Publisher’s Letter...
Contents Dear Friend,
The Spiritual Practice of True Community
By now we’ve all most likely heard the phrase, “Like Attracts Like.” But have we also considered that, “Like Creates Like?” For example, I’m in the middle of reading Dr. Daniel Amen’s book, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life. While pondering this month’s theme of Creating Community, I remembered how Dr. Amen mentioned that we become like those with whom we associate. So when we spend time with health-conscious, climate-conscious, politically involved, or other positively-motivated people, we create a similar reality for ourselves. By spending time with like-minded people, we become similar in interests, values, and life expression. And we enhance their growth process in return. In the recovery environment, a popular saying is that to grow, “You have to change your playthings, playmates, and playground to change your future.” I'm reminded of the fact that in some spiritual communities, the members have agreed upon the direction of how the community should grow and even what the activities of the children might entail. So as the writers take a look this month at what it means to create a sense of community, I encourage you to also consider your current environment and whether it enhances your ability to create your most powerful, vital life.

Melanie Nolker’s ‘The Gleaner’ was inspired by a friend of mine who, despite chronic back pain, donates her time and effort with a local organization called 'After The Harvest’. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit food rescue agency that gleans leftover vegetables and fruit from fields after a harvest. This food is then donated to agencies that feed the hungry and poor people in the Kansas City area. “I attempted to bring it to life with oil paints and a palette knife,” Nolker said. The Science of Mastering Sleep
BY SIFU MATTHEW
As a society, we are trained to move forward with fervor: grasp the next idea; improve at rapid paces to achieve; maintain beauty, fitness, and wealth -- and compete at all costs. Striving at this rapid continuum can secretly deplete our invaluable body chemical stores and, while we may not be aware of it happening for months and sometimes years, our body and its wisdom will come crashing down and leave us in a stressful and sleepless paradigm, chasing desperate measures to find quick solutions that can damage our systems even more.
From a standing position, place the right back of your hand behind your back on the spine and the left hand toward the earth like a spear. Hold this position for 5 to 10 minutes and breathe through the nose and all of your bones. Do even breaths of 4 seconds in, 4 seconds hold and 4 seconds out.

