a word from carlson rezidor
sound Celebrating
The hospitality industry is a treat for the senses: the visual impressions of architecture and interior design, the aroma of gourmet food, the taste of sparkling champagne and the feeling of sleeping on freshly washed sheets. However, sounds can be just as important for the overall impression: the friendly greeting at the reception desk, the sound a lift makes when it reaches its designated floor and the cheerful chatter from the hotel bar. At Carlson Rezidor, we work hard to provide the best sound whenever it is needed and the absence of sound when it is not. For example, at the Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel, Helsinki, guests can connect their smartphones and tablets to the room’s internal sound system, allowing them to customize a personal soundtrack to their stay. Conversely, Angelica Montez de Oca during the construction of the Radisson Blu Hotel, Oslo Director PR & Communication, Nordic, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group. angelica.montez@carlsonrezidor.com Alna and Park Inn by Radisson Hotel & Conference Centre Oslo Alna, a lot of work went into isolating the rooms from outside noise, as the hotels are located near one of the busiest highways in Norway. However, sound is not only about creating a memorable experience for our guests; it is also about listening to what they have to say. In this issue, the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group’s Vice President Digital Marketing, Remy Merckx explains how we can use digital tools to improve customer relations. For example, regardless of which communication channel our customers use, be it telephone, e-mail or social media, our CRM platform ensures that they get the same, impeccable Yes I Can service. By combining the latest technology with timeless service-mindedness, we ensure that all our customers’ voices are heard.

If you travel to Helsinki this autumn, then you might encounter the city’s oldest tradition: the Helsinki Baltic Herring Fair. The fair, which dates back all the way to 1743, will be held from 5 October to 11 October in the Helsinki Market Square. Visitors can peruse the many products offered by the city’s anglers, including socks, hats, handicrafts, bread and – of course – herring. In fact, tens of thousands of kilos of salted, pickled and marinated herring will be brought to Helsinki for the fair. In addition, there are two award ceremonies held during the first day of the fair: Pickled Fish of the Year and Surprise of the Year.
Tough travel companion The Delsey Helium Trolley Case is the latest model to roll out of the design workshop in Paris. Mixing the best of two worlds, the Helium is both light and surprisingly rigid. The model comes fitted with four wheels that offer 360-degree mobility, as well as Delsey’s patented zip technology that is 41 times stronger than regular zip fasteners. In other words, the Delsey Helium lets you navigate the airport with ease, and gives you peace of mind while you’re up in the air.
Flying in style
Air France has partnered with Wijet to offer a new range of private jet services. These services are intended as a faster and more convenient option for passengers travelling with connecting flights to or from Charles de Gaulle in Paris, and are available to people travelling in the La Première cabin as well as any travel companions who fly in Business Class. As an added bonus, fares are up to 40% cheaper than those offered by the competition.
Sweet like chocolate
People travelling to or from Copenhagen Airport will be happy to learn that British chocolate brand Hotel Chocolat has set up shop in Terminal 3. The name notwithstanding, this is not an actual hotel, but a “Cocoa Bar-Café”, where customers can partake of delicious chocolate made according to the mantra “less sugar, more cocoa”. z lifestyle magazine | 25

Lit candles can transform a room into a calm oasis, and scented candles bring this oasis to life. These candles from Tom Dixon are based on the medieval philosophy of reducing everything into four elements: earth, fire, wind and water. The scented candles are made of a mixture of soy and paraffin wax, which gives them a burn time of 40 hours. Available in four scents and two different sizes.

The gOLF capital Of ScandInavia Skilled golfers have flocked to golf courses in Scotland, Ireland or Spain for decades, and usually they have been charged an arm and a leg for the privilege. Indeed, there are many great traditional golf destinations in Europe, but few as versatile as Malmö.
T
he city of Malmö is located in the very south of Sweden, and offers a wide range of high quality courses that would impress any professional golfer. This, together with a vibrant city life, makes Malmö the perfect city for a golfing holiday. The city and its numerous courses are conveniently located just 20 minutes from Copenhagen International Airport. In addition, the green fees in Sweden are known to be comparatively low, especially when taking into consideration the high quality of the courses. PGA of Sweden National is a state of the art golf club and one of the finest golfing resort in the Nordics. Some of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable people in golf today helped create the club’s classic Links Course and Lakes Course, both of which blend beautifully with their surroundings. Bokskogens Golf Club is located right outside Malmö. The Old Course with its generous fairways, watercourses and large immaculate greens challenges amateurs and professionals alike. The shorter New Course is perhaps not as difficult as the Old Course, but offers a different challenge with narrower fairways and smaller greens. The course offers beautiful scenery and wildlife. Falsterbo Golf Club is often ranked as one of the top courses in Sweden and among the Top 50 courses in Europe. The local physician Gunnar Bauer designed the golf course back in 1930. Ljunghusens Golf Club, founded in 1932, is a 27-hole links course, situated on the unique heath of the Falsterbo Peninsula. Located not far from the Falsterbo Golf Club, this is a golf course you definitely should not miss. Radisson Blu Hotel, Malmö is located right in the city centre of Malmö. It was recently renovated, and offers 229 fully equipped guest rooms that are perfect for golfers. The hotel offers very attractive golf packages with all of the abovementioned golf clubs, at rates that will that make you want to stay the whole summer. Fresh out the kitchen
German kitchen manufacturer Bulthaup has spread its mantra of functional, individual modules to kitchens around the world. This year, Bulthaup is launching a number of new products. First out are the Bulthaup solitaires. These pieces can be placed anywhere in a room, either alone or with others, and can make a kitchen more accessible whilst keeping its individual charm. The second product was a cooking table that can be used as a place to gather, or simply as a cooking island. At first resembling a wooden table, the middle section can be opened to reveal a cooktop – excellent for keeping dinner warm, or for a social cooking session.
Celebrate good times
This year, France’s most prominent maker of crystal glass designs, Baccarat, is celebrating its 250th anniversary with a windows display and a pop-up store at Printemps’ flagship store in Paris. In addition, Baccarat has launched a number of limited edition products that can only be found at Printemps.
Let there be light
The Lampe Gras series of lamps dates back to 1921, when Bernard-Albin Gras thought up an illuminating piece that would suit homes and offices alike. The sleek design lacked screws and welded joints, making it a favourite of French architect and designer Le Corbusier, who in turn introduced Lampe Gras lamps at his offices and architectural projects. These days, the model has become a popular collector’s item, and new iterations are still being introduced. This year, French producer DCW is re-launching Bernard Schottlander’s Mantis series from 1951. The lamp’s aluminium arms can assume countless acrobatic poses, captured somewhere in the borderland between balance and chaos.
Modular in Milano During the last decade, Paola Lenti has been one of the brightest shining stars in the world of Italian design. One of Paola Lenti’s most famous traits is her use of high-tech materials that are resilient in outdoors environments, which she applies to carpets, mattresses, cushions and furniture. At this year’s Furniture Fair in Milan, Paola Lenti unveiled a new collection to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary, where we find this modular seating system by Francesco Rota. The system is available both as traditional sofas and as a creative seating arrangement, with optional wooden cabinets and an integrated side table.

CRYSTAL CLEAR
The Swedish ultra-premium Purity Vodka is made within the walls of Ellinge Castle in southern Sweden. The recipe is the brainchild of founder and master blender Thomas Kuuttanen, who spent ten years perfecting the carefully distilled spirit. Thomas Kuuttanen has claimed that his ultimate goal is not necessarily to create a vodka that everyone prefers, but one that stands out from the crowd. It does, however, seem as if a lot of people prefer Purity Vodka, considering its large number of awards. In 2014, the brand has made inroads in the United States, signing actor Joel McHale as its first American ambassador. McHale recently headlined the White House Press Correspondents’ Dinner, where he roasted President Barack Obama in a somewhat friendly, somewhat edgy manner. Purity Vodka doubled their sales in the US last year, and are expected to grow even more in 2014.

This autumn, Stockholm Fisk hosted traditional Swedish crayfish parties, and they have a lot of surprises in store for the rest of the year.
Cream of the crop
At this year’s Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, a prestigious contest held in Brussels, Amarula Cream was awarded the gold medal. The judges praised the liqueur for its complex, yet balanced flavours of marula fruit and fresh dairy cream.
Eastern hospitality Sake is becoming increasingly popular in the West. A couple of brands are available on the Nordic market, including Masumi, Matsukura and the trendy “Small Sake”. The sake can be served both hot and cold, and in a variety of cups and glasses. However, when the sake is heated it is best served in small cups called choco, poured from a flask called tokkuri. This particular set is from Miya Sumi.

Timeless couture
Fashion designer Therese Zetterberg founded her fashion brand Zetterberg in 2007. She envisioned a brand of high-quality garments that are meant to last, both in terms of quality and style. Drawing a lot of inspiration from the early 20th century’s haut couture, Zetterberg’s repertoire extends to ready-to-wear, accessories, jewellery and tailor-made couture. In addition, last year saw the opening of the first Zetterberg Couture boutique in Gothenburg. This year, fans of unique, high-quality garments can look forward to Zetterberg’s AW14 collection, which features the brand’s characteristic, timeless style.

Approach the autumn in style with Tom Ford’s AW14 collection. Unveiled in early 2014 during the London Fashion Week, this collection features a generous amount of black, brown and olive green. In addition, the collection shows us a new, more casual side of Tom Ford, who is associated mainly with suits. Not that we’re complaining.

He writes about his passion in several international magazines, and his fifth book about watches hit Danish book stores a couple of months ago. He is also a dedicated watch collector.
Time flIes
PilOts do too
When a daring young man named Alberto Santos Dumont flew over Paris in his hot air balloon, he made history not only as an adventurer, but also as the first person to wear a tailor-made watch in the sky. He had asked his good friend, jeweller Louis Cartier, to make him a watch for the occasion – watches inspired by aviation have been en vogue ever since. Here´s a look at some of the pilot´s watches that look as good in the cockpit as on the ground.
Cut from the same cloth
This Florence-based watch brand does not have decades of aviation history on its résumé. Instead, an Italian businessman with a passion for flying created the Orologi Calamai watch collection only a couple of years ago. The watches, which are cut from the steel of an Italian F-104 jetfighter, offer either time only (three hander) or chronograph. Both versions come with a dial layout that leaves little doubt about the aviation inspiration, not least thanks to the black dial that is visible even in the tightest and darkest of cockpits.
Honourable homage
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was not only the author of Le Petit Prince from 1944; he was also an avid pilot. With the launch of the spectacular IWC Pilot´s Edition “The Last Flight”, the Swiss manufacturer pays tribute not only to their very first aviator watch from 1936, but also to the last flight made by Saint-Exupéry on 31 July 1944. This is the first time that IWC uses brown ceramic, a feat made possible by the use of a newly developed silicon nitride material. Ceramic is much lighter than steel and practically scratch resistant, and it looks great on the wrist of any pilot or aviator-fan. The diameter is 45 millimetre, and the watch is offered in a mix of ceramic/titanium, ceramic/rose gold and ceramic/platinum. The watches are limited to 1,700, 170 and 17 pieces, respectively, and one of the platinum models will be auctioned to raise money for the Saint-Exupéry Foundation.
One to watch
Breitling equals aviation, at least when talking about their illustrious Navitimer that debuted in 1953 with its inner slide rule bezel. The Navitimer is THE watch for the passionate pilot and I bet you will see this watch on many a wrist if you have a peek inside the cockpit during your next flight. This particular version, the Breitling Navitimer Panamerican, offers a stunning brown dial and in-house movement, and is limited to 2,000 pieces.

the Master
When Rolex introduced the legendary GMT-Master in 1954, they also wrote an important chapter in the horological history books. The Rolex GMT-Master offered a fourth central arrow-headed hand and a turning bezel offering 24 hours indication, meaning that PanAm pilots could read time in two different time zones without having to re-set the central hands. Originally offered in steel, the Rolex GMT-Master is now, for the first time, offered in white gold, undoubtedly appealing to the passengers in a private jet rather than the person in the cockpit.
Longines is one of the pioneers in aviator watches, not least due to the watch that was designed by Charles E. Lindbergh after his historic transatlantic solo flying in 1927. Among the brand’s selection of aviator watches we find the Longines Avigation Watch Type A-7, which is a relaunch of a pilot's watch from the 1920-30s. Back then, the 49-millimeter Avigation Watch Type A-7 was a military issued wristwatch and hence worn by pilots serving in the air force. The relaunch is very true to the original design and even offers a hinged case-back, which lets you look into the automatic single-pusher chronograph movement.

