“Dustless” Versus “Sandless” Hardwood Floor Refinishing
HERE ARE TWO realities in
owning a hardwood floor. First, they are incredibly beautiful. Second, in order to retain their beauty, hardwood floors require refinishing. One real advantage to installing hardwood floors in your home is that they can usually be refinished multiple times, allowing you to restore their original showcase quality look. Two methods that are most often promoted to homeowners today are “dustless” and “sandless.” Despite both being advertised as hardwood refinishing systems, the two methods are very dissimilar in a couple of key ways. “Dustless” refinishing is the only method that allows you to restore your floor’s like-new finish. “Sandless” refinishing, on the other hand, is more or less a cosmetic method used to enhance only your floor’s topcoat. Everyday household objects are the space I utilize in my current work: A linen towel or a wool pillow. These pieces all use pictograms as part of the imagery. I’ve been collecting pictograms off packaging and books for years, because I love the way they’re drawn, and I see a kind of beauty in the simplicity of their purpose. Within my work, some of the pictograms function as literal instructions for the possible use of the object, and others allude to a message while also creating a decorative pattern. Jason Edwards works with acrylic paints, markers, inks, spray paint, and charcoal on paper and canvas. He also works with woodblock printing, digital painting, and video. His paintings and woodblocks style is whimsical, and his videos are very conceptual. Common themes in Jason’s paintings are reflective of other people’s emotions, and themes in his videos mostly deal with his internal emotions. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Featured on New Tennessee License Plate Proceeds from license plate sales benefit child literacy program

Library now is found within various communities around the globe, it humbly began in Parton’s home of Sevier County, Tennessee, more than 20 years ago. Now, the state of Tennessee honors the pioneering literacy initiative with a special license plate designed to help support the program’s goal of providing books to children. “My daddy thought the Imagination Library was the most important thing I’d ever accomplished, so I know if he was still here with us, he would’ve been the first person to buy one for his truck,” Parton said with a laugh. The colorful plate features the Imagination Library logo and Parton’s likeness with a silhouette of the Great Smoky Mountains in the background. The Dollywood Foundation plans to contribute its portion of the plate proceeds directly to county Imagination Library programs in Tennessee. The plate, produced by the Tennessee Department of Revenue, can be used on cars and trucks registered within Tennessee. “We could not provide one million books to children each month without the support of local communities around the world,”
said David Dotson, Dollywood Foundation President. “Through the funding and awareness the Tennessee Imagination Library license plate will generate, we’re able to inspire even more children here in our home state to love to read. All funds generated in each county will remain in that county to support the enrollment of additional children.” For a specialty plate to be produced, at least 1,000 Tennessee residents must place a preorder. The Dolly Parton/Imagination Library plate quickly reached its preorder requirement, allowing it to go in to production. For the more than 1,000 residents who pre-ordered,
those plates are beginning to arrive at local county clerk’s offices. Plates may be personalized for an additional fee through the Department of Revenue. To date, the Imagination Library, which is administered through the Dollywood Foundation, has provided more than 85 million books in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia! The free book-gifting program started in Parton’s home county in 1995 but was quickly adopted statewide as part of the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation.

Friends of the Smokies gathered for an evening of elegance at Cherokee Country Club on January 28 to celebrate Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) and to raise more than $725,000 for the park’s annual needs at the 2017 Evergreen Ball. The fundraiser featured a silent auction, wine auction, and live auction, which included one-of-a-kind experiences and vacation packages to the Tournament of Roses Parade and the Andes Mountains of Argentina. The evening ’s program was emceed by WBIR anchors, Robin Wilhoit and Russell Biven, and included welcome messages by Friends of the Smokies board chair, Rev. Dr. Dan Matthews, and GSMNP Superintendent, Cassius Cash. The recent fires in Gatlinburg weighed heavy on the heart of Rev. Dr. Matthews, a North Carolina native. “Our brothers and sisters on this side of the mountains have been through so much this past year,” he said. “Let’s come together tonight and show the world what ‘Smokies Strong’ looks like.”

