Room Conversion – A Retreat for Your Wardrobe

HAT SPECIAL ROOM. For some it’s a wine cellar where friends can gather in the home and sip a favorite vintage. Some enjoy their theatre room where current features are viewed in a private setting. But if caring about appearance and wanting a retreat for dressing is your idea of luxury, it’s more easily attained than you may think. Look around your home for that room or space that is not being used to its potential. Being adjacent to the master bedroom is not a necessity. In New York, an organizing client designed her dream home with the master on main floor, but her dressing room was in the basement. With a small closet in the master suite just for necessities, a large dressing room was down the steps next to the larder for dressing for day or evening events. When asked about the convenience of the main closet so far away from the bedroom, it was shared how nice it was to be away for the distraction of other household activities. This was her private sanctuary with a large island for drawers, and glass door cabinets held hanging garments. Shoes were displayed on pull-out shelves, and the room included a

comfortable chair. Closer to home in Knoxville, we have taken rooms no longer needed for grown children and made them a place to house clients’ collections of couture. In one, a large sitting room – that was never used – was claimed for a dream closet, which then allowed the old master to become the husband’s. In another project, a sunroom off the master was converted from a seldom used office to a wardrobe boutique. Even though a wall of windows is not ideal in a closet,

three walls were without obstruction, and that allowed lots of storage. When planning a major remodel or designing a new build, think twice about including windows in the closet. The most storage possible is utilizing an entire wall for a closet system. Not only can windows take away valuable storage, but sunlight will fade clothing. If you like natural light for dressing, consider how many times you dress before the sun is up or after the sun goes down. What is important is good lighting in your new closet. LED lighting gives the best light; never use florescent. And for just a bit more of an investment, consider adding lighting to your new closet system. Your appearance sets the tone for the entire day. Male or female, on a large estate or in a subdivision, a dressing room or closet that gives needed storage and provides a setting to inspire is certain to help you dress to impress!

former Knoxville police officer, husband, and father of two, Jim Murray, sustained an injury from a fall in April 2016, he no longer had the full use of his arms for several months. “I couldn’t drive, lift heavy objects, or exercise like I wanted to,” said Jim. “During that time, I gained a significant amount of weight. I tried going to the gym but always found an excuse not to go. Adding refrigerated pasta like Buitoni Three Cheese Tortellini helps make it a complete meal, cutting time spent on preparation but not on taste. The blend of ricotta, Parmesan, and romano cheeses in the tortellini perfectly complements veggies like sweet potatoes, kale, and carrots in a steaming, herby broth. » Strategically mix in vegetables. There are several ways to sneak veggies into your favorite comfort foods. Sprinkle greens into scrambled eggs and quiches, incorporate shredded zucchini and carrots into baked goods, add spinach or broccoli to spaghetti sauce, or make pumpkin waffles. The possibilities are endless. » Use fruit to indulge your sweet tooth. For many people, comfort foods are all about desserts. Those striving to eat healthier can still enjoy their sweets in moderation but may wish to incorporate ingredients like fresh fruits so they also offer greater nutritional value. Consider warm berry cobblers, baked apples, carrot cake, and/or smoothies that make use of fruits and even veggies.

Instructions: Pre-heat instant pot to the sauté “normal” setting along with 1 teaspoon of oil. Add the bacon and cook for 5 minutes, then add the rosemary, thyme, and sage. Cook for 3 more minutes or until the bacon is golden in color, then add the onions, carrots, bell peppers, red pepper flakes, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and a few cracks of pepper. Mix well and turn the sauté setting to “more” on the instant pot and cook for 8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook another 6 minutes or until the veggies are soft and have wilted down by a good amount. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute, then add the kale, crushed tomatoes, beef stock, dried beans, Parmesan rind, bay leaf, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and a few cracks of pepper. Make sure you don’t add liquid past the max line on the instant pot. Mix well and check for seasoning; you will likely need a bit more salt. Press cancel on the instant pot, put the lid on, and set to pressure cook on high for 40 minutes. Once the cook time is done, let the instant pot sit for 10 minutes, then carefully release the pressure manually. Make sure to remove the bay leaf and Parmesan rind. When the soup is ready, bring a 4-quart pot of water to boil and cook the Buitoni Three Cheese Tortellini according to package instructions. Drain well and add the tortellini to the pot of soup and stir. Make the crostini by seasoning the tomatoes with 1 teaspoon of oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and a couple cracks of pepper, and roast in a 400F oven for 15-20 minutes. Once the tomatoes start to burst, they are ready. Toast the bread, schmear on some ricotta cheese, spread on the Buitoni Pesto with Basil, and top with roasted tomatoes. Serve the soup with the crostini and enjoy! Soup will keep for 3 days in the fridge or can be frozen for 3 months.

