Date Your Leads Marry Your Customers

8

Evolution Magazine/ February 2014

“Failure to follow up with unconverted leads sacrifices more profit than you’d probably believe” In October of 2001, the prettiest girl on my college campus, a popular upperclassman, agreed to go on a date with me, a nerdy freshman. That following February, she agreed to marry me. Yes, it was quick and this sort of relationship often crumbles as quickly as it starts. But after 12 years of marriage, I still tell everyone that taking my wife “off the market” was one of the smartest decisions I’ve ever made. The things that made the wooing process so fast and the ensuing relationship so successful work equally well in my approach to attracting leads and winning customers (taking them “off the market”): singularity of focus, clarity of purpose, selfless commitment to providing value, trustworthiness and reliability. The Dating Game When I was 19-years old, I was different than most of my peers. I wasn’t in a rush to jump the broom, but I wasn’t interested in casual dating. I was going to treat my girlfriend as my potential future wife. Never did I imagine my life would change so rapidly, but the point is clear: if you’re serious about who you date and why, you’ll move towards wedding bells quicker than those who are “playing the field.” You have to know who you want as potential customers and why. You wouldn’t just date anyone, and you don’t want just anyone as your customer. Who is your target market? What kind of prospect is a good fit for you and your business? In turn, they should know you’re serious. It’s in your best interest to quickly establish what kind of relationship you’re interested in. Your leads should be those people or businesses who know what you stand for and what you can do for them. There’s no time to fool around. It doesn’t make sense to casually “date” your leads. They should be treated as serious candidates until they disqualify themselves. Be intentional about how you progress through this stage. Follow up regularly (like flirty phone calls), demonstrate unique value (show off your best assets), and present opportunities to move the relationship forward. Don’t be afraid to ask! This is often a long-term proposition. Most people don’t get married right away. (How long did Steve Urkel chase Laura Winslow?) Just because you’re ready to have a customer doesn’t mean she’s ready to be one. But if she’s worth it, commit and stay in touch. (Failure to follow up with unconverted leads sacrifices more profit than you’d probably believe.)

After the “I Dos” When you get married, everything changes – in a good way. Your girlfriend isn’t your girlfriend anymore; she’s your wife. That makes all the difference in the world. When a prospect spends money with you, it’s like a wedding ceremony. There’s as much difference between a lead and a paying customer as there is between a Friday night date and a spouse. But here’s where so many business owners – and husbands for that matter – go wrong. We feel that once we close the deal, we can kick back and take it easy, or even start thinking about the next customer. This is a huge mistake. Neglect is relationship suicide. Treat your customers like you want them to stick around forever. Maybe they will. The best new customer is a satisfied old customer. When someone becomes your customer, you become responsible for them. It’s your duty to guide them in the right direction… to protect them from error…to do everything in your power to improve their life in your special way. Your current customers already know and trust you. Your investment in winning them over is paying dividends. As you continue to treat them well, they’ll be increasingly willing to spend more money on bigger projects. They’ll happily brag about you and introduce you to their friends. Doesn’t that sound more exciting that starting the dating game over and over again? Parting Thoughts Naturally, I don’t advise you to stop gathering and nurturing leads. Rather, I encourage you to recognize the value of your current customers. To think about ways to expand your mutually profitable interactions. Loyalty pays off in the long run. It all starts with you. If you only talk to your customers when you need something, they’ll start to tune you out. If your communications are self-centered and self-serving, it won’t be long before you’re talking to yourself. On the other hand, when you treat your customers with love and respect, they’ll return the love. That sort of attitude will separate you from your competitors and win customers for life. I tell everyone I know that married life is the good life. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. Start “dating” your leads with the express purpose of creating customers you can “marry” and I’m sure you’ll feel the same way I do.

MULTI-TALENTED TEEN FLOURISHING IN THE FIELD OF JOURNALISM Kevin Wilson Contributing Journalist Many high school girls would be delighted to be homecoming queen. Shay’na Fields knows the feeling – she’s already had the experience twice. The popular sophomore from Dunwoody, Georgia, one of Atlanta’s northern suburbs, is also an award-winning singer, actress and interviewer, as well as a solid student. She speaks and writes French fluently (and tutors other students), maintains a 3.0 GPA and keeps a spiritual outlook. Dr. Tanisha Rodgers, a Biology educator at Dunwoody High, pulled Shay’na aside one day, and said that there was something different about Shay’na, whose name in Hebrew means “beautiful one.” “The students love her. She has it all; never been disrespectful, very articulate and intelligent, positive glow, and when absent, she returns to the classroom to earn all A’s,” Rodgers said. “She’s always giving God the praise!”