Perhaps the time is drawing near to take the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) at your Yvonne Marsh, age 701/2, and you’re faced with CFP®, CPA the higher tax bill this creates. Unfortunately, your higher income can also force you into paying more for Medicare Part B & Part D premiums, plus subject more of your Social Security benefits to taxation. Here are a few tax tips to soften the impact of your RMDs: » For charitable giving, have a portion of your RMD paid directly to the charity according to the Qualified Charitable Distribution rules. That amount is then excluded from your adjusted gross income. This is especially beneficial for retirees who do not itemize and receive no tax benefit for their charitable giving. » In the last couple of years, the Qualified Longevity Annuity Contract (QLAC) has been introduced into the marketplace. By segregating up to 25% of your IRA (up to $125,000 per person) into a QLAC, the IRS allows you to exclude that amount from your annual RMD calculation. RMDs aren’t required to begin on these funds until age 85. A few other IRA tax-savings tips: » Consider defusing the RMD tax time-bomb with a multi-year strategy of Roth conversions. Each year convert a portion of your IRA to a Roth, being mindful to not push yourself into the next tax bracket. » Review your IRA beneficiary forms to ensure that both primary and contingent natural persons are named to preserve Stretch IRA tax rules for heirs. » In 2015, the IRS issued a ruling that specifically allows the after-tax portion of a 401k to be rolled into a tax-free Roth IRA. This is a game changer for people who have too much income to contribute directly to a Roth IRA. And self-employed people can set up an individual Roth 401k plan and add up to $53,000 ($59,000 if you are over age 50) each year. If you look ahead into the next 20-30 years of retirement and believe that tax rates will be higher in the future than they are now, it pays to create a tax strategy today. Uncle Sam is a co-owner of your IRA – it’s up to you to decide how much he gets to keep.

For a concentrated jolt of green energy, try a shot of wheat grass juice available at most health food stores. There are many benefits to drinking wheat grass juice, but possibly the most important reason is its extreme alkalinity. Chlorophyll can enable high levels of oxygen in the body, which is especially powerful in assisting the body to restore abnormalities. Oxygen is vital to many body processes, especially for the brain, which uses 25% of the oxygen supply. This high oxygen helps support a healthy body. Cleansing the liver is most efficient in the spring. Greens, sprouts, sour foods, and the grain barley are the best foods to accomplish this. Detoxing with green drinks and green foods can go a long way toward creating a healthier you. The color green often has a calming effect as well. There are many reasons to go “green” in the springtime. They are more abundant in spring than any time of the year, and by incorporating them into our diets on a daily basis, we secure a more healthy and calmer existence.

They also contain vitamins C and B6, thiamin, riboflavin, calcium, iron, potassium (to help regulate heart rate and blood pressure), and manganese. Other nutrients present in dandelion greens include folate, magnesium, phosphorus, and copper. Greens contain chlorophyll, which has purifying, anti-inflammatory, and nourishing benefits as well. Wearers rely on the bands to help relieve joint pain from chronic conditions like arthritis. Some come with a smartphone app that allows you to

Multiple versions are under development, and one commercially available detector is a small patch that you wear on your skin and then scan using your smartphone that’s been equipped with a special app. The app allows you to read the information recorded in the patch so you know your UV exposure and offers tips for sun safety, including what level SPF sunscreen you should wear. Hosts Gala on April 1
HE SCHOOL OF MUSIC
at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville will host its annual gala to raise money for student scholarships this spring. The black-tie event, which is open to the community, will take place on Saturday, April 1, at 6 pm at the Cherokee Country Club, located at 5138 Lyons View Pike in Knoxville. With the theme “A Night in the Caribbean,” the gala will feature music, a wine pull, fine dining, silent and live auctions, and live entertainment by School of Music faculty and students. During the live auction, participants will have the opportunity to bid on having School of Music students perform at an event in their home or another location. Other live auction items include a week for two at an all-inclusive Bahia Principe Caribbean resort with a $1,500 travel budget, an evening of dining at Blackberry Farm for four, a week at Bel Nor Cottage on Anna Maria Island, and a Caribbean dinner