to lead you in the wrong direction. Always read the list of ingredients! Ingredients are listed in the order of the weight. Look for top-quality “animal protein,” listed by species, with chicken, duck, lamb, beef, or salmon as the initial ingredient. Listing “meat” without specifics is an example of a low-quality protein of a dubious origin. There should also be a named animal protein “meal” (for example, chicken meal). Avoid “meat” meal or “poultry” meal. Whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, and other carbohydrate sources such as potatoes, peas, chickpeas, or sweet potatoes should be the next ingredients. One does not want to see “corn” listed in the ingredients, as we fatten hogs on corn. Our dogs are not hogs! Avoid foods that list “byproducts” or “byproduct” meal. Some of the animal tissues that go into making “byproducts” are nutritious, such as liver, blood, bone, fat, intestines, lungs, and kidneys; however, because they are not meant for human consumption, they are not required to be kept clean and chilled through processing and

transport. This can be dangerous to the dog. Avoid “generic” fat sources such as “animal fat,” as these can be obtained from renderers that process dead animals. There should be no added sweeteners. Sweeteners are used to entice dogs to eat foods comprised mainly of grain fragments. If the food looks like candy, the nutritional value is probably very low. Artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives should not be present. The food should be flavored enough with healthy meats, fats, and other ingredients to be enticing. Natural preservatives such as vitamins E & C and rosemary extracts should be used instead. Always check the “best by” date on the label to ensure freshness. It should be at least six months away. Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships Moves to Tennessee in 2020 and 2021

N A I A Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships will find a new home in Tennessee as Visit Knoxville Sports Commission will be the new host for the 2020 and 2021 events at the Allan Jones Aquatics Center. In the 63 years of men’s and 39 years of women’s swimming and diving championship, the championships have never been hosted in Tennessee. These championships will be the 8th and 9th championships that have been held in the Volunteer State. Previous championships include baseball (1979-1980), DI women’s basketball (1991-2011), football (1986, 1989, 1996-2007), women’s golf (2011-2012), men’s and women’s indoor track & field (2001-2010, 2016-2017), and women’s volleyball (1994). “The NAIA is excited to partner with Visit Knoxville Sports Commission,” said Jim Carr, NAIA President and CEO. “The Allan Jones

Aquatics Center will raise the competition experience throughout the championships.” The Allan Jones Aquatics Center was completed in 2008. The facility holds a capacity of 1,284 fans, and the deck area will accommodate up to 2,000 additional individuals, teams, and other personnel.

The building features a full-size 50-meter competition pool, a separate competition diving well, a strength training center, sports medicine facility, and a high-tech timing room. “This is going to be an incredible event for Knoxville,” said Chad Culver, Senior Director of the Visit Knoxville Sports Commission. “We are very excited to host this NAIA National Championship at Allan Jones Aquatic Center. We look forward to showing the athletes, coaches, and fans a great experience in Knoxville.” Currently 29 NAIA institutions sponsor men’s swimming and diving and 36 NAIA institutions sponsor women’s swimming and diving. HAVE OFTEN heard it said that the

baby boomer generation had the greatest music. I happen to agree wholeheartedly. One of the reasons I feel that way is because of the iconic work by the legendary Graham Nash – whether it was his work during his time with The Hollies or the prolific period with Crosby, Still, Nash (and sometimes Young), or in his various solo pursuits. Because Nash was, once again, going to be performing in East Tennessee (this time at Chattanooga’s Walker Theater), I was granted the opportunity to chat with the musical icon about his latest album, Over the Years, and the supporting tour. When I mentioned that he was going to be playing in Chattanooga (easy driving distance from me) and that I met with him during his show in Knoxville (even closer to me), he interjected with this neat bit of news: “You know, in Knoxville, I was approached by the City Council just very quickly. The idea was that the Everly Brothers spent the first eight years of their life in Knoxville. They were on their parents’ radio show in Knoxville. So the Knoxville City Council approached me and said that they’re going to make a small park in honor of the Everly Brothers. Part of their design is that on the walk through the park, there are marble stones on the floor that are carved with quotes from quite famous people about the Everly Brothers. They wanted to know if I could help find people that would give a small quote and get permission to put their signature carved into the marble. So far I have me, of course. I have Keith Richards. I have McCartney. I have Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Brian Wilson. Incredible stuff, you know? I just thought I’d tell you that because you’re familiar with Knoxville. How 26

could I not be involved when it’s the Everly Brothers? They’re part of the reason we are talking right now!” The new album, Over the Years, is a fantastic, must-have collection of some of Nash’s work. I asked him to tell me about the album. “I realized a year ago that there’d never been a Greatest Hits of my music,” he said. “Yes, Greatest Hits of CSN. Greatest Hits of CSNY. Greatest Hits of The Hollies, etc. But not of me, personally. So I went on the internet and found out what my friends’ 15 most favorite songs of mine are, and I put them on. And then I thought, ‘You know, people have probably bought all this music – maybe even several times. How could I make it more interesting and more desirable?’ So I decided that I would go into my archives and find the demos of those songs and put them on. That’s what it became. The artwork was done by my wife, Amy Grantham.” Over the Years is a two-disc collection that includes original demos of some of Nash’s biggest hits. I asked him which song he would point to as a calling card for the collection. “It would be ‘Marrakesh Express’ because that was the demo that I sent The Hollies, and they made a very half-hearted attempt to record it,” he said. “To me, in my mind and

