Dear Friend, Carl Jung said, “Every form of addiction is bad, no matter whether the narcotic be alcohol or morphine or idealism.” When it comes to addictions, I don’t believe the core problem is the particular addiction (whether it be cigarettes, alcohol, sugar, shopping, gambling or any other addictive behavior); I believe the core problem is the nature of what causes a person to seek relief through an addictive substance or behavior. In my opinion, the drugs themselves aren't the true problem, but ill-fitted or weak solutions to a problem—an attempt to cope. If we can learn to address the issues underneath the desire we can learn new, healthy coping skills. I’ve found that addictive behaviors become non-issues when I feel well and whole. There isn’t a need to cover up, medicate or cope with life; life itself is joy. Whenever I detect a potentially harmful habit (and what truly is an addiction but a habit that becomes consuming, compulsive, and at times uncontrollable, with usage that persists even in the face of extremely negative consequences), I question what is my motivation with this habit? What do I get from it? Then I find a healthy replacement. This month, noted author and psychic Almine shares a resourceful article on addictions and the self-abandonment involved in these life issues. She explains how we lose our energy, and thus our power, by indulging in addictive habits. She teaches us to harness our true power to fill the void that addictions normally fill. It is a truly inspirational piece and I hope you gain a nugget of hope and knowing that we all can be whole, powerful and addiction-free.

ON THE COVER: Hannah Jorgensen's cover art creation stemmed from the deep desire she has for helping others. She wanted the picture to project the essence of an Earth Angel who incarnated to lend a hand to those who lost their own essence. Those who reside in the world of struggle have only forgotten that they are not alone, so take someone's hand in yours to connect back to Spirit! Only in Oneness can we remember who we are and drop the struggles and addictions in this physical world. New Musician Evokes Ancient Wisdom with a Modern Flair Sacred Alchemy, a Debut Album by Devaa Haley, Awakens the Full Power and Expression of the Sacred Feminine There is no question that we are a world out of balance. We have lost touch with the aspects of the feminine that bring us respect for nature, beauty, each other, humanitarian values, and an understanding that we are all connected. How do we embrace these qualities so we can live from a place of respect and harmony? Sacred Alchemy offers a way. It is a groundbreaking new album with a transformational purpose — to lead the listener into deep dimensions of the sacred feminine so they can explore and embrace these hidden aspects in themselves and help bring life back into balance. Sacred Alchemy introduces 13 facets of full-spectrum femininity with songs that evoke the archetypal energies of goddesses from the world's spiritual traditions. Each song has a specific feel or texture to it – something that connects us inside to the fullness of feminine expression. For example the song "Tara" explores the softer yin aspects of compassion, "Saraswati" reveals the playful and creative energies of the muse, "Shekinah" offers the wisdom of the Crone, "Isis" delivers the no-bullshit -tell-it-like-it-is Fierce Feminine, and "Aphrodite" expresses the sensual pleasures of the flesh. Letters.. An Evolving Hand in Healing I attended my first Panache Desai (www.panachedesai.com) conference in May, an experience divinely manifested — through Evolving! At the time, the health of both of my 90-year-old parents was declining rapidly. I felt overwhelmed and exhausted by all the confusing decisions to be made. My gut was wrenched, my heart aching. During lunch in my car, I prayed for relief and clarity. My eyes welled with tears; I felt peace, as if I had let go. It felt good — I felt heard. On my passenger seat was the untouched May Evolving introduced to me the previous week by my yoga student. The first words I saw were “Michael Beckwith/ Panache Desai” at the Overland Park Sheraton. Previous Dr. Beckwith programs had deepened my meditation practice, but Panache? I listened to Panache’s online video. Drawn to the title “The Heart of Possibility,” yet having decided not to be a conference groupie, I was hesitant to embrace another new face with another great message. But I’d think about it. In re-listening to the video, I felt Panache’s deep sincerity and commitment to others’ spiritual growth nudging me to say “yes.” Another wonderful gift — my husband wanted to go to Friday’s session, a first! It was so meaningful to see him engaged. I remember him looking at me, smiling, when Panache mentioned “I see you,” the words from Avatar that we’ve said to each other ever since we saw the movie — it is a feeling of connection deeper than love. My husband was so inspired that he urged me to register for Panache’s weekend session, during which something truly shifted within. Relinquishing my pattern of taking constant notes, I truly listened, trusting I’d receive what I needed. This was the right choice, as a Panache session is a warm, vibrational (and often funny), lifechanging experience, not an intellectual pursuit. My takeaways and calls to action were powerful. Panache said, “If you are procrastinating, you are not par-

ticipating. Meditate. Dance. For the next two years be mindful, take care of your health and love yourself.” I’ve not heard such clear, concise inspiration since my spiritual journey began in the late 1980s when I was a resident at Kripalu Yoga Center. I believe Kripalu and yoga saved my life following a life-changing burn injury — it was my first introduction to self love. Meeting Panache has activated within me an even deeper understanding of this truth. What else has shifted? Soon after the “Heart of Possibility,” I was asked to lead a Saturday class at Core Balance Yoga. After 12-plus years of teaching on the side through Longview College, I’d always wanted to be connected with a studio. Voila! Now if I don’t make it to a Zumba class, I dance to a CD in my basement! My husband sees that my energy is better and the bubbly part of my personality is more evident. My parents’ circumstances haven’t really changed, but my approach is one day at a time, remembering to be present and just love them — Divinity is present and I am participating in living! Thanks so very much to both Evolving and my new friend Panache for touching my life and the lives of so many. I am now an avid Evolving supporter and also plan to attend another Panache weekend, along with three friends who’ve reveled at the profound shift in me. Voila!

Instead of Pasta Bethany Klug, D.O.

I

advise everyone who wants to achieve a normal body weight and stay healthy to follow my simple eating rule: Eat six fist-sized servings of vegetables every day and enough protein to feel grounded, focused and steady. Fist-sized is a portion the size of your fist or what you can pick up with your fist. So what about pasta, grains and potatoes? They are entirely optional. I advise anyone wanting to lose weight to avoid them near totally. Why? Cardiothoracic surgeon, Steven Gundry, MD said it best in my article last month. Anything that tastes sweet, including flour, pasta and starches, activates the “store fat for the winter program.” The winter famine never comes these days, so we get bigger and fatter. Yet, I find it hard to give up pasta’s convenience, and there’s nothing I like better than a cold tomato sauce over noodles now that tomatoes are in season. I’ve found a terrific solution. A $30 device called a spiral slicer can

convert a medium to large zucchini into beautiful long curly strings that look like noodles. The best part, it’s a serving of vegetables, not starch! This spring, before zucchini were in season, I did the same with kohlrabi, a space alien vegetable of the broccoli persuasion and a persistent find in my weekly CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) bag. These “noodles” can be done by the time the water for pasta has started to boil. That’s quick! There’s no need to cook zucchini “noodles.” They’re perfect raw. For between $30 and $100, a mandoline can slice zucchini into “lasagna” or “ravioli.” I just spread the lasagna fixings or ravioli stuffing between layers of thinly sliced zucchini. I don’t cook the “pasta,” but you certainly could. I suggest using cooked fillings, brushing the top layer of "pasta" with olive oil then baking the final product until warm and golden. Here’s a raw pad thai recipe I can’t get enough of from happyfoody.com.

