ach morning when I wake, I spend quiet time writing in my journal and contemplating the day to come. I am thankful, in advance, for the opportunities the day may bring. Before bed, I reflect on the day and express gratitude for the abundance that filled my day. No matter what minute stresses may have occurred, there is always reason for thanks. Everyday Spirituality, the theme for this premiere issue of Evolving Santa Fe, is expressed in numerous, humble, and simple ways in our lives. I personally spend time in nature. I reflect. I am thankful. I garden, cook and take walks as forms of meditation. I serve others. In every decision I make, I keep the highest good in mind. I am conscious of my words and never make excuses. For me, all of this is Everyday Spirituality—living a simple yet fulfilling path. Sometimes in the busy-ness of life, I forget for a moment; but then I gently remind myself of my path. This month we launch a second edition of Evolving magazine into the Santa Fe area. It’s scary. It’s titillating. It’s exhausting and joyful and so very fulfilling. During these busiest of times is when I most need to remember my everyday spiritual practices. It’s what keeps me in focus and keeps the journey full-filled instead of lack-filled. I hope you’ll join us on this journey. In 1994, as an outgrowth of experiences in my life, I started Evolving Woman in Kansas City. My father had recently passed and I began seeing a counselor, wanting—needing—to know that there was more to life. I started journaling, reading self-help and spirituality books, exploring my inner reality. I wished there was a publication that offered these topics: enlightenment, self-actualization, health, wellness, and joyful living. So it is with much joy that we bring the Santa Fe area its own edition of Evolving. I wanted to branch into other cities but had yet to find the perfect person to create it in their area. Then I met Devon. I visited Santa Fe in January this year for an unrelated travel-writing trip. Devon contacted me and I told him quite honestly, “Santa Fe is known as a spiritual mecca. There must be numerous publications like Evolving.” He convinced me otherwise, and stated that the local community was hungry for its own spiritual magazine. So here it is. And with Devon as your local contact, I am assured that it will thrive. He has the same vision and work ethic so crucial to creating a sustainable, life-enriching publication. Our ethics and standards are high. You, our reader, are our top priority in determining what articles, events, advertising and news are contained herein. The articles in both the Santa Fe and Kansas City magazines will focus on the same themes each month. But, each issue is individual to its area. All of the events, news and monthly columnists are local. It will be with much joy, indeed, that we will offer two magazines, each so similar, but yet unique to its local flavor. Enjoy this Santa Fe print edition, then if you’re still wanting more, you can go online to our website and read the Kansas City issue there. Our mission is to educate, enlighten and inspire, while helping create community. Please stay in touch. Leave comments on the articles online, send a message with what you’d like included or just say hello. I’m so very grateful for the opportunity to branch into your glorious city. And for that, today, I am thankful.
J
ill Dutton founded Evolving Kansas City in 1994 as Evolving Woman magazine. Acutely tuned in to her readers, Jill changed the name and the focus of the magazine in 2009. They weren’t just women and they weren’t just trying to find that whole life-work balance. They were searching, seeking. They were eager to grow, or get better, to be better and improve and, well, evolve. So when Jill asked me earlier this year about the prospect of starting a likeminded publication—one covering spirituality and healing and alternative health—here in Santa Fe, I was immediately drawn to the idea. After all, Santa Fe is the epicenter of all things spiritual and alternative. It’s what draws people here. This is the Land of Enlightenment. And people here will not only love a publication devoted entirely to these topics, but they will nurture it and assure its longevity. Evolving Santa Fe will feature stories by and about people here in Santa Fe and surrounding areas. In every issue will be stories by and about healers, masseuses, spiritual practitioners, hypnotherapists, Reiki masters, alternative health experts, body workers, Buddhists, Naturopaths, conscious beings, masters in energetics—in short, all the people for which Santa Fe is renowned but who've rarely received the attention and coverage they deserve. Santa Fe is ready for Evolving, for sure. But I feel that it also needs Evolving, particularly its community of healers and its practitioners of alternative health and spirituality. This community has been ignored, by the media at least, for far too long. And it’s as vital to Santa Fe as its long-trumpeted arts community. My hope is that Evolving Santa Fe will help bring people in this world together, that it will, in its own small way, serve as both a meetinghouse for people in this community and as a conduit through which they can help others learn, grow, and evolve.