being the writer of that song, I needed the energy of a moving train through it, which Stephen Stills brilliantly did on the CSN version of Marrakesh. I think if people hear the original demo, they’ll realize a couple of things. One is that the arrangement of the song didn’t change that much from my demos. I notice that the arrangement of each was already complete in my mind when I made the demo. ‘Teach Your Children,’ of course, is another one. I started that song in the north of England, and I finished it in Los Angeles in early ’69. But you can hear that the arrangement – apart from the fact that there’s a solo in there that was done, of course, by Jerry Garcia – is pretty much the same as my demo.” Graham Nash is touring this year, and East Tennessee is privileged to have one of the tour stops being in Chattanooga. I asked him what fans could expect from the show. “They can expect me to want to be there,” he said. “I want them to know that I want to be there making music for them, and I also want to see them smile on their way out so I know that I’ve done my job.” As of this writing, a few tickets to put that kind of smile on your face – courtesy of Graham Nash – are available and can be purchased by visiting www. ECM has long served as a stable platform for its artists to venture into the unknown, too, to make music that defied the boundaries of safety and expectation within their chosen form. And their long-term relationships with artists have allowed musicians to evolve and experiment, testing new ideas in a space that welcomed them. In a decade of presenting both innovators and icons and welcoming new projects from familiar faces, Big Ears has pursued a similar ideal. This is evident simply by looking at Big Ears’ past rosters, dotted by artists associated with ECM, including Evan Parker, Steve Reich, Roscoe Mitchell, and Theo Bleckmann. This year’s ECM celebration at Big Ears is a natural continuation of that investment in and enthusiasm for what the label represents. These concerts at Big Ears 2019 are a collective testament to the label’s enduring vitality, to the breadth and depth they have added to

modern music. Many of the artists who helped shape ECM’s pioneering role in previous decades will be on hand – exquisite and exploratory guitarists Ralph Towner, Bill Frisell, and David Torn, who have all released records on ECM for decades; legendary jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette, who recorded Ruta And Daitya with Keith Jarrett in 1971; classical viola virtuoso Kim Kashkashian, who has played on three-dozen ECM titles. Wadada Leo Smith returns to perform his ECM classic Divine Love. They will be joined by projects asking new questions about the outer limits of form and genre, like pianist Nik Bärtsch’s pulsating RONIN and saxophonist Tim Berne’s radically exploratory Snakeoil. Big Ears 2019 will pull ECM’s influence across genre and generation into one long weekend, putting it into conversation with the rest of modern music throughout the entire festival. 2008, the growth of Random Acts of Flowers has been quite remarkable. During the past 10 years, Random Acts of Flowers has delivered more than 98,000 bouquets of re-purposed flowers to individuals in healthcare facilities here in the Greater Knoxville area. With a staff of just one full-time employee, two parttime employees, and an intern, the only way Random Acts of Flowers can create and deliver this many personal moments of kindness is thanks to its dedicated, funloving, and hard-working volunteer base. In 2018 alone, Random Acts of Flowers volunteers put more than 11,750 hours into delivering hope – collecting flower donations from grocery stores, florists, and events around the area, sorting and preparing the flowers, and repurposing them into beautiful individual bouquets. Volunteers come to Random Acts of Flowers for a variety of reasons. Some volunteer to enjoy the comradery of being with others that enjoy giving back to the community. Some volunteer as part of a corporate day of service. Some find floral arranging therapeutic. Some volunteer in honor of a friend or family member that received one 36

ing into spring! However, I’ll warn you that this is the month when everyone tends to lose their mind. Days get warm, and you’ll start thinking about annuals and tomatoes and other spring plants. Yes, we’re going to have some gorgeous days, but Mother Nature is a fickle creature. She’ll trick you into thinking that we’re having an early spring then break your heart by sending those temps plummeting like a stone from the sky. The average last frost is April 15th, and we had a hard freeze on that date last year. Don’t rush the season. » Early March is, however, a good time to finalize your plans for the season. What needs to be done in your yard? What needs to be added, removed, divided, pruned, fertilized, or replaced? Would you like to add a bird or pollinator friendly area? Do you need to scale back on plants that require too much maintenance? Now’s the time to make these decisions and call for landscape installation. » Let’s talk about landscapers. We work with some truly talented, good landscaping companies. We’ve also had some come in that literally did not know a nandina from a holly. Ask and call around, and remember that cheaper is not always best. A good landscaper will install plants that can