journey to wholeness

Healing Codependency Jude LaClaire, Ph.D. Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart… who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens. Carl Jung

wakening to the process of addiction and its twin, co-dependency, is a challenging and vital journey to wholeness. Melody Beattie in her book, Co-Dependent No More (1984, says a co-dependent person is one who “…lets another’s behavior affect him or her, and who is obsessed with controlling that person’s behavior. We believe that we’d be happy if the other person would just change.” The codependent person is "addicted" to wanting approval, to please others, control, peace at any price and feeling responsible for making others happy. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Let’s look at the developmental issues that put a person at risk for this kind of behavior. The infant seeks connection in the form of multisensory contact with primary caregivers. As we mature, we look for approval, recognition, reassurance and assistance in learning how to become independent in an age-appropriate way. The co-dependent in training may be neglected physically as well as emotionally. In addition to negligence, there is often abuse: physical, verbal, emotional or sexual. He or she may be expected to learn quickly, act more adult, be independent and take care of his/ her self's early developmentally. This toddler and young child may guess at how to be more "grownup" and get the message that their job is to take care of their caregivers. These persons may themselves be emotionally needy, suffer from mental or physical illness, have substance abuse issues or other addictions or be taken up by the needs of others. The child takes

the burden of feeling responsible for others internally or externally. The young child is missing important developmental stages and begins the search for relationships that can fill these holes. The codependent is often drawn to people who are not available emotionally, who may appear needy in some way and who may abuse or reject them. Hitting bottom, one wakes up to the unhealthiness of this process and is ready to begin the journey of healing. In Women Who Love Too Much, Robin Norwood outlines the steps for recovery: •Go for help. This may be difficult as asking for help is not in the co-dependent’s repertoire. This may mean counseling or some form of professional help. •Make recovery the first priority. This means looking squarely at destructive behaviors, finding alternatives and implementing them. •Find peers who understand. These individuals can assist in the journey of self-love and selfacceptance — practicing healthy relationships. •Develop a daily spiritual practice. This could be anything from embracing and reflecting on nature to identifying the source of Power within you and around you. •Stop managing and controlling others. It is a big challenge to know that we change the world around us by changing ourselves. •Courageously face our own problems and shortcomings. Without guilt or blame, we learn to reflect on the ways we sabotage ourselves; finding ways to change them. •Learn to not play destructive games in relationships: Rescuer, persecutor or victim. •Cultivate whatever you need to develop as an individual.

Embrace your own unique journey with curiosity and passion. •Learn to become "selfish" in a positive way. Develop your True Self. •Share with others what you have experienced and learned. Your new mantra in relationships will be, “I love you and respect you so much that I will not do for you anything I know you can do for yourself.” In mutual relationships you can give and receive as you allow yourself to be vulnerable and open… setting good boundaries. There will be new balance in your life as you find people who work with you cooperatively and empathetically and who receive from you with gratitude and respect. I know you will face the journey joyously and courageously.

Activate Your Positive Feelings Nancy Russell, M.D.

D

o you suffer from anxiety, depression and lack of energy from your stressful life? If you do, how do you try to manage freeing yourself from all the worries and stress of your everyday life? I’m excited to inform you today about a scientifically-validated software system that teaches techniques to help you create an optimal state in which the heart, mind and emotions are operating in-sync and completely balanced, named emWave. The emWave system and the exercises contained with the system are intended as tools for stress reduction, individual balance, optimal performance and personal growth. The emWave technology is based on “the coherence breakthrough.” Coherence is a state of synchronization between your heart, brain and autonomic nervous system which has been proven to have numerous mental, emotional and physical benefits. Coherence is not just relaxation. Coherence is a state of relaxation and revitalization at the same time. According to emWave, the coherence state is achieved and sustained by activation of a positive feeling; and then, shifting back to that positive attitude and emotion as you use the emWave system. The emWave Desktop is designed to help you achieve coherence and resilience though simple-tolearn exercises and feedback. Using a pulse sensor plugged into your USB port, emWave Desktop collects pulse data and translates coherence information into user-friendly graphics displayed on the computer screen. Through coherence techniques, interactive exercises and game play, emWave Desktop helps you bring your heart and mind into a coherent state, building resilience, increasing energy and promoting focus, mental clarity and emotional balance. There are five steps to this emWave system called the Practice Plan that you will be going through. Benefits that people often notice within two weeks of using the program include: more calm, less reactive, more

alert, better focus, less anxiety, more peace, more positive attitudes and better sleep. • Step one: Build coherence each day by using the emWave system for five minutes or more several days a week, as well as ten minutes once a week. • Step two: Focus on increasing your coherence score. Focus your attention on the area around your heart, the area in the center of your chest and breathe deeply, but normally. Think about positive feelings, like appreciation for the good things in your life, or the love and care you feel for someone or something. This will enable you to increase your coherence score. • Step three: Increase to more challenging levels. The e m Wa v e sy s t e m was d e si g n e d with four challenge levels, low, medium, high and highest. This helps people with different skill levels and goals to continue to gain significant benefits from using the emWave system.. • Step four: Increase your coherence baseline. Your coherence baseline is the amount of coherence

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

that occurs naturally in your heart rhythms as you move through the day. As your coherence baseline increases, it lifts up your energy to give you more cushioning when stressors or resistances come up during the day. Attitudes, emotions and perspectives become more positive and resilient. You can stay more connected with your heart. Step five: The importance of regular practice. Regular practice, as outlined in this practice plan, keeps fine-tuning your capacity to shift emotional, mental and physiological states. It helps you develop internal references of what coherence feels like, so that you can re-calibrate back to coherence during the day even when you are not at your computer.

At my office, we are offering personalized services to teach you this emWave technology to strengthen your path to optimal wellness. I can also discuss with you other therapies to enhance your health, including diet, nutritional supplementation, neurotransmitter supplements or hormone replacements. ow can I say “no” to family and friends? Well, I learned another lesson. I hosted over six houseguests these past months and bam! Down I went. And I was on vacation no less! After visiting the out-of-town Urgent Care, my body curled into a ball like a tired dog and I slept 36 hours. Too ill to eat, that crazy cold one feels with fever, my body eased its way into a healing cocoon. How did I become out of balance? For weeks in a row, I had given up my favorite weekend routine of peace and quiet: no social obligations, no appointments, few phone calls and no computer time. I wear old soft clothes, read, take quiet walks and enjoy yummy food. In particular, you readers who are the healers and teachers give so much of your energy! We need more rest. We need down time The energy of 2011 has been mega intense. The amount of electromagnetic energy alone has thrown many off balance. How do we change this? • Build in your quiet time. Full time workers: that means a quiet lunch in a park or a nook in the office building. Put on your I-pod and play your favorite 10 or 15 minute guided meditation. Write it on your calendar. Make an appointment with yourself. (Download free my version, Gentle Relaxation off front page of our website listed below.) • Never sacrifice good nutrition. Evolving writes about this each month. Make it fun. Tried a new recipe lately? It’s creative and joyful when you inspire your own food choices. Nutrition is part of our mental health. If we are depleted, it is hard to stay strong and optimistic. Avoid deprivation or its opposite, and create balance. • Ask your family and friends for help. I delegated a recent holiday to my sister, who was happy to take over. I brought the side dish.