First-timer
Even today, you would point towards the sky if you saw a gentleman dressed in an immaculate threepiece suit flying around in his homemade hot air balloon. In other words, it was pretty spectacular to see Brazilian Alberto Santos Dumont use a hot air balloon as his primary form of transportation in Paris in the early 1900s. As he was not fond of releasing his firm grip of the instruments, he had asked his dear friend, the famous Paris jeweller Louis Cartier, to make him a watch he could wear around his wrist instead of in his waistcoat pocket. Little did he know that this would later become the first serial produced wristwatch in 1904. The modern version of the Cartier Santos Dumont, which was introduced in 2004, offers a slender mechanical movement and distinct black Roman indexes.
Swiss ambassador
For more than 50 years, Swiss watch manufacturer Alpina was an official supplier of military aviation watches to continental air forces. These military issued pilots watches have now been relaunched by Alpina, and the 44-millimeter Startimer Pilot Automatic with black PVD coating and automatic bi-compax chronograph movement is a great ambassador for the brand’s history in the clouds.

Which brands do you like and which scents? – I like the Porto candles, and La Labo, the santal one, and I like the Comme des Garçons candles. I like ones that have a strong scent. What do you think about the relationship between perfume and fashion? – Well, I think perfume is the last finishing touch to an outfit, so I think they’re very linked together. Although the number of cylinders in a car engine will have the most significant impact on its sound, car manufacturers work around the clock to perfect their own characteristic soundtrack. The sounds coming out of the exhaust pipes are to behave exactly the way the manufacturer has intended. Here are five different engine sounds that are sure to give you Goosebumps.
A chirping four-cycle
Volkswagen has managed to squeeze out 300 horsepower from the four-cycle turbo engine in their latest Golf R model. The four pipes in the back let out a chirping sound that is reminiscent of the turbo engines found in rally cars, such as the Audi Quattro.
with a Danish touch
Something special happens when an engine is mounted behind the driver’s seat and fitted with eight cylinders – and when that number is increased to ten, it gets very loud indeed. The sound from the Audi R8 Plus, which now comes with a super-fast dual-clutch transmission, is nothing short of fantastic. Every time you shift gear, the engine rumbles in a way that awakens your inner caveman. The cherry on the cake is that you can also add a state-of-the-art sound system from Bang & Olufsen, giving you the perfect sound both inside and outside the car.
Sounds like
disappointment
Somewhat disappointingly, this year’s Formula One has gone from being one of the loudest motorsport events to being one of the most average, thanks to the new, six-stroke turbo engines. In the past, you had to wear earplugs whenever you were close to the track, but that is no longer the case, as the turbo engine and exhaust system mostly sounds tinny and boring.
Masculine
Borderline illegal
Next up is the insane, borderline illegal, sound of the Jaguar F-Type R Coupé, with its V8 engine and 550 horsepower. An angrier sounding engine is hard to come by. The four pipes in the back hiss and roar whenever you let go of the pedal, as unused fuel is pumped out and ignited. Of course, this effect could have been reduced with the latest technology, but instead, Jaguar decided to amplify the effect to make it even tougher.
Silky smooth
Since we wrote about the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta in the most recent issue of Z, we have selected a very different V12 here: the Rolls-Royce Phantom. This engine is so quiet that you can hear a pin drop, and yet, this beast has lots of power to spare. Despite the nearly seven litre large V12 with 460 horsepower, the Phantom runs silky smooth. There might be some truth to the legend that you can place a coin on its edge on a Rolls-Royce radiator and not have it fall over; not even when the engine is running.

GOES THE DYNAMITE Portable Bluetooth speakers are all the rage, but few models hit that sweet spot between high-quality sound and a fair price. However, the Logitech UE Boom manages not only to sail in below the premium price point of its competitors; it actually sounds better! The speaker directs the sound in all 360 degrees and does so for more than 16 hours on a single charge. What’s more, you can link two separate Booms for stereo sound, and connect them to more or less all smartphones and tablets. Available in six different colours.
THE MAGIC NUMBER
When LG released the G2 smartphone last year, many critics praised it as one of the best Android smartphones ever made. This summer, LG released the successor, predictably named LG G3. As with the previous model, the G3 lacks buttons on the sides, which results in a very thin smartphone, with buttons easily accessible on the back. The screen has been upgraded to slightly insane 1440p, which is a 75% higher resolution than Full HD. Available in black, white and gold.
LIKE A PRO
Many enthusiasts were already sold on the Surface concept last year, when the Surface Pro 2 continued to bridge the gap between tablets and laptop computers. The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 takes the concept even further, as it is the lightest and thinnest model to date. With an increased screen size and improved features such as the customizable backrest and adjustable keyboard, this is easily the best way to experience Windows 8.
SMALL WONDER
Following in the footsteps of Apple, Roku and Amazon, Sony is releasing their own take on the increasingly popular set-top box. The Playstation TV is a small box that connects to your TV, allowing you to use popular apps such as Netflix from the comfort of your living room sofa. Although the Playstation TV has already been released in Japan, the American and European releases are set for this autumn. What separates the Playstation TV from other, similar boxes is the fact that it can download and play games for the original Playstation console, as well as the PSP and PS Vita. What’s most interesting, however, is that it supports the upcoming Playstation Now service, which allows you to stream games for the PS2 and PS3 to your TV, without any noticeable lag.
Vintage
Snapshot
In a time where most people own a smartphone or a digital camera, the polaroid camera is not as common a sight today as it was ten or twenty years ago. However, with the rise of apps such as Instagram, people are once again looking for an efficient way of sharing their favourite pictures. It makes sense, then, for Polaroid to create a camera tailored for Instagram users, namely the Polaroid Socialmatic. The Socialmatic allows you to share your photos instantly by Wi-Fi, or by using the built-in printer. Unlike the traditional Polaroid camera, however, users can alter their photographs and add filters before printing. The camera is available in two colours, with customizable covers. Expect this one to show up on plenty of wish lists in a couple of months.

Proud designs
After 17 years in the fashion industry, Jessy Heuvelink recently launched his own accessories label JH Nocturnal. We caught up with him for some quick questions Can you tell us a bit about yourself? – Well, I grew up in Amsterdam and I have worked with fashion my entire life, for brands such as Viktor & Rolf, Christian Lacroix and Adidas. In 2004, while I was designing Adidas’s sportswear in Germany, Johan Lindeberg called me up and asked me to work for J.Lindeberg in Stockholm. Since I had been working with sportswear for three years, I felt I was ready to make the move back to fashion. I moved to Sweden in February 2005, and was shocked to find the streets covered with two metres of snow – I wasn’t sure I had made the right decision. Of course, once spring and summer came about, I fell in love with Sweden. A couple of years later I met my husband here, and we have made Sweden our home. For the past four years, I have been the head designer for J.Lindeberg. In my spare time, I experiment with leather and create masks and other leather accessories. Leather is such an amazing material to work with and I can’t get enough of the intoxicating perfume it has. After 17 years in the fashion industry, I felt a need to express myself without the filter of a large brand, so I started JH Nocturnal, which is my own accessories label. How would you describe JH Nocturnal? – JH Nocturnal is the crystallization of everything that is in my mind. My feelings, thoughts and dreams expressed in the shape of accessories. The label reveals an entirely different side of me: one who loves leather, nature and insects, and who dares to be different. The designs are based on my personal needs, as I have been unable to find jewellery that I want to wear. I like leather and rock ’n’ roll, not those thin necklaces in precious metals – so those are the kind of products I created. I want JH Nocturnal to be a brand that can be worn by anyone: bankers, rock stars and fashionistas. Although I mainly focus on men’s fashion, the accessories are in fact all unisex. I have many female friends who like to wear JH Nocturnal.

The jewellery piece for this year’s Stockholm Pride Festival
The accessories are currently available on my website, and we’re looking to expand to retailers in the future. You also designed the official jewellery piece for this year’s Stockholm Pride Festival? – I did! The offer came completely out of the blue, and I was very surprised when they asked me. It is a very prestigious assignment, previously given to Efva Attling and Jean Paul Gaultier, among others. Of course, the timing couldn’t be more perfect, as I was in the midst of launching JH Nocturnal. My goal was to design a bracelet that would last for more than a couple of days, and I added the engraving “Celebrate Diversity” as a reminder to everyone that it’s OK to be different. After we unveiled the bracelet, I received an e-mail from a mother living in the US, who wanted to buy a bracelet for her 16-year-old son. That was probably my proudest moment during all of this.
“My plan is to keep creating beautiful great things, and to share them with the rest of the world.” What are your plans for the future? – My plan is to keep creating beautiful great things, and to share them with the rest of the world. One thing I really like about accessories is the fact that they are timeless. In fashion, you have to create a new collection every season, but with this label, I can add new products to a growing collection. I am also thinking about introducing wallets, shoes and bags, perhaps as early as next year – I am taking everything one step at a time.

Sound waves make up the backbone of our most vital and important impressions. Three tiny bones in our ears keep us informed of our surroundings, warn us of imminent danger and allow us to enjoy things such as music. In this issue of Z, we celebrate sound. By Max Doherty

uring the summer months of 1877, American inventor Thomas Edison was working tirelessly on an invention that could record and reproduce sound. A similar device, called the phonautograph, had been invented twenty years earlier and was able to record sound waves visually on sheets of paper. Of course, the goal soon became to reverse the process and turn the recording into sound. In 1878, Edison perfected the idea in the form of the phonograph. The first iteration of phonographs recorded sound on cylinders, but later versions would opt for the much more suitable rotating discs, patented by Emile Berliner, who renamed the invention the gramophone. Alas, much like the camera had enabled people to make visual recordings fifty years earlier, it was now possible to make audio recordings and have others listen to them many years later. Indeed, Edison’s first audio recording, in which he recites “Mary Had a Little Lamb, can still be found on Youtube.
56 | z lifestyle magazine
We now know how the recording and recreation of sound came about, but what is sound exactly? Well, a sound is a vibration in a gas, liquid or solid, which many animals have developed organs to identify and separate from one another. Sounds can vary in terms of loudness (measured in decibels) and pitch (measured in hertz), the latter of which is only available to us within a limited range. Sounds with a pitch of over 20,000 hertz cannot be heard by humans, and are called ultrasounds. However, ultrasounds can be heard by other animals, which has resulted in a couple of clever implementations. The most famous example is the dog whistle, made possible by the fact that dogs can hear sounds up to 40,000 hertz. Still, most people are mainly concerned with loudness, especially unwanted loudness. People talking too loudly, or playing loud music, are common sources of annoyance. Annoying as they may be, however, these

sounds pale in comparison to the Tunguska Meteor, which hit Russia in 1908 and caused a sound that exceeded 300 decibels – it is believed to have been the loudest event in recent history. Nevertheless, sound needs to travel through some form of matter, be it gas, liquid or solid, in order for us to hear it. In other words, a similar meteor crashing in a vacuum would not make any sound at all. In fact, modern films often make the mistake of depicting spaceships and rockets in space making noise, when, in fact, they should be completely silent. Speaking of travelling sounds, the speed of sound at standard atmospheric pressure is approximately 340 metres per second. This means that sound travels a kilometre in just over three seconds; a distance which light covers in an instant. As such, it is perfectly possible to measure the distance between you and a lightning bold by comparing the time between the flash and the thunder. For example, if it takes three seconds between the flash and the thunder, then the lightning struck one kilometre
from your location. The speed of sound is also what causes the so-called Doppler Effect, which is when two identical sounds from two identical distances sound different because of the direction in which the source of the sound is travelling. This is best manifested by the different sounds of emergency vehicles as they travel towards and away from you. Although much is known about sound, there are still research projects and future products underway that may change how we experience it. One of the most interesting inventions is ultrasound beams, used in products such as Audio Spotlight and Hypersonic Sound. These ultrasound beams make it possible to limit sound to a certain area, without having to isolate the area physically. Basically, if a regular speaker was a light bulb, the ultrasound beam would be a laser. It might sound like science fiction, and indeed most consumers have yet to experience it, but this has to potential to eliminate many of the annoyances we associate with sound.
Sound
“Certain music genres can improve one’s cognitive functions and motor skills.” For example, a visit to a restaurant can be ruined when you’re placed right next to the speaker; with this new type of speaker, all guests could decide their own individual volume. Of course, sounds aren’t just abstract vibrations in our surroundings; sounds can affect our pulse, our mood and even our health. Surveys have shown that our favourite sounds include the sound of rain against a window, boots threading through snow, waves hitting rocks by the shore, the popping and crackling from an open fire and a toddler’s laughter. Considering humankind’s aptness at taking things we like and recreate them, it was only a matter of time before someone, somewhere invented music. In fact, one of the definitions of music is “organized sound”. The first occurrences of music dates back to prehistoric eras, before people were able record their history in writing. From these eras, archaeologists have found flutes carved out of bone, for example. In later civilisations, the use of music notation meant that others could read and recreate musical pieces, in some cases as far back as 2000 BC. However, we weren’t able to recreate music from the past accurately until the 9th century, when sheet music could include instructions for melody, harmony, rhythm and tempo. Speaking of harmony and rhythm, certain music genres can improve one’s cognitive functions and motor skills, as well as maths skills. Moreover, listening to classical music such as Mozart has been shown to improve one’s chances of surviving an organ transplant; scientists believe that this is due to the four-four tempo, which is similar to the heartbeat. On the other hand, music that deviates from 60-80 beats per minute does not have this effect on one’s health. Instead, fast-paced music can have the opposite effect, making listeners restless and distracted – fast food restaurants use this type of music to make you finish your meal quicker. Being fascinated by “unwanted” music, a couple of researchers attempted to compose the most unpleasant song possible, with all the elements that people have claimed to dislike. The result is the 22 minutes long “The Most Unwanted Song”, which features relentless cowboy music, opera, rapping and a children’s choir – most people don’t make it past the twominute-mark. Sound is undoubtedly all around us. It affects our impressions, our mood and even our health, and we wouldn’t be the same without it.

