and I meet monthly with a variety of entrepreneurs, many of which are husband/wife teams. In conversations with them, we are usually asked if we always worked well together or if it was a difficult adjustment. Our answer is based on our 30+ years of working as a couple, which Photo by D. Roberts Photography included difficulties in adjusting until we identified our areas of expertise and learned not to overreach into each others’ areas. Luckily we were opposites in personalities and temperament, which happened to be the success formula for us. We have many advertising partners in our magazine that are also husband/wife teams like our featured business owners, Jeff and Joann Brown. This couple is proof that

husbands and wives can work together successfully as long as both are committed to their business. I am also asked by business owners if Tom and I ever considered going back to our corporate careers and walking away from self-employment. To that I can definitely say that we would not consider anything but self-employment, even with all the ups and downs that we’ve experienced. When you’re working together as a couple, you’re both working toward a common goal and interest, which we find very rewarding. The economy and the business environment are improving, and we’re excited to see more individuals and couples jumping into the world of self-employment. To all of these entrepreneurs, we wish much success and encourage you to enjoy the ride.

T

HE PERSON WHO wrote “a man’s home is his castle”

was no doubt a man. Thirty-three years of marriage has taught me otherwise. As a husband, dad, and grandfather, I’ve learned that our home is far more than a place to sleep. Our home has become a family gathering place full of past memories and an entire future of memories yet to be experienced. I’ve also learned that no matter where we entertain our guests, they seem to like our kitchen best. Despite all of the planning that my wife, Patti, and I have put into our home, our kitchen inevitably becomes the gathering place for our guests. And in anticipation of this fact, we designed a kitchen that is a friends and family gathering place yet retains that showcase gourmet look that we’re so proud of and that adds significantly to the value of our home. One big advantage that we had in designing our home’s kitchen is that we really put our extensive experience as owners of Granite Transformations to work. Our kitchen was designed to be both safe and durable. We used Granite Transformations’ engineered granite countertops that never need sealing, unlike conventional slab granite countertops. And unlike slab granite, ours are NSF certified and don’t emit potentially harmful gases such as radon. Designed by our own in-house design consultants, fabricated in our own Knoxville manufacturing facility, and installed by our own experienced craftsmen, our kitchen is both beautiful and, more importantly, safe and durable. If you would like to transform your ordinary kitchen into that gourmet appearance that you’ve been dreaming of, why not let my family help your family discover the Granite Transformations’ difference? With our wide selection of quartz, granite, recycled glass, and mosaic tiles, we can help you transform the ordinary into extraordinary.

hyaluronic acid dermal fillers has arrived! These new products, Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne, could be game changers in the facial aesthetic industry! They are both FDA-approved and have been used since 2010 in Europe under the name Emervel. Dean Kleto, MD

Dean Kleto, MD, who received a

medical degree from the University of Tennessee, Memphis, and completed a general surgery residency at Chattanooga’s Erlanger Hospital and a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, is a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He is affiliated with The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and has practiced in the Knoxville and Sevierville areas for more than 25 years. Dr. Kleto offers a variety of surgeries that include: • Breast procedures: reduction, lift, reconstruction, and augmentation, using the AxisThree 3-D Simulator, which allows patients to visualize breast augmentation results • Body contouring: liposuction, tummy tuck, body lifts, butt lifts, and thigh lifts • Facial procedures: eyelid surgery, brow lift, facelift, and rhinoplasty 865.524.2442 Photos by Christian Lange

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance found in human skin. Its production, however, diminishes with age. Therefore, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have become an important component in helping rejuvenate facial tissue. Furthermore, this new generation of products allows more flexibility with facial expressions, thus preventing an unnatural or hardened look. The effect of treatment can last up to 12 months and is especially successful in softening moderate to severe laugh lines. This new technology may be the answer you have been looking for! And the office of Cynthia St. Germain, BA, BSN, RN, is where you’ll find it. Call to make an appointment for a consultation, where all your questions about the products will be answered. Speaking of making an appointment, if you have or are in the process of planning your spring/summer vacation, remember to also plan for any procedure(s) you want to enhance your figure. This is the time to make an appointment for a breast augmentation or tummy tuck, and Dean Kleto, MD, is the physician who can help you attain that enviable silhouette. Dr. Kleto has a well-deserved reputation for achieving his patients’ expectations and satisfaction. Have the look others want!

“Dustless” Versus “Sandless” Hardwood Floor Refinishing

HERE ARE TWO realities in

owning a hardwood floor. First, they are incredibly beautiful. Second, in order to retain their beauty, hardwood floors require refinishing. One real advantage to installing hardwood floors in your home is that they can usually be refinished multiple times, allowing you to restore their original showcase quality look. Two methods that are most often promoted to homeowners today are “dustless” and “sandless.” Despite both being advertised as hardwood refinishing systems, the two methods are very dissimilar in a couple of key ways. “Dustless” refinishing is the only method that allows you to restore your floor’s like-new finish. “Sandless” refinishing, on the other hand, is more or less a cosmetic method used to enhance only your floor’s topcoat. Here are some important questions to ask yourself: Which method will restore my floors to like-new condition? » “Sandless” – This method will not eliminate imperfections, dents, scratches, or other damage. » “Dustless” – The only method that incor-

porates sanding and will safely return your floors to like-new condition without dust or fumes. Can I re-stain my floors with both methods? » “Sandless” – The answer is no. Because there is no sanding, stain cannot penetrate into the wood flooring. » “Dustless” – Yes. In fact, you can also change stain colors. The application of stain also helps to seal your refinished floors. At European Fine Hardwood Floors, we

not only use our skills learned from European flooring artisans to install the finest hardwood flooring, but we also use the newest technology and training to provide you with a dust-free and fume-free hardwood floor restoration experience. At European Fine Hardwood Floors, we are Bona Certified Craftsmen. This is your assurance of the finest finishing and refinishing results from the world’s undisputed leader in hardwood floor care: Bona. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. The reception also features music and dance by Pasion Flamenca from 6 to 6:30 pm and live music by Swing Serenade from 7 to 9 pm. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be available. Abingdon Arts Depot – Juried Members Exhibition in the Lower Gallery A new exhibition of mixed media works by 27 members of the Depot Artists Association in Abingdon, Virginia. For the fourth year, the Arts & Culture Alliance is partnering with another community-based art gallery for the purpose of promoting local artists within each community. The Arts Depot will host a simultaneous display of work by 42 Knoxvillearea artists in their gallery space at 314 Depot Square in Abingdon during March. The works chosen to travel to Knoxville were juried by Steven Reeves during the Depot’s 27th Annual Holiday Members Exhibition this past December. For more information, visit www. abingdonartsdepot.org. Jose Roberto: The Art of Surrealism in the Balcony Gallery When I was little, I put my hand in a meat grinder and lost most of my left arm. That was the beginning of my life as an artist. The loneliness and isolation I experienced during childhood now allows me to delve into the deepest realms of my emotions and release them at will onto the image. My subjects are usually emotionally-charged themes

brought about by my own life experiences. My paintings are influenced by my love of architecture, graphic novels, and the great masters. The act of painting is a collection of my thoughts, energy, and experiences. For more information, visit www.joseroberto.com. New Work by Coral Grace Turner in the Display Case Including hand screen printed fabric and needlepoint. Everyday household objects are the space I utilize in my current work: A linen towel or a wool pillow. These pieces all use pictograms as part of the imagery. I’ve been collecting pictograms off packaging and books for years, because I love the way they’re drawn, and I see a kind of beauty in the simplicity of their purpose. Within my work, some of the pictograms function as literal instructions for the possible use of the object, and others allude to a message while also creating a decorative pattern. For more information, visit www. coralgraceturner.com/art.html. “New Beginning” by Joe Bracco on the North Wall I started art with drawings of the Peanuts characters in 3rd grade. Since then, I’ve explored different areas of art from cartoons to Dali. I went to SUNY at Oswego in 1976 for Fine Art and Cartooning. In 1979, I enrolled in the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I went for the commercial part of the art to enhance my knowledge in the art field. The art world was tough, and I fell into a management position with a major drugstore, during which time I lost touch with my art. In 2014, I had the first of two hip replacements, which led to a new beginning in my art. I began painting again. At this point, I’m not completely back to my level from 32 years ago; however, I’m growing. For more information, visit www.joe-bracco.

pixels.com. Vintage Re-Inventions: Steampunk Creations by Eric Holstine, Jason Lambert, and Jason Edwards in the Atrium Eric Holstine of Charleston, WV, combines art with technology to create unique pieces that provide functionality. Holstine uses mixed media, including stained glass, metal, wood, polymer clay, and repurposed items.. Holstine’s work includes a functional mantle clock, an “Acoustic Roundabout Cube,” and a steampunk-style robot lamp. All pieces have an electronic feature and/or lighting effect designed and programmed by the artist. For more information, visit www.ehartwork.com. Experimentation is Jason Lambert’s primary goal. While originally working in pen and ink, he has recently transitioned into use of copper, steel, sharpies, and nail polish to create unique 2- and 3-D works. His degree in geology and minor in anthropology from the University of Kentucky have helped inform a love of old science he applies to new art. Jason Edwards works with acrylic paints, markers, inks, spray paint, and charcoal on paper and canvas. He also works with woodblock printing, digital painting, and video. His paintings and woodblocks style is whimsical, and his videos are very conceptual. Common themes in Jason’s paintings are reflective of other people’s emotions, and themes in his videos mostly deal with his internal emotions. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Featured on New Tennessee License Plate Proceeds from license plate sales benefit child literacy program

