THE

LIFE

expectancy of your home’s windows is difficult to predict, their longevity typically depends on a variety of factors, including their age, brand, and proper maintenance. But when it’s time to replace some or all of your home’s windows, you may find the task a bit overwhelming with competing claims from dozens of window installation companies. Which window is the most energy efficient, which window will deliver the greatest longevity, and which window offers the best warranty are just a few of the questions you should be asking yourself. But answers to other questions you need to ask yourself is how long your window contractor has been in business, what has been their customers’ experiences, and do they employ the best practices when installing your new windows. Sister and brother and owners of Knoxville-based Window Works, Wendy Hughes and Chris Moon, have earned a reputation for honesty, integrity, and quality craftsmanship that they learned from early childhood from their parents, Tom and Kay Moon. Tom and Kay launched and operated several home improvement companies for three decades. Their focus was to provide the highest quality home improvement products combined with a customer service level that exceeded the expectations of their clients. Much has changed in the window replacement marketplace as new technologies continue to offer area homeowners exciting new options and features when replacing their home’s windows. But one thing that has not changed is the reputation Window Works has earned for integrity and honesty that is the hallmark of success that was 6

instilled in Wendy and Chris as children by Tom and Kay. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are pleased to share with you this interview with Wendy and Chris, which was designed to assist area homeowners who may be contemplating replacing their home’s windows. EK: How do I know if it’s time to replace my home’s windows? Wendy: There are a variety of factors to consider, including the age of your windows, the feeling of cold air or drafts coming from your windows, and whether your windows are operating properly. Chris, who has an engineering background, puts his talents to work daily, assisting homeowners in evaluating their home’s windows. He is also invaluable in helping them in their decision as to whether replacing their windows is a wise choice and, if so, presenting them with a range of options to consider. EK: What choices do homeowners confront when deciding on which replacement windows to select? Chris: Choosing the best replacement window for your home can be a daunting task. Homeowners might only make this decision once or twice in their lifetime, and the rapid technological advancements in the replacement window marketplace can create even more confusion. Perhaps the best place to begin is by selecting a replacement window contractor you know you can trust. A great replacement window is no substitute for a poorly performing contractor. If you’re uncomfortable or feel that you’re being pressured, trust your instincts. You’re going to have to live with your decision for many years to come. EK: How does Window Works differentiate itself in the replacement window marketplace? Wendy: Our customers routinely express

just how comfortable they are in working with us. I think that because it is our nature to interact with them on such a personal level, they experience a level of confidence and trust that is increasingly more difficult to find today. Chris : It’s really something that was instilled in us at and early age by our mom and dad. We learned that your reputation was the very foundation of your business and that it’s something you have to earn every single day. We keep it simple. We listen carefully to our customers, and we offer honest assessments of their home’s windows. We are a second generation, family owned business that takes great pride in working with other families like our own. Placing our clients at the forefront of our daily activities, along with all that we have learned from our parents, have been the key to our success and why I think we see so many returning and referred customers. EK: Tell our readers why you are so excited about the new technologically advanced replacement windows that you offer from OKNA Windows. Wendy: First of all, we would like your readers to understand how much time and effort we invest in investigating any new product we offer. We take the addition of any new product very seriously. The manufacturer must have earned a reputation for product and management excellence, as well as exhibit the financial strength needed to develop new technologies and honor their product warranties. Chris: OKNA Windows, manufactured right here in the U.S.A., is a perfect example. Quite frankly, we believe that their replacement windows are among the finest available anywhere. OKNA has built an industry reputation by combining state-ofthe-art equipment, advanced technologies,

and dedicated craftsmanship. And the OKNA name has become synonymous with innovation, quality, and performance. EK: Tell our readers a little more about OKNA Windows. Chris : OKNA offers amazing window product lines. They have a well-earned reputation for innovation, quality, and performance, providing customers with one of the most improved energy-efficient windows on the market. OKNA Windows pioneered ClimaGuard. ClimaGuard is comprised of 11 optical tuned layers, which provide optimal climate control, neutral aesthetics, and plenty of natural light. ClimaGuards’ low-solar-gain coatings can provide better solar heat gain reduction than tinted glass, with a minimal loss of visible light. That means less harmful UV rays entering your home that can damage carpet, rugs, fabrics, hardwood floors, and artwork. OKNA Windows also feature high-performance, warm edge technology and insulating frames that help to create warmer interior glass surfaces and reduce frost and condensation. In addition to offering a full line of quality vinyl windows, OKNA also offers an amazing composite window manufactured from 100% pure virgin vinyl. These windows are available in a variety of interior colors, including wood grained, to seamlessly match your home’s interior décor. There is also a rich palette of exterior and custom colors available to complement your home’s exterior architecture. But what is most amazing is OKNA’s 50-year, non-prorated warranty on your new composite windows. These ENERGY STAR rated windows also help homeowners who are interested in reducing energy costs to enjoy the savings associated with replacement windows from OKNA. Also, windows from OKNA outperform competitors on energy efficiency and excel in areas such as air infiltration and structural integrity. In fact, one of OKNA’s newest replacement windows was

recognized by ENERGY STAR as “Most Efficient” in 2018. “Most Efficient” is a new distinction that recognizes products that deliver cutting-edge energy efficiency, along with the latest in technological innovation. It is an award that truly represents the very best of ENERGY STAR rated products. EK: Tell our readers about Widow Works’ “Best Practices” installation promise. Wendy: One thing about all replacement windows and doors is that they perform no better than the manner in which they were installed. That means that a highly rated replacement window installed improperly will likely perform no better than a poorly rated window. At Window Works, each of our installation teams is led by a team leader with at least two decades of experience. Our team members have been trained in the proper installation of all of the products we sell and adhere to the procedures outlined by each manufacturer whose products we represent, all backed up by our Peace-ofMind Product Warranty – your assurance of a lifetime of quality and performance. Window Works is also a TVA Escore approved contractor. This is an added benefit for all of our customers, as it offers them the opportunity to have an independent third party inspect our installation to ensure that it was installed and sealed properly. It’s a wonderful value added opportunity that any of our clients can take full advantage of. EK: In addition to replacement windows, what other products do you offer homeowners? Wendy: We also offer siding, patio doors, and gutters from the nation’s top manufacturers, which means that you will have a wide variety of colors and styles to select from. EK: How has your commitment to provide a customer service experience that exceeds the expectations of your clients impacted Window Works? Chris: There are no big or small projects. We provide the same high level of customer service to every client. We treat you the way

we would want to be treated and treat your home as if it were our own. We listen carefully to you. Are your improvements designed to create maintenance-free advantage, energy efficiency and savings that can result, or to update the overall appearance of your home? Those are just a few things we consider when we work alongside our clients before we recommend the best products to complete their projects. We sell don’t sell products or services to our clients that they don’t need or even want. That doesn’t help either one of us in the long run. It destroys trust. By educating and working with our clients, we eliminate the potential for this to occur. At the end of every project, our goal is to have exceeded your expectations and to earn your trust. This becomes the foundation of future client referrals and our success – a success where everybody is the winner. EK: Tell our readers a little more about your Peace-of-Mind Warranty. Wendy : We have invested significant time selecting the highest quality products for our customers for a number of reasons. One reason among many is the warranty. A customer that is only planning on staying in their current home for a year or two may not be as concerned as someone who is planning on staying 10, 20, or even 30+ years. That’s when a warranty matters the most. At the end of the day, we are not in the home improvement business; we are in the customer service business. Having a warranty in writing goes a long way for a homeowner’s peace of mind. A perfect example is OKNA’s 50-year, non-prorated warranty on their composite windows for the original homeowner. Also, OKNA’s vinyl windows have a lifetime warranty that is fully transferrable to a second homeowner. EK: What is the best way for our readers to learn more OKNA Windows and Window Works? Chris: There are a couple of ways. You can call us at 865-560-3044, or, if you prefer, you can come by our new showroom located at 10909 Murdock Drive in Knoxville. EK: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Wendy: On behalf of the entire Window Works family, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our clients for allowing us to come into their homes to experience the Window Works difference. We look forward to helping every homeowner who may be considering replacing their home’s windows, siding, gutters, and patio doors. We invite you to discover the Window Works difference for yourself.

Patty Griffin Performs at the Bijou Theatre March 30 at 8 pm

P ATTY GRIFFIN

is among the most consequential singer-songwriters of her generation, a quintessentially American artist whose wide-ranging canon incisively explores the intimate moments and universal emotions that bind us together. During the course of two decades, the GRAMMY Award winner and seven-time nominee has crafted nine classic studio albums and two live collections, a remarkable body of work in progress that prompted the New York Times to hail her for “writing cameo-carved songs that create complete emotional portraits of specific people... her songs have independent lives that continue in your head when the music ends.” The Austin, Texas-based singer and songwriter made an immediate impact with her 1996 debut, Living with Ghosts, and its 1998 follow-up, Flaming Red, both now considered seminal works of modern folk and Americana. Since then, Griffin’s diverse body of work spans such classic LPs as 2002’s GRAMMY Award-nominated 1000 Kisses, later ranked #15 on Paste’s “The 50 Best Albums of the Decade (2000-2009),” to 2007’s Children Running Through, honored by the Americana Music Association with two Americana Honors & Awards, including “Artist of the Year” and “Album of the Year.” To date, Griffin has received seven total 8

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2019

nominations from the Americana Music Association, affirming her as one of the farreaching genre’s leading proponents. 2011’s Downtown Church, which blends traditional gospel favorites with Griffin’s own spiritually questioning material, debuted at number one on both Billboard’s Folk Albums and Christian Albums charts before winning 2011’s “Best Traditional Gospel Album” GRAMMY Award, Griffin’s first solo GRAMMY triumph among seven total career nominations. Griffin’s most recent LP, 2015’s Servant of Love, marked the first release on her own PGM Recordings label via Thirty Tigers. Applauded by The Guardian as “bravely experimental,” the collection saw Griffin earn still another GRAMMY Award nomination, this time in the “Best Folk Album” category.

