Nurturing and nourishing a family go handin-hand. If you’re ready to rally your family around better nutrition, now’s the time to get a healthy jump on the new year.
from the publisher’s desk Al Asghar It’s hard to believe that it’s already 2017! 2016 went by very quickly! We saw a lot of different things this last year. The passing away of some of our favorite musical and theatrical talent as well as great athletes are just an example of what happend this last year. If you are looking for some positivity, here is somethings you can look forward to. Next summer, a total solar eclipse will darken Southern cities for a few minutes. Drones are going to be big, they’ll be everywhere! 2017 could be the year that vitural reality can fufill what was promised in the 1990s. 2017 is also promising bottle of milk that were made without cows by the end of the year. And as far as Hollywood, there is going to be sequels, sequels, and more sequels! 2017 sounds to be fun and exciting! 2016 was a great year for us too! We launched our app that helps us communicate and celebrate our community. Also, our monthly newsletter has brought local news to many new people. And keep an eye out for our new website, which will be launched in January 2017. I want to thank all the readers and sponsors of the magazine, you are what makes us better.

Has Your Tattoo Expired?
(BPT) - According to a recent survey, nine out of 10 people with a tattoo have considered removing it at one time or another. While the reasons for removal vary, the increasing options available for tattoo removal are transforming the nature of tattoos from symbols of permanence to designs with a sell-by date. In a day and age when tattoos are more and more socially acceptable, even considered works of art, why are so many considering removal? Syneron Candela, the makers of PicoWay, a leading laser treatment that removes tattoos with less pain and fewer treatments, commissioned the survey which took a closer look at the motivations behind tattoo removal. They want more! The decision to remove a tattoo doesn’t necessarily reflect a change of heart about having a tattoo. In fact, 83 percent of people who have removed a tattoo said they are considering getting a new one, sometimes in the very same place where they just had one removed, while only 8 percent said they would never get another tattoo. Additionally, the majority of tattoo removers were not swayed to remove their design for professional reasons, contrary to popular belief. Only 16 percent of tattoo removers attributed their
decision to their professional lives and workplace environment, while an additional 5 percent of those contemplating removal saw their career goals as a deciding factor. Both tattoo removers (18 percent) and people with tattoos considering removal (29 percent) said a faded tattoo was the main reason to contemplate or complete tattoo removal procedures. So turns out, many just want a better tattoo! It’s only temporary. Compared to previous generations, today’s youth see tattoos as less permanent based on the availability and advancements seen in the removal processes, like the PicoWay laser, which shatters the ink into small particles to clear the tattoo faster than other devices. In fact, the majority of people who removed a tattoo received their first tattoo at a young age. While the average age of survey respondents got their first tattoo before they were 35, 61 percent of removers were between the ages of 18 and 24, compared to only 9 percent between the ages of 35 and 49. Women made up 62 percent of removers who got their first tattoo before age 25. With increased access to tattoo removal devices like PicoWay, people with tattoos can conveniently remove their design if they grow tired of it over time. And, nine out of 10 tattoo removers noted that they enjoyed having the option to remove their tattoo. A pain in the butt, neck, arm, chest and back. While tattoo removal has increased over recent years, the decision to remove a tattoo takes time. In fact, 76 percent of tattoo removers waited over a year before beginning the tattoo removal process. Although a variety of reasons contribute to a person’s decision to remove a tattoo, pain and cost are two of the biggest factors that delay the tattoo removal process. The survey also found that 58 percent of people considering tattoo removal said cost was one of the main barriers they faced when considering treatment, while 45 percent of people regarded pain as their biggest hesitation. After removing a tattoo, however, seven out of eight people said their perception of the removal process was that it would be more painful than what they actually experienced. everythinglake.com 7
A Town In Lake County That Might Be The Most Unique Town In Florida Mount Dora is a city with about 12,500 people, locarted in Lake County Florida. Founded in 1880, this quaint town is home to many festivals and is often called the “Festival City.” There is always something to do no matter what time of year you visit. The town of Mount Dora began in 1874 when the area was settled by David Simpson, his wife, and two children. In 1880, Ross C. Tremain became the town’s first postmaster. A post office called Mount Dora has been in operation since 1883 At the time, the town was called Royellou, named for Tremain’s three children. The community was later named for Dora Ann Drawdy, who was an early settler of the town in the mid-1880s. In 1846, the surveyors named Lake Dora after her, and in 1883 the town was renamed after the lake. The Mount in Mount Dora reflects the fact that the town is on a plateau 184 feet above sea level. In addition to this, Dora is memorialized through Dora Drawdy Way, an 8 everythinglake.com
alleyway located in the downtown area. The town became a popular winter retreat for hunters, fishermen, and boaters, and in 1883 the Alexander House, a two-story hotel, was opened. The Alexander House has been renamed several times and was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. A railroad came to town in 1887, followed by an orange packing house, fertilizer factories factories, and a cannery were established as well. The town was granted a charter in 1910 with John Philip Donnelly as its first mayor; the town had 371 residents at the time. In the 1920s, Mount Dora began to grow significantly, both in residential development and business development. Mount Dora began investing in public infrastructure, including streetlights, a water system, curbs, and paved roads. The first two public parks were created and the Mount Dora Community Building was built largely from funds raised by Mount Dora residents. The building has since served as the
city’s performance and meeting venue. With the fear of the Cold War on the mind’s of some of Mount Dora’s residents, they decided to construct a fallout shelter. With contributions from twenty-five families, the underground shelter known as “The Catacombs” was built. It could support 100 people for six months and contained a conditioner and dehumidifier, as well as food and supplies. The catacombs remain today, but the location is a secret.