W

H I L E D O L L Y P A R T O N ’ S Imagination

Library now is found within various communities around the globe, it humbly began in Parton’s home of Sevier County, Tennessee, more than 20 years ago. Now, the state of Tennessee honors the pioneering literacy initiative with a special license plate designed to help support the program’s goal of providing books to children. “My daddy thought the Imagination Library was the most important thing I’d ever accomplished, so I know if he was still here with us, he would’ve been the first person to buy one for his truck,” Parton said with a laugh. The colorful plate features the Imagination Library logo and Parton’s likeness with a silhouette of the Great Smoky Mountains in the background. The Dollywood Foundation plans to contribute its portion of the plate proceeds directly to county Imagination Library programs in Tennessee. The plate, produced by the Tennessee Department of Revenue, can be used on cars and trucks registered within Tennessee. “We could not provide one million books to children each month without the support of local communities around the world,”

said David Dotson, Dollywood Foundation President. “Through the funding and awareness the Tennessee Imagination Library license plate will generate, we’re able to inspire even more children here in our home state to love to read. All funds generated in each county will remain in that county to support the enrollment of additional children.” For a specialty plate to be produced, at least 1,000 Tennessee residents must place a preorder. The Dolly Parton/Imagination Library plate quickly reached its preorder requirement, allowing it to go in to production. For the more than 1,000 residents who pre-ordered,

those plates are beginning to arrive at local county clerk’s offices. Plates may be personalized for an additional fee through the Department of Revenue. More information about the plate is available by visiting the Tennessee Department of Revenue website at www.tn.gov/revenue/ article/for-children. N BLACK TIES and ball gowns,

Friends of the Smokies gathered for an evening of elegance at Cherokee Country Club on January 28 to celebrate Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) and to raise more than $725,000 for the park’s annual needs at the 2017 Evergreen Ball. The fundraiser featured a silent auction, wine auction, and live auction, which included one-of-a-kind experiences and vacation packages to the Tournament of Roses Parade and the Andes Mountains of Argentina. The evening ’s program was emceed by WBIR anchors, Robin Wilhoit and Russell Biven, and included welcome messages by Friends of the Smokies board chair, Rev. Dr. Dan Matthews, and GSMNP Superintendent, Cassius Cash. The recent fires in Gatlinburg weighed heavy on the heart of Rev. Dr. Matthews, a North Carolina native. “Our brothers and sisters on this side of the mountains have been through so much this past year,” he said. “Let’s come together tonight and show the world what ‘Smokies Strong’ looks like.”

At t h e c l o s e of the evening ’s live auction, Sharon Miller Pryse, President and CEO of The Trust Company and Friends of the Smokies board member, announced a challenge gift of $30,000 to establish the Cades Cove Preservation Fund in recognition of The Trust Company’s 30th anniversary. Generous donations by the guests in attendance exceeded this goal, for a total of more than $75,000 dedicated to the preservation of Cades Cove. Cades Cove is one of the most popular areas of America’s most-visited national park, claiming more than two million of GSMNP’s 11 million total visitors in 2016. The 2017 Evergreen Ball was presented by Scripps Networks Interactive and the Travel

Channel. “The Travel Channel and Scripps Networks Interactive have been the presenting sponsors of our Evergreen Ball for many years,” said Jim Hart, Friends of the Smokies president. “Their commitment to the preservation and protection of the Smokies has been a major factor in helping this event raise more than $5.6 million during its 14 year history.” Friends of the Smokies has raised more than $55 million in support of GSMNP since the organization was founded in 1993. “After a challenging season, it is heartwarming to see the outpouring of love and support for the Smokies shine through,” said Superintendent Cash. “We are so thankful for the support of Friends of the Smokies and all of you here tonight.” Friends of the Smokies is an official nonprofit partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has raised more than $55 million to support critical park programs and maintain the Smokies as a crown jewel of the National Park Service. Tax Tips and IRA Rules That Can Save You Money B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

Y

OU’VE WORKED H A R D and saved

diligently in your 401k and IRA throughout the years. Perhaps the time is drawing near to take the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) at your Yvonne Marsh, age 701/2, and you’re faced with CFP®, CPA the higher tax bill this creates. Unfortunately, your higher income can also force you into paying more for Medicare Part B & Part D premiums, plus subject more of your Social Security benefits to taxation. Here are a few tax tips to soften the impact of your RMDs: » For charitable giving, have a portion of your RMD paid directly to the charity according to the Qualified Charitable Distribution rules. That amount is then excluded from your adjusted gross income. This is especially beneficial for retirees who do not itemize and receive no tax benefit for their charitable giving. » In the last couple of years, the Qualified Longevity Annuity Contract (QLAC) has been introduced into the marketplace. By segregating up to 25% of your IRA (up to $125,000 per person) into a QLAC, the IRS allows you to exclude that amount from your annual RMD calculation. RMDs aren’t required to begin on these funds until age 85. A few other IRA tax-savings tips: » Consider defusing the RMD tax time-bomb with a multi-year strategy of Roth conversions. Each year convert a portion of your IRA to a Roth, being mindful to not push yourself into the next tax bracket. » Review your IRA beneficiary forms to ensure that both primary and contingent natural persons are named to preserve Stretch IRA tax rules for heirs. » In 2015, the IRS issued a ruling that specifically allows the after-tax portion of a 401k to be rolled into a tax-free Roth IRA. This is a game changer for people who have too much income to contribute directly to a Roth IRA. And self-employed people can set up an individual Roth 401k plan and add up to $53,000 ($59,000 if you are over age 50) each year. If you look ahead into the next 20-30 years of retirement and believe that tax rates will be higher in the future than they are now, it pays to create a tax strategy today. Uncle Sam is a co-owner of your IRA – it’s up to you to decide how much he gets to keep.

nappa, turnip greens, and spinach are all great examples of spring greens containing chlorophyll. For a concentrated jolt of green energy, try a shot of wheat grass juice available at most health food stores. There are many benefits to drinking wheat grass juice, but possibly the most important reason is its extreme alkalinity. Chlorophyll can enable high levels of oxygen in the body, which is especially powerful in assisting the body to restore abnormalities. Oxygen is vital to many body processes, especially for the brain, which uses 25% of the oxygen supply. This high oxygen helps support a healthy body. Cleansing the liver is most efficient in the spring. Greens, sprouts, sour foods, and the grain barley are the best foods to accomplish this. Detoxing with green drinks and green foods can go a long way toward creating a healthier you. The color green often has a calming effect as well. There are many reasons to go “green” in the springtime. They are more abundant in spring than any time of the year, and by incorporating them into our diets on a daily basis, we secure a more healthy and calmer existence.

green. Not only is the color green sprouting up everywhere, but many varieties of edible greens become available. If you’re lucky enough to have your own garden, you may discover that some kale and collards enduring the winter are reviving and are edible in the spring. Both are hardy enough to survive the cold winter months and can be the first yield in the early spring. Fortunately, nature supplies us with just what we need at the perfect time. Spring offers greens that aid us in cleansing our bodies, healing our livers, and getting rid of excess fat. Dandelion greens are not only edible, but are useful in purifying the blood. They have the added benefit of supplying Vitamin K and Vitamin A. They also contain vitamins C and B6, thiamin, riboflavin, calcium, iron, potassium (to help regulate heart rate and blood pressure), and manganese. Other nutrients present in dandelion greens include folate, magnesium, phosphorus, and copper. Greens contain chlorophyll, which has purifying, anti-inflammatory, and nourishing benefits as well. The Best Wearable Tech Devices to Help You Look and Feel Better A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

W

EARABLE HEALTH

Technology first started in hospitals as a way to help people with injuries heal faster. Now the trend has gone mainstream and proactive; one in five online adults use a wearable device, and the majority of those devices are health-related, according to Forrester Research. Americans are using a variety of wearable devices to help them reach their wellness goals. Once, people would have needed a doctor’s visit to find out key wellness numbers like BMI or blood pressure or needed gym equipment to monitor their heart rates while exercising. Wearable devices allow them to do all those things, and even tone specific muscle groups, at their own convenience. Here are five wearable health devices and how you can use them to help build fitness and better health: » Fitness trackers: If it seems like everyone is wearing some kind of fitness tracker, you’re not imagining it. The top wearable of 2015 was a fitness tracker that shipped more than 21 million units last year and represented nearly 38% of the wearables market, according to International Data Corporation. Fitness trackers allow wearers to monitor key health indicators such as heart rate or calories burned. You can also use them to set and track exercise goals, such as walking a certain number of steps per day, or monitor your heart rate while exercising to ensure you reach a target zone. » Pain relief braces: Worn like traditional braces, smart braces use neurostimulation sensors, built into the fabric, to ease pain with low-level electrical impulses. Wearers rely on the bands to help relieve joint pain from chronic conditions like arthritis. Some come with a smartphone app that allows you to

20

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2017

track usage and sleep patterns. » Ab toner: Instead of spending hours in the gym doing crunches, you can enhance your workout by wearing a piece of technology that works to strengthen, firm, and tone your abs. The Slendertone Connect Abs wearable belt uses electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to stimulate the major abdominal muscles and can be worn and used at any time – even under your clothes. Users report visible results in six to eight weeks when used at least five days per week for 30 minutes. You can control this FDA-cleared device through an app on Android or Apple smartphones, and choose one of five goal-driven programs, from essential toning to post-natal and even advanced toning. The app also tracks and shares data on your progress. » Sleep trackers: Getting the right amount of sleep is critical for overall health, so sleep trackers have gained popularity as aids to help people get better rest. Many types are available and some are wearable. Sleep trackers monitor such sleep metrics as REM phases, how long per night you spend in light sleep

versus deep sleep, wake times, how quickly you fall asleep, what time you sleep each night, and more. » UV detector: An emerging form of wearable technology, UV detectors monitor skin exposure to harmful ultra-violet radiation – the portion of sunlight that causes sunburn, tanning, and skin cancer. Multiple versions are under development, and one commercially available detector is a small patch that you wear on your skin and then scan using your smartphone that’s been equipped with a special app. The app allows you to read the information recorded in the patch so you know your UV exposure and offers tips for sun safety, including what level SPF sunscreen you should wear. Many health care and tech industry watchers say the wearable health care device trend is really just getting started. Technology has great potential to help make it easier than ever to achieve your health and fitness goals, whether you want to get a better night’s rest, improve cardio-vascular health, or get toned abs.