10 Evolution Magazine/ February 2014

She got it honest. Her mother, Willetta Denise Williams, has performed as a singer and dancer for about 30 years. She discovered Shay’na’s gifts when her daughter was nominated to be the inspirational speaker for her graduation class. But there was an inkling much earlier. Shay’na’s spacious teal bedroom has a collection of media passes on the wall above her dresser, along with a trophy from a Spring Recital dance competition she won at age 3. On her dresser is an award from a musical production called the “Orlando Chocolate Nutcracker,” which sits next to a Rising Star certificate from the Fox Theater, Atlanta’s premier venue for live entertainment. Since starting school, Shay’na has earned more than 50 honor roll certificates and principal awards. Her favorite subjects are social studies, literature and science. “I like how science makes you think and explore,” she says. Shay’na’s weekdays start at 6:45am. She straightens up her room, walks her puppy, eats breakfast and then proceeds to the bus stop and heads out for eight hours of school. Currently, she’s taking Analytic Geometry, Biology, Drama and French 2. “Without education and knowledge, there is no wisdom, because knowledge is power,” Shay’na told Evolution Magazine. Going home straight from school is hardly the norm for this busy teen. Shay’na is a reporter for the Dunwoody Chapter of Skills USA, an organization that helps students prepare for every possible career path. She reports before fundraisers and conferences. The national conference of Skills USA is held in Kansas City. The state regional championship will be held in Atlanta on Feb. 7. When she does have downtime, Shay’na hangs out with best friends Nadia Watkins and Aliyah Smith. The threesome hangs out at the mall, checks out movies or a game of hoops. Nadia, 15, said she wants to attend the University of Kentucky and major in Sports Management. She calls Shay’na her sister. “We’ve known one another since third grade. She’s down to earth, loving, creative and never settles for less,” said Nadia.

Willetta Williams and her ex-husband always encouraged their daughter to pursue the arts. Dancing led into acting and other activities. Five years ago, as it became increasingly apparent that Shay’na’s talent would take her places, Williams became Shay’na’s manager. The Speech-Language Pathology graduate from South Carolina State University books, gigs, trains Shay’na in public speaking, does research, designs her clothing, and handles duties as her makeup artist. Williams, a research guru, found a golden opportunity in 2011 on a casting website that needed six kids for a church scene in a motion picture directed by award-winning filmmaker, Tyler Perry. Perry simply wanted the kids to praise God in church. Shay’na easily got the nod, sang “Oh Happy Day”, and earned $97 for eight hours as an extra in Madea’s Witness Protection Program, which was released in 2012. Also in 2011, Shay’na played a lead role as Jessica, a foster child, in Chosen, a short independent film directed by Matt Pope. In 2013, Sid Roth, host of It’s Supernatural, a Christian talk show, hired Shay’na for the reenactment of a church scene titled "Azuza Street Miracles.” Shay’na admires actors Kimberly Elise and Samuel L. Jackson. She especially loved Elise’s roles in Diary of a Mad Black Woman and The Loretta Claiborne Story. “The effect she has on the audience is incredible; she really comes to play that character, and that’s why I love the art of acting,” Shay’na said. Willetta Williams persuaded Reginald Lewis, CEO of Urban Spice Magazine and Urban Spice TV, to hear Shay’na sing and the teen auditioned for one of his shows. www.evomag.co

E “Her voice is like Anita Baker’s,” Lewis said. He also taught her the ropes of interviewing and encouraged her to study reporters and their interviews the same way an athlete watches game tapes. In 2012, Shay’na hosted the US Kids of Atlanta Event on Urban Spice TV. She was the only teen on the red carpet. To date, Shay’na has conducted at least 15 solo red carpet interviews, including singer Keith Sweat, civil rights legend Andrew Young, Jr., a Miss Black Universe, actor/comedian Rodney Perry and Emmanuel and Phillip Hudson, producers of funny videos in everyday life on YouTube. Prior to an interview or event, Shay’na researches her subject online and pinpoints highlights about the event. “Time management is of great importance,” she said. At the Lefteye Lopes’ Tribute Concert at Porter Sanford, Shay’na demonstrated her artistic skills as host. “She’s very entertaining,” said Rhonda Wilkins, CEO of Divas Unlimited, after seeing Shay’na in action.

