In the last 15 years we have travelled to more than 40 countries. With our mountain bikes or snowboards, in search of the best trails and the most stunning powder runs – for magazines and photo shoots, with professional photographers.

After an avalanche accident while shooting a snowboard video in 1999, former freeride pro Holger Feist came up with the idea of a backpack with integrated back protector. The incident did not involve burial and did not have serious consequences. Holger did, however, injure his back as a result of the avalanche shovel in his backpack when he crashed in a couloir. The concept of a back protector also seemed to make sense for mountain biking, particularly as the ergonomics of the bike packs at the time left much to be desired. “Like a football on your back!” is how Holger summarised it in 2000 after a three-week bike expedition through Tibet, to Mount Everest Base Camp. So we started to tinker, sew and experiment, until the first functioning backpack prototype was finally initiated in 2003, on the trails of La Paz. But an entirely different problem emerged in Bolivia, one for which a sensible solution was not yet available on the market: the bike that had been carefully packed in a box, came off the baggage carousel at La Paz airport in tattered packaging

and in all its individual parts. Fortunately everything was still there, but this was obviously a reason for developing a sophisticated bike travel bag, as well. Right from the start, the focus was on maximum functionality and quality so as to ensure that worrying about gear was going to be a thing of the past once and for all.

comfort and safety. We still travel as much as possible all over the world with our sports equipment – and, meanwhile, more and more frequently also with our business luggage. We test all our products ourselves and invest a lot of time and energy in further perfecting everything – down to the smallest detail.

Both products were initially produced only for our own travels and for friends who requested them. Until one day, we had a phone call from a friend and long-term travel companion, Bernd Stucke from Hong Kong. He had taken his bike for a service at the legendary “Flying Ball” bike shop in one of the very first bike bags. Bike mastermind and shop owner Mr Lee was so impressed by this bike travel bag that he immediately ordered 50 bags. And that was to be our first “real” customer.

Every product reflects our passion for our sport and our passion for what we do. As a result, EVOC products are always a little more than simply pieces of equipment. EVOC stands for evolution and the concept of high-quality, sporting backpacks, bags and luggage – with a special focus on protection. Protect the things you love! So in 2008 we founded the EVOC brand. Since then a great deal – and yet only very little – has changed for us. We continue to rely on quality and functionality without compromise, while setting trends in design,

New countries, new people, new mountain ranges – and a lot of new „best“ trails. Bike travelling is in our DNA like exploring and the passion for adventures. This is what made us manufacture all of the nice EVOC products originally: Quality made gear that is always a bit more than simply pieces of equipment. For 2018 we´ve proudly developed an EVOC collection that is exactly this and 100% dedicated to adventure and new bike travel frontiers at the same time. Now, is that good or bad? The clouds have meanwhile become so thick that I can no longer see how far the drop right next to me is. Well, it’s definitely deep enough not to hear the rock I’ve just dislodged hitting the ground at the bottom. The trail which has been carved into the rock face is just about wide enough for me and my bike, and thank goodness for the steel rope that seems to be firmly anchored in the rock, but which disappears further ahead in the thick fog. I clearly remember Harald saying that you can only experience the actual “flow” when you push the threshold of your personal comfort zone. And my shaky knees are proof enough that I’m clearly pushing my limits right now. But it has precious little in common with comfort, and I would not call it flow either – trying to layaway along the steel rope with my bike in my hand, focussing only on not falling into the deep abyss.

It seems like fierce battles were due to have taken place up here in World War 2, because the wide network of access and supply routes, storage depots and fortifications have been impressively integrated into the mountains. Fortunately, this region was then spared the war though, so that most of the trails are still in fairly good condition and “actually” perfect for biking. “Actually” means two things: First of all, the trails are rather remote so you can only reach them by pedalling hard and long. Secondly, parts of the trails are so technically demanding and exposed that you really have to think carefully about what it is you’re doing up here. But then again, the reward is a one-of-a-kind bike adventure: spectacular landscapes and rock formations like you would never expect in Europe, with breathtaking views into unexplored valleys and canyons, often against the backdrop of the sea. >>

Plus, the sun breaking through the fast-moving, constantly changing cloud banks, resulting in a spectacle of nature that lets the sensational mountain scenery appear even more dramatic. There is no-one on these secluded rocky trails except for a few scattered hikers – and as time passes we actually get to feel the real bike flow. The rugged, exposed challenging sections along the route become a bit more easy-going and the jagged, rustic trail formations more gentle. While we had to re-position the back wheel for each and every turn further up, we can now circle around the corners more dynamically. We can also ride faster now. Gradually we even dare loosen the brakes a bit and let the bikes run. We fly through the Ligurian landscape, which changes character depending on the altitude you’re at. The best from around the world, all on a single trail! Then it’s time for a break– after all, we’ve been on the go since early morning. But a cosy meal in a quaint mountain hut is not going to happen in this part of the world, which is why we are carrying everything we need in our backpacks. In addition to the rest of the equipment, we could easily fit our expedition food, a cooker, pot, a few bowls and cutlery into the new EXPLORER PRO. So we find a spot on a crag to have our lunch. LITESHIELD SYSTEM The core component of the protector backpack system is the extra-wide, ergonomically shaped neoprene hip belt with Velcro fastening and a large heavy-duty buckle. This system transfers the main load onto the hips, namely right to the body’s centre of gravity.