improve the value of your home and last for many years. It’s better to pay a little more for someone who will put the right plant in the right place the right way. » Are you ready to play in the dirt? The first thing to do is remove all those weeds! I have a plethora of green onions, henbit, popweed, and chickweed threatening to take over my yard, and I’m sure you do, too. Remove those and get your spring application of a pre-emergent down. If you prefer not to use chemicals, arm yourself with a trowel or ball weeder, gloves, and a Hula hoe. Weeding is very therapeutic, and many of those “weeds” are edible and nutritious! » If you didn’t add compost to your soil in the fall, you can do that now. It will begin breaking down and adding nutrients to your soil. Make sure that manure and wood products are well aged, however, or they will damage your plants. » If you’re not planting, add fresh mulch to your beds or fluff up the mulch that’s already there. I also recommend mulching around trees to protect them from weed whacker damage. (Dogwoods are particularly vulnerable.) Remember that 3” is adequate, and you should have donuts and not volcanoes around your trees. » Plant trees, shrubs, and cool season

perennials as soon as the ground is workable. I know many of you have a bog in your yard right now, so it’s best to wait until it’s a little dryer. Cold, wet soil is not good for plants. Sooth that itch by planting containers or just getting the area ready. » You can start warm season annual and vegetable seeds inside. By mid-month, you can plant your precious tomatoes and peppers! They need to stay inside, however. Create a “greenhouse” in a sunny window or use artificial light. Call if you have questions. » Cool-season greens, onion sets, beets, carrots, potatoes, and radishes can be seeded directly into the ground (if nature cooperates). Seedlings of cole crops can go in the ground mid-month. This includes head lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. » You can fertilize trees and shrubs after the middle of the month. If using a chemical fertilizer, please read the directions. Some of you think if a little is good, a lot is better. Chemical burns are hard for plants to withstand. I generally use organic products so burning isn’t an issue. Organic products also have a slower release rate, so there isn’t the danger of generating new growth before we’re out of frost danger. You can also fertilize perennials when they begin to show new growth, crocus after blooms have faded, and daffodils when they start to yellow. » Divide and transplant summer blooming perennials such as daylilies, hosta, and Siberian iris when it warms up and the soil is workable. » I really hate to say these words, but you can prune summer flowering shrubs like roses and (oh, how I hate to say this) Crepe Myrtles before they start putting on new growth. It’s also a good idea to prune out any dead or damaged wood from trees and shrubs. Please educate yourself. There is a very hard line between pruning and butchering. » Grasses and groundcovers can also be cut back now. Shorter grasses can be run over with a lawnmower on its highest setting. Large grasses are easiest if you tie them with twine and cut below. Leave a foot or so to protect the baby shoots. » Your perennials may need a makeover after this wet, rollercoaster spring. Once the new growth has emerged at the base of your perennials and they are happily growing, cut all that ugly old stuff off. If you have questions, please call. » Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders clean and full of a good quality birdseed, and keep birdbaths clean and full when they aren’t frozen. winter landscape is hellebore, as it is commonly known. Botanically it is known as Helleborus. You may also know it as Christmas rose or Lenten rose because of its rose-like flowers that are in bloom during winter and early spring around the Christian observance of Lent. The genus name Helleborus originates from the Greek words helein, which means to injure, and bora, which means food. Put together, these Greek words indicate that the plant is bitter and toxic to eat. There are about 15 species of hellebore, and all have some ornamental value. The most popular are the Oriental hybrid hellebores (Helleborus x hybridus cvs.). Recent breeding and hybridizing have expanded the palette of hellebore, and unique flower and foliage forms and textures have resulted in reviving interest in this woodland perennial. We now have incredible selections with improved characteristics such as new flower colors, double flowers, variegated foliage, and flowers that stand erect rather than nodding. Some of the most exciting trends include truer and more unusual colors from amber to almost black, increased plant heights, and outward-facing blooms. Gardeners are not limited, however, to a rainbow of solid-color flowers. Hellebores can also have beautiful picotee edges (edges that are a different color than the rest of the flower) or veining to adorn the outside of the bloom. Inside the bloom, they can have spotting or a dark center that draws your eye into the flower. The varied hybrid offerings extend to the shape of the flowers as well. In addition to single, double, and star-shaped flowers, hellebores can have an anemone-flowered form, which looks like something between a single and a double. With the dizzying array of choices available, it’s easy to find a hellebore you will like. When purchasing a hellebore, the best way to ensure you are getting what you want is to buy it in bloom. February into April is the ideal time to shop your local garden centers and nurseries when they are stocked with a variety of selections in bloom. Hellebores are easy to grow if you provide organically rich soil and a part-shade location. Although plants need to be kept slightly moist when they are becoming established, they become relatively drought-tolerant with age. Plants tend to clump about two feet wide and two feet tall. Some hellebore will rapidly self-sow around the garden, and since many are now hybrids, you never know what color of bloom will result. The leathery foliage of hellebore looks best when sheared in late fall just before flowers and new growth emerge.