Would You Like to Wear Contact Lenses? What’s Stopping You?

T

HERE ARE MANY reasons why

people give up wearing or don’t ever try wearing contact lenses. Comfort and vision are of equal importance when considering contact lenses. If both aren’t acceptable, it is easy to give up on contact lenses and rely on glasses alone for clear vision. Traditional soft contact lenses and rigid gas-permeable lenses have each had their shortcomings when dealing with astigmatism and presbyopia. Soft toric lenses can shift on the eye, causing unstable vision. Rigid gaspermeable lenses can be uncomfortable. Now we have a much better option for those who have either given up on contact lenses or have not been happy with the vision or comfort they currently get from their contact lenses. Duette Progressives are the latest generation of hybrid contact lenses that combine the comfort of soft lenses with the clear, stable vision of rigid gas permeable lenses. Duette Progressive’s rigid center delivers crisp, clear vision at all distances to let you focus on near objects, as well as enhancing intermediate and distance vision. With Duette Progressive, you can live focused… any time… any distance! The primary requirements to be successful with contact lenses are clear vision, comfort, and health. Duette Progressives provide crystal clear vision at all distances, advanced materials that are highly permeable to oxygen and contain UV blockers, and are very comfortable for all-day wear. For optimal success, it is best to find an eye doctor who is very experienced in fitting these types of lenses. Dr. Brent Fry of Premier Eyecare has fit more than a thousand patients with hybrid contact lenses during the past 10 years. He is currently one of a few select doctors in the country who is on the SynergEyes advisory board to help other doctors around the country learn how to fit these unique lenses. He is also a beta tester for a new hybrid contact lens developed for keratoconus. His experience and passion for fitting contact lenses provides an excellent opportunity for anyone in the Knoxville area looking to be free from glasses.

ITH THE RENEWED economic

optimism we are all experiencing today, consumer shopping trends are quickly being redefined. Today’s trendy consumers are discovering the growing popularity of upscale women’s consignment boutiques when shopping for the latest fashions. Not to be confused with clothing thrift stores, upscale women’s clothing shops ser ve two purposes: They represent a source of revenue for women wishing to recycle their gently used, quality clothing and accessories they may no longer wear, and for other women, they are a source of fashionable, high-quality women’s skirts, blouses, dresses, gowns, handbags, and jewelry at just a fraction of their original cost. A perfect example of one such upscale consignment boutique is Next To New, located at 7212 Kingston Pike, next to Olive Garden and adjacent to The Bed Store. Next To New founder and owner, Jackie Bivens, always delights in the response that first-time visitors have to her shop. “If your passion for fashion outweighs your budget, we can help you rebalance your budget with Next To New’s higher-end labels, in near new condition, for 50-85% off their original retail prices,” said Jackie. “It’s really the smartest way to shop and a smart way to make money on those unused designer-inspired fashions, jewelry, handbags, scarves, and shoes in your closet. With consignors such as Knoxville’s socialites literally emptying their closets, our merchandise is better than ever, including a fantastic selection of plus sizes. You’re certain to find many undiscovered treasures at Next To New.” Whether you have some fashionable, gently used, or never worn items just hanging around the closet that are looking for a new owner, or if you’re searching for that “just perfect” apparel item, jewelry piece, handbag, purse, or much more while keeping your budget intact, plan a visit to Next To New, the perfect location to find amazing items at even more amazing prices. Fancy Felines Gear Up for Knoxville Y

OU DO NOT HAVE to be a fat cat to attend the Tennessee Valley Cat Fanciers 40th Anniversary Cat Show. Come learn about all breeds of cats at the show. This year there will be cat agility, and Bengal cats have been added to the competition. The show has been expanded to two days, March 25-26, at The Jacob Building at Chilhowee Park. The Cat Fanciers Association Annual Cat Show is to promote pedigree and non-pedigree cats. The public can meet and learn about more than 40 various breeds. Ten judges from around the country will award top 10 finals to Kittens, Adults, and Premiers (neuters and spays). There is also a household pet division. Judges explain to the

audience what they look for in each breed. About 225 cats will be in attendance. Think your cat cannot be trained? This year the CFA Show is introducing agility to the show. This is where cats of any breed or age can learn a racetrack of obstacles, runs, jumps, and hoops in as fast a time as possible. The club has invited Jill Archibald of CFA to be the Ringmaster. Some of the cats will receive regional and national titles as Agility Masters and Agility Champions. Community rescue groups are encouraged to participate in the non-pedigree judging. Many of these feline rescues will also have adoptable cats and kittens. Cats and their humans can go shopping in the vendor area as well.

RETIRING from my career in commercial real estate administration, I did what so many young retirees do, which was pursue my life’s passion of owning my very own women’s clothing boutique. First launched six years ago, my dream evolved from launching a boutique in historic downtown Loudon to Veronica G Boutique in Turkey Creek. I’ve loved every minute of the experience keeping up with the latest fashion trends, going to market in Atlanta, merchandising, marketing, and a whole host of other responsibilities that require an entrepreneur to wear a great many hats. Until Veronica G Boutique, I never fully appreciated just how exhilarating and challenging owning a small business could be. While I am grateful for the experience and the success I’ve enjoyed, I think I am most grateful for all of the friends I have met that have supported me and encouraged me as I pursued my dream. But now it’s time for me to pursue one more dream: Retirement. After experiencing a series of health related challenges, I have decided to pursue my new dream of traveling with my husband, Bob, and to take advantage of what we hope will be years of happy retirement memories after many decades of pursuing our respective careers. As my way of thanking each and every one of you for your past support, we will be offering a storewide sale on almost everything in the boutique. Our last day will be Saturday, March 25th. I hope each of you will plan a visit to Veronica G Boutique, which will provide me with the opportunity to thank each of you personally, as well as to extend to you some great savings on some of the latest in women’s fashions from many of the nation’s top designers. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my husband, Bob, for supporting me. You often hear that a family business can sew disharmony in a relationship. Ours was the opposite experience. I hope to see you all soon, and thanks for the memories. Veronica G Boutique 11655 Parkside Drive Knoxville, TN 37934 865.675.0222

Spring is in the Air

E

YES ARE SMILING at Ms. C’s

Bed & Biscuits as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and the beginning of spring. Irish tradition states, “Crops planted or animals put out in the field before St. Patrick’s Day had to fear winter frost, but not following St. Patrick’s Day.” Green became the traditional color for St. Patrick’s Day, as it represents new growth and was Ireland’s welcome sign of spring. And the backyard at Ms. C’s is quickly turning green. Having faith in tradition, with the long winter months behind us, the promises of spring

are in the air at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits. Birds begin to gather in the back play yard, and our canine guests are beginning to enjoy romping, jumping, and following the birds. Playing hide-and-go-seek around the large boulders becomes one of our guests’ favorite games. Look into the eyes of our guests, and they will tell you how the goodness of creation shines during spring. The world’s a very magical place, and the back play yard of Ms. C’s is no exception. Because of the long winter, we all have cabin fever, including our canine kids. Don’t coop them up or make them stay home by themselves while you are at work. Plan their spring vacation. Make a reservation at Ms. C’s for day or overnight camp, where lots of time is spent enjoying the outdoors. Your four-legged kids’ eyes will be smiling continually and not just on St. Patrick’s Day.

Theatre, in partnership with The Ritchie Company, presents Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr. now through March 12: Thursdays and Fridays at 7 pm, Saturdays at 1 and 5 pm, and Sundays at 3 pm. The play is a live onstage version of the smash Broadway musical adapted from the classic animated film, especially written for ages four and older. Based on the original Broadway production that ran for more than 13 years and was nominated for nine Tony Awards and the Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr. is a fantastic adaptation of the story of transformation and tolerance. The classic story entwines Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, with the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end, and he will be transformed to his former

self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and his household will be doomed for all eternity. The play is performed by 25 talented young actors from ages 9 to 16. Emma Lesniewski, a junior at South-Doyle High, will portray Belle, and Keegan Stump, a freshman at Bearden High, plays the Beast. Four actors are making their KCT debuts: Tarrin Chambers, Isabella

Murrell, Mary Simpson Stone, and Meredith Van Leuven. The rest of the cast includes Natalia Adams, Ben Barber, Karlee Beets, Eliza Kate Bonneville, Hallie Boring, Eason Bullard, Joseph Coram, Isabelle Hannah, Cate Harper, Maddy Grace Payne, Brycen Ritchie, Laura Snyder, Jacob Sousley, Keegan Spurr, Simeon Thress, Grant Trivette, Ethan Turbyfill, Derrick Washington, Jr., and Olivia Wilson. The play marks the directorial debut of Wheeler Moon, a junior at West High, who has been interning at KCT for the past year. N 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary

touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters – love.