nechoic chambers are designed to absorb all reflections of sound, rendering the room completely echo-free. Although materials such as curtains and carpets can be used to dampen the sound in a room, the goal here is to eliminate both external sound sources and internal echoes. Consequently, standing inside an anechoic chamber is like standing in an infinitely wide field, where the only source of sound is oneself. It gets very quiet. In fact, according to Guinness World Records, the quietest place on Earth is an anechoic chamber. The design is used in recording studios and, more recently, to measure radio frequencies.

ay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago is one of the city’s most recognizable sights, even though it was built just 10 years ago. Located in Millennium Park, the pavilion was named after Chicago businessman Jay Pritzker. The design of the venue is known as a bandshell, where the shape of the stage amplifies and directs the sound towards the audience. However, since this particular pavilion was built to accommodate up to 11,000 people, the shell is accompanied by speakers, fitted to poles above the lawn. Unlike conventional stages, where the people in front of the audience are exposed to much louder sound than those in the back, this solution creates an evenly distributed sound that has received critical acclaim. Locals come here for the annual Grant Park Music Festival, which is a 10-week classical music concert series that anyone can attend free-of-charge. The festival was introduced during the Great Depression in the 1930s to lift the spirits of the local population, and it has been a Chicago tradition ever since. Located within walking distance of Millennium Park is the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel Chicago. Known for its breath-taking façade, this hotel with 334 modern rooms and suites was the recipient of Trip Advisor’s 2014 Certificate of Excellence. www.radissonblu.com/aquahotel-chicago

et Sounds is the brainchild of artist Joel Cahen, who wanted to bring musical performances and lightshows below the water surface by holding his events at large, indoor swimming pools. The concept involves speakers both above and below water. Music from the loudspeakers bounce between the tile walls above water, while the water is filled with vibrations and tremors – you can literally feel the music. Sound travels more than four times faster under water, so the soundscape created here is completely different. Some attendees float in the water with their ears submerged, while others dive down towards the bottom of the pool. Wet Sounds mostly tour around the UK, but occasionally they organize performances abroad. For example, Wet Sounds visited Centralbadet in Stockholm a couple of years ago.

Tunisia has something for everyone, be it sandy beaches or pristine historical sites. It is also one of the more affordable destinations by the Mediterranean Sea.
O
ne of the world’s youngest democracies, Tunisia has worked hard to re-establish itself as North Africa’s most attractive tourist destination. Tunisia has something for everyone, be it sandy beaches or pristine historical sites. What’s more, Tunisia is one of the more affordable destinations by the Mediterranean Sea. The most common language in Tunisia is French and Arabic, but the younger crowd also speaks good English. In other words, the language is usually not a problem. In Tunisia, your best bet is to use cash. Although there are ATMs in the cities and most large establishments accept credit cards, you will want to bring cash if you visit the medinas. As with most tourist spots, you might come across devious taxi drivers. The most common excuse is that the fare meter is broken. However, if you tell them that you would like to use a different taxi, the fare meter magically starts working again. The large fashion brands are only sparsely represented in Tunisia, but there are many affordable options in the medinas. People are always looking to bargain, so a good rule of thumb is Tunisia is a country of contrasts, famous for its vast desert and stunning coastline.

to aim for half the asking price. Perfume is a popular purchase among tourists. Do not expect the fragrance to last the entire night, but the prices cannot be beat. Leather goods are one of the better investments here. You can find everything from purses to poufs, and a leather jacket costs less than half of what you would pay in Europe. The Tunisian cuisine consists of lamb, fish and shellfish, with egg being a common ingredient. Try the brik, which consists of egg and tuna in deep fried pastry, or ojja, which is scrambled eggs with spices. First-time visitors would be wise not to underestimate the harissa, which is Tunisia’s popular red condiment – it can be very hot. Moreover, if you are looking for a quick snack, fast-food vendors commonly serve brik. Hammamet
Hammamet is a lovely town just south of the capital city Tunis. The town is charming with its old medina and sunsets over the Atlas Mountains, and there is also the tourist-friendly Yasmine district, which the locals refer to as the New Old Town. The greatest sights here are the medina and the old fort. Right by the foot of the fort, by the beach, there is a coffee shop where you can smoke shisha, drink tea and enjoy the scenery. Another popular sight is the George Sebastian Villa, a luxury villa built in the 1920s by an affluent Tunisian that has housed many prominent guests, including Winston Churchill.

WEEKEND The Medina of Sousse, featured on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, should be on the to-do-list of any visitor.
The garden and pool areas in particular are well worth a visit. The best place to eat in Hammamet is probably Le Barberousse, located right at the top of the medina. This restaurant serves fruits de mer fused with the Tunisian cuisine, and has a great wine list. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon, as it allows you to gaze at the sunset while dining. Sousse
Sousse is Tunisia’s third largest city with around 200,000 inhabitants, and is far from a tourist trap. The Medina of Sousse, featured on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, should be on the to-do-list of any visitor. At the top of the medina, you will find the old castle, and on your way down you will come across lots of shopping opportunities in this ancient district. Do not be afraid to walk down the narrow paths; as long as you are walking downwards, you are heading in the right direction. The culture experiences in Sousse are also concentrated around the medina. At the top of the medina, you will find castle Ribat, where you can feel the winds of history blowing in the courtyard, and there are other famous sights such as the Kasbah of Sousse, the archaeology museum and the central mosque. Sousse is home to many restaurants, from small shacks to large western dining halls. Restaurant Café Seles, near the archaeology museum in the medina, is a personal favourite. You can recognize the restaurant by its light blue doors and window shutters that are so characteristic for Tunisia. This is a great place for experiencing the Tunisian cuisine at a low price, and the view from the roof terrace cannot be beat.
it grilled at one of the nearby restaurants. Ask the fishmongers who they recommend. Thalassotherapy, a spa treatment with saltwater, is incredibly popular on Djerba, and Carlson Rezidor has two resorts nearby that specializes in this very treatment. The vegetation in Djerba consists of palm trees, pomegranate trees, various cactuses and olive groves, surrounded by beaches and the clear, blue sea – a great complement to a relaxing spa treatment. Right in the middle of Zone Touristique, you will find Djerba’s best restaurant, Sidi Ali. This restaurant has a large fish menu that varies depending on the catch of the day. Skewers and other meat dishes are also on offer for those with allergies or young children.
Djerba
If you are in the mood for relaxation, spa and golfing, then the small island of Djerba is definitely worth checking out. This is probably the most “touristy” place in Tunisia, with lots of beaches and golf courses. Among the sightseeing highlights in Djerba, we find the town Houmt Souk, famous for its alleyways and its fish market. It is popular to purchase fresh fish at the market and have z lifestyle magazine | 81

There’s something about
Cameron She’s one of the most successful film stars of her age, but Cameron Diaz is still keenly aware just how different things might have been – and remains refreshingly open.
By Elaine Lipworth
Cameron Diaz is 41, an age that strikes fear into the heart of many an actress. Not this one. – It is the best time of my life. I love being this age, are you kidding? Not that Diaz looks her age, of course. Sitting bolt upright on a jade velvet sofa in an airy Los Angeles hotel suite, she is dressed in Rag & Bone jeans, a plain white T-shirt and oversized Isabel Marant cream cardigan; her tanned face is make-up free, her nails are scarlet and her blonde hair is scraped back in a tight bun. Lean and athletic, from rigorous hours logged at the gym, she is dazzlingly pretty, with sparkling blue eyes. No wonder she isn’t concerned about the passage of time. But Diaz, who last year co-wrote The Body Book, a self-help manual that encourages women to be more accepting about their appearance, goes further. – I can’t wait to be older, she says with an ear-to-ear dimpled smile. It’s an unusual thing to hear from an A-lister in Hollywood, where the cult of youth still rules supreme, though Diaz sees it differently. – This is something we really need to reframe. The most interesting parts are for women who are over 40. We don’t see it that way, because they’re not the sexy parts.