for eight at Belvedere, home of Karen and Harvey White, featuring UT’s Andy Bliss and Cafe Marimba. All contributions from the gala will fund scholarships to help recruit young musicians to the School of Music, thanks to the sponsorship of Pilot Flying J. “The gala is a great opportunity to bring together the musical talents of the School of Music students and faculty and the generous supporters of the School of Music,” said Karen White, this year’s gala chair on the School of Music’s Board of Advisors. “We are planning a delightful evening to raise money for scholarships so that the UT School of Music can continue to attract talented students.” Individual tickets are $200, and sponsorship packages start at $500. OU DO NOT HAVE to be a fat cat to attend the Tennessee Valley Cat Fanciers 40th Anniversary Cat Show. Come learn about all breeds of cats at the show. This year there will be cat agility, and Bengal cats have been added to the competition. The show has been expanded to two days, March 25-26, at The Jacob Building at Chilhowee Park. The Cat Fanciers Association Annual Cat Show is to promote pedigree and non-pedigree cats. The public can meet and learn about more than 40 various breeds. Ten judges from around the country will award top 10 finals to Kittens, Adults, and Premiers (neuters and spays). There is also a household pet division. Judges explain to the
audience what they look for in each breed. About 225 cats will be in attendance. Think your cat cannot be trained? This year the CFA Show is introducing agility to the show. This is where cats of any breed or age can learn a racetrack of obstacles, runs, jumps, and hoops in as fast a time as possible. The club has invited Jill Archibald of CFA to be the Ringmaster. Some of the cats will receive regional and national titles as Agility Masters and Agility Champions. Community rescue groups are encouraged to participate in the non-pedigree judging. Many of these feline rescues will also have adoptable cats and kittens. Cats and their humans can go shopping in the vendor area as well.

RETIRING from my career in commercial real estate administration, I did what so many young retirees do, which was pursue my life’s passion of owning my very own women’s clothing boutique. First launched six years ago, my dream evolved from launching a boutique in historic downtown Loudon to Veronica G Boutique in Turkey Creek. I’ve loved every minute of the experience keeping up with the latest fashion trends, going to market in Atlanta, merchandising, marketing, and a whole host of other responsibilities that require an entrepreneur to wear a great many hats. Until Veronica G Boutique, I never fully appreciated just how exhilarating and challenging owning a small business could be. While I am grateful for the experience and the success I’ve enjoyed, I think I am most grateful for all of the friends I have met that have supported me and encouraged me as I pursued my dream. But now it’s time for me to pursue one more dream: Retirement. After experiencing a series of health related challenges, I have decided to pursue my new dream of traveling with my husband, Bob, and to take advantage of what we hope will be years of happy retirement memories after many decades of pursuing our respective careers. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr. NOXVILLE CHILDREN’S
Theatre, in partnership with The Ritchie Company, presents Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr. now through March 12: Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1 and 5 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm. The play is a live onstage version of the smash Broadway musical adapted from the classic animated film, especially written for ages four and older. Based on the original Broadway production that ran for more than 13 years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr. is a fantastic adaptation of the story of transformation and tolerance. The classic story entwines Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, with the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end, and he will be transformed to his former
self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity. The play is performed by 25 talented young actors from ages 9 to 16. Emma Lesniewski, a junior at South-Doyle High, will portray Belle, and Keegan Stump, a freshman at Bearden High, plays the Beast. Four actors are making their KCT debuts: Tarrin Chambers, Isabella
Murrell, Mary Simpson Stone, and Meredith Van Leuven. The rest of the cast includes Natalia Adams, Ben Barber, Karlee Beets, Eliza Kate Bonneville, Hallie Boring, Eason Bullard, Joseph Coram, Isabelle Hannah, Cate Harper, Maddy Grace Payne, Brycen Ritchie, Laura Snyder, Jacob Sousley, Keegan Spurr, Simeon Thress, Grant Trivette, Ethan Turbyfill, Derrick Washington, Jr., and Olivia Wilson. The play marks the directorial debut of Wheeler Moon, a junior at West High, who has been interning at KCT for the past year. Ruthanne Carter, a freshman at West High, serves as the show’s stage manager. Bethany Moon, a junior at West High, is the show’s costume designer. NE OF THE MOST iconic