OCAL ARTIST, Cynthia Richesin,

credits her creative photography craft to her very special interests in science, the arts, and her love of the outdoors. Growing up in East Tennessee, surrounded by our mist shrouded Great Smoky Mountains, abundant lakes, and picturesque rolling countryside, has provided a rich source of inspiration for Cynthia’s love of photography. After many years of sharing her photography with many friends who told her that she has an innate talent and eye for capturing the unique beauty and character of rural Tennessee, Cynthia decided that it was time to share her passion for photography with others. Her photographic philosophy is to be vigilant and wait for that special moment to capture the beauty of God’s creations in action, whether it is a kayaker conquering the wildness of a waterfall ride or a meandering bee landing on a flower for its rich nectar and carrying the pollen from the stamens to the next flower for pollination. Now you too can enjoy samples of Cynthia’s photography, which are currently on display at Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater. Also, don’t forget to mark your calendars for Gallery on Main’s next special event, “Art and Crafts Around the Park,” which is scheduled for the last full weekend in April. Our goal is to partner this year’s event with studio tours of other local artists’ studios as well. To be a displayer in this upcoming event, call Gallery on Main at 423337-7400. We welcome all kinds of art and crafts created by each artist and crafter.

N THE FASHION business, we

always say, “This is show business, and the curtain rises five times a year. Get your act together… it’s show time!” At The Lily Pad, we’re ready for the act of springtime… renewal, rebirth… with warm sunny days heralding the arrival of the new season! This spring is all about freshness and color… sunshine yellow, grassy green, Mediterranean blue… bright, happy colors to brighten your day and your wardrobe! A lot of versatility is available this season; tops that transition from day into evening, from one outfit to another, from slacks to jeans. It’s still a jacket and top season, although dresses are making a great comeback for spring. Season perfect… hippie fashion and fun sportswear! As a baby boomer who remembers all too well from my store in the ’70s, I love the femininity of the styles this season. Perhaps a resurgence of fashion from the late ’70s and early ’80s was inevitable since our country is again at a crossroads of sorts… a time of revolution and new perspective. This is a time of re-commitment from each of us at The Lily Pad to continue to bring

to your friends and family. We’re honored to support your charities and the causes that are important to you. We’re flattered that you recognize the quality of the excellence that we strive each day to bring to our store… the merchandise selections displayed for you in a way that’s easily related to your wardrobe and in the staff that welcomes you each time you shop. Springtime ’17… a time of fun in fashion, independent thinking, and pushing your imagination! Be adventurous, and remember the magic of fashion! Happy shopping! to you a fashion forward look at a moderate price, with the unsurpassed customer service that you’ve become accustomed to. Now, more than ever, we’re committed to being the store you’re pleased to introduce

Medical Center in less than a year when she received a bouquet from Random Acts of Flowers. “My mom had been by my side the whole time,” said Rachel. “We were so touched that we both broke down in tears. I believe she needed that moment as much as I did.” Thanks to the past generosity of area businesses and community leaders, Random Acts of Flowers has brought hope and encouragement to some of most vulnerable members of our community – those dealing with injury, illness, and the aging process. At Random Acts of Flowers, our mission is to improve the emotional health and overall well-being of individuals in healthcare and assisted living facilities by delivering recycled flowers and personal moments of kindness. Our healing bouquets of recycled flowers have touched the lives of almost 70,000 individuals

facing frightening healthcare challenges – from cancer, heart disease, and diabetes to neurological disorders, physical disabilities, and memory loss. Nationally, we have served more than 185,000 recipients. With each delivery, we know we have a meaningful impact not only on the recipient, but on family members, caregivers, and our devoted volunteers. Random Acts of Flowers – Knoxville is currently seeking committed patrons to help us further our mission throughout Knoxville and the surrounding counties. Your gift matters now more than ever, as we shift our fundraising approach away from hosting special events – activities that distract us from our true mission – and streamline our operation to focus entirely on our mission. VERDINE WHITE O

NE OF THE MOST iconic

bands to come out of the ‘70s was Earth, Wind & Fire. Their first huge hit, “Shining Star,” took our school – and the whole world – by a dancing storm. Fast-forward to today, and the band has repeatedly toured the world and has reportedly sold 100 million records. With a couple of their songs hitting the 2016 movies, Dr. Strange and Trolls, Earth, Wind & Fire is reaching all-new audiences and creating another generation of lifelong fans. The founder and genius behind Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White, passed away a year ago last month. His musical legacy is still being felt today, and the band honors his memory by carrying on its mission of blessing the masses with their iconic hits. Leading that mission is Maurice’s kid brother, Verdine White, who has been with the band since its inception as bass player. To say that Verdine is not only exceptionally talented but also high-energy would be a severe understatement. The man doesn’t stop from the moment he hits the stage until the final bow. Earth, Wind & Fire is on tour and will be performing at the Tennessee Theatre on March 21st. To talk about the tour and other Earth, Wind & Fire news, I called Verdine at his California home. With the band having been around for almost 50 years, I started by asking Verdine if he thought that the band would last that long or that the songs would still stand so well. “No, not at all,” he said. “When you first start, you hope to get a couple of hits and things like that. You just hope for the best, 30

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2017

and then I thought I’d go back to teach and go back to school. But every year obviously got better and better and better. We have to thank my late brother, Maurice, for that. You know he passed away last year in February. He was the one with the vision. We’re just basically following the blueprint that he laid out.” Discussing the current tour, Verdine shared what fans can expect at the shows. “Well, it’s going to be a great show,” he said. “A lot of great energy. A lot of great songs. We’re on our fifth generation. Our music’s everywhere. One of the things we did is we have three songs in two of the biggest movies that came out before Christmas. Dr. Strange with Shining Star, and we also did the Trolls soundtrack with Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick. We have three songs in the number one and number two movies in the whole world – back-to-back, same weekend. “The other day my wife and I were at dinner, and a woman brought her three-year-old daughter to take pictures, because she had just seen the Trolls movie and was doing backflips in the theater. A three year old! And the parents brought them! They had just left the Trolls movie and said, ‘Can we take a picture?

Can we take a picture?’ That’s amazing, isn’t it? That’s really a blessing and shows you the power of songs.” As Verdine mentioned, his brother, Maurice, passed away a year ago. I asked what thoughts he would share about him. “That he was a great person, first of all,” he said. “He was a wonderful brother. He was just a great person. All those things first. And, of course, he was just a marvelously talented person! He was the best big brother that anybody could ever have. If it hadn’t been for him, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing.” As for what’s on the band’s radar for the next year or two, Verdine said, “We haven’t really thought about it yet. The most things we’re doing right now is getting ready for the tour, and then we’ll take it from there.” As for the band’s legacy, Verdine shared, “When you’re at this point in your career, that’s the question you get. If you were a young act, you wouldn’t give them that question. I think it’s still in process, you know what I’m sayin’? That’s my answer. It’s an obvious question to people like us when you’ve been around for quite some time. I think it still begs to be written. People ask me about Maurice’s legacy, and I say that it’s still being written. “One of the things that I tell young artists who come up to me is that I tell them to take care of themselves. Take care of themselves! Start now! That’s the one thing that I do say. I always say, ‘Stay strong! Stay healthy!’ That’s what I tell the younger artists when they come up to me.” You can read the extended version of this interview at www.boomerocity.com.

I saw ‘Whoa Nellie’ was with Dr. Michael Dirr at the University of Georgia’s Horticulture Research Farm in 2011. It was a hot day in July, and the bright glow of this holly’s beautiful foliage set me on fire. I had to have one! A few days later I bought one at a nursery in Atlanta and planted it in the University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson, that winter. Although the holly was named by Tony Avent, Dirr found the gold leaf selection as a branch sport on ‘Nellie R. Stevens’ on the Georgia campus. Whoa Nellie’s bright gold foliage contrasts with its older, inner dark-green leaves. For the best gold color, this holly should be grown in full sun. More than a few hours of shade will diminish its glow. A male pollinator such as ‘Edward J. Stevens’ or one of the Chinese hollies (Ilex cornuta) should be growing within 100 yards if you want to have bright red berries in the late fall and winter. ‘Whoa Nellie’ makes an outstanding single specimen in your landscape, as well as a shining light in a mixed screen planting. Its evergreen foliage also works well as cut greenery and will

brighten any Christmas arrangement. With no supplemental water, the ‘Whoa Nellie’ in the UT Gardens, Jackson, has grown to about six feet tall in about five years. A slightly younger plant can be seen growing along Neyland Drive in the UT Gardens, Knoxville. Under average garden conditions, you can expect this holly to reach between 10 and 12 feet tall by six to eight feet wide in about 10 years. Just like its mother plant ‘Nellie R. Stevens’, ‘Whoa Nellie’ is a tough long-lived specimen that is hardy to zone 6. It is not the easiest plant to find for sale, but an online search will provide a persistent shopper some options. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www. ag.tennessee.edu/utg. Photo by J. Reeves, courtesy UTIA

in human resources management, venturing out to the world of business ownership didn’t seem so scary. I’ve always heard that everything you do in life prepares you for the next chapter. Little did I realize that those years spent working with budgets, payroll taxes, negotiations, and problem-solving would serve me well in the furniture business. Yes, there was some uncertainty and anxiety about opening my own business; however, in retrospect, I wonder why I ever had any doubt. It wasn’t just me though. Amish Excellence would not be possible without rich blessings from God and the support and encouragement from my husband, Bobby. Thanks to many first-time and loyal customers, our success during the first year was far greater than what we had hoped for. We exceeded every goal within the first eight months and are grateful for the support and confidence customers placed in us. April marks the celebration of our first year in business. During the month, we will

be offering several unadvertised specials as our way of saying “thank you” for choosing Amish Excellence. I would like to extend a personal invitation for you to visit our showroom to see the beauty of real solid American hardwood furniture. It’s the only furniture we sell. We do not offer imports, laminates, pressboard,