12 Evolution Magazine/ February 2014

At a recent Giving Back event at the Double Tree Hotel in Atlanta, Shay’na portrayed wildly popular Disney character Doc McStuffins, who fixes broken toys in her backyard playhouse clinic. “I enjoy journalism. I am a people person who loves to travel. I feel weird without acting. I cannot do without singing, acting and dancing. Art is me,” said Shay’na when asked her favorite career path. Shay’na would like to attend the University of Southern California. She said that 20 years from now she wants to be a household name on the big screen and television. The first lady of Hip Rock, Reigndrop Lopes, admires Shay’na to the fullest. “I believe she will excel in all of her endeavors and stardom is definitely in her future. I only wish that I possessed the same confidence and drive when I was her age. Shay’na has the ability to interview with the best of the best. Shay’na is that diamond in the rough.”

How To Know A Good Coach From A Bad Coach I had a revealing conversation with an entrepreneur from Silicon Valley the other day. This entrepreneur has regrets about his lack of success (rather, he has the limiting belief that he lacks success). Recognizing that he needed help, he hired several coaches, only to get burned every time. It’s difficult for him to see any value in the coaching field anymore. Now, while I wouldn’t take him on as a client, I wanted to write this for him. He asked a question that needs to be answered by a coach who not only has the ability to produce results, but also has proof to back up his claims. His question was “How do you know a good coach from a bad?” The reality is that there are thousands of active coaches today. Not every coach is going to be the right fit for you. The coaching industry is growing at an incredibly rapid pace and a high percentage of new coaches are total novices. They call themselves coaches to create an income stream, but they have no care or concern for their clients. It can be tough to find someone who is truly in it for YOU and not just for themselves.

Here are some distinct characteristics that separate the real coach from the want-to-be coach. REAL COACHES Sell VALUE, not TIME. One of the first things I tell my clients is this: “We will meet as much as you need me, but as little as possible.” Coaching is all about serving the client, reaching the client’s goals, providing direction, accountability and clarity for the client. Let’s use an analogy here we can all relate to. Suppose you are going to the dentist because you are in a lot of pain from a tooth that you know needs to be pulled. You don’t care where the dentist got his degree from, how many times he’s done this procedure before, if his nurses are certified, how many patients he’s helped or who those patients are. What you truly care about is getting rid of the pain. After all, that’s the whole reason you are there. The same is true for coaching. People seek out coaches because they are in pain. They’ve made a decision to seek professional guidance and they want to see results as quickly, effortlessly and painlessly as possible. So let’s say you’re an average person who works really hard for his money and you ask the dentist, “How much is this going to cost?” The dentist says, “$600.” You’re thinking, “That’s a whole week’s worth of work!” You proceed to ask, “How long is this going to take?” The dentist quickly replies, “Five minutes. It can take as long as you want, but the price will still be the same.” You are there because of severe pain. No amount of medication is going to resolve the issue, so the only option is to pay a premium price to a service provider that can solve your problem. In just 5 minutes, you’re back to your normal routine, essentially saving you both time and money. This principle is also true for a professional coach. They charge premium prices and deliver massive results as quickly, effortlessly and painlessly as possible.

REAL COACHES Qualify Clients. Let’s use the same analogy. Let’s say you went to the dentist because your gums would bleed every time you flossed. The dentist recognizes this as a symptom of a gum disease. And while he could stop the bleeding, he realizes that there are specialists out there who are more qualified (and more expensive), who have the tools, knowledge and resources necessary to fix the problem immediately. They are called specialists because they specialize and focus solely on one thing. So he sends you to a periodontist. The same is true for coaching. If a coach isn’t qualifying his clients, then he isn’t maximizing his own potential or the potential of his clients. I turn away more clients then I help because they don’t meet the qualifications required to become my client. The more a person in any field specializes, the higher his price becomes, creating a premium product in the marketplace.