Having a down day? Take a mental health day. Journal, meditate, go to yoga class, buy a new shirt… do anything harmless to shift out of it. Feel your feelings: hurt, confusion, over-whelm, sadness are human. Then shift out and lift to… Gratitude, happiness, love, peace, joy, contentment. Can’t find it yet? Give it 24 to 48 hours. Where awareness goes, life force (prana) flows. Still hurting? Call for help. Find a professional. Many psychologists offer “meridian tapping” or an exercise, which may heal you in the moment. Once, after 10 minutes of meridian energy tapping (Google it) I was laughing with joy and healed from stress and anxiety in the moment! Take your negative ego inventory and make sure you are not trapped: ◊ Control issues hide fear (control is covert – watch for it) ◊ Do not “nobilize” your suffering ◊ Watch for the trap of arrogance: no one is better than or less than ◊ Get off the blame game ◊ Stay free of being the victim

Eating Well in Kansas City ~ page 2 Food News Overwhelmed with Fresh Garden Produce? Donate to Harvesters Summer is in full swing and that means gardeners across our region are starting to harvest all those fruits and vegetables they planted this spring. Harvesters — The Community Food Network encourages local gardeners who have an abundance of fresh produce to donate fruits and vegetables to Harvesters’ Plant A Row for the Hungry program. “Harvesters helps feed one in eight people in our community and providing the most nutritious food possible is very important,” Harvesters’ President and CEO Karen Haren said . “Each year we work to distribute more fresh produce than the year before and gardeners in our community

can help us reach that goal — one row at a time!” In the spring, gardeners were asked to plant an extra row for the hungry. Now, produce can be dropped off at Harvesters or at participating garden centers throughout the metro. Harvesters will pick up the donated produce at the garden centers and distribute it to local food pantries, shelters and other food assistance programs. 2011 drop-off sites are: Family Tree Nursery, 830 West Liberty Drive, Liberty, MO; 8424 Farley, Overland Park, KS; 7036 Nieman Road, Shawnee, KS, Heartland Nursery,10300 View High Drive, Kansas City, MO, Kansas City Com-

munity Garden 6917 Kensington Ave., Kansas City, MO For more information about the Plant A Row for the Hungry program visit www.harvesters.org and click on Give Food. The local Plant A Row program is a partnership between Harvesters and the Master Gardeners of Greater Kansas City. Farmers’ market shoppers also can help feed the hungry by donating to Harvesters’ Farm to Table program. Every Saturday, look for Harvesters’ baskets at the City Market, Overland Park and Brookside farmers’ markets. Buy a little extra fresh produce and help feed hungry families in our community.

Farm Puts New Twist on Old Idea An area farm has put a new twist on an old idea — free home delivery. Schenker Family Farms has long served the Kansas City area with its grass fed beef, pastured pork, lamb and more. Many of their customers began asking for a Meat CSA, so they created one. The response has been amazing. “We have created a CSA with options for small families to large families… beef lovers, lamb lovers & more,” Cherie Schenker, who owns the 5th generation farm with her husband Kevin said . Options include beef only, pork only, lamb only, and any combination of the three. CSA

customers can also add on chicken and extra grilling items. The grilling items are very popular since the Schenkers are known for their brats, steaks and chops. CSA, a.k.a. Community Supported Agriculture, is a great way to save money and support local farms. How does it work? A CSA customer signs up with the farm to become a “Shareholder.” Shares come in lots of different sizes and costs, depending on the farm. Many CSAs offer a discount if shareholders pay in full rather than making payments. Schenker Farms offers a free bundle for paying in full and a gift certificate for referrals.

Most CSAs have a central pick up point weekly or bi-weekly. The Schenker utilize a delivery service. “In talking to our customers, we found that utilizing a central pickup point didn’t work for most of them. They are busy raising families, working, etc. and just don’t have time to be at a certain place at a certain time. So, we added the free home/office delivery option,” Schenker said. Sign-ups and deliveries are available yearround. For more information contact Schenker Family Farms at info@schenkerfarms.com or call 620632-4470.

I

t means something different for each person. No two people are exactly the same, have the same body structure, the same taste buds or even the same connections towards food. We are all unique and therefore have to find the right way of eating well that works just for us. Yes, I think there is a big difference between eating well in general and not eating well, however I do think too many of us try to put ourselves in the perfect little box with the perfect diet — its just not practical, nor enjoyable. Remember the old quote, everything in moderation? Well, I think that speaks quite a bit of truth. I think if we are reminded of moderation and also apply the general principal of eating to nourish the body, or even better stated, “Eat to LIVE” vs. “Live to EAT,” then we are already setting ourselves and our health, up for success. Of course there are so many different types of diets and lifestyles out there today that we can get pre-occupied or even confused by: vegetarian, vegan, raw, gluten-free, dairy-free, wheat-free, meat-free, macrobiotic, the list goes on and on. I like to keep it simple (hence the name, Simply Raw Lifestyle) so I focus on just a few main principles. 1) Eating food in their natural state, fresh from the earth like God intended and not from a box. 2) Eating plant-based food, full of all the vitamins and minerals, carbs, fats and proteins we need to function. Where do you think the animals you eat get this… from plants! Why not skip straight to the source? Just say-in! 3) Eating high vibration or nutrient-dense foods. Choosing foods that are going to have the most nutrient value for the amount of calories consumed. Sound simple enough? When we keep those main prin-

ciples I mind, it takes the guesswork out of what latest diet fad to follow. I also believe there are a few other things we can do to help support eating well. Get regular exercise, reduce stress, have love in your life and get enough sleep! You can start the love part by falling in love with my new chocolate company, www.onelovechocolate.com I think the rest are pretty self-explanatory, we just need to be reminded every now and then. Easier said then done — I know. However, once you start eating well, then the others will just be a natural progression. You will want to exercise because you feel so wonderful. You will sleep better because you are worn out from having such a vibrant day; and, because you feel so great. You will naturally have a heart filled with love because you are enjoying life and eliminating stress by choosing to focus on the positive and not the negative. Another couple of tools I was just reminded about this week were affirmations and meditation. By telling yourself positive affirmations every day you are living out your own consciousness; and, by meditating you are taking time to be still and listen to your divine self. Back to Eating Well… surround yourself with positive people who enjoy eating the way you do and make it a fun challenge. I know this isn’t always the case when you have strict dietary restrictions; however, make the best of it and remember my 3 principles from above. Eat food in its natural state, mostly plants and very nutrient dense. Here is a delicious and simple Kale salad recipe that is one of my favorites.

Kale Avocado Salad

1 bunch kale 1 large tomato 1 ripe avocado 2 Tbsp olive oil 1/2 lemon, juiced pinch cayenne pinch sea salt To Prepare: De-stem and break kale leaves into pieces and place in medium sized bowl. Chop the tomato and avocado and add to the kale. Drizzle the olive oil and lemon juice over mixture. Massage with your hands into the kale leaves until everything is well coated. Sprinkle cayenne and sea salt to taste. Enjoy! It's like a guacamole salad!

Eating Well in Kansas City ~ page 4 Food: A Path of Awakening — by Natalie George Sugar Free Results

L

ast month, I set out on a three-week journey of no processed sugar or wine. I initially resisted this cleanse but after a week, I was so happy that I had accepted the challenge. My inspiration for the cleanse was a result of rashes on my body, I wasn’t sleeping well, I lacked a feeling of aliveness and my body shape wasn’t a representation of who I feel I am. So what happened during the three-week cleanse? • Body rashes: I had a rash under my arms and irritation around my mouth prior to starting. By the end, my skin was doing much better but I do not believe it’s the result of the cleanse. I saw a dermatologist and don’t think the rashes are connected to my diet; however, I’m extremely grateful for the rashes as they got me to take action. • Sleep: Overall, my sleep was amazing during the cleanse. The only time I had difficulty was when I consumed too much caffeine. • Feeling of aliveness: I felt incredible. My energy levels and love for life skyrocketed during the cleanse. I felt

like I was vibrating on a higher, happier frequency. I was more present and aware. This seems like an odd description but I felt mentally and physically clean. Body shape: I lost weight!!! I lost 4 lbs which was pretty exciting for me. I even had someone complement me and tell me that I was looking good. Considering that I did not feel hungry or like I was dieting, it was a nice benefit to lighten up a little.