bands to come out of the ‘70s was Earth, Wind & Fire. Their first huge hit, “Shining Star,” took our school – and the whole world – by a dancing storm. Fast-forward to today, and the band has repeatedly toured the world and has reportedly sold 100 million records. With a couple of their songs hitting the 2016 movies, Dr. Strange and Trolls, Earth, Wind & Fire is reaching all-new audiences and creating another generation of lifelong fans. The founder and genius behind Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White, passed away a year ago last month. His musical legacy is still being felt today, and the band honors his memory by carrying on its mission of blessing the masses with their iconic hits. Leading that mission is Maurice’s kid brother, Verdine White, who has been with the band since its inception as bass player. To say that Verdine is not only exceptionally talented but also high-energy would be a severe understatement. The man doesn’t stop from the moment he hits the stage until the final bow. Earth, Wind & Fire is on tour and will be performing at the Tennessee Theatre on March 21st. To talk about the tour and other Earth, Wind & Fire news, I called Verdine at his California home. With the band having been around for almost 50 years, I started by asking Verdine if he thought that the band would last that long or that the songs would still stand so well. “No, not at all,” he said. “When you first start, you hope to get a couple of hits and things like that. You just hope for the best, 30
EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2017
and then I thought I’d go back to teach and go back to school. But every year obviously got better and better and better. We have to thank my late brother, Maurice, for that. You know he passed away last year in February. He was the one with the vision. We’re just basically following the blueprint that he laid out.” Discussing the current tour, Verdine shared what fans can expect at the shows. “Well, it’s going to be a great show,” he said. “A lot of great energy. A lot of great songs. We’re on our fifth generation. Our music’s everywhere. One of the things we did is we have three songs in two of the biggest movies that came out before Christmas. Dr. Strange with Shining Star, and we also did the Trolls soundtrack with Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick. We have three songs in the number one and number two movies in the whole world – back-to-back, same weekend. “The other day my wife and I were at dinner, and a woman brought her three-year-old daughter to take pictures, because she had just seen the Trolls movie and was doing backflips in the theater. A three year old! And the parents brought them! They had just left the Trolls movie and said, ‘Can we take a picture?
Can we take a picture?’ That’s amazing, isn’t it? That’s really a blessing and shows you the power of songs.” As Verdine mentioned, his brother, Maurice, passed away a year ago. I asked what thoughts he would share about him. “That he was a great person, first of all,” he said. “He was a wonderful brother. He was just a great person. All those things first. And, of course, he was just a marvelously talented person! He was the best big brother that anybody could ever have. If it hadn’t been for him, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing.” As for what’s on the band’s radar for the next year or two, Verdine said, “We haven’t really thought about it yet. The most things we’re doing right now is getting ready for the tour, and then we’ll take it from there.” As for the band’s legacy, Verdine shared, “When you’re at this point in your career, that’s the question you get. If you were a young act, you wouldn’t give them that question. I think it’s still in process, you know what I’m sayin’? That’s my answer. It’s an obvious question to people like us when you’ve been around for quite some time. I think it still begs to be written. People ask me about Maurice’s legacy, and I say that it’s still being written. “One of the things that I tell young artists who come up to me is that I tell them to take care of themselves. Take care of themselves! Start now! That’s the one thing that I do say. I always say, ‘Stay strong! I saw ‘Whoa Nellie’ was with Dr. Michael Dirr at the University of Georgia’s Horticulture Research Farm in 2011. It was a hot day in July, and the bright glow of this holly’s beautiful foliage set me on fire. I had to have one! A few days later I bought one at a nursery in Atlanta and planted it in the University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson, that winter. Although the holly was named by Tony Avent, Dirr found the gold leaf selection as a branch sport on ‘Nellie R. Stevens’ on the Georgia campus. Whoa Nellie’s bright gold foliage contrasts with its older, inner dark-green leaves. For the best gold color, this holly should be grown in full sun. More than a few hours of shade will diminish its glow. A male pollinator such as ‘Edward J. Stevens’ or one of the Chinese hollies (Ilex cornuta) should be growing within 100 yards if you want to have bright red berries in the late fall and winter. ‘Whoa Nellie’ makes an outstanding single specimen in your landscape, as well as a shining light in a mixed screen planting. Its evergreen foliage also works well as cut greenery and will

brighten any Christmas arrangement. With no supplemental water, the ‘Whoa Nellie’ in the UT Gardens, Jackson, has grown to about six feet tall in about five years. A slightly younger plant can be seen growing along Neyland Drive in the UT Gardens, Knoxville. Under average garden conditions, you can expect this holly to reach between 10 and 12 feet tall by six to eight feet wide in about 10 years. Just like its mother plant ‘Nellie R. Stevens’, ‘Whoa Nellie’ is a tough long-lived specimen that is hardy to zone 6. It is not the easiest plant to find for sale, but an online search will provide a persistent shopper some options. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. PRING IS IN THE AIR!