4 Creative Ways To Tackle Rising Health Care Costs When Planning For Retirement (BPT) - No matter how hard you worked or how much you saved, the sad reality of today’s economic landscape is that the rising cost of health care can quickly eat away at your retirement fund. Health care expenses have inflated to the point that the average American couple over the age of 65 will pay $240,000 in medical bills, according to AARP. When paired with the sobering statistic that roughly a third of Americans over 65 rely entirely on Social Security for their retirement income, these findings underline an urgent problem that needs to be addressed. Rather than wait for Washington or the health 12 everythinglake.com
care industry to come up with a solution, many are taking a proactive approach and tackling the problem head on. Often, they succeed through some surprising and unconventional strategies. Make sure to always talk to your trusted financial advisor or other professionals before taking any action, but here are four creative ways you can tackle rising health care costs in your retirement years. Maximize your social security benefits. It might be tempting to start claiming your benefits as soon as you’re eligible, but if you can, wait. The longer you wait, the more you and your spouse will be paid. Especially if you’re currently healthy, try to defer your benefits until you’re 70. If you do, your payments will increase by as much as 75 percent. This will put you in a good position to meet any unexpected costs in the future.
Sell your life insurance. Just like stocks and bonds, a life insurance policy is an investment. Periodically, you should review your policy to see whether or not it’s still needed. If your medical bills have gotten too high or you can no longer afford to pay the premiums, consider selling your life insurance policy through a life settlement. Essentially, you sell your policy to an investor who usually pays seven to eight times as much as the cash value of the policy. For many, this can be a quick way to relieve financial strain and deal with health care bills. Consider a reverse mortgage. This is a loan available to homeowners that allows them to convert part of the equity in their homes into cash. The loan is called a “reverse mortgage” because instead of making monthly payments to a lender, as with a traditional mortgage, the lender makes payments to the borrower. The borrower is not required to pay back the loan until the home is sold or otherwise vacated. Buy long term care insurance early. The costs of living in a nursing home or hiring a home caretaker can be staggering. Long term health insurance can be cost prohibitive, and for many healthy individuals, it’s hard to imagine a time when they will be in a situation when they will need full or assisted care. This can make it hard
for them to justify paying the premiums. But if you start during your early to mid50s, you can buy in at a lower rate and defray the expenses that you might not be able to afford. Of all these, many people don’t realize that selling their life insurance is a viable option. In fact, 90 percent of seniors who allowed their policies to lapse without knowing that selling their life insurance was an option, would have considered selling if someone had told them about it. 4 Ways You Can Help your Cat With Asthma (BPT) - Humans aren’t the only ones that can suffer from asthma. As one of the most common respiratory diseases in cats, asthma affects about 1 percent of the domesticated feline population in the U.S. Cats between the ages of 2 and 8 are most likely to develop the disease. Described as a constriction of the airways, asthma occurs when the immune system overreacts to an allergen, resulting in inflammation. Feline asthma is not contagious. While it has been hypothesized that genetics may play an underlying role, research in this area is still ongoing. The professional consensus is that if a cat has asthma, symptoms can be triggered by a host of environmental factors. “While the exact cause of feline asthma remains unknown, the prevailing thought in veterinary medicine is that the symptoms of asthma are triggered by an allergic response to inhaled airborne particles,” says Dr. Kurt Venator, Purina veterinarian and director of Veterinary Strategy and Programs. “It can be a challenging condition to manage, as asthmatic cats can react to so many potential irritants in the environment.” Classic signs of asthma include difficulty breathing, coughing and wheezing, along with many other signs. While it’s not curable, there are simple steps responsible pet owners can take today to help their feline companions breathe easier. Journal: If your cat does have asthma, it can be challenging to discover what is triggering the symptoms. In order to find out, owners will likely have to make changes in their home. Keep a journal and begin eliminating possible irritants. Evaluate and note any changes you see in your cat. This can be a slow process, but it’s vital in order to understand the cause of their symptoms. Remember, the signs of feline asthma can be exacerbated by a myriad of potential irritants in the environment.