interview ner, hang out, watch movies… (She stops mid-sentence, distracted by the shimmering afternoon light pouring in through the window.) Oooh, look at the sun on the side of that building… So beautiful! It’s a typical Diaz moment. Sunny and spontaneous, she has an unshakeably optimistic perspective on life, which she puts down to a happy childhood in Long Beach, with her Anglo-German mother Billie, Cuban-American father Emilio and sister Chimene, who is married with four children. Her father died suddenly six years ago at the age of 58. – I miss my pop, but he is with me all the time, he’s a part of me. Everything I know comes from him and my mom. My dad encouraged us to do anything we wanted. I had amazing parents, they were awesome. We weren’t privileged – very much the opposite. My family would collect cans to turn in for extra money, because 20 dollars meant something to us. But we were a very happy. I grew up in the generation that still played outside, not like kids today. We were always riding our bikes, roller-skating or playing football in the middle of the street. There were memorable family road trips: – Five hours’ drive up to the Sequoia National Park. We used to go camping, because we couldn’t really afford to go on vacations. We never stayed in a hotel. We would set up a tent, go fishing and barbecue over the fire. And there were regular visits to her grandmother: – She was a huge influence on my life. She had livestock, a vegetable garden, she made her own clothes. On a Sunday morning, she’d go into the backyard and butcher a rabbit. We’d drive up and the rabbit would be in the pan. I grimace, which makes Diaz laugh. “That’s the best meat! Believe me, I was spoiled as a child,” she says. “Spoiled” might not be how most people would describe the way the Diaz sisters were raised. – Ever since I was four, I’ve been doing my laundry. I learnt to push a stool up to the washer and push the button that I couldn’t read. My dad thought that having children was really about the mentality of the farm. You have kids and they do all the hard work, they take out the trash and clean up the dog poop, do the dishes. Diaz attended a large inner-city school, which had barbed wire, metal detectors and a constant police presence. – It was stark and barren, but it was multicultural, and I think it gave me tools to relate to people and understand them. We had to learn to get along. Not that everybody did all of the time. There was violence. You have that many kids, there’s bound to be conflict. I learnt to be good at being friends with everyone. You have to be tough, especially when you’re a skinny white girl. Where I grew up, the options were slim to nothing. In any given year there were at least seven to 10 girls walking around school pregnant. A lot dropped out. A lot ended going to jail, dying or falling victim to drug abuse. But there were also a lot who pulled themselves out of it – like Snoop and I. She is referring to the rapper Snoop Dogg, who was also at the school.
“This film lets people know that women can champion one another.”
ook at the Oscar nominees in the last decade. (Diaz reels off a list that includes Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren and Dame Judi Dench) We’re not giving those women enough credit for what they’re accomplishing, which is beautiful performances. Solidarity among women is one of the themes of the comedy The Other Woman – available on Blu-ray and DVD in October – in which Diaz plays Carly, a lawyer who discovers that her charismatic boyfriend Mark (Danish Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) is married. She bonds with his wife, Kate (Leslie Mann), and together they discover a third woman in his life (the supermodel Kate Upton in her first substantial acting role). The trio set about taking revenge, spiking his drink with laxatives and replacing his shampoo with hair-removal cream. Set in New York, the Hamptons and the Bahamas and directed by Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook), the film is lavish and summery and full of slapstick and glamorous clothes. But Diaz is proud of what it has to say. – This film lets people know that women can champion one another; they don’t have to be competitive. It’s about the way these women get through that heartbreak and move forward. Sure, they take the low road for a second, but the story is all about their friendship. Over the years Diaz has been linked to Matt Dillon, Jared Leto, John Mayer and Justin Timberlake. Asked whether she has ever encountered a man like Mark, she arches her eyebrows. – I’m 41 years old. I’ve met them all. I think everyone, male or female, has been cheated on. Nobody gets out unscathed. We all behave badly; we all have people who behave badly towards us. But wherever there’s an end, there’s a new beginning. You never know who the next person that you’re going to meet will be, who you’re going to connect with. You can’t waste your time and energy on what could’ve been or what might’ve been. She refuses to say whether she’s dating anyone at the moment, but makes clear that her friends, including her Charlie’s Angels costar Drew Barrymore, play a big role in her life. – The wonderful thing about female friendship is that we are always rooting for one another. I ask whether she has made a conscious effort to stay in touch with her roots in order to handle success better. – The thing about fame is that it doesn’t change you – it actually makes you more of who you are. People who are famous are held more accountable than other human beings. You can’t go out into the world without somebody taking a picture and sharing it with everybody else. So you do your best to be the person that you want people to see you as. One thing her childhood did give her was a respect for money. – I come from a frugal upbringing so I’m not just going to throw my money away. I love to be close to my family and friends, so I spend money on plane tickets, having feasts, buying a ton of groceries and cooking, or going out for a beautiful meal, knowing I don’t worry about how much the bill cost. Diaz’s rise is well documented. A model as a teenager, at 22 she auditioned for The Mask (1994) and became an overnight success. She is now one of the industry’s top female earners (and reportedly the highest-paid actress over 40), and her films have made nearly 3 billion US dollars. There have been mainstream hits such as Bad Teacher (2011) and the Shrek franchise, but also riskier roles such as Being John Malkovich (1999), for which she was nomi88 | z lifestyle magazine
nated for a Golden Globe. Despite all her acting success, she regards her book as one of her biggest accomplishments: – I wrote it because a lot of women don’t see themselves as beautiful. Once you understand how your body works at a cellular level, you’re able to have the body you’re meant to. And I’m not talking about a body like mine that’s skinny, or a body you think is better than yours. I’m talking about having a real relationship with your own body. Neither does she have a fixed opinion on motherhood: – I’ve never said never to anything in life. If I wanted kids, at any point in life, I would have them. But I’m certain that if at any point I wanted a child, then that child would find its way into my life, whether through adoption, or through being in a relationship with somebody who has a child. I can’t see the future, but one thing I do know is that I’m not childless. I have a ton of children in my life. I can have a kid any second, if I want. All my friends would be like, ‘Sure, come and get them,’ she says with a laugh. – I also, by the way, have a lot of girl friends who don’t have children. It’s not like I’m the spinster who didn’t have a child. I just didn’t do that in life, and I’m OK with that. I know the choices I made. I know why I made them. I’m very much a person who lives in the moment. When you come from where I do, there are so many ways my life could have gone.
“The thing about fame is that it doesn’t change you, it actually makes you more of who you are.” Keeping watch over women’s rights
Since 2012, Cameron Diaz has been the ambassador for TAG Heuer’s Link Lady line of watches. Diaz has famously said that she wants her watch to be more than just a timepiece; it should be like her favourite piece of jewellery. The partnership between Cameron Diaz and TAG Heuer also extends to her involvement in women’s rights programs, including UN Women. For example, last year TAG Heuer unveiled the Cameron Diaz Link Lady Trilogy, where a portion of the proceeds was donated to UN Women. When asked about the collaboration in an interview, she said, “It means a lot to me that TAG Heuer shares my desire to bring attention to wonderful organizations like UN Women. I feel a responsibility to support women who are not free to pursue even the most basic goals, just because of their gender.”

With 530 km of wiring, 323,546 litres of fuel and countless tonnes of aluminium, carbon fibre and titanium, the Airbus A380 is definitely not your average aircraft. Z boarded an Air France A380 from Paris to Los Angeles to experience the world’s largest passenger aircraft first-hand. By Max Doherty
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, American aircraft manufacturer Boeing dominated the long-haul aircraft market. The company’s success was in many ways thanks to the high-capacity Boeing 747, which famously features an upper deck in the front section of the aircraft. In response to Boeing’s dominance on the market, and in an attempt to create a more efficient and larger high-capacity aircraft, the European competitor Airbus green-lit their own “ultra-high-capacity aircraft” project. Although this project was announced in 1990 at the Farnborough International Airshow, it wasn’t until ten years later, in December 2000, that the Airbus board of directors voted to begin production of what had now been named the Airbus A380. The name A380 was a deviation from Airbus’ previous progression of model names, which were numbered from A300 to A340. The reason the “8” was chosen was partly that it resembles the layout of the aircraft with two decks on top of one another, and partly that the number “8” is considered lucky in many Asian countries. The layout and structure of the Airbus A380 was the result of countless prototypes and over 200 focus group analyses. The aircraft has a two-deck configuration that can accommodate 538 Economy Class passengers on the lower deck and 315 Economy Class passengers on the top deck, for a total of 853 passengers in a single-class setting. There are also plans for a larger version of the A380 that can accommodate up to 960 Economy Class passengers in a single-class layout. However, most of the A380 aircrafts have somewhere around 525 seats in order to accommodate for the larger space required for Business Class and First Class cabins. Nevertheless, the A380 can accommodate a substantial number of passengers. The reason why some airlines want this larger capacity is that it reduces the number of take-off and landing slots needed at the airports, which is perhaps the scarcest asset in the industry. Considering this unprecedented number of passengers on a single aircraft, it is hardly surprising that the A380 is large – very large, in fact. The aircraft is 24.45 metres tall and has a length of 72.73 metres. What’s more, the wingspan is a whopping 80 metres.

making of The aircraft is 24.45 metres tall and has a length of 72.73 metres.
Construction takes place in several countries, including France, Germany, Spain and the UK. More impressively, the original plan was to have a wingspan of 90 metres, as this would have been the most efficient ratio, but the airports were simply too small. Despite the increase in size, however, the A380 emits 22% less carbon dioxide than the 747-400. Construction takes place in several European countries, including France, Germany, Spain and the UK, with the assembly being finalized in Toulouse, France. Two of the most prominent suppliers of components are Rolls-Royce and General Electric. Many of the parts, such as the wings, are too big for conventional transportation methods, and are instead transported by barges. This is also the reason why most of the production plants are located near harbours. The first A380 flight took place on 27 April 2005, when Airbus’ Chief Test Pilot Jacques Rosay flew the aircraft for 3 hours and 54 minutes. Rosay reportedly said that the experience was “like riding a bike”. However, before the finalized model was allowed to carry civilian passengers, a number of rigorous inspections had to be conducted. Following the maiden flight in 2005, Airbus conducted several test flights to countries around the world to test the A380’s performance at high altitude, at top speed and in harsh climates. It also involved the testing of the amount of pressure that the wings can handle before they break, not to mention the aircraft’s evacuation system. On 26 March 2006, Airbus passed an evacuation test in Hamburg where 853 passengers and 20 crewmembers evacuated the aircraft in 78 seconds – certification requires a time under 90 seconds – with all the lights turned off and with 50% of the exits blocked at random. That’s pretty impressive, considering the boarding time for the A380 is approximately 45 minutes. On March 29 that same year, both the EU’s and the US’s aviation safety agencies approved the A380 for flights with up to 853 passengers. The first A380 to enter into regular service was Singapore Airlines’ 9V-SKA, which flew from Singapore to Sidney on 25 October 2007. Singapore Airlines was followed by Emirates and Qantas in 2008, Air France in 2009 and Lufthansa in 2010. Since then, the Airbus A380 has also been acquired by Korean Air, China Southern Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, British Airways and Asiana Airlines. Since the A380 only operates on the most frequent routes, and is limited to airports that have specially designed terminals, it can be a bit tricky for Nordic travellers to fly with an A380. In fact, as there are only 135 A380 aircrafts in existence, it can be a bit tricky for anyone.

Air France was one of the very first carriers to introduce the Airbus A380.
96 | z lifestyle magazine
We were able to find an A380 flight operated by Air France, which flew from Challes de Gaulles in Paris to LAX in Los Angeles. This afforded us 11 hours of experiencing the world’s largest passenger aircraft first-hand. You notice that the A380 is something else even before you have boarded, as you are required to go to a special terminal with customized gates. The barrage of impressions continue once you’re inside, most noticeably during take-off. Since the A380 is so large, it is very difficult to estimate its speed; it feels like the aircraft travels at a snail’s pace as the aircraft races for take-off. Moreover, once you’re in the air you notice something else: the A380 is noticeably quiet. In fact, it is 50% quieter than the Boeing 747-400. There is also LED lighting, which creates a noticeable difference. Air France has programmed the lighting to help ease passengers into the new time zones, in order to minimize jet lag. Due to the width of the cabin, the A380 has unprecedented space for passengers to leave their seats and stretch their legs. At this particular Air France flight, there were three Economy Class snack bars, two Business Class bars and one First Class bar. All three classes have received an overhaul. For example, Economy Class has the widest seats of its class in any Air France aircraft. Moreover, the personal entertainment system comes packed with hundreds of films, both recent ones and classics, and thousands of songs. There is also a USB socket for charging anything that connects to a USB charger. On the upper deck is the Business Class cabin, where you’ll find 80 full-flat seats fitted with an ingenious storage solution as well as an electrical outlet for charging your laptop or smartphone. In addition, Business Class passengers exclusive access to the in-flight art gallery. In the front of the main deck is the First Class cabin, where nine stateof-the-art seats offer premium comfort. First Class passengers also have access to their own exclusive bar and buffet, where the vintage Champagne comes highly recommended. Furthermore, there is a changing area in the front of the cabin, where passengers can slip into something more comfortable before they make use of the cabin’s full-flat seats. After 11 hours of exploring the aircraft and enjoying the complimentary entertainment and drinks, it’s time to land at LAX. Exterior cameras show the landing from multiple views on the displays, adding an additional layer to the experience. If take-off felt somewhat discerning, this is the complete opposite; the perceived slow speed makes the landing soft and comfortable. Once we’ve landed and the aircraft is being taxied to the gate, a couple of the passengers notice a small, slowly moving object on the displays, about 50 metres in front of our aircraft. It turns out it’s another, regular-sized aircraft. Never has something so big felt so small.

Dubai is the glitzy, modern state with skyscrapers, grand malls
and fine dining. There is a saying that whatever you’re looking for, you can find it in Dubai. The Dubai experience is a kaleidoscope of attractions, from the calmness in the desert to the lively souk market. Once a hub for pearl diving, Dubai has become a gateway where East meets West. For the 21st century traveller, every week holds new experiences and surprises: a new mall, another skyscraper and countless concerts with world-leading artists. A visit to the world´s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, will literally take your breath away. Another impressive sight is the Dubai Fountain, which is illuminated by 6,600 lights and 50 coloured projectors. The shopping experience should definitely start in Dubai Mall, which is the world´s most frequented shopping and leisure destination with more than 70 million visitors per year. Whether you fancy a meal from Iran or the local cuisine, the food courts offer flavours from most corners of the world. Ski indoors, watch the latest films or just stroll around. In addition to Dubai Mall there are close to 70 other malls of all sizes in Dubai. The enjoyable weather, the great selection of festivals, concerts and nightlife, and the idea of finding everything in a relatively small place attracts millions of tourists each year. Dubai definitely has something for everyone.