The Magic Beyond the Comfort Zone
M
ost of us were brought up in an environment that taught us something very specific about what it means to heal. Break an arm? Have it set. Cut yourself? Cover the cut with a Band-Aid. Have an ulcer? Take antacids. Depressed? Take a pill. If you have a tumor, get it biopsied, and then have it cut out. These experiences and their corresponding actions are so common in our culture that the presence of an underlying message, of a whole way of seeing ourselves and the world, becomes almost invisible to us. Beneath that simple experience of “Have a headache, take an aspirin,” there is a message: If something feels bad, we must do whatever it takes to make the pain go away so we stay in our comfort zone. But there is a difference between comfort and healing. Comfort means keeping things the same, not rocking the boat, maintaining the status quo. This is not to say that there is anything wrong with being comfortable, at times that is the most healing experience you can have. However, restoring comfort is simply resetting ourselves back to the moment before the pain started, so whatever conditions in our lives might have contributed to creating that painful experience are very likely still there. Nothing has changed. True healing is about growth. Growth requires change, instability, and reorganization. You can see how comfort and healing could go in opposite directions. Instability can be scary, reorganization requires energy, and change will definitely take us out of our “comfort zone.”
When we seek only comfort, a return to the status quo, we end up feeling victimized by our circumstances. My head hurts, my allergies are annoying me, my arthritis is debilitating, my back is killing me. Something is happening to us, and so we have no relationship with it. In this situation we do not see that we have any choice, we do not see the underlying messages. If we have no relationship to something, how can we impact it, how can we change it? We feel it is even impossible to simply be with it. What if you had it backwards? What if you are hurting your head? What if you are killing your back? To choose to reorganize and change requires being present with the pain, the discomfort, the illness, and the loss, so the energy from that experience can be liberated and transformed into wisdom. When we give ourselves permission to go through the ups and downs of whatever it is we are experiencing, we open up the myopic lens of seeing ourselves from the limited vantage point of being a victim—to recognizing the full and multi-faceted aspects of our existence. Even if you’re not consciously identifying yourself as a victim, you may still be acting the way a victim would act. To heal comes from the Latin word hale, which means to become whole. When you are able to stay present with all that you’re feeling—the good and the bad—you learn to navigate into wholeness. Then you start to realize what would seem like a paradox, that good and bad are part of a continuum of life experience and may in fact exist seemingly at the same time.
“True healing is about growth. Growth requires reorganization, instability, and change.”

Once we see the underlying message of our culture’s common concept of healing then we are able to have a choice: to continue to see pain or discomfort as something to avoid, or to see it as a chance to wake up into our lives. Imagine how this view could apply to any aspect of your life: Argument with a co-worker? Frustration with a boss? Car accident? Financial challenges? Cancer? Imagine if the focus you brought to those life events and experiences encouraged growth, presence, and exploration? It would require asking new and different questions, shifting our worldview from, ‘Why is everything so hard, and how can I make this stop?’ to ‘How can I listen to what this is trying to teach me and embody the wisdom offered?’ This is the magic that lies beyond the comfort zone.

Spring Equinox: Witnessing Our Own Awakening
T
he spring equinox arrived on March 20, ushering in the potential of new life, new energy, and new manifestations. This cycle of rebirth is well upon us, evidenced by the annual arrival of the tulips and crocuses, blooming forsythia, budding aspens, and the flowering of apricot and plum trees. At the spring equinox, we honor the fecundity of the land, the sprouting of the seeds within earth, and the promise of abundance. As we awaken from the slumber of winter, romantic thoughts of spring fill us with joy and excitement. Visions of throwing open the windows in our homes, planting our spring gardens, wearing Birkenstocks without socks, or perhaps dreaming of a “budding” romance may arise with the coming of spring. Yet the reality of spring is that it is a season of dramatic change. Romantic illusions aside, one day we are dancing in our sandals and the next we may be donning our snow boots. Spring snowstorms and wild fluctuations in temperatures, not to mention blooming juniper, remind us that life and her rhythms are not always as we think they should be or how we prefer them to be. Still, the snow and ice will thaw and melt and the juniper will complete her cycle. This time provides a moment of pause, a state of equilibrium, where we can reflect on how we are like the daffodils that endure the late spring snows of northern New Mexico. It is As we embrace the beauty and complexity of this both a challenge and a test of faith to in a season of unpredictability, magical and unpredictable season, notice the flowers that thrive yet if we awaken to the teachings of the spring, she imparts deep wisdom are emerging and the trees that are blooming, about the strength of faith, birth, and meditating on their strength, courage, and vulnerability. clearing out the old to make room for the new. As we embark upon the spring cleaning of our gardens and abodes, the body and mind also benefit from such intentional clearing. Winter is a time of rest, a time when our energy turns inward. We spent many days nestled inside our warm homes expending less energy and perhaps eating heavy foods to fortify ourselves. As we now move into a state of increased activity and daylight, we may become aware that our energy has become sluggish or stagnant. Massage and somatic polarity therapy, alone or in combination, are both highly beneficial modalities to move stagnant energies out of the body. Somatic polarity therapy, developed in the late 1940s by Dr. Randolph Stone (nee Bautsch), is an energy-based, body-centered practice that combines both western medicine and eastern wisdom traditions. Somatic polarity practitioners work from the understanding that energy fields and currents exist everywhere in nature, as polarity therapy asserts that the flow and balance of energy in the human body is the foundation of good health. When energy is unbalanced, blocked, or fixed due to stress or other factors, pain and disease arise. Polarity therapy seeks to find the blockages and release energy to normal flow patterns, and to maintain the energy field in an open, flexible condition.

As a somatic polarity therapist, my work is influenced by seasonal shifts and changes. In early spring, the element of air often presents a call for a balancing within my clients. As we emerge from winter and semi-hibernation, it is common for the body to present symptoms of stagnation and excess gas. The body, an ever-intelligent system, moves such gases to the periphery of the body, away from our vital organs. As a result, this air often builds in the connective tissues and settles in the shoulders, forearms, colon, ankles, and joints, creating congestion and lethargy. In the practice of somatic polarity therapy, the element of air also governs the heart, the center of compassion. Whether we are coming out of the dark nights of winter, or a “dark night of the soul,” clearing the heart through the use of healing touch and gentle talk therapy allows access to an opening of the heart center. When the energy of our heart center opens, there is often a release of sadness and hurt, a rebirth from our pain into a gentle acceptance of our experiences and humanness. Releasing this energy provides the opportunity to experience compassion for both self and others, giving and receiving and moving through life, allowing relationships with the self and others to open and flow more naturally and lovingly. As we embrace the beauty and complexity of this magical and unpredictable season, notice the flowers that are emerging and the trees that are blooming, meditating on their strength, courage, and vulnerability. Consider sitting silently and contemplating the following: What wisdom am I bringing with me from the dark of winter? Who am I becoming? What am I awakening within myself? What do I hope to birth and how might the earth and her teachings best support me? Earth and her abundance allows us the ability to blossom with the joy of living, to feel our roots strengthen our connection to the lifegiving soils of our lives, to be a witness to our own awakening. A blessed spring equinox to all.