In any of these cases if you can’t afford or use the “I don’t have enough your goals. Coaches who walk the talk are incredibly authentic; they money” excuse, you will be turned away. don’t care if you are offended by their words or actions because they are doing what’s best for you. You have to get comfortable being Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of coaches who don’t qualify uncomfortable in order to get the results you want in the most potential clients. There are plenty of coaches who sell time instead effective way possible. As you can see, it’s all about YOU! of value. Minimum Wage

Don't raise it, GET RID OF IT! After hearing the continuing, and emotional debate on whether raise minimum wage should be raised, I want to share my opinion. Don't raise it, GET RID OF IT! Here's why.... Have you ever noticed that you rarely ever see any Walmart workers going on strike? We do see some random people hired to stand on the streets and shame the company for exploiting its workers. I remember in 2006 when Chicago tried to force legislation where Walmart had to pay its workers $10 an hour minimum by 2010 because the wages were “unfair.” The law only applied to companies with more than $1 Billion in sales AND stores at least 90,000 square feet.

Key Point - Walmart obviously valued their employees' time more than the wage. Otherwise, they wouldn't pay that much. The employee valued the wage more than their time, or they wouldn't take the job. When we agree to our pay, it is a win-win transaction! However, there are activists, unions, struggling competitors and other self-interested organizations that want you to believe that we are victims to businesses that provide us jobs. They want you to believe that you "deserve better." They try to convince you that someone doing a simple job should be paid a fair, living wage. What they fail to realize is when that happens, prices will inflate and push those same people back into poverty again. Their assumptions insult my intelligence, and you should feel insulted, too. It's like someone telling us, "Because you don't know any better and you are helpless, I'm going to fight for you to get paid more."

What's fascinating is that the minimum wage was $7.25 an hour at the time – and over 15,000 still applied for the 400 available jobs! Did Walmart executives hold a gun to these people's heads coercing them to apply?

If I want to be paid more, I'll ask for it! If they won't give me the wage I want, I'll find someone who will pay me that. If no one wants to pay me that, it's probably because I'm delusional and need a reality check.

Were these people just dumb? Of course not! These applicants knew what the potential wages were, and were okay with it! They were willing to accept those wages. By the way, only 2 of those employees received the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour when the store opened.

As a business owner myself, I have never hired someone at minimum wage. I pay more because I want better quality people working with me. In fact, I fear that if I don't offer enough, I won't get the talent I desire. When they say "yes" to the wage, with their own free will, they clearly value their time at least a little less than that wage. Otherwise, they wouldn't take it. When I worked in corporate America, my final wage was $11.62 an hour. Of course, I wanted more money and thought I was worth more than that. But you never saw me tear up the check and throw it in their faces either. I accepted the pay every pay period. Each of us has the freedom to choose what we feel our value or time is worth. Don't insult us by calling us victims! My Solution - Trust our intelligence, stop wasting our tax dollars debating this ridiculous topic, and eliminate the minimum wage. As employees, we'll determine what we want to be paid. As employers, we'll offer employees what they are willing to work for to make it a win-win for both of us. Is that "fair" enough?

E Ask Michelle Q: I love doing face to face training events and believe that my content is valuable, however the turn out to my events have been lower that desired. What can I do to boost my registration? A: Face to face are great because the energy sets the tone for great connection and creativity. However in order to experience that energy people have to respond to your offer to attend. There are several things you can do to boost your registration. First, map out your marketing strategy for your event. Depending on the size and the desired number of attendees, you may need to start marketing anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months before the event. Second, get really clear on the primary objectives of your event and why this is valuable to your ideal attendee. This will help you frame your marketing message. Third, develop your pricing strategy using bonuses and money saving strategies to drive early registration. The thing to remember is Prior Preparation Makes For Positive Profits. Q: Oftentimes when I'm at a networking event with other business owners who offer similar services, I find it hard to stand out. How can I make myself stand out?

A: This is a great question and one that many business owners, especially those in the service profession, deal with all the time. I recommend the following formula when crafting your statement to answer the question, "So what do you do?" The first part focuses on who you serve. The second, the problem you solve and the third the solution you bring. A good example this statement model is one a doctor friend of mine uses. She's a gynecologist specializing in hormone treatment for women. She could state that when she introduces herself or she could say the following. "I help women who are struggling with their hormones to increase their energy, stop gaining weight and eliminate hot flashes so they feel 10 years younger." As you can see the latter statement clearly defines who she helps, what she does and the solutions they can receive.