The Hajar Mountains in Oman are a popular destination among tourists.
Oman
With more than 1,500 kilometres of coastline and deserts with silky sand dunes, this country is equally suited for leisure by the beach as for daring jeep excursions in the desert. The capital, Muscat, has modern malls and restaurants with food from all corners of the world. Of course, there are also markets where farmers, silversmiths and artisans haggle, albeit with a smile and a cup of tea ready. Tourists frequent the country’s traditional bazaar areas in search of incense, jewellery and silver daggers. For the nature lover, the Green Mountains offer a wide array of hiking, camping and climbing among waterfalls and lush valleys. Enjoying a lunch whilst overlooking the majestic mountains is truly an experience to remember. Salalah in the southern part of Oman has attracted many visitors in the last few years. This city is sprawling with coconut and banana trees, as well as stunning waterfalls. Unlike many other places in the Middle East, the weather in Salalah is relatively mild during the summer, which makes it ideal as a year-round destination. If you are more of a thrill seeker or just looking to explore the desert´s hidden secrets, Oman has a variety of things to do. Join a camel safari, participate in exhilarating dune bashing or have a go at sand boarding. 100 | z lifestyle magazine

There’s the pink and red Nabataean city of Petra, where Indiana Jones famously swung his whip; the Dead Sea, known for its healing powers; and the Bedouins’ Wadi Rum, made famous by Lawrence of Arabia. Kuwait In the north-eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula, we find Kuwait. The name Kuwait comes from the Arabic word akwat, which is a fortress built near the water. Indeed, Kuwait is located by the sea, with several inviting beaches. The sea has formed Kuwait as a nation, so much so that it is called the Marseille of the Persian Gulf. As a small country, Kuwait is heavily reliant on its international labour force. This has resulted in a generous variety of restaurants with food from all over the world – there are plenty of culinary opportunities. Perhaps surprisingly, Kuwait is also a great place for exercising. In Shuwaikh and Messila, you can enjoy the beach whilst working out on mechanical cross-trainers. Furthermore, Kuwait has a welcoming nightlife. After the evening prayer, you will find the streets close to Freedom Tower crowded with people, all of whom are having an Arabic coffee or tea – don’t be surprised if you’re invited to share a table with the locals. As with many Middle Eastern countries, Kuwait is a great source of historical sights. Take a ferry to the Failaka Island and enjoy the archaeological sites from the Bronze Age and Hellenistic period. Alexander the Great established an outpost on this island more than two thousand years ago. The island is a symbol for past and present, which is so typical for Kuwait. If, on the other hand, you wish to explore Kuwait’s future, then you should head to Green Island. It is an island covered with plants and trees in all the colours of the rainbow, where you can enjoy entertainment facilities such as concerts, theatre shows, pools and waterfalls. Outside Kuwait City, you can find the Souq Sharq mall with its countless western stores. Besides international shopping, Souq Sharq also holds various festivals throughout the year to support and boost the local culture. Take a break and enjoy the panoramic views over the Marina.

The city of Doha is home to the massive shopping mall Villaggio, which has its own indoor theme park.
Qatar Further south on the Arabian Peninsula we find Qatar. The
capital city Doha is a cosmopolitan hub with plenty of things to do. Besides world-class golf, you can go bicycling for miles on end along the desert roads, relax by the beach or even go fossil hunting. During the last decade, Qatar has built lavish museums and is aiming to become the new cultural capital of the Middle East. You can easily enjoy a good night out listening to jazz at the Lincoln Centre, spend time in one of the many lush green areas and parks and, of course, participate in sporting activities. Sports have always played an important role in the lives of Qatar´s residents. Some of the biggest sporting events in the world have been, or will be, held in Qatar, such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The peninsula of Qatar has beaches covering more than 500 kilometres of sandy coastline. Along the coastline, there are numerous small islets and reefs, all surrounded by exceptionally clear and clean blue water. A good way to see parts of the coastline and the sea is to travel by dhow, which is a traditional boat. The dhow has been used for hundreds of years as a traditional sailing vessel in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean region. Some scholars believe that the dhow originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. Moreover, the dhow offers an excellent opportunity to visit the picturesque Safliya Island. Qatar’s past is still visible in its architectural features, which also serve as national symbols; one great example is the wind towers that served to cool homes before the introduction of electricity. Camels, falcons, sailing vessels and pearl diving equipment are still in use here. To sum up, a visit to Qatar entails quality leisure time, history and innovation at the same time.

Connecting
Europe
In this issue of Z, we take a closer look at KLM and British Airways, two airlines that have connected a significant share of the European population with the rest of the world. By Max Doherty
KLM, also known as the Royal Dutch Airlines, has been a national treasure of the Netherlands for nearly 95 years. In 2004, KLM merged with Air France, creating Europe’s biggest network of long-haul departures whilst still operating as individual brands. When Z spoke with Ryanne van der Eijk, General Manager North Europe at AFKLM, earlier this year, she told us that the group is pursuing a dual-hub strategy, with Schiphol in Amsterdam and Charles de Gaulle in Paris as their two most important and most frequently used airports. Nevertheless, due to inherent differences between the countries, the two airlines also have slightly different profiles. For example, since France is a large country with a population of 80 million, there is a high demand for domestic flights. The Netherlands, on the other hand, is a much smaller country where you can travel to most cities by car. Consequently, KLM offers a smaller selection of domestic flights and a larger proportion of international flights. This selection includes 56 daily departures from Nordic destinations. Together with sister airline Air France, the number of departures reaches 78, and connecting flights from Schiphol and Charles de Gaulle connect the Nordics to destinations all around the world. In order to experience the airline first-hand, Z flew with KLM from Los Angeles to Amsterdam. It immediately became apparent

“KLM has been a national treasure of the Netherlands for nearly 95 years.” that despite being a multinational heavyweight, KLM is still very down-to-earth. The multilingual staff is friendly and efficient, serving hot meals and complimentary drinks, and the entertainment selection was second-to-none. A fun fact: one of the flight attendants explained why it always take less time to travel from the US to Europe than it does to travel from Europe to the US, an hour less in this case. Apparently, there are high altitude winds over the Atlantic that always travel from west to east, making one direction faster than the other. A connecting flight awaits at Schiphol, but there is plenty of time to try out one of KLM’s many Crown Lounges at the airport. Schiphol is surprisingly tranquil, which distinguishes it from many similarly sized hubs. Walking from the gate to the lounge is a relaxed, streamlined experience, the airport’s large size notwithstanding. Available at several locations at Schiphol, as well as many international airports, the Crown Lounges are open to all business class travellers and Flying Blue Elite members. In addition to high-speed Wi-Fi and complementary magazines and newspapers, the stylish lounge houses amenities such as shower rooms, computers and a generous selection of food and drinks. Those who arrive in the morning are treated to a breakfast buffet, and there is always freshly made soup and bread. Speaking of business class, business travellers can look forward

to KLM’s new lie-flat seats, which were introduced on long-haul flights earlier this year. Another interesting new feature is KLM’s integration of social media in its booking system. This means that you can use social media services like Facebook and Twitter to purchase tickets and upgrades, making for a seamless customer experience. British Airways
British Airways is one of the leading premium airlines in the world, with a fleet of more than 270 aircrafts. Operating through its main hub, London Heathrow Airport, British Airways has regular flights to and from the largest Nordic cities. This includes Stockholm and Gothenburg in Sweden; Oslo, Stavanger and Bergen in Norway; Copenhagen in Denmark and Helsinki in Finland. Furthermore, since all of these routes are connected via London Heathrow Airport, Nordic travellers can reach over 70 different countries with British Airways. In order to learn more about British Airways, Z got in touch with Peter Rasmussen, British Airways’ Regional Commercial Manager, Northern Europe. What separates British Airways from other airlines? – British Airways is a customer-oriented airline. As such, we don’t offer cheap-looking basic fares with a long list of addons, and we don’t charge you extra for booking by debit card.
airlines
“We don’t offer cheap-looking basic fares with a long list of add-ons.” Instead, we offer all passengers free drinks and snacks, regardless of their type of ticket. We are also very generous when it comes to hand luggage. You can bring two bags of 23 kg each, and a checked luggage of 23 kg. Again, this applies to all passengers. In addition, we fly to mainstream airports, close to the destination you want. Another important aspect of British Airways is our Responsible Flying for Everyone program, the goal of which is to address the climate change impacts and to reduce the net carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2050. We are testing new alternative fuels with Rolls-Royce in order to reduce aviation’s impact on the environment and we are investing in new aircrafts that produce up to 30 percent less carbon emissions than the aircraft they are replacing. How does British Airways cater to business travellers? – We customize our range of services in accordance with our customers’ needs. For example, we have found that most business travellers want to spend as little time as possible in queues. Therefore, we offer business class travellers services such as priority boarding and quick security checks, as well as an empty middle seat on short haul, complimentary newspapers, free drinks and much more. In
addition, we offer fully flat beds to long-haul business class travellers. Furthermore, business class travellers and holders of the Gold and Silver cards in our Executive Club loyalty program have access to our lounges. Is British Airways introducing any new services or routes in 2014? – Yes, we will be adding five new A380 aircrafts this year to improve customers’ experience in the air and on the ground. The aircraft’s innovative design makes it much quieter during take-off and landing, not to mention 16 percent more fuel efficient than the aircraft it replaces. Our new A380s will join our super-jumbo fleet, which flies twice daily to Los Angeles, daily to Hong Kong, six times a week to Johannesburg and later this year, five times a week to Washington D.C. Furthermore, we are upgrading the interiors in 95 of our short-haul aircrafts, which includes the flights to and from the Nordics. The new interiors will feature elegant leather seats, tablet holders and greatly improved headrests. This overhaul will further enhance our new Day Tripper selection, which allows our customers to travel to and from London during the same day – perfect for day trips!

It runs in the
family
Remy Merckx has been in the hospitality industry ever since he was born, literally. These days, he is working to facilitate Carlson Rezidor’s online bookings, customer relations and social media outreach.
Title: Vice President Digital Marketing, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group Age: 42 Resides in: Brussels, Belgium Motto: Less is more
124 | z lifestyle magazine
What did you do before joining Carlson Rezidor? – I have been a hotelier since I was born (in a hotel)! My parents ran a family hotel and I grew up learning the joys of the trade. When I grew up, I decided to study hotel management, and started working at hotels like Sheraton, Conrad and Holiday Inn. In 2001, I came across an opportunity to join a start-up company called Expedia, which has grown to become the largest online travel agency in the world. I worked with Expedia for ten years before I decided to go back to my hotel roots in 2010 for Accor. Three years later, I joined Carlson Rezidor. What are your responsibilities at Carlson Rezidor? – I am in charge of the digital marketing in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, which includes our entire digital platforms. We work on four main areas: e-commerce, social media, partnerships and customer relationship management (CRM). What is the most important aspect of the digital platform? – Although all parts of the digital marketing are important, e-commerce is arguably the most crucial aspect. Increasingly more people book their hotels online, and whenever one of our customers switches from the offline world to the online booking, we have to make sure that he or she can find and book on our own branded websites. Of course the online market also allows us to go after a lot of new customers that did not know about our hotel brands before. From there, we will work hard to convert these customers from lookers to bookers. How do you incorporate social media into your digital platform? – The way we communicate with our customers has changed significantly. It used to be that our customers would come to us, but these days we have to reach out to them – and one of the ways to do so is through social media channels. If our customers use services such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, then we have to be able to serve this customer need on these social communities. What can you tell us about your customer relationship management? – We still use both digital and traditional communication channels. However, we are setting up a unified customer view profile through a new CRM tool. That way, whatever channel our customers are using, we will be able to communicate with them as single and specific customers. What are your goals for Carlson Rezidor in the coming years? – The Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group has really embraced the digital side of the business, and we will focus a lot more on our digital platforms in the coming years. We will work to improve our digital infrastructure, increase our presence online and boost our internal competency with regard to digital marketing. The goal is that our branded channels will drive up to 30% of our revenues within the next two to three years.

Reismedbarn.no is a Norwegian website about travelling with children. The website was founded by two mothers, Charlotte Edøy and Jannecke Weeden, who wanted to create a place where people could share their experiences about destinations, attractions, places to stay and general tips for making travelling with children easier and more enjoyable. In addition to reismedbarn.no, you can also find Charlotte and Jannecke in Z Magazine with their vignette Child’s Play.