Jyotish—The Mother of All Life-Guidance Systems
V
edic astrology is the ancient astrology of India. It is considered to be the mother of all life-guidance systems. Its principles were first intuited by the ancient Vedic seers eons ago but only written down around 5,000 years ago. As with so many of the systems that have come out of the Vedic tradition of India, i.e., yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, and Vastu, it was offered as a way to help us grow in conscious attunement with Universal Intelligence, thereby guaranteeing our happiness and fulfillment. Jyotish is the Sanskrit term for Vedic astrology. It translates as “Lords of Light,” referring to the planets and stars that influence us. It can be challenging to the Western, objective mind to understand how these orbiting hunks of rock in the sky can affect our lives. But the wise ones who cognized the principles of Jyotish understood that there is something profoundly fundamental about the interconnectedness of existence. They saw that the macrocosm of the universe is contained, in seed form, in the microcosm of the self. They also understood that the inherent nature of the universe is vibrational, a principle validated by modern quantum physics. The vibrational qualities of each of the planets and stars are thus reflected within us as different styles or qualities of intelligence and energy. For example, the “Jupiterian” intelligence is our capacity for growth, expansion, wisdom, morality, spirituality, and good fortune; Venus represents our ability to love and form

Though there are some similarities, the differences are too numerous to adequately discuss here. Comparing the two systems is risky, so suffice it to say that both systems offer their own valid “window into a person’s soul.” However, there are a few important distinctions worth mentioning. First and foremost, Jyotish has unique methods that give it the ability to be highly accurate and predictive. This is seen not only in the transits of the planets but in the influence of the major and minor planetary periods that change throughout one’s life.

Yogas are another important system of analysis in Jyotish. It identifies important planetary unions that can signify success, wealth, education, spirituality, and health— not seen just by the isolated configurations of the planets. Finally, there is a big difference in how Vedic astrology determines the positions of the planets in the signs. It uses something called the Sidereal system, which determines the astronomically correct positions of the planets at the time of birth. The history, the depth, and the complexity of this system are so vast that one highly reputed Vedic scholar once commented that that it would take a student wishing to master this science “five lifetimes to cross the ocean of Jyotish.” Vedic astrology is the ultimate life guidance system. It identifies our gifts, talents, and abilities, and it gives us deep insight into the important matters of our lives, such as career, relationships, money, health, and mental and emotional wellbeing or spirituality. It also offers methods for enhancing these areas. It is uniquely constructed to indicate the timings for both prosperity and challenge and, if periods of challenge are indicated, it offers us ways to remediate the difficulties. Jyotish is the perfect tool for helping us navigate the often turbulent seas of life in order to arrive at the shore of fulfillment and self-realization.

hile it may be platitudinous to say that most people in the healing arts often teach what they themselves most need to learn, that doesn’t make it any less true. Nor is it a swipe at healers. Shea Rollins, for instance, the founder and owner of Blue Moon Yoga, which offers classes in various hot yogas, first landed in a yoga studio 11 years ago due to a chronic shoulder problem, and felt so good after six consecutive days that she kept going—for the next 85 days. And beyond. “On the sixth day I could raise my arm over my head, so I didn’t want to stop,” says the tall, soft-spoken, 50-something Rollins, who was born in Dallas and raised in Odessa. “By the end I was clear that I wanted to do the teacher training.” And like many healers, she continues to teach, and learn (through teaching and from others), and pass on everything she discovers. In the hopes that other people—through yoga, through massage, through whatever—will find as much relief, joy, freedom, and depth as she has experienced. “I’m just continuously exploring yoga from other lineages and trying it out in my body,” says Rollins, who, before devoting herself to yoga, had also struggled with knee and back problems since her late 20s. “If it’s working well for me, it might for others. My belief is, Find what works for you—because it’s not one size fits all. Find what inspires you.” Rollins initially found inspiration at age 12, through a massage book her stepmother had brought home. Her stepmom was also into foot reflexology, which Rollins also absorbed. And after her first massage, in Amarillo back in 1984, “It was terrifying and liberating—and pivotal,” she recalls. “As soon as she made that first stroke down my back, I knew instantly I wanted to be in massage.”
who was immediately hired on at 10,000 Waves, where she still gives massages. She likes both— being an employee at the Waves, and an employer at Blue Moon. “I like the variety—the brief time to connect and create a rapport with someone and support them into greater awareness of their body and their aliveness—and my private practice and teaching—where I can work with people on longterm, longheld issues in their body.” Offering both Vinyasa (the yoga of yoking, or joining, movement with breath) and Nadi (which means river—as in the rivers of the human system that act as the organs of sensory awareness and action), Rollins and her fellow teachers at Blue Moon, Bea Vise and Jamie Hamilton, like their yoga hot. “A lot of people want to do hot yoga because they’re stiff,” explains Rollins. “Most traditional yogis, though, aren’t interested in heat. They want to create heat from inside. When you do hot yoga, your body’s trying to cool itself off.” Blue Moon also prefers cozy. The smaller class sizes, commonly 10 to 18 people at a time, allow for better individual attention. “I’m happier, too,” adds Rollins, “when there’s more inclusivity.” In other words: in whatever gives people more flexibility, a deeper connection to their bodies. Although she never had a grand vision of what she wanted to do or be, for the past six years, Rollins has been seeing Dr. John Holden—and working on herself and others (offering hands-on healing for allergies, chronic pain, emotional issues, and other maladies). “I realized I’d found the person I wanted to work with,” says Rollins, who’d been doing as much as a masseuse (and a yoga instructor), only not deliberately. “But this influences and touches everything that I do.”