Because they flower when the weather is cool, they have an exceptionally long bloom time, often flowering from January to May. Most selections are cold hardy to USDA Hardiness Zones 5 (-20 degrees F) and are resistant to both deer and voles. Hellebores are the perfect winterflowering perennial for the woodland shade garden. They combine wonderfully well with flowering bulbs such as daffodils and snowdrops, as well as other shade-loving perennials like ferns, heuchera, foam flower, hosta, woodland phlox, and lungwort. They lend themselves well to being planted in the foreground of a garden and look great in a woodland setting when tucked in next to natural elements such as stone, stumps, and logs. If you have a slope, planting hellebores on a hillside allows you to see into the blooms on selections that have nodding flowers.

You can find numerous selections of Helleborous hybrids growing in all three UT Gardens locations across the state (Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson). Selections known to perform well, as reported by numerous horticulturists throughout Tennessee, include ‘Joseph Lemper,’ ‘Penny’s Pink,’ ‘Sparkling Diamonds,’ and ‘Golden Sunrise.’ The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. Establishing himself from a young age as an award-winning picker on guitar and mandolin, Mayfield went on to tour and record with groups such as The Avett Brothers, The Black Keys, and Mumford & Sons. His television and radio credits include The Late

Show with David Letterman and The Grand Ole Opry. Abby grew up alone. She turned to songwriting and music as an outlet to feel both heard and understood, attending Kent State University, where she participated in local festivals as a solo artist, and later toured extensively with Northeast Ohio supergroup The Speedbumps. When Rose discovered she had a twin brother named David Mayfield, the trajectory of her life and career changed, and from their long-lost history the Cave Twins duo was born. From the title track to the notably innocent “With You,” Rose and Mayfield expertly blend Americana instrumentation with ethereal vocals and positive, lighthearted lyrical themes. Park City Revival: New Life for an Old House

renovation project has transformed a blighted property in the Park City National Register District into a beautiful home once again. Other homes in the area are also getting a new lease on life as a result of revived interest in this historically important neighborhood. Park City was one of a ring of suburbs developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that surrounded Knoxville. When the district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, it had the most intact portion of the municipality that was once known as Park City. Major streets in the area include Winona Street, Washington, Jefferson, and Woodbine Avenues stretching eastward to Cherry Street and East Fifth Avenue from Winona Street to Beaman Street. The historic homes in the neighborhood date from about 1880 to 1940 and feature a variety of architectural styles, including Queen Anne, Eastlake, and Folk Victorian, as well as many “revival” styles such as Dutch Colonial, Tudor Revival, Neoclassical, and American Four Square. In 1990, there were 944 buildings counted in the district, and 891 of them were considered “contributing structures.” A contributing structure is one that has been classified as adding to the historical integrity or architectural qualities that make the district historic and significant. One of those contributing structures is 3031 East Fifth Avenue. The residence was built in 1912 for Frank C. Wilson, a superintendent at

This Folk Victorian-style home features a cross-gable roof, diamond pane attic window, one-story wrap-around front porch with wood columns, a projecting bay window, double-hung one-over-one wood windows, and recessed diamond pane sidelights with the original front door and doorbell. Knox Heritage purchased the home through the City of Knoxville’s Homemaker Program. Knox Heritage has been renovating homes in historic neighborhoods since 1999. These

homes can be found all across town in the neighborhoods of Fourth & Gill, Old North, Edgewood Park, Fort Sanders, Parkridge, and Sequoyah Hills. Knox Heritage was able to complete the renovation thanks to a grant from the 1772 Foundation paired with a construction loan. Louisville Tile donated all of the kitchen and bath tile, SESCO Lighting donated new light fixtures, and Ferguson donated some of the plumbing items. Paint was provided by the National Trust through Benjamin Moore. High Oaks Construction was the general contractor. Even the Knox Heritage Salvage Shop volunteers chipped in to help with floor refinishing, painting, and general cleanup. This home will be sold to new property owners and protected by a preservation conservation easement to ensure the property is cared for and not demolished at some point in the future. Dogs Are Making a Difference in Hospitals A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

being in the hospital can be a frightening, vulnerable, and lonely experience, especially for those undergoing serious medical treatments. However, research has shown that dogs, with their playful, comforting, and loving nature, can have beneficial, long-lasting effects on pediatric patients. According to Purdue University, interacting with animals in different environments, including hospitals, could improve our physical and mental health, as well as enhance aspects of our daily lives. Here are a few things to know about inresidence dogs and their positive impact on pediatric patients: 1. In-residence dogs are highly trained service dogs that work in healthcare settings and perform specialized tasks. They are also trained to create an emotional connection with pediatric patients, helping to provide them with joy, comfort, and other medical benefits. 2. Different from volunteer dogs that visit a hospital for a short time, in-residence dogs have a similar work schedule as their human counterparts, working closely with their handlers. They often have access to non-sterile clinics and inpatient units. 3. In-residence dogs can be an integral part of a child’s treatment team. They perform