Flying with children can be a daunting experience. They have to sit in the same place for an extended period of time, and the flight can be physically exhausting. Fortunately, there are a couple of clever methods to make your time in the sky much more enjoyable. Before you go Make sure that your children are prepared for the flight. Tell them that they will be flying high above the trees and houses, and explain for how long they will have to remain seated. Will it be for the same length of time as a film or more like a day at nursery? Let them pack their own suitcase with their favourite toys. We have found that children feel important when they are given tasks. In addition, they have no one else to blame but themselves if something is left at home, so tantrums are much less likely. Carlson Rezidor has several hotels by the Nordic airports, including Radisson Blu Airport Hotel, Oslo Gardermoen; Park Inn by Radisson Oslo Airport Gardermoen Hotel; Radisson Blu SkyCity Hotel, Arlanda Airport; Radisson Blu Arlandia Hotel, Stockholm; and Park Inn by Radisson Copenhagen Airport Hotel.
At the airport
Did you know that most airlines allow you to take your stroller all the way to the gate? Once you’re there, you simply hand over the stroller to the staff, who will put it with your other luggage. Furthermore, you are allowed to bring baby food and drinks through security, although they might ask you to taste it first. In other words, if your child prefers a special kind of formula, porridge or juice, then the airport staff will usually be helpful and understanding. Finally, find out where the play area
is located; most airports have a place where children can burn off some energy before boarding. In the air
Most airlines have a separate children’s menu that they serve first, which is great as children with low blood sugar can be quite a handful. You should also bring a small, healthy selection of snacks just in case. Do not let children play between the seat rows, as this is the cabin crew’s work environment. Large, heavy trolleys do not go well with children playing in the same space. The sound of an aircraft can be quite soporific, so bring a small, inflatable pillow to put under your sleeping child’s head. If the child is comfortable, the nap may last a bit longer. Under pressure
Sometimes, toddlers will be upset without any way of telling you what is wrong. This might be pressure in their ears, which is quite common during flights and hurts a lot. The younger your child is, the more difficult the pressure can get. However, there are ways to help alleviate the child’s pain. If you still breastfeed, this would be the right time to bring out the milk. You can also try to create a kind of vacuum by folding your hands over the child’s ears. Chewing gum can help, so buy a package of bubble gum and let the kids chew excessively. If nothing else, the distraction will take attention away from the pain. There is also a lesser known, but highly effective method to combat unwanted air pressure. Ask for two cups, some tissue paper and some hot water; wet the tissue paper and put it in the bottom of each cup; and put the cups over your child’s ears (make sure the water isn’t too hot). Many cabin crew members refer to this as “Mickey Mouse ears”.

A tincture of
MADNEss
In Gothenburg’s science district, we find the immaculate Radisson Blu Riverside Hotel and its flagship restaurant Cuckoo’s Nest. Z caught up with Malin Franck, General Manager of the Radisson Blu Riverside Hotel, Gothenburg and Josefine Thelin, Restaurant Manager of Cuckoo’s Nest to explore the culinary borderland between genius and madness. Lindholmen used to be a shipyard district in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city. These days, however, sailors and stockroom workers have been replaced by scientists, researchers and a large number of engineers. The Lindholmen Science Park, the centrepiece of the district, has become one of the world’s greatest melting pots of science and technology, and it is here that we find Cuckoo’s Nest. Malin Franck, General Manager of the Radisson Blu Riverside Hotel, Gothenburg, told us about the restaurant’s concept: – Cuckoo’s Nest balances on the thin line between genius and madness. This is a place where visionaries and innovators can meet and exchange ideas in an inspiring setting. The name itself comes from the novel and film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and we are firm believers in the theory that success requires a tincture of madness. According to Josefine Thelin, Restaurant Manager at Cuckoo’s Nest, around 80% of their customers are business travellers, and they have many customers from the nearby Lindholmen Science Park. In order to reflect the creativity and high demands of their guests, a lot of effort has gone into the restaurant’s menu. – We have incorporated a bit of madness in our menu, to add some spark to the meals. We always strive to surprise our guests, in a playful way, and our menu is a reflection of that. We have sought inspiration from all parts of the world, resulting in an international menu with a wide variety of dishes, Josefine Thelin explains.
Cuckoo’s Nest recently updated its menu, which now features many of the treats found by the Swedish west coast during the summer and early autumn. Josefine told us more: – My favourite new item on the menu is probably the European plaice, and I can also recommend the asparagus and salmon from our starters menu. A brilliant meal is best enjoyed in a brilliant setting, and Cuckoo’s Nest definitely has you covered. For example, Cuckoo’s Nest has an outdoor patio by the bay, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner or a cocktail. In addition, the restaurant interiors are something else. Malin Franck explained the thought process behind the extravagant decorations: – For the interiors of Cuckoo’s Nest, we sought inspiration from the laboratories and halls of prestigious, old universities, akin to what you would see in the film A Beautiful Mind. There are formulas and calculations on the walls, and we have even designed our own conspiracy theory wall as an homage to the film. Everything here is in a bit of a mess, without any uniform lines. It is definitely not your usual hotel restaurant. In addition to the restaurant, Cuckoo’s Nest also has a splendid bar. In fact, Cuckoo’s Nest received an award for Best Bar 2013 at the European Hotel Design Awards. – Our modern bartenders are mixologists, who in addition to tending the bar create their own ingredients and experiment with new flavours. Our mixologist Thomas Jordansson comes highly recommended if you would like to try some exciting new cocktails, Malin Franck concludes.

The latest exhibition at Nordiska Museet in Stockholm takes on the cleansing topic of bathrooms, featuring photographs taken by the likes of Karl Heinz Hernried and Karl Erik Granath. This is the third exhibition in a series centred on the rooms of the Swedish Welfare State, and is undoubtedly one of the most intimate. Although an obligatory part of modern homes, bathrooms were considered a luxury as little as 70 years ago. Since then, function has been replaced by form, as universal standards became ever more common. The exhibition, which is held from 16 August to 7 December, is a visual representation of this evolution and a tribute to one of the most important rooms of any home. A breath
of fresh air Paul Sundvik, whose underwater photography was featured in Z Magazine No.3/2014, will be showcasing his works this autumn. In the exhibition, called “A surreal journey into the blue”, Paul Sundvik documents air bubbles as they rise toward the water surface. The exhibition will be held at Taverna Brillo in Stockholm on 12 October, among other places. More information can be found at www.free-flow.se
Walk down memory lane The National Gallery of Denmark has teamed up with Danish-Norwegian duo Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset for the aptly named exhibition Elmgreen & Dragset. The Copenhagen-based art gallery, which is considered one of the best in the Nordics, will take its visitors on a journey through the duo’s body of work over the past twenty years. The journey begins in 1995, when the duo started making a name for themselves with risqué performance art, and goes all the way to the present day. Open from 19 September to 4 January.

The artist has been booked for shows in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, as well as three back-toback performances in London, just to name a few. Mixing tracks from her latest album with hits from the past, Lady Gaga’s show features spectacular choreography, special effects and – of course – unforgettable vocals.
midlife crisis Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen is the world’s second most performed dramatist, bested only by Shakespeare. One of his most famous works, Peer Gynt, tells the story of a young man who kidnaps a brideto-be, gets chased by trolls in a mountain hall and later engages in questionable trades around the Mediterranean Sea. The work was accompanied by an equally famous soundtrack by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Director Alexander Mørk-Eidem has sought to reimagine the story of Peer Gynt for modern-day Norway, where a middle-aged Peer Gynt is addressing the Norwegian public in the most effective way possible: on television with Norwegian talk show host Fredrik Skavlan. The director has sought to find out whether the Norwegian public still finds Gynt’s acts of cynicism and selfishness regrettable, or if the country has entered the same midlife crisis as the main character. Peer Gynt is performed at the National Theatre in Oslo between 9 August and 16 October.

Scream
Back in 1995, someone had the brilliant idea of making a music video with Michael Jackson and his sister Janet Jackson on a desolate spaceship, shot in black-and-white and inspired by Japanese Anime. The result was a trippy, out-of-this-world hit that is still considered one of the all-time greatest music videos. At the time it was the most expensive music video ever made, and although the computer animations might look a bit dated, “Scream” still holds up surprisingly well.

Happy FEET
Every September, the sound of thousands of running shoes pushing against asphalt can be heard across Europe, as the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group’s employees and managers work up a sweat in charity runs and countless other activities. Z Magazine caught up with Inge Huijbrechts, Vice President Responsible Business at The Rezidor Hotel Group, to learn more.
September is the Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group’s Responsible Business Action Month, where hotels around the world organize charity events and activities. Examples include The Box Appeal in the Middle East, where hotels send boxes of necessities to migrant workers; guests making charitable donations of their Club Carlson loyalty points; blood donations; beach cleaning; providing food to the homeless; supporting the local shelters; internships for underprivileged children; and much more. One of the most popular activities during the Responsible Business Action Month is running for charity. Inge Huijbrechts explains: – We believe that a healthy mind in a healthy body allows us to deliver 24/7 Yes I Can! service. The Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group has 35,000 employees in 70 countries across EMEA, and many of them love doing sports – even more so, when it is for a good cause. This year marks the 11th iteration of the group’s Responsible Business Action Month, which will be celebrated with hundreds of activities. In the Nordics, the hotels hold their Walk & Run events during the Responsible Business Action Month, where employees, family and friends raise money for the World Childhood Foundation, Carlson Rezidor’s global corporate charity partner. Last year, the hotels in the Nordics raised more than 18,000 euros during these events. Says Inge Huijbrechts:
– Although September is the official Responsible Business Action Month, our hotels organize charity events throughout the year. For example, in January and February this year, four of our colleagues from Latvia cycled 2,800 kilometres from Riga to Sochi in freezing cold weather in order to raise funds for a children’s hospital in Riga. We also had several female employees from Carlson Rezidor’s hotels in France who participated in La Parisienne, a charity run for breast cancer treatment. Sometimes, the employees organize these runs independently. Four years ago, Wojciech Liszka, Director of Sales and Marketing of the Radisson Blu Hotel and Tony Roberts-York, CEO of UBS Poland Service Centre wanted to use their passion for running to raise money to fund prostheses for local teenagers with disabilities. Last year, 4,600 runners participated in their nationwide charity event in Poland. The event raised 90,000 euros, which allowed them to buy artificial limbs for five people. The Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group also participates in the annual Brussels 20-kilometre run. This year, 70 runners from the group’s Head Office (including the group’s COO, Olivier Harnisch) and Benelux hotel teams ran together and raised 11,000 euros for the Wold Childhood Foundation. Lastly, Inge Huijbrechts had some exciting news to share: – As one of the fastest growing hospitality companies in the world, fast pace and speed has always been a part of Carlson Rezidor’s DNA. We have just launched the #BluRoutes fitness programme for the Radisson Blu hotel chain. #BluRoutes are safe running and cycling routes for guests to follow that start and end at Radisson Blu hotels throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. All #BluRoutes were designed and plotted by members of staff from each hotel. Few business leaders have been so associated with a brand as Steven Jobs has been with Apple: the company he founded, left and later turned into the world’s most successful. During a turbulent career, he changed the way people viewed consumer electronics, animated film and music distribution, not to mention the way we communicate with one another. This is the story of the icon Steve Jobs. By Max Doherty

Icon Unemployed, but with lots of money to spare, Steve Jobs would soon enter the next chapter in his personal success story. He founded the computer business Next and bought an animation studio from Star Wars director George Lucas for 10 million US dollars. The studio, which was renamed Pixar, had its first big breakthrough with the short film Luxo Jr. The main character was a charming desk lamp, which now has a permanent place in the company’s logo. However, despite the success, the company didn’t turn a profit, and Jobs had to pour in additional funds.
The turning point came with the film Toy Story, which was followed by many more blockbusters. Disney subsequently decided to buy Pixar, and Jobs became a dollar billionaire.
Unfortunately, it didn’t go as well for computer manufacturer Next. Their computers were deemed too expensive, and the demand simply wasn’t there. However, Next had developed an operating system that interested another company, namely Apple. In 1996, Apple bought Next and its operating system – seven months later, Steve Jobs was back as Apple’s CEO. At the time, Apple was a company on decline. While IBM’s PC won market shares, Apple’s situation become increasingly critical, not least after Microsoft released the Windows 95 operating system. Apple had an unfocused range of product, including more than ten versions of the Macintosh and the unsuccessful handheld device Newton. When Steve Jobs reclaimed the CEO

position, he explained the problem by drawing a matrix consisting of two rows and two columns. On one axis he wrote “stationary” and “portable”, and on the other he wrote “consumer” and “professional”. Apple was to focus on two stationary computers and two laptops, each of which would have a consumer version and a “pro” version. All other products were to be cancelled or sold off, including the company’s laser printers and servers. Apple’s great comeback came in 1998 with the colourful, minimalist, semi-transparent iMac; the next year they released the portable equivalent iBook. As computers had always been grey or black square boxes, the light blue, roundish iMac certainly stood out. The peculiar style was the work of British designed Jonathan Ive, whom Steve Jobs would later refer to as his “spiritual partner at Apple”. Ive has also designed Apple’s more recent products. Officially, the “i” in the product name stands for “Internet”, but when the concept was pitched for Steve Jobs the design team also used words like “individual” and “imagination”. After he had listened to the pitch, Jobs told the team that he

