight-seeing? You will find spectacular gardens, serene coves just waiting to be explored, rustic lobster eateries with waterfront picnic tables, unique museums, festivals, and plenty of restaurants 62

It’s All About Me

UCCESSFUL entrepreneurs

typically have healthy selfesteems, but others border on pure vanity. Self-confidence is a common characteristic shared by successful entrepreneurs, but there are both healthy and unhealthy versions of our personal esteem. I believe that unhealthy self-esteem results when we limit the perspective of our success, when we see only our own contribution, while ignoring the contributions of our associates, customers, and vendors. A truly successful small business owner functions more like an air traffic controller who coordinates the activities of a variety of team members, both on the ground and in the air. Although the controller is not tasked with the responsibility to actually fly the aircraft, the controller nevertheless provides the much needed direction to safely guide the plane and its passengers from point A to point B. The inability of

“There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.” – Ronald Reagan an entrepreneur to embrace the entire team undermines the team, much to the detriment of everyone involved. Ronald Reagan once said, “There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.” I love that quotation and believe it should be the core principle of every small business owner pursuing genuine success. But it has to exist in your company’s DNA. H e r e ’s o n e p l a c e w h e r e yo u c a n successfully incorporate this winning

p h i l o s o p hy i n t o y o u r c o m p a n y ’s culture. As your business prospers and you discover it’s necessary to delegate more responsibility and authority to your associates, encourage them to take individual initiative, recognizing that some mistakes will be inevitable, although they are rarely terminal. Remember that your destructive criticism can destroy not only the personal initiative of your associates, but your company’s chance to succeed in the future. Embrace an “It’s All About Us” attitude, where the entire TEAM takes a collective bow in recognition of the TEAM’S success. You’ll discover the TEAM’S success is far more gratifying than individual success.

new executive director of curriculum and instruction, Shannon Jackson has a lot on her plate – but she’s up to the task. Shannon was appointed to the position earlier this year by the superintendent. “I believe in drawing on the collective wisdom of everyone who serves the students and families in Knox County, so we have a strong culture of collaboration around instruction and curriculum,” said Shannon. Shannon began her career by interning at Farragut High School during the 1995-96 school year, teaching English and Russian. Then she moved to Nashville to be near her parents for a year but returned to Knoxville in 1997 to teach at West High School. She taught English at West until 2012, then served as the ELA supervisor for middle and high schools from 2012 to 2016. “In 2012, the supervisor for my department retired,” said Shannon. “I never thought that I would go into administration; however, I was always involved in mentoring and teacher support. Therefore, when the position for supervisor was posted, several teachers that I worked with encouraged me to apply. It was a very difficult 64

Her bachelor’s degree is in college scholars with an emphasis in English and Russian and a minor in education. She then went on to earn a master’s degree in curriculum instruction, an Urban Specialist Certificate, and a certificate in School Administration. She then enrolled in the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in Adolescence and Young Adulthood/English Language Arts portfolio and assessment program, and she is now a National Board Certified Teacher. “When I was exploring career options, I had the opportunity to participate in a

short teaching experience at West High School and at Carter Middle School,” said Shannon. “Working with the students under the direction of two great teachers, I realized that I loved teaching. I loved all of my years in the classroom and find my way back into classrooms whenever possible.” Shannon’s days involve working with content supervisors to make sure all Knox County schools have equitable curriculum that meet state standards for all subjects. She also fields requests to find resources to fulfill school needs, works with coaches to help them be a support system for teachers, and observes classrooms. “The challenges come with being a big district,” she said. “There is a lot of diversity in the needs for different schools, teachers, students, families, and communities. The size can also lead to challenges with communication. While these are challenges, which we carefully consider, the size and diversity of our district is also an asset. There is a lot of expertise and various perspectives from which we can draw, so we can continue to learn and to grow.”