Well, it has actually been in the air on and off since January. Spring and winter temperatures have alternated like a rollercoaster, and I don’t expect that to stop anytime soon. Historically, our average last frost is still mid-April. Ignore that date to your own peril, folks. I’ve seen people spend hundreds of dollars on flowers in an abnormally warm March, only to replace them a month later. If you insist on planting early, however, we will be happy to sell you plants twice! Let’s talk about things you can/should do outside this month: » Early March is a great time for planning and preparing. Take a nice walk around on a sunny day, and let your imagination wander. (If you don’t have an imagination, grab a friend who does, or just take pictures and bring them in to us.) Plan where you want to plant things this year, and make notes or do a quick sketch. Then prepare the area by cleaning it up, getting rid of weeds, and amending your soil. » Late March is a good time to plant and transplant trees, shrubs, and vines. I suggest waiting until then because
there’s less time for Mother Nature’s early spring temper tantrums to do damage but still enough time for root systems to establish before summer heat arrives. » You can sow cool season vegetables (peas, cruciferous veggies, and potatoes) in the ground, and start tender vegetables, herbs, and annuals inside. We have a nice selection of seeds and seed starting products if you need them. Please don’t rush warm season plants by putting them out too early! » You can plant spring blooming perennials to perk up your yard. You can also plant pansies, snapdragons, and other cool season annuals now. » If you planted pansies last fall, they need a boost of fertilizer now. They are heavy feeders, so either put down fresh slow release fertilize (like Osmocote) or plan on fertilizing with a water soluble product every two weeks. » Since I brought up fertilizing, trees, shrubs, and lawn grass can be fertilized now if you’re using an organic product such as Holly Tone. If you’re using a non-organic, please wait until late March. Non-organics have a faster

response, and new growth can be nipped by temperature drops. Also, wait until late March to fertilize perennials. » Some bulbs have been blooming since February, so add a good bulb fertilizer or bone meal to help them store up energy for next spring. Don’t cut the foliage off until it yellows, or your blooms will be drastically reduced next year. » Our Pruning Workshop will be on March 4th at 10 am. Please come to it before you go out and just start whacking away at your plants. Yes, it’s time to prune. No, you shouldn’t go out and start chopping like you’re trapped in a jungle and have to cut your way out! Education is key, my friends. » If you haven’t trimmed your grasses and groundcovers, you can do that now. You can run over small grasses and groundcovers with your lawnmower set on its tallest setting or use a string trimmer. Leave a few inches on taller grasses to protect the tender new shoots. » I mentioned weeding above, but let’s talk a little about herbicides. I beg you to please read the directions! If you spray when it’s too cold or before a rain, you’ve wasted your time and money. Consider hand weeding or using natural products when possible. It’s great exercise. » How is your mulch situation? If you don’t need to apply more, fluff what you have left with a rake so that water will penetrate. It can become very compacted during the winter. If you’re re-applying, remember to only go about three inches deep, and do not pile it up around your plants. Donuts, not volcanoes! I also put down a couple of layers of newspaper underneath mine to further deter