THE CORE OF STRESS AND SLEEP DEFICIENCY
Your body is designed to sleep and rest, as well as to gather massive amounts of minerals and elements that it receives during the non-active external moving periods. The minerals and elements are gathered through the earth's magnetic pull while the body is in a lying, receptive, and unstressed position. The heart and bones together serve as a dynamic means to absorb both electricity and minerals-- and store them for use the next day, as well as for upcoming periods of greater need. Both stress and sleep are electromagnetic reactions that occur based on your ability to balance your magnetic field with the forces and fields around you. Heal Tech-Neck– Hold your Head High
BY SUZETTE SCHOLTES
A
s I walked into the chiropractor’s office, a young man sat with his head dropped forward, his neck red and inflamed. The teen was suffering from tech neck. Most think this is common for the older folks but appears to spare no one these days. Just how much load does that constant downwardlooking gaze put on the neck muscles? When your spine is in neutral position, the head weighs about 10-12 pounds. At 15 degrees forward, the neck sees 27 pounds. At 45 degrees, it sees 49 pounds. That’s a lot of weight stress on muscles and nerves that are meant to handle 10-12 pounds of stress, and that much load can do a lot of damage over time. Not only that, you get wearImage andlicensed tear on spine, bythe Ingram Images Image licensed by Ingram Images even developing tears within the disc, or even get a slipped or herniated disc. There may be tingling or numbing down the arm and into the hands. To put this in perspective, imagine holding a 10pound weight in your hand. Now hold that for an hour, which is not a far stretch for how long we look at devices. Now exchange the weight for a 60-pound dumbbell. Most people would only last for a few minutes, yet we demand our neck muscles to do this for hours on a daily basis. Most people display subtle signs of tech neck—like soreness or stiffness at the end of the day—before it really becomes an issue. But those same subtle signs Image licensed by Ingram Images are the ones that often get dismissed or ignored until they become bigger issues. How Does Climate Change Affect You?
T
here is no controversy in the scientific community about global warming and the subsequent climate change. According to the NASA website, “Observations throughout the world make it clear that climate change is occurring and rigorous scientific research demonstrates that the greenhouse gases emitted by human activities are the primary driver.” The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states, “Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal.” As a mental health professional, I am concerned about how this environmental change is affecting each of us emotionally and socially. I also wonder how each of us will respond to this information. It turns out I am not the only one asking this question. Doctors Janet Yang and Lee Ann Kahlor, professors at UT, Austin, conducted a study about why many Americans, though believing global warming is happening (sixty-two percent) don’t seem to know why climate change is occurring (forty-nine percent). Yang and Kahlor found that those who had negative feelings toward climate change like fear, depression, and anxiety actively sought more information about it. They also saw climate change as having serious risks and considered their current knowledge about it insufficient. Those driven by positive affect toward climate change with emotional states marked by hopefulness, excitement, and happiness actively avoided exposure to additional information on the issue. They also thought climate change presented little risk to nature and humans and believed they had sufficient information.
BY JUDE LACLAIRE, PH.D.
Yang and Kahlor also found that the social environment has the potential to strongly influence whether we seek or avoid climate change information. This, the researchers say, is because we are often around people who agree with us about important issues, reinforce our perception of risk, and support or discourage further action. The Yale Center for Climate Change Communication in a survey on science and risk communication found that Communitarians and Egalitarians believed and supported action on climate change. Hierarchists and Individualists tended to deny and oppose action. Those who were worried, interested, or hopeful were more inclined to take action and those who reacted with fear might take no action. So, you might be asking yourself, “How am I responding emotionally to this environmental shift?” You may also be wondering what you can do to take action. I suggest two channels of action. One is for your personal sense of security and happiness and the other is about your contribution to the environmental issues. Both will help your brain produce feel-good hormones. Alex Korb, Ph.D., in his book The Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression One Small Change at a Time, suggests four things we can do to change the brain chemistry of fear, worry, depression, and anxiety into feelings of well-being, security, and hope: Gratitude: Ask yourself, “What am I grateful for?”
Name it: describing the emotions helps reduce it. Power of touch: hugs, a pat on the back, even a handshake, or a massage can lift your mood. Make a decision: choosing a path of action. Along with many others, I have found that supporting groups that help people and the environment with the effects of climate change makes my worry and depression change to hopefulness. Some of the organizations that give great information and take political action are: The Sierra Club, The Nature Conservancy, Friends of the Earth, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and the Organic Consumers Association. Some local groups that reach out to those in need are Heart to Heart International, Harvesters, and the American Red Cross. There are other organizations dedicated to helping refugees displaced by war and natural disasters. Where are you in this process? Think about what you can do to face the facts, calm yourself, and take action for others and the environment! Jude LaClaire, Ph.D., LCPC, is a counselor, educator, and author. How to Incorporate Crystals into Your Daily Life
C
rystals are a ubiquitous staple in metaphysical and new-age stores and now they are coming to chain stores across the country. You can even find them in some health food stores next to the essential oils and incense. More and more, people are learning about the beneficial effects of these stones, not to mention their beauty. Once you are convinced that you want to start incorporating crystals into your life, what do you do next? How can you use the vibrational energy of these stones to improve your daily life? What do you actually do with these pretty stones?
Carry Small Stones You know those small stones that are usually in bowls at metaphysical stores but you may also remember them from museum gift stores from when you were a kid—those are pocket stones, little crystals that you can easily place, guess where…in your pocket. Pocket stones are an economical way to break into the crystal world. These stones usually only cost a few dollars and are easy to acquire. You can simply pick out a few stones that you feel drawn to and carry them in your pocket to help their vibrational energy influence you throughout the day. In addition to your pocket, these stones also work nicely to help boost the vibration of your cars or any physical location. When you get stressed out in traffic