Widely regarded among the best pure songwriters of this or any other era, Griffin has had her work performed by a truly epic assortment of her fellow artists, among them Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Solomon Burke, The Dixie Chicks, Kelly Clarkson & Jeff Beck, Martina McBride, Miranda Lambert, Melissa Etheridge, and Susan Boyle, to name a few. Her songs have also been showcased in a variety of film, TV, and theatre projects, with her original music and lyrics featured in the 2007 musical 10 Million Miles. Griffin has also been joined in the studio by a veritable who’swho of contemporary Americana, including Harris, Buddy & Julie Miller, Shawn Colvin, Jim Lauderdale, Raul Malo, Ian McLagen, JD Foster, and many others. As if her own remarkable career weren’t enough, Griffin has found time to collaborate with a wide range of like-minded artists, among them Joshua Radin, Todd Snider, Dierks Bentley, Robert Plant, Jack Ingram, Gillian Welch, and David Rawlings. Having crafted a rich catalog that chronicles love and death, heartache and joy, connection and detachment, Griffin continues to push her art forward, as always imbuing every effort with compassion and craft, uncanny perception, and ever-increasing ingenuity. proven the mental and physical benefits of not only the sound, but presence of water in our lives. Waterfalls generate negative ions, which increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, which improves alertness and mental energy. The rhythm of “white noise” from the sounds of water affect our brain waves, encouraging a more peaceful pace of thought and deep meditation. The natural beauty of a pond, its colorful fish, and accompanied waterfall create a sense of awe that leads to greater life satisfaction. Moving water? √ Flowers? √ Fish and birds? √ Relaxation? √ Enjoying nature? √ The Pond Country Lifestyle is waiting for you. We build natural ecosystem ponds and infinity waterfalls that provide you relaxation and beauty in your yard. Our ponds and waterfalls are naturally balanced, lowmaintenance ecosystems that work with nature, not against it. We are often asked whether what we do is art or science. We believe it takes a good mixture of both. A correctly built water feature is very low maintenance. The art comes in to make it appear to have always existed in the surrounding landscape. We like to say that you will feel like you found the stream while hiking in the mountain, only we have prettier flowers! Why call us? Would you call your lawn guy to build you a sunroom or install your new kitchen? Do you want someone who does it right and stands behind their work? We don’t claim to do everything. We are water feature specialists that do it RIGHT! We offer a full one-year warranty on all materials and workmanship in the water garden installation. This includes material failure, leak repair, and any labor cost incurred for the repairs. career and 200 plus albums, this iconic Texan is the creative genius behind the historic recordings of Crazy, Red Headed Stranger, and Stardust. Willie Nelson has earned every conceivable award as a musician and amassed reputable credentials as an author, actor, and activist. He continues to thrive as a relevant and progressive musical and cultural force. In recent years, he has delivered more than a dozen new album releases, released a Top 10 New York Times’ bestsellers book, again headlined Farm Aid, an event he co-founded in 1985, received his 5th degree black belt in Gong Kwon Yu Sul, headlined the annual Luck Reunion food and music festival at his ranch in Luck, TX, during SXSW, launched his cannabis companies Willie’s Reserve and Willie’s Remedy, and graced the covers of Rolling Stone and AARP The Magazine. In 2015, Nelson published “It’s A Long Story: My Life,” the unvarnished and complete story of his life that landed him on the New York Times’ bestsellers list. He also released a new studio album with Merle Haggard titled Django and Jimmie, which debuted at number one on Billboard’s Country album chart and number 12

seven on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart. In November 2015, the Library of Congress honored Nelson with their Gershwin Prize for Popular Song for his contributions to popular music. He is the first country artist to receive the distinguished award. The following year began with the release of Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin, a collection of 11 newly recorded Gershwin classics. The album debuted at number one on both the Top Current Jazz chart and the Top Traditional Jazz chart, as well as earned him a Grammy Award for the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. In September 2016, For the Good Times: A Tribute to Ray Price, an album of newly recorded interpretations of 12 Ray Price

songs was released. In 2017, he released two albums of newly recorded performances: God’s Problem Child, with 13 new songs that debuted at number one on Billboard’s Country album chart and number 10 on the Billboard 200, and Willie Nelson and The Boys (Willie’s Stash, Vol. 2), that includes 11 country classics and one brand new song performed by Nelson and his sons, Lukas and Micah. In 2018, he released Last Man Standing in April to celebrate his 85th birthday. It is comprised entirely of songs newly-penned by Nelson (and long-time collaborator and producer Buddy Cannon). September saw the release of My Way, a collection of newly recorded standards and classics originally made famous by Nelson’s close friend and musical colleague Frank Sinatra. These new songs and performances add to his classic catalog and finds Willie Nelson rolling at a creative peak, writing and singing and playing with the seasoned wit and wisdom that comes from the road, which he still travels along performing for fans. Nelson will perform at the Tennessee Theatre on April 6 at 7:30 pm. For more information or tickets, visit www.tennesseetheatre.com.

Look around your home for that room or space that is not being used to its potential. Being adjacent to the master bedroom is not a necessity. In New York, an organizing client designed her dream home with the master on main floor, but her dressing room was in the basement. With a small closet in the master suite just for necessities, a large dressing room was down the steps next to the larder for dressing for day or evening events. When asked about the convenience of the main closet so far away from the bedroom, it was shared how nice it was to be away for the distraction of other household activities. This was her private sanctuary with a large island for drawers, and glass door cabinets held hanging garments. Shoes were displayed on pull-out shelves, and the room included a

comfortable chair. Closer to home in Knoxville, we have taken rooms no longer needed for grown children and made them a place to house clients’ collections of couture. In one, a large sitting room – that was never used – was claimed for a dream closet, which then allowed the old master to become the husband’s. In another project, a sunroom off the master was converted from a seldom used office to a wardrobe boutique. Even though a wall of windows is not ideal in a closet,

three walls were without obstruction, and that allowed lots of storage. When planning a major remodel or designing a new build, think twice about including windows in the closet. The most storage possible is utilizing an entire wall for a closet system. Not only can windows take away valuable storage, but sunlight will fade clothing. If you like natural light for dressing, consider how many times you dress before the sun is up or after the sun goes down. What is important is good lighting in your new closet. LED lighting gives the best light; never use florescent. And for just a bit more of an investment, consider adding lighting to your new closet system. Your appearance sets the tone for the entire day. Male or female, on a large estate or in a subdivision, a dressing room or closet that gives needed storage and provides a setting to inspire is certain to help you dress to impress!

The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family members how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Making Lasting First Impressions

W

ILL ROGERS,

A m e r i c a n c o wboy and humorist, was popularized with his quote, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” That quotation is as important today as it was when Will Rogers first shared it with his audience. Whether on a personal level or in a business setting, you truly only have one opportunity to make a positive and long-lasting first impression. At Farragut Dental Studio, Kairav Vyas, DDS went to great lengths to create a first impression that was comfortable, soothing, reassuring, and compassionate. “Many patients today are understandably anxious in a medical setting, whether there for a routine examination or a medical procedure,” said Dr. Vyas. “Before we launched Farragut Dental Studio, we gave a great deal of thought to the interior design of our dental studio. We also enlisted input from our patients.” When visiting Farragut Dental Studio, patients discover a warm and inviting reception area, as well as a friendly, heartfelt greeting from their receptionist, rather than the cold, often sterile feeling we experience when visiting a physician’s office. “We also wanted our studio to create a more modern appearance and feel, consistent with our commitment to today’s latest dental treatment technologies, which allows us to treat our patients in the least intrusive and efficient manner possible,” said Dr. Vyas. Patients also appreciate Farragut Dental Studio’s use of their glass consultation rooms, where a patient and doctor can review the patient’s condition, treatment options, and more using fullcolor, high-resolution monitors. “I feel that what makes the most lasting impression, however, is our consultative and communicative style of dentistry,” said Dr. Vyas. “By answering all of your questions upfront, and by communicating with you exactly what we’re doing during your treatment, patients feel better informed and much more comfortable.” If you would like to discover the difference that Dr. Vyas and his team of dental care specialists can make in your and your family’s dental care, they invite you to allow them to make a lasting first impression on you.

HEN FORMER VETERAN and

former Knoxville police officer, husband, and father of two, Jim Murray, sustained an injury from a fall in April 2016, he no longer had the full use of his arms for several months. “I couldn’t drive, lift heavy objects, or exercise like I wanted to,” said Jim. “During that time, I gained a significant amount of weight. I tried going to the gym but always found an excuse not to go. There was no accountability.” Jim’s weight gain resulted in high blood pressure and elevated triglycerides for which his family physician prescribed medication. “I was ashamed with what I allowed to happen with my weight and my health,” said Jim. “In December 2017, my wife saw my struggle and suggested I try a trainer. I was turning 50 in 2018 and weighed 232 pounds. I needed to do something.” Jim took his wife’s advice and began searching for a personal trainer that would be the right fit for him. “I heard about Fitness Together, and in January 2018, I made the commitment to myself and my family to lose 35 pounds and get back to the shape I was in when I was in my 30s as a police officer,” said Jim. “My trainer, Chip Gibson, has been working with me since I joined Fitness Together. Chip encourages me and holds me accountable. And I’ve have loved every minute of it!” During Jim’s fit test on his one-year anniversary, he weighed in at a lean 192 pounds – a 40-pound weight loss. He has lost 1.5” in his neck, 5.5” in his chest, 8” in his waist, and 4.5” in his hips. “I actually exceeding my goal!” he said. “I feel better physically and mentally than I have in many years, and my doctor has taken me off all my medications. A

FTER A LONG DAY, dig-

ging into a hearty pasta dish or a piping hot bowl of soup can fill you with warmth and coziness – especially on those chilly days. The good news is that comfort foods don’t have to be unhealthy or take a lot of time to make. We can still enjoy the rich, flavorful options that feed your cravings with easy-to-make dishes that incorporate wholesome, nutritious ingredients (some taken directly from your grocery store’s chilled foods section). Here are some helpful tips to enjoy comforting meals without the guilt: » Combine frozen and prepared foods with fresh produce. Frozen meals and pizzas, as well as chilled pasta, are the perfect bases for balanced meals and come in many varieties. Shop the refrigerator and freezer sections for your favorite dishes that you can simply pair with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy to create a balanced plate. It can be much easier and less time-consuming than cooking a full meal from scratch and leave you more time to do other activities beyond cooking. » Try recipes featuring a balance of protein, dairy, and vegetables. 18

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2019

Cozy up on the couch with a rich and tasty mug of minestrone soup loaded with seasonal vegetables. Adding refrigerated pasta like Buitoni Three Cheese Tortellini helps make it a complete meal, cutting time spent on preparation but not on taste. The blend of ricotta, Parmesan, and romano cheeses in the tortellini perfectly complements veggies like sweet potatoes, kale, and carrots in a steaming, herby broth. » Strategically mix in vegetables. There are several ways to sneak veggies into your favorite comfort foods. Sprinkle greens into scrambled eggs and quiches, incorporate shredded zucchini and carrots into baked goods, add spinach or broccoli to spaghetti sauce, or make pumpkin waffles. The possibilities are endless. » Use fruit to indulge your sweet tooth. For many people, comfort foods are all about desserts. Those striving to eat healthier can still enjoy their sweets in moderation but may wish to incorporate ingredients like fresh fruits so they also offer greater nutritional value. Consider warm berry cobblers, baked apples, carrot cake, and/or smoothies that make use of fruits and even veggies.

Instructions: Pre-heat instant pot to the sauté “normal” setting along with 1 teaspoon of oil. Add the bacon and cook for 5 minutes, then add the rosemary, thyme, and sage. Cook for 3 more minutes or until the bacon is golden in color, then add the onions, carrots, bell peppers, red pepper flakes, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and a few cracks of pepper. Mix well and turn the sauté setting to “more” on the instant pot and cook for 8 minutes. Add the garlic and cook another 6 minutes or until the veggies are soft and have wilted down by a good amount. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute, then add the kale, crushed tomatoes, beef stock, dried beans, Parmesan rind, bay leaf, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and a few cracks of pepper. Make sure you don’t add liquid past the max line on the instant pot. Mix well and check for seasoning; you will likely need a bit more salt. Press cancel on the instant pot, put the lid on, and set to pressure cook on high for 40 minutes. Once the cook time is done, let the instant pot sit for 10 minutes, then carefully release the pressure manually. Make sure to remove the bay leaf and Parmesan rind. When the soup is ready, bring a 4-quart pot of water to boil and cook the Buitoni Three Cheese Tortellini according to package instructions. Drain well and add the tortellini to the pot of soup and stir. Make the crostini by seasoning the tomatoes with 1 teaspoon of oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and a couple cracks of pepper, and roast in a 400F oven for 15-20 minutes. Once the tomatoes start to burst, they are ready. Toast the bread, schmear on some ricotta cheese, spread on the Buitoni Pesto with Basil, and top with roasted tomatoes. Serve the soup with the crostini and enjoy! Soup will keep for 3 days in the fridge or can be frozen for 3 months.