weeds. » I’ll end with a reminder to feed the birds. They are running out of food sources now, so you need to check your feeders daily. Black oil sunflower seed mixes, suet, and other high fat foods are best while it’s cold. Bluebirds and other fruit lovers will appreciate a mix with fruit. Finches want niger or thistle seed. Please keep the feeders clean, because moldy seed can be toxic. It’s also time to get nesting boxes ready by cleaning out debris from last season. Repair or replace old, worn out houses. Your grout is your first line of defense against soil, dirt, and liquids. A properly sealed grout line will protect the integrity of your floors, but a tile and grout floor that has not been sealed acts like a sponge, soaking up every nasty spill and particle of dirt it comes into contact with. New grout should always be properly sealed, cleaned regularly, and a new application of sealer should be applied every 12-24 months thereafter. Cleaning your grout can be tricky. Scrubbing the grout may remove dirt in the surface of the grout but not eliminate the stain. Stains can then creep back to the surface again, causing frustration to the homeowner. What’s more, a new roof helps protect your entire home from weather damage and can improve curb appeal. » Composite deck addition: Costs vary, but Remodeling bases its evaluation of ROI on a cost of about $17,000. At that price, adding a composite deck delivers ROI of 65.2%. Of course the value of your deck will depend on many factors, including the quality of the building products you choose. » Siding replacement: Another exterior
feature that protects the whole home and greatly affects its curb appeal, new siding can cost around $14,500. When you sell your home, that new siding will recoup about 76% of your initial investment. » Garage door replacement: Older garage doors may lack modern insulating qualities, and a shabby-looking door can drag down the look of your home. Replacing the garage door costs roughly $1,700 and returns nearly 77% of that amount at the time of resale. » Steel entry door: The single exterior home improvement with the greatest ROI is also one of the cheapest and easiest to do. Unwinding with your favorite TV shows or reading the latest news on your smartphone or tablet can seem like a nice way to ease into falling asleep once the kids are in bed, but it can hinder your sleep if you do it within an hour of bedtime. The blue light release from these various technological devices can actually trick your brain into thinking it is daytime, and
your body will delay its release of melatonin. 3. Step outside. Use that extra daylight to spend some quality time outside with your family. Research suggests a correlation between exercise and a good night’s rest. You can even use a pedometer or step monitor to ensure you’re moving your body enough throughout the day. Challenge your family to be more active, and your whole family will be getting more sleep. 4. Create an environment for sleep. A perfect sleep environment should be dark, quiet, and cool so you can fall asleep faster and stay asleep. If you have challenges with any of these factors, invest in some blackout curtains, ear plugs, or a fan. 5. Get support with a melatonin supplement. Various factors can affect the natural production of melatonin in our bodies such as age, diet, time changes, and stress. Supplementing with melatonin can help establish normal sleep patterns to give you a more restful, relaxing sleep and in turn, better overall health. Keep in mind that everyone’s body is different, so use these tips and be patient. Before long, moms and their families will be fully rested and ready to tackle their busy days.