MAKING 2014 YOUR BREAKTHROUGH BUSINESS Michelle Brown-Dawson,

YEAR

For some, 2013 was a great business year. For others, it may have been challenging or a year of transition. Whichever category you may find yourself, I want to share with you several strategies that has helped me to grow my business exponentially every year. I created this system based on the word “FOCUS.” My business and hundreds of others who have learned these principles AND taken decisive action, experienced phenomenal growth in their businesses. I guarantee you that if you follow the process that I’m going to lay out for you, you’ll begin to see exponential growth in your business as well. F - FIND YOUR NICHE AND UNIQUENESS What do I mean when I say to find your niche? Find and get clear on who you want to serve, that needs what you have to offer, values the solution that you offer and is willing pay for it. You may have the first two, but you need to have the third one as well. You need people who not only need what you have but also value what you have and are willing to pay your price for it. What it means is that you have to get clear on the problem that you solve. You also need to understand what makes you unique. Know that there may be many others who do what you do, but none of them can be you doing it! That may seem very simplistic, but it’s a very profound statement. The reason why it’s profound is that regardless of what field you’re in or your product/service, when you allow who are you to be a part of that service offering, that makes it unique. O - ORGANIZE YOUR ENVIRONMENT Some believe organization and/or structure stunts creativity. The opposite is actually true. It can really boost and expand your creativity. When I say get organized, I’m talking about several key areas. It involves being organized in your environment, priorities, people and time in order to increase your productivity. Your current income is a by-product of these areas. If you want to increase your income, it requires that you improve your life in these four areas. C - CREATE BOLD STRETCH GOALS It's important to create bold stretch goals to maintain your momentum and to grow your income exponentially. The goals that you set in your business should always pull you forward and cause you to stretch and to grow. When you’re setting these goals, don’t worry about how you’re going to do it. What do you want to accomplish? Then later you can work on the how and map out how you’re going to accomplish it. If you find yourself reaching a plateau in your business, I recommend that you review your goals and see if they have enough stretch in them or if you’re trying to play it safe.

U - UNDERSTAND THE NEEDS OF YOUR CLIENTS There was a movie that came out called “Field of Dreams.” In that movie, the concept was if you built it, they will come. This does not work for business. It’s not what you think your potential client needs. You have to find out what they want and meet that need and then craft your marketing message to speak their language. By doing this, they immediately identify themselves in your message and see that you have the solution to their problem. Now you know your ideal client and what their needs are, but maybe you’re still not getting a consistent response. What other actions should you take? I’m glad you asked that question because that brings us to the letter S. S - SOLIDIFY YOUR MARKETING SYSTEM Solidify your marketing system to continually stay in contact with your ideal client. It’s interesting that as I’ve coached people, I’ve asked, “How often do you market?” or “What does your marketing system look like?” and people have told me, “I market once a week or a couple of times a month. I attend a couple of events.” You need to be market your product or service every single day. Consistent marketing is essential in order to grow your business. This is how you stay top of mind to your ideal client. They may not be ready to take action immediately, but when they are ready, they will think of you because you have kept your message in front of them on a consistent basis. It takes more than just knowing the acronym. You must put action behind the acknowledge. To get you moving, I'm gifting you with my Get Focused Five-Day Challenge. Secrets of Highly Pursuable Professionals Who’s in hot pursuit of you? Professionally, that is. I don’t want this to turn into another episode of Cops. Anyway, if the answer is, “Not enough people,” consider these six strategies for becoming a more pursuable professional: 1. Be beautiful to listen to. Consider the last five vendors you’ve hired. Or the last five colleagues you’ve partnered with. Hell, even consider the last five people you’ve dated. Question: How many of those individuals were a pain in the ass just to LISTEN to? Every interaction you have with somebody either adds to or subtracts from the positive perception of your brand. What’s more, the pursuit of a potential person – business or personal – is either exacerbated or enhanced by the way you feel when interacting with that person. Remember: When you’re music to people’s ears, you’re a magnet to people’s wallets. Would YOU be compelled to listen to you?

2. Learn from the daters. “Pursue” is a common term used in the dating world. I’ve collected a myriad of journal, blog and message board quotations from various single people. As you explore this list, consider the implications of each “non-pursuable” characteristic for your own business: • “I didn’t pursue because I assumed he was out of my reach.” Are you perceived as being out of your customer’s league? • “I didn’t pursue because I assumed he didn’t like me.” What false assumptions are your customers making about you? • “I didn’t pursue because I didn’t feel confident enough to go after him.” How are you increasing customer self-confidence? • “I didn’t pursue because I was scared of the potential of failure.” How could you remove the threat of rejection for your customers? • “I didn’t pursue because I saw him kissing some random girl in a bar.” Are you too engaged with your current customers to take on anybody new? • “I didn’t pursue because I was worried he was going to tell his mom.” Are your customers concerned about confidentiality? Remember: Business and dating are EXACTLY the same thing. You still have customers. You still need to look attractive in their eyes. You still have to keep them satisfied and coming back for more. And still need to make yourself more pursuable to future prospects. Whom are YOU dating?