Medicare Enrollment and Common Mistakes to Avoid

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE

open enrollment is now through December 7. If you have Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription plans, now is the time to review your current plan to make sure it still meets your current needs. A great resource can be found at www.medicare.gov. There’s a link where you can input all your prescriptions and it will help you find a plan in your area that would cost you less. If you have added new medications recently and are paying a lot out of pocket, it will direct you to the most cost efficient plan. During open enrollment, you can change plans without worrying about any pre-existing conditions. Common Mistakes to Avoid 1. Don’t judge Medicare Advantage plans only by the cost of their premiums. Zero- or lowpremium plans may look attractive because you receive the desired health care benefits and pay little or nothing up front, but zero-premium doesn’t mean zero expenses. 2. Don’t overlook the quality ratings of Medicare Advantage plans. The Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services collect data about Medicare Advantage plans, rating each plan on a scale of one star (poor) to five stars (excellent). The more stars, the better the plan has worked for members enrolled in it. The stars measure how well a plan ranks based on things such as its members’ experiences, complaints, and its customer service. 3. Not enrolling in Medicare because you have existing health coverage. Many people approaching 65 years old think they can pass on signing up for Medicare if they already have private insurance. This is a huge mistake. The only private insurance plan that may permit you to delay Medicare enrollment is a group health plan sponsored by an employer with 20 or more employees. Other types of coverage, including COBRA, aren’t acceptable substitutes for Medicare. If you’re supposed to enroll in Medicare but fail to when you’re first eligible, you may face steep late-enrollment penalties. Planning for your future, whether investing for retirement or navigating Social Security and Medicare, can be confusing, and decisions you make today can have a profound impact on you later. Hostess Gift Giving During the Holidays

ITH THE HOLIDAYS

around the corner, the chances are high that your family will be invited to a party or holiday celebration. Do you know the protocol for hostess gifts? If not, you’re not alone. Many people are confused about hostess gifts. What is the etiquette? When do you give them? What should you give? Truthfully, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to hostess gift giving, yet there are general gift giving tips that can guide you along the gift-giving path. To gift or not to gift – That is the question If you’re invited to a dinner party or holiday celebration, the question isn’t what gift to give, but whether you should bring a hostess gift at all. If your family is invited to a very large party or celebration and you don’t know the hosts personally, skip the gift. If you fear that showing up empty handed would cause you to commit a social faux pas, purchase a gift but leave it in your

vehicle. If you see that other guests are giving gifts, retrieve your gift and present it to your hosts. If you’re going to a small party or celebration put on by a family member or someone you know well, it’s appropriate to bring a gift. Ideas for hostess gifts Hostess gifts don’t have to break the bank. Here are some gift ideas that suit many different types of personalities: » Aromatherapy candles placed in a nice gift basket with body lotion and bubble bath. » Picture frames for a budding photographer. » Cookbooks are great hostess gifts for a woman who loves trying new recipes. » Chocolates: Splurge on chocolates you would never buy for yourself. » A mug and a selection of gourmet teas or coffee wrapped nicely or placed in a reusable gift basket. » Wine: The rule when giving wine is to tell the hostess that you do not want the wine to be served at the party. She is to enjoy the wine at her leisure later.

» A small plant for a woman who loves nature. » Homemade bread and a jar of preserves or jam. » CDs, DVDs, and books: Ask around and find out if there is any music, movies, or books that your hostess has been wanting. Purchase something you know she would enjoy. » Gift certificates: These are always appreciated. Certificates can be to a bath and body store, coffee shop, book store, or restaurant. Just as your host or hostess took the time to plan and prepare for the holiday gathering, you should take the steps that are necessary to present a packaged gift. Festively wrap the gift you’re giving, or place it in a nice gift basket that is accented with a ribbon tied on the handle. Wendy Faulkner is a freelance writer based in Blount County, Tennessee. Teaching Children to Solve Disagreements ONE TOPIC I’m asked about over and over again that so many parents struggle to find solutions for is sibling relationships. “How do I stop the fighting?” “What’s considered a normal amount of arguing?” “How can I help my children get along?” I’m not a licensed therapist, but I can offer you some guiding principles I know work based on my own experience working with my children and hundreds of others. It’s normal that siblings disagree, but it’s not acceptable that they disrespect, verbally or physically abuse, or do any other behavior that degrades, hurts, or humiliates their siblings. We all disagree at times, but children must learn how to handle disagreements with love and respect. First, we have to raise our expectations of appropriate behavior. Second, the adults in the home must be the living example of appropriate behavior. Here are four steps to teach your children how to handle disagreements. Step 1: Recognize there’s a disagreement and verbally state it. This seems silly or redundant, but it’s important, because when it’s verbalized, we’re validating one another’s opinion, which is often not