for Knox Heritage, I get to do a number of interesting tasks that make every day something fun and different. One of my favorite things to do is research, particularly historic architecture and the people who designed, built, worked, and lived in these buildings. I get a lot of inquiries from many individuals who are interested in learning about the history of buildings. The nice thing is that someone doesn’t have to have a history degree to do this; it can be done by anyone at a local library. Knoxville is very fortunate to be home to the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection (not to be confused with the Frank H. McClung Museum, a wonderful museum on the campus of the University of Tennessee). The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is the local history and genealogy department of the Knox County Public Library and housed on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center on Gay Street. The McClung is home to a large collection of regional history and historic documents, and it is a top-notch genealogy research library. Some of its resources include newspapers, maps, manuscripts, government records, books, historic photographs, free access to web-based genealogical databases, and that’s just the beginning. The McClung makes it easy for anyone to visit. It is open every day, but the times will

be different depending on the day of the week. With helpful and friendly staff, fast service, and quiet corners to delve into a genealogy book or historic manuscript, anyone can find something to be excited about at the McClung. If you are starting to research your family’s genealogy or just have some spare time one day, plan a visit and take one of the free introductions to internet genealogy classes. Find out who lived in your house in 1925, or check out where your grandmother lived in the 1940 U.S. Census. Make a day of it, and while you’re downtown, have lunch on Market Square, shop for bulk candy at the Mast General Store, or see a show at the historic Tennessee Theatre. So many changes have been taking place in downtown Knoxville, and your research on local history at the McClung will most likely make you want to explore more of this historic area. For those wanting to explore the McClung online, they make it easy for you to look at historic images right from the comforts of your own home with its online digital collection. Spend hours hunting down historic images from Knoxville and East Tennessee. You can even purchase photos in a number of different ways. My favorite collection is the Thompson Photograph Collection taken by Knoxville’s own professional photographer, Jim Thompson. I also suggest exploring the Knox County Two Centuries Photograph Collection, a group
of more than 3,000 historic images owned by more than 200 Knox County citizens and organizations collected in 1991 for the 200th birthday of Knox County. For fans of Victorian architect George Barber, you will be excited to know that the digital collection has a wonderful group of architectural plan books and documents to review. HE MEDIA is great at reporting
everyday events but often falls short when reporting on financial matters. Recently we welcomed a new client to our firm that had previously worked with a stockbroker. This client had experienced negative growth on a large seven-figure account at the same time equity markets showed a 7% return. That client’s broker attempted to time the market, resulting in a six-figure missed opportunity. This type of experience isn’t as uncommon as you might expect. Many of our clients previously placed their faith in these mediahyped brokers that often fail to deliver on their promises. CXO Advisory Group, a Virginia-based research company, compared 6,582 forecasts from 68 financial experts from 2005 to 2012 and found they were accurate only 47% of the time. A recent report found that 58% of investors are sitting on cash. That’s a lot of missed investment opportunities, especially when
you consider that the DJIA recently broke 21,000 points. So why aren’t people investing? There’s a myriad of reasons ranging from the fear that the market might decline as predicted by the doomsayers or perhaps they had a negative experience like the client I described earlier. Regardless, their indecisiveness cost them a lot of money. In Napoleon Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich,” he discusses the fear of poverty as it relates to our money; the fear of extreme loss that prevents people from investing. There are two extremes: The extreme of greed and fear, both of which can spell disaster. In either case, a quality, blended portfolio could have produced an acceptable rate of return while minimizing risk. Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for photographic works for its 5th annual Knoxville Photo 2017. The national call for entries is open to all artists. This juried exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 photographic works from both emerging and established artists will comprise the exhibition in the main gallery of the beautifullyrestored Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street, Knoxville’s downtown arts anchor location, from July 7-28. The Emporium is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, with additional hours for special events. The deadline for entries to be received is Sunday, April 23. Prizes include more than $1,000 in cash awards, and exhibiting artists will receive a catalog of the exhibition. Artists may view the information, complete the entry form, and/or download an application at www. knoxalliance.com/knoxville-photo-entry. The call for entries is open to all artists. Entries must be original works taken within the last two years in the following categories: The Human Experience, Our Earth, Still Life, Travel, and Digital Imagination. raged through East Tennessee recently, many future University of Tennessee students lost their possessions, and they had a lot to worry about. Tyler Lewelling wanted to make sure their UT admissions materials weren’t among them. Lewelling, UT’s coordinator of freshman recruitment, was one of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions staff members who visited Gatlinburg-Pittman High School to replace admissions items for 20 students who may have lost them in the fire. “We felt that by replacing admissions information and giving a little extra ‘big orange love’ to these students, it might put their minds at ease so they don’t worry about replacing other items lost in the fire,” said Lewelling. “We want them to feel good about transitioning to college. I know I remember keeping my admission letter from UT; it’s a great keepsake!” Among the items they replaced were the Welcome to Rocky Top musical cards, admission packets, pens, and personalized Future Vol buttons. Lewelling has worked in undergraduate 64

admissions for about five years. He started as an admissions counselor and was promoted to coordinator last summer. His job involves promoting UT at college fairs, fielding questions from potential students, and easing the transition from high school to college for University of Tennessee students. “A typical day would include answering emails and incoming phone calls from future Vols (including their families and high school counselors), reading admissions applications, and meeting with prospective students as they visit campus,” he said. “I often travel throughout East Tennessee, visiting high schools and attending college fairs. We work to help future Vols have a great experience here from application to enrollment!” Lewelling said it meant a lot to him to be able to help future students in need.