ntentional living offers the opportunity to create fundamental changes in our lives based on the desire and determination to take action. Living with intention means living from a place of commitment to self, accountability, and authenticity. At the core of intentional living is the ultimate journey toward self-love and self-care. Why is selflove critical to living an intentional life? you may ask. Because when choices are made from superficial motivations the effects will only be temporary, but when choices are rooted from a place of self-love then life unfolds into a journey toward discovering our self-worth and our true magnificence. Thus, choices based on self-love will create fundamental changes from within that will be life altering.

How do we create fundamental changes in life? The answer is getting to the “why” factor. Why do you want to … fill in the blank. This is what will help you define the fundamental reason for, say, getting healthier or living more intentionally. How you want to feel from the inside out is what will fuel your daily motivation to creating fundamental changes. So how do you want to feel? Energized, focused, strong, happy, healthy, and vibrant? Let’s choose one area in life you want to focus your intention on and create a fundamental change. What would that be? Think about how making this fundamental change will improve your health or enhance your quality of life. How will it support you in feeling more energized, full of life, healthier, and vibrant, increase longevity and vitality? Thus, identify fundamental changes you desire to make, based on how you want to feel about yourself from the inside out—this will help you define your “why” factor. Your why factor will then inform your intentions, which will lead you to taking action based on your commitment to self, your health, and your life. Living an intentional life means living in full awareness of who you are, what’s important to you, and your daily choices through deliberate and conscious actions. Thus, living intentionally requires us to take 100 percent responsibility for our lives—it means accepting and forgiving ourselves, addressing self-limiting beliefs, and making choices that are self-honoring. Intentional living means recognizing that we are divine expressions of life, that we are true miracles.

Five Steps to Encourage an Attitude of Gratitude in Our Children Here are five steps to encourage an attitude of gratitude in our children: •
•
•
M
y brain knows that gratitude is important. I know when I am in a state of gratitude—aware of my blessings, small and big, I feel happier and less alone. I feel more connected to the people around me, and my life experiences. I feel in my body a life force greater than myself. But my heart can find it difficult to stay in a sustained place of gratitude. Rather, it is a practice of reminding myself over and over, to start, over and over. Sometimes that means making lists of things I am grateful for at the end of each day, or at least at the end of the week. Sometimes that means taking a deep, conscious breath before I get out of bed and put my feet on the floor.
•
I am learning to practice gratitude as an adult. But what would it be like if we could introduce the concept of gratitude to our children when they are young? If gratitude just became a part of their vocabulary, a daily habit like brushing their teeth or eating dinner? If they can • experience the magic of gratitude early, perhaps the practice wouldn’t feel so challenging or foreign to them.
Start with cultivating your own gratitude practice: If we believe in the value of being thankful for all that we are blessed with, our vision starts to shift. We start to see the potential value or gift, even in difficult life experiences. Children tend to follow what we do, even more than what we say. If our children see us connected and thankful, that energy will flow downstream towards them.
the time. It is a practice for all of us. Sometimes, we need to feel through the anger and sorrow of an experience before we can come to a place of gratitude. Otherwise, our gratitude becomes hollow, artificial. Allow your children to feel what they feel, with adequate time and space. When the time feels right, see if there is an opportunity to include gratitude in the conversation.
Perhaps our practice of gratitude is one of the greatest gifts we can give to ourselves. We start to Vocalize gratitude as part of an everyday see all that is alive and breathing in our world, all conversation: Say it out loud. “I really of the collective energy and wisdom we are a part appreciate being able to watch you play in of. Whether we are grateful for our breath or your soccer game.” Or, “We are so fortunate another day, or whether we are grateful for a to have and share this meal vacation or a yoga class, it is all important. We together.” Making it a point to express our notice our life, and all of the details, and allow that thankfulness out loud can increase our joint noticing to sink into our lived experience. awareness. The more we say it loud, the If we can start this practice and conversation more we feel it in our bones. early, with our children, we take advantage of their Discover gratitude even for the small young, resilient minds. Gratitude becomes things: Children inherently are excited about something we share with them, deepening our both little and big things in life. Encourage understanding of them, and deepening our gratitude for the small, mundane parts of life, connection to them. More than that, we can not just the exciting Disney World encourage skills that will last them a lifetime, moments. As we adults know, much of life is enhancing their own sense of wellness in this a day in, day out, routine. The trick is to see world. the beauty and wonder even in another day at work, or another morning of dropping the kids off to school. Sometimes, on difficult days, all we might be grateful for is another day on this Earth, or the beating of our heart. That is more than enough. Encourage downtime for reflection: If we are moving at breakneck speed, it is hard to slow down enough to notice what there is to be grateful for. Noticing is the first step towards counting our blessings. Encourage lots of time for quiet, rest, and reflection. A good time is the end of the day, perhaps before or after a night-time story. Ask your children questions about the enjoyable and difficult parts of their day, the “highs” and the “lows.” This can encourage a dialogue about both gratitude, as well as the struggles they are currently experiencing. Acknowledge the reality of their emotional experience: Kids, just like adults, won’t feel grateful for everything all