At the same time, the ergonomically cut shoulder straps keep the backpack comfortably in the predefined position to guarantee perfect back protection. Mesh elements, EVA foam with ventilation holes and a large, central ventilation channel ensure good air circulation.

LITESHIELD SYSTEM AIR This system combines the essential back proximity for a back protector with maximum back ventilation. The back area is close fitting and features a large, central ventilation channel as well as two rows of “ventilation grids”: air mesh-covered EVA foam strips with ventilation holes and a special gabled groove reduce the

contact surface on the back, which improves air circulation. The extra-wide, ergonomically shaped hip belt is made from our AIRO FLEX material. In this way, the main load – even in the case of a fully loaded backpack – is transferred to the hips, where it is fixed, while optimum breathability is ensured.

I spend my time on La Palma as a guide, to prepare for the upcoming season together with friends and to take pictures. I keep coming back to the island every year because diverse trails like these are a rare treat. And they are super demanding, too – the volcanic terrain, the altitude, the wind and the weather are a challenge for me and my bike. The lava fields can be particularly treacherous, with sharp edges, high cranks and variable grip forcing you to pay close attention. Falling in this type of terrain is very unpleasant and you’d rather stay super focused. AIR FLOW CONTACT SYSTEM The requirement here is to transfer loads to the body’s centre of gravity such that they become neutral, while at the same time minimising the contact areas with the back. We solve this contradiction by means of a back component where all ventilation components such as large ventilation

channels and specially grooved and perforated EVA pads behind mesh material have practically been moved to the inside. This ensures that the pack fits close to the back and simultaneously provides optimised back ventilation.

Constant, free air circulation is guaranteed as a result of the vertical air channel. Gaps along the sides of the channel allow additional air to escape.

VENTI FLAP The VENTI FLAP system enables folding the back piece away for maximum ventilation, and thus enhanced carrying comfort. During longer ascents, you can increase the distance to your back by opening the adjustment strap to boost air circulation.

During descents you can reduce the distance again, which then ensures that the backpack sits firmly and is completely neutral to movement.

BODY HUGGING The distinguishing feature of EVOC´s “Body Hugging” fit is that the backpack´s centre of gravity is positioned as close to the body as possible, and the load is distributed over a large area and transferred to the hips.

Optimised linking of the shoulder straps and the wide hip wings that “grow out” of the back part ensure that the backpack remains firmly in position during any kind of activity – for more comfort and control.

“To officially start my biking season I travelled to New Zealand for a second consecutive time. After many weeks in the snow it was so great to ride in the sun again and discover some new trails. We went on a road trip by van and by bike to explore the backcountry, and found flowy forest trails but also many sections that were more rugged. The rocks offered enough grip for riding the downhills safely, but when it rains you would have check things out very carefully before dropping down a trail. Once again, these varied trails were perfect for me to prepare for the first race of the season – the Enduro World Series that takes place just before the Crankworx in Rotorua. 2 SEPARATE WHEEL COMPARTMENTS ON THE SIDES The stabiliser rods over the tyres and rims distribute pressure from the exterior over the side areas, so spokes or brake discs arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bent. Several plastic plates prevent the axles of the wheels from protruding through the material.

REINFORCED FORK MOUNT The fork is mounted to the rigid foam block with paddings. The fork ends are additionally protected by a plastic plate in the bottom.

EXTRA WIDE UNDERCARRIAGE WITH ADDITIONAL HANDLE The impact-protected undercarriage with the smoothly running, soft skate wheels ensures a safe transport and prevents tilting. The additional handle enables you to lift the bag securely when loading it.

OPTIMAL FORCE DISTRIBUTION

The more fragile portions are protected by reinforcing elements in neuralgic areas (plastic/PE plates and rods, foam padding). As the frame is positioned upright, the areas of the bike that can take stress (saddle-saddle post-down tube; front set-head tube-fork) are actively used to deflect impact and pressure from the exterior. The wheel compartments and the major part of the weight are in the rear area of the bag, which means that the centre of gravity is focused on the wide, stable running gear. That is why pulling the bag has never been easier. The numerous, cleverly positioned handles make handling the bag while loading also very simple, wherever you are.