Remember: Business and dating are EXACTLY the same thing. You still have customers. You still need to look attractive in their eyes. You still have to keep them satisfied and coming back for more. And still need to make yourself more pursuable to future prospects. Whom are YOU dating?

3. Become the physical embodiment of your expertise. It’s one thing to know something; it’s another thing to BE that something. And if you want to be pursued in greater numbers, your expertise must become crystallized through experience PLUS intelligent reflection upon that experience. That’s certainly the type of person I’d pursue. Someone who not only knows (x), but who IS (x). See the difference? Embodiment secures trust. Embodiment reinforces character. And embodiment promotes pursuit. Are you acquiring knowledge or do you possess REAL wisdom? 4. Figure out what’s missing for people. If you build it – and they DON’T come – it’s because they don’t want it. Or because they don’t know you built it. Or because you didn’t solve their problem. Or because you’re passionate yet irrelevant – cool but inconsequential. Here’s the secret: People who are pursued are the ones who UNDO what the customer has done to himself. But they’re not jerks about it. They just strategically position themselves around what they were designed to cure. And as a result, prospects are hot on their trails. What problem are you the answer to? 5. Learn from the lawyers. In the legal world, “pursuable” is also a term traditionally designated to cases and complaints that have a positive chance of succeeding. And the best lawyers are the ones who pinpoint pursuability immediately, so as not to waste anybody’s time. Interestingly, when I researched the term “non-pursuable,” I found a collection of cases from a variety of industries. Each of them predicted non-pursuability in some fashion. So, as you read each of these, consider the applications to your own career: • The case was non-pursuable because they passed the statute of limitations. Has the clock run out on your brand’s market relevance? • The case was non-pursuable because the charge wasn’t significant enough. Do you matter? Is the problem you solve painful enough to make people take action? • The case was non-pursuable because they didn’t meet the case criteria. What is your credibility strengthening process? • The case was non-pursuable because the complainant didn’t provide further information. Are you leaving people hanging?

• • • • • •

The case was non-pursuable because of the likelihood of rejection. Are you known for saying “no” reflexively? The case was non-pursuable because the accused was incarcerated. Have you actually left the house today, or are you still in your jammies? The case was non-pursuable because they were unable to contact the company. How many different ways can customers reach out to you? The case was non-pursuable because insufficient evidence was collected. If you were charged with the crime of delivering value, would there be enough evidence to convict you? The case was non-pursuable because they lacked substantiation. Are you proving value? The case was non-pursuable because the assailant was never identified. Do you have strong, distinct brand identity?

Remember: Lawyers know what they’re doing. Most of the time. OK, some of the time. Alright, fine, lawyers are evil and they should burn in the fiery pits of hell for all of eternity. But the point is, they ask better questions than anyone. Listen to them. They’re the masters at determining pursuability. Have you had lunch with your attorney lately? 6. Let your customers help you sell them things. People train you how to treat them. Customers tell you how to sell them. All YOU have to do is listen. Now, I’m not talking about any of that manipulative NLP mirroring/matching/pacing crap. I’m talking about leveraging the natural rhythms of your customers. Pinpoint their passions, preferences and personalities – then use those patterns to start enabling them to buy the way they’ve told you they want to buy. Because all buyers know what they want. ALL of them. You just need to listen. After all, what YOU sell isn’t the same thing as what THEY buy. Know the difference. How are you giving customers permission to make your business better? Remember: As much as you’d like to – you can’t MAKE people pursue you. You can, however, transform yourself into a more pursuable person. www.evomag.co

Time management might seem very important as it relates to productivity. Unfortunately, it’s the least important thing you can pay attention to. When you focus on prioritization and impact management, your effectiveness will increase rapidly. As you make this transition from managing availability (A.K.A. time) to managing priorities, you may notice that your To-Do list doesn’t get checked off as fast. This is normal. You need to focus on how quickly you get to results, not how quickly your list gets checked off. Believe it or not, once you embrace this shift, time becomes less relevant and decisions become easier. Following this path, you’ll be sure to make the largest impact as rapidly as possible.

