With GG, a real estate company had, for the first time, produced a high-end lifestyle magazine featuring an extensive range of subjects. In GG, we present the most attractive pieces of real estate worldwide and the most interesting people, who are aficiona-

dos of such properties. They fill them with life, preserve their structures and develop them further. They turn a piece of real estate into a home by adapting it to their ideas and needs. In the beginning, I â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as the publisher of our magazine â&#x20AC;&#x201C; would have never dared to dream that GG would become as successful as it is today. It is currently published in six languages, with a total circulation of 160,000. This fills me with enormous pride, especially because it also shows that high-end print magazines can survive and thrive, even in difficult times. For us, this anniversary edition is reason enough to revisit some of the most exciting stories featured in the last few years, in order to provide our readers with some insights into the extraordinary history of our magazine. Not least thanks to GG, our network of offices has expanded from a single country at the time of the first edition in 1988 to currently 35 countries around the world. GG has kept pace with our expansion and is a testament to this success. With this magazine, we do not simply want to capture dreams and opportunities for beautiful and exclusive living, but also to continue presenting the most outstanding pieces of real estate from around the world to you. Therefore, you will once again find first-class properties, for sale throughout the global network of E&V offices, in this anniversary edition.

– a dream job … it all began seven years ago, over lunch at Christian Völkers’ beautiful finca in Majorca. he told me about his plans for expanding his real estate company engel & Voelkers globally. how his magazine GG could and needed to be turned into an international lifestyle magazine. When i got up from that table i had a new job! today, i look back onto seven super exciting years taking GG onto another level. the intense and sometimes challenging beginnings. a mockup was put together and agreed on. Long telephone calls going deep into the nights with our creative director Janine Weitenauer followed, in which every detail was fine tuned. our team was expanded and restructured. a wonderful collaboration started with photographer Mark seelen, who in his unique way captures personalities and their interiors like no other. With integrity, trust and humor, we have been able to convince some of the most interesting people from around the world to be profiled by us. We traveled to hong Kong to meet with sir David tang, visited Christian Liaigre at his home in paris, had tea with pierre Cardin, and chatted with henry Kissinger in new York about his former soccer club in Germany… it’s been pretty amazing so far. We cannot wait to discover what’s next!

While looking for a new marketing tool 25 years ago, real estate entrepreneur Christian Völkers managed to pull off a real coup. Together with his then 15-strong team (today Engel & Voelkers employs 4,200 staff around the world), he created a highend, exclusive real estate magazine: GG. While the ﬁrst edition was still distributed by Völkers personally, today GG is published in 35 countries and in six languages.

The buildings by the american architect Richard Meier are white and dominated by strict geometric forms. They are also famous for their lightflooded interiors. The design for this villa in Gardone Riviera is no exception: Many of the high windows are extended around corners and contours, allowing the sun to fall in from different directions – and making the landscape omnipresent.

No less than three designs have been contributed to the ‘Villa Eden’ resort by Marc Mark from the Innsbruck-based firm ATP Sphere. His villa creations, here the “Villa Sphere West”, are vast and stylistically the most cosmopolitan. Typical trademarks are the open fireplace in the living room, and the giant terraces. He certainly hasn’t neglected the outlook over the lake either.

The â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Villa Sphere Southâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; by the Innsbruck-based firm ATP Sphere is set over three levels (plus an underground garage) and is utterly striking between the olive trees and cypresses on the hill. Jutting out over the structure, the upper floor also forms the roof for part of the terrace, providing protection from the heat or the rain. Never futuristic, Marc Markâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s designs are uncompromisingly modern.

The British star architect David Chipperfield was inspired for his designs by a certain type of building found locally on Lake Garda: the so-called ‘Limonaia’, glasshouses for growing lemons, with their lofty supports. He revived this idea in the slim columns of the pergolas, with slatted roofs providing shade on the terraces and adding aesthetic interest to the structure of the façades.

Tiffany & Co.’s flagship store has been a dazzling fixture on Fifth Avenue since 1940. Every day thousands of visitors flock through the entrances to the building, where Audrey Hepburn once famously pressed her nose against the shop windows in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But very few people know about the giant jewelry box located above the main store: a salon on the mezzanine floor where the most precious and exquisite of Tiffany’s treasures sparkle. It is the preserve of special clients whose every wish will be fulfilled. Jeffrey Bennett, the manager, tells the story of the Tiffany Salon.

He gets a tray, reaches into one of the display cases and proudly holds up the ten-million-dollar Tiffany Blue Ring... The manager is standing in the middle of the 270-square meter Tiffany Salon above the famous New York flagship store. The interior, personally designed by architect Robert A. M. Stern, looks rather like an elegantly furnished Park Avenue apartment with its comfortable seating, large and small display cases with jewels, and a wall with shelves full of illustrated books on photography, architecture and art, as well as paintings. And of course, there is a fully equipped, fully serviced bar. “With champagne, to help our clients deliberate,” says Jeffrey Bennett, laughing. h, I had better get a tray!

We have many clients with whom we have long-standing relationships going back decades, and who prefer shopping in private. This is why we created this special space for them. In the last two years we have only invited a few hundred people up here. For many of them – members of royal families, politicians and celebrities – this is a huge benefit, for security reasons alone. let’s rock! Engel & Völkers Commercial hosted a private concert by Roger Hodgson of British band Supertramp at the “Reithalle” in Munich. 1

here are not many singers whose

recognize them immediately. But Roger Hodgson, the singer/songwriter behind many popular hits by legendary band Supertramp, is one of this special kind of musician. With songs like “Dreamer,” “Breakfast in America” and “Give a little bit” the international rock star wowed a crowd of around 1,000 guests, clients and VIPs who had accepted the invitation to attend the Engel & Völkers Commercial event at the “Expo Real 2012” commercial real estate fair in Munich, Germany. People danced to the catchy beat and sang along to their favorite songs in high spirits – in front of the stage, on the stage and probably on their way home, too. The concert lasted for over two hours and included many encores, but for most people, it was probably still over far too soon. The event at the “Reithalle” was also the happy occasion of a reunion between Christian Völkers, CEO of E&V, and Roger Hodgson, who enjoy a close friendship. This was one of a number of concerts that the real estate executive and the English musician have put on in Germany and Majorca over the past few years.

The Dancing Towers of Doha

in which they pull apart, moving in different directions while keeping a hold of each other’s hands: that is the image created by the Shoumoukh Towers. Scheduled for completion in June 2013, the two towers are currently under construction on Doha’s Suhaim Bin Hamad Street – or C Ring Road – one of the most important streets in Qatar’s capital city. The shorter of the two, an 18-story tower, rises 100 meters into the air, while its 22-story partner is approximately 116 meters in height. Floors six to ten of both buildings are linked, which adds a dynamic twist to the usual “twin towers” concept. “It was my aim not just to construct a modern, elegant, functional and flexible building in the middle of Doha, but also one that has character,” says Mohamed Ismail from the architecture firm EHAF. In addition to offices and shops, the Shoumoukh Towers will house a large number of restaurants. The frontages of the building have been fully adapted to the region’s climatic conditions. A layer of slats, fixed in front of the building’s glass façades, will shield the office towers from direct sunlight, thereby reducing the build-up of heat. This second frontage also provides the towers with visual momentum. UA