Is It Time for a Smile Assessment? I F YOU FIND yourself compar-

ing your smile to others whose smiles exhibit beautiful, straight, white teeth, then perhaps it’s time you discovered just how easy it can be to achieve a whiter, brighter smile. After all, how many of those people whose smiles you envy were actually born with that perfect smile? Probably not many. Let’s consider teeth straightening first. Did you know that there is a procedure – in fact, the most advanced teeth straightening system available anywhere – that has already helped more than six million people achieve straighter, more natural looking smiles? Called Invisalign, these transparent aligners incrementally adjust your teeth without the use of wire braces.

Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner. By combining 20 years of research and data from six million smiles, you can trust Invisalign to deliver the smile that you deserve. Invisalign is a modern, fully digitized experience designed to help you achieve the smile you want, the way you want it. Unlike other competitive clear aligners, Invisalign aligners use a proprietary SmartTrack® material that offers treatment times that are up to 50% faster. Patients report that Invisalign aligners fit and feel better. Also, innovations in the Invisalign procedure move more smiles, with greater predictability and control than competitive aligners. Perhaps what you will appreciate most

about the Invisalign system is that it is administered and supervised by your family dentist and not some third party dentist or orthodontist who will recommend your treatment without ever having met you. After all, who knows you better than your family dentist? To learn how Invisalign can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865-816-9211 today to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation evaluation.

Are Keratin Treatments Beneficial? BY JORDAN BIVENS GRUBB

O

UR HAIR is made of keratin, which

often becomes deficient as we age, by exposure to environmental factors, or by styling. Keratin, which is rich in amino acids, strengthens our hair and makes it more elastic. The deficiency of keratin results in hair that has a frizzy appearance and a noticeable loss of sheen. While nothing can heal damaged hair, a keratin treatment can help you manage the damage to your hair while your natural hair gradually returns. Keratin treatments help replenish your hair’s natural keratin protein, making your hair color appear more natural. Suitable for all hair types, a keratin treatment will give you smooth, healthier hair that can be styled any way you prefer. It reduces frizz and unwanted volume for better manageability. Also, it can be used over any chemical service.

While nothing can heal damaged hair, a keratin treatment can help you manage the damage to your hair while your natural hair gradually returns. During a keratin treatment, your hair is first shampooed and then blow dried to remove all moisture. The keratin complex is then applied to your hair and allowed to remain for approximately 20 minutes. The treatment is completed with the application of heat from a blow dryer and flat iron, which locks in the treatment. Your treatment should last approximately three months. All that you are left with is smooth, natural looking hair and a beautiful luster. Your hair is strengthened and nourished as nature had intended. If you would like to learn more about keratin treatments and how they may benefit you and your hair, I invite you to call me today. You, too, can have beautiful, natural looking hair.

Is Your Dog’s Food Healthy?

ON’T ALLOW fancy packaging

to lead you in the wrong direction. Always read the list of ingredients! Ingredients are listed in the order of the weight. Look for top-quality “animal protein,” listed by species, with chicken, duck, lamb, beef, or salmon as the initial ingredient. Listing “meat” without specifics is an example of a low-quality protein of a dubious origin. There should also be a named animal protein “meal” (for example, chicken meal). Avoid “meat” meal or “poultry” meal. Whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, and other carbohydrate sources such as potatoes, peas, chickpeas, or sweet potatoes should be the next ingredients. One does not want to see “corn” listed in the ingredients, as we fatten hogs on corn. Our dogs are not hogs! Avoid foods that list “byproducts” or “byproduct” meal. Some of the animal tissues that go into making “byproducts” are nutritious, such as liver, blood, bone, fat, intestines, lungs, and kidneys; however, because they are not meant for human consumption, they are not required to be kept clean and chilled through processing and

transport. This can be dangerous to the dog. Avoid “generic” fat sources such as “animal fat,” as these can be obtained from renderers that process dead animals. There should be no added sweeteners. Sweeteners are used to entice dogs to eat foods comprised mainly of grain fragments. If the food looks like candy, the nutritional value is probably very low. Artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives should not be present. The food should be flavored enough with healthy meats, fats, and other ingredients to be enticing. Natural preservatives such as vitamins E & C and rosemary extracts should be used instead. Always check the “best by” date on the label to ensure freshness. It should be at least six months away. Along with your veterinarian, John & JeanAnn at Ms. C’s will be happy to provide more information regarding dog nutrition.

GRAHAM NASH I

B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

HAVE OFTEN heard it said that the

baby boomer generation had the greatest music. I happen to agree wholeheartedly. One of the reasons I feel that way is because of the iconic work by the legendary Graham Nash – whether it was his work during his time with The Hollies or the prolific period with Crosby, Still, Nash (and sometimes Young), or in his various solo pursuits. Because Nash was, once again, going to be performing in East Tennessee (this time at Chattanooga’s Walker Theater), I was granted the opportunity to chat with the musical icon about his latest album, Over the Years, and the supporting tour. When I mentioned that he was going to be playing in Chattanooga (easy driving distance from me) and that I met with him during his show in Knoxville (even closer to me), he interjected with this neat bit of news: “You know, in Knoxville, I was approached by the City Council just very quickly. The idea was that the Everly Brothers spent the first eight years of their life in Knoxville. They were on their parents’ radio show in Knoxville. So the Knoxville City Council approached me and said that they’re going to make a small park in honor of the Everly Brothers. Part of their design is that on the walk through the park, there are marble stones on the floor that are carved with quotes from quite famous people about the Everly Brothers. They wanted to know if I could help find people that would give a small quote and get permission to put their signature carved into the marble. So far I have me, of course. I have Keith Richards. I have McCartney. I have Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Brian Wilson. Incredible stuff, you know? I just thought I’d tell you that because you’re familiar with Knoxville. How 26

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2019

could I not be involved when it’s the Everly Brothers? They’re part of the reason we are talking right now!” The new album, Over the Years, is a fantastic, must-have collection of some of Nash’s work. I asked him to tell me about the album. “I realized a year ago that there’d never been a Greatest Hits of my music,” he said. “Yes, Greatest Hits of CSN. Greatest Hits of CSNY. Greatest Hits of The Hollies, etc. But not of me, personally. So I went on the internet and found out what my friends’ 15 most favorite songs of mine are, and I put them on. And then I thought, ‘You know, people have probably bought all this music – maybe even several times. How could I make it more interesting and more desirable?’ So I decided that I would go into my archives and find the demos of those songs and put them on. That’s what it became. The artwork was done by my wife, Amy Grantham.” Over the Years is a two-disc collection that includes original demos of some of Nash’s biggest hits. I asked him which song he would point to as a calling card for the collection. “It would be ‘Marrakesh Express’ because that was the demo that I sent The Hollies, and they made a very half-hearted attempt to record it,” he said. “To me, in my mind and

being the writer of that song, I needed the energy of a moving train through it, which Stephen Stills brilliantly did on the CSN version of Marrakesh. I think if people hear the original demo, they’ll realize a couple of things. One is that the arrangement of the song didn’t change that much from my demos. I notice that the arrangement of each was already complete in my mind when I made the demo. ‘Teach Your Children,’ of course, is another one. I started that song in the north of England, and I finished it in Los Angeles in early ’69. But you can hear that the arrangement – apart from the fact that there’s a solo in there that was done, of course, by Jerry Garcia – is pretty much the same as my demo.” Graham Nash is touring this year, and East Tennessee is privileged to have one of the tour stops being in Chattanooga. I asked him what fans could expect from the show. “They can expect me to want to be there,” he said. “I want them to know that I want to be there making music for them, and I also want to see them smile on their way out so I know that I’ve done my job.” As of this writing, a few tickets to put that kind of smile on your face – courtesy of Graham Nash – are available and can be purchased by visiting www. TivoliChattanooga.com. You can also read the extended version of this interview at www.Boomerocity.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity. com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Introducing

Kelly D’s at the KELLY D’S at the MANSION Mansion in Historic Downtown Sweetwater

A

LIFELONG RESIDENT of Monroe

County, Kelly Raper Dalton recently realized her lifelong dream of owning a tea room style restaurant featuring a uniquely Southern flare. Her new restaurant named Kelly D’s at the Mansion occupies the second floor restaurant space located within Sweetwater Flower Shop. Kelly’s love for cooking began at an early age when she spent many hours with her mom, Pat, in the family kitchen. “Mom was a great cook,” said Chef Kelly. “It was an incredible experience.” Kelly’s culinary career first started when she began catering weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and other special events. She also gained valuable restaurant management experience along the way. Kelly’s other interests include singing, horseback riding, and bowling. Kelly D’s at the Mansion officially opened with their day-long grand opening on Saturday, February 2. The grand opening featured samples of many of the items that appear on her menu, including homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, paninis, and teas – all served with Kelly’s unique southern flair. Kelly wishes to express her appreciation for the estimated 500 people that attended her day-long event. Kelly D’s specialties include chicken salad, pimento cheese, homemade dumplings, and daily specials, as well as a large selection of delectable sandwiches and heart healthy salads. She also promises that you will fall in love with her homemade pies and desserts! Restaurant hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11 am to 3 pm. Kelly D’s will be closed on Tuesdays and Saturdays but hopes to possibly be open on Saturdays in the near future. For a truly culinary treat with a unique Southern flare, you are invited to visit Kelly D’s at the Mansion, located within Sweetwater Flower Shop in historic downtown Sweetwater. Be sure to introduce yourself to Chef Kelly, who delights in greeting guests.

A Winning Consignment Strategy

A

DARRELL SCOTT April 4 • 8 PM • Bijou Theatre

M

ULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST

and singer-songwriter, Darrell Scott, mines and cultivates the everyday moment, taking the rote, menial, mundane, and allowing it to be surreal, ever poignant, and candidly honest, lilting, blooming, and resonating. The words he fosters allow us to make sense of the world, what is at stake here, and our place in it. Ultimately, Scott knows the sole truth of life is that love is all that matters; that we don’t always get it right, but that’s the instinctive and requisite circuitous allure of things, why we forever chase it, and why it is held sacred. Scott comes from a musical family with a father who had him smitten with guitars by the age of four, alongside a brother who played Jerry Reed style as well. From there, things only ramped up with literature and poetry endeavors while a student at Tufts University, along with playing his way through life. This would never change. After recently touring with Robert Plant and the Zac Brown Band and producing albums for Malcolm Holcomb and Guy Clark and being named “Songwriter of the Year” for both ASCAP and NSAI, these days find him roaming his Tennessee wilderness acreage hiking along the small river, creating delicious meals with food raised on his property, and playing music. He often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their own truths with their stories and is as busy as always writing, producing, performing, and just plain fully immersing himself in life.