Unearthing our Spiritual-Emotional Guidance
W
e live in a society that has been built to keep us busy and distracted. Between work and family schedules, the pull of technology, the limitations of Western time structures, and a constant barrage of artificial stimuli, it is possible to live our lives steeped completely in thought processes of “what’s next” and how to fulfill our daily commitments. For much of my life, as many healing practitioners and independent body-workers can identify with, I experienced both the deep challenges and the vital freedoms that came with leading my own healing practice, often run out of my home. The rhythm of my life was rarely predictable as I worked and healed with the ebb and flow of my business and clientele. For much of my life, I lived with both the privilege and the poverty of having a flexible schedule and undulating work. One thing my life never encompassed on its roller-coaster ride: the mundane. In the past year, as I have opened a healing storefront in downtown Santa Fe, there has been a major shift in my day-today lifestyle. Epic relief and the stifling mundane entered my life on the same wind-current. As rigid time structures have come into my life, I have welcomed the “mundane” in a different capacity than ever before. As I have become married to a daily routine (intense and demanding as a small business owner), I have had to restructure my understanding of how I experience day-to-day interactions and the ability to unleash my inner knowing within a time-and space-driven structure, very much a part of this distracting world. As healers and lightworkers, I think we can all attest to the deeper knowing and flow that has the potential to bring amazing things and experiences into our lives: these often occur outside the context of mundane routines and strict schedules. And so, it has begged me to question within myself: What does it mean to live on the radical edge of intuition on a day-to-day basis? What would it mean to unearth the radical mundane? In order to understand this, I have had to dig deeply into internal chemistry to interrogate what it means to live from a deep heart-place regardless of what daily
experiences define our lives: Creating a structure, a sanctuary where people can surrender to the peace and calm that a walk-in healing storefront offers has allowed me to present everyday spirituality to the flow of life, a hearth, a warm place for travelers and the village people of Santa Fe and surrounding areas to come home and relax into feeling nourished to love and cherish themselves. Releasing stress, we can remember to be at home with ourselves and access tenderness and acceptance so that we can begin to feel our emotional guidance system. We soften the barriers that have adapted us to exist in a culture that often demands us to focus externally and achieve and be independent. We are pioneering living from our heart within a culture that often demands us to compromise our deepest values in order to survive. Now we are striving to thrive and create a balanced life of prosperity and abundance and interdependence. How can we have everyday spirituality within the context of breaking the barriers that have imprisoned us? Every day we have the opportunity to live life from our deep inner knowing. Listening to the profound wisdom that resides within our hearts, our portals to connect to tenderness and vulnerability, we breathe magic into our lives. We can trust ourselves by being in full presence with our emotional guidance systems. Our feelings are the antennae to discover what we know to be true for us. The deeper we feel, the more we can fully be in presence with our life force. Our emotions compel us to dive deep into our vulnerability and tenderness with ourselves, opening us to receive the subtle emanations and messages of wisdom that guide our path with clarity and grace. Fully experiencing strong emotions such as anger and rage can clear our murky thought spaces and transform them into embodying our strength and full power. Dropping in with our sadness and grief unveils our longings for profound connection and love. When we fully surrender and experience our feelings, we come to know what led us astray from intimately interacting and expressing what is true for us. From this place we can correct with a deep knowing what is true and integral as our next best

step that resonates with our spiritual selves. The veils of illusion that are present due to familial and cultural patterning dissolve, allowing us to fully embrace and experience our emotional bodies. As we feel, we heal and experience the ecstasy of presence in the moment. When we are distracted by our minds, we can know that attentiveness to our feelings will guide us back to ourselves. This act of surrendering to our feelings is a spiritual everyday path that leads us to live an authentic life in the full expression of who we are. The experience of unveiling our emotions so that we feel our authenticity gives us the confidence to know and create the daily structures within the “mundane” that meet our deepest needs. Individually and collectively we are stepping into spiritual activism, gaining our full power and momentum for heart-centered living in our day-today lives.

Colorplate Kirlian photographs taken of a single drop of individual flower essences reveal that each individual flower essence has its own distinctive, characteristic bioenergetic radiation pattern. Current scientific advances in technology will aid in supporting the validity of flower essences. Flower essences offer us an opportunity for our soul’s growth and evolution, and many shamans and prophecies purport that humanity is moving into the age of flowers as our collective consciousness raises into a higher frequency of existence.