What contributed to my success? • Strong Reasons and Goals: Prior to starting, I got clear on why I wanted to participate in the cleanse. For me, I felt a strong calling to heal myself on many levels. I also wanted to provide inspiration the way others had inspired me to start this cleanse. The thought that what I was doing could possibly make a difference for someone else was enough to keep me going. • Accountability: I promised to keep track of my food diary on my blog. If you want to see it, go to blog.gratitudekc.com. There

were days that if I didn’t have that level of accountability, I would not have followed through on my commitment. If you want to make any change in your life, I highly recommend creating a structure that will have you be accountable. Rules: I pride myself on my free spirit and wrinkle my nose whenever the word “rule” is mentioned. After a week, I began to embrace the rules I set out for myself. I appreciated the boundaries. At times I wanted to break the rules but staying true to them boosted my confidence in myself. The Swap Out Method: I applied the “swap out” rule which means swap something on the avoid list with something on the approved list. David Wolfe has often said that it is simply a matter of doing the same action but improving the ingredients. You can still drink or eat something and keep the action the same. The difference is changing what is inside the beverage or food. So instead of wine at night, I drank a nighttime tea that provided a similar chilled-

out and relaxed effect. For my sweet tooth, I swapped a cookie and vegan ice cream for an apple or chia seed pudding. Nightcap Tea Recipe: Steep a Bedtime or Sleepytime Tea and enjoy by itself or add Ashwagandha, Valerian or passionflower herbs.

Weight Loss Competition!

Stay Cool and Light All Summer

T

oo hot to cook? Too hot to eat?

The Farmer’s Markets and our gardens are filling up with fresh, succulent veggies. Take advantage of the abundance at the markets of organic fresh veggies and try juicing them or making fresh soups instead. Summer is the easiest time for me to be 100 percent Raw Vegan. My mouth waters at the thought of fresh, crisp crunchy peppers, ripe, juicy tomatoes, and succulent, chindripping watermelons. It is the time when I walk out to the garden, bend down and pick a fresh cucumber hidden among the green scratchy leaves, wipe it off with my hand and CRUNCH into it. Ah! So sensual, so refreshing, so hydrating. Time and time again, I find myself reaching down for a leaf of some green (kale, mustard, spinach, turnip, or collard), pick it off and munch. I feel at times I am grazing as I walk through our gardens. My favorite juice at the present moment is so simple and incredibly tasty. It is simply cucumbers, Granny Smith apples, mint, and celery. When I walked in from the garden the other day (having made this juice earlier), my whole house smelled fresh, sweet and delicious. I immediately relaxed from just the smell. One of the reasons we are so attracted to juicy fruits and veggies in the hot summertime is that in the infinite wisdom of Nature — we are provided with just what our bodies need to adequately have water, nutrition and electrolyte-balancing foods. Forget those high-calorie, highcarb, high-priced, fabricated “energy drinks.” Instead, let me give my body what was made for it… fresh, beautiful and delicious juices. In the summer, it is so easy to throw a bunch of veggies into the food processor for Gazpacho; or, utilize your juicer for a delightful veggie drink. So staying cool in the 100 plus weather can be easy and your body can be protected, hydrated and nourished by adding a thirstquenching juice or fresh veggie soup to your diet every day. Though there are recipes (and I’ll provide a couple here, too), there’s no set way to juice. Sometimes my drink is like a juiced salad, including lettuce, spinach, cilantro, tomatoes, celery, lemon, cucumbers, and gar-

lic. Sometimes it's fruity — watermelon, mint, lime. But, all the time, it is tasty. Try it for yourself. And Keep it COOL, Baby! Summer Cool Juice (and room freshener) 2 cucumbers, organic (no need to peel, just cut to fit your juicer and go) 1 Granny Smith apple, organic (ditto) 1 small handful of fresh peppermint 2 stalks celery, organic (provide organic sodium at a cellular level) ½ quart water (I drink my juices diluted) Juice, pour into a tall glass, garnish with a sprig of mint and drink in joy! Eating Well in Kansas City ~ page 6 Healing Foods — by Jane Van Benthuson For the Love of Watermelon

I

love watermelon! I love to eat it, juice it and make smoothies, salads — even soups! No summer would be the same for me without watermelon. My mom always made a fabulous watermelon basket for our 4th of July and family reunion picnics. I can recall the juice running down my arms and dripping off my elbows while watching fireworks. The name is perfect as it's full of water and very hydrating. Exactly what our bodies need in this summer weather. It's also full of electrolytes. So leave the plastic bottles of Gatorade in the store and grab a big ripe melon. It's also low in calories so it's a great dessert at 45 calories per cup. Did you know melons are good for your sex life? The chemicals found in them help both males and females become more aroused, Some scientists say watermelon has nutrients that deliver Viagralike effects to the body’s blood vessels and may increase libido. These include lycopene, beta carotene and its phyto-nutrient citrulline, whose beneficial functions are a fairly recent discovery. Among them is the ability to relax blood vessels just like Viagra. Here are a few of the wonderful benefits of this soothing summer treat: Antioxidants: Watermelon contains some of the most powerful antioxidants so far discovered. Vitamins: It's loaded with Vitamin C and packed with Vitamin A (due to its concentration of betacarotene). Boosts your immune system: Vitamin C is something most people associate with oranges. But, watermelon has a lot of it and this contributes to a strong immune system as well as slower aging. Lycopene: Recent studies have shown watermelon to have the highest lycopene content out of any fruit or vegetable — even tomatoes!

Watermelon Facts

Watermelons are around 92% percent water (hence their name).

Ancient travelers used them as an easily transportable container of water.

Watermelon's official name is Citrullus lanatus. It belongs to the botanical family Curcurbitacae and is related to cucumbers, pumpkins and squash.

We have archaeological proofs that the first watermelon harvest occurred nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt.

Although we commonly refer to them as fruits, they are really a vegetable.

May prevent prostate cancer: This is also due to the antioxidants, especially lycopene. Re-hydration: Rich in electrolytes and 90% water, it's a healthy alternative to Gatorade. Increased energy: Truckloads of Vitamin B contribute to increased energy production. Some food experts recommend watermelon for Vitamin B1, B6 and magnesium deficiencies. Cope with anxiety and panic: Vitamin B6 increases the brain's ability to cope with stress and anxiety and so does magnesium. Cooling effect: Ever heard the saying, "Cool as a cucumber?" Well, the same goes for watermelon. Prevents macular degeneration: Another word for loss of vision, macular degeneration may be prevented by eating or drinking watermelon. Carrots are also in this boat.

fruits and vegetables. With all of these benefits and it's great taste, who can blame us for gobbling it up as fast as it gets ripe! I look for local organic melons at the farmer's markets, then juice the fruit, rind and seeds for a refreshing, light, hydrating, low calorie, high energy drink. You can also add mint, lime or even jalapeno to it for a little kick. I also just eat it plain! I tend to agree with Mark Twain when he said, “When one has tasted watermelon he knows what the angels eat.” Jane Van Benthusen is an alternative cancer thriver. In Japan, it's common for supermarkets to offer cubeshaped watermelons: they are grown in special cubic containers and their price is usually at least twice that of a normal watermelon.

There are over 1,200 varieties of watermelons, including some with yellow flesh, and others with blood-like stains in the outer rind.

The 1998 Guinness Book of Records reports that the largest watermelon was grown in 1990 by Bill Carson, of Arrington, Tennessee, and weighed 262 pounds.