RE YOU NEW to the consignment

marketplace? Well, here’s a surefire strategy to earn the most money when consigning your gently used, name brand ladies’ apparel and accessories. Consignment shopping has been growing by leaps and bounds in recent years, and there is money to be made when you follow these simple tips on how to make the most of your consignment experience at Next To New. First, check your closet for merchandise that you no longer wear. Ask yourself, “Would I buy this again now?” If you answer no, consider selling these items yourself or donating them to charity. The condition of the item and the original purchase date are key points. You may have a terrific suit with the original tags, but if you bought it 10 years ago, today’s fashion savvy consignment customer will likely pass it by. Before visiting your consignment store, check your items closely for any defects. A “pull here” or a “snag there” significantly reduces your chance for success. Make sure your items are cleaned or dry cleaned as necessary. All clothing should be pressed and presented on hangers. Customers will reward you for your efforts. If you love it, just keep it. This should be an emotion-free business opportunity. Here are 10 important things to consider when consigning: 1. At Next To New, we carry all major mall brands and all boutique designers. 2. Familiarize yourself with the brands the consignment store carries. 3. Consign items in season. 4. Consign best-selling sizes: For women, it’s sizes 10-16. 5. Consign designer accessories in any size. 6. Consign popular brands or classic brands that stand the test of time. 7. Bring a minimum of 20 flawless items (no missing buttons, stains, cleaned, pressed, and ready to sell) for the store to consider. 8. Be realistic about the current market value of your merchandise. 9. Next To New markets online, on local and cable TV, in magazines, and by email. 10. Our goal is to help you make as much money as possible. Visit Next To New to learn more and to give your closet some much deserved breathing room. Our success is your success!

Big Ears Festival Focuses on 50 Years of ECM 4 Days, 100+ Concerts, 12 Venues + Films, Exhibitions, Discussions, and Interactive Experiences

March 21-24 in Downtown Knoxville

D URING THE LAST

decade, Big Ears has emerged as the United States’ pre-eminent festival for exploratory music. This year the festival honors a visionary international institution that has always operated with the same outlook – ECM Records, the bordererasing label launched by producer Manfred Eicher that has now spent half a century tirelessly pursuing new frontiers and standards of excellence in jazz and classical music. At Big Ears 2019, some 20 concerts featuring legendary artists such as The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Meredith Monk, Carla Bley, Jack DeJohnette, and a new generation of torchbearing talents like Vijay Iyer, Craig Taborn, Avishai Cohen, and Shai Maestro form the largest group of ECM acts under one banner in the United States (and one of the largest in the world) during this auspicious 50th year. ECM’s ethos for the last 50 years dovetails perfectly with Big Ears’ own principles – and has from the start. The label has unwavering

30

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2019

standards of excellence, using an unmistakable visual identity and rigorous production goals to build a redoubtable aesthetic. ECM has long served as a stable platform for its artists to venture into the unknown, too, to make music that defied the boundaries of safety and expectation within their chosen form. And their long-term relationships with artists have allowed musicians to evolve and experiment, testing new ideas in a space that welcomed them. In a decade of presenting both innovators and icons and welcoming new projects from familiar faces, Big Ears has pursued a similar ideal. This is evident simply by looking at Big Ears’ past rosters, dotted by artists associated with ECM, including Evan Parker, Steve Reich, Roscoe Mitchell, and Theo Bleckmann. This year’s ECM celebration at Big Ears is a natural continuation of that investment in and enthusiasm for what the label represents. These concerts at Big Ears 2019 are a collective testament to the label’s enduring vitality, to the breadth and depth they have added to

modern music. Many of the artists who helped shape ECM’s pioneering role in previous decades will be on hand – exquisite and exploratory guitarists Ralph Towner, Bill Frisell, and David Torn, who have all released records on ECM for decades; legendary jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette, who recorded Ruta And Daitya with Keith Jarrett in 1971; classical viola virtuoso Kim Kashkashian, who has played on three-dozen ECM titles. Wadada Leo Smith returns to perform his ECM classic Divine Love. They will be joined by projects asking new questions about the outer limits of form and genre, like pianist Nik Bärtsch’s pulsating RONIN and saxophonist Tim Berne’s radically exploratory Snakeoil. Big Ears 2019 will pull ECM’s influence across genre and generation into one long weekend, putting it into conversation with the rest of modern music throughout the entire festival. ECM performances at Big Ears 2019 include, in alphabetical order, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Arvo Pärt’s Passioperformed by St. John’s Choir, Avishai Cohen Quartet, Bill Frisell & Thomas Morgan, Carla Bley TRIOS with Andy Sheppard and Steve Swallow, David Torn, DeJohnette Coltrane Garrison, Larry Grenadier, Kim Kashkashian, Kim Kashkashian & Robert Levin, Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble Cellular Songs Concert, Mathias Eick Quintet, Nik Bärtsch’s RONIN, Ralph Towner, Shai Maestro, Sun of Goldfinger (David Torn, Tim Berne, Ches Smith), Tim Berne’s Snakeoil, Vijay Iyer & Craig Taborn, Wadada Leo Smith’s Nda, performing Divine Love with Bobby Naughton, and Dwight Andrews. Tickets for Big Ears Festival 2019, which is March 21-24 in Knoxville, are on sale now at www.bigearsfestival.org. Enhanced ticket packages include new perks for the VIP Sonic Explorer ticket, such as access to exclusive kick-off and after-party events and more. In addition, individual donors who support Big Ears Festival can join the Friends of Big Ears program, where benefits include special experiences between now and the festival and a discount on 2019 passes. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Big Ears Festival provides free programming to the community thanks to generous festival sponsors and partners. More information is available on the Big Ears website under the “support” section.

Life is Going to Throw You a Curve Ball: Will You Be Ready?

I

DO YOU HAVE A RETIREMENT TAX EXPERT? LIVING IN RETIREMENT REQUIRES DIFFERENT TAX STRATEGIES. UNDERSTANDING THOSE DIFFERENCES IS WHAT WE DO. WE DON’T JUST PREPARE TAXES, WE LOOK FOR WAYS TO MINIMIZE THEM.

POINTS OF FOCUS:

B Y Y V O N N E M A R S H , C F P ® , C PA

F THERE’S ONE THING

I’ve learned from my financial planning clients, it’s that life doesn’t always turn out like we think. We get laid off five years from retirement, or our beloved wife is diagnosed with dementia, or our strong husband dies Yvonne Marsh, before he turns 60, or the markets CFP®, CPA drop 40% the year after our parents retire and their plans of travel and relaxation are forever replaced with worry and penny-pinching. As a financial planner, I am a teacher and a student. I observe and study and learn how my most successful clients think and act. I don’t define success by how much money they have; I define success by how confident they are in their unknown future. They are confident because they don’t guess; they plan for the curve balls, and you can, too. » Have enough life insurance to make sure your family can maintain their lifestyle and pay for college if the primary income earner dies. My office manager’s 42-year-old friend just died in an accident, leaving behind a wife and a seven year old who needs a heart transplant. » Have a plan if the primary breadwinner in your family is disabled before he/she retires. Review your employer’s disability insurance. If you’re selfemployed, buy your own policy. You’re more apt to be disabled early in life than die, yet we plan for it less. » Save first, spend second. I ask my clients what they think their smartest financial decision has been, and invariably they say that they lived below their means and started saving early and regularly. So pay yourself first – contribute to your 401(k) and get an employer match plus tax savings. Set up an auto draft and save monthly no matter how big or small. » A 2013 DHHS survey found that 37% of people thought they would need long-term care, yet more than 70% of people actually do need it (defined as home health, assisted living, or full-skilled care). I’ve helped a wife complete paperwork to receive the LTC insurance benefits for her husband’s Alzheimer’s care, and I’ve helped a wife with no LTC decide which assets to sell to pay for her husband’s care. The first conversation was easier. You can be successfully confident in your financial future, too. Plan for the curve balls. Give us a call to learn more.

It’s Not Your Father’s Garage G

ONE ARE the days of a dirty, oil-

stained, and cracked garage floor. Today’s garage floor coatings leave the garage looking like a showroom. Garage floors have a hard life. They are subject to constant pressure from the car and hot tires as you drive over them, as well as temperature extremes and abuse from oil drips and substances brought in on your tires. As a result, the concrete often ends up cracking and crumbling. There are a few flooring options to protect your concrete; however, not all floor coatings are created equal. The decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, developed and installed by PremierGarage. “There have been many improvements in coating technology during the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” said Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard wearing coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option, and floors are designed to last the test of time.” Polyurea flooring systems present the most-advanced, fast-curing, and hardening system in concrete flooring technology. It withstands more abuse and impact than any traditional epoxy coating. It also provides

S

better protection against harmful agents like oils, chemicals, and gas, and it doesn’t stain, crack, or peel. PremierGarage’s polyurea floor coating will look new for years to come. While do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely available and easy to work with, the down side is many things can go wrong when applying the coating. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes a long time for the epoxy to dry and bond to the floor. While the cost of epoxy is initially less expensive, epoxy also quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tires bond to the surface

and peel it away from the concrete. For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, PremierGarage technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other benefits of PremierGarage’s professionally installed flooring coating over epoxy is: » Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling, or blistering from hot tires and abrasions » Chemical, UV, stain, and slip-resistant » Commercial-grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years » Easy to clean Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements and retail stores. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage!

Random Acts of Flowers’ Volunteer Spirit

INCE ITS BEGINNING in

2008, the growth of Random Acts of Flowers has been quite remarkable. During the past 10 years, Random Acts of Flowers has delivered more than 98,000 bouquets of re-purposed flowers to individuals in healthcare facilities here in the Greater Knoxville area. With a staff of just one full-time employee, two parttime employees, and an intern, the only way Random Acts of Flowers can create and deliver this many personal moments of kindness is thanks to its dedicated, funloving, and hard-working volunteer base. In 2018 alone, Random Acts of Flowers volunteers put more than 11,750 hours into delivering hope – collecting flower donations from grocery stores, florists, and events around the area, sorting and preparing the flowers, and repurposing them into beautiful individual bouquets. Volunteers come to Random Acts of Flowers for a variety of reasons. Some volunteer to enjoy the comradery of being with others that enjoy giving back to the community. Some volunteer as part of a corporate day of service. Some find floral arranging therapeutic. Some volunteer in honor of a friend or family member that received one 36

of our bouquets. Some volunteer because they themselves have been the recipient of a Random Acts of Flower bouquet! Whatever the reason for their participation, our volunteers are critical to our being able to carry out our mission of delivering hope and personal moments of kindness to people in our community that most need one. 2019 is off to a great start, and our volunteers are eager to make it a year that is even more rewarding and fun than 2018

was, which is really saying something! As Random Acts of Flowers continues to grow, there is always room for more volunteers. Even if you have never worked with flowers or made a bouquet, not to worry! Experienced volunteers teach and train newcomers until they are comfortable and confident. Come join the fun and know that your effort is making someone else’s day better! of-doors in? The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless possibilities to enjoy your home’s backyard experience. In East Tennessee, homeowners are creating more and more outdoor living spaces, yet are you really enjoying your new spaces to their full potential? In many parts of the country, if your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. And here’s why. Homeowners are increasingly adding outdoor “rooms,” such as porches and lanais with kitchens, complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from fully enjoying their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide a solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy being outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of biting insects that can spoil your family’s evening events. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s aesthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of today’s retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help to blend your screens with your home’s existing interior or exterior color schemes. Your screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is required. For more information about how to begin enjoying your home’s outdoor living areas to their fullest potential, call 865-919-1615 or visit www. tennesseescreens.com.