I am proud of the strong relationships we have developed with the Amish craftsmen. It is the critical element in customizing heirloom quality furniture that will complement your home or office for many years. The customer’s specifications and details are provided directly to the individual who will be making the furniture piece. This also allows us to offer superior quality furniture at the best possible value. Please come in to see what all the excitement is about! It’s our one year anniversary, and we promise you’ll find something you will love in the Amish Excellence design showroom. most about selecting tile and stone is the almost limitless selection from around the world that there is to select from. The tile and stone you select will h e l p c re a t e the character and ambiance of every room in your home, so you’ll want to carefully select a supplier that offers far more options than the local box store. Here are just a few of the newest tile and stone arrivals you’ll discover at Exact Tile’s Design Boutique: »Walker Zanger’s Andalucia Collection features dimensional glazed terracotta tile designed with layered shapes through repetition. Each pattern balances delicate filagree-like details on a larger scale tile to create a timeless, traditional look in a fresh, modern shape. » Marble Systems’ Marsala Collection pays homage to the lively, imperfect nature of the handmade tile. Taking inspiration from 19th and 20th Century Sicilian Baldosa style tiles, this new line delivers a rich crackle finish, hand-painted detail, and the distressed beauty that one would expect from handmade tiles. » The Tabula Momento Collection is an Italian designed and manufactured highly stylized porcelain tile available in a variety of shades, profiles, and sizes. Part of their made-to-order program, chevron porcelain mosaics are without the maintenance of natural stone, offering a clean, fluid, water colored wood look. » Marble Systems’ New Aqua Forte Collection uses a unique artisan technique where organic or intentional patterns are etched into natural stone using multiple etching and engraving methods. After the etching process, the stones are hand-colorized, gilded, or glazed with natural and organic dyes and materials to deliver a uniquely beautiful result. These newest arrivals are just a few of the hundreds of tile and stone products Exact Tile has to offer that you won’t find anywhere else. of Everything Knoxville, we continue our “Discover” series on interior design, answering the most frequently asked questions regarding your home’s living and family rooms. What should I do with my home’s open floor plan? Open floor plans can be tricky to design around, but the key is to create zones rather than simply filling it with furniture. Leave passageways and flow through the spaces to create points of intimacy, and consider anchoring furniture arrangements with rugs. I love the look of a crisp linen sofa, but does that work in the real world? Believe it or not, there are a variety of options available to you to achieve the feel of that linen sofa while still being able to relax in your home’s living room. Do I dare mount our family TV over it? You can, but it may create some problems that you might not have anticipated. The placement of multiple wires and devices are often a last minute thought that can detract from what is otherwise a beautiful focal point. March in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

S

PRING IS IN THE AIR!

Well, it has actually been in the air on and off since January. Spring and winter temperatures have alternated like a rollercoaster, and I don’t expect that to stop anytime soon. Historically, our average last frost is still mid-April. Ignore that date to your own peril, folks. I’ve seen people spend hundreds of dollars on flowers in an abnormally warm March, only to replace them a month later. If you insist on planting early, however, we will be happy to sell you plants twice! Let’s talk about things you can/should do outside this month: » Early March is a great time for planning and preparing. Take a nice walk around on a sunny day, and let your imagination wander. (If you don’t have an imagination, grab a friend who does, or just take pictures and bring them in to us.) Plan where you want to plant things this year, and make notes or do a quick sketch. Then prepare the area by cleaning it up, getting rid of weeds, and amending your soil. » Late March is a good time to plant and transplant trees, shrubs, and vines. I suggest waiting until then because

there’s less time for Mother Nature’s early spring temper tantrums to do damage but still enough time for root systems to establish before summer heat arrives. » You can sow cool season vegetables (peas, cruciferous veggies, and potatoes) in the ground, and start tender vegetables, herbs, and annuals inside. We have a nice selection of seeds and seed starting products if you need them. Please don’t rush warm season plants by putting them out too early! » You can plant spring blooming perennials to perk up your yard. You can also plant pansies, snapdragons, and other cool season annuals now. » If you planted pansies last fall, they need a boost of fertilizer now. They are heavy feeders, so either put down fresh slow release fertilize (like Osmocote) or plan on fertilizing with a water soluble product every two weeks. » Since I brought up fertilizing, trees, shrubs, and lawn grass can be fertilized now if you’re using an organic product such as Holly Tone. If you’re using a non-organic, please wait until late March. Non-organics have a faster

response, and new growth can be nipped by temperature drops. Also, wait until late March to fertilize perennials. » Some bulbs have been blooming since February, so add a good bulb fertilizer or bone meal to help them store up energy for next spring. Don’t cut the foliage off until it yellows, or your blooms will be drastically reduced next year. » Our Pruning Workshop will be on March 4th at 10 am. Please come to it before you go out and just start whacking away at your plants. Yes, it’s time to prune. No, you shouldn’t go out and start chopping like you’re trapped in a jungle and have to cut your way out! Education is key, my friends. » If you haven’t trimmed your grasses and groundcovers, you can do that now. You can run over small grasses and groundcovers with your lawnmower set on its tallest setting or use a string trimmer. Leave a few inches on taller grasses to protect the tender new shoots. » I mentioned weeding above, but let’s talk a little about herbicides. I beg you to please read the directions! If you spray when it’s too cold or before a rain, you’ve wasted your time and money. Consider hand weeding or using natural products when possible. It’s great exercise. » How is your mulch situation? If you don’t need to apply more, fluff what you have left with a rake so that water will penetrate. It can become very compacted during the winter. If you’re re-applying, remember to only go about three inches deep, and do not pile it up around your plants. Donuts, not volcanoes! I also put down a couple of layers of newspaper underneath mine to further deter weeds. » I’ll end with a reminder to feed the birds. They are running out of food sources now, so you need to check your feeders daily. Black oil sunflower seed mixes, suet, and other high fat foods are best while it’s cold. Bluebirds and other fruit lovers will appreciate a mix with fruit. Finches want niger or thistle seed. Please keep the feeders clean, because moldy seed can be toxic. It’s also time to get nesting boxes ready by cleaning out debris from last season. Repair or replace old, worn out houses. We have a really wonderful workshop schedule this spring, so sign up early for classes you would like to attend. As always, don’t hesitate to call or stop by with your questions!

Free Inspections… Termites Swarming Soon!

T

HE COST of termite repair is higher

than the cost of termite control! Termites are known as “silent destroyers” because of their ability to chew through wood, flooring, and other cellulose materials undetected 24/7! Dayton’s termite inspectors know exactly how to spot even the smallest signs of a termite infestation. As the weather turns warm, termites start to swarm by the hundreds and thousands, and they look like winged ants. Favorite places termites enter your house are through cracks, expansion joints, foam insulation below ground, inside or between hollow brick or concrete blocks, and through spaces around plumbing pipes. Since a termite colony can multiply to about 50,000 in population, imagine the extent of damage they can cause! The National Pest Management Association estimates that termites cause $5 billion in property damage annually and recommends using a professional pest control company to evaluate the severity of the infestation and what type of treatment is needed. Dayton’s does termite inspections for FREE, and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, since termite damage is usually not covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy. New customers will receive $150 OFF a Termidor® HP Injection System through April. Other services Dayton’s provides include convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, monthly/ quarterly/one-time pest control services, pest control for ants/wasps/bedbugs, carpenter bee control (April-Aug), mosquito control (May-Oct), fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing/mitigation.

JAMES GREGORY March 18 at 8 pm Bijou Theatre

F

OR DECADES, the unforgettable caricature of veteran comedian James Gregory has stood grinning: His shirt untucked, his arms outstretched, a carefree welcome to a down-home, hilarious comedy experience. It’s storytelling at its best. The trademark caricature is the essence of humorist James Gregory’s comedy: Rib-tickling reflections on life from the front porch. James does not “tip-toe” through life as if he’s walking on broken glass or egg shells. That style is evident on stage as well. He is not politically correct. Much of his humor is centered on brilliant observations of crazy relatives and people obsessed with the slightest change in weather conditions – now referred to as global warming. He delights in poking fun at modern sensitive parents and out-of-control environmentalists. The James Gregory show turns the clock back to a time when life was simpler; to a better time, before the death of common

sense; a time when people sat on the front porch and actually talked to each other without a cell phone in their ear. James’ success, like his comedy, is the direct result of the values he grew up with. And now, 20 something years later, it is this unique brand of humor that packs the crowds into his sold-out shows. The absence of vulgarity sets James apart, and his stories are carefully crafted art. “I have lived long enough to know people, know life,” said James. “My comedy is based on my life experiences. It’s real, it’s funny, and the audience loves it. That’s why I’m still in business.”

Making the Best of Reclaimed Wood

R

ECLAIMED WOOD is

the best way to recycle wooden articles from old, unused, dilapidated, or just plain neglected barns, warehouses, etc. This indirectly leads to a decline in the demand for new wood from the forests of this endangered world we live in today. There are various ways of making the best out of reclaimed wood, most of the times in building the parts of a new house. Whether it’s re-building your urban home to give it a rustic feel or building yourself a country cabin in the woods, nothing can replace the aged feel and color tone of reclaimed wood. Everyone loves the warmth and homey feel that a good flooring can provide in your dwelling. Well, Plantation Reclaimed wood makes for the best flooring surface ever. There are various types of woods that will provide character to any area of the home. Tobacco Road is one such type, which was used by the free men of this country during the 19th and early 20th century. Farmers (primarily tobacco farmers) living in the most fertile valleys of Pennsylvania used a mixture of species and built sidings and roof rafters for their barns, where they would dry the harvest, which in return gave the pine wood its heavy color and with regular weathering and stains gave its character. Hence, wood reclaimed from these barns is termed Tobacco Road. The Southern Reclaimed Heart Pine, recognized by its rich yellow tone and the best in grain quality, is an ode to the American manufacturing era. These were beams in most of the biggest manufacturing mills of this country. The mighty oak tree and its strength is the very symbol of the American barn that eventually led to the greatness that it upholds. Resawn beams from the oldest of barns are used to create the best of oak hardwood wide planks that will give your home the warmth it deserves. Fireplace mantels provide character and style to your fireplace like no other. Built with reclaimed wood, these give the area a natural and contemporary form. Hand-hewn antique mantels are sourced from wood that is aged naturally as they were tried and tested as structural timber. These still bear the axe marks from the time they were cut and shaped. Rough sawn antique mantels bear the axe marks of the pioneer age, when the industry was beginning to take shape. The mantels are proof of the long tradition of American wood craftsmanship. Antique barn sidings, full of rusty nail holes and deep textures, can give the interior or exterior unparalleled and ageless beauty that cannot be matched by processed wood types. They can

be found in various types, ranging from the grey-brown antique barn siding, to the faded grey barn siding, to the all-naturally faded red barn siding, and finally the faced planed exterior barn siding. Reclaimed beams have also been proven to make excellent tiles. Yes, you read that right. Wood tiles are all the rage and gives the area it is being used in a whole new dimension.