Tech Talk Mark Edward Brown

Top 3 Tech Trends That Matter

Tech nirvana and integration are upon us all as the speed of advancements and convenience continue to make our lives easier, faster and more adventurous. The top 3 trends for the technology industry this year appear to touch every area of our lives from banking, communication, fitness, entertainment and healthcare just to name a few. The 3 overarching tech trends that I want to share with you today include Mobile Money, Portable/Wearable Technology and Service Management of Cities and large organizations. Let's discuss mobile money first because how and what we use to pay for our creature comforts continues to rapidly advance as the days fly by.

Mark Edward Brown is a Micro Coaching Consultant who works in the security and web traffic industry. Read more great content like this at: www.MarkEdwardBrown.com

26 Evolution Magazine/ February 2014

Mobile money continues to advance, enabling banking and financing systems, as well as the people and businesses they serve to receive payments in new and useful ways. Not only are advances being made in how we receive currency, alternate forms of payment like Bitcoin are discussed more and more every day. James Wester, Research Director-Global Payments, IDC Financial Insights says, "I think we'll see more emphasis on helping developers move payments further into the background. To this point, mobile payments have focused a great deal of attention on the payment itself, the technology and the method whereby a mobile payment occurs. For developers actually tasked with making payments happen, these discussions are almost counterproductive. They care more about integrating payments so that they happen as quickly and invisibly as possible. I think next year will see more efforts to give developers products that do just that."

Another amazing trend is wearable/portable devices which is hot in the tech industry right now. In the fitness sector, Nike, Adidas and others have introduced shoes, wristbands, and other devices that track your training statistics, thus allowing you or your trainer to tailor your fitness regimen for faster results. There are products that use "low energy" Bluetooth technology to provide stats on how many calories you burn, how far you’ve walked and how well you slept. When it comes to smartwatches there's the Galaxy Gear and the Sony Smartwatch 2. Apple may enter the market with its iWatch, and there are rumors that Microsoft also wants to get in on this action as well. While all of these advancements are good, the main drawback thus far has been that virtually all users want better battery life for their devices. The largest advance in the "wearable’s" category right now is Google Glass. This wearable tech is still in the early stages of development, being worn mostly by developers and early adopters. Google Glass purports that you can take pictures, video, conduct hangouts, receive directions, speak to send a message, translate your words to another language, receive travel changes and updates and much more "hands free." Right now, Google Glass primarily a geek fashion statement. However, it is poised to become a wearable product that you and I quite possibly can’t imagine living without.

By far, the largest of the technology trends and initiatives is the "smart city" where smart sensors and cloud-enabled apps connect transportation, metering, health care, lighting and environment data, and make it actionable. This is an international concept that has tremendous benefits for those that embrace the technology that is available and have the intelligence to integrate it right now. A few examples are: • Linking home electronics via a network to better meter and manage services used • Working from the home is becoming more commonplace. This new reality is changing the landscape of labor and the way money and services are used and earned by individuals, small businesses, and large corporations. • Electronic vehicles as public transit are making the need for individual ownership of gas-and diesel-consuming automobiles a thing of the past. From the individual level to the hustle and bustle of the city, technology has taken center stage. You can use it to make your life easier, you can unplug and go off the grid, or you can exist somewhere in the middle and react to changes and advancements as they are. Either way you look at it, the times are changing and so is the technology that brought us here. www.evomag.co

Overfed and Undernourished

28 Evolution Magazine/ February 2014

With 24/7 access to nutritionally-depleted, technologically-created, chemically-treated “food,” many of us are taking in thousands of calories that do little to sustain us, let alone nourish us and encourage us to thrive. With so many of us existing this way today, is it any wonder why we struggle with our weight and health? It’s so easy to grab prepackaged, vending machine, drive thru or shelf food, but what price are you really paying for all that “convenience?”

Not only does this pattern chip away at our confidence and selfesteem, it keeps us on a rollercoaster ride of blood sugar, mood and weight fluctuations. It lays the groundwork for insulin resistance (a precursor to diabetes) and other chronic illnesses while keeping us frustrated, discouraged and exhausted. It impacts our digestive health, our adrenal glands, fertility, our skin, hair, immune system, sleep, our ability to heal and so much more.

Larger sized clothing, higher medical bills and a decreased quality of life are just a few of the downsides. Why? Our bodies are designed to eat fresh, natural, whole foods that supply us with a wide array of vitamins, minerals, fiber and other incredible nutrients. Denying yourself of what truly healthy food provides robs you of your health, youth and vitality.