March in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

E ARE NOW march-

ing into spring! However, I’ll warn you that this is the month when everyone tends to lose their mind. Days get warm, and you’ll start thinking about annuals and tomatoes and other spring plants. Yes, we’re going to have some gorgeous days, but Mother Nature is a fickle creature. She’ll trick you into thinking that we’re having an early spring then break your heart by sending those temps plummeting like a stone from the sky. The average last frost is April 15th, and we had a hard freeze on that date last year. Don’t rush the season. » Early March is, however, a good time to finalize your plans for the season. What needs to be done in your yard? What needs to be added, removed, divided, pruned, fertilized, or replaced? Would you like to add a bird or pollinator friendly area? Do you need to scale back on plants that require too much maintenance? Now’s the time to make these decisions and call for landscape installation. » Let’s talk about landscapers. We work with some truly talented, good landscaping companies. We’ve also had some come in that literally did not know a nandina from a holly. Ask and call around, and remember that cheaper is not always best. A good landscaper will install plants that can

improve the value of your home and last for many years. It’s better to pay a little more for someone who will put the right plant in the right place the right way. » Are you ready to play in the dirt? The first thing to do is remove all those weeds! I have a plethora of green onions, henbit, popweed, and chickweed threatening to take over my yard, and I’m sure you do, too. Remove those and get your spring application of a pre-emergent down. If you prefer not to use chemicals, arm yourself with a trowel or ball weeder, gloves, and a Hula hoe. Weeding is very therapeutic, and many of those “weeds” are edible and nutritious! » If you didn’t add compost to your soil in the fall, you can do that now. It will begin breaking down and adding nutrients to your soil. Make sure that manure and wood products are well aged, however, or they will damage your plants. » If you’re not planting, add fresh mulch to your beds or fluff up the mulch that’s already there. I also recommend mulching around trees to protect them from weed whacker damage. (Dogwoods are particularly vulnerable.) Remember that 3” is adequate, and you should have donuts and not volcanoes around your trees. » Plant trees, shrubs, and cool season

perennials as soon as the ground is workable. I know many of you have a bog in your yard right now, so it’s best to wait until it’s a little dryer. Cold, wet soil is not good for plants. Sooth that itch by planting containers or just getting the area ready. » You can start warm season annual and vegetable seeds inside. By mid-month, you can plant your precious tomatoes and peppers! They need to stay inside, however. Create a “greenhouse” in a sunny window or use artificial light. Call if you have questions. » Cool-season greens, onion sets, beets, carrots, potatoes, and radishes can be seeded directly into the ground (if nature cooperates). Seedlings of cole crops can go in the ground mid-month. This includes head lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. » You can fertilize trees and shrubs after the middle of the month. If using a chemical fertilizer, please read the directions. Some of you think if a little is good, a lot is better. Chemical burns are hard for plants to withstand. I generally use organic products so burning isn’t an issue. Organic products also have a slower release rate, so there isn’t the danger of generating new growth before we’re out of frost danger. You can also fertilize perennials when they begin to show new growth, crocus after blooms have faded, and daffodils when they start to yellow. » Divide and transplant summer blooming perennials such as daylilies, hosta, and Siberian iris when it warms up and the soil is workable. » I really hate to say these words, but you can prune summer flowering shrubs like roses and (oh, how I hate to say this) Crepe Myrtles before they start putting on new growth. It’s also a good idea to prune out any dead or damaged wood from trees and shrubs. Please educate yourself. There is a very hard line between pruning and butchering. » Grasses and groundcovers can also be cut back now. Shorter grasses can be run over with a lawnmower on its highest setting. Large grasses are easiest if you tie them with twine and cut below. Leave a foot or so to protect the baby shoots. » Your perennials may need a makeover after this wet, rollercoaster spring. Once the new growth has emerged at the base of your perennials and they are happily growing, cut all that ugly old stuff off. If you have questions, please call. » Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders clean and full of a good quality birdseed, and keep birdbaths clean and full when they aren’t frozen. High fat foods such as black oil sunflower seeds and suet are best this time of year. Stop by and check out our new shipments or give us a call if you have questions. We want to help you have a beautiful yard!

ORE OFTEN THAN not we receive inquiries from

homeowners who have recently visited friends and relatives that have installed an underdecking system on their home’s raised deck. I think it’s the appealing aesthetics that first catches their eye. Let’s face it: The underside of a deck as viewed from the patio below is dreary at best. If you have ever investigated underdecking systems, you’ve already discovered that there are a variety of options to choose from. That’s why I would like to highlight a system that I truly believe you will find superior to any other system available. First of all, we don’t purchase generic “off-the-shelf” components. All of the materials we install at your home were manufactured and fabricated at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility specifically for your project. We use only 22 gauge galvanized steel coated with a Dura Coat polyester paint. Many of our competitors use a light gauge aluminum substitute. Our patented system does not attach itself to the underside of your deck. Our system is fully supported by our gutter system that is installed along the perimeter of your raised deck. This protects your deck by promoting the free circulation of air that aides in the drying of your deck’s support joists. All we install is Undercover Systems’ patented decking systems. We are not remodeling contractors installing windows today, cabinets tomorrow, and siding the day after. All of our installers are factory trained and certified. I think that what our clients appreciate most is that I, Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems of Tennessee, personally supervise each and every installation. In fact, I often help install our patented underdecking system as well. If you have ever considered installing an underdeck system under your home’s raised deck, I invite you to discover why Undercover Systems is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and why we have received the much coveted Consumers’ Choice Award and Green Business Certification. Available in a variety of color options and our premium bead board design, discover how you can better enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces by protecting your family from unexpected rain and the searing sun with Undercover Systems’ patented underdecking system.

winter landscape is hellebore, as it is commonly known. Botanically it is known as Helleborus. You may also know it as Christmas rose or Lenten rose because of its rose-like flowers that are in bloom during winter and early spring around the Christian observance of Lent. The genus name Helleborus originates from the Greek words helein, which means to injure, and bora, which means food. Put together, these Greek words indicate that the plant is bitter and toxic to eat. There are about 15 species of hellebore, and all have some ornamental value. The most popular are the Oriental hybrid hellebores (Helleborus x hybridus cvs.). Recent breeding and hybridizing have expanded the palette of hellebore, and unique flower and foliage forms and textures have resulted in reviving interest in this woodland perennial. We now have incredible selections with improved characteristics such as new flower colors, double flowers, variegated foliage, and flowers that stand erect rather than nodding. Some of the most exciting trends include truer and more unusual colors from amber to almost black, increased plant heights, and outward-facing blooms. Gardeners are not limited, however, to a rainbow of solid-color flowers. Hellebores can also have beautiful picotee edges (edges that are a different color than the rest of the flower) or veining to adorn the outside of the bloom. Inside the bloom, they can have spotting or a dark center that draws your eye into the flower. The varied hybrid offerings extend to the shape of the flowers as well. In addition to single, double, and star-shaped flowers, hellebores can have an anemone-flowered form, which looks like something between a single and a double. With the dizzying array of choices available, it’s easy to find a hellebore you will like. When purchasing a hellebore, the best way to ensure you are getting what you want is to buy it in bloom. February into April is the ideal time to shop your local garden centers and nurseries when they are stocked with a variety of selections in bloom. Hellebores are easy to grow if you provide organically rich soil and a part-shade location. Although plants need to be kept slightly moist when they are becoming established, they become relatively drought-tolerant with age. Plants tend to clump about two feet wide and two feet tall. Some hellebore will rapidly self-sow around the garden, and since many are now hybrids, you never know what color of bloom will result. The leathery foliage of hellebore looks best when sheared in late fall just before flowers and new growth emerge.

NE PLANT sure to brighten the

Because they flower when the weather is cool, they have an exceptionally long bloom time, often flowering from January to May. Most selections are cold hardy to USDA Hardiness Zones 5 (-20 degrees F) and are resistant to both deer and voles. Hellebores are the perfect winterflowering perennial for the woodland shade garden. They combine wonderfully well with flowering bulbs such as daffodils and snowdrops, as well as other shade-loving perennials like ferns, heuchera, foam flower, hosta, woodland phlox, and lungwort. They lend themselves well to being planted in the foreground of a garden and look great in a woodland setting when tucked in next to natural elements such as stone, stumps, and logs. If you have a slope, planting hellebores on a hillside allows you to see into the blooms on selections that have nodding flowers.

You can find numerous selections of Helleborous hybrids growing in all three UT Gardens locations across the state (Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson). Selections known to perform well, as reported by numerous horticulturists throughout Tennessee, include ‘Joseph Lemper,’ ‘Penny’s Pink,’ ‘Sparkling Diamonds,’ and ‘Golden Sunrise.’ The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www. ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

Can You Prevent Termite Damage?

We Find Termites

& Get Rid of Them!

By the time you see termites around your home, they’ve probably done some damage. Call the professionals before they do more!

T

HE VERY BEST way to help prevent

expensive termite damage to your home is to have Dayton’s do a FREE inspection. As the weather warms up, you’ll probably start seeing swarms of termites flying around. Imagine having thousands of termites hiding inside your home, unseen and unheard, to wreak havoc! Dayton’s professionals know how to uncover these “silent destroyers” and eliminate the problem. Some favorite gathering places for termites are your crawl space, basement, inside walls, and any kind of wood trim or flooring. Very little in size and looking like a small white ant, frequent places termites enter your house are through cracks, expansion joints, foam insulation extending below ground, inside or between hollow concrete blocks or brick veneer, and through spaces around plumbing pipes. Did you know that termites eat 24/7 every day? A termite colony can quickly expand to 10,000 termites – an infestation it’s best to avoid! The National Pest Management Association estimates that termites cause $5 billion in property damage every year. Dayton’s has the expertise to evaluate the severity of an infestation and recommend what type of treatment will take care of the problem. Usually the cost to REPAIR termite damage is HIGHER than the cost of termite CONTROL! New customers will receive $150 OFF a Termidor® HP Injection System or Sentricon® Colony Elimination System through April 2019. Other services Dayton’s provides include convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, monthly/quarterly/ one-time pest control services, pest control for ants/ wasps/bedbugs, carpenter bee control (April-Aug), mosquito control (May-Oct), fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing/mitigation.

Get Your Home Ready for Spring! BY CHRISTINA FITZWILLIAM, C O - O W N E R O F S U R FAC E D O C , I N C .