jams, picking up a small piece of rose quartz may help to feminine power. How about birth stone ring that your calm you and allow those loving vibrations to move grandma gave you? The stone likely has some helpful through your body. vibrations that you can bring into your life.
Meditate with Crystals
Crystals as Home Decor
Another way you can utilize those small pocket stones, or the bigger palm stones, is to hold the stones you feel drawn to during your standard meditation practice. Meditating with the stones will also allow you to start to open up and feel the different energies or vibrations that these stones carry. Simply concentrate on the stones and see what happens! If you use a mala or prayer beads during your meditation practice, you can also incorporate the energy of crystals through these pieces. These items have become popular with crystal fanatics, and you can find almost any variety of crystal you are looking for made into a mala.
A fun way to brighten up the aesthetics and atmosphere of any room is by placing larger crystals as decorative pieces. These crystals do not need to cost a fortune. Even if you are not near a new-age shop, you can now find them at many home stores. Just take a stroll through the decorative section of your favorite store and see if you can find large chunks of amethyst or agate for sale. I have found that even having a small bowl of pocket stones in the bathrooms will help to bring up the energy and add some flair to a sometimes forgotten space. You can stick with one type of crystal or mix it up with your favorite colors. See if your guests compliment your new decorating style the next time they stop by. Whether you are drawn to small crystals or big crystals, you can find a place to incorporate them and their soothing energies into your life!
Crystal Jewelry One of my favorite ways to incorporate the energy of crystals into my life is through jewelry. You can find crystals in necklaces, earnings, bracelets, rings, and even cuff links. When you wear a crystal, it allows their energy to be with you throughout the day. You probably already have some popular crystals in your jewelry box. Do you have a necklace made with rubies? You can wear that to help increase your sense of

’d heard from my fellow foodies that Vivilore, couched in Independence’s Englewood district, was a find. Once my curiosity got the better of me I planned a mid-day adventure at summer’s end. The ivy-laced brick building with a relatively unassuming façade is housed in the former SermonAnderson interior design/antique business. It’s now transformed into quite the experience. Be prepared to be blown away. The interior has been completely renovated by Whit Ross and his sister, Cindy Foster, two Independence natives both deciding to surround guests with vintage pickings including antiques and retail. It’s an understatement to say the intimate decor is lavishly executed. Even the oversized murals, replicates by John Singer Sargent, look appropriate. The question is whether to shop, eat, or be bowled over by the interior or backyard’s tropical paradise. Weather permitting, ensconce in the courtyard gardens, expertly maintained by Ross and Foster. Almost obscured by the profusion of greenery and flowers, gazing balls, statuary, and stonework, my attention was squarely on the plantings and not the

Though menus change frequently offerings include, a variety of sandwiches, lobster rolls, and Mediterranean chicken salad, New Mexican Pork Chop (with creamy polenta cake), grilled chicken breast with corn pudding and feta salsa. There’s also ribeye, herb crusted beef tenderloin and a wild mushroom cheesecake, seafood and avocado tostadas, barbecue oysters with blue cheese sauce and pickled onions. Where else are you going to find barbecue oysters within 200 miles? The results: beautiful food and beautiful gardens. Example, the salad wasn’t just heirloom tomatoes and downy mozzarella. Ross took it a step further and embellished it with strawberries, blackberries, red onion, sage and vivid sweet pea blossoms. “My background is cooking,” Ross said, “and my sister was a pilot. It means the accumulated knowledge of life and how to live it,” says Cindy noting the book is on the table in the foyer to peruse. If this is the way Foster and Ross see the world, then navigating guests into sensory delight is obviously uppermost. Vivilore is one of those places that transports; and, yes, it’s worth the drive.