e Here Now– those seminal three words uttered by Bhagavan Das to his initiate Ram Dass still apply as a powerful directive for living a spiritual life. Is this familiar to you? Attending a weekend yoga or meditation retreat and experiencing the blissful high of deep clarity, everything smells better and tastes better, the clean diet makes you feel light and energized, life is fantastic ... only to come crashing back to reality at the first signs of stress. It is, of course, the mundane affairs of life that test us and cause us to waver. It is relatively effortless to feel connected to spirit while meditating, doing yoga, or singing in satsang. Early in my meditation practice, I experienced this chasm. I’d soar high above my physical body in blissful reverie. This resonance, however, was short lived, as I plummeted to earth an hour later in traffic, hurling F-bombs at careless drivers while my blood boiled. The discrepancy between my two selves was blatant and alarming. Why couldn’t I maintain my state of bliss? The Great Work of Life is this very practice: mindfulness amid chaos, stress, and discord. The quest to live a spiritual life can be shored up by a holistic inventory of one’s lifestyle. There is no question that when we are eating poorly, participating in addictive behaviors, or not getting adequate sleep, it is far more challenging to cultivate a sanguine disposition. In these instances, taking stock and beginning to make changes will support your intention for a more centered life. Additionally, developing a regular meditation practice builds a solid foundation for being connected to whatever it is that you call God. Don Miguel Ruiz provides a practical spiritual primer with his book, The Four Agreements. They are as follows:
some ways to unwind emotional triggers that you might find useful. The initiating, and most crucial, step is to become self-aware even when we are triggered. Let’s say you just meditated and are out in your day when something occurs that derails you: Someone cuts you off in traffic while flipping you the bird. A salesperson gives you poor customer service while being rude. A loved one becomes angry and says hurtful things. As a result, you find yourself feeling heightened emotionally, your body feels tense, and you no longer are feeling connected to self or spirit. This is the point of interception. If, in that moment, you can say to yourself, “I feel off” or “I feel disconnected,” then you are demonstrating self-awareness by witnessing what is happening. It might seem simple, but when an emotional dynamic starts running, this can prove challenging. The act of naming where you are at immediately gains altitude over the situation, as opposed to being myopically immersed. The next step is to gain clarity by identifying what happened: “That person cut me off in traffic, which really enrages me because they put me in danger of having an accident.” “I really hated how that salesperson treated me, their rudeness was offensive and unkind.” “I feel so hurt that my partner would speak to me in that way, why am I even in this relationship?” It is our response to the stimuli that causes our emotions to flare. By owning our response, we can begin to elevate our consciousness to the response we would like to be having. Furthermore, if we apply a spiritual directive to our response then the energy starts to move: “I want to not take people’s behavior personally and I do not want to make assumptions about what their behavior means.” Which leads to:
“The Great Work of Life is this very practice: mindfulness amid chaos, stress, and discord.”
1. Be Impeccable With Your Word. 2. Don’t Take Anything Personally. 3. Don’t Make Assumptions. 4. Always Do Your Best. When discussing the Four Agreements over the years, I’ve found that people tend to struggle the most with number two and number three. These agreements are usually tethered to longformed dynamics at work in our psyches. Through my studies and practice, I’ve found

Everyday Spirituality
“I have no idea why that person cut me off, but it had nothing to do with me. For all I know they were rushing to the emergency room with a loved one in the car. I don’t need to make it about me. I am so happy an accident didn’t happen and that I am fine.” “That salesperson seemed so unhappy, and unhappy people often lash out at others. His/her rudeness is an indication of how disconnected they feel, and has nothing to do with me. I’d like to be extra kind to people like that. Clearly they are hurting.” “I don’t know what is going on with my partner, but I do want to take care of myself and not be available to be spoken to in that way. I don’t have to take their outburst personally, however, it gives me something to think about as we go forward. I will communicate my understanding of what I will and won’t participate with in relationship.” Now we’ve gained altitude, we are lifted out of the triggering dynamic and are back to being centered. This process of getting triggered, noticing the heightened state of emotion, lifting out by intercepting the dynamic with our applied awareness, gaining clarity, and re-centering is a powerful tool of applying our spirituality throughout the day as we encounter stimuli that otherwise would heave us about. There is never a moment when we are not spiritual, it is our essence. We just sometimes forget who we really are. I find these techniques help me get back into balance.