a range of tasks that help medical teams achieve their clinical goals. In-residence dogs can be trained to do incredible things like keep kids calm during medical interventions, teach them how to take a pill, or model how to put on a hospital gown. 4. In-residence dogs can help lower a pediatric patient’s stress and anxiety by serving as a pleasant distraction. Hospital staff report that children who interact with in-residence dogs often require less medication. While in-residence dog programs have potential, they are relatively new. Out of more than 220 children’s hospitals in the U.S., only a few have in-residence dog programs. By implementing such programs, hospitals could give more pediatric patients the opportunity to experience the joy and health benefits that come with in-residence dogs. Dr. Jana Stockwell, a pediatric critical care physician at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, serves as a handler for an in-residence dog named Tidings. “Our Children’s dogs are full-time employees with a meaningful job to do, and on a daily basis, Tidings helps children be more engaged, encourages them to get out of bed, and even inspires them to tell us about a pet at home that they’re missing,” she said. “Our in-residence dogs never fail to lift the spirits of kids and adults alike.”

Foundation brings dogs to hospitals To fill this unmet need and further its mission to bring joy to kids battling illness or hunger, the Joy in Childhood Foundation, the independent charitable foundation of Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins, has launched “Dogs for Joy,” a program to bring in-residence dogs to children’s hospitals nationwide. Dogs in this program are bred and trained as service dogs but “work” full-time in children’s hospitals. Through more than $2 million in initial grants, the program will increase the number of in-residence dog programs in pediatric healthcare settings around the country and the prevalence of animal-assisted therapy as part of treatment. The Joy in Childhood Foundation invites children’s hospitals nationwide to apply for a Dogs for Joy grant if they’re interested in launching a new in-residence dog program or expanding an existing program. Funds awarded cover costs for launching and maintaining an in-residence dog program at a hospital, including adoption of the dog, training of select staff, dog food, dog grooming needs, dog toys, and more. losing some of the foundational artists of the genre. Greats like B.B. King and Johnny Winter left us far too soon. However, we still have many blues greats touring and putting out great blues. One such artist is someone we’ve had the privilege of chatting with a couple of times before: Walter Trout. Trout has a new CD out entitled Survivor Blues and will be hitting the road in support of that album. It was about the disc that I called him up at his home. It had been four years since we last spoke, so I asked what has been happening since our last chat. “I’m doing great, man! I’m feelin’ great! I’m very, very – almost shocked to be still alive. I had the transplant four years ago, and this is the fourth record I’ll be putting out since the transplant. I just feel lucky and blessed and grateful, and it’s an all-new thing to be alive after what I went through.” Trout was in the area last year for an intimate show in Maryville that was put on by a local blues organization of sorts. I asked him why he doesn’t hit the region more often. “I don’t know,” he said. “I’m really busy playing all across the world, but I am getting back to Tennessee. I don’t know if it’s near you, but I’m playing in Pelham at The Caverns – in the cave there – I think maybe in April. I’m going to double-bill with Eric Gales. “Let me tell you a story. My high school girlfriend, who I was deeply in love with after she graduated from high school in South Jersey, went to Maryville College to study piano. In 1970, I used to hitchhike down there from South Jersey, and I used to stay with her in the girl’s dorm. They used to sneak me in, and I literally – literally – would climb the ivy and sneak in the window. So I have a lot 58

of history in Maryville. I know it well. I spent a lot of time there with my girlfriend.” Turning to his new CD, I asked him for his “elevator speech” about it. “The short version is that all my life, I have thought there are all these amazing blues songs that have fallen by the wayside. When people decide they’re going to do albums of blues covers or they’re going to play covers when they’re playing love, they come out and do ‘I Got My Mojo Working’ or they do ‘Stormy Monday’ or they do ‘Caledonia’ or ‘Hey Hey The Blues Is Alright’ and ‘Missing With the Kid’ – all these songs that have been covered 853,000 times, you know? And I’m like ‘Wait a minute, here. There’s this vast catalog of these incredible songs that are just kind of forgotten.’” Trout recorded at the studio owned and operated by the Doors’ Robbie Krieger. He shared how and why that came about. “This is the first time I’ve worked with him,” he said. “The way that this happened is that my producer, Eric Corne – this is our 12th or 13th album together, we’re kind

of a team – he came and he said, ‘You know, Robbie Krieger’s got this studio. It’s kind of a private studio across town, but it’s awesome. Let’s go over and see it.’ We went over and the place is beautiful. “So we started recording there and Robbie, who loves blues – that’s his main love in life is the blues – was coming in and hanging out. He’d be listening to playbacks. He’d be having meals with us. We’d be playing back – listening to a playback. He’d be sitting on a couch, with an acoustic guitar, playing along. One day I said, ‘Hey man! Let’s do something together!’ He’s like, ‘Yeah! That’d be great!’” When I asked Trout if there is a track that he would point to as a calling card for the whole album, he shared: “The cut that I think is the ultimate statement on that album is the opener, ‘Me, My Guitar, and the Blues’ by Jimmy Dawkins. When I heard that, I was completely devastated. I thought to myself, ‘This song that this guy wrote – which has basically been forgotten and unheard – is as good a blues song as anyone has ever written. This is classic.' He basically took the entire genre of the blues and summed up the whole thing in two lines: ‘And now that you don’t love me, all I have left is me, my guitar, and the blues.’” Keep up with the latest about Walter Trout at www.WalterTrout.com. Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from March 1-29. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition.