M

OST HOMEOWNERS around town know us for our exceptional

tile and grout, carpet, and indoor surface cleaning. We are thrilled to be known as the best in the area at what we do. In fact, a great portion of our clients have been with us for years, and most of our business comes from referrals. It’s not as known that in addition to specializing in all hard-surface cleaning, we also offer professional soft washing for your home. Perhaps you are familiar with pressure washing (or power washing) and have not heard of soft washing. First, to be clear, one should never pressure wash their home. The damage that occurs from this type of cleaning method can destroy your siding, stucco, shakes, and shingles. Soft wash is a completely different (lesser known) process than its more commonly known counterpart. In a soft wash, very little water pressure is used to preserve the integrity of your home. The cleaning happens from the detergents used, NOT from water being blasted upon the surface. The specialized detergents are specially formulated to cling to your home so that its properties have a chance to dwell, thereby killing mold, fungus, and other organic materials so they may be more easily rinsed away. By using a low-pressure rinse, the home is protected from not only damage, but also from washing stripes, window, and window seal damage. In addition, because soft washing uses a low-pressure spray, your foliage, shutters, and joints will remain intact and protected. If you are having issues with mold streaking the outside of your home, or dull and stained gutters, it is time to call a professional. Black streaks on roofs are not only unsightly, but they must be dealt with before permanent damage occurs. It is impossible to simply wash off these elements, and scrubbing will be futile. Each home is unique in the challenges it presents, and each requires a unique solution. Surface Doc is specifically qualified to tackle each element and the challenges they present. When you call us, you can be assured we will call you back promptly. Our team knows what they are doing and look forward to meeting all of your cleaning needs… inside and out.

S

urface Doc now offers “Soft Washing” of siding and roofs for both businesses and homeowners, including stucco, cedar, vinyl, aluminum, stone, brick, slate, clay, asphalt, etc. Now Surface Doc will safely clean your siding and roof without the use of high pressure. Custom Closet Systems Keep the Family Organized and Happy

M

OST FAMILIES have both

organized and messy individuals, and they don’t always live in sweet harmony. Constantly tripping over someone’s shoes in the middle of the floor gets old and frustrating. Organization is not a natural inclination for everyone, but it is essential to a less stressful life. And when you live with others, it’s also a courtesy to maintain your own stuff and space. Tailored Living of Knoxville can help get life under control for all your family members with custom closet systems to meet the specific needs of each person. Kids’ Closets that Grow with Them It’s never too early to start introducing the habit of organization into your child’s world. Starting with a closet they can manage on their own or with a little help, as this encourages them to be organized and responsible. There really is no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all” kid’s closet, but a basic design includes: Preschool and Grade School » Low-level bins and shelves for toys and shoes they can put away themselves » Tiered hanging rods multiply the hanging space and are adjustable as they grow » Drawers or slide-out baskets to put away socks, pajamas, and underwear

Middle School and Teen » Tiered hanging rods for long and short items, scaled to the child’s height » Adjustable shelves for clothes, shoes, books, and favorite collections » Decorative hooks create easy storage for jackets and backpacks » A pull-out laundry hamper corrals dirty clothes and keeps the floor clear » Drawers can organize folded clothes or be customized with dividers to hold small items Shared Master Closets that Keep the Peace A shared closet can be a perpetually frustrating experience, but it doesn’t have to be. With a carefully designed space, a shared closet can provide individual, organized storage for two, accommodating both wardrobes and accessories. Each person will have space for what they need so they aren’t competing for territory by including: » His and hers hanging sections and drawers, including a jewelry drawer for her » Dedicated individual shoe racks » Shelves for folded items, hats, purses, and more » Tilt-out hamper to toss dirty clothes » Specialty racks for belts and ties » Retractable valet rods are an extra hand for putting an outfit together or handling dry cleaning

Slide-out baskets in a child’s closet helps them see their things and keeps them more organized.

Whatever your needs, Tailored Living of Knoxville will design a custom closet for any member of your family. As whole-home organization specialists, Tailored Living also has innovative storage solutions for the pantry, laundry, home offices, garage, and more. We help turn chaos into calm!

Cave Twins to Release Debut Album March 15

WITH WHIMSICAL

lyrics and a solid musical grounding in Americana tradition, David Mayfield and Abby Rose are taking advantage of their combined songwriting skills and tight harmonies to propel their new duo group, Cave Twins, into the Indie music spotlight. Each artist has seen success separate from their new pairing – as solo acts, within other groups, and behind the scenes in the producer’s chair. Together Mayfield and Rose complement one another’s musical stylings to create a pleasant, light hearted mix of what some have called “cute little songs and shorter, cuter little songs.” Their self-produced debut album, Best Friends for Now (releasing March 15), provides an uplifting outlook on the notion of friendship and how adult humans relate while maintaining a focus on endorsing science and a peaceful way of life, two causes that are deeply important to the pair. Cave Twins have been compared to other superb indie Americana duos, including Moldy Peaches and the Civil Wars. Their story, however, runs much deeper than two compatible artists collaborating on a new project. Mayfield and Rose are identical twin siblings, but they didn’t know it until well into their adulthood, with separate musical careers 48

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2019

under their belts. But it is not their sordid past or their chilling tale of separation and journey back to one another, however, that sets Rose and Mayfield apart. Their innate ability to harmonize, their functioning as one musical body, and a laser focus on creating well written songs with instrumental integrity is what makes this duo so special. Mayfield, a Grammy and Emmy nominated artist and producer, grew up playing bass and touring in his family’s bluegrass band. Establishing himself from a young age as an award-winning picker on guitar and mandolin, Mayfield went on to tour and record with groups such as The Avett Brothers, The Black Keys, and Mumford & Sons. His television and radio credits include The Late

Show with David Letterman and The Grand Ole Opry. Abby grew up alone. She turned to songwriting and music as an outlet to feel both heard and understood, attending Kent State University, where she participated in local festivals as a solo artist, and later toured extensively with Northeast Ohio supergroup The Speedbumps. When Rose discovered she had a twin brother named David Mayfield, the trajectory of her life and career changed, and from their long-lost history the Cave Twins duo was born. From the title track to the notably innocent “With You,” Rose and Mayfield expertly blend Americana instrumentation with ethereal vocals and positive, lighthearted lyrical themes. What they leave behind as a result is a haunting mix of contentment, newfound security (no doubt born from their own newfound security in one another), and wanderlust. All jokes aside and sordid histories aside, the Cave Twins are a refreshing breakout Americana act. Best Friends for Now will be available for purchase and streaming March 15th. The duo has planned a corresponding release tour, with two stops in Knoxville on April 13 at the Blue Plate Special and Barley’s. For more information, visit www.cavetwins.com.

The vast variety of household items that we accept for consignment, combined with the personalities and stories of both our consignors and customers, provide an endless source of fascinating anecdotes. investment in your kitchen can breathe new life into the space. Even if you’re not planning to sell your home anytime soon, doing a few upgrades in the kitchen will add value and make it more enjoyable to live in. Here are some upgrades to consider without taking on a full renovation. Paint the cabinets and update the hardware Older cabinets ca n ma ke your home look outdated. If your cabinets are in good condition but the color could use a boost, you can sand and refinish the cabinets yourself or hire a professional to do it for you. Bright white cabinets will make the space look clean and inviting. Install new hardware for a nice finishing touch to modernize the look. Create organization and storage with pull-out shelving D o y o u w a nt m or e s t or a ge , b e t t e r organization, and easier access to the items in your kitchen? Consider installing pull-out shelving in your cabinets and pantry. Storage, organization, and access to everyday items are essential in every working kitchen. Everyone wants a beautiful kitchen, but make sure you are also updating the functionality to suit your lifestyle. Pull-out shelving will provide you with both a modern look and increased functionality. Paint the kitchen walls Add a pop of color to your kitchen to give it life. A fresh coat of paint will brighten up your space and make it look clean and welcoming. Painting is an easy and inexpensive way to update the look of your kitchen. Change the backsplash In addition to outdated cabinets, an older style backsplash will make your kitchen look dated. Invest in a tile that has a timeless look so it will work for years to come. Modern glass, mosaic tile, or classic white subway tile are good options. Replace the lighting Under cabinet lighting, stylish pendant lights, and updated fixtures can brighten your space and make it easier to use. With so many options available, you can find lighting that is modern and affordable. Changing the bulbs to LEDs in existing fixtures will also cast a better light and boost energy savings. Even if you can’t afford to upgrade everything all at once, consider doing one upgrade at a time, or pick the upgrades that are most important to you. With some small changes, you can add value to your home and increase how much you enjoy your space.

Park City Revival: New Life for an Old House

T

HE LATEST Knox Heritage

renovation project has transformed a blighted property in the Park City National Register District into a beautiful home once again. Other homes in the area are also getting a new lease on life as a result of revived interest in this historically important neighborhood. Park City was one of a ring of suburbs developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that surrounded Knoxville. When the district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, it had the most intact portion of the municipality that was once known as Park City. Major streets in the area include Winona Street, Washington, Jefferson, and Woodbine Avenues stretching eastward to Cherry Street and East Fifth Avenue from Winona Street to Beaman Street. The historic homes in the neighborhood date from about 1880 to 1940 and feature a variety of architectural styles, including Queen Anne, Eastlake, and Folk Victorian, as well as many “revival” styles such as Dutch Colonial, Tudor Revival, Neoclassical, and American Four Square. In 1990, there were 944 buildings counted in the district, and 891 of them were considered “contributing structures.” A contributing structure is one that has been classified as adding to the historical integrity or architectural qualities that make the district historic and significant. One of those contributing structures is 3031 East Fifth Avenue. The residence was built in 1912 for Frank C. Wilson, a superintendent at

BEFORE Regal Manufacturing Company, and his wife, Mary. This Folk Victorian-style home features a cross-gable roof, diamond pane attic window, one-story wrap-around front porch with wood columns, a projecting bay window, double-hung one-over-one wood windows, and recessed diamond pane sidelights with the original front door and doorbell. Knox Heritage purchased the home through the City of Knoxville’s Homemaker Program. Knox Heritage has been renovating homes in historic neighborhoods since 1999. These

homes can be found all across town in the neighborhoods of Fourth & Gill, Old North, Edgewood Park, Fort Sanders, Parkridge, and Sequoyah Hills. Knox Heritage was able to complete the renovation thanks to a grant from the 1772 Foundation paired with a construction loan. Louisville Tile donated all of the kitchen and bath tile, SESCO Lighting donated new light fixtures, and Ferguson donated some of the plumbing items. Paint was provided by the National Trust through Benjamin Moore. High Oaks Construction was the general contractor. Even the Knox Heritage Salvage Shop volunteers chipped in to help with floor refinishing, painting, and general cleanup. This home will be sold to new property owners and protected by a preservation conservation easement to ensure the property is cared for and not demolished at some point in the future. For more information on Knox Heritage’s Vintage Properties Program, which manages these types of projects, visit www.knoxheritage.org.

Knox Heritage preserves, restores, and transforms historic places. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.