Contact us today to see how you can incorporate reclaimed wood products into your home or business. It will certainly add oneof-a-kind, unique character to any area!

homeowners who have recently visited friends and relatives that have installed an underdecking system on their home’s raised deck. I think it’s the appealing aesthetics that first catch their eye. Let’s face it: The underside of a deck as viewed from the patio below is dreary at best. If you have ever investigated underdecking systems, you’ve already discovered that there are a variety of options to choose from. That’s why I would like to highlight a system that I truly believe you will find superior to any other system available. First of all, we don’t purchase “off-the-shelf” components. All of the materials we install at your home were manufactured and fabricated at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. We use only 22 gauge galvanized steel coated with a Dura Coat polyester paint. Many of our competitors use a light gauge aluminum substitute. Our patented system does not attach itself to the underside of your deck. Our system is fully supported by our gutter system that is installed along the perimeter of your raised deck. This promotes the free circulation of air that aides in the drying of your deck’s support joists. All we install is Undercover Systems’ patented decking systems. We are not remodeling contractors. All of our installers are factory trained and certified. I think that what our clients appreciate most is that I, Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems of Tennessee, personally supervise each and every installation. In fact, I often help install our patented underdecking system as well. If you have ever considered installing an underdeck system under your home’s raised deck, I invite you to discover why Undercover Systems is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and why we have received the much coveted Consumers’ Choice Award and Green Business Certification. Available in a variety of color options and our premium bead board design, discover how you can better enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces by protecting your family from unexpected rain and the searing sun with Undercover Systems’ patented underdecking system.

Mudrooms Ensure a Good First Impression

A

S THE SAYING goes, “You never

get a second chance to make a first impression.” And it’s true. From interviewing for a job to a new relationship, first impressions are important. And first impressions include the feelings the entryway to your house makes on your guests and family members. If your entryway is cluttered, it can set a negative tone for the rest of the house. In fact, one of the most important areas of the house to keep neat is the entrance. If you always enter and exit through disorder, you’ll carry that clutter – emotionally and physically – into the rest of your home and out into the world. Having a clean entryway and garage will flow into the rest of your home and life. A custom built-in mudroom cabinet provides a go-to zone for family organization and efficiency. It is now a common feature in both new and renovated homes. The builtin should be tailored to your family’s specific needs, adding convenience and storage for everyday items. From places for shoes, to sweaters, to umbrellas, and the dog leash, everything has its place so you’re more organized and it’s a more welcoming experience for everyone. The key features to consider are: » Bench: You need a place to sit down to take your shoes on and off or simply put

» Shoe storage: Most of us have multiple pairs of footwear we wear at any given time of the year, so incorporating lots of shoe storage for each person is important. » Lots of hooks: Including sturdy hooks throughout the space provides a place to put almost everything, including heavy backpacks. » Outlets with USB ports: This feature means even your phone has a place to call its own! » Style: A mudroom is a transitional space, so the built-in needs to be user friendly, as well as attractive and inviting. If your older home doesn’t have space inside for a builtin, consider putting it just outside the door in the garage. If your entryway or mudroom needs a complete overhaul or just some sprucing up, now is the perfect time for Tailored Living of Knoxville to provide custom design to maximize your space for functionality and a fabulous new look! down a bag of groceries. A bench should be approximately 17 inches high, which is standard chair height. » Individual sections: Assign one section of the mudroom built-in to each member of the family. You’ll save a lot of valuable time getting out the door each morning.

Is Your Grout a Sponge?

of grout between your tiles is a very important part of your tile. Without it, anything spilled on your floors would start an ecosystem of its own. Your grout is your first line of defense against soil, dirt, and liquids. A properly sealed grout line will protect the integrity of your floors, but a tile and grout floor that has not been sealed acts like a sponge, soaking up every nasty spill and particle of dirt it comes into contact with. New grout should always be properly sealed, cleaned regularly, and a new application of sealer should be applied every 12-24 months thereafter. Cleaning your grout can be tricky. Scrubbing the grout may remove dirt in the surface of the grout but not eliminate the stain. Stains can then creep back to the surface again, causing frustration to the homeowner. Bathrooms pose the toughest challenge, since this room tends to be damp and provides a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, and mildew. Chemicals can cause

Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces More Often

A

RE YOU READY to let the great out-

of-doors in? The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless possibilities to enjoy your home’s backyard experience. In East Tennessee, homeowners are creating more and more outdoor living spaces, yet are you really enjoying your new spaces to their full potential? In many parts of the country, if your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners are increasingly adding outdoor “rooms,” such as porches and lanais with kitchens, complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from enjoying their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide a solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy being outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of biting insects that can spoil your family’s evening events. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s aesthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of today’s retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help to blend your screens with your home’s existing interior or exterior color schemes. MERICANS HAVE a passion for the

subdued colors and intricate patterns of meticulously hand-woven Oriental rugs. These rugs have found a special place in nearly every room in our home. One common problem shared among Oriental rug owners, however, is how often the rug should be washed and, even more importantly, who you should trust to wash them. You see, genuine Oriental rugs cannot be cleaned like their wall-to-wall, synthetic-based carpeting cousins. Oriental rugs have two unique qualities. These rugs are durable, often lasting for centuries when properly cared for, making them family heirlooms. But because these rugs are handmade using allnatural fibers and organic and vegetable dyes, they can be permanently damaged when washed by those unfamiliar with proper Oriental rug washing techniques. Despite the growth in popularity of Oriental rugs, the rug washing industry has not grown proportionately. That means that there is an abundance of both inexperienced and unqualified trades people in the marketplace that are representing themselves as Oriental rug washing experts. Don’t judge the qualifications of the rug washer by the end result, which might be a permanently damaged rug. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we combine my more than 30 years of experience with our state-of-the-art Oriental rug washing boutique that utilizes our proprietary 11-step rug washing system. I personally inspect and supervise each and every rug we wash, and we adjust our process to meet the specific requirements to each rug. Some important steps included in our 11-step rug washing process include: » Pre-inspection » Dye stabilization test » Pre-conditioning » Washing using only soft water » Adjusting your rug’s pH » Drying in controlled chamber » Grooming & combing » Fringe cleaning These are just a few of the steps required to safely and thoroughly clean your valuable Oriental rugs. If the company you select doesn’t offer these services, you may have selected the wrong company. To view our informative video on the art of Oriental rug washing, I invite you to visit www. superiorofknoxville.com.

Exterior Home Improvements Yield Higher ROI for Less Money, Report Shows A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

ENOVATION SEASON

is approaching. Do you know what home improvements will give you the best return for your money? Here’s a hint: Step outside. You might assume upgrades to interior spaces like kitchens and bathrooms have the best payoff, but most home improvements don’t return 100% of their value at the time of resale. Those that yield the best return on investment for the most modest costs are generally exterior improvements. Outside the box Interior projects like a minor kitchen renovation or bathroom upgrade return a decent percentage of your initial investment when you sell your home - about 80% and 65%, respectively, according to Remodeling’s Cost vs. Value report. However, they can also cost tens of thousands of dollars. By contrast, exterior projects like adding a deck or replacing a garage door deliver similar high rates of return but for far less cost. Adding a composite deck can cost around $17,000 and yield an ROI of more than 65%,

while a garage door typically costs less than $2,000 and returns nearly 77% of your investment when you sell. In fact, six of the eight improvements with the best ROI on Remodeling’s report were exterior projects, and their average payback was nearly 75%. Top exterior projects Here are popular exterior projects that offer high ROI, according to the Cost vs. Value report: » Roof replacement: A midrange roof replacement costs approximately $20,000 and returns nearly 69% of the investment. What’s more, a new roof helps protect your entire home from weather damage and can improve curb appeal. » Composite deck addition: Costs vary, but Remodeling bases its evaluation of ROI on a cost of about $17,000. At that price, adding a composite deck delivers ROI of 65.2%. Of course the value of your deck will depend on many factors, including the quality of the building products you choose. » Siding replacement: Another exterior

feature that protects the whole home and greatly affects its curb appeal, new siding can cost around $14,500. When you sell your home, that new siding will recoup about 76% of your initial investment. » Garage door replacement: Older garage doors may lack modern insulating qualities, and a shabby-looking door can drag down the look of your home. Replacing the garage door costs roughly $1,700 and returns nearly 77% of that amount at the time of resale. » Steel entry door: The single exterior home improvement with the greatest ROI is also one of the cheapest and easiest to do. Replacing a wooden door with a steel entry door will run you about $1,400 and you’ll recoup more than 90% of that cost when you sell your home. Exterior home improvements not only enhance your enjoyment of your home and help maintain its security, but they’re also the first things potential buyers see when they pull up to the curb. When you want to make cost-effective, high-ROI improvements, making exterior upgrades is money well spent.