The Spiritual Practice of True Community BY NIÁNN EMERSON CHASE
T
hink of each individual as being like a book, composing a life in chapters, writing his or her own history (or “herstory”). Some books are thicker than others, with more pages, chapters, and sections because of past repersonalizations or past lives while other books are thinner due to just beginning to write their story as they live their first-time lives. There are many ways of moving into spiritual enlightenment, for we are all unique individuals, and true religious experiences can occur in innumerable and diverse ways. This spirit birthing that we mortals experience is an evolvement from our lower selves with roots in the levels of “fight or flight” reactions to our higher selves that are increasingly more linked with the living spiritual forces and circuits of love-based responses. Spiritual unfoldment is ascension from a materialcontrolled nature to a spirit-controlled nature. It is a movement towards fusion with God within us. Based on my experience as co-founder of the spiritual-based community of Global Community Communications Alliance, I am convinced that the process of true community building is a spiritual birthing process, a conscious and
committed one for each individual as well as for the group as a whole. In introducing Dr. Scott Peck’s model for the process of becoming a true community as presented in his book, A World Waiting to be Born, I will include his perception of what the process is in mainstream society of the dominant culture, the “third dimension,” and the building and expanding of a “fourth-dimensional” culture such as that of Global Community Communications Alliance. First of all, what is true community? Dr. Peck’s definition of a true community is: A group of individuals who have learned how to communicate honestly with each other, whose relationships go deeper than their masks of composure, and who have developed some significant commitment to rejoice together, mourn together, and to delight in each other, to make other’s conditions their own. According to Dr. Peck, creating community is not just people coming together in what we would call an “intentional community”—living together, owning property together, and growing together. A “community” can also be a corporation of people in business working together. It can be a school; it can be a church; it can be any organization—secular or religious. A community can be a group of people living in a neighborhood. What makes a community is a group of people who come together for a common purpose. In this model of thirddimensional community, Dr. Peck speaks of four stages of the community-building process. These stages, listed in order of progression, are: First, beginning stage - pseudo community Second stage - chaos Third stage - emptying, letting go
Pseudo Community In pseudo community, the focus is on what people in the group have in common—the “we” stage. Usually when people desire to form some level of community they are initially very enthusiastic and have a strong appreciation of the idea of unity and togetherness. They start out optimistic and excited about their focus on creating community. In this “courting” stage the dominating dynamic is a desire to avoid all conflict—fixing things, making things better, smoothing over areas of potential conflict and differences. At the pseudo community stage there is a denial of any differences in individuals, in goals, and in ideas. There is a denial that there are any problems or that there is anything wrong. There are a lot of good manners, courtesy, and pretense, a lot of wearing of masks. A long time ago I came to the realization that good manners can sometimes be our biggest enemy because maintaining manners regardless of the situation can perpetuate dishonesty with each other; being polite no matter the circumstances encourages people to continue wearing masks when sometimes maybe they should be a little more honest and confront each other instead of pretending. If a group of people ever get to the point where they really do begin to see that there are some problems, that everything is not perfect and not going just right, and if they do not run away from the problems, or do not want to “fix it” by covering the issues up or sweeping them under the rug, then individuals or a group in general begin to move into the next stage which is chaos. Remember that this can be applied to individuals as well as to a group.