Minimize potential irritants: Cat owners are encouraged to avoid any potential environmental irritants such as mold, pollen, cigarette smoke, perfume, dust, etc. Clean your house more frequently, vacuum and change air filters to help keep the air clean. Try to be mindful of household cleaning agents, as some scented cleaners and air fresheners may serve as irritants. Avoid clay-based litters: Because of airborne dust, veterinarians typically do not recommend clay-based litter for cats with respiratory issues. In those cases, alternative litters such as Purina Yesterday’s News or the Tidy Cats Breeze system may be best. Get everyone on board: It’s important that everyone in the household is aware of your cat’s condition and takes part in their health. Family members should be more cautious and responsible when inviting people into their homes. Something as simple as a different perfume odor or tracking in mud or dust may cause your cat to have an asthma attack. For more information, talk to your veterinarian to determine if your cat suffers from feline asthma and how you can help. everythinglake.com 17
Good Eats 5 Clever Hacks To Simplify Any Family’s Morning Routine (BPT) - Getting the family out the door on time every morning is no small feat. Seemingly simple tasks like getting dressed, packing backpacks and making breakfast can quickly turn into chaos. Before you know it, you’re running late and the kids haven’t even eaten as you dash to the car. Stop dreading the stressful start to the day and start taking control of your mornings. A few simple tips and tricks will turn the morning craze into smooth sailing. Plus, when you have a stressfree start, the rest of the day just seems to go better. Select a week’s worth of clothes Sunday night. Instead of choosing outfits the night prior, supersize your time-saving efforts by doing this task just once on Sunday night. Involve kids in selecting their clothes for the week so they feel empowered in their choices. Then hang entire outfits in the closet or stack in one drawer dedicated to weekday wear. When mornings come, kids know exactly where to find the day’s duds. Bonus: you don’t have to worry about midweek laundry. Create a routine and set alarms. Create a morning routine and stick to it. For example, kids wake at 7 a.m., eat breakfast at 7:15 a.m., get dressed and ready at 7:30 a.m., then out the door by 8 a.m. And if the kids need to share a bathroom, set a daily bathroom schedule with alarms to keep kids on track and avoid arguments in the morning. Get ready before waking up the kids. Trying to ready yourself for the day while helping the kids is a recipe for disaster. This is why waking before the rest of the family really makes 18 everythinglake.com
mornings happier. Try getting up 30 minutes before the kids so you have time to get ready and enjoy a cup of coffee. You’ll be fully awake, much happier and can focus on helping the kids stay on-task. Create morning rules. Just like you don’t let kids eat dessert before dinner to ensure they eat well, set rules for the morning to keep things moving. For example, no TV until all morning tasks are completed. For teens, smartphones and other mobile devices must remain on the kitchen table until they are ready to go. Sundays = meal prep. Make a week’s worth of PB&Js on Sunday and put them in the freezer. This way lunch items are ready to go and the sandwiches will be thawed and ready to eat by lunchtime. For breakfast, make it easy for kids by setting out shelf-stable items they can make themselves. New Jif(R) Peanut Butter and Naturally Flavored Cinnamon Spread keeps mornings interesting. Set out a jar by a loaf of bread and kids can

Tips To Make Good Nutrition A Family Affair In 2017 (BPT) - Nurturing and nourishing a family go hand-in-hand. If you’re ready to rally your family around better nutrition, now’s the time to get a healthy jump on the new year. “Making consistently good food choices can set your family on the road to good health,” says Marlene Schmidt, registered dietitian for Nestlé’s Nutrition, Health and Wellness Center of Excellence. “Besides helping you stay healthy, a nutritious diet can support growth, strengthen immune systems and boost energy levels.” Make good nutrition a family affair: Resolve to make healthy changes together. These tips will 20 everythinglake.com
start every member of the family on a new course of good nutrition in 2017. Infant and toddler foods A lifetime of wellness begins with good eating habits during pregnancy and nutritious choices for your baby. Breast milk is the ideal food for infants. Experts recommend exclusive breastfeeding for your baby’s first six months, followed by continued breastfeeding for as long as possible after introduction of first foods. Your pediatrician can help determine when your baby is ready to try solid foods. Feeding iron-fortified infant cereal is a great way to help meet your baby’s iron needs. Add fruits and veggies one at a time, and ensure foods are the right size and texture to match your baby’s development, starting with pureed
foods and working your way to small, soft bits. Offering a variety of nutritious foods will help your baby experience different tastes and flavors. Get kids in the kitchen If you’re a parent, you’re being watched, so make sure your child sees you eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains - and fewer sugary, fatty or salty foods. Plan to eat meals together. Shared mealtime is a great chance to reconnect as a family, and to engage your children in fun explorations of what it means to be healthy. Invite kids to help you grocery shop, plan meals and cook. They’ll learn important lifelong skills. One study found that children who help prepare meals eat more vegetables than those who don’t participate. Can’t get kids to try new foods? Don’t give up. Research shows young children may need to try a new veggie up to 10 times before they learn to like it. Stock up for teens Good nutrition is crucial during the teen years, but it can be a challenge. Teenagers are developing their own food preferences. Make healthy eating easy for them. Stock up on simple, appealing foods - from cut-up fruits and veggies to smoothies, whole grain wraps, soups and sandwiches. For a satisfying and teen-approved beverage that provides a protein punch, opt for chocolate milk, which offers nine essential nutrients, including vitamin D, calcium and potassium. While their nutritional needs are increasing, teenagers are facing new emotional challenges that can cause them to overeat, skip meals or diet. Watch for unhealthy eating patterns and be sensitive to body-image concerns.