Now, before you get frustrated with yourself and think that your current eating behavior is simply the result of laziness or bad habits, give yourself a break. For many, this eating pattern causes intense cravings; your desire for this high sugar, empty food feels almost drug-like. The sense of temporary numbing and calm you feel after overloading yourself with these foods floods your body with hormones and chemicals, which offer temporary relief similar to a drug-induced state. Unfortunately, eating this way only further depletes and desensitizes your body, making it more and more difficult to achieve a healthy hormonal balance, taste sensitivity and sense of freedom, as well as preventing your body from achieving a natural, healthy weight.

Here’s what also happens when you eat this way: Foods that don’t nourish also don’t truly satisfy. So, we overeat in a search to find the satisfaction that those unhealthy food choices simply can’t provide. Of course, all of this overeating causes weight gain, and when our weight starts to impact us enough, we may severely restrict ourselves, believing that deprivation and discomfort is the only way to achieve lasting health and wellness. When we simply can’t endure the deprivation any longer, we go right back to eating the way we did before, only to feel we have somehow failed because of a lack of willpower or compliance. These emotions often encourage self-soothing behaviors. If we typically use food as our drug of choice, we’re looking at an ongoing cycle of mental, physical and emotional upset that could largely be avoided by changing the choices we make and the way we look at food.

Can this be changed so you feel a sense of peace and calm around food? Can food be used to nourish your body and mind without fear? Can you change eating behaviors that have left you overweight, undernourished and frustrated for years, even decades? Of course! It starts with awareness and then a plan. Marketing And Dating What is your USP? Dating and marketing have many similarities. Marketing companies talk about the USP, which stands for unique selling proposition. Translating that to dating, what makes you unique as a bachelor or bachelorette? This is where you need to be very self-aware, because then you are more likely to choose the correct person for you. Self-awareness is critical to dating and relationship success. You need to find out who you are and what makes you tick. You may want to enlist a trusted friend to point out things that you can’t see. What do you value? You and a potential mate may both say they value family, but to you that may mean visiting for holidays and a weekly phone call, to him it may mean weekly Sunday dinners and talking daily. Do you value exercise, religion, money or ambition? To what degree to you value these things? This matters because people spend time on things that they value. These are things to be pay attention to. Whether you are aware of this or not you are ALWAYS marketing yourself, in your work and in your personal life. How you dress, how you spend your time, what you buy and how you act…they all are telling others about you and what you value. If you run to the grocery store in workout clothes to buy organic veggies, that tells people that you are health conscience and care what you are putting in your body. If you are decked out with expensive jewelry and highend brands, you are telling the world that money and/or prestige is something that you value. Fundraising for a local shelter also tells others that this is something important to you.

When people say “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” they’re being illogical. This is how we see if there are similarities or not with the people that we meet. Obviously, we should look deeper into that person for the real story, but initial attraction comes from how people present themselves. Continued On Page 40

EA Gentleman’s Touch: Philadelphia Winter Photo Shoot by Jeremy Carden

During this time of the year, cold weather means bundling up under layers of coats and sweaters in order to keep warm. However, A Gentlemen’s Touch (AGT) once again demonstrates how to dress in certain conditions. AGT held a photo shoot in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There might have been diversity in the clothing, but the overall theme was about remaining fashionable and, most importantly, warm. Footwear ranged from loafers to boots according to the outfit being worn. Some participants even included scarves which is common item of clothing for the cooler temperatures. No heavy jackets were worn, the man instead chose to wear: jean jackets, sweaters or light vests. Looking at the photos it is easy to see that these outfits allow much easier movement than the standard large coat or heavy boots most people chose to wear. Just as the individual pieces of a puzzle are put together to form a beautiful picture, the same can be said about picking up an outfit. If AGT could be summed up in a one word it would be “class.” At first glance, it appears that the organization only teaches about the importance of dressing with style no matter what the occasion or weather condition. That is far from the truth; there is more to it than that. AGT reaches out to men of all age groups to teach that clothing does not make the man, but it is the man that makes the clothes. Carrying yourself with dignity, confidence and, of course, style can make all the difference in how you look in another person’s eyes. By first deciding who their customer is and then where they spend their time. In your personal life, you spend your time working, shopping, networking, volunteering, etc. If you love sports, you spend time going to or participating in sports. These are all places to find others that value the same things you do. The key is to be in the moment, look approachable and smile to others that you find interesting.