A1LabArts: Connections in the Main Gallery A1LabArts’ inaugural juried exhibition, “Connections,” is a wideranging show presenting innovative work by 31 artists from Knoxville and beyond. Works explore the theme of “connections” in a broad variety of styles and media, including but not limited to painting, photographic Yvonne Dalschen processes, video, sculpture and assemblage, and more. A1LabArts, a long-established Knoxville nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting artistic innovation, organized the show by an open call to all artists. From numerous entries received, select works were juried for the show based on criteria, including originality, creativity, and social relevance. The juror is Katie Hargrave, professor at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Melanie Fetterolf: From Student to Educator in the Balcony Gallery

“Color and nature, combined with my imagination, are my inspirations,” said Melanie Fetterolf. “I love to find the hidden colors within my subject matter and bring those to life. The juxtaposition of colors fascinates me! I tend to paint patterns of color using blending, layering, and texture. I have always enjoyed exploring the border between realism and abstraction in many different mediums. Sometimes I create images specifically to print on notecards, and I tend to think about how a finished work will look in card form. I love the creative process and experimenting with new mediums and techniques, which has resulted in my rain painting series, as well as creative art classes. I hope to inspire my students to also live their dreams creatively.”

Fetterolf is an active painter who enjoys working in a variety of mediums. She works in watercolor, acrylic, alcohol inks, pen and ink, recycled art, and some clay. Her most recent work is in acrylic and watercolor. She began to focus on painting while at college, and in 1993 graduated with a BFA with a Painting Concentration from Virginia Tech. Prints of her work may be found at Ijams Nature Center, Davis Studio, and the Appalachian Arts and Crafts Center. She participates in local farmers markets, various festivals, and Wilderness Wildlife Week in Pigeon Forge, and she exhibits regularly throughout the Knoxville area. Rick Roth: Illuminations in the Display Case “My work mainly consists of grinding texture onto metal and usually painting transparent color over it,” said Rick Roth. “This technique gives the finished piece both a holographic and iridescent effect. The piece seems to move as you move; colors brighten and soften on their own. I am often asked if I use glass or if the pieces are illuminated because they appear Rick Roth so bright.” Roth enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the early 1980s, ultimately reaching the rank of Corporal. After an honorable discharge, he and his wife moved to Washington State to raise their family. Roth stayed home with his children for 20 years, and when they left for college, he discovered the concept of abstract metal art. “I liked the way it moved and flowed and how vibrant the colors were,” he said. He worked toward creating the same idea but with his own twist. Roth tries to make his art move and change as if it were alive, responding to the viewer individually. “I always get more out of these pieces than the work I’ve put in,” he said. “That’s what I love about it. Making my art is both exciting and relaxing for me, and I hope it is for the viewers as well.” He and his wife moved to Tennessee eight years ago. The natural beauty of the area continues to inspire him. Richard Jansen: Trees and Other Beautiful Things on the North Wall There are approxim a t e l y 1 0 0,0 0 0 species of trees in the world. It is estimated by NASA from satellite pictures of the Richard Jansen earth that there are approximately three trillion trees on the earth, which equates to approximately 400 trees for every human. Trees are often taken for granted and overlooked for their beauty and grandeur. In all their varieties and leafy splendor, trees provide us with a variety of color and designs. It is Richard