Grow up, not out By middle age, our metabolism begins to slow. We need fewer calories, but it’s hard to break old habits. That’s where mindful eating can help. Set the table, turn off your devices and savor every bite. You’ll feel more satisfied after meals and be less tempted to snack. Moderate your alcohol intake, and don’t forget your water bottle. And if your serving sizes have expanded over the years, now’s the time to seek some portion pointers, too. When older, make wiser food choices Whether from changing tastes, dental problems, medication or illness, people often lose their appetites as they grow older. But good nutrition remains essential for older adults. And it’s never too late to make positive changes. If you or an older family member can’t shop often enough to buy fresh produce, order your groceries online, or buy frozen and canned fruits and vegetables. Read labels to avoid extra sugar or sodium, and remember to drink plenty of water. If weight loss becomes a problem, consider a liquid supplement or meal replacement beverage for a tasty way to fill nutrient, calorie and protein gaps. everythinglake.com 21

A Digital Safe Vault To Protect Your Information (BPT) - Whether you’re paying for a meal, signing up to play a game on your smartphone or withdrawing money from your bank, your information is at risk. In 2016 alone, 873 data breaches exposed more than 29.8 million records containing potentially sensitive information, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center. Clearly, stronger measures must be taken. While more people are turning to digital solutions to store important information, the threat of cyber security remains a concern for many businesses, governments and individuals. The modern reality when it comes to safely protecting valuables, documents and digital
assets, is that both physical and digital secure storage solutions are needed. Security in a changing world In The Wall Street Journal, Sue Shellenbarger says people need a way to securely store both digital and physical copies of important documents. They should “wrap the documents in plastic and store them in a safe or safe-deposit box. Other paper items to keep in both paper and digital form include wills, diplomas, deeds, titles, licenses and trust and retirement-plan documents.” Jerry Pluard of Safe Deposit Box Insurance Coverage (SDBIC) agrees, and recommends using a combination of physical and “digital” safe deposit boxes to protect valuables and digital identity. “A digital safe deposit box can be used to maintain an inventory and store images of the valuable items in your physical box. You can also specify in your digital box the
location of physical box and where the keys can be found, Pluard says. Digital vaults for consumers While highly secured digital safe deposit boxes have been used by consumers and banking institutions in Europe for several years, the technology has not been embraced to the same degree in the United States. With the digital vault options now available, American consumers need to be educated on what features are essential to ensuring their security. The top features are: 1. Password manager: Keeping passwords in a highly secure location might be the feature you access the most in your digital safe deposit box. Look for a password generator and the ability to link directly to the login screen to copy and paste the password in. Also, make sure you can access the password vault even when offline. 2. Encrypted email: Your digital box should have an encrypted email so you can send and receive sensitive documents. 3. Accessibly: Your digital box should have an easy to use mobile app, allowing you to access your passwords, documents and to download and receive encrypted information form a number of devices. 4. Digital inheritance: You should be able to designate several loved ones as beneficiaries who will have access to your digital files and documents in case of a life-changing event. 5. Security: Zero Knowledge technology is a must. This means only you and those you authorize can access your box. Also, you want something known as double encryption. This assures you that even if there is a breach, the hacker cannot access documents or data.
An Integrated Solution Recently, SDBIC formed a partnership with DSwiss AG to bring such a digital vault solution to the US. In addition to providing people with the needed features mentioned above, all the data is stored in a military command bunker in the Swiss mountains.