According to history sources, a watermelon was thrown at Roman Governor Demosthenes during a political debate: he placed the watermelon upon his head, thanking the thrower for providing him with a helmet to wear as he fought Philip of Macedonia.

In China and Japan, watermelons are a common gift to offer your host.

Every part of a watermelon is edible, even the seeds and rinds: seeds are a common snack food in China (and they're often roasted) while rind is used to make jams. Reprinted from www.watermelonpoint.com

any people reading this article may not like what I have to say, yet for others, it may save their lives. I frequently ask my clients, “Does a good Pastor tell you what you want to hear, or what you NEED to hear?” The time has come where we need to stop fooling ourselves about the dangers of sugar. So without further adieu: There is no such thing as healthy sugar! Americans are so addicted to sugar that we will do anything to continue to satisfy our cravings. We justify it by saying that we only use “healthy” sugar as if that is something in existence. I cannot do justice to the tremendous damage sugar is doing to your health; but let me make a few quick points, give you references for further study and a couple of great recipes at the end. I want you to know I speak from experience on this issue. I grew up a sugar addict, from sugared cereals, Kool-Aid, soda by the case… to all the candy I could afford with my weekly allowance. By 30, my body was wrecked and I didn’t know why. What is sugar? How did God make sugar? Sugar cane is a STICK. It was never meant to be processed and consumed in large amounts. How about agave? It is still heavily concentrated sugar. It doesn’t come out of the plant that way, does it? How about fruit? Gorillas in zoos all around the country are getting diabetes and dying because nobody understands this. We, like the gorillas, eat too much fruit, as well. Fruit juice is just concentrated sugar. The very first step I tell anyone with Diabetes is to eliminate ALL sugared drinks. Drink water and herbal teas. Propel “water,” and Vitamin “water” are loaded with sugar. Look at the first five ingredients in “Pediatrician recommended” Pediasure. It’s mostly SUGAR! Critical note to parents: ADD and ADHD have needlessly become "REAL." This diagnosis causes people to utilize prescription drugs as a solution. In my opinion, there is an answer — worth checking out — for this illness (look it up, these terms don’t exist in England and most other countries). Stop giving your kids sugar and candy with artificial flavors and colors, give them nutrition and it can magically disappear. Yes, it may take a lot of time. Oh, they need to play outside, and not play video games inside all day. Really, it’s sometimes that easy! Ten million children in the U.S. are prescribed psychiatric drugs. Children 5 years and younger are the fastest growing segment for antidepressant prescriptions. These drugs and others, like Ritalin, can cause violent, aggressive and psychotic behavior; and, they can sometimes cause heart attacks, stroke and sudden death. They are prescribed for ADHD and have the same damaging effects as morphine, opium and cocaine. There are reports that 12 of the 14 school shooters (like Columbine and Virginia

anybody diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis? They are either a sugarholic, carbaholic (bread, pasta, etc.) or a combination of both. Cut out the sugar and grains and it usually disappears. Sugar will block the healing of your body if you have any injury or chronic illness. Sugar feeds cancer and all infectious diseases. Sugar blocks the absorption of the nutrients you are eating, especially all of your minerals. Please check out www.nancyappleton.com; this website will give you 143 reasons why sugar will destroy your health. You can also read, Sugar Blues by William Duffy. In 1975, Duffy accurately predicted the health disaster that is currently taking place in America because of our addiction to sugar.

Sugar Free Cinnamon Vanilla Pancakes 1 cup flour (millet, amaranth, or almond) 2 eggs ¼ cup water or coconut milk 2 Tablespoons olive oil ½ teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon baking powder 2 teaspoons cinnamon 2 droppers of Vanilla Stevia 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (Instead of syrup, use butter and Vanilla Stevia. For a real treat, eat with nut butters like pecan or almond butter.) Tech) were on similar types of drugs. Ok, back to sugar. Does this scenario sound familiar to anyone? Step one, you admit you are a sugar addict after years of denial — maybe because of a health problem or maybe just a new level of awareness. Step two, you throw away all your processed table sugar and stop eating the “obvious” junk like cookies, cake and candy. Step three, you load up on agave because it's “healthy” sugar. You still make smoothies every morning with three or four types of fruit and tablespoons of agave because it’s “healthy.” The number one mistake vegetarians make is this: they are so focused on not eating meat that many become sugar junkies. What happens when concentrated sugar enters the body? Sugar is poison, plain and simple. Your joints swell, your liver swells and your brain swells. Know

Sugar Free Vanilla Macadamia Ice Cream (You can buy a quick, easy ice cream maker at Costco for about $30) One Young Coconut (Water and flesh) 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract 2 droppers Vanilla Stevia ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ cup macadamia nuts Blend in blender, add to ice cream maker. In15 minutes you have ice cream!

Does sugar cause Diabetes? I believe so. The American Diabetes Association will tell you otherwise. The message that people hear is this: "Take your drugs and insulin, eat what you want!" The pharmaceutical companies will make an average profit of $115,000 per Diabetic patient. Drug representatives are sometimes told this — as part of their training! Many Stage 2 diabetics can reverse their disease in less than one month! Stop eating sugar. Sadly, many people can’t do it. Sugar is more addictive than cocaine. So often, diabetics would rather lose their eyesight, their feet and live in misery than stop eating the poison that continues to cause their disease. Taking drugs does not stop the disease process! I have classes you can watch on my website where I talk about sugar addiction and many tips to overcome it. Please think about your family and your children. Stop giving your children candy as a “reward.” We are stuck in patterns that need to change. Focus on limited amounts of fruit and honey. Stick to lemons, limes, avocado, strawberries and other low-sugar whole fruits. Use STEVIA, it should be your new best friend. They have flavors that taste amazing! There are even Stevia cookbooks. Sugar is a true addiction for many people. Please get help! Vaughn Lawrence is a Naturopath, Herbalist, and Nutritional Consultant. The Ashana Experience Revelations on the Musical Transformation of my Life By Sarah Grace

I

was totally enjoying my Restorative Yoga class at Darling Yoga almost two years ago when this amazing music began to play. I melted into the women’s voice while she sang Ave Maria and I found tears running down my face. The music had touched me deeply. Of course after class, I just had to discover who owned that voice. It was Ashana from her album, All IS Forgiven. Her ethereal voice was accompanied by singing crystal bowls. I came home and discovered that her exquisite music began to play the minute I came to her web site www.ashanamusic.com. I spent hours listening to all the songs I could play that day and ordered her 4 CD’s. When they arrived later that week, I listened to them whenever I was driving. Her music made me feel so calm and peaceful. What a gift! I felt like I could not get enough! Some time that year, we were offering healing classes here at Grace House. I

made my own music lists to play while we were practicing and included many of Ashana’s songs. The participants began to ask “who is that angelic voice?” With Ashana singing with her crystal bowls, the classes in QT were transforming for all. I felt as though I was on a new inner journey where my body kept attuning to the various tones of the crystal singing bowls. During that year, I also signed up for Facebook as I discovered that I could follow Ashana’s travels there. I began to post after her comments, asking her to please, please come to KC. About a year ago, I got an email, saying it was time and would I be willing to help promote her. I couldn’t believe that she was coming to the Heartland and that I would be helping. After much planning and total excitement on my part, Ashana’s concert was in Overland Park at Darling Yoga Studio last June; a full-circle event for me. She

played her 40 crystal bowls and sang to over 70 people that first night in a concert that was called A Transmission of Love To All Beings. The next night, she had an Activation for Profound Manifestation and Healing and we had a second one the next night at because of the demand. During the Activation Ceremony, we toned with Ashana and the Crystal Bowls for 2 ½ hours. I totally put my all into that evening and had an out of body experience like I have never had before. I felt like I had been taken to the very deep and grace filled space of Pure Love. No words can describe what happened to me. Before Ashana came to stay with us, my husband and I were hosting monthly gatherings and teaching classes on different healing modalities. We were watching Spiritual movies and discussing different topics. Now after Ashana, I have found that I am in a very different space; wanting much more Silence; wanting to listen only to beautiful music; wanting

more Yoga. I know that something shifted for me and I am still growing into that new inner space. I feel happy and peaceful; wanting nothing and being very grateful for the life I have created. Sarah Grace Parlak and her husband Ugur are the space holders of Grace House in southern Overland Park. Even though Sarah Grace has a very full “toolbox” it is yet to be revealed what tools she will be using in the future and for now, is very content to be living gratefully in the moment, loving what is.