Dogs Are Making a Difference in Hospitals A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

F

OR PEDIATRIC patients,

being in the hospital can be a frightening, vulnerable, and lonely experience, especially for those undergoing serious medical treatments. However, research has shown that dogs, with their playful, comforting, and loving nature, can have beneficial, long-lasting effects on pediatric patients. According to Purdue University, interacting with animals in different environments, including hospitals, could improve our physical and mental health, as well as enhance aspects of our daily lives. Here are a few things to know about inresidence dogs and their positive impact on pediatric patients: 1. In-residence dogs are highly trained service dogs that work in healthcare settings and perform specialized tasks. They are also trained to create an emotional connection with pediatric patients, helping to provide them with joy, comfort, and other medical benefits. 2. Different from volunteer dogs that visit a hospital for a short time, in-residence dogs have a similar work schedule as their human counterparts, working closely with their handlers. They often have access to non-sterile clinics and inpatient units. 3. In-residence dogs can be an integral part of a child’s treatment team. They perform

56

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2019

a range of tasks that help medical teams achieve their clinical goals. In-residence dogs can be trained to do incredible things like keep kids calm during medical interventions, teach them how to take a pill, or model how to put on a hospital gown. 4. In-residence dogs can help lower a pediatric patient’s stress and anxiety by serving as a pleasant distraction. Hospital staff report that children who interact with in-residence dogs often require less medication. While in-residence dog programs have potential, they are relatively new. Out of more than 220 children’s hospitals in the U.S., only a few have in-residence dog programs. By implementing such programs, hospitals could give more pediatric patients the opportunity to experience the joy and health benefits that come with in-residence dogs. Dr. Jana Stockwell, a pediatric critical care physician at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, serves as a handler for an in-residence dog named Tidings. “Our Children’s dogs are full-time employees with a meaningful job to do, and on a daily basis, Tidings helps children be more engaged, encourages them to get out of bed, and even inspires them to tell us about a pet at home that they’re missing,” she said. “Our in-residence dogs never fail to lift the spirits of kids and adults alike.”

Foundation brings dogs to hospitals To fill this unmet need and further its mission to bring joy to kids battling illness or hunger, the Joy in Childhood Foundation, the independent charitable foundation of Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins, has launched “Dogs for Joy,” a program to bring in-residence dogs to children’s hospitals nationwide. Dogs in this program are bred and trained as service dogs but “work” full-time in children’s hospitals. Through more than $2 million in initial grants, the program will increase the number of in-residence dog programs in pediatric healthcare settings around the country and the prevalence of animal-assisted therapy as part of treatment. The Joy in Childhood Foundation invites children’s hospitals nationwide to apply for a Dogs for Joy grant if they’re interested in launching a new in-residence dog program or expanding an existing program. Funds awarded cover costs for launching and maintaining an in-residence dog program at a hospital, including adoption of the dog, training of select staff, dog food, dog grooming needs, dog toys, and more. Applicants can apply via www.joyinchildhoodfoundation. org/dogsforjoy until March 31, 2019.

WALTER TROUT

LUES AND ROCK have been

losing some of the foundational artists of the genre. Greats like B.B. King and Johnny Winter left us far too soon. However, we still have many blues greats touring and putting out great blues. One such artist is someone we’ve had the privilege of chatting with a couple of times before: Walter Trout. Trout has a new CD out entitled Survivor Blues and will be hitting the road in support of that album. It was about the disc that I called him up at his home. It had been four years since we last spoke, so I asked what has been happening since our last chat. “I’m doing great, man! I’m feelin’ great! I’m very, very – almost shocked to be still alive. I had the transplant four years ago, and this is the fourth record I’ll be putting out since the transplant. I just feel lucky and blessed and grateful, and it’s an all-new thing to be alive after what I went through.” Trout was in the area last year for an intimate show in Maryville that was put on by a local blues organization of sorts. I asked him why he doesn’t hit the region more often. “I don’t know,” he said. “I’m really busy playing all across the world, but I am getting back to Tennessee. I don’t know if it’s near you, but I’m playing in Pelham at The Caverns – in the cave there – I think maybe in April. I’m going to double-bill with Eric Gales. “Let me tell you a story. My high school girlfriend, who I was deeply in love with after she graduated from high school in South Jersey, went to Maryville College to study piano. In 1970, I used to hitchhike down there from South Jersey, and I used to stay with her in the girl’s dorm. They used to sneak me in, and I literally – literally – would climb the ivy and sneak in the window. So I have a lot 58

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE March 2019

of history in Maryville. I know it well. I spent a lot of time there with my girlfriend.” Turning to his new CD, I asked him for his “elevator speech” about it. “The short version is that all my life, I have thought there are all these amazing blues songs that have fallen by the wayside. When people decide they’re going to do albums of blues covers or they’re going to play covers when they’re playing love, they come out and do ‘I Got My Mojo Working’ or they do ‘Stormy Monday’ or they do ‘Caledonia’ or ‘Hey Hey The Blues Is Alright’ and ‘Missing With the Kid’ – all these songs that have been covered 853,000 times, you know? And I’m like ‘Wait a minute, here. There’s this vast catalog of these incredible songs that are just kind of forgotten.’” Trout recorded at the studio owned and operated by the Doors’ Robbie Krieger. He shared how and why that came about. “This is the first time I’ve worked with him,” he said. “The way that this happened is that my producer, Eric Corne – this is our 12th or 13th album together, we’re kind

of a team – he came and he said, ‘You know, Robbie Krieger’s got this studio. It’s kind of a private studio across town, but it’s awesome. Let’s go over and see it.’ We went over and the place is beautiful. “So we started recording there and Robbie, who loves blues – that’s his main love in life is the blues – was coming in and hanging out. He’d be listening to playbacks. He’d be having meals with us. We’d be playing back – listening to a playback. He’d be sitting on a couch, with an acoustic guitar, playing along. One day I said, ‘Hey man! Let’s do something together!’ He’s like, ‘Yeah! That’d be great!’” When I asked Trout if there is a track that he would point to as a calling card for the whole album, he shared: “The cut that I think is the ultimate statement on that album is the opener, ‘Me, My Guitar, and the Blues’ by Jimmy Dawkins. When I heard that, I was completely devastated. I thought to myself, ‘This song that this guy wrote – which has basically been forgotten and unheard – is as good a blues song as anyone has ever written. This is classic.' He basically took the entire genre of the blues and summed up the whole thing in two lines: ‘And now that you don’t love me, all I have left is me, my guitar, and the blues.’” Keep up with the latest about Walter Trout at www.WalterTrout.com. There is much more to this chat, and it can be read in its entirety at www.boomerocity.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity. com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music. Photos by Austin Hargrave

Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from March 1-29. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition.

A1LabArts: Connections in the Main Gallery A1LabArts’ inaugural juried exhibition, “Connections,” is a wideranging show presenting innovative work by 31 artists from Knoxville and beyond. Works explore the theme of “connections” in a broad variety of styles and media, including but not limited to painting, photographic Yvonne Dalschen processes, video, sculpture and assemblage, and more. A1LabArts, a long-established Knoxville nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting artistic innovation, organized the show by an open call to all artists. From numerous entries received, select works were juried for the show based on criteria, including originality, creativity, and social relevance. The juror is Katie Hargrave, professor at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Melanie Fetterolf: From Student to Educator in the Balcony Gallery

Melanie Fetterolf

“Color and nature, combined with my imagination, are my inspirations,” said Melanie Fetterolf. “I love to find the hidden colors within my subject matter and bring those to life. The juxtaposition of colors fascinates me! I tend to paint patterns of color using blending, layering, and texture. I have always enjoyed exploring the border between realism and abstraction in many different mediums. Sometimes I create images specifically to print on notecards, and I tend to think about how a finished work will look in card form. I love the creative process and experimenting with new mediums and techniques, which has resulted in my rain painting series, as well as creative art classes. I hope to inspire my students to also live their dreams creatively.”

Fetterolf is an active painter who enjoys working in a variety of mediums. She works in watercolor, acrylic, alcohol inks, pen and ink, recycled art, and some clay. Her most recent work is in acrylic and watercolor. She began to focus on painting while at college, and in 1993 graduated with a BFA with a Painting Concentration from Virginia Tech. Prints of her work may be found at Ijams Nature Center, Davis Studio, and the Appalachian Arts and Crafts Center. She participates in local farmers markets, various festivals, and Wilderness Wildlife Week in Pigeon Forge, and she exhibits regularly throughout the Knoxville area. Rick Roth: Illuminations in the Display Case “My work mainly consists of grinding texture onto metal and usually painting transparent color over it,” said Rick Roth. “This technique gives the finished piece both a holographic and iridescent effect. The piece seems to move as you move; colors brighten and soften on their own. I am often asked if I use glass or if the pieces are illuminated because they appear Rick Roth so bright.” Roth enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the early 1980s, ultimately reaching the rank of Corporal. After an honorable discharge, he and his wife moved to Washington State to raise their family. Roth stayed home with his children for 20 years, and when they left for college, he discovered the concept of abstract metal art. “I liked the way it moved and flowed and how vibrant the colors were,” he said. He worked toward creating the same idea but with his own twist. Roth tries to make his art move and change as if it were alive, responding to the viewer individually. “I always get more out of these pieces than the work I’ve put in,” he said. “That’s what I love about it. Making my art is both exciting and relaxing for me, and I hope it is for the viewers as well.” He and his wife moved to Tennessee eight years ago. The natural beauty of the area continues to inspire him. Richard Jansen: Trees and Other Beautiful Things on the North Wall There are approxim a t e l y 1 0 0,0 0 0 species of trees in the world. It is estimated by NASA from satellite pictures of the Richard Jansen earth that there are approximately three trillion trees on the earth, which equates to approximately 400 trees for every human. Trees are often taken for granted and overlooked for their beauty and grandeur. In all their varieties and leafy splendor, trees provide us with a variety of color and designs. It is Richard

Jansen’s intent to share some of the magnificent trees he has had the opportunity to photograph during his lifetime. Born and raised in Kansas, Jansen has resided in Knoxville for the past 21 years. He is a graduate of the University of Washington, Seattle, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree and the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he earned his Master of Arts. He is married with five grown children and nine grandchildren. Jansen joined the Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1998. He initially left the Army after Vietnam, where he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, and Air Medals as a squad leader in the 9th and 25th Infantry Division. He left the military after returning home in 1970, returned to college, and later rejoined the Army as a First Lieutenant in the Army Medical Specialist Corps. His intent was to help wounded veterans from Vietnam and other military conflicts. He won multiple photography awards while in the Army to include All Army and All Interservice awards. Jansen has photographed since 1970 after returning from Vietnam. His love for photography helps him bury the scars from that conflict. He is also a published photographer with publications in multiple magazines, calendars, and Hallmark cards. Yvonne Hosey: Glasslike Surfaces 2.0 in the Atrium Yvonne Hosey is an artist who works in several mediums: Glasspaint, acrylic, watercolor, and scratchboard. She is inspired by her travels and blogs about them. This is her third exhibition at the Emporium, with the inaugural Glasslike Surfaces debuting in August 2016. Yvonne Hosey She continues to explore glasspaint as a medium, as well as portraiture using friends and people seen on the subway during a fall trip to New York City. Like most artists, Hosey’s journey has been a winding one. Discouraged as a young woman from pursuing a career in art, Hosey opted instead for a career in nursing. Marriage and family followed. The creativity refused to stay buried as she became an avid cook, decorator, and collector. Her travels always included trips to art museums and exhibitions. When her son started high school, they moved to a house with a sunny back porch. “One day I discovered a pack of old oil pastels, bought a few sheets of paper, and commandeered the porch,” said Hosey. “I haven’t looked back since.” The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. TLANTA ISN’T JUST another

big city – it’s an urban landscape made up of nearly 45 in-town neighborhoods. Each locale brings a unique flavor to the community and adds personality to the city. Visitors can easily transition from one neighborhood to the next, all while experiencing Atlanta’s culture. The heart of the city is downtown. Home to a walkable convention and entertainment district with hotels, a multitude of dining options, and world-class attractions, it’s the perfect starting point for first-time visitors. Centennial Olympic Park is surrounded by Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, CNN global headquarters, Children’s Museum of Atlanta, The National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame – all within steps of each other. Downtown is a gateway to any visit and is an ideal place to begin exploring the city. Midtown is known as Atlanta’s “heart of the arts” and sits along the famed Peachtree Street. Midtown boasts the largest concentration of arts facilities and organizations in the Southeast. Visitors can work their way through Atlanta’s cultural history, beginning with the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum at the intersection of 10th and Peachtree, making a stop at the fabulous Fox Theatre and ending at The Woodruff Arts Center, home to High Museum of Art, Alliance Theatre, and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. For a breath of fresh air, visitors can head to Piedmont Park – one of the largest greenspaces in the city. North of Midtown is the ultra-chic neighborhood of Buckhead. Known as the 62