Some of Steve Jobs’ most memorable moments happened during his legendary keynote speaches.
“If you really look closely, most overnight successes took a long time.” hated the idea and sent them back to the drawing-table. One week later, at a follow-up meeting, Jobs told the team “I don’t hate the name this week, but I still don’t like it”. The next day, Jobs presented the iMac name to his closest colleagues. Although Apple distinguished itself as a computer manufacturer for 25 years, the company experienced its biggest success when it entered the music industry in 2001, first with the portable music player iPod and two years later with the online distribution service iTunes Store. The early 2000s had been difficult for the music industry, not least because of file sharing software such as Napster. Still, there weren’t any particularly good legal alternatives. For example, record companies refused to sell individual songs, as their business model was to sell expensive albums with a small number of hits and a larger number of “fillers”. Moreover, the record companies wanted to have exclusive rights to sell music from their own artists, which resulted in a fragmented selection on the various services. In other words, it was far from certain that Apple would be able to create a comprehensive online music store, especially since one of the largest record companies, Sony, had their own portable music players and were developing their own online service. In the end, iTunes Store was made possible by Steve Jobs visiting the record companies in person and convincing them to licence their songs to Apple. A similar transformation of Apple’s core business took place in January 2007, when Steve Jobs presented the most memorable

product in the company’s history, the iPhone. This phone was able to make calls, play music and surf the web. Initially, some co-workers at Apple had protested the choice to include a music player in the iPhone, as it could disrupt the sales of their iPod. Jobs countered by saying: “If we don’t cannibalize on our sales, then someone else will”. Jobs displayed a similar determination when he refused to include a stylus or a keyboard, akin to the ones found in the Palm Pilot and Blackberry. Instead, Apple’s product would consist solely of a large touchscreen. The iPhone was released in June 2007 and became an instant success. Three years later, Apple launched the iPad tablet, and the rest is, as they say, history. Even though Apple’s transformation under Steve Jobs is an incredible success story, his leadership style left a lot to be desired. He was known for his aggressive outburst, and would often scold his co-workers in public. He tended to see the world in black and white: his co-workers were either geniuses or “bozos”. At the same time, Jobs had an ability to bring out the best from his colleagues, not least thanks to his charm and charisma. There is no doubt that Steve Jobs is one of the most successful and iconic entrepreneurs of our time. He has had a bigger impact on how we purchase and listen to music, and how we communicate with one another, than perhaps any other human being. When Jobs passed away in 2011, after several years of fighting cancer, he left behind a wife, four children, and one of the highest valued companies of all time.

For the past three years, visitors to Stockholm have been greeted by the sight of the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel and Waterfront Congress Centre. Many of the rooms in the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Stockholm overlook the Stockholm City Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquet is held once a year.
“The location is about as central as you can get in Stockholm, right by the Riddarfjärden Bay and close to many of the city’s most famous sights.” During the first years of the 2000s, the City of Stockholm began researching the possibilities of giving the city a much needed, centrally located conference facility. At the time, the favoured location was occupied by a sterile postal terminal, so when the project was announced in 2008, the goal was to create “a new pearl in the city”. The finished result, however, rather resembles a sparkling piece of silver jewellery, with its distinct crown facing the water. Due to the buildings’ proximity to the Stockholm City Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquet is held once a year, some voices were raised regarding the project’s impact on the Stockholm skyline. Fortunately, the finished Waterfront buildings are tastefully complementing, rather than dominating, the scenery. The Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Stockholm opened in January 2011, making it one of the newest and most modern hotels in the country. The structure itself is massive, consisting of more than 6,700 square metres of stone, 3,000 tonnes of steel and 14,500 square metres of glass. The building’s most distinct feature is its crown, “The Crown of Lake Mälaren”, which is made of over 21 kilometres of stainless steel bars. The crown’s polished surface makes for a visually stunning, semi-transparent façade, reminiscent of the famous Aurora Borealis. The Waterfront buildings were designed by White Arkitekter,
154 | z lifestyle magazine
which is one of the leading architect firms in the Nordics. The architects opted for a curtain wall construction for many of the façades, using large glass surfaces and ceramic plates imported from Italy. The hotel section of the Waterfront building provides a contrast to the much more complex structure of the congress centre. The hotel stands 55 metres tall, with thirty rooms per floor and three suites on the top floor. What’s most impressive about the building, however, is its energy efficiency. By using the sun to heat the building, and the nearby water to cool it, White Arkitekter managed to make the building twice as energy efficient as the EU Standards. The location is about as central as you can get in Stockholm, right by the Riddarfjärden Bay and mere minutes from many of the city’s most famous sights. The closest sight is also one of the most famous, the aforementioned Stockholm City Hall. Furthermore, the hotel is within walking distance from Stockholm’s Old Town, as well as the Royal Palace. The benefit of the location is further enhanced by the fact that there are escalators that take you directly from the hotel to the Central Station. In addition, since the Central Station has the Arlanda Express service to Arlanda Airport, you can travel from the hotel to the airport in 20 minutes without ever stepping outside.
architecture & design Carlson Rezidor hired one of the world’s leading interior design firms, RPW Design, for the interior parts of the hotel. RPW Design, in turn, decided on a Nordic style for the interior, with generous use of wood in various shades. This style becomes apparent as soon as you step into the lobby. First impressions matter, so it should come as no surprise that the lobby often get a large share of the designer’s attention. Here, you are greeted by colourful leather contrasted against stonewalls on one side and wooden walls on the other. It is also here that you will find the lobby bar, which is well known for its atmosphere and its open fire. The rooms are where many guests spend most of their time at a hotel, so it is fortunate, then, that all the rooms at the Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Stockholm, have generous views of the city. Some of the rooms overlook the Riddarfjärden Bay and the southern parts of Stockholm, while others treat their guests to a view of the city centre, with its many landmarks. The 414 rooms and suites have a sense of openness to them, with large windows that let in generous amounts of light, which reflect beautifully against the many wooden surfaces. Of course, free Wi-Fi connections are available in all rooms. The three hotel suites are even more spectacular, with panoramic windows overlooking Lake Mälaren and the City Hall. The largest suite spans an impressive 74 square metres, and features a double bed, two bathrooms and a living room.

“Located right next to the hotel, the Waterfront Congress Centre has become immensely popular.” The Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Stockholm, houses the RBG Bar & Grill restaurant, where guests can enjoy traditional Swedish dishes with an international twist, all while enjoying the view of Lake Mälaren. Every morning, this restaurant serves one of the best breakfast buffets in Stockholm, providing a great start of the day. In addition, there is also the aforementioned Lobby Bar, where guests can relax with cocktails and snacks in front of an open fire. Located right next door to the hotel, the Waterfront Congress Centre has become immensely popular among large companies and event organisers. Here, up to 3,000 delegates can take part in events ranging from trade fares to rock concerts. The Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Stockholm, and the Waterfront Congress Centre are promising signs of things to come. There are plans to cover up the open railway tracks around the Central Station in order to make the area more accessible and provide space for new flats, offices and shops, and to connect the Kungsholmen district with the city centre. It will certainly be interesting to see how the vision pans out ten years from now, and we can be sure of one thing: The Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel will be there to play a central role.

Z Magazine had a quick chat with Hans Forsmark of White Arkitekter, who was one of the architects in charge of designing the Waterfront buildings. How did you envision the Waterfront buildings? – Our vision was to create three different buildings within the Waterfront concept, with three different functions: we had an accessible office building, a hotel with great views and a congress centre that could accommodate up to 3,000 guests. How did you make use of the location? – The location was unique in many ways. The views became our point of reference, both when we outlined the functions and when we designed the facades. In addition, we used the sun to heat the building, and water from Riddarfjärden to cool it. Did you encounter any challenges? – There were plenty of challenges, not least since the building was to be located right next to the City Hall. A lot of diplomacy and patience was needed. In addition, it was a significant challenge to realize the billowing, embracing crown in stainless steel. What is your favourite aspect of the Waterfront buildings? – I like the way the crown interacts with the light, and how it changes when the light moves around it. I am also enamoured of the views from the hotel rooms, and the fact that the buildings introduce a sense of grandness and urbanity in a previously lifeless part of Stockholm.

A
lot has happened since BMW acquired the iconic British car manufacturer Mini in 1994. The Mini was originally born in 1959 at the British Motor Corporation, and went by names such as Morris, Austin, Wolseley and Riley before becoming Mini in 1969. Manufacturing was conducted in many parts of the world, including Spain, Australia, South Africa, Venezuela, Chile and, of course, the UK. However, it wasn’t until Toyota helped launch the “new” Mini in 2001 that the brand really took off. The shapes were directly inspired by the original model, and its darling attitude would soon give rise to many new Mini owners, cementing the Mini’s status as an icon. After approximately 13 years in the limelight, the “new” Mini has played its part and it is time to replace this trendsetter. However, pulling off such a feat has been far from easy. In order to create a new and improved generation of the Mini, a lot of thought has gone into the safety aspects of the car. For example, there is an emergency brake system aimed at protecting pedestrians, and the front has been lowered in order to protect pedestrians in the event that an accident occurs. The latter improvement has resulted in a sportier look, which has also brought about a sportier attitude in the marketing of the new Mini Cooper S. It has been said, jokingly, that the car has the genes of a go-kart. Some of the most significant improvements can be found in the car’s interiors, as the new Mini feels extremely well equipped compared to its older siblings. Located right in the middle is a large, round display with the navigation and infotainment system, as well as surrounding LEDs that can change hues. The speedometer and revolution counter, which used to occupy this location, have been moved to a more traditional position behind the steering wheel.

“Some of the most significant improvements can be found in the car’s interiors.” Beneath the large, round display in the middle we find a number of toggle switches, including the start button. Behind the clutch are the controls for the infotainment system, which consists of a round puck that BMW owners will probably recognize – in fact, the system is the same as the one used in BMW’s own models. This means that you can connect to Facebook, listen to internet radio or surf the web, all from the comfort of your car! A fun detail is that the ECO driving system allows you to collect points by driving in an eco-friendly manner. The Mini has a very go-kart-esque behaviour on the road, and the car’s low centre of gravity is a recipe for quality driving experiences. The vigorous engine with 192 horsepower brings the Mini from 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, if you go with the 6-gear automatic, and the top speed is 233 km/h. However, this car is best experienced at lower speeds. The more twists and turns, the more fun the driving gets; and with such a small car, you don’t need four-wheel drive to have a great time. Furthermore, there are countless customization options such as colours and accessories to make your Mini reflect your own personality – your imagination is the limit. In fact, it seems that imagination is exactly what helped Mini solve the puzzle of how to reinvent an icon. The new “new” Mini Cooper S has the innovative new features that were needed to make the model feel fresh once again.