Jansen’s intent to share some of the magnificent trees he has had the opportunity to photograph during his lifetime. Born and raised in Kansas, Jansen has resided in Knoxville for the past 21 years. He is a graduate of the University of Washington, Seattle, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree and the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he earned his Master of Arts. He is married with five grown children and nine grandchildren. Jansen joined the Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1998. He initially left the Army after Vietnam, where he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, and Air Medals as a squad leader in the 9th and 25th Infantry Division. He left the military after returning home in 1970, returned to college, and later rejoined the Army as a First Lieutenant in the Army Medical Specialist Corps. His intent was to help wounded veterans from Vietnam and other military conflicts. He won multiple photography awards while in the Army to include All Army and All Interservice awards. Jansen has photographed since 1970 after returning from Vietnam. His love for photography helps him bury the scars from that conflict. He is also a published photographer with publications in multiple magazines, calendars, and Hallmark cards. Yvonne Hosey: Glasslike Surfaces 2.0 in the Atrium Yvonne Hosey is an artist who works in several mediums: Glasspaint, acrylic, watercolor, and scratchboard. She is inspired by her travels and blogs about them. This is her third exhibition at the Emporium, with the inaugural Glasslike Surfaces debuting in August 2016. Yvonne Hosey She continues to explore glasspaint as a medium, as well as portraiture using friends and people seen on the subway during a fall trip to New York City. Like most artists, Hosey’s journey has been a winding one. Discouraged as a young woman from pursuing a career in art, Hosey opted instead for a career in nursing. Marriage and family followed. The creativity refused to stay buried as she became an avid cook, decorator, and collector. Her travels always included trips to art museums and exhibitions. When her son started high school, they moved to a house with a sunny back porch. “One day I discovered a pack of old oil pastels, bought a few sheets of paper, and commandeered the porch,” said Hosey. “I haven’t looked back since.” The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. The iconic Marlboro man portrayed in these commercials was a rugged individualist whose independence was viewed as courageous by many. However, in the years since, this same independence is now perceived by some as a major character flaw; an individual who placed his reliance on his own independence rather than on the advice and recommendations of trusted friends and mentors. As an entrepreneur, it is customary that the final decision on issues comes down to your choice. But it can be a huge mistake to make your decisions in the absence of the recommendations and advice of a few trusted advisers. I’m always surprised by the number of small

Confiding in others is not always an easy thing for freeminded entrepreneurs to do, because it requires the courage necessary to place your trust in the wisdom of others. Little courage is required to act alone. But caution must also be exercised not to overthink your decision, waiting for the stars to align. I’ve often observed small business owners who seek out endless advice in order to avoid the fear that can result from making an important decision. Courage is the trademark of the successful entrepreneur, but the entrepreneurs that exhibit the greatest courage are those who are fearless in seeking the advice of trusted counselors and mentors.

In the U.S. alone, women entrepreneurs generate $1.1 million in revenue on average across retail, professional, and personal service businesses that have operated for 11 years. This stat comes from Visa’s new “State of Female Entrepreneurship” report, which informed their recently announced program, She’s Next, Empowered by Visa, a global initiative to support and champion women in their efforts to grow their small businesses. That’s powerful stuff, highlighting the important role women entrepreneurs play in the prosperity and economic development of local communities. The typical entrepreneur is 42 years old and earns nearly $110,000 in household income a year, making a profound difference in building and supporting families in the community. Clearly female founders are coming into their own. In fact, the Visa study found that 79% of American women entrepreneurs feel

more empowered now than they did five years ago. Still, key challenges exist: 73% say funding does not come easily, and nearly two-thirds use their own funds to get started. Assembling a good team, finding the right tools, and dealing with competitors are among the biggest challenges keeping women entrepreneurs up at night. For any entrepreneur, it can feel like there’s never enough time or resources to grow a business. To help other entrepreneurs and based on insights from the “State of Female Entrepreneurship” report, Visa polled four areas women entrepreneurs focus on to turbocharge success: » Find mentors: More than two-thirds said they wanted advice from fellow entrepreneurs. Relatable role models and mentors are invaluable when you’re making the leap to starting or building your own business. » Find your feet: Strategy development is critical for women starting up their own company. Assembling a good team was a challenge encountered by 37% of women founders.

Other challenges include finding the tools to grow and manage their business (36%), competition (36%), and growing as quickly as they need to (33%). Have a plan and pursue your vision. » Gather capital to invest in your business: Cash flow is the lifeblood of any business. Respondents cited profits and revenue growth as the top two priorities for improvement. Thirty-two percent of women would direct additional funding toward newer technology. » Put in overtime: When building a business, time is precious. Given the investment and high stakes that come with the territory, it comes as little surprise that a majority of women entrepreneurs (56%) are putting in more work hours than before they started their business. MYTH: Botox freezes your face. Some people think that Botox will prevent you from making facial expressions and freezes your face into one position. If done correctly, this is not true. Botox works by blocking signals from your nerves to the muscles, preventing contractions and smoothing out lines. As a trained, board certified dermatologist, Dr. Doppelt can administer Botox that allows wrinkles to soften and relax but still allows you to express a full range of emotions - happiness, surprise, joy, and even anger. MYTH: Botox injections are poison and unsafe. Doctors have been using Botox for a variety of medical and aesthetic reasons for close to two decades. That means that over time, the relaxed muscles will begin to contract again, returning your facial muscles to their previous positions. Though regular injections will maintain the treatment effects, you can stop receiving Botox at any time without any damage or making wrinkles worse. MYTH: Botox is only for women. More and more men are coming into the office to have Botox treatments. Botox can help to soften a man’s look to give a natural, more youthful appearance. As the business marketplace becomes more competitive, men are looking for something to give them a competitive edge. MYTH: The best time for Botox is when the lines appear.

Not so. Lines and wrinkles are formed by repetitive muscle movements like raising the eyebrows, squinting, and scowling. If you wait until the lines and wrinkles are etched into your skin, it can be more difficult to smooth their appearance.