“Beverly Hills of the East,” Buckhead is a shopping haven for fashionistas across the South. Find the latest styles from high-end designers at The Shops Buckhead Atlanta, Lenox Square, and Phipps Plaza. However, Buckhead isn’t just for fashionistas. There are award-winning dining options throughout the neighborhood, from several chef Ford Fry outposts – King +Duke and St. Cecelia – to high-end classics like Restaurant Eugene and Chops Lobster Bar. On the Westside, a blending of Georgia Tech’s college campus culture with nearby loft communities creates a new district within old industrial spaces. The dining scene thrives at Westside Provisions District. Staple eateries including Little Star Provisions and JCT. Kitchen & Bar anchor the district as new, lively concepts like Little Trouble and Cooks & Soldiers make their mark. Nearby The Optimist, Miller Union, and Antico Pizza Napoletana create a collective of eateries catering to the city’s sophisticated

palate. Visitors wanting to eat, shop, and play should look no further than Atlantic Station. Centered on 17th Street, Atlantic Station has well-known retail brands mixed with casual dining to make a shopping day just a little different. Throughout the year, Atlantic Station hosts several special events, including BB&T Atlanta Open and Cirque Du Soleil. Neighborhoods on Atlanta’s Eastside are connected by the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail, a multi-use trail and greenspace that runs three miles from Piedmont Park to Reynoldstown. Along the Eastside Trail are two of the neighborhood’s newest developments, Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market. Locals and visitors alike will find chef-driven concepts alongside curated retail options. Bordering the BeltLine, the Eastside has more than seven distinct neighborhoods. Locals stop for a pastry at Alon’s in Virginia-Highland, one of the city’s original streetcar suburbs. Inman Park combines small urban green spaces

with winding boulevards lined with colorful Queen Anne and Victorian homes in the city’s first planned suburb. The scene edges into a Bohemian style in Little Five Points, where vintage dress matches the creativity of tattoos. Spend an evening in East Atlanta Village, home to a few of the city’s most-talked-about live music venues, like The EARL. What’s old is new again in Old Fourth Ward, where this neighborhood continues to redefine itself, transforming into a hotspot for nightlife along Edgewood Avenue. Grant Park surrounds the city’s fourth-largest park and is home to Historic Oakland Cemetery and Zoo Atlanta. Once an epicenter of AfricanAmerican commerce, Sweet Auburn Historic District continues to flourish on the city’s southeast side. Auburn Avenue, known in the 1950s as the nation’s most affluent AfricanAmerican street, houses the Sweet Auburn Curb Market, bakeries, and clubs near the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park and Ebenezer Baptist Church.

The Cultural Capital of the South

Atlanta’s arts and culture scene is one of the most vibrant in the U.S. The Woodruff Arts Center, the country’s third-largest arts campus – comprised of High Museum of Art, Alliance Theater, and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra – draws more than one million visitors annually. Atlanta’s arts scene spreads well beyond the city’s world-class venues as a new wave of visual art installations and street murals have rolled in, adorning parks, walls, tunnels, and walkways with color and jumpstarting Atlanta’s independent artist’s scene. “Many Advisers Bring Success” B Y TO M I R M E N

THIS ANCIENT PROVERB

goes on to state that “plans go wrong for lack of advice.” It has been two decades or more since the popular Marlboro man commercials were barred from television. The iconic Marlboro man portrayed in these commercials was a rugged individualist whose independence was viewed as courageous by many. However, in the years since, this same independence is now perceived by some as a major character flaw; an individual who placed his reliance on his own independence rather than on the advice and recommendations of trusted friends and mentors. As an entrepreneur, it is customary that the final decision on issues comes down to your choice. But it can be a huge mistake to make your decisions in the absence of the recommendations and advice of a few trusted advisers. I’m always surprised by the number of small

Seeking the advice of knowledgeable advisers on important decisions is not only critical to your success in making important decisions, but it can also avert the consequences of poor choices. business owners that elect to go it alone, much like the Marlboro man. Some entrepreneurs prefer the freedom of independent decision making instead of relying in part on the advice of others. But unless you possess the wisdom of Solomon, this type of decision making

seems ill advised. Seeking the advice of knowledgeable advisers on important decisions is not only critical to your success in making important decisions, but it can also avert the consequences of poor choices. Confiding in others is not always an easy thing for freeminded entrepreneurs to do, because it requires the courage necessary to place your trust in the wisdom of others. Little courage is required to act alone. But caution must also be exercised not to overthink your decision, waiting for the stars to align. I’ve often observed small business owners who seek out endless advice in order to avoid the fear that can result from making an important decision. Courage is the trademark of the successful entrepreneur, but the entrepreneurs that exhibit the greatest courage are those who are fearless in seeking the advice of trusted counselors and mentors.

4 Ways Female Founders Turbocharge Their Businesses A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

businesses at a record pace – motivated to pursue passions, financial independence, and the flexibility that eludes most traditional jobs. In the U.S. alone, women entrepreneurs generate $1.1 million in revenue on average across retail, professional, and personal service businesses that have operated for 11 years. This stat comes from Visa’s new “State of Female Entrepreneurship” report, which informed their recently announced program, She’s Next, Empowered by Visa, a global initiative to support and champion women in their efforts to grow their small businesses. That’s powerful stuff, highlighting the important role women entrepreneurs play in the prosperity and economic development of local communities. The typical entrepreneur is 42 years old and earns nearly $110,000 in household income a year, making a profound difference in building and supporting families in the community. Clearly female founders are coming into their own. In fact, the Visa study found that 79% of American women entrepreneurs feel

more empowered now than they did five years ago. Still, key challenges exist: 73% say funding does not come easily, and nearly two-thirds use their own funds to get started. Assembling a good team, finding the right tools, and dealing with competitors are among the biggest challenges keeping women entrepreneurs up at night. For any entrepreneur, it can feel like there’s never enough time or resources to grow a business. To help other entrepreneurs and based on insights from the “State of Female Entrepreneurship” report, Visa polled four areas women entrepreneurs focus on to turbocharge success: » Find mentors: More than two-thirds said they wanted advice from fellow entrepreneurs. Relatable role models and mentors are invaluable when you’re making the leap to starting or building your own business. » Find your feet: Strategy development is critical for women starting up their own company. Assembling a good team was a challenge encountered by 37% of women founders.

Other challenges include finding the tools to grow and manage their business (36%), competition (36%), and growing as quickly as they need to (33%). Have a plan and pursue your vision. » Gather capital to invest in your business: Cash flow is the lifeblood of any business. Respondents cited profits and revenue growth as the top two priorities for improvement. Thirty-two percent of women would direct additional funding toward newer technology. » Put in overtime: When building a business, time is precious. Given the investment and high stakes that come with the territory, it comes as little surprise that a majority of women entrepreneurs (56%) are putting in more work hours than before they started their business. If you’ve joined the ranks of female entrepreneurs, find support and resources by signing up for the Female Founder Collective, and visit She’s Next, Empowered by Visa, where you can download and print a toolkit with tips and advice to help build and sustain your company.

Botox Myths Debunked Six Reasons You Shouldn’t Be Afraid of the World’s Bestselling Wrinkle Eraser

B

OTOX is one of the most popu-

lar cosmetic treatments available. However, there are still a few misconceptions about what it does and doesn’t do and who the best candidates are for the treatment. Here are six myths debunked. MYTH: Botox freezes your face. Some people think that Botox will prevent you from making facial expressions and freezes your face into one position. If done correctly, this is not true. Botox works by blocking signals from your nerves to the muscles, preventing contractions and smoothing out lines. As a trained, board certified dermatologist, Dr. Doppelt can administer Botox that allows wrinkles to soften and relax but still allows you to express a full range of emotions - happiness, surprise, joy, and even anger. MYTH: Botox injections are poison and unsafe. Doctors have been using Botox for a variety of medical and aesthetic reasons for close to two decades. In 2017 alone, nearly 7.23 million Botox injections were performed according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, suggesting that this treatment is popular, effective, and safe. When administered correctly, no significant longterm side effects have been reported, even after more than 10 years of regular use. MYTH: Botox is just for wrinkles. In addition to its cosmetic use, Botox is used as a medical treatment for hundreds

of medical conditions, including arthritis, hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating, migraines, TMJ, involuntary movements, and tremors, to name a few. Treating these medical conditions often requires much higher doses of Botox than are used for cosmetic conditions. There’s no denying the therapeutic qualities of this versatile treatment. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that aesthetic-related Botox use has risen 700% since 2000, indicating that the treatment is an accessible anti-wrinkle solution for a growing number of people from all walks of life. MYTH: If you stop getting Botox, it will make your wrinkles worse. Botox injections typically last three to four months. That means that over time, the relaxed muscles will begin to contract again, returning your facial muscles to their previous positions. Though regular injections will maintain the treatment effects, you can stop receiving Botox at any time without any damage or making wrinkles worse. MYTH: Botox is only for women. More and more men are coming into the office to have Botox treatments. Botox can help to soften a man’s look to give a natural, more youthful appearance. As the business marketplace becomes more competitive, men are looking for something to give them a competitive edge. MYTH: The best time for Botox is when the lines appear.

Matthew B. Doppelt D.O., F.A.O.C.D., F.A.A.D. Board Certified Dermatologist

Not so. Lines and wrinkles are formed by repetitive muscle movements like raising the eyebrows, squinting, and scowling. If you wait until the lines and wrinkles are etched into your skin, it can be more difficult to smooth their appearance. Dr. Doppelt often compares the etched-in lines on the skin to the visible creases that remain in paper after it has been unfolded. By inhibiting muscle contraction, it prevents the folding that causes the lines to appear. Don’t worry if the etched-in lines have already appeared. With continued use of Botox, over time the body will do a good job of repairing them. Also, with repeated Botox injections, the treated muscles will become smaller from disuse. As this happens, patients may find they need less Botox or that the effects seem to last longer. To learn more, give us a call at 865-4748800 or visit www.drdoppelt.com.