F YOU WORK from home, you’ve
probably already seen that friends and family can take advantage of your time. Because you’re “at home,” many people assume you’re available and can drop whatever you’re doing to interact with them. Relatives or friends may call you up during work hours or drop by your home with intentions of visiting. If these scenarios happen too often in your life, here are some peoplemanagement tips that can help get things back on track for you. Explain your work Extended family and friends may not grasp that it is possible to work a full-time job from the comforts of your own home. People who haven’t made that switch in their minds may presume that what you’re doing is a hobby and not true employment. Sit down with the friends and relatives that are causing consistent interruptions and explain your work to them. Do this in an easygoing, non-offensive manner, but get the point across that you are operating
a business from your home. Tell them that you’re going to be unavailable for hanging out and phone calls during your work hours – barring some major event or natural disaster of course. If you’re interrupted during these hours, tell the offender you’re “not off ” work yet and to call back or come by later. Eventually your time-offenders will come to see that you really mean business, and they’ll start honoring your work hours. Dealing with household members Sometimes it isn’t friends and extended family members who interrupt your work. It can be your partner or children who aren’t honoring your work time. If your work hours are during times when your family members are also at home, you should set up a work area in your home. Ideally this should be a place where you can have a door that you can close to keep distractions and interruptions to a minimum. If you have young children in your home, you may have to invest in childcare in or out of your home. If it’s your partner or older
children who are interrupting your time, it’s time to sit down for a heart-to-heart talk. Explain that if they can honor your work hours and stay out of your work space, that you’ll finish your work up faster, and the faster you finish, the faster you can give them your undivided attention. Off time When you work from home, it’s easy to let it monopolize your every waking hour, especially in the beginning. Tell yourself that it’s just as important to schedule off time as it is to schedule your work hours. During your off times, you need to get away from your work completely. By doing this, your friends and family will come to see that you do indeed have “off time” and that they are guaranteed a place in your busy schedule. around the corner, and that means we might have multiple weddings to attend. I love attending weddings, and recently I have had the pleasure of attending several. The truth is, however, I have been rather shocked at the behavior and conduct of wedding attendees. For some reason, our society is just not teaching our young people (in particular) important etiquette considerations to remember when attending weddings. Remember, this is one of the most important days in a couple’s life, and because of its importance and significance, those attending must pay close attention that they don’t do anything that would take away from this very special occasion. Here are some important things that we must teach and practice: » Only the names on the wedding invitation should attend. If the invitation says “your 66

name and guest,” then and only then may you take someone with you. If the invitation does not have your children’s names or does not say “and family,” then your children are not invited. » Always be in your seat 15 minutes prior to the time the wedding is scheduled. If you arrive late, think carefully if it wise to enter the ceremony room. If you cannot enter without interruption, remain outside. » It is extremely rude to ever take a beverage or a food item into a wedding ceremony. I recently watched three teens carry their McDonald’s cups into a wedding. Never do that! » Dress in a way that does not take attention away from the bride. Women, this means that you should not wear an outfit that would cause everyone’s eyes to be on you instead of the bride. I hope you hear what I’m saying here!
» It’s best to not even take your phone into the wedding. Just leave it in your car, and then you may go retrieve it after the ceremony. Regardless of how careful everyone tries to be, these days there’s always someone’s phone ringing in the middle of a ceremony. So sad! » The best way to think of your behavior at a wedding is to be cheerful, yet discreet. Meaning, you want to be mindful that your behavior does not detract from the bride and groom in any way. All attention at all times should be on the happy couple. Enjoy those weddings!