It is possible to graduate into a community that is more fourthdimensional than third-dimensional. I want to use Scott Peck’s definition of true community, but I want to expand on it. Though Dr. Peck has graduated from this world, his dream of true community building is alive and well in many people. ews of the Women's March, planned for Saturday, January 21, 2017, spread across Facebook like wildfire. I first planned to go to Washington D.C., but after searching for an affordable hotel room or Air BnB and coming up empty, I decided my efforts would be better utilized closer to home. I evaluated the best way to make an impact with the movement and discovered the perfect way to expend my energy expressing Self, Home/Family, School, Community, City, State, Country, World. As a busy mom who is self-employed, I had to prioritize my focus and work with my energy in a way that was sustainable and collaborative. Five days before the March, I contacted the organizers of the event and asked if I could create a "pop-up" Goddess Temple on site and invoke the Great Mother at the beginning of the March. Unbelievably, they said YES to the Temple! They welcomed me to offer an Opening Prayer and Call the Directions just outside the Temple before the Women’s March began. Saturday morning, my little brother, my daughter, and one of my priestesses-in-training arrived super early to the downtown location where the March would begin. We got to work, each of us contributing to this community effort. We set up an altar at the back of the Temple featuring one of our most ancient Goddesses, Inanna, nestled on an elevated platform, the table draped in a rich purple and gold altar cloth. Tall, thin, wooden praying priestesses flanked the centerpiece with candles shining across the surface. At another table, we created a cleansing station with holy water that I blessed and scented with essential oils designed to clear the energetic field. A ceramic pot with fragrant dried lavender and cedar sat ready with the feathers used to smudge people. Another station displayed instructions to use Flying Wish paper to write intentions, prayers, and wishes and set them on fire, watching them burn and float magically into the air, leaving only wisps of ash! After hanging strands of jewels and placing a Welcome sign out front, we were ready to circle up and call on Spirit. A circle of women and men, mothers and daughters, gathered for prayer. I asked a friend to help us sing the Cheyenne Water Blessing song that many sang during the Dakota Access Pipeline protest. My friend had asked how we in Kansas City could support their efforts and they said, “Sing our prayers with your people.” We drummed and sang then prayed together for the leadership in our country and around the world. We prayed for the hearts and the conscious minds of all of our leaders. Then we sang to each Direction and called each Element while casting a circle of Love. I was so overcome feeling the presence of Spirit that I half-cried, half-sang the Call. After all seven directions were called, we vibrated with so much energy, I was shaking! A friend suggested we give all that energy to the crowd and we

We talked with hundreds of people about the Goddess that day and helped mothers with their children to light their wishes. We prayed with people, sang with people, cried with people...we couldn’t help but ask ourselves, “What would it be like to have an actual Goddess Temple?” Forty percent of Americans describe themselves as spiritual but not religious. Communities are leaving churches in droves as people seek a more authentic connection with their spirits, faith, and something greater than themselves. We know that our current modern culture and pace does not support peaceful, soul -centered living. People are more stressed, more anxious, more depressed, and more isolated than ever before. How would our lives be different if we had a place to congregate with one another, showing up soul-to -soul, heart-to-heart, in our personal spiritual truth? How would our children feel, supported by a community of women of all ages, sharing their life wisdom in the way our grandmothers used to? How would the mothers feel, knowing they are not isolated and alone in the challenges of mothering but lovingly held by wise women mentoring them through various