watches
In a market dominated by prestigious Swiss brands, it is far from easy to compete as a locally manufactured brand. Swedish wristwatch manufacturer Sjöö Sandström is one of the few that have succeeded. Z talked to Felix Formark, CEO of Sjöö Sandström, to learn more. By Max Doherty
The story of Sjöö Sandström begins in Stockholm in 1986, when watch-obsessed engineers Christer Sjöö and Mikael Sandström decided to combine their two passions and design their very own wristwatch. Felix Formark told us more: – Sjöö Sandström is one of Sweden’s two exclusive manufacturers of wristwatches. Christer Sjöö and Mikael Sandström founded the company in 1986, and they were able to launch the first Sjöö Sandström wristwatch in 1993. This wristwatch was the Sjöö Sandström Automatic S1, and it just so happened to be the very first Sweden-made wristwatch. As a testament to the quality and ingenuity of the Automatic S1, the model received the Excellent Swedish Design Award in 1995. Riding on the success of the Automatic S1, the company unveiled the even more ambitious Chronolink Worldtimer UTC in 1997. This model can be regarded as the basis for Sjöö Sandström’s rise to glory, featuring an innovative design with both an analogue movement and a digital module in one case.
164 | z lifestyle magazine
These days, Sjöö Sandström is one of the very few independent wristwatch manufacturers in the world. Their production is smallscale and traditional, with several innovations thrown in for good measure. Each watch is made of hundreds of small parts, each of which is meticulously refined to fit together into a single mechanism. The margins of error are so small that even a deviation of a few hundredths of a millimetre will result in the part being discarded, and the workshops have been pressurized to remove any dust particles. Before these parts are approved for mounting, they are analysed using the latest technology. According to Felix Formark, all parts are “inspected, cleaned, calibrated, tested, analysed, re-inspected and recalibrated” before they are mounted in a new watchcase. Finally, the dial and hand are fitted behind scratch-resistant sapphire glass. A new beginning
About two years ago, Sjöö Sandström started working on a strategic plan to add another layer of exclusivity to the brand. One
watches of the first decisions made was to move into new offices, with a new workshop. Says Felix Formark: – We have moved from our old location in Stockholm’s Old Town to the district of Södermalm. Last year, we came to a crossroads where we had to relocate in order to grow further. As a result, we now have twice as much space to work with, and we still assemble our watches on location. According to Felix Formark, 2014 is Sjöö Sandström’s best year in the company’s history. Formark joined Sjöö Sandström as CEO in October 2012, and since then the company has updated most of its organization. They have a new website, a new collection and new offices, which Sjöö Sandström designed. Felix Formark explained how Sjöö Sandström’s design philosophy has influenced their growing collection of wristwatches: – As a Swedish manufacturer, we seek inspiration from our surroundings and our environment, resulting in timeless, austerely designed timepieces. For example, our Royal Steel Classic is adorned with three rings, which represent Stockholm, Sweden and the world. Over the years, we have expanded our collection.
We have a diver’s watch named Landsort, which can be taken to the deepest point of the Baltic Sea, located not far from the island after which the watch is named. This entails a depth of 459 metres. In addition, we have the UTC Skydiver, which we designed in collaboration with the Swedish Air Force. Sjöö Sandström’s biggest market right now is Sweden, with nearly 30 retailers carrying the brand. In addition, Michelsen Watchmakers sell Sjöö Sandström’s watches in Iceland, while Norwegians can find the brand at Vinderen Ur; there are also re-sellers in Dubai, China and the US. – Although all our customers are unique, we have been able to discern a couple of trends. Some customers seek something unique – so many people wear Swiss brands – while retaining that luxurious feel. Other customers already have several watches, and seek something new. All our customers are incredibly well aware of the market and have high integrity, Felix Formark explains.

“As a Swedish manufacturer, we seek inspiration from our surroundings and our environment.” new line of watches, which will mark the biggest launch in the company’s history. Felix Formark told us more: – This launch will expand our collection in a way that corresponds to our customers’ wishes. Our customers have asked for a more exclusive, premium line of watches and we are finally able to offer them just that. The new models sport a watchcase in rose gold or steel and a movement by Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier, which also produces movements for Richard Mille, Parmigiani and Hermès. The movement has a micro-rotor, which allows for a thinner case of just 8 millimetres. With a water-resistance of 10 ATM, the model adheres to Sjöö Sandström’s basic values of quality, design, user-friendliness and resilience. The cases are manufactured by a company close to Vaucher that specializes in working with precious metals. – So far, we have worked with a single supplier, and after four years of searching we have finally found the alternative we were looking for. This new movement is on an entirely different level, and is manufactured in much smaller quantities. The new movement also allows us to make the watch incredibly thin. It’s almost magical, Felix Formark concludes.

Think like a freak Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner (Allen Lane) University of Chicago professor Steven Levitt and journalist Stephen Dubner struck gold in 2005 when they released their incredibly successful bestseller Freakonomics, which was followed by SuperFreakonomics in 2009. Their third collaboration is called Think Like a Freak and is somewhat different from their previous books. Instead of describing and explaining past phenomena, the authors are trying to help readers understand how to make good decisions in the present and future. When we make decisions, we often base them on incomplete, biased data sets; or worse, we let others decide for us. Think Like a Freak could almost be described as a self-help book, albeit more tongue-in-cheek, covering topics such as scam letters and hot dog eating contests.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage Haruki Murakami (Harvill Secker) Japanese author Haruki Murakami is arguably the country’s greatest contemporary writer, with titles like 1Q84 and Norwegian Wood on his résumé. His latest novel, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, is about a high school student named Tsukuru Tazaki. Tsukuru has four friends, all of whom are named after a colour. However, one day, all four of Tsukuru’s friends end their friendship with him, leaving him lost and alone for many years to come. Years later, Tsukuru meets Sara, who helps him build up the courage to revisit his former friends and find out what really caused their friendship to end.
The Film Noir genre has gone from strength to strength in the world of cinema, from the classics Strangers on a Train to recent favourites Sin City and Drive. Characterized by its visual style and dark and gritty plot, there is something about the genre that makes us keep coming back. Taschen’s newly released Film Noir: 100 All-Time Favourites is the first film-by-film photography book on the subject, and a hefty one at that. So if you’re into stunning photography and frequent walks down memory lane, then this might just be the book for you.
Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions Randall Munroe (John Murray) Randall Munroe is the creator of the best science comic strip on the internet, XKCD (my personal favourites include strips No. 385, 627 and 736), and more recently, the weekly What If series. What If has the author answer science-related questions along the lines of “Could you get drunk from drinking a drunk person’s blood?” (No, since you would have to drink five litres of blood just to get the effect of one beer) and “Has humanity produced enough paint to cover the entire land area of the Earth?” (No, not until the year 2100). The book What If: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions contains 336 pages of carefully researched answers to more or less bizarre questions, both previous favourites from the website and brand new questions such as “How fast can you hit a speed bump while driving and live?”

Gone Girl Thriller
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Action Based on Frank Miller’s neo-noir comics and directed by slasher flick extraordinaire Robert Rodriguez, Sin City hit movie theatres around the world with a bang in 2005. Fans loved the film’s unconventional black-and-white visual style and its extensive cast that included Jessica Alba, Benicio Del Toro, Bruce Willis, Brittany Murphy, Clive Owen and Mickey Rourke. Nine years later, many of these actors have returned for the highly anticipated the sequel, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, alongside new additions such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin and Lady Gaga. As with the previous film, viewers should expect a dark story, excellent action scenes and lots of unnecessary, albeit incredibly stylish, violence.

Gillian Flynn’s third novel Gone Girl was one of last year’s best thrillers, and many are hoping that director David Fincher will have similar successes with Gone Girl on the silver screen. The story follows Nick and Amy: a couple who, after financial troubles, leave New York for a very different life in Missouri. As the title suggest, at some point Amy goes missing, and some people believe that Nick might be responsible. Since a notable part of the book consisted of entries in Amy’s diary, it will be interesting to see how Fincher will translate the narrative to a visual format. However, with a cast featuring Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike and Neil Patrick Harris, chances are he will succeed.
The Equalizer
Serena Drama
Action Here’s a fun exercise: try naming a bad film starring Denzel Washington. It’s pretty difficult, isn’t it? Sure, there are a couple of average ones, but more often than not, the inclusion of Denzel can be treated as a seal of quality. In his latest film, The Equalizer, we see him as a former special ops soldier who faked his own death to live a normal life. However, an event involving the Russian Mafia and a teenage girl, played by Chloë Grace Moretz, drags him back to his former life. The last time Denzel Washington was cast to protect a young girl we got the excellent Man on Fire, and director Antoine Fuqua, known for Training Day and Shooter, intends to repeat that feat.
After their successful collaborations in Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are teaming up for the third time in Serena, directed by Academy Award-winning Danish director Susanne Bier. They actually shot the film back in May 2012, and after several delays, it looks like the film is set to finally premiere this autumn. Based on the 2008 novel by Ron Rash, Serena is a drama that takes place during the Great Depression, in which a couple travels from Boston to the mountains of North Carolina to see to the husband’s timber business. However, once they arrive, the husband’s past catches up with him.

“Without music, life would be a mistake.” Friedrich Nietzsche
La Roux Trouble in Paradise
Broods Evergreen New Zealand is getting increasingly hotter in the music industry, not least after pop sensation Lorde’s debut album last year. Fellow New Zealanders and siblings Georgia and Caleb Nott, who together make up the group Broods, have sought the help of producer Joel Little, who produced Lorde’s debut album “Pure Heroine”, to achieve similar results with their debut album Evergreen. Their sound might not be as mainstream as that of Lorde, and the singles “Bridges”, “Never Gonna Change” and “Mother and Father” are definitely more experimental in style. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t be surprised if Broods become a frequent addition to your local radio station’s playlist.
Basement Jaxx Junto London-based dance music duo Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe, better known as Basement Jaxx, are set to release their seventh studio album this autumn. This is the first album to be released by the duo since 2009, and their fans are obviously happy that the long wait is over. The first single from the album, Unicorn, is old-school acid house at its best, while the second single Never Say Never contains a healthy dose of harmonic, laidback tunes. Overall, the sound is more mature, albeit dance-friendly, which should please all nostalgic house fans out there.
British artist Elly Jackson, currently the sole member of the synthpop act La Roux, is back with a new album after several years on hiatus. La Roux’s debut album in 2009 was well-received by critics and fans alike, a success that peaked with the single “Bulletproof” reaching the number one spot of the UK Singles Chart and La Roux winning a Grammy Award for Best Dance Album. However, the fame also brought about stress and anxiety for the singer, who had to take a break from the music scene. Still, she never stopped writing. The new album has been in the works for some time now, and the singles “Let Me Down Gently” and “Uptight Downtown” features that La Roux sound fans have come to love.
Banks Goddess American singer-songwriter Banks started out on websites like Soundcloud, and just four months after she posted her first song she had been called “a magnetic writer with songs to obsess over” by Billboard Magazine. Despite her newfound fame, Banks is known to be very downto-earth. In fact, she still has her phone number listed on her Facebook page, although she has admitted that it’s getting difficult to answer all the calls. Goddess is Banks’ highly anticipated debut album, which has been headlined by the singles “Brain” and “Goddess”. Her music style is alternative, almost disorienting, with clever lyrics on top of a mishmash of genres. In an interview with Vice Magazine, the singer explained that she named the album “Goddess” because she wants women to feel strong, empowered and beautiful, and never forget that they are all goddesses.

Valiant Hearts Puzzle (Ubisoft) French videogame publisher Ubisoft held their E3 2014 press conference at the classic Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, and showed off a number of highly anticipated shooters, adventure games and their ever-present Just Dance. However, a modest hand-drawn game set during World War 1 drew just as much attention as the big blockbusters. Valiant Hearts is a charming side-scrolling puzzle game that follows several individuals on both sides of the conflict between France and Germany, including a dog, and moves into tear-inducing territory more than once. Destiny is probably the biggest game to be released this year. The game is developed by Bungie, the creators of the successful Halo franchise, and is an MMO-styled shooter set on a futuristic planet Earth and its surrounding planets. Played from a first-person perspective, you roam a huge world and carry out missions in groups of up to three players, meaning you can play through the game with two of your friends. At this year’s E3 in Los Angeles, Destiny generated not one, but two massive lines of people, in two separate halls, who waited for almost an hour to play the game. What’s more, the recent beta version attracted as many as 4.6 million players worldwide. Available on 9 September on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. 50 euros.
Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare Action (Electronic Arts)
Driveclub Racing (SCEE)
Originally released as a tower defence game on mobile phones, the Plants vs. Zombies franchise has taken on a life of its own, with plushies and a full-blown console game. Plants vs Zombies – Garden Warfare was actually unveiled at last year’s E3 for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, but is now coming to all the other platforms as well. As the title suggest, you play either as plants or as zombies, and you can play with or against your friends online. Expect a large dose of plant-related humour and an even larger dose of fun gameplay. Available on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. 40 euros.
Driveclub is arguably the best-looking racing game ever made, and is headed for the PS4 this autumn. The developers Evolution Studios have previously made the popular Motorstorm series, but this time around, they have aimed for a more realistic driving experience. In addition, the developers have sought to build the game almost entirely around online experiences. As a testament to Driveclub’s focus on online races, the test stations at this year’s E3 let visitor race against each other, which drew large crowds of people. Available on 8 October on PS4. 50 euros.