A Mind-Body Approach to Understanding and Managing Chronic Pelvic Pain By Lesli Hall

A

n estimated fifteen to twenty percent of women experience the debilitating effects of chronic pelvic pain daily and the majority of these women are undiagnosed and subsequently untreated. It is a silent pain that many women feel just comes with the job of being women. Pelvic pain is not casual girl talk while having coffee with friends and is often not even discussed with a health care provider. It’s too private, too uncomfortable, to even speak. Two years ago, I had routine surgery to place mesh into my pelvic wall to hold up different parts of my anatomy that were in free fall from an eleven pound baby, a hysterectomy, and from my total ignorance about “pelvic health” as I aged. It was designed to help me stay active; but, for more than a year it catapulted me into a health crisis that impacted my life in destructive ways. Before this experience, pelvic health concerns never crossed my radar. Hopefully this story will alert women to become more informed about pelvic health and recognize symptoms they shouldn’t ignore, or, better yet, learn to be proactive about caring for all the complex integrated body systems that feed into the pelvic area. This story is for other women who are suffering. I found many of them online in my search for answers — angry women on patient forums who feel hopeless because they cannot get the relief they desperately need, not because they don’t ask, but because they don’t know how to describe their symptoms and health care providers don’t put the pieces together to make the appropriate diagnosis. My pain started two months after surgery when I should have been well on the way to recovery. I lost 20 pounds and didn’t sleep for weeks because the 24/7 pain was so insidious. There truly was never one second that my mind could focus on anything else. It was impossible to sit and I experienced severe pelvic burning as if someone had poured gasoline inside me and set it on fire. I feared that I would be this way forever. My doctor called this "catastrophizing," but, this was a personal assault on a very private part of me and it didn’t take long to fall into the hopeless victim role. Thankfully, I was referred to Dr. Charles Butrick, an Overland Park specialist who is a noted expert on female pain. My condition was diagnosed as Pelvic Floor Tension Myalgia, one of a myriad of chronic pelvic pain syndromes. It is diagnosed by the presence of hypertonic pelvic muscles that are caught in a continuous cycle of pain and spasms. Most women brace these mus-

cles further as a normal reaction to the pain and eventually there is a change in the way the brain processes these pain messages. For women diagnosed with chronic pelvic pain, their history may reveal sexual abuse, painful intercourse, endometriosis, bladder issues, childbirth problems, hysterectomy, and even--overtightening of the abdominal muscles. Symptoms may manifest as debilitating burning or throbbing vaginal, rectal, urinary, bladder or tailbone pain or a duller, constant pain that is hard to pinpoint. Sometimes, as in my case with my surgery, the syndrome develops over a lifetime of ignoring pelvic health until a tipping point is reached—the perfect pelvic storm. It’s impossible to list all the symptoms here; but, if you’re experiencing pelvic pain right now, you don’t need to see a list—you already know that something is wrong. Unfortunately, the healing process is not a quick fix. Pelvic muscles have a mind of their own and once they become hypertonic, it is hard to retrain them. I soon discovered that it would be a long process and involve substantial effort on my part. But, it IS possible. What eventually worked for me was an intricate combination of traditional medicine and holistic approaches that included mental health counseling, cognitive behavior therapy, physical therapy, stress and pain reduction tools, yoga and other self care techniques, nutritional changes and a gradual awakening to the importance of mind/body integration. I initially approached these interventions with great skepticism; but, each one filled in a piece of the pain relief puzzle that eventually put my life

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING

back together. Physical therapy was essential. I had no idea that there are PTs specifically trained to treat pelvic pain. It took me a while to realize that I had to do the healing work myself with her as a guide, and even longer to put her wisdom into practice. She encouraged me to call Dr. Jude LaClaire, a licensed holistic counselor and a specialist in neuro-behavioral pain management. I reluctantly took her advice; but, adding this to my healing regimen was a huge turning point. I then sought consultation with a naturopathic physician who made suggestions regarding supplements and diet changes to reduce inflammation and calm my sympathetic nervous system, which was seriously overloaded. Fortunately, my medical doctor encouraged and embraced my search for complementary holistic approaches. Even more fortunate is the fact that these interventions worked for me. Thankfully, the breast conversation taboo is in the past. Now it’s time to tackle the other “secret” part of our anatomy that makes us women and learn how to communicate pelvic pain with more clarity—something less vague than “it hurts you know where.” Maybe there needs to be a pelvic health awareness day when women refuse to suck in their abdomens. Until then, every woman can create her own awareness every day and build an empowerment zone over her body. My physician told me that he was proud of me for taking control and finding the unique set of interventions that moved me toward healing. Many women aren’t willing to make the life-style changes that need to be made over the long haul. I know that I will never be a low key individual with smooth relaxed muscles — but, I can be a smart woman and do the healing that needs to be done to allow myself to have a balanced life. You can, too.

The

Pursuit Happiness of

Master Guide and Teacher Babaro Channeled By Jackie Mullinax

P

eople from all walks of life are entangled in what are termed addictions. Simply put, addictions are nothing more than an attempt to balance oneself, albeit, from a lower level of awareness. Your aim is to be free of addictions; never again do you wish to be driven or bound by a force that seems to be outside of yourself and that is rarely understood. Truly, who wants the condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or involved in something of a physiological or psychological nature? The physical body has been given to you as a modality, vehicle, or tool, if you will, for you as a spiritual being to express yourself through. As a human being, you have been residing in the third dimensional awareness; being deeply rooted in the denser energies and the physicality of what the mass consciousness is creating and experiencing—the manifestations of the collective’s belief systems. However, as a spiritual being, it is your innate desire to be free of that dense energy; it doesn’t feel good to you. So you keep searching for ways to make yourself feel good—hence addictions. It is through this writing that I remind you that you have spiritual guidance with you always to assist you during your journey. We are here to show you the ways to free yourselves from all that seemingly holds you back—from realizing your true self. We wish to take your hand as you walk the earth plane and give you the knowledge that will assist you in balancing all that you are. Ask for this assistance, this knowledge for your highest good and it shall be given to you. You have chosen to use the physical experience to learn from and evolve through. Because you have been residing in the third dimension, you have been accessing that level of awareness for the purpose of balancing. Out of fear of the unknown, you have reacted to situations (instead of acting) that take you and keep you in lower emotional vibratory states. It is time for you to take responsibility for what you are and use spiritual as well as physical disciplines to balance all aspects of yourself. The awakening has begun. You are aware that you are at the apex of a specific cosmic energy cycle. Your solar system is being gifted— you are being gifted with a higher level of divine energy that is entering your aerospace and reaching the dens-

