For a long period the Village of Plaistow, at a day’s coach-ride from Westminster, was surrounded by the marshlands of the Lea Valley, but as London boomed in the 1700s, this vast empty space was ripe for industrial growth. Plaistow was already home to many rich merchants and professionals who worked in the City, but it soon also became a hive of commercial activity, with developing industries as diverse as flour-milling, papermaking, silk-weaving and gunpowder manufacture setting up in the area. By the early 1900s, West Ham was described as ‘The Factory Centre of the South of England’ with many businesses in construction, metalwork and engineering. Sadly, many of these factories were destroyed during the WWII bombing raids. However, a few historic buildings have survived, such as the Abbey Mills Pumping Station and Three Mills at Bromley-by-Bow. In recent years a new wave of regeneration has swept across the area with Canary Wharf rising from the redundant docklands, bringing with it City Airport, the Dome and the Excel Centre. By 2012 Stratford Marsh had been transformed as the home of the London Olympics, providing housing, schools and an extensive transport network and one of the largest shopping centres in Europe.

Six years after the eyes of the world were firmly fixed on the borough during the London Olympic Games, the pace of progress still continues today.