Becoming Aware: How to Repattern Your Brain and Revitalize Your Life

he setting of the championship race was certainly picturesque: Castaic Lake, a reservoir formed by the Castaic Dam in the Sierra Pelona Mountains of northwestern Los Angeles. Action scenes for movies and TV are often filmed there because of the gorgeous but rugged natural terrain, and this is where I arrived for the state championship. I was in second place overall, but this was the last race and counted for double points. I was focused in on my goal of taking the title. It didn’t matter to me that when the race started at eight in the morning, it was already a searing 95 degrees. Or that this particular year, they ran the course in a different direction than they had run it in previous years, which would entail far more climbing for the racers. About 5,300 feet of steep
uphill biking was in my future during the 21-mile course. Hours later, the win was in my reach. The race was three laps, and in the previous two, I’d always passed the firstplace girl on the descent. Jon had taught me how to descend, and I was fearless about it. On the third lap, I spotted her right before the descent began, and I knew I’d pass her on the downhill and get to the finish line first. That was the last thing I remember. All of a sudden, I woke up at the bottom of the hill with pine needles stuffed into my jersey. My helmet was sideways on my head and cracked in several places (although I didn’t know that at the time). I wanted to climb back up the hill, but the pine needles were so thick that I kept slipping.
Another cyclist saw me struggling to get up the hill, stopped, and said, “Are you okay?” Later, he told me that I was trying to get back on my bike and just kept falling back down the hill. All I remember was pedaling and watching that girl in front of me. Eventually, doctors would tell me that memory loss is retroactive, and this The following excerpt has been is why I don’t remember the actual fall or trying to scramble back up the hill. explain the level of consciousness I experienced. No words could explain something that is much more expansive than anything I’ve ever known here. I once looked out over the cliff at the great Grand Canyon, and this feeling was even vaster than that experience. When I ask myself why now, I know the answer. This was a place of complete, unconditional love. There are no conditions of any kind in this state of pure expansion. There are no boundaries; no pain; and no past, present, or future. It is all of those things at once: the past, present, and the future occurring at the same exact time. It is actually a state of all-encompassing awareness rather than a “place.” It just is. I can’t report that I saw a white light, nor did I travel down a tunnel according to the classic depiction of a near-death experience (NDE) as defined by Dr. Raymond Moody. All I felt was vast consciousness, and anything that came into my awareness was instantly manifested in front of me. I thought of Asia, for example, and Asia was in front of me. I’m not specifically sure why Asia came into my awareness, as I’d never been there; however, it is the best way I can describe how everything was immediately in my realm of awareness, without borders. Even the most remote place I could imagine appeared in my limitless sphere of consciousness.
I was definitely not creating this in my mind, as I was the furthest from analytical thinking I had ever been. I was purely experiencing this peaceful state. I felt so serene and wanted for nothing. There were no unmet needs, hopes, or goals. There were no desires, as everything was present at that moment. What I would find so interesting when I would look back on it was the absence of pain in that state. What I know now is that all discomfort is created in the mind. I had no feeling of pain after my accident—in fact, I couldn’t feel my body at all. Now I see bodies as beautifully intelligent sacs of fluid and bones, encapsulated by the boundaries of our skin. Don’t get me wrong, because I love our human bodies and know that they are amazing creations, but I also know for a fact that we are not our bodies. We are pure expanded consciousness. Back at the mountain, one of the EMTs was asking, “Are you Jon?” “Yes,” a familiar voice said. “She has been saying your name. She has been asking for you.” I saw this silver cord, luminescent, pure, and bright, attached between Jon and me. It was like a light beam connecting us. I saw the connection, and knew that it was something quite significant.
At that moment, I jumped back into my body, which felt very confined and small. I looked up, and my eyes met Jon’s. I didn’t have the ability to speak because my body had been throwing up. These wonderful medics kept turning my head to the side so that I wouldn’t choke on my own vomit. Even though I couldn’t form any words, I marveled that I could communicate in a new way. I spoke from my eyes to his eyes. And it was one of the most powerful and complete communications I had ever experienced. It only lasted seconds, and then I left again, returning to this beautiful place of expanded consciousness.

But if you take the road that lacks optimism instead of taking steps toward renaissance, your steps will lead you to complaints, resentment, or even desperation. Optimists hold on to hope . . . they don’t ignore the reality and consequences of problems, but they also don’t despair or lose themselves in the chaos when Pandora’s Box is opened. In your daily life, you will face many obstacles; sometimes they will be bumps in the road, other times they will be The Story of the Two Applicants complete detours. Book Excerpt
About the Book Feeling Great, Creating a Life of Optimism, Enthusiasm and Contentment (HCI Books) is a fascinating and complete guidebook that offers a simple blueprint for a lifelong embodiment of true contentment by a triad of leading wisdom keepers— Dadi Janki, Peter Vegso, and Kelly Johnson. In this treasure of a book, built on the timeless spiritual teachings of visionary Dadi Janki, revered leader of the worldwide Brahma Kumari Spiritual Movement, readers learn the precepts for feeling great and the three keys that unlock the ability to attain it. Charming parables, specific examples, and insightful exercises further illuminate this wisdom. Coauthors Peter Vegso (the publisher who brought Chicken Soup for the Soul to the world) and Kelly Johnson reveal practical applications to help people navigate and overcome the sticking points we all encounter in our hectic, overscheduled lives. This book lets you really OWN a permanently elevated state of mind and way of life. Feeling Great breaks down the elements that must be present in your life to experience sustained peak living. It succinctly brings forth what needs to be cast aside, what needs to be adapted, and how to get from that place of emptiness to robustness as you build character traits that strengthen your contentment muscle. Feeling Great is available at www.hcibooks.com, Amazon.com, and many bookstores.
to dictate how we feel, but we can learn to control the inner and outer influences that affect us. We can actually train ourselves to overcome distressing or pessimistic emotions and enjoy greater happiness in our lives. 1. Be grateful for what you have—you may not have everything you want, but it's likely that you have everything you need. If you don't, be grateful for the ability to pursue your needs and set a plan to achieve them. 2. Find a source of awe in each day— there are a million things waiting to be discovered: a person's kindness, a sunrise, a faithful pet. Take a look around you and learn to recognize them. 3. Reach out to someone—be kind, listen, share something. Until you make that effort, you won't know what the person next to you needs. An encouraging word may be all that's needed to give someone an emotional boost. 4. Do something for yourself—even if it's something small like taking an extra ten minutes with your coffee in the morning or taking the scenic way home from work. 5. Be aware of your thoughts—when something runs through your mind that you can't do anything about, let it go. All