66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE November 2016

done in an open disagreement. An example: “I see that we don’t share the same opinion on this. It looks like you want to watch this, but I’d prefer to watch that.” Step 2: Both parties are invited to politely explain their position with soft voices. For example: » Child 1: “I want to watch this, because we haven’t seen it in a long time, and the movie you want to watch scares me. » Child 2: “I don’t like your movie. I think it’s boring.” Step 3: Both parties suggest a solution then invite the other person to agree. Examples include: » Child 1: “Can I watch my movie while you play with your LEGOs, then you can watch your movie while I do my homework?” » Child 2: “Can I watch my movie first since I have scouts tonight, then you can watch your movie while I’m gone?” Step 4: If you don’t reach an agreement, you both agree to move on to another activity, with neither person enjoying the first request. No one gets what they want when they can’t compromise. Make a poster with these steps to hang in

your home. The Four Steps to Solving a Disagreement: » Step 1: Recognize » Step 2: Explain » Step 3: Suggest and Invite » Step 4: Move On Teach and role play until your children understand these steps. Each time a disagreement arises, look at the poster and go through the steps. Soon they’ll do it without your help. If voices are raised, ugly words are said, or physical contact is made, the violator must be alone until they’re ready to walk through the steps with love and respect. Never accept your children being ugly towards each other, yelling, calling names, saying mean words, etc. There are many adults with broken relationships with their siblings, and it often goes back to the way they treated each other as children.

Truths & Myths About Adult Acne

I

F YOU’RE BEYOND your teenage

years and still coping with acne, you’re not alone. Many people continue to struggle with acne well into adulthood. In fact, some people experience their first acne breakouts as adults. Want to know more about adult acne? Read on to find seven truths and myths about this common skin condition. 1. Only teenagers get acne. MYTH. In many cases, especially for teens, acne can be caused by fluctuation of hormones. But this isn’t the only time in life where your body is at the mercy of your hormonal system: Pregnancy and menopause are common culprits when it comes to adult acne. Medical professionals call acne that starts in your teens and continues into adulthood “persistent acne.” Late-onset acne starts after age 25. Both are common. 2. Your diet can affect your breakouts. TRUTH. Research has suggested that foods high in sugar and dairy products can aggravate acne. If you’re facing breakout after breakout, opting for foods with a low glycemic index and passing on milk and cheese might help. 3. Popping a pimple will help it heal faster. MYTH. Popping, picking, or scratching a pimple is like sending out an open invitation for bacteria and infection. All of these actions can lead to skin damage and scarring, so it’s best to take a hands-off approach to pimples and adult acne breakouts. 4. Oily or acne-prone skin doesn’t need a moisturizer. MYTH. Moisturizer is an essential part of a healthy skin care regime, as it helps provide a protective barrier. Cleansing your skin twice a day using a lightweight,

non-comedogenic moisturizer and exfoliating with a retinoid can help you fight clogged pores, pimples, and inflammation. 5. Acne is genetic. FACT. Your family history can show up on your face. If a blood relative has struggled with adult acne, you might be predisposed to the condition. 6. Facial scrubs will help you beat acne. MYTH. While facial scrubs and exfoliating cleansers can help slough away

pore-clogging dead skin cells, they can also leave can leave tiny cuts that can lead to inflammation and make skin vulnerable to infection. This can lead to discoloration and scarring. 7. You must avoid makeup if you have a breakout. MYTH. There’s no need to avoid makeup if you have adult acne. In fact, camouflaging your breakout with concealer or foundation can boost your self-confidence. Just make sure that your products are labeled as “oil-free and non-comedogenic,” as these products lack the skin-clogging ingredients that can make your breakouts worse. Adult acne doesn’t have to be part of your life. If breakouts are an ongoing issue for you, consider making an appointment with Dr. Doppelt to learn more about acne treatment. With medical guidance and a little bit of patience, adult acne can be controlled.