Spiritual Horoscope
June 2017 Happy birthday, Gemini! It’s an amazing creative month. Meditate on how thoughts create your reality. Become aware of every thought you think and word you say to bring attention to what you’re creating. Breakthrough insights remove prosperity blocks so you suddenly make more money. You can begin a new relationship or have a deep healing in a current one. Don’t punish yourself for negative thoughts since the patterns are stubborn! Simply notice them, and then clearly change your mental direction and observe exciting shifts. Cancer (June 21 – July 22) Powerful, confident, energetic Mars moves into your sign! It’s time to take action on your dreams! Meditate and see yourself in your new life circumstances and dwell on how it feels to be that new you. Forgive old resentments from the last two years (a Mars cycle) so they don’t deplete your energy and enthusiasm — also let go of fears that clutter your mind. Commit to your particular spiritual practice and marry the inner world of future vision with outer actions and you’ll be unstoppable!
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Relationship challenges? Meditate on subconscious anger interfering with intimacy. It’s like scum rising to the top of a pond. You can skim off the sludge as you allow thoughts, beliefs, and memories to rise up in meditation. Don’t judge that things feel negative or not blissful. Examine, forgive, and have closure with what arises from your depths so you can have the loving, trusting connections you so desire. You’ll be alert to negative patterns and be able to stop them. Now you can create new communication and understanding in present and future bonds.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) Jupiter moves direct this month, after four months of retrograde! You’ll have increases in finances—as well as insights as to how you sometimes block the flow of abundance. Jupiter also brings selfesteem, so be aware how you fend off compliments from others and the many ways you pick on yourself! Also, reject limiting economic beliefs, and focus on spiritual prosperity principles. Relationships improve as you become
realistic in your expectations and release perfectionism. Ironically, as you do that, things will seem perfect!
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) Jupiter moves direct in your sign, bringing abundance, joy, and harmony! You can start a new relationship, get a cool high paying job, or just feel awesome about being you! You can easily resolve embittered issues with people. Meditate and see those old problems in a bubble of light and visualize them floating away. It’s the start a new 12 year cycle, so be conscious about what you’re bringing ahead with you and which beliefs and perceptions you’re leaving behind. Get excited about creating a wonderful, fulfilling life that you nourish with positive thoughts, feelings and actions!
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) It’s a great time to develop your intuition! Any constant spiritual practice, from yoga to prayer to meditation to chanting, etc, will open your mind to deeper wisdom. The clear guidance you get in touch with heals relationships, even if there is trauma associated with your own history of bonding. And even small things that have added up to burden your heart can be cleared away. You’ll also have insights into patterns that cause financial issues, so prosperity flows unimpeded!
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) If partnered, focus on positive qualities s/he has. Make sure you communicate your observations rather than just think about them. This sparks deeper trust and intimacy. If single, forgive past loves and pick out the good things you remember about those people.

Expanding the fulfilling aspects in your mind can draw a wonderful new connection to you! Also, make time for friends and activities so you feel reinvigorated in the present moment and optimistic about future options.
help set realistic goals. You’ll see problems in your life clearly so you come to quick solutions and get positive results. Also, unexpected financial abundance can come in!
Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19)
As lucky, happy Jupiter turns direct, you’ll have a great relationship month! If single you can meet a wonderful new partner. If already bonded, you can have healing and forgiveness that renews your love and deepens you feeling of connection. It’s also a great money month! Everything comes together by tapping into your intuition. Just a bit of meditation or quiet time each day draws in the right people and circumstances. You’ll also have awesome ideas that lead to successful results!
Jupiter, the planet of new opportunities, financial abundance, and joy, moves direct this month and brings you awesome job prospects! You could get a new position, a major pay increase, or be noticed by prominent people. In your daily life, focus on finding joy in everything you do. Gratitude opens the door to new relationships or to passion and healing in a current one. Your meditations are more profound right now, so enjoy that bliss and take action on insights your intuition supplies.
Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) As an Aquarius, you’re brilliant, but your mind works overtime! Your meditation or yoga practice is wonderful, yet it’s crucial to also soothe your thinking in an ongoing way. A few times a day, close your eyes and picture your brain like a tight fist. Breathe in gently, then exhale slowly and fully while imagining that fist relaxing it’s grip. You’ll feel tension release in your head and experience a sense of serenity. Even one moment of mental peace enhances your relationships, energy level, health, and work efficiency. You might also say silently or aloud, “Shhhhhhh”. Do it gently and compassionately, without judgment or criticism. Effortless genius will flow in this way, without mental struggle!
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Neptune, your ruling planet, turns retrograde. This can be a time of deep intuitive awareness, quick spiritual growth, and beautiful closeness with others. Meditation helps you develop compassion for yourself, and increase self-love. You can also forgive others more easily so relationships improve. Jupiter direct combines with Neptune to

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Venus is your ruling planet and is in your sign this month, bringing love, harmony, and abundance! The planet Jupiter is also brings cool job opportunities, so that work feels meaningful as well as fun. If you’ve had weird health issues, they can resolve. Just watch out for overeating since both Jupiter and Venus are indulgent! Meditate on affirmations, knowing that whatever you can visualize as possible is possible! Ask for support from positive people to keep you focused on your dreams.