• •

est recesses of your Earth’s surface—all is affected and all is benefited greatly. With this gift, you are simultaneously being activated to accept and adapt to the higher frequencies. These frequencies are motivating you to wake up for the purpose of expanding your level of consciousness. In other words, you are in transition, going forward to a higher vibratory state. You call it going to the next dimension or a higher level of consciousness. With the activations, you are now ready to receive and use the information necessary to take you to the next level of awareness concerning what you are and how to balance all that you are in a manner that is for your highest good. Many of you have begun to feel in your heart space what your truth is and to honor that feeling! With this new awareness, you as individuals and as a collective, are guided to seek more beneficial modalities of healing and balancing. You no longer have the desire to cling to the old beliefs as they no longer serve you to your highest good. You are emerging from a deep sleep just as the butterfly emerges from her cocoon. You are moving towards a higher understanding and with this understanding you seek out healthier choices in your everyday living; this, my dear ones, is to be free from addictions. It is all quite clever how this works. You have been residing in the earth bodies for such a long time waiting for the energies to rise and to wake you from your slumber. Good morning to you! Please take these words to heart:

Get outdoors in nature every day — the Goddess

awaits your presence. Meditate — to relax the mind and be in the now— to connect to the Divine. Pray — ask God to help you in all manners. Look beyond the illusion, you are not meant to live this existence alone. Get sufficient rest. Remember you are unique; listen to your body. Eat nutritious food and drink in the proper quantities and combinations (your physical makeup will determine the best discipline). Understand that you are continually programming every aspect of you through your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Positive affirmations are a most important tool. Learn how to form positive thoughts and practice daily. A great resource is You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay. You are an energetic being and you radiate your emotional state; be ever vigilant to what you are creating. Gift yourself with the proper exercise—disciplines like yoga or tai chi are excellent practices for the mind/body. With a discipline of this sort, you are working on many levels. Both the mind/body become relaxed enabling you to have focus—you are in the Now. With these types of disciplines, the emotions stabilize and the body learns how to breathe--accepting and using a higher level of the life force. Smile! Have fun! Bring up your joy and laugh.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day” and the same is true with you. It takes desire, motivation, and discipline to change; but, it also takes the knowledge to know how to change. Please ask us to connect you to the correct people and information in order to assist you in your steps forward. Bless you always. We Are One. Addiction Through Self-Abandonment By Almine

S

elf-abandonment is always the cause of addiction. The areas of ourselves that we abandon are areas in which our resources of energy, power and life force are being siphoned off or lost. In learning how to harness and preserve our resources, we come home to ourselves and no longer need external addictions to fill the vacuum. The path of mastery is one of preserving resources in order to enhance consciousness. Choose Your Battles Wisely

Losing energy is losing power, so carefully choose your battles. The majority of battles aren’t worth fighting because the results aren’t worth having. The only thing worth fighting is the illusion that hides clarity of perception. Don’t view anything as a problem, but rather see it as a challenge that potentially holds the gift of power. The decision to engage in an outer battle is done from a place of inner stillness with no personal agenda. It is a simple law that whatever we send out comes back. If we intend harm, we open ourselves to receiving harm. The only time it is appropriate to curtail a plan or bind another is when specifically instructed by Spirit. We won’t be asked to do this unless we are free of personal agendas and not attached to outcome. The valid battles are always to release the mystery of our beingness, it may only appear to be with another. When faced with a challenge, analyze whether this battle has an underlying lesson that you need to extract. If so, does it need

to be fought now? The key is being able to cut through the drama to what is really going on. Then we can determine whether a response is needed. If the reward isn’t worth the output of energy, we don’t enter the battle. If we haven’t developed enough skill, it would be inappropriate and possibly dangerous to take on certain tyrants. The best choice may be to turn away. Making the decision to engage is like being an ocean surfer: we see which waves are ours and which are not; we don’t ride every wave. The challenge is seeing behind the appearances of the problems that arise in our life. When we see the lesson that the problems bring, it alters our perception and perception yields power. Things that Drain Energy Identifying debilitating patterns that cause energy leaks is crucial. We find these patterns by watching for knee-jerk reactions. Following are some potential problem areas to check. Relationships Relationships that no longer hold a lesson can drain energy so we need to assess which ones are genuinely serving us. We are either expanding or contracting at all times. If someone makes us contract, discern whether he or she has a lesson. If not, release the relationship and move on. If they do have a lesson to offer, the highest choice is to welcome the challenge because if we ignore it, it will manifest in another relationship. Have you noticed repetitive patterns in relationships?

The only way to break the pattern is to embrace the insights the challenges yield. Co-dependent relationships cause a huge loss of energy. This is when we are trying to control others or trying to please them. We attempt to control others when we fear change and are desperately trying to make someone fit into our world view. We attempt to please others when we allow their expectations to determine our actions. An example is every time our mother comes over, we work extra hard because the little girl inside wants approval. Not only do we desire to control others and the environment, but we also spend a lot of time trying to ‘relate to’ events and people. For example, if we see a toy in a garage sale, we may say, “I had one of those.” If we hear a song we say, “I wish I could sing beautifully,” or “I can sing better than he can.” This habit reinforces the separatism of ego. If we gained our lessons and set boundaries with difficult people in our lives, and they continue to breach our boundaries, it is appropriate to release these people – even bloodline family members. It is ok to choose a new family that vibrates harmoniously with who we are. Others are waiting to play the role of being our mother, father, sibling or grandparent, who will do so from a loving and healthy position.

Drugs Drugs prevent us from feeling pain, but they also prevent us from accessing light. People who use drugs, including narcotics and marijuana, have a thick grayish mucous in their etheric body that hangs around the head and over the heart. Heavy drugs can also cause distortion in the mental bodies. People who have used marijuana a long time or heavy-duty drugs even a few times, have overactive adrenal glands. This pushes them into a constant state of anxiety because the body interprets the spurts of adrenaline as a response to fear. They then use more drugs to calm themselves. Continued drug abuse causes the adrenal system to become dominant, when the goal is to have the pituitary system and the heart center to be dominant because that is the natural condition when we are in balance. A fully functioning pituitary gland provides us with visions and insight.

Ordinary Things Everyday ordinary items and interactions can adversely interfere with our energy fields and physiology. The following things weaken our auric field and make it perme-

Noise Noise pulls us out of the present moment and pushes us into a state of imbalance. It is essential that we have silence. When we are in a place of silence the heart chakra

able by lower-level beings or negative energy. • Alcohol • Electric blankets, radio towers and fans • Microwaves, TVs and cell phones • Sex with a partner that vibrates at a lower energetic level • Unresolved emotional and mental conflicts

opens. It also enables us to connect with the primordial earth (a time prior to man-made noises), which is very healing. Noise is increasing tenfold every 20 years. It has become so insidious that many people aren’t aware that they are constantly bombarded. Take note of your environment and see if you can acquire more silence. Check your refrigerator and the heating system. Are fans running? Does your computer beep or talk to you? Does the car signal you with jingles and blares? Those disconnected from their sub-personalities cannot stand silence. They enter a room or get in the car and immediately turn on the TV, radio or stereo. They go into the wilderness and take along music, claiming they don’t want to become bored. In actuality, they want a distraction so they don’t have to face the emptiness that silence might reveal. Surprise Surprise drains energy. The unexpected and the unknown can pull us out of balance, so we need to approach things with equanimity. When presented with the unexpected, role-play and act as ‘as if’ we already know, even when baffled. We merely form a hypothesis stating, “This might be true,” and then we wait. This is a stalling technique to gain the time to center ourselves, see behind the appearances and discern whether action is needed. This is developing an attitude that enables us to constantly guard our energy so we are less likely to be preyed upon by those who wish to steal it. Everything requires energy, so it is the most sought after commodity in the universe. Words We cannot define ourselves by who we have been. We must define ourselves by who we are becoming and we are becoming masters of light. Consequently, we cannot insult the god and goddess within by saying derogatory things: “I am poor at math; I am scared of mice; or I am terrible with managing money. “ That was yesterday – redefine yourself today. All knowledge is within us. All talents are within us. All beauty. All power.