5 Easy Tips to Prepare Your Family for the Daylight Saving Time Change A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

AYLIGHT SAVING T I M E brings brighter eve-

nings and a reminder that spring and warmer weather are within reach. However, it comes with the potential to wreak havoc on a family’s sleep routine. Time changes can make morning schedules just a little bit harder for parents everywhere. “A time change shifts our body’s normal schedule, and losing an hour of sleep during daylight saving time can be a tough transition for moms and their families,” said Shannon Wright, a registered dietitian and wellness expert for Natrol, a market leader of vitamins and supplements. Despite this, daylight saving time may be just the right time to reset sleep routines and get family schedules back on track. “Use this time change as a reason to start implementing a better nighttime routine for the entire family,” said Wright. “If adults do not get the seven to nine hours of sleep the body needs, it can have significant consequences such as decreased mood, poor performance at work, and an increase in accidents can occur.” To help families get through this time change adjustment, Wright recommends these tips and tricks to help ease into the transition and

54

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2017

Daylight Saving Time for 2017 begins on March 12th. Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour. get the best night’s sleep possible: 1. Stay consistent. Develop a nightly routine to help regulate your body’s sleep and wake schedule. Aim to go to bed and wake up around the same time every day, even on weekends. This can help support your body’s natural sleep cycle and also support the body’s release of melatonin, which helps put you to sleep and promotes more restful sleep. 2. Limit nighttime screen time. Unwinding with your favorite TV shows or reading the latest news on your smartphone or tablet can seem like a nice way to ease into falling asleep once the kids are in bed, but it can hinder your sleep if you do it within an hour of bedtime. The blue light release from these various technological devices can actually trick your brain into thinking it is daytime, and

your body will delay its release of melatonin. 3. Step outside. Use that extra daylight to spend some quality time outside with your family. Research suggests a correlation between exercise and a good night’s rest. You can even use a pedometer or step monitor to ensure you’re moving your body enough throughout the day. Challenge your family to be more active, and your whole family will be getting more sleep. 4. Create an environment for sleep. A perfect sleep environment should be dark, quiet, and cool so you can fall asleep faster and stay asleep. If you have challenges with any of these factors, invest in some blackout curtains, ear plugs, or a fan. 5. Get support with a melatonin supplement. Various factors can affect the natural production of melatonin in our bodies such as age, diet, time changes, and stress. Supplementing with melatonin can help establish normal sleep patterns to give you a more restful, relaxing sleep and in turn, better overall health. Keep in mind that everyone’s body is different, so use these tips and be patient. Before long, moms and their families will be fully rested and ready to tackle their busy days.

S DIRECTOR of Education

for Knox Heritage, I get to do a number of interesting tasks that make every day something fun and different. One of my favorite things to do is research, particularly historic architecture and the people who designed, built, worked, and lived in these buildings. I get a lot of inquiries from many individuals who are interested in learning about the history of buildings. The nice thing is that someone doesn’t have to have a history degree to do this; it can be done by anyone at a local library. Knoxville is very fortunate to be home to the Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection (not to be confused with the Frank H. McClung Museum, a wonderful museum on the campus of the University of Tennessee). The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is the local history and genealogy department of the Knox County Public Library and housed on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center on Gay Street. The McClung is home to a large collection of regional history and historic documents, and it is a top-notch genealogy research library. Some of its resources include newspapers, maps, manuscripts, government records, books, historic photographs, free access to web-based genealogical databases, and that’s just the beginning. The McClung makes it easy for anyone to visit. It is open every day, but the times will

56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2017

be different depending on the day of the week. With helpful and friendly staff, fast service, and quiet corners to delve into a genealogy book or historic manuscript, anyone can find something to be excited about at the McClung. If you are starting to research your family’s genealogy or just have some spare time one day, plan a visit and take one of the free introductions to internet genealogy classes. Find out who lived in your house in 1925, or check out where your grandmother lived in the 1940 U.S. Census. Make a day of it, and while you’re downtown, have lunch on Market Square, shop for bulk candy at the Mast General Store, or see a show at the historic Tennessee Theatre. So many changes have been taking place in downtown Knoxville, and your research on local history at the McClung will most likely make you want to explore more of this historic area. For those wanting to explore the McClung online, they make it easy for you to look at historic images right from the comforts of your own home with its online digital collection. Spend hours hunting down historic images from Knoxville and East Tennessee. You can even purchase photos in a number of different ways. My favorite collection is the Thompson Photograph Collection taken by Knoxville’s own professional photographer, Jim Thompson. I also suggest exploring the Knox County Two Centuries Photograph Collection, a group

of more than 3,000 historic images owned by more than 200 Knox County citizens and organizations collected in 1991 for the 200th birthday of Knox County. For fans of Victorian architect George Barber, you will be excited to know that the digital collection has a wonderful group of architectural plan books and documents to review. Next time it’s raining and you’re looking for something to do, visit www.cmdc.knoxlib.org and start exploring. The Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection is located on the third floor of the East Tennessee History Center, located at 601 S. Gay Street. Open every day, admission is free to the public. For more information, visit www. knoxlib.org, email mcclung@knoxlib.org, or call 865-215-8801. To learn more about researching historic homes, join us at Historic Westwood, located at 3425 Kingston Pike, on March 11 from 10 to 11:30 am for our Preservation Network series. It is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.knoxheritage.org. Knox Heritage works to preserve structures and places with historic or cultural significance. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, Knox Heritage is charted by the State of Tennessee and governed by a board of directors representing all areas of the community. Among its programs of work are the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance, the Knox Heritage Salvage Shop, and Historic Westwood.

Is Your Investment Portfolio Keeping Up with Record Market Gains?

BY JUSTIN GOODBRE AD, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PL ANNER™

T

HE MEDIA is great at reporting

everyday events but often falls short when reporting on financial matters. Recently we welcomed a new client to our firm that had previously worked with a stockbroker. This client had experienced negative growth on a large seven-figure account at the same time equity markets showed a 7% return. That client’s broker attempted to time the market, resulting in a six-figure missed opportunity. This type of experience isn’t as uncommon as you might expect. Many of our clients previously placed their faith in these mediahyped brokers that often fail to deliver on their promises. CXO Advisory Group, a Virginia-based research company, compared 6,582 forecasts from 68 financial experts from 2005 to 2012 and found they were accurate only 47% of the time. A recent report found that 58% of investors are sitting on cash. That’s a lot of missed investment opportunities, especially when

you consider that the DJIA recently broke 21,000 points. So why aren’t people investing? There’s a myriad of reasons ranging from the fear that the market might decline as predicted by the doomsayers or perhaps they had a negative experience like the client I described earlier. Regardless, their indecisiveness cost them a lot of money. In Napoleon Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich,” he discusses the fear of poverty as it relates to our money; the fear of extreme loss that prevents people from investing. There are two extremes: The extreme of greed and fear, both of which can spell disaster. In either case, a quality, blended portfolio could have produced an acceptable rate of return while minimizing risk. As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, day-to-day trading or timing the market doesn’t make sense to me. In my opinion, you’ll experience better returns if you follow fundamental portfolio management techniques, allowing your earnings to compound. At Heritage Investors, we believe your portfolio should be well-balanced and blended using low

cost ETFs (exchange traded funds) or index funds. We also use specific sectors funds based on current trends along with broad market indexes, strategically allocated, to provide both growth and safety. These are the type of strategies employed by a true wealth planner. If you missed out on last year’s gains, this is the perfect time to review your current investments and past strategies together. You’re invited to take advantage of our free, no-obligation, complimentary consultation to see just how Heritage Investors can help you achieve the returns you’re hoping to achieve.

Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits SUCCESS

On January 12, 2009, our lives were turned upside down when Goody’s closed, where John was an IT manager. Living in a borrowed motor coach and with a contractor building our kennel, our income had just been cut in half. Worried was an understatement! Hearing of our misfortune, Tom from Everything Knoxville helped us to create a cost-effective, well-thought out marketing plan to help us secure potential clients for our new kennel. Everything Knoxville is not just magazines. Behind those publications is a great team of professionals, sharing their personal experiences, inspiring and promoting small businesses like ours. In 2014, Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits was recognized as a top boarding resort and grooming spa in the Knoxville area by the Knoxville News Sentinel Reader’s Choice Award. God has truly blessed us! Outdoor Adventures Offer Out-of-This-World Fun on Florida’s Space Coast HEN WINTER COLD and

snow force you indoors, you might dream of getting away to somewhere warm and sunny that offers plenty of energizing fun and a much-needed change in the weather. Planning for your spring and summer vacations is a great way to score some budget-friendly deals. It also helps you beat the winter blues by giving you something to look forward to. But where do you go you might ask? One great option is Florida’s Space Coast, a destination that, while renowned for its ties to the U.S. space program, also offers an astonishing abundance of adventure-filled, outdoor vacation activities. If you’re starting to explore your spring or summer vacation possibilities, here are some can’t-miss things to do that make the Space Coast an out-of-this-world destination. » Take a nighttime “bioluminescence” kayak tour along the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge or Cocoa Beach. These tours allow you to get up close and personal with some of the glowing creatures 62

who magnificently inhabit the waters along Florida’s Space Coast. » With so many great beaches, the area is an ideal destination for surfers and other water sports enthusiasts. Here you can visit the flagship Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach – a 52,000-square-foot, multilevel store offering a huge selection of surf boards, swimming attire, and other surf-brand apparel. Meanwhile, at the nearby Ron Jon Surf School, you can arrange a surfing lesson or even rent a paddleboard. » Immerse yourself in nature at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, a 140,000-acre park that is home to at least 1,500 species of plants and animals, including alligators, manatees, and a wide variety of birds. If the time of year is right, you can also take a guided nighttime Turtle Walk to observe sea turtles as they lay their eggs. » The region is a paradise for birds, making it the perfect place to host the annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival, normally held early in the year. Birdwatching, or “birding,” is just part of the fun at

the festival, which also offers entertainment, unique dining experiences, special events, and more. » In Titusville, sign up for a Coast-toCoast Bike Tour and get an up-close view of the region’s vibrant wildlife areas and historic sites. Or, for an epic ride, venture out on your own along the Coast-to-Coast Connector Bike Trail. » Get your adrenaline pumping with a zip line aerial tour. Brevard Zoo’s Treetop Trek allows you to zip line, crawl, or climb your way through acre after acre of lush Florida landscape. » The Space Coast is one of the few places you can personally witness a rocket launching into space, and it is breathtaking. Rockets carrying satellites into orbit or transporting cargo to the International Space Station launch periodically throughout the year. You can find the launch schedule at www.SpaceCoastLaunches.com. To learn more about Florida’s Space Coast and to plan your spring or summer getaway, visit www.visitspacecoast.com.