that thinking will cause you to sink lower; you need to rise above things that are not contributing to your happiness. 6. Live for today—realize that you only have right now and make the best of it; yesterday is gone and tomorrow will bring challenges of its own. 7. De-clutter—clean out your junk drawer, tidy up your desk or your closet. When you put external things in order, your mind and heart will also function in a more orderly fashion and that is an especially liberating feeling. 8. Donate—find something that you haven't worn or used in a while that someone else can use; maybe it's a coat, a blanket, or the blue jeans you can't fit into anymore. Make sure they are in good condition; donating old rags is not very helpful or caring. 9. Quit feeling sorry for yourself—even if something legitimate is making you sad, know the true source of the sadness and grow, but an attitude of "poor me" is simply being negative. 10. Set a goal—whether it's exercise, eating better, encouraging your child more often-each little step forward will be rewarding. 11. Practice calm—every one of us has hectic days that can unravel us if we let

them. Breathe, settle down, and tackle one situation at a time; you'll accomplish more and feel less stressed. 12. Take a quick inventory of things around you that are comforting—the pictures on your desk, the trees on the roadside, the music in your car, the bed on which you are sleeping. Wherever you are, there are reminders of your fortunebe thankful! 13. Smile more—even if you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, determine that you will not take negative feelings into your day. Try smiling at yourself in the mirror (and try not to laugh!). 14. Get outside—of the building. The sun has an amazing ability to change our perspective; its warmth can permeate even the grumpiest façade. If it's not a sunny day, take a drive or take a walk in the rain and appreciate its ability to renew and make things grow-including you. 15. Get outside—of yourself. Too much thinking and internalizing can make you dull and self-centered. Lift up your chin and be an overcomer-you really can be happy if you try; and that makes everyone around you happy.

Spiritual Horoscope
May 2015 Taurus (April 20 – May 20) — Happy birthday Taurus! Treat yourself right by clearing out what is no longer useful. This can mean clothes, possessions — or negative beliefs, bad financial habits, or low self-esteem. As you get rid of tangible things, you’ll be free from unhelpful thoughts. Using affirmations after releasing bring in joy, especially when centered on prosperity and intimacy. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) — Mercury retrogrades in your sign, helping you slow down your thoughts, re-prioritize, and form a new plan of action. Meditate each day, even for a few moments, to release frustration and forgive things that haven’t worked out. Success is coming, but clear the old first. Guidance comes as you surrender to higher options! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) — The Universe wants you to be joyous—and first it needs to reveal what blocks your bliss. Meditate to find resentments, obsessive thought, worry, and other obstacles. Journal about them, be willing to release them, and ask for them to be lifted. Breakthroughs happen over May and June — better health, relationships, finances, and all-around happiness!
energy into the Universe, you can attract exciting options. You might receive guidance in dreams. Also ponder ways to bring your soul essence to “mundane” parts of your life.
be starting, or a current one becoming more intimate. Meditate in your home to create a peaceful, welcoming energy that envelops and soothes as you go beyond your comfort zone!
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) — Be aware of how your words and thoughts either expand or limit you! It may sound weird, but write an affirmation or positive idea, and then journal the negative voices that come up to counteract it. It’s good to put light on hidden subconscious thoughts! They lose power once exposed. Write freely without judgment about buried anger and other “bad” things. Cleansing your mind like this builds health, prosperity, and helps you feel authentic and truly happy.
Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) — It’s hard to let others help you. You have pride mixed with shame about your struggles. Meditate on people who are open-hearted in your life. Make an effort to reach out and let them know what’s going on. They have intuitive ideas for you, as well as love and compassion! You can’t go it alone, so let the Universe flow to you through fellow spiritual travelers.
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) — Mercury retrograde wants you to re-assess goals. Do your daily actions contribute to success or make you muddled? Do the people you surround yourself with support your higher desires? Do you even really know what your higher desires are? Meditate to find all these answers. Even if you seem reclusive now, you’ll emerge next month with greater clarity and empowerment!
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) — Life wants to open your heart to more prosperity, love, and intimacy. As Mercury retrogrades, meditate on old hurts and disappointments that keep you shut down or cautious. Ponder limiting beliefs you want to release. Use the power of your imagination to envision positive future situations. You are spiritually powerful, and are actually creating a new reality! But first clear out the old to make room for the new.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) — Confused about career or life purpose? Meditate on activities that make you truly joyful. Create affirmations or a vision board about those things. Share your passion with spiritual friends. Just by sending that
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) — Making commitments scares for you. Remember, you’re not limiting your options, but opening to a deep treasure trove of possibilities that’s richer than what’s on the surface! A relationship can EVOLVING…IN SANTA FE
Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) — Even though you’re positive for others, you’re cynical about your own life. So much fulfillment awaits you in relationships, health, prosperity, and peace of mind. What’s keeping you from accepting your divine good? Meditate to release old hurts. Forgiveness heals and re-shapes your worldview so you’re open to the blessings and good karma that are yours for the taking! Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) — Part of why you incarnated as Pisces was to master fear! Be grateful for spiritual people in your life who remind you of your strength and courage. Meditate about creating serenity in your home — having a sacred space; safe boundaries around communication, etc. Being peaceful empowers you to crush your negative thinking. shield yourself from domineering people (it’s their fear dressed up as control). Aries (March 21 – April 19) — Do you have negative beliefs about God or religion? Maybe you have unhealed ideas about God being harsh and judgmental, which cause you to rebel and struggle against authority figures like bosses, family members, or even your spouse. Seek out nurturing spiritual images that soothe your internal warrior. The Universe is on your side, encouraging you toward greatness, not keeping you from it!