In learning how to harness and preserve our resources, we come home to ourselves and no longer need external addictions to fill the vacuum. The path of mastery is one of preserving resources in order to enhance consciousness.

Watch your words and only speak those that reflect who you are. (A good rule is to never follow the words “I am” with anything negative – including the word, ‘sorry.’) Self-Reflection If we are obsessing about the what, why and how of every thought and action: we are indulging ourselves. This places us in a weakened state. Obsessing about the questions brings the baggage of the past moment into this moment, meaning we aren’t traveling lightly enough to do the powerful work of transformation. For example, if you are traveling 70 mph in bumper-tobumper rush hour traffic and a truck attempts to sideswipe your car, you jerk the steering wheel to the left and barely squeeze between two automobiles in the fast lane. The few seconds following the incident are critically important. If you fall into self-reflection and say, “Wow, that could have been a serious accident. That man was trying to kill me!” and continue to mull it over, you are losing too much energy. Therefore, you won’t be prepared for the next moment. Twenty seconds later, he does it again. Are you centered and ready to respond masterfully, or are you still shaken and feeling afraid? Which state you are in may determine whether you survive the second attempt. Self-reflection includes feeling sorry for ourselves: nobody pays any attention to me; my boss doesn’t know how valuable I am and nobody understands me. The other aspect is giving ourselves labels and comparing ourselves to others. With comparisons, if we say we are less than another, it is worshipping another’s arrogance. We strengthen ourselves by embracing life with awareness in the

moment. This causes the energy around our bodies to radiate outward. The self-centered person constantly engaged in self-reflection, bends these energy lines inward. This causes decay and eventual death. A Master is Self-Referring A master is self-referring for his approval, so he doesn’t react to other’s words or actions. He knows not to expect approval from the majority. Society lives by tradition and world views. In fact, society is a society because of its attachment to those world views. A master has released these views and so society rejects him. Conditioned Life vs Unconditioned Life

causes and results Has a fossilized consciousness that doesn’t flow. Rigid consciousness blocks energy. Accesses reality through world views and social conditioning, so life is full of ruts and habits.

The Person Living an Unconditioned Life • Accepts life moment by moment as it comes, without expectations • Allows the future to come to them, realizing that a planned future is a closed one • Accepts the validity of all paths • Realizes their life path is determined by working together with the Higher Self. The will of Higher Self/Source becomes their will. • Is spontaneous and innovative • Possesses a fluid consciousness that draws in energy by becoming new each moment • Doesn’t require much energy to sustain, therefore, people stay young and rejuvenated • Accesses reality through insights gained from experiences, so life reveals itself anew every moment.

The ‘conditioned life’ cannot grow beyond certain limits because it is imprisoned by world views and social conditioning. It is better to strive for an ‘unconditioned life’ because it conserves energy. This energy is now available to us and can be used to access the non-cognitive information of right brain, which reveals the unknown, and eventually, the unknowable. The Person Living a Conditioned Life • Has fixed expectations as to what life should be • Anticipates and attempts to determine the future • Is trapped by defending their world view’s validity • Believes their life path is determined by social conditioning. They pretend to search for truth when in actuality they are searching for that which reinforces their existing beliefs. • Depends on predetermined

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) – It’s time to pursue activities and goals that you’ve been putting off. It’s important to have fun! The word “recreation” means to re-create yourself and your energy. When you play, you’re able to do better work when you go back to your tasks. Promise that you will prioritize an enjoyable outing you’ve been eager to do — and follow through! Tell a trusted friend who will keep you on course. Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) – This is a great business month! Put yourself out there with no hesitation or shyness. You’ll be amazed at the praise and positive feedback you get. You could even have a new job offer. Relationships will also improve because of your inner confidence and poise. Because you are in a new consciousness, you’ll notice you’re drawn to new people and activities. Let this happen and don’t cling to the past. Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) – Put extra emphasis on meditation and inner reflection this month. The Universe wants to reveal old emotional patterns that need to be swept out of your subconscious mind. These old ideas could be about parents or childhood authority figures that are holding back business success. Connect with your soul to find your power and you’ll gain new self-respect and confidence. Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) – Spiritually, you often bounce from concept to concept. This month, dedicate yourself to one set of ideas. You’ll see that you need to develop trust. Every Path contains enlightenment, but you’ve got to have the faith to be uncomfortable as you are growing. Don’t “abandon ship” when things feel challenging. You’ll also see this trait mirrored in your relationships. Romantic intimacy is like spiritual intimacy in many ways. Stay present to any discomfort and let the breakthrough happen! Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) – Like your Sagittarius friends, you’re dealing with issues of trust and intimacy. For you, the challenge is letting go of control. Surrendering to another is frightening because you’ve likely never be able to depend on anyone, even as a child. Meditate to let go of control – even if you feel fear. Let people know how vulnerable you feel. They will see the hidden

strength that lies in your honesty. That will help you create deeper bonds. Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) – You could be feeling edgy because you’re pushing yourself without a break. Make sure you’re eating regular meals (that are healthy!) and getting enough rest. Even if you feel too busy to meditate, you can always take a few deep breaths to center yourself spiritually and emotionally. Your distractedness can cause confusion in your relationship. Let your partner know you feel scattered, so you don’t seem neglectful or callous. Meditating together, even if it’s a short walk in nature, can help retain closeness. Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) – You often make yourself more anxious than you need to be. When you’re feeling off-center, take care of physical needs right away. Eat some healthy food, even just a little. Take deep breaths and connect with your spiritual guides – you’re never alone! You might even be starting a new relationship and your fears of failing can keep you from enjoying delightful present moments. Don’t let fear rob you of happiness! Aries (March 21 – April 19) – It’s good to think about how you’re spending your time. Do your friends and activities truly represent who you are? Can you depend on these people? You might be ready to evaluate your life and make sure you have people you can trust who are in alignment with your spiritual goals. You might even take a stand with a relative. It’s important that you can be your authentic self with the majority of people around you. Taurus (April 20 – May 20) – Watch out for expressing yourself too forcefully. The problem with being a Taurus is you don’t say anything and let tension build up until you explode. It’s not fair to people around you. Let others know your opinions and boundaries before you get angry. Not only will your home life improve, but your business life as well. You tend not to share inspired ideas that might be different from others. But those are the concepts that will make you successful! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) – Meditation is not the easiest thing for you! But you need the mental and emotional serenity it offers. Open your concepts of traditional meditation. Try taking a walk and being aware of nature around you. Experiment with yoga or tai chi. Ask a spiritually minded friend to be your “meditation buddy”, and plan on talking about your experiences every few days. Keep it simple and trust that your soul is evolving. Cancer (June 21 – July 22) – Energetic and independent Mars is in your sign. You might feel inspired to make changes, start new projects, or begin new relationships. Mars is also about anger, so beware of irritability and moodiness. This is especially true with close partnerships. The Universe is pushing you to a deeper level of intimacy, and being irksome is a way of trying to make the other person back off. Take a deep breath, trust the process and go forward with courage instead of defensiveness.

Include photo or logo, name, brief description and contact info. Will be edited to fit four lines. Due by the 15th of the month. $75 for three months, $120 for six months or $180 for a full year— or 1/2 price with a current display ad. Must be prepaid. Contact jill@evolvingmagazine.com.