Just Plain Vanilla B Y TO M I R M E N

OW DO YOUR customers or,

more importantly, your potential new customers view your small business? Nothing slows up the line at Baskin Robbins faster than the addition of a new flavor. Customers’ eyes feast on the numerous choices available before selecting that much anticipated flavor that will arouse their taste buds. Meanwhile, over in the corner of the freezer display is poor old vanilla. If your customers and prospective new customers view your small business as poor old vanilla, you had better be prepared for a plain vanilla response. Perhaps it’s because we, as entrepreneurs, invest so much of our day immersed in our daily activities that we take for granted just how unique our companies are. But at the end of the day, if you’re the only one that knows how unique you truly are, you’re just plain old vanilla to consumers. I recently visited with one of the owners of a home improvement company. The quality

Are you that delectable rocky road fudge ice cream or that plain old vanilla relegated to the back of the freezer case? of the work they perform is consistent with the quality offered by their competitors. But they’re unique from their competition in many ways: » They fabricate the product they install. » Their installation time is much faster. » They don’t charge for many of the extra services they provide. » They don’t employ commissioned sales people. I was sold. Unfortunately, very few people

beyond those in attendance at our meeting are aware of how truly unique this small business really is. Plain old vanilla, right? I asked myself, “Just how much has their failure to communicate their unique differentiating characteristics cost them?” I’d say hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. If your small business is experiencing lackluster performance, you’d be welladvised to ask yourself whether anybody beyond your associates knows just how unique you are. The cost of communicating your uniqueness is far less than the sales opportunities you’re missing. Are you that delectable rocky road fudge ice cream or that plain old vanilla relegated to the back of the freezer case?

raged through East Tennessee recently, many future University of Tennessee students lost their possessions, and they had a lot to worry about. Tyler Lewelling wanted to make sure their UT admissions materials weren’t among them. Lewelling, UT’s coordinator of freshman recruitment, was one of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions staff members who visited Gatlinburg-Pittman High School to replace admissions items for 20 students who may have lost them in the fire. “We felt that by replacing admissions information and giving a little extra ‘big orange love’ to these students, it might put their minds at ease so they don’t worry about replacing other items lost in the fire,” said Lewelling. “We want them to feel good about transitioning to college. I know I remember keeping my admission letter from UT; it’s a great keepsake!” Among the items they replaced were the Welcome to Rocky Top musical cards, admission packets, pens, and personalized Future Vol buttons. Lewelling has worked in undergraduate 64

admissions for about five years. He started as an admissions counselor and was promoted to coordinator last summer. His job involves promoting UT at college fairs, fielding questions from potential students, and easing the transition from high school to college for University of Tennessee students. “A typical day would include answering emails and incoming phone calls from future Vols (including their families and high school counselors), reading admissions applications, and meeting with prospective students as they visit campus,” he said. “I often travel throughout East Tennessee, visiting high schools and attending college fairs. We work to help future Vols have a great experience here from application to enrollment!” Lewelling said it meant a lot to him to be able to help future students in need.

We want to help students realize that a great and affordable education is available right here in their city or state. I had a great experience as a student here and I hope that carries over into my

work recruiting future Vols!” “I love being able to work with a diverse group of students from all walks of life,” he said. “I’ve talked to students from private schools, inner-city schools, and rural high schools. We want to help students realize that a great and affordable education is available right here in their city or state. I had a great experience as a student here and I hope that carries over into my work recruiting future Vols!” Anyone who lost a UT diploma or admissions packet in the wildfires should call 865-9741111 to ask about a free replacement.

YOU MAY BE

unfamiliar with the name of this 60+ year old company or its impact on your life. You may know this company better as FICO, the consumer John Fawaz credit company whose FICO score CERTIFIED is used by financial institutions FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and companies alike to decide whether to lend you money or to issue you credit. Did you ever wonder just how FICO scores are determined? Basically, they evaluate a variety of financially related historical data to predict future consumer behavior. Here are some of the criteria and how they are weighed: » Past payment history: 35% » Credit used: 30% » Length of credit history: 15% » New credit requests: 10% » Types of credit used: 10% Would you like to improve your credit score? » Reduce or eliminate credit card debt: As a rule of thumb, use less than one-third of the credit card’s available credit. A $300 charge on a card with a $1,000 limit paid off on time will have a higher credit score than a person that uses the entire amount of available credit, even if they pay the entire balance on time. » Payment history: Pay your bills on time. Delinquent payments can have a negative impact on your score. Once it appears on your credit report, it stays there for seven years. Get current and stay current, and your FICO score will go up. » Avoid new credit cards: We’re all tempted to do this when retail stores offer discounts for charging a big purchase on a new credit card. If the discount is substantial, consider applying for the card and then cancel within a month. Multiple credit cards, even with a zero balance, lower your credit score, because it can increase your income to available debt ratio. What should everyone do? You are entitled to a free credit report to check for any errors or discrepancies. According to the Federal Trade Commission, 42 million Americans have errors on their credit report, resulting in requests for credit to be declined or higher interest rate levied. Working from Home B Y W E N DY FAU L K N E R

I

F YOU WORK from home, you’ve

probably already seen that friends and family can take advantage of your time. Because you’re “at home,” many people assume you’re available and can drop whatever you’re doing to interact with them. Relatives or friends may call you up during work hours or drop by your home with intentions of visiting. If these scenarios happen too often in your life, here are some peoplemanagement tips that can help get things back on track for you. Explain your work Extended family and friends may not grasp that it is possible to work a full-time job from the comforts of your own home. People who haven’t made that switch in their minds may presume that what you’re doing is a hobby and not true employment. Sit down with the friends and relatives that are causing consistent interruptions and explain your work to them. Do this in an easygoing, non-offensive manner, but get the point across that you are operating

a business from your home. Tell them that you’re going to be unavailable for hanging out and phone calls during your work hours – barring some major event or natural disaster of course. If you’re interrupted during these hours, tell the offender you’re “not off ” work yet and to call back or come by later. Eventually your time-offenders will come to see that you really mean business, and they’ll start honoring your work hours. Dealing with household members Sometimes it isn’t friends and extended family members who interrupt your work. It can be your partner or children who aren’t honoring your work time. If your work hours are during times when your family members are also at home, you should set up a work area in your home. Ideally this should be a place where you can have a door that you can close to keep distractions and interruptions to a minimum. If you have young children in your home, you may have to invest in childcare in or out of your home. If it’s your partner or older

children who are interrupting your time, it’s time to sit down for a heart-to-heart talk. Explain that if they can honor your work hours and stay out of your work space, that you’ll finish your work up faster, and the faster you finish, the faster you can give them your undivided attention. Off time When you work from home, it’s easy to let it monopolize your every waking hour, especially in the beginning. Tell yourself that it’s just as important to schedule off time as it is to schedule your work hours. During your off times, you need to get away from your work completely. By doing this, your friends and family will come to see that you do indeed have “off time” and that they are guaranteed a place in your busy schedule. Wedding Guest Etiquette

S

PRING AND SUMMER is

around the corner, and that means we might have multiple weddings to attend. I love attending weddings, and recently I have had the pleasure of attending several. The truth is, however, I have been rather shocked at the behavior and conduct of wedding attendees. For some reason, our society is just not teaching our young people (in particular) important etiquette considerations to remember when attending weddings. Remember, this is one of the most important days in a couple’s life, and because of its importance and significance, those attending must pay close attention that they don’t do anything that would take away from this very special occasion. Here are some important things that we must teach and practice: » Only the names on the wedding invitation should attend. If the invitation says “your 66

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2017

name and guest,” then and only then may you take someone with you. If the invitation does not have your children’s names or does not say “and family,” then your children are not invited. » Always be in your seat 15 minutes prior to the time the wedding is scheduled. If you arrive late, think carefully if it wise to enter the ceremony room. If you cannot enter without interruption, remain outside. » It is extremely rude to ever take a beverage or a food item into a wedding ceremony. I recently watched three teens carry their McDonald’s cups into a wedding. Never do that! » Dress in a way that does not take attention away from the bride. Women, this means that you should not wear an outfit that would cause everyone’s eyes to be on you instead of the bride. I hope you hear what I’m saying here!

» It’s best to not even take your phone into the wedding. Just leave it in your car, and then you may go retrieve it after the ceremony. Regardless of how careful everyone tries to be, these days there’s always someone’s phone ringing in the middle of a ceremony. So sad! » The best way to think of your behavior at a wedding is to be cheerful, yet discreet. Meaning, you want to be mindful that your behavior does not detract from the bride and groom in any way. All attention at all times should be on the happy couple. Enjoy those weddings!